Table Mountain Aerial Cableway turned 90 in October. A lot has changed since that first trip up the mountain on 4 October 1929.

Remy Kloos On Track To Be

Before 1929, the only way up was to hike: a feat not undertaken by too many.

By the 1870s, plans were put forward to build a rack railway to the top, but the First Anglo-Boer War halted work on that.

Remy Kloos is a 31-year-old South African woman who is on track to be the youngest African to complete the Seven Summit Challenge. She is also aiming for another first – to be the first African to ever complete a double summit – reaching the top of both Mount Everest and the top of Mount Lhotse within 24 hours, the highest and fourth highest mountains in the world.

Another mock-charge came in 1912, when an engineer had been commissioned to build a funicular up the mountain.

To date this Capetonian high-altitude mountaineer has summited four of the seven mountains that make up the Seven Summits Challenge - Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Aconcagua in South America, Mount Elbrus in Europe and Mount Denali in North America.

This plan was again thwarted by the outbreak of war: this time, World War 1.

In October Kloos climbed the highest peak in Oceania, Carstensz Pyramid. She is aiming to finish the Seven Summits in 2020 by climbing Mount Everest in Nepal in April and Vison Massif in Antarctica in December.

“Although I had recovered from my depression, my battles with anxiety remained all consuming. I existed like this for years, but the turning point began towards the end of 2016 when I found myself struggling to cope. In a search to gain some perspective, I made the decision to take myself to Tanzania and climb the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro. On the 1st of January 2017 I was standing on the Roof of Africa and I felt an electric energy pulse through my entire body. In that moment, I realised I had found a deep and soulful connection to the mountains, and to something so much bigger than me. I returned home and 10 months later I found the courage to resign from my great corporate job in Johannesburg, and I took all my savings and decided to climb the highest mountains around the world and tackle my anxiety head on.”

This is not uncommon on such a physical and more technical climb with only a 40% chance of reaching the summit. Recounting some of the biggest challenges she encountered climbing Denali, Kloos says that the mountain tested her beyond anything she thought she was physically and mentally capable of.

The people have spoken – South Africa’s favourite eateries in the Western Cape were announced at the 2019 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries in Cape Town recently.

These great restaurants were voted for by the public and vetted by Eat Out professional critics. Public ratings for restaurants in each category, taken from reviews on the Eat Out app and website were tallied with scores from Eat Out in a 50-50 balance.

Not only is a review a vote for a favourite restaurant, it helps feed a hungry child: Eat Out pledges a meal through Rise Against Hunger for every review it receives.

To date, Eat Out has helped feed over 13 500 children.

A higher purpose - But Kloos doesn’t just climb the highest mountains in the world for her own fulfilment. She is committed to giving back and launched the #JustClimb initiative last year to raise funds for the Dlala Nje Foundation based in Johannesburg. So far, she has raised close to R400k, which has gone towards the expansion and renovation of their children’s community centre. She also recently partnered with the Sunflower Fund for the remainder of her climbs.

Benguela Collection Brings Home Michelin Star And Veritas Gold Good things come in threes and it has certainly been a triumphant year for the Benguela Collection – fulfilled from inspiring woman-led business leadership to hospitality and award-winning wines.

The owner Penny Streeter OBE received the Business Woman of the Year Award 2019 at the South African Chamber of Commerce in London. SA chef wins Michelin star - Jean Delport became the second South African chef, after Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, to win a Michelin star for Restaurant Interlude at the UK and Ireland 2020 Michelin Guide Awards. This restaurant is situated at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens near Horsham, West Sussex, and forms a part of the Benguela Collection. Open for less than a year, the restaurant’s tasting menu is inspired by the Grade 1 Listed woodlands gardens with ingredients foraged or grown on the estate. Other produce is sourced from selected local farms.

Delport’s culinary career led him to a garden of possibilities: “A kitchen is like a well-oiled machine – every cog plays a role to make everything seem effortless. Elizabeth Triegaardt Receives Highest Honorary Award Bestowed On An RAD Member The fifth annual Events Incubation Conference will be taking place in Paarl on 14 November 2019 with the aim of empowering local event organisers to grow the sector in the Cape Winelands District and the Western Cape.

Annually the Western Cape plays host to numerous events ranging from sport, leisure, business, culinary and lifestyle, amongst others. The positive impact these events bring to the Province have been recognised and the Integrated Events Strategy identifies key projects to grow the sector over the next 15 years.

As part of this, the Western Cape Government looks to support prospective public events in the Province by inviting event organisers to submit proposals to stand in line to win R 50 000.00 towards hosting their event. The competition calls for creative and exciting ideas which could stimulate the growth of the event and in turn increase positive socio-economic and environmental impacts within the host town.

The Capacitation and Skills Programme stems from the Integrated Events Strategy for Cape Town and the Western Cape. It facilitates projects aimed at event organisers focusing on capacitation, research and impact assessments and include; an annual Events Incubation Conference, standardising event impact assessment methodologies, facilitating on-site/one-on-one learning opportunities between emerging and established event organisers and the Masterclass series.

All of these projects address the so-called ‘softer end’ of hosting events but is integral in gaining a better understanding of the sector. Government’s efforts go beyond just financial support as it also looks at addressing challenges, celebrating successes and creating a conducive environment for the events sector to thrive.

The Events Incubation Conference is an annual event bringing together event specialists from around the world to share and learn from each other on a one-onone basis.

Elizabeth Triegaardt is only the 9th South African to receive this award in the 100 years of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) existence. She began dancing at aged 3, matriculated at Hyde Park High School in Johannesburg and graduated from the University of Cape Town, with a Bachelor of Science degree in pure mathematics in 1966. That same year she was awarded the Solo Seal from the Royal Academy of Dance.

In 1967, Triegaardt joined CAPAB Ballet as a Principal Dancer and in 1971 she also became the Ballet Mistress. She danced most of the leading roles in the company’s repertoire, considering her best roles to have been the Elder Sister in Frank Staff’s Transfigured Night, the Sphinx in Paeper’s Drie Diere, the Fairy Godmother in Paeper’s Cinderella and the Black Swan in Labis’s Swan Lake. She retired as a dancer in 1990, aged 44.

In1986, while still performing with CAPAB Ballet, Triegaardt was appointed Director of the UCT Ballet School. In 1997 the degree program offered under her aegis was the first one recognized in South Africa, with majors in classical ballet, contemporary and African dance. In 2007 she retired from her post as Head of the UCT Dance Department and in 2011 retired from UCT as an Emeritus AssociateProfessor.

From 1997 to 2018, as the Honorary Executive Director of the Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB), (Chairman from 1997 to 2004) she kept the CTCB afloat despite dwindling state funding, clearing all its debts and sometimes paying dancers’ salaries out of her own pocket.

She was an effective advocate for preserving the classical repertoire, while simultaneously encouraging the work of South African choreographers. In 21 years she produced David Poole’s Giselle,The Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia and The Firebird, Attilio Labis’s Swan Lake, Viktor Vynonen’s The Nutcracker, Hans Brenaa’s La Sylphide, Cecily Robinson’s Les Sylphides and Veronica Paeper’s Carmen and Cinderella on countless occasions in the Artscape Theatre Centre, at Maynardville and at the NAF in Makhana. She also acted as

Ballet Mistress for many of the neo-classical productions performed by the CTCB during this time, such as Andre Prokovsky’s Zhivago and Anna Karenina, Rudi van Dantzig’s Four Last Songs, Ashley Killar’s Towards Illusion, Liane Lurie’s Don Quixote and Marc Goldberg’s The Vortex After 23 years she continues to host a weekly program on Fine Music Radio, called Invitation to the Dance. Awards received include the Nederburg Prize (1975), a Vocational Service Award from the Rotary Club of Cape Town (2001), a Khula Arts Award – Dance (2004) and three awards from the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (2003, 2009, 2017) for her outstanding contribution to the performing arts and dance in particular.

ICONIC TABLE MOUNTAIN AERIAL CABLEWAY TURNS 90 (Continue From Page 1) Finally, in 1926, a cableway was suggested by a Nortwegian engineer, Trygve Stromsoe, and work began that same year. The Lower Cableway Station was constructed in the 1920’s. After two years of tireless and often dangerous work, the Cableway was opened to the public on 4 October 1929 and has a proud history of being totally accident-free since then.

The Cableway has been upgraded three times – in 1958, 1974 and, more recently, in 1997, when the cars with revolving floors, called Rotairs, were introduced. The Cableway has transported over 28 million people to the summit of Table Mountain.

It takes four to five minutes to reach the top, and when you arrive, you’ll be met with not only the spectacular views, a WiFi lounge, restaurant, curio shop and wheelchair friendly walkways. There are free guided tours, self-guided audio tours, and all the amenities you need to enjoy this magical experience.

FLYWESTAIR LAUNCHES ROUTE BETWEEN WINDHOEK EROS TO CAPE TOWN On June 24 this year Westair Aviation was granted Designated Carrier status by the Namibian Transport Commission which makes Westair an official scheduled passenger airline, with flights to various destinations within the country and the subregion, under the brand FlyWestair.

When a vintage is born by Samarie Smith South Africans are spoiled for choice when you look at the wine shelves of liquor stores. Not only are we treated with a variety of styles to suit the flavours we love, but we don’t know how fortunate we are when you look at price versus quality.

There is a long history to this back log in price and why South African wines are trying to play catch up, but I am not writing this to dig up old graves. I am writing this to liberate your relationship with wine going forward. Because whether it’s that hearty Italian meatball recipe you crave or something a bit daintier like dauphinoise potato and pouched salmon, there is always a wine to take hands with these flavours and textures. As simple or as complex as these combinations may be, it brings you joy, fulfilment and satisfaction. I see the wine I want to pair with my meal when I start to cook. This is a kingship that is stirred when you fidget through your spice pots in search of that smoked paprika, rosemary or white pepper. As soon as the aromas envelops your senses, you favourite chardonnay or syrah enters that yum-space you are after. Flavours are born in my house every day.

But, it is not every day that we stop to look at the vineyards of the Cape and where they are in their life cycle. I’ve been documenting some vineyards blocks and I’ve been overwhelmed with all the intricate details. It is no easy journey for the vines ahead – completely vulnerable to the whims of nature.

Spring is announced in birdsong and blossoms, but if you took a closer look at the vineyards, life also started there with budburst in September. These tiny leaf factories are where it all starts when daily temperatures exceed 10 degrees Celsius, and they swell and burst to become new shoots. Leaf growth is then powered by the vine’s carbohydrate reserve, helping it to reach for the sun throughout November.

The face of the vineyards changes daily and it is humbling to be reminded that they will need to hang on for dear grapes so that we can fill our glasses.

Finalists for the Diners Club Winemaker & Young Winemaker of the year awards emakers under the age of 30 to develop their skills, express their individuality, and add to the future prestige of South African wines internationally. The awards focus on quality and recognition of excellence and are regarded as the country’s most prestigious and well-respected wine industry competition.

The competition is open to all in the South African wine industry at no cost, affording all winemakers a shot at the sought-after titles. While other awards focus on just the wine, the Diners Club Winemaker and Young Winemaker of the Year awards celebrate the skills and talent of the vintners. The awards are presented to the winemakers who produce a wine that the judging panel considers to be the best in a specified class. The categories for 2019 are Pinot Noir wines for Winemaker of the Year, and White Wines of any varietal or blend for Young Winemaker of the Year.

As in previous years, winemakers can be shortlisted for more than one submission.

Celebrate the end of 2019 on a fashionable high note at the 10th annual Franschhoek Cap Classique & Champagne Festival, ‘The Magic of Bubbles’. This year’s two-day event takes place over the weekend of 30 November and 1 December at the iconic Huguenot Monument.

Breaking from tradition and in celebration of the festival’s 10th anniversary, the organisers have decided to change things up a bit with this year’s dress code, which is Blue and White. Regal colours in their own right, the new theme allows festivalgoers the perfect excuse to indulge in some retail therapy beforehand to find that perfect outfit. As in previous years, a prize will be awarded to the Best Dressed Couple on each day.
