HEALTH Page 7
If you are a business owner or an entrepreneur and your business has been affected by the Coronavirus, Dan Lok will share twelve ways how to grow your business during this global crisis. The article will provide some tactics, insights and strategies you could apply in your business. It doesn’t matter if you are running a small business or a big organization, this crisis triangle will work once you implement it. Forget about your 12-month growth plan, you need to adapt in order to survive and thrive. Get into the right mindset, this is not the time to panic or to get nervous. You need to stay calm, cool, and collected and you cannot make intelligent decisions in your business when you are in a panic. Your team demands leadership from you, now more than ever. This is a time where you should step up as a leader, as a CEO, or as an entrepreneur. What are some of the strategic moves that you need to make?
The Crisis Triangle There are 12 ways that you could grow your business during this global crisis: The first part of the crisis Triangle include: Suspend, Shut down and Sell off.
GIFTS Page 8 - 9
Suspend all non-essential spending, including personal spending. If you want to buy a new car, take a vacation, or make a major investment - forget about it. Your business needs to survive and needs as much cash as possible. Shut down all cash-heavy projects you want to implement. Take a look at each project, and decide which projects will absorb basically all your cash. These projects might have potential, but they go with great uncertainty, since it requires more capital and cash; therefore it is better to eliminate these projects.

The third part of the crisis triangle is to:
HAVE ANY PLANS FOR MARCH & APRIL?
Cape Town and the Western Cape’s, Calendar for March and April is filled with some of the most iconic events. The peak events period continues during the months of March and April 2020, with a range of sporting, cultural, travel and lifestyle events taking place across the province. The city becomes the meeting spot for cultural enthusiast with events such as the Cape Town Carnival and the International Jazz Festival. For the sports enthusiast, March is Cycling Month in the Western Cape where cyclists will line up for the Cape Town Cycle tour, the biggest road cycling event on the South African calendar and the world’s largest timed cycle race. The Absa Cape Epic - the world’s premier mountain bike stage race will start from the iconic slopes of Table Mountain’s National Park – to the craggy shoreline of the Southern Coast - traversing the famous Winelands and beyond into the mountains of the Western Cape.
RETAIN REACTIVATE
Ideally, you want to reduce the human element, and if you use code, you can apply technology with software to automate these disciplines. You may not be able to apply the whole thing, but when asking yourself the question, you will discover that there are aspects of your business you can systemize.
Printed GET IN TOUCH
The next part of the triangle reflects the next three ways to grow your business:
THE CRISIS TRIANGLE
Systemize your processes and procedures so that it is less people dependent and more technology dependent. If you want to increase your efficiency, you could implement systems, maybe hire a remote team to execute. In a crisis, you don’t want your business to be ‘people-heavy.’

MARCH 2020
Sell off any non-producing assets. Unfortunately, not all businesses can be saved, or rescued. Observing the situation emotionless, you know in some instances that you need to turn the key and walk away. Most businesses will require quite drastic change in terms of their business model, how they serve customers and how they deliver value.
REALTY Page 13
The last part of the crisis triangle is to: Re-energize - How do you re-energize your existing client base? Can you add additional value to them. Keep in mind that your customers are experiencing the same thing that others are encountering - challenges, confusion, and uncertainties. What could you provide that will help them, and that will comfort them? Maybe you could offer them some additional help.

Reactivate some of the old customers who no longer buy from you, or haven’t done business with you for a few years. They have done business with you in the past, but somehow you have lost contact - it is now the time to reach out to them. Retain your clients - Retain your customers if you don’t have the resources to obtain new customers. Retention is key and you cannot afford to lose customers during a crisis. If they’re leaving, ask them: “Is there anything that I could improve on? Anything that I can do to change your mind.” You will be shocked how simple it is just by asking. Entries Open for Wine & Food Tourism Awards The profound after-shock on tourism wrought by Covid 19 should not be taken as a signal of defeat, says organiser of the annual Wine & Food Tourism Awards, Margi Biggs. “As traumatic and disruptive as the effects have been on the entire tourism industry supply chain, there is a lot we can do to improve our offerings, their accessibility and the way they are executed. The show can and must go on, albeit in a different way. South Africans are remarkably resilient and responsive to change. Time and again we’ve proved to be survivalists. Now, if we accept that domestic tourism will take precedence and we remain calm and focused about it, opportunities will prevail. “So, very much as a mark of confidence in South Africa’s tourism future we are calling for entries for this year’s Wine & Food Tourism Awards, established to inspire and promote local wine, food and hospitality in a variety of categories. These include the authentic South African experience, innovation in concepts, products and services, and then our newest category, the WWF Conservation Leadership Award introduced to reward those who excel in addressing the issue of sustainability in all they do.” Sponsored by WWF South Africa through funding provided by Pamela and Neville Isdell, the award highlights the critical role of eco and social sustainability in the development and execution of relevant, appealing and competitive travel offerings. “As far as the sustainability category is concerned, I can think of no greater accolade for sustainability award honourees than to be endorsed by WWF-SA, earning each of them the title of WWF Conservation Leader.” Biggs said that given lockdown constraints this year, it would not be possible to keep the category for service excellence. “For obvious reasons, our judges are not able to visit competing establishments, nor can they evaluate service levels.
Photo: Creation Wines
This is a temporary situation and the category will be restored when conditions in the industry normalise.” Entries can be submitted now until 31 July. Submissions will be assessed by a panel of seasoned experts chaired by Jean-Pierre Rossouw, publisher of Rossouw’s Restaurants and the Platter’s South African Wine Guide. Biggs said that up to three honourees would be named for each Wine & Food Tourism Award category on 22 September via online broadcast with final details to be communicated closer to the time. For more information visit www.wineandfood.co.za/awards/
SA's Space Agency Partners with NASA “The station will support human spaceflight missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. It will be integrated into an existing network of three sites in the United States of America, Spain and Australia. As the fourth site, it will complement the other three sites and provide improved coverage and redundancy for critical mission support.” “SANSA will operate, maintain and manage the station,” the South African government said in a statement.” South Africa has been involved in the space industry for about 60 years. NASA was part of the South African space history which started in 1958 - 1976. In 1961 a tracking station was built by NASA at Hartbeestfontein to track NASA probes that were being sent beyond the earth’s orbit. The facility was converted to a radio astronomy observatory after the original venture ended in 1974 when NASA withdrew from South Africa. The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has entered into a partnership with the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to host a Deep Space Ground Station. The station, which will be based in Matjiesfontein in the Western Cape, and will support human spaceflight missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. The agreement will see NASA and SANSA collaborate in conducting technical and environmental research on the potential to establish a ground station in South Africa that will support future near-Earth and deep space exploration, including NASA’s planned Artemis mission to send the first woman and the next man to the surface of the Moon. The agreement will also provide educational opportunities for universities and their students, especially for those interested in space communications and navigation. Depending on the outcomes of the study agreement, long term projects could be implemented soon between SANSA and NASA. This partnership will make South Africa the fourth country after the US, Spain and Australia to host a deep space ground station.
SANSA Managing Director, Raoul Hodges said SANSA was “over the moon” about the prospect of working with NASA again. According to him, the advantage of its location at the southern tip of Africa, with the climate at Matjiesfontein being ideal for the frequency that will be involved in the space studies was the reason they chose the location. On how South Africa will benefit from its involvement, Raoul Hodges said, “It’s about the prestige. First of all to be in the international world space race, which we are part of. The second part is the development of the industry and once you start bringing this type of technology into a country; it fosters people to want to learn the industry, build satellites, build down segments and that type of stuff. So, it creates the opportunity for the industry to get involved long term. It fosters knowledge in a country like South Africa.” “We hope to complete the study agreement, most probably by the end of this year. And then if all goes well and we can get to consensus; I believe we’re looking at 2023,” Raoul Hodges concluded.

Elon Musk’s Space-X Company and NASA Made History South African expat Elon Musk’s Space-X company and NASA made history on Saturday, 30 May 2020 when the first privately-owned company launched two astronauts to space from Florida’s Kennedy Space Centre. The Dragon Endeavour, carrying astronauts, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley safely docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on 31 May. It was the first US launch in almost 10 years with more than ten million people watching the live streaming together with proud South Africans around the world. For Elon Musk this is the “culmination of a dream”. The last crewed launch took place in 2011 while the Space Shuttle program was still active, the historic launch marks the first time a private company launched humans into space to reach the International Space Station. The successful launch was the final step towards NASA certification for SpaceX and will usher in future missions to send astronauts to the International Space Station. Elon Musk is an engineer, industrial designer, technology entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is a citizen of South Africa, Canada, and the United States.

How well do we know space-exploring tech billionaire, Elon Musk? Elon Reeve Musk is a former Pretoria High School pupil who has been one of the country’s most successful expats, founding game-changing companies like Space-X and electric motor car company Tesla. Elon Musk was born in Pretoria on 28 June 1971 to Errol, a wealthy South African engineer, pilot and sailor and his Canadian wife, Maye and raised in South Africa. As a child, Musk was so lost in his daydreams about inventions that his parents and doctors ordered a test to check his hearing.
He and his brother Kimbal and their cousins made pocket money as children selling homemade chocolate Easter eggs door-to-door in rich neighbourhoods. Reportedly, Elon read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica aged nine and he was a huge Dungeons and Dragons fan. At the age of 10, he developed an interest in computers. Elon taught himself to write computer code at the age of 12, creating a video game called ‘Blastar’ which he sold for $500. At the age of 17, he attended the University of Pretoria for 5 months, awaiting Canadian documentation before moving to Canada. “I remember thinking and seeing that America is where great things are possible, more than any other country in the world.” Musk knew it would be easier to get to the United States from Canada by obtaining a Canadian passport through his Canadian-born mother. He transferred to the University of Pennsylvania two years later, where he received a bachelor’s degree in economics and a bachelor’s degree in physics. He moved to California in 1995 to begin a Ph.D. in applied physics and material sciences at Stanford University, but decided to pursue a business career instead of enrolling.Elon subsequently co-founded Zip2, a web software company in 1999 and the same year founded X.com, an online bank, which went on to become PayPal and was acquired by eBay in 2002. In May 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company, of which he is CEO and lead designer. He joined Tesla in 2004 and became the CEO and product architect. In 2006, he helped create SolarCity, a solar energy services company. In 2015 he co-founded OpenAI, a nonprofit research company that aims to promote friendly artificial intelligence. In July 2016 he co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology company focused on developing brain–computer interfaces. In December 2016, Musk founded The Boring Company, an infrastructure and tunnel construction company focused on tunnels optimized for electric vehicles. The launch of the Tesla Cybertruck, an all-electric battery-powered pickup truck took place on November 2019. Other Achievements: In December 2016, he was ranked 21st on the Forbes list of The World’s Most Powerful People. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2018. He ranked joint-first on the Forbes list of the Most Innovative Leaders of 2019. A self-made billionaire, as of June 2020 his net worth was estimated at $42.6 billion and he is listed by Forbes as the 31st-richest person in the world. He is saldo the longest tenured CEO of any automotive manufacturer globally. In addition to his primary business pursuits, Musk has envisioned a high-speed transportation system known as the Hyperloop. Musk has said the goals of SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity revolve around his vision to “change the world and help humanity”. His goals include reducing global warming through sustainable energy production and consumption and lessening the risk of human extinction by establishing a human colony on Mars.
Ciovita Producing Cutting Edge Face Mask for Everyone
A premium Cape Town cycling apparel company has pivoted its design expertise into making durable, effective and easy-to-wear cloth face masks for adults and children aged 3 to 10. Produced by Ciovita, the fully washable and reusable masks feature a removable filter and non-elastic straps to make them more robust, as well as a mouldable nose bridge and a curved construction to prevent touching the mouth and nose. Some of the advanced fabrics used to create the masks are the same as those found in Ciovita cycling kit, including a hydrophobic fabric to prevent moisture buildup. Designed to withstand regular warm washing, the masks have disposable filters that Ciovita recommends replacing after 10 to 20 washes. Suitable not only for cyclists and joggers but also for everyday use by anyone, the masks come in packs of three printed masks (with six filters included) or four plain masks (filters not included). Ciovita is donating a mask to local cycling charity, Velokhaya for every pack of masks sold. Velokhaya uses its existing networks to provide food, masks and cleaning products to 850 vulnerable families across the Cape Peninsula. “Our motivation for producing masks was twofold. Firstly, we wanted to find a way to continue to support our staff over the extended lockdown period,” says Ciovita CEO, Andrew Gold, “but we also knew that with our skilled team and our locally based production facilities we could create masks that were a cut above anything else out there. Cycling kit is about comfort and performance and both these aspects are relevant when you are designing a face mask.” Ciovita also prints bulk custom orders for corporate clients, brands, small businesses and more. A ‘NEW RETAIL’ FOR A ‘NEW NORMAL’ The Covid-19 enforced prohibition on all live events presented SA’s best-loved artisan market platform with a tough challenge… Says Creative CEO, Wanda Du Toit: ‘Our choice was simple: to give up, close our doors and walk away from the hundreds of SME artisans who have come to depend on our platform for a big part of their livelihoods? Or to fight back with every ounce of our entrepreneurial energy?’ KAMERS/Makers chose to fight: their committed team working without pay to launch their Cape Town and Jozi events in the online space, upgrading and innovating their online shopping platform. They then looked at SA’s transformed business landscape – they could not afford to wait for Level 1 (when the live shows would once again be permitted). With traditional retail taking a Covid-pounding, especially in Malls, vacant spaces have been popping up in most major shopping precincts across the country - and now… so will KAMERS/Makers! Local retail has been unchanged for decades - long-leases, fixed spaces and equally fixed ideas. KAMERS/Makers SPACE is a fast and fluid collective of SA’s finest Makers – carefully curated to pop-up (and down!) in any empty retail space, in just a few days.
It offers shoppers a brave new hybrid of the convenience of an everyday, local outlet in the ‘old retail’ mode, but now combined with the vibrant, eclectic mix of amazing products that only KAMERS/Makers can offer. Where their live events would concentrate a vast variety of Makers for just a few days, drawing large crowds of dedicated followers (problematic under current conditions), KAMERS/Makers SPACE focuses on about fifty ‘best of the best’ Makers - in residence for a longer period… from 1- 3 months. Variety is served by simply changing the Maker Mix week on week. It’s the best of both worlds for KAMERS/Makers devotees! Plenty of time to shop at their convenience over weeks and months, and the constantly changing, vibrant variety that has made KAMERS/Makers so immensely popular over two decades. The first KAMERS/Makers space opened in Stellenbosch on 22 June 2020 in Plein Street (right next to PostNet in the old Ocean Basket space). Opening hours: From Monday – Friday 9 – 3pm and Saturdays 9 – 1pm. For more information visit www.kamersvol.com

The online store also offers tasty DIY kits inspired by fan favourite Bacon on Brie breakfasts as served at the iconic Oranjezicht Farmers Market in Cape Town over the past few years. The BLT Breakfast Pack consists of 2 packs of real bacon, 1 jar Baconnaise, a recipe sheet and 6 free range eggs. Add the bread, lettuce and tomato and you are good to go.
At a time when local wineries need the support of the public, Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate has set up a fun, free online webinar series, so anyone can enjoy an expert wine tasting in the comfort and safety of their own home.
Planning next week’s menu? Up the ante with some tasty, artisanal fare. New products available online include: Mortadella – ham with pistachio nuts, 24 Month Reserve Prosciutto – ham, aged on the bone, Smoked Prosciutto – delicate, cold smoked and deboned ham, Cajun Andouille Sausage – slightly spicy and smoky pork sausages with garlic, coriander and a hint of cumin, Bratwurst – hand-made German-style sausages, Bacon Miso Caramel Sauce – crispy, caramelised bacon bits in a caramel made with a dash of miso paste. Ideal on pancakes, flap jacks or ice cream, Chicken Salt – perfect with anything, you name it! Made with pasture reared chicken skins and spices.
There is a series of six weekly webinars, starting on July 2nd, to be enjoyed with a bottle of Benguela Cove wine that you can order by the case in advance with the vineyard’s click and collect service. During each hour-long tasting, visitors can join cellar master winemaker Johann Fourie virtually, live from the vineyards. It is an opportunity, Johann says, to find out more about wines and wine appreciation. He will share his expertise, with tips on how to enjoy the very best from a glass of white, red, rose or bubbly, with advice on subjects such as storing wine, glassware and pairing with food for maximum flavour and enjoyment. The cellar master will be joined by celebrity chef Jean Delport. He won a prestigious Michelin Star at Restaurant Interlude in 2019, in less than one year since the venue opened at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens in Sussex, England. It is a sister estate to the Benguela Cove vineyard, which are both owned by entrepreneur Penny Streeter. “A popular choice are the private online wine tastings that anyone can book for birthdays, anniversaries and other special events. It’s a virtual party experience that you can share with friends and relations, wherever they are located,” says Penny Streeter. For more information visit www.benguelacove.co.za

Fight Colds And Flu With Rooibos For over a century, antioxidant-rich Rooibos tea has been used to help ease and provide protection against colds and flu. Its ability to support the immune system in fighting viruses, enhances the body’s natural defence system making it a musthave pantry staple. One of the most important healing functions of Rooibos tea is that it keeps the body hydrated, unlike Ceylon tea, coffee and energy drinks, which could deplete the body of fluids. These drinks all contain caffeine which is a diuretic. When you’re ill, you tend to lose a lot of fluids from sweating (if you have a fever) and a raised metabolism as your body increases its internal level of activity to battle the infection. Since Rooibos tea is 100% caffeine-free, it will keep you sufficiently hydrated. Drink up to six cups of Rooibos tea a day for maximum benefits. Sore throats and other aches and pains that are characteristic of colds and flu, could also benefit from Rooibos tea. Drinking the tea will keep your throat moist and help to reduce irritation. Rooibos also has a calming effect on the body, which could help to alleviate tension and thus promote better sleep, which is essential for getting over a cold. Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC) says if you’re looking for a natural way to beat colds and flu, look no further than Rooibos. “It is packed with polyphenols, which are micronutrients with antioxidant activity. Polyphenols act as scavengers of free radicals throughout the body, which are detrimental by-products of cell metabolism that can cause inflammation. Aspalatin – a unique antioxidant found only in Rooibos tea, will help to boost immunity, whilst protecting the body against other illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes,” she says.

SOUNDWAVES HEALTH CLINIC
PAGE 11
THE NEW AGE OF UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL IMAGING FOR YOUR HEALTH SoundWaves Health Clinic in picturesque Old Cape Mall in Gordon’s Bay, has through the years proven Frequency Therapy as a highly scientific system of treatment without medication. Our amazing Non Linear System offers you this 3-fold benefit: 1) Scan 2) Analysis 3) Treatment. No chemicals; non-invasive; and NO side effects! Wouldn’t you like to have early warning that there is a growth in your body – when it’s still the size of a pinhead? Wouldn’t you just love to get rid of it - without any bodily invasion? How about a prostate check; a mammogram; a “pap smear” – without being touched at all? What about your child struggling with allergies, ADHD etc. - Don’t you just wish you could discover the cause – and improve the child’s health without medication? Well, we have the solution! Whereas conventional medicine focuses on symptoms, our system can identify and eliminate the origin of a disease/condition – thus eliminating those very symptoms. In fact: we also scan the DNA/RNA; chromosomes; genes; cell walls; cell nucleus; even the mitochondria! Scientific studies, medical records and video footage¹ substantiate that frequencies (sound waves) do in fact destroy bacteria, viruses, parasites - even tumours - without endangering any part of the body.
What a bonus: we do all the work, while you are free to continue your daily activities without interruption - whether working, relaxing, exercising, watching a movie etc. What’s more: it saves you time and money! We have been serving people “remotely” not only in South Africa and cross-border, but also in Australia, Belgium, Dubai, England, Germany, Malta, Namibia, Netherlands, Reunion, Scotland, United States of America – and this list is still expanding! Simply send us your digital photo - from your smartphone to ours!
Furthermore: Frequencies are globally acclaimed and proven as one of the best ways of winning the war against cancer. ² ¹YouTube: Search for “Killing with frequencies” and watch numerous fascinating demonstrations. ² www.cancertutor.com Something completely different Most of you know that, for several years now, we have scanned and treated people all over the world without their physical presence. (The earlier DNA sample /nail clippings method – see our website article “Remote Treatment”). The surprisingly swift world-wide pandemic lockdowns of 2020 quickly shook everybody out of their comfort zones. Globally, people were faced with unexpected challenges to former ways of thinking - and working! And so, for us at SoundWaves Health Clinic, this brought about the most recent addition to our natural health care arsenal: Digital Imaging Without sounding too technical, this process boils down to a few basics: A digital image is a digitally encoded representation of an object’s visual characteristics (i.e. facial features). Such a digital photo can be copied repeatedly without losing any image quality. Using a digital camera or smartphone for a facial photo, light* zooms into the camera lens from the face. This incoming light* hits the inner sensor chip, breaking it up into millions of pixels. (Pixels are the multitude of minute square picture elements forming the image.) The sensor measures the colour and brightness of each pixel, storing it as a number which is then reproduced as a photo. The combination of these pixels is unique to that person’s face. [*Light = energy/vibrations/frequencies. Bearing in mind that all created things have their own unique frequencies, it means that each face consists of its own unique frequencies, captured digitally in the form of a combination of pixels – your unique combination of pixels/frequencies.] So, to scan or treat you in your absence we insert your digital photo into our specialized system - fondly called “The Black Box”. Your photo pixels are instantly transformed into scalar waves. At 1 and a half times the speed of light, these scalar waves capture that image and transmit it into space to find the corresponding source (i.e. you). The very moment that occurs, the connection between you and the machine is established – enabling us to scan or treat you wherever you are. Nothing can block scalar waves!

YOUNG SOUTH AFRICANS SHOULD BE ACTIVE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES Youth Month was celebrated in June in South Africa to remember the sacrifices of past generations of young people in the attainment of freedom and also to recognise the role of youth in shaping the future of the country. Youth Month 2020 was launched under the theme Youth Power: Growing South Africa together in the Period of COVID-19. NSRI’s volunteers are the heart of the charity organisation and who offer their personal time (hundreds of hours) and who are on standby day and night throughout the year to ensure water safety is maintained and people in distress are rescued. A desire to help people and a great love for the ocean has seen 20-yearold Amy Forster of Lakeside become a volunteer rescuer with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI). “One of the things I love about the NSRI is how inclusive it is and how it caters to all ages,” said Forster who is a crew member at NSRI Station 3 in Table Bay. “There are aspects that everyone can get involved in, whether you love the water and getting that adrenaline
rush, or if you prefer to feel a bit more grounded on a bigger boat.” As an organisation, Sea Rescue are not only looking for volunteers to go to sea, but also need volunteers who are willing and able to contribute in a range of different ways. There are even things to do that don’t involve going near the ocean such as driving the rescue vehicle or managing the radios at the base. Forster, who has plans on being a Grade 3 teacher, is a firm believer that the youth of South Africa should be active within their communities, “which is why I love being a volunteer and helping others.” “As young South Africans, we are the future and have the opportunity to be the change,” she said. “I hope to inspire more young people to get involved in their communities and to help others and that is why I love being a volunteer for the NSRI.” The NSRI, formed in 1967, is a nonprofit organisation staffed by volunteers who are on standby day and night throughout the year to ensure water safety is maintained and people in dis-
tress are rescued on both coastal and inland waters. She said her main focus is on becoming a rescue swimmer and a class three coxswain, which would allow her to be at the helm of a nine-metre or smaller size vessel. In her three “happy” years with the NSRI, Forster has accumulated over 150 volunteer hours. She was first introduced to the NSRI in 2016, aged 16. “At the time, I was looking for something that would combine my love for the ocean with my desire to help people.” “Firefighting was another option because I have several family members involved with that department, but my love for the ocean came up tops and that’s why Sea Rescue was the perfect fit.” Her crew typically trains on the Saturday of their duty week to keep on top of fitness and to make sure the crew are competent when it comes to performing all the necessary tasks needed for rescues. Forster also needs to keep her knowledge up to date through the use of the NSRI’s online training platform.

The sense of family engendered by the NSRI is one of the attractions of the volunteer service. “Just knowing that no matter what, my crew has my back and I have theirs.”.
CAPE TOWN LISTED AS TOP STARTUP CITY IN SOUTH AFRICA “The City of Cape Town has prioritised support for small businesses and entrepreneurs, and being ranked as number one in the country just goes to show that this hard work is paying off,” said Executive Mayor Dan Plato. “Of course, we are facing challenging times where many entrepreneurs and startups have not been able to trade due to the lockdown restrictions imposed by the national government during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, I am encouraged to see many businesses adapting to these challenging times and working together to assist those in need. The City has put a number of initiatives in place to support the business sector’s recovery from the lockdown,” Added Mayor Plato.
StartupBlink is a Global Startup Ecosystem Map and Research Center which ranks the startup ecosystem of more than 1,000 cities and 100 countries. Their latest startup report has placed Cape Town in the top 150 of 1000 cities who are succeeding in creating a favourable environment for start-ups to thrive. In the 2020 report, Cape Town, which is home to 60 percent of all South African startups, has risen to 146 in the top 150. “We are pleased to see Cape Town placed so highly in the global ranking. Cape Town is home to almost two-thirds of start-ups in the country and this can be attributed to the many support structures we have put in place to assist entrepreneurs.”
“This achievement is a direct result of the City’s dedicated efforts to attract investment, create the conditions for businesses to grow and create employment. The city boasts first-class infrastructure, sound governance and four of the top universities in Africa, providing a skilled workforce. As tech hub of the continent, Cape Town has what it takes to provide a business-friendly environment which grows the economy and creates jobs. During the lockdown the City has been able to provide support needed for businesses to weather the storm. The SMME COVID-19 Toolkit initiative targets SMMEs in Cape Town, and has provided thousands of toolkits containing the essentials to help get businesses back to work safely,” said Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management. “As part of our initiatives to support businesses during the lockdown we also moved the City’s Business Hub service online. The Business Hub was established to assist businesses and entrepreneurs, and provides key support on how to set up and improve businesses. The Business Hub now also gives access to credible information and clarity on lockdown regulations and relief packages available.”

7 Benefits of investing in Cyprus Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity!
There is a perception that it is very expensive and onerous to realize a Plan B in Europe. In Cyprus – an English-speaking, exBritish colony and full member of the EU – this perception couldn’t be more further from the truth. Cyprus is regarded as one of the safest countries in the world; and last year saw an increase of 65% in property sales to overseas buyers from the previous year. Huge investment is pouring into the economy with all the infrastructural developments and the enormous natural gas fields. There’s never been a better time to explore investing in Cyprus. The main benefits of investing in Cyprus are to secure permanent residency or a 2nd citizenship, through property investment thereby realising a Plan B, the lifestyle options and being a secure investment destination. YOUR PLAN B Acquiring 2nd citizenship in an EU country is highly sought after, not only as an effective legacy planning & currency-hedging tool, but also to secure tangible benefits like a better quality of life, global mobility, economic opportunity and the freedom to live and travel throughout the European Economic Area (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland). Having dual citizenship offers additional insurance against political instability and offers an efficient tax planning solution.
THE LIFESTYLE Another huge benefit of investing in Cyprus is the fabulous lifestyle on offer. Being an ex-British colony, there is no language barrier – everyone speaks English and all the documentation is in English. Cyprus has a relaxed, stress-free lifestyle offering an ideal family environment. Your children & grandchildren will benefit from excellent schools and tertiary education instructions (all Euro-accredited); and the healthcare facilities and medical care are world class. Cyprus is very similar to South Africa. The golf courses are world-class, the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful and Cyprus has 64 blue-flag status beaches, the cleanest seas in the Med and a mountain-range where it snows for 3 months. This is a country for enjoying and exploring. SAFE INVESTMENT DESTINATION Cyprus offers a safe, solid environment in which to invest in real estate. Properties in Cyprus offer excellent value for money when compared to other European countries – especially homes right on or near to The Med. The lush & beautiful Western side of the country is similar to the Western Cape and enjoys the biggest demand and highest growth.
Cyprus’s Citizenship though Investment programme offers an attractive option for investors through property acquisition. Not only is there zero inheritance tax, but the investor is able to rent out his / her properties to earn a Euro-based income. Cyprus’ programme is the quickest in Europe as applications are vetted in 6 months; and dependent children up to age 28 as well as the parents of the main investor also qualify. Once citizenship is granted, there is an extensive list of countries where no travel visa is required and Cypriot citizenship extends down the line to future generations. On Cyprus’ Citizenship programme you do not need to live in the country for your residency to remain valid, nor do you need to be domiciled in Cyprus for tax.
In Cyprus, unlike some other European countries, as an ex-pat you are not restricted to buying only in Special Designated Areas (SDAs), nor are you prescribed to stay in the country every year to retain your residency. Being able to rent your property out has the real benefit where you can earn a decent Euro-based income. There is a high demand for both long-term rentals and shortterm holiday lets. Not only will your asset generate income for you, but you have complete peace of mind that the property purchase is legitimate and your ownership is guaranteed.
Securing permanent residency is also an option worth considering. Being a resident of a country allows the bearer of that residency permit the legal right to live in that country without having to go through an onerous immigration process. The permanent residency programme on offer in Cyprus has been voted as the best in Europe because it automatically qualifies 3 generations in the same family line, including dependent children up to age 25 as well as both the parents and the parents-in-law of the main investor.

ULTRA PADDLE REPLACES 2020 BERG RIVER CANOE MARATHON With the 2020 Berg River Canoe Marathon cancelled along with other sporting events due to the COVID19 lockdown regulations, the race organisers have arranged a ground-breaking virtual race called the ”Ultra Paddle” that will allow canoeists around the world to be part of a show of solidarity, and share in the enthusiasm for the 59 year old classic event while raising money to support Canoeing South Africa’s food relief programme. The four day, 240km race from Paarl to the Cape West Coast town of Velddrif, which would have started on 8 July, always attracts a core of paddlers keen to test themselves against the river, weather and sheer distance of the race that has made it one of the toughest of it’s kind in the world. The virtual race aims to make the multi-day epic accessible to a far wider audience than normal, by asking paddlers to cover the 240km before the end of July, allowing athletes to take on the challenge in more manageable distances. “One of the realities of this lockdown is that the average paddler is far less fit than he or she would be at this time of the year, and it would be irresponsible to ask them to cover distances like the 75km in a day as they do on the third stage of the Berg,” said race organiser Brandon Macleod. The Ultra Paddle will allow participants to cover a total distance of 50 kilometres before 31 July to receive their bronze certificate. Participants who cover a total of 240km before the end of the month will receive silver certificates, and the serious paddlers who cover the full distance in four sessions will get awarded the gold certificates.

Money from the participation fee will go towards Canoeing South Africa’s ongoing relief programme that is delivering food parcels to canoe club members badly affected by the rolling lockdown. For more information visit www.berg.org.za
SANLAM CAPE TOWN MARATHON
SPRINGBOKS, ALUMNI & SUPPORTERS
Following lengthy discussions, detailed review and careful consideration of all options and alternatives, the organisers and sponsors of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon have confirmed the cancellation of the 2020 event, which includes the road and trail Peace Runs.
Maties Sport and the Development and Alumni Relations Division (DAR) at Stellenbosch University (SU) have launched a 2-month fundraising campaign – #Train4Fees – to help student-athletes in need of financial assistance to pay for their study fees in these difficult Covid times.
CANCELLED - VIRTUAL RACE TO GO AHEAD AS PLANNED
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was scheduled to take place on Sunday, 18 October 2020. The event is one of many major South African mass participation sporting events that had to be removed from the SA racing calendar amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The road and trail Peace Runs have also been cancelled. While the iconic road race may no longer be going ahead this year, the inaugural Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon is set to take the world by storm on 18 October, with the introduction of a Virtual Marathon, Half Marathon and 5km or 10km Peace Run/Walk. Through combining cutting-edge technology, advanced tracking features, and pre-recorded audio and video within the Virtual Marathon App, participants get to enjoy the full Sanlam Cape Town Marathon race experience, no matter where they are in the world - from the start line ceremony, the lighting of the Peace Torch and the promenade sounds of seagulls and crashing ocean waves, to the local crowds and Cape minstrels cheering them on. Runners’ race experience will be further enhanced by real-time tracking of their own run, while they are also informed of their virtual progress along the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon route. And as the race will be run in athletes’ local time zone, participants will be able to challenge their mates elsewhere in the world while they wait for their own race to start. This is the new face of virtual racing – a world first, coming from the heart of the Mother City!
RAISE FUNDS FOR MATIES SPORT STUDENT-ATHLETES
Since 1 June, the #Train4Fees campaign, hosted on the GivenGain donating platform with financial and training support not only from Maties alumni but also ordinary South Africans – here and abroad. Notably, ex-Maties Sport players, the Stormers and Springboks Pieter-Steph du Toit, Breyton Paulse and Schalk Brits have posted their support for #Train4Fees. In the customary fashion of less talk, more action, lock and flanker, Du Toit said, “I’m happy to support the #Train4Fees campaign by Maties.” It’s not only those Maties rugby players in a dire financial position that will benefit from the fundraising campaign – all Maties Sport disciplines are targeted with soccer, cricket, netball and hockey making up the suite of donation portals on GivenGain. The public is asked to either donate funds to the various fundraisers or to join the campaign by running, cycling, skateboarding, power walking – whatever fitness training they enjoy. They can also show their support by signing up to become a fundraiser for #Train4Fees and raise funds or every km they crush.
Photo: Schalk Brits
According to Hans Scriba, Fundraising Manager for Maties Sport at DAR, sport players are generally competitive. He commented after the support shown by over one hundred Maties Sport coaches and players. “Several sports coaches, players and volunteer supporters have already registered. We will work hard to extend and widen this giving network by reaching out and involving the vast Maties alumni family.” The target will be R1,200,000 when the campaign draws to a close on 31 July 2020. stories that are life changing
Experience the drive-in cinema of yesteryear! Drive-in venues have seen a global surge in popularity due to restrictions placed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, with venues such as airports, car parks and convention arenas being converted for movie nights. The announcement that Capetonians would soon have a new drive-in cinema came just after South Africans entered the level 3 lockdown restrictions. The Mother City Drive-In promises a safe venue for movie-goers to watch the latest flicks and golden classics while sitting in the comfort of their car and listening via a small speaker located just outside the car’s window. Food, snacks and beverage will be on offer and served by friendly staff, adhering to strict safety protocols. The Drive-In will be a full experience beyond just movie-watching and will also offer a platform to run a series of events to assist and support local comedians, musicians and entertainers post lockdown, as the entertainment industry was hit incredibly hard by the lockdown. The Drive-In is designed to be mobile, and will operate at chosen locations for limited periods at a time before moving to a new area.
The four locations will be announced soon. While there is no confirmed opening date, organisers say the Drive-In will open as soon as lockdown levels decrease and restrictions ease. South Africa had about 50 drive-in venues across the country date back to the 1950s. The two largest drive-ins in Cape Town, the Funlands and Goodwood, the latter located where GrandWest Hotel and Casino now stands, were large enough to accommodate more than a thousand cars each. The Menlyn Park Drive-in, located on the roof of the Menlyn Park shopping centre in Pretoria, was the last drive-in operating in South Africa, but closed in 2014. Limited pre-order tickets and vouchers are already available via Pick n Pay and Webtickets. Tickets or vouchers purchased will be valid for the first series of drive-in shows at a destination of your choice.
