La Motte Museum Reconstructs Pierneef’s Famous Johannesburg Station Panels As the permanent host to Jacob Hendrik Pierneef’s Heritage Collection, the La Motte Museum is delighted to present a recreation of what is probably the artist’s most famous work, the momentous Station Panels commissioned for the old Johannesburg Park Station. The recreation in the La Motte Museum’s Pierneef exhibition space comprises a single column with double niches from the old Johannesburg Park Station. The panels are projected into the first niche, with a replica of the Amajuba panel displayed in the second niche. The reconstruction can be viewed at an installed height of between 3.5 and 9 metres, offering a glimpse of the initial intent of the work and providing insight into the creation and history of the artist’s most acclaimed public commission.

Building work on a new Johannesburg railway station commenced in 1926. At the time, advancement of tourism both to and within South Africa, was the responsibility of the South African Railways and Harbours. Being acquainted with both consulting architects, Gordon Leith and Gerhard Moerdijk, Pierneef was officially commissioned in 1929 to paint the 32 works. The works were to show the natural splendour of South Africa, indigenous trees as well as places of historical interest to encourage tourism and rail travel within the Union of South Africa.

BUCKET LIST DESTINATION NOT JUST FOR A BIG 5 SAFARI

The commission was monumental in scale and volume with 28 paintings having to fit within spaces ranging between 146 x 126 - 149cm, and an additional four spaces of 145 x 31cm. The panels were to be displayed in the arched walls of the station concourse, each in its allocated space at a height of 4,25m. The square format and the height at which the panels were to be displayed presented Pierneef with the task of reconsidering and planning the landscapes accordingly, bearing in mind that they would be viewed from a distance and from below.

With the richest temperate flora in the world and a myriad of rare, critically endangered species, Gondwana Game Reserve, on the Garden Route is a bucket list destination not just for a Big 5 safari, but also for anyone with an interest in botany and biodiversity to explore indigenous wild flowers and plants that exist nowhere else in the world. Gondwana recently launched a Fynbos Conservation Experience which includes a guided nature walk accompanied by their resident botanist. Among the 1000 plant-, 118 bird-, 29 mammal- and 21 amphibian species coexisting in this 11,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, participants are bound to uncover fascinating stories as they help monitor and map the types found on the game reserve. The new hands-on experience will give guests a chance to learn about the conservation of the rare and endangered Fynbos biome, affording them the opportunity to get a more up-close understanding of the stunning indigenous flora and fauna.

The activity takes 2-3 hours and is offered daily in the downtime between morning and evening game drives. Participants will assist experts in their research conducted in different monitoring zones throughout the reserve, learning identification, monitoring parameters and geo-mapping of the thousands of Fynbos plant species found on the reserve. The collected data is vital in understanding and recording this vanishing and isolated floral kingdom that only exists along the Cape coastal belt of South Africa. Guests will see amazing plants in bloom throughout the year, including the famous King Protea and many endemic species of birds, insects and antelope. “This new experience is a complete natural progression for Gondwana. The growing popularity of our Eco Camp Conservation program has confirmed that guests love getting a behind-the-scenes view of the conservation efforts on the Reserve.” Continue Reading Page 3

Pierneef adapted his colours subtly to match the soft tints of the marble columns in the hall and repeated this limited palette throughout the body of work for uniformity. Combined with meticulously constructed compositions of firm lines and geometrical structures, the depicted scenes exuded monumentality and calm.

The panels were unveiled to the public in 1932. The journey of the panels thereafter included two restorations and took them to exhibitions at various institutions from the Pretoria Art Museum, to the South African Railway Museum and Art Gallery, and the Johannesburg Art Gallery. TNP0519.indd 1

In 1990 the South African Transport Services became a public company with the formation of a large transportation network named Transnet. Dr Anton Rupert was approached by Transnet to negotiate the permanent loan of the panels to the Rupert Art Foundation and from 2002, all the panels were exhibited in the Jan Rupert Centre at Graaff-Reinet. In 2010 the panels travelled to the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch where they have been housed ever since. Today, these paintings are well protected and accessible to the public, but not exhibiting them in their original installation, means sacrificing their intended function of being seen within the larger context of the architectonic whole. This inspired the La Motte Museum’s recreation of the initial setting by producing a section thereof along with a visualisation of the panels. The reconstruction does not claim to be a precise imitation of the Johannesburg Station Panel installation, but rather to offer visitors insight into the history of the creation and original purpose of this exceptional project.

Penny Streeter OBE Wins South African Chamber of Commerce UK Award Zimbabwe-born Penny Streeter OBE is one of the most successful women entrepreneurs in South Africa and the UK. At one time living in a homeless refuge with three children, Penny has since built a business empire from startup out of sheer hard work and tenacity. Her medical recruitment agency A24 Group, which she founded in 1996, achieved rapid growth through an outstanding business model that she created. The firm provides more than 100,000 hours’ work each week for healthcare professionals in the UK and South Africa. Since 2016 Penny has also built a major wine, hospitality and leisure business across both countries, Benguela Collection. It started with the acquisition and substantial investment in the Benguela Cove vineyard in South Africa’s Walker Bay wine region, with a 450-ton winery and 173 acres of vines. In 2016 Penny identified new opportunities internationally for a South Africanstyle wine farm experience and created the first ‘golf and wine estate’ in the UK. Some 38,000 vines were planted at the 500 acre parkland site at Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate, at Horsham in West Sussex. Photo: Penny Streeter OBE

The South African Chamber of Commerce’s Business Woman of the Year Award was presented to Penny Streeter OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) on 15 May 2019 at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel, London. The Awards are a celebration of the achievements of the South African community in the UK. Award categories focus on specific areas of business and community activity.

In 2017 Penny acquired a neighbouring property in the UK, Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens. She has restored the 240 acre site, which is fast becoming a major tourist destination since its April 2019 opening. It features probably the finest woodland gardens in England, Grade I Listed and first planted in 1801, and also a newly planted Pinotage vineyard. Wine production is a key focus. The 66,000 vines planted across both UK estates are estimated to crop at some 75 tons, to produce 50,000 bottles of sparkling wine each year. For more information visit www.benguelacollection.com

Sealand Brings Its Stylish,

City’s Huge CCTV Footprint

Upcycled Outdoor Gear To New V&A Precinct

Helps To Make Cape Town Safer The City of Cape Town’s network of 1 600 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras makes it one of the largest on the continent. Between December 2018 and February 2019 CCTV cameras detected 4 211 incidents, of which 1 512 (36%) were of a criminal nature. On 30 April 2019 members of the media got a rare glimpse into the camera control room in Goodwood which is vital to the City’s efforts to make Cape Town safer. “Our CCTV system has become an important resource in crime prevention, crime detection and traffic management. The City’s Strategic Surveillance Unit (SSU) forms part of the Metro Police Department which oversees the procurement and installation of the technology. The SSU network is on average 85% to 90% operational which is the international benchmark for camera functionality,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Sealand, the Cape Town born, globally recognised brand of environmentally smart high-end bags, accessories and apparel, has launched a store in the new Dock Road Junction at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Between December 2018 and February 2019 CCTV cameras detected 4 211 incidents, of which 1 512 (36%) were of a criminal nature. During this period, 64 arrests were made on a range of charges, including breaking and entering, possession of drugs, driving under the influence and cable theft.

Rooted in Cape Town where mountains and ocean vividly connect, the brand upcycles the structural properties and textures of waste material – specifically yacht sails, tents and advertising billboards and banners – into a new context, thus reducing the generation of waste and promoting sustainability. The new store now gives South Africans and international tourists direct access to a wide range of Sealand products, previously only available online or in high end international stores such as Selfridges, Matches Fashion and Mr Porter. Co-founder and business visionary, Mike Schlebach, says that the store is a natural progression of the brand’s growth into direct retail. “We have wanted a space to host events and express our educational voice for some time and we are excited that we have found the right bricks-and-mortar space to showcase Sealand’s full brand and lifestyle offering. We have a second retail store planned for Jozi, which will open during 2020. Over the next ten years, our vision is to see more Sealand stores strategically placed in different regions around the world.” Jasper Eales is Schlebach’s partner and the brains behind the brand’s designs: “My design philosophy is two-fold. First, reduce a design to its simplest functioning form where you remove rather than add, keeping in mind the principle that form follows function. Second, I try to incorporate environmentally responsible thinking -June Winter 2017.pdf 1 2017/05/27 11:12:02 AM with theA5Henri'sAd ultimate goal being to tread lightly on this beautiful earth and to inspire others to do the same.”

In the latest cable theft arrests, four suspects with over 400 metres of stolen cable were apprehended in two different incidents all because of the performance of the City’s vigilant camera operators. The CCTV system also provides valuable intelligence and data for investigations that are carried out by law enforcement agencies. The number of cameras currently in the Cape Town CCTV network is as follows: Freeway Management System: 239, Integrated Rapid Transit System: 713 and Metro Police Strategic Surveillance Unit: 648. A pool of 120 CCTV operators have several responsibilities, ranging from operating and monitoring the surveillance screens, reporting incidents as evidence and of potentially contacting the police and emergency services as required. The operators are trained in the use of the cameras for crime prevention and detection, traffic management, by-law infringements, fire detection and prevention and general area management.

A non-invasive inspection allows for an unbiased, detailed assessment of the critical components of a home. Components such as, the roof structure, the roof cavity, gutters and downpipes, walls, foundations, floors, ceilings, bedrooms, geyser, bathrooms, kitchens, boundary walls and even the garage is inspected. Defects are photographed, classified, costed and presented in a detailed report within 24 - 48 hours after leaving the site. This gives the buyer confidence to negotiate a realistic price for the home - before signing the voetstoots clause in the sales contract. A home inspection for the seller, allows an opportunity to correct defects before entering the home on the market. This builds trust with the potential buyer and enables the sales transaction.

MATIS SKIN ANALYZER HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR SKINS LANGUAGE Your skincare needs change constantly. This is why being on the same product year in and year out is never a good thing. Have you ever wondered what is happening, beneath the visible layer of your skin? The Matis skin analysing device helps you understand your skin’s “language”. The device takes a picture of the surface of the skin but also uses a UV filter to reveal what is underneath the surface of the skin. This device takes an in-depth look at the skin; 30 times deeper than what is possible to be seen with the naked eye. The health of your skin is then measured by the device, by looking at 8 key indicators. The measurements of these indicators are then compared to a database of people of the same ethnic and age group. Within 5 minutes you have a tailored skin diagnosis, which will help you to correct and repair your skin in order to reveal its natural balanced beauty. The Matis product range is extensive and caters for all skin types. We know you are going to love this!

She saw the same results she had seen on the clients. The ‘love affair’ with Matis had begun. Generational Beauty Products A ‘love affair’ she passed on to her teenage daughter and her 3-year old. Matis has been on the market for generations; Elize is sure her grandchildren and their children will use Matis too. Since the first Matis laboratories in 1936, Matis has kept up with skin science and research. In 2016 as a leader in the professional beauty industry, Matis celebrated 80 years of success. Cape Town ranked as top city for meetings in Africa Cape Town has again ranked as the top city for international association meetings in Africa, according to the 2018 International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Statistics Report, with a total of 42 such meetings taking place in the Mother City in 2018. In addition, Stellenbosch hosted an additional 9 international association meetings during this time. As a result, the Western Cape region is responsible for hosting 51 of the 100 international association meetings that took place in South Africa during 2018. The main subject areas for these conferences included the medical sciences, education and technology, with academics from local universities such as the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, University of the Western Cape and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology playing an important role in attracting key associations. According to the ICCA report, the next biggest meeting destinations on the continent were: Kigali (26 meetings); Marrakesh (24 meetings); Nairobi (24 meetings) and Johannesburg (16 meetings). Alderman James Vos, the Mayoral Committee member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management in the City of Cape Town welcomed the ranking. “During 2009 to 2018, 492 meetings took place in Cape Town – testament to why the region is still the #1 Convention destination on the African continent, ranking #1 again in the 2018 statistics report.” “This ranking has been retained for the past 10 years and confirms that we are the meetings capital of Africa.”

ment into the province, not to mention growth potential for our local knowledge economy that meetings add.” Koch continued: “We are also excited to note that 8 of these 42 meetings exceeded 1000 or more delegates. The average length of a meeting was 3,8 days, with a total estimated 26 300 delegates attending these meetings during the year. We are particularly grateful to our partners at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Century City Convention Centre and “This provides an important boost to our local economy during the other venues, as well as the South African National Convention Bureau, for the enormous support winter months, with important benefits to leisure tourism and invest- provided in ensuring that we remain the top business tourism destination in Africa.” Corne Koch, Head of the Cape Town and the Western Cape Convention Bureau, a division of Wesgro, explained that of the 42 meetings taking place in Cape Town, 24 took place during the traditional low season between May and September.

Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital's Emergency Centre upgrade “I was so hot; I was so scared and sore! I didn’t realise what was happening.” These are the words of 11-year-old Esona who lives in Worcester with his grandmother and cousins. Esona was rushed to the Emergency Centre of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital from the local hospital in Worcester after his pajamas caught alight from the flames of a candle. Nearly 6 weeks ago, the children were playing outside when the electricity went off. It was getting cold and dark outside, so the children were asked to come inside. The door was left open, so Esona lit the candle on the table and used the light from the candle to guide him to the open door. The draft from the open door caused the flame to latch onto his pajama top and it caught alight, the flames moved quickly. Everybody started screaming and this courageous child remembered his teacher telling him to roll in the sand and he rushed outside to do just that. “I don’t remember much, but I do remember one time waking up at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and seeing my grandmother and family there praying and that made me so happy.” The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital has been a place where countless children have been treated and cured. It has been a place of marvels for the families and caregivers, a mainstay of hope, a place that provides care and reassurance at a time when their world is in turmoil. Like Esona’s family, no-one plans to end up in an emergency unit. But when they do, there is no time to waste and this means making sure that any emergency centre facility is designed to give the best possible care in the shortest space of time.

The core values of the Emergency Centre at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital are to provide the best possible care for children in a family friendly environment. The medical team at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and partners identified key areas that needed to be upgraded and expanded to ensure that children continue to receive the best possible care and that their families are supported while these young patients are receiving emergency care. In future, children with burns injuries like Esona will receive critical care in the burns room before going up to theatre for surgery and at the same time his family will be able to wait in a comfortable waiting area while their child is receiving the care they need. A family friendly environment provides much needed care and support for families as they are going through a very difficult time. The building started will start during the last week of April 2019 and will be completed towards the end of 2021. The aim of the upgrade and expansion of the Emergency Centre is to improve the flow of the patients moving through the unit and ensure that the family are comfortable while they wait for their children to receive lifesaving care. A hundred percent of the donations received will go directly to the project, R41.9 million has been raised to date.

Mont Marie Home to chef Pieter Vlok & his mouth-watering dishes

Driving alongside the picturesque vineyards toward Mont Marie, a relaxed presence fills your every desire toward an evening of non-molecular fine dining, but rather fine dining in real food. Mont Marie, a Restaurant of Distinction was conceived through the passionate drive of the 32 year old Pieter Vlok and the kind support of Whitey Basson who made Pieter’s dream a reality. In support of his passion, Pieter as owner and Executive Chef also has the backup support of his general manager Carmen Schmidt who comes with almost 21 years experience to take the Restaurant to a new level of ambience, service and most of all, an amazing dine-out experience with family and friends. On entering Mont Marie Restaurant you are met by the hospitality of the front of house manager who guides you to the terrace overlooking the splendour of the dam and the beauty of the Blaauwklippen Valley surrounded by the gracious Hottentots Holland Mountains, with the setting sun changing the landscape scenery every few minutes. The interior is well designed and modern styled, with an open plan kitchen where the delightful dishes are prepared. Feeling relocated to another world, Chef Pieter makes his appearance with a word of welcome while we sample homemade bread, poppy seed lavash, hummus with a honey & mustard sauce and garlic emulsion. The dishes on the menu are well selected with a choice of either a two or three course meal. The Seared Tuna starter with sweetcorn salsa, avocado, Asian dressing and crispy leek, melts in your mouth, not to mention the perfectly combination of flavours of the Smoked Rump Salad with greens, baby tomato, coleslaw, croutons and pesto dressing - which stimulates the taste buds.

FINE DINING The Pork Belly as a main course served with roasted vegetables, apple sauce and a soy sauce was out of this world. The medium Beef Sirloin was cooked to perfection with a jus complementing the dish. The Vegetarian dishes are not forgotten and one can indulge in the Falafel served with confit potatoes and coleslaw with Malay mayonnaise. Treat yourself to the Lemon & Poppy seed soufflé with lemon purée, homemade lemon ice cream and crème pâtissière. Should you like something less sweet, the Local Cheese Platter with a selection of local cheeses, preserves, honeycomb and grissini is the perfect way to end off a fabulous day out - washed down with a refreshing glass of Chabivin Brut Rose 2011. Compliments to Pieter Vlok - as an Executive Chef you serve well designed, prepared, and beautifully plated dishes with passion from your kitchen. Mont Marie offers breakfast and lunch Wednesday to Sunday, and dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. The Restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. CONFECTIONARY

Natural homemade olives inspired by Chrisna Many years ago, Chrisna Pepler had to take care of a few buckets of fermenting olives on behalf of her Israeli landlady. This became the stepping stone for Chrisna’s Olives, and today she produces a great variety of high end Olive products. Over many years Chrisna developed her own recipes, going the natural way by using only local olives, cured with natural salt for 10 months, no preservatives and herbs from her own herb garden to create high quality olive products that is different from and superior to the olives available in any of the larger commercial stores. Chrisna’s Olives produces a Signature Range, a Natural Range, a Stuffed Olive Range, and a big range of Pastes as well as olive rubs and cold pressed extra virgin olive oil,. The Signature Range is by far the most popular and include marinated olives to the likes of Garlic and Herb Olives, Olive Medley, Spanish Green Olives, Chili Kalamata Olives, Smoked Olives, Mediterranean Olives, and Roasted Olives. The Natural Range includes Kalamata, Mission, Nocellara, Manzanilla and Sevillano Olives, while the hand Stuffed Olive Range have natural stuffing such as cured lemon rind, pimentos, orange rind, elephant garlic, blue cheese, anchovies and the big mouthful; garlic stuffed olive inside Piquant Peppers. The Range of Pastes consists of; Black Olive Tapenade (with anchovies, capers and garlic), Smoked Olive Paste (made with hickory smoked olives), Mediterranean Olive Paste (with olives, feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes and lots of fresh basil) Moroccan Olive Paste (with cumin and chilli, using the strong flavour of salt cured olives), and Green Olive Pesto (with almonds, lemon rind and rocket), all of which taste absolutely phenomenal as a snack on freshly baked bread. No olive range can be complete without Cold pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil to make the perfect salad dressing. Today Chrisna’s Olives regularly attends high end farmer’s markets in and around Cape Town: (Oranjezicht Farmers Market), Stellenbosch; (Slow Food Market) and the Cape Winelands, where she sells her olives to many happy customers as well as excited newcomers. Entries open for Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge

Photo: George Hunter is a well-known and respected name on the cocktail scene, being owner of Copper Monkey as well as having a number of competition wins behind him, including his current titles of 1st place winner of the Absolut Invite Team Edition 2018 (Global) and 1st place champion of the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge 2018 (SA) - Photo credit: Julia Janse Van Vuuren

The Angostura® Global Cocktail Challenge (AGCC) is a key event for mixologists, bartenders and lovers of spirits worldwide. Given its high profile, the Angostura® Global Cocktail Challenge has proven to be an effective means of increasing international exposure for the House of Angostura’s portfolio, including its iconic bitters (rated the #1 trending and best-selling cocktail bitters in the world by Drinks International), as well as its selection of Premium Rums and Amaro di ANGOSTURA®. The competition also serves to promote the House of Angostura’s role as part of the evolving cocktail culture, while simultaneously strengthening relationships with bars worldwide. Prospective candidates are to apply online via Angostura’s designated website at the preliminary stage. Successful entrants will then compete in the national and regional heats in their respective regions for a chance to reach the grand finals on 23 February 2020 in Trinidad and Tobago. There they will vie for the title of Angostura® Global Cocktail Challenge Champion, USD$10,000 and a two-year contract as Angostura’s® Global Brand Ambassador, representing ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters, ANGOSTURA® orange bitters, Angostura® Rums and Amaro di ANGOSTURA®. The AGCC Finals is an immersive experience into Angostura’s rich history and brand stories, as well as the culture of Trinidad & Tobago. While in Trinidad and Tobago they will be treated to the riches the islands have to offer, including a tour of the Angostura® Distillery and Museum, visits to local pan yards, the chance to “play mas” in full costume on Carnival Tuesday and much more. If you think the prize is unique, you should see the mixes. Last year’s winner, Ray Letoa of New Zealand, bested his fellow nine finalists to take home the crown with his cocktails, an Amaro di ANGOSTURA® cocktail called ‘Deliciousness’ and a rum cocktail comprised of Angostura 1824® and two dashes each of ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters and ANGOSTURA® orange bitters, which he called ‘Old Flame.’ According to head judge Mike Ryan, Mr. Letoa “captured the vibrancy and exuberance of the islands of Trinidad and Tobago and of the House of Angostura®”. The ambassador tours the world’s major cities, influencing other bartenders to experiment and explore products in the Angostura® portfolio. The competition draws on Angostura’s® rich and diverse history, dating back to Dr. Johann Siegert’s first batch of aromatic bitters, which was produced in the city of Angostura in Venezuela. The brand continues to elevate itself to new heights, increasing awareness of ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters, ANGOSTURA® orange bitters and its range of quality rums. Grab a glass, save the date and prepare for the cocktail experience of a lifetime at the Angostura® Global Cocktail Challenge. Benguela Cove winter warmers Hermanus FynArts It is almost time for creatives to turn Hermanus into a spectacle of visual arts. Gracing the gateway to the Walker Bay just 18km before Hermanus, Benguela Cove should be your first stop to embark on this annual food and wine festival. Being an avid art lover and collector herself, the owner of Benguela Cove, Penny Streeter OBE, has followed the career of artist Floris van Zyl whose art is displayed in several venues on the estate. This year Streeter invited him to present a solo exhibition at the tasting room for the duration of Hermanus FynArts that promise to engage the viewer on many levels. The exhibition, Anamalia, will officially be opened on 8th June and run until the 16th of June and can be viewed between 11:00 and 18:00 every day. It explores our animal side, instincts, fears and our survival in shared environments and it highlights how connected we are. Artist walkabouts can be requested for the duration of the exhibition. Art Three Ways: Saturday 15th June: 11:30 – 15:00 What should happen if you invite your pet to dinner? Or if your horse shows up groomed and suited for the occasion? Expect to be surprised and treated to a delightful 5 course dinner paired with awarded wines and riveting art pieces. Join us for this delicious and thought provoking experience of how art becomes alive on your plate, in your glass and on the walls. Only 50 seats are available and tickets are sold at R750pp. This includes a viewing of the art with the artist, complemented by arrival drinks and canapés, followed by a curated lunch paired with art and wine. Winter has announced itself properly with these chilly days, yet igniting the desire for hearty food and wine experiences. Benguela Cove certainly has a few offerings up its sleeve running all the way through winter. First up, Benguela Cove is taking part in two annual celebrations that guests can experience at cellar door: Seven Days of Shiraz and Venison as well as Hermanus FynArts festival. Shiraz and Venison It has become increasingly trendy to make carpaccio from game and venison. With 28 farms participating in the annual Seven Days of Shiraz and Venison festival at their own cellar doors, Benguela Cove will be running its offering from 10 June until 17 June. To celebrate this winter favourite, Chef Annie Badenhorst has hunted down beautiful meats to add an exotic twist to their cool climate Syrah wines: Moody Lagoon Red Blend 2017 paired with Ostrich Carpaccio; Benguela Cove Syrah 2017 paired with Springbok Carpaccio; and the Lighthouse Syrah 2017 paired with Warthog Carpaccio.

@TheWineSamarie – briefings from the wine world Yes, there are people who have dedicated a life to the vine: the propagation thereof, its development and growth, its purpose of sustaining a profitable business, and those who advocates its inclusion to enhance our enjoyment of life. To appreciate it as a cultural elixir, there are also those who chose to study its finest properties to distinguish taste, quality and its compatibility with different foods, elevating its humble origin to something we cannot imagine life without. There is no need to be snobbish about it. The best wine is the wine in your glass, indicative of where you are on your own wine journey. A better wine than that is yet to be discovered with your next experience. Sadly the wine will often be to blame when the combination doesn’t work or if the wine doesn’t tick the presumed boxes, while the real culprit could be our own ignorance. Before turning to heavyweight books and bloggers, learn to discover the following aspects that make wine unique to become conversant in any wine circle. People seem daunted by the choice of wine in supermarkets and it doesn’t make it easier that we as Capetonians are also surrounded by a magnitude of impressive wine farms. Where do you start?

- What are the unique characteristics (aroma and taste) of the specific wine grapes or cultivars like Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay?

A friend once said, “it is uncivilised to eat without consuming wine”. If that is true, wine as a dinner accompaniment preceded the era of skyscrapers, intersections, modern machinery, fast cars, advanced medicine, computers, cell phones, even fancy stemware, and all those glitzy things we believe makes the world go round.

- How does die region affect the above?

Not only was wine a symbol of civilisation – it also symbolises the enjoyment of life, togetherness and companionship. And as simple as it seem next to all these inventions, it never stops evolving. We look to wine journalists, winemakers and connoisseurs to guide us on this vinous road of discovery where in fact we are all fully capable to arm ourselves with a basic sound understanding of different wines by trying out different combinations.

Have fun with reds this winter and be sure to share your experience and discovering.

- How does each of them differ in style? - How do I understand the price difference between two wines made from the same cultivar? - And lastly, how does it pair with certain foods?

REALTY

Get permanent residency

in Cyprus

There are a number of countries in Europe offering permanent residency by buying a property, but investors are cautioned to investigate each programme to ensure they are aware of what the limitations are. Certain countries limit your investment to buying only in SDA’s (Special Designated Areas), some countries have a language requirement and others may insist that you live there for a number of days a year for your residency to remain valid. Cyprus, an English-speaking ex-British colony and full EU currently has THE BEST permanent residency programme available in Europe. It is the only programme in Europe where 3 generations in the same family line all secure permanent residency in 2 months of making application. This includes all dependent children up to age 25, plus both the parents and parents-in-law. A big benefit is that you don’t need to live in Cyprus for the residency to remain valid. The programme is an investment in real estate; and with Cyprus’ positive property growth, demand for long and short-term tenants, this offers a very attractive investment for the short, medium and long term. Protect yourself, your family and your assets from unpredicted events by taking advantage of the opportunity to secure permanent residency in Cyprus. Think of getting permanent residency as guaranteeing your family’s future. An astute offshore property investment that works for you in the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime. In Cyprus investing in the Fast Track permanent residency programme not only makes financial sense, but it will tangibly benefit your immediate family. Can you afford not to take advantage of this while the programme is still open? Contact us for a confidential meeting to discuss how we can help you realise your and you family’s Plan B in Europe.

TRAVEL & TOURISM

THE NEWSPAPER

Midweek flight from Cape Town to St Helena island announced Cape Town Air Access, together with the St Helena Government (SHG) and Airlink, welcomes a new connection between Cape Town and St Helena. The seasonal flight is scheduled weekly on a Tuesday and will operate from 3 December 2019 to 31 March 2020. Bookings are open until late February 2020. Helena Bennett, Director of Tourism for St Helena, said: “St Helena has for many years held a special connection with Cape Town which was once the port of call for the island’s Royal Mail Ship before it was decommissioned in February 2018. For the island to be once again connected with Cape Town provides our tourism industry with this much desired link. Being able to provide our visitors with the option of a two stop holiday where they can explore the magnificent Cape Town and then hop on a flight and spend a few days discovering the many treasures and beauty St Helena has to offer, will be a huge benefit to the island and our stakeholders.” The midweek Cape Town service supplements Airlink’s Saturday service to OR Tambo International Airport and will connect the Western Cape to the South Atlantic island during the peak season. With the opening of the award-winning St Helena airport in 2017, access to island has been made quicker and easier.

St Helena, one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world, has been called ‘the secret of the South Atlantic’. Visitors to the island can expect a destination rich in history, with attractions such as Napoleon’s residence, and encounter an Instagrammer’s paradise with volcanic coastlines, and view the highest number of whale sharks during its annual migration.

Table Mountain Cableway more affordable for locals In a collaboration between the City of Cape Town and Table Mountain Cableway, Cape Town’s own New 7 Wonders of Nature, will now be even more accessible for locals and domestic visitors. The Cableway already offers year-round deals which are tailored to locals. The 3-for-1 Kidz Season was launched on 26 April 2019 and will run until 30 September 2019. Other promotions for locals include the half-price Sunset Special; Birthday

Special; Pensioner Special; the Student Special as well as a year-round access cable card. The Class in the Clouds Programme, where learners pay R45 to experience the cable car ride and to learn about the fauna and flora at the top of the mountain, has hosted over 250 000 learners since its inception in 2001. Cape Town is packed with amazing and affordable things to do and has something for everyone even those on a tight budget.

“We have committed to building an inclusive city and to make our tourism offerings accessible to residents from all communities. I am proud to be a part of this inclusive city, which is listed as one of the most diverse cities in the world. Through the Framework, my focus is to champion the further diversification of our tourism products to continue to drive local demand that makes business sense. The City fully endorses these promotions as it aligns with our objective of making local tourism attractions more accessible to locals, while showcasing the uniqueness of our tourism landscape. South Africa’s major tourist attractions need to encourage domestic tourism through increased accessibility, affordability and local-orientated offerings,”said City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Assets and Facilities Management, Alderman James Vos.

Franschhoek amongst the top 30 travel destinations for millennials With the 2nd half of 2019 fast approaching most millennials make use of this time to plan their next holiday. Whether it’s solo travel or a bucket list once-in-a-lifetime trip, they are chomping at the bit to hop on the next plane (or car) and experience what the world has to offer. Although millennials know what they want they also rely on some guidance, and in doing so travelplanning site müvTravel has made it so much easier for them to plan their next holiday. They have recently released a list of the Top 30 Millennial Travel Destinations for 2019, and Franschhoek is the only listed South African destination. Listed at number 27, Franschhoek shares the spotlight with the likes of Seville (Spain), Utah (USA) and Chiang Mai (Thailand). The list was compiled by analysing the destinations which are most frequently added to their millennial users bucket lists. The data showed millennial travellers seek “memorable and original moments,” as well as “activities that focus on sustainable and personalised local experiences”. Not only is Franschhoek regarded as South Africa’s Culinary Capital as well as one of the country’s premier wine producing regions, but research has shown that it is also one of the preferred travel destinations amongst local and international tourists. The list compiled by müvTravel reaffirms this yet again.

Reasons why you should train with a friend Similar to joining a club, agreeing to exercise with a friend gives you an incentive (other than to exercise) to do something active. Motivating yourself to exercise through these cold months can be tough, so think about buddying up with a friend. It will help change your perspective of working out to something a little more enjoyable and sociable. “Did you know that exercising with a friend gives you an incentive to do something active and it opens up a whole new range of possibilities for motivation?” Fransoa Ebersohn, Brand and Communication Specialist at Zone Fitness Clubs explains. Here are a number of benefits why training with a friend can help you to reach your fitness goals: It makes training more fun - When you train with a friend you will less likely get bored. While training with someone you can also have a great laugh and do some catching up, but most importantly, both of you will also get healthier in the process. This is a win-win situation. Getting out of your comfort zone - Training with a close friend can get you out of your comfort zone. You will more than likely be more willing to try fun fitness classes like Zumba, Yoga or Step, which you possibly would not have tried by yourself. Sticking to your commitment will be much easier when training with a friend. On days that you don’t feel like exercising, your buddy will always be there to support you to do your best. And as exercising becomes routine after a few weeks, you’ll both find it less challenging and will more than likely stick to your commitment.

It strengthens the friendship bond - Spending more time with your friends is excellent for mental health. Spending time together on a regular basis at the gym will help maintain your relationship and will make the bond stronger than it was before. It never hurts having someone you can vent to when needed. For more information visit www.zonefitness.co.za

Get going with the Herbalife24 Sports Range Whether you’re a gentle jogger or an elite athlete, the Herbalife24® sports line has the products you need to help you to prepare, train and recover. As the market’s first 24-hours sports nutrition line, it’s no surprise that more than 190 sporting teams, athletes and events around the world use Herbalife24 products to help them perform at their best. The driving force behind the Herbalife24 range is John Heiss, Ph.D., Sr. Director, Product Marketing, Herbalife. A cross country runner, competitive cyclist and downhill skier, Heiss knows exactly what it takes to meet the nutritional needs of athletes. Herbalife24 have surpassed industry standards of pre-, during- and post-workout nutrition to help you train, recover and perform like never before with all the nutritional support you need as an athlete. This seven-product line is customisable so you can determine your day-to-day needs based on activity levels and training demands.

CR7 Drive (Rapidly fuel your workouts and enhance hydration). Prolong (Carb-protein drink mix with added vitamins for athletes, in line with label claim, for use during prolonged exercise). Every single Herbalife24 product is batch tested for prohibited substances by an independent third party. International football star Cristiano Ronaldo collaborated with Herbalife to create a new sports nutrition product designed to take hydration and performance to the next level. Look at some of the main benefits of the new Herbalife24 product, CR7 Drive. Reveal the Science behind CR7 Drive - During exercise, you lose 0.5 - 2 litres of fluid per hour through sweat. This fluid loss is a combination of water and electrolytes (e.g. sodium, potassium and magnesium). As dehydration leads to poorer aerobic performance and increased perceived effort, replacement of fluid and electrolytes during exercise should be a priority. Research shows that carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions such as CR7 Drive enhance water uptake during exercise, which is why CR7 Drive is an ideal choice during workouts, especially while exercising in the heat. The two main factors that cause fatigue during a workout are depletion of the body’s carbohydrate reserves and dehydration due to loss of water and electrolytes in sweat. This impairs sports performance, especially during endurance events in hot weather and/or at high altitude. Studies show that carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks such as CR7 Drive play a role in maintaining performance during this kind of endurance exercise, and compared to plain water, can help to maintain the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. They can also help to sustain performance at the end of a long and hard training session or race.

Products in the Herbalife24 range include: Formula 1 Sport (Carbohydrate protein drink mix to enhance your daily nutrition). Hydrate (Low kilojoule electrolyte drink).Rebuild Strength (High protein shake with added L-Glutamine and BCAAs for athletes), Rebuild Endurance (Protein and carbohydrate drink mix with added L-Glutamine and L-Carnitine).

Over 75% of the kcals in a serving of CR7 Drive are from quick-absorbing carbohydrates which enter the bloodstream quickly in the form of glucose. Science has shown that consuming these glucose-providing carbs immediately after strenuous exercise can aid recovery of normal muscle function. The beneficial effect is obtained with the consumption of carbohydrates, from all sources, at a total intake of 4g per kg body weight, at doses, within the first 4 hours and no later than 6 hours, following strenuous exercise. GOLD MEDAL FOR KIRSTENBOSCH

SOARS HIS WAY TO SUCCESS

AT CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

The City recently appointed Mfundo Tafeni as the Head of Invasive Species Programme within its Biodiversity Management Department. Tafeni started his career at the City in 2008 as a volunteer at the Wolfgat Nature Reserve where he would assist with the youth holiday programmes. This is also where his vision started of working for the City and of making an impact on the way that the City manages its natural resources. Tafeni was in the process of completing his National Diploma in Nature Conservation at the time. Thereafter he secured a graduate position at the City where he was immediately recognised for his potential, passion and willingness to learn. After working as a field assistant at the Westlake Invasive Species Unit in 2010, Tafeni was appointed as a quality controller in 2011 and in 2012 promoted to Project Manager for Invasive Animals and Natural Resources Management, a role he enjoyed thoroughly over the past seven years. In 2018 Tafeni played a big role in the Kadar Asmal Skills Development Programme where the City provides three years of training to upskill workers so that they are equipped with marketable skills to enter the job market. Tafeni will be coordinating the invasive animal species programme, the natural resource management programmes and the management and implementation of the invasive species control operations. Part of his responsibility will be to ensure that employment opportunities are maximised and optimised for previously disad-

South Africa has shipped containers full of indigenous plants, flowers, handpainted edgings and Ndebele hats from Africa to England for the annual Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show, taking place in London from 21 – 25 May 2019. SANBI Kirstenbosch has won a GOLD medal at the 2019 Chelsea Flower Show, this is the 37th year that SANBI Kirstenbosch will be bringing home gold from this highly anticipated event on the British calendar. The Kirstenbosch Chelsea Flower Show Exhibit has been proudly representing South Africa’s diverse floral kingdom at the Chelsea Flower Show for 44 years. This year’s exhibit was indeed a show-stopper with its cutting edge design featuring a slate mountain, dotted with abstract waterfalls cascading from bright larger-thanlife traditional Ndebele hats, and masses of proteas, arums, restios and fynbos arranged as they occur together on the wild slopes of some of South Africa’s mountains. Leon Kluge, the designer behind Kirstenbosch’s 2019 exhibition titled ‘Mountains of Abundance’ – created a contemporary hand-made three metre high slate mountain, with one side depicting a silhouette of Table Mountain and the other of the Magaliesburg.

vantaged communities through a labour intensive approach to invasive species management; skills development and social upliftment. At the same time, the focus will be to alleviate the impact of invasive species on ecosystem services. “The success that Mfundo has achieved in such a short space of time is inspiring and it’s clear that his chosen career path nurtures both his passion for nature and people. My advice to young learners is that they should always be prepared to learn and surround themselves with good mentors at all times. Young people or aspiring professionals should not be fearful or underestimate their capabilities and should keep the focus on what they want to achieve at all times,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.

According to Kluge, who also designed last year’s gold medal winning display, each plant featured in the exhibit has a story to tell and showcases the phenomenal spectrum of South Africa’s flowers to the world. “In addition to restios and fynbos, we have King Proteas in all the different colours this year – something I am very excited about. There are also rarer kinds of proteas included - such as a small species that lie on the sand and gets pollinated by mice. All the plants have come together to produce a magical showcase of only a fraction of South Africa’s biodiversity.” “The pressure is always on to produce an exhibit that will surpass the previous years. Thankfully, we managed to do exactly that and are extremely proud to be bringing home another gold medal! Special thanks go to everyone involved in the creation of this year’s Kirstenbosch Chelsea Flower Show Exhibit – we have an amazing team,” says Kluge. SANBI’s team in London consists of designer Leon Kluge, Tristan Woudberg and Chris Randlehoff from Leon Kluge Garden Design, dedicated volunteers, and SANBI staff.

CAPE TOWN WINNER IN CITY NATURE CHALLENGE THANKS TO RESIDENTS The City of Cape Town is proud to announce that Cape Town is the official winner of two categories in the 2019 City Nature Challenge. Cape Town came out tops in the categories for making the most observations and recording the most species. This international competition saw over 150 cities from around the world compete to see who could make the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most people. Cape Town has won the most recorded observations and most recorded species categories of the 2019 City Nature Challenge. Together, Cape Town participants were able to record an impressive 53 775 observations and 4 587 species across the city. Runners up in the recorded observations category were La Paz, Bolivia, with 46 931 observations’ and San Diego, USA, with 38 241. In the recorded species category runners up were Hong Kong with 3 596 species; and Houston, USA, with 3 367. “Capetonians really went out and showed the world what incredible biodiversity our city has to offer. Cape Town certainly rose to the challenge, considering that we are entering autumn and there were over 150 cities competing, many of which are in the throes of spring. I want to thank each and every resident and visitor who took the time to explore our pristine natural environment and for capturing the beauty and life they encountered. We’re extremely proud to be hosting a globally recognised and important biodiversity,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt. “Thank you Cape Town, and very well done for putting our city on one of the top spots on the international biodiversity map. I think this challenge has reminded many of our residents how privileged we are to call this beautiful region of the world our home. The City is proud of its more than 20 nature reserves across the metro. I urge residents to explore these nature conservation areas, embrace the natural beauty we have on our doorsteps but often overlook, and to be custodians of our unique environment,” said the City’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.

The competition took place between 26 April - 29 April 2019. Capetonians were encouraged to explore the City’s nature reserves and natural open spaces, and to record all of the local plant and animal species that they spotted over the four days. Participants were required to download the iNaturalist.com app and then had to share their observations by uploading all of their findings on the app. The City coordinated numerous activities during the course of the challenge, among which tours of the reserves with local experts. The reserves were open to those interested in recording their observations of plant and animal life over the four days. Start your child on the coding path There is a lot of talk in South Africa about the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the need for education in the country to start preparing learners for the future world of work from a young age. Unfortunately in South Africa, resources are often lacking and many teachers are not yet equipped to teach coding. However this shouldn’t stop parents from encouraging their children to start with the basics of coding from a young age, an expert says. “As we teach our children to read and speak our mother tongue language so we should start with coding at an early age,” says John Luis, Head of Academics at ADvTECH Schools, a division of South Africa’s largest private education provider. “Parents who are not tech savvy may find this daunting, so the easiest way to start the children off will be to download some apps to their mobile devices which will use games to kick off the coding thought processes. Learning to code is like learning how to speak, read and write in a different language. Children are very good at learning a variety of languages from a young age so teaching them coding will be no different,” he says. Luis says that the importance of preparing children for a technologically-enabled future cannot be overstated. “Technology changes rapidly and our children must be able to adapt, be agile minded and most importantly prepared for the future working world. The 4IR should not be dismissed as a buzzword – it is real, and it is here where our lives will become intertwined with technology, the edges between reality and virtual worlds will blur and we need to ensure our children will be effective workers in this rapidly changing environment.” “This means that in the future world of work, coding will be a fundamental digital skill which our children will need to be literate in much the same way we prepare

Pearson to bolster teaching

and learning through classroom digitalisation Today’s technological advancements are changing expectations and increasing possibilities in education. Students are now not only looking for engagement through textbooks but through the plethora of devices that come with the era of digitisation. The pace of change in education is faster than ever before and with this comes both opportunities and challenges for teachers. Pearson South Africa is the world’s leading learning company that understands these challenges and last year launched MyPedia. The tool is a digital classroom that aims to transform education delivery in schools by integrating all learning and teaching tools in a well-designed and scientific manner. It offers a complete teaching solution, designed to deliver engaging lessons by bringing technology into the classroom, resulting in more engagement and ultimately improved learner performance. Last year the tool was pilot tested at seven schools located throughout the country, 21 teachers and 873 learners were involved in the pilot. Based on the feedback and usability of the solution there were changes implemented and it was launched officially in 2019, there are currently 10 000 users of the MyPedia solution. Through the success of the tool, The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has requested collaboration and implementation of the MyPedia tool in 20 of their schools, 10 high schools, and 10 primary schools. “We want to make a difference to the lives of both student and teacher, whether that be in the classroom, at home doing homework assignments or prepping for the next module.”

our children with language, numeracy and physical skills. Coding is no longer a skill reserved for scientists, engineers and IT geeks.” “Behind this technology, functionality is achieved using code. It is how we communicate with computers, build websites, mobile apps, computer games and instruct robots. The Internet of Things (IoT) is already becoming more integrated into our homes. Smart TVs and watches, automated home management and security are only some of the examples where IoT is already used.” Like mathematics, becoming competent in the language of coding has many advantages beyond the obvious, he says. Internationally coding has long been recognised as a future life skill and is offered as part of the normal primary school curriculum. In South Africa, high schools have had the subject from Grade 10 to 12 as a subject choice (Information Technology) for many years, but it was mostly offered to select learners based on their mathematics marks. Still, only a small percentage of schools have been able to offer the subject as it requires dedicated infrastructure and highly competent teachers. Parents can start by helping their child download some of the various free mobile applications and software (listed below) which help young children to start coding, he says. Scratch (scratch.mit.edu/educators), Alice (www.alice.org), Microsoft Minecraft Education (education.minecraft.net), and Roblox (developer.roblox.com/resources/ education/Resources).

Singing Sensation gets big break for the United States of America Thulani Fesi 26 years old from Cape Town will be heading to the United States of America in July to perform in front of industry professionals namely; Record labels, Agents, Castings, Managers, Producers, and many more. This will take place in Orlando, Florida at the Applause Rising Talent Showcase. This will be Thulani’s opportunity to launch his career on an international platform and become the star he has always dreamt of being. Thulani was an Alcoholic Fetal Syndrome baby and he was placed in a children’s home with a mom and 7 other siblings. His “mom” was told that there was not much hope for his future and that he would probably not attend a mainstream school. He’s always had a great love and passion for music. His mom says it was the only thing that would calm him down as a baby. He took part in music during his school career, and it was a dream come true for him when he was accepted into the Drakensberg Boys Choir and attended it from 2004 to 2008. He had the opportunity to travel around South Africa and traveled overseas to the Netherlands and Austria with them. Thulani now has his Matric and has since studied too.

“It is in the Department of Education’s strategy to introduce and implement digitalised classrooms to help students learn better, faster and more efficiently and for teachers to have free time to attend to students who presents difficulties in learning and this solution is designed to meet this need, says Dr Warren Moollan, Executive Director of Product Development at Pearson South Africa. “Digitisation is transforming education today and students need to be prepared to enter the ever-evolving workforce. It is our priority to empower educators with the right tools to be able to teach effectively and at the same time, give them more time to engage with students and increase interaction,” says Charmaine Pietersen, Head: Curriculum Support, Metro South Education District in Western Cape. “Both students, and teachers’ feedback has been positive, during the pilot stage students mentioned the app is different from any other learning apps and has allowed them to learn at their own pace,” concludes Dr Moollan.

Thulani took a leap of faith and auditioned at the Hyde hotel in June 2018 where he received a callback to perform at the International Arts Talent Showcase in October that same year. He received an invitation from International talent scout Kim Meyers to attend the Applause Rising Talent Showcase in Orlando, Florida. He then underwent training at two bootcamps under the direction of Regional Director Elsubie Verlinden who he speaks fondly of and says she helped sharpen his skills in preparation for his trip. Thulani says he gained a lot of knowledge and skills around his branding as an artist. He was reminded that no matter your circumstances or statistics, you can make your dream a reality if you go out there and make it work for yourself. Thulani’s dream is to share his talent with the world and inspire nations. Not just with his voice but by the power of God inside him and the testimony of his life story. He says with that he hopes people wanting to do the same with their lives will be so motivated that they just go for their dreams no matter the cost. If he can do it so can they. Thualni says he knew he was destined for more and looking back at all his achievements has got him to this point where he is ready to make his mark in the industry.

Cape Town City Ballet’s - AMARANTH

Cape Town City Ballet’s triple bill of AMARANTH is an exciting programme of neo-classical and contemporary classical masterpieces with George Balanchine’s Serenade, Frank Staff‘s Transfigured Night and Christopher L Huggins’ Enemy Behind the Gates. Set to Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings in C, Op. 48. with four movements; Sonatina, Waltz, Russian Dance and Elegy, neo-classical Serenade is one of Balanchine’s most beautiful ballets and a milestone in the history of dance as the first original ballet he created in America. It remains a signature work of the New York City Ballet’s repertory and will be staged for CTCB by Rebecca Hirsch. Honouring South African heritage as part of the programme, CTCB presents Frank Staff‘s Transfigured Night staged by doyenne Veronica Paeper. Set to a sweeping score by Schoenberg, Transfigured Night based on a true story, is intense and dramatic, telling a story of a brother and sister dominated by an older sister. Obsessed with keeping the family together, and unhappy with the arrival of a suiter for the younger sister, she senses that the solidarity of the family is threatened. The older sister weaves the story; an intense love story with intimate duets that are a hallmark of Staff’s choreography.

Following significant popularity, American choreographer Christopher L Huggins returns with his acclaimed Enemy Behind the Gates,a look into the minds of incendiaries - how they live quietly and patiently in the shadows before they strike. A breathtakingly athletic fusion of contemporary ballet and modern movement that is militaristic and percussive in style.

Photo: Sian Atterbury as Nellie Forbush in South Pacific Photo Credit: James Maritz

South Pacific, the hit Broadway musical from Rodgers & Hammerstein, is coming to the Artscape Opera House stage in Cape Town from 20 July - 10 August 2019. The show is produced by G&S, Cape Town’s oldest and most reputable community theatre organisation and is making use of the best creative talents Cape Town has to offer. Each performance will be accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, under the batton of Alastair Cockburn. The directing of the show is under the steady hand of Kyla Thorburn, who has directed much-loved G&S productions like My Fair Lady (2016), The King and I (2008), and Annie (2010). The show will feature sets and costumes by acclaimed designer Michael Mitchell, who is known for his designs for Cape Town Opera. Onstage we can expect great performances. Riaan Hunter and Stephan le Roux are taking on the leading role of Emile de Becque. Both come from classical music backgrounds: Hunter has starred in operas such as Don Giovanni, while Le Roux has been Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Sian Atterbury and Andrea Fourie are cast in the leading role of Nellie Forbush. Last year Atterbury starred as Rose Maybud in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddigore, while Fourie was in Dangerous Obsession with Milnerton Players. Charlene Martin from Kenwyn will be portraying Bloody Mary, a character that is sure to be an audience favourite. The story of the musical revolves around American nurses and sailors stationed on an island in the South Pacific during World War II. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with Emile, a French expat, while Lt. Joseph Cable finds himself in a passionate relationship with Liat, a local islander. As the war against Japan escalates, both Nellie and Joseph have to confront their long-held racial prejudices to save their unconventional relationships. South Pacific features well-known songs, such as Some Enchanted Evening, There’s Nothing Like A Dame, Bali Hai, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair, Cockeyed Optimist, and many others that were immortalised in the 1958 film, starring Rossano Brazzi and Mitzi Gaynor as Emile and Nellie. G&S has recently brought other Rodgers & Hammerstein classics to Cape Town, such as My Fair Lady in 2016 and Oklahoma in 2014. South Pacific is guaranteed to be another entertaining musical highlight at the ArtsCape Opera House. Tickets are available from Computicket
