Heritage Day is a South African public holiday celebrated on 24 September every year. On this day, South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people. Various events are staged throughout the country to commemorate this day. Heritage Day is also celebrated among many South African households with an informal braai, which is also referred to as Braai Day. For more than a decade the National Braai Day initiative has been calling on all South Africans to unite around a fire, share our heritage and proudly wave the South African flag.

The golfing industry, a $US13.4 billion market according to the 2019 World Golf Report, has undergone significant shifts in design thinking and player engagement. Golfing estates and institutions have been looking for intelligent technology platforms that enhance the golfing experience as these have become the definitive marker by which leading clubs are measured. In South Africa, the engineers that developed the most sensitive radio astronomy receiver in the world for the MeerKAT and the Square Kilometre Array, have turned their expertise towards this popular sport, creating a distributed radar system designed to accurately track balls across the range and the field. The solution, Inrange, has already been successfully installed at Greenwich Peninsula Driving Range in London, the busiest range in the country, at the Flying Tee and at the Leadbetter Academy World Headquarters in Orlando, Florida.

Gamification has long been a trending term in the sporting industry. It’s the ability to blend technology and physical sport into a uniquely challenging experience that can enhance the potential of players across all levels. On one hand, gamification is designed to bring in a new market of players, the younger and less entrenched players who want something fun and less serious than how golf has been traditionally presented. Solutions such as Inrange offer a new user experience that courses and driving ranges can use to attract the millennial, experience driven market, allowing them to compete against one another in hitting targets, completing tasks or achieving specific goals. It shifts the dynamic of golf to one that can be enjoyed as a night or day out with friends and that can be enjoyed by players of all ages and skills. Inrange uses ultra-sensitive radar sensors alongside in-app data and insights powered by the technology’s unique algorithm. The Inrange handicap dynamically calculates player performance, and it gives them the information they need to practice with purpose. The app, designed specifically for the golf driving ranges, includes numerous challenges to gamify practice sessions and the ability for each and every player to be scored with the Inrange Range Handicap. With the addictive gamification and progress tracking, the platform is designed to create immersive golfing experiences that bring players back, time and again. Already, market leading clubs such as Greenwich Peninsula Driving Range and Flying Tee in the United States, have implemented the solution with noticeable consumer uptake, and currently Inrange is being installed at the David Leadbetter Academy world headquarters in Orlando, Florida. Alphawave, the South African company behind the highly successful EMSS Antennas, has been involved in high-tech products in the specialised antenna and radar applications market for more than 20 years. Already the company has developed solutions for organisations such as Boeing, DaimlerChrysler and NASA, and continues to develop solutions that lead the way on the global stage. Inrange is a globally successful brand that has already achieved recognition in leading golfing establishments in Europe, the United Kingdom and the USA.

Air Mauritius Celebrates Flying To Cape Town Since 1994 On 20 August 2019 Cape Town Air Access and Air Mauritius hosted a briefing to discuss exciting plans for the airline. Carla Da Silva, Director of Air Mauritius South Africa announced that the airline would be flying daily to Cape Town in 2020. Speakers at the briefing included Minister for Finance & Economic Opportunities, MEC David Maynier, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities, Alderman James Vos, and GM for Cape Town International Airport, Deon Cloete. Did you know? Since inception of the Cape Town Air Access project in 2015, Air Mauritius has carried almost 200 000 passengers between the two destinations. This means that visitors from Mauritius flying into Cape Town have contributed over R400 million to direct tourism spending in the Province. The Western Cape also exported more than R2 billion worth of goods to Mauritius in 2018, a significant increase of 32% compared to 2017. Cape Town Air Access wishes to thank Air Mauritius for its continued commitment to Cape Town, the Western Cape and South Africa. Plant Trees, Save The World! Greenpop Aims To Plant 500 000 Trees By 2025! South African-based environmental organisation, Greenpop, calls for more tree planting action in response to recent studies. South Africa celebrates Arbor month in September each year. It’s a month to focus on tree planting across the nation. Local NGO, Greenpop, is launching their bold new tree planting goal this month in response to the recently released studies showing that tree planting is the best way to mitigate climate change. Greenpop aims to plant 500 000 trees by 2025! This Arbor month, help Greenpop launch this new goal. In the month of September 2019, they want to set their bold new goal in motion and raise 10 000 trees in 30 days. Since 2010, Greenpop has planted trees and worked on environmental projects across sub-Saharan Africa. They have planted just over 115 000 trees in the last 9 years in urban greening, reforestation and conservation agriculture projects. -June Winter 2017.pdf 11:12:02 AMpeople with the planet, engaging communiTheir A5Henri'sAd focus has been on1 2017/05/27 connecting ties and inspiring environmental stewards.
On 28 March 2019, speakers at the General Assembly High-Level Meeting of the United Nations warned that we only have 11 years left to prevent irreversible damage from climate change. In addition, a recent study, published in the journal Science, entitled, The global tree restoration potential, states: “[This research] highlights global tree restoration as our most effective climate change solution to date… Our results highlight the opportunity of climate change mitigation through global tree restoration but also the urgent need for action.” In an article written about the new study by Damian Carrington in The Guardian, he says. “Planting billions of trees across the world is by far the biggest and cheapest way to tackle the climate crisis, according to scientists, who have made the first calculation of how many more trees could be planted without encroaching on crop land or urban areas.” “This new quantitative evaluation shows [forest] restoration isn’t just one of our climate change solutions, it is overwhelmingly the top one,” said Prof Tom Crowther at the Swiss university ETH Zürich, who led the research.

In response to the above news, Greenpop aims to dramatically increase its tree planting over the next 5 years, with a bold new goal of 500 000 trees by 2025. While this number is not large when compared to other organisations globally, Greenpop is committed to a holistic, contextually relevant approach which includes a strong focus on skills development and training for the communities that are the custodians for the trees, and robust monitoring and evaluation. In addition to the obvious benefit of carbon sequestration through mass tree planting, forest restoration has the potential to restore our ecosystems, to improve the integrity of our soil, and to improve our water quality and quantity by supporting the hydrological cycle. The time is now! In July 2019, Prince Charles warned world leaders that they have a mere 18 months to have critical meetings that will collectively determine the global agenda for the coming decade. “It is clear that the time for waiting is over, and the time to take collective action has arrived. We need to put pressure on world leaders to meet emission targets, we need to demand that financial institutions divest from fossil fuels, we need to hold businesses accountable for their impact, and we need to restore ecosystems. Greenpop needs your help. Help propel this mission forward.” For more information visit www.greenpop.org/our-work

A Mushroom? - “A tale to inspire”
“Just a few years ago mushrooms were thought to be non-nutritious. Now, through advanced extraction and analytical technologies, science is revealing that specific fungi are in fact able to treat advanced disease like no other medicine can.”
“In a kingdom of their own, Fungi rule the ecosystem - without fungi life as we know it would not exist. Interestingly, fungi are more closely related to the Animal Kingdom than the Plant Kingdom. What that means, is that we (humans) have more in common with fungi than with plants. Plants need the Sun to create food, but did you know that fungi hunt for food? Plants breathe Carbon Dioxide and expel Oxygen, whereas fungi breathe Oxygen and expel Carbon Dioxide, just as we (humans) do. The list of similarities between fungi and human gene structures are so astounding that you are left to wonder; is this the reason that fungi are so effective in treating human disease?” “In South Africa, mushroom cultivators are producing products that will astound you! You will be surprised to know what is available right on your doorstep! There are companies that sell mushroom grow kits, offer workshops, courses, sell cultivation supplies, and now also offer medicinal mushroom products,” says Craig Fourie, founder of Mushroom Guru. Background South African mushroom cultivators truly hold their own alongside world leading pioneers in this field, and may very well be on the leading edge. One such company is Mushroom Guru (Pty) Ltd. situated in Strand, Western Cape. Mushroom Guru is creating a medicinal mushroom extract, MG-LZ8, that has the potential to change the face of healthcare on a global scale – A tale to inspire!
This “medicinal journey” is of utmost importance to Craig and Nikki, both having lost their mothers to breast cancer. “We would like to bring valuable information on medicinal mushrooms and their effectiveness in targeting disease to as many as possible, information that was not available when our mothers were diagnosed,” Craig continues. In 2014 Nikki finally left a corporate consulting career to join Craig and together they work on “their business of the heart”, sharing their knowledge and touching lives. To date they have trained over 400 people in their weekend mushroom workshops and a further 112 people in the Advanced Fungi Culturing Course. Craig can openly share all his knowledge on gourmet cultivation and has chosen to specialise in growing medicinal mushrooms, thereby not competing with his course graduates in the same market. Products “We cultivate a medicinal mushroom called Reishi, using our own proprietary cultivating and extraction methods, from which a powerful medicinal extract is created.”
Craig and Nikki Fourie, the owners of Mushroom Guru, moved to Somerset West in 2008 from Port Elizabeth. On arriving in Somerset West, Nikki worked in corporate logistics and Craig left his career in mechanical engineering in the automotive industry and started building a new business with the hope that they would both someday work together in the business. Craig knew that any modern business wouldn’t be visible globally without a website and he therefore undertook to design and built the website himself, which he launched in May 2013. Craig’s extensive mechanical engineering and mechanical design background along with his qualification as a Tool Jig & Die Maker, allowed him to put his practical skills and his love for mushrooms to the best use; to build a mushroom company that has a global impact! The business has humble beginnings, starting up in the double garage of Craig and Nikki’s home in Somerset West in 2013, with a mere R56.00 in Craig’s bank account. Craig’s inspiration to start a mushroom business came from his experience using and growing medicinal mushrooms some 25 years ago. The intention behind the business is to teach and inspire people to grow their own food and to learn about and experience the benefits of using medicinal mushrooms.
“These two factors result in a highly effective extract, MG-LZ8, which is the cornerstone for our GanodermaGold™ product range of capsules, tinctures, skin serums and animal products. The MG-LZ8 in GanodermaGold™ products is an exceptionally effective adaptogen and is used for reducing inflammation, boosting the immune system, enhancing cognitive function, regulating the endocrine system, balancing hormones, regulating the blood and reducing anxiety, to name just a few of the benefits. In China and Japan medicinal mushrooms are also widely recognised for their ability to treat advanced diseases like Cancer. The products have attracted attention in USA, Asia and Europe and plans are underway to begin selling and distributing the products abroad,” Craig explains. Mushroom Guru was also recently featured in ‘Nisboere’, a series that featured on niche farming that aired on DSTV channel 147. The series was aimed at creating a platform to expose small scale farmers, with new or niche practises, that started up with relatively little funding. The series takes the form of a competition and each featured company is rated on its commercial viability, strategy implementation and expansion potential. Mushroom Guru was included in the final five and were placed second in the Season 4 competition which aired on 30th July 2019, winning them a 5-day cruise to Mozambique. BRAVE LITTLE PENGUIN ARRIVES TO A NEW HOME IN CAPE TOWN On a cold Monday morning a tiny, fuzzy and tired bundle of love arrived at Cape Town International Airport - a juvenile rockhopper penguin that washed up on the Eastern Cape coast had landed, and was soon to be introduced to its new foreverhome at the Two Oceans Aquarium. This young rockhopper was found by members of the public near East London and underwent initial rehabilitation at the East London Aquarium. Once stabilised, the Two Oceans Aquarium, East London Aquarium and SANCCOB teamed up to get the needed permits to transport this young bird to Cape Town so that it could find a home in the rockhopper penguin colony at the Two Oceans Aquarium.

A RARE BREED OF DOCTOR Dr Dorothy Breed, a veterinarian and urban wildlife specialist in the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department, has always had her focus on nature’s pulse. Dr Breed became a veterinarian because she wanted to contribute to the ‘bigger’ picture. “I was working at a private veterinary practice when I realised that if I wanted to move further in the veterinarian field, I would have to empower myself with education,” Breed said.
It finally made this journey on 28 June 2019, and the very excited duo of Penguin Keeper Shanet Rutgers and Penguin Husbandry Intern Martine Viljoen made their way to the airport to collect this precious cargo. With the young rockhopper collected, the pair transported it to SANCCOB. SANCCOB and the Two Oceans Aquarium have a long history of working together, and their help is always indispensable when it comes to caring for new arrivals at the Aquarium and here, SANCCOB’s excellent team of veterinary staff an volunteers took it upon themselves to fatten up this malnourished little bird, and give it a full panel of health screenings. The young rockhopper spent a month in SANCCOB’s Intensive Care Unit where a bone infection was identified in both of the penguin’s feet. Luckily, treatment was able to begin early and despite having a really odd gait, this rocky is now in excellent health. Excitedly, Shanet and Martine returned to SANCCOB to collect their new “child” and bring it safely to the Aquarium to introduce it to its new penguin (and human) family! “The young rocky needed a name - and we left it to members of the public and our staff to select one. More than 180 suggestions were put forward, and a clear favourite emerged - meet “EL” (short for East London).”
This is an assertion she lives up to, and counting among her credentials are: Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Pretoria 2006, Masters in International Animal Health from the University of Edinburgh 2014 and she is currently in her final year of study towards a PhD in Physiology (Wildlife) at the University of Cape Town. Previously, Dr Breed worked in private veterinary practice in South Africa and the United Kingdom. In 2012, she started her own practice rendering wildlife veterinary services in and around Cape Town. During this time, she dealt with many species including domestic, farm, exotic and wild animals. In 2017, Dr Breed joined the City of Cape Town as a veterinarian and urban wildlife specialist. Dr Breed’s role in the Biodiversity Management Branch is to provide veterinary support and advice for any animal interventions planned or needed in conservation areas. “Working with wildlife and people can be very challenging, but it also keeps working life interesting and very fulfilling when you have positive achievements,” said Dr Breed.
“Young EL is still nervously getting to know the other penguins, although spirits are high and we have no doubt that this bird will soon be the most popular youngster on the beach. EL is already making friends with her new human family, and uses every opportunity to run off and explore the Aquarium.” Northern rockhopper penguins are native to several Sub-Antarctic islands thousands of kilometres from the South African mainland, and it is unlikely that a penguin this young, still with part of its chick “fluff” and not fully coated in waterproof feathers, could have survived the swim. What is more likely, is that this penguin was poached by fishermen nearer to its colony and kept on the boat as entertainment, then thrown overboard when the boat neared South African waters to avoid being fined by the authorities. “However, EL can still have a fulfilling life here at the Two Oceans Aquarium, where she is able to live amongst the largest colony of northern rockhopper penguins in South Africa, be cared for by our team of professionals, loved by thousands of visitors and help contribute to veterinary and biological research. Most importantly, EL can now be an ambassador for the ocean - we hope this story makes you fall in love with the seas and the life they contain just a little bit more.”
Some of her career highlights include: reintroducing eland to Blaauwberg Nature Reserve, rehabilitating a honey badger and successfully releasing it at Bokbaai in 2017 and translocating the City’s bontebok herd to a new site. “It is a rewarding career, but it also has its challenges. For instance, managing wildlife in an urban setting can be difficult due to the different views that people have towards animals. You have to constantly navigate between best practice, science, animal welfare and human interest. Also, wild animals are usually very sick or injured by the time they allow themselves to be caught by humans, and often require humane euthanasia,” said Breed. “However, there are wildlife cases where the situation and the animal’s condition allow you to release it. It is very rewarding to see a wild animal released back into a natural area,” said Breed. A key lesson she learnt during her career is that everything of consequence is worth thrice the effort; anything that is worthwhile and makes a difference requires substantial effort. Working on a wide range of projects with different organisations, liaising with and continuously learning from experts in various fields, keep her motivated in her job. She also gets to deal with a wide range of species, making it exciting.

A FIRST OF IT'S KIND: THE KITCHEN COLLECTIVE COOK - CREATE - COLLABORATE The requests kept coming in were always new and varied, as the space and the team proved adaptable to the needs of the foodies out there. The demand for a blank, professionally equipped kitchen hire space increased, as did the requests to host larger events for up to 100 people, and the team just knew the time was right to expand even further. And so it began, and as happens when something is right, it is seems to flow effortlessly. Kim and Katy have worked tirelessly on this incredibly exciting project. Endless meetings, long to do lists and so much excitement! The perfect 380sqm premises were found, incredibly generous sponsors came on board in assisting us to set up the 3 new kitchen spaces, and it was all systems go and full steam ahead. The result is spectacular! “There is nothing like this in Cape Town yet. ANOTHER SPECIAL LEVY? WHERE`S IT ALL GOING TO END? PROTECT YOUR SECTIONAL TITLE SCHEME FROM HUGE AND UNJUSTIFIED LEVY INCREASES. We are, in what economist’s call, “inflationary times”. This means that the prices of goods and services are subject to increase. The levies which you diligently pay to your sectional title scheme are not exempt from inflationary forces. Levy increases are inevitable. BUT…. “Can your body corporate accurately predict increases or special levies?” Does your levy increase more than inflation? Maintenance is one of the biggest cost items facing body corporates. According to the Sectional Titles Act of 2011, Prescribed Management Rule PMR 22, your scheme must have a 10-year Maintenance Action Plan in place. (MAP) Simply conforming to this legal requirement is very often inaccurate, unrealistic and reactive in nature. A 10-year maintenance action plan, which takes into consideration PREVENTATIVE AND PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE, provides body corporate trustees with critical information at their fingertips to make prudent and effective maintenance decisions. Thus, protecting the scheme's reserve fund from depletion without compromising YOUR property’s value, structural integrity or aesthetic appearance. FYI Candid Home Inspection Services undertake detailed, independMartin Barnard (MBA) is a qualified Home Inspector with SAHITA and InterNACHI and ent inspections, of all structures and common areas to clearly identify 10 years’ experience in the construction industry. BUSINESS HUB LAUNCHES IN STRAND STREET CONCOURSE The Business Hub Helpdesk resolved 95% of the 1 049 service requests from small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) and entrepreneurs during the previous financial year. The Business Hub is located in its new home in the Strand Street Concourse, making it accessible to even more SMMEs and entrepreneurs. “I am very excited to be attending the official opening of the Business Hub’s new home in the heart of the CBD. This walk-in centre will enhance the City’s One-Stop Shop offering by expanding the services offered and reducing administrative barriers. Through this centre, we want to contribute towards a business-friendly environment where we will reduce barriers and other red tape measures. It will ensure that all business support services can be accessed under one roof, driving to position Cape Town as a forward-looking, economically inclusive city,” said the City’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato, during his keynote address.” The Hub is the new home of the Enterprise and Investment Department’s Enterprise Development unit which is doing stellar work to advance the City’s economic agenda. The team assists to grow the economy and job creation by helping small to medium enterprises and entrepreneurs. “The Business Hub is a platform for designing solutions that will make small business more competitive and resilient. We take our commitment to grow the economy serious and we have been working with SMMEs and partner organisations for many years to ensure that this important part of the economy thrives. SMME’s are the lifeblood of cities and the engines that fuel economic growth,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management, Alderman James Vos. Requests for support or guidance has increased from 539 enquiries in 2016, to 1 049 enquiries in 2018/2019. This is an indication that more people are taking their future into their own hands by starting new ventures. Success Story - SMMEs play a vital role in our economy and one person’s story is a testament of the power of SMMEs in our economy,” said Alderman Vos. Glynn Mashonga is one of the success stories and has received assistance from the Business Support Unit. She started her business, Globescope Security Solutions, from her home and as her business grew she moved into an office park. One of the main struggles that Glynnis faced was access to funding. She persevered and attended one of the City’s Smart Supplier Development Programmes, which is run annually by the Business Support unit. Glynnis was coached on how to pitch to clients, especially major corporate clients. She was then given the opportunity to pitch to major corporate clients. The training she received helped her to land more clients and forge new business links. Proof of her success is in the fact that she started with just herself and one technician, and today she employs 21 people. Glynn’s business has a regular stream of work with an established list of blue-chip clients such as IBM, ABSA and UK-based clients. This is a prime example of the impact that government support can have on small business, and in putting the support and systems in place to ensure an environment in which job creation thrives. The Business Hub is centrally located at the Strand Concourse next to the Golden Acre, which many residents pass each day. The team will be on-site from 08:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and can also be contacted on 021 417 4043; the dedicated business support email address business.support@capetown.gov.za. “Sometimes, all that people need is an opportunity and a helping hand, or a word of encouragement and guidance. This is what the Business Hub is offering. I want to say to all entrepreneurs and business owners we are here to support you and grow your businesses,” added Mayor Plato.

The world of aromas
“I get plums … red maraschino cherries … nuances of English leather with a hint of mocha…” And I am getting bored, was my first reaction in my teens when I overheard the wine jargon my parents used. Perpetuated by their friends on Saturdays who would plunge their noses into balloon-shaped glasses … now and again coming up for air with another string of adjectives. The wine I consumed as a student communicated nothing more than grapy deliciousness poured between friends. Little wine whiskers on the corners of my mouth were the only incriminating evidence that I was not at that proposed study group. But an intense interest was sparked when I started to travel the world; when my senses were awakened to new flavours and aromas. Not only did this broaden my perceptions, but the exposure also nudged the memories of more familiar smells that were a part of my world growing up. All of a sudden, smelling the rain coming down on a dirt road in Hungary created a longing with a familiar smell that evoked a sense of nostalgia. There, in a small town outside Budapest, I would remember our July holiday when we visited the Karoo farm. Today, that pleasant smell that accompanies the first rain after a long dry period is called petrichor – often associated with an excellent Sauvignon Blanc. Smell in a nutshell - The day we as human beings developed the ability to walk, we sacrificed an intrinsic ability to smell in return for a better depth of field to become better hunters. Suddenly we didn’t have to depend on our olfactory ability for survival anymore. Centuries later, animals still possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses compared to us having about 6 million. That being said, the culture of food and wine pairing have become a vital sport or form of entertainment despite our shortcomings. When you smell something, the aromas are transmitted by the cranial nerves and olfactory sphere that forms part of the emotional centre of the brain where the smell is processed. Smells are closely associated with memory and the emotions attached to those memories. It is this same frame of reference that is applied when you are tasting wine. Sensation versus perception - Wine 101 requires the basic understanding between sensation and knowledge to add a method to all this aromas madness, or at least to create some platform from which we can form these judgments. Sensation refers to the process of sensing our environment. One becomes aware of the aroma of wine when the molecules floating on the surface of the wine comes into contact with millions of receptor cells. It forms an electric and chemical reaction transmitting a nerve impulse to the brain. The sensation is there for a passive, physiological process that applies to everyone. Perception is the way we interpret these sensations. It is a personal experience and an emotional interpretation of that sensation. It is an active and intellectual process that follows on sensation, requiring higher levels of consciousness. It is connected to memory and images associated with that. Your brain analyses these aromas based on personal experiences. Tasting professionally - Professional wine tasters need a lot of training to add structure and apply a more systematic tasting approach. This training teaches you to find the clues, draw the correct conclusions, and to communicate these quintessential characteristics of a specific wine as objectively and thoroughly as possible. Wine is alive and complex, and the aromas alone can be derived from a combination of grape cultivar, soil, climate, oak regime, and the oxidation that occurs in your glass. But we all need to build a vocabulary of smells and aromas when we cook, travel, dine out, or go for a walk in the mountains. Nature has all these little libraries of smells that can help you in your pursuit to become a good taster. And trust me; it is fun and a continuous learning process. at South Africa’s largest gin bar at Asara Estate, Jean Buckham - owner of The Gin Box, a craft gin club showcasing different SA craft gins, Hanneli van der Merwe oenologist and co-owner of Barker & Quin Mixers, and Tammy Frazer - perfumer and owner of Frazer Parfum. The competition is the largest gin competition in the country and the only dedicated competition for craft gin distillers in South Africa. Commenting on the awards, Roger Jorgensen said: “South African gin distillers are superb when they ace it as they develop their own style and techniques. Given the plethora of wonderful botanicals here it is no wonder that the Cape is the new Gin Capital of the world.” On the future of the gin industry in South Africa he added: “The future is bright and SA can be a global player, it has only just begun. Gin has been around for a long time and due to its versatile nature will not disappear overnight.” “Checkers LiquorShop is proud to partner with the inaugural SA Craft Gin Awards to highlight and celebrate South Africa’s diverse range of world-class gins,” said Jean Marais, Business Manager for Checkers LiquorShop.
Hope takes a new direction One of the pioneers in the South African gin game, Hope Distillery (formerly known as Hope on Hopkins) launched its gins at a time when crafted spirits were a relatively novel and uncommon occurrence on bottle store and supermarket shelves. Ahead of the curve, its founders Leigh Lisk and Lucy Beard started small in 2014 with a niche selection of gins that expressed the zeitgeist of the time - small-batch liquors inspired by botanical ingredients. Lisk and Beard left a corporate life in London behind to return to South Africa and pursue their passion. They quickly made a name for themselves amongst the discerning gin-drinking community and their product started to appear on store shelves and restaurant and bar menus across Cape Town. Having come a long way since that early leap of faith and period of exploration, Hope is now distilling not only its own gin but gin products for other brands, too – including local labels like Musgrave, Bloedlemoen and Clemengold. The distillery has expanded from its gin roots to embrace other spirits, like vodka and agave, and soon, rum. A team of stillmen are steered by Beard - Hope’s dedicated gin and spirit maker, who personally oversees every step of the process. The growth and the evolution of the local industry signaled the need, however, for a reorientation of the original branding. Never one to do things in half measures, the rebranded Hope Distillery celebrates a new visual identity, with the company’s fresh look encapsulating the spirit of the products, and the people who produce them. Distinctive, modern and committed to quality. Hope’s African Botanical Gin and London Dry Gin are both made using a grainbased spirit because of the inherent softness and smoothness that this gives the final result. The company’s Mediterranean Gin is distilled from an aromatic grape base sourced in the Western Cape. Sourcing the right botanicals and tracing their origin is part of the brand’s ongoing pursuit of excellence. Despite its growth and expansion, Hope’s focus is still very much on quality - its products are still made in small batches, the gins are distilled using the traditional one-shot method, and their approach is, to this day, incredibly hands-on. Lisk and Beard also welcome visits to the distillery for direct bottle sales during the week as well as for guided tastings on Saturdays. Hope Distillery’s new-look bottles are available online and through selected retailers.

REALTY
Now is the time for a Plan B in Europe! Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity!
It is very tempting for many South Africans to secure a 2nd citizenship or permanent residency status in another country. The main reason is personal: to assure their family’s future by protecting against political risk and economical instability. Europe is the world’s largest single market & global trading block and is still the preferred investment destination. For either a 2nd citizenship or permanent residency. An EU passport gives you unlimited access to the EU & the UK: you can travel, live, work & study anywhere in the European Economic Area; plus enjoy visa-free travel to many countries. Permanent residency is also appealing because it gives the permit holders the legal right to live in that country without having to go through onerous immigration processes should they wish to make a permanent move. Cyprus, an ex-British colony and full EU member currently has the most attractive 2nd citizenship and permanent residency programmes available. Citizenship is granted in 6 months via Cyprus’ “Citizenship through investment” programme: - It’s the quickest process in Europe; - all dependent children up to age 28 and the parents of the investor qualify; - it’s mainly an investment – not a donation; - the property/ies CAN be rented out; and need to be retained for only 5 years; - citizenship is passed down through descent offering a legacy to future generations.
Permanent residency is granted in 2 months on the “Fast Track” programme. - this is the only programme in Europe where 3 generations in the same family (including both the parents & in-laws) all acquire residency by buying one property! - dependent children up to 25 qualify; - the property can be rented out; - there is no requirement to live in Cyprus; nor be domiciled there for tax.
In Cyprus investing in the “Citizenship through Investment” or the Fast Track residency programme not only makes financial sense, but it will tangibly benefit your family for generations to come. Can you afford not to take advantage of this while the programmes are still open? Cypriot Realty – a proudly South African company in operation for nearly 11 years – can assist you. We are recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative offshore investment specialists, promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for acquiring EU citizenship or permanent residency, property investment, immigration or retirement and starting an EU-based business - we understand investor’s needs.
An astute offshore property investment that works for you in the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime.

PAARL ACKNOWLEDGES WOMEN IN TOURISM The Drakenstein Local Tourism Association (DLTA) celebrated Women’s Month by recognizing women, who play an important role in the local tourism industry. According to Annelize Stroebel, DLTA general manager, tourism remains one of the most significant economic contributors to the region and the sector is powered by some very impressive women. “Tourism is one industry where women are showing their mettle and we thought that Women’s Month presented the ideal platform to pay tribute to some of the female role players, who are making their mark in Paarl. Included in the line-up is Maika Goetze of Cascade Manor, Karike Conradie of Kikka, Hybre van Niekerk of the Paarl Historical Walk and Tours and Tammy Bell from the Grande Roche.” These four women are passionate about Paarl, its historic significance and incredible offerings. Although coming from diverse backgrounds, they are united in their enthusiasm for growing the Boland town as a prime destination. “We need to make sure that South Africans become tourists in their own country and not necessarily dream of holidays in exotic and distant places. When we reflect confidence and excitement about our country, we entice more visitors to come and experience it,” mentions Maika Goetze, owner-manager of the Cascade Manor Country Manor Hotel & Spa. She views their Fair Trade tourism accreditation as one of her greatest accomplishments. Hybre van Niekerk has been fascinated by Paarl’s history from an early age and her walking tours exploring the third oldest town of South Africa are a great drawcard for international visitors. She echoes the need for support from locals as interest for her highly informative guided walks are predominantly from foreign visitors. Karike Conradie from the highly popular Kikka florist and coffee shops admits that it is vital to offer a unique product in a fairly saturated industry. “Many people think this is an easy industry, but you have to be innovative and remain relevant. Since starting this business in 2004, Kikka has become a part of the rich tapestry of Paarl. It is a place to connect and creates a welcoming sense of community.” The women they meet on a daily basis serve as inspiration to their entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to the tourism industry. According to Tammy Bell of the iconic Grande Roche hotel, she is celebrating the crucial role of women in tourism and is convinced that women have a future in this industry. Offering advice to younger women interested in a career in tourism, Tammy says: “Attitude is everything! Work hard and be passionate about what you do.”
Photo: Tammy Bell
These four dynamic women agree on the challenges faced by the industry and raise the crime rate, lack of government support for small businesses and the need for strategic planning around tourism at a national level as key concerns. However, they remain proudly Paarl and seriously invested in the future of tourism in the so-called Pearl of the Cape Winelands.
LA MOTTE MUSEUM INTRODUCES A NEW ART EXHIBITION The La Motte Museum introduces a new art exhibition entitled, Land Rewoven. Presented in collaboration with Barnard Gallery, this new addition to the Franschhoek Valley estate’s acclaimed offering, comprises a considered body of work by MJ Lourens in conversation with selected paintings of JH Pierneef from the La Motte Museum collection. The inspiration for this exhibition lies in recontextualising Pierneef’s well-known oeuvre within a contemporary dialogue.
The exhibition explores the interpretation of land by two South African artists from different generations whose work could broadly be classified within the same genre. Lourens’ expansive land- and cityscapes composed of skies, clouds, trees and industria invite the viewer to join an exchange of ideas surrounding themes of geographical place, memory and identity and to interpret them in relation to Pierneef’s work. Pierneef is celebrated for his depiction of the natural beauty of the Southern African landscape, although his interests also included scenes of domestic architecture, city views and mining scenes. Underscored by the philosophies of Willem van Konijnenburg, Pierneef’s work represents harmony and order in nature through a strict use of linearity and geometry. He believed that the best way to capture the landscape was in emphasising its magnificence and enhancing its monumentality. Lourens’ work, despite elements of visual resemblance, subtly resists the perfect harmony and rationality of the untainted traditional landscape. His practice involves an ongoing process of observing a more urban South African landscape. Concerns about human presence and development are thoughtfully interpreted and indicate an awareness of the activity outside the picture frame – acknowledging a complicated landscape. Art Experience For La Motte’s Tuesday morning Art Experiences, a weekly exhibition walkabout will be presented on an alternating basis by the artist MJ Lourens and La Motte Museum Curator, Elzette de Beer. The Art Experience concludes with a glass of wine from the award-winning Pierneef Collection and a Winelands Cheese Plate from Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant.

BRITISH AIRWAYS TO TRIAL
WHY TIMESHARE RENTALS
British Airways customers will be transported to their own 3D cinema in the skies as the airline exclusively trials a new virtual reality headset in a UK first.
In the past timeshare resorts were for the exclusive use of owners and their families or friends, but not anymore. These sought-after resorts are becoming a popular choice for people holidaying on a budget and wanting peace-of-mind when it comes to quality home-like accommodation with on-site entertainment.
VIRTUAL REALITY ENTERTAINMENT IN THE SKIES
From now until the end of 2019, customers travelling on select flights in First class from London Heathrow to New York JFK will be able to enjoy a selection of awardwinning films, documentaries and travel programmes in 2D, 3D or 360° formats.
OFFER THE BEST HOLIDAYS
The headsets from VR eyewear specialists, SkyLights, allow customers to fully immerse themselves in 3D view regardless of the position they are sat in. The experience even works when they are lying fully flat. British Airways is the first UK airline to trial the technology and has worked with experts to select a range of therapeutic programmes, including guided meditation and sound therapy, specifically designed for customers who have a fear of flying. Sajida Ismail, Head of Inflight Product at British Airways, said: “We are always looking at the latest technology to enhance our customers’ experience on the ground and in the air. Virtual reality has the power to revolutionise in-flight entertainment and we’re really excited to trial these new glasses as they should create a unique and memorable journey for our First class customers.” The AlloSky virtual reality headsets are designed by SkyLights, a former alumni of British Airways’ parent company IAG’s Hangar 51 start-up accelerator programme. Earlier this year, British Airways trialled the technology at Heathrow Terminal 5, giving customers a glimpse of the Club World cabin through virtual reality. 2019 is British Airways’ centenary year. The airline has launched BA 2119: Flight of the Future, a first-of-its-kind exhibition at Saatchi Gallery throughout August, British Airways’ birthday month.
“Timeshare rentals are the hidden gems of the travel industry,” says Alex Bosch, Chief Operating Officer of the Vacation Ownership Association of Southern Africa (VOASA). “You can take a chance on renting a holiday accommodation that is unfamiliar or you can choose a timeshare rental managed by top hospitality brands that are known for their quality vacations and array of amenities.” Bosch explains that these resorts are available to the public when owners are unable to use their holiday and opt to rent it out instead. “Generally, owners will price their timeshare rental based on their annual maintenance fees so that they don’t lose money. This means non-owners can experience all the benefits of a timeshare holiday at an incredibly affordable price. As a result, the timeshare rental market is growing and will continue to do so because it offers a win-win situation for everyone.” While some people primarily book timeshare rentals for their vacations, others are taking advantage of the opportunity to ‘try before they buy’ and get a first-hand experience of shared vacation ownership. Bosch advises that if you develop an affinity with a resort, location or hospitality brand, then it makes more sense in the long term to rather buy than rent.
The exhibition, in collaboration with the Royal College of Art, is based on global research commissioned by British Airways to identify what aviation could look like in the future. It is also showcasing Fly, a virtual reality experience tracing humankind’s relationship to flying from the earliest imaginings of Leonardo da Vinci and his ornithopter, to the Wright Brothers’ success on Kitty Hawk and the first passenger flight to Paris. Users can also experience Concorde, the brand new A350 and the imagined flight of future. British Airways is investing £6.5 billion for its customers over five years, including the installation of the best quality Wi-Fi and power in every aircraft seat, fitting 128 long-haul aircraft with new interiors and taking delivery of 72 new aircrafts. The airline has introduced its Club Suite, a new business class seat with direct aisle access. British Airways is also hosting a range of activities and events throughout the year to explore the future of sustainable aviation fuels and the aviation careers of the future.
In South Africa there are 158 timeshare and vacation ownership properties in the most sought-after locations that cater for all types of holiday preferences - from beach to berg, bush or urban city adventures. These resorts are operated by recognised South African hospitality brands who are also accredited with VOASA - such as Tsogo Sun, Sun International and Legacy Hotels and Resorts as well as exchange companies like RCI, amongst others. “You will feel right at home with features like fully equipped kitchens, living and dining areas, private bedrooms, laundry facilities and the added luxury of balconies and fireplaces. By renting a multi-room timeshare unit, families don’t have to rent multiple hotel rooms and can put those cost savings to better use,” says Bosch. Finding a timeshare to rent is relatively easy thanks to the internet and online bookings. But with holiday rental scams on the rise, Bosch cautions consumers to be vigilant and to weigh up the advantages of dealing with established industry players. “Be wary of paying a private individual by bank transfer, even if you are offered a discounted rate. Trust your instincts as it would be much worse to find the money had been taken and you turned up to no accommodation. It is better to deal with VOASA accredited rental agents.” For more information visit www.voasa.co.za

The annual Hermanus Whale Festival from 27 - 29 September 2019 is a celebration to the return of the southern right whales to the coastal waters of Southern Africa. It is a tribute to the legacy left to the town by Wendy the Whale whose story is about man’s ability to live in harmony with nature as well as people’s ability to come together as communities valuing the environment. All events and activities during the whale festival are focused to create awareness on how to protect the whales and all our marine wildlife who share our coastal waters. The festival takes place in September which is the peak of whale activity in the region. Hermanus was recently voted by The Telegraph as one of the best destinations worldwide for watching marine mammals. Whether from land or boats, with spectacular annual visits from the southern right and humpback whales and enormous pods of dolphins year-round. Every year, southern right whales migrate from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to warmer climates, reaching the South African Whale Coast in June and will stay till early December. These coastal waters will then teem with the giant mammals, mating, calving and rearing their young – and giving whale-watchers spectacular displays of raw power and elegant water acrobatics incredibly close to shore.
The heartbeat of the whale festival, the Eco-Marine Tent, has become the festival’s biggest attraction. Informative and entertaining, with a focused appeal to children, adults and anyone who cares about preserving our ocean wildlife. With its wide range of eco & marine-related environmental exhibitions, the aim of the Eco Marine Tent and the Hermanus Whale Festival is to inspire visitors through informative, colourful, interactive displays, films, music, arts and food and informative talks by marine biologists and experts. From whales to dolphins, sharks to starfish, our oceans provide us with air to breathe, water to drink and food to eat. Visitors get to enjoy the unbelievable sightseeing opportunities while getting clued up on the plight of the endangered creatures in the Eco Marine Tent. The marine giants will most certainly remain the stars of the show, but on land visitors to this seaside town can expect to be equally dazzled by great entertainment and activities, gut-busting eats, quality crafts and fun for kiddies. This year’s programme will once again include land & boat-based whale watching, arts and crafts, a Street Parade, an orchid show and the Whales and Wheels Classic Car Show. Expect to linger for hours inside the Coke Live Music Marquee, and the Old Harbour Music Arena where various local artists will be performing over the three days of the festival. The festivities will include Marine Mammal & Eco Talks, Festival of Whales Street Parade, shop-till-you-drop stalls, Kiddies Whale of a Beach Clean-Up in the Old Harbour and on the Cliff Path, kiddies’ movies and entertainment. The very popular Pirate & Mermaid Treasure Hunt is extended over two days and will once again have lots of giveaway prizes! Everyone who plays wins a prize! Partnership with New York City brings a milliard of economic benefits
“Earlier this week I visited Cape Town International Airport with Cape Town Tourism CEO, Enver Duminy, to view the new branding that forms part of a campaign installation in promoting a partnership between Cape Town and New York City,” says Mayoral Committee Member For Economic Opportunities And Asset Management, Alderman James Vos. The co-marketing agreement between the two global tourism giants is spearheaded by the respective destination marketing companies, Cape Town Tourism, and NYC & Company. The agreement has seen the destinations collaborating by using their respective resources to market each other. Cape Town’s many attractions are displayed on bus shelters and kiosks across New York’s five districts to introduce US locals to the Mother City. Similarly, the Big Apple is highlighted to Capetonians and visitors through mobile information centres, branding on MyCiTi buses, various billboards in the Cape Town CBD, and extensive branding at the Cape Town International Airport. The partnership received an extra boost with the recent announcement of a direct flight between Cape Town and New York. This flight will be introduced later this year. According to Duminy, the objective of this partnership, which started three years ago, was to increase the demand for travel between the two cities and ultimately for a direct flight between Cape Town and New York City. In addition to marketing Cape Town as a tourism destination to the millions of New Yorkers and the millions more who visit the Big Apple, the partnership between Cape Town Tourism and NYC Company has been integral for access to the North American market. The route will assist in attracting foreign direct investment into Cape Town and will be a catalyst for economic growth in the city. We are gearing up for an additional 24 000 inbound passengers from the new direct route from New York which will be serviced by United Airlines. Travellers from the United States will grow by an estimated 20%, and about 900 jobs will be created during the first year. The flight will also contribute to a R421 million boost in tourism spend by 2021.
“During the visit, I was briefed by Deon Cloete, Cape Town International Airport’s General Manager, on the progress of the R7 billion planned upgrades at the airport which will allow new direct international flights connecting Africa to the world. Once completed, the new runway will have the capacity to handle 45 flights per hour.” “I am pleased to announce that the much anticipated first tender T2 Enablement project to the value of R1,5 billion for phase 1 of the project was advertised last week. We expect work to commence early next year.” Cloete confirmed that the Cape Town International Airport is committed to delivering a quality service and hassle-free experience for passengers. He added that the airport is part of an award-winning value chain within the city and that they play an integral role as a key touchpoint in Cape Town. The first direct flight from New York is scheduled to arrive in Cape Town on 16 December.
The provisional plan is to provide three flights per week over the tourism high season in Cape Town, shaving four hours off the current travel time. “The launch of the route by United Airlines is proof of the importance of partnerships between cities. Later this month, we will be hosting a delegation from New York as we extend the partnership for another two years. Given the tremendous economic benefits and with the initial partnership now being accomplished, we are looking forward to announcing what we aim to achieve during the next phase of this partnership.”
