The story of rescue, rehabilitation and release is one that the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation and the NSRI are incredibly proud of. On Thursday, 14 January 2021 they released some of their shelly friends back into the ocean so that they can begin their journey home in warmer waters.

The release included 21 loggerheads (Luis, Annie & 19 hatchlings), 1 hawksbill turtle (Olaf) and 1 green turtle called Roo. These turtles were rescued and have been in the care of the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation for the past year or so, after being rescued on beaches from around the Western Cape.

Most of the turtles that are rescued are loggerhead hatchlings that hatched on the northern beaches of KwaZulu-Natal and then caught the warm Agulhas current down the South African coastline.

Once they reach the south coast and the current slows, the turtles can end up in the colder surrounding waters, which can cause the turtles to suffer from cold shock, injury and dehydration. When the turtles become compromised, strong winds and currents expel them on our beaches, between March and July every year.

If your choice of encrypted messaging app is a toss-up between Signal, WhatsApp and Telegram, do not waste your time with anything but Signal. This isn’t about which has cuter features, more bells and whistles, or is most convenient to use - this is about pure privacy. If that’s what you’re after, nothing beats Signal. WhatsApp recently sparked much debate on 6 January 2021, when they announced change in their terms of service. Informing users that it will share data with Facebook and third parties effective 8 February 2021. Users were told to either agree or discontinue using the platform. Since WhatsApp has decided to delay updating its privacy policy to May 15, 2021 following mass confusion over what data it shares with its parent company, Facebook.

Now if Elon Musk’s tweet: "Use Signal" has you looking for a new messenger, here are the key privacy differences in the biggest players right now.

Signal - Does not collect data, only your phone number. It’s Free and no ads. Funded by nonprofit Signal Foundation. Signal is fully open-source. The encryption: Signal Protocol.

Signal is a typical one-tap install app that can be found in your normal marketplaces like Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store and works just like the usual text-messaging app. It’s an open-source development provided free of charge by the nonprofit Signal Foundation and has been famously used for years by high-profile privacy icons like Edward Snowden.

WhatsApp - Data is linked to you: Read about in-depth analysis below. It’s Free with ads and premium versions are available. Funded by Facebook. WhatsApp is not open-source, except for encryption. The encryption: Signal Protocol.

There’s a difference between security and privacy. Security is about safeguarding your data against unauthorized access, and privacy is about safeguarding your identity regardless of who has access to that data. On the security front, WhatsApp’s encryption is the same as Signal’s, and that encryption is secure. But that encryption protocol is one of the few open-source parts of WhatsApp, so we’re being asked to trust WhatsApp more than we are Signal. WhatsApp’s actual app and other infrastructure have also faced hacks, just as Telegram has.

Jeff Bezos’ phone was famously hacked in January of 2020 through a WhatsApp video message. In December of the same year, Texas’ attorney general alleged - though has not proven - that Facebook and Google struck a back-room deal to reveal WhatsApp message content. A spyware vendor targeted a WhatsApp vulnerability with its software to hack 1,400 devices, resulting in a lawsuit from Facebook. WhatsApp’s unencrypted cloud-based backup feature has long been considered a security risk by privacy experts and was one way the FBI got evidence on notorious political fixer Paul Manafort. To top it off, WhatsApp has also become known as a haven for scam artists and malware purveyors over the years.

Telegram - Data linked to you: Name, phone number, contacts, user ID. It’s Free with forthcoming Ad Platform and premium features. Telegram is funded mainly by founder Pavel Durov. Telegram is only partially open-source, The encryption: MTProto.

Telegram falls somewhere in the middle of the privacy scale, and it stands apart from other messenger apps because of its efforts to create a social network-style environment. While it doesn’t collect as much data as WhatsApp, it also doesn’t offer encrypted group calls like WhatsApp, nor as much user data privacy and company transparency as Signal. Data collected by Telegram that could be linked to you includes your name, phone number, contact list and user ID. Telegram also collects your IP address, something else Signal doesn’t do. And unlike Signal and WhatsApp, Telegram’s one-to-one messages aren’t encrypted by default. Rather, you have to turn them on in the app’s settings. Telegram group messages also aren’t encrypted. Researchers found that while some of Telegram’s MTProto encryption scheme was open-source, some portions were not, so it’s not completely clear what happens to your texts once they’re in Telegram’s servers.

Telegram has seen several breaches. Some 42 million Telegram user IDs and phone numbers were exposed in March of 2020, thought to be the work of Iranian government officials. It would be the second massive breach linked to Iran, after 15 million Iranian users were exposed in 2016. Most recently, its GPS-enabled feature allowing you to find others near you has created obvious problems for privacy.

Is WhatsApp more convenient than Signal and Telegram? Yes. Is it prettier? Sure. Is it just as secure? We won’t know unless more of its source code is revealed. But is it more private? Not when it comes to how much data it collects comparatively. For real privacy, Signal is the best option.

Performing Horses Move To Cape Town To Attract Tourists For the first time since arriving in South Africa in 1960 the famous South African Lipizzaners get to call Cape Town their home. The Lipizzaner is one of the oldest domesticated breeds of horse still existing in the world today.

The SA Lipizzaners who has been a part of the Kyalami community for over 70 years settled in at their beautiful new home, the Mistico Equestrian Centre in Paarl on 20 January. The group has achieved much success over the years, touring the country before establishing regular Sunday performances in Kyalami from 1971. The non-profit company has been in Kyalami since 1960, when former Polish cavalry officer Major George Iwanowski came to South Africa and ended up training Lipizzaners which were rescued from war-torn Europe and brought to the country by Count Jankovich-Besan some years before. The current Lipizzaners are descendants of those horses.

In 1960 Major George Iwanowski began developing his equestrian centre in Kyalami and gradually built up a team which travelled countrywide giving performances. In 1969 he built the first indoor hall in South Africa especially for their training, followed by the first regular Sunday performance in 1971.

The South African Lipizzaners is an NPC dedicated to the advancement of this proud cultural heritage and the preservation of this most ancient breed of horse. Over the years, the South African Lipizzaners have become an integral part of South Africa’s cultural heritage and often appear on film and television, at various public performances. SA Lipizzaners volunteer, Gina Boxley said the move to Cape Town was purely a financial decision.

She added that due to the lockdown the group could not perform for most of 2020, and the shows they did run were at half capacity. This, along with a lack of corporate sponsorship had made it hard to support the group’s 35 stallions and 28 mares. The company had to let go of some of its grooms and riders.

“What I will miss most will be visiting the horses in the afternoons when it was just them and me, and hearing them whinny in excitement as I brought them carrots, who did not accompany the group to Cape Town. We hope the move to the Mother City would attract tourists once travel restrictions are eased,” added Boxley,

“We believe that this will provide us with a large and diverse new set of audiences for the Lipizzaners, particularly given the tourists that visit the Cape area during summer. Mistico is the largest livery and show holding venue in the country offering two 950 pax indoor arenas (and a third, even larger, under construction indoor), a 300-guest wedding and conference venue and a weekend restaurant. It is perfectly situated, close to the winelands, to attract both locals and visitors from all over the world! We believe the move to Mistico will ensure the long term sustainability of these very special horses.”

A Story of Rescue, Rehabilitation And Release (Continue from page 1) Once these hatchlings arrive at the Aquarium turtle rehabilitation programme they are admitted as individual patients, and over the following months receive regular medical care, cleaning, daily feeding (twice a day) and lots of love.

As the end of the year approaches and the turtles are healthy, have gained good weight and are behaving like strong turtles, the vet clears them for release. They receive a microchip and are then released off Cape Point back into the warmer water. Their reason for stranding is often quite different and can range from infection to bite injuries, plastic ingestion, boat strike injury and ghost fishing gear, as was the case with Annette back in July 2019. Annette (Annie) named by the NSRI because she was entangled in a net was rescued on Noordhoek beach after having been entangled in fishing gear. Annie underwent intensive critical care in the months that followed as she was incredibly weak, floating with her bum up and not willing to eat.

The rehabbers used all available diagnostic tools to determine what was wrong with her, which included two CT-scans, an ultrasound, endoscopes and x-ray studies to attempt to shed more light on the situation. Alongside this diagnostic work, Annie was fed regularly and was provided with inter-coelomic fluids.

In November 2019, Annie was moved into the I&J Ocean Exhibit with the hope that she would do well with extra space and depth to swim. This proved to be the case as Annie quickly adapted to her new home and started eating a month later (it took her 5 months to start eating). In the last year, Annie has been a powerful ambassador to all visitors to the Two Oceans Aquarium, teaching them about the dangers of fishing gear and plastic in the ocean. Through visiting Annie, many people have fallen in love with marine life and have been inspired to help protect the oceans.

“It’s been such a treat to release these turtles - a total full circle,” said Talitha Noble, Conservation Coordinator of the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation. “And the thing with circles is that they keep going around.

As we say goodbye and good luck to these strong and capable creatures, we busily get prepared for a new season of stranded and weak turtles to help and nurture and protect. You can be apart of that. You can be a turtle rescuer, support us in their rehab and help protect the home they are released into.”

Turtles are incredible creatures and natural survivors, from the moment they hatch they are on their own and their knowledge and understanding of how to do things is instinctual. This means that even if they spend years in a rehabilitation environment, they will never unlearn how to hunt, swim, forage and fend for themselves.

Diamond Jewellery Design Changing Young Peoples’ Lives Diamond jewellery design is increasingly emerging as a vehicle to spark youth employment, entrepreneurship and innovation among young people in Africa and North America as the continents position themselves to take a greater slice of the global diamond jewellery market.

A key initiative in this regard is the De Beers Group Designers Initiative (DBGDI), a youth beneficiation skills development initiative aimed at giving young jewellers world-class diamond jewellery design and manufacturing skills.

DBGDI through the Shining Light Awards has established a growing footprint in each of the De Beers Group’s diamond producer countries: Botswana, Canada, Namibia, and South Africa.

The 2020/2021 instalment of the Shining Light Awards (SLA) jewellery design competition invites young diamond jewellery designers to showcase their talent.

The SLA, which have existed for 23 years in South Africa, 11 years in Botswana and Namibia and two years in Canada, have created a range of partnerships with tertiary institutions and industry to provide a platform for as many young jewellers as possible to compete to win an opportunity to enhance their jewellery design skills.

This year’s design theme ‘The Evolution of Love and Life’, aims to inspire young designers to create innovative and game changing pieces showcasing their interpretation of the theme. The pieces should be versatile and combine commerciality with red carpet elegance, celebrate fresh thinking, showcase the beauty, strength & sustainability of natural diamonds and appeal to a millennial consumer anywhere in the world.

In 2019, the total global jewellery market was valued at approximately $229.3 billion, and was forecast to reach $291.7 billion by 2025, according to global research expert Mahsa Shahbadeh. “Africa and Canada’s share of this market is steadily growing, thanks to the creativity of entrepreneurs, modern production technologies and online sales platforms”, says Peter Phemelo Moeti, Senior Vice President of De Beers Sightholder Sales SA.

From a young age, Daneska loved spending time in the kitchen baking. “It was and is always so satisfying perfecting a recipe and sharing it with the people around me.” They offer a variety of homemade treats ranging from their delicious banana bread, carrot cake and date balls to something savory, mainly ‘Belegte Brötchen’, which are German rolls with special toppings. Coming from a Namibian-German background those definitely had to be on the menu.

It started as a faint idea about two years ago. Daneska Rohrmüller the bubbly owner of Carbon Coffee, wanted to open a coffee shop for the early bird. She is one of those people who are always up early, whether it is to go for a run, cycle or to class but could never find a place that was open early enough.

“I wanted to open a place for the early bird like myself. Somewhere you can come to, halfway, during or after a cycle/run.” So there was an idea, but no location.

After Daneska finished high school she had no idea what she wanted to do, but decided to study engineering. From the start she knew it was not for her, but continued to push through because she did not have a back-up plan. Then lockdown happened and she knew this was her chance to change direction. Fast-forward 8 months and an amazing opportunity with Helderberg Cycle World came to light – the perfect location for browsing whilst waiting for your coffee. Within a month Daneska turned her dream into a reality. With a lot of effort and help from her family, she managed to pull it off.

Carbon Coffee is for the cyclist who goes for a quick ride before work and ends with a good cuppa coffee to start their day well. Not only for the cyclists but also for the runners, the surfers coming home from Strand beach, or the person who wants to pick up a curbside coffee on the way to work, paying in advance.

“For me, good coffee is the most important part,” Daneska says. She is using Terbodore beans, which are roasted in Franschhoek, thus supporting local business.

They also have a brand new, very special addition on their menu, Kool Beans Nitro Cold Brew Coffee.

“We are committed to the grind. Every good barista will tell you that the grind of your beans is the most important part. Thus we are committed to grinding the beans to perfection to produce the best espresso possible. We are committed to more than just that grind. We are committed to the grind of life/work and of course the grind of cycling. After all we are in a Cycle shop.”

As an avid cyclist/runner herself, Daneska noticed that there are a lot of coffee shops in Stellenbosch to cycle to, but very few in Somerset West. She is hoping to create a space where cyclists/runners from around the area will come to. “In the future we would like to expand the size of our menu and offer more exciting additions. We plan ahead, but take it day by day while serving top quality coffee and treats. If you are in the area please stop by, I would love to share a coffee with you.“ Location Turn off at the intersection of the R44 and Gutsche, take the immediate left slip to The Hub center, park in front of Helderberg Cycle World, grab your coffee and get back onto the R44. There is an outside sitting area for anyone who wants to catch a breath of fresh air.

Opening times are from 07:00 – 15:00, Monday to Friday and till 14:00 on Saturdays. A delivery service to office blocks in the near vicinity will be launching soon.

Benguela Cove Estate In Call to End Ban on Wine Sales Benguela Cove recently won the prize for ‘Best Cap Classique’ in South Africa.

Winemag.co.za in its annual awards reviewed 927 wines across 20 wine categories to judge Benguela Cove Joie de Vivre 2017 the best in the Cap Classique sparkling category, scoring 93 points out of 100.

The judges’ tasting notes said of Joie de Vivre, which is 64% Chardonnay and 34% Pinot Noir: “A really complex nose – a floral top note before citrus, peach and red apples plus a little vanilla. The palate has excellent fruit definition, a great line of acidity and a fine mousse, the finish long and dry.”

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate supports the wine industry’s plea to the Government to end the ban on wine sales, safely, because of the sector’s vital role as an employer. Throughout the agricultural and food value chain it creates more than 265,000 jobs, according to the Institute of Cape Wine Masters.

The restriction on wine sales affects sommeliers, wine farm representatives, suppliers, restaurant, retail and tasting room staff, wine educators and media workers – and all their families and dependants. This represents more than R55 billion or 1.1% of the GDP of South Africa, which positively affects the balance of payments through significant exports.

While a financial year-end period comes with many challenges of its own, BEE Verification can add an extra layer of stress to this time. It is best to plan and prepare an annual calendar of critical BEE-related tasks to avoid unnecessary stress for BEE Verification. The following annual critical points will determine your BEE Verification-readiness: WSP/ATR Submissions - It is crucial to submit your Skills Development WSP/ATR. Without proof of your WSP/ATR submission, you will not be able to claim any BEE points for Skills Development (regardless if you have implemented training) because this is a prerequisite for the Skills Development element of BEE. This period of submission is between January and April every year.

Employment Equity Report Submission - If you are a Designated Employer but your EE Report was not submitted during the submission time (September – January every year), you will not be able to claim points on the Management Control element of BEE at the time of your next verification and this may lead to a non-compliant BEE certificate.

Enterprise and Supplier Development - Throughout the year, your procurement and donations’ paperwork must be in place. This means: your suppliers must be BEE compliant and you need proof of their compliance; your agreements, invoices, and letters of acknowledgement must be in order for ESD; and you must keep record and confirmation that your ESD beneficiaries are 51% or more black-owned.

If you fail to complete these critical steps at the due times during the year, your BEE Verification will be impacted if you fail to comply with priority BEE elements.

This could lead to you being discounted a BEE level or being issued with a non-compliant BEE certificate regardless of the effort and expenditure you extended during the year.

CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR POSTPONED As always, the safety of all participants and the well-being of the broader community of Cape Town remains the race organisers’ most important priority in the planning and staging of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. With this in mind, the team at the Cape Town Cycle Tour has been closely monitoring the ongoing developments around the ‘second wave’ of the Covid-19 pandemic.

For several months they have been working hand-in-hand with the authorities and stakeholders around the possibility of hosting a significantly revised version of the Cape Town Cycle Tour in March 2021. Sadly, current circumstances make the hosting of a mass participation event in any format untenable for the immediate future.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust has thus taken the decision to postpone the hosting of the 2021 edition of the event to a later date in the year. The organisers will continue to explore all available options and opportunities that remain open, in terms of hosting a safe and memorable Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Cyclists are encouraged to follow the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s social media channels as the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is looking forward to announcing some exciting news in the next few weeks. RACE ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA - SPIRIT ENCAPSULATED IN SHORT FILM Race Across South Africa (RASA) organisers have released a short film that encapsulates the essence of the 2,150km, non-stop, self-navigated mountain bike ride that starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Wellington.

In this beautiful film, two of the event’s stalwarts, Tim James (nine-time finisher and single speed record holder, 2020) and Mike Woolnough (six-time finisher), talk about what this event means to them, as well as the massive impact it has on the lives of those who experience the Freedom Trail. All footage was shot during the 2020 RASA that took place in October.

“I’m amazed at how, in just seven minutes, this film is able to triumphantly and beautifully capture the essence of the Freedom Challenge and the profound impact it can have on an individual,” said race director Chris Fisher.

“But don’t take my word for it; go see for yourself.” RASA is an unforgettable adventure by bike that takes riders to remote parts of the country where they’ll experience its true splendour and the warm hospitality of its people.

Due to the nature of the terrain and time of year, the event is physically and mentally demanding. Since the route is not marked, riders need to navigate using maps, compass, and narrative directions. They are allowed a maximum of 26 days to complete it.

BE INSPIRED BY RYAN STRAMROOD - SA'S EXTREME SWIMMER South African extreme swimmer and inspirational speaker, Ryan Stramrood, has been nominated for the prestigious World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) ‘Man of the Year’ award. The winner is being chosen through a public online voting system.

The nomination comes after Stramrood was recognised for achieving the record number of crossings from Robben Island to the mainland in June 2020. It was his 109th swim of the challenging crossing between Robben Island and Blouberg beach, which ranges between 7.4km and 11km of cold water.

The award goes to a male swimmer who has shown, through his achievements in 2020, exceptional tenacity, perseverance and a sense of adventure. One of the things that makes the 2020 award particularly notable is that each of the swimmers nominated were able to achieve these feats during a global pandemic.

Ryan Stramrood reached the 108th Robben Island crossing milestone just before lockdown was announced in March 2020, but had to put his swimming plans on hold indefinitely and face the reality that he would not be able to train in open water for the foreseeable future. In June 2020, only days after the lockdown regulations allowed Stramrood back into the ocean, he broke the record despite a lack of proper training for over 10 weeks.

Stramrood set his mind to do the Robben Island swim for the first time in 2003. Since then he has taken on some of the world’s most extreme swims and pushed boundaries in ultra-extreme cold conditions. Some of his achievements include: World First Official Ice Mile in Antarctica, World First USA to Russia Relay, English Channel crossing, Straits of Gibraltar (2 time), and a two time Guinness World Record holder.

ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME FOR MATRICS IN ANTARTICA Five lucky South Africa matrics departed from Cape Town to the icy continent of Antarctica for an environmental adventure of a lifetime. The journey was made possible by a joint venture between Professional Provident Society (PPS) and Matrics in Antarctica, which was founded by global explorer, Riaan Manser, who held a competition to select the winners.

To enter the competition, students simply needed to answer the following question: “If saving nature and the environment is a world problem – how can you help? What can you do in your own hometown that you believe will make a positive impact on the planet and possibly Antarctica?” Those with the best answer were chosen to go on the journey.

The five winners that were chosen were: Thea J Earnest from Mountview Secondary School in KwaZulu Natal, Kelby Barker from Diocesan School for Girls in Eastern Cape, Cobus Burger from Hoërskool Duineveld in the Northern Cape, Boiketlo Lamula from Sedaven High School in Gauteng and Ayakha Melithafa from the Centre of Science and Technology in the Western Cape.

The group is accompanied by Manser, along with a group of distinguished professors from Stellenbosch University lead by Professor Jonathan Jansen.

While in Antarctica, the students will take part in a variety of activities, scientific experiments, survival lessons as well as camping and kayaking. They will also have a chance at setting a new Guinness World Record for the fastest 100-metre sprint on the continent.
