The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards was established in 1997 to offer South African producers the opportunity of having their wines adjudicated locally by a highly experienced and respected panel of professionals from around the globe.

“Our primary objective was – and to a great extent still remains – to support local wine and spirits producers who are targeting international markets for exports and, through our international judges, are able to determine whether their wines will be well received both abroad and locally.”

Since 2003 the competition has received an increasing number of entries from international wine producers. Now, in its 24th year, the competition remains unique in South Africa, in that all judges are hand-picked wine experts, representing all seven continents. Since the start of the competition in 1997, more than 170 different judges from 46 countries have served on the panel. All entries are judged blind by panels of 5 or 6 judges, using the 100-point international recognised OIV judging system.

Level 3 lockdown regulations which were in place at the time of the judging, restricted the transport of alcohol which resulted in special arrangements having to be made to ensure the samples were delivered in time at the Michelangelo warehouse and tasting venue.

South African conservation documentary, The Edge of Existence, by Black Bean Productions, has scooped a top award at the 10th annual Wildlife Conservation Film Festival (WCFF) recently. Out of 150 documentaries at the festival, The Edge of Existence – which took three years to film, with the crew sometimes spending days or even weeks trying to get a single shot - won the award for, “Best Human and Nature Film”.

Directed by James Suter and Charlie Luckock of Black Bean Productions this unique wildlife documentary highlights the complex issues around human-wildlife conflict in Africa and delves into an issue that is quickly becoming a global crisis. The film has premiered at three other international film festivals in 2020 - the Freeland Film Festival, the Garden Route International Film Festival (GRIFF) and the Ireland Wildlife Film Festival.

“Few people really understand the concept of human-wildlife conflict. It is a topic that only recently started to be discussed.

One of the key things that inspired us to create this film is that we would so often hear of incidences of human-wildlife conflict and see these types of issues covered in the media in a way that was quite one-sided. We wanted to create a film that portrayed both sides of the picture – also telling the stories of the people living on the frontline of human-wildlife conflict and highlighting the scale and severity of the incidences that occur – the film offers a completely new way of looking at this,” says James Suter.

The documentary, with breathtaking cinematography including sweeping aerial shots of vast herds of game on the plains of Tanzania, and set against stark images of life in the neighboring villages, tells the important story of how communities and conservation are inextricably interlinked. “Conservation is not sustainable unless we find workable solutions to human-wildlife conflict that can support the communities affected, and no solution will be feasible unless it takes both humans and wildlife into account.”

The Edge of Existence calls on viewers to consider the communities living in close proximity to wildlife and to understand the daily challenges they face, while looking at how to protect wildlife that is impacted by communities encroaching on wilderness areas. Suter explains that local communities living in the vicinity of wildlife areas suffer significant losses as local farmers’ crops are decimated by raiding elephants, and livestock is killed by predators.

Hat Trick For Cape Town As Africa’s Events Capital Cape Town was named ‘Africa’s Leading Festival and Events Destination’ at the 2020 World Travel Awards recently. This came as Cape Town readies to host several international events. Cape Town has previously been awarded the prestigious title in 2018 and 2019 and is thrilled to receive it for the third consecutive year.

As the safety of all those in attendance at events is the priority, the Events Department has developed a new Standard Operating Procedures document as a specific guide for event organisers to a safe environment.

In October Cape Town successfully hosted the Miss South Africa grand finale for the first time in the competition’s six-decade history, and the first ever hybrid Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon. This international accolade signals a new start as the events industry surges towards recovery.

A Tribute to Gawie Fagan

Jarette Petzer, founder of the largest social movement for good in South Africa, #ImStaying, announced his resignation as CEO from the movement. Petzer explained that he wanted to free up time to focus more intently on his latest project, Move ONE Million. Joanita van Wyk will remain committed to the #ImStaying movement and will continue as Director, while Shireen Ebrahim will replace Petzer as company CEO. Ebrahim is a woman of many talents. She is a businesswoman, philanthropist, community activist, wife, and doting mom. She serves as an Executive Director on the ICMT Group of Companies made up of various businesses in the IT, Training and Retail space. She is also an Advisory Board Member on the South African International Film Academy and Awards, Founder and CEO of Charity Driven Organisations, and founder of HEELS International Pty Ltd, a company which assists and support women by focused empowerment projects and rewarding philanthropy efforts.

Ebrahim also serves as a Board Director on the International Association of Pageantry in the USA, as a Global Goodwill Ambassador for Humanitarian work, 2020 Influential Woman of the Year Awards Recipient, and has received various other professional accolades. She has worked extensively with various charitable organizations and major corporates in her businesses.

Some of #ImStaying’s past initiatives include the following, but is not limited to: The #ImStaying community raised an incredible R1 058 520.40 for food vouchers which helped to feed thousands of vulnerable South Africans, they collected R257 000 and assisted with feeding farm workers and their families, the farmers, and their families, as well as supplying feed to the farm animals.

An exciting range of new fundraising campaigns that will undoubtedly warm the hearts of the Rainbow Nation, have already been announced.

The campaigns over the festive season include: #ImSanta, #ImStaying and Gift of the Givers Eastern Cape Aid (to support farmers, farm workers, animal feed, disaster relief and the community as a whole); Hampers4Hunger (aimed at providing food voucher to impoverished families); Kit-a-Kid (aimed at kitting children out in new uniforms for the 2021 school year) and #Care4Kids (a campaign aimed at providing care packages to underprivileged children).

It is with great sadness that we note the recent passing of architect Gawie Fagan, but also with great joy that we celebrate his 95th birthday with an exhibition Celebrating a life’s work at the CIFA building in Hout Street, Cape Town. This exhibition will stay open till the 19 February 2021.

This exhibition is a fit tribute, not only to his incredible contribution to the preservation and restoration of our historical built environment, but as a celebration of his life in all its facets. He was not only a world-renowned architect, but also a pilot, organic farmer, Springbok yachtsman, writer and lecturer, conservationist, photographer and loving father and husband for over 70 years of marriage.

He is acknowledged by his contemporaries as one of the finest South African architects, with numerous awards for his work, which include honorary doctorates from the University of the Free State and the University of Stellenbosch, the Gold Medal of Honour from the South African Institute of Architects, the University of Pretoria Chancellor’s Award, and the City of Cape Town Civic Honours as well as Honorary Life Member of the American Institute of Architects.

He was known not only for his original architectural work, which influenced generations of architects, but also, together with his wife Gwen, for his conservation work, which included the restoration of 24 historical houses in the town of Tulbagh that had been devastated by an earthquake. Over time, Gawie and Gwen became leading experts on the conservation and restoration of vernacular buildings.

Among the over 200 heritage buildings which they restored or saved included La Dauphine, French Huguenot heritage farms in Dal Josaphat, Church Street in Tulbagh, Government House, Boschendal, Klein Constantia and the Castle of Good Hope on which they worked for over 30 years.

Gawie was a leading advocate of a movement to prevent the foreshore highways from being completed and destroying all the buildings in Heritage Square. He also lobbied and fought for eight years for the restoration of the Waterfront, which ultimately culminated in the world-famous V&A Waterfront development.

Google Declares R2.2bn Investment Into Cape Town & The Western Cape The presidential investment summit which took place recently, saw the announcement of five substantial investments into Cape Town and the Western Cape, with large corporates including Google (R2.2bn), Amdec (R2bn), Capita (R500m), Lactalis (R100m) and Teraco (R4.4bn into South Africa with R3bn invested into the Cape) collectively committing R7.8 billion into the Province.

Wesgro’s Investment Promotion Unit, assisted by the InvestSA One Stop Shop, facilitated the Amdec deal, with CapeBPO (formerly known as BPeSA) facilitating the Capita investment. The investments bode well for local and international investor confidence, further positioning the Cape as a place with an abundance of investment opportunities. Acknowledging the calibre of the investors, Salman Kajie, head of the InvestSA One Stop Shop Western Cape, explained that the corporates who have declared these investments are pioneers in their fields and are not distracted by short-term factors.

Kajie went on to explain, “Despite economic headwinds, political uncertainty and a national state of disaster caused by the global pandemic, these investors have evaluated and understand the long-term gains realised by investing in our province. Furthermore, by putting down roots in Cape Town and the Western Cape, they see the opportunities to capitalise on growth on the wider African continent.”

New Art Exhibition and Events Programme at Benguela Cove A new art exhibition has opened (November 28th) at Benguela Cove featuring the expressionist work of contemporary South African artists, Marittie de Villiers and Floris van Zyl. This follows the successful residency of sculptor Anton Smit earlier in the year, who will now create a sculpture park at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens in England, which is also owned by Penny Streeter.

Marittie was recently interviewed in Michelangelo magazine and told how she moved to Cape Town in 1992, and met her first husband who was building a steel Gaff Ketch.

She sailed around the world with him for four years: “Only after having two daughters on board, and returning from sailing the Atlantic, Caribbean and Bahamian Seas (and staying in the USA) did I find my passion - painting. We’d returned to South Africa and bought a farm outside Mossel Bay in the Outeniqua Mountains.

My kids were small, and we all spent a lot of time in our little farm ‘studio’. I used to visit an artist friend in Groot Brak River who had a gallery, and I felt a great urge to paint. I sold many early paintings through her gallery.”

Marittie’s chosen medium, she told Michelangelo magazine, is acrylics because of the speed of the response.

“The festive season is upon us and we have lots of great deals and specials just for YOU!”

It’s quick drying: “I think fast, and like to act on that. I use a variety of flat brushes up to 150mm wide, or sometimes palette knives and credit cards. I prefer large canvases as it allows lots of expression. I am full of emotion and like to use wide movements and big industrial brushes. I’m not scared of space and the freedom it gives to explore more.”

Marittie’s focus is portraiture and the human body she said: “Clients usually describe my work as expressive and emotional. I prefer not to think logically when I paint, as it dampens inspiration.”

Celeste Rostoll, a born and bred Capetonian, outdoor enthusiast, and mother of two, became an entrepreneur with the revival of Venomist products that can be used by athletes for outdoor protection - allowing them to strike back immediately when faced with any attacker.

New Beginnings Having worked in the Hospitality industry for the past 17 years, she was fortunate enough to meet some incredible people. It was through this industry that Celeste and Joe Hannan, met while working on one of the largest events staged in Cape Town.

Creativity With Each Blissful Cake Slice Petra de Kock is the proud owner of a homebased business in Grabouw called The Blissful Cake Slice – specializing in wedding cakes, themed cakes, and many more cake delights.

Petra studied at the Vaal Triangle Technikon where she obtained a Diploma in Food Service Management in 1992. She took up office at Fedics Food Services until 1996 where she was employed as a Food Services Manager until she met her husband, then resigned, and moved to the Western Cape. Petra’s cake journey started when her son Michael turned one. Her sister in law’s mother made him a cake for his birthday - a little blue truck covered with butter icing. Just there and then the cake bug bit her and she started baking “Tellytubby” and Barney cakes, with more themed cakes to follow. Petra’s first cakes were made with a butter icing until she was able to take a course in Cape Town where she was taught the techniques of making figurines as well as cover cakes with fondant.

Petra had her own little shop where she made lunches, cakes and savoury platters which included flower decorating. Circumstances caused her to close the shop in 2004; notwithstanding, she continued to bake cakes as a hobby and, because of her passion.

She was employed by The Smiling Oven in Somerset West where she acted as the tech artist in the preparation of pettinice cakes for a period of 18 months. Petra also specializes in wedding cakes, themed cakes and cupcakes and other normal sponge and fruitcakes. Shying away from the norm, Petra excels in the extraordinary with each cake slice.

ENTREPRENEURS WITH DISABILITIES TO GROW THEIR BUSINESSES On Friday, 20 November 2020, the City of Cape Town, in collaboration with the national department of Women, Youth and People with Disability, the national department of Small Business Development, the Western Cape Government’s Department of Economic Development and various stakeholders, hosted a Disability Entrepreneurship Seminar with the theme, ‘Promoting, Encouraging, Supporting Entrepreneurs with Disability’.

The primary focus of the seminar is to critically evaluate the government services that entrepreneurs with disabilities can access, communicate challenges and constraints experienced in accessing these services and committing to solutions that can benefit entrepreneurs with disabilities. Addressing the seminar, the Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg once again reiterated the City’s commitment to finding effective ways of providing solid and sustainable support to entrepreneurs with disabilities.

“The City believes that economic participation is the most powerful means of empowering people with disabilities. In this regard, the Urban Management Directorate seeks to promote inclusiveness and access for entrepreneurs with disabilities to programmes and incentives.”

“We cannot have an inclusive city if we don’t address the needs of all our residents, including the needs of our residents with disabilities. Entrepreneurs with disabilities face great disadvantages arising from discrimination on the basis of their disability. They are often marginalised, and denied opportunities. A majority of entrepreneurs with disabilities operate their businesses under adverse conditions.

Not only do they encounter difficulties in finding working premises, markets for their products and access to finance, but they also have limited access to training

in entrepreneurship skills and management.”

“They have very limited marketable skills and training. Many are not targeted for training and are constrained by accessibility issues (such as lack of ramps, sign language interpretation or information in accessible formats) from participating in training, to accessing business development services.

This seminar should not just be a talk shop and box-ticking exercise, but must come up with implementable short, medium and long term solutions to the challenges faced by entrepreneurs with disabilities,” said Alderman Twigg.

EMPLOYMENT EQUITY FOR EMPLOYERS HOW TO HANDLE AN EE AUDIT After submitting your Employment Equity Report, the Department of Employment and Labour may issue your organisation with a notice for an audit. An Employment Equity (EE) Audit will transpire as follows: - The Department of Employment and Labour issues your organisation with an EEA7 – the notice of audit – via email to the contact person of the EE Report submission (either the CEO or the EE Manager).

- The EEA7 details the information/documents required from your organisation for the audit. These documents must then be compiled and emailed or hand-delivered to the Department of Employment and Labour by your organisation within 14 working days of receiving the EEA7.

- The Department of Employment and Labour then reviews your documentation and informs you of any compliance issues, along with a specified time-frame for your organisation to rectify and address the compliance issues.

- Within this specified time-frame, your organisation must submit the non-conformances/compliance issues with the amendments that were requested. These corrections must be submitted via email to the Department of Employment and Labour.

- If your corrections are considered satisfactory, you will receive a notification from the Department of Employment and Labour to confirm your amendments and you are then deemed compliant with Employment Equity. If at this point your amendments are not deemed satisfactory, the Department of Employment and Labour will re-issue a non-conformance and you will be required to repeat the process of corrections. This process can repeat up to 5 times.

- Depending on the inspector assigned to your organisation, you can be issued with a fine for non-compliance or the inspector will visit you personally and assist you with your non-conformance issues.

However, this is dependent on the severity of non-conformance and it is at the discretion of the Department of Employment and Labour’s inspectors to handle each case based on its individual elements as they see fit. Many employers are startled when they receive an EE Audit, but with careful EE implementation from the start of your year an EE Audit is ultimately conducted to assist organisations in becoming truly compliant and implement their EE accurately.

COVID-19 AND THE ‘AHA’ MOMENT THE WORKFORCE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR THE FUTURE OF WORKS IS HERE! We spend approximately 90 000 hours of our lifetime working, so it’s no surprise that the disruption of COVID-19 would drastically shake things up in this prominent area of our lives. In March this year, out of nowhere and overnight, workers found themselves having to adapt to new ways of connecting professionally and working remotely. Although a notion that existed pre-COVID-19, working remotely was still unfamiliar territory for many. From anxieties about productivity to blurring the lines between work and home life, this way of doing things required a total shift in thinking and the ability to adapt quickly.

While steadily gaining in popularity over the years, futurists say that the pandemic merely accelerated what was already set to become the working world norm. Further to this, it has bought the concept of coworking office spaces to the fore as an alternative to purely home-bound working, and a way for companies to re-evaluate their structures and cut back on bloated operating and administration costs. In fact, A 2020 study on coworking trends found that coworking spaces worldwide is set to double by 2024, estimating that the number of people opting for coworking over the next four years will climb to 5 million, an increase of 158% compared to 2020.

WHY COWORKING? Coworking can be defined as a ready-to-use working environment in which workers from different companies share an office space and enjoy a sense of community. This allows for cost-savings, flexibility, and convenience through the use of shared infrastructure, such as utilities, internet connection and equipment, and receptionist and custodial services.

The projected growth in the coworking space is encouraging seen as the commercial real estate and co-working sector initially took a huge knock at the onset of the pandemic in early 2020. However, the need to offer virtual support and flexibility, especially for those who don’t prefer working from home, during COVID-19 has seen increased interest in coworking spaces with more businesses, big and small, realising its overall benefits. Given that these spaces are an ideal place to work remotely while continuing to social distance, a lot of companies have now introduced remote working into their long-term business strategies.

I believe a bigger awakening or ‘aha’ moment for businesses at this time, is that they are finally seeing just how outdated the traditional stuffy office model is. It does not align with our modern lifestyles, consider individual needs, or necessarily promote productivity. As we face an uncertain economy, it also makes sense to work smarter, and this means exploring more affordable working solutions such as opting for flexible leases over fixed long-term commitments. Why pay for large overheads when you can pay for what you need as you need, especially in the age of virtual connection? Renting meeting rooms and virtual offices that come fully equipped with all the tech frills by the hour, utilising casual hot desking or semi-permanent spaces, makes it easy for businesses to scale up or down when necessary.

Interestingly we are now seeing higher demand for coworking options from larger corporates and enterprises looking to decentralise their workforce and manage remote teams. More start-ups, freelancers and SMEs which are critical to the growth and recovery of our economy, are also looking for collaborative environments that provide networking opportunities for them to grow their market share.

GRANT LOTTERING - FULFILLING DREAMS OF CHILDREN FIGHTING ILLNESSES On Sunday, 1 November at 07h45, Grant Lottering successfully finished his #24hour4dreams charity ride up and down the world-renowned all gravel Montagu Pass outside George in the Western Cape, having summited the climb 20 times in 24 hours.

“I rode with the names of 30 children battling life-threatening illnesses on my handlebars, the goal being to have a dream fulfilled each time I summit the Pass,” says Grant Lottering, extreme endurance cyclist, international conference speaker and Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador. “ Over R150 000 had already been raised, including a R100 000 donation from the Universal Healthcare Foundation. This amount was enough to accomplish my goal, and, make an additional ten dreams come true. Fulfilling the dreams of 30 children certainly made the suffering worthwhile!”

Julia Sotirianakos, Chief Executive Officer of Reach for a Dream, adds, “The Reach for a Dream Foundation believes in the power of dreams. We ask our children who are facing their own mortality to close their eyes and dream, and if their dream can come true, then they can fight their illness. We cannot measure this hope that our children carry in their hearts. When Grant approached us with this idea – we thought that it would be impossible. But impossible is what we do for our children every day. Grant’s sheer determination and passion has sent our children, their families and the entire SA a clear message – if you have a dream, and you believe, then it can come true.

Following the success of his #24hour4dreams, Lottering is ready for his next big challenge, the #xtremeSA2020 Im’possible Tour, starting in KwaZulu-Natal. Lottering will set off for Wellington in the Western Cape via the Eastern Cape Highlands, the Karoo and the Garden Route, covering a distance of 2 020km.

An endeavour that is expected to see Lottering ride continuously through five days and four nights, averaging over 500km per day.

Lottering, who founded his first Im’possible Tour following a near-fatal cycling accident during a race in Italy in 2013, and was told riding a bike again would be near impossible, hopes that what he will be attempting on the bike will give people a renewed inspiration to be resilient, to persevere, believe and never to give up.

GUY JENNINGS TO COMPETE IN THE WORLD’S TOUGHEST BIKE RACE TWICE In a year of hardship, tragedy and loss for so many, South African amateur endurance athlete, Guy Jennings (Kommetjie), has decided to double down on The Munga mountain bike race in a quest to raise funds for the non-profit organisation #pumpforpeace.

Considered the toughest mountain bike race on earth, the 2020 Munga from Bloemfontein to Cape Town will run from 2 to 7 December, and once completed, Jennings will turn around and complete the route again within a similar timeframe.

The almost-56-year-old competitor aims to raise R56 000 during this 2 200km round trip which will go towards building a ‘pump track’ - a recreational biking track - for children residing in the Langa township of Cape Town.

“I truly believe that sport can change children’s lives in areas of poverty, and give hope and a healthy, active alternative to crime and drugs,” explained Jennings. “Seeing children having fun on a bike is the most natural, wonderful thing in the world, and I aim to help give this gift to as many kids as possible in Langa.”

The track is being constructed by #pumpforpeace, a global NPO initiated by Velosolutions that constructs pump tracks in various communities as a way to encourage unity through sport.

The City of Cape Town has allocated land and 50% of costs for construction of the track at Langa Sport Centre, with the international-level track able to host a Red Bull World Cup Qualifying race.

This will be Jennings’ fourth Munga, which traverses the harsh South African landscape and forces riders to endure some of the world’s most testing biking conditions. During the race, temperatures have reached 50 degrees with riders navigating heavily rutted roads, facing the infamous south-easter, and competing with very limited sleep.

However, Jennings thrives on such endurance sports, having competed in 11 Comrades Marathons, and three 7-Day Desert Runs. His love for exploring new territories has also seen him completing the 230-kilometre Jungle Ultra Marathon through the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, as well as the world’s longest winter ultra-marathon – The Iditarod Trail Invitational in Alaska.

“After months of lockdown, I’m really looking forward to getting out in this beautiful country and competing in the Munga for a truly worthwhile cause,” said Jennings. “It has been a trying year for many, and I hope this will, in some way, provide a measure of happiness and hope for others.”
