Vergelegen Named Africa’s Top Winery Vergelegen wine estate in Somerset West is a treasure trove of wine, food, exquisite gardens, historic buildings and sustainable biodiversity. Already loved by locals and international visitors, it is set to enjoy even greater global recognition with the announcement recently that it is the top winery on the African continent.

In the prestigious World’s Best Vineyard 2019 competition, a voting panel from around the globe analysed 1500 wineries from 17 countries. Vergelegen was named the best winery in Africa, and number 34 overall. The top estate in the world is Zuccardi Valle de Uco in Argentina.

The list has been established to raise the profile of wine tourism, and to encourage visitors to explore more of the world’s best wineries, both traditional and emerging producers.

SOUTH AFRICA DOMINATES AS BEST SAFARI PARKS ON THE CONTINENT

The V&A Waterfront is one of the most visited destinations in Africa, attracting 24 million visitors every year. Since January, nearly 900 000 people have made use of the previous bridge, which means more than 200 000 visitors make use of the bridge on a monthly basis.

The original swing bridge was designed and constructed in 1997, but an increase in visitor numbers over the years has led to the need for a bridge which is able to accommodate more foot traffic. The new bridge remains 42 metres in length, but has doubled in width to 4 meters with a raised beam down the centre to encourage a separation in the direction of foot traffic. When required, the bridge can be swung away to allow ships free passage on their journey to the sea.

A detailed analysis of almost 2,400 reviews from safari-goers and African travel experts was carried out to determine the 50 best safari parks on the continent. And while the winner was Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, South Africa had a very strong showing with 14 parks in the top 50 (more than 25% of the top 50 were South African parks).

SafariBookings.com, an online marketplace for African safaris, conducted its annual study to unequivocally determine the 50 best African Safari parks of 2019. Not only did South Africa feature strongly in the top 50, it also had two parks - Mala Mala game Reserve and Sabi Sand Game Reserve - in the top 10.

The reason South Africa has a lot of parks in the top 50 is probably because of the sheer number of protected areas in the country, and the high visitor numbers they receive. The number of parks creates a high level of competition and this means that the wildlife watching experience is generally of a high standard. Currently the country has 2 parks in the top 10 and it will be interesting to see if they can better this result in coming years.

SANParks Extend SA National Parks Week To Include Weekends The inaugural South African National Parks Week took place in 2006 and was aimed at linking the South African national parks system to the global national movement and to also showcase the best of South Africa’s national parks.

South African National Parks will be presenting the 14th annual SA National Parks Week from 8 - 15 September 2019. This year SANParks is pleased to announce that it has extended SA National Parks Week to include weekends, heeding the request from South Africans who don’t have time to visit national parks during the week.

The week grants free access to most of the 21 national parks for day visitors, especially people from the local communities. Free entry excludes Namaqua National Park and Boulders Penguin Colony and the Table Mountain Cableway in Table Mountain National Park.

It should be noted that free access to parks does not in include free access to accommodation facilities and other tourist activities.

Nadal, Federer To Meet In Cape Town In February 2020 Two of the world’s greatest tennis players, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will go head to head in Cape Town to raise funds for the Roger Federer Foundation which will go towards education in Africa.

Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato confirmed the match, which will be hosted at 8pm on 7 February 2020 at the Cape Town Stadium. “We are very excited. We are grateful, happy. Looking at their followers, lots of tennis spectators will follow them down to Cape Town,” Plato told SABC. The Cape Town Stadium, which has a capacity of more than 50,000 spectators, will also host a celebrity/pro doubles match between Federer and Bill Gates, best known as the founder of the Microsoft Corporation, versus Nadal and South African comedian Trevor Noah. As the excitement mounts, the legendary pair are expecting to raise a record amount for charity and achieve one of the highest attendance numbers for a tennis match ever.

“I will play in my mother’s home country against my toughest rival and friend Rafael Nadal. We share not only the love for tennis but also for the good cause of giving children a better start in education and in life. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime moment for my family and I,” said Roger Federer.

Nadal, who is equally excited, said, “Roger and I have shared so many magical moments on and off the court. Travelling with him to Cape Town and playing for the benefit of children is something I am very excited about. It will be my first time in the region with Roger as a tour guide – that will be fun.” Tickets are only expected to go on sale from September this year and no prices have yet been announced, but you can officially register for tickets.

The tickets will be priced to ensure the match is accessible to as many fans as possible. All net proceeds will be benefiting the Roger Federer Foundation’s (RFF) programs in the region. The RFF has been particularly active for many years in South Africa’s Eastern Cape region, where it supports charity projects. Federer personally has been to the Eastern Cape several times to have a look at the foundation’s work first hand. The 37-year-old also has strong relationships with South Africa since his mother, Lynette Federer was born in Johannesburg. Roger Federer, therefore, holds dual citizenship of Switzerland and South Africa.

Mediclinic Moves Into Its New World-Class Stellenbosch Hospital The hospital began operating from its new home from 1 June 2019.

Besides the hospital’s state-of-the-art facilities developed to Mediclinic’s specifications, its design and décor features reflect its unique location in Stellenbosch, and restorative views of the town are revealed through its windows. It is fitting that the building celebrates Stellenbosch and its people; both Mediclinic and Atterbury are good corporate citizens of the town with offices there, and with Mediclinic’s being its headquarters.

The two Mediclinic facilities are operated as one.

Cape Town Next Host City For The Netball World Cup In 2023 Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith represented the City of Cape Town when the International Netball Federation (INF) flag was presented to team South Africa, signalling the start of the journey to 2023.

South Africa was one of the top performers at the 2019 event and is now ranked among the top four Netball nations In the world. In March, Cape Town was announced as the host city for the Netball World Cup in 2023 after a successful inter-governmental bid which included the national and provincial governments as well as Netball South Africa.

Research conducted by Wesgro’s IQ unit, on behalf of the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government, found that the Food and Beverages sector made up almost a third of all the Western Cape’s outward investment into the rest of Africa between 2008 and 2018.

Better, best, blend by Samarie Smith The consumer wine world is forever-changing. People’s tastes are determined by the latest restaurants, trendiest super foods on supermarket shelves, popular food programs on the telly and of course, what is best suited to enjoy with the weather.

We are sometimes oblivious to the fact that vineyards are even more so exposed to the ever-changing face of climate and weather patterns. Small changes in temperature and moisture may have drastic effects on the vineyards that ultimately need to produce the grapes that the winemaker needs to provide a consistent product. The fickleness of nature prodded our predecessors to plant different cultivars on different slopes and soil types as a form of insurance that would later be used to our advantage in producing different styles of wines for different palates.

The art of blending Bottling a single cultivar to shine on its own and to emit all those unique characteristics associated with that particular variety is an art. However, the art of blending these cultivars is also an age-old tradition to combine structure and fruit for the ultimate balancing act of acidity, alcohol, sugar and tannins. This can involve blending different grape varieties and become as intricate as blending different vineyards of the same variety (like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot), different regions (like Walker Bay and Stellenbosch) and maturation vessels (like oak or concrete). Tediously but masterfully, each wine will be shaped to as little as 2% per cultivar to create that aimed style the winemaker has envisioned.

It is imperative to understand that blending wine is no haphazard affair. Each component needs to comply with the above rule that it portrays the best characteristics that the cultivar is known for. Wine blending is a skill that comes with years of experience – understanding the different cultivars but also understanding the terroir where they grow. A label stating 100% Chardonnay can still be a blend from different vineyards on the same estate or across regions that will be indicated in the Wine of Origin status on the label. The winemaker needs to scope for components that will best suit his blend to deliver a consistent style and balanced wine.

In the case of a regional blend, this could, for example, involve adding grapes from a coastal region to add acidity or blending grapes from a region known to provide more richness. However, it goes even deeper into the soil. Grapes used from vineyards planted on different soil types can also make a massive difference to a blend, adding structure and finesse. The age of the vines is also a yardstick for style.

It’s the consumers’ job to journey through various blends to understand the power of two … or five.

Employing over 30 employees, Cape Fish started out as a wholesaler in 2012 before deciding to open the small, yet stylish retail side of the business just over a year ago.

Empowering and upskilling staff who show interest and promise is key to Cape Fish’s employment strategy, an example of which is Chang Hubi who joined the team in September 2017.

Having worked for minimum wage at a big supermarket, Hubi stared out as a bakkie assistant at Cape Fish, helping with deliveries. Not even two years later, he is now Cape Fish’s Chief HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) Manager as well as manager of staff, production and orders. His salary has increased by 122% in the past three years.

“One of the Cape Fish owners, Kurt Hill, took me under his wing when I showed interest in wanting to know more about how fish is prepared for customers. He taught me how to grade the quality of tuna, as well as how to prepare, quantify and present orders to our customers. He also taught me how to professionally and efficiently communicate with customers, as well as imparted skills of how to build relationships in a professional environment,” comments Hubi.

After showing promise in his new role of preparing fish for orders and liaising with customers, Hill offered Hubi the opportunity to complete the HACCP Food Safety Risks Training course. This gives him the skills to utilise a highly regarded management system in which food safety is addressed and audited, and Hubi successfully passed the course to become a certified HACCP Manager for Cape Fish.

“Where I came from to where I am today is such a big difference. My growth at Cape Fish has enabled me to offer my family a better life,” concluded Hubi.

EARTH SCIENCE POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS ON BOARD THE SA AGULHAS II

A team of 14 postgraduate students from Stellenbosch University’s Department of Earth Sciences – and six container laboratories – will be on board the SA Agulhas II when it sets out for the 2019 winter cruise.

The team will have to endure a stormy Southern Ocean, five metres high waves and no sun for most of the trip as they will be sailing as far south as possible.

Dr Susanne Fietz, an environmental geochemist in the SU Department of Earth Sciences, says they are following an interdisciplinary approach to better understand the link between ocean geochemistry and microorganisms such as phytoplankton and bacteria in the ocean: “The new knowledge gained will help us to understand natural and man-made impacts on the marine ecosystem.”

The group consists of two postdoctoral students (Dr Jan-Lukas Menzel and Dr Saumik Samanata), six Phd students (Jean Loock, Ryan Cloete, Ismael Kangueehi, Johan Viljoen, Margaret Ogundare and Asmita Singh), and five MSc students (Tara de Jongh, Raya Stavreva, Zandria Jordaan and Herman Boock). Two international students, Bernhard Wenzel from TU Braunschweig in Germany, and Jennifer Mary Ivanoff from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain, will also be on board.

SANLAM CAPE TOWN MARATHON WORKING ON SUSTAINABILITY The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon aims to make a real impact in key areas with which the world is currently grappling, including climate action, affordable and clean energy, health and wellbeing, as well as peace. Its Run4Change programme, which through a series of initiatives and recent key developments, is addressing these critical areas, is calling on a great number of charities to get involved in this year’s springtime event.

The marathon takes place on Sunday, 15 September 2019.

The Marathon has built up a network of over 50 charities that use the event to leverage change in their respective communities. Two of these are Township Farmers, which creates small-scale organic farming in previously disadvantaged communities, and Greenpop, which plants indigenous trees, gardens and forest gardens, and runs development workshops and environmental festivals. Township Farmers, using the hashtag #runningtree, is raising funds to plant 2019 trees in Khayelitsha schools and surrounding neighbourhoods, while Greenpop, using the hashtag #runfortrees, offers free entrance to the 10km Peace Run/Walk if runners are able to raise R840 – the cost of seven trees.

Aiming to increase last year’s R2,5 million raised for charity by the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon to R3 million, race ambassador and Olympian, Elana Van Zyl Meyer is calling on a greater number of charities to seriously consider the benefits and enormous potential the marathon can offer as a platform to yield moral and financial support for the issues they are tackling.

Environmentally, the Marathon certainly puts its money where its mouth is: it’s developed a programme to reduce or reuse litter, creating zero waste to landfill, conserving water and reducing energy, offsetting carbon, and supporting enterprise development.

Sanlam has contributed meaningfully towards the carbon offsetting programme. The Marathon has had an equally positive effect in the areas of health and wellness, with no fewer than 16 health-focused charities using it to generate much-needed funds. Alongside this is the Western Cape Government’s healthy-lifestyles initiative, a women’s gathering that focuses on issues, trends and solutions related to women’s health in relation to sport, and the Say No to Doping programmes run by UNESCO and Drug Free Sport. The Marathon will this year be hosting the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run, a global relay seeking to inspire the creation of a more peaceful world. It will again support as two official sports-development charities Endurocad, and the Western Province Kids Athletics Development Programme.

The Marathon, which attracted in excess of 23 000 athletes from over 82 countries last year, has won an array of social and environmental awards. In 2017 it was one of the first marathons in the world to win the coveted AIMS Green Award; and in 2018 it won a bronze award at the South African Eco-Logic Awards and was voted as the 2018 Event of the Year by Runners World (RSA). Certified a Climate Neutral Event by the Climate Neutral Group, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has applied for Platinum Label status from the IAAF.

Norval Foundation opens its doors to arts and culture for all on Free First Thursdays In an exciting new SA venture, Norval Foundation is granting free all-day access to art and culture in its gallery spaces and sculpture gardens on every First Thursday of the month, thanks to an annual partnership with Coca Cola Peninsula Beverages. First Thursdays will run for the course of a year and will provide crucial public access to art exhibitions that display the best of SA and African contemporary art.

All over the world, brands are starting to acknowledge the cultural impact and social value of art museums and cultural institutions, realising that they can play a role in the cultural lives of society. By partnering with museums, not only are they investing in the future of arts and culture, but ultimately investing in the lives of their customers.

“We are very excited and honored to follow in global footsteps with this partnership and to have Coca Cola Peninsula Beverages as our sponsor for Free First Thursdays at Norval Foundation. Located in the heart of the Cape Winelands in the Constantia Valley, Norval Foundation is a new center for art cultural expression that is dedicated to the exhibition of art and sculpture that is of a global standard. Afterhours access on First Thursdays will allow for public access to this cultural environment that is closely intertwined with the natural splendor of the Western Cape Fynbos biome.

“We’ve always been big fans of various after-hours museum programmes that make cultural institutions more accessible to the public. Free access is one thing, but it’s also the sociable nature of these events that have a big impact on developing new audiences for the arts. We would love to see more corporate sponsors partner with other cultural institutions to build on the initiative of Free First Thursdays at Norval Foundation,” says Gareth Pearson, co-founder of First Thursdays and Museum Night.
