A STORY OF RESCUE, REHABILITATION AND RELEASE

The story of rescue, rehabilitation and release is one that the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation and the NSRI are incredibly proud of. On Thursday, 14 January 2021 they released some of their shelly friends back into the ocean so that they can begin their journey home in warmer waters. The release included 21 loggerheads (Luis, Annie & 19 hatchlings), 1 hawksbill turtle (Olaf) and 1 green turtle called Roo. These turtles were rescued and have been in the care of the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation for the past year or so, after being rescued on beaches from around the Western Cape.
Most of the turtles that are rescued are loggerhead hatchlings that hatched on the northern beaches of KwaZulu-Natal and then caught the warm Agulhas current down the South African coastline. Once they reach the south coast and the current slows, the turtles can end up in the colder surrounding waters, which can cause the turtles to suffer from cold shock, injury and dehydration. When the turtles become compromised, strong winds and currents expel them on our beaches, between March and July every year. Continue Reading Page 3

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain. Celebrating the new year is an exciting experience. The new year represents a new chapter - a time to celebrate and start afresh. The New Year is the perfect time to lose the big crowds and try something different, something more adventurous like: Kayak along the stunning Atlantic Seaboard coastline, take to the skies to experience the beauty of the mother city by helicopter, try Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), paraglide from Sir

If your choice of encrypted messaging app is a toss-up between Signal, WhatsApp and Telegram, do not waste your time with anything but Signal. This isn’t about which has cuter features, more bells and whistles, or is most convenient to use - this is about pure privacy. If that’s what you’re after, nothing beats Signal. WhatsApp recently sparked much debate on 6 January 2021, when they announced change in their terms of service. Informing users that it will share data with Facebook and third parties effective 8 February 2021. Users were told to either agree or discontinue using the platform. Since WhatsApp has decided to delay updating its privacy policy to May 15, 2021 following mass confusion over what data it shares with its parent company, Facebook. Now if Elon Musk’s tweet: "Use Signal" has you looking for a new messenger, here are the key privacy differences in the biggest players right now. Signal - Does not collect data, only your phone number. It’s Free and no ads. Funded by nonprofit Signal Foundation. Signal is fully open-source. The encryption: Signal Protocol. Signal is a typical one-tap install app that can be found in your normal marketplaces like Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store and works just like the usual text-messaging app. It’s an open-source development provided free of charge by the nonprofit Signal Foundation and has been famously used for years by high-profile privacy icons like Edward Snowden. WhatsApp - Data is linked to you: Read about in-depth analysis below. It’s Free with ads and premium versions are available. Funded by Facebook. WhatsApp is not open-source, except for encryption. The encryption: Signal Protocol. There’s a difference between security and privacy. Security is about safeguarding your data against unauthorized access, and privacy is about safeguarding your identity regardless of who has access to that data. On the security front, WhatsApp’s encryption is the same as Signal’s, and that encryption is secure. But that encryption protocol is one of the few open-source parts of WhatsApp, so we’re being asked to trust WhatsApp more than we are Signal. WhatsApp’s actual app and other infrastructure have also faced hacks, just as Telegram has. Jeff Bezos’ phone was famously hacked in January of 2020 through a WhatsApp video message. In December of the same year, Texas’ attorney general alleged - though has not proven - that Facebook and Google struck a back-room deal to reveal WhatsApp message content. A spyware vendor targeted a WhatsApp vulnerability with its software to hack 1,400 devices, resulting in a lawsuit from Facebook. WhatsApp’s unencrypted cloud-based backup feature has long been considered a security risk by privacy experts and was one way the FBI got evidence on notorious political fixer Paul Manafort. To top it off, WhatsApp has also become known as a haven for scam artists and malware purveyors over the years. Telegram - Data linked to you: Name, phone number, contacts, user ID. It’s Free with forthcoming Ad Platform and premium features. Telegram is funded mainly by founder Pavel Durov. Telegram is only partially open-source, The encryption: MTProto. Telegram falls somewhere in the middle of the privacy scale, and it stands apart from other messenger apps because of its efforts to create a social network-style environment. While it doesn’t collect as much data as WhatsApp, it also doesn’t offer encrypted group calls like WhatsApp, nor as much user data privacy and company transparency as Signal. Data collected by Telegram that could be linked to you includes your name, phone number, contact list and user ID. Telegram also collects your IP address, something else Signal doesn’t do. And unlike Signal and WhatsApp, Telegram’s one-to-one messages aren’t encrypted by default. Rather, you have to turn them on in the app’s settings. Telegram group messages also aren’t encrypted. Researchers found that while some of Telegram’s MTProto encryption scheme was open-source, some portions were not, so it’s not completely clear what happens to your texts once they’re in Telegram’s servers. Telegram has seen several breaches. Some 42 million Telegram user IDs and phone numbers were exposed in March of 2020, thought to be the work of Iranian government officials. It would be the second massive breach linked to Iran, after 15 million Iranian users were exposed in 2016. Most recently, its GPS-enabled feature allowing you to find others near you has created obvious problems for privacy. Is WhatsApp more convenient than Signal and Telegram? Yes. Is it prettier? Sure. Is it just as secure? We won’t know unless more of its source code is revealed. But is it more private? Not when it comes to how much data it collects comparatively. For real privacy, Signal is the best option. Article Source: cnet

Performing Horses Move To Cape Town To Attract Tourists For the first time since arriving in South Africa in 1960 the famous South African Lipizzaners get to call Cape Town their home. The Lipizzaner is one of the oldest domesticated breeds of horse still existing in the world today. The SA Lipizzaners who has been a part of the Kyalami community for over 70 years settled in at their beautiful new home, the Mistico Equestrian Centre in Paarl on 20 January. The group has achieved much success over the years, touring the country before establishing regular Sunday performances in Kyalami from 1971. The non-profit company has been in Kyalami since 1960, when former Polish cavalry officer Major George Iwanowski came to South Africa and ended up training Lipizzaners which were rescued from war-torn Europe and brought to the country by Count Jankovich-Besan some years before. The current Lipizzaners are descendants of those horses. In 1960 Major George Iwanowski began developing his equestrian centre in Kyalami and gradually built up a team which travelled countrywide giving performances. In 1969 he built the first indoor hall in South Africa especially for their training, followed by the first regular Sunday performance in 1971. The South African Lipizzaners is an NPC dedicated to the advancement of this proud cultural heritage and the preservation of this most ancient breed of horse. Over the years, the South African Lipizzaners have become an integral part of South Africa’s cultural heritage and often appear on film and television, at various public performances. SA Lipizzaners volunteer, Gina Boxley said the move to Cape Town was purely a financial decision. She added that due to the lockdown the group could not perform for most of 2020, and the shows they did run were at half capacity. This, along with a lack of corporate sponsorship had made it hard to support the group’s 35 stallions and 28 mares. The company had to let go of some of its grooms and riders. “What I will miss most will be visiting the horses in the afternoons when it was just them and me, and hearing them whinny in excitement as I brought them carrots, who did not accompany the group to Cape Town. We hope the move to the Mother City would attract tourists once travel restrictions are eased,” added Boxley,

“We believe that this will provide us with a large and diverse new set of audiences for the Lipizzaners, particularly given the tourists that visit the Cape area during summer. Mistico is the largest livery and show holding venue in the country offering two 950 pax indoor arenas (and a third, even larger, under construction indoor), a 300-guest wedding and conference venue and a weekend restaurant. It is perfectly situated, close to the winelands, to attract both locals and visitors from all over the world! We believe the move to Mistico will ensure the long term sustainability of these very special horses.”
A Story of Rescue, Rehabilitation And Release (Continue from page 1) Once these hatchlings arrive at the Aquarium turtle rehabilitation programme they are admitted as individual patients, and over the following months receive regular medical care, cleaning, daily feeding (twice a day) and lots of love.
As the end of the year approaches and the turtles are healthy, have gained good weight and are behaving like strong turtles, the vet clears them for release. They receive a microchip and are then released off Cape Point back into the warmer water. Their reason for stranding is often quite different and can range from infection to bite injuries, plastic ingestion, boat strike injury and ghost fishing gear, as was the case with Annette back in July 2019. Annette (Annie) named by the NSRI because she was entangled in a net was rescued on Noordhoek beach after having been entangled in fishing gear. Annie underwent intensive critical care in the months that followed as she was incredibly weak, floating with her bum up and not willing to eat. The rehabbers used all available diagnostic tools to determine what was wrong with her, which included two CT-scans, an ultrasound, endoscopes and x-ray studies to attempt to shed more light on the situation. Alongside this diagnostic work, Annie was fed regularly and was provided with inter-coelomic fluids. In November 2019, Annie was moved into the I&J Ocean Exhibit with the hope that she would do well with extra space and depth to swim. This proved to be the case as Annie quickly adapted to her new home and started eating a month later (it took her 5 months to start eating). In the last year, Annie has been a powerful ambassador to all visitors to the Two Oceans Aquarium, teaching them about the dangers of fishing gear and plastic in the ocean. Through visiting Annie, many people have fallen in love with marine life and have been inspired to help protect the oceans. “It’s been such a treat to release these turtles - a total full circle,” said Talitha Noble, Conservation Coordinator of the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation. “And the thing with circles is that they keep going around. As we say goodbye and good luck to these strong and capable creatures, we busily get prepared for a new season of stranded and weak turtles to help and nurture and protect. You can be apart of that. You can be a turtle rescuer, support us in their rehab and help protect the home they are released into.”
Photo: The Release of Luis, Annie & Olaf Photo Credit: Jacques Marais
Turtles are incredible creatures and natural survivors, from the moment they hatch they are on their own and their knowledge and understanding of how to do things is instinctual. This means that even if they spend years in a rehabilitation environment, they will never unlearn how to hunt, swim, forage and fend for themselves.

Diamond Jewellery Design Changing Young Peoples’ Lives Diamond jewellery design is increasingly emerging as a vehicle to spark youth employment, entrepreneurship and innovation among young people in Africa and North America as the continents position themselves to take a greater slice of the global diamond jewellery market.
A key initiative in this regard is the De Beers Group Designers Initiative (DBGDI), a youth beneficiation skills development initiative aimed at giving young jewellers world-class diamond jewellery design and manufacturing skills. DBGDI through the Shining Light Awards has established a growing footprint in each of the De Beers Group’s diamond producer countries: Botswana, Canada, Namibia, and South Africa. The 2020/2021 instalment of the Shining Light Awards (SLA) jewellery design competition invites young diamond jewellery designers to showcase their talent. The SLA, which have existed for 23 years in South Africa, 11 years in Botswana and Namibia and two years in Canada, have created a range of partnerships with tertiary institutions and industry to provide a platform for as many young jewellers as possible to compete to win an opportunity to enhance their jewellery design skills. This year’s design theme ‘The Evolution of Love and Life’, aims to inspire young designers to create innovative and game changing pieces showcasing their interpretation of the theme. The pieces should be versatile and combine commerciality with red carpet elegance, celebrate fresh thinking, showcase the beauty, strength & sustainability of natural diamonds and appeal to a millennial consumer anywhere in the world.
Photo: Shining Light Awards 2015 L - R: Mpho Mokgatle, Louise Kriek, Lilja Hastie, Omphile Sibanda and Julius Brettschneider.
In 2019, the total global jewellery market was valued at approximately $229.3 billion, and was forecast to reach $291.7 billion by 2025, according to global research expert Mahsa Shahbadeh. “Africa and Canada’s share of this market is steadily growing, thanks to the creativity of entrepreneurs, modern production technologies and online sales platforms”, says Peter Phemelo Moeti, Senior Vice President of De Beers Sightholder Sales SA.
Three winners will be selected from each producer country and stand a chance to win a 12-month post-graduate programme at Politecnico di Milano in Milan, the design and fashion capital of the world, a 12-month artisanal goldsmith training programme in South Africa, and a three-month exposure in a De Beers Group business unit. Previous awardees of the SLA have secured employment with international jewellery manufacturing houses, established their own businesses in South Africa and internationally, and are lecturing at tertiary institutions. Entries for the 2020/2021 competition opened on 30 January 2021, and close on 31 March. For more information visit www.shininglightsawards.com
Say Hello to Filmspace - The Airbnb of Film Locations With South Africa’s film industry worth over R12.2 billion and an increasing number of local productions becoming streaming hits, the room for innovation has never been bigger. Founded in the heart of South Africa’s film industry, Cape Town-based Filmspace plans to capitalise on this by streamlining the often resource-heavy location scouting process while giving property owners a chance to make extra cash renting out their homes.
NOW SERVING BRUNCH

Property owners, called hosts, are able to list residential, commercial, studio and mobile property, all of which has dramatically expanded the industry offering. Unique cars, wine farms, homes, mansions, hotels and more are now on the market at substantially lower costs and without the traditional labor-intensive scouting process. Like many leading marketplace platforms like Airbnb, Filmspace allows hosts to complete listings in minutes while still controlling flexible booking rules. Hosts set their own custom rate, and earn money based on individual bookings with factors including production hours, crew sizes, and more playing a role. Better yet, Filmspace does not contain any exclusivity clauses, meaning Airbnb owners are able to supplement their income by further renting out property during off-season or free booking days, all to professional filmmakers. Property owners are also able to charge up to three times what they would normally charge to rent their homes via Airbnb. All payments, automated locations agreements and communication between property owners and filmmakers takes place on the bespoke platform, with Filmspace covering the administrative process and providing R1 million host liability, underwritten by Santam. Much like other successful marketplace platforms, Filmspace charges a commission per completed booking. Filmspace has created a pool of diverse and unusual film locations previously unavailable to filmmakers. The platform boasts over 400 property listings in just a handful of months, including spaces such as the Cederberg’s Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve and the iconic Radisson RED Hotel.
Menu available at www.henrisrestaurant.co.za
Filmspace founder Blanche Franken says, “While studying film, I saw so many projects just never leave the ground. Production is expensive. I wanted to create a platform that would not only allow property owners to make extra money, but to also make the industry more accessible.” By making the industry increasingly accessible for filmmakers and property owners, Filmspace provides much-needed creative and financial growth during this challenging time; our GDP gets a vital boost and cash-strapped South Africans gain a secondary income when they need it most. It’s a win/win for filmmakers and property owners.”

Kool Beans Nitro Coffee is kept in kegs and served on tap, in compostable ecocups that allow you to see the magical dispersion of nitrogen. If you associate nitro with speed, you are correct – it can be tapped in under 5 seconds and is loadshedding resistant (and did we mention the extra speed in your step?) A healthy, delicious drink with a kick that looks like beer, tastes like coffee and is served on tap – who could resist? Delicious Treats And what is coffee without a little treat on the side? From a young age, Daneska loved spending time in the kitchen baking. “It was and is always so satisfying perfecting a recipe and sharing it with the people around me.” They offer a variety of homemade treats ranging from their delicious banana bread, carrot cake and date balls to something savory, mainly ‘Belegte Brötchen’, which are German rolls with special toppings. Coming from a Namibian-German background those definitely had to be on the menu.
It started as a faint idea about two years ago. Daneska Rohrmüller the bubbly owner of Carbon Coffee, wanted to open a coffee shop for the early bird. She is one of those people who are always up early, whether it is to go for a run, cycle or to class but could never find a place that was open early enough. “I wanted to open a place for the early bird like myself. Somewhere you can come to, halfway, during or after a cycle/run.” So there was an idea, but no location. After Daneska finished high school she had no idea what she wanted to do, but decided to study engineering. From the start she knew it was not for her, but continued to push through because she did not have a back-up plan. Then lockdown happened and she knew this was her chance to change direction. Fast-forward 8 months and an amazing opportunity with Helderberg Cycle World came to light – the perfect location for browsing whilst waiting for your coffee. Within a month Daneska turned her dream into a reality. With a lot of effort and help from her family, she managed to pull it off. Carbon Coffee is for the cyclist who goes for a quick ride before work and ends with a good cuppa coffee to start their day well. Not only for the cyclists but also for the runners, the surfers coming home from Strand beach, or the person who wants to pick up a curbside coffee on the way to work, paying in advance. “For me, good coffee is the most important part,” Daneska says. She is using Terbodore beans, which are roasted in Franschhoek, thus supporting local business. They also have a brand new, very special addition on their menu, Kool Beans Nitro Cold Brew Coffee.
“We are committed to the grind. Every good barista will tell you that the grind of your beans is the most important part. Thus we are committed to grinding the beans to perfection to produce the best espresso possible. We are committed to more than just that grind. We are committed to the grind of life/work and of course the grind of cycling. After all we are in a Cycle shop.” As an avid cyclist/runner herself, Daneska noticed that there are a lot of coffee shops in Stellenbosch to cycle to, but very few in Somerset West. She is hoping to create a space where cyclists/runners from around the area will come to. “In the future we would like to expand the size of our menu and offer more exciting additions. We plan ahead, but take it day by day while serving top quality coffee and treats. If you are in the area please stop by, I would love to share a coffee with you.“ Location Turn off at the intersection of the R44 and Gutsche, take the immediate left slip to The Hub center, park in front of Helderberg Cycle World, grab your coffee and get back onto the R44. There is an outside sitting area for anyone who wants to catch a breath of fresh air. Opening times are from 07:00 – 15:00, Monday to Friday and till 14:00 on Saturdays. A delivery service to office blocks in the near vicinity will be launching soon.
Kool Beans Nitro Cold Brew Coffee As the name suggests, Kool Beans coffee is brewed with cold water instead of hot, resulting in a less bitter and acidic, yet full-bodied flavour and served cold for a refreshing experience on a hot summer’s day or after a strenuous cycle. The nitro brew is 100% natural, with zero additives, almost zero calories and a natural creamy taste. Do not be fooled by its creamy consistency, this product is vegan friendly and does not contain any milk – the creaminess and velvety mouthfeel is created by infusing the coffee with fine nitrogen bubbles.

JOIN THE SIZA ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMME A STEPPINGSTONE TOWARDS CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND MAINTAINING THE PLANET
The water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe, the ground we walk on, the mountains we climb and the sea we swim in – these things all form part of the environment that humans and millions of other species on earth live in. Amongst the things we have to do to survive, looking after our water, air, mountains, and seas, have become more important as we emerge from the challenges we had to deal with because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Each individual, corporation, business sector, and government has a responsibility in preserving the environment, but positive change can only be achieved when working together. SIZA enables South African agriculture to be a global leader in ethical labour and environmental sustainability. SIZA provides a platform for agricultural stakeholders to ensure ethical and environmentally sustainable trade. This platform monitors care for the environment and compliance with labour legislation. Our aim is to encourage continuous improvement in practices over time in excess of the minimum legal requirements. The development of sustainable business practices lends itself to efficient operations and cost savings. SIZA implemented the Environmental 2nd-Party Verification programme as part of its drive towards continuous improvement and to manage environmental risks. The Environmental 2nd-Party Verification programme therefore assists with establishing comprehensive management systems, managing risks, and improving performance across the four cornerstones of the environment:
The implementation of such strategies will help to combat climate change and will also reduce energy costs. Efficient waste management is not always an easy task. During the verification process, farms will receive assistance on what can be implemented on their own sites to be compliant with legislation, while also ensuring that waste is managed efficiently to reduce environmental pollution.
SOIL The verification process can help farmers to manage risks related to soil degradation which will help to conserve this resource without which we cannot farm. Furthermore, the implementation of soil health improving practices can help to increase soil health over the long term. Analysing soil and plant nutrient values will ensure that only the needed amounts of fertilisers are applied, which will reduce input costs and reduce the risks for over-fertilisation and pollution. WATER The verification process will assist management to remain compliant with water legislation and improve water-use efficiency (WUE). Calculating the WUE of a crop, i.e., the amount of water used per kilogramme of crop produced, is one of the easiest ways to quantify how well water is managed. ENERGY, MATERIALS & WASTE Energy usage is one of the major contributors to climate change. The verification process will assist with identifying business activities that are energy-intensive and to implement energy conservation strategies.
BIODIVERSITY Everyone has a responsibility towards our environment to make sure that critical ecosystems are protected. The verification process will help to identify areas of conservation and what can be done to protect them. Prioritising areas for invasive alien plant (IAP) clearing will also form part of the verification process. The benefits of efficient IAP clearing and management includes improving water availability and reducing fire risks. Since the implementation of the SIZA Environmental 2nd-Party Verification programme, it has already illustrated progress and successes where farmers have started to measure and monitor their inputs. Benguela Cove Estate In Call to End Ban on Wine Sales Benguela Cove recently won the prize for ‘Best Cap Classique’ in South Africa. Winemag.co.za in its annual awards reviewed 927 wines across 20 wine categories to judge Benguela Cove Joie de Vivre 2017 the best in the Cap Classique sparkling category, scoring 93 points out of 100. The judges’ tasting notes said of Joie de Vivre, which is 64% Chardonnay and 34% Pinot Noir: “A really complex nose – a floral top note before citrus, peach and red apples plus a little vanilla. The palate has excellent fruit definition, a great line of acidity and a fine mousse, the finish long and dry.” Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate supports the wine industry’s plea to the Government to end the ban on wine sales, safely, because of the sector’s vital role as an employer. Throughout the agricultural and food value chain it creates more than 265,000 jobs, according to the Institute of Cape Wine Masters. The restriction on wine sales affects sommeliers, wine farm representatives, suppliers, restaurant, retail and tasting room staff, wine educators and media workers – and all their families and dependants. This represents more than R55 billion or 1.1% of the GDP of South Africa, which positively affects the balance of payments through significant exports. Penny Streeter OBE, owner of Benguela Cove Lagoon WIne Estate, says: “In the Western Cape, in rural economies, the wine sector is the backbone of many communities and towns and makes a huge contribution. As a nation we are increasingly recognised for our premium wines and we have consistently increased our share of the local and global market.” “South Africa has started to make huge inroads into the sparkling wine market internationally, with our Cap Classique competing successfully with French Champagne on wine store shelves and in competitions.”
Penny Streeter says:- “With a cupboard-full of prizes in 2020 for our red and white wines, this top award in Winemag’s sparkling category was a great end to the year. Joie de Vivre is hugely popular and sums up the brand we’ve created at Benguela Cove lagoon: a unique wine experience that’s high quality, fun and contemporary, for everyone to enjoy.” “We just need to see an end as soon as possible to the restriction on wine sales, safely of course, appreciating the distressing consequences of the rising wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and the critical availability of hospital beds.” Although wine sales are not permitted, the entertainment and hospitality facilities are open at Benguela Cove. This includes the Moody Lagoon restaurant, as well as pontoon tours on the lagoon and, for children, Pirate Adventure Golf, the Splash Park and Blackbeard’s Diner. SAVVY WAYS TO CUT COSTS IN A SMALL BUSINESS At a time when many small businesses are struggling to stay afloat, cutting costs can boost their chances of keeping their doors open. Here are easily achievable ways to cut costs, and increase the chance of success. Lower your overheads - Many small business owners are focused on keeping their head above water and making sales, that the task of lowering overhead costs often gets pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. Reduce supply expenses - Business supplies are often at the top of monthly expenditure, so make it a regular practice to re-evaluate who you buy from. At least once a year, compare suppliers and get quotes in to make sure that you’re getting the best prices and terms. Shop around outside of your pool of usual suppliers, and proactively be on the hunt for money-saving bargains. Partner with other businesses - The adage of there being strength in numbers holds true for small business owners, too. Reduce costs by pooling resources with like-minded businesses in your trade area. Common areas of interest could include banding together in order to have better purchasing clout and negotiating power when buying supplies, inventory and equipment. Reconsider traditional services - Getting stuck with a contract for cleaning and maintenance can land you with an expensive bill. Consider hiring a cleaner or handyman that comes in less often, or as and when you need it. Retain good staff - It makes sound business sense to do all you can to retain talented employees as it costs more to rehire. Switch off lights, machines and computers after hours - To help keep energy costs under control, make it a company policy to switch off air-conditioners, nonessentials lights, gadgets and equipment before staff head off home each day. Putting computer monitors into sleep mode will also cut down on unnecessary energy consumption and save money. Cut down on meetings - The next time you’re in a meeting, stop and think about the hourly salary rate you’re paying everyone in the room, and how much money that meeting is costing!
Ask employees to review how many hours a week they spend in meetings and suggest ways to cut these down so that staff can be freed up to actually get work done. Explore a co-working space - One of the biggest expenses a business incurs monthly is the unavoidable cost of buying or renting a workspace. For budding startups, a home-based business, with employees who also work from home, makes economic sense. The business owner is only expected to pay for office space, yet also gets valuable add-ons like high-speed fibre internet, utilities, printing, video conferencing services, slick boardrooms and IT technician services included as part of the overall contract. When in doubt, go without - Do we really need to buy this? Do we really need to replace something? Think every purchase through instead of just spending the money on buying bigger and newer things. By keeping a close eye on the budget and constantly working towards curbing unnecessary spend, you’ll save your business from potentially running into cashflow problems, and then having to implement unpleasant and radical changes.
WHY MARKETING DURING A TOUGH ECONOMY IS CRUCIAL A tough economy and restrictive trading conditions have created uncertainty for many South African companies. However, it is crucial that businesses which aim to grow, continue to promote themselves through marketing activities. It is true when businesses are facing tough times, the first thing most businesses to pull their marketing budget. Many marketing professionals will advise against this strategy. More than ever it is important that you should consider your marketing spend as an investment and not an expense. A vital component when it comes to marketing for new companies is testing marketing vehicles to see which performs and provides the best return on investment. Businesses that have been in business for a considerable amount of time can look at data and know which vehicles work for them. Most companies invest 20% more or less of their resources (marketing budget and time) into marketing. Businesses should continually reinvest this percentage into marketing on an ongoing basis. As time goes on you may be able to decrease your time spent in marketing, but in return monetary resources may need to increase. The key is to find the vehicles that work best for your target market - in newspapers, digital, audio commercials, television commercials, etc. You will find that some people suggest as your business grows to decrease your amount in marketing. Most will firmly disagree with this tactic. You should always be marketing to new potential customers as well as marketing to the repeat consumer. Studies have shown that in previous recessions businesses that continued to invest in marketing saw growth in their businesses, while those that pulled their budgets saw a decrease in sales. The need for businesses to promote themselves during difficult times is well documented, including in a report by the Harvard Business Review. The report stated that marketing and advertising are key for a business to position themselves for growth once the market picks up. “Marketing isn’t optional – it’s a good cost, essential to bringing in revenues from key customers,” stated the report. It went on to warn against cutting all marketing budgets when times get hard, which has been the case with many local companies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
PLANNING AND PREPARING FOR YOUR BEE VERIFICATION With many businesses’ financial year-end taking place in December through February, their BEE Verification will take place during these months. While a financial year-end period comes with many challenges of its own, BEE Verification can add an extra layer of stress to this time. However, your BEE Verification readiness is not a last-minute activity, and skipping critical activities at other times during the year will hinder your BEE Verification-readiness when your financial year-end arrives. It is best to plan and prepare an annual calendar of critical BEE-related tasks to avoid unnecessary stress for BEE Verification. The following annual critical points will determine your BEE Verification-readiness: WSP/ATR Submissions - It is crucial to submit your Skills Development WSP/ATR. Without proof of your WSP/ATR submission, you will not be able to claim any BEE points for Skills Development (regardless if you have implemented training) because this is a prerequisite for the Skills Development element of BEE. This period of submission is between January and April every year. Employment Equity Report Submission - If you are a Designated Employer but your EE Report was not submitted during the submission time (September – January every year), you will not be able to claim points on the Management Control element of BEE at the time of your next verification and this may lead to a non-compliant BEE certificate. Enterprise and Supplier Development - Throughout the year, your procurement and donations’ paperwork must be in place. This means: your suppliers must be BEE compliant and you need proof of their compliance; your agreements, invoices, and letters of acknowledgement must be in order for ESD; and you must keep record and confirmation that your ESD beneficiaries are 51% or more black-owned.
If you fail to complete these critical steps at the due times during the year, your BEE Verification will be impacted if you fail to comply with priority BEE elements. This could lead to you being discounted a BEE level or being issued with a non-compliant BEE certificate regardless of the effort and expenditure you extended during the year. Time to plan your future in Cyprus “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” – Chinese Proverb
The world is still in a state of suspension with Coronavirus: global travel restrictions are a reality and most countries are in some form of lockdown. The good news is that vaccine rollouts are taking place world-wide and hopefully there will be a grip on this pandemic to bring us back to some kind of normality. The timing is perfect to take a breath, do some reflection and start working on putting a plan in place for your and you family’s future in Cyprus. Cyprus is an English-speaking, ex-British colony and full EU member; and is an extremely popular European destination for investors. Not only has it been voted as having THE BEST permanent residency programme on offer, but also huge investment is pouring into the economy with all the infrastructural developments and the enormous natural gas fields.
Being able to rent your property out has the real benefit where you can earn a decent Euro-based income. There is a high demand for both long-term rentals and short-term holiday lets. Not only will your asset generate income for you, but also you have complete peace of mind that the property purchase is legitimate and your ownership is guaranteed. YOUR TRUSTED PARTNERS There’s never been a better time to explore investing in Cyprus. The three main benefits of investing in Cyprus are to secure permanent residency through property investment thereby realising a Plan B, the fantastic lifestyle on offer and the country being a secure investment destination.
Cypriot Realty – a proudly South African company in operation for 13 years with offices in Sandton, Cape Town and Cyprus – is your trusted partner to realise your Plan B in Europe. YOUR PLAN B The permanent residency programme on offer in Cyprus has been voted as the best in Europe because it automatically qualifies 3 generations in the same family line, including dependent children up to age 25 as well as both the parents and the parents-in-law of the main investor. Not only is the application process very quick – it takes just four months for residency to be approved – but the permanent residency status for the whole family is for life, the permit never expires nor needs to be renewed. Another benefit is that you do not need to live in Cyprus to retain your residency status. However Cyprus permanent residents do have the right to apply for citizenship following their physical presence in the country for a number of years, so will in fact follow the naturalisation programme.
EU citizenship or permanent residency, for property investment, for immigration or retirement and starting an EU-based business. We understand investor’s needs, and we have an impressive track record showcasing our success. PROPERTY INSPECTION TRIPS
LOGO THE LIFESTYLE Another huge benefit of investing in Cyprus is the fabulous lifestyle on offer. Cyprus has a relaxed, stress-free lifestyle offering an ideal family environment. Your children & grandchildren will benefit from excellent schools and tertiary education instructions (all Euro-accredited); and the healthcare facilities and medical care are world class. Cyprus is very similar to South Africa. The golf courses are world-class, the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful and Cyprus has 65 blue-flag status beaches, the cleanest seas in the Med and a mountain range where it snows for 3 months. This is a country for enjoying and exploring.
We arrange personalized property inspection trips for you to come to Cyprus to look at the property options and to experience for yourself the lifestyle on offer. THANK YOU FOR BEING AWESOME!!! When it comes to selecting a gift for a client, business contact or potential partner, you may feel quite a bit of pressure to select the appropriate gift. You want to send a message of respect and appreciation while reflecting your own fine tastes. Often corporate gift boxes are sent to show appreciation to your loyal customers or to employees who have worked diligently on behalf of your company. Other times corporate gifts are sent to celebrate a promotion or the start of a new project. No matter why you are sending a gift, the delivery must include high quality products in order to meet its goals.
Boost Employee Morale There was a time when you could hire an employee, train them, invest in them and be assured that they would be loyal for years to come. But times change. The economy has shifted, the work force has different values, and now employees change jobs often, sometimes going to competitors, seeking higher wages, or changing industries completely. While these may be the reasons occasionally, the most prevalent reason for turnover is that many employees feel under-appreciated, or even unappreciated, by the companies for whom they work. No matter how great the pay is, when one’s work seems to goes unnoticed, the loss of morale can be crushing, and many employees end up feeling like a change will do them good. Give your customers and employees the personal touch they deserve that will keep your company right on top of their minds. Remember that any corporate gift is a reflection on your company. At You’re Welcome Gift Design we use only the finest products that can be personalized to your specific requirements.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN DECIDING WHICH DESIGN OF SHUTTER TO USE FOR YOUR HOME Any investment should be considered, whether it is your finances, a new car, your children’s schooling, or even the installation of shutters in your home. Who offers the best product and service? Will it deliver the desired result? Will they add value? These are all points that should be carefully considered. Plantation Shutters; a leading company that excels in the business of addingvalue to your home in the form of beautiful and functional plantation-style shutters, ticks all the boxes when it comes to a superior product, outstanding service and excellent value. There are many factors to consider when deciding which design of shutter would best complement one’s home. The size and shape of your openings, and the space around them, will dictate the design and configuration of your shutters. There is so much that can be done with the flexibility of shutters – which way they stack open, how the louvres open (all joined together or split in the middle) that make shutters such a versatile and functional option. Plantation Shutters add the illusion of space with their clean lines and will be well suited to all types of openings – tall openings, small openings, wide or narrow openings. In fact, shutters can make any opening or an unpleasant opening into quite a statement. Next the colour and finish. The colour palette used in the rooms, and which colour shutter would best complement the décor of one’s home should be considered. Do you want your shutters to be the focus of the room or should they subtly enhance an already vibrant space? Plantation Shutters offers a wide range of timber, aluminium, and security shutters in a variety of colours from the classic white finishes to rich timber stains. There is a style to suit any décor palette. Once you have chosen the aesthetics of your shutters, one should consider what you would like to achieve from a practical point of view. Is thermal protection a concern? Would you like your shutters to provide insulation in winter and cooling in summer? Shutters are easily adjusted to manipulate air flow allowing for eco-friendly and easily controlled heating or cooling. Do shutters need to provide privacy from windows overlooking passing traffic, or do they need to act as a room divider in the interior, such as an entrance to a bathroom? Shutters are excellent at forming a barrier where privacy is required.
If sound is an issue, timber shutters are an excellent insulator. If one needs to block out light to sleep, or perhaps one has a media or work room where computer or TV screens need to be clearly seen, then it’s important to consider that shutters can be adjusted to allow just the right amount of light. This is also key in protecting furniture and valuable paintings that might fade from harsh direct sunlight. When it comes to any door or window opening, security is often a big factor. The range of security shutters include a thick frame and an advanced locking system and guarantee one peace of mind. Finally, and most importantly, budget must be considered. How much can one afford to invest on window and door coverings? Installing Plantation Shutters is well worth the investment. For more information visit www.plantation.co.za

CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR POSTPONED As always, the safety of all participants and the well-being of the broader community of Cape Town remains the race organisers’ most important priority in the planning and staging of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. With this in mind, the team at the Cape Town Cycle Tour has been closely monitoring the ongoing developments around the ‘second wave’ of the Covid-19 pandemic. For several months they have been working hand-in-hand with the authorities and stakeholders around the possibility of hosting a significantly revised version of the Cape Town Cycle Tour in March 2021. Sadly, current circumstances make the hosting of a mass participation event in any format untenable for the immediate future. The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust has thus taken the decision to postpone the hosting of the 2021 edition of the event to a later date in the year. The organisers will continue to explore all available options and opportunities that remain open, in terms of hosting a safe and memorable Cape Town Cycle Tour. Cyclists are encouraged to follow the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s social media channels as the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is looking forward to announcing some exciting news in the next few weeks. Like the race’s Facebook page, Cape Town Cycle Tour, and follow @CTCycleTour on Twitter as well as @ctcycletour on Instagram for regular updates. “Keep cycling, remember to observe all Covid-19 Protocols and be safe.”

RACE ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA - SPIRIT ENCAPSULATED IN SHORT FILM Race Across South Africa (RASA) organisers have released a short film that encapsulates the essence of the 2,150km, non-stop, self-navigated mountain bike ride that starts in Pietermaritzburg and ends in Wellington.
In this beautiful film, two of the event’s stalwarts, Tim James (nine-time finisher and single speed record holder, 2020) and Mike Woolnough (six-time finisher), talk about what this event means to them, as well as the massive impact it has on the lives of those who experience the Freedom Trail. All footage was shot during the 2020 RASA that took place in October. “I’m amazed at how, in just seven minutes, this film is able to triumphantly and beautifully capture the essence of the Freedom Challenge and the profound impact it can have on an individual,” said race director Chris Fisher. “But don’t take my word for it; go see for yourself.” RASA is an unforgettable adventure by bike that takes riders to remote parts of the country where they’ll experience its true splendour and the warm hospitality of its people. Due to the nature of the terrain and time of year, the event is physically and mentally demanding. Since the route is not marked, riders need to navigate using maps, compass, and narrative directions. They are allowed a maximum of 26 days to complete it. 2021 Freedom Challenge event dates: Race to Cradock: 16 - 25 March, Race to Willowmore: 23 March - 2 April, Freedom Circuit: 27 April - 2 May, Race Across South Africa: 23 June - 17 July, Race to Rhodes: 26 June - 5 July, Race to Paarl: 7 - 17 July.

“We are continuously searching for opportunities to make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities,” says Nicholas Harlow, Trustee / The Timothy James Harlow Foundation. “We’ve established a framework comprising of three categories to guide us in choosing candidates.”
“These categories are: 1. Individuals and/or communities whose right to life is in jeopardy, 2. Education and 3. God-given talents.” “By being part of the AfricanX Trailrun we are able to create more awareness around communities that are in need, spread the message of hope, and inspire others to do the same,” continues Harlow. “This year we’d like to give runners the opportunity to get more involved by allowing them to identify the ‘candidate’ that they’d like us to support. It might be one charity, or it might be more than one charity. It all depends on the feedback that we receive. All donations received will go towards the selected charity. We’d like to thank runners in advance for their support. We can’t wait to be part of the 11th edition of the AfricanX Trailrun in March.”

BE INSPIRED BY RYAN STRAMROOD - SA'S EXTREME SWIMMER South African extreme swimmer and inspirational speaker, Ryan Stramrood, has been nominated for the prestigious World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) ‘Man of the Year’ award. The winner is being chosen through a public online voting system. The nomination comes after Stramrood was recognised for achieving the record number of crossings from Robben Island to the mainland in June 2020. It was his 109th swim of the challenging crossing between Robben Island and Blouberg beach, which ranges between 7.4km and 11km of cold water. The award goes to a male swimmer who has shown, through his achievements in 2020, exceptional tenacity, perseverance and a sense of adventure. One of the things that makes the 2020 award particularly notable is that each of the swimmers nominated were able to achieve these feats during a global pandemic. Ryan Stramrood reached the 108th Robben Island crossing milestone just before lockdown was announced in March 2020, but had to put his swimming plans on hold indefinitely and face the reality that he would not be able to train in open water for the foreseeable future. In June 2020, only days after the lockdown regulations allowed Stramrood back into the ocean, he broke the record despite a lack of proper training for over 10 weeks. Stramrood set his mind to do the Robben Island swim for the first time in 2003. Since then he has taken on some of the world’s most extreme swims and pushed boundaries in ultra-extreme cold conditions. Some of his achievements include: World First Official Ice Mile in Antarctica, World First USA to Russia Relay, English Channel crossing, Straits of Gibraltar (2 time), and a two time Guinness World Record holder. Photo: Ryan Stramrood - Photo Credit: Caleb Bjergfelt Since his 109th crossing in June, Stramrood has completed the Robben Island swim While his current talks and workshops carry the same themes of resilience a further five times. Since his Ice Mile swim in Antarctica in 2014, Stramrood has been sharing his learnings from his extreme swims, as a global inspirational speaker. In the past thinking and grit, he says the needs of corporate teams have evolved during year, many people have faced unemployment, been forced to reinvent their careers or the pandemic: “I have found that people feel detached. Teams are feeling transition to working from home, and keeping a strong mindset has been more important stuck and frustrated in their homes and are needing to connect.” than ever. “Stop chasing the light at the end of the tunnel. ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME FOR MATRICS IN ANTARTICA Five lucky South Africa matrics departed from Cape Town to the icy continent of Antarctica for an environmental adventure of a lifetime. The journey was made possible by a joint venture between Professional Provident Society (PPS) and Matrics in Antarctica, which was founded by global explorer, Riaan Manser, who held a competition to select the winners. To enter the competition, students simply needed to answer the following question: “If saving nature and the environment is a world problem – how can you help? What can you do in your own hometown that you believe will make a positive impact on the planet and possibly Antarctica?” Those with the best answer were chosen to go on the journey. The five winners that were chosen were: Thea J Earnest from Mountview Secondary School in KwaZulu Natal, Kelby Barker from Diocesan School for Girls in Eastern Cape, Cobus Burger from Hoërskool Duineveld in the Northern Cape, Boiketlo Lamula from Sedaven High School in Gauteng and Ayakha Melithafa from the Centre of Science and Technology in the Western Cape. The group is accompanied by Manser, along with a group of distinguished professors from Stellenbosch University lead by Professor Jonathan Jansen.
