On this day, South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people. Heritage Day is also celebrated among many South African households with an informal braai, which is also referred to as Braai Day. For more than a decade the National Braai Day initiative has been calling on all South Africans to unite around a fire, share our heritage and proudly wave the South African flag.

Air Mauritius Celebrates Flying To Cape Town Since 1994 On 20 August 2019 Cape Town Air Access and Air Mauritius hosted a briefing to discuss exciting plans for the airline. Carla Da Silva, Director of Air Mauritius South Africa announced that the airline would be flying daily to Cape Town in 2020.

Speakers at the briefing included Minister for Finance & Economic Opportunities, MEC David Maynier, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities, Alderman James Vos, and GM for Cape Town International Airport, Deon Cloete.

Did you know? Since inception of the Cape Town Air Access project in 2015, Air Mauritius has carried almost 200 000 passengers between the two destinations.

This means that visitors from Mauritius flying into Cape Town have contributed over R400 million to direct tourism spending in the Province. The Western Cape also exported more than R2 billion worth of goods to Mauritius in 2018, a significant increase of 32% compared to 2017.

Plant Trees, Save The World! Greenpop Aims To Plant 500 000 Trees By 2025!

South African-based environmental organisation, Greenpop, calls for more tree planting action in response to recent studies.

South Africa celebrates Arbor month in September each year. It’s a month to focus on tree planting across the nation. Local NGO, Greenpop, is launching their bold new tree planting goal this month in response to the recently released studies showing that tree planting is the best way to mitigate climate change. Greenpop aims to plant 500 000 trees by 2025!

This Arbor month, help Greenpop launch this new goal. In the month of September 2019, they want to set their bold new goal in motion and raise 10 000 trees in 30 days.

Since 2010, Greenpop has planted trees and worked on environmental projects across sub-Saharan Africa. They have planted just over 115 000 trees in the last 9 years in urban greening, reforestation and conservation agriculture projects.

On 28 March 2019, speakers at the General Assembly High-Level Meeting of the United Nations warned that we only have 11 years left to prevent irreversible damage from climate change.

In addition, a recent study, published in the journal Science, entitled, The global tree restoration potential, states: “[This research] highlights global tree restoration as our most effective climate change solution to date… Our results highlight the opportunity of climate change mitigation through global tree restoration but also the urgent need for action.”

In an article written about the new study by Damian Carrington in The Guardian, he says. “Planting billions of trees across the world is by far the biggest and cheapest way to tackle the climate crisis, according to scientists, who have made the first calculation of how many more trees could be planted without encroaching on crop land or urban areas.”

“This new quantitative evaluation shows [forest] restoration isn’t just one of our climate change solutions, it is overwhelmingly the top one,” said Prof Tom Crowther at the Swiss university ETH Zürich, who led the research.

In response to the above news, Greenpop aims to dramatically increase its tree planting over the next 5 years, with a bold new goal of 500 000 trees by 2025.

A Mushroom? - “A tale to inspire”

In 2014 Nikki finally left a corporate consulting career to join Craig and together they work on “their business of the heart”, sharing their knowledge and touching lives. Craig can openly share all his knowledge on gourmet cultivation and has chosen to specialise in growing medicinal mushrooms, thereby not competing with his course graduates in the same market.

Craig and Nikki Fourie, the owners of Mushroom Guru, moved to Somerset West in 2008 from Port Elizabeth. On arriving in Somerset West, Nikki worked in corporate logistics and Craig left his career in mechanical engineering in the automotive industry and started building a new business with the hope that they would both someday work together in the business.

Craig’s inspiration to start a mushroom business came from his experience using and growing medicinal mushrooms some 25 years ago. The intention behind the business is to teach and inspire people to grow their own food and to learn about and experience the benefits of using medicinal mushrooms.

BRAVE LITTLE PENGUIN ARRIVES TO A NEW HOME IN CAPE TOWN On a cold Monday morning a tiny, fuzzy and tired bundle of love arrived at Cape Town International Airport - a juvenile rockhopper penguin that washed up on the Eastern Cape coast had landed, and was soon to be introduced to its new foreverhome at the Two Oceans Aquarium.

This young rockhopper was found by members of the public near East London and underwent initial rehabilitation at the East London Aquarium. Once stabilised, the Two Oceans Aquarium, East London Aquarium and SANCCOB teamed up to get the needed permits to transport this young bird to Cape Town so that it could find a home in the rockhopper penguin colony at the Two Oceans Aquarium.

A RARE BREED OF DOCTOR Dr Dorothy Breed, a veterinarian and urban wildlife specialist in the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department, has always had her focus on nature’s pulse. Dr Breed became a veterinarian because she wanted to contribute to the ‘bigger’ picture. “I was working at a private veterinary practice when I realised that if I wanted to move further in the veterinarian field, I would have to empower myself with education,” Breed said.

It finally made this journey on 28 June 2019, and the very excited duo of Penguin Keeper Shanet Rutgers and Penguin Husbandry Intern Martine Viljoen made their way to the airport to collect this precious cargo. With the young rockhopper collected, the pair transported it to SANCCOB. SANCCOB and the Two Oceans Aquarium have a long history of working together, and their help is always indispensable when it comes to caring for new arrivals at the Aquarium and here, SANCCOB’s excellent team of veterinary staff an volunteers took it upon themselves to fatten up this malnourished little bird, and give it a full panel of health screenings.

The young rockhopper spent a month in SANCCOB’s Intensive Care Unit where a bone infection was identified in both of the penguin’s feet. Luckily, treatment was able to begin early and despite having a really odd gait, this rocky is now in excellent health. Excitedly, Shanet and Martine returned to SANCCOB to collect their new “child” and bring it safely to the Aquarium to introduce it to its new penguin (and human) family! “The young rocky needed a name - and we left it to members of the public and our staff to select one. More than 180 suggestions were put forward, and a clear favourite emerged - meet “EL” (short for East London).”

This is an assertion she lives up to, and counting among her credentials are: Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Pretoria 2006, Masters in International Animal Health from the University of Edinburgh 2014 and she is currently in her final year of study towards a PhD in Physiology (Wildlife) at the University of Cape Town.

Previously, Dr Breed worked in private veterinary practice in South Africa and the United Kingdom. In 2012, she started her own practice rendering wildlife veterinary services in and around Cape Town.

During this time, she dealt with many species including domestic, farm, exotic and wild animals. In 2017, Dr Breed joined the City of Cape Town as a veterinarian and urban wildlife specialist.

Dr Breed’s role in the Biodiversity Management Branch is to provide veterinary support and advice for any animal interventions planned or needed in conservation areas. “Working with wildlife and people can be very challenging, but it also keeps working life interesting and very fulfilling when you have positive achievements,” said Dr Breed.

“Young EL is still nervously getting to know the other penguins, although spirits are high and we have no doubt that this bird will soon be the most popular youngster on the beach. EL is already making friends with her new human family, and uses every opportunity to run off and explore the Aquarium.”

Northern rockhopper penguins are native to several Sub-Antarctic islands thousands of kilometres from the South African mainland, and it is unlikely that a penguin this young, still with part of its chick “fluff” and not fully coated in waterproof feathers, could have survived the swim. What is more likely, is that this penguin was poached by fishermen nearer to its colony and kept on the boat as entertainment, then thrown overboard when the boat neared South African waters to avoid being fined by the authorities.

Some of her career highlights include: reintroducing eland to Blaauwberg Nature Reserve, rehabilitating a honey badger and successfully releasing it at Bokbaai in 2017 and translocating the City’s bontebok herd to a new site.

“It is a rewarding career, but it also has its challenges. For instance, managing wildlife in an urban setting can be difficult due to the different views that people have towards animals. You have to constantly navigate between best practice, science, animal welfare and human interest. Also, wild animals are usually very sick or injured by the time they allow themselves to be caught by humans, and often require humane euthanasia,” said Breed.

“However, there are wildlife cases where the situation and the animal’s condition allow you to release it. It is very rewarding to see a wild animal released back into a natural area,” said Breed.

A key lesson she learnt during her career is that everything of consequence is worth thrice the effort; anything that is worthwhile and makes a difference requires substantial effort.

Working on a wide range of projects with different organisations, liaising with and continuously learning from experts in various fields, keep her motivated in her job. She also gets to deal with a wide range of species, making it exciting.

BUSINESS HUB LAUNCHES IN STRAND STREET CONCOURSE The Business Hub Helpdesk resolved 95% of the 1 049 service requests from small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) and entrepreneurs during the previous financial year. The Business Hub is located in its new home in the Strand Street Concourse, making it accessible to even more SMMEs and entrepreneurs.

This walk-in centre will enhance the City’s One-Stop Shop offering by expanding the services offered and reducing administrative barriers. Proof of her success is in the fact that she started with just herself and one technician, and today she employs 21 people. Glynn’s business has a regular stream of work with an established list of blue-chip clients such as IBM, ABSA and UK-based clients.

This is a prime example of the impact that government support can have on small business, and in putting the support and systems in place to ensure an environment in which job creation thrives. SA Craft Gin Awards 2019 Announced The results of the inaugural South African Craft Gin Awards, presented by Checkers LiquorShop, were announced at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel on 21 August 2019, acknowledging and celebrating the finest craft gins that our country has to offer. Twenty-six locally distilled craft gins received the highest accolade of Double Gold awards from an entry of 110 gins from over 50 distilleries all over South Africa.

The Top 10 Double Gold award-winning gins are: A Mari Atlantic Ocean and A Mari Indian Ocean gins, Copper Republic African Dry and Copper Republic Rooibos & Grapefruit gins, Die Dröe Rooinek Dry Gin, Flowstone Bushwillow Gin, Geometric Classic Cape Dry Gin, Ginologist Spice Gin, Harmony Aloe Ferox Gin, Indlovu Gin - Elephant Dung Gin, Jin Gin Olive & Honey and Jin Gin Tomato & Sweet Piquante Pepper gins, and Knut Hansen Dry Gin - a South African version of the German original.

The world of aromas

“I get plums … red maraschino cherries … nuances of English leather with a hint of mocha…” And I am getting bored, was my first reaction in my teens when I overheard the wine jargon my parents used. Perpetuated by their friends on Saturdays who would plunge their noses into balloon-shaped glasses … now and again coming up for air with another string of adjectives.

The wine I consumed as a student communicated nothing more than grapy deliciousness poured between friends. Little wine whiskers on the corners of my mouth were the only incriminating evidence that I was not at that proposed study group.

But an intense interest was sparked when I started to travel the world; when my senses were awakened to new flavours and aromas. Not only did this broaden my perceptions, but the exposure also nudged the memories of more familiar smells that were a part of my world growing up. All of a sudden, smelling the rain coming down on a dirt road in Hungary created a longing with a familiar smell that evoked a sense of nostalgia. There, in a small town outside Budapest, I would remember our July holiday when we visited the Karoo farm. Today, that pleasant smell that accompanies the first rain after a long dry period is called petrichor – often associated with an excellent Sauvignon Blanc.

Smell in a nutshell - The day we as human beings developed the ability to walk, we sacrificed an intrinsic ability to smell in return for a better depth of field to become better hunters. Suddenly we didn’t have to depend on our olfactory ability for survival anymore. Centuries later, animals still possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses compared to us having about 6 million.

That being said, the culture of food and wine pairing have become a vital sport or form of entertainment despite our shortcomings. When you smell something, the aromas are transmitted by the cranial nerves and olfactory sphere that forms part of the emotional centre of the brain where the smell is processed. Smells are closely associated with memory and the emotions attached to those memories. It is this same frame of reference that is applied when you are tasting wine.

Sensation versus perception - Wine 101 requires the basic understanding between sensation and knowledge to add a method to all this aromas madness, or at least to create some platform from which we can form these judgments.

Sensation refers to the process of sensing our environment. One becomes aware of the aroma of wine when the molecules floating on the surface of the wine comes into contact with millions of receptor cells. It forms an electric and chemical reaction transmitting a nerve impulse to the brain. The sensation is there for a passive, physiological process that applies to everyone.

Perception is the way we interpret these sensations. It is a personal experience and an emotional interpretation of that sensation. It is an active and intellectual process that follows on sensation, requiring higher levels of consciousness. It is connected to memory and images associated with that. Your brain analyses these aromas based on personal experiences.

Tasting professionally - Professional wine tasters need a lot of training to add structure and apply a more systematic tasting approach. This training teaches you to find the clues, draw the correct conclusions, and to communicate these quintessential characteristics of a specific wine as objectively and thoroughly as possible.

Wine is alive and complex, and the aromas alone can be derived from a combination of grape cultivar, soil, climate, oak regime, and the oxidation that occurs in your glass.

But we all need to build a vocabulary of smells and aromas when we cook, travel, dine out, or go for a walk in the mountains. Nature has all these little libraries of smells that can help you in your pursuit to become a good taster. And trust me; it is fun and a continuous learning process.

Hope takes a new direction One of the pioneers in the South African gin game, Hope Distillery (formerly known as Hope on Hopkins) launched its gins at a time when crafted spirits were a relatively novel and uncommon occurrence on bottle store and supermarket shelves.

Never one to do things in half measures, the rebranded Hope Distillery celebrates a new visual identity, with the company’s fresh look encapsulating the spirit of the products, and the people who produce them. PAARL ACKNOWLEDGES WOMEN IN TOURISM The Drakenstein Local Tourism Association (DLTA) celebrated Women’s Month by recognizing women, who play an important role in the local tourism industry.

Karike Conradie from the highly popular Kikka florist and coffee shops admits that it is vital to offer a unique product in a fairly saturated industry. “Many people think this is an easy industry, but you have to be innovative and remain relevant. Since starting this business in 2004, Kikka has become a part of the rich tapestry of Paarl. It is a place to connect and creates a welcoming sense of community.”

The women they meet on a daily basis serve as inspiration to their entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to the tourism industry. According to Tammy Bell of the iconic Grande Roche hotel, she is celebrating the crucial role of women in tourism and is convinced that women have a future in this industry. Offering advice to younger women interested in a career in tourism, Tammy says: “Attitude is everything! Work hard and be passionate about what you do.”

These four dynamic women agree on the challenges faced by the industry and raise the crime rate, lack of government support for small businesses and the need for strategic planning around tourism at a national level as key concerns. However, they remain proudly Paarl and seriously invested in the future of tourism in the so-called Pearl of the Cape Winelands.

LA MOTTE MUSEUM INTRODUCES A NEW ART EXHIBITION The La Motte Museum introduces a new art exhibition entitled, Land Rewoven.

Presented in collaboration with Barnard Gallery, this new addition to the Franschhoek Valley estate’s acclaimed offering, comprises a considered body of work

by MJ Lourens in conversation with selected paintings of JH Pierneef from the La Motte Museum collection. The inspiration for this exhibition lies in recontextualising Pierneef’s well-known oeuvre within a contemporary dialogue.

The exhibition explores the interpretation of land by two South African artists from different generations whose work could broadly be classified within the same genre.

Lourens’ expansive land- and cityscapes composed of skies, clouds, trees and industria invite the viewer to join an exchange of ideas surrounding themes of geographical place, memory and identity and to interpret them in relation to Pierneef’s work.

Pierneef is celebrated for his depiction of the natural beauty of the Southern African landscape, although his interests also included scenes of domestic architecture, city views and mining scenes. Underscored by the philosophies of Willem van Konijnenburg, Pierneef’s work represents harmony and order in nature through a strict use of linearity and geometry. He believed that the best way to capture the landscape was in emphasising its magnificence and enhancing its monumentality.

Lourens’ work, despite elements of visual resemblance, subtly resists the perfect harmony and rationality of the untainted traditional landscape. His practice involves an ongoing process of observing a more urban South African landscape.

Concerns about human presence and development are thoughtfully interpreted and indicate an awareness of the activity outside the picture frame – acknowledging a complicated landscape.

Art Experience For La Motte’s Tuesday morning Art Experiences, a weekly exhibition walkabout will be presented on an alternating basis by the artist MJ Lourens and La Motte Museum Curator, Elzette de Beer. The Art Experience concludes with a glass of wine from the award-winning Pierneef Collection and a Winelands Cheese Plate from Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant.

WHY TIMESHARE RENTALS

British Airways customers will be transported to their own 3D cinema in the skies as the airline exclusively trials a new virtual reality headset in a UK first.

In the past timeshare resorts were for the exclusive use of owners and their families or friends, but not anymore. These sought-after resorts are becoming a popular choice for people holidaying on a budget and wanting peace-of-mind when it comes to quality home-like accommodation with on-site entertainment.

VIRTUAL REALITY ENTERTAINMENT IN THE SKIES

From now until the end of 2019, customers travelling on select flights in First class from London Heathrow to New York JFK will be able to enjoy a selection of awardwinning films, documentaries and travel programmes in 2D, 3D or 360° formats.

The headsets from VR eyewear specialists, SkyLights, allow customers to fully immerse themselves in 3D view regardless of the position they are sat in. The experience even works when they are lying fully flat.

British Airways is the first UK airline to trial the technology and has worked with experts to select a range of therapeutic programmes, including guided meditation and sound therapy, specifically designed for customers who have a fear of flying.

Sajida Ismail, Head of Inflight Product at British Airways, said: “We are always looking at the latest technology to enhance our customers’ experience on the ground and in the air. Virtual reality has the power to revolutionise in-flight entertainment and we’re really excited to trial these new glasses as they should create a unique and memorable journey for our First class customers.”

The AlloSky virtual reality headsets are designed by SkyLights, a former alumni of British Airways’ parent company IAG’s Hangar 51 start-up accelerator programme.

Earlier this year, British Airways trialled the technology at Heathrow Terminal 5, giving customers a glimpse of the Club World cabin through virtual reality.

2019 is British Airways’ centenary year. The airline has launched BA 2119: Flight of the Future, a first-of-its-kind exhibition at Saatchi Gallery throughout August, British Airways’ birthday month.

“Timeshare rentals are the hidden gems of the travel industry,” says Alex Bosch, Chief Operating Officer of the Vacation Ownership Association of Southern Africa (VOASA). “You can take a chance on renting a holiday accommodation that is unfamiliar or you can choose a timeshare rental managed by top hospitality brands that are known for their quality vacations and array of amenities.”

Bosch explains that these resorts are available to the public when owners are unable to use their holiday and opt to rent it out instead. “Generally, owners will price their timeshare rental based on their annual maintenance fees so that they don’t lose money. This means non-owners can experience all the benefits of a timeshare holiday at an incredibly affordable price. As a result, the timeshare rental market is growing and will continue to do so because it offers a win-win situation for everyone.”

While some people primarily book timeshare rentals for their vacations, others are taking advantage of the opportunity to ‘try before they buy’ and get a first-hand experience of shared vacation ownership. Bosch advises that if you develop an affinity with a resort, location or hospitality brand, then it makes more sense in the long term to rather buy than rent.

The exhibition, in collaboration with the Royal College of Art, is based on global research commissioned by British Airways to identify what aviation could look like in the future.

It is also showcasing Fly, a virtual reality experience tracing humankind’s relationship to flying from the earliest imaginings of Leonardo da Vinci and his ornithopter, to the Wright Brothers’ success on Kitty Hawk and the first passenger flight to Paris.

Users can also experience Concorde, the brand new A350 and the imagined flight of future.

British Airways is investing £6.5 billion for its customers over five years, including the installation of the best quality Wi-Fi and power in every aircraft seat, fitting 128 long-haul aircraft with new interiors and taking delivery of 72 new aircrafts. The airline has introduced its Club Suite, a new business class seat with direct aisle access.

British Airways is also hosting a range of activities and events throughout the year to explore the future of sustainable aviation fuels and the aviation careers of the future.

In South Africa there are 158 timeshare and vacation ownership properties in the most sought-after locations that cater for all types of holiday preferences - from beach to berg, bush or urban city adventures. These resorts are operated by recognised South African hospitality brands who are also accredited with VOASA - such as Tsogo Sun, Sun International and Legacy Hotels and Resorts as well as exchange companies like RCI, amongst others.

“You will feel right at home with features like fully equipped kitchens, living and dining areas, private bedrooms, laundry facilities and the added luxury of balconies and fireplaces. By renting a multi-room timeshare unit, families don’t have to rent multiple hotel rooms and can put those cost savings to better use,” says Bosch.

Finding a timeshare to rent is relatively easy thanks to the internet and online bookings. But with holiday rental scams on the rise, Bosch cautions consumers to be vigilant and to weigh up the advantages of dealing with established industry players.

“Be wary of paying a private individual by bank transfer, even if you are offered a discounted rate. Trust your instincts as it would be much worse to find the money had been taken and you turned up to no accommodation. It is better to deal with VOASA accredited rental agents.”

Partnership with New York City brings a milliard of economic benefits

“Earlier this week I visited Cape Town International Airport with Cape Town Tourism CEO, Enver Duminy, to view the new branding that forms part of a campaign installation in promoting a partnership between Cape Town and New York City,” says Mayoral Committee Member For Economic Opportunities And Asset Management, Alderman James Vos. The co-marketing agreement between the two global tourism giants is spearheaded by the respective destination marketing companies, Cape Town Tourism, and NYC & Company. The agreement has seen the destinations collaborating by using their respective resources to market each other. Cape Town’s many attractions are displayed on bus shelters and kiosks across New York’s five districts to introduce US locals to the Mother City. Similarly, the Big Apple is highlighted to Capetonians and visitors through mobile information centres, branding on MyCiTi buses, various billboards in the Cape Town CBD, and extensive branding at the Cape Town International Airport.

The partnership received an extra boost with the recent announcement of a direct flight between Cape Town and New York. This flight will be introduced later this year.

According to Duminy, the objective of this partnership, which started three years ago, was to increase the demand for travel between the two cities and ultimately for a direct flight between Cape Town and New York City.

In addition to marketing Cape Town as a tourism destination to the millions of New Yorkers and the millions more who visit the Big Apple, the partnership between Cape Town Tourism and NYC Company has been integral for access to the North American market. The route will assist in attracting foreign direct investment into Cape Town and will be a catalyst for economic growth in the city. We are gearing up for an additional 24 000 inbound passengers from the new direct route from New York which will be serviced by United Airlines. Travellers from the United States will grow by an estimated 20%, and about 900 jobs will be created during the first year. The flight will also contribute to a R421 million boost in tourism spend by 2021.

“During the visit, I was briefed by Deon Cloete, Cape Town International Airport’s General Manager, on the progress of the R7 billion planned upgrades at the airport which will allow new direct international flights connecting Africa to the world. Once completed, the new runway will have the capacity to handle 45 flights per hour.”

“I am pleased to announce that the much anticipated first tender T2 Enablement project to the value of R1,5 billion for phase 1 of the project was advertised last week. We expect work to commence early next year.”

Cloete confirmed that the Cape Town International Airport is committed to delivering a quality service and hassle-free experience for passengers. He added that the airport is part of an award-winning value chain within the city and that they play an integral role as a key touchpoint in Cape Town. The first direct flight from New York is scheduled to arrive in Cape Town on 16 December.

The provisional plan is to provide three flights per week over the tourism high season in Cape Town, shaving four hours off the current travel time.

“The launch of the route by United Airlines is proof of the importance of partnerships between cities. Later this month, we will be hosting a delegation from New York as we extend the partnership for another two years. Given the tremendous economic benefits and with the initial partnership now being accomplished, we are looking forward to announcing what we aim to achieve during the next phase of this partnership.”
