A Record-Setting, Barrier Breaking World First
One of the most rewarding parts of an adventure is the sharing of the story. The story is what motivates people to go out and have their own adventures, to spend more time on their bicycles, by themselves, or to take on bigger challenges than they thought they could never do before.

The Guinness World Record for men cycling between Cape Town and Cairo, supported and unsupported, has been broken multiple times, but there is still no listed women’s record. Tegan Phillips, a professional cartoonist, writer, speaker and endurance adventure cyclist from Cape Town, intends to change that on 16 October 2022. She will take on the 10 600 km challenge pedalling her way through eight countries – Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa, and be the fastest woman to do it. It Is Possible “Whenever you hear in your ear the whisper of some crazy idea - don’t doubt. This adventure was chosen especially for you. So, begin with your plans, your diagrams and your dreams, and don’t feel bad if they laugh at your schemes. Just get going. When you feel stuck, and you think the adventure gods don’t give a damm, remember it’s part of the fun for things to go wrong, otherwise how could we ever get strong? Yes, to spite how it seems – these things in the sky are cheering us on. So, we might as well try. Take as long as you need to sit down and cry, but then get your butt right up and hold your head high. Even if you feel that your quest feels small, with every step forward you are crushing a wall – and with every wall crushed your life grows a little more. Until you look back and can heartily believe how it once was before. So, say ‘yes’ the next time you hear that call. Say okay, I’ll try and get out the door. When people say: This can’t be. Is it humanly possible? If it is – as long as I am human – it is possible for me,” says Tegan. 100 Bikes for Women in Khayelitsha Tegan is cycling for an epic cause. “One of the best ways to empower a girl or woman is to give them a bicycle. It’s mobility, confidence, health and freedom all rolled into two wheels and a metal frame. Through this expedition, we are aiming to raise 100 bicycles for women in Khayelitsha through Khaltsha Cycles,” Tegan concludes.

Chris Bertish, internationally acclaimed speaker, author, big wave surfer, Guinness SUP World Record holder and conservationist, announces plans to launch the Transpacific Wing Project again in late May to early June. The world’s first solo, wing foil, transpacific crossing will launch from Channel Islands Harbor Marina. The new expedition will be slated to finish at the end of July to the beginning of August in Oahu, Hawaii. In June 2021, Bertish achieved a world record for the longest distance travelled on a wing-foil, solo and unsupported at 212 miles. During his initial launch from Half Moon Bay in June 2021, Bertish made the critical decision to temporarily halt the project and head into Morro Bay for repairs. This next attempt will require Bertish to complete the equivalent of more than two full marathons per day, winging a minimum of 8-12 hours per day, for over sixty days, unsupported and completely unassisted. One step, one mile, one action at a time “I’ll hope for a great weather window to get away from land and then take it one day at a time from there. Like always, one step, one mile, one action at a time, just like dealing with climate change. All small actions all add up to make a massive change and impact. But we all need to start by doing one small thing, acting, every day, in some small way,” said Bertish.
NOTICE Articles and Advertisements published in The Newspaper is not necessarily the opinion of The Newspaper unless so stated.
The Transpacific Wing Project will raise money and awareness for ocean conservation through partnerships with Conservation International and Sea Shepherd, all facilitated through the Chris Bertish Foundation with the goal of building awareness, giving back and being a beacon of inspiration and positive change for youth and the world. The team is also developing a first-of-its-kind live ocean classroom to give back to education during the expedition - in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Chris will assemble and teach ocean-themed classroom sessions focused on ocean health and climate change challenges through solution-driven thinking on how all humans can minimize their negative impact, act, and be part of the change we want to see in the world.

| Vergelegen Wine Estate welcomes the Quagga Project Visitors to Vergelegen wine estate might think they’ve tasted a little too much of its delightful wine when they spot a zebra sub-species that was hunted to extinction about 150 years ago. Their eyes aren’t deceiving them, however, as this Somerset West estate, which is widely acknowledged for its environmental and sustainability initiatives, is now home to seven ‘Rau’ quagga – one stallion, five mares, and a foal. The relocation of these rare animals to Vergelegen is the latest milestone in an ambitious project, initiated in 1987, to bring the quagga back from extinction and to introduce them to reserves similar to their former habitat. Quagga once roamed South Africa in large herds, particularly in the Karoo and southern Free State, until they were hunted out in the second half of the 19th century. The last known mare died in Amsterdam Zoo in 1883. To mitigate this, a dedicated group of conservationists in the Quagga Project have been selectively breeding from a founder population of southern Plains Zebras in order to retrieve the genes responsible for the animals’ characteristic hide pattern. They describe their breeding animals as Rau quagga, in memory of Reinhold Rau who founded the project. The seven animals from the Quagga Project were transported from Pampoenvlei in the Atlantis/ Darling area on Tuesday 10 May. They are now settling down in a 180 hectare reserve area which includes natural grazing – a mix of renosterbos, Boland granite fynbos and various grasses – and plentiful water from the farm’s Langkloof Dam. The quagga share this area with five eland that were introduced to the estate in 2020.
| Which do you think is the greatest city on Earth? A ranking using objective measures has put Cape Town above heavy hitters including Paris, Tokyo, London and New York.
The UK’s Telegraph newspaper went on a mission recently to find the answer. Starting with its own pick of 50 contenders for the top spot, it whittled this down using an annual reader survey plus input from a panel of travel writers. Next it assigned each shortlisted city a score based on a range of factors, from the number of museums and galleries, Unesco Heritage Sites, Michelin restaurants and five-star hotels counted in each city, to air cleanliness, to how they measure on safety for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Bonus points were awarded for cities with a beach, canal system or river; a symphony orchestra; and a sophisticated metro system. Out of a possible 810 points, the highest score — and title of “greatest city on Earth” — went to Barcelona, Spain. The newspaper praised the city for its “relaxed pace, months of endless sunshine, unbeatable food and the best cultural and design clout of almost any city in the cold north”. In second place was Sydney, Australia, which was called a “functional, stressfree city” with low urban density, plenty of green space, a low-emission ranking and dozens of five-star hotels. And in third place, and highest-ranking city in Africa, was Cape Town. The newspaper says its “topography and geography alone make [it] stand out above the others” and that its beaches, copious sunshine hours and towering Table Mountain, the latter providing the highest view and the biggest green space out of any city in the list, bumped it into a podium position.

| South African becomes

THE NEWSPAPER
| Do something remarkable donate blood
A South African paraglider and climber has become the first person to legally paraglide off Mount Everest on 15 May - opening doors for ‘climb and fly’ adventurers on the world’s highest mountain. Pierre Carter hopes to fly off the highest peak of every continent, having already flown off five and summited six. Others have flown off Everest before, a solo pilot and two tandem teams, but none of these flights were authorised by the Nepalese government. Carter had a narrow window of opportunity, telling Times Live: “I had to choose because the wind was picking up and the weather was closing in.” Having nearly passed out from the exertion of running 30 m to get airborne at Everest’s high altitude, Carter took to the skies. “I’m feeling ecstatic,” Carter said. The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) has struggled in recent weeks to maintain the necessary blood stock levels. At the same time, there is an increasing demand for blood to perform transfusions within the healthcare system. The Western Cape Blood Service is a non-profit, independent organisation operating throughout the Western Cape. They work without prejudice to supply safe blood and blood products to all communities in the region, from Cape Town all the way up to George. It’s their goal to be the benchmark transfusion service in South Africa. By donating blood, you could save up to three people’s lives. The blood you donate today, can help people who have suffered severe and traumatic injuries, childbirth, surgery, suffer from anaemia or have blood disorders, as well as people who are receiving treatment for cancer. According to the WCBS, there is a critical shortage in blood groups, O, B and A. So please, do not delay – and help save a life in the Western Cape by donating blood. WCBS have 5 permanent blood donation centres in Cape Town (N1 City Mall, Blue Route Mall, 9 Long Street, Cape Town CBD, Cape Gate and Kenilworth Centre) and 3 regional branches (Worcester, George, Paarl). Carter began climbing as a teenager and soon became interested in paragliding. Since 2005, he has flown off five of the seven mountains that make up the tallest summits on their respective continents, beginning with Russia’s Mount Elbrus. Carter reached the summit of Alaska’s Denali in 2016, but was not permitted to fly. He next aims to repeat the feat off Mount Vinson in Antarctica this December.

Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson used a visit to Cape Town to announce the resumption of direct seasonal Virgin Atlantic flights between Cape Town and London after a seven-year hiatus. The new flights will add over 80,000 seats between the two cities from November, but will only run until the end of the peak tourist season. Before the announcement, Branson drove the streets of Cape Town in an opentop bus waving a South African flag. He has a long history with South Africa, and expressed a deep love for Cape Town. He is primarily in the city to raise money for foundations linked to the late Desmond Tutu. “Who wouldn’t want to come to Cape Town? It’s the most special place in the world. The challenge for us now is to try and get it, so we can come 12 months of the year,” Branson said. “The decision to resume direct flights was due to the sustained growth in tourism in Cape Town and a lot of work in terms of re-rationalising our fleet, “ Liezl Gericke, Virgin Atlantic’s head of Africa, the Middle East, and India said. The seasonal Virgin Atlantic service launches in November 2022 and will operate as a night flight departing Heathrow at 4:20 PM, arriving in Cape Town at 6 AM. The return route will depart at 8 AM, landing later that day at 5:45 PM. The Cape Town flights will be operated on Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft and offer customers Upper Class, Premium and Economy Light, Classic, and Delight cabins.

How will it help me? – CBD has been shown in many studies to reduce anxiety, aid sleep, reduce inflammation and enhance mood.
Muscle and joint pain is a common problem for many people, especially for the elderly. Almost all creams currently available are formulated with many undesirables such as parabens, petroleum derived synthetics, formaldehydes and PEGs. (Polyethylene glycol). Yenn has developed an effective range of Natural creams without these additives.
What is CBD?- CBD is the abbreviation for Cannabidiol, one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The two main cannabinoids are THC and CBD. THC is the psychoactive compound that creates the ‘high’ sensation, whereas CBD will not. CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and mixed with a carrier oil (usually coconut) to create CBD oil. Terpenes - Terpenes are aromatic compounds that are found in several species of plants and herbs. These are the compounds that give plants their characteristic scents. Essentially, terpenes make pine smell like pine and lavender smell like lavender. The cannabis plant has very high concentrations of over 200 different terpenes. Terpenes bind to our brain’s receptors when we consume them. This produces a physiological response that can influence the production of different neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. In other words, terpenes can have a positive impact on our physical, mental, and emotional health. Entourage effect – The Entourage Effect occurs when all the chemicals in cannabis work synergistically to create enhanced physical effects. Terpenes present in CBD oil help the body in three important ways. They improve our ability to absorb beneficial chemicals through the blood-brain barrier, overcome bacterial defence mechanisms, and increase the absorption and effectiveness of cannabinoids. This means that a CBD product with added terpenes is far more effective than a product that only contains CBD. Is it legal – CBD is legal in South Africa, whereas THC may not be sold. CBD is also not regarded as a prohibited substance for athletes and sports people. Yenn has developed a range of CBD oils with the optimal combination of terpenes for specific ailments. CBD (600mg) CALM drops - CBD oil combined with a world-leading pure terpene combination specifically formulated to reduce anxiety and aid sleep. CBD (600mg) RELIEF drops - CBD oil combined with a patented world-leading pure terpene combination specifically formulated to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
Cayenne Cream with capsicum extract, baobab, frankincense, rosemary, myrrh, ginger, cedarwood and clove. The warming effects of capsicum stimulate the flow of blood to the affected area, resulting in a decrease in inflammation. Ideal for arthritis or for use before exercise. Magnesium Cream - 20% magnesium with sweet almond oil, peppermint and camphor. Ideal for recovery after sport, heavy/restless legs and cramps. CBD (400mg) Cream - CBD combined with baobab, wintergreen, rosemary and clove. Used for arthritis and pain relief. Menthol Cream - 3.5% menthol extracted from the peppermint plant, combined with wintergreen, eucalyptus, camphor, and clove. Cooling sensation for immediate relief from muscle pain.
M agnes ium The health benefits of magnesium include- improved energy levels, improved exercise performance, reduced anxiety/stress, improved quality of sleep, a decrease in inflammation in the body. Magnesium is required in over 300 processes in the body and is often not available in optimal quantities. The most effective way to ensure you have sufficient magnesium is to eat a diet that is high in nuts, seeds, legumes and leafy green vegetables. Unfortunately, this will often not be enough. Magnesium supplementation may be necessary. Magnesium is generally difficult for the body to absorb. The best form of magnesium supplement is an Amino Acid Chelate, which is well absorbed and tolerated by the body. Magnesium is also absorbed transdermally with the use of a cream or a magnesium oil. Yenn has a range of magnesium cream, magnesium oil and capsules. Yenn products are available at

Soul Barrel Brewing
Restaurant in the Old Harbour
Best beer in Africa
Opened its doors in Hermanus
A small craft brewery based in the Cape Winelands has taken the top spot in the 2022 African Beer Cup, Africa’s biggest beer competition. Soul Barrel Brewing took the coveted title of Best Beer in Africa with their Live Culture Grand Cru, which beat 250 entries from 14 different African countries. Live Culture Grand Cru is a barrel-aged farmhouse ale fermented with wild yeast native to the Simondium-based brewery. It was brewed with barley from Caledon alongside citrus fynbos and hops grown in Soul Barrel’s beer garden. This was the third year of the competition and the first time that international judges were invited to join. Judges from 16 different countries evaluated the 251 entries. The judges awarded 10 gold medals, 29 silver medals and 27 bronze medals across 32 categories. The ten gold medallists then went head-to-head in the Best of Show round to determine the Best Beer in Africa. Rather than a trophy, the winner receives a custom painting to celebrate their win. This year’s painting was created by Cape Town artist Ann Gadd. The competition also includes a special award which goes to a brewery showcasing traditional African ingredients in a beer. The BASA African Celebration Award, sponsored by the Beer Association of South Africa, was awarded to Botswana’s Okavango Craft Brewery for their Old Bull Stout, which uses locally grown millet alongside malted barley. The brewery is spearheading a programme that supports local farmers and buys surplus millet, which is then malted at the brewery and used across their beer range.
Marine Hotel
Food & wine dinner calendar The Marine Hotel in Hermanus will be joining forces with some of the Overberg’s most lauded wine estates to offer a range of gourmet food and winner dinners this winter. The events will take place every month and will be co-hosted by the winemaker of each featured estate.
Abalone is quite difficult to find, even in Hermanus – not any more. A quaint little restaurant situated on the water’s edge of the Old Harbour in Hermanus, specialising in perlemoen dishes, opened its doors last month. Back in the day, one of the historic buildings in the Old Harbour, now home to Perlemoen was an abalone hatchery and thereafter housed the Hermanus Shore Angling Club. It took the owners, Jannie and Annabella Malherbe a few months to renovate and transform this rundown historic building into the cosy 30-seater restaurant it is today. “The old harbour was really in need of something to bring people back down into the beautiful historic harbour, and we hope combining something very Hermanus, like ‘Abalone” with the history - creating something unique and special. We are mostly focussed on seafood and especially abalone that we source live from an abalone farm in Hermanus. Our vision is to create something unique for our customers - an authentic South African experience,” says Jannie. Visit Perlemoen for a bite to eat, relax, and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views, while watching the whales frolicking in Walker Bay. Perlemoen is open on Tuesday - Sunday from 9:30 am - 4pm For more information contact 082 841 3547

Freshly baked sourdough
Melissa Burns, the General Manager of The Marine, says: “We are fortunate to be located in the heart of the Walker Bay area, and we are very excited to collaborate with our local wineries to showcase the top-quality wines of our region. We will be presenting these perfectly paired 5-course menus in our elegant restaurant, The Pavilion, providing diners with the opportunity to interact with the winemaker and our executive kitchen team.” On Saturday, 4 June 2022, Whalehaven wines will be showcased, along with the wines of Idiom, hosted by The Marine’s new Head Chef Oelof Verster and winemaker, Reino Thiart. This next gastronomic event at The Marine will be with Newton Johnson on 25 June; followed by Beaumont on 30 July; and Lomond wrapping the series up on 27 August.
No additives. No preservatives. No mess, but plenty of fuss. Truth Coffee’s resident baker Kelly Mukendi has committed to baking bread the hard way – and the results of this effort are fast becoming a city favourite. Kelly’s culinary journey began in 2018 as an apprentice to the Michelin star pastry chef Kamal Hamzoui, and with the guidance of artisan collaborators MF&Cie, Kelly has perfected the ancient fundamentals of the humble sourdough. The good news is, now you can try it for yourself at Truth’s Buitenkant Street bakery. David Donde, owner of Truth Coffee, is renowned for never settling for the bare minimum. Dedication, originality, and the pursuit of perfection are all non-negotiable, and when it comes to baking — the same applies. In fact, Kelly’s sourdough may very well be the best in the city centre. Finest land-based whale watching The Marine, a member of The Liz McGrath Collection, is one of South Africa’s most spectacular seaside hotels. Located on Hermanus’ famous cliff path, overlooking the breathtaking Walker Bay, the Small Luxury Hotels of the World property offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience the finest land-based whale watching in the world from June to November each year. Guests can even view these majestic creatures from the comfort of their own sea view room. The Overberg region is also a must for adventure sport seekers, offering a host of activities – including hiking, mountain biking and marine sports.
Master Baker Markus Farbinger once said that “Life is a special occasion. We bake for special occasions only.” At Truth, a ‘special occasion’ occurs once, twice, or even three times daily. This ensures that no loaf or sandwich will ever stand for longer than a couple of hours, promising peak freshness throughout the day. From culture to mother to dough to bread, a loaf of Kelly’s sourdough takes two days to make. Some bakeries choose to accelerate this fermentation process, but Truth believes that slow and steady equals high quality and guaranteed longevity: good bread is only good if it can last a few days. With all this to chew over, it’s no surprise that Truth regularly sells out of their breads daily. The baking begins at 6am, so stop by early to avoid disappointment.

The Secret In Napoleon Hill’s True Story
of the enchanted kettle revealed What does it take to be great; to really make it? Why do some succeed and others fail? This true story is about one important ingredient to being different. To making something work when others could not, or would not. Many years ago, an old country doctor drove to town, hitched his horse, quietly slipped into a drug store by the back door and began ‘dickering’ with the young drug clerk. For more than an hour, behind the prescription counter, the old doctor and the clerk talked in low tones. Then the doctor left. He went out to the buggy and brought back a large, old-fashioned kettle and a big wooden paddle (used for stirring the content of the kettle), and deposited them in the back of the store. The clerk inspected the kettle, reached into his inside pocket, took out a roll of bills and handed it over to the doctor. The roll contained exactly $500-the clerk’s entire savings! The doctor handed over a small slip of paper, on which there was written a secret formula. The words on that small slip of paper were worth a king’s ransom! But not to the doctor! Those magic words were needed to start the kettle boiling, but neither the doctor nor the young clerk knew what fabulous fortunes were destined to flow from that kettle. The old doctor was glad to sell the outfit for $500. The money would pay off his debts and give him freedom of mind. The clerk was taking a big chance by staking his entire life’s savings on a mere scrap of paper and an old kettle! He never dreamed his investment would start a kettle overflowing with gold that would surpass the miraculous performance of Aladdin’s lamp. What the clerk really purchased was an idea! The old kettle and the wooden paddle, and the secret message on a slip of paper, were incidental. The strange performance of that kettle began to take place after the new owner mixed with the secret instructions an ingredient of which the doctor knew nothing. The old kettle is now one of the world’s largest consumers of sugar, thus providing jobs of a permanent nature to thousands of men and women in growing sugar cane, and in refining and marketing sugar. The old kettle consumes, annually, millions of glass bottles, providing jobs to huge numbers of glass workers. The old kettle gives employment to an army of clerks, copywriters and advertising experts throughout the nation.
It has brought fame and fortune to scores of artists who have created magnificent pictures describing the product. The old kettle has converted a small southern city into the business capital of the South, which now benefits-directly or indirectly - every business, practically every resident of the city. The influence of this now benefits every civilized country in the world, pouring out a continuous stream of gold to all who touch it. Whoever you are, wherever you may live, whatever occupation you may be engaged in, just remember in the future, every time you see the words “Coca-Cola,” that its vast empire of wealth and influence grew out of a single idea, and that the mysterious ingredient the drug clerk-Asa Candler-mixed with the secret formula was … imagination! From the book, ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill Do you have the imagination it takes to become great? If you feel like you have forgotten how to dream, and you no longer remember using your imagination, may I suggest you work to bring back the person you were when you were willing to follow your intuition and thought nothing of dreaming. You are designed to dream and imagine. You are also meant to grow up and mature. Intuition, imagination, and dreaming are all part of who are meant to be. I challenge you to dig deep and become all you were created to be as a business owner on your road trip to freedom.
The Story of Shepiso Monamodi
The entrepreneur with just one sewing machine Entrepreneur and founder of Oratile Kids, Tshepiso Monamodi, started her soft leather shoe business with just one sewing machine – which she did not know how to operate. Today, she supplies soft leather shoes for toddlers to Clicks. Monamodi started the business in 2017 when she was looking for shoes for her son, leather soft ones that are very comfortable for babies, - the ones that don’t really interfere with the babies’ development when they learn how to walk. She could only find expensive ones. This is when she got the idea of maybe making a pair for her son, but the problem was that she could not sew at all. Monamodi realised that this is achievable, but she didn’t want to do what everyone else was doing. She wanted the shoes to be authentic. With just one sewing machine, she learnt how to make the shoes and took her shoes to a few local markets and malls, and she gained more customers. Monamodi says she has learnt a lot about her customers and what their babies’ needs truly are. “A couple of years later, it’s really picking up,” said Monamodi. Today, she supplies shoes to three Clicks Baby stores and has seen a 34% increase in sales since working with the retailer.

It’s easy to fall in love with Cyprus, especially with the 1st world lifestyle aspects. But it’s the excellent quality of life that is driving families in their droves to look seriously at Cyprus as their new home. The following 7 reasons have motivated their move:
1. Very friendly people: the Cypriots are warm, friendly and community
5. Weather – the best in The Med! you will quickly find yourself spending
orientated. Having an English-speaking culture (Cyprus is an ex-British colony) makes the integration far easier than many other European countries where there is often not only a language barrier, but a cultural one too.
more time outdoors as the weather is glorious: 320 days of sunshine a year and a short, mild winter!
2. Safety: Cyprus boasts one of the lowest crime rates in the world where you can enjoy living with no alarms, security gates or electric fences. There is absolutely no fear for your personal or material safety in Cyprus.
3. Health: because of the fantastic Mediterranean climate, you have a fabulous quality of life which benefits your health. There is also an in-expensive worldclass health system offering superior medical facilities & specialists.
4. Low cost of living: it is a lot cheaper to live in Cyprus than in South Africa
6. Fantastic food: fresh produce grown in Cyprus is delicious, inexpensive and in abundant supply at all the local supermarkets. It is seldom pre-packed, so you get to choose exactly what you want. Food tastes different in Cyprus because of the way it’s cultivated and prepared: in the traditional way!
7. Europe on your doorstep: Cyprus has 2 International Airports and several marinas, which means getting across to Europe is easy and inexpensive.
even with a volatile exchange rate. Monthly living costs are much less than those in South Africa.

Some of the practical aspects of living in Cyprus include: - access to Cyprus’ National Health Programme once you become a permanent resident – gone are the days that you need to pay hefty medical aid premiums! - a plethora of activities on offer: golf, sailing, bowls, social and service clubs (Rotary & Lions), tennis, hiking, camera clubs, art & cooking classes, church groups etc.; - the ease of getting around Cyprus: there is an excellent road and motorway network and a reliable and affordable public bus service. - a double-taxation treaty with South Africa: so there is no withholding tax when you bring your income across to Cyprus; - no inheritance tax: so on your death you can dispose of your assets to your loved ones without having to pay the Cypriot government any tax – this is advantageous for legacy planning. Making the move across to Cyprus is simpler than you think; and the generous exemption of import duties, excise duties and VAT to bring your personal effects to Cyprus for your relocation makes it easy on the wallet too. A new home in a new country is the achievement of a lifetime and an investment in the future for the next generation. In Cyprus the options really are the best. Living is laid back – you set your own pace. And what better place to do this than where the blue skies meet the Mediterranean Sea: on the beautiful island of Cyprus.

Artwork created by Pigcasso Located in the renowned Franschhoek Valley of the Western Cape, Farm Sanctuary SA serves to inspire a connection between farm animals and visitors. Driving the mission are founder Jo Lefson and resident rescued pig ‘Pigcasso’ who have been taking the art world by storm since releasing their definitive Abstract Expressionist artworks in 2017. Last year, Pigcasso made world news for creating an artwork worth more than R300 000. Pigcasso was rescued just before slaughter in 2016 by Joanne and taken to Farm Sanctuary SA. When Joanne noticed that Pigcasso ate or destroyed everything except some old paint brushes, she decided to nurture the pig’s potential talent. It didn’t take long before Pigcasso began to paint – and over time, the painting process developed into an extraordinary collaboration between human and pig. Lefson selects the colours, while Pigcasso takes the brush into her mouth and creates her magic across the canvas. Lefson watches from afar, able to stop Pigcasso if she observes an interesting form developing that is relatable to the human eye. Every original is signed by Pigcasso’s nose-tip, countersigned by Lefson and includes a Certificate of Authenticity. Proceeds from the sale of every artwork benefit the registered nonprofit Farm Sanctuary SA that Lefson established in 2016. From CNN to BBC Headline News, Pigcasso’s journey from rescued pig to celebrated international art sensation has captured the World’s imagination - with the duo’s artworks have been sold for millions of rands to art collectors around the World.
Pigcasso also designed the best-selling 2019 SWATCH watch - and most recently, Jo and Pigcasso have launched her own wine label, PIGCASSO BLACK. Visitors can meet Pigcasso and view the available artworks at the on-site OINK Gallery. For more information visit www.farmsanctuarysa.org

Winter’s wondrously earthy palette South Africa is fortunate to have a temperate climate with a relatively mild winter in comparison to the extremely hot summer months when temperatures and humidity soar. The cooler winter months make it a preferable time to go on safari and visit game parks and reserves. This is because wild animals tend to venture forth from the shaded shelter of trees and bushes during the daytime and come out into the open to forage, making them more visible and easier to spot. Winter is thus a time that many South Africans associate with being out in the wild, and being close to nature, where the expansiveness of the great outdoors is driven home. This is why Plascon’s 2022 Winter colour palette takes its cue from earthy, wide-open spaces, our verdant land with its fertile soil, and those dramatic skies and sunsets you only see when you’re away from the city. Plascon’s new winter “Grounded” palette features a bouquet of earth-inspired colours that bring our famed bushveld and savannah landscapes directly to mind. Deep khaki green and a rich reddish brown are the stronger colours of this down-to-earth collection. The rich and complex earthen Plascon Terra Nova (R6-D1-2) is matched in depth and saturation by the verdant green of Plascon Garden Seat (G1-E1-1). For gentle balance, Plascon has added a harmonious trio of natural yellows. From the warm white of Plascon Moon Beam (Y5-A2-3), to soft Pear Fantasy (Y5-B2-1), and golden Plascon Desert Daisy (Y3-B1-2), you use these natural hues together to bring a mood of grounded calm to your spaces.

Berg River Canoe Marathon The national canoeing community is responding to an appeal from the Paarl Canoe Club to support its growing development programme and to realise the dreams of fourteen paddlers to compete in the Berg River Canoe Marathon in July. The Paarl Club Development Programme with Oasis NPC uses canoeing as a tool to teach children from disadvantaged backgrounds the importance of discipline, hard work and determination. As part of a greater team, whilst still being an individual sport, paddlers learn the importance of applying their physical strength, mental agility, and endurance as they compete in races. The Paarl development programme currently has 30 young paddlers on the water every day. Having produced successful racers like Ryno Armdorf, Luke Stowman, Jermaine Pietersen and Niklas Tiras, the club, based at Market Street bridge in the centre of Paarl, has attracted a growing number of local youngsters to the club’s development arm run by Wayne August, with more than thirty eager paddlers taking to the water daily. “By coming down to the programme, the youngsters get to feel that they are part of a team, and paddling helps to keep them out of trouble. They learn discipline and how to support each other. If they learn to work hard at sport, they can apply that to their schoolwork as well,” said August. With stars like Stowman, Pietersen and Tiras getting national recognition, August says many of the younger paddler aspire to emulate them, starting off by striving to complete the tough 240 km Berg River Canoe Marathon from their hometown to the West Coast town of Velddrif. “It’s never easy. The challenge motivates me to keep going and do better. I am grateful to be able to compete and to have gotten my start at the development club,” he added.
Peter Pan flies again A special treat is in store for Capetonians, as the much-loved story of Peter Pan will be recreated on stage at the Canal Walk Winter Theatre taking place between 25 June - 17 July 2022. Audiences are also encouraged to dress up as part of the festivities. This is a great opportunity for budding pirates, fairies etc to get in on the act. Produced by Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer, expect appearances from a series of Never Land characters that include, mysterious mermaids from Mermaid Lagoon; the beautiful Princess Tiger Lilly and her brave, Panther; the high-spirited Lost Boys and Hook’s band of pirates aboard the Jolly Roger and of course, the crocodile, whose taste for time pieces (clocks and watches) is now legendary. Also joining the cast will be a gathering of life-sized puppets, who add yet another fun dimension to this spectacular performance. A talented, star-studded cast, together with breathtaking sets, magnificent costumes, and several dashing musical numbers, will bring Peter Pan to life. Ticket available via Webtickets
