DESTINATIONS AROUND THE WORLD - WHERE DO WE RANK?

Photo: Hermanus - Photo Credit: Grant Durr

Tourism Sentiment Index (TSI) - a travel data intelligence solution created by acclaimed destination marketing agency Destination Think - has released Leading Places: The 100 Most Loved Destinations Around the World for 2021, with Knysna ranking in the top 20 at #19, Stellenbosch #23, Hermanus #41, and Cape Town #54. TSI concluded the rankings through an intensive data study - analysing more than 1.6 billion online conversations and content pieces publicly available about 21,330 global destinations - to identify the 100 ‘Most Loved Destinations’.

With the rankings confirming the destination’s popularity globally, Cape Town and the Western Cape was also very popular locally this past festive season, with domestic visitor numbers tripling between November and December 2021. Cape Town International Airport reported a recovery of 66% for domestic arrivals and 29% for international when compared to December 2019. We trust that February will bring a surge of guests to the Western Cape to experience the best our beautiful province has to offer, as many entities remain in dire straits and desperately need visitors to boost their businesses.

| South African-born Shau Mafuna joins Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team

The Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team expanded their staff complement with the appointment of several new members ahead of the new F1 season. One of the new employees is South African-born Shau Mafuna, who joined the team in November 2021 as a mechanical engineer. Mafuna joined the F1 team’s powertrain division - the team that supplies engines to the four teams that Mercedes-AMG powers. These teams are Mercedes-AMG, Aston Martin, McLaren, and Williams. Mafuna will be directly involved with the powertrains fitted to Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car this year. Dreams certainly do come true.

That’s the case for the South African-born mechanical engineer Shau Mafuna. Quitting has never been an option for South African mechanical engineers based in the UK. Mafuna said: “This is a dream that a certain few knows how hard we have pushed to reach this position! The last 12 months on the Work Experience Academy have been challenging but insightful and have prepared me to take up the permanent role with a lot more confidence.” “Look, it goes back where the dream started, to be an F1 driver, everyone wants to be an F1 driver for the best team in the world, Mercedes is one. Now as an engineer, you will also be part of the best in the world,” says Mafuna. He had to overcome a number of obstacles to achieve his dream. “One thing for me is South Africans are much better than they think. They are at the level we are taught is much higher – don’t doubt your skills. Trust your skills.” He’s looking forward to his dream and hopes to inspire others to follow in his footsteps. “I’m wishing all the best for those engineers, aspiring to be like me and hopefully get more South Africans on this platform, and I really believe we can do it.”

| Brace yourself Western Cape more hot weather is on the way

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has recently indicated that the extreme heat and humidity is here to stay a little longer. After the extreme heat and humidity experienced in the Western Cape this summer, SAWS said people should be prepared for hotter days in February, the hottest month on average for South Africa. There is a possibility that the Western Cape can experience hotter days, even though the seasonal outlook is indicating normal to below-normal maximum temperatures for most of the country. “South Africa is warming up, but there can be cooler years in the future,” stated the weather office. UCT Climate System Analysis Group (CSAG) deputy director Christopher Jack said these conditions would continue for the next several decades and even longer if global efforts to reduce emissions failed, proving that these conditions were indeed a symptom of climate change. The CSAG deputy director said insight into the recent humidity was more complex and required further analysis of the system that produced the heat wave.

Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said the recent floods in some provinces and the heatwave in the Western Cape was proof that climate change was not some distant phenomenon. But was happening right now.

How to beat the heat: Stay hydrated at all times, avoid too much physical activity, keep cool, check up on those that are suffering the most, protect your skin by using sunscreen, do not leave children and pets in an unattended vehicle, and wear garments that are light.

| Cape’s Cruise Tourism Season Resumes Cape Town and the Western Cape’s Cruise Tourism Season Resumed with the arrival of the MSC Orchestra Cruise Liner. The Cruise Cape Town Initiative – a strategic project housed within Wesgro - welcomed the resumption of Cruise Tourism with the arrival of the MSC Orchestra on local shores on 12 January 2022. Having made her way from Durban to Port Elizabeth, and then to Cape Town’s recently revamped terminal. The Mother City and surrounding regions benefited from the disembarking passengers. The ship then embarked passengers and departed for a 5-night cruise and returned to Cape Town on 18 January 2022. Globally, the demand for cruising reflected a 20.5% growth in the last five years, with the Cape Town Cruise Terminal performing exceptionally well with 206 Cruise ships recorded over the last 5 cruise seasons (2015-2019). Vessels which docked at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal during the November 2018 - April 2019 cruise season collectively contributed over R2 million in spend from ship crew members. The highest spend was linked to hotels, handling processing, transport and meals for crew members. “Through attracting more cruise ships to the Mother City, other passenger ports in South Africa and on the Continent stand to capitalise on cruise tourism. ”

“Despite getting off to a slow start because of COVID regulations and Omicron, the Cruise Cape Town Initiative remains dedicated to promoting and enabling this highly profitable tourism sector in the upcoming months – to benefit our province, the rest of the country and the African continent,” concluded Wrenelle Stander, Wesgro CEO and official spokesperson for the Cruise Cape Town Initiative.

| CPUT Celebrates Space

Using The Pink Rescue Buoy

Launch Of Nanosatellites

On Wednesday, 5 January 2022 two young men were swept out of the main beach tidal pool in front of the Jongensfontein camping area by a rip current. They were pulled into an extremely dangerous situation where they could not swim back into the tidal pool and risked being washed against the rocks. It was clear that they were rapidly tiring.

The Transporter-3 mission from expat Elon Musk’s SpaceX lifted off on 13 January 2022 with three nanosatellites locally produced by Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s (CPUT) students with enhanced monitoring capabilities at the US space force station in Cape Canaveral. In a first for South Africa, a trio of locally produced Maritime Domain Awareness Satellites (MDASat) was launched in accordance with government’s efforts to track and monitor the country’s maritime traffic. The R27-million project has been mandated by the Department of Science and Innovation to enhance South Africa’s oceanic sovereignty. On a small scale, the country has been involved in space activities since the dawn of the space age in 1957 and even assisted with the Apollo Programme that put man on the moon. Etnard Louw, CPUT satellite system engineer, said that they’d been working on the project for the past three years. Innovation: African Space Innovation Centre (ASIC) team is happy with the progress made by the Marine Domain Awareness Satellites mission, which was successfully launched. The team has achieved the first milestone with the three satellites, which is to communicate with them and receive the beacon from each satellite.

A number of people on the beach noticed that the two teenagers were in difficulty and when one of the swimmers waved an arm, indicating that they needed assistance, three sixteen-year-old friends ran to their tent to get their fins and their body boards to go and help.

Acting Chief Engineer on the project, Nyameko Royi says: “At 22:55 hours after the launch we managed to receive the beacon from all three satellites and verified their status with correct battery voltage, the status of the On-Board Computer Image and deployment of the UHF antennae.”

The lifeguards had left the beach for the day as their duty was finished, and were not available. The three youngsters all sixteen years old, had the forethought to take an extra body board with them as well as a lifeguard’s torpedo buoy and the Pink Rescue Buoy 31-07 which was sponsored by FEM. They quickly reached the two swimmers who were exhausted. The Pink Rescue Buoy and body board was used to help the two float and regain their strength. Without the bravery of these three young men, the two swimmers (both approximately 14 years old) may have drowned. The rescue was well planned and the three rescuers made sure that they had ample flotation for themselves and for the two who were in difficulty. The rapid response with ample emergency flotation saved two lives without risking the lives of the rescuers. This is highly commendable. The Pink Rescue Buoy, which helped one boy to float means that the Pink Buoys have been used to save 91 lives that we know of at the date of writing. “We managed to also send telecomands to the satellites and successfully received the telemetry.” Book a Table

Walking into Henri’s, you’ll be greeted by the owner, Pierre and his staff, who will treat you like guests in our own home. Henri’s combines an inspired menu with a casually sophisticated setting in a heritage house conveniently situated on Somerset West Main Road. We also welcome larger groups, our top floor has been renovated and can be used for private functions. Our inviting, comfortable dining room is the perfect place to enjoy a great meal.

Royi adds that the team has not experienced any serious challenge as yet, “although we did have Satellite A booting into fail-safe mode, but that was sorted immediately by requesting the OBC to reset and within the following pass the issue was resolved.” He says the team is currently in the process of commissioning the Altitude Determination Control System which provides a total control of the satellite’s orbit, that is going to take about two weeks. Reflecting on the progress made since the launch, Royi says: “We are all excited about the project, we are hopeful that we are not to experience any major concerns from the satellites. Regarding the ZACube-2, we have six passes a day we have three in the morning, and we have another three in the evening,” Royi elaborates. In addition, Royi says: “I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the project, current CPUT employees and former colleagues. I would like to extend this appreciation to other companies that support our mission, being directly or indirectly involved with the mission.”

Celebrate 363 years of the SA wine industry Raise a glass and celebrate 363 years of South African wine heritage on 2 February 2022. This momentous day marks the start of our winemaking industry. South Africa is the only country in the world that can accurately pinpoint the date of origin of our wine industry, thanks to Jan van Riebeeck’s diary entry on 2 February 1659 which read: “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes.” “This occasion has become a significant and truly memorable day for both wine appreciators and winemakers.” “It honours the birth of the wine industry in South Africa, it asks for a blessing on the new harvest, and pays tribute to the trailblazers in the industry,” says Jean Naudé, CEO of Groot Constantia. “We are excited by the upcoming harvest season and look forward to celebrating it with the rest of the industry, and wine lovers across the globe,” says Naudé. Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine-producing farm established in 1685 by the then Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, and is considered the historical birthplace of the South African wine industry. “We encourage you to support participating wineries in their harvest festivities by sharing your news, stories and enjoying a glass of South African wine.”

Jess van Dyk to open new restaurant in Stellenbosch Stellenbosch’s Old Post Office on the corner of Bird and Plein street will soon welcome a new eatery called Post & Pepper; the brainchild of chef and owner Jess van Dyk and restaurant manager Dimitri Hadzigrigoriou, both formerly of Franschhoek’s Protégé restaurant. Jess was previously Head Chef at Eat Out Restaurant of the Year in 2019, La Colombe, before taking the helm at Protégé and assisting with the expansion of the group into Franschhoek. Hadzigrigoriou joins the team and has honed his world-class service style at some of South Africa’s top restaurants: The Test Kitchen, Epice and Protégé. Jess’s vision is to celebrate her own South African food heritage, mixed with global influences, in a casual space (the restaurant will be situated in the heart of the bustling university town).

“We want to offer everything that guests love about the ‘fine dining restaurant experience’, but without any of the stiffness,” says the chef. “Or the intimidating price tag!” adds Dimitri with a shy smile. Guests can look forward to reinvented classics from Jess’s childhood in the Northern Cape, such as koeksisters, lieslap or skaapstertjies on the braai. Post & Pepper will be about family-style dining, with dishes that can be shared (or not!) depending on the occasion. “We prefer not to bind our patrons by any rules, they should feel comfortable and right at home” adds Jess. “Our first goal is to create delicious food. Our second goal is to turn our guests into regulars, and ultimately: friends.” Post & Pepper is due to open in mid-February 2022 for lunch and dinner.

Excellent choice

The benefits of CBD

for over-50s wishing to retire

How will it help me? – CBD has been shown in many studies to reduce anxiety, aid sleep, and reduce pain & inflammation.

The Somerset Lifestyle & Retirement Village is an outstanding retirement village in Somerset West. An Excellent choice for over-50s wishing to retire in a quality, secure environment. You will never tire of the beauty of the surrounding peaceful, vacation-like ambience. The Somerset meets all practical lifestyle requirements and is pet friendly with professional healthcare and advanced security measures.

What is CBD?- CBD is the abbreviation for Cannabidiol, one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The two main cannabinoids are THC and CBD. THC is the psychoactive compound that creates the ‘high’ sensation, whereas CBD will not. CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and mixed with a carrier oil (usually MCT coconut) to create CBD oil, which is taken orally. CBD can also be applied topically as a cream - ideal for muscle and joint pain. Terpenes - Terpenes are aromatic compounds that are found in several species of plants and herbs. These are the compounds that give plants their characteristic scents. Essentially, terpenes make pine smell like pine and lavender smell like lavender. The cannabis plant has very high concentrations of over 200 different terpenes. Terpenes bind to our brain’s receptors when we consume them. This produces a physiological response that can influence the production of different neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. In other words, terpenes can have a positive impact on our physical, mental, and emotional health.

The Somerset is situated at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains with spectacular views and is conveniently located to a range of local amenities, shopping malls, excellent hospitals, golf courses & sports facilities. The estate, created by the award-winning Westacre Property Group, has homes of uncompromising and solid construction, positioned to make the most of breathtaking False Bay and Mountain views. Plot are carefully levelled to facilitate ease of movement around the property. Innovative terracing maximises views were possible with attractive landscaping, including parks, water features and peaceful communal gardens with indigenous plants. The design honours the architectural vernacular of the winelands as well as the original architecture of Somerset West, marrying The Somerset perfectly with its surroundings. Choose from a range of property options to suit your unique needs- 2 and 3 bedroom Freehold homes, 1 and 2 bedroom Life Right Apartments and 1 and 2 bedroom Life Right Cottages are available, with varying views and layouts.

Entourage effect – The Entourage Effect occurs when all the chemicals in cannabis work synergistically to create enhanced physical effects. Terpenes present in CBD oil help the body in three important ways. They improve our ability to absorb beneficial chemicals through the blood-brain barrier, overcome bacterial defence mechanisms, and increase the absorption and effectiveness of cannabinoids. This means that a broad spectrum CBD product with added terpenes is far more effective than a product that only contains CBD. Is it legal – CBD is legal in South Africa, whereas THC may not be sold? CBD is also not regarded as a prohibited substance for athletes and sports people. For more information visit www.yenn.co.za or Email info@yenn.co.za

The estate boasts a stylish clubhouse, gym, library, conference room and chapel at your disposal, 24 hour security and access control allowing to live as independently as you wish, with the reassurance of comprehensive support available from the Health Care Centre whether it be in a private en-suite room at the centre or a tailor made care package to suit your needs within your own home. Western Cape & Hermanus Property Set to Out perform in 2022 home seek the benefits of the ideal rural lifestyle of a waterfront location with sea and mountain views, within a beautiful vineyard estate, with all the benefits that it offers. “Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is low-density and there is ample private space between each house and plot for complete tranquillity and relaxation. You can also participate if you choose in the life of the adjoining wine farm and hospitality area. This includes wine tastings and other events, including the Winemakers Dinner hosted by our own, award-winning Johann Fourie and his team, to celebrate the harvest.

As ‘semigrants’ continue to migrate to the Western Cape from other areas of South Africa, the province is likely to outperform economically and in terms of property sales, says Penny Streeter, owner of Benguela Cove Lagoon Estate, Hermanus: “This is based on the province’s ability to recruit skilled immigrants with high purchasing power, which is critical for economic growth, and which has lately improved. Omicron may have dampened the market slightly, but now that the evidence appears to be that it is a much milder form of Coronavirus, with significantly fewer hospitalisations, all indicators are that this year will progress as 2021 ended - encouragingly, with growing demand driving purchases, particularly in prime coastal locations like Hermanus.” Recently, the Western Cape has been the most popular semi-migration destination in the country because of the growing recognition, at home and abroad, that the province offers a great lifestyle as well as significant economic potential. It is also seen as a region with relatively well-run provincial and local governments. As time has passed, communication and information technology has improved and enabled businesses and individuals to work nationally and internationally with far greater ease and confidence. There is also an encouraging level of new property enquiries at the Benguela residential estate from Cape Town, as homeworkers and those wanting a second

“There are popular wine tasting pontoon tours of the cove, the Moody Lagoon restaurant where you can enjoy delicious food with the produce from the wine and olive farm, as well as arts events and exhibitions. These include the stunning sculpture park, with the works of Anton Smit, and live music; the summer programme that’s now on is a big success, and supports local artists.” The 200-hectare estate features 124 plots. Over half of these are now developed as luxury waterside properties by their private owners, all with fully managed security, water and other services and good Wi-Fi coverage. The residential plan at Benguela Cove is designed to give new plot buyers freedom of expression when designing a new home whilst preserving and protecting the harmony achieved through architectural controls that apply to all new developments. It has received numerous international accolades, including the Titan Property Award. “The standards allow for a modern or traditional take on Cape vernacular architecture. They were created to maintain the estate’s rural character and stunning views. By mixing both built and natural fabric, the development achieves a balance between luxurious estate living and pristine nature,” says Penny Streeter. Environmental protection and improvement is a passion of the estate developer and management team of the wine farm. This has resulted in many awards in recent years, including as a World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) Conservation Champion. Stellenbosch students choose secure living near campus An attraction highlighted was the benefits of being within walking or cycling distance of the university’s facilities, as well as the face-to-face academic support. As a result of this desire to live on or close to campus, there has been no let-up in the demand for student accommodation in Stellenbosch. Da Vinci, Deo Gloria, 17 on Cluver and Archimedes are student-only developments taking every aspect of a student’s lifestyle into account and because they are semi-furnished, they ensure hassle-free accommodation from the outset. Deo Gloria comprises studios, lofts and two or three-bedroom apartments situated on the Green Route on Cluver and Merriman Roads, near the campus and patrolled by security guards on foot and bicycles. Another development, 17 on Cluver also enjoys beautiful Stellenbosch views and a natural ambiance from its sought-after position on the Green Route. Stellenbosch University students adding to the varsity town’s hustle and bustle with their lively conversations and teasing laughter are happy to be back on campus. Particularly those, it seems, who have grasped the opportunity to test their independence in an environment geared to support them as they learn, grow and thrive. That’s the finding of a ‘spot survey’ by Pam Golding Properties’ Stellenbosch office of several of the first young adults on campus to settle down in hostels, apartments, or ‘digs’ ahead of 2022 classes resuming.

Archimedes is situated opposite the university’s world-renowned Engineering Faculty and comprises a studio and two-bedroom with comprehensive security systems and green structures in place, it offers a secure, eco-friendly lifestyle. Other developments marketed by Pam Golding Properties include Bosmans Club and The Niche, which are not student-only buildings, but include apartments with more than two bedrooms, making them ideal for students’ parents to use when visiting.

Cape Town Art Fair

THE NEWSPAPER

Stellenbosch StreeT Soirées Experience Stellenbosch in all its good-living glory during the town’s annual Street Soirées, a series of relaxed food-and-wine tastings underway from the end of this month. The popular events have become a calendar highlight as the perfect way to see in the new year and enjoy balmy evenings in South Africa’s premier cultural destination. The Street Soirées are presented by Stellenbosch Wine Routes and feature an array of participating restaurants and wineries. This is the opportunity to taste a variety of Stellenbosch wines and sumptuous street-food in a social, open-air setting. For the occasion, one of the town’s main roads is closed off, allowing visitors to snack and sip through fine local fare. Drostdy Street is also one of the historic town’s oldest and most scenic, which has made the event even more memorable.

The 9th edition of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair will take place between 18-20 February 2022 at the Cape Town International Convention (CTICC). Cape Town Art Fair offers an intimate experience of the largest contemporary art fair in Africa, in one of the world’s most vibrant art cities - the place where the fast-growing African art market and the international art world meet.

So too the gathering itself. For many of its loyal fans, Stellenbosch Street Soirées have become a way to re-connect with friends after the holiday season.

Investec Cape Town Art Fair’s focus for its ninth edition is shared-support, collaboration, and inspiring new initiatives to ensure momentum and establish a support system among exhibitors. “We believe in the art fair model to bring people together to connect, converse and contemplate at the forefront of contemporary art.” The 2022 edition of the fair looks profoundly to the notion of collaboration across aspects of Investec Cape Town Art Fair intending to open up a dialogue and a shared support structure, with an exchange of ideas, research, artists, strategies and resources. The SOLO section will feature works by several emerging and established artists from around the world. This section offers a more in-depth view of varied artistic practices from a wide cross-section of contexts - in the form of curated solo presentations. In its fourth iteration, SOLO will explore how artists have reacted to intimacy and introspection caused by the pandemic, as well as the effect of exchange and collaboration on artistic practice.

Irma Stern Museum turns 50

But don’t just plan to go to one! Each Soirée features different wineries, giving you the chance to experience more than a few, and to keep the good vibes going. The 2022 Stellenbosch Street Soirées take place on February 9 and 23, and March 9 and 23. For more information visit www.wineroute.co.za

The Bridge House Mile is back! Bridge House and Old Mutual Wealth look forward to taking the Bridge House Mile to a new level and making it an even greater event. The event returns on 12 March 2022 to its traditional home - the iconic Berg River Dam near Franschhoek. Available classes for the event: Mile Swim (1.6 km), 200 m Swim, 200 m & 400 m Combo, 200 m & 800 m Combo, 200 m & Mile Combo, 200 m +400 m +800 m +Mile Package, 400 m Swim, 400 m & 800 m Combo, 400 m & Mile Combo, 800 m Swim and 800 m & Mile Combo. From its lush, secluded garden that begs for picnickers, to its Edwardian architectural grandeur, to the astonishing, vibrant interior brimming with cultural and historical artefacts from far-flung travels, to one of the world’s most impressive collections of South African expressionist art, the Irma Stern Museum is nothing short of a national treasure. If it’s not yet on your bucket list, add this Rosebank, Cape Town destination to your must-see line-up of things to do! In 2022, this cultural gem celebrates its 50th year with a stimulating schedule of star-studded exhibitions, events and talks. Once the home of one of South Africa’s best known and internationally renowned painters, the Irma Stern Museum has been perfectly preserved just as the flamboyant artist left it. Even if her resplendent paintings – some of the most famous in the country and commanding the highest ever prices on auction – don’t intrigue you, the house itself warrants a visit just for a voyeuristic glance into how this larger-than-life personality lived a bold and unapologetic life dictated entirely by her own tastes. She collected Roman, Pre-Columbian American and Eastern pieces, which are displayed alongside furniture from Medieval and Renaissance Europe. The Rosebank museum abounds with unusual keepsakes from Irma’s landmark journeys from Cape Town into various parts of Africa, travels which so impacted on the subject of her paintings. For its 50th anniversary, the museum is welcoming its diverse local audiences to enjoy all that the property already has to offer, but there is also a special programme of events throughout the year. The first exhibition, by internationally recognised contemporary artist Athi Patra Ruga, runs from 19 March to 18 June 2022.

2022 CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR The Cape Town Cycle Tour, presented by Pick n Pay, is all set for March 13, 2022 with a limited field of 22 500 expected and a pre-race Expo confirmed. This year’s event will be the 44th edition. Last year the Cape Town Cycle Tour was postponed to October 10 as a result of Covid restrictions with a limited field of 18 000. This year organisers have confirmed a larger capacity, but Covid protocols will still apply. “After missing out on our traditional March date last year, we are delighted to be back to our usual date in 2022,” event director, David Bellairs said. “Last year we were oversubscribed with our limited field and glad that we can now expand the entry limit to accommodate more riders in 2022.” Organisers also confirmed that the traditional pre-race Expo will go ahead this year, after being limited in 2021.

The Expo will take place at the Cape Town Stadium as part of the registration process. Details of the registration process are still to be announced, but Covid protocols will be in place as was the case in 2021. “The safety of our riders during registration and the race itself is our top priority,” Bellairs continued.
