WHY ARE PEOPLE
SEMIGRATING
What's Inside
This Month's Edition?
TO CAPE TOWN & THE WESTERN CAPE?
More residents from other South African provinces are semigrating to Cape Town and the Western Cape than ever before - snapping up properties close to good schools, amenities, and lifestyle offerings. Semigration (when a buyer sells a property in one province and purchases a new one in a different province) to the Western Cape is sharply on the rise due to Covid-19 which has birthed a new era of remote working – making it easier for professionals to live, work and play in their preferred province – no longer having to wait until they retire to live by the sea. The main findings of an assessment of semigration trends were recently presented by Lightstone Property group to the virtual Real Estate Industry Summit. Movement to Cape Town, Milnerton, and Durbanville, were highlighted as areas that are seeing some of the most semigration.
A substantial increase in homeowners is moving out of Gauteng an increase from 39% in 2019/2020 to 43% in 2021, the second-biggest migration was from Kwa-Zulu Natal, at an average of 14 percent; and third, was the Eastern Cape which has seen an increase from 7% in 2015 to 9% in 2021.

Some reasons for semigration include: People move to cities and towns in municipalities with functional service delivery, better governance, a safer environment and a better quality of life. The trend does not look set to die out any time soon, and will continue to shape the real-estate landscape in the province as more developments and offerings are tailored to the wants and needs of these new residents.

Tyron studied hospitality and food and wine before working as a breakfast chef in a hotel and working his way up to becoming a junior sous chef. Sadly, he was retrenched at the beginning of the pandemic. He then landed a job as a head chef at a wine farm, but still struggled financially. At a point he even considered leaving the industry, but his love for cooking continued to keep him going and instead, Kumin & Khords was born. “‘Kumin’ is my favourite spice, so I decided to go with it as a means of describing the food and hospitality within our business, whereas ‘Khords’ speaks to the entertainment and, more specifically, the music side of our business.” “The reason we started this company was to target staff canteens at factories, which have continued to operate since the first hard-level lockdown – the essential workers,” Tyron reveals. Tyron is joined by Chef Ishmian Samuels, whom he mentored at the start of his career, and his cousin Lindley Hendricks. Lindley doesn’t have any restaurant background and is a cricket player, but he primarily has the role of marketing – although it seems he is multitalented. Despite his background working in restaurants, Tyron says he is most inspired by home cooking. This philosophy is what led to their winning dish in the McCain Dishruption Challenge. As part of their competition entry, Kumin & Khords ran a McCaininspired menu for a week and entered three dishes into the Dishruption Challenge. But it was their sweet and sour McCain stir-fry made with pulled pork and topped with a pickled ginger, apple and fennel salsa that won the day. And how will the prize allow them to achieve their vision? “We are planning to invest 90% of our cash prize into buying equipment, which in return will allow us to push more sales and assist us with doing bigger functions,” Tyron reveals. “This will also help us with providing jobs to other chefs in our community. The other 10% will be used as capital to help start our social impact programme.”

| Two Oceans Aquarium turns 26 Isn’t it hard to believe that the Aquarium has been part of South Africans’ lives for 26 years already - time has flown? Some of you visited the Two Oceans Aquarium as children with your parents, or as part of a school group – and now you are bringing your children to experience and explore the magic of Southern Africa’s underwater world. “When we first opened our doors 26 years ago, we could not have imagined the amazing passion, wonder, empathy, and excitement we’d get to share with you - our team, our fans, and the South African ocean-loving community.” “Thank you to the over 10 million people who have joined our journey, and to the incredible partners that we’ve had along the way that now allow our education and conservation work to reach even more people and help even more wildlife, in the V&A Waterfront and beyond, through the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation,” Two Oceans Aquarium. Two Oceans Aquarium vision of “abundant and healthy oceans”, and mission “to inspire action for the future well-being of our oceans” have always been at the heart of the organisation’s drive to be a force of positive conservation action and environmental education. In 2018, to further grow this vision, the Aquarium established the non-profit Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation to grow education, conservation and research efforts. This work incorporates the already well-established and respected marine science education programmes, the turtle rehabilitation programme, and the Marine Wildlife Management Programme. Two Oceans Aquarium has always chosen to primarily house animals and plants found in the waters off the southern African coast and to celebrate this rich diversity of life, some of which is found nowhere else in the world.

| The largest single phase student development accommodation in South Africa
Cape Town station will soon see a new 23-storey student housing development - the largest single phase student development accommodation in South Africa, developed by Eris Property Group. The development will address the severe shortage of student accommodation and provide 3000+ beds in the heart of the CBD.
The development is not just a secure investment, but will also make a difference in many students’ lives. Interestingly, although the principle of every student accommodation build by Eris is the same - affordable student accommodation, run by an impressive tech-driven property management system, which follows green design principles - the priorities for students differ between cities. Amenities at every Eris student accommodation includes: Study area/ meeting rooms, Computer Labs, Study Tables, Chairs and Whiteboard, Lounge/ TV room, Games Room, Gym, Green Breakaway Areas, TV and Furniture, Braai Areas, Washing Machines, and Tumble Dryers. No matter which city students live in, the student accommodation rates are extremely affordable. Around 75% of the rentals in the Eris student accommodation portfolio are within the specified price range, which is set out by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), with the aim to have all-inclusive rentals that have no additional costs for electricity, water, Wi-Fi and laundry. Fortunately, regardless of the area, students from any tertiary institution in the specific areas can apply to stay at Eris’s student accommodation. There is also the option for universities to take out a head lease and have a certain block or section of the development allocated to students from that specific university.

| Cape Town Motorcycle Club annual rally takes them to Swellendam
The Cape Town Motorcycle Club (CTMCC) was delighted to hear that the national government eased Covid-19 restrictions and place them in a position to host their annual rally – a rally which usually attracts about 120 - 150 participants. This was the 41st consecutive club rally, which has always been held for members, invited guests and families who enjoy the camaraderie of motorcycling without the rowdiness that sometimes accompanies such events. This year, the CTMCC decided once again to assist four charities in Swellendam with good quality, previously loved clothing and other essential items donated by club members and their families. Each charitable cause has some bearing and is close to the hearts of the members of the CTMCC. The Langeberg Hospice Shop, the SPCA, Huis Adaliah and Huis AA Tomlinson were once again the recipients of vast amounts of donated goods. “The reason why Swellendam was chosen for the annual rally once again is the fantastic support provided by members of the local business fraternity and the local municipality.” “Since our first event in 2016 we have been overwhelmed by their support and appreciation of our efforts. Special mention has to be extended to Gerry Fourie of Barrel and Blues, Reinette Aubrey of Langeberg Hospice and Keith Stuurman of the local municipality.”
The seventy-six (76) guest rooms and suites have also been thoughtfully updated, infusing a welcome dash of modernity into the décor and design. The extensive refurbishment also allowed the sea-facing rooms to better capitalise on their remarkable views across the Atlantic Ocean to Robben Island. In step with the extensive revamp of the rooms and public areas, fresh inspiration has been given to the food and drink experience in the capable hands of respected restaurateur Rory Jossel. The foundation of the dining experience will be a contemporary menu built on cooking with charcoal, wood and open flame. Complementing the dining experience will be a new incarnation of the hotel’s famous Harvey’s Bar - what hasn’t changed is the wonderful streetside terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Town’s famous seafront Promenade. After nearly a century of standing watch on the Atlantic Seaboard, a true Cape icon has been beautifully reinvented for a brave new world of global travel.

“Without their assistance and co-operation, this event would not be possible. We certainly had a good time and will be back in Swellendam next year,” says Bobby McGee, Chairman of Cape Town Motorcycle Club. The CTMCC has been existing since 1979 with a membership of 121 riders (2 of whom are still active founder members) and mainly consists of the older, more responsible type of motorcyclist.

The Shoprite Group aims to power 25% of its operations with renewable energy over the next five years and has added 22 new solar PV (photovoltaic) sites between February and September 2021, more than doubling its solar capacity. This is in line with the Group’s strategy to mitigate climate change, in which solar PV rollout and procurement, including a significant number of solar-powered refrigerated trucks and trailers, plays a significant role. The new solar PV installations represent a 138% increase to 29 280MWh per year. This output, generated by solar panels spread across the equivalent of 14 rugby fields, could power 2 674 households for a year, thus easing the pressure on the national grid.

PREMIUM QUALIT Y CBD PRODUCTS
Made with purpose, crafted with care Yenn Health is a local South African company that develops and formulates authentic products for your natural healthcare needs.

How will it help me? – CBD has been shown in many studies to reduce anxiety, aid sleep, reduce inflammation and enhance mood.
Muscle and joint pain is a common problem for many people, especially for the elderly. Almost all creams currently available are formulated with many undesirables such as parabens, petroleum derived synthetics, formaldehydes and PEGs. (Polyethylene glycol). Yenn has developed an effective range of Natural creams without these additives.
What is CBD?- CBD is the abbreviation for Cannabidiol, one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The two main cannabinoids are THC and CBD. THC is the psychoactive compound that creates the ‘high’ sensation, whereas CBD will not. CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and mixed with a carrier oil (usually coconut) to create CBD oil. Terpenes - Terpenes are aromatic compounds that are found in several species of plants and herbs. These are the compounds that give plants their characteristic scents. Essentially, terpenes make pine smell like pine and lavender smell like lavender. The cannabis plant has very high concentrations of over 200 different terpenes. Terpenes bind to our brain’s receptors when we consume them. This produces a physiological response that can influence the production of different neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. In other words, terpenes can have a positive impact on our physical, mental, and emotional health. Entourage effect – The Entourage Effect occurs when all the chemicals in cannabis work synergistically to create enhanced physical effects. Terpenes present in CBD oil help the body in three important ways. They improve our ability to absorb beneficial chemicals through the blood-brain barrier, overcome bacterial defence mechanisms, and increase the absorption and effectiveness of cannabinoids. This means that a CBD product with added terpenes is far more effective than a product that only contains CBD. Is it legal – CBD is legal in South Africa, whereas THC may not be sold. CBD is also not regarded as a prohibited substance for athletes and sports people. Yenn has developed a range of CBD oils with the optimal combination of terpenes for specific ailments. CBD (600mg) CALM drops - CBD oil combined with a world-leading pure terpene combination specifically formulated to reduce anxiety and aid sleep. CBD (600mg) RELIEF drops - CBD oil combined with a patented world-leading pure terpene combination specifically formulated to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
Cayenne Cream with capsicum extract, baobab, frankincense, rosemary, myrrh, ginger, cedarwood and clove. The warming effects of capsicum stimulate the flow of blood to the affected area, resulting in a decrease in inflammation. Ideal for arthritis or for use before exercise. Magnesium Cream - 20% magnesium with sweet almond oil, peppermint and camphor. Ideal for recovery after sport, heavy/restless legs and cramps. CBD (400mg) Cream - CBD combined with baobab, wintergreen, rosemary and clove. Used for arthritis and pain relief. Menthol Cream - 3.5% menthol extracted from the peppermint plant, combined with wintergreen, eucalyptus, camphor, and clove. Cooling sensation for immediate relief from muscle pain.
M agnes ium The health benefits of magnesium include- improved energy levels, improved exercise performance, reduced anxiety/stress, improved quality of sleep, a decrease in inflammation in the body. Magnesium is required in over 300 processes in the body and is often not available in optimal quantities. The most effective way to ensure you have sufficient magnesium is to eat a diet that is high in nuts, seeds, legumes and leafy green vegetables. Unfortunately, this will often not be enough. Magnesium supplementation may be necessary. Magnesium is generally difficult for the body to absorb. The best form of magnesium supplement is an Amino Acid Chelate, which is well absorbed and tolerated by the body. Magnesium is also absorbed transdermally with the use of a cream or a magnesium oil. Yenn has a range of magnesium cream, magnesium oil and capsules.
CBD (600mg) UPLIFT drops - CBD oil combined with a world-leading pure terpene combination specifically formulated to improve mood, assist with depression and stimulate mental focus. CBD (600mg) CLASSIC drops - The original CBD oil to assist with anxiety, aid sleep and reduce inflammation. No terpenes added.

When Mother Nature calls and man has to unfortunately intervene…
Western Cape-based contractor, Khubeka Construction, has developed an innovative, cost-effective and environmentally friendly means of rejuvenating and maintaining wastewater sludge ponds, waterways, and dams that have become overloaded and lifeless due to pollution. At some point in its life, every wastewater treatment pond will need the introduction of positive aeration to stimulate the natural eco-system within. Sometimes, though, the build-up is too extensive, and the intervention too late to carry out a routine replenishment process. That’s when a more intensive and natural approach is required, but as Mark Rennie from Khubeka Construction explains, “Conventional techniques using high-powered pumps can be prohibitively expensive.” In response, Khubeka have developed a low-cost solution that is achieving sustainable results, underscored by a recent pilot project at George’s Gwaing waste water treatment works (WWTW). “Where we’ve been called in to assist on treatment works remediation projects in the past, what we’ve frequently encountered is a situation where municipal maturation/oxidation ponds are typically ‘sludged-up’, often as a result of many years of use.”
“This can be compounded by power failures that cause uncontrolled raw effluent discharge into these ponds. The result is that these should be eco-friendly systems become completely overloaded, and eventually, septic,” Rennie explains. “This scenario commonly occurs in rural and small towns. However, there are cases where large cities have a similar problem. Either way, the sludge needs to be removed.” There are two methods that can be applied: either mechanically pumping the sludge out of the pond; or going the biological intervention route to break down the bio-solids.

| Aerobic alternative: pros and cons
As opposed to mechanical extraction, a pure biological intervention – by pumping in a range of aerobic bacteria – would seem the most viable alternative, and it can be, given certain conditions. However, Khubeka has encountered a number of problems with this method. “The initial cost is cheap. However, to maintain the system using bacteria becomes expensive over time. Plus, large pumps are needed to effectively mix the bacteria into the sludge, and to ‘turn’ the pond over. What also happens in this case is that the sludge becomes suspended, and then usually spills into the final discharge area, namely the river or wetland, with negative downstream results.”
| A system that works - Bio-Aire
BEFORE
The only part that requires any maintenance is the 3-phase blower, which is landbased. The system employs fine bubble aeration to move the water using an air lift principle, which attains the massive volumes required. Remarkably, the Bio- Aire units are capable of moving approximately 15 million litres of water within a 24-hour period. The water is aerated as it passes through the unit and in the process increases the dissolved oxygen in the pond. The growth of native bacteria in the pond then begins feeding on the sludge and reduces it, similar to the natural dams and waterways. During the pilot project at Gwaing WWTW, the sludge volume was reduced by at least 60% in just two months on one of the plant’s four ponds. The pond in question, which is now fully reinstated, measures 250 m in length and is 40 m wide with a depth of 1 to 1.5 m. Having ‘brought this pond back to life’ there is now evidence of emerging aquatic life, like tadpoles, plus a resurgence in bird activity. The dead zone has come back to the top of the pond, plus the smell is now virtually odourless. “We are currently in discussions with other Western Cape municipalities where we’re experiencing strong interest,” adds Rennie. “We are also planning to return to Gwaing when their new financial year commences to de-sludge their three remaining ponds.” If we can achieve these results within raw sewerage ponds, just imagine what BioAire can do for our natural rivers and dams that are continuously being polluted by man.
Practical experience, combined with these observations, motivated Khubeka to develop its unique product, which is aimed at any industry that discharges organic wastewater for treatment or polishing. Khubeka has designed a 3 kW and 6 kw unit depending on the application – which are inexpensive to operate compared to conventional aerators and mixers, plus the system is mobile. The square-shaped aeration unit that sits in the water is made up of internal chambers and has no moving parts.

Benguela Cove
Scoops Three Double Veritas Golds for Wine All wineries seek a coveted gold medal. Many spend years buying in the best fruit and blending countless wines in pursuit of a win. This makes the achievement of Johann Fourie, Benguela Cove’s cellar master and his team even more significant, winning three double gold medals in the Veritas wine awards in only the winery’s fifth year. Wines and brandies were tasted blind by the Veritas panel of experts and the results announced in November. Scores are awarded according to the international 100-point scale: a double gold medal is achieved when the panel agrees a score of 93 or more out of 100 for an entry; gold when a wine notches-up 90 to 92.9 points. The winery was completed in 2017, and it is almost unprecedented for such a young team to achieve double gold, along with two gold medals to add to the treasure chest. So, what is it that makes Benguela Cove so successful? Johann Fourie explains: “The terroirs of Benguela Cove were at best considered marginal when grapes were first planted in 2007. But in many ways, this is no bad thing; Wines from marginal sites across the globe, like Benguela Cove, have in common a distinct and authentic character with a strong sense of place. These sites produce naturallystressed vines, which in return means better quality.” The site has turned out to be exceptional, says Fourie, with each of the various slopes and soil types producing wines that are “ocean-fresh, elegant and uniquely different and therefore site specific - as a vineyard that’s the lowest-lying, with the longest seaboard of any vineyard in the world. He credits Benguela Cove’s entrepreneurial owner Penny Streeter OBE and her family with giving him free rein to create wines of distinction; this has allowed him, the fruit and the estate to stand out from the crowd, Fourie says; every single bottle produced at Benguela Cove is made using grapes, produced and bottled on the estate.
Platter's announces
Five-Star Wines for 2022 Edition
So, which wines were the stars of the Veritas awards? Penny Streeter says that if you want to give a gift this Christmas or simply ensure that you have the best wines on your table, the choice must be double gold winners Benguela Cove Vinography Sauvignon Blanc 2020, Benguela Cove Estate Sauvig-non Blanc 2020 and for those that enjoy a sparkling wine, Benguela Cove Joie De Vivre Cap Classique Brut 2017. Gold medals went to wines in the Benguela Cove Lighthouse Collection – Moody Lagoon Red Blend 2019 and Benguela Cove Estate Wine Malbec 2019. Penny Streeter, says: “It has been great to emerge from the pandemic and see so many awards coming to Benguela Cove; it results from so much hard work by our team.” “This year the Benguela Cove estate was awarded WWF Champion Status for environmental practices, and the awards from Veritas, Michelangelo and Tim Atkin MW add a further stamp of approval for our winery; together with the property and sustainability awards it feels like Benguela Cove is the place to be!” For more information visit www.benguelacove.co.za
Plums and Roodeberg Classic
Red Blend are a summer sensation Summer is the season for juicy, ripe plums – a good time to get creative in the kitchen in concert with Roodeberg’s Classic Red Blend.
Platter’s by Diners Club Wine Guide has revealed the eagerly awaited and prestigious list of wines earning the maximum rating of five stars in the new 2022 edition. The unveiling coincides with the launch of the guide on Platter’s digital platforms - the apps for iOS/Apple and Android, and the website. Wines receiving the sought-after five-star rating in Platter’s must undergo a rigorous process of sighted and blind assessment (i.e. with and without sight of the label) by a team of experienced experts. Bottlings that are judged to be “Superlative, a South African classic” are given the highest ranking of five stars, equal to 95 points or better on the 100-point rating scale. The 234 wines that achieve this distinction in the 2022 edition cover the full spectrum of winemaking styles and approaches across 28 different categories. Red and White Blends are the biggest classes, as in previous editions, with 46 and 27 individual labels respectively. Chenin Blanc, which has made remarkable strides in terms of quality lately, is the next-biggest category, with 27 exceptional wines. Chardonnay performs particularly well this year, with 19 bottlings originating in a diverse range of sites. Another strong performer is Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15 wines, the overwhelming majority of which come from the Stellenbosch area. Reflected in the five-star line-up are many of the key trends shaping South African wine today, such as the revival and reinterpretation of traditional varieties such as Cinsault and Colombard; red wines with lighter textures and lower alcohol; and the use of clay and concrete vessels as alternatives to oak for fermentation and/or ageing. “Another relatively recent development, which partly accounts for the rising number of five-star wines, is ‘deconstruction’, where different clones of the same grape variety are bottled separately,” says Philip van Zyl, acting managing director and editor of Platter’s. “Sometimes not just different clones, but also different sites within an estate are produced and released separately, to showcase the terroir. The Pinot Noir category is an example of this phenomenon, with a single producer releasing four wines from four clones and four sites, each with its personality and nuance, and each worthy of a five-star rating.”
A Veritas gold medallist, the 2020 vintage of this multi-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon-driven blend is a symphony of textures and tastes that meld beautifully with luscious stewed or baked plums. Aromatic layers of fresh fruit with hints of spice and dark chocolate lead your senses to a mouthful of plums and cedar oak wrapped in silky tannins that linger long after the last sip. Besides being a sumptuous taste partner with Roodeberg, plums pack a nutritious punch. Rich in antioxidants, potassium and fibre, they are naturally sweet yet low in calories with a low glycaemic index (GI).
Roodeberg inspires a lifetime of stories in every bottle. HIDDEN SECRETS TO CONSIDER WHEN
Purchasing Leather Shoes
- Does the shoe you intend purchasing have a veg leather tanned insole? - If not, then 80% of the foot sweat need to find some other place to release its sweat. - The question may be raised as to what makes the Bummel Leather shoe so special? We find the answer in their design and manufacturing process. Bummel meticulously fit their shoes with a veg tan leather insole to contain the foot sweat. The next step in creating only the best in Leather shoes is that Bummel only uses the finest upper leather, which moulds itself according to the shape of the foot within the shoe. Between the foot and the upper leather, Bummel then adds a leather lining to cover the stiffener in the heal as well as at the toe of the shoe which gives support to the shoe and thereby prevent the foot of sticking to a synthetic material. This is the reason why Bummel Leather Shoes is the better, if not the best in its field. Bummel manufactures leather shoes made of leather upper, leather lining, and veg leather tanned insole where no synthetic touches the foot. Bummel is the shoe that speaks to the foot, it is a breathable shoe, and allows the foot to happily feel the difference – what a joy for the foot to live in such comfort. It is all leather – Handmade by highly skilled, and well-trained artisans. If you are unable to visit the Bummel Shoe store in George, you can view Michael’s accomplishments on the Bummel website. Fun Summer Activities for Montessori Children At last, summer is here! The outside world is in full bloom and the days are longer and warmer, which sets the tone for natural exploration. Here are some fun Montessori-style summer activities to keep your little ones busy, engaged and learning. Dr. Maria Montessori believed that the outdoor environment was an extension of the indoor classroom because nature provides endless opportunities for experiential learning. Spending time in nature promotes physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development in every child. Watch the clouds go by - Lay on the grass and look up at the sky to study the clouds. Identify shapes and designs, and don’t forget to integrate a little bit of science with naming the different types of clouds. You can even print out the different types of clouds on cards and use them to help identify each one. Gather and collect - Visit the beach, forest, park or any outdoor area to collect shells, rocks, acorns, twigs, and other natural items that you stumble upon. Sort them, identify them, draw them, count them or paint on them – there are endless possibilities! Marvellous pond life - Explore the ecosystem of a pond by observing the life cycles of little creatures such as dragonflies, snails, beetles and frogs. Remember to always follow your child’s lead and enjoy the fun in the sun.
Oh, and don’t forget the sunscreen! Enrolments are now open for LittleHill Montessori The Huntsman & LittleHill Fynbos. “Our schools welcome learners who are both residents & non-residents of the estate.” For more information visit www.littlehill.co.za

when they use Rainbow Sidewalk Chalk Rainbow Sidewalk Chalk is an eco-friendly business in Cape Town, manufacturing non-toxic chalk. The company owned by Liesel Gaffley aims to help children refine their fine motor skills and inspire and educate them. Liesel started the business from home in January 2021 to support her family.
“I have 2 boys on the autism spectrum and for them holding a crayon or pen is quite difficult as they have low muscle tone. My youngest son Adam loves chalk, and the chalk I bought at the store kept on breaking and I had to buy it regularly. I tried making lego chalk to help with this, and it snowballed from there. I love making chalk and I love seeing the kid’s faces when they use the chalk. Furthermore, I am so grateful to have a small business and hopefully, one day to grow so that I can employ more ladies that can then help support their families. I felt that there were also not many chalk colors and designs available in South Africa. Our chalk is perfect for fine motor skills and with much-needed time for the kids to be outdoors and be creative.” Rainbow Sidewalk Chalk make their chalk in small, unique batches in fun and colorful designs - perfectly designed to fit in small hands. Rainbow Sidewalk Chalk offers Dinosaurs, Chalksicles, Macaroons, Gemstone, Personalized Name Sets, Alphabet A-Z, Numbers, Lego, Unicorn horns, various Christmas sets and many more to choose from. School in a Box broadens reach and
impact in SA and beyond While the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on many small businesses, non-profit organizations and social enterprises, there are some business models that were able to take strategic advantage of the opportunities that lockdown and the rapid migration to online solutions have provided. Interestingly, many social enterprises and not-for-profit companies were well poised to scale their offering to meet the increased market demand. One inspiring example of this is Cape Town-based education technology pioneers, School in a Box (SIB). From January – September 2021, the organization increased its sales income by 473% and branched out into two new African countries. School in a Box now provides tablet-based educational solutions at 245 sites across three countries in the SADC region, offering over 22,000 resources to users across the educational landscape. With the ongoing challenges in the education sector, the SIB model for virtual learning is well-placed to give learners an early start to vital online educational support. The game changer that School in a Box brings is that learners and teachers can access all this interactive content on their tablets even when offline, through a bespoke tech solution that SIB has developed over the past five years. This includes a UPS system that allows for uninterrupted learning even where electricity is inconsistent. The current focus is on moving towards a full school offering, incorporating CAPS-aligned content from Grade R to Grade 12 and including teacher lessons and resources as part of the package. Given the challenges and lack of resources that so many young South Africans face in accessing decent education, it is heartening to see organizations like School in a Box creating lasting and sustainable impact across an ever-increasing number of communities.

Executive Chef Jason Lashmar of La Paris Bistro
keeps guests coming back for more “I like to cook food that I like to eat and as my only way to travel right now is through food, I want people to feel this by cooking as authentically as possible.” Jason believes in cooking from the heart, his amazing team embraces this philosophy and, it shows. He has a deep appreciation for this family as well as his own. After completing his studies at The Culinary Academy the real journey began, he enjoyed the fun side but soon realised that it would take long hours and hard work (physically and mentally). He loved it – the pressure, the heat, the chaos and finally the end product on a clean, white and shiny plate. After studying and working locally, the US beckoned, he worked up and down the East Coast for almost 5 years, where two Chefs stood out along his journey. Chef Obed Gonzales who pushed and encouraged him and Chef Jason Borajkiewicz who taught him to respect the humble carrot as much as a prime cut of beef. Once back home in SA, he joined La Paris Bistro as Sous Chef. From then, he has grown into the Chef he is today and continues to draw inspiration from every Chef that he has had the privilege to work alongside. Still passionate and fascinated by all things food, one of his favourite sayings is “If it doesn’t burn a little, then what’s the point of fire?” For more information contact 021 867 0171 or visit www.laparis.co.za
Opening of
Woolworths launches
new beach club in Cape Town
a Chuckles ice cream range
Cape Town will welcome a new addition to its bustling restaurant and bar scene with the opening of Cabo Beach Club - a European-style beach club with two restaurants and multiple areas on offer to guests. The genius behind the new concept is well-known local chef Ryan Cole. The launch of Cabo Beach Club marks the second solo project for the talented chef. Located in the pristine, illustrious docks of the V&A Waterfront, the new spot will be opening its doors just in time for the festive summer season. The new spot will be home to an in-house restaurant, Violet, with its menu themed to reflect an up-market feel and approach, offering a menu tailored around sharing small plates. In addition, Cabo Beach Club will also offer a general menu themed to more relaxed dishes such as pizza, salads, burgers and seafood. With an additional “Caviar on the Deck” menu featuring oysters, sushi, caviar and MCC, guests can aptly celebrate the start of summer at Cabo Beach Club. The venue will also be home to a pool where guests can kick back and relax with a refreshing cocktail in hand. Cabo Beach aims to offer a truly chic beach-style venue setting, from the décor to the food. Chef Ryan shares that this is not the last of the projects he hopes to implement in the industry.
Are you a Chuckles fan? Have you tried the Chuckles-inspired ice cream? Woolworths has officially launched an ice cream range dedicated to the much-loved sweet treat. Launched on 8 November, the Chuckles Malt Ice Cream range includes a 2-litre Malt Dairy Ice Cream tub and a box of 6 Mini Malt Crunch solos. Commenting on the latest additions to the line, product developer for Woolworths Frozen Foods Department Carol Weideman said: “We are extremely excited about this launch, as we have been working and wanting to introduce specifically the Ice cream for a while now.” Referring to the Chuckles Mini Malt Crunch Solos, she added they are made of malt flavoured dairy ice cream, enrobed in a milk chocolate coating with crisp malt meringue pieces. “Overall, the flavour and texture delivery should remind your senses of eating our ionic malt Chuckles,” Weideman concluded. The tubs are made with ice cream using cow’s milk, butter and malt extract, embedded with uncoated malted puff pieces and chocolate chips. Best served as is or topped with even more chuckles, chocolate sauce and yummy peanut brittle. Pure decadence! As it comes as no surprise, the range has been well-received already by Woolies shoppers across the country.
La Colombe Group
to open 2 new restaurants at V & A Waterfront The La Colombe Group, which currently has five restaurants in its fold, will add two new ones in December when it opens PIER Restaurant and The Waterside Restaurant at the V&A Waterfront. The new eateries will be located in the Pierhead Building, in between the NSRI building and Life Grand Café. PIER Restaurant will bring an intimate, multi-course fine-dining experience that will be led by chef John Norris-Rogers, previously of La Petite Colombe in Franschhoek, while Roxy Mudie will be at the helm of The Waterside Restaurant. Previously, Roxy was sous chef at both La Colombe and Protégé. Roxy has worked with Scot Kirton at La Colombe for seven years. She is a bubble of talent waiting to explode in this exciting new space. Guests dining at PIER can expect local produce to be the focus, with a special emphasis on inspiration from the ocean – and the tableside theatrics guests have come to expect from the team. Dishes that diners can look forward to including confit mussels slowly cooked in chorizo oil or oysters poached tableside by the chefs.

The Waterside Restaurant will serve a sophisticated but more casual menu that guests can enjoy both indoors and on the outdoor deck – perfect for sumptuous summer lunches. Two different menus will be available upon its launch – a fourcourse menu with a selection of choices or a more formal eight-course tasting menu.

Unpacking what it means to unlock opportunity in a new world, Stander commented: “Tourism recovery needs to be front and centre of the City, Province, and National dialogue and remains a critical pillar for the Western Cape Economy. I am truly proud to be part of the leadership team leading the Western Cape to being one of the world’s leading regional economies,” She went on to add her vision for Cape Town and the Western Cape to become: The Rotterdam of trade Photo L - R: logistics into Africa, The Bangalore Thuli Madonsela and Wrenelle Stander of business process outsourcing efficiency, The Silicon Valley of tech start-ups, The London of financial services, The Western Australia of Solar Energy, The Spain of Citrus Exports and The Boston of Health Tech. Echoing the collective sentiment for economic growth and job creation to sit at the core of rebuilding the local economy, Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, David Maynier, said: “We will be doubling down and doing everything we can to drive economic growth and job creation in the Western Cape.”
As an heirloom, it can be a priceless family gem. To the collector, it is an investment – later to be sold at a profit. “Although books have in modern times become mere dispensable consumer goods because of the electronic frenzy gripping the Global Village, there was a time long before the conception of the smartphone and the internet - when kings had books made to contain their edicts, laws, memoirs, and religion.” “The most famous Book in the Western World was that of Moses: Two tablets on which the Twelve Commandments were engraved. Books Photo Credit: Marthinus van Bart are still with us, and will always be so as long as mankind loves to read and treasure tangible books as collector’s pieces,” says Johan Botha, business owner of Johlinic.Johan is one of only a few trained and experienced technicians in the art of book conservation in South Africa - a living legend of this trade. He has for many decades been saving and restoring valuable books. Johan started his career at Naspers’ Nasionale Boekdrukkery in Cape Town, in a workshop with machinery specially created for his job. Later he became a restorer and binder at the J.S. Gericke Library of the Stellenbosch University, before he went into semi-retirement. Today he is a specialist restorer and binder, and it has become a hobby. "Experience the Magic" At West Coast Shores “A truly wonderful space to unwind – not too far from the city, but somehow in a different world”; “awesome décor, awesome area” – guest comments describe this stunning guesthouse in Jacobsbaai – an easy 90 mins drive from Cape Town. West Coast Shores is your magic place, whether staying a night or a week. Situated on a friendly little road just steps away from the beach, there’s something here for everyone from relaxing in the sun, working online with complimentary Wi-Fi, doing the ‘bay walk, or even action kayaking. Kiddies love the village’s Fairy Garden and everyone tries the awesome Jacobsbaai ice-creams. Enjoy wine and artisanal cheeses discovered on a day trip recommended by your hosts, and watch stunning sunsets with flocks of seabirds doing aerobatics over the water. Foodie Trail dining options proliferate at local or nearby restaurants and finally, enjoy a great night’s sleep between white percale lulled by owls and waves. If you’re planning ahead for Valentine’s romance, book the Fynbos Suite and ask about special date-night packages; and we recommend the Driftwood Suite for an ideal family stay, with its separate twin-bed annex and full bathroom. Solo and business travellers also enjoy the comfort and peace at West Coast Shores. Whatever your accommodation needs – West Coast Shores offers that perfect solution. Explore the unique Cape West Coast The Cape West Coast in South Africa is unspoiled and authentic, known for its hospitable people, unpretentious way of life, fascinating cultural heritage sites and myriad activities from adventure sports to bird watching. There is a plethora of activities, attractions, and experiences that will invite you back, time and again. See and experience something with a different twist on each adventure on the Foodie and Berg Route. Foodie Route – The West Coast Way Foodie Route includes some of the most beautiful and interesting outlying towns and locations on the Cape West Coast such as Langebaan, Saldanha Bay, Jacobsbaai, Paternoster, Cape Columbine, St Helena Bay, Shelley Point, Velddrif, and Hopefield. Attractions - The Foodie Route showcases attractions including the West Coast National Park, West Coast Fossil Park, Saldanha Bay Cultural Village and Museum, and the Simply Bee Observation Centre in Hopefield. Berg Route - Bokkomlaan is named after the salted silvery fish that are strung into bunches and hung to dry. Bokkoms are the West Coast’s answer to biltong and the taste of these whole dried harders has become synonymous with the region and part of the West Coast Way self-drive Berg Route. Time stands still on a walk along Bokkomlaan, once the heart of Velddrif’s bustling fishing industry. The Great Berg River limits future growth in the Velddrif area, ensuring that it remains restful and exclusive. Bokkomlaan is a great place to chill and watch the tide come in while sipping freshly roasted coffee. Try a bokkom platter at Ek En Djy Vissery and buy some bokkoms. Sit on a jetty with a cocktail as seagulls bob between children splashing and playing. The birdlife is among the best on the coastline - from flamingos and spoonbills to pelicans and pied kingfishers, you might be lucky to spy a black swan.
Things to do - Lagoon and river cruises, sandboarding, quad-biking, kite and windsurfing, mountain biking, kayaking, horse riding, beach hopping, and many more. Where to stay - You can choose from a variety of accommodation options from West Coast Shores Guesthouse located in Jacobsbaai to serve as your base when exploring the West Coast.
Capenature Features one of SA’s Favourite Playgrounds Earlier in October, Plett Tourism assisted CapeNature with an invitation to feature local hiking enthusiasts in an upcoming marketing campaign focused on CapeNature’s different Garden Route locations, including the iconic Robberg and Keurbooms Nature Reserves. These sun-kissed days in nature highlight some reasons why Plettenberg Bay is an ideal destination for outdoor-loving families.
Exploring Robberg Nature Reserve and cruising the Keurbooms River alongside the Keurbooms Nature Reserve are frequent activities for families and youngsters in the area. “As the doors of tourism slowly re-open, we have noticed an increased demand for outdoor activities and families requesting very specific information relating to hiking, water activities and our beaches. Plett is one of SA’s favourite playgrounds with year-round moderate temperatures and ample opportunity to get outside,” says Patty Butterworth, CEO, Plett Tourism. Robberg Nature Reserve is one of the most important and iconic experiences in Plettenberg Bay. Some highlight features of a visit here include spotting the rare blue duiker, the Western Cape’s smallest antelope; walking alongside one of the seven climbing-falling dunes on the Cape coastline; and viewing the highest navigational light on the South African coastline, at the Cape Seal Lighthouse. The reserve also extends 1.8 km offshore, providing protection to a range of vulnerable fish species. Visitors can expect inspiring landscapes, exciting dolphin and whale sightings in season, and to be accompanied on their walks or hikes by a variety of bird species and the occasional seal. An overnight hut is available for those who want to spend more time on this beautiful reserve. Keurbooms River Nature Reserve conserves a variety of habitats including indigenous forest, riverine gorge, coastal fynbos and estuarine littoral dune fields. This is a sanctuary for forest and river birds, and visitors can expect to see a diversity of species, including the Knysna woodpecker, fish eagle, little grebe, black-headed oriole and narina trogon.

Cape Town welcomes news of Africa’s second Cricket World Cup
City revs up its support for Motorsport events
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced recently that South Africa will host the Men’s World Cup 2027, together with Namibia and Zimbabwe. South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya co-hosted the Cricket World Cup in 2003, the first to be hosted in Africa. It will be the first time that the SADC region hosts a global cricket tournament and incidentally, this will be the first-time such games will be staged in Namibia.
On Saturday, 20 November 2021, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis joined hundreds of people who gathered at the Killarney Motor Racing Complex for the annual Bragging Rights event supported by the City of Cape Town. Featuring some of the country’s top drag racers, spinners, drifters, and motorcyclists, Bragging Rights is the biggest event to take place at Killarney since the outbreak of Covid-19. The three-in-one blockbuster event was an entertaining affair for petrolheads who love big engines and tyre smoke. It was a battle to determine who will be crowned the best in the country in the different categories including drifting and competitive spinning among others. The event also forms part of the City’s partnership with Killarney to cater for the spinning and drifting needs of Cape Town’s car enthusiasts. Bragging Rights is one of several events the City is sponsoring through its event support process over the coming months. Before the pandemic, annually racing at Killarney contributed R357 million to Cape Town’s economy. Having taken a knock because of Covid-19, an increase in the number of events hosted at the venue could assist in the facilities economic recovery. Recently, the City’s Special Events Committee approved financial support for the popular Robot Racing, taking place at Killarney every week, until the end of June. The Cape Motorsport Festival presented by G+A Motorsport – featuring 50 local and international teams and supported by the City of Cape Town will take place on Friday, 10 and Saturday, 11 December. The headline event is the Cape 9 Hour, the final round of the 2021 South African Endurance Series. The two-day Motorsport Festival will also feature invitation races for four categories of cars built before 1986. Additionally, the City is backing Streetmania – an event geared towards local street races, drifters, and spinners – to take place early next year.
During the 2003 tournament, Newlands Cricket Ground – one of the oldest grounds in the sport - was the playground for five matches, including one in the Super Six stage. Cape Town is already gearing up to host the Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2022 as well as the 2023 Netball World Cup, among some exciting major international events lined up for the Mother City.
Trans Agulhas Inflatable Boat Challenge Plettenberg Bay will play host to the first leg of the Trans Agulhas Inflatable Boat Challenge 2021 at the end of December. Celebrating its 33rd anniversary, the fast-paced, action-packed water sport kicks off at Hobie Beach on 28 December and will see over 30 inflatable boats compete for top honours. Competitors will visit beaches along the coast between Nature’s Valley and Gordon’s Bay, where the race will finish on 31 December. The first day is from Hobie Beach to Mosselbay. The second leg is a gruelling one from Mosselbay to Struisbaai and includes a night race.
Hungry for action at Lomond Triathlon The 5th annual Lomond Triathlon to take place on 11 December 2021 at the Lomond Wine Estate in Gansbaai promises to be the best one yet with many triathletes and outdoor enthusiasts hungry for action. The triathlon season is shorter, but be sure to end the year in spectacular fashion by swimming in the beautiful Lomond dam, riding between the fynbos of the Walker Bay Conservancy and running around the vineyards of the Lomond Wine Estate. The event will have 2 distances, a long, and short course, and athletes can choose to do it all or as part of a team of 2 or 3. The Kids Event in association with Orca will also be a highlight for all the youngsters. The Lomond Triathlon is truly an event for the whole family. Live entertainment and various food stalls will round off the day, along with all the famous Lomond wines.
WEB RAGE
Day three sees the competitors racing from Struisbaai to Gansbaai. The last leg is from Gansbaai to Gordon’s Bay Harbour. Plettenberg Bay looks forward to hosting the racers and the supporters it attracts. “It is great to have opportunities that encourage our communities to visit the area, and this event is one that attracts many.” The fast-paced, high adrenaline sport is a must to watch and spectators can expect some brave wave jumping as competitors go full throttle to be the best in the toughest inflatable boat race in the world. M AKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF 34 BRAVE CHILDREN
IM’POSSIBLE DREAM TOUR, JOURNEY OF HOPE The Cross Cape Im’possible Dream Tour is the brainchild of the Im’possible Tour founder, Grant Lottering. Lottering founded the first of his annual Im’Possible Tours in 2013 after suffering a near-fatal accident during a world championship preparation race in Trento, Italy. Every year since, Lottering has pushed his physical and mental boundaries, cycling his now-famous solo Im’possible Tours in aid of charity. But this tour will be different. From 15 - 17 January 2022, Lottering and one of the country’s best chefs, David Higgs will tackle the epic 742 km Cross Cape Cycle Route across the Western Cape. Starting in Plettenberg Bay, this route will take the pair through the coastal Garden Route to the arid Klein Karoo, through the Overberg and finishing in the Cape Winelands in Stellenbosch. The ride includes over 10 200 m climbing of energy taxing passes, both off-road and on. The aim is to ride the route, which typically takes seven to 20 days to complete, continuously, in the fastest time possible within the three days. And as if 742 km is not hard enough, the duo has included the challenging
Karoo Crossing in their attempt, which will add a 358 km and 7 320 m of climbing between Knysna and Calitzdorp, crossing the infamous Swartberg Pass. “This Cross Cape Im’possible Dream Tour, or #DGdreamtour, has all the makings to be an incredible yet very challenging fundraiser. Next year, our foundation has been in existence for 34 years, and with our theme for 2022 - Journey of Hope - we cannot wait to join hands with Grant and David to make a difference in the lives of 34 brave children,” comments Julia Sotirianakos, CEO of Reach for a Dream. Reach For a Dream has been one of the country’s most recognisable and credible charities for the last 33 years. “We encourage children to use the power of their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses and make these dreams come true.” Through Dream in a box fulfilment, Virtual Reality and Dream Room projects, the Foundation is positively impacting the lives of thousands of vulnerable children daily, countrywide. To reach the 34 dream benchmark, corporate South Africa and the public can get involved and donate via www.reachforadream.org.za

CRADLE OF TRACK CYCLING IN SOUTH-AFRICA
PAARL BOXING DAY TRACK CHALLENGE The 2021 Paarl Boxing Day Track Challenge has opened ticket sales to this year event, which takes place on 26 December. Sales are limited to 2000 in-stadium spectators as per the government regulated outdoor gathering limit. The 123rd staging of the historic Paarl Boxing Day Track Challenge will take place at the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl and will see South Africa’s top professionals as well as a host of international rider’s tackle each in front of the passionate Faure Street Stadium crowd. “We have already received enquiries from European-based professionals to take part, including Belgian Jonas Rickaert who has become a real crowd favourite over the past two editions. And then, of course, we can’t wait to host current Cycle Tour champion, Nolan Hoffman, in the meeting again! We have confirmed participation of riders from numerous African countries as well as our top professionals. This is a unique opportunity for our country’s top track riders to get the recognition they deserve,” says meeting organiser Wynand de Villiers. Paarl Boxing Day is well known worldwide in the sport. It is the oldest event in all forms of cycling in the world. The meeting started in 1897. The saying goes in Paarl that you might be the best in the world in a certain track cycling event, but it doesn’t mean much if you’re second best in Paarl! Paarl is the cradle of track cycling in South-Africa. “Boxing Day is not only the biggest track cycling event in Africa, it’s also one of the most spectator sporting events on the continent,” says De Villiers. The meeting concludes with the famous 25 Mile Race, and the winner of the final event is regarded as the winner of the day. In addition to a prize purse, the Minnaar Cup floating trophy, which dates to 1908, is also up for grabs.
