Visitors, locals, tourists and hikers can experience the trails on Lions Head before the trail maintenance takes place from 7 January 2019 to 5 February 2019 as informed by South African National Parks (SANParks). During the maintenance period Signal Hill will remain open to the public as a viewing point.

Successful completion of this much needed intervention on the popular spiral trail up to the summit of Lions Head requires full closure of the trail during the maintenance period. During 2017, a Trail Audit Report for the Lions Head and Signal Hill footpath network was completed. The outcome of the report resulted in recommendations to improve the longevity of the trail, safety of hikers in the area and the environmental protection of Lions Head and Signal Hill.

Since the inception of the report, the Table Mountain National Parks (TMNP) management has formulated a phased approach to implement the recommended actions. Minor work that would pose the least interrupted usage of the trail has been completed and includes closure of unauthorised pathways and desire lines, directional signage erected to guide hikers along the official trails and completion of the assessment for certification of the climbing infrastructure along the trail.

TMNP will now embark on one of the more intensive phases of the project where the condition of the trail will be addressed.

Kindly note that no access will be permitted to hikers or runners via the track entrance along Signal Hill Drive. This includes the restriction on access after sunset and before sunrise. Due to the maintenance in progress SANParks cannot guarantee the safe passage of visitors along the path way and hence the entire trail will be closed.

Cape Town Now An International Trail Running Mecca Now in its fifth year, Ultra-trail Cape Town (UTCT) has established itself as a bucket list race for ultra distance trail runners, not only locally, but now internationally. The event has grown from one with 200 runners in 2014, to 1750 runners across all four of its races in 2018.

With its inclusion in the Ultra-trail World Tour since last year, the event is now attracting some of the top international elite runners and their supporters. Over 300 international entries are confirmed for December, and over 300 further entries are from other parts of South Africa - which is good news for tourism.

The UTCT routes combine a range of beautiful Mother City sights with the rugged technical terrain of Table Mountain. Sports Tourism is certainly gaining momentum in Cape Town, whether it be from visitors attending big events like Two Oceans Marathon, Cape Town Cycle Tour or Ultra-trail Cape Town, or to pursue adventure sports such as surfing, kitesurfing, mountain biking and hiking.

Specialist tourism operators are emerging that focus on the sports traveller, and Lance Wynn, owner of Cape Town based Runcation, is one such operator who has witnessed the growth of UTCT and other trail running activities in Cape Town. The local trail running community has grown hugely in recent years, and with communication driven by social media channels, weekly runs are arranged by groups such as “Tuesday Trails”, and these groups are being noticed by runners planning their travels to Cape Town.

The slight lowering of water restrictions and the associated tariff is possible due to the record-breaking conservation efforts by residents and businesses in Cape Town, the good rainfall over the past months which has helped the dams supplying Cape Town to recover significantly, and the continued roll-out of cutting-edge pressure management interventions by the City.

The latter is saving some 70 million litres of water per day and is helping to keep Cape Town’s water usage within an acceptable range for the lowering of restrictions and associated tariffs.

Positive passenger growth for Cape Town in Q3 of 2018

Cape Town is showing its resilience as a preferred direct air destination, with international growth figures in the double-digits for the third quarter of the year.

International terminal passengers at Cape Town International Airport grew by 13% for Quarter 3 (July-September) compared to the same period last year. This demonstrates a marked increase - with Quarter 1 (January – March) reflecting 9% international passenger growth, and Quarter 2 (April – June) recording only 3% growth.

The increase is a direct result of the extra airline capacity created through the Cape Town Air Access partnership, which has already seen 10 international route expansions and two new direct international connections added to the Cape Town network in 2018.

Student Project Could End Traffic Woes In Stellenbosch Traffic congestion on the R44, the main transport artery flowing through Stellenbosch, might soon be a thing of the past thanks to collaboration between two of the town’s anchor institutions, the University and the Municipality.

A master’s degree student at Stellenbosch University (SU), Mr Wilko Mohr, is developing a sophisticated and tailor-made real-time computerised control system with cameras to synchronise traffic signals along this busy corridor. And he is doing so on a postgraduate bursary funded by Stellenbosch Municipality.

The project will initially cover eight intersections on the busiest stretch of the R44, from Helshoogte Road at Cloetesville in the north to the Van Reede Street crossing at Rhenish Primary School in the south. The pilot phase might be extended to cover another two intersections and two signalised pedestrian crossings. The aim is to test the system in the first quarter of 2019, before eventually rolling it out across town.

“Traffic congestion has become a major problem for us. We are working on various solutions and are fortunate to have the University on our doorstep. In essence, we would like to provide a ‘living laboratory’, where researchers can come up with solutions to the challenges of our town and surrounds,” Stellenbosch Municipality’s Director: Infrastructure Services, Mr Deon Louw, said at a Rector-Mayor Forum meeting on 12 October 2018.

The definitive list of the best restaurants in South Africa was announced at the 2018 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards on Sunday, 18 November at GrandWest. The country’s top restaurants and the shining stars of South Africa’s restaurant industry were celebrated in a lavish extravaganza of gourmet food, drinks and entertainment for over 700 guests. The countdown from 20 to 11 listed the names to watch, before the much-anticipated Top 10 restaurants were revealed.

The winning restaurants were determined by the scores of a panel of anonymous judges, convened by Margot Janse, who dined around the country unannounced.

City Relocates Last Remains

Exceptional Test Facility

Opened At International Conference A large fan and cooling system test facility, the only one of its kind in the world, was officially opened at the Faculty of Engineering, Stellenbosch University. This exceptional facility is part of the University’s participation in the European-funded Horizon2020 MinWaterCSP Project. Its opening coincided with a two-day international conference on the reduction of water consumption in concentrating solar power plants, hosted in conjunction with Stellenbosch University.

The purpose of the conference was to introduce the South African industry and the wider international community to the project and the possible advantages that its results hold for the Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) industry.

The Horizon2020 MinwaterCSP Project could contribute to technologies that would significantly decrease water and energy consumption in power plants, while maintaining or possibly even improving net-power output to the client, especially in drought-stricken regions where CSP plants are customary.

Following a well-planned seven-hour operation, the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department, together with the contractor, removed the last remains of the Commodore II shipwreck from the Diep River in Milnerton. The wreck weighed approximately 21 tons and is estimated to be about 14 metres in length and 6,8 metres in width. The wreck was successfully relocated during a seven–hour operation.

Topics covered by the conference ranged from water management at solar power stations, the reduction of water consumption used for cleaning at solar power plants and innovative, low water consumption cooling technologies for solar plants.

A 130-ton mobile crane with a spreader beam and slings lifted the wreck, which weighed approximately 21 tons and is estimated to be about 14 metres in length and 6,8 metres in width. The wreck remained intact throughout the operation and it was transported on a low-bed truck to its resting place, a grass embankment owned by the City, near the Lagoon Beach Hotel.

Since the Commodore II shipwreck was uncovered during a winter storm in 2008, there were various attempts to relocate the old lady’s remains as it could pose a danger to boats in the river and it was considered as important historical evidence.

The recent relocation of the Commodore shipwreck was therefore included in the scope of work and budget for the rehabilitation and restoration of the historical Milnerton Wooden Bridge because of its close proximity to the bridge. The bridge dates back to 1901 and was built by the Royal Engineers to provide entrance to a cannon trench. It was declared a National Monument by the old National Monuments Council on 17 July 1987.

During the months of preparations for the operation, the City’s Environmental Management Department had to obtain a permit from the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) to allow the relocation because the remains are of a wreck that is more than 60 years old and SAHRA considers it to be worthy of conservation. The Commodore II is seen as archaeological material under the National Heritage Resources Act (NHRA).

The Commodore II was built in 1919 in Seattle in the United States. She is believed to have featured in the 1935 American blockbuster film Mutiny on the Bounty, with Clark Gable. Apart from this, she was also used to ferry coal during World War 2. Shortly after, the grandson of President Paul Kruger bought the schooner and sailed to Buenos Aires in Argentina. It is here where her fortunes seemed to take a turn for the worse.

When going up the River Plate, the ship was grounded on a mud bank and the damage to the hull took 40 days to repair. The Commodore II also caught fire but fortunately it was extinguished quickly.

On her return, disaster struck again when the boat was hit by a heavy storm which left the mast, rigging and sails all severely damaged. Emergency repairs led the vessel and crew safely back to Cape Town, where the ship was stripped and the remains left to the mercy of Milnerton’s breakers. The public are able to view the remains of the shipwreck.

Stellenbosch University is well known for its expertise in cooling technologies, as well as solar thermal energy solutions and therefore made a significant contribution to the conference.

Amazon Announces Major New Investment Into Cape Town Cape Town and the Western Cape welcomes Amazon’s announcement of a significant new investment into the establishment of three data centres in Cape Town.

Amazon is one of the world’s largest companies, recording $1 trillion market cap last month.

“We believe this investment will endorse the Cape as Amazon’s hub in Africa, and expands on their existing investment in the Amazon Development Centre for Amazon Web Services, and their establishment of one of Cape Town’s largest call centres. The market-leading data centres that Amazon will be constructing on three sites will dramatically expand the computing capacity in the region, providing a boost to Cape Town’s status as the tech and big data hub of Africa.”

Welcoming the investment, Minister Alan Winde, said: “Cape Town has recently been identified as the tech hub of Africa, and when tech giants like Amazon make the decision to open their data centres here, it shows massive confidence in the Western Cape economy and our skills base. The ICT sector has massive potential for economic growth and this investment by Amazon will contribute significantly towards economic development and will create new jobs in the sphere, really cementing our reputation as a space for innovation and technology.”

Speaking to the power of partnerships GreenCape CEO, Mike Mulcahy, said that officials from GreenCape, the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism, InvestSA from the Department of Trade and Industry and Wesgro have been working hard behind the scenes to assist Amazon to grow their business footprint in South Africa on the back of major new investments, like the one announced.

“Cape Town is also home to four universities and a steady stream of engineers and the required skills to support the expansion of the tech sector. The City welcomes Amazon’s investment as we believe it further strengthens Cape Town’s position as global ideas capital of Africa.”

Henri’s - comfort food with a modern global influence

Henri’s Restaurant in Somerset West is celebrating its fifth birthday under the ownership of Pierre Vosloo, a connoisseur in the Restaurant industry. Since Pierre purchased the business from Henri’s granddaughter Laure Norton in December 2013, the restaurant experienced many changes.

Firstly, Henri’s Restaurant opened for lunch and introduced a light lunch menu. In April 2014 they constructed a wood fired pizza oven to produce authentic thin based Italian pizzas. They did extensive renovations to the rooms upstairs which can be used for private functions, even normal dining. In spring 2014 Henri’s introduced a Sunday lunch menu, which has since become very popular amongst patrons.

In 2015 the menus were changed to provide a larger variety of dishes. Marcel van Onselen, Pierre’s son in law joined the team as the General Manager in March 2015. With his help Henri’s updated the wine list. They acquired a wine preservation system called the “Le Verre de Vin”. This system gave Henri’s Restaurant the opportunity to offer more than 26 wines and sparkling wines across the menu list, by the glass.

Henri’s Restaurant is conveniently situated on Somerset West Main Road in a heritage building which was renovated years ago into a spacious contemporary restaurant. In 2017 the building was repainted to give it a more inviting look. The menu and light lunch menus were also updated. The menu can be described as comfort food with a modern global influence.

In 2018 the restaurant expanded even more - due to popular demand by local and international tourists. The menus offer dishes for all tastes. Henri’s Restaurant also offer all dishes as a take away, with the pizzas becoming a very popular take away item, not to mention that guests can also enjoy a drink on the patio or at the stylish bar.

Walking into Henri’s, you will be greeted by Pierre, Marcel and the rest of the team, who will treat you like guests in their own home. Once you have discovered Henri’s Restaurant you will be back, and back again! Henri’s just grows on you!

A look at Cape Town’s property landscape for 2019 With an eventful 2018 drawing to a close and the new economic year a largely unknown entity, many homeowners are considering what the markets may be doing in 2019.

Mike Greeff, Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate CEO says, “This year has seen the market contend with political instability, rising inflation, recession and recordhigh fuel prices.

Despite all the challenges, the real estate sector has remained more buoyant than many expected. While there has been visible tightening at the higher end of the market, the middle and lower markets have been very resilient and have not been as dramatically affected as the industry expected.”

“The outlook for 2019 seems quite promising with the results of the elections expected to provide clarity to the general populace.

Foreign investor confidence is also gradually on the rise, due to Moody’s rating of the country as stable.”

“While sales may be lagging behind previous year averages, various areas of the market are performing very well.”

The Southern suburbs - “Sales in the Southern suburbs, one of the mainstays of the Cape property market, are reported to be historically lower than the boom of previous years but still stable,” according to Simon Raab, Director of Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate.

“According to Propstats, sales for the area over 2016 to 2017 totalled R3.5 billion from 1001 transactions.”

“Properties took on average just 50 days to sell with the difference between asking and selling price a mere 7%.”

“When compared to 2018, using the exact same time period, proof of the slowing is reflected by the numbers; 925 transactions totalling R3.22 billion with a 7.7% price difference. Time on the market was also up by 5 days.”

“The trend is expected to continue into 2019 due to buyers adopting a wait and see attitude but should ease post elections as the political climate stabilises.”

“Investors are set to see numerous developments in the Southern suburbs being completed around the same time.

The sectional title market specifically has seen an increase of stock becoming available thus leading to buyers having more choice.”

“The bracket between R1 million and R2.5 million has been especially liquid, with our sectional title team concluding a sale on average every four days,” adds Raab.

and Atlantic Seaboard says, “The City Bowl and Atlantic Seaboard of Cape Town is the place to be for young buyers who are looking for a trendy location in the heart of the city. While sectional title units remain popular due to their lock and go convenience, there has been some affordability tightening in the bracket above R3 million.

The housing segment which ranges between R3.5 million and R5 million has remained relatively buoyant, but with buyers hesitating to spend more than R5 million. The luxury market (above R10 million) has seen buying primarily by foreign buyers. Upcoming areas to take note of as possible investment hotspots are developments in Vredehoek, Higgovale and Oranjezicht.”

Southern Peninsula - “All signs point to Noordhoek increasing in popularity due to schools being planned and developed in the area as well as road infrastructure being completed. This in turn should ease traffic congestion in the area,” says Jeremy Barnes, Regional Manager of the South Peninsula division.

“Kommetjie and Scarborough continue to offer the best of both, village living paired with modern infrastructure that facilitates remote working. A new commercial development in the Simon's Town area has led to increased interest in the area and while there are still excellent ‘value for money’ properties available, stock in the area is limited which will possibly lead to prices rising. An exciting development to keep an eye on would be the Harbour Bay development which is nearing completion of its first phase as well as the Harbour Bay Mall which has already been completed. Fish Hoek and its surrounding areas have become very feasible areas for first-time buyers who cannot afford areas closer to the CBD or the Southern suburbs.

Promising hubs - According to FNB’s property barometer, Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay have experienced a promising upswing in property prices having grown by 12% in the second quarter of this year. The suburbs of Observatory, Woodstock, Salt River showed price inflation of 17.6% in the same period. These pockets of excellence are responsible for the renewed health of the Cape Town market, considering the fact that the success rate for bond approvals has risen by 8% since the three months (prior to September 2016 to the three months prior to July 2018). The market has also experienced the unique phenomenon of bonds being declined by one bank only to be approved by another.

The 2018 real estate year, while challenging at times has provided valuable insight into the psychology of the market. If current trends continue, market growth is expected to hover in the 3% - 4% range for the next 12 to 18 months.

This magnificent achievement was concluded with a dissertation in The Mathematical Invention of Innovation in Design.

Today, William is a well-experienced Turner Machinist, Marine Engineer and Tool and Dye-Maker, who owned Burlin Engineering for over a decade. His passion for innovation continues, with his designing of motorcycle canisters and silencers at Lion Engineering, Cape Town.

Lourensford Estate recently introduced their sensational export wine range, The Dome Chardonnay and The Dome Pinot Noir, into the local market.

Stylish Dome wines now in South Africa Lourensford has recently released its stylish The Dome range in South Africa.

Consisting of a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the range was originally developed for overseas clientele but the immediate success of it prompted Lourensford to also introduce it in locally.

“The Dome is one of those fairy tale brands” says Koos Jordaan, GM of Lourensford. “Hannes Nel, Lourensford’s Cellarmaster, worked closely with the client determining the style of wine. When the issue of a brand name came up Hannes suggested the Dome, referring to the highest peak of the Helderberg Mountain Range that overlooks the estate. It just made logical sense considering some of Lourensford’s top vineyards are planted on the higher slopes of the Helderberg. The style, quality, name and packaging just works so well together and it immediately drew positive reaction from trade and customers.”

Nel says: “We are so blessed that our 98ha of vineyards are spread over an area of more than 700 ha, all with different soil types, aspects and microclimates. This of course is a tremendous benefit for a winemaker, since we have a selection of building blocks to blend the wine to exactly what we want.”

Lourensford The Dome Pinot Noir

The Dome Chardonnay is a perfect expression of a classic Chardonnay with ripe pineapple, melon and orange blossom flavours on the nose, supported by hints of lemon cream, grapefruit and dried apricots. Flavours of white peach, cashew nuts and caramel linger on the pallet.

The wine has a brilliant linear acidity and dominant dense core with layered sweetness due to the natural fermentation.

Gecko Grill - Taking Pizza-making to a whole new level!

Eskom is planing load shedding once again – and it might run into the December holiday period. This time, we have to do things a little more clever. If you can wear a watch that will not only tell you the time, but also the weather, or if you’ve had enough sleep, and how many steps you’ve taken, surely there must be a way for us to still have delicious meals without any power.

Everyone has to prepare lunch or dinner during load shedding – or for someone just looking for a great Christmas gift. A couple of innovative engineers in Sasolburg designed a pizza braai which works perfectly for making your own pizzas, but is also, capable of preparing a variety of other meals. The first braai was developed with a “wall mounted” design, hence the name “Gecko,” which one normally would see on a wall.

To make your own pizzas: You make a small fire with approximately 16 charcoal briquettes and spread them out evenly once they’ve turned grey in colour.

Roll out the pizza dough on the flat plate provided with the unit, and build a pizza to your liking. Using the handle provided, you place the plate on the top deck for approximately 8 minutes, before moving it to the lower deck for another 8 minutes. After 16 minutes your pizza is ready to enjoy!

With the small “door” in place the “oven” heats up to around 170°C – 180°C which makes the baking of mushrooms, garlic bread, potatoes dishes, focaccia, and many other dishes possible. Furthermore, the top plate works well for flap jacks or fritters.

The Gecko Grill Pizza is made of 304 stainless steel and 3CR12 duplex steel, preventing it from rusting. It comes with two different height settings and are packed in a handy canvas bag. To make two pizzas simultaneously, you can order an additional Pizza base plate.

Iziko Museums of South Africa opened a new exhibition, H2O Today, at the Iziko South African Museum on the 29th November 2018. The exhibition, organised by the Smithsonian Institution Travelling Exhibition Service (SITES), examines the diversity and challenges of water sources worldwide and promotes conversation, creativity and innovation through art, science and technology.

H2O Today is part of the Smithsonian’s #ThinkWater Initiative to raise awareness of water as a critical resource for life. Using immersive content, interactive activities, and digital media, this international exhibition – supplemented with Iziko curated African content and collections objects – brings a global conversation at a critical time within the Western Cape context, having recently experienced the worst water crisis in living memory.

H2O Today dives into what it means to live on a planet where 71 percent of the surface is covered in water, of which less than three percent is drinkable. The exhibition highlights water’s criticality in daily life worldwide through water power, industry, agriculture and home use. It explores the science of water from the hydrological cycle, weather and climate to its physical power as an architect and sculptor of landscape. The exhibition showcases global examples and striking imagery augmented with audiovisual material that tells the story of Earth as the water planet, water as our home, ways that water shapes culture, rising tides and sea level rise, and innovative solutions to some of the planet’s greatest water challenges.

AUSTRIAN AIRLINES RETURNS TO SOUTH AFRICA AFTER 19 YEARS After an absence of 19 years, Austrian Airlines returns to South Africa with a seasonal direct flight between Vienna and Cape Town. This direct flight will increase opportunities for business, investment, travel and trade according to Dr André Schulz, Lufthansa Group General Manager for Southern Africa.

About 60 Austrian companies have subsidiaries in South Africa and for the leisure market Cape Town is seen as a value-for-money destination.

The first Austrian Airlines flight landed in Cape Town on 30 October 2018.

Austrian Airlines operates two flights per week until March 2019 on the route connecting Vienna with the Mother city. The flights will be operated with a Boeing 777 aircraft with a seating capacity for 306 people. The aircraft carries the South African name “Sibanye” (we are one). Austrian Airlines also offers Premium Economy seats on this route in addition to Business and Economy Class.

Handling Venomous Snakes

The next Chapter for Cody, the horse after Surviving Knysna fires South Africa’s bravest pony blazes a new trail of hope.

Cody, a 10 year old pony, made international news in June 2017 when he found his way home 16 days after the devastating Knysna fires. Cody was part of a herd of five ponies who had been ushered across the N2 national road as a last resort when the fire encroached on their home, Essendale Farm.

Perdekraal East Wind Farm, in the Western Cape, is home to no less than sixteen different species of snakes, four of which are highly venomous. Hence, Environmental Site Officer, Chandré Kok has recently undergone additional training to ensure that she is equipped with the adequate skills to manage the task of safely identifying and removing resident snakes, in line with the industry’s best practices guidelines.

“Cape Cobras and Puff Adders have already been identified on site, however, we know of approximately sixteen different species prevalent in the area of the wind farm and although they vary from being harmless, the endemic Cape Boomslang is highly venomous and not to be trifled with,” said Perderkraal East Wind Farm’s Environmental Site Officer, Chandré Kok. Chandré, who has a B.Sc degree in Geology and Geography and a B.Sc Honours in Environmental Management feels that she was fortunate to be nominated to attend the training provided by the African Snakebite Institute, where the appropriate handling and removal of snakes from a working area was provided.

The ponies had been sent into a nearby plantation, presumed safe based on wind direction and the N2 creating a firebreak – but in a cruel twist of fate, the winds soon changed and the fire leapt across the road, turning the ponies’ intended refuge into a raging inferno. Cody’s family searched for the ponies by any means possible, but found no signs of them, except for sporadic sets of tracks that indicated that some of the ponies had escaped the plantation.

“When Cody was spotted trying to cross back over the N2, 16 days after he had fled his home, onlookers mourned his coming fate. He was emaciated and badly burnt, and had been without food or water for two weeks. His digestive system had shut down, and the injuries to his eyes meant that he could hardly see. Cody appeared to be blind and without hope.” – says Karen Rademeyer, Cody’s owner.

Against what seemed insurmountable odds, Cody made his way home, crossing the busy N2 just 100m from the farm where he had been born.

His story captured the hearts of many South Africans and animal lovers abroad, who raised over R132,218.82 towards Cody’s treatment on donations based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy. No less than 272 donors sent messages of support for courageous Cody.

Despite his scars, he is living a full life as a happy pony - a fine example to us all.

His story of bravery, inspiration and hope has touched the hearts of thousands of people throughout the world, but, his story is far from over... As the animal ambassador for The Eden Empathy Initiative, a brand new chapter is about to unfold as Cody and his friends embark on a project aimed at achieving “the impossible”: Helping children and animals in disadvantaged communities, while breaking cycles of violence and abuse.

“I was elated with the prospect of being the dedicated snake handler on the Wind Farm and know how important it is to be able to correctly identify the type of snakes, to ensure that staff are kept safe. So, as the nominated snake handler, I see the training on how to remove a dangerous snake and the knowledge to identify snakes as critical skills,” she added.

Perderkraal East Wind Farm, in alignment with the wind energy industry’s environmental guidelines works to achieve responsible development. Befittingly, the handling of snakes on site is managed by a catch and release system. There is a snake handling kit available on site, and once caught the snake is contained in a snake tube and thereafter released approximately 5km away, from where it was caught, in a safe environment.

Chandré works closely with the site’s Health and Safety Management to ensure that employees are kept aware and understand the protocols that have been implemented.

Initial Awareness Training is provided to all employees working on the site, which includes educating all relevant personnel on the characteristics of the various types of snakes that are prevalent in the area.

The Eden Empathy Initiative, a newly formed non-profit company, combines an exciting new mix of animal-related education, skills training, activities and therapy.

Their focus is on pre-teen children living in disadvantaged communities. The team will be working with young children, teaching them about wild and domestic animals in novel ways. They will also be helping them develop authentic leadership skills, while removing the emotional “blocks” to feeling empathy, through proven, animal-assisted clinical therapy.

“If a snake has been spotted in a particular work area, the HSE Manager is immediately informed, she then notifies me so that I can take responsibility to identify and handle the snake,” commented Chandré.

Rademeyer says the Initiative is likely to make a significant impact – not only in terms of helping the children and animals directly involved in the programme, but also by creating an awareness of why such a dire lack of empathy exists in South Africa, how this affects all South Africans, and how we can work together to create kinder, more caring communities.

Perdekraal East Wind Farm will eliminate approximately 410 000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year compared to traditional fossil fuel power plants. In addition to zero carbon emissions and reduced use of fossil fuels, the country will benefit from minimal water consumption during the generation process and significant social and enterprise development programmes.

Once complete, the 110MW Perdekraal Wind Farm, which spans 3 055 hectares, will comprise forty-eight, 115m-high wind turbines. When operating at full capacity, it will generate around 368.8 GWh of clean renewable energy per year and is expected to supply electricity to power up to 95 000 South African homes.

Trans Agulhas - The Toughest Inflatable Boat Race In The World The World’s Toughest Inflatable Boat Challenge starts every year on 28 December at Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. It is a fast-paced, action-packed water sports event with over 30 inflatable boats battling it out in the waves.

This 31st prestigious event takes place over 5 days and competitors will visit beaches along the coast between Nature’s Valley and Gordon’s Bay where the race will finish on 1 January 2019. Boost Performance Racing is once again organizing this epic challenge that remains the most highly anticipated event on the racing calendar.

This is the one that separates the men from the boys, testing both man and machine. As the flag drops on day 1 and throttles are opened, these teams push their engines and their bodies to the maximum for the coveted title of “Trans Agulhas Champions”. While this sport might look like plain sailing, there are many obstacles to navigate over the 5 days on the water.

Teams will be looking to avoid capsizing in the waves, connecting with submerged rocks and then of course there are the shark infested waters near Struisbaai. Even though the teams have been preparing throughout the season, all the planning and strategizing cannot control Mother Nature on the day. Spectators are in for a super charged show at each beach as the teams compete in the surf for the title of “King of the Waves”.

The masters of survival, Trans Agulhas legends Wimpie Ackerman and Whitey Louw as well as Australian David Barnet and his co-pilot Tjaart Oosthuizen will be back on the water this year to show the youngsters why they are the Kings of the Agulhas. These teams are some of the most experienced and knowledgeable teams taking part in this challenge and will certainly keep the crowds entertained.

Experience A Dazzling Array Of Light, Sound & Artwork @ Spier Spier presents its first Light Art Show from 8 December 2018 - 30 January 2019.

Each night during this period, visitors will be able to experience a dazzling array of light and sound artworks throughout the historic Stellenbosch farm.

Join the opening ceremony on Saturday, 8 December or Sunday, 9 December.

Choreographed by Jay Pather, sound and light sculptures will be revealed as the audience follows the procession of performers across a multi-sensory, cross-cultural wonderland.

New Venture For Blind Adventurer And One of The Best Music Duo's World-renowned blind adventurer and motivational speaker Hein Wagner, will team up with multi award winning CH2 to inspire people around the world with their mind blowing experiential session, A Blind Man with Music and Vision.

Combining the remarkable successes, achievements and world records of a blind keynote motivational speaker with the internationally acclaimed, multi-award winning guitar music of CH2, they will take participants on a journey of inner exploration, turning dreams into action.

Says Corneille Hutten, of CH2: “We were booked for the same event, and after hearing Hein’s incredible story and enjoying his motivational session, I approached him with a very unique idea. There is so much synergy between Hein’s powerful message and the virtuoso, exotic style of CH2, it just made instant sense. Music has the power to harmonise people’s minds and open their hearts, which makes them more susceptible to the power of Hein’s message.”

Hutten continues that Wagner relies on hearing as his primary sense to get along in the world. “This, combined with music, which is audible, makes our offering a language and message of the ear and the heart. Wagner adds that CH2 has been conquering the world with their music from the Southernmost tip of Africa to the US and Japan. Wagner has been pushing boundaries all his life.

Wagner has become such an inspiration to so many, helping them realise with gratitude how many positives they still have in their lives. He inspires people to excel at whatever they put their minds to and to focus on opportunities, rather than falling into the trap of wallowing in misfortunes.

Both Wagner and CH2 have achieved success through dedication, belief, hard work, perseverance and never taking their eyes off their goals.
