“So far, the non-profit National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has impacted the lives of more than 3 000 children and many communities, through their water safety programs, and I wanted to do my part in helping lower the figure of 29% of fatal drownings occurring among kids under 14 years old,” Liezel said.

Renowned fitness enthusiast Liezel van der Westhuizen has already taken on the likes of IronMan triathlons, endurance competitions, and sports challenges like tandem cycling the Himalayans with a blind athlete. Her latest conquest is another challenge with heart: taking on a challenging swim, for NSRI swim programs that are saving lives. Liezel is a volunteer in the NSRI Coastal watcher’s programme.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is a non-profit organization full of volunteers who want to educate and inform, save lives, and uplift communities however they can. Some of their volunteers will be undertaking a swim crossing to Big Bay, from the historic Robben Island, to raise funds and awareness for the NSRI’s Water Safety Education & Survival Swimming programmes.

So far, Liezel has raised R2 500, and the NSRI organization has a target of R100,000 for this fundraising initiative.

Lessons I learnt have made my business a success As the ENGEN Pitch & Polish programme celebrates its twelfth anniversary, the project is looking back at some amazing success stories to come out of the competition. This is the story of 2013 competitor, Nhlakanipho Shange, the owner of AD.IT Solutions, an outdoor media and marketing agency.

“I grew up in Umlazi, Durban and started my career studying medicine at UCT. While I was deciding whether I wanted to continue my studies, I flew down to Cape Town to conduct a feasibility study for a low-cost bakery. On the flight, I saw those dropdown screens and thought it would be a great idea to put something like that in taxis. During my stay in Cape Town, the idea kept haunting.

“When we started with taxi TV, we thought funding was the biggest problem. I now believe that, as an entrepreneur, the money will come, but that convincing the client to use your services is the key. I was helping out a friend with his business in 2013 when we came across flyers advertising the competition. At the last minute, I decided to enter.”

“Something important I learned was not to romanticise your business idea or its prospects. You need to be realistic about its prospects, the numbers and everything that goes into building it. Everything I learned during the programme has played a significant part in building my business.” Since starting up, the business has gone through so much – both good and bad. We’re currently coming back from a bit of a dip after a few years of incredible growth. I definitely recommend that anyone who is running their own business or thinking of starting one up participate in the competition. It opens your mind to a variety of possibilities for any business,” - Nhlakanipho Shange.

Given the hard work that has gone into championing values as an integral part of their learning culture, the leadership and staff of Courtrai Primary School in the Cape Winelands Education District (CWED) are determined to build on the foundations laid in their strong values programme.

“We were adamant not to replace our value’s system that all role players of our school have so overwhelmingly embraced for the last few years; in fact, if anything, we wanted to strengthen it,” said Jan Brand, principal at Courtrai.

Brand added that in the last term of 2021 all grades were asked for suggestions on how to take their “values education” forward – and that’s where the idea of a values theme for the year was born. Their theme for 2022 is ‘Courage’.

Furthermore, ‘courage’ would also be part of all gatherings in the school hall for each phase to display and engage with. The school discussed it with parents at the beginning of the year and received positive feedback.

| International Art Galleries Launch at Benguela Cove Visitors to Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate can now see the works of 30 South African artists at a new contemporary art exhibition that estate developer Penny Streeter OBE opened on 12 March 2022. This is an international art galleries series that includes events at venues in the UK owned by the Streeter family. Entry to the estate and exhibition is free of charge, which is open every day, from 10:00 - 18:00.

With its title ‘The Art of Living: Visit, Reflect, Explore and Experience’, the Benguela Cove exhibition features artists with a wide range of contemporary styles and materials. In the relaxed atmosphere of the gallery and outside areas overlooking the beautiful lagoon, guests can view the paintings and sculptures, which are all for sale, whilst enjoying award-winning wines from Benguela Cove.

Penny Streeter says: “The launch of our international Benguela Galleries here in South Africa was a great success. As a family, we champion new and established art talent at Benguela Cove and our two UK estates, at Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate and Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens in Sussex. With the growing numbers of visitors to all three venues, they offer an excellent showcase for curated art, to bring art to as wide an audience as possible.”

In 2021 at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, the Streeters created one of the largest sculpture parks in Europe, resulting from a collaboration with South African artist, Anton Smit. The featured artists for the opening of Benguela Galleries include: Ann Gadd, Anthony Gadd, Boniface Chikwenhere, Gerhard van Vuuren, Gavin Larkin, Andries Visser, Kevin van Niekerk, Jade Doreen Waller, Jimmy Law, David Kuijers, Louis Chanu, Proud Sibanda, Tertius van Dyk, Haidee Nel, Francois van Dyk and Floris van Zyl. This is a return to one of his favourite venues for Floris van Zyl. The expressionist painter’s artwork includes landscapes, still life images, portraits, animals and figure studies:

The gallery is the latest attraction for homeowners on the private estate at Benguela Cove. In the hospitality area, they and visitors can also enjoy a range of South African dishes at Moody Lagoon restaurant, prepared by noted chef Annie Badenhorst.

| SA Agullhas II plays key role in Endurance 22 expedition On Saturday, 5 March 2022 the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance was discovered - 107 years later - at a depth of 3 008 metres in the Weddell Sea, within the search area defined by the expedition team before its departure from Cape Town.

The international expedition set sail from Cape Town during February on the Cape Town-registered public research vessel, SA Agulhas II, commanded by its South African Captain, Knowledge Bengu.

The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust had chartered the SA Agulhas II, for the Expedition, with the aim of locating, surveying and filming the wreck of the Endurance, which sank during the Antarctic expedition by Sir Shackleton in 1915.

The SA Agulhas II is one of the most advanced and modern polar research vessels in the world and is used by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment for annual science and logistics expeditions into the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. The ship is a shared science platform with the Department of Science and Innovation. The vessel was chartered to perform a similar voyage in 2019, but the first search for the Endurance was unsuccessful.

| South African National Parks Protecting the ‘Mountains in the Sea’

| Netflix to invest

more than R900m in South Africa International streaming service Netflix will invest R900-million in the South African film and television industry, it announced at the 4th Annual South African Investment Conference. Four productions will come from the commitment — three local and one international — all to be filmed in South Africa by 2023.

Netflix has about 200 million members in more than 190 countries, and South Africa is becoming a popular destination. This investment will bolster the creation of jobs and also lift the local economy.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, South Africa’s film industry created 31 444 fulltime equivalent jobs, according to the National Film and Video Foundation, but this dropped to just 12 775 jobs in 2020-21.

South African National Parks (SANParks - the public institution managing South Africa’s national parks) and the Agence Française de Dévéloppement (AFD) recently launched the bipartite agreement between the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) and Reunion Island National Park worth €1.5 million. The funding is allocated to support park actions that facilitate sharing of knowledge and experiences between South Africa and Reunion Island.

“Biodiversity conservation is one of France’s priorities. Through this exemplary regional cooperation project, France is providing concrete support for the preservation of biodiversity in Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean,” - Aurélien Lechevallier, Ambassador of France to South Africa.

The indigenous people of the Cape, the Khoisan, knew Table Mountain as Hoerikwaggo, ‘the mountain in the sea’. Towering mountains rising immediately adjacent to the ocean are a dramatic and remarkable feature of both parks. TMNP covers 25,000 ha of natural areas located in the heart of Cape Town, stretching to the tip of the Cape of Good Hope. Reunion National Park covers 70% of Reunion Island’s surface area, with a central zone that houses 94% of the island’s diverse endemic biodiversity. Both parks have UNESCO world heritage status and conserve highly diverse ecosystems and cultural heritage sites of great global value.

Joint challenges include invasive alien species, illegal plant harvesting, protecting threatened species, climate change and restoring degraded habitats.

Both SANParks and PNR will contribute expertise and collaborate on improving park management. The project will enable new collaboration opportunities with partner research bodies including the University of Reunion, CIRAD and the University of Cape Town.

Netflix has partnered with local production houses to create shows such as the recent reality TV series Young, Famous & African. The company has invested more than R2-billion in South Africa, creating jobs for about 1 900 people over the past five years.

There are more than 80 South African productions on Netflix. A 2021 study by the streaming service in collaboration with SA Tourism showed that viewers surveyed in Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Brazil, the United States and Germany were more likely to make South Africa their go-to destination and to learn a local language after watching a show featuring the country.

Netflix is working with local production partners to create a number of shows, such as Project Panda, a live-action series adaptation of the anime One Piece.

Project Panda — Netflix’s biggest African production to date - will create job opportunities for about 50 cast members and 1 000 full-time crew, according to the streaming company. Netflix also has a mentorship programme for more than 30 young creatives and technicians.

to save Africa’s ancient wildlife corridors

To Stellenbosch University (SU) elephant expert Dr Katharina von Dürckheim, being in the bush is her “true north”. She has pursued this passion as a wildlife scientist, wildlife editor and in working for NGOs. Through postgraduate research she has delved into elephants’ sense of smell, and into finding ways to solve the conflict between people and these African giants. As leader of the new Wildlife Free to Roam (WFR) research programme, she now focuses her efforts to help create connectivity corridors that allow wildlife to roam more easily between many of Southern Africa’s protected areas within large transboundary conservation areas.

WFR is based in the SU Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology in the SU Faculty of AgriSciences and is supported by the Peace Parks Foundation. Von Dürckheim is currently recruiting students to her research team and dealing with the logistics of setting up a base in some of the wilder parts of Southern Africa. Her team will be working in the Greater Limpopo (GL) and Kavango Zambezi (KAZA) transfrontier conservation areas (TFCAs).

“The next important step is to create opportunities to connect these parks with each other. We must identify functional corridors and state forest reserves that will allow wide ranging species, such as the African elephant, routes to move along,” says Von Dürckheim.

“However, spatial bottlenecks are occurring. Some say that within three years, many of these corridors will be functionally extinct, with the expansion of rural settlements. There’s a certain human density across which elephants and lions will not move. It leads to populations becoming isolated, and inbreeding happens.

Connectivity is therefore important, and to look for corridors and pathways that allow wide-ranging species like elephant, lion and wild dog to roam.”

The team will also study how specific species use these as corridors. The work will be done in conjunction with stakeholders and local communities.

When Cathy and Kevin Marston founded their wine bar, The Nose, in 2001 in Cape Town, there were few who had ventured into the unique arena alongside them.

The South African Chefs Association (SA Chefs) and The Plant Powered Show (TPPS) has launched a culinary competition where the winner will share a platform with top professional and celebrity chefs at The Plant Powered Show. The show takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from Friday, May 27 - Sunday, May 29.

Rose Jordaan remembers a time when Bartinney Wine & Champagne Bar on Bird Street had few neighbours when it opened in 2013. (It is the oldest wine bar in town.)

Rose says: “Many years ago, when Bartinney Wine Bar opened, we tried to promote the idea of an Urban Walking Wine Route – it finally caught on.”

The not-to-be-missed three-day live in-person event will also incorporate an exciting virtual component, which will allow visitors from other provinces and around the globe to attend online.

The walking wine route has expanded substantially to include Plaisir Wine Lounge, Le Grande Domaine Enoteca, QBar, Stellenbosch Wine Bar and Brampton Wine Studio, Spek n Bone is a small-plates eatery and wine bar, Beyerskloof Wine Bar, Simon Wine Bar at De Warenmarkt and The Wine Glass.

The Plant Powered Show is the first of its kind in South Africa, bringing the plant-based, vegetarian, vegan and conscious living revolution to a mainstream audience. The hugely successful inaugural Plant Powered Show (under the name The Festive Vegan & Plant Powered Show) took place online in 2020.

Broadcaster and host of “Dan Really Likes Wine,” Dan Nicholl recently explored Stellenbosch wine bars for his online show and says: “I’ve always loved the idea of wine bars and the chance to sample a range of different glasses with tapas or small plates, and so setting off to explore the streets in Stellenbosch searching for wine bars had considerable appeal.”

The 2022 competition is open to all chefs, student chefs and home cooks residing in South Africa, aged 28 and younger, who are invited to submit their best vegan dish. Those entering must submit a 30-second video (or a link to where the video can be found) explaining why they should be the winner of a coveted demo spot at the TPPS, as well as a recipe using vegan-only products with a list of ingredients and the cooking method.

Entries, along with a full name, ID, email and cell number details should be sent to competitions@sachefs. co.za for the attention of Adrian VigusBrown.

Dan concludes: “There’s a real buzz to Stellenbosch presently, and the streets are alive with people enjoying a town where walking is encouraged by the layout, proximity and relative safety of the environment. Add in the wine culture that’s such a heartbeat of Stellenbosch, and small wine bars are a natural fit for the town.”

Entries are now open for the fourth compelling iteration of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search. This face-off seeks to unearth saucy new designs for Nando’s restaurants around the world, and fire up the careers of emerging local creatives.

This time around, entrants have been tasked with designing a condiment unit which will display the brand’s acclaimed Peri Peri sauces. The challenge is to do so in such a way that these sauces and their piquant ingredients, which form an intrinsic part of the Nando’s experience, remain visible and accessible to customers throughout their visit.

The end goal is to list the winning condiment unit on The Portal to Africa – Nando’s online marketplace, where interior designers working on Nando’s restaurants around the world can shop for original pieces of furniture and lighting that are designed and manufactured in South Africa.

Past years called for lighting solutions, patterns and benches; and these prior competition rounds have seen their respective finalists and winners propelled into the limelight and mentored in all things related to creating a sustainable business.

In 2020 are previous winners that have gone on to evolve and grow within the discipline.

Up-and-coming designers are challenged to bring their own “sauce” by entering vibrant, yet functional, conversation pieces, whose inspiration is rooted right here at home, on the African continent. Entries close on 31 May 2022.

Thirty years ago, Eve, Tanja Myburgh’s mother, established an equestrian business in Durbanville, called the Tack Shack. From small beginnings in 1992, and Tanja joining Eve in 1995, the business has grown into a thriving OneStop Equestrian store, employing 28 staff.

Eve started riding at Arnim’s Place Riding School on Bottelary Rd, Kuils River many years ago. After a few months, she introduced Tanja, then 10-years-old to horse-riding.

Scared and intimidated at first, Tanja soon became completely addicted to the sport. “I loved being with horses and was exhilarated by the sport and competing in events. Arnim’s Place Riding School was the beginning of my journey with horses. My mother purchased her first horse, Sirrocco, a head strong boereperd cross saddler. We loved him to bits! He taught me to ride, staying in the saddle and taking control,” Tanja says.

“On my 13th birthday my parents bought me my first horse, ‘Take it Easy Dusky’. He was a Thoroughbred and not the easiest horse to ride, but we became a great team. We took part in many competitions through my Novice and Junior riding career, and I competed in many a show and performed well. I was also chosen to represent Western Province in dressage and competed in Welkom in the disciplines of dressage, showing, eventing, and jumping. I have been riding ever since and still own 3 horses.

These days I no longer compete although I still enjoy riding,” Tanja continues.

Tack Shack Background Eve had been working for HGS Trading, a saddlery store in Durbanville (on main road next to Standard Bank) to earn an additional income for Tanja to continue riding and to maintain her own horses. When the business was liquidated, the owner asked Eve if she would be interested in purchasing the business. Although she was interested, no bank would loan her R30 000. Eventually, she found a silent partner, as well as an active partner. Each purchased a third of the business and a seed was planted. Eve had borrowed R10 000 from her sister for the start-up and the Tack Shack was established in November 1992.

“In 1995, now age of 25 and working at Old Mutual I was asked by Eve to join the business as part of a plan to buy out the partners. It was a big decision for me to move to something uncertain with no guarantees, but Old Mutual was destroying my soul.

Needless to say, I took the leap that same year and joined Eve at the Tack Shack. I have never looked back.” Tanja beamed.

“In 1996, we were presented with opportunity to purchase our own property at 17 New Street, Durbanville. Once again big decision time since the banks would not help with a 100% bond. We had to borrow the deposit from my aunt and purchased the property. Tack Shack now had its own roof. Tanja says. Sadly, Eve passed away in 2009, and she had to take up the reins.” ”Although it was a difficult time, the business continued to grow and expand. Tanja’s husband joined her in 2016 and has been a great support/sounding board for the last few years. The workshop eventually moved to another premises to make for the ever-growing retail operation.

Equestrian products Tack Shack manufactures all leather equestrian products, as well as repairing saddles. Their wholesale offering to other equestrian businesses is also showing strong growth. Tack Shack is also an importer of goods from across the globe and currently receives containers monthly.

Their reason for you having to move is normally not nearly what goes on in your mind, or heart. You start to view various places, options, and locations. Your lists don’t coincide with your children’s, and you cannot find anything that ticks all your boxes. In these times, you are often called “difficult” or “hard-headed”.

What a surprise it was when the apartment matched my idea of how I saw myself growing old. I decided there and then that this would be my new home. The better for your heart The news of a heart attack claiming the life of cricket legend, Shane Warne at only 52 years of age, has sent shockwaves across the world. His sudden passing has sparked an important conversation around men’s habits and their impact on cardiovascular health.

Nicole Jennings, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics, SA’s largest provider of cardiovascular medication, says heart attacks are no longer just linked to the aged. Now, one in five heart attack patients are younger than 40.

“What many don’t realise is that there are usually no signs or symptoms of high blood pressure (hypertension) or high cholesterol, yet both increase your risk of a heart attack and stroke. That’s why it is so important to have these checked by your GP regularly, especially if you’re 40 and older.”

Benefit your health A plant-based diet is a diet consisting mostly or entirely of plant-based foods. Plant-based or plant-forward eating patterns focus on foods primarily from plants.

Eating plant-based does not always mean having to adopt a completely meat-free diet, it is, in fact, the quality of the plant-based diet that is the most important factor to consider. Not all plant-source foods have beneficial heart health effects. A good quality plant-based diet can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes, which in itself is a risk factor for heart disease.

A very interesting study demonstrated that people who ate more whole fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, legumes, olive oil, coffee, & tea showed a much lower risk for CVD, while those who ate more unhealthy plant-based foods, like sugar-sweetened beverages, refined grains, & sweets, did not.

Healthy plant-based diets can be customised to fit individual needs and cultural preferences. A small reduction of animal-based products – particularly processed meats – can significantly help improve cardiovascular health.

The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) plans to open its Vehicle Salvage Database (VSD) to the public in a move to stop previously written-off and poorly repaired vehicles from re-entering the used market. The VSD system contains information on salvage vehicles.

eDEAF, a Deaf owned company that provides SETA accredited training with the goal of empowering Deaf communities for business, are extremely proud of eighteen of their staff members for successfully completing a Corporate MBA (cMBA). SkillsTown, in collaboration with eDEAF, made the learning accessible to the Deaf by converting all the training material into South African Sign Language (SASL). “Sadly, accessible Deaf education is scarce, and we are therefore delighted that this platform truly enables equal access to education for the Deaf community,” says Nicky Bezuidenhout, eDEAF Marketing & Communications Manager.

Electric car ‘grants’ proposed for South Africa

South Africa risks being left behind as the rest of the world moves to electric vehicles – but the introduction of grants and other incentives could improve adoption, says the Trade & Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS) group, an independent, non-profit, economic research institution established in 1996 to support economic policy development.

“Pushed by environmental regulations, support programmes and improving economics, electric vehicles (EVs), traditional hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) vehicles – are set to become dominant in the coming decades,” it said in a recent research paper. “Yet, this electric revolution risks leaving many commuters behind, further deepening inequalities between and within countries. The risk of an exclusionary, elitist transition to e-mobility is high.”

To address this divide, the group said a dual strategy is necessary to foster the overall uptake of EVs as well as incentivising an inclusive rollout that benefits all in South Africa’s society.

“This level of support can bridge the gap between electric and petrol-fuelled cars for the first two quintiles of the market.”

“A temporary cash grant or innovative financial arrangement pegged at R80,000 for BEVs, R40,000 for PHEVs and R20,000 for HEVs, is recommended as the main instrument to incentivise prospective buyers.”

“Complementarity, or alternatively, extremely low-interest loans, underpinned by development finance institutions (DFIs), could be offered to EV buyers. Second, the strategy should foster the introduction of electric vehicles in public transport,” it said.

GET YOUR OUTFITS READY FOR PINOTAGE & BILTONG FESTIVAL Get your purple and white outfits ready, round up some friends, and don’t miss out on this year’s Pinotage and Biltong Festival at Perdeberg Winery between Durbanville and Paarl. The event will take place on Saturday, 23 April and Sunday, 24 April from 11h00-16h00.

Eighteen Wineries will offer approximately 30 Pinotage wines for tasting and for sale ranging from the traditional red variant to rosé, bubbly, dessert wines and even white Pinotage.

Each winery will have one wine paired with a biltong flavour, courtesy of Afrifoods Biltong Factory.

Guests will have the unique opportunity to taste Pinotage from Stellenbosch, Swartland, Breedekloof, Paarl, Worcester and Wellington all in one space! The illustrious line-up of participating wineries: Badsberg Wine Cellar, Bellevue Wines, Beyerskloof Wines, Boland Cellar, Diemersfontein Wines, Doolhof Wine Estate, Doran Vineyards, Du Toitskloof Wines, Groenland Wyne, Hill & Dale, Kanu Wines, Koelenhof Wine Cellar, Lanzerac Wine Estate, Leopard’s Leap Wines, Mellasat Vineyards, Neethlingshof Estate, Overhex Wines & Perdeberg Cellar.

Live music by Guy Feldman and his band - aptly named Mista Guy and The Biltong Band - makes it a day to remember out in the Winelands. Dress in your funkiest purple and white outfits and stand a chance to win some prizes.

Make your run count at YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K! Runners can make their run count by supporting one of five local charities when entering the iconic Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K that will take place in the Mother City on Sunday, 15 May 2022.

A non-profit organisation, help2read’s mission is to erase illiteracy in South Africa’s disadvantaged communities, one literacy lesson at a time. Since the organisation’s first one-on-one reading session in 2006, help2read has worked in over 400 schools and reached 23 000 children through their literacy programmes.

Cotlands is a registered non-profit organisation that focuses on early childhood development (ECD) with a rich 85-year history of serving young, vulnerable children. Cotlands’ vision is to see children thrive in their formative years by increasing their access to quality play-based early learning opportunities.

Established in 1872, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and is the oldest animal welfare organisation in the country. Started in 1957, Die Burger Kinderfonds is a non-profit organisation that assists children in the community that require trauma counselling.

Event information: The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series is a diverse 10 km road running series that brings together avid runners, walkers and individuals looking to live healthier lifestyles. Although emphasis is placed on hosting a mass participation road race that highlights city landmarks, it includes magnificent views and features lively performances from some of the host city’s leading performing arts groups, all three events will also boast an exciting Contender Programme (aimed at the racing snakes), while boasting an impressive Prize Purse.
