“It all started when I was sitting on the beach and found an icecream stick. I made a step pyramid which unleashed my passion for making sculptures out of sand. I trained myself every day for two years, making sand sculptures. I worked and trained with world champs in Florida - Guinness record holder for the largest castle in the world and never looked back!”

After a major campaign that was meant to start in March was cancelled, Reon barely had any work coming his way in 2020 and he has struggled to fulfil his commitments. To make ends meet Reon started building his favourite sand sculptures daily on the boardwalk outside of Onse Huisie in Blouberg. “My passion is sea life, castles and animals. I have this affinity with animals, I see them in my mind and create them. I taught hundreds of children in the twenty years and it gives me so much joy. Seeing the joy on people’s faces upon witnessing my art is the best encouragement.”

With these words Stellenbosch University (SU), graduate Anika Pretorius hopes to inspire others to also achieve their dreams. The Gauteng native recently received a Master of Science (MSc) in Sports Science (cum laude) during a small graduation ceremony held by the SU Department of Sport Science.

Anika, a visually disabled student and Paralympic athlete, says she “personally had to learn to not be ashamed” of her disability and to not try to hide it. “I realised that people accept me for who I am and quickly forget that I can’t see well. I don’t have to prove myself. I’ve always embraced a challenge; therefore, one of the reasons I love Sport Physiology is because it looks at the potential of physiological adaptation to a challenge,” says Anika.

Her Master’s research looked at how participants’ energy metabolism during short, repeated sprints (similar to popular field- and court sports) responded physiologically to the “challenge” of a 6-week low-carbohydrate diet. According to her supervisor, Prof Elmarie Terblanche, being part of Anika’s academic journey was a blessing and a privilege.

“Anika reminded me at a time when I desperately needed it, why I chose a career in academia. She challenged me, as her study leader, on many levels. Together we also learnt and grew as human beings.”

Terblanche says she was astonished by Anika’s perseverance and resilience throughout her studies. She also admits that she was “very sceptical in the beginning” and could not imagine how Anika would cope with all the equipment and laboratory work.

“It is really astonishing that Anika learned to conduct all the exercise tests in the lab, as it is complicated and a lot of things happen at the same time. She also performed all the data analysis herself, which obviously took her much longer compared to anyone else.”

Anika’s study highlighted a couple of new research hypotheses, which I am very keen to investigate. It was not always bliss in the laboratory; however, there were many more episodes of utter joy and laughter and working as a team to get the job done,” says Terblanche.

Despite all the challenges Anika faced, she still managed to balance her studies along with training for the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

In 2012, she was selected to represent South Africa in the long jump event for visually impaired athletes (T13) at the Paralympic Games in London. She missed the 2016 Rio Paralympics Games due to injury and hopes for success at the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Her focus will be on the 100 m (T13).

“The Olympics is a dream that I’ve had since childhood – even before I became visually impaired – but came true in a different way than what I ever would have imagined. I think the Paralympics is even better than my initial Olympic dream, because it reminds me constantly about the Grace of God and it keeps me humble to be surrounded by other amazing athletes who have overcome so much in their lives,” says Anika.

She is currently also involved in the coaching of young Paraathletes and hopes to continue her research while also teaching and helping others who struggle academically.

Winelands Light Railway - Creating Fun Memories For Parents & Children The Winelands Light Railway has been designed and built with familytime in mind. The park include a miniature train park, a kids play park and an obstacle course and is aimed to create fun memories to parents and children by sharing an exclusive outdoor experience.

The Winelands Light Railway on was settled on a property to be developed on the R304, Stellenbosch in April 2018 and finally opened its gates to the public twenty months later on 14 December 2019. The date marks as significant as it is exactly five years after opening their first railway in the KZN Midlands in 2014.

All the locomotives, coaches, track, bridges, and train station has been built locally in South Africa by Andries Keyser, John Sharpe and Charles Viljoen. The trains are a 1/3 scaled down version of prototypical narrow gauge railways from all over the world.

Andries and his wife, Gisela Keyser are actively involved in the operations of the business. For Andries this is not a business, but an absolute obsession.

He has been drawing pictures of trains since his mom can remember.

Him and his wife even got married on a full-scale steam train in Hillcrest, Durban. Andries’s first steam engine, the Lawley, was completed at the age of 24 and took five years to build. The engine is named after his mother, Doreen. The same engine broke the Guinness World Record in 2017 at the Pietermaritzburg Model Engineering Society’s track by completing the longest distance covered by a miniature steam locomotive over a 24 hour period.

The Western Cape Department of Agriculture is offering employees in the wine sector financial relief in the form of the Wine Tourism Worker Support Stipend.

The R12 million support fund aims to assist those who are experiencing financial strain due to the pandemic. The relief fund will be able to allocate R3000 to each employee monthly for three months starting from December 2020 and ending in February 2021. Each winery may claim for a maximum of 10 employees.

Staff Help A Blind Colleague Integrate In The Workplace Mbulelo Lalendle, 39, was born with cataracts in both eyes. He attended Khanyisa School for the Blind in Port Elizabeth as he was categorised as short sighted. Mbulelo now lives in Silversands in Blue Downs.

Mbulelo had retina detachments in both eyes in 2015. During this time his eyesight deteriorated and in 2018 he was diagnosed with Glaucoma after experiencing constant headaches. The procedure he had undergone was to place oil in the one eye to see if that would assist. Mbulelo started working for the City in February 2018. In March 2020, his eyesight deteriorated to such a degree that he had to have two laser operations and another operation for the removal of the oil in the right eye. He had no eyesight in his left eye at this stage.

Mbulelo was off work from March and returned on 2 December 2020 to undergo surgical procedures in an attempt to save what little eyesight he had at that stage. Unfortunately, these operations were not successful and he is now completely blind. On his return to work, the City’s Call Centre team ensured that Mbulelo was comfortable in his workspace. A mobility specialist from the Cape Society of the Blind was requested to explain the process Mbulelo would be going through to familiarise himself and adapt to his surroundings.

The specialist also indicated that he will provide mobility training to orientate Mbulelo until he is fully confident and competent to help himself. The team raised some funds to purchase a cane for him as he needed a walking aid. Mbulelo now uses his newly acquired cane to navigate his way around the workplace including to the lifts.

According to the mobility expert, Mbulelo is adapting quickly and is eager to learn and be independent once again. The City also employed an Expanded Public Works Programme worker to be his ‘buddy’ during this interim period. The worker sits with Mbulelo daily and guides and assists him. Mbulelo is currently working at the switchboard and is answering calls. “We are in the process of procuring a ‘JAWS’ application for him. ‘JAWS’ allows users to ‘read’ the screen with a text-to-speech output or through a refreshable braille display. This will enable him to move throughout a page using keyboard commands.” Mbulelo said: “I am excited to embark on this new journey and looking forward to see how it will unfold. In my mind there are a lot of good things ahead of me. I know there will be trials and challenges, but I believe they will be there to mould my character. In terms of my work environment, I appreciate the support from management, security and my colleagues. I don’t want to be seen as someone taking advantage of the assistance I receive daily; hence I want to gain my independence as soon as possible.”

Experiential Education Garden Now Open In March 2020, the City’s Directorates for Spatial Planning and Environment and Economic Opportunities and Asset Management worked together in creating the Experiential Education Garden in the Green Point Park. The experiential garden intends to engage and activate all five senses, thereby exposing learners to this interactive outdoor experience.

The experiential garden promises to be a place of discovery and learning. It will function as an outdoor environmental education space for engaging and activating all five basic senses, and exposing children to this interactive outdoor experience. The learners will hopefully learn new skills and challenge themselves to take responsibility for the environment and their actions.

On 21 December 2020 the Experiential Educational Garden in the Green Point Park was officially opened. The park is very popular and forms part of the Cape Town stadium precinct; it contains many interesting features including the Biodiversity Showcase Garden, outdoor labyrinth, adventure play park, wetland garden and water systems, as well as open lawn areas and shaded spaces.

The elements that are completed and available to explore and experience during the first phase are: an interactive water feature with several surprises (bring dry clothes), educational mosaic and animal print stepping stones leading children into a crawling tunnel structure, woven bird nests to climb in and explore, a sand pit with a surprise discovery element for children, a structure offering shade and a deck where parents can sit and observe their children having fun, a beautiful mosaic seating structure created using sandbags, a spider’s web climbing structure, balancing poles, sound elements that will create a lot of excitement, a climbing tree with a difference, a Hop Scotch to jump, a picnic area with beautiful sculptured animal seating and trees; and a weather station so children can observe how strong the wind blows, and so forth.

The Experiential Educational Garden is situated on the outskirts of the park, directly adjacent to the City’s Biodiversity Showcase Garden Environmental Education Centre.

Benguela Cove Wins Platter’s Wine Awards Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate has been awarded 4.5 stars for seven of its wines and a further 4 stars for seven others by Platter’s, the leading South Africa Wine Guide. UK’s First Golf and Wine Estate - South Africa Style The UK is a major export market for Benguela Cove wines, with distribution through Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate in the county of West Sussex, an hour’s drive south of London.

Wine and hospitality entrepreneur Penny Streeter OBE, owner of Benguela Cove since 2013, bought the 202 hectares golf club in 2017 and converted it into the UK’s first golf and wine estate. Corne’s Deli, founded by Corne van der Walt in 2015, is the realization of a lifelong dream of hers. Being a qualified chef, with years of experience, quality wholesome, and healthy food was and still is her passion.

Corne obtained her chef qualification in the South Africa Air Force (SAAF) where she spent more than twelve years and achieved numerous awards and accolades. She was also the Base Catering Officer for the prestigious Air Force base Waterkloof, where she was amongst other things in charge of the VIP kitchen that prepared the food for the late president Nelson Mandela, ministers, and other dignitaries.

THE DELI Apart from her chef skills, Corne is also an entrepreneur and identified a gap in the market a number of years ago for artisanal products that are still handmade with love and care and not produced by commercialized bulk manufacturing. For her, it is all about the personal touch.

She started with a focus on artisanal cheese which required a lot of dedicated research, sourcing, and building up relationships with smaller cheesemakers and farms across the country to ensure the best, natural products are delivered from the farms to the Deli. The focus is always on quality hand-made South African products which differentiate her from other Cheese Shops that promote and sells foreign or mass-produced cheese.

Initially, she sold artisanal cheese at different family and farmers’ markets in the Western Cape but soon realized there is a hunger for more hand made products, free from preservatives and artificial chemicals one so often find in the shops or supermarkets when products are being mass-produced.

Corne soon built up a regular customer base and with the growth from the markets, she then established Corne’s Deli at the rustic Paardevlei estate in a historic building designed by Sir Herbert Baker and expanded the offering to typical Deli products, while sticking to her motto of sourcing only quality, hand-made produce from South African farms and producers.

Apart from the cheese and other artisanal products, the Deli arguably offers the best coffee in the Helderberg area. The coffee and tea menu is complemented by the sit-down light meals menu. The gourmet toasted sandwiches are only made with products found in the Deli, from the sourdough bread, farm butter, artisanal cheese, and cold meats that are being fused in interesting taste sensation combinations - all of it can be found in the Deli.

Customers are welcome to come and taste the cheeses and Corne will recommend the best pairing and use of the cheese in recipes. “We offer vacuum sealed pre-packed cheese for pick up and go as well as the opportunity to taste and then we’ll cut the size you want and weigh it, the old traditional way.”

DELI BOX “We recently introduced our Deli box which contains a variety of four of our best artisanal cheeses, a selection of cold meats and salami’s, a fresh baguette, fresh fruit, mixed nuts, dried fruit, celery sticks, pickled onions, tzatziki, jalapeno jelly, hummus, olives, and some chocolates - enough for four to six people and perfect for events or parties, although it can be ordered and enjoyed any day of the week. You just open it, indulge, and afterward recycle the box, no dishes, no preparation, no hassles, and fantastic value for money.

Mr Yum Launches Table-Ordering

The transformation of the iconic Glencairn Hotel has been completed with the opening of Barstaurant at Glencairn, a new family-friendly restaurant off the shore of False Bay between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town.

Technology is revolutionising the restaurant industry internationally and Mr Yum is leading the way in South Africa with the launch of their QR code mobile tableordering. The web-based digital menus allow diners to view the menu then order and pay directly through their phone. Combining the concept of visual marketing with on-demand, restaurants using the platform have found a rise in average meal spends of 20% to 45%.

Opens In Glencairn

Barstaurant at Glencairn occupies the entire floor area of the landmark building, which dates back to 1904. It is the new family offering created by the Tintswalo group, in partnership with Tintswalo Atlantic’s seasoned general managers Ryno and Melissa du Rand, and restauranteur Clint Fennel, who is well-known in the industry after ten years managing Willoughby’s in the V&A Waterfront.

The restaurant seats 80 diners and offers various seating areas, including a welcoming lounge area with a fireplace, a sushi bar, and a light and bright covered terrace, as well as cosy dining in the Sports Bar area, which includes an alcove for more private dining. The outdoor dining areas are already popular with parents and their young children, overlooking lawns with jungle gyms and safe play areas, with sea views in the distance. Specially geared for children, Barstaurant at Glencairn includes a kids’ menu with an inter-active opportunity to make their own pizzas.

Barstaurant at Glencairn is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. An extensive selection of drinks is available, including beers on tap and craft beers, and a wine list that features some popular options, as well as more unusual vintages and varietals. Live music is available on weekends and sports events are broadcast on big-screens in the bar area.

Mr Yum has pioneered restaurant ordering technology across Australia and New Zealand for over two years. Since March 2020, the global business has grown by 20 times, with over a million users making use of the platform each month. Offering any combination of dine-in table ordering, pickup and delivery, the concept was brought to South Africa by a team of local entrepreneurs who launched the technology locally to help restaurants become more profitable. “Unlike other industries, restaurants have remained largely unchanged by technology, even as customers have changed their purchasing behaviours,” says Mr Yum SA COO Gary Harrod.

“Consumers are using technology in more parts of their daily life and their expectation is that restaurants will offer a seamless technology-enabled experience. Mr Yum has stepped up to transform dining out in the same way that Shopify transformed retail shopping.”

Restaurants have no sign-up costs, fixed costs or lock-in contracts. Mr Yum takes a small transaction fee of 4.9%, with volume and group discounts available, which includes the payment gateway fee, free point-of-sale integrations, staff training and unlimited customer support. To help restaurants during COVID-19, Mr Yum is offering a free visual menu option with a built-in guest register at no cost to restaurants.

SURGERIES & CONSTANT PAIN NO DETERRENT FOR PHD CANDIDATE Takunda Chitaka is no stranger to the challenges that life can present along the way or success and graduated with her PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Chitaka was one of 10 emerging scientists to receive the Blue Charter fellowship from The Association of Commonwealth Universities last year and was also the first recipient of the Excellence in Academia PETCO Award for research she had been working on since 2016.

Her PhD thesis is titled “Inclusion of leakage into lifecycle management of products involving plastic as a material choice,” in which she argues that litter should be included in the lifecycle management of plastic products.

For the past few years Chitaka has been walking the beaches around Cape Town, conducting surveys to estimate the amount of litter that flows into the marine environment and explore how this knowledge can influence development of strategies and interventions. The physical tasks like picking up litter from beaches and the painstaking analysis of what was recovered from the shores, meant the flare-up of an old injury could have been devastating. She broke her hip when she was 11 and was told she would have constant pain.

She consulted a doctor who told her she needed a hip replacement, which she couldn’t afford. Faced with the prospect of not being able to walk properly or do any physical work, she refused to give in to the physical pain or the mental uncertainty.

“So we decided to crowdfund and the stars aligned.” Her supervisor Professor Harro Von Blottnitz drove the fundraising effort himself – from the heart. “I’m not a quiet person professionally, but personally I like to keep everything to myself. I don’t think I’ve ever felt that supported in my life. People really rallied around and said, ‘This girl needs to get surgery, let’s help her’. My surgery was fully paid for, crowdfunded, which I still think is wild!”

A month later she was presenting a PhD proposal, having just recovered from the operation. “I insisted, and I went for it and it didn’t go well,” she said. Her proposal was sent back for revision.

In 2017 she attended an international conference where she took part in a competition for PhD projects, and finished second. With that experience, Chitaka gained the confidence she needed to have another attempt at representing her PhD proposal – and it was accepted. All of a sudden her life got very busy – from lecturing to being involved with the faculty’s student council to doing beach surveys. But life’s challenges were never far away. Even after her hip surgery, she had debilitating pain. She needed a second surgery. There was no time to rest. Chitaka was selected for a fellowship in New Zealand in 2019. She gritted her teeth and decided that, in spite of the pain, she would give it her all. “I went to my doctor and said, ‘Write me a script.’ I packed about six months’ worth of pain medication in my suitcase. Am I supposed to stop living my life because my body hates me? No, I must get on board,” she said.

“Life is hard, but then you don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater,” she said.

“You persevere; you have to be positive for yourself. Your inner voice has to be positive. You have to say, ‘Life sucks right now, but I’m going to keep going.’ Look at where you’re going. Don’t dwell on where you’ve come from.”

WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT RESIDENTIAL ESTATE ACCESS CONTROL AND THE POPI ACT Digital license scanning pioneers, ATG Digital, address growing data protection concerns around collecting personal information at residential estate access points. The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) came into effect on 1 July 2020, giving all responsible parties (entities that collect and process personal data) one year to comply. This has raised a multitude of questions regarding what information may be collected at the gate among housing complex managers and residents.

ATG Digital, who have built their systems around The Protection of Personal Information best practices, share insight into the necessity and legality of scanning drivers’ or motor vehicle licences.

“For years, visitors have been asked to provide their name, cell phone number and signature (at a minimum) to gain entry into lifestyle estates,” says Ariel Flax, Head of Sales of ATG Digital, and adds, “POPIA throws these practices into question - but not for reasons one might assume.” Ariel explains: “Visitor registration is allowed. However, often the visitors’ information is handwritten in a book that’s vulnerable to prying eyes - and therein lies the problem.

“POPIA doesn’t disallow the collection of information. Instead, the Act protects people’s personal information by enforcing rules on what is collected and why; how it is stored; and, if shared, with whom and why. The answers to these questions must be made known to the owner of the information before they share it.”

Having consulted a specialist privacy and data protection corporate law firm for several years, the digital access control pioneers spared no effort in ensuring that POPIA compliance is baked into their solutions.

Ariel: “Lifestyle estates, complexes and community schemes should not collect more information than they need to fulfil a specific and reasonable purpose. For example, protection (in the case of security) or administration (by managing agents).

“Features like ‘de-identification’, where unnecessary information that has been captured from driver and motor vehicle licenses is redacted, eliminate non-compliance risks,” says Ariel. He adds, “The system can be set so that the information is hidden on the scanning devices only or reports as well. On the back-end, you can set access permissions on reporting.”

When it comes to retention of personal information, Ariel says that the ATG Digital solution includes a pre-set for data records to be deleted after a specified period another requirement of the Act. The 50-year low interest rates combined with the zero transfer duty payable on properties up to R1 million has fuelled high interest and significantly increased activity among first-time buyers whom were formerly renting.

Even before Covid-19 struck, the movement towards working from home had been slowly gaining momentum globally, as many corporates looked towards ways to alleviate transportation challenges for their employees, especially long hours spent in traffic, and increase quality time with their families.

What the pandemic has done, however, is fast-forward this movement significantly along its timeline, with scores more desk-bound office workers and the companies they work for realising that, thanks to advancements in technology in recent years, work-from-home scenarios can now be the norm rather than the exception.

The result in the residential market, says Carl Coetzee, CEO of bond originator BetterBond, is that: “Many people are now looking towards semigration to take them away from their traditional offices in big cities and into permanently remote working scenarios, and they’re doing this not only to change their work habits but to take them to better lifestyles in smaller towns, especially along South Africa’s coastal regions.”

With a population of predominantly ‘young’ buyers, the increasing demand for accommodation to buy is helping drive activity in the residential property market, with a ripple effect upwards across all sectors of the market and even creating stock shortages in high-demand areas.

There are numerous factors that add to the attractiveness and very real possibility of this now for homeowners, notes Coetzee. His company is witnessing first-hand the obvious surge in the buyers’ market that has taken place since July 2020 with a substantial increase in prospective homeowners applying through bond originators to secure the best bond rates.

Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive of the Pam Golding Property group said that in the current environment, millennial buyers can get into a property or suburb that they might not have been able to afford a year ago. Homeownership is one of the best ways to create wealth and, in South Africa, plays a critical role in economic transformation, the property specialist said. According to FNB, data from the Deeds Office shows that younger buyers (below 35 years) now account for 43% of residential sales – up from 38% in 2019.

According to Lightstone, most first-time buyers enter the residential property market in the R700,000 – R1.5million price range; both first-time and repeat buyers mostly want three bedrooms and two bathrooms; and women make up most of the first-time buyers, men make up most of the repeat buyers, while sectional title and estate properties are particularly appealing to female buyers.

The deposit that financial institutions require from both first-time and repeat buyers is declining. The deposits for first-time buyers has averaged 7.0%, while for repeat buyers it has averaged 9.03%. Loan applications for 100% bonds have risen steadily in recent years.

Coetzee notes that in regards to ‘resort’ destinations such as coastal towns, the holiday home market hit a decline earlier last year, with many homes coming onto the market as Covid-19 took its course. The semigration movement is also seeing a reinvigoration of many coastal towns themselves, inhabited largely in the past by retirees, and which are now experiencing an influx of younger families who in the past were tied logistically to lives in big cities.

Remarking on feedback that BetterBond receives from estate agents working across the country, Coetzee cites the northern KZN and the Southern Cape coast as the coastal areas garnering the most attention overall. For instance, RE/MAX Lagoon Estates makes the point that, “There has been a boom in property sales along the coast.” The agency reported a record-breaking sales month for October 2020, accumulating their highest sales figures in their 15-year history of selling properties within Langebaan on the Cape West Coast and the surrounding area.

Torpedo SwimRun Cape returns with a new autumn date, in April 2021, before the series moves north to Gauteng’s Cradle Moon Game Lodge.

Next season starts with the Torpedo SwimRun Wild and Flow in Wilderness, in September.

HIKER BREAKS RECORD BY SUMMITING LION’S 16 TIMES IN 17 HOURS Justin Bradley grew up in Rondebosch and runs a family business in the Southern Suburbs. He is passionate about the mountain and helping others less fortunate than him. On Saturday, 5 December 2021 Justin summited Lion’s Head Mountain 16 times in 17 hours and 12 minutes. After his amazing feat, the founder and chair person of Lion 500 invited him to join the Lion 500 Initiative and summit Lion’s Head 500 times for charitable causes. Justin joins Jean-Michel Victor and Ernest Carrick in their quest to summit Lion’s Head Mountain and raise funds for the charities but also spread awareness about the importance of Mental Health. Justin officially begins his Lion 500 on the 11th of January 2021.

Justin said he was inspired to take on Jean-Michel’s record after seeing the news article about his 13 summits in 23 hours. Justin said, “My competitiveness kicked in and I thought to myself I could do that, from then on it was game on!”

Justin kept going for 16 summits because of competitiveness, feeling a sense of achievement and for the love of the mountain. Justin says he learned great lessons. “The key lesson was if you put your mind and effort into something, you will definitely succeed in one way or another.”

Completing multiple summits on Lion’s Head is no walk in the park, especially with the blazing sun and weekend traffic on the trails. The temperature was higher than expected to 30 degrees Celsius. Due to the busy trail, Justin had to skip the staples and chains and do 4 summits the long way round which is an extra 300m.

“During trials of endurance one experiences so many feelings,” Justin said. He felt many physical and mental feelings on the day, including pain, excitement, accomplishment and feeling gratitude and a real mental boost.

The Lion 500 Initiative started with the intention of harnessing the pre-existing love that the world has for Lion’s Head Mountain in Cape Town. The main idea was to bring people together, to promote understanding and open conversations about mental health and encourage everybody and anybody that it’s fine to talk about their pain, their scars and connect with new people with whom they can identify and grow with. All of this usually starts with one person, walking the walk and trying their best to set an example for others.

Lion’s Head Mountain is not only loved for its visual beauty and the scenic views it offers from the summit. It is loved, and appreciated and thus fiercely protected because of its healing properties. The mountain is filled with positive energy, radiates negative ions and befriends anybody who shows it respect, love but most importantly peace. This mountain has healed broken hearts, brought peace to suffering souls, introduced people to new friends and brought loved ones together.

The purpose of Lion 500 is to inspire everyone to lift themselves and those around them higher not only by going up a mountain, but in their hearts and minds. No matter the colour, shape, size or background of a person, we want to inspire them to love themselves, pick up themselves and know that there is always a place for them at Lion 500.

BOTTELARY HILLS RENOSTERVELD CONSERVANCY OFFER VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES

Visit the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy (BHRC), just outside Stellenbosch and enjoy a variety of activities that cater for families, nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, mountain bikers, food and wine connoisseurs. Explore a 92km trail network through rolling hillsides, conservation areas, vineyards and farmland in the Bottelary Hills. The multiple route options cater for various skill and fitness levels.

The BHRC is a registered non-profit organisation that forms part of the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve. Although the core focus of the BHRC is to care for, expand and sustain the large tracts of remaining Renosterveld in the area, there is a strong emphasis on community development. Concerned landowners together with Cape Nature Conservation initiated a conservation program to protect the remaining vegetation, rehabilitate sensitive areas and reintroduce species lost to the area. The Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy was founded in 1992 and encloses the Bottelary Hills situated on the northern fringe of Stellenbosch.

The tranquil surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for a wellness weekend or a relaxing game of golf at one of the world class golf courses around Stellenbosch. The ever-evolving network of MTB trails remains a key attraction. Although the MTB trails are single-use, many of the member farms have hiking trails on their properties.

The Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy serves as an example of a successful landowner-driven conservation area. “We are grateful to our member farms that commit to implementing environmentally sustainable farming practices, fire management and alien eradication, with the conservation and protection of the Renosterveld a major priority.”
