Battery Park is a new 12,000 sqm urban park situated at a key entranceway to one of Africa’s most visited tourist destinations, the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Cruise tourism brings wave

Developed as the nucleus of a larger urban vision for the district, the site includes a park and piazza that effectively conceal a 1,206-bay parking facility as well as new pedestrian routes to invigorate the precinct with activity.

The MS Queen Elizabeth and the MSC Musica luxury cruise liners docked at the Cape Town harbour during the month of January 2019. In recent years Cape town welcomed numerous cruise ships to its shores. The Queen Elizabeth cruise liner is no stranger to the city’s shores and carries 2,068 passengers and 996 crew members. The MSC Musica has 1,268 passenger cabins which can accommodate 2,550 passengers in double occupancy and is served by about 990 crew members.

The site is of archaeological importance as it contains the remnants of one of the city’s oldest structures, coastal fortification the Amsterdam Battery.

The cruise industry has experienced significant growth from just 6 050 passengers in 2012, to 29,269 passengers in 2016, and 31,035 passengers in 2017. During the 2016/17 cruise season, approximately 19 vessels visited the Cape Town harbour.

First Official 1km Ice-Swim Event At The South Pole South Africa is the proud leader of the first official 1km ice swim event held in Antarctica waters! On 25 November 2018, 00:15 South Africa time, the gruelling wait was over. Ram Barkai of South Africa successfully led 14 ice swimmers from across the globe to complete the first official 1km ice-swim at the bottom of the earth.

Cape Town was named the ‘World’s Leading Festival and Events Destination’ at the 2018 World Travel Awards that took place at the Pátio da Galé, in Lisbon, Portugal recently. This accolade was off the back of being voted ‘Africa’s Leading Festival and Events Destination’ in October.

Others have swum in Antarctica waters before, but it has never been an official event. Barkai, who has worked almost 2 years to put this major event together, applied International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) rules to make it official and will also apply for a Guinness World Record now that it is done.

This is yet another milestone for Cape Town and this accolade is reaping the reward for the City’s Events Strategy that enables event packaging and promotion for the tourism industry.

The award shows that this administration is constantly enhancing its strategy to be in line with international trends and positioning Cape Town as a global city.

“There are concerns that ice swimming is way too dangerous for the average person but the individuals who are getting into ice swimming are anything but average”, observed Steven Munatones of World Open Water Swimming Association. “From what I have seen the organizers and ice swimmers are as knowledgeable and experienced in the cold as they are responsible and safety-conscious.”

“This sport attracts truly driven and unique individuals who are well-prepared physiologically and psychologically to handle swims up to 1000 meters - and longer - in the cold air and water conditions under 5°C.” After a decade of ice swimming Barkai and his ice swimming colleagues around the world have learned a significant amount of how much the human body can acclimate to cold water and how best to implement the rewarming process.

Summer has brought with it, new hope, new energy and most- excitedly, new life! Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn has welcomed fluffy cheetah cubs, a flawless baby brown-lemur, Egyptian geese and a baby Flying Fox to their family!

A test swim was done on 22 November after which expedition leader Ram settled on a location, Port Lockroy, a natural harbour in front of the Antarctic Peninsula, to do the official swim. The strategy involved heats of 3 or 4 swimmers per heat who were accompanied by support and rescue staff in rubber ducks. After the first 2 successful heats comprising 7 swimmers, currents and wind started to create havoc and boat management had to pull up anchor to sail to the next possible swimming location, Mikkelson Bay, trusting weather will allow the remaining 7 swimmers to complete the swim.

At Mikkelson Bay they were left with a very narrow weather window and decided to combine heat 3 and 4 - their only chance to get all swimmers through. The very last swimmer to enter the water was expedition leader Ram Barkai who again had to wait a gruelling while for a weather gap before he could successfully complete the swim.

While others pack their thickest jackets to visit the South Pole, these ice-swimmers appeared in Speedo’s on rubber ducks alongside the OneOcean expedition cruiser, RCSG, to swim in -1.4 Deg C waters. Support staff and South African Emergency Physician expert, Dr Sean Gottschalk, were ready to perform rescue operations if needed but swimmers were mentally and medically fit to withstand the extreme conditions. Waiting upon a weather gap that would allow the swim was of the hardest challenges they experienced. The weather changed constantly and interrupted the event, which really tested swimmers’ psychological endurance.

New Urban Park At V&A Waterfront Pays Homage To Historic Amsterdam Battery (Continue from page 1) The historical remnants are now perched eight metres above the new canal running through the site at a lower level.

During construction of Battery Park archaeological excavations revealed former datums which were used to inform the design. The raised park has been kept at the battery’s original inner courtyard level whilst planted edges above retail units on the piazza represent the estimated natural ground level that fronted the battery. Various architectural and landscaped elements reflect the structure’s original footprint, such as semi-circular curved pathways, concrete additions to the rear ramparts, splayed canal-facing walls and concrete-clad structures - giving visitors an authentic sense of the battery’s former size. An axial visual connection to Cape Town’s Noon Gun on Signal Hill has also been retained, thus preserving the site’s historic sightline.

This provided a unique opportunity for architecture and urban design firm dhk – to pay homage to the historic landmark whilst incorporating a parking facility and providing spaces for leisure and recreational activities. The project forms part of an urban design framework created by dhk for the V&A’s previously underutilised Canal District that facilitates the reconnection of the historical city centre and De Waterkant to the V&A. The aim was to create a publicly accessible park which lies at the nexus of a multitude of new pedestrian routes stitching the new district into the surrounding urban fabric and thereby helping to invigorate the area.

The Amsterdam Battery was erected by the Dutch along Cape Town’s coastline in 1784 to defend the city from seaborne and land attacks. In the 1800s the building was used to house prisoners; and was later remodelled and strengthened by the British but eventually abandoned. In 1905 the battery was largely demolished to make way for railway connections to the port, leaving behind only a small portion of its rear curved walls.

On the elevated park level, visitors can explore landscaped gardens with trees and stone-clad planters, meandering walkways with built-in benches, a concrete skatepark, basketball court and new pedestrian routes. Throughout the park and piazza cantilevered steel pergolas scale the design and provide much-needed shade.

The lower piazza level contains 11 boutique retail units that line the splayed canal-facing walls and form an active eastern edge to the new canal pedestrian route. The intention behind the piazza was to activate the canal via a range of water sports and provide a link between the V&A and the CBD - encouraging a pedestrianised environment. Referencing the battery’s original façade, loosely packed stone-filled gabion walls shroud the parking facility and stone-clad planters contain fynbos and waterwise plants.

Historic cannons from Amsterdam Battery found scattered throughout the V&A by the Cannon Association of South Africa and preserved for the development of the park are now on display inside the interpretation pavilion. The artefacts sit on top of precast concrete plinths, made to resemble old timber cannon carriages, allowing them to protrude through the embrasures and overlook the canal.

Cruise Tourism Brings Wave Of Economic Opportunities To Our Shores (Continue from page 1) The cruise tourism industry has shown significant year-on-year growth and makes a substantial contribution not only to this city’s economy but, to the South African economy at large. The recent construction of a dedicated cruise terminal, funded by the V&A Waterfront, has proven to be a worthwhile venture and it is already showing a massive return on investment.

Without a doubt, the cruise liner industry offers enormous potential for tourism growth. With the average daily tourist spend of between R501 – R1 000 (excluding accommodation), one can appreciate the boost this gives to our city’s economy.

The average spend by an international tourist per trip is R8,400 in-destination (while in Cape Town), and a R10,600 prepaid spend (before a traveller arrives on our shores).

The domestic average spend per trip is R1,280 and can be broken down as follows by purpose of travel: (R2,780 for business purposes, R2 290 for holiday visitors, R1 740 on medical expenses and R890 when visiting friends and relatives).

Figures from Cape Town Tourism indicate that the projected value of the cruise tourism industry between 2017 and 2027 is estimated to be in the region of R220 billion. Cruise ships carrying around 2 000 passengers result in spending to the value of R2 million per day.

Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management, Councillor James Vos, said the cruise industry had the potential to provide substantial economic benefits. These economic benefits arise from a number of sources such as the spending power by cruise passengers and crew, the shoreside

staffing by cruise liners for tour operations, the spending by cruise liners for goods and services necessary for cruise operations, and the spending for port services and maintenance.

“Based on the number of confirmed bookings for the 2019/20 cruise season, we can already see a dramatic increase in the number of vessels due to visit our port and city,” added Alderman Vos.

Revolutionary New School Opens Its Doors In Sunningdale The progressive teaching approach is based on the school’s specific model which comprises the Reggio Emilia approach in the Pre-Preparatory phase, and the Socratic approach underpinned by a strong technological bias in the Preparatory stage.

More than 200 children from Cape Town’s Western Seaboard suburbs and further afield, ranging from those in Grade 000 to Grade 6, have enrolled in Rallim Preparatory, one of the City’s most innovative and progressive primary schools, that has opened its doors in Sunningdale for the first time this year.

Surrounded by nine hectares of school grounds, Rallim Preparatory is a new R120 million complex designed specifically to accommodate the school’s groundbreaking methodology. Principal Colleen Millar has described the school as “A modern learning environment set to transform the educational landscape through an innovative and progressive approach in its singular vision to redesign education for the 21st century.” Housed in light-infused buildings covering a footprint of more than 5,087 sqm the school is entirely designed and built to be in line with its alternative pedagogic system.

Prominent on Berkshire Boulevard in Sunningdale, the project, with its collection of integrated structures and spaces, is the result of a partnership between the developers of the suburb, Garden Cities, and the school’s management, Rallim Preparatory Modern Learning Environment. Garden Cities, which celebrates the centenary of its establishment this year, has a history of having produced 16 major suburbs and housing developments around the Cape Peninsula and the northern areas starting with Pinelands, in 1922. Chairman of the company, Sean Stuttaford, the great-grandson of the founder, Richard Stuttaford, says that Rallim Preparatory is part of the broad obligation the Board and Executive of Garden Cities feels to improving learning and training within its area of activity in South Africa.

“Rallim Preparatory, with its revolutionary approach must take a lead in changing the way education is practised, and by its example, make it more effective and relevant for all the children of South Africa,” he says. The non-profit company has an on-going commitment to education through its provision of school sites in its developments, a bursary programme for tertiary study, participation in a UWC science learning centre programme, and the building of school halls for under-resourced schools in the Western Cape. A hundred halls will have been completed this year.

While further extensions to the Rallim Preparatory buildings are planned, currently, the school can accommodate 968 children in the pre-preparatory and preparatory grades. A high school will follow.

Lights, Camera, Action - Cape Films To Feature On The International Stage The Cape Town film sector is geared to make its mark at a number of prestigious international festivals, including the International Film Festival in Rotterdam (IFFR), the Gothenburg Film Festival, the Berlinale International Film Festival and the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (or FESPACO).

Award-winning documentary ‘Sisters of the Wilderness’, directed and shot by Cape Town’s Karen Slater, prepares to premiere internationally for the first time at IFFR. Set in the oldest game park in Africa, HluhluweiMfolozi park, ‘Sisters of the Wilderness’ tells the story of five young Zulu women venturing into the wilderness for the first time on a journey of healing and self-discovery, reminding us that we are all intimately linked to nature. Next on the agenda is Gothenburg Film Festival, where two Cape Town produced films continue their global festival run. Spier Films’ ‘The Harvesters’, and Big World Cinema’s ‘Rafiki’ are both in consideration.

Berlinale follows, with trailblazing director Jenna Bass’s ‘Flatland’ being selected to make its World Premiere on the Prestigious Panorama stage of the International Film Festival.

The Panorama section is seen as the heart of the Berlinale and is a global boost for films to achieve selection. Panorama highlights an important mix of international art house and politically themed drama’s and documentaries. Set in the Karoo town of Beaufort West ‘Flatland’ is a contemporary, feminist Western; a journey of selfdiscovery for three different but equally trapped women. Other local names to look out for are Cape Town’s producer Tamsin Ranger and distributor Sydelle Willow Smith.

Socially, culturally, and artistically diverse: the Berlinale Talents class of 2019, with 250 participants, is full of innovators like Cape Town distributor, Sydelle Willow Smith who goes on tour with “Sunshine Cinema” - a mobile, solar-powered movie theatre that makes curated film series accessible to a broad audience beyond traditional movie theatres, while encouraging dialogue.

Lastly at the end of February, the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) in Burkina Faso, held biennially in Ouagadougou, has selected four locally connected films out of twenty to run in competition for the FESPACO grand prize – the prestigious Gold Stallion of Yennenga. The films include: ‘Five Fingers For Marseilles’ by Michael Matthews, ‘Sew The Winter To My Skin’ by Jahmil X.T. Qubeka plus two of Cape Town’s Big World produced films ‘Rafiki’ and ‘Akasha’.

Bee part of the building process at Fynbos Enterprises After a long day at her pizza restaurant in Pringle Bay Sunra drove her assistant, Lisby to Kleinmond. A feeling of deep unease gripped her as she watched an ominous line of fire being pushed by the south easterly winds towards Pringle Bay. “At this time it appeared that Pringle Bay would be spared the fire as it was traveling quite high up along the Betty's Bay Mountains, but it did look like as though the smallholdings at the foot of the mountain was definitely in a precarious position,” By midnight Sunra fell asleep, exhausted and very concerned. Somewhere in the early morning hours, she was woken up by the searing words of her husband Martin: “The wind turned during the night. All our bees have been burned.”

Sunra could not grasp the extent of the carnage until she stood by the pitiful little piles of burned wood, where once there were buzzing hives of bees protecting their queen, fertilizing hectares of flowers all around, and producing their organic honey in a fynbos paradise. The honey and beeswax lay melted on the blackened ground.

Until recently, Sunra Mostert’s life in Pringle Bay was simple, but meaningful.

Having grown up on a farm, and presently a beekeeper, she started each day in the veld with the bees. Early every morning, she climbed the mountain and greeted her Creator. Sunra allowed herself to become one with the sun, the veld, and with the wonder of nature.

Sunra’s heart ached for the terrible loss of all the fauna and flora, powerless to the inferno, and for the humble, brave and loyal bees who had worked so hard in winds and weather and in the end, refusing to abandon their queen, had burned with her.

Sunra wept as her dream went up in flames. Honey was the foundation upon which Fynbos Enterprises was built and now her main livelihood was gone.

Ten years ago, Sunra took up the challenge to source and bottle pure, raw, unadulterated, organic honey. The bees in the Western Cape are under a lot of stress due to brood diseases, drought, poisons and many other factors.

“The advantage of beekeeping in this area is that no pesticides are sprayed here, so my Hangklip Honey is probably the closest to organic honey,” says Sunra. Her reputation is the delivery of ethical, pure, raw and unadulterated honey under the Hangklip brand. Over the years she has built up a loyal customer base who travel from far to obtain Fynbos Enterprise products.

Last year she sold over 3 tons of unadulterated honey.

On Thursday, 10 January 2019 everything changed overnight with the Betty's Bay / Pringle Bay fires that caused great destruction in the Kogel Bay Biosphere. It was peak season and all the small businesses were working extra hours to accommodate the influx of tourists to the area.

It was Martin’s dream to retire from the Police force in 6 years’ time, to become a full time beekeeper.

There was one small ray of light - as they walked through the burned veld, they found a few stands with some bee-life. “The traumatised surviving bees must be re-housed as soon as possible.” With the help of friends, sympathetic artists, clients and business people, Sunra will start to rebuild the bee population in the beloved valleys.

“Since it is honey flow season now, it is crucial to begin as quickly as possible,” Sundra concludes.

Taking place at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club on Saturday, 23 and Sunday, 24 February 2019, XTERRA South Africa has an exciting “team category” that allows swimmers, mountain bikers and trail runners to team up and experience the action of the largest XTERRA in the world.

XTERRA Grabouw has become an annual event for friends Tommie Kruger (Grabouw), Ryal de Waal (Stellenbosch) and Francois Groenewald (Grabouw) with each person completing one leg of this premium off-road triathlon.

Kruger (59) will start the race with the 1.5km swim. “I started swimming in high school when I joined the swimming squad at Paarl Boys High,” says Kruger. “I am not much of a cyclist or a runner. By entering as part of a team I can be part of XTERRA, while doing something that I like. I love the absolute madness at the start of the swim. We once came second in the men’s team category and we’d like to improve on this. Personally I’d like to improve my time for the swim. I will also take part in the Sanlam Cape Mile which will be held at the same venue the

Kruger will hand the baton over to Ryal de Waal (53) who will take on the +-25.6km MTB discipline. “I got to know Tommie when I started spearfishing off of his boat,” says de Waal. “I knew that he was a good swimmer and suggested that we should enter XTERRA as a team.” He said that he knew someone in Grabouw who was a good runner. The rest is history. “I like XTERRA because I enjoy the “off-road” stuff. XTERRA’s MTB course is always challenging and because of the “shorter” distance, it is always flat box from the start which makes it a hard, but rewarding ride. The single tracks in Grabouw are always in good shape and great fun. Our goal will be to finish Top 10 overall and podium in the team category. My personal goal will be to try and set up a good position for the team when Francois starts the run. I know he can only improve our position as he is always one of the fastest runners on the day.”

Francois Groenewald (32) will take on the final leg of XTERRA which is a ±12.4km trail run. “No one should miss out on a world class event, especially if it is in your home town,” says Groenewald. “XTERRA’s trail run course is tough, but rewarding.

When aiming to run 4 minute kilometres the terrain awakens in front of you full of quick turns, sharp climbs and soft sand. Entering as part of a team definitely adds excitement to the race, while sharing the experience with friends just makes it extra special. Our team’s combined age speaks for itself in experience. Tommie is an exceptionally strong swimmer, while Ryal just does not know how to give up. My goal will be to run the fastest time on the day.”

Brain health to take centre stage in 2019 Brain health is set to take centre stage in 2019 with research showing that nutrition, sleep and stress management are among the most important factors influencing mental wellness.

Health expert, Vanessa Ascencao, says there’s an increasing global focus on brain health while an informal survey of popular health books shows that those on mental health are now more popular than books on diet and exercise.

Nutrition, stress and sleep play a major role in mental health. Research shows that one in three adults don’t get enough sleep and Ascencao says disrupted sleep or getting less than seven hours a day may contribute to mental distress, depression and anxiety. Lack of sleep is also associated with cardiovascular risk and obesity.

Additionally, a balanced diet, effective stress management and high quality supplements are important for brain health and general wellness, adds Ascencao.

She says research shows that a lack of essential nutrients may contribute to poor mental health while there is increasing evidence linking diet with mental health and for the select use of supplements to address deficiencies.

“Many high-quality supplements may contribute to brain health. In particular, scientists have found that the enzyme booster PQQ helps improve brain function, learning and memory. And frankly, when it comes to people they have mastered all the tricks in the book from how to use the most eloquent phrases, donning the best suit or slapping on the latest “luminous glow” foundation to look their best. Because yes, most of the time we only have that one chance to impress. Imagine only being given one chance a year to make a wine that will not only sell well but will also create a following and set a trajectory of consistent quality. Winemakers only have one chance a year to do this, maybe only 30 times in their career, so the room for error is dismal whilst shoppers are still reaching for the cheapest wines as we speak.

Little do we know that it took four seasons for a grape to look that good, granting me the luxury of having a whole buncha stories to tell in the months to come.

I am happy to share that the first impressions of the 2019 harvest are very promising. After all, these almost ripe bunches have conquered the elements with naked SPF-free skins, keeping it real from bud break in spring to winter dormancy before finally stepping out into the sun as small fragile clusters. It requires a whole different beauty regime altogether to look this healthy and good, every step playing a vital role in the development of its personality.

It’s here where we need to take our hats off to viticulturists (or epicurists should I say) whose footsteps trailed the vineyards like a hungry caracal to inspect the grapes for those unwanted climate-freckles. Harvest time is almost like announcing this commitment when the reigns are transferred to the winemaker’s hands which will couch these grapes into becoming wine.

Albeit the quality of the first grapes that came in for the making of method cap classique, seems very promising, March will probably have the final say as to whether 2019 will have the potential of producing some beauty queens. With elegant sauvignon blanc and shiraz contenders putting their best foot forward in the cooler regions, pinotage and chenin blanc might be upping the ante with their more voluptuous Mediterranean looks in the equally sought after warmer regions.

But it is still fair game at this stage with the prospects of rain or vigorous sunshine that can still easily chase all these beauties into one corner to fight it out for the title. That being said – it’s a tough game for grapes out there. So next time when you reach for that bottle, remember that it took a helluva lot of money to look this good.

1. The difference between RGB and CMYK - If you are designing yourself, set your software to CMYK when printing your designs. The system that your computer software uses for generating colour on screen is not the same system that printers use. Computer graphics use the RGB colour system, which is made up of red, green and blue. But printers work with the cyan, magenta, yellow and black colour set – commonly referred to as CMYK. The RGB system has a greater range of colours than most printers can reproduce. If your designs are intended for digital only, you need your software set to RGB. If it’s for print, you must use CMYK. However, even working in CMYK, what you see on the screen won’t always be exactly what you’ll see on the printed product. That’s why proofing your designs is so important.

2. The importance of resolution - 300 DPI is the standard setting to ensure a high-quality print. When you’re working on the web, resolution isn’t such an issue.

But when it comes to printing, you’re going to need some very high-resolution files indeed, or your prints will come back blurry, muddy and incoherent. The best practice is to set your software to the maximum DPI of 300.

3. How your design scales - Will your images become blurry when printed at large sizes? When you look at your design on the screen, it may look perfect. But if it’s going to be printed at a much bigger size (such as a poster or billboard) or a dramatically smaller one (such as a business card), you need to consider how well the different elements of your design will scale.

4. The need for bleed - Ask your printer how much bleed you need to incorporate in your designs.

The way a printer cuts the paper down is not an exact science, so designers have always left a little room around the edge of their designs as room for error. This is called bleed, and all good design software will include guides to show you where the bleed starts and finishes. Different printers will require different amounts of bleed, so you should always ask your printing company to tell you this.

5. The importance of proofreading - Check everything thoroughly before sending your work to print. This sounds like obvious advice, but it cannot be stressed enough: one of the biggest pitfalls of printing your designs in physical form is making silly mistakes. Because unlike the web, you can’t go back to correct it. If it’s wrong, you’ve simply wasted your money.

ANDREA BOCELLI HAS CONFIRMED TWO SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR DATES IN 2019 Crossover superstar Josh Groban and classical soprano Aida Garifullina also duet with Bocelli on the record. It is his first album of new material in 14 years – 16 brand new songs which celebrate love, family, faith and hope.

At the centre of the new record is a spine-tingling duet between father-and-son, as 20 year old Matteo Bocelli steps into the limelight to duet with Andrea on ‘Fall On Me’ – a beautifully poignant song which reflects the bond between parent and child. Andrea explains how his voice compares with Matteo’s: “Technically they are very different, but there is one thing that makes them most similar: the attitude. One of the world’s biggest classical stars Andrea Bocelli has confirmed two South African tour dates in 2019: The Ticketpro Dome will feature Andrea Bocelli on 18 April 2019 in Johannesburg, while the Cape Town show will be held at Val de Vie Estate in Paarl on 22 April 2019.

GET REVVED UP FOR ANOTHER SPECTACULAR CAPE TOWN MOTOR SHOW The Cape Town Motor Show (CTMS) is set to wow the crowds again at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World from 2-3 March 2019. This stage will then be closed on Friday by The Robfather, and Saturday by Up the Creek`s very own, infamous DJ Dirtroad. Considering requests and feedback, The Food Court will now also have a fully operational bar open all day and night.

KILLER HIT MUSICAL CHICAGO RETURNS TO RAZZLE DAZZLE SA AGAIN! A nightclub singer, a double-murderess, a smooth-talking lawyer and a cell block of sin surrounded by the razzle dazzle of the world’s sexiest musical soon returns to the stage in Cape Town and Johannesburg!

The multi-talented all-South African touring cast, band and crew began rehearsals in Johannesburg in August 2018 ahead of an international year-long tour that began in New Zealand.

First stop was Auckland, followed by Wellington where audiences were dazzled and critics raved.

The company returns to South Africa later this month ahead of the South African leg of the tour in association with BBC First.

CHICAGO will start showing at Artscape, Cape Town from 15 March until 14 April 2019, thereafter heading to Montecasino’s Teatro in Johannesburg. After the South African season the SA International company will be touring Europe.

Long may the standing ovations continue across continents as these musical ambassadors continue to proudly fly the South African flag high.

From the opening line to curtain close - there’s nothing like CHICAGO on stage. Originally staged in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2005 and again, owing to popular demand, in 2008 at Montecasino’s Teatro and Artscape, this show has been enjoyed by more than 210,000 theatre-goers.

It’s no surprise that this devilishly delicious musical has brought cheering audiences to their feet all around the world, from Australia to Argentina, from Spain to South Africa.

An estimated 31 million people have seen CHICAGO, which has played over 32,500 performances worldwide.

CHICAGO was first created by the legendary Broadway trio of John Kander (music), Fred Ebb (book/lyrics) and Bob Fosse (co-author, original director and choreographer) in 1975, and was based on a 1926 Broadway play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, a journalist from the Chicago Tribune who had covered the sensational trials of two women, both of whom were accused of killing their lovers whilst under the influence of drink and jazz.

Kander and Ebb enjoyed a collaboration that spanned four decades, defined musical theatre on Broadway and earned them numerous awards.

Bob Fosse was one of Broadway’s biggest and brightest creative stars, renowned for his innovative and spectacular staging, with the emphasis on exhilarating dance sequences.

He turned out one hit after another from the 1950s to the late 70s and is the only director so far to have won an Oscar, two Tony Awards and an Emmy Award in the same year, 1973.

In November 1996 a revival of CHICAGO opened on Broadway produced by Barry & Fran Weissler, and a year later they opened the show in London’s West End. The rest, as they say, is history, as CHICAGO is currently playing its 22nd year in New York where it holds the record as the longest-running musical revival and the second longest-running musical in Broadway history.

In the West End, CHICAGO ran for 15 years where it also became the longest-running musical revival as well as the longest-running Broadway musical to play there, and recently returned to London in March of this year; currently playing at the Phoenix Theatre. The show’s global success has reached over 36 countries and has been translated into 11 different languages.

CHICAGO continues to be one of the most successful international musical hits of all time.
