Changing the narrative of South Africa with Gaven Sinclair taking one small step at a time

Gaven Sinclair, SA’s top extreme endurance adventurer, life coach, motivational speaker and Recipient of the Purple Hearts SA Award, is no stranger to the challenges of living with a lifestyle condition. Gavin has been running the Heel2Heal Challenge along the coastline of South Africa from Gqeberha to Cape Town to raise awareness for health and wellness. His goal is to complete the run by the first week of November and inspire those living with chronic conditions to take up the challenge and start with one small step each day. He partnered with Syntro-P Wellbeing to share a story of partnership and hope with the Heel2Heal Challenge. Recent research states that South Africa is one of the unhealthiest countries in the world, and more than 60% of the adult population is living with a chronic condition. It is this entropy that prompted BrandMed to bring together a team of leading South African experts to create a revolutionary, virtual prescribed health and wellbeing programme - a first of its kind for people diagnosed with chronic conditions which include diabetes, eating disorders, heart disease, obesity, asthma, hypertension and many more. By providing dietary guidelines, exercise and movement routines, breathing techniques, life skills, home monitoring solutions and educational insights, Syntro-P Wellbeing believes that by helping South Africans change their behaviour, they can help change society as a whole. Gaven Sinclair rose to fame in 2017 when he cycled for more than 10 000 km from the Cape to Cairo. Today, Gaven is unarguably recognised as South Africa’s top solo, unsupported, extreme endurance adventurer having completed a 4000 km run across 4 African countries in 2018; a 5 km swim from Ilha de Mozambique to Coral Lodge in 2019; and a 388 km run along the coast of Mozambique in 2020. Additionally, Gaven is the founder of Get Lost in Africa; and has secured his reputation as a leading motivational speaker, life coach and humanitarian activist.

| Celebrating 92 years of Cableway being operational Did you know that the Table Mountain Cableway officially opened to the public on October 4, 1929? Travellers initially took a trip up Table Mountain in a wooden cable car with a tin roof. It took the cable car nearly ten minutes back then to carry 19 people and a conductor up the 704 metres to the summit. Since its inception, the cableway has transported over 29 million visitors. A lot has changed over the decades, but the cableway remains one of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attractions. October has been a special month for the Mother City’s icon as the cableway celebrated 92 years of being operational. The beloved activity has offered local and international guests some of the most incredible experiences over the past 92 years. The cable car carries up to 65-passengers and has a rotating floor that ensures visitors get a 360-degree aerial view. The cherry on top is that Table Mountain has been named Africa’s leading tourist attraction by the 2021 World Travel Awards (WTA)! This is not the first time the icon has snatched the top prize, as it has held this position since 2019. Cape Town’s favourite attraction went up against the likes of Mountain Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, and even home favourites, Robben Island and the V&A Waterfront. Table Mountain is also in the running to be voted as the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction.

| Small business retail initiatives boost growth This year alone, the mall has welcomes eight new tenants, with an additional eight new stores opening in the coming months, adding more than 2,730m2 of retail space to its 2020 offering. Table Bay Mall has continued to show positive growth compared to other shopping centres.

Table Bay Mall, situated on Cape Town’s Western Seaboard, has announced a host of new tenants that will join their retail portfolio in the lead up to Christmas. This growth in new retail stores and brands has been enhanced by the shopping mall’s commitment to supporting small businesses and ensuring their on-going success.

A unique Table Bay Mall initiative, The Fashion Cube, is set to open in November. This newly-built and designed 360m² retail space will consist of 32 retail units where small business fashions brands display their product ranges in a custom-designed retail space. Despite the economic strain experienced by the retail industry over the past 18 months, shopping malls have reported a recovery in footfall and retail sales. In fact, lockdowns have favoured community and regional malls such as Table Bay Mall that give consumers a quick in-and-out shopping experience.

Over the last two years, they have created retail spaces dedicated to showcasing small business brands, such as The Creative Cube, The Food Cube, the Table Bay Mall Market, the annual Festive Market and the soon to open, Fashion Cube. To date, they have been able to successfully house 130 small locally-made small businesses. According to Rian Thompson, Centre Manager at Table Bay Mall they wanted to step out of the normal retail box and open retail space to these amazing small businesses.

| Get to know the West Coast With an adventures road trip

To get to know the West Coast with a road trip - you have to taste a culture to understand it. The West Coast culture is about giving as much as you can and more – and it is no different when it comes to the food. The West Coast Way Foodie Route showcases the relationship between passion, innovation and food. Storytelling and earthy hospitality is part and parcel of the West Coast. As the Foodie Route is a self-drive circular route – as a day trip, short break from Cape Town or extended West Coast holiday – it is up to you whether you want to linger longer. The Foodie Route, which was developed by West Coast Way, includes some of the most beautiful and interesting outlying towns and locations on the Cape West Coast such as Langebaan, Saldanha Bay, Jacobsbaai, Paternoster, Cape Columbine, St Helena Bay, Shelley Point, Velddrif, and Hopefield.

As global travel catches a glimmer of hope, dormant flight paths are reawakening, with embattled airlines rearing to capitalise on a post-lockdown passenger boom.

When experiencing the Foodie Route, you have to chew on a bokkom (whole, salted and dried mullet) when visiting Bokkomlaan in Velddrif, eat fresh fish, mussels, oysters, prawns, crayfish or a seafood platter at one of the many acclaimed restaurants. The Foodie Route showcases attractions including the West Coast National Park, West Coast Fossil Park, Saldanha Bay Cultural Village and Museum, and the Simply Bee Observation Centre in Hopefield.

In October Air France resumed the Paris/Cape Town flights, Edelweiss resumed the Zurich/Cape Town route, while Lufthansa added additional frequencies on the Frankfurt route and the Munich flights resumed. Most African carriers have already resumed operations to Cape Town. We look forward to welcoming visitors from the UK back to the Western Cape, with the first British Airways flight between London Heathrow and Cape Town International Airport scheduled to resume from 1 November 2021. The airline said it would also restart services to Cape Town, offering three flights a week in November, before moving to a double daily service in December. Etihad announced that it would start flying to Johannesburg and Cape Town on 25 November. These South African routes will be serviced three times a week, with flights on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with 28 Business Studios, 78 Economy Space seats and 184 Economy seats, will operate between Abu Dhabi and South Africa. The United Airlines New York (Newark) to Cape Town will resume their operation to Cape Town from 1 December 2021 with 3 flights per week, while Virgin Atlantic has announced the relaunch of its direct flight service from London Heathrow to Cape Town three times a week from 17 December. KLM, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, and Qatar will continue to operate their year-round schedules.

| Wolfgat Named Best

Restaurant in Africa, and Top 50 in the World

The fabulous West Coast eatery, Wolfgat restaurant in the small fishing village of Paternoster – a two-hour drive from Cape Town – has been named as the 50th Best Restaurant in the World. This West Coast eatery has also been named as Africa’s Best Restaurant in the latest awards ceremony for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021. “Given the extremely challenging past year-and-a-half we’ve faced globally, especially in the hospitality industry, recognition of this kind comes as a welcome morale boost, as well as an incentive to keep doing what we do in our small way – moreover since our slightly unconventional, West Coast approach to food and service does not necessarily fit the average idea of what constitutes ‘fine dining’, talented chef Kobus van der Merwe said.

We also welcome larger groups, our top floor has been renovated and can be used for private functions. Our inviting, comfortable dining room is the perfect place to enjoy a great meal.

“I am immensely proud of the passionate Wolfgat team: Rochelle Karolus, SheEarl Pietersen, Emily Williams, Emmerson Bester and Alicia Bester – who, with no formal hospitality training, are recognised for their hard work among the best in the industry, internationally. What a rewarding moment for the community of Paternoster, and a shining example for the next generation of young South Africans.” The building, about 130 years old, with gorgeous views out to sea, lies above a series of calcrete chambers that were most recently occupied 2000 years ago by Khoikhoi, who ate the same kind of foods he now serves, from plants to seafood. Chef Kobus is a forager who loves nothing more than creating Strandveld food using plants that have adapted to the harsh coastal conditions. For instance, his menus include edible succulents, seaweed, wild herbs and other plants that complement the seafood focused menu. Restaurateur Kobus van der Merwe shot to fame a couple of years ago when Wolfgat was named Best Restaurant in the World by the inaugural World Restaurant Awards in February 2019 in Paris, also winning the remote location prize.

WEST COAST SHORES West Coast Shores Guesthouse owner/managers, Ben and Roz Havenga, made their permanent move to the West Coast from KZN after many coast-to-coast trips over the last four decades. Having designed and built their dream beach home on Moerie-se-Baai (the sixth of the seven Jacobsbaai bays), they then fully renovated an opposite property to their same high standards and from August 2020 began to share the Moerie-se-Baai magic from their stunning West Coast Shores Guesthouse – albeit during a very tough time in the hospitality industry.

Luxury Comfort

All suites and facilities at the guesthouse have been uniquely furnished and finished in their own style, which they term “Luxury Comfort”. A shared delight in building and design from their very different backgrounds has resulted in high end and eclectic finishes and interiors that are also liveable and functional, while being harmonious to the eye and the soul. Redesign of the original house provided a variety of unique and spacious suites at the guesthouse – all offering queen sized beds with percale linens for an excellent night’s sleep. One suite has the option of being converted to a “family” suite by including a separate small bedroom with two single beds. The guesthouse offers free uncapped Wi-Fi and some suites include DSTV, with others specifically designed to be TV-free.

experience the magic

A bit further afield there is windsurfing in Langebaan, and no visit to the area is complete without a visit to the impressive Fossil Park. There are several game parks in the area, and the various working harbours, marinas, and the Berg River always provide further activities and things to keep one occupied. Set aside time in the late afternoons to gaze upon the amazing skyscapes and sunsets in awe.

Need a Reason to Stay at West Coast Shores?

Guests find West Coast Shores Guesthouse provides answers for many of their needs. The guesthouse is primarily a peaceful breakaway spot for couples, friends, and small family units seeking short beach or touring holidays – from two to seven nights. In addition, the hosts will always try to accommodate special requests – from organising surprise proposals at sunset, family gatherings, ladies’ weekends, small group corporate conferencing, team building, solo retreats, honeymoon packages, date nights, or even product & personnel training breakaways. Business travellers enjoy the easy access to the industrial and business zones of Saldanha and Vredenberg, the free Wi-Fi and - as West Coast Shores is a VAT registered entity - the tariff is even more competitive. Short value-adding activities to complement group bookings can be arranged such as wine or cheese tasting, or tailor-made sessions in business skills, selfdevelopment, and entrepreneurship. Solo vacationers who are looking for solitude or timeout in a safe and relaxing space, find the guesthouse and its environs is a perfect place. Jacobsbaai is not as “discovered” or busy with day-trippers as most coastal towns.

Explore the West Coast Foodie Route Being situated in the middle of the “Foodie Route”, the area offers a plethora of culinary experiences – from West Coast fish-n-chips-on-the-quayside to fine dining and everything in between – all within less than 30 minutes’ drive. Most guests find exploring these places – often on recommendations from their hosts, who can assist with planning day trips and “mustsee’s” according to personal interests - is a big part of their stay. Jacobsbaai and its nearby towns are famous for restaurants, “padstals”, markets, cafés, wine, gin, beer, cheese, olives, preserves, salt, toffee, honey, ice-cream, and many other foodie experiences.

Where is West Coast Shores?

Just ninety minutes up the R27 from Cape Town International Airport, Jacobsbaai is a small residential coastal village between Vredenberg and Saldanha. Moerie-se-Baai in Jacobsbaai is a place of friendship. People gather spontaneously to chat while walking, children play together in the quiet cul-de-sac and on the beach. This is where people arrive as strangers and leave as friends.

With all these mouth-watering options available, it's no surprise that most guests enjoy all their meals off-site. However, West Coast Shores does offer a light breakfast on order. In addition, the two first floor suites at West Coast Shores Guesthouse have their own kitchenettes with dining areas. All other suites have tea/coffee stations with bar fridges. The guesthouse braai room – fully equipped - is available for guests to book.

Things to do — slow and not so slow

Guests can use the guesthouse double kayak in the bay, go walking or cycling on many trails in the area, go fishing, swimming, or even surfing. Just outside the village, guests will find the newly established bio-reserve and the renowned fairy village. Bird watching, bunny and tortoise spotting and other wildlife sightings present treasured moments.

West Coast Shores Guesthouse now invites you to “experience the magic” and become captivated with the beauty and the peace. Your hosts, Ben and Roz, look forward to discussing your requirements and providing you with a custom quote – the first stage of your journey. KNOCKDOWN F URNITURE TO

DIY FOR!

Pikasso Cabinets started off in November 2014 as a traditional kitchen cupboard manufacturer in Stellenbosch. At the beginning of 2015 we were fortunate to land a contract to refurbish an existing student accommodation establishment of 400 flats.

BOOKSHELVES

We realise early in the contract that we need to position ourselves to do mass production, as that is the key to sustainable profitability. However, there always has been a perception in the market that all mass production items are of lower quality. To change that perception was one of our biggest challenges. During 2017 we moved to Brackenfell to a bigger and better premises. We obtained better equipment to ensure that the speed at which we manufacture do not affect the quality of our products. At the beginning of 2019 we saw an opportunity to manufacture flat pack melamine furniture for the DIY market, as the majority of South Africa’s DIY furniture offerings are imported and mostly from countries with questionable quality records. We started off with only three products, a desk, bookshelf and bedside table. Since then we expand our offerings to more colours and some more furniture types to choose from. Recently we also added kitchen units for the hardcore DIYers! Being a family-owned business run by father and son duo, we love detail and really put a lot of effort and time into the designing of our furniture. Our motto is quite simple, “If it is not good enough for us, it is definitely not good enough for our customers.” At the beginning of 2020 we started to sell our products on Takealot and also export to our neighbour countries. Pikasso is fortunate to have a very well-trained, focused MINI WARDROBES and motivated Team of employees with all the necessary skills to ensure that our products are manufactured and packed to the prescribed quality. The collective knowledge of our Team in the cupboard manufacturing industry exceeds 80 years.

BEDSIDE TABLES

It is important to us to listen to what our customers had to say in their feedback on how they experienced our products. We love constructive criticism as it helps us on our path to excellence. We constantly review, develop and redevelop our products to keep up with the new trends on the market. We strive to be the best cost provider in the industry. We believe our furniture range on offer is modern, easy to assemble, reasonable priced and of good quality.

MODERN DIY CABINETS Pikasso has a no-nonsense return policy. E-commerce giant Takealot to open massive

New distribution centre in Cape Town in 2022 Real estate developer Atterbury says construction of a new direct current distribution centre (DC) for online retailer Takealot in Cape Town is underway and will launch in August 2022. The 24,000-square-meter facility consists of 22,000-squaremeter warehouse space and 2,000-square-meter offices, and is designed to provide Takealot with expansion options to add 50,000-square-meter warehouse in the early stages. “The new Takealot DC is designed with sustainability in mind, with dedicated solar power generation facilities, energy-efficient lighting systems, rainwater harvesting systems, and water-saving xeriscape landscaping. It offers a clear rack height of 18 meters and a special floor,” says Atterbury. The developers said a 6,700-squaremeter Takealot Customer Collection Centre (including expansion opportunities that could grow to 17,000 square meters) is also under construction at Richmond Park. The Customer Collection Centre is ready for Takealot to open trading in March 2022. Located in the north district of Richmond Park, the new DC is less than 1 km from the park’s retail-focused south district customer centre. It’s also a few kilometres from Takealot’s large logistics centre in nearby Montague Park, adding to the presence of online retailers in the region.

Cape Town's first floating solar pilot project

Paving the way for a more sustainable city Globally, floating solar has rapidly become the third pillar of the Solar PV industry. The City of Cape Town has become the first municipality to install a floating solar photovoltaic (PV) system with partners Floating Solar (Pty) Ltd, the Water Research Commission and the University of Cape Town. The floating solar PV pilot, which has been established at the City’s Kraaifontein Wastewater Treatment Works, includes a floating solar PV array as well as a groundmounted PV system to determine evaporation savings and relative energy generation performance of floating solar PV technology. This is an innovative research study where data is being collected over a 12-month period to potentially inform the design of larger utility scale floating solar PV projects over the next few years through competitive bid processes.

“The City has a target to achieve 300 MW of renewable energy generation by 2030, with 50 MW of this comprising City-owned solar PV plants. The City has been fighting to move away from the sole reliance on Eskom and to diversify the energy mix for cleaner and more affordable and secure power for all. This type of project is a tangible example of how we can build a more sustainable future city and how the green economy can be harnessed for the sustainable, and inclusive, economic recovery we require especially after Covid-19,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy and Climate Change, Councillor Phindile Maxiti. The Water and Sanitation Department continues to explore a range of innovative concepts that could in future enhance water security and sustainability of its operations. City officials are willing to think outside the box, and this is so important for ongoing adaptability and resilience.

Groote Schuur Hospital

Launches robotic-assisted surgical system Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) in Cape Town will become the first public sector hospital in Africa to perform robotic-assisted surgery in the treatment of a wide range of conditions, with its first patient expected in February 2022. The da Vinci Xi fourth generation Robot which will be used in theatres at the hospital are truly a historic event for the province. The System represents four generations and nearly 20 years of learning how to enhance surgical performance by creating a natural extension of the surgeon’s eyes and hands. The System has broader capabilities than prior generations of da Vinci Systems. The da Vinci Xi can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for complex, multi-quadrant surgeries. The new technology allows for minimally invasive surgery for complex diseases and conditions in gynaecology, urology, cardiothoracic, colorectal and general surgery. According to the hospital, some benefits of using the robot means patients will have a quicker recovery time, less pain and scaring and a reduced risk of infection and blood loss. The surgery itself provides for improved visualization due to magnified 3D imaging, ability to change colour visualization to better identify structures, which leads to more precise surgery and improved clinical and functional outcomes.

Boost for Western Cape as UK moves SA from Red List Fully vaccinated visitors to South Africa returning home to the UK will no longer have to endure quarantine. This change is a major boost for Western Cape tourism and inward investment as Brits plan their 2022 holidays, says entrepreneur Penny Streeter, owner of Benguela Cove Lagoon Estate. Welcoming the removal of South Africa from the UK’s red list of travel destinations, Western Cape Member of the Executive Committee for finance and economic opportunities David Maynier announced a strategy to attract visitors back to the province. This includes promotional programmes on its social media account @DiscoverCTWC and also the “Neverending Tourist” consumer campaign, timed to target the UK’s peak period for booking holidays. “We are seeing a surge in enquiries from the UK. People want to escape their cold autumn, as well as the shortages of fuel and staff, and possibly empty shop shelves this Christmas. The famous ‘swallows’ are set to return - Brits seeking the sunnier climes and great food and wine here. The currency exchange rate ensures terrific value for a holiday for Brits and other Europeans,” says Penny Streeter.

“So, it is easy for a Brit to remain in touch with work while they are here, living in a holiday home.”

Once they have visited South Africa, overseas visitors retain fond memories of the country and especially its wine and vineyards, she says. This creates further revenue opportunities from wine sales when they return home:

“All of us involved in the Hermanus tourism trade - and that’s every shop and hospitality venue - need to be actively marketing for this overseas business. In 2019, some 194,900 UK tourists visited the Western Cape, spending on average R24,200 each. Let’s top that in 2022.”

Wine Club - “Subscriptions to our wine club in the UK skyrocket after the tourist season. Subscribers tend to be loyal; they tell their friends about our wines, and that leads to more sales. It is the same in Germany, France and the USA. The lifetime value of each visitor can be huge.” Interest in Benguela Cove wines has continued to climb following a string of national and international wine awards that Benguela Cove has won. Most recently this included the annual Michelangelo Wine and Spirit Awards, where the estate achieved three Double Gold, three Gold and two Trophy awards. This is the largest international wine and spirits competition in Africa, held in South Africa since 1997. Penny Streeter also anticipates new inward investment opportunities from property sales to visitors from overseas. British tourists have traditionally looked to Spain for buying a second home in the sun, but post-Brexit there are major residency restrictions and concerns over property rights. “With English spoken and great beaches and hotels, Cape Town is a major attraction as an international fun destination. Yet, it is only ten hours away by overnight flight, with just one or two hours’ time difference with the UK.”

“Even now, Brits and other Europeans will be online researching answers to such questions as - what are the best holiday destinations in South Africa? For me, the answer is Hermanus and the Western Cape. As business people, we need to be ready with the answers and good reasons why they should want to visit us.” Visitors to Benguela Cove can enjoy a ‘Bottomless Bubbly Brunch’ at weekends. Byron Carr performs live jazz every Saturday in November, and The Juan Casey Rock Show is on 11 December. The estate still has some spaces remaining for bookings for Christmas Eve Dinner, Christmas Day Lunch and a Boxing Day Picnic. For more information visit www.benguelacove.co.za

MSC Cruises will resume its South African sailings on 6 December 2021 following approvals in the most recent government gazette. MSC Orchestra, a popular ship for South African holidaymakers, will homeport in Durban and Cape Town for the local 2021/22 season and offer 2, 3, 4 and 7-night voyages up to 11 May 2022. The vessel has recently undergone a major refurbishment programme and replaces the MSC Musica that was originally earmarked for South Africa in the upcoming cruise season. MSC Orchestra will welcome guests on a total of 41 local cruises from both Durban – with embarkation at the soon-to-be inaugurated KwaZulu Natal terminal - and Cape Town, providing South African cruisers with a wide choice of options to suit their holiday needs. Highlights include Pomene Bay in Mozambique – a marine safari experience complete with its beach club, Portuguese Island and other destinations in Southern Africa. “We are now eagerly awaiting the relevant authorities in South Africa to issue specifics of their health and safety guidelines which can be built into its protocol, as required.” “We are delighted to have received confirmation and approval from the government that cruising and with it our local season can proceed. I believe that our return to sailing will provide a welcome boost to the South African economy in terms of direct and indirect employment, as well as offering safe and relaxing cruise holidays,” said Ross Volk, Managing Director, MSC Cruises South Africa. The planned 14-night New Year’s Eve cruise during the coming season has also been altered into three 4-night cruises and one 2-night sailing as a result of a lack of available ports in the original itinerary.

Investing Offshore – Create a meaningful legacy Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity, so now is the time to implement your Plan B in Europe! Creating a Plan B to protect against both political risk as well as economical instability are 2 of the main reason that many South Africans are looking offshore. The prospect of putting together a meaningful legacy that protects the investor and his/her family’s future is an exciting option worth exploring. Europe remains being the preferred geographic location for many investors as the lifestyle on offer is appealing, the opportunities are enticing and Europe is the world’s largest trading block. Europe’s stable economy, decreasing unemployment rates and ongoing political stability has cemented it as being a safe destination for our hard-earned ZAR. Cyprus, an English-speaking, ex-British colony and full EU member, has been voted as having THE BEST permanent residency programme available, immediately benefitting the investor and his/her family with many attractive benefits. There are currently 3 residency options available: 1. The Fast Track residency programme: permanent residency is secured in 2 months 2. The Slow Track residency programme: permanent residency is secured in 2 years 3. The Immigration programme: The Fast Track programme is very attractive because it gives 3 generations in the same direct family line the legal right to live in Cyprus without having to go through onerous immigration processes should they wish to make a permanent move. All dependent children up to age 25, plus both the parents and the parents-inlaw qualify for residency on the same property purchase under the main investor. The property can be used as an investment tool to earn a Euro-based income; and there is no need to live in Cyprus for the residency permits to remain valid. No other programme in Europe offers this!

On the Slow Track programme siblings, non-related investors and multiple investors can buy a property together and still each secure residency in their own right! This is a unique benefit in Cyprus - as most other countries do not allow multiple investors or require that you either live in the country or have a prescribed minimum investment in property. An astute offshore property investment that works for you in the short, medium and long term is the achievement of a lifetime. In Cyprus investing in the Fast Track residency programme will reap financial rewards and lifelong benefits. Can you afford not to take advantage of this while this programme is still open? Cypriot Realty – a proudly marketing company in operation for more than 13 years – can assist you. We are recognised and respected as Southern Africa’s authoritative offshore investment specialists, promoting Cyprus as an ideal destination for acquiring permanent residency, property investment, immigration or retirement and starting an EU-based business - we understand investor’s needs. Contact us for a confidential meeting to discuss how we can help you realise your and your family’s Plan B in Europe.

What Is Montessori?

Littlehill Montessori Preschool tells us more! Montessori has fast become a household name in South Africa as an alternative form of education for children. However, there is still some mystery around what exactly the Montessori philosophy entails and how it differs from a more traditional way of schooling. In a nutshell, Montessori is a holistic approach which values all areas of the child’s development: physical, social, emotional and cognitive. This child-centered method of education involves child led activities (referred to as “work”) in classrooms with children of different ages, guided by a directress (teacher) who encourage independence among the students. Above all, the Montessori philosophy is meant to be an “aid to life”, a methodology to help each child fulfil their unique potential, discovering and developing their personal contributions to the world. As a parent, choosing a preschool for your child is a big decision, especially when it comes to schools that have a different approach to education, such as LittleHill Montessori. You might wonder if Montessori suits every child? The short answer is yes! The Montessori approach has been used successfully with children from all socioeconomic levels. All children are unique, and Montessori offers an individual programme tailored to the strengths and challenges of each child, to help them learn according to their interests and at their own pace.

Enrolments are now open for LittleHill Montessori The Huntsman & LittleHill Fynbos. “Our schools welcome learners who are both residents & non-residents of the estate.” To view LittleHill The Huntsman, To Book a tour Contact 061 164 7578 or huntsman@littlehill.co.za

South Africa becomes first African country to offer

Marine Sciences in school South Africa has become the first country on the continent to offer Marine Sciences as a high school subject, with the first batch of matriculants set to write their matric exams this year. Marine science was first offered in three node schools in the Western Cape in 2019. The following year, it was recognised as an official school subject, and in 2021 it was included in the school curriculum. Since then, a number of students have been receiving tuition/instruction in the subject at the node schools and through the foundation’s online learning programme. The Two Oceans Aquarium staff has supported the schools with teaching resources and content. The subject is made up of four pillars; Marine Biology, Oceanography, Ocean Ecosystems, and Humans and the ocean, incorporating 85 topics including marine phyla, the chemistry of water, gas laws, sustainable seafood, aquaculture and marine protected areas. It is that time of the year when grade nines are expected to make their first big career choice, which is choosing their subjects for matric.

The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation is using this time to remind learners that marine science can be chosen as an eighth subject choice for 2022. Marine science is already being presented in some node schools and is also available for online study. The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation will be offering a three-year online Marine Sciences curriculum course for children from Grade 10-12. Applications for the next intake of 2022 Grade 10 students opened on 25 August 2021.

Google to invest

$1 billion in Africa over five years Google plans to invest $1 billion in Africa over the next five years to ensure access to fast and cheaper internet and will back startups to support the continent’s digital transformation, it said on 6 October. The unit of U.S. tech company Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) made the announcement at a virtual event where it launched an Africa Investment Fund, through which it will invest $50 million in startups, providing them with access to its employees, network and technologies. Nitin Gajria, managing director for Google in Africa told Reuters in a virtual interview that the company would among others, target startups focusing on fintech, e-commerce and local language content. “We are looking at areas that may have some strategic overlap with Google and where Google could potentially add value in partnering with some of these startups,” Gajria said. In collaboration with not-for-profit organisation Kiva, Google will also provide $10 million in low interest loans to help small businesses and entrepreneurs in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa so they can get through the economic hardship created by COVID-19. Small businesses in Africa often struggle to get capital because they lack the necessary collateral required by banks in case they default. When credit is available, interest rates are usually too high. Google said a programme pioneered last year in Kenya in partnership with Safaricom that allows customers to pay for 4G-enabled phones in instalments would be expanded across the continent with mobile operators such as MTN, Orange and Vodacom.

Gajria said an undersea cable being built by Google to link Africa and Europe should come into service in the second half of next year and is expected to increase internet speeds by five times and lower data costs by up to 21% in countries like South Africa and Nigeria.

FOR Red Bull King of the Air IN DECEMBER The competition – scheduled to take place at Kite Beach in Cape Town on the windiest day between 18 November and 3 December 2021 – will feature an all-star list of previous winners, local favourites and up-and-coming hot shots. The rider list initially comprised the Top Three finishers from 2020; the winner of the Fly-To Red Bull King of the Air satellite event, as well as video entrants. The 2020 event saw Hawaiian top gun, Jesse Richman out-class past champions Nick Jacobsen (DEN) and Aaron Hadlow (UK) to claim his second crown. Jesse, unfortunately injured, will be replaced by South African Michael Mac Donald. Also joining them will be three-time champion Kevin Langeree. According to Sportive Director Sergio Cantagalli, the event committee was overwhelmed with the number of entries. The panel of judges selected the top video entries by judging the riders on the same criteria as they would, if they were performing live during the event. “It’s important to remember that Red Bull King of the Air is not ‘just’ a Big Air contest, we aim to reward the most complete Big Air rider in the world: the one rider that brings the complete package of height, power, extremity, technicality and innovation to the table on the day.” According to Cantagalli ‘variety’ in terms of the types of tricks performed, also played a big part in the video selection, and will no doubt be a big asset in how the riders perform in the big event.

I Love My Hoek campaign forms part of the Franschhoek Restaurant Appeal, which aims to raise enough money to help those affected establishments in the region, who have felt the biggest impact of the recent restrictions and more so the COVID-19 pandemic. Hoekcoin is simply a rewards programme to help boost local tourism within the Franschhoek Valley With a list of over 30 participating businesses, visitors will be spoilt for choice. These include La Petite Colombe, Reubens, Protégé, Maison at Chefs Warehouse, Arkeste, Le Bon Vivant, French Connection, Oku & Yama, Boschendal Bistro and Terra del Capo Antipasto Bar, among others.
