It truly is the season to be jolly. Summer has brought with it, new hope, new energy and most- excitedly, new life! Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn has welcomed fluffy cheetah cubs, a flawless baby brown-lemur, Egyptian geese and a baby Flying Fox to their family! Five perfect cheetah cubs, two girls and three boys were born at the Jill Bryden Cheetah Reserve to cheetahmom Pippa and cheetah-dad, Parker in October last year. Craig Gouws, Assistant Zoological Manager, and proud Big Cat Zookeeper glowed when asked how he felt about the new litter.

Cape Town was named the ‘World’s Leading Festival and Events Destination’ at the 2018 World Travel Awards that took place at the Pátio da Galé, in Lisbon, Portugal recently. This accolade was off the back of being voted ‘Africa’s Leading Festival and Events Destination’ in October. This is yet another milestone for Cape Town and this accolade is reaping the reward for the City’s Events Strategy that enables event packaging and promotion for the tourism industry. The award shows that this administration is constantly enhancing its strategy to be in line with international trends and positioning Cape Town as a global city.

A New Year Brings New Hope New Energy And New Life! (Continue from page 1) “They are all doing so well! I saw their mom born to the Cango family, so it’s a huge privilege seeing her babies healthy, happy and settling in well. They all have big personalities and are uncannily suited to their unique names.” With less than 7100 cheetahs left in the wild, an international self-sustaining cheetah population in professional and ethical human care is becoming even more important with the continued decrease of animal numbers in the wild. Since 1986, Cango Wildlife Ranch has been pioneers in successful cheetah breeding, and as a facility they focus on breeding to increase the in-situ populace. “In layman’s terms, this means we hope to help facilitate the birth of healthy, happy and genetically diverse cheetahs who could one day, should they go extinct in the wild, offer a cheetah-species to rectify and assist the collapsed genetic pool.”

Name-finding is a very special time for the staff of Cango Wildlife Ranch, and everyone contributes excitedly to the pool. The animal care team has the final verdict, as they can easily identify and attribute personality traits to the little ones and therefore have the best discretion when it comes to naming them appropriately. The girl cubs are named Thandi, which means ‘loving one’ and Topaz, which means Jewel.

EXPERIENCE ICONIC LIONS HEAD DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON BEFORE TRAIL MAINTENANCE
“With strong names like these, we are excited to see the ripple effect their presence will have on inspiring every visitor we welcome at Cango Wildlife Ranch. They have an immense purpose in the grand scale of teaching the world about the plight of the cheetah, who without everyone's help, will not survive ‘the-era-of-mankind” says Mari-Lize Warrington, Marketing Manager.

“The first section of our guided tour leads visitors into our Valley of Ancients, where visitors come close to our Large-Flying Foxes, or large bats. They love ‘hanging around’ and if you look closely enough, you’ll be able to spot a baby holding onto his mom for safe-keeping.”

Visitors, locals, tourists and hikers can experience the trails on Lions Head before the trail maintenance takes place from 7 January 2019 to 5 February 2019 as informed by South African National Parks (SANParks). During the maintenance period Signal Hill will remain open to the public as a viewing point.
RETIREMENT Page 9
Successful completion of this much needed intervention on the popular spiral trail up to the summit of Lions Head requires full closure of the trail during the maintenance period. During 2017, a Trail Audit Report for the Lions Head and Signal Hill footpath network was completed. The outcome of the report resulted in recommendations to improve the longevity of the trail, safety of hikers in the area and the environmental protection of Lions Head and Signal Hill.
“A short walk down to Cheetahland would take you to our perfect Brown lemur-bundle, who was born to mom Daisy and dad Clyde and is doing exceptionally well. We can’t yet say if he is an official ‘he’ or ‘she’, due to him still clinging very closely to mom Daisy. Only once he (or she) starts moving about on his own, will we be able to determine safely.”
Since the inception of the report, the Table Mountain National Parks (TMNP) management has formulated a phased approach to implement the recommended actions. Minor work that would pose the least interrupted usage of the trail has been completed and includes closure of unauthorised pathways and desire lines, directional signage erected to guide hikers along the official trails and completion of the assessment for certification of the climbing infrastructure along the trail. TMNP will now embark on one of the more intensive phases of the project where the condition of the trail will be addressed. Kindly note that no access will be permitted to hikers or runners via the track entrance along Signal Hill Drive. This includes the restriction on access after sunset and before sunrise. Due to the maintenance in progress SANParks cannot guarantee the safe passage of visitors along the path way and hence the entire trail will be closed.

One-month older Thor, sole-cub who required intervention at a very young age, is a brave young’un just as his name implies. He is doing very well now and is being introduced to the five siblings in increments with great success.

The Onyx Opens In Cape Town’s Foreshore The Onyx, a sophisticated hotel managed by Newmark Hotels, Residences, Reserves & Lodges, officially opened on 1 December 2018. The hotel forms part of an innovative, mixed-use building in Cape Town’s Foreshore, conveniently located on Heerengracht Street, directly opposite the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The building was transformed under the creative guidance of one of Cape Town’s leading architects, Robert Silke, together with luxury property development company, Signatura. Its exteriors feature captivating curves and white aluminium-clad balconies, contrasted with slick black surfaces which allude to the building’s namesake, onyx – a rare and striking gemstone, similar in appearance to black sapphire. The Onyx’s interiors are equally alluring and meet guests with modern extravagance and sophisticated finishes in a marbled foyer. The hotel alone comprises one hundred and two apartment-style hotel rooms, including Studios, Deluxe Studios, One-Bedroom Apartments, Deluxe One-Bedroom Apartments and Two-Bedroom Apartments. Styled by celebrated interior decorator, Francois du Plessis, each studio and apartment features top-end furnishings, finishes and comforts. A fully-equipped kitchenette, complete with appliances by leading brands, allows for easy in-room dining and high levels of convenience. The building is additionally home to a new and trendy restaurant, MRKT, which also opened in December 2018.
MRKT serves a selection of fresh and wholesome breakfast and lunch items, including harvest-inspired buffet offerings. MRKT further comprises a barista station, bakery and deli section, and is open to the public. In addition, an Asian-style restaurant and sake bar will open in the first quarter of 2019. The fourth floor features a bar, a lounge and relaxation area, top-class gym facilities, an indoor-outdoor swimming pool with views of Cape Town and Table Mountain, and a spa managed by Sanctuary Signature Spas. Comments Neil Markovitz, MD of Newmark Hotels, Residences, Reserves & Lodges: “The Onyx is the product of outstanding team work and expert input from industry leaders; a property that I am immensely proud to have incorporated into Newmark’s Residences portfolio. We trust that The Onyx will continuously exceed guests’ expectations.”
Cape Town Is The World’s Best Destination For Festivals And Events (Continue from page 1) to further stimulate our local economy. City of Cape Town’s officials were part of an inter-governmental delegation that returned from Singapore where they presented Cape Town’s bid to host the 2023 Netball World Cup. The City’s annual calendar is filled with some of the most iconic events and adding the Netball World Cup 2023 to the growing list would be a key milestone that will aid in promoting women in sport. Being able to attract such international events to our shores and provide support to local home-grown events every year is testament to this administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment where these showpieces are able to grow in stature and provide a lasting experience for attendees. The Events Department has been successfully driving this strategy through facilitating, providing guidance and coordinating events hosted in the city to ensure that Cape Town is an events destination of choice and the events hub on the continent. The City continues to work tirelessly to strengthen its position as a premium events destination and in this regard we are looking to further improve by going online with an E-Permit system next year. Photo: FIA World Rallycross Championship
“We want the world to know that Cape Town is the destination to invest in, a place to work, for entertainment and the best place to live. This is not just an award for Cape Town; it is an award for South Africa and Africa. We want Cape Town to position itself as a place where the world can access Africa and Africa can access the world. Continuing to host events of an international standard will make this vision a reality,” said Executive Mayor Dan Plato. In turn, this means constantly looking for opportunities to promote Cape Town and bidding for the next mega or major event
Having developed a strong track record as an events destination, we are aware events provide enormous benefit to the local economy and play a pivotal role in generating visitor expenditure. It is important for the City that this translates into economic inclusion of all communities in Cape Town, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Design Indaba Conference, FIA World Rallycross Championship, Cape Town Cycle Tour, HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series - Cape Town Sevens, Old Mutual Two Oceans Race, Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and the Volvo Ocean Race.

V&A Waterfront Joins Cape Town Air Access Partnership “We look forward to working with the V&A Waterfront in helping secure even more direct routes into Cape Town. This will boost tourism, help attract foreign direct investment and increase exports, ultimately growing the Cape economy and creating jobs” says Wesgro CEO, Tim Harris. Cape Town International Airport has welcomed more than 10.7 million passengers in 2017, becoming the third largest airport in Africa. There has been a significant growth of 20% in international terminal passengers in 2017. Increased air connectivity has also resulted in a noticeable increase in cargo being transported in and out Cape Town International Airport, growing by 52% between 2016 and 2017.

Cape Town Air Access welcomes the V&A Waterfront, one of the most visited tourist attractions in Africa, as a private sector supporter. The Waterfront joins Naspers, Investec, Leeu Collection, Oceana Group and Tsogo Sun as private sector partners on this collaborative project. Established in 2015, Cape Town Air Access brings together the public and private sector to help secure direct routes into Cape Town International Airport. To date, the initiative has helped land 8 new international airlines, 13 new direct routes and 18 route expansions, resulting in more than 1.5 million two-way seats being added into Cape Town International. This has boosted the Cape economy by some R6 billion.
V&A Waterfront CEO, David Green, commented: “The work of Air Access is critical to further boosting international tourism to the city and region at a time when the tourism sector is growing at three times faster than the overall economy, creating not only jobs but also opportunities for other industries and services and that’s why we’ve come on board as a partner. Cape Town continues to prove that it is a world class destination and growing its appeal and access boosts the attractiveness of the province, the country and the region as a whole - a job that needs all stakeholders to support.” Minister of Economic Opportunities, Beverley Schäfer, said: “The success of Air Access lies in the fact that it has always been a partnership between various entities and sectors with a common goal. We are delighted that the V&A Waterfront, one of the biggest tourist attractions in Africa, has come on board as a partner with the common goal of building tourism, which will allow us to create jobs and opportunities in the Western Cape.”
Norval Foundation 1st Museum In Africa Commended By Sotheby's Norval Foundation is the first art foundation in Africa and one of only five globally to be commended by Sotheby’s international auction house for curatorial excellence, championing the work of innovative institutions who strive to break new ground and challenge our understanding of art today. The Sotheby’s commendation has been bestowed upon the exhibition ‘Jackson Hlungwani: Alt and Omega’, opening at Norval Foundation in February 2020, offering the most comprehensive survey of the work of the South African artist curated by Nessa Leibhammer, Portia Malatjie, Owen Martin and Karel Nel. Sotheby’s announced the winner of the 2018 Sotheby’s Prize, which, in its second year since May 2017, offers an annual sum of up to $250,000 to help facilitate exhibitions that explore overlooked or under-represented areas of art history. In addition to the main prize, a sum of $10,000 is also awarded to five institutions whose exhibitions and initiatives are judged by the jury panel to be inspiring and transformative. Between them, the commended list embraces both established and
underrepresented artists, as well as the relatively unexplored aspects of sexuality and race in art, while at the same time supporting inspired new plans for community-based mobile exhibitions. Now in its second year, the Sotheby’s Prize garnered interest from around the globe with a total of 93 applications from institutions in 19 different countries across all major continents. Covering a remarkably diverse range, applications were received for exhibitions exploring different aspects and dialogues around geography, race, gender, and sexuality, among other themes. Presented to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (opening in Los Angeles in late 2019), the $250,000 award will support their exhibition, Regeneration: Black Cinema 1900-1970 which opens in Fall 2020. The first exhibition of its kind, Regeneration will reveal the important and under-recognised history of African American filmmakers in the development of American cinema. It will explore African American representation in motion pictures from its advent to just beyond the Civil Rights era. The commended exhibition at Norval Foundation, Jackson Hlungwani: Alt and Omega, will offer the most comprehensive survey of the work of the South African artist. Jackson Xidonkani Hlungwani (1923-2010) developed a visual language that integrated traditions of Tsonga-Shangaan wood carving, Southern African spirituality, popular culture and biblical narratives.

9 reasons to own a property in Cyprus
Owning an offshore property and realising a Plan B is a dream than many South Africans would love to achieve. The choice of where to invest can be intimidating; and the financial, legal and tax implications coupled with language & cultural barriers sometimes makes even thinking about a Plan B a non-starter.
Europe remains being the preferred geographic location for the majority of South Africans as not only it is the world’s largest trading block, but the opportunities are enticing. There is positive economic growth, decreasing unemployment rates and on-going political stability – all of which has cemented Europe as being a very safe destination for our hard-earned ZAR. HERE ARE THE 9 REASONS WHY SOUTH AFRICANS ARE BUYING PROPERTY IN CYPRUS: 1. Cyprus has been voted one of the safest countries in the world – your personal safety is assured. 2. Cyprus is a full member of the EU, economically stable and politically secure so the country is not flooded with refugees. 3. Being an ex-British colony (Cyprus is not part of Greece), there is no language barrier as everyone speaks English. 4. You can acquire permanent residency or EU 2nd citizenship by buying property. 5. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near to The Med. The lush & beautiful Western side of the country is similar to the Western Cape and enjoys the biggest demand and highest growth. 6. Cyprus is a very popular tourist destination so owning an investment property will reap an attractive offshore income. 7. There is no inheritance tax, so you can implement effective tax planning. 8. The lifestyle on offer in Europe is similar to South Africa: golf courses, breath-taking countryside, modern cities etc. 9. There are no social problems in Cyprus: no car guards, shanty towns or people living below the poverty line; and because of this Cyprus has huge appeal as a destination for relocation, retirement, holiday-making and investment. Savvy investors should ensure they take the time to make the right decision to secure their Plan B especially with some counties offering the chance to secure relatively easy permanent residency status or a 2nd passport. You are advised to closely evaluate each programme to understand the minimum investment amounts, the pre-requisites and of course all of the upfront and on-going costs. Your approach to your investment decision will be determined on how clear you are on the reason you want a Plan B in Europe. Is the driver to acquire residency or a 2nd citizenship, to relocate or to have an investment property to leave a legacy for the children and grand children? Investing overseas is a huge financial and emotional commitment, but your offshore journey can be made easier when you get advice from professionals. Always check exactly what you are buying before signing any contracts; and take your time – there will always be a good deal to be had. Going across on an inspection trip to personally view the property opportunities and to do the groundwork could save you thousands in the long run! Cypriot Realty is a pioneer in actively and consistently promoting property opportunities primarily in Cyprus. They have successful been doing this from their Cape Town and Sandton offices since 2008.
LOGO
As a result, the company is recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative investment specialist for promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for acquiring permanent residency/citizenship, property investment, immigration/ retirement and starting a European-based business.

Table Mountain National Park and Differential Tariffs SANParks announced in November 2017 that Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) would be charging differential tariffs as of 1 November 2018 at all its entry gates. These entry gates include Cape Point, Boulders, Silvermine, Tokai and the Picnic sites. A year’s notice was afforded to allow the public and commercial business the opportunity to prepare for the rates change. All the other 19 National parks have been charging differential tariffs since 2005 and Table Mountain National Park has moved to follow suit. As of 1 November 2018 the park will have three rates for entry at the gates. The Standard rate which is what Foreign Visitors will pay. No documentation is required to be submitted at the gate upon entry on this rate. The SADC rate afforded to those visitors who can prove they are SADC Nationals by producing their original passport on arrival at the gate. This requirement is in place for every adult who enters the park on this rate and not just the driver of the vehicle. And the Local rate which South African Residents will be charged if they can prove they are SA residents at the gate on entry. To claim the SA rate on arrival the accepted documentation is one of the following: SA ID Book, SA ID Card, SA Drivers Licence, SA Passport, proof of Permanent Residency or valid visa (work, spousal, volunteer, retirement, study). Every adult in the vehicle who wishes to claim the South African rate on entry must provide proof they are South African. It is not sufficient that the driver of the vehicle can prove they are South African. Proof of your local address is regrettably not accepted. It needs to be an official document as listed above.

Children under 18 do not need to supply proof of South African identification when entering with an adult South African provided the adult qualifies for the SA rate on the date of entry. Refunds will not be offered for those who pay the standard tariff on entry and then post departure submit proof of South African Identification. The park requests all locals visiting the park to have their SA identification at hand when stopping at the gate kiosk to facilitate the quick processing of all vehicles through the gates. All children over the age of 12 are billed as adults, a policy applied across all National Park gates. For more information visit www.sanparks.org/parks/table_mountain/
Non-stop flights from
Travel Clubs vs Holiday Clubs
Cape Town to Hong Kong
With the holiday season in full swing, the Vacation Ownership Association of Southern Africa (VOASA) is cautioning consumers to be vigilant when approached by Travel Clubs.
The latest route in the airline’s network heralds the first non-stop link between the Western Cape and the heart of Asia. Cathay Pacific has celebrated the launch of its non-stop service between Cape Town and Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific Flight CX794, operated by the Airbus A350-900 aircraft, departed from Cape Town International Airport, marking the commencement of the airline’s second South African route and is the latest in its rapidly expanding network.
“These are not the same as Holiday Clubs,” says Alex Bosch, spokesman for VOASA. “A Travel Club membership offers discounts on trips that are sponsored by vendors within their affiliation so that the vendors can market themselves to consumers. Most memberships come with several lucrative free trip offers each year but there is always a portion of the trip that you will have to pay for, plus membership fees and other related costs.” He goes on to explain that in comparison a Holiday Club membership allows you to purchase a specific number of points, which are then redeemed for a variety of vacation options each year. This is the newer version of timeshare that gives consumers more flexibility instead of returning to the same holiday location year after year. “Furthermore, Travel Clubs are notorious for approaching Holiday Club members with the opportunity to sell on their behalf the use rights of their points to third parties. In return these members are assured of receiving a generous rental income through marketing to overseas holidaymakers and from which the Travel Club awards itself a large percentage. However, these generous rental incomes do not always materialise,” adds Bosch. The Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) latest annual report revealed that a vast majority of timeshare complaints emanated from Travel Clubs, which sadly tarnishes the shared vacation ownership industry because of the confusion between these Clubs and Holiday Clubs.
The new seasonal Cape Town – Hong Kong service, the first direct link between the two prominent business and leisure tourism destinations, boosts South Africa’s accessibility and complements Cathay Pacific’s existing daily non-stop flights between Johannesburg and Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific Regional General Manager for South Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Mark Sutch, said: “The introduction of our new seasonal Cape Town service increases our connectivity to and from Africa and creates exciting new opportunities for both the Western Cape and our home city of Hong Kong.” Sutch added that the new service will also boost travel to other destinations on Cathay Pacific’s network, as it provides excellent connections from South Africa to popular destinations like Bangkok, Denpasar (Bali), Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo, via its Hong Kong hub. Tim Harris, CEO of Wesgro, the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape, added that the new service will meet customer demand for travel to the region – home of the Mother City, the Cape Winelands, and pristine, picturesque beaches. Hong Kong gives more South African travellers the chance to experience one of the world’s most popular business and leisure destinations. Experience Hong Kong’s delicious street food freshly made to order, or head to Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island for a view of the city and harbour. Cathay Pacific has expanded its long-haul network significantly in recent years. In 2018 alone, the airline has launched new services to Brussels, Dublin and Washington DC, while Cathay Dragon, the regional airline of the Cathay Pacific Group, has commenced flights to Davao City in the Philippines, Jinan and Nanning in mainland China and Medan in Indonesia. The new Cape Town – Hong Kong service is running until 17 February 2019 departing from Cape Town on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
“Never pay up front to have someone help you sell your timeshare. If your circumstances have changed and you need to sell, rather approach your Holiday Club to discuss cancellation options or approach a resale company that is registered with VOASA. Alternatively, work with a VOASA listed rental company and recoup some of the money until you sell,” advises Bosch. All VOASA members must comply with the industry Code of Conduct and relevant law and regulations related to their business. Where applicable, this would include holding a current fidelity fund certificate from the Estate Agency Affairs Board. “We advise consumers to do their research with a very critical eye before giving out their credit card information and paying a membership fee. Be sure you know that the company is legitimate by asking for their annual report and better still, ensure that they are an accredited member of VOASA,” concludes Bosch. This can be determined by checking the member’s directory on the association’s website at www.voasa.co.za

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Medical students cycle 902km to ‘help our friends become doctors’ A team of Stellenbosch University (SU) medical students embarked, during the week of 1 - 8 December 2018, on an ambitious 902km cycle tour from Vioolsdrift at the Namibian border to Cape Agulhas, the most Southern tip of Africa, to raise funds to be dedicated to fellow medical students in need of financial assistance. “I was in awe when I realized that he would become a healer within the next few years. This kid could be a local doctor, the next big surgeon, he could be saving lives, he could do ground-breaking research. Regardless of where he goes, he would be contributing to the health of our country for the following 50 years. It was this knowledge that moved me and 4 others students to take on 902 kilometres on bicycles, when we found out that some of our peers were experiencing financial exclusion, that hindered this critical stage of development,” - an epiphany Breda Reed, a medical student had one evening, as he sat across his roommate in residence at the University of Stellenbosch. Students in South Africa have the opportunity to attain a tertiary education by bursaries and funds which are limited to covering accommodation, tuition, text books and food allowances. It is often the case that students cover basic needs like toiletries, data, transport, and even healthcare costs from their food allowances meaning that they might not be able to sustain a healthy, balanced lifestyle outside of their academics, and can’t maintain a healthy diet either. Breda Reed, Mias Marais, Luke Titus, and Christoff Greyling – all students in medicine and Wonderboy Nkosi, a student in dietetics felt responsible to find a solution for the needs of their fellow students. Except for one of the riders none of the other students had any cycling experience, nor had any cycling skills. After the second year medical students finished their last exam they started their journey in the earlier hours of 1 December 2018 from Vioolsdrift covering a distance of 920km to Cape Agulhas, in blazing heat, with less than 3 hours of sleep a night, with no special eating plan. Just Rehidrat, dried fruit, jungle bars, potatoes and coke. We love each other and were unwilling to let our team mates, and even more, our peers, down. In the end I believe what carried us was our cause - keeping all our cylinders firing, against all odds,” Breda explains. On day 7 the team met the Rector of the Stellenbosch University who cycled with them to Franschhoek and continued to Caledon.

partners with Stillwater Sports events in 2019
It was a moment to big to be captured by a camera on the final day as they arrived in Cape Agulhas. “We were tired, burnt, and to be honest, a bit overwhelmed. Yet deep within, we felt invincible. Our team went through tough sacrifices, each with our own battle over the past months. That was our victory moment. Behind 7 smiling faces there were tears, outbursts of jubilations, cries for rest, winces of pain, memories of hardship and triumph, there was deep love and brotherhood.” “Financial exclusion is a reality. One that reminds us of the past, one that keeps the past alive. Cycling brought students from different backgrounds together and offered us a platform for reconciliation. We dream of having 50 or more students, representing all backgrounds and genders, cycling together to break a barrier that influences us all.” “The cycling trip is an incentive that we will offer to current healthcare professionals, and any other citizen of this country that feels moved to unite in this cause, to invest in future healthcare professionals, by donating towards The Hippocampus Fund,” Breda concludes. Newborn benefits from advanced keyhole surgery
A keyhole procedure to repair a diaphragmatic hernia, a congenital defect in the diaphragm, was successfully performed on a newborn baby at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital. Baby Stella healed rapidly after the procedure and now has just “three little marks” to show that she had an operation, says Dede Warren, a mother of three from Durbanville. Dr Ricky Dippenaar, a neonatologist who practises at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital and was responsible for Stella’s care at the facility’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), said well-known Cape Town paediatric surgeon, Professor Daniel Sidler, recently performed the procedure to repair Stella’s left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

“Professor Sidler and his team did a superb job to repair the defect, and we are delighted with the outcome. Stella had a follow-up examination late last week and it was evident that she had quickly recovered from the procedure and is developing strongly,” added Dr Dippenaar. “For fragile newborns such as Stella, minimally invasive keyhole surgery offers numerous advantages over traditional open surgery. Although the procedure is intricate and requires a high degree of skill, it is considerably less traumatic to a baby than the open surgery that would traditionally have been performed. It is also less painful for the baby post-operatively and they tend to recover much more quickly. Dr Dippenaar said that the anomaly in the baby’s diaphragm was detected early in the pregnancy by obstetrician by means of a foetal ultrasound. Mrs Warren was referred to foetal assessment specialist for further investigation, who discovered that baby Stella had a large diaphragmatic hernia. Mrs Warren was then referred on to Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital for further care and treatment. Professor Sidler explains that the defect was placing pressure on the baby’s heart, resulting in a lack of oxygen to, and the underdevelopment of, the left lung. He says that if left untreated, the defect would have become life-threatening. “As we knew about the problem prior to Stella’s birth, the team at the hospital were able to plan ahead, optimise maternal health, provide counselling, and finally perform a controlled delivery via caesarean section. Once Stella had been delivered she was placed on a ventilator and could be prepared for surgery. This was undertaken 48 hours later, once she was stable enough,” adds Dr Dippenaar. Professor Sidler says the keyhole procedure was tricky, as he had to work within a tiny cavity and that suturing in particular can be difficult in such circumstances. “Today, however, we have superb technology and tiny instruments to assist us to complete such interventions, and the results are well worth it,” he concludes.

THE TAX IMPLICATIONS FOR PROPERTY BUYERS AND SELLERS Most people are familiar with the saying, “Only two things in life are certain, death and taxes.” However, the thought of navigating the tax process when purchasing property need not strike fear into you. Whether you are looking at buying your first home, an investment property or business premises we demystify the tax types and their implications.
Homes priced R2 250 001 to R10 million will pay R80 500 plus 11% of the value above R2 250 000, while homes priced from R10 000 001 and above will pay R933 000, as well as 13% of the value exceeding R10 million.
Mike Greeff, CEO of Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate offers some advice on the subject, “Buying property is a life altering decision for anyone and any legislative oversights could prove very costly. Always enlist a reputable real estate partner to assist with the process. A reliable, experienced agent will be able to guide you through the process and will be familiar with the documentation that is required.”
This means that you will pay R80 500 plus 11% of the value over R2.25 million (which in this instance means 11% of R400 000.) The total transfer duty therefore payable on your future home is R80 500 + R 44 000 = R 124 500.
If your intended property is valued at R2.65 million it falls into the R80 500 plus 11% category.
Companies that purchase immovable property will have to pay transfer duty at the same rate as individuals. The good news is that no transfer duty is payable by the seller if they are registered for VAT and the property being transferred forms part of the business operations for which the seller is registered. Capital Gains Tax Buyers are not the only one’s subject to taxes during the property transfer process, sellers are sometimes liable for a Capital Gains Tax to the South African Revenue Service. Capital Gains Tax is in essence a tax placed on the profits gained from the resale of assets. There is an exemption allowed to sellers if the property being sold is being used as their primary residence. (Not a holiday home, rental or investment property.)
Transfer Duties As a first-time buyer your biggest expense secondary to the cost of your home is the transfer duty that applies to it. A transfer duty is payable by the buyer on an immovable asset. The duty payable is proportional to the value of the asset being transferred and is implemented on a sliding scale. As per the 2017 budget, individuals buying property that costs less than R900 000 are exempt from paying a transfer duty. Properties ranging between R900 001 and R1.25 million attract a 3% duty on the value above R900 001 while properties priced between R1 250 001 and R1 750 000 will cost R10 500 plus 6% of the value exceeding R1.25 million. Properties priced from R1 750 001 to R2 250 000 will cost R40 500 plus 8% of the value exceeding R1 750 000.
The government considers the first R2 million profit gained on the sale of a primary home as CGT exempt. Capital gains tax is based on the income (from all sources) that individuals receive during the financial year. In addition to the once off primary residence exclusion of R2 million, individuals also benefit from an annual R40 000 capital gains tax exclusion. Sellers who use their home for business purposes will pay capital gains tax proportionate to the percent of the property being used for business purposes. The property must, by law, be used for more than 50% domestic use, failing which, the exclusion will fall away completely, and the sale will be taxed according to the business scale. A sound understanding of transfer duties as well as capital gains tax laws could result in significant savings during the sales process. Always seek professional assistance when buying or selling property as their experience and knowledge could save you money.

FOOD
LOCAL INGREDIENTS, GLOBAL INSPIRATION VADAS SMOKEHOUSE & BAKERY OPENS ITS DOORS
After much anticipation, Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery has opened its doors at Spier. The restaurant overlooks the rolling lawns and ancient oaks of Spier’s meticulously restored Werf – perfect for the kids to run wild on. Sharing is encouraged, with family-style platters that can be ordered for the table. Looking back on a distinguished career working in restaurants around the world and on home turf, PJ has spent much time dissecting the restaurant model.
VADAS SMOKEHOUSE & BAKERY IS RUN BY A GROUP OF LONGTIME FRIENDS & COLLEAGUES WITH A SHARED PASSION FOR FOOD AND GREAT SERVICE.
The restaurant creates a place where families and friends can join together and eat food that is carefully, ethically and healthily sourced and prepared. Vadas believes in supporting local, quality-driven businesses and practice farm-to-plate dining where simple dishes embrace and showcase the quality of produce. The restaurant serves a variety of dishes which can be shared at the table. Although smoking meats is a large focus at Vadas – think smoked brisket, juicy smoked pork with a bourbon BBQ sauce or smoked pork belly with apple ketchup – there is also a considered focus on ample, delicious vegetarian dishes. While the ingredients are hyper-local, the inspiration for the dishes is worldwide, “Why should we have boundaries of what we can do?” Vadas asks, “Our menu might go from an English pork pie, to a taco, to a ramen-style broth. It is all super tasty.” The bakery is a treasure trove of what PJ calls his ‘Sweet Surrender Pies’ – Americanstyle sweet pies such as blueberry & nectarine pie, chocolate cream pie, pecan pie and strawberry pie. Don’t forget about PJ’s now famous pastéis de nata; the Portuguese custard tarts. With an oven brought in from France, fresh sourdough and farm-loaf breads are on offer daily. Guests are welcome to enjoy these treats throughout the day at the restaurant or collect to take home.

ART
LET THERE BE LIGHT SPIER’S FIRST-EVER LIGHT ART FESTIVAL
Spier presents its first Light Art Festival from 8 December 2018 – 31 January 2019, featuring an array of artworks incorporating light and sound. “Some of the works illuminate the experience of an ethereal sky or a still lake, some play on the ability to see or not to see. Some are whimsical and flitting, ironic, some may be glimpsed at from a distance and in passing, some will require more time and consideration,” curator Jay Pather explained. The Spier Light Art Festival is one of Spier’s Growing for Good initiatives, which empower communities to create positive social and environmental change. Star attraction
A key work featured is “In die sterre geskryf” (“Written in the stars”) by Berco Wilsenach, produced in 2009 as part of a
body of work called Project for the Blind Astronomer. This work is an artistic investigation into different decoding systems with which our visible night sky can be mapped and explained to a visually impaired audience. The panels are lit from within, creating an effect of thousands of dots floating in mid-air. This creates an experience of endless space and an infinitive number of dots reflecting within each of the panels. This is the first time “In die sterre geskryf” has been exhibited outside, drawing upon the real stars above for an even more immersive artistic experience. the spier art patronage program
Wilsenach’s four-year long practical and theoretical exploration to produce this sculptural work was supported by Spier’s Arts Patronage Programme. The programme is designed to give intensive support over
an extended period (generally a period of four to five years) to artists Spier judges to be exceptional, and who we believe could greatly benefit from the creative freedom that the programme provides. It aims to advance the artist’s career within the global arena, and typically includes the production of a catalogue of work and a solo exhibition, in support of this aim. Other participants include Wim Botha, Paul Emmanuel, Tamlin Blake and Liza Grobler. The Blind Astronomer Wines
Two limited edition wines – available exclusively from our Tasting Room and online store – celebrate Berco Wilsenach’s The Blind Astronomer. Their engraved design was awarded highly commended in Best Design for a Wine Range at Drinks International magazine’s annual Wine Design Awards 2015.

FARMING
A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST THE SEASONAL SECRETS OF OUR FOOD GARDEN
Hot, long days mark the maturing of our fruits and vegetables.
AND SO SUMMER TIME IS HARVEST TIME – WHEN WE RECAP THE REWARDS OF OUR HARD WORK: THE FERTILITY THAT WE NOURISHED DURING THE QUIET TIME OF WINTER AND THE CROPS THAT WE SOWED DURING SPRING.
Harvesting is best done as early as possible and veggies must be kept cool so that they can stay fresh for the plate. Tomatoes, runner beans and cucumbers need trellising and a side dressing of vita fruit gives all our fruiting crops that extra boost they need. Fruiting crops are the ones that are making flowers and expressing themselves in with delicious fruits. We mulch our crops with a thick layer of compost, hay or grass cuttings. This helps to protect the soil from the sun and suppresses any weeds.
WE IRRIGATE LATE IN THE AFTERNOONS AS THE EARTH BREATHES IN AND THE DEW FALLS TO PREVENT LOSING PRECIOUS WATER TO EVAPORATION.
Fragrant herbs and flowers are abundant bringing lots of insect life to the gardens, attracting lots of pollinating insects and many beneficial ones that help keep the bad insects in check. We plant our soft leafy greens like lettuce in the shade of taller crops like tomatoes and sweet corn to give them some extra protection from the sun. Flowers of many plants are edible and often a good nutrient and vitamin source also adding colour to summer salads. Enjoy the abundance of summer!

SOUTH AFRICAN PRODUCER OF THE YEAR SPIER SCOOPS SA PRODUCER OF THE YEAR AND TWO VARIETAL TROPHIES AT THE INTERNATIONAL WINE AND SPIRITS COMPETITION The International Wine and Spirit Competition – arguably the world’s most prestigious wine awards – has named Spier the 2018 South African Producer of the Year. The award recognises the two trophies Spier won earlier this year: the 2018 IWSC Sauvignon Blanc Trophy, awarded to the Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and the 2018 Chenin Blanc Trophy, awarded to the Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2016. The 21 Gables wines pay tribute to Spier’s 300-year winemaking heritage and its unique architectural legacy: an unrivalled 21 Cape Dutch Gables – all beautifully preserved. “The success of the range’s two white wines on the global stage is proof of our passionate dedication to crafting single varietal wines of the highest quality – and fully expressive of the Cape’s unique terroir,” says Spier’s Cellar Master, Frans Smit. The Chenin Blanc Trophy has only ever been won by South African wineries, reinforcing South Africa’s reputation for producing excellent Chenin Blanc wines. Spier’s win brings the Sauvignon Blanc trophy to South Africa for the second time, after New Zealand dominated the category for the past three years. The IWSC Annual Awards Banquet in London brought together the elite of the wine and spirits industry to celebrate the achievements of the year, and enjoy a lavish 5-course meal during which the Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2016 was served. A golden year for Chenin
Earlier this year, the 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2016 not only won the Harold Eedes Trophy for Best Chenin Blanc at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show but also received the Trophy for Best White Wine Overall. At the 2018 Top 100 SA Wines it was awarded a Double Platinum and was also included in the Standard Bank Top 10 Chenin Blanc Challenge – an achievement that both previous vintages, 2014 and 2015, also attained. Indeed, the 21 Gables Chenin Blanc is no stranger to acclaim: the 2015 vintage won the inaugural Veritas Vertex Award – defeating 1638 other entries to be crowned the Veritas competition’s champion wine across all varietals.
Made with thick-skinned grapes from old vines, the full-bodied Chenin Blanc was fermented and matured (for 14 months) in French oak barrels. It offers ripe, baked apples and apple pie spice on the nose. The rich and complex palate is characterised by yellow fruits opulent caramel, vanilla cream and toasted cashew – all framed by a beautifully balanced acidity and supported by a sumptuously textured mouthfeel. Befitting its heritage, the Chenin Blanc is an ideal companion to South African cuisine, particularly sweeter and spicier dishes – think bobotie, smoorsnoek and waterblommetjie bredie.
The 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2016 can sit in your cellar for eight years or even longer. While it can be enjoyed now, it will reward patient drinkers with deepening intensity and complexity of flavours. A top-notch Sauvignon Blanc
The judging panel described the Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2017 as follows: “Medium, warm straw in colour with light green flecks on rim. The nose bursts with fat, rich tropical fruits that smell candied and dried. Warm apple, white pear and cantaloupe are beautifully balanced by a classic fresh herbaceousness of fresh grass and buchu. The mouthfeel is crisp,
PAGE 5
clean and playful while giving some serious mid-palate fruit weight at the same time. Finishes long and mineral.” The wine was also rated 92 points in Tim Atkins’s Annual South African Report 2018, received Double Gold at the Top 100 SA Wines 2018 and was awarded 4.5 stars by the Platter’s Wine Guide 2017. Sourced from two unique vineyards – one in the cool Tygerberg Hills, the other in Darling - this wine matured for six months on the lees before bottling.

SET YOUR BUSINESS FOR SUCCESS BY BRANDING FROM THE START!
Web Rage, a Company in Designing, has been in operation since 2009 and focuses on Branding your business. Whether it be a new website design, or create a logo, every discipline within any project entails a unique process demanding logical thinking. Our business is to know your business, and to understand your vision. If we understand your vision, we are able to provide a professional service.
Our approach is to equip our customers with success by providing a full functional website that is viewable on devices such as desktops, tablets and mobile phones. From one page websites to online shopping websites, we can design it. We can custom build your website to use features such as: registrations, login’s, bookings, and memberships.
Is your branding affecting your business positively or negatively? A core part of being in business is creating and promoting your business as a brand. From our point of view there are so many small things that can be done to improve the brand of your business. Are you still using a Gmail address? Get rid of it today! Small companies you do business with do not mind Gmail addresses, but when it comes to dealing with corporate companies, you need to provide the reassurance that you are serious about your business. The cost of a domain and hosting package is a small price to pay for securing potential business. Do you have a website that was designed a long time ago? Outdated websites negatively impact the viewers experience for many reasons: layouts that are not tablet and mobile friendly, images that are used as text, outdated scripts, content that has not been updated in a long time, and outdated scripts that make it easier for hacking websites. What would you rather have your potential customer see? With technology that has changed so much over the last decade, older websites that are unattended and not updated cause more harm to your brand than actually promoting it. If your website is not working the way it should, rather place the website “under maintenance” until you have decided to update or re-brand your website. What services do we offer? Designing - Web Rage uses the latest software in the design industry - with an eye on new trends and a passion for creativity. We can provide you with designing solutions from logos, business cards, brochures, catalogues, adverts, and books. Web Design - We make use of content management system (CMS) such as WordPress for the majority of our projects and offer dynamic website solutions.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Web Rage will submit your website to all major search engines. Customers cannot find you on the web via search engines if your SEO structure is not setup properly. It all originates from the name of your business, the way your site is designed, how your content is set out and how the keywords are used. Social Media - Website and branding on social media is essential to any business! Having your social media platforms connected to your websites, makes it easier for customers to navigate to your business from platforms of their choosing. Businesses should choose the platform that best fits their market and promote it via social media. Having a social media campaign plan is always useful as you are engaging with your customers as well as creating awareness for potential new customers. It is our goal at Web Rage to provide you with professionally designed modern websites and professional branding solutions. ARTISTS ON SHOW AT NO 5 ON HUDSON No 5 on Hudson is exhibiting a selection of eye-catching new works. Gallery owner Sandy De Bruin has hand-picked pieces by diverse local artists. Liffey Joy is a mixed media artist born in the UK. She uses materials such as ink and salt to create monochromatic works. She focuses on materiality and makes use of multiple media. Tanya Truscott is interested in the relationship between the visible world and the pictorial world of the flat canvas. She uses layers of oil paint to create depth. Working without a plan allows her to explore intuitive mark making and the role of colour in a non representational manner. Laura Wenman paints landscapes, figures and still lives, but leans towards portraiture. This award-winning artist’s preferred medium is oils because of its versatility. Her style, which is impressionistic at the moment, tends to interpret her subjects, rather than produce a frozen image. Lesley Charnock is drawn to the tonal values of bright sunlight and deep shadows. Her creations move from impressionistic to the more abstract. She is fascinated by how the temperature, value and hue of the paint changes in relation to colours around it. Nicole Pletts has been studying art since 1997. She prefers working in oils, but also loves watercolours. A versatile artist, she paints a variety of subjects. Nicole has more recently been exploring florals to get in touch with ‘peace, gentleness and femininity’. One of South Africa’s leading artists, Fiona Rowett’s work is characterised by rich, abstract forms which emphasise shape, texture and colour. She uses techniques of layering and scratching paint. Although 5 on Hudson is committed to highlighting the work of female artists, it represents both men and women. Brandon Borgelt has always had an interest in animals, collecting weird and wonderful pets. Initially dabbling in clay and photography, he became inspired to sculpt. Michaelis School of Fine Art graduate Danielle Alexander draws inspiration from Neoclassism and Baroque imagery.
She uses images of linen as subject matter, using the folds of the drapery to communicate tension and drama. Sharleen Boaden creates impressionistic paintings from her studio in Ballito. Soft, romantic brush strokes, best expressed in florals and whimsical figures, make her creations instantly recognizable. Artist Lyn Northam has been the recipient of many awards, including the SASA Best Watercolour and SASA Best Oil Award. Former Miss South Africa, Sandy De Bruin’s passion for Fine Art leans towards oil painting, often inspired by her travels. Her focus is on the ability of artwork to make one feel various emotions, as well as to how these artworks translate into our living spaces and environments. LIFE’S A BEACH AS CITY KICKS OFF SUMMER FESTIVAL
Photo L - R: Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Councillor Mzwakhe Nqavashe, and Alderman JP Smith
The City has deployed additional staff for the summer season, including more than 300 lifeguards who will be on duty at beaches and swimming pools; shark spotters at eight beaches; and specialised Law Enforcement and Fire and Rescue Service dive crews with watercraft to assist in the event of sea rescues. The City is working closely with the National Sea Rescue Institute and other-role players to ensure the safety of beachgoers. During the summer season the City will also conduct joint operations focusing on life-saving, law enforcement, first aid and beach cleaning to promote a safe, clean and enjoyable experience for all visitors and residents.
“The City boasts 10 Blue Flag beaches and it’s not only these that attract thousands of daily local and international visitors during the peak season. Months of preparation go into making a day at the beach a relaxing time for everyone, but for that to happen visitors need to stick to the rules,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith. At the heart of the Safety campaign are four key messages that encourage beachgoers: not to drink and swim, not to leave children unsupervised, to be aware of rip currents, and to swim only between the flags where lifeguards are present. The City services 47 beaches along its 307km of coastline, along with 22 tidal pools and 14 resorts. Beach attendance can exceed 100 000 visitors per day during the peak summer season and, while the enforcement agencies will be out in full force to conduct patrols and check vehicles at various beach access points, it is not a job we can do alone. The City’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department will support the promotion of child safety through the Identikidz project. All children arriving at the beaches will be registered and issued with an identification tag/armband. In the event that the child is separated from their caregiver/parent, staff will work with other role-players to ensure the reunification of lost children. Approximately R27,5 million has been set aside for this and it is foreseen that 1 888 temporary positions will be created to cater for the seasonal demand, including over weekends and on public holidays. The City’s 24-hour Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) will be adequately staffed to ensure that all incidents received are logged and dispatched to the relevant service providers. Depending on the situation or event, additional staff will be brought in to cover the influx of calls. For emergency call 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline

GREAT VINE-RESOLUTIONS Only 8% of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions. And if your highly improbable goals aren’t met, you feel defeated. All this even before the first grapes are harvested in the southern hemisphere. Well, this promise to self to be better, do better and live better is way more achievable than what most people think. Be it for better health, career, education, to volunteer, make new friends, settle down, be more spiritual or simply spend more quality time with family, then look no further. These grape expectations are offered to you on a silver platter at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate. Here are 8 New Year’s resolutions they can help you with: Better education: There is no way on this vine planted earth that you will ever be fully learned about wine. Wine can now be made successfully in some of the most obscure places on this planet, although cool climate regions remain some of the most sought after locations. Visit Benguela Cove for a tasting or a cellar and vineyard tour to expand your wine knowledge and brush up on that wine jargon. Health: If enjoyed in moderation, wine can be very beneficial to your health. Red wine contains a natural type of phenol called resveratrol that, amongst many other benefits, acts like an antioxidant to promote heart health and longevity. Volunteer: Work has never been this much fun. Keep an eye on the Benguela Cove diary for all the harvest festivities, including your voluntary participation in grape stomping. Career: Ever thought about blending your own wine? We can assist you with a wine blending experience and who knows, it may kick start a new career in wine. Make new friends: South Africans love to be outside on a sunny day. Join for a pontoon cruise on the lagoon or a round of adventure golf and be sure to make new friends.
Be more spiritual: Learn more about tea rituals at the Tea Terrace. Benguela Cove will also be introducing monthly yoga classes to help you stay in tune with your inner self. Join for a morning class or watch the sun go down in a cobra pose. Spending quality time with family: Benguela Cove offers a one stop destination that caters to all - from the little ones to the furry ones. It is also a meeting place for family and friends to enjoy good food and good wine with great views in excellent company. Settle down: Ever wanted to own that special and serene place with sweeping views of the ocean and vineyards? It might just be the year to realise the dream of owning your own property in this real estate heaven. Visit www.benguelacove.co.za for more information and fulfilled 2019 experiences
A FLAGSHIP TREATMENT FOR CARROL BOYES STORE Product extensions such as chocolate, wine and textiles have broadened this original footprint and needed their own newly designed fixtures for optimum display. “Due to the expansion in the product range, we now have durable, fit-for-purpose units with flexible shelving solutions to withstand the foot traffic of a retail store, but discreet enough to let the products shine. The refit enabled the creation of more display areas than the store had previously, with each one showcasing the different ranges on offer at the store.” The use of walnut in key shop fitted elements, paired with a timber-look, chevronpatterned floor, represents the warmth of a sophisticated home. In order to create the illusion of space in the store, bronze mirrors were incorporated into the interior décor. Smoky glass was used to add to the premium boutique effect.
Carrol Boyes recently commissioned international award-winning design and interior architectural practice, Dakota Design, to re-envision its V&A Waterfront store. The intention was to reinvigorate and refine the Carrol Boyes brand in order to appeal to the next generation of consumers while remaining a timeless, high-end exclusive store. The new concept focuses on refurbishing the interior layout and finishes with the aim of taking the familiar style of Carrol Boyes into the future. The Carrol Boyes product range encompasses over 1 000 items which include the company’s trademark metals and materials such as pewter, spun and cast aluminum, stainless steel, chrome-plated zinc, wood, leather, ceramic and glass.
The Carrol Boyes logo was transformed into an LED-illuminated, window-mounted sign which is fixed to the shop front. This creates the impression that it’s floating, making it more visible and giving it greater impact. Directional LED lighting was also used throughout the store to highlight various products. LED lighting generates less heat which requires less cooling in the store and is more environmentally friendly. The design of the store was driven by the Carrol Boyes product, to showcase the product with maximum visibility on a platform with strong contrasts to the reflections of the products. The feature dining table at the entrance of the store creates a platform for selected Carrol Boyes items to be displayed and the cement pendant lighting above the table further adds to the home-like atmosphere. Call-out spaces were created in the store to highlight various items. For instance, the feature wall behind the point-of-sale illuminates Carrol Boyes’ bestselling iconic items.

Cape Town’s Iconic V&A Waterfront Gains Signature La Parada An oasis of Spanish-inspired old world style in the V&A Waterfront, Capetonian stylemongers and discerning visitors alike are already making the newest La Parada their all day port of call! It was just a matter of time before one of South Africa’s hottest dining, cocktail and socialising restaurant names made its way to the V&A Waterfront. With a breathtaking view of the harbour and Table Mountain, the two-storeyed space makes a statement on so many levels. Dressed in a vibrant palette that’s inspired by authentic Spanish eateries and design, the new La Parada features beautifully coloured patterned floors, a floor-toceiling wall of jungle print wallpaper, a slew of bespoke furniture items and eclectic artworks and collectables, curlicued balustrades that take guests upstairs to the private whisky bar called The Durrage and a tumble of indoor plants that add to the sultry atmosphere - the mix of Spanish jazz and upbeat contemporary music completes the sensory scene. Add to this one of the most dynamic, people-friendly menus in town and its no wonder that this new restaurant is already rocking! La Parada has an all-day mentality and a menu to match. The mornings see guests soaking up the sun and harbour views over coffees and breakfasts while sitting on the conservatory style terrace with a view (breakfast stars range from the Crispy Jamon Benedict to Chorizo and White Bean Puree on Toast and S’mores French Toast – a marshmallow and chocolate French Toast confection). By the time its noon, things start to heat up – the cocktail bar staff see their first orders come through and so the vibrancy and extrovert spirit of La Parada comes to the fore. Here it’s all about food and the sense of celebration that comes with dining together.
Aside from the enormously popular tapas menu, there is also a menu of mains, featuring bold flavoured specialities including the much-loved Wagyu Beef Burger, as well as Sharing specialities which are designed to be enjoyed by three to four people – like the Del Mar seafood platter style offering and the De La Tierra meat based feast.
Like the impressive interiors, the menu takes its cue from the tapas bars that have put Spain on the global culinary map. La Parada’s tapas plates are designed to be shared and with so many seriously delicious offerings, it’s no surprise that the brand has become so well known for this. Signatures like the spicy Tuna Tacos, saffron-cream Mussels and palm sugar crusted Pork Belly are firm favourites but there are scores of other choices to satisfy any hunger – and good news, they’re designed to suit carnivores, vegetarians and vegans alike.
“The beauty of the new La Parada is that our menu and the space itself lends itself to so many different moods and occasions – you could meet for a drink and a tapas plate or two in the elegant bar area, we’ve got space for tables of twenty or more downstairs, there are quieter tables on the terrace overlooking the harbour and upstairs we’ve got a private bar and tables for meetings or more intimate dinners and drinks parties”, says Marketing Manager for the Life & Brand Portfolio Tahlia Bester.

Benguela Cove Releases New MCC - Cuvée58 Celebrate the magic of pure elegance and artistry. To help Cuvée58 build on its already charming facets, we’ve added three chocolates to the mix. To echo gised day filled with fun, laughter and activities. The cool Walker Bay is renowned for its white varietals and Sau- the bright acidity of the sparkling wine, we investigated the taste of vignon Blanc was an obvious choice to create a new Methode Cap the new Ruby chocolate, taking the world by storm with its natural Classique that will differentiate it from their more serious MCC pink colour. This chocolate was only introduced to the world last called Joie De Vivre. The Cuvée58 is made to enjoy chilled - similar year by Barry Callebaut and became commercially available on 19 to Italian Prosecco, stylish yet refreshing and delicious on a hot January 2018. This variety has been in development since 2004 but only unveiled at a private event in Shanghai 5 September 2017. summer days – and served with al fresco dishes. With the growing interest from young couples who want to tie the knot at Benguela Cove, cellar master Johann Fourie also wanted to create a wine that would add a bright and celebratory feel but at the same time highlight the precision that is always involved when crafting a method cap classique. Only having spent 12 months on the lees, the wine is fresh, delicious and made to dazzle you at classy weddings right through to a casual beach party.
“What makes it different is that the Ruby cocoa bean ferments slowly, resulting in a higher acidity, thus pairing well with wines that has a high acid profile. Not to hide its natural colour, we only dusted the chocolates with a shimmer, celebrating flavour facets in their shape - lemongrass buttercream with a hazelnut paste, zesty pear buttercream with a hazelnut paste and a wild card in the mix filled with marzipan that simply completed the threesome in flavour.”
Inspiration: Meticulously crafted into 58 facets, a round brilliant diamond echoes the precision the winemaker applies to his craft when producing method cap classique. The finest detail is brought to light when vivid aromas of toffee apple, pear, grass sprouts and florals explode on the surface. True to its origin on the oceans edge, cool climate Sauvignon Blanc steals the spotlight with a bright acidity, pleasantly balanced with a tangy finish.
“Playing with textures that included different, natural flavoured ganache and cookie-mixtures, we settled on the buttercream that creates this wow moment when the butter seems to boost the natural fizz of the wine with flavours like pear and lemongrass lingering with the freshness of the wine itself. Taste and explore and see how these chocolates celebrate the profile and texture of the MCC.”
Franschhoek Vigneron Diners Club Winemaker of the Year It’s an event that everyone wants to attend, and when they do they dress up to the nine’s, and Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Awards once again lived up to its sparkling reputation. La Residence was once again the venue for the awards evening, which was attended by the who’s who of the wine and media industry, and saw Môreson’s Clayton Reabow announced as the 2018 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in the Chardonnay category for his Môreson Mercator Chardonnay 2017. Clayton is no stranger to this competition, winning the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year Award in 2009. According to the sponsors The Winemaker of the Year award is characterised by a desire to be ‘always looking, always learning, always arriving.’ Since its inception in 1981, this is still regarded as the most sought after award within the winemaking fraternity. The Franschhoek Wine Valley is renowned for producing excellent Chardonnay, and one of the reasons for this is the high diurnal temperature variation in the vineyards.
The difference between the region’s day and night temperatures during the growing season fluctuate between 13 - 15˚C, and this large fluctuation allows for natural acid preservation in the berries at night (malic acid) and optimal sugar accumulation during the day without prolonged metabolic activity. This gives the area a wider spectrum and diversity of styles to play with when it comes to Chardonnay production, and in doing so creating optimal growing conditions for this popular grape variety. Clayton regards the Mercator as their benchmark white wine forming the pinnacle of Chardonnay production on Môreson Wines. With over 20 hectares of small vineyard parcels planted exclusively to Chardonnay, the Mercator has been grown and produced from two mature vineyards for the last 11 years. Only the cuvee juice is used in the production of this wine ensuring absolute pure fruit with delicate oak integration after being matured in French oak for 11 months. Like all great Chardonnay’s, the purpose is to produce a wine with focus, energy, precision and restraint.

Dieckmann Set To Swim for MS at 2019 Sanlam Cape Mile
THE NEWSPAPER
Torpedo SwimRun Series Expands again - now in Franschhoek
Claudia Dieckmann will once again spearhead a group of swimmers that will take on the Western Cape’s premier open water swim, the 5th annual Sanlam Cape Mile brought to you by Sanlam Investments at the majestic Eikenhof Dam at the Elgin-Grabouw Country Club on Sunday, 17 February 2019 in support of Multiple Sclerosis South Africa (MSSA). A keen swimmer, Dieckmann was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2011 at the age of 31. MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. “The Sanlam Cape Mile is such a well-run event,” says Dieckmann. “In 2018 we had close to 30 people swimming as part of Team Swim4MS. We felt very welcome and the vibe created in the festival village was electrifying. The event definitely exceeded our expectations and was a great fundraising effort with close to R70 000 being raised for the cause. Fundraising is always a goal, as having a chronic and potentially disabling condition like MS is financially stressful. Other than this, we hope to increase the awareness of MS at the 2019 event.” “I want people to realize that the MS they may have witnessed in the past is not the same as MS today,” continues Dieckmann. “MS is not a death sentence. With advancements in research and medication it is possible to live a fulfilling life. You just have to manage your symptoms. Management includes a variety of activities such as medication, a change in lifestyle and having a great Neurologist with whom

you can discuss any concerns and possible treatment plans. Exercise is essential as it keeps the muscles moving, not to mention its psychological benefits. I am a huge advocate of the benefits of swimming for MS. The cool, weightless environment is ideal. That is why the Sanlam Cape Mile is the perfect event for our cause. We are really looking forward to taking part in 2019 and would love to have more swimmers Swim4MS on the day.”

The Torpedo SwimRun Series is growing, with the recent announcement that the newest event, Torpedo SwimRun Val de Vie, will be happening on 3 February 2019 on the well-known Franschhoek lifestyle estate, and will draw both competitive athletes and beginner swimrunners who want to try out the sport. Swimrun is a relatively new sport that originated in Sweden, and offers offroad and open-water adventure along coastal and inland waterways, with routes designed around the natural environment and with distances varying from race to race. Torpedo SwimRun is leading the way in developing the sport of swimrun in South Africa, and are rolling out a series of these events for different levels of athletes. Former Olympic swimming gold medalist Ryk Neethling, Marketing Director for Val de Vie, is so taken with the sport that he has entered the November Torpedo SwimRun Cape event, and is very happy to be hosting a Torpedo SwimRun on the Franschhoek estate in 2019. November 18 saw the third edition of the pinnacle Torpedo SwimRun Cape. This event has grown significantly since the inaugural event in January 2017, which was also the first swimrun event to be launched in the country, and now attracts top athletes who will be competing for R100k in prize money. Second Skins, a South African company that has been custom-making performance-enhancing sportswear since 1986, tailored the yellow Torpedo vests that are becoming synonymous with SwimRun. Each Cape podium finisher receives a special edition black Torpedo Second Skin. Torpedo SwimRun Wild launched in the Wilderness area in September this year, with a 6km prologue and a 26km main event made up of multiple segments of swimming, running and “swambling”, which is a rugged combination of swimming and scrambling over rocks. A strong SwimRun community has developed over the course of 2017 - 2018, and the sport is fast gaining momentum, especially amongst lifesavers whose strength lies in the open water swimming, and amongst triathletes who are used to the multisport discipline. SwimRun is different in that athletes run in their wetsuits and swim in their running shoes - there are no transitions like you have in triathlon. Open water swimmers such as Ryan Stramrood and Mark de Klerk have also embraced the sport, with Stramrood having started running regularly in order to compete in both the second Cape event, as well as in September’s Wild.
Open Streets Sustainable Mobility In Cape Town On 27 January 2019, Bree Street will become Open Streets for half a day. This is the third Open Streets Day in the 2018/19 series and, if previous Open Streets on Bree are anything to go by, it’ll be a day full of colour, activity and self-propelled mobility. Building on the success of previous years and thanks to the financial support of the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI), Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT) is partnering with the City of Cape Town and the Central City Improvement District (CCID) to demonstrate to all residents across the city how a car-free, people-first CBD could look. “Open Streets offers a great opportunity for Cape Town’s residents to be active participants in experiencing the unifying potential of their community. At a recent open streets event I was happy to see the community come out, engage one another and experience an inclusive, safe and welcoming space. I look forward to seeing other communities enjoy this fun and thought provoking experience,” said Executive Mayor Dan Plato. By closing down a portion of the iconic Bree Street to traffic, it’ll be transformed into an inclusive and neutral space for all to enjoy. Although some might consider it just a party or a festival, we hope they will also become aware of joining the ‘movement for better movement’. This includes taking the opportunity to leave their cars at home and test a different mode of transport for getting to Open Streets. The aim of Open Streets is to radically increase the use and ownership of streets as public space and, with that in mind, this summer the Open Streets Days series has returned to the five areas where the programme has taken root: Woodstock, Bellville, City Centre, Langa and Mitchells Plain. Open Streets Cape Town cofounder and managing director Marcela says: “The invitation to residents is to use the Open Streets platform to reimagine these different parts of the city. Closed to motorised vehicles and open to people, roads become spaces for walkers, cyclists, skaters and wheelchair users to move safely, and for showcasing of local music, dance and community-based initiatives.

These days bring people together and inspire action. “We believe this kind of experiential learning could lead to real behaviour change and increased advocacy for non-motorised transport.” “As our cities adapt to deal with climate change and accommodate increasing populations in an inclusive and sustainable way, we need to transform our mobility systems.” “Cycling, skating and walking have the benefits of improved health, economic savings, reduced carbon emissions and strengthening of social fabric. Instead of waiting for our public transport systems to be fixed to be able to ditch our private vehicles and escape traffic congestion, we can start somewhere with small changes to our commuting habits and join the global movement of citizens embracing nonmotorised transport.”
