From Cradle of Humankind to Cradle of Human Culture

While the dawn of humankind was incepted in the limestone caves of Northern Gauteng, the story continued and grew into the Western Cape. “The ability to package the incredible offering we have around early culture and how its transpired into modern day in the Western Cape, with a globally renowned landmark such as the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (WHS), is

an opportunity to position the destination globally and attract more visitors,” said Wesgro’s Chief Marketing Officer for Tourism, Judy Lain. “The connection between the Cradle of Humankind WHS and the Cradle of Human Culture is a connecting thread between our physical being and our aesthetic being,” said Michael Worsnip, Managing Director of Maropen.

Offshore Gas Find To Boost Garden Route Property Markets

While it is still early days, the exciting news around the Total gas find off the coast of Mossel Bay is set to be a major boost for the Garden Route property markets according to Seeff’s licensees. Stephen Larkin, an expert in Southern Africa oil and gas exploration and CEO of Africa New Energies has said that the discovery, which could hold 1-billion barrels of gas-condensate, will bring at least R1-trillion to the SA economy over the next 20 years. He said further that Southern Africa had become the hottest destination for hydrocarbon exploration in the world and the economic benefits of this catalytic find could be significant.

For the Garden Route, this would bring huge opportunity and skills programs to assist with upliftment which will job opportunities that will require housing and infrastructure to assist with the demand, says Pieter Jordaan, principal of Seeff George. Early bird investors will reap the benefits of an already fast-growing area. The pre-planning stage is more important than anything else, he says. This will include infrastructure, sewerage plants, land for housing and commercial activities, schools, hospitals and most of all water availability. George is seen as an excellent alternative to Cape Town for semigrating buyers for a number of reasons including value for money, security and the laid-back lifestyle. George offers a diverse and well developed property market that caters for every buyer demographic and price range, he says further. Older sectional title property can for example still be found from around R650,000 and houses from around R900,000, but there are plenty of modern developments and estates where you can find stunning family and golf estate houses, generally in the R2m-R6m range to about R8m for a sea view property. George also has a busy rental market with tenants needing accommodation across a broad spectrum, from apartments and townhouses to luxury homes in estates where landlords can achieve rental returns of up to R20,000-R30,000/ month. There is no doubt that the gas project will further boost this market, he says. Kaaiman Schutte, principal for the Mossel Bay area says that Seeff has already seen year-on-year sales growth of 20% with January 2019, the best sales month in four years. The Total gas condensate find is indeed good news for the local economy and for real estate, he says. The potential boost to Petro SA and the local economy will stimulate an even bigger demand for rental housing and also attract more buyers to the property market.

Wesgro’s Destination Marketing Unit in partnership with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT), the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and the Cradle of Humankind WHS, is set to officially launch the Cradle of Human Culture route in April 2019. To launch the Cradle of Human Culture a micro-site will be developed detailing information on the experience. To support in marketing the initiative a short video, imagery and a booklet will be shared on social media channels and other digital platforms. of modern human behaviour and for this reason they are in the process of being nominated for World Heritage Site status. Boasting ornately decorated ostrich eggs, marine shell beads, engraved ochre, bone tools and finely made bifacial points are just some of the archaeological treasures found at these sites, which display complex task processing and development of symbolic systems. As the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) nomination mentions, these sites hold an “unmatched record of palaeoenvironmental and human history in an important phase of human evolution, the development of anatomically modern humans”. Not limited to the fore mentioned sites, the dawn of human culture stretches across all six regions of the province with sites such as the West Coast Fossil Park - home to one of the world’s richest concentration of fossils dating back 5-million years - taking us into the past. Museums such as the Zeitz MOCAA, with its incredible collection of contemporary art, add a new dynamic by giving us a glimpse of the present and the not-too distant future.

SWAPPING SUBURBIA FOR LIFE ON A SAILBOAT Travelling and living in different countries has taught me that we can get by with much less than we think. Adventure is always worth the challenge. Some challenges are so daunting to most people that for those who dare take the chance, it is uncharted and therefor incredibly exciting and rewarding. Most importantly change is never as scary as it seems. Humans are far more adaptable than we give ourselves credit for. This is why we find ourselves living permanently on our sailboat, Pluto. We are equipped with a gimbal gas oven with two stove top burners, an 84litre camping style fridge/freezer, ample space for provisioning, including netting hanging from the ceiling for fruit and vegetables. Our two cabins can accommodate 4 people easily (twin size beds in each), a shower/toilet (called head in nautical terms) and a saloon (dining area) complete with collapsible table that seat about 6 people fairly comfortably. We move around Pluto with ease and the smaller space also means less stuff to clean, less belongings to worry over and less clutter in our heads. The aft-deck gives us easy access to the water for a snorkel or a swim and the cockpit is well protected from wind and water and have seen many dinners and unplanned parties, including the past New Years’ in Knysna with some family and friends. Photo: Taking ownership of Pluto in 2017

There are a lot of things you have to let go when you sell up and move onto a sailboat. For a start; your 1800-watt hairdryer, high heels and crisp white and perfectly ironed clothes. Your sense of adventure and a great deal of patience and adaptability? Double up on those. So why would someone give up the comforts of suburban bliss in exchange for an ever-moving home exposed to all the elements nature can possibly throw at you and venture off to explore the Indian Ocean Islands on a 36ft sailboat?

We get to shore by means of an inflatable dinghy with an 8hp outboard motor when we are on anchor. When we are sailing, it is packed away on the foredeck along with spare diesel and water supplies. We are mostly self-sufficient, making our own water and electricity from solar and wind. We use local markets to shop and try to practice a more conscious, sustainable life. We explore where we are, when we can, and live by our own rules. My wardrobe is substantially smaller than two years ago; no heels, no washing machine and very little clothes that need ironing, but our horizons? So much wider.

CORPORATE SLAVE TURNED STUNT WOMAN Jumping off buildings, doing fight scenes and being set on fire are all in a day’s work for film industry stunt woman Lana Katz. Thirty-three year old, born and bred Cape Townian (originally from Durbanville, now living in Table View) is not your typical woman. She has a mixture of beauty, strength, passion, and pure athletic talent. She has the potential to help change the ridiculous stereotype that strong, toned woman are unattractive and masculine. When Lana Katz meets somebody new, invariably the conversation focuses solely on what she does for a living. That’s because stunt work for the film industry sounds exciting and dangerous. And that’s why Lana trains twice a day, five days a week; because she needs to be in top physical shape in order to do her job. What is even more interesting about Lana’s job is that she only took up stunt work a few years ago, having previously worked in the advertising industry. However, at the age of 27 she decided to follow a new path. After a divorce in 2013, Lana decided to follow her dream of being a Stunt Performer. Along the way, fitness and healthy living became her life. Lana is constantly training, setting goals and learning new ways in which to push her body - from Crossfit, Weightlifting, Yoga, Surfing to Mixed Martial Arts. She’s always learning new skills and being amazed at what the body can actually achieve. Lana is living proof that it’s never too late to change your life and start something new! “The way I look at it, I train to work and work to train, so I am always looking to increase my skills and ensure my physical fitness. Healthy body = healthy mind,” says Lana. Lana's life revolves around 2 mottos; “Anything is Possible” and “Dreams become Reality”. Winner of Ms Figure & runner up in Miss Bikini at Fitness America 2017 in Las Vegas, she wants to help people realize that it’s never too late to make a change and there’s no such thing as a dream too big. “If you can dream it, you can achieve it!” Lana can be seen on the brand new reality TV show “The Longest Date” Season 1 which is currently airing on SABC3 Monday nights at 19h30. 16 Contestants are paired as 8 couples battle it out for R100 000. While some pairs are perfect, a few mismatches have been thrown in for mischief. The couples spend two weeks in beautiful Mpumalanga taking part in adventure sports challenges during a series of dates. If you think adventure is dangerous, try dating! Does Lana have what it takes to walk away as the ultimate winner? Stay tuned to find out more.

WATERSTONE VILLAGE SHOPPING CENTRE EXPANDING Waterstone Village Shopping Centre in Somerset-West will be extended with a further 1132m² of retail and a raised parking deck above the existing parking area in front of the Virgin Active Gym building. The project started on 4 March and proposed completion date is September 2019. Access to the deck will be taken from two positions, firstly, from the existing slip lane from Main Road and, secondly, from within the existing parking area. The existing parking area will become a “semi-basement”, with the open parking deck above. This will effectively form a podium to the gym building. Additional parking will also be added at the back of the Shopping centre, against the Schonenberg wall. “By adding the deck and parking behind we will be able to provide an additional 150 parking bays which the Local authority insisted on.” Transport planning: Upgrades will be done to Main Road/R44 and the Main Road/ Lobelia Street intersection to help with the flow of traffic. This project is intensive but well overdue. “We will have six months of interruptions but we are doing this to keep Waterstone Village the number one Centre in the Helderberg.”

SOUND WAVES - MEDICINE OF THE FUTURE Example: Heading an article by Robert Mc Kie, Science Editor at “The Guardian”, 31 October 2015: “High power sound waves used to blast cancer cells” confirms that the medical field is starting to appreciate this astounding source of healing. This is just 1 of countless similar findings all over the world.” SOUNDWAVES HEALTH CLINIC on the Gordon’s Bay beachfront uses the most advanced elements of Frequency Therapy. You can have a full body scan and treatment with truly front-line technology.

Charl de Villiers doing what he loves best

Our Foundational Scan examines every system in your body, even your eyes, skin, teeth etc.; search-

FREQUENCIES… Mysterious elements invisible to the eye, yet present in every object – human, animal, plant or rock; body organs, bacteria, viruses…indeed, every single thing that has been created. Today, technology even allows us to hear the beautiful “songs” generated by the vibrations, or frequencies, of the planets and stars resonating through the universe!

ing for the source of your problem; equipping you with information about your own body. That means your treatment starts at the source, not the symptoms, with no meds, no discomfort – just pure relaxation!

Huge scientific strides since mid-20th century have allowed mankind to exploit this phenomenon in numerous arenas – including Frequency Medicine (also known as Bio-resonance/Energy Medicine); thus sparking fresh interest in a natural, noninvasive, non-artificial approach to good health care. How does it work? The answer is based on 1 simple fact: Every single object vibrates at its own unique RESONANT FREQUENCY. The frequencies at which viruses/bacteria etc. can be killed have been mathematically determined many decades ago. This means medical disorders can be treated by pulsing specific frequencies (sound waves) into the body, thus destroying microbes and other pathogens – even tumours, benign or malignant. Consequently, there is now much more hope for healing in a world where viruses/ bacteria are mutating so rapidly that science can’t keep up with developing new antibiotics. Sound waves are not only used for treating physical illness, but even emotional disorders, i.e. depression, anxiety, ADHD and many more. Because of the harmony between body and mind, the one always influences the other. Frequency Therapy can take care of both …without chemical invasion. Can this type of therapy treat cancer? YES! Globally, Frequency Therapy is used effectively in the fight against cancer.

A further great benefit: our scan includes a “pap smear”, “mammogram”, or “prostate check” - ALL done with frequencies; NO bodily invasion. Early detection is especially crucial for successful treatment in case of a life-threatening disease or tumour. For people suffering from arthritis, rheumatism and painful joints, our Low Level (Cold) Laser Therapy and Millimetre Waves can ease your discomfort while we deal with the root of your problem. Our brand new website is waiting for you to explore the fascinating world of Frequency Therapy.

Anne-Marie de Villiers is always ready to assist you

This is true “medicine”: not only of the future, but most assuredly also for the here and now! The articles and information on our website will give you insight into our range of work, and help you understand that there is a better way to good health. “You need sound information to make sound choices!”

Why? Frequencies are able to kill the cancer cell: without radiation/chemotherapy; thus no hair loss, no nausea, no scars from surgery - no side-effects! (This does not preclude life-saving surgery when necessary). In fact, many health professionals and scientists are growing excited about the seemingly inexhaustible ways sound waves are enhancing human (and animal) health!

DRINK

Indlovu Gin – made in Africa, designed by elephants Translated from several African languages, ‘Indlovu’ means elephant. Whilst sipping on her G&T on safari in Kenya, watching a herd of elephants quietly grazing, Paula recalls the game ranger telling them about the elephants’ foraging habits. Although elephants graze constantly throughout the day only a small percentage of what they consume is actually digested. This led to Paula’s lightbulb moment of researching and eventually creating an elephant dung-based gin, together with her ‘partner in crime’, husband Les. Elephant dung is known to be brewed as a tea in Africa, as well as being used in traditional medicine for its remarkable healing properties. These medicinal qualities have been ascribed to the large variety of fruit and plants that an elephant consumes throughout the day. That same Savannah vegetation gives the Indlovu Gin its uniquely wooded, earthy flavours. The gin is a crystal clear golden colour, with aromas of Juniper, citrus, grassy and an element of earthiness. A world first - this handcrafted, juniper led twice infused, distilled gin is made from elephant dung. Borne out of a ‘what if’ moment by ‘Ginnovators’ Dr Les Ansley and Professor Paula Ansley, whilst on a family safari, has resulted in something so unique you can’t help wanting to discover more. In an increasingly crowded market, the key differentiator is that the botanicals used in the gin are selectively foraged by elephants, then extracted and cleansed from their dung for infusion. Under the guidance of leading ‘Gin Master’, Roger Jorgenson, the Ansleys created Indlovu Gin – an innovative gin that incorporates the foraging habits of the world’s largest land animal.

On the palate are a blend of flavours such as Juniper, Angelica, citrus with earthy undertones and spice from the elephants’ favourite foraged botanicals. “A sip of our gin will transport you to sundowners in the tranquillity of the African bush,” says Les. As Les and Paula are passionate about wildlife and biodiversity, it became important to them that the brand underpins a strong conservation message. Therefore, 15% of the profits from the sale of the gin will be donated to the Africa Foundation to support their work in conservation through the Phinda Wildlife Project. Benguela Cove launches new bespoke wines Treasure Benguela on 6 April 2019 sees the launch of Benguela Cove’s limited release wines – Vinography and Catalina. But where did the idea for these wines start? Winemaker Johann Fourie thought about naming his small batch wines like any dad would ponder about the name of his first born. Not that this would be the first time he pushes the boundaries, but it would be the first time that Benguela Cove would highlight vineyards with a trajectory of consistent quality. “Benguela Cove wines communicate a ‘somewhereness’ - that innate quality that exudes destination, telling you where this wine is from,” says Fourie. Those who followed Benguela Cove growing up as a brand, would’ve noticed a few changes along the way, moving away from black and gold to echo its home with sandy and deep ocean blue colours. It has been well received as a sophisticated identity true to the message of fine wines produced from a cool wine region. “Winemaking is an ongoing process. One can never become complacent and always need to investigate the road less travelled and try new things outside your comfort zone. This is what Vinography is all about.” Vinography serves as a diary of both winemaker and nature. If one can tear a page from their winemaking book on a day they strayed from the textbook, this is what it would look like. It represents everything that became instrumental in completing a wine – from vineyard to cellar. The SA Platter’s Five Star Winner, Benguela Cove Catalina Semillon represents exceptional quality and longevity while honouring the history that etched the land on which Benguela Cove is built today. The lagoon that borders the estate was used as a base during WW2 for Catalina flying boats. Of the fourteen soldiers stationed at the base, three returned to marry South African women. “Catalina is not driven by experiments like we try to achieve with Vinography. This is rather a consistent approach to reward a vineyard that always produces quality. It is produced from a single vineyard that has been a champion at the SA Young wine show for consecutive years.”

@TheWineSamarie - I say Syrah, you say Shiraz It is the charm of both styles that makes this a challenging category to judge, but all the more reason for the judges to be thoroughly prepared to navigate themselves through the wines and to put themselves in the winemakers shoe with every wine that passes their nose. What makes it quintessentially cool climate? What are those luscious attributes you get from a warmer region? And where lay those subtleties (captured through excellent winemaking) that highlight the best of both worlds? This is why Shiraz SA introduced its new slogan: I say Syrah, you say Shiraz. The organisation was created as a platform for producers to share knowledge and at the same time create a stronger consumer awareness. This includes an annual technical workshop for industry members to discuss trends and the latest technology.

South Africans love Shiraz – so much so it is worth having an annual competition to identify the best of the best. This competition also “spills” some light on the array of styles made in South Africa. Syrah and Shiraz is made from the same grape albeit there are certain stylistic differences that distinguish the two. The French made it famous as Syrah in the Rhone valley – more reserved in style with its delicious fruit core hemmed with a savoury note and familiar spicy edge that adds a delicate perfume. The Australians are famous for their Shiraz – more robust and fruit-forward in style that exudes a typical ripeness that its followers love. It doesn’t mean that either of these styles is exclusive to one country and South Africa has proven that both can be mastered in our diverse southern “terroir-tories”.

The judging for the SA Shiraz Challenge commence on 9 April where single cultivars as well as blends from different regions will be judged. The outcome will be 12 distinctive examples that capture the essence of this grape in South Africa. The 2019 panel consist of Dr Andy Roediger (Cape Wine Master) as chairman, Charles Hopkins (cellar master De Grendel), Edmund Terblanche (cellar master La Motte, Chairman Shiraz SA) Samarie Smith (wine writer, brand manager at Benguela Cove) Claus Fischer (International Judge Germany, Mundus Vini), Jeanne-Mari de Villiers (consultant, owner VinJeanne), Elsie Pells (Cape Wine Master) and Morgan Steyn, a Cape Wine Guild Protégé and 8th judge. Producers who are game to take full advantage of the approaching winter will take part in the annual Seven Days of Shiraz and Venison – celebrated between 10 and 16 June. With more than 700 shiraz of syrah wines to choose from, this event is supported by more than 30 producers, each curating their own program to pair their style of wine with a quintessential South African dish. Every producer will have the freedom to celebrate this the way they see fit. Menus will see various expressions of venison whether it be Springbok shanks, a kudu rump or slow braised meat used in arancini or a hearty ragout. For more information visit www.shirazsa.co.za

HOTEL

SPIER’S SECRET SEASON PHOTOGRAPHER EMMA-JANE ON CAPTURING THE WONDER OF SPIER’S SECRET SEASON

escape to the farm with spier’s new winter package

Winter is Spier’s secret season — a time for slowing down. Hibernate by the fire in your cosy hotel room. Watch the oak leaves fall on the Werf. Enjoy lungfuls of crisp, clean air as you stroll by the river or cycle through pastures. Feast on farmto-table food matched with beautiful wines. Make the most of the season with Spier’s Winter package — an incredible value getaway aimed at recharging and rejuvenating even the most stressed of city slickers.

As I arrive at Spier, the Helderberg mountains are aglow with the early morning’s sunlight. I pull into the empty parking lot and breathe in the calm before the day starts. Outside, the air is crisp and earthy. About Emma-Jane Emma-Jane is a Cape Town based photographer, and occasional blogger on Emmajanenation, which she started in 2008. After finishing a design degree eight years ago, Emma-Jane briefly dipped her toe in the advertising world before pursuing a full-time career in photography. She enjoys a cold glass of bubbly and weekends away in the mountains. Her dream is to open her own fine art photography print shop this year.

AS I WALK ACROSS THE WERF’S GLITTERING GRASS, I CRUNCH ON THE LEAVES THAT HAVE FALLEN FROM STATELY OLD OAKS. The day starts at the Farm Kitchen with a flat white from the friendly barista, and a quick hello to the ladies behind the deli counter, as they set down the still-warm bread from Vadas and start prepping the day’s salads.

Coffee done, we head out to seek stories — each fresh yet so steeped in history. As the sun flirts with the gathering clouds, we dance among the gold-leafed vines and ride bikes past sculptures and 300-year-old buildings. We rest with a glass of Signature Cabernet Sauvignon by the Hotel bar’s roaring fire. We stop at Eight for food photographs featuring the season’s bounty, feasting on farm fresh butters and wholesome, hearty flavours. I leave Spier with tired legs, a full memory card and belly, and the biggest smile. No matter the season, each shoot I’ve done at Spier over the last three years has been an adventure — always involving delicious food and wine served with the warmth and friendliness I consider hallmarks.

The package includes: • Wholesome breakfasts at the hotel, crafted by our chefs • Lunch at Eight – Spier’s renowned farm-to-table restaurant • A Signature wine-tasting at the Tasting Room • A pampering treatment at the Spier Spa • Two nights in a Signature Room at Spier Hotel • During your free time, explore the farm on foot, by bike or Segway — or read a book by the fire! The Spier Winter package costs just R1 720 per person sharing per night (for a 2-night stay) and is valid until 31 September 2019.

and vegans. All the vegetables he uses are grown organically in Spier’s food gardens or close by. Surplus veggies are fermented or pickled to use in future dishes, ensuring as little food waste as possible.

Vadas’s collaboration with Spier is central to achieving this. Farmer Angus supplies all our beef, pork, chicken and eggs. “Although it’s the fashion to be sustainable and organic, at Spier we really do achieve that” says PJ Vadas, Vadas’s owner and executive chef. The restaurant works closely with the butchery on Spier farm and allows for a ‘farm-to-butchery-to-table’ experience. This enables the chefs to work with the whole animal, from noseto-tail.

Guests are also treated to scrumptious seafood. Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery was one of the first supporters of Abalobi – an initiative enabling small-scale fishers the ability to track environmental events that affect their fishing as well as maritime, safety, local development market opportunities.

Although meats are a large focus, Chef PJ Vadas is increasingly known for his innovative and modern vegetarian dishes and has a loyal following of both vegetarians

Abalobi has replaced the middle-man between the chef and the fisherman. Chef PJ receives a daily alert as to what fish is being caught, and places and receives his order within a few hours. Vadas’ fish of the day is determined by whatever is available through Abalobi that morning, and is always served fresh.

pizza nights

Each Friday night at Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery is pizza night. Served from 18.00 until close, these are no ordinary pizzas. The pizza bases are sourdough — made with stoneground flour and fermented for 48 hours. Buffalo mozzarella is sourced from Buffalo Ridge, the only water buffalo dairy in South Africa and the country’s only producer of buffalo mozzarella. All meat products used are from Farmer Angus, raised on Spier Wine Farm. You can choose from five different pizzas such as The Fat Butcher (bianco base with creamed leaks, salsa verde, bone marrow, thyme and smoked cheddar) or The Porky (a tomato base with buffalo mozzarella, Farmer Angus bacon, avo and feta). Your pizza can be paired with a selection of Spier wines including the Farm House Organic Chenin Blanc, Rosé or Straw Wine.

RECIPE

ARTFUL PAIRING PAN-FRIED SALMON WITH DILL BUTTER SAUCE ON CAULIFLOWER PUREE

Fresh salmon (or rainbow trout, as a substitute) is a royal treat and it is so very easy to prepare. The cream cauliflower puree is super tasty, carb-free and much more elegant than regular mashed potatoes — the perfect dinner party main course when paired with Creative Block 2.

To plate:

Spoon some warm cauli puree on a plate, then top with a piece of cooked salmon. Spoon some of the sauce over the top and scatter with more fresh dill.

(Serves 4. Prep/cooking time: 30 minutes.)

Serve immediately with a glass of Spier Creative Block 2.

Ingredients

About the wine: Creative Block 2

FOR THE CAULIFLOWER PUREE:

This Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon offers aromas of gooseberries, limes and white peaches, with underlying notes of fynbos and a touch of white asparagus delivering serious depth. The palate is young and tropical, leading to a long, mineral tail that is tight and structured.

• 1 large head of cauliflower, cut into florets • 1 cup (250 ml) fresh cream • 1/2 teaspoon (2,5 ml) salt • a grinding of black pepper FOR THE DILL BUTTER SAUCE:

• 125 g butter, melted • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh dill, finely chopped (plus more for serving) • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) honey • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) fresh lemon juice (plus a few lemon wedges for serving) • salt & pepper

From R110. Available from leading supermarkets, or online from www.spier.co.za.

FOR THE FISH:

• 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) butter • 600-800 g fresh salmon / trout steak, cut into 4 portions • salt & pepper Method

Place the cauliflower, cream and salt in a medium size pot and bring to a boil. Simmer over low heat, covered with a lid, for about 10-15 minutes or until tender. Place the cooked cauliflower and cream in a food processor and process to a smooth puree (or use a stick blender). Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary, also adding black pepper if needed. Set aside. Mix the melted butter, dill, honey and lemon juice in a small jug, then season with salt & pepper and stir well. Set aside (can be reheated in the microwave oven if the butter starts to set). Heat the olive oil and butter in a large non-stick pan, then fry the fish skin-side down over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes depending on the thickness of the steaks. Season with salt & pepper. Turn the steaks over carefully, then cover with a lid and remove from the heat to steam for about 2 minutes. The fish should still be slightly pink in the centre.

ART

THE ART OF WATER CELEBRATING THIS LIFE-GIVING FORCE

The wall outside the Spier Artisan Studio is now home to a new mural by acclaimed artist Liza Grobler. Made with mixed materials, JUST ADD WATER depicts Spier’s historic and ecological setting. The Eerste River which flows through Spier is represented as a vivid blue line that form the artwork’s spine. Its prominence highlights the importance of this river to the farm and its surroundings, emphasising the importance of water as a means of life-giving nourishment and connection. The drawing is executed in monochrome with details in smalti (glass mosaic) which pay homage to the artisan studio within the building. Hand-painted ceramic tiles capture intimate corners of Spier’s historic farmyard — the Werf, while porcelain cones provide a habitat for indigenous plants that will grow around the “river”. Currently containing succelents, these cones will in the future feature South African plants sourced from Tree-preneurs, a Spier Growing for Good Learning Initiative which teaches members of impoverished communities how to care for indigenous plants. Liza was a participant of the Spier Artists Patronage Programme, in which we offer support over an extended period (of four to five years) to artists we consider to be exceptional and who we believe will benefit significantly from the freedom provided by a supportive patron.

Liza’s work — which has been exhibited extensively both at home and abroad — blurs the traditions of craft and fine art, and breathes new life into discarded, massproduced materials through traditional craft techniques like crochet, beading and weaving. Her work explores the tangible qualities of materials and the connections between people, artworks and the world around us; her installations creating dialogues with the spaces in which they are displayed. The viewer is encouraged to travel with her into an imaginary world where fact and fiction become one, everything is in flux, and anything is possible. In addition to JUST ADD WATER, there are numerous works by Liza showcased across Spier. In 2015, she also curated, Decor-Z — an exhibition in the Spier Farm Kitchen featuring her own work along with five other leading South African artists.

After approximately 12 hours without fuel, it’s easy to see why it’s called the most important meal of the day – providing the energy your body needs to get you going in the morning.

Power your brain - Improved mental performance, concentration and mood – three more reasons to enjoy a morning meal! Without breakfast, you may struggle to focus and are more likely to be irritable and tired. Breakfast helps to top up the energy stores that your body has used overnight to repair and renew. Vitamins and minerals also contribute to the reduction of fatigue.

Fuel your body - Kick-start your day with essential nutrients! As well as providing energy (calories), a healthy breakfast can give you the nutritional boost your body needs, including fibre, vitamins and minerals.

The F1 shake is available in 9 delicious flavours: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry Tropical, Banana Cream, Cookies & Cream, Cappuccino, Raspberry & Blueberry, Toffee Apple & Cinnamon, Mint Chocolate Crunch and F1 Free From Vanilla.

Take control of your weight - Skipping or eating a breakfast that lacks essential nutrients can make you more likely to reach for unhealthy, high-calorie foods later on. In fact, research shows that individuals who consume a good quality breakfast tend to have a healthier daily food pattern than those who don’t.

Enjoy them alone or get creative and blend with fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. F1 is a delicious shake mix that provides protein and key nutrients. A convenient choice for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Build and maintain muscle - Protein contributes to the maintenance and growth of muscle mass, and our bodies rely on the protein in our diet to help us do this. Healthy skin - Beautiful skin starts with nourishment from within. Drinking water and enjoying a healthy breakfast will feed your skin with essential nutrients. Boost your metabolism - Eating a healthy morning meal and smaller portions more often throughout the day will help balance your energy and enable your body to perform at its best.

?

Great-tasting and kilojoule-controlled with on average 924 kilojoules per serving plus fibre, vitamins and minerals. High in protein from soy and dairy, around 18 g of protein when prepared with semi-skimmed milk. Underpinned by science and developed by experts in nutrition. F1 Raspberry & Blueberry is suitable for vegetarians, artificial sweetener and colourant free, and contains 23 essential vitamins and minerals. F1 Free From Vanilla is free from lactose, soy and gluten when made according to directions.

DECOREX CAPE TOWN REVEALS TRENDS TO LIGHT UP ANY SPACE When it comes to interior design, the final element that ties the room together - while enhancing the standout décor pieces - is lighting. The intricacies of this particular interior design item will be beautifully showcased by lighting experts, Fundi Light & Living at the 2019 Decorex Cape Town taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 1-5 May 2019. “Over the past few years, we’ve enjoyed watching the emergence of lighting as a dominant design feature, rather than an afterthought,” said Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Reed Exhibitions. “The product variations, styles and materials available nowadays offer the perfect lighting solution for every interior and exterior space. We are thrilled to welcome Fundi Light & Living – leaders in this industry – to feature at the latest Decorex Cape Town installation, The Lighting Project.” Cathy Newton, Managing Director of Wire World – exclusive manufacturers and distributors of Fundi Light & Living - explained that the choice of lighting can completely transform the mood of any space: “To achieve the proper atmosphere, you need to first understand the different types of light and how they interact with each other. Ambient, functional and accent lighting all need to be considered when the function of the room is determined.” She said the incorrect lighting method could have disastrous effects on the overall feel: “A restaurant owner would not put harsh fluorescent lighting above his dining area tables, nor would a business owner put dark ambient lighting in his office area.”Fundi Light & Living share the top 3 lighting trends for 2019: Artisanal Lighting, Minimalism and Sustainability. Get to Decorex Cape Town where Fundi Light & Living will showcase a trendy selection of table lamps, floor lamps and pendants in The Lighting Project. Expect inspired lighting solutions such as woven lights in resin and recycled t-shirt yarn; contemporary lampstands in birch ply and sustainable oak; and lighting selections in wire, covered in a variety of fabrications – all of which are proudly South African made. In addition to The Lighting Project, Decorex Cape Town will feature: Decorex Urban Living Trend House with Sevens, InStudio Trend Theatre by ABSA, Children’s Playroom & Décor Project, The Trend Kitchen, Kitchen Design Project by the Studio Collection, The Bathroom Project, The Designer Project, Decorex International, Gourmet Cooking Theatre, Wine & Bubbly Bar furnished by Homewood, The Gin & Rum Garden and Design & Dine Restaurant + Bar.

7 reasons to get permanent residency in Europe Securing permanent residency in another country is very desirable as it allows the bearer of that residency permit the legal right to live indefinitely in that country, despite not being a citizen. A residency permit is a sought-after Plan B because it is effectively an insurance policy to be able to relocate to that country at any time without a visa required; and without having to go through the normal onerous immigration processes and procedures. Cyprus, an English-speaking ex-British colony, full EU member and not part of Greece, currently has THE BEST permanent residency programme available in Europe. The programme is an investment in real estate; and with Cyprus’ positive property growth, demand for long and short-term tenants, this offers a very attractive investment for the short, medium and long term.

Here are the 7 reasons why South Africans desire Cypriot permanent residency: 1. Permanent residency is secured in 6 – 8 weeks of making application. 2. It’s the only programme in Europe where 3 generations in the same family line ALL secure permanent residency on the same application. 3. The programme includes all dependent children up to age 25; as well as both the parents as well as the parents-in-law. 4. The permanent residency permits are FOR LIFE for everyone and they automatically renew. 5. You can rent the property out for short-term holiday market or the long term lets, thereby earning an attractive Euro-based income. 6. You only need to visit Cyprus 1 day every 2nd year for the residency permits to remain valid. 7. There is no inheritance tax so on your death you can dispose of your assets to your loved ones without having to pay the Cypriot government any death duty. This is very advantageous for legacy planning. Protect yourself, your family and your assets from unpredicted events by taking advantage of the opportunity to secure permanent residency in Cyprus. Think of getting dual citizenship as guaranteeing your family’s future. An astute offshore property investment that works for you in the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime. In Cyprus investing in the Fast Track residency programme not only makes financial sense, but it will tangibly benefit your immediate family. Can you afford not to take advantage of this while the programme is still open? Cypriot Realty is a pioneer in actively and consistently promoting property opportunities primarily in Cyprus. They have successful been doing this from their Cape Town and Sandton offices since 2008. As a result, the company is recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative investment specialist for promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for acquiring permanent residency/citizenship, property investment, immigration/ retirement and starting a European-based business.

A New Era For Elgin Grabouw Tourism

2019 started on a prosperous note for the Elgin Grabouw Valley, with exciting developments that have paved the way for the relaunch of tourism. As at 30 June 2018, Elgin Valley Tourism closed, however, Wines of Elgin recognised the vital role tourism plays for the Valley and led the decision of a relaunch. Wines of Elgin is recognised internationally for its highly acclaimed and award-winning cool climate wines, and as such welcomes the opportunity of taking the Elgin Grabouw Valley Tourism to the attention of local and international visitors.

Ensuring a hands-on involvement of members representing the relevant sectors in the valley, the newly established tourism body will be represented by the following committee members: Marion Smith (Chairperson and co-owner of Elgin Ridge Wines), Nicky Wallace (Paul Wallace Wines), Liesl Cluver Rust (Paul Cluver Wines), Nick King (South Hill Wines), Roger Orpen (Elgin Railway Market), Pieter Silberbauer (Trails End) and Alfra Cox, assisted by Edward Cloete (representing Theewaterskloof Municipality). The committee will be supported by a full time Executive Head of Tourism, Catherine Boome, who resides in Elgin on a family apple and pear farm. Mariaan Meyer manages the administrative tasks.

The new structure and name encompasses the entire Elgin and Grabouw community, offering a broader scope of information for local and international tourists. These include all sectors, namely wines, the new Elgin Railway Market, outdoor adventure activities, restaurants, accommodation facilities - that range from authentic farm experiences, mountain bike hotels to glamping – as well as the traditional farmstalls that feature as an integral part of most passing travellers’ journey. The Valley sits within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, a 100,000 hectare UNESCO designated home to the most complex biodiversity on our planet with more than 1,880 different plant species. The valley is approximately 70km from Cape Town, and is internationally recognised for its cool-climate wines and warm hospitality. World-class eateries, accommodation and outdoor activities which add extra appeal to visitors. The region rewards visitors taking a meandering trip off the beaten track to #experienceelgin in all its beauty. There are plans in place for an on-site office, but for the interim the committee feel it would be the ideal opportunity to put their innovative ideas to the test. IMPI CHALLENGE EQUATES TO THE PERFECT TEAM BUILDING EXPERIENCE “The obstacles challenge teams to focus and help each other. We always have a good laugh for weeks after the event.” The team from Travelstart entered the IMPI Challenge for various reasons including: team building, health, fitness and having fun with work colleagues. “The IMPI Challenge is awesome, fun and challenging,” says Royden Michael Scholtz. “Not only do you help your team members to complete the obstacles, you also offer assistance to other teams or passers-by. After the event you get to relax in the Festival Village while chatting to colleagues who aren’t necessarily in your department. It’s a professional event, an awesome social experience, makes you aware of where you are from a fitness point of view and the obstacles are awesome.”

The IMPI Challenge is the perfect event for corporate organisations that are looking for a fun way to promote team building.

For Massimiliano Mosca, Rialto Foods, the IMPI Challenge is a challenging, but fun experience. “We had so much fun at the IMPI Challenge in 2018, that we’ve doubled the number of entries this year,” says Mosca. We can’t wait for our first IMPI Challenge experience of 2019.”

According to Karla Steyl from La Montanara, the company entered the IMPI Challenge to enjoy the event as a team. “We really enjoyed the event,” said Steyl. “The IMPI Challenge is a great team building exercise. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. As a result we could help each other at different stages. I would definitely recommend this event to other corporate companies.”

“The IMPI Challenge is a great team building outing,” says Khakhi Diala, Spur Group. “It’s challenging, fun and fantastic to partake in. Our team actually trains together leading up to the event. Completing the challenge is a huge achievement and it feels great to be part of a team. I wasn’t fully prepared for the last IMPI Challenge. I still enjoyed it though, but will definitely be better prepared next time”.
