After receiving The Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Award for Best Bakery in 2016, I spoke with The Newsy Neighbour staff to thank them for what they did for my small business – creating local awareness and increased traffic. It still sounds rehearsed, and I wish people could hear what I say about it – the emotion [ just] comes out. [It] was a heartfelt thank you because you had no idea what you did for me as a small business. It meant so much to me that so many people came in to check out My Bakery Shop and then vote for us! ~ My Bakery Shop, Langdon

A Note From The Team... There’s nothing quite like springtime on the Prairies. SongFinally: spring has sprung in the prairies! I know, I know, that’s almost exactly how we opened up our last issue an entire month ago. We may have jumped the gun a little bit there back at the beginning April, but now that we’re in May’s (mostly) balmy embrace, we figured it’s finally safe to officially, once-and-for-all declare the end of winter here in southern Alberta, and the beginning of another beautiful, colourful spring under those big, wideopen prairie skies. We’ve got a lot going on in this month at The Newsy Neighbour! First, welcome to our 4th Annual Restaurant Issue! We can’t wait to show you around some of our favourite spots to grab a bite, and are eager to highlight the culinary prowess of our local chefs and restauranteurs as we take you on a tour through the most mouth-watering businesses in our communities. Next, we’re hard at work getting everything lined up and ready for the 4th Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival, taking place in just over a month on Saturday, June 16th. This exciting event is one of the big highlights of the year here at the magazine, and we can’t wait to join you in Strathmore for a day full of fun, sun, and community spirit. Finally, we’re celebrating Mother’s Day this month at The Newsy Neighbour! Flip through these pages to find all sorts of fun stories about motherhood, gift ideas for the big day, and some heartfelt words about what our moms mean to us. Whew! Like we said, May’s a busy month here at the magazine. There’s lots on the go and plenty more on the horizon, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. As the weather warms up and spring melts into summer, we’re looking forward to seeing our friends and neighbours get outside, shed their winter coats, and experience everything our communities have to offer. Happy spring, southern Alberta – get out there and enjoy it!

Traditionally, Champagne has always a way to celebrate milestones or toast the bride and groom on their marriage. Considered to be a flexible beverage, Champagne can be served with a meal or with dessert. For many years, this truly refreshing and exotic drink has been used as a way of celebration and just enjoying. Champagne comes from the vineyards of the French region. If you get a bottle and notice Champagne imprinted on the label, you can rest assured that the bottle was produced in the vineyards of France. You should also make sure that the bottle is spelled “Champagne”, with a capital C. French manufacturers are very protective of this very name, and therefore are the only ones that are authorized to use it. Champagne is made using three different types of grape - Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. Noir and Meunier are types of black grapes, while the well-known Chardonnay is a type of white grape. The label on the bottle will signify what type of Champagne you are buying, so you’ll know what flavour to expect. There are also types of this wine that are a blend of different grapes, providing quite an exquisite taste, to say the least. Much like sparkling wine, Champagne is very common with celebrations. Although it is actually considered to be a type of sparkling wine, Champagne is much better. If you have ever tasted this wine before - you’ll know first hand what quality tastes like. A lot of people prefer Champagne because of the bubbles that are known to spew forth once a bottle has been uncorked. The bubbles that spew from this wine are the result of tiny drops of liquid that are disturbed by the carbonic acid gas. Once the liquid is disturbed, the bubbles form and shoot out of the bottle. This is a natural reaction of the double fermentation process that can only be found with a bottle of Champagne. The next time you have a celebration and need something to make the celebration a bit more interesting, you should grab a bottle of Champagne. Few things compliment a celebration like the bursting bubbles of a fine bottle. Even though it may cost you a bit of money, when you pop the top, you’ll be glad you bought it.

CHEESY STUFFED POBLANO PEPPERS WITH GROUND TURKEY I love stuffed peppers. I have made them for years using yellow, orange, red and green peppers. I always used cooked rice and ground beef with some Italian seasoning and would bake them smothered in tomato juice. Now, I have found a wonderful new variation using Poblano peppers and it is very yummy! Poblano peppers are very healthy for you. I do not find them spicy, but delicious, and they can help fight cancer and boost your immune system.

They are just hot enough to contain the cancer-fighting power of capsaicin without burning your mouth and contains antioxidants that are guaranteed to make your body happy. This is relevant because capsaicin is one of those plant-based substances researchers have been seriously testing for years in connection with potential cancer treatments. Capsaicin has been researched on both humans and animals for prostate, gastric, breast, primary effusion lymphoma and lung cancer. Seriously, next time you see poblano peppers at the market, give them a chance. You are going to love this recipe – I do!!

If you microwave the peppers in the microwave for just a couple of minutes, it will soften them, making it easier for stuffing. Then I added the spaghetti sauce – I suppose you could use any type of sauce that you prefer, including taco sauce (if you like spicy), marinara, vodka cream sauce or just chopped tomatoes. I stuffed the peppers and covered them in mozzarella cheese, but again you could use any type of cheese you prefer. Pepper Jack, Monterey, cheddar, provolone, etc.

Fisk, Denmark
Domed with an illustration of a serious Scandinavian fisherman, Fisk is a strong Danish liqueur that will clear your senses better than your favourite cold medication. The base of Fisk is high-quality vodka, which is then blended with a mix of eucalyptus, menthol and black licorice to produce an invigorating 30% alcohol beverage Fisk is best served as an ice-cold shot, although its more passionate fans enjoy sipping it at room temperature.

Eight Exoic Alcooic Drinks om Around he Wld Even if a voyage to Peru or an adventure in Scandinavia isn’t in your immediate future, you can still experience the unique flavors of eight different countries around the world. Every nation produces its own unique alcohol-
ic beverages that are inspired by local ingredients and historic production methods. With ingredients as diverse as rye bread, eucalyptus and sweet potato, these eight alcoholic drinks will bring a new spirit of exoticism to your liquor cabinet.
Chartreuse, Franc
Which came first... the colour or the French liqueur? As it turns out, Chartreuse, the herbaceous liqueur produced exclusively by French monks came into production almost 150 years before people started using its name to refer to shade of yellowish green. Although the monks recently moved production of the liqueur a distillery near Grenoble, the brothers still provide the unique combination of 130 herbs that gives this liqueur its distinctive grassy flavour.

Winter in Canada brings sub-zero temperatures, mind-blowing blizzards and the ideal conditions for producing sweet, syrupy ice wine. Ice wine is made from grapes while they're still on the vine. Because the water grape freezes first, vintners can squeeze the out extract more concentrated (and therefore sweeter) grape juice. Canadian vineyards produce red, white, rosé and evening sparkling ice wines.
Kvass, Russia
A popular drink across Russia and the rest of the former Soviet Union, kvass is a lightly-alcoholic sparkling beverage made from fermented rye bread. Because it usually contains less than 1% alcohol, kvass is often served to children as well as adults. If you are traveling in Eastern Europe, be on the lookout for women selling fresh kvass from large barrels on the side of the road: you can purchase a bottle to take home or enjoy a glass for as little as ten cents.
Spain
Spain may be best known for its rich red wines, but that in its liqueurs should be overlooked. One of the most popular liqueurs in Spain is the golden-hued Licorice is made from a secret blend of fruit juices and herbs, which are then combined with vanilla, it is delicious when poured into iced coffee, mixed with cold milk or shaken with orange juice.
Pisco, Peru
Pisco is essentially Peruvian brandy, with an alcohol content of 3848%. It is made from grapes grown in vineyards along Peru's Pacific Coast. Pisco has worn international awards for its sweet and light aftertaste Peru's most famous cocktail, the Pisco Sour, is made from pisco, lime ice, simple syrup, frothy egg whites and ice.
Pulque, Mexico
Not for the faint of heart, Mexican Pulque is made from the sap of the agave plant. It is fermented for up to two weeks using a bacterium instead of yeast. Pulque is often a rural drink, with local families closely guarding their production techniques and selling their homemade Pulque from stalls in front of their homes. The finished product is bright white, somewhat gooey and quite sour.
Shochu, Japan
Everybody knows about Korean soju and Japanese sake, but fewer have tried Japanese Shochu. Shochu can be distilled from all kinds of traditional Japanese ingredients including barley, rice buckwheat and even sweet potatoes. The finished product is a 25% alcohol and has a distinctly earthy flavour. Shochu is enjoyed neat, on the rocks with hot water or even mixed with oolong tea. Most of these alcoholic beverages can be found at well stocked liquor store, though you may need to speak to a specialist importer if you're having trouble finding them locally. If you absolutely can't find one of these drinks in your home country, you’ll just have to book a flight. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

first issue that Aleesha and Kathryn published way back in April 2008, it hardly even seems like the same magazine as the one you’re holding in your hands (or reading online) today! We were so proud to have pulled together all the content that we did to put out that special Issue #1– but writing, publishing, and distributing a magazine was brand-new to all of us back then, and it sure showed. Between all the work required to get those first copies out to the communities and accidentally going with the American-styled spelling of “Neighbor” on the front cover, we had some learning to do – but over the months and years to come, the magazine grew and evolved into something amazing. Moving forward from our first issue, we made a commitment to ourselves to make each issue better than the last – and little by little, month by month, The Newsy Neighbour took on a life of its own. There were so many milestones that we look back on and are proud to celebrate – our first Readers’ Choice Best in Business Awards, the inaugural Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival – but one of the biggest turning points for the magazine was when Denise came onboard to help out.
10 YEARS
Our first introduction to Denise was through a fiery letter-to-the-editor that basically picked apart, page-by-page, everything that was wrong with that month’s issue. It was tough to hear, but a lot of what she said made sense, and so we seized the opportunity to recruit Denise to be a part of the team, and haven’t looked back since. From there, our small and dedicated crew of Newsy Neighbours has seen people come and go, but our goal has always been the same: to bring people together, and to celebrate that which makes life in our communities so very special and unique.
A Decade of Bringing Neighbours Together
And really, when we look back at these past ten years, that’s what we’re most proud of. Sure, it’s always nice to see an increase in distribution numbers, or a boost in ad sales – but truly, the most rewarding part of these past ten years has been watching the growth of our enthusiastic community of readers and business owners who have formed around the magazine and its associated events. Getting to chat with folks about this issue or that article and what it means to them is truly incredible, and hearing how an editorial or event has had a positive effect on someone’s life is such a profound experience that it’s honestly difficult to put it into words.
Celebrating of The Newsy Neighbour
We don’t really break The Newsy Neighbour up into annual volumes, but if we did, we’d be in the midst of a pretty special one right now. We’re currently in our tenth year of business, and can’t believe how far we’ve come since we first cooked up the idea of a community-minded magazine all those years ago. Looking at that 16 •
thenewsyneighbour.com
We started this magazine ten years ago because we saw that there was an incredible heart and spirit in the neighbours all around us. We wanted to create a platform that would bring our communities together to celebrate each other’s accomplishments, connect people and local businesses to one another, and shine a spotlight on the incredible things taking place right in our own hometown streets. The enthusiasm with which people gathered around the spark that we had created was surprising, and altogether humbling. Through all the ups and downs of owning and running a business like The Newsy Neighbour, it’s The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

been that community – our readers – that always encourages us to keep being better, and to keep aiming higher. We’re proud of how far this magazine’s come over the past ten years, but even more than that, we’re proud of the people we’ve met, the folks we’ve brought together, and the bright, glowing, enthusiastic spirit that’s at the heart of our prairie community. Thanks for an amazing ten years, Newsy Neighbours – we couldn’t have done it without you!

The 4th Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival Getting to Know the Festival This summer marks the fourth time that The Newsy Neighbour will be taking over downtown Strathmore to host the annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival! Over the past several years, we’ve gotten pretty good at bringing the party, and have taken pride in creating an event that has something for everyone. If you’ve yet to attend the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival, we strongly encourage you to make your way to central Strathmore and be a part of things on Saturday, June 16. No matter your age or walk of life, we’re proud to welcome you out to the festival to explore everything Strathmore and our communities have to offer, and to get to know your neighbours! Still not convinced? Read on, and learn a little bit more about what we’ve got in store this year.
Business Owners: Show Us Your Stuff! One of the most important puzzle pieces when putting together
the festival each year is our community of movers, shakers, and business owners. As entrepreneurs ourselves, it makes our hearts swell with pride every time we see 2nd and 3rd Avenues lined up and down with our best and brightest local businesses. The Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival offers the unique opportunity for business owners to come together in the spirit of community and share their talents, services, and products with our prairie “neighbourhood” at large. Everyone from the biggest retailers to the smallest vendors and service providers comes out to show us what they’ve got, and the feedback we’ve received over the years has been incredible. For our society of local entrepreneurs, the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival is an annual highlight, and accounts for much of the growth and networking that many of our independent small businesses see throughout the year. Take advantage of the fact that the streets will be filled to bursting with potential customers during this special Saturday in June, and register your business for the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival today!
Kids: Come Out and Play! Oftentimes, with locally-based festivals like these, there’s not a lot for kids to do. Sure, there might be the odd beanbag toss or hotdog stand, but generally, these sorts of community events often revolve around a cooler full of beer, a bit of fundraising, and neighbourhood gossip. Boooooooring. Here at The Newsy Neighbour, we understand the importance of family, with many of us currently raising children of our own. That’s why we always make sure the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival is chock-full of fun activities that your kids will actually enjoy checking out! We don’t want to spoil everything that’ll be taking place this year, but suffice it to say that it’ll be bigger and better than last year, which featured such kid-friendly classics as face painting, bouncy castles, monster bubbles, sidewalk chalk challenges, box forts, delicious treats and goodies, and much, much more. So, cancel that sitter and bring the whole family out

The Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival has something for everyone, but at its core, it’s about bringing people together to relax, unwind, and let their guard down long enough to connect with one another and get to know each other just a little bit better. To make that happen, we’re swinging for the fences this year. We’ll be taking over Kinsmen Park once again to bring you a huge, outdoor beer garden that provides the perfect place to kick back, crack open a cold one, and start a conversation with someone new. Our allday-long music event will also be returning this year, keeping the festival bumping late into the evening. Finally, some of the tastiest, most delicious food on four wheels can be found at our food truck gathering, also making a comeback after a triumphant debut last year. Whether you’re looking for good times, good eats, or good company, we’ve got you covered at the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival!
Come Have Fun, and Get to Know Your Neighbour Whatever you might normally find yourself doing on a sunny day in June, we suggest you put it off until the following weekend, and come join us in downtown Strathmore on Saturday the 16th. The Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival is something we take immense amounts of pride in, and an event that we try to make bigger and better with each passing year. Our 2017 festival was a show-stopper, so we’ve got our work cut out for us this summer – but we think you’ll be pretty excited with what we’re putting together. So, spread the word, and join us on June 16th for the 4th Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival –come explore everything that our communities have to offer, and maybe get to know a few new folks while you’re at it!

A little bit of everything For the past 12 years and along with her husband, two sons and menagerie of pets, Gaylene has been calling Strathmore home. Gaylene suffers annual bouts of spring fever, which she treats with seed catalogues, flip flops in the snow and the occasional gopher killing road trip.
Siri, Call Me Sassenach!
I know I have mentioned it before, but our house tends to be heavy on the testosterone and a little lacking in estrogen (and this has nothing to do with my age, by the way!) Now
this usually isn’t too bad for me, the lonely xx chromosome of the house because five days a week I’d go to the office and discuss things outside of Minecraft, swords, farts, burps, and how you can turn a PVC pipe into a weapon. It provided a nice balance to my life. From 8:30 to 4:30 we girls could eloquently converse on the beauty that is Jamie Fraser knees (Oh, for a man in a kilt whispering Sassenach) or debate epidural vs natural (with regards to Brazilian waxing) and generally giggle over things not suitable for conversation around the weaker sex – i.e. the guys. (Any gentlemen wishing to argue about the weaker sex comment go get a Brazilian and then get back to me.) However, I no longer have an office to go to. I’m working from home. My coworkers are a 15-year-old

barks a lot more than I ever knew and an SPCA special that seems to sneak off when I’m not looking to go sleep on the bed. You see, I’ve started a new gig, and headquarters is a desk between the dining room and the living room. And let me say, you will never hear me complain about having a seven-second commute; I love it. And wearing yoga pants and going barefoot to the office – it’s about as sweet a deal that I could ever imagine. The part that I’m having trouble adjusting to is there are entire days from when the boys leave for school to when they get back that I do not speak to another human being (arguing with Dr. Phil’s guest don’t count, by-the-way!). Now, I’m an introvert by nature. I have been known to stay indoors when it’s too peopley outside. Call the house – won’t be me that answers the phone. I admit to ducking and covering with more stealth than a ninja down Wal-Mart isles to avoid bumping into people when I am in a big I –introvert mood. I think a cabin in the woods with no neighbours nearby sounds this side of heaven. My idea of a perfect island destination is not a palm tree and tourists scattered strip of beach under a tropical sun, but the vast emptiness that is Elsmere under a midnight sun. (Honestly, book me a flight, pack the industrial bug spray and thermals and I’m good to go.) But this – this is going cold turkey. Usually, I had people to bounce ideas off. Someone would pop in and remind me to have lunch. Clients would come in, I’d have a conversation, we would discuss important matters in the world like what happened on the last episode of Outlander. You see, I do like people, just the right amount of people. It’s like candy; if you have too much, it loses what makes it special. I’m kind of like the Goldilocks of people, if you will. Not too many, not too few, just the right amount. Right now, I might be in a too-few situation. Now, I find myself talking to Siri (that I have programmed to be a male voice with a Scottish brogue) and asking my cat, “so what do you think? Should we include a timeline or an infographic on this slide?” – she tends to go for infographics. Yep, I would have to say that my new gig is 80% awesome sauce and 20% Goldilocks lonely. It’s like everything in life. Nothing is perfect. Sometimes dinner conversations are about what bugs are the best source of protein and what size PVC pipe you need to make a blowgun capable of bringing down a zombie. Sometimes, you find a dog sleeping on your pillow and a cat curled up on your keyboard. Sometimes you miss having coworkers and sometimes it’s just nice to be able to sing to Madonna loud and off-key and without people laughing at your cover of Like a Virgin. THE UNHAPPY UNION OF HUMAN MULTITASKING AND PRODUCTIVITY After 50 years, things need to change. It is difficult to admit a mistake occurred. The merits of the relationship are touted in some circles augmented by an unwillingness to accept evidence things didn't work like we thought they would. Too much time was wasted. This was evident in the stress and the frustration. Despite believing people at their best are great at multitasking, productivity suffers. Further, concerns regarding potential physical and mental impacts resulting from multitasking are on the rise. At the same time, the computer's ability to complete multiple functions is rapidly rising.
Understanding the Origin of Multitasking The word multitasking originated in the computer realm. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first citation of the word is from 1966, in a magazine called Datamation. “Multi-tasking is defined as the use of a single CPU for the simultaneous processing of two or more jobs.” The current usage of multitasking, as it pertains to humans, morphed from this computing term. According to the neuroscientist, Dr. Gabija Toleikyte, rather than simultaneously processing two or more jobs, the human brain actually switches from one task to another really fast. A better term for the process might be serial-tasking.

When we are constantly shifting attention from one activity to another, the brain attention systems find it harder to focus, impacting productivity. New studies show it kills performance and may even damage the brain. Multitasking reduces efficiency and performance because your brain can only focus on one thing at a time. When you try to do two things at once, the brain lacks the capacity to perform both tasks successfully.

Dr. Travis Bradbury, an expert in Emotional Intelligence, recently shared that "a study at the University of London found participants who multitasked during cognitive tasks experienced IQ score declines similar to what is expected if they had smoked marijuana or stayed up all night. create an awareness that the way we are interacting with the devices might be changing the way we think and these changes might be occurring at the level of brain structure.”
Possibilities It is interesting to consider how our love affair with technology may lead to changes in human physiology. Accordingly, it is not only important but necessary to stop and evaluate our understanding of multitasking. Taking this approach provides an opportunity to reframe and create better outcomes. Knowledge brings awareness. When we know better, we can choose to do better. A lack of satisfaction and motivation in the workplace costs employers billions in lost productivity. Might a change of focus bring about better results?
Tips and tricks to keep your car looking new this spring The colder weather is fleeting, flowers are blossoming and the grass is just a little greener, which means spring is finally here. While most of your time will be spent preparing your home, clothes and family calendars for the warmer weather, it's important not to forget about your car. In fact, you can celebrate springtime by spending some time enjoying the fresh outdoor air and showing your car some love ahead of upcoming family vacations and summer road trips with friends. Start with these smart and simple tips to improve your ride:
Freshen up the interior Interior and exterior cleaning makes a big difference in keeping a car looking and driving its best, but that doesn't solve odor issues. To finalize spring car prep and maintenance, make sure to use a product that will leave the car smelling as good as it looks. Innovative and discrete vent sticks and mini diffusers from Refresh Your Car! Come in a wide variety of scents, like Lemon Lime Sunshine, and are an affordable, long-lasting way to keep a car smelling great!
Clean and protect your interior The interior, especially leather, is the most used and abused part of a car. Over time, constant use and sun damage can result in you leather interior drying out, causing it to fade, crack and rip. A quick and trusted way to address this issue is to use Leather Cleaner & Conditioner. The easy two-step process will help clean, restore and protect a car's interior, keeping it looking and feeling like new.

The colder the weather, the harder a battery and charging system need to work in a car. Start by making sure the battery is mounted correctly and the connections are free from corrosion. Also, consider replacing the battery if it's older than five years, which will ensure you don't get stranded out on the road.
Check and replace basic car items Before heading out on any lengthy adventures, make sure the car is up-to-date on oil changes. During the oil change a technician should also check and replenish other fluids like the brake, transmission, windshield wiper and power steering fluids, as well as your coolant. This often forgotten about maintenance will help a car run smoothly for months to come.
Wash and wax No matter the season, a car that is driven daily is constantly battling the elements, which can cause damage to its exterior. Washing regularly and waxing at least twice a year is an easy way to keep a car looking its best, protecting it from damaging UV rays, road debris, tree sap and rusting. When washing and protecting, don't forget about tires and wheels. All Wheel & Tire Cleaner is an affordable, easy-to-use spray that clings to the dirt on the surface of most wheels and tires, easily removing brake dust, grime and grease; giving your wheels and tires a spotless, professional look. These simple tips can keep a car clean, fresh and running smoothly throughout the hectic summer driving season. Resource: www.brandpointcontent.com

Easy projects to turn tash into teasure
Crafting is a great way to relieve stress and express your creative side - and fortunately, you don't have to be a master craftsman - or spend a fortune on materials - to have fun and enjoy the benefits. "A great way to get into crafting is by 'upcycling' - bringing new life into items you already have," said Dinah Wulf, author and blogger of the website DIY Inspired. "Some of my favorite projects can be done with ordinary household items and just a dab of glue." Here are four easy "upcycled" projects to get your creative juices flowing.

A cork cell phone stand? Wine-not?!
Wine corks make excellent crafting material, so instead of throwing the cork away once the bottle is empty, put them to use by creating a stand for your smartphone. All that's needed for this cute project is 24 corks and a sturdy, quick-drying glue like DAP RapidFuse All Purpose Adhesive. Start by stacking the corks in a pyramid shape, applying just a thin layer of the glue to where the corks meet. Press each bond together for 30 seconds to ensure a strong hold. Next, just add one extra row of corks at the bottom for the phone to rest on, and repeat with the adhesive. Allow to cure for 30 minutes. In less than five minutes, you've created a unique resting place for your phone that keeps it handy while you work at your desk or look up recipes in the kitchen.

A dazzling jewelry box for hidden treasures
Grad & Wedding Season is FAST
For an easy, budget-friendly crafting project, Dinah recommends scouring flea markets and garage sales for old ceramic boxes. With a little dressing up, they make the perfect jewelry box for you or a young one. Start by spray-painting the box in your desired color. Once dry, embellish with rhinestones or old figurines - even old decorative salt or pepper shakers. Simply dab a bit of adhesive on the item, then press into the box for 30 seconds to seal. It's the perfect gift for the little princess in your life.
A bird feeder to tweet about
Approaching!
One of Dinah's favorite projects is creating an eye-catching bird feeder made from an old saucer and teacup. It's a great way to repurpose old dishes that you no longer use, while also bringing some whimsy to the backyard. Simply lay the cup on its side on top of the saucer, and check to see where the cup and saucer touch. Next, apply the adhesive to these two areas to set and press together for 30 seconds. To keep the cup from rolling as it sets, place two small items on either side. After it cures for 30 minutes, it will be ready to fill with bird seed and hang. Beyond crafting for fun, use your new-found crafting skills to repair other household items such as flower pots and picture frames. Your first instinct may be to trash the pieces and shop for replacements, but by vowing to repair your items instead of replacing, you can save significant amounts of money, as well as hang on to irreplaceable heirlooms and items with sentimental value. Your energy levels ebb and flow like waves and at some points you are going to be high in energy and at other points you are going to be low in energy. This is set partly by your internal body clock (internal pacemaker) and partly by external cues (external zeitgebers) such as social cues, eating habits and light. In the morning when you wake up, your body is flooded with cortisol and this helps you to start shifting into first gear. Your energy then remains fairly steady until lunch, when you replenish your glucose stores and then again at 4pm at which point you will reach a low point in your natural energy cycle. 4pm is when many of us start feeling sleepy and wanting to curl up on the couch. We also feel more tired straight after food while we’re digesting, so if you eat lunch at 3.30pm, you may as well write 4pm off completely.

stay productive and to get the most out of yourself. For instance, if you have flexible working hours (or a reasonable boss), consider speaking with them and asking if you can move your working day forward one hour. Get into work at 8 when your energy will be on the rise and then leave at 4pm when you’ll be starting to struggle focusing. You can then let your energy continue to sink as you relax for the evening. Another tip is to avoid having big plans after dinner. If you have anything productive to do, then do it before you eat. The minute you eat dinner and sit on the couch, your energy will be in decline and you should consider the productive part of the day over. This also applies on a larger scale. Specifically, you will find that you also have months where you are more productive facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

and months where you are less so. This is particularly true when it comes to exercise – you can have months of being highly disciplined and training well and then often find they’re followed by months of not having the energy. Don’t punish yourself for this, just go with your body’s natural inclination and try to plan tasks for the points in time when you are most likely to be able to focus on and complete them.
Individual Differences and How to Control Your Cycles We’ve looked at the times you’re most likely to be productive or sleepy during the day and for most people this should ring true. Do keep in mind though that everyone is different. Some people are night owls and actually are more productive later at night, while other people are ‘early birds’ and will tend to get their best work done first thing in the morning when the rest of us are still groggy and experiencing sleep inertia. Try to learn your own individual rhythms and work with those. At the same time, remember as well that you can actually control your rhythms in order to help your energy cycles sync up with what you’re doing at any given time. The daylight lamp we mentioned earlier is one and another is to time when you eat carefully. Not only can changing your eating schedule help you move that after-dinner slump, it also actually affects your body clock. Eat dinner later and you’ll find it a little easier to sleep later. Daytime naps can also help with this.

CONCLUSIONS & RECAP OF ENTIRE 4 ISSUE LIMITLESS ENERGY LESSON Throughout the course of this book we’ve covered a lot of different points and right now your mind might be swimming with ideas for how to get more energy and how to change your routine for the better. To help you cement all these ideas then, let’s quickly recap on some of the tools and strategies you can now be using to get more energy:
• Start Eating More Healthily
o Avoid processed foods o Avoid simple carbohydrates o Eat nutrient dense foods o Eat smaller meals, more regularly o Eat complex carbs that release energy more slowly o Don’t get too carried away with fad diets o Prepare meals in advance o Supplement if necessary
• Exercise More
o Use HIIT training to increase mitochondria o Don’t over train
• Manage Your Sleep
o Have half an hour to relax in the evenings o Take a hot shower before bed o Sleep with the window ajar o Invest in comfortable bedclothes and pajamas
• Wake Up Slowly o Use a daylight alarm o And sleep tracker 30 •

o Tempt yourself out of bed with something interesting o Take a cold shower! o Cycle or jog to work if you can
• Plan Your Day To Coincide With Your Natural Energy Highs And Lows
o Ask if you can start an hour earlier and finish at four o Don’t plan anything for after dinner – do productive things first o Time meals to adjust your body clock o Learn what works for you! All of this might sound like quite a lot and especially if you’re feeling low on energy. If you’re exhausted right now, then can you really be bothered to take up a new exercise regime? To cycle to work? To change your whole routine? To cook fresh meals? This might sound like a lot and it might sound daunting but that’s why it can pay to keep in mind the principle of Kaizen. Kaizen means making small, incremental changes that all add up into something big and profound. For instance then, try swapping your morning coffee for a smoothie and feel how much more energy you get from nutrients versus caffeine. It’s a very small change but it makes a huge difference. If you can’t commit to half an hour of chilling in the evening, try making it ten minutes. And if working out is too daunting, commit just to half an hour a week to begin with.
These small changes might not seem like much but just a little bit of extra energy can go a long way and ultimately will lead to a domino effect. By the end you’ll feel brighter, you’ll look healthier, you’ll be happier, you’ll work better… And it all starts with just one. Small. Change…

THIS FIRST MONTH YOU WILL LEARN... Chapter 1: You Can Control How Fast (or Slowly) You Age No one wants to get older but unfortunately, until they discover an elixir of youth, it’s fairly unavoidable. But just because you have to get older, no one said you had to do it quick-ly. And no one said you couldn’t age well and keep your youthful good looks, energy and health! Many of us make the assumption that getting old automatically has to mean getting covered in wrinkles, losing our ability to walk around and eventually developing incontinence and dementia. As it happens though, none of the-se things are inevitable and most of them are only partially related to age! And you can see this too just by looking around! While some people seem to be struggling to stand up straight and remember their name at age 65, others are still playing sports and writing books well into their 80s and 90s. Is the difference entirely genetic? Not at all! In fact, there are numerous lifestyle changes that can make all the difference to the way you feel as you age and many of the problems that are associated with old-age can actual-ly be avoided entirely. So yeah, Aging is still inevitable. But the way you age is almost entirely up to you! The difference comes down to your knowledge and your ability to apply that knowledge to make the most of your own body and health. YOU have the choice and the sooner you take action, the more effectively you can stave off the most unappealing aspects of getting older. Yes, that’s right, this isn’t just a book for ‘old people’. It’s for young people too. In fact, it’s more aimed at young people because you are the ones who have the time to ensure you get the very most out of your body and mind as you get older.
But How Do You Slow Aging?
Anyone can claim that Aging is something you have control over. The hard part is backing that claim up with some hard evidence. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

How can you really slow down your Aging? And how can your decisions end up putting your body in ‘fast forward’ mode? Here are some examples…
Mobility
A lot of people will tell you that your knees have a finite amount of time be-fore they start to tire out. The same goes for your back. But more and more, we’re discovering that’s not true. The ‘functional strength’ crowd are making it very apparent that you can keep on training into old age and that in fact, things like running should give you more lon-gevity. The problem is just the way we’re training. And our lack of activity general-ly. The way it goes for many people is that they stay very fit and healthy when they’re younger because they run around, play sports and generally en-gage in activity. Once they’re middle aged though, they slow down and they start sitting at the computer all day long. Their metabolism slows down yes but most of the changes they see in their body are really a result of being constantly stressed and constantly static. This results in muscle imbalances caused by maintaining the same posture for so long and it results in injury when they do get active. Don’t use your back long enough and it’s sure to go when you try and lift that suitcase! This injury then leads to ‘corrective’ posture and biomechanics. You have a bad knee or back, so you put more weight on the other leg/you hunch over. This in turn means that you actually exacerbate the muscle imbalances that you already had. And the longer this goes on, the more of a hunch and a limp you can start to acquire and the more pain you can expect to experi-ence. The solution is not to be less active but to be more active – while making sure to use the correct technique.
Energy
Meanwhile, staying active can also boost your energy levels and help you to start feeling better. That means the tiredness and sluggishness that we feel as we get older again isn’t inevitable. Actually, when you combine the right exercise regime with the right diet, you can increase not only your heart strength and circulation but also the efficiency of your mitochondria. Mitochondria are the small ‘energy facto-ries’ of your cells. They exist to help you convert glucose into useable en-ergy (ATP) and their number and strength is one of the big determining fac-tors that influences your energy output and the way you feel. In fact, differences in mitochondria have been suggested to be one of the main differentiating factors between the energy levels of young children and those of older individuals. It’s why kids seem to be able to run around and around in circles for hours screaming, without ever tiring out.
Nutrition
Nutrition is also responsible for a large proportion of the problems you’ll struggle with as you get older. Contrary to popular belief, many of the health issues associated with old age are actually cumulative and result from years of poor nutrition. A lack of nutrients can lead to problems with vision, problems with hormone production, problems with bone density and much more. Thus by eating the right diet, you can stave off numerous con-ditions and stay healthier and stronger into older age.

Brain
The same rules apply to your brain as to the rest of your body. In other words, if you keep your nutrition up and actually keep using your brain it will stay nimble. *** We’ll get into all of this and a lot more in greater detail in the subsequent chapters but hopefully this is enough of an explanation to make a believer of you. The point is, you do have control over the way you age and if you take the right precautions then you can stay healthy, mobile and able well into older age. This book is going to act as your road map and your blueprint to help you do exactly that. Follow these tips and you’ll be able to fortify your body against the invading forces of old age!
Toxins, Cell Damage and Heart Problems
Many of the health complaints associated with old age can also be com-bated with the right lifestyle. Sure, it’s always possible to be unlucky and to suffer from cancer with no ‘cause’ as such. But this facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Chapter 2: Fine Tuning Your Mental Clarity on a Daily Basis So where to start? How about with the mind, seeing as the mind leads and the body follows. If you can keep your brain sharp and your mind nimble, then you will be able to enjoy life in at least some capacity and maintain your dignity. What’s more though, is that a healthy mind will help to auto-matically give you a stronger and healthier body. Your mind controls your movements after all and this is the key to maintaining good biomechanics and muscle control. So let’s take a look at the issues that you might struggle with in this de-partment as you age and how you can keep those problems at bay...
Cognitive Decline With Old Age
The thing we most often associate with age-related cognitive decline is for-getfulness. When you reach a certain age, you start to forget where you left your keys a little more regularly and eventually you start to forget the names of your family. Just call everyone ‘Frank’, it’s easier. Some degree of memory loss is fairly normal with age and is referred to as ‘age related cognitive decline’. However, in some cases it might take the more serious form of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. The latter is caused by amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, which are caused by a build-up of protein fragments attaching to the cells. This can lead to confusion and severe memory loss, which we know as dementia or Alzheimer’s. In some cases, confusion and memory loss are exacerbated by damage to the brain caused by a stroke or traumatic brain injury. But long before that, comes the slight tiredness and the brain fog. It’s al-most imperceptible but it’s definitely there. Like a computer that takes just an extra minute or two to boot up. No one else would notice, but you know it’s not running on all cylinders anymore. Not like it used to. Think back: how much harder is it to wake up in the morning than it was five years ago? Back then you would likely be out all night drinking with friends and then wake up the next day with energy to spare. It’s not your body that’s changed at this point: it’s your brain… Or how about you think back even further (memory allowing…) to when you were just a little kid. Back then you could run around in circles for hours without ever tiring out. Likely you know kids who can still do the same thing. These days though,

many of us struggle just climbing the stairs! Constantly feeling tired is no fun and neither is having half the enthusiasm you used to have when you were younger – or the ability or the passion for learning. Notice how young people are always learning new skills, making new friends and changing careers and that gets harder as you age. Oh and what about mood? Have you noticed how you’re just much angrier all the time these days? What once wouldn’t have caused us pause for thought now has us growling under our breaths like mad people. What happened to that youthful optimism? If you understand the ‘law of attrac-tion’ then you’ll know how being angry all the time will only lead to fewer opportunities and less enjoyment. Apparently it’s at the age of 60 when these changes really occur. So what’s actually happening inside that cranium of yours to cause all this change?
Increasing Brain Energy and Mood With Nutrition and Nootropics
There are many things that change in the brain and that are re-
sponsible for the changes we see in our abilities and our personalities. Many of these can be somewhat mitigated by the right nutrient and/or supplement regime however and when nutrients, herbs or medications are used in this way they’re referred to as ‘nootropics’ – compounds that can help to enhance brain performance. Let’s start with that low energy – what causes this? There are a couple of things, but up front is the decrease in miThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

tochondria. As we’ve already discussed, your mitochondria are the tiny little fuel gener-ators that live in all of your cells. Their job is to take glucose and to convert it to ATP, or Adenosine Triphosphate, the ‘energy currency of life’. These mitochondria are found throughout our bodies and that includes the brain, where they live in the brain cells. If you’ve ever felt too tired or too la-zy to complete a sum because it involves holding numbers in your working memory, then your ‘brain energy’ is letting you down. And this is what makes it harder to find the enthusiasm to do anything as well. Another night of the same old TV it is then… If you were to look at the cells of a young kid under the microscope and compare them with those of a middle aged man, you’d see that the middle aged man had far fewer mitochondria. Scientists now believe that this is one of the key differences in the energy levels of children versus adults. As it happens, this is also one of the key things that a lot of nootropics tar-get. Ingredients ranging from l-carnitine, to PQQ, to Lutein, to creatine, to bitter orange work at least partially this way. Another thing that affects brain energy as we get older is blood flow. Like every other part of your body, your brain needs a steady supply of blood to provide nutrients and oxygen for healthy function. Unfortunately, as your breathlessness upon reaching the top step will attest, our blood flow suffers as we age. This is where vasodilators come in. Things like garlic extract, vinpocetine and ginkgo biloba all offer this increased energy by increasing the diameter of the blood vessels. This can also be very good for those with high blood pressure! These allow more blood, oxygen and nutrients to be directed to-ward the brain, helping you to feel more alert and more awake. As mentioned, you can also get a lot of benefit from nutrients like iron and B12 which help the body to create more red blood cells. This very simple change is very often enough to increase the amount of oxygen and nutri-ents making their way around the body to the brain and once again to su-percharge your energy levels.
Mood and Learning
As we get older, we often start to produce less of the most important neu-rochemicals – whether it’s serotonin or dopamine. Dopamine is one of the neurotransmitters most associated with attention, which also correlates to memory (the more focused you are, the more likely you are to remember something – often the things you’ve ‘forgotten’ are things you never listened to in the first place…). Dopamine is also correlated with BDNF – Bran Derived Neuro-

trophic Fac-tor. Along with nerve growth factor, BDNF is one of the key players in neu roplasticity. As we age, the rate at which are brains adapt and grow chang-es and this results in a poorer ability to learn new skills and ideas, along with a reduced interest in doing so. Guess what you can consume to increase your dopamine levels, gain focus and enhance learning? Good old caffeine! And perhaps by no coincidence, caffeine consumption is also associated with reduced risk of Alzheimer’s. Dopamine is also related to your mood, as are other neurochemicals that decrease as we age – such as serotonin, which is often known as the ‘hap-piness hormone’. Many of these neurochemicals are made from simple amino acids (the building blocks of protein) like tryptophan and l-tyrosine. Eat more eggs (which are also packed with the brain-boosting choline) and your brain will be stronger and you’ll be less cranky. Numerous other nootropic compounds can help to increase brain plasticity and there are some very fascinating studies that have shown we might someday be able to restore our brains to infant-like levels of plasticity (one study demonstrated it could be possible to teach participants perfect pitch with certain nootropics not-yet commercially available). This can not only help us to pick up new skills – to teach the old dog new tricks – but also to prevent us from falling into old, lazy thinking habits. One of the big issues here is the way we use our brain; as we get older we know more (we form more ‘crystallized intelligence’) which results in a reduced need to keep learning. What’s more, decades of rehearsing the same thought patterns (and their respective neural pathways) means that certain memories and ideas become deeply ingrained while others are ‘cut off’ from the brain and left to wither and atrophy. Use it or lose it. This is why it’s so important to keep the brain fueled with the right nutrients and ingredients even later into your life; and to support that growth with the right nutrient regime or supplements. So how do you do this? The best answer is to eat a nutrient dense diet. This can help to encourage the production of the right neurochemicals, it can help to give you more mental energy and clarity and it can improve your mood. Moreover, the right nutrients can also help protect your brain from a lot of the wear and tear that it might be subjected to over time. Your brain is damaged by free radicals just like every other cell in your body. These are molecules that can react with the outside of cell walls causing damage and potentially even impact on the nucleus of your brain. Antioxidants like vita-min C can help to prevent this kind of damage. Meanwhile, omega 3 fatty acid – the oil found fish – can help facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

www.strathmoredistrictchamber.com to improve communication between cells by enhancing ‘cell membrane permeability’. This has also been able to help stave of age related cognitive decline in studies. So if you’re starting to feel your grey matter slow down, just start eating more fruits and vegetables, more salads and more meats and oily fish. This alone can be enough to make a huge difference but if you’re not seeing re-sults or you struggle to eat healthily, consider creating a nootropic ‘stack’ for yourself. Make sure it contains the following: Vitamin C (precursor to serotonin and an antioxidant) Garlic (a natural vasodilator) Creatine (boosts cellular energy) CoQ10 and/or resveratrol (boosts cellular energy) Vitamin B6 & B12 (for enhanced energy and better L-Tyrosine & 5HT (a type of tryptophan – any amino acid supplement will work) Iron, Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamin D (these will also help with testosterone production in men) Lutein (this will also help with vision) Omega 3 Fatty Acid (improves cell-membrane permeability) Guarana (a slow releasing form of caffeine) Oh and of course you should avoid all the things that can actually damage the brain and exacerbate neurochemical imbalances/trigger deterioration. One of the worst culprits is alcohol which when consumed regularly can even end up causing a unique type of cognitive decline called ‘Korsakov’s syndrome’.
Increasing Learning, Interest and Memory With the Right Lifestyle
You know what’s even more important than all of this though?

Using your brain on a regular basis. Again, it’s a matter of use it or lose it. Part of the reason that we see much of the deterioration we do in our brain is because we stop learning new things and stop subjecting ourselves to new experiences. This is a tragic mistake. We’ve already touched on BDNF and brain plasticity but knowing how this process works is what will really highlight just why it’s so crucial to keep learning. Essentially, whenever you use your brain, you are causing specific neurons in your brain to ‘fire’ (called an action potential). If two neurons fire at the same time, a connection is caused and the more often those two neurons fire simultaneously, the stronger that connection becomes. This is how we learn and it’s how memories are formed – the more we repeat a task, the more easily one action or one cue will lead to the next. This is reinforced when we think something is important and give it our full attention – this triggers the release of dopamine and other ‘excitatory neurotransmitters’ which causes the release of BDNF to enhance more synaptic plasticity. Meanwhile, when a connection isn’t used, ‘pruning’ can occur, which means that the connection gradually deteriorates. The more you learn and the more you keep forming new connections, the more BDNF and dopamine your brain will produce. But when you stop learning new things, you gradually lose the ability to learn them. Mean-while, repeating the same actions and the same opinions over and over again, will result in it being very hard for your brain to deviate from those set pathways. This is why it’s common to see older people becoming very opinionated and very set in their ways. They’ve lost the ability to form new connections but their existing connections are absolutely set in stone. Again, think about how this correlates with changes in our lifestyle. When we are younger, everything is new and we are constantly learning (the brain loves novelty!). This continues when we’re at university and it contin-ues further when we start our careers. But then we fall into a set career path and start to repeat the same tasks every day. Those tasks lose their challenge and we are essentially just go ing through the motions. Our production of dopamine and our brain plastici-ty deteriorates. Around this time, we also stop being active. Then we retire, we stop being active at all and we spend a lot of time doing not a whole lot. We’re not using our bodies, not using our brains and prun-ing occurs quicker than new connections form. Thus we become forgetful and we find it harder to engage or to learn new things. The key then is to keep your brain active. Many articles and blog posts you read online will recommend things like chess and reading to this end but in fact what’s really most important is that you keep learning new things. The brain craves novelty and the more of that you can give it, the better it will remain at growing, learning and adapting. A great way to do this is actually to play computer games. The reason for this is that every computer game requires a different set of motor skills (ow-ing to different controls), creates unique experiences and offers fresh chal-lenges and puzzles. Online ‘social’ games are even better.

ing less able bodied, slower and older in our appearance as well. But what is actually much worse than this, is noticing your brain start to fail you. Our brain is what houses who we are. Our brain is what gives rise to all of our subjective experiences… and seeing that start to deteriorate is very frightening indeed. So the question is: how can you protect your brain into old age? Here are some strategies and suggestions that may be able to help…
Keep Learning
E NEW SY TH
IGHBOU NE R Reader’s Choice
Z AGA INE M
One of the very most important things you can do for your brain is to keep learning and to keep subjecting yourself to novel experiences. Our brains operate on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis, just like every part of our biology. So if you are going through the exact same motions day in, day out, then you will find that your brain loses the ability to learn and adapt to changes the way it once did. The problem is that so many of us do stop subjecting ourselves to new experiences as we age. Partly this is due to simple societal pressures: when we age, we tend to become less active and less social and this means we lose our opportunities for learning. The key is to keep trying new things. Many blogs will tell you that playing chess is a good way to keep your brain healthy but in fact this isn’t necessarily the best option: playing chess is just one activity and involves relatively little learning. Instead, try computer games. Why? Because each time you try a new computer game, you are forced to take up new skills and new abilities. Each time you learn a new game, you need new controls, which will incorporate new neural pathways. Each new game has an entirely new set of skills and that means you are continually learning.

Keep Socializing
One of the very best things for our brains is to keep socializing. This is highly important, as social stimulation stimulates positive hormones and keeps our brain active and challenged. As we get older, often we start to keep ourselves locked away and stop going out so much. This means less social stimulation, which means rapid deterioration. Again, this is something to avoid.

Hello all, happy May! Larry here. How excited are you? Spring is finally here. We were starting to think that we would be going straight from winter to summer for a few months. It is so wonderful to be outside, soaking up some sunshine. Annuals are purchased and waiting pa-

tiently for the last frost to pass to be put in the pots. Tulips have come up where just a few short weeks ago, there were mountains of snow. Let’s all do our happy dance. Walking outside has been a super huge treat for us; we hope you have been enjoying it also. This month is the Restaurant Issue. Roger and I have decided to find some guidelines for us Diabetics. We want to enjoy this social activity just like everyone else does. We found a really great article for you on http://www.joslin.org. Take look, we think everyone will get some good ideas from this article on how to dine out with
Dining Out with Diabetes In the real world, people with diabetes aren’t going to be eating at home and preparing their own meals everyday. Dining out at restaurants is part of our culture. By planning ahead and ordering wisely, you can have an enjoyable dining experience with diabetes.
Avoid breaded or fried foods, or foods in heavy sauces. Try fish or poultry that is grilled or boiled, without butter.
Planning Ahead
Be careful of all-you-can-eat restaurants. If you do eat at a buffet, try to fill up on vegetable dishes.
Choose a restaurant with a large menu of healthy items. Many chains have nutritional information available online. Call the restaurant ahead of time and ask if they can handle special requests. Ask your dinner companions to eat at the time you normally eat, but don’t worry if you have to eat earlier or later. Have a small snack before going to a restaurant, so you aren’t too hungry. Tips on Ordering Meals with Diabetes
Ask for salad dressing and sauces on the side. Limit alcohol to one serving.
“Choose foods that you really like,” advises Nora Saul, M.S, R.D., L.D.N., C.D.E, Joslin Clinic. “Decide if it is really good and worth it, and if it is, make accommodations. If a place has very good bread, maybe have a roll, but skip the potato. If you like sweets, share a dessert with a few other people, and take a walk afterwards. Remember, dining out is also a social experience - concentrate on sharing time with family and friends.”
Watch your portion sizes. Order an appetizer for a main course, split an entrée, or eat half and take the rest home.
We loved this article. Roger and I have been very successfully following a Low Carb diet. This is something you do not want to do without help from your doctor, but it is working very well for us and our Human. We are very grateful. Well, I think Roger is wanting to do a wander around the yard to see what else is popping up out there. So, Adios! Have a great month and enjoy the sunshine.
Ask for substitutions. For example, get vegetables instead of French fries.
Until next month, Make your Footprints Count. Larry and Roger
If you are not sure how a food is prepared, ask your server.

Cone Beam Technology 3D Imaging for the Mouth
Dentists have several ways of diagnosing dental issues – from traditional and digital x-rays to percussion testing and visual signs that provide information on the health of a tooth. But faster and more accurate diagnostic power is available to the dentist and dental team with the use of Cone Beam technology – a method that incorporates 3D imaging for a complete treatment diagnosis and planning.
Cone Beam Technology in Dentistry
Cone Beam Technology was first introduced to dentistry in Europe in 1996 and to North America in 2001. Initially used to provide a more detailed diagnosis for implant placement and orthodontic treatment planning due to its ability to give a 3-dimensional view of teeth, roots and bone – Cone Beam Technology is now incorporated more widely in dental offices to aid with the treatment planning of Root Canals, Tooth Extraction, and Jaw Surgery cases. Considered a technologically advanced method for capturing images of teeth, bone, nerve pathways and soft tissue all in a single scan – 3D Cone Beam imaging produces high-quality images comparable to a CT Scan – but with less radiation.

As with all dental procedures – women should notify their www.langdondent dental team if they suspect they might be pregnant – and all patients who have not informed their dentist of changes to their medical status should do so prior to the procedure. 3D Cone Beam Imaging is a safe and effective method of capturing diagnostic information that can help in the execution or planning of certain dental procedures. Providing dentists with a complete view of dental tissues this advanced imaging system can determine the suitability of certain procedures and can assist in successful treatment outcomes. Dr. Jess Chhokar and his team at Langdon Dental incorporate the Sirona XG 3D to deliver reliable 3D images for accurate treatment planning. Langdon Dental
How Does 3D Cone Beam Imaging Differ from Traditional X-rays?
Traditional dental x-rays are ‘flat’ images that focus primarily on tooth structure. The flatness or single dimension of these x-rays limits a dentist’s ability to view the image from all angles and manipulate the image. Sufficient for diagnosing obvious dental concerns such as decay, abscesses and missing teeth – traditional x-rays do not provide sufficient diagnostic information for certain procedures that involve all oral tissues. 3D Cone Beam imaging captures in a single scan what multiple traditional x-rays would fail to reveal – making it a viable tool in providing complete and thorough information for accurate treatment planning. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Thanks, Mom
Love, Gratitude, and Appreciation on Mother’s Day The month of May brings with it a number of annual traditions and observances. We generally get our first bits of warm, summery weather in May (or, in the case of this year, our first peek at spring!). These warmer
temperatures are accompanied by May Long weekend – the first opportunity we Albertans have to go camping and let loose after the deepfreeze that is our long, Canadian winter. Most importantly, though, May plays host to Mother’s Day! Every year, on the second weekend of this fifth month, we take some time to give thanks to the tireless, kind-hearted women who gave birth to us, raised us, and put up with unbelievable amounts of crap from us throughout our early lives – and, let’s face it, probably up to and including this day, as well! It’s not an easy job, being a mom. The hours are long, and the work, thankless. There’s an incredible amount of human waste clean-up involved, and I’d imagine it doesn’t take long until even the newest of moms is intimately familiar with all the different kinds of poop, vomit, and whatever-the-heck-that-is that comes up out of babies, toddlers, and kids on a regular basis. And that’s not even taking into account those special, special teenage years! I’m sure I don’t only speak for myself when I say that I gave my mom a run for her money between ages 13-18 – but none of it seemed to phase her. She simply took it in stride, weathered out all those hormonal mood swings, and was always there at the end of the day to lend an attentive ear, a shoulder to cry on, and a piece of advice that would undoubtedly fix whatever it was that was wrong.

Every year, as Mother’s Day approaches, I find myself wandering the narrow aisles of greeting card stores and the cavernous halls of shopping centres, looking for the perfect card-and-gift combination that says “Hey Mom, thanks for doing all that stuff that I just wrote about in those three paragraphs up there. You’re the best.” Of course, that’s easier said than done. Even today, my mom’s as selfless as ever – if you ever try to press her for what she might like for Mother’s Day, it’s always either the least troublesome and inexpensive gift for herself, or something that everyone can ultimately enjoy, like a treat for the RV that the whole family will be able to use on the next big camping trip, or something else along those same lines. That’s why this Mother’s Day, I’m doing things a bit different. I’ll still get my mom a gift, of course (I’d be a pretty awful son if I didn’t!), but beyond that, I’m going to take this Mother’s Day as an opportunity to spend quality time with my mom – both that weekend, and throughout the year to come. Now, this isn’t meant to sound conceited or arrogant, as though my mere presence were a gift in and of itself (I mean, I am pretty fun to be around, but that’s not the point). At the end of the day, those Mother’s Day cards will get tucked away in a box somewhere, and that garden gnome (a staple Mother’s Day gift around the Penn household) will find a spot out in the yard – but realistically, it’s all just stuff and nonsense. That card will be forgotten, and those gnomes will fade in the sun, but it’s the memories that are made chatting over coffee, going for walks, or playing cards that will stick around, bright and vivid, into the distant future. Looking back on those afternoons spent together will mean more to my mom (and to me) than an entire army of garden gnomes in the years to come – those memories always be there to warm the heart and brighten the days. So, take a page from my book if you’d like, and make this Mother’s Day less about singing greeting cards, and more about the stuff that really matters: spending time and making memories with that special lady who always has your back – your mom. Mmmmm…. Cookies!
“Baking cookies is comforting, and cookies are the sweetest little bit of comfort food. They are very bite-sized and personal.”– Sandra Lee
Food is a big part of our culture.
We break bread together and enjoy fellowship over a meal. Many family gatherings include generous servings of family favourites and we bring out ‘goodies’ when visitors arrive. We celebrate with a nice meal or a treat and we have our favourite foods. And then we have our comfort foods. When I changed how I ate a few years ago, I will admit that I was a bit sad that this meant giving up some things that I really enjoyed eating. I thought about my grandma’s chocolate cookies and fresh baked buns, my favourite restaurants and all the cheesy dishes that I had grown to love over the years. I wondered what I would eat instead of popcorn on those rainy afternoons when a movie seemed like the perfect activity; and how I would ever manage without ice-cream since I was choosing to not eat sugar or dairy? What? Wait a second. No ice-cream??!!?? Oh, that’s not happening, ice-cream is my absolute favourite comfort food. It brings back memories of childhood and it makes me slow down and appreciate the moment as I enjoy each and every delicious spoonful. Mmmmm… ice-cream. While people talk about comfort food, there are many other things that offer comfort as well. Perhaps the strong shoulder and kind ear of a good friend, volunteering to help those in need or the deep soothing sounds of great classical music (or the fast pace of classical rock!). We all have our own ways of finding comfort during times of trouble, sadness and confusion. At Women Talk in Strathmore last month, one Talker spoke of how her passion for plants brings her both comfort and healing strength, and has led to a new business venture. After sharing her story of a serious health crisis, she inspired the women present with her positive attitude and a reminder to be true to who we are and to go after what we feel is right for us. The second Talker, a relationship coach, had everyone laughing and nodding in agreement as she used her own relationship experiences to give us a new perspective on how we can improve relationships in our lives. She spoke of breathing into discomfort, feeling gratitude in times of challenge and inviting another person into a moment of sharing, and how this can bring a greater sense of comfort to all of our relationships. We also heard from our local Charity of Choice, the Strathmore Overnight Shelter, whose goal is to offer healing, caring and comfort to those in need. They offer overnight accommodations, food, clothing, and connect people to other local services. They are currently in need of more volunteers so if helping others brings you comfort, please reach out to the Shelter. And finally, we were asked to consider how we could bring comfort to others by extending ourselves beyond the definition of our roles at work, at home and in the community. We were also encouraged to empower other women by sharing our experiences which helps to give meaning to things that happen in life.

Cellular shades are one of the most versatile window coverings on the market. Cellular Shades, sometimes referred to as pleated or honeycomb shades, are built with small honeycomb-shaped pockets or ‘cells’ designed to keep air from escaping or entering your home to enhance your room’s energy efficiency. They are also one of the easiest shades to clean; just use the dusting tool on your vacuum. Give them a once-over on low suction and you are done, it’s that simple! After dusting, most stains can be lightly blotted away with a sponge, lukewarm water and a mild dish detergent (clear). Helpful tip: Dab, don’t rub the fabric.
Roman Shades
Roman shades are a popular solution for those who admire the elegant look of draperies but want the modern conveniences of window shades. They are a unique style of window covering that uses a variety of materials and offers two-fold styles. Cleaning roman shades should resemble the way you clean draperies and/ or curtains. This process should take place while the shades are in the lowered position, giving you access to all of the material that is exposed on a regular basis. Start with the fold section closest to the top, and gently vacuum the material in a downward direction. If necessary, spot-clean any stains with a cloth dipped in water and mild dishwashing detergent, but do not saturate the material. Rinse and blot dry.

Sheer shades are innovative products that offer the privacy benefits of a window shade with the softening view of a sheer. They are one of the most lightweight, gentle fabrics and it is extremely important to take care of them the right way. First, remove any light accumulations of dirt and dust by gently running the feather duster along every exposed surface of the shade, starting at the top and working your way down to the bottom. Next, use your vacuum with its soft brush attachment to remove any additional dirt, dust, or pollen from your shades. Finally, immerse a sponge or soft cloth in warm water with a mild soap mixture (wring it thoroughly to avoid causing water damage to your shades). Gently wipe along every exposed surface of the shades to remove light stains or dirt and dust accumulations.

greater flexibility when it comes to light control. To clean classic vinyl roller shades, vacuum both sides with a soft brush tool picking up small pieces of dust and dirt. What Happened To Social License? Will This Country Ever Build A Pipeline To Tidewater Again? Unfortunately, these are questions that need to be asked now that the Trans Mountain Pipeline project has been thrown into jeopardy. As I’m sure you’ve heard, Kinder Morgan announced it is suspending work on the project. They are worried the pipeline will be tied up indefinitely, and who can blame them? The Prime Minister failed to take immediate action to address the situation with the BC Government. The Liberals already vetoed the Northern Gateway pipeline, which was a political decision that had nothing to do with science. Then they killed Energy East with last minute regulatory changes.

What kind of signal is this sending to anyone wanting to invest in Canadian energy? It’s no surprise that the Liberals have now presided over the biggest decline in Canadian energy investment in 70 years – a loss of $80 billion dollars. On April 14, the Prime Minister finally announced that he may be working on a plan for the Trans Mountain project. But he needs taxpayer dollars to do it. Kinder Morgan didn’t ask for tax dollars – they want to get to work on the pipeline, and they just need a guarantee it will go ahead. Whether you agree with this course of action or not, I think it is an indictment of this government’s policies that the private sector might now need tax dollars to be convinced to build something in this country (and the verdict is still out on whether even that will be enough). Furthermore, a government stake in the project won’t do anything to placate those holding up the project with their opposition. As recently as last week (while on a trip to France), the Prime Minister said he wants to “phase out” the Canadian energy sector. We now have the carbon tax, regulatory changes, and inaction on Trans Mountain as proof that he means what he said. Despite their promises, this government’s policies have done nothing to secure the socalled ‘social license’ we were told was needed to build approved pipelines. Needless to say, this is bad for Canada – and especially Alberta. Energy companies don’t just provide employment - they actively invest in our communities. Thousands of community centres, hockey rinks and neighborhood events across our province are sponsored by energy companies. Not to mention important services, such as the STARS Air Ambulance. If the energy companies leave, we lose an incredibly important community partner. To all those who have written to members of parliament, attended rallies, and shown their support for Canadian energy – thank you. I know there are so many people who have lost their jobs and suffered needless hardships because of this government’s decisions. Please know that we will keep up the fight in Ottawa. The best way to get the Canadian energy sector back on track is to replace this Liberal government in 2019. I can be reached in Ottawa at 613-992-0761 or martin.shields@parl. gc.ca. Reasons to Stage Your Home for Sale If you’ve been thinking of selling your investment house or your home, you should make sure that you take full advantage of home staging trends. There are several advantages to home staging trends, which we will take a look at below. One of the best things about staged homes is that they sell in less time. This is great news for sellers, as these types of homes will sell really fast. In most cases, you won’t have to worry about your home staying on the market for a long period of time. Research has shown that staged homes sell nearly 40% faster than other homes on the market. Staged homes also sell for more money. Homes that have sat on the market for a long period of time will normally get lower offers due to the fact that home buyers will begin to think there is something wrong with the home. Staged homes on the other hand, don’t sit on the market for long at all. Once they are listed, they draw attention to themselves, resulting in a fast sale. A staged exterior will also draw viewers. When home buyers first arrive at a home that is up for sale, they instantly make up their mind whether they should get out and look around or drive off. If the yard is staged with flowers manicured and properly taken care of, chances are that buyers will want to see more. If you entice your buyers by showing them how nice the home is outside, they

will surely want to know what the home is like on the inside as well. Once a buyer has stepped inside of the home, he will know within a matter of seconds whether or not he likes the home. To get the buyer’s attention, you’ll need to stage your home to the buyer’s liking. You don’t want the buyer to feel rushed or get the wrong impression, which is why you should always set the stage and entice the buyer to take his time and get a good look at the home. Staging the living rooms and kitchens will also help to sell the home. Buyers love living rooms, which is why you should always make sure that the living room is the center piece of your home and decorate it accordingly. Kitchens, on the other hand, is where you should really go all out, decorating with fruit and such. You should always make sure that everything is in place. Buyers love to see homes that are ready to move into - and not ready to be worked on. Staged homes will also attract more real estate agents and get more advertising as well. If a real estate agent loves your home, he will want to show it off. When they do, they will advertise your home more than others, just to get you some deserved attention. This way, you can benefit from a lot of exposure at absolutely no extra cost. There’s no other way to look at it; staged homes sell. They attract more buyers, more real estate agents, and they give people the feeling of home. When you go out of your way to make the buyer feel that your home is his dream home, he will know it. Homes that aren’t staged may sell, although staged homes sell much faster and for more money. If you’ve been looking to sell your home, you should look into staging it and get the ball rolling in the right direction. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

make a few if those projects take a back burner! This year, I am having a hard time calling my kids in at the end of the day, even though there is a ton of mud and a few water front properties!! But they do have to come in to eat and get homework done still. As a Realtor and a mom, I always find it a struggle this time of year to stay on task in the kitchen, because there always seems to be something else calling my name that seems more exciting! Sometimes it will be the middle of June and I realize we have eaten a lot of grilled cheese or BBQ smokies, which are fun a few times... but not daily- no one in our house does well like that! So, this year, I am going to try to stay on a meal plan and utilize all the amenities that are at our local grocery stores that help with so many things.
Spring!!!! and GO I think everyone this year is more than ready for all that spring brings, from cleaning up the yard, planting flowers, washing windows, and, of course, all the spring sports. At our house, this consists of a mix of Rodeo, Dance, & Hockey. After a long winter, spring brings change and a hustle and bustle that creates an excitement for everyone, and often has everyone itching for some change. For me this year, I can’t wait to get my hands in the dirt and am dreaming of a backyard deck revamp. But the reality of our schedules might
So, Sunday evenings are for week planning, not only our schedules for work, school, activities and time with friends, but also meal planning!! YES this works and is soooo worth it! Taking the time to do this saves me time and money, so then I have all the right stuff for a successful week! I often hit the grocery store Sunday evening and get what is needed then when we get home we wash and cut up fruits and vegetables for kids lunches and snacks so they have easy access. I plan to cook 2-3 large fresh meals per week then we have leftover days and days that I can repurpose aspects of another night’s meal so we don’t have waste. For example, if we have roast chicken on Monday, I plan to make chicken lasagna with the leftovers - works awesome!

I also have loved using the amenities at the grocery stores - I am not too proud to grab some already chopped vegetables or a pre-cooked chicken to make supper or to make meal prep go quicker; chicken and a bag of coleslaw is a winner at our house after a long day. Our family also loves a freezer meal from Back to Good or M&M - I often try to make double when I make things like lasagna or meatloaf- but sometimes it is a welcomed treat to enjoy a home cooked meal you have not prepared yourself. These simple tricks have become lifesavers for our family.

It has been so nice to see the sun, seeing kids play and jump in puddles and to smell BBQ’s burning off winter as people start to enjoy the lovely evenings. I want to send my thoughts to those in
Taber and Drumheller who are living through some intense overland flooding right now, and to our families in Dalroy and Delacour who are experiencing some terrible flooding in their fields and near their homes as well. We know that Rocky View will be out determining solutions for some of these problems, and we hope to see some of those solutions working for our residents fairly soon. Our calving season has been challenging this year and we want to thank all of our amazing farmers who are out at 2 am in -20-degree weather saving orphan calves and helping their neighbours. I wanted to chat a bit with you about some disturbing actions taken by our Federal Government and I’ll leave you with a couple of articles to read that inspired my rant. Let’s first talk about the attestation requirement for not-for-profits to apply for funds for summer programs. How do you feel about checking a box that may go against your religious or moral beliefs in order to receive funding from the federal government for summer student projects? I guess even though you pay taxes, your personal choices in life are going to be judged by the Prime Minister. Please look at the Citizen Go website and see their petition there, and ask yourself if the government is acting reasonably? Should the Prime Minister’s moral beliefs trump yours? Or should we be able to look at policy and see where good and real work is being done in the community? We should be elevating community. Why should your personal views stop groups from receiving funding for your summer programs? Why is the Government discriminating in this way? Does this bring us together? Does this forward our cause to take care of each other, to learn about each other, to accept people for who they are? I believe it is divisive and stops people from wanting to help the very communities that they function in because of their personal choices, and the way they live their personal lives. So, this next rant is interesting. How do you feel about our Federal Government funding a position with an activist group working to stop the Kinder Morgan project? The group is called Dogwood BC and has received American money to fund their attempts to landlock Alberta resources, which punishes Alberta and rewards, you guessed it, the Americans. The “non-profit” group is trying to stop the Kinder-Morgan pipeline and tanker project. This is real, folks. They are receiving grant money from your tax dollars to fund their anti-oil eco-activism. This is not new and has happened in previous governments. The reason supposedly, is because the Federal Government has never thought to force their political agendas on our youth’s ability to canvass for things that they care about. Hmmm. The Alberta government needs to stop borrowing on the backs of future generations. This government has led us to believe, though I think we know better, that the revenue side of things just didn’t meet expectations, but truthfully, even in this downturn, the revenue is fine, but the spending is out of control. The only way to fix this massive type of deficit is through spending restraint. It gets confusing, I know, and just for clarity, you probably hear the words debt and deficit used interchangeably and they are completely different words. Debt is money owed, and deficit is money that is spent beyond what you have. Debt is sort of a running tally of spending or the accumulation of past deficits, and deficit is based on an amount over a certain time period, like the 2nd quarter of a budget cycle of what it takes in versus what it spends on services, healthcare, and social security. If you are in the negative you have a deficit, if you are in the positive you have a surplus. David Suzuki is getting an honorary degree from the University of Alberta. This is just unbelievable to so many of us in this amazing province blessed with our natural resources. Look, I am all for critical thinking, and I think we should push ourselves to look beyond our own ideologies, but to offer an honorary degree to a man who has said and I quote: “For someone to want to raise the issue of economy over climate change, it’s the way the southern states in the United States said we can’t abolish slavery, it’ll destroy our economy.” (Daniel Tencer, The Huffington Post Canada-11/24/2015). David Suzuki believes that oil businesses are willing to sacrifice our atmosphere for the economy, and that climate change is a moral issue. Well I can tell you I have an issue with this person being honoured at the University of Alberta, and that he has been funded by large organizations through the United States, our biggest competitor to stop our ethical production, and that he has demonized our energy industry. Please add your name to the petition: Sign it at SupportCanadianEnergy.ca. Thank you, Cody Battershill, for your unending fight for our resources and our prosperity. Mr. Suzuki is certainly entitled to his opinion, but that is all it is and it is certainly not balanced or based on facts. As you know, our electoral boundaries have changed. In the next election most of you will be voting in the new constituency of Chestermere – Strathmore. I am seeking the nomination as the United Conservative Party (UCP) Candidate for Chestermere – Strathmore. I have lived in the Chestermere area for 40+ years and this my home. Your issues are my issues and I am truly honoured that you have placed your trust in me. Unlike in a provincial election, in order to vote in the nomination contest for the UCP you MUST be a UCP member. Along with a dedicated group of volunteers I am working hard to earn your support
with door knocking, phoning, holding Town Halls, and generally getting out into the community. UCP membership is open to all Albertans 14+ and is only $10. Contact my team at www. VoteLeela.com, email VoteLeela@gmail.com, or phone 587-4296465 to join the UCP, volunteer or donate, learn about upcoming events, or give me feedback. Your voices are what inspires me to keep working hard for you in the Legislature. I hope to speak to you soon at your door, a Town Hall or coffee shop, or via email, phone, or social media. Congratulations to Terri Torraville at Indus Graphics, celebrating 15 years in business in Langdon. We also hope you had a wonderful time at the volunteer fair and enjoyed the Langdon Market. As you know, we have had several accidents on our local roads, and our love goes out to the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones. As always, we love to hear from you.

WILDFLOWER RANCH More Freedom, More Space, More Life
“Highly Recommended by Local Builders”
Highest Warranty In The Business Eaves Trough Cleaning
Spring has come to southern Alberta! The sun’s shining warm and brightly, new life is springing up in every direction you look, and wildflowers are beginning to push their way through those last few stubborn bits of snow. Colourful new crocuses and asters aren’t the only wildflowers blossoming on the prairiescape, though. There’s an exciting new community growing in Strathmore. Take a drive out to the westernmost end of town adjacent to the Strathmore Golf Club, and discover rustic, neighbourly Wildflower Ranch, where clean air and open spaces abound! This 271-acre, master planned community first began building in 2011, and now boasts over 150 home sites, where some of the friendliest folks in town have begun planting roots and laying the foundation for a lifetime of memories and unforgettable experiences here on the prairies. More than just an expertly-designed neighbourhood, Wildflower Ranch is a young, vibrant community, featuring integrated pathways along a scenic, burbling canal, and walkways that explore over 40 acres of stunning parklands and wetlands. Ranch gate entrances and a unique village centre bring further personality to the community, and really help make Wildflower Ranch a singular place to call home. Built with families in mind, Wildflower Ranch is also the sort of neighbourhood you can plan a future around. Children’s play areas can be found scattered throughout the laneways, and central to the development is a 10-acre site that’s ready to host a brand-new K-9 school, where children will be able to learn in a newly-constructed building outfitted with all the latest in leading-edge educational technology. Equally as exciting as these local amenities is what lies just on the horizon for this new and spirited community. Wildflower Ranch is working on plans to build an enhanced, 15-acre wetland complex, as well as a neighbourhood commercial area to meet residents’ daily needs. Finally, plans to construct a seniors’ campus are in also in the works, which will allow residents to rest soundly in the knowledge that they won’t have to leave either their community and or their social support network as they grow older – a truly comforting thought. The houses at Wildflower Ranch are being expertly constructed by Aquilla Homes, Loreck Homes, and Trilogy Homes. Each of these established and trustworthy builders has something particular and essential that they bring to the community – tune

in next month to learn more, when we’ll discuss in-depth the vision and passion that these three homebuilding companies are bringing to this new, vibrant neighbourhood. Likewise, we’ll be running a third article coming up in our July issue showcasing the growing, burgeoning community programs that are bringing residents together and forging neighbourly bonds faster than you can “Welcome to Wildflower Ranch!” Here at The Newsy Neighbour, we’re all about community. Wildflower Ranch has been around and in the works for a good few years now, but it’s continuously growing each and every day as more families discover life in Strathmore and make their homes here. We’d like to welcome everybody in Wildflower Ranch to our southern Albertan community – whether you were the first family to purchase a plot back in 2011, or you just took possession of your new build this past month. We can’t wait to see you around town (maybe at the upcoming Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival on June 16?), and couldn’t be happier to call you our new neighbours. Welcome home! I don’t usually let things get to me very often, but whenever I see a headline about a tragic event of any kind happening, it usually ends with comments saying, “thoughts and prayers”. Now, don't get me wrong; even though I do believe in the power of prayer, I also believe that we need to do more than just praying for one another.

I strongly believe that we need to make a stand for our country and world by preventing these senseless acts of violence and cruelty and learn to hate less and love more because at the end of the day, we all have one life and it's up to us to live it to the fullest. It’s understandable that not everyone shares the same beliefs, and I’m completely okay with that, but what I’m not okay with is people destroying the world for their own personal gain. No matter what your beliefs are, violence is not the answer for any situation, and it's the wrong thing to do. I truly believe that if we focused less on hatred and negativity and focused more on spreading more love and positivity, then we would most definitely be making the world a better place to live in. Instead of judging someone for the colour of their skin or what their beliefs are, at least take the time in getting to know them because like the saying goes, you should never judge a book by its cover until you read the story. The overall point I’m trying to make is that it’s time for us to make a difference and spread positive vibes instead of hating one another because when it comes down to it, we have one world, and it's up to us to make it a world worth living in.
If someone is strong enough to bring you down, show them you are strong enough to get back up. ~ A. Josland

Business Bytes: Should you keep your business Facebook page?
In spite of all that you have been hearing about Facebook recently, it is still an important social media channel for your business. Facebook allows for targeted marketing and instant customer feedback in ways that other social media platforms don’t. A successful Facebook page means to not be overly self-promotional. You need to create content that engages your followers and gives them a reason to interact and share with their friends. This is best achieved by mixing your content to include text posts, tips, photographs, videos and don’t forget to share and comment on other pages who have relevant information.

There is always good that comes out of rocky times and bad press; once things have been resolved around personal pages, Facebook will move on to improve the features it offers to businesses. In the meantime some of the current features that will help your company include: • The ability to private message when you create a post. Select the Get Messages option and Facebook will automatically add a button to your post that takes people directly to Messenger. • Page Insights which monitor the effectiveness of your posts. Facebook Insights will also provide you will information about your customer base, such as the type of people who follow you, where they are located, how old they are and more. • Facebook Ads allow you to control how much you want to spend and for how long you want the ad to run. Ad campaigns can be pinpointed to specific demographics, locations, interests and behaviours. You can also pay to ‘boost’ a well-performing post to give it a broader outreach. Once you are familiar with these features, you will find them effective and time efficient. As with any social media Facebook is not a numbers game. It is about the quality of the content and building a relationship with your followers. Some businesses have opted to channel their time and money into a vibrant Facebook page instead of their website. Tangible results, instant customer engagement and the ability to quickly identify what is and isn’t working are some of the reasons for this decision even in these troubled times.
