Just when tourism was booming, and it felt like the world was becoming smaller, Covid exploded and pushed us all apart – literally. We dove into our own bubbles where we learnt new ways to earn, educate and entertain. As restrictions ease, a new, hybridised human is emerging. A mix of new skills with old addictions – the need to travel is stronger than ever.

Bleisure travel is the practice of extending business travel for leisure purposes, or otherwise combining work and leisure during a business trip. Although this term was first coined in 2011, the Covid pandemic ballooned the subscription; working from home taught us that we can work from anywhere. Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group says, “Remote and Hybrid working has seen us welcome a flurry of Bleisure guests into our once, mostly-leisure-guest-filled hotels and resorts.”

The challenge, which began on 1 January 2022, and will end on the 31st December 2022, came about as a means to show youngsters the power of a strong work ethic and demonstrate that they can achieve anything they set their hearts and minds to.“What youngsters in our society need today, is a good role model, to show them that there are opportunities outside of drugs, crime and gangsterism. I hope my challenge will be a beacon of hope for those in disadvantaged communities,” says Rudy.

Rudy, who has worked with several charities since matriculating high school in 2014, is focused this year on uplifting a new organisation, Angels SA, located in his hometown of Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. With a crowdfunding campaign launched on Backabuddy, Rudy hopes to raise R1 Million, which the organisation can use to purchase a safe house for children.

Since the launch of his campaign Rudy has raised almost R5000, with kind contributions from 17 donors. Thus far, Rudy has completed 44 climbs up Table Mountain, covering a distance of over 100 km, and has been joined by more than 15 individuals supporting his cause.

“Working full-time, living with epilepsy, and struggling financially, with the physical demands of his challenge, has been difficult but no less rewarding. Just as life is difficult for so many people, this challenge hasn’t been a walk in the park, but I remain positive, and through God’s grace I am finding balance. I am putting one foot in front of the other, concentrating on the important things in life and trying my best to create positive change,” says Rudy.

| Jungle aims to unite South Africans in performing one million little acts of heart

South Africa is heading optimistically into 2022, after having persevered through two of the country’s most challenging years. A live “Heart-O-Meter” will track and record Heartie’s progress and will serve to let South Africans know how close they are to reaching their collective goal, as well as inspire the nation to continue performing their good deeds.

| Capetonian Brett Mason kitesurfs across False Bay

On Thursday, 17 February, Capetonian kitesurfer Brett Mason successfully completed an unsupported kite crossing of False Bay to Cape Point, rounding Cape Point and finishing at Witsands beach, Scarborough, covering a distance of 70kms in a time of three hours.

“I am so happy with the trip, what an experience. False Bay was incredible - it was the most nerve-wracking portion of the trip, being in the deep ocean, but the wind was fantastic. Swell got big at 3 metres, but I kept my eye on Cape Point and rounded the point fairly easily. The wind was really terrible after that and I thought I may need to stop, but it picked up again around Olifantsbos. After three hours in the water, I’m a bit fatigued, but so glad it’s done.”

For the past 13 years, Mason has dedicated himself to multiple kite disciplines (freestyle, wave riding and big air). As a big air rider, he has achieved a ranking on the “Woo World leaderboard” of number 38 in the world, with a 29,3 m recorded height (out of 37 thousand recorded riders). He has also surfed and kited some of the biggest waves on the South African coastline.

Mason remembers contemplating doing this crossing in the early days of his kitesurfing: “I clearly remember staring at Glencairn beach one day when the north-westerly was blowing, and thought to myself, ‘I could just pump my kite and go directly across the bay’.”

It has been a long time coming, and on Tuesday morning, 15 February, he checked the wind report, saw that the wind was going to be perfect for the crossing, and spontaneously decided that Thursday would be the day.

| R122 Million Funds Paediatric Emergency Centre On 24 February 2022, the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) opened the doors of the newly upgraded, state-of-the-art Emergency Centre. Despite the pandemic, the dedicated fundraising team reached their target of the required R122 million, of which R 1 164 193 was contributed by the Western Cape Government and the rest donated by generous donors.

During February, the Trust celebrated 28 years of giving hope and healing and is proud to have raised over R1 billion for child healthcare since its inception. The Trust’s mission is to source funding for vulnerable, sick and injured children with a vision to provide high quality, accessible child healthcare through sustainable funding.

The Emergency Centre at RCWMCH is the only paediatric Emergency Centre in Southern Africa. Operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the centre provides high quality, evidencebased medical, surgical, nursing and paramedical services. A child- and user-friendly environment is critical to maintain the high standard of care needed to minimise hospitalisation and ensure that children return home to their families. The Emergency Centre sees the full range of children who require resuscitation; this includes little ones who have been in motor vehicle accidents, suffered severe burns, heart failure and other critically ill or injured children.

There will be direct access via a new lift from EC to ICU. The faster a child is stabilised, the higher the chance of their survival and prevention of serious, long-term impact. The Hospital’s Emergency Centre serves 45,000 children a year and 53% of the little patients are under the age of five, while 25% are under one - 56% are male and 44% are female.

| Bidders sought for Newlands

| Events permit increase

The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) announced that the Newlands Rugby Stadium was to be placed on the market in a sealed bidding process. The administrator appointed by SA Rugby to regularise the affairs of the Union has retained an external consultancy to ensure the process is transparent and judged entirely on commercial merits. Entities wishing to pursue an interest in bidding may request details of the property and the terms and conditions of the bidding process from Galetti (Pty) Limited.

The Events Permit Office has issued 191 event permits between July and December of the 2021/22 financial year. This is in stark contrast to the 2020/21 financial year, when the office only issued 91 event permits.

The low numbers in the previous financial year can be attributed to the national state of disaster restrictions on gatherings, which also forced the cancellation of many events.

“This is the cleanest, fairest and most transparent method by which to hopefully secure the sale of Newlands to assist in the long-term sustainability of the Union.

We are now in a position where we can proceed to a sale, having taken some time to understand and untangle the various sale conversations that had taken place,” said an SA Rugby spokesperson.

The spokesperson said that the sealed bid process was the most transparent method to ensure the best possible outcome for WPRFU and the prospective purchaser. The process allows parties to submit several bids offering different structures along a set of guidelines issued by the seller. It also prevents any opportunity for the buying party to influence the seller; information is shared simultaneously with all parties and is coordinated externally to ensure the best outcome. The deadline for submission of non-binding offers is 15 April 2022 with submission of final binding offers on 31 May 2022.

“The increase in the number of permits is a great indication that the event’s industry is steadily recovering from the pandemic that has caused devastation to jobs and the economy. During this financial year, we have hosted major events such as the Cape Town Cycle Tour, SANLAM Cape Town Marathon and Miss South Africa, among others,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

The Events Permit Office has also issued 30 non-compliance letters, with 25 in the last three months.

For an event permit approval, it is important that event organisers produce: Detailed medical plans or confirmation from a medical service provider to undertake this work; Detailed security plans; Vendor layout plan and certificates of acceptability for food vendor, Emergency evacuation plans, Confirmation of an appropriate public liability insurance and a SAPS Risk Grading Certificate.

| American Carriers Connect Cape Town to the USA This expanded service also strengthens United’s leading network from New York/Newark. United offers service to 74 international destinations from New York/Newark. In 2022, the airline will introduce new service to additional international destinations including Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Azores, Portugal; Bergen, Norway; Tenerife, Spain and Nice, France.

Both United Airlines and Delta Airlines announced their plans to expand their services to Cape Town.

United first launched flights to Cape Town in December 2019, and it quickly became one of the airline’s marquee international routes. As of the 5th of June 2022, United plans to increase their schedule by offering three nonstop flights per week, year-round, between New York/Newark and Cape Town International Airport, subject to government approval. The new schedule means that more than 85 U.S. cities – including places like Chicago, Houston, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles – will be more conveniently connected to Cape Town.

Delta Airlines on the other hand, hopes to expand their current offering with a Cape Town/Atlanta route and has submitted an application to the US Department of Transportation for a three times weekly service between Atlanta and Cape Town, with hopes to begin the Atlanta-Cape Town service on 18 November 2022.

If approved, the standard round trip from Atlanta to Cape Town would be the airline’s second destination in South Africa, after Johannesburg, which it already serves from Atlanta.

“Over the past decade, the US has been the largest source of FDI by value into Western Cape - R19.68 Billion. The US remains a key tourism and export market for South Africa. For the first time, the US was the number one country for Western Cape exports in 2021. We are looking forward to welcoming both United Airlines and Delta Airlines to the Mother City, and we are confident that these flights will boost the province’s efforts to grow leisure tourism and help increase trade between the Cape and the US. This will contribute to growing exports, and attracting investment,” concluded Official Air Access Spokesperson and Wesgro CEO, Wrenelle Stander.

| New Market launched in the heart of the Mother City A new market has been launched in the heart of the Mother City’s CBD. Taking place in one of the most famous areas of Cape Town, Long Street, the Long Street market aims to revitalise the area and shine a spotlight on local artisan produce, food trucks, small businesses and more.

The first market took place on 29 January, and it will take place every Saturday until 23 April. The market was established by Jacked Events and the Long Street Association with support from the City of Cape Town.Giancarlo Bruno, director of Jacked events and spokesperson for the Long Street Market, explains why this market is unlike others.

Not only is the market home to a range of food trucks and the like, but it also features live performances from local and international artists, exhibitions of artwork, bars, entertainment, and artisanal stalls such as fresh producers.

Bruno adds that there will be a mix of “old and new food trucks and stalls on a weekly basis, with the aim to attract Cape Town’s best mobile gastronomy”. Each market will consist of several food stalls, eight food trucks and three stages for live music or art showcases.

“The market is unique in that Long Street is the largest permanent outdoor events space in the city – it has an unique energy, and it’s probably the only street in the country that can attract five - to seven-thousand people on any given Saturday.”

CAPSICUM CULINARY Candice Burger who lives in Parow, has been at the helm of the school for only a short time, but has already seen a number of students graduate and step straight into a job or set up their own businesses.

Says Burger: “We had a Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Learnership of 10 successful graduates who have now either found permanent placement or are entrepreneurs giving back to their community.”

Burger is a strong advocate of the school’s emphasis on entrepreneurship and studying for a skills-based qualification.

“It is vital that we teach our students entrepreneurial skills alongside the culinary ones, as both are inextricably interlinked. How you set up a catering business or a restaurant and avoid or overcome pitfalls, and how you maintain staff and a budget. These are all vital things to be aware of in the culinary industry.”

What makes Capsicum stand out from its competitors? “There are also our brilliant chef lecturers who all want the students to succeed as well as our internships and learnerships, which together form critical components to empower individuals to fulfil their passion and help build the hospitality and tourism industry,” says Burger.

Burger is a foodie at work and at home, and when she’s not in the kitchen making one of her hearty stews or baking bread she likes nothing better than to relax in front of the TV watching MasterChef. It’s not only their passion for food that inspires Burger though, but also a desire to educate the students under her care and equip them with the knowledge and the tools they will need to succeed in the culinary industry.

LAUNCHES Award-winning Stellenbosch wine estate Vergenoegd Löw will soon be home to Clara’s Barn, a new restaurant concept located in one of South Africa’s oldest barns.

The genius behind this new restaurant is none other than renowned chef Bertus Basson. This will be the second restaurant that Basson launches at the wellknown wine estate. Clara’s Barn plans to open within the first week of March this year.

Basson has been involved with Vergenoegd Löw wine estate since 2019 and says that one of the major drawcards of the new restaurant is that it will be located in one of the oldest barns in South Africa. Clara’s Barn’s kitchen will be headed by Chef Drikus Brink.

Although set in a barn, the restaurant will boast modern decor and also feature an additional space that can be used for functions of up to 80 people.

The restaurant concept is rooted in a “farm kitchen” approach with a twist, as Basson says the food offering will be refined three- and five-course menu options.

Staying true to the cattle farm roots of the wine estate, Clara’s Barn will be serving meaty dishes in an ode to its heritage.

Basson explains why he chose to open up a second restaurant at the wine estate. “This area is very central – a great meeting point for friends from Cape Town and the Winelands. The Winelands is wonderful for family, and we have a wonderful lifestyle here.” Running and operating two restaurants in the same area poses its challenges, but Basson is optimistic and shares that it has more positives to it.

42 ON SONNEBLOM DELI GOES ONLINE! The Google Review reads: “Great little deli. It is like having a reasonably priced farm stall in your neighbourhood.”

This review and hundreds more are praising the products, client service and value for money of 42 on Sonneblom Deli, a family-owned Deli in the heart of Stellenridge in Bellville. But how did this Deli start and came to be in Bellville?

Anneke van Vuuren, co-owner with her husband Franco, explains that the Deli started from cheese and olive orders for friends and family. “We are foodies and were always on the hunt for specials. We opened our house every second Saturday for order pick-ups. The orders for family and friends grew month-by-month organically to a huge Deli with over 750 products. During Covid hard lockdown, we made plans to offer private shopping to our clients and the Deli hours grew to 6 days a week. Our online shop expanded tremendously during Covid as shoppers from across SA ordered their Deli staples to be delivered. We now offer a big range of gluten-free, keto, plant-based and low sugar products. We also do gift hampers (we call them Love Boxes) for corporate clients like FNB, Harcourts and Santam.”

The 42 on Sonneblom Deli-team now faces another challenge, with municipal by-laws prohibiting them to run the business from their home in Stellenridge. “We are shifting our business to a fully-fledged online Deli with no brick-and-mortar shop,” says Franco.

“According to a 2021 interview Mckinsay and Company had with a Russian food retailer, consumption will revolve around two main paradigms: one is food as a utility, and the second is food as a pleasurable experience. For the first one, food basics and utility items, the things that you always stock in your pantry, consumers will shift to fulfillment by subscription or online delivery. For the second one, choosing your own food and treating meals as an interesting and pleasurable experience, people will go to physical locations like supermarkets.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that the National Government will be looking into implementing a Remote Work Visa is very welcome.

“Just over a year ago, I first highlighted the economic spin-offs of this new visa when Cape Town made the Big 7 Travel website’s ‘Best cities for remote working’ list. Since then, the City in partnership with Cape Town Tourism (CTT) hosted a Remote Work Webinar that brought together tourism and hospitality sector stakeholders who shared insights on how and why to appeal to ‘digital nomads,” says Mayco Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos. “We have learnt that each one of these working tourists tend to spend up to R50 000 during their stay, which has the potential to add up to a significant boom for the economy. This revenue reaches multiple industries, including educational institutions, transport, accommodation, retail, and restaurants.”

“Under my proposal, the National Government would simply need to make an amendment to Section 11 of the Immigration Act, which relates to an extension of visas beyond 90 days for specific activities. This is because remote workers tend to stay beyond three months in a location.”

Made in Cape Town (MiCT) initiative, launched in November 2021 by the Craft and Design Institute and the City of Cape Town’s Enterprise and Investment department is to promote the pulling power of small and local businesses as significant contributors to the local economy. The numbers tell one story, but more relevant to the reasons why ‘local is lekker’ are the human faces behind the number; the people who are hustling every day to put food on the table for their staff and communities. Their commitment to building their businesses and looking after their staff offer a very human perspective on the economic indicators.

A MiCT survey conducted in December 2021 revealed that nearly 60% of people (out of 251 respondents) always buy products they know are produced locally.

Rugby World Cup Sevens to be hosted in September World Rugby has announced the countdown for Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 – to be hosted in Cape Town in September. Ticket sales opened on Monday, 28 February 2022 – for the three-day spectacular, which will see the eyes of the global rugby family turned on South Africa as the best players in the world from 40 teams battle for the tile of men’s and women’s world champions.

Organisers are planning for a packed stadium with more teams, more action and more at stake than ever before for a Cape Town event.

“The global vaccine roll-out has allowed the return of capacity crowds around the world, and we’re expecting that experience to return to South Africa by the time of the Rugby World Cup,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby.

“The opportunity of seeing the best rugby teams on the planet vying for the title of world champions hasn’t been experienced in South Africa since 1995 which will make this an exceptional occasion. World Cups are unlike any other rugby tournament; for its duration the eyes of the rugby world will be on South Africa, as all roads lead to Cape Town.”

Pink buoy saves another South African life Mardus Strydom, a 38-Year-old Cape Town resident who was rescued from drowning by a local beachgoer while swimming at Clifton 4th recently, has indicated that he would be donating R50 000 to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

Mardus was enjoying a beautiful morning swim with friends when his limbs started to give in as he attempted to make his way back to shore. Strydom was terrified as he found himself momentarily unresponsive while caught in a rip current.

Strydom apparently had no clue that he had swum that deep into the ocean, while chatting to friends, only realising a moment later that they had swum till behind the backline. Panic took hold of him as he thought he wouldn’t be able to make it back to the beach after getting caught in a rip current.

There were a few good samaritans ready to help, as lifeguards only came on duty at 10am. Sarah Oberholzer and Jonathan Smuts were swimming about 75 meters off Clifton’s 4th Beach when Sarah noticed Strydom was unresponsive. She realised that he needed help, waved and shouted, which prompted local heroes, Struan Jamieson and Jason Fialkov to get into action and swim out to help her and Jonathan using the life-saving pink buoy located on the beach.

To show his gratitude to the NSRI and all the remarkable work they do, Strydom has pledged to donate R50 000 with friends, family and his employer adding to the funds. Despite his brush with death, Strydom states that this experience will not keep him away from the ocean water.

Kirstenbosch CONCERTS Yes, it’s official. The popular Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts return to the Garden with a two-show only, limited ticket line-up. Sizzling sunflower Bright yellow sunflowers are synonymous with summer, positivity and happy times - and there’s no better place to celebrate sunflower season than at Vergelegen wine estate in Somerset West.

A vast tract of sunflowers is in full bloom near the Stables family restaurant, which currently offers sunflower-themed items on the menu. Visitors are snapping selfies against the sunflower backgrounds and buying bunches of sunflowers to take home.

“We first sowed a large packet of sunflower seeds last year, to brighten up the garden area at the entrance to the new arboretum,” says MD Wayne Coetzer.

“We were overwhelmed at the response. People travelled long distances to take selfies in the sunflowers, and we sold hundreds of flowers.”

“This inspired us to take it to the next level and to organise a proper sunflower celebration this year.”

The Stables restaurant is decorated with freshly cut flowers – even the life-size wooden horse at the entrance has sunflowers decorating his mane. The waitrons are sporting new outfits with “Vergelegen is blooming amazing” and guests are snapping photographs against the background of bright yellow flowers.

Says Stables sous chef Roger Hindley: “We’ve incorporated sunflowers and their seeds into several dishes, and it’s the visual effect of the petals that makes an impact.”

TWO OCEANS MARATHON CONFIRMED FOR EASTER The Two Oceans Marathon (TOM) will once again be run over the Easter Weekend. The 2022 running of the Ultra Marathon will be its 51st since inception, marking the start of the second fifty years of existence for this jewel event on the Western Cape’s calendar of highlights.

The Two Oceans Marathon contributes up to R672 million to the local provincial economy annually, making it Africa’s biggest running event when measured by this metric. For the first time in its history, the race will be run over two days. The Half Marathon takes place on 16 April 2022, and the Ultra Marathon will be run on 17 April 2022.

Gear up for The Race That Measures All In 2021, the Absa Cape Epic made history by taking place, for the very first time, outside the traditional March race period; but now a sense of normality has returned as we gear up for the 18th edition of The Race That Measures All from 20 - 27 March 2022!

The 2022 Absa Cape Epic makes a grand return to Lourensford Wine Estate after eight years. For the first time in the race’s history, the Prologue, Stage 1, and the start of Stage 2 is all at the same location.

During Stage 2 of the 2022 Absa Cape Epic, teams will be required to portage up the famed Gantouw Pass for the first time in the race’s history. If special attention is paid to the rocky surface, teams will notice the rocks are scarred from early settlers’ ox wagons.

The 2022 Absa Cape Epic boasts an average of 25.72 metres of climbing per kilometre. About a hundred private farms will be traversed as teams race from Lourensford Wine Estate to Elandskloof Farm Cottages, Greyton, to Stellenbosch, and on to Val de Vie Estate.
