With the richest temperate flora in the world and a myriad of rare, critically endangered species, Gondwana Game Reserve, on the Garden Route is a bucket list destination not just for a Big 5 safari, but also for anyone with an interest in botany and biodiversity to explore indigenous wild flowers and plants that exist nowhere else in the world. Gondwana recently launched a Fynbos Conservation Experience which includes a guided nature walk accompanied by their resident botanist. Among the 1000 plant-, 118 bird-, 29 mammal- and 21 amphibian species coexisting in this 11,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, participants are bound to uncover fascinating stories as they help monitor and map the types found on the game reserve. The new hands-on experience will give guests a chance to learn about the conservation of the rare and endangered Fynbos biome, affording them the opportunity to get a more up-close understanding of the stunning indigenous flora and fauna.
The activity takes 2-3 hours and is offered daily in the downtime between morning and evening game drives. Participants will assist experts in their research conducted in different monitoring zones throughout the reserve, learning identification, monitoring parameters and geo-mapping of the thousands of Fynbos plant species found on the reserve. The collected data is vital in understanding and recording this vanishing and isolated floral kingdom that only exists along the Cape coastal belt of South Africa. Guests will see amazing plants in bloom throughout the year, including the famous King Protea and many endemic species of birds, insects and antelope. “This new experience is a complete natural progression for Gondwana. The growing popularity of our Eco Camp Conservation program has confirmed that guests love getting a behind-the-scenes view of the conservation efforts on the Reserve. Continue Reading Page 3

From Cradle of Humankind to Cradle of Human Culture
While the dawn of humankind was incepted in the limestone caves of Northern Gauteng, the story continued and grew into the Western Cape. “The ability to package the incredible offering we have around early culture and how its transpired into modern day in the Western Cape, with a globally renowned landmark such as the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (WHS), is
an opportunity to position the destination globally and attract more visitors,” said Wesgro’s Chief Marketing Officer for Tourism, Judy Lain. “The connection between the Cradle of Humankind WHS and the Cradle of Human Culture is a connecting thread between our physical being and our aesthetic being,” said Michael Worsnip, Managing Director of Maropen.

The vessel’s Commanding Officer, Captain Ludovic Poitou said they were conducting operations under Operation Atalanta when France answered Mozambique’s request for international help and assistance arising from the devastation brought about by Cyclone Idai in mid-March. On 22 March a French Air Force C-160 Transall made the first airlift of emergency humanitarian logistical equipment (tents, generators, lighting kits, tools, etc.) between Reunion and Beira.

The task group left Operation Atalanta a few days earlier than planned and went to the island of Mayotte (a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique) and picked up humanitarian aid from the International Red Cross and then departed Mayotte on 25 March for Mozambique.

Photo: Fynbos Conservation Experience - Photo Credit: Gondwana Game Reserve
“We have been inspired since day one by the Fynbos found on the Reserve; its beauty, diversity and rarity is astounding, but we needed the right individuals with the expertise and passion to help us get more of a handle on it scientifically to not only better protect it, but also to better share it with our guests.” “By making our Fynbos conservation part of our tourism offering it enriches our guest’s safari and makes its conservation more sustainable - a win win,” Owner Wendy Rutherfoord comments. Gondwana is adding this new activity in time for Green Season starting in May, when Fynbos is in all its glory. The slightly cooler, sun-drenched clear days are ideal for outdoor activities like easy walks, hiking or mountain biking in the reserve’s mountains and valleys amongst wild game. Due to its accessible location, Gondwana is the perfect base from where to explore nearby attractions on the picturesque Garden Route. From July onwards, visitors can witness the arrival of the migratory Southern Right Whales along the coastline. The nearby coastal town of Mossel Bay, only thirty minutes by car, makes for a great day trip and offers whale watching and deep sea fishing tours. Golf enthusiasts will find no less than seven championship golf courses within close proximity. For more information visit www.gondwanagr.co.za

The Yacht Club Raises The Profile of Cape Town’s Foreshore 18 April 2019 marks the official unveiling of the Amdec Group’s latest development, The Yacht Club. Valued at R1.5 billion, this prestigious mixed-use property includes 170 luxury residential apartments, 6 000m2 of premium-grade office space spanning two levels, and Africa’s first AC Hotel by Marriott. The Cape Town CBD has experienced strong growth over the course of the last decade, stimulated in large part by the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, which saw billions of rands and thousands of people pour into the city, along with substantial private investment. This influx of capital and investment raised the profile of the CBD and positioned it as a sought-after place to live, work and play.
Recognising the need to provide a quality mixed-use development and aligning with the City of Cape Town’s call for “the right developments in the right locations”, the Amdec Group acquired the 11 816m2 strip of vacant land on the Cape Town foreshore in 2015. The scheme was launched in September of that year, sold out in 14 months and construction was completed within an impressive two-year period. Built and designed using the new urban principles for which the Amdec Group is renowned, The Yacht Club comprises two apartment blocks, separated by a corridor of open space, in order to comply with the strict building regulations set by local authorities.
The West block comprises 120 apartments and the AC Hotel by Marriott, while the East Block houses 50 apartments set above two floors of premium office space. Residents and visitors enjoy spectacular harbour views to the north and Table Mountain views to the south. Situated on the banks of the Roggebaai Canal, The Yacht Club’s eminent neighbours include the newly expanded Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), the V&A Waterfront and its award-winning Silo District (home of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) and the new Cape Town Cruise Liner Terminal. A company recognised for its passion and innovation, the Amdec Group has a 30-year track record of developing and managing world-class mixed-use precincts, introduce another large-scale precinct to the foreshore area in the form of the R15 billion Harbour Arch precinct, the Group’s most ambitious Cape-based project to date. Results such as these bear testament to the Amdec Group’s decision to develop and build on a site that presented a number of physical and design-related challenges. Along with the relatively small footprint of the long narrow site, it had to contend with very strict building guidelines from the City of Cape Town in terms of retaining a view corridor out to sea and building within specific height restrictions, hence two separate buildings of different heights with a view corridor in between. Building directly onto the seawater canal also required innovative solutions.

INCREDIBLE WITH ROLA TOYOTA GROUP
DOUGH! @THEWINESAMARIE Now there is a name that kneads recognition, something a lot more wineries should get their fists into. When shaped into something special, one is rewarded with plenty deliciousness to feed thy wine soul. I have the grave suspicion that many wine drinkers deprive themselves of the privilege to enjoy different wines due to the simple fact that they cannot pronounce its name. Loosely translated as “the little green one” in French, “Petit Verdot” doesn’t exactly hold the promise of something fruity either, and it certainly doesn’t help that it is most often hidden away in blends. Being a late ripening varietal (and often harvested before fully ripe) it was traditionally reserved as a minor blending grape in the Bordeaux region of France. Lucky for us this “dough” was rolled out to the new world where it is bathed in sunshine to ripen to its full potential, adding a plethora of dimensions to the wine. Petit Verdot has made a bow in some of the greatest Bordeaux blends in South Africa but only a handful of (awarded) winemakers have taken the leap of faith to bottle it as a single varietal.

“Petit Verdot holds the key to structure, colour and concentration,” says KWV winemaker Izelle van Blerk. “Add a mere 5% to any blend and Petit Verdot will unlock its essence.” It requires a vast understanding of the vineyard as well as a meticulous approach in the cellar, Izelle adds. “The relationship with Petit Verdot cannot be learned from books. Experience with this varietal is a vital ingredient.” This includes tasting the berries several times in the vineyard, sorting bunches and berries, fermentation and extraction techniques, selecting the most suitable French cooper to supply your barrels and then to watch it being shaped into something magnificent. The Mentors Petit Verdot 2016 from KWV is literally sold out but is an excellent example of a regional blend: grapes from Stellenbosch (to provide structure), Walker Bay (to add luscious red fruit) and Robertson (to add concentration and darker fruit). The Walker Bay estate Benguela Cove has just released a single variety Petit Verdot made from a 100% estate grown grapes. “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride,” Johann Fourie described the fate of Petit Verdot hardly being given the “single” platform for wine lovers to fall in love with it. Johann also journeyed with Petit Verdot from vineyard to cellar to be able to understand what it wants. Made from a 0.95 hectare vineyard, a combination of techniques honoured the intrinsic qualities of this variety with only 660 bottles produced. The maiden vintage of this Vinography Petit Verdot 2017 delivers on a montage of red and dark fruit, hemmed with a gentle perfume of lavender, freshly pruned roses and hints of Turkish delight. The power of this wine lies in its elegance and the delicate nuances that define a sophisticated wine. “My continued faith in Petit Verdot nurtured a commitment that was concluded in this wine. Great care and focus have gone into this varietal, aligning viticultural and winemaking techniques to achieve what is desired to meet our expectations for this quality-single varietal bottling.”

THE BENGUELA COVE CATALINA SEMILLON HAS LANDED! A trajectory of fine wines has paved the way for Benguela Cove to bring in its flagship wine. This long-waited SA 2019 Platters five star achiever and maiden vintage Catalina Semillon 2017 was launched on 5 April with nearly 80% already sold. This vintage also marks the year in which their state of the art wine cellar was completed, celebrating a huge milestone for this Walker Bay estate. Joining the limelight is their new artisan range, Vinography. This consists of a Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and Chardonnay 2017, both having received 4 ½ stars in Platters 2019 with a Petit Verdot that completes the range as a single varietal red. Benguela Cove enthusiasts also have a bunch of new vintage releases to look out for such as the five-way Bordeaux blend, Collage 2017, and an exciting addition of a Malbec 2017 to stock up for winter. Their Lighthouse Collection is now also joined by a Syrah. “What makes Benguela Cove an exciting wine estate to work with, is its great diversity of soil and slopes and the variety of cultivars planted here. An added bonus is the close proximity to the ocean that ensures a cooling effect with welcoming breezes to keep the vineyards healthy and disease free,” Fourie shared with his captivated audience. The Catalina Semillon 2017 is made from a 0.9 ha single vineyard and celebrates exceptional quality while honouring the land on which the estate is built. The wine is named after the long-lived flying boat that was on lease to the Royal Air Force and operated from the Bot River lagoon during the Second World War. The Catalina was used for coastal patrols and aerial support of the allied convoys carrying supplies between Europe, Africa and the East. Of the fourteen RAF men stationed at the base, three returned after the war and married South African ladies. Catalina is the epitome of a wine created to improve with age, hence something to look forward to every year. Only 1400 bottles were produced and the wine is sold on allocation only in a set of three bottles. For more information on acquiring an allocation of Catalina, send an email to samarie.smith@benguelacove.co.za
SCHOOL OF GIN OPENS IN MOSSEL BAY With South Africans being internationally renowned winemakers, it was just a matter of time before those skills spread to other beverages. First came the craft beers but, over the past three years, it’s the local gin scene that has really exploded, particularly in the Western Cape. Now an innovative collaboration between Protea Hotel by Marriott Mossel Bay and Inverroche Distillery has resulted in the opening of Mossel Bay’s very first Gin School, an experience set to delight both guests booked into the hotel as well as locals from across the Garden Route and visitors from further afield. The Gin School is being run in association with the hotel’s already iconic The Café Gannet restaurant, with the school itself having transformed what was previously the Ochre Conference Room into a new venue with a sophisticated warm ambience that enables patrons to sit bar style, lounge on Chesterfield sofas or be seated in a traditional restaurant surround. Inverroche has become well known for the signature gins that it produces which incorporate flavours from the unique fynbos floral kingdom found only in the Western Cape. Therefore, to enhance the gin-making experience, a fynbos garden has also been established at the school so that visitors can not only learn more about these plants but harvest leaves to use in their own gin creations. The school will also teach guests about the history and origins of gins, along with Inverroche’s own story, as well as the distilling process and how to create original gin from scratch. Classes are offered twice a day (at 10h30 and 15h00), and can accommodate anywhere from one to 36 guests at a time. Bookings for individuals can be made on the day, but booking in advance is recommended for larger groups.
Gin and food pairings are also offered daily, incorporating everything from light canapés to traditional South African meals, which include lightly smoked rooibos salmon nigiri, and ‘vetkoek’ with bobotie mince and a spekboom chutney. Situated halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, and only a 20-minute drive from George Airport, the hotel itself also has much to offer. Originally built in 1846 and one of the oldest buildings in Mossel Bay, the landmark 38-roomed hotel nestles on the town’s shoreline overlooking Santos Bay beach and the harbour, with the majestic Outeniqua mountains as its backdrop. Once known as The Post Office Tree Manor Hotel, the stone walls and Mediterranean-style buildings that make up the hotel form part of the Dias Museum complex, which – along with The Café Gannet seafood restaurant – is also home to the popular Blue Oyster cocktail bar.

In 1999 the farm land was purchased to create this dream. The original buildings on the farm were converted and the agricultural land was restored into a nature reserve. Fast forward 20 years and !Khwa ttu - meaning ‘water hole’ in San – is open to the public and houses a world-unique and state-of-the-art San Heritage Centre with interactive displays and presentations that depict the lives of the San. San guides tell the unfiltered stories of their people - coupled with audio and film to really bring the stories to life and immerse visitors in the ways of the San. Live talks and interactive demonstrations are also offered. The !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre is a great deal more than a collection of artefacts and historical photos. It’s a pioneering initiative that embraces the principle of community curation, led by a team of academics and San consultants from across Southern Africa - it is an important tool in preserving the San history, culture and stories.
Cape West Coast based tourism destination !Khwa ttu has taken the title in the Best Responsible Cultural or Heritage Experience category at the African Responsible Tourism Awards 2019. Announced at World Travel Market Africa 2019, the African Responsible Tourism Awards celebrate the shining stars of responsible tourism on the African continent – those who are making a positive impact on local cultures, communities and biodiversity. Finalists and winners of this prestigious award have a passion that extends far beyond the commercial – but also focuses on the well-being of local people and communities and the longevity of their environments.
In addition to the San Heritage Centre, visitors to !Khwa ttu can expect a restaurant, art gallery, gift shop, Dream Museum, San guided nature walks, mountain bike trails, hikes, trail runs, and accommodation. For more information visit www.khwattu.org
RENAMED WINE & FOOD TOURISM CONFERENCE PRESENTS THE WINE & FOOD TOURISM AWARDS
The annual Business of Wine & Food Tourism Conference, currently in its fourth year and known as the Wine & Food Tourism Conference from 2019, introduces the Wine & Food Tourism Awards. “The aim of this new awards platform is to recognise those individuals and teams who have made exceptional contributions to the development and promotion of the South African wine and food tourism industry,” says Margi Biggs, wine and gourmet tourism specialist and convenor of the Wine & Food Tourism Conference. “We have so much in our favour in South Africa. We have physical beauty, we have critically acclaimed wines that have captured the attention of leading tastemakers. Our restaurants and gastronomy are renowned. Once again, we feature on the list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2018. Our ingredients are fresh, traceable and delicious. Our food markets routinely star on social media. We are globally known for our friendly hospitality. These are all massive drawcards.” “Fortunately, tourism in the Western Cape is the region’s fastest-growing sector, employing over 200 000 people and generating R17 billion for the economy each year. We believe the potential is there to grow the number of jobs to 300 000. All of us can help to make that happen. My view is that the new Wine & Food Tourism Awards could play a definite role in doing so.” “We are also delighted to announce that Jean-Pierre Rossouw will serve as the awards programme chairperson, overseeing the judging panel. Publisher of Platter’s South African Wine Guide, the country most authoritative guide on local wines, as well as of Rossouw’s Restaurant Guide, an independently-minded guide on the South African dining landscape, Rossouw is a well-known and respected personality in the country’s wine and food industry,” Biggs explains. The judging categories of the Wine & Food Tourism Awards 2019 are: Innovation, recognising outstanding and original innovation in concepts, products and/or services that make a valuable contribution, offer unique experiences, and/or boost food and/ or wine tourism in South Africa; Service Excellence, highlighting those in South Africa’s wine and food industries who excel in service, consistently providing memorable customer experiences; and The Authentic South African Experience, acknowledging initiatives that create experiences true to the South African culture in which consumers can fully immerse themselves, at the same time promoting the country’s cultural heritage through wine and food. The Innovation category will be judged by marketing thought-leader Steve Massey, strategic marketing expert Mac Mabidilala as well as tourism professional and co-founder of the Oranjezicht City Farm Sheryl Ozinsky; while Service Excellence will see tourism and hospitality expert Horst Frehse, conferencing specialist Gwynneth Matthews and accomplished sommelier Higgo Jacobs as judges. Wine.co.za founder and owner Judy Brower, hospitality entrepreneur Janet Pillai and wine industry marketing and communications consultant André Morgenthal will serve as judges in The Authentic South African Experience category. There will be a maximum of three honourees in each category, and each of them will get the opportunity to include the Wine & Food Tourism Awards 2019 logo on all their marketing material for the following year. Individuals or teams who have been named as honourees for three years in a row will receive membership to the elite Wine & Food Tourism Honourees Club. Thereafter they will not be eligible to be nominated for the same award again. Participants may nominate as many wine and/or food establishments as they wish, in any or all of the categories. A separate form needs to be submitted for each nomination. Nominations could be submitted via www.wineandfood.co.za. The closing date for participants to submit their nominations is 10 June 2019. The honourees per category of the Wine & Food Tourism Awards 2019 will be announced at the Wine & Food Tourism Conference 2019, taking place on 18 September 2019 at Spier near Stellenbosch.

Experience Warmwaterberg Spa & Mineral Hot Spring on Route 62 Warmwaterberg Spa and Mineral Hot Spring offers visitors an authentic rustic experience away from the stylish, luxury, five-star service of state-of-theart Day Spa’s. The venue is rustic, close to earth, unspoilt, peaceful in a tranquil setting with healing elements in the water able to revitalize and rejuvenate the body and soul - meant for people who live close to nature and seek, “Water that Heals.” Warmwaterberg Spa and Mineral Hot Spring dates back to the early 19th century – with its setting in a farming community situated between Barrydale and Ladismith on Route 62. The history of the farm Warmwaterberg and the hot spring, situated on 600ha of land, is closely interwoven with the history of the Le Grange family who today, five generations and 119 years later, still remain in control of the property. Artesian Spring The Artesian Spring is the main attraction at Warmwaterberg Spa. This spring is believed to be 4-6km deep with a temperature at the source of 43.5° Celsius. The source of the water is almost a thousand years old and saturated with iron and manganese, but without any traces of Sulphur, which makes it unique.
The Studio Bath Houses which were completed in 2015 are modern day tributes to the Historic Bath Houses. The studio units are fitted with a King size bed, custom built luxurious bath and indoor braai/fireplace and is suitable for couples looking for rest and relaxation. A toilet and shower is located outside the bedroom door in metal cylinders to add to the rustic experience. The fully bi-folding front doors provide an incredible indoor-outdoor flow, providing the perfect place to enjoy the Karoo environment. The Victorian styled ten roomed Main House or Sanatorium built in 1907 illustrates the architecture of a typical Karoo Victorian “ostrich” house of the early 20th century. Each of these rooms has a private bathroom with a walk-in 2000 litre Roman Bath where guests can luxuriate. All baths in the units are supplied with spring water at 43.5°Celsius. Three styles of Timber Chalets are available: one, two or three-bedroom units, each with its own kitchenette, shower and outdoor braai facility. The Timber Chalets offer one, two, or three bedrooms with kitchen, private bathroom and outside braai facilities. Although rustic and simple, they offer budgetconsecious accommodation. The 20 Campsites are serviced with power and braai-facilities, while the ablution block offers natural hot water and contains two walk-in roman baths.
The water is untreated, has a high Iron content and therefore, extremely healthy and sweet-tasting. The water also contains traces of Lithium which has a soothing and calming impact on the human body. Regular visitors to Warmwaterberg Spa believe they have experienced healing from arthritis and various other ailments. The pool deck consist of two hot swimming pools, a cold pool as well as a number of roman baths on the property. The water is untreated and comes out of the earth as it is, and is piped to the pools without any additives. Self-catering Accommodation Warmwaterberg Spa offers only Self-catering accommodation. The 1890’s mud and stone buildings (“badhuisies” or “Bath Houses”) were originally constructed as bathrooms for travellers. The Main House constructed in 1907 became the Historic Sanatorium. Wooden Timber Chalets were later built, and camping sites made available to facilitate the demand. The Historic Bath Houses have been retained as close as possible to its original 1886 mud and stone design. The three-roomed building consist of two bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen with a fireplace, private toilet and outdoor “braai-facility.” The main bedroom has a double bed and private bath, while the second bedroom has two single beds and private bath.
Functions A typical example of Karoo vernacular is the Old School built in 1914 for the children of the area. This building has been kept in the same state it was built, and today caters for a group of 30 people. The original cement dam was reconstructed as a Lapa and serves as a focal point to the Restaurant, Bar, and Kiosk, and is ideal for weddings and social gatherings, providing seating for as many as 130 guests. Warmwaterberg Spa also facilitates a full-service licensed Restaurant and Bar, open every day of the year (excluding New Year’s Day), an off-sales as well as a small kiosk offering basic necessities to guests. Things to do While relaxing at Warmwaterberg Spa guests can enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of the elevated Klein Karoo landscape with five mountain ranges including the Warmwaterberg, Langeberg and Swartberg Mountains and a horizon stretching 90km in the distance. The views are spectacular, not to mention the sunrise and sunset, Milky Way and stars at night. Barren and desolate as the area may seem to be the Succulent Plant Kingdom, unrivalled in specie numbers, diversity and beauty gives meaning to the peaceful and tranquil environment of Warmwaterberg Spa. The Spa provides its own spectacular 6km walking trail on the edge of the mountain taking you behind the spring eye where over 2000 different endemic species can be identified, and where the Springbok, Duiker and Steenbok ponder. LOADSHEDDING, WHY MINI GRIDS
PARK INN BY RADISSON
ARE THE ANSWER & WHY SA DOESN’T HAVE THEM YET
MAXIMISES ROOFTOP SPACE WITH HYBRID PVT PROJECT
“Mini grids could very quickly sort out a lot of the biggest challenges that South Africa is having with its energy supply at the moment” says Dr Sam Duby, Africa Director for TFE Energy and mini grid expert. He adds: “Deregulation would open a market for people to produce power and sell power and that would revolutionise the energy landscape in South Africa. Technically it wouldn’t be a difficult or complex thing to do; there are plenty of precedents around the world where it has worked really well.” Mini grids have become increasingly important on the continent and are being built at a rapid rate with more than 2000 mini grids currently across Africa. Says Dr Duby: “It’s a combination of people waking up to the fact that it is the only realistic solution for remote and rural electrification, combined with the ever falling costs of the technology that make it increasingly viable. At the same time you have got governments starting to see precedents, starting to see regulations and policy landscapes that have worked and are not quite so scared of it as a route. Slowly the regulation side is easing and as a result the sector is growing. This is also echoed by an increase in investment, both from the donor community as well as the private community. Mini grids are hugely important now and ever more so going forward.” The biggest challenge is South Africa’s regulated energy market, he explains: “In the context of what is happening in South Africa’s energy landscape now, the recently rolling blackouts and huge amounts of pressure on the ageing supply, the generators.” “Effectively,” says Dr Duby, “If we had more of a deregulated market and people were allowed to build their own power sources, whether it is a vineyard with solar panels on the roof, and to feed any surplus into the grid, you would have these decentralised nodes of generation, all of which were feeding into the grid. This means we wouldn’t be so reliant on what currently are just a few sources of energy. Whole communities and towns could become 100% energy independent.”
Park Inn by Radisson Cape Town Foreshore, together with Solarus, installed Cape Town CBD’s first large-scale commercial hybrid Photovoltaic and Thermal (PVT) project. The installation was completed in mid-March and fully operational. It is located on the hotel’s rooftop and produces an average of 1050kWh of energy per week. The installation consists of 30 innovative PowerCollectors, a unique technology which combines generation of thermal (T) energy with the photovoltaic (PV) generation of electricity and produces one of the highest energy yields ever measured. When compared to traditional solar panels, the PowerCollector produces both electricity and hot water output up to 70°C and delivers three times more energy on the same surface area. In addition to the renewable energy produced on the roof of the hotel, the installation also saves 79,000 litres of water per year by reducing energy used from the grid. This is because for every kWh electricity bought from the South African power utility company Eskom uses 1.45 litres of water to produce. This is significant since water saving is a fundamental factor to any resident or business located in Cape Town, due to the city’s current water crisis.
At the upcoming African Utility Week and POWERGEN Africa in Cape Town from 14-16 May, Dr Duby will address the Energy Revolution Africa conference session on a recent, long awaited breakthrough in the African micro grid industry. “South Africa’s national grid, when operating optimally, currently supplies electricity access to approximately 85% of South Africans. Through the implementation of mini grids, which are essentially a smaller version of the main grid, the country can reach an enviable 100% energy access rate,“ says Nicolette Pombo-van Zyl, editor of ESI Africa, a leading energy industry journal. “The idea is not to go off grid, but to develop mini grids that tie into the main grid. Regulation and policy must be amended to accommodate this transition, which is feasible for both rural electrification projects and for municipalities and metropolitans to attract business development and a rising middle class through the offer of reliable and affordable power. A mini grid model working in conjunction with the national grid is a workable future for South Africa.”
The energy produced in conjunction with the reduced demand from the grid will provide electricity and heat throughout the hotel. Over a 20-year period, this installation will save the hotel approximately €250,000. “In the hospitality industry, there is a high heat demand and energy cost, it was with this in mind, and our unwavering responsible business mindset that installing the 30 PowerCollectors, maximising our small rooftop made absolute sense. With the location of our hotel, our rooftop is also the perfect location to absorb as much sun as possible and generate three times more energy,” said Jim Schleich, general manager of Park Inn by Radisson Cape Town Foreshore. Inge Huijbrechts, global vice president, responsible business, Radisson Hotel Group said: “As a responsible business leader, we aim to align with the global targets of the COP21 Paris Climate Agreement and significantly reduce our hotels’ carbon footprint. As part of our Think Planet pillar in our responsible business strategy, one of the areas we are focusing on is increasing the number of Radisson Group hotels making use of renewable energy.”
WOOLWORTHS INTRODUCE NEW ‘PLASTIC-BAG-FREE’ STORES Woolworths will be introducing low-cost reusable bags to a number of stores across the country and launching three additional plastic-bag-free outlets. This follows the successful six-month trial at Western Cape outlets, which included Woolworths’ first plastic-bag-free store. Following the announcement of its commitment to phase out single-use shopping bags by 2020, Woolworths trialled reusable shopping bags in Western Cape stores at V&A Waterfront, Palmyra, Pinelands, and Steenberg, with Steenberg being the first store to become single-use-bag-free. Since the trials’ launch in November 2018, over 100 000 single-use bags were saved from unnecessary use as customers opted for affordable reusable shopping bags. This project is part of the retailer’s attempt to shift consumer behavior to choosing reusable bags as part of its commitment to achieving the ambitious goal of becoming a zero waste to landfill company and changing to 100% reusable or recyclable packaging by 2020 while completely phasing out single-use plastics. “We know that many of our customers fully support our zero packaging waste to landfill journey and they want to see it happen as fast as possible. But this is not a path that we can walk alone. To succeed, we need our customers, our suppliers and the South African recycling industry to work with us,” said Woolworths South Africa CEO Zyda Rylands. “Apart from the obvious benefit of helping customers change to reusable bags, the project has other important spin-offs,” the company said. “The reusable shopping bag’s fabric is made locally out of recycled plastic bottles and is recyclable.
To date the production of the low-cost reusable bag has resulted in over 129 000 plastic bottles being removed from South African waste streams to be recycled and made into the bag’s fabric.” The additional Woolworths stores in the Western Cape that will start selling the low cost reusable bag from May 2019 include: Constantia Village, Hout Bay, Knysna Mall an Waterstone in Somerset West.

A FORMULA 1 EXPERIENCE IS COMING TO THE MOTHER CITY Red Bull Cape Town Circuit will give tens of thousands of South African fans the chance to witness the thundering power of a Formula 1 car at close quarters. Red Bull Racing has brought the adrenaline-fuelled thrills of F1 racing to cities around the world, from Hanoi and Tokyo to Mexico City, and now Cape Town. Sure, you’ve watched a Grand Prix on TV, but there’s no substitute for the ear-splitting roar of the engine, the haze of tyre smoke and aroma of burning rubber. Red Bull’s Racing cars will be speeding through the Mother City this year on 2 June 2019, with renowned drivers such as David Coulthard behind the wheels. After rumours circulating for weeks, it has finally been confirmed that Coulthard, the legend himself, will drive Red Bull’s car for the 2019 Red Bull Photo Credit: Garth Milan/Red Bull Content Pool Cape Town Circuit event. Coulthard is a prime example of F1 glamour and prestige and his presence on the road will add an air of international flair to the long-awaited event. Overall, the iconic driver has raked in 13 race wins and 62 podium finishes, making him a force to be reckoned with. Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner, commented: “Formula 1 is a global sport, but with a finite number of countries on the racing calendar, it is down to our show car team to travel farther afield and share the speed and sound of our sport with as many fans as possible.” Red Bull Racing has taken the thrills of Formula 1 to far-flung cities and returns to South Africa to excite more fans in 2019. “We received an incredibly warm welcome when we first took our show car to Cape Town back in 2011 and we are delighted to return this year, powering the car down Cape Town’s iconic Grand Parade on June 2nd,” explains Horner. “South Africa has a great heritage in F1, stretching back to 1962, and we look forward to seeing fans, old and new, turn out in force to witness the spectacle.” Speaking at the Bahrain GP about the Cape Town showcase Coulthard also shared his excitement: “I’m super excited to be in Cape Town in June for the Red Bull Circuit event. I’ll be driving the Formula One car, demonstrating the power, energy and excitement of what Grand Prix can bring. I haven’t been to South Africa since we were in Kyalami in 2011, so I’m delighted we’re bringing Formula One back to Cape Town. See you there, looking forward to it.”
