Part of Alberta Health’s strategy to ensure that Albertans receive comprehensive primary care is via Primary Care Networks. As the name suggests, a Primary Care Network (PCN) focuses on PRIMARY CARE. We want to maintain your current good health, manage health challenges, and prevent health issues from becoming serious. Through this network, you have access to registered nurses, foot care nurses, geriatricians, family counselors, dieans, and diabetes educators - all working together to ensure greater connuity of care for each paent.
These health specialists offer free one-on-one appointments, as well as classes on nutrion, exercise, health, and mental wellness complemenng the care you get from your family doctor. Primary Care Networks help people access the health services they need when they need them. PCN specialists know their way around the health care system, and can navigate your best path. Alberta has 41 PCNs. In the Strathmore area, your go-to team is the Calgary Rural Primary Care Network. Get in touch. We’d love to help you be as healthy as you can be!

Welcome to the Twitterverse
Its ability to increase your company’s visibility in a large geological area is impressive. Plus you can like and retweet comments that mention you and reply to customers in real time. So what about the ratio of numbers following vs followers? Rule of thumb is not to be following more people/businesses than are following you. However when you are initially getting your twitter presence up and running this is impossible, so don’t worry about the numbers. With time if your feed is helpful, interesting and relevant the numbers will equalize somewhat. My numbers are off but @RichardBranson or @BillGates are not going to be following me anytime soon but what they post interests me.
Twitter is where people communicate in 280 characters, hashtags and cryptic chats and I’m not going to try to convince you that you have to be on Twitter because it isn’t for every business.
When it comes to your post, don’t subscribe to canned (automatic replies) such as ‘thank you for following.’ Work your feed, share others content and respond personally to any questions and comments.
When it comes to using Twitter effectively never has it been more important to know who your target customer or client is. This platform’s users are predominately urban, educated, and have above average income. It is popular with the millennials (22 -37 years of age), as well as the forty to fifty-year-olds.
You will quickly get used to hashtags, find industry related ones to form content around and create your post. You can also utilize trending hashtags such as #MondayThoughts, #WednesdayWisdom or #FridayReads to not only talk about business but touch on areas outside of work. Share your photograph of a beautiful Alberta sunset, post about something general from your life. Don’t be all business as this comes across as too much hard sell and turns people off following you.
Now ask yourself: • Do we need to reach customers in say, Calgary? • Do I want to spread my business to an even larger radius – across Canada or internationally? If the demographics fit and you answered “yes” to either question above next decide what you want to achieve by having your business on Twitter: • Generate leads & sales • Increase brand awareness • Provide a customer support channel
You will start to discover Twitter chats around your industry; try a few and see if they work for you, some businesses find them helpful. As a consultant, I find them laborious and time-consuming with little return except for a few more followers. I know I have covered a lot as Twitter is one of the more challenging social media platforms. It requires careful strategy but it will be a vital part of your marketing if as stated at the beginning your target demographic is there.
Twitter provides many ways to help you achieve your goals: • Live tweeting of special events • Opinion Polls • Ability to offer helpful and educational content • Let’s your audience know about your company culture • Keeps your business in front of potential new customers

Experience John Corabi at the Langdon Firehouse this June Rock n Roll Royalty Touring Through Langdon You guys, we’ve got some news. It’s big. In fact, it’s bigger than big. It might just be the biggest music announcement we’ve ever made here at The Newsy Neighbour. We’re proud to join The Firehouse Bar and Grill in welcoming legendary rock vocalist John Corabi to Langdon for an intimate, once-in-a-lifetime performance on June 22! A Rock Legend Comes to Langdon If you’re not someone who regularly takes deep dives into artists, bands, and musicians, you might not know right away who John Corabi is. We’ll bet that you’re pretty familiar with a little band called Mötley Crüe, though – and if you’ve heard of them, you’ve heard of Corabi.
Mötley Crüe to come and bring the heat this summer in June. How ridiculously cool is that??? John Corabi went on to perform, write, and record with a number of other influential and heavy-hitting metal acts in the years that followed, including the Eric Singer Project, RATT, Union, supergroup Brides of Destruction, and more. Finally, in 2015, Corabi officially settled into his current role as guitarist and lead vocalist for The Dead Daisies – an Australian-American rock project that’s featured members from Guns N’ Roses, The Rolling Stones, INXS, The Cult, Whitesnake, Nine Inch Nails, and Journey at various points in time. In addition to providing lead vocals and guitarwork for The Dead Daisies, Corabi is also enthusiastically dedicated to his solo career. In fact, as of press time, Corabi is currently wrapping up a stint of Australian tour dates in support of his newest release, Live ’94, with a special limited-run white-vinyl edition of an earlier recording, Unplugged, set to release later this April. Then, after returning home to the States to play a few more shows, Corabi will be making a special trip north of the border to stop in on our town for a one-night-only performance hosted by The Firehouse. Yup, you heard that right – John Corabi’s flying up to Canada specifically to play a show right here, in Langdon. Kyle Penn
First, allow us to set the scene. Prior to his time as frontman for the Crüe, John Corabi cut his teeth as vocalist and acoustic guitarist for LA-based hard rock act The Scream. Then, in 1992, former Mötley Crüe vocalist Vince Neil quit the band (or was fired, depending on who you ask!), and Corabi stepped into the spotlight as frontman for the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band. In 1994, Mötley Crüe released their mould-breaking self-titled album, fronted by none other than John Corabi himself. Marking something of a departure for the band, Mötley Crüe had a sound that was heavier and more technically-complex than its predecessors, signaling a step forward for the band and an evolution of the influential sound they had begun to pioneer in their earlier recordings. That’s right, Langdon. The Firehouse booked a member of

BROCCOLI SALAD YOU DO LIFE. WE DO TAXES.
Open Year-Round CHESTERMERE #32, 140 East Chestermere Drive Chestermere (403) 520-0090
This may be the easiest and most delicious salad I make. All my children love it and when I take it anywhere, it is an instant hit. And, talk about GOOD for you. We all know that Broccoli has twice the vitamin C of an orange, almost as much calcium as whole milk (with a better rate of absorption), and contains anti-cancer and anti-viral properties with its selenium content. It’s important to note that broccoli is best when eaten raw, because cooking and processing destroys some of its antioxidants. All you need for this recipe is: Broccoli, chopped—approximately 4 – 5 cups, 1 small onion, 1 cup of cheddar cheese, 1 cup of Mayonnaise (or Miracle Whip), 2 tbsps of white vinegar (I use white wine vinegar) and ¼ of a cup of sugar.
STRATHMORE 205B - 3rd Avenue Strathmore (403) 983-0022 LibertyTaxCanada.ca LibertyTaxCanada
LibTaxCanada
The rest is self explanatory: Chop the broccoli and onion, grate the cheese. Mix the mayonnaise, vinegar and sugar and mix the whole healthy wonderfulness of everything together. I told you it was easy. Some people add cooked bacon, which is also wonderful, and something I have done in the past—it just depends on your mood!
Founded in 2011, the Chestermere Chamber of Commerce provides an avenue for businesses in the community to create a positive business environment and essentially exists to make the community a better place in which to live. The Chamber works closely with its municipal government and peaks for the business community at public hearings, the media and behind closed doors. It is the "United voice of Chestermere business".

PETS ASK THE VET What Constitutes An Emergency For My Pet? Sunny days are here and the family is more active outside. What happens when your dog encounters a coyote? Or your cat gets into a fight with another neighbourhood cat? How do you know when a situation is critical enough to find a veterinarian immediately? Anything is worth at least a call if you're not sure what's wrong, but some things require urgent attention. The following constitute true emergencies: • Seizure, fainting or collapse. • Eye injury, no matter how mild. • Vomiting or diarrhea -- anything more than two or three times within an hour, or if the vomit or diarrhea contains frank blood. • Allergic reactions, such as swelling around the face, or hives, most easily seen on the belly. • Any suspected poisoning, including antifreeze, rodent or snail bait, and human medication. Cats are especially sensitive to insecticides (such as flea-control medication for dogs) or any petroleum-based product. • Snake or venomous spider bites. • Thermal stress -- from being either too cold or too hot -- even if the pet seems to have recovered. The internal story could be quite different. • Any wound or laceration that's open and bleeding, or any animal bite. • Trauma, such as being hit by a car, even if the pet seems fine. Again, the situation could be quite different on the inside.
Your pet will always be treated like a part of our family at the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore We have recommendations, training information, and handouts that will help you and your pet. We provide ultimate care in a safe, comfortable environment; catered to your pet’s specific needs including: › Annual Health Examinations › Vaccination Appointments › Behavior Consultations › Isolation ward › Breeder puppy vaccinations › Travel documents › Pediatric patient exams › Geriatric patient exams › Insurance › Referrals
403.901.1800 clinic & emergency | info@animalcarecentre.ca | animalcarecentre.ca We are located north of the Trans Canada Hwy on RR 254, 2 km West of Strathmore.
• Any respiratory problem that involves trouble breathing or near drowning. • Straining to urinate or defecate. • Although some other problems aren't life threatening, they may be causing your pet pain and should be taken care of without delay. Signs of pain include panting, laboured breathing, increased body temperature, lethargy, restlessness, crying out, aggression and loss of appetite. Some pets seek company when suffering, while others will withdraw. When in doubt, err on the side of caution, always. Better to be dead wrong about a minor medical problem than to have a pet who's dead because you guessed wrong about a major one. Call your local veterinary clinic before you need help and ask what arrangements the staff suggests for emergency or after-hours care. If your veterinarian refers clients to an emergency clinic after regular business hours, be sure you know which clinic, what the phone number is and how to get there. Most importantly, do not self-medicate your pet. Household pain medications can be lethal for your cats and dogs and may interfere with the care of your pet once seen by the veterinarian. If your animal has suffered an emergency, provide it with comfort and warmth and call your veterinarian immediately for further instructions. Jodi Viste, DVM

Adam & Eve
Adam: Lord, Eve is beautiful. Why did you make her so beautiful? God: So you would always want to look at her. Adam: Lord, her skin is so soft. Why did you make her skin so soft? God: So you would always want to touch her. Adam: She always smells so good. Lord, why did you make her smell so good? God: So you would always want to be near her. Adam: That's wonderful Lord, and I don't want to seem ungrateful, but why did you make her so foolish? God: So she would love you.
Wedding Advice Always Speak Directly to Your Spouse: Don’t try to send your spouse a message by having fake conversations with your children or dogs and pretending he or she isn't in the room (i.e. We wouldn't have been late if mom hadn't taken that phone call, etc.). Don’t compliment your wife for how she used to look in outfits that no longer fit. Tell your wife she looks great NO MATTER WHAT. Go to Bed Angry: It's better to go to bed angry than stay up all night fighting – you'll need your rest in order to win the fight tomorrow. Don't Expect Dinner to be Made: Do not come home and ask your wife “What’s for dinner?” Implying that she's responsible for dinner will surely anger her. This isn't the 1950s. Both sexes are capable of preparing a meal.

Love is a symbol of eternity. It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end. ~Author Unknown
Love one another and you will be happy. It's as simple and as difficult as that. ~Michael Leunig
Dads Are Not Babysitters: If you're spending time with the kids while your wife is out, do not refer to it as babysitting – not unless you want to piss off your wife. The Thought Doesn't Count: Don't tell your wife about the gift you almost got her. Although it's nice to know that your spouse was thinking of you, it's nicer to know that he thought of you and brought you a present. Women Lie: When your wife says, "I won't be mad" she's lying. When she says, "I want you to be honest with me – do I look fat in this?" she's lying. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff: If you insist on putting your foot down about everything, you're bound to get exhausted. Instead, let the small stuff slide and save the big fights for important stuff, such as finances, children and picking the movie. Help Him Improve Himself: If your husband is a hunter or fisher and brings home some sort of trophy, say, "I thought it would be bigger." It will encourage him to try harder next time. Correct His Driving: How will your husband know he's going too fast unless you continuously slam the imaginary brakes on the passenger side of the car? Play the Damsel in Distress to Get What You Want: When you need an unpleasant job done around the house don't ask your husband to do it. Instead, attempt the job yourself, do it badly and let him show you the "right" way to do it. He gets to be the hero, and you get to go relax.

7 Tips To Ensure A Worry-Free Wedding Day You can hear the wedding bells already. Friends and family gathered together to witness your big day. The limousine ride, the toasts, wedding cake and the first dance -- it's all coming together for the perfect day. But wait! Before you say "I do," there are a number of important things that you and your future spouse must do to become officially married. Many newlyweds overlook the fact that a marriage is a legal contract. Two individuals merge all they have into a new legal entity or partnership. While many couples often focus on the big day and all of the events surrounding the ceremony and reception, there are a number of legal steps that newlyweds must consider as part of the process. To help you and your partner have a worry-free wedding day, here's a prenuptial checklist from FindLaw.com with legal items to consider as you merge your households into one.
Changing Names It's often one of the first big dilemmas facing a new bride: Keep your maiden name, or take his last name? It's a big decision, because if you decide to change your legal name, it means changing your name on everything from your driver's license to stock certificates. While thinking this through, also think about the last names of children you may have in the future.
Marriage Requirements Each province has its own requirements for couples wishing to be married, some of which include: marriage licenses, blood tests or residency requirements. Make sure you and your fu-

If either you or your future spouse has been married before, make sure you have obtained all legal documents to ensure that your new marriage is valid and legal in the eyes of your province.
Marriage Ceremonies Most provinces have legal requirements pertaining to the marriage ceremony itself, including who may perform the marriage ceremony and whether witnesses are required. Check with your city or province or provincial government website about these requirements.
Prenuptial Agreements A prenuptial or pre-marriage agreement can help define the property and financial rights and obligations of marrying spouses, including what will happen if the marriage ends. If you are considering entering into a prenuptial agreement, you should be aware of the legal requirements that must be met in order for the agreement to be considered valid and enforceable.

A little bit of everything Gaylene is a Strathmore resident that has trouble taking life seriously and can usually be found making inappropriate or sarcastic remarks around town much to the embarrassment of her family and friends. (of which she has both – honest!)
Mom. One little word, three little letters and perhaps one of the most powerful words in the entire world. M – O – M. It is world full of meaning and emotion - hope and fear and somedays it seems like it is being said with all the love a little heart can hold. Of course at times, it can be said as if it should be a four letter word not three. General Pracce Family Densts
I have held the prestigious right to be called Mom for over 15 years. When my first son was born I could not wait for him to say momma for the first time. It hurt my heart that his first word was book. Oh, but the joy, the pure unadulterated pleasure I received from rubbing it into my husband’s face when momma was said before daddy. Seven years of love and marriage combined to not only create a little human #105f 100 Ranch Market, Strathmore, Alberta, T1P0A8 being but also the ultimate competition for bragging rights www.theranchdentalcentre.com – yes, what would our boy child mumble first? I admit that I may have spent all day while Les was at work speaking and Dr. Ashkan Hamzehi DDS; signing to our pride and joy. And it is possible that Mom was Dr. Sharif Faizi DMD; Dr. Arzy Kafrouny DDS signed at a ratio of 100 to 1 to dad, but hey I was the one with the broken tail bone from childbirth. I had earned that right. For the first year every little momma filled with me with joy. Our second son arrived 18 months after the first and the competition was back on. Again I won! Yeah team Momma! And then the terrible two’s hit. Oh sweet momma. All day, every day, every hour of every day. Momma, Momma, Moooooommmmmmma! Like the cries of a pack of hyenas about to tear out the throat of their prey, my sons had managed to turn such a sweet word into a battle cry. A battle cry shouted at a decibel akin to aircraft taking off that, like the plane, continued to rise higher and higher until an ear shattering pitch was reached. One would think that this battle cry would be reserved for the direst of situations. No. My goldfish cracker is facing the wrong. Moooooooommmmmmma. I dropped my stuffy. Mooooooooooommma. My socks are blue not green. Mooooooooooooommmmma. My brother is breathing! Moooooooooooooooommmma just about lost her mind the first three years.

Moooooommmma became and new word – whymom. Time to have a nap – whymom? Eat your noodles – whymom? Put down the garter snake – whymom? Stop trying to suffocate your brother – whymom? In case you’re wondering what the answer to whymom is, it’s chocolate and wine. Once the lads began school, the whymom was once again replaced; this time with the word butmom, or on special occasions butmooommma. Son, time to come in – butmom. Boys stop trying to put the cat in pajamas – butmom. Bedtime boys – in stereo – butmommmmma! Around fourth grade I finally became mom. But now every time the lads said the word it was accompanied by spastic facial expressions and eye roles leading me wonder if they had develop some weird allergy that caused facial tics. Mom (eyes towards heaven) I don’t need a coat, it isn’t that cold out. Mom (accompanied by a look of either constipation or disgust) Ben’s Mom lets him play Grand Theft Auto. The eye roll mom to was replaced – it was now the “make no eye contact Mom.” I have to admit I may have brought this one on myself. It could have been due to the fact that I discovered the best way to get the boys to behave was threaten them with “the talk”. Guys acting up in the car, mom starts talking about all the place hair is going to sprout soon. Being rude and disrespectful? Hey guys, knock it off or hear your creation story. Yes, Mom for the win! Now my lads are starting to emerge from the cocoon of puberty and are pretty awesome young men. Both tower over me and my youngest is more likely to call me shrimpy than mom these days, while my oldest speaks in a baritone voice that Johnny Cash would envy. And yet, no matter how the boys say it, Mom is still the best sounding word in the world to me. (Closely followed by chocolate, wine and nap.)

Add Spices: Cinnamon or Pumpkin Spice Spices can be incredibly healing, they can decrease inflammation and strengthen your immune system. HERE’S HOW: Pour the hot water over a tea bag and steep for 4-6 minutes in a mug. Or, prepare coffee or loose leaf tea in whatever way you want. While your tea is steeping, heat your coconut milk in a saucepan until it just begins to steam. Once the coconut milk is warm, use a milk frother, hand blender, or simply whisk by hand until frothy. Once the coconut milk is frothed, gently pour it over the tea. Finish with honey to taste, a dash of cinnamon on top, and enjoy your coffee house chai tea latte from the comfort of your own home! Alternatively, you can put all ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix on high speed for 20 seconds until frothy. This method works well if you are adding butter and/or coconut oil to the drink. Once all the ingredients are blended, enjoy a smooth, creamy, health-filled treat.
MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL TREAT Mother's Day is coming up next month! Make your MOM her Own Coconut Milk Latte! Lattes are comforting on a cold day, a long drive, or a Monday morning. YOU can make your own latte that tastes amazing AND benefits your health. Choose From: Organic Coffee, Chai Tea or Green Tea Non organic coffee and tea are often heavily sprayed with pesticides. To save your body from that toxic burden, opt for organic blends. Add a Healthy Fat: Full Fat Coconut Milk, Coconut Oil or Nut Milks. Adding some quality healthy fat to your coffee will help stabilize blood sugar levels and will help your body absorb and use nutrients. Choose a Natural Sweetener: Raw Honey, Maple Syrup or Coconut Sugar. Refined sugar is the number one toxin to your body. It accelerates aging, feeds diseases like cancer, and causes mood swings, weight gain, and skin problems.

THE CHRONICLES OF LARRY AND ROGER:
A Pair of Diabetic Feet
Written by: Vicki L Myhre CPOD (I) CMP PFRP. Enlightened Soles. Internationally Certified Podologist. Registered through the Canadian Examining. Board of Health Practitioners
HI ALL! Larry here. Happy Easter and HAPPY SPRING! What a beautiful month last month was (after all the cold weather disappeared). The birds are coming back through. Roger mentioned how wonderful it is to hear the geese honking as they fly overhead, heading to their water hole or field, or continuing on their trek further north. And what a site to see. They have been flying over in groups of a few to groups of hundreds! We also really enjoy the swans and really watch with anticipation, for their arrival. Their stop in the Strathmore Area is brief but delightful. The sounds of the finches and robins starting to mingle with the chickadees that have been hanging out all winter is like a symphony. The pretty swamp birds defy their beauty with the controversial croaking and creaking and clicking sounds that they belt out. The frogs start to sing as they dig themselves out of the muddy watery areas all around us. People start to move outdoors and we can start to hear neighbours talking and laughing over their fences. The sounds of lawnmowers and yard machines fill the air. All this noise and activity adds to the fresh, pure delight of watching the world come alive after a long, cold, white winter. Roger has convinced me that it is time to put the computer away as much as possible, and spend some time enjoying the great outdoors and the beauty of the transformation that is taking place. We hope you all decide to do the same. Along with spring comes EASTER. Happy Easter, everyone! Easter, for us, is a time of renewal, celebration, family, bunnies and chocolate and handcrafted eggs, and laughter. A time to get our steps in outside AND at the indoor track. Don’t replace one with the other, ADD one to the other; your health will thank you for it. Especially during times of festivity, when we typically eat more than we usually do and more than we should. We once again use the spring as a reminder that our
10,000 steps is the absolute minimum exercise we must do, health permitting, on a daily basis to stay healthy and strong. We found this absolutely amazing recipe on the Diabetes Canada Website. It would be an amazing base for a beautiful Easter Brunch Spread. We hope you enjoy it, we sure did. Check out the website for many amazing recipes

Contentment Is An Inside Job
I have this personality trait that has been one of my downfalls my whole life. I have always been in a hurry. I am not referring to hurrying to an appointment, though tardiness is a bad habit of mine. Rather, I mean in a hurry to get to somewhere else in my life. In a hurry to get to the next step, the next day, the next adventure. For much of my life, I was never truly content. This is a trait that, to this very day, I must be aware of in myself. Here are some of the thoughts and feelings I have: I will be happier once xyz has happened. Things will fall into place once abc is over. Geez, look how green the grass is over there. If only. Someday I will. I can't wait for. Maybe you can relate? Sometimes I am so wrapped up in my head, so focused on the past or worried about the future that I don't even realize I am missing the present. Over the past years of my life, however, I have cultivated a few healthy habits that have helped me to slow down and stay present. The gifts of this have far exceeded the work that it took to create the habits, and I thought that this month (in honour of the Beauty issue) that I would share some of them with you. There are no right or wrong way to do these things, and each of them are simple to do every day. Perhaps you are doing them already? Then I encourage you to spread the good news! We CAN be happier, healthier, more beautiful, content and joyful – and the power is ours alone.

doesn't, though it is now a place of solace when once it was a study in twitching. This is my favourite: Take a breath, bringing a full inhalation into the body. Pause for a moment. Release the breathe smoothly and completely. Pause for a moment. Repeat. Feel your body. Relax. Notice your thoughts as they arise, but focus upon the flow of your breath. By practising stilling the mind, we start to notice the mind and emotions and its many machinations. In that we are released from being ruled by it.
2. Practice being mindful.
Mindfulness can be practised all the time. When we are aware of the nature of the mind (meditation is hugely helpful here) we can notice when we are NOT present. If we are thinking about the past, the future, our responses within a conversation, even watching TV while we are eating a meal we are depriving ourselves of the most beautiful place in the world – NOW. Life, as it is happening, is full of textures, layers, fleeting moments of perfection. The practice is simple – be present as much as you can remember to be. Try this exercise: Choose a piece of food. First look at it – notice the colour, shape, all its visual cues. Then feel it – is it smooth, bumpy, furry, does it feel different on different areas? Now smell it – close your eyes and breathe deep. Finally, after using all these other senses, take one bite – but don't chew it yet. Feel it on your tongue, move it around, notice the saliva being generated, how it feels in your mouth. As you chew, do so slowly and many times before swallowing, and notice the flavours and textures emerging and changing. Spend a moment in gratitude for the nourishment that it is giving you. By practicing mindfulness we are able to find the most remarkable contentment in even our most mundane of activities. In this practice we find our life, our relationships, our experiences enriched beyond measure. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

3. Do the things that fill your cup.
Do you love hiking in nature? Reading? Creating art, doing photography? Do you love to play cards with your kids or ride your bike 60km/hr down the highway? Do you love to watch the sun set and listen to the frogs croak in the twilight? Taking a yoga class? Whatever it is that you are drawn to, do it. Unapologetically and without fail, make these activities happen every day for yourself if you can. Do them with friends or do them by yourself. Don't wait for anyone, and don’t apologize for the time it takes. It is often easy to do these things when we have plenty of time and energy. But when times are hectic and we are feeling mentally and emotionally drained, these practices will keep us sane and grounded.

Try this: What are you passionate about? Nurture that with a mindful quiet mind and a determined heart. I used to look for happiness outside of myself. I thought I might find it tomorrow, or when things fell into place. I wished for the right person to come along make me feel happy, the right job, more money, more luck... But by practising these things, I have learned something very important. In learning to be present (more), in recognizing my thoughts as being separate from ME, in spending time doing the things I love – joy and contentment happen RIGHT NOW. I have learned that it is in moments where beauty exists. If I still my busy mind and be HERE, I get to witness this beauty. I have also learned that by practising these things, I get to have this joy and contentment happen more every day. Namaste

All-on-4 is a contemporary treatment that has revolutionized www.langdondental.com the way we think of replacing a full set of teeth. It is a simplified solution for patients who have lost all of most of their teeth. This aesthetic full-arch rehabilitation provides you with teeth you can chew with. The All-on-4 treatment concept replaces your missing teeth with a provisional full dental denture supported by only 4 titanium dental implants in either you lower or upper jaw. With less implants needed, overall treatment time and cost is reduced. The unique All-on-4 solution also ensures greater stability of the denture in the mouth.
Benefits of Implant Supported Dentures • Fixed Solution: Unlike dentures, the All-on-4 procedure provides you with a full mouth of teeth that are secure and not mobile. • Maintaining jaw bone long term. As teeth are lost, the jaw bone with time can regress or change impacting facial features such as the chin and lip. A regular denture rests on gum tissue that covers dental bone; often referred to as a dental ridge. With time, the ridge can resorb and cause changes to the fit of the denture, leading to relines or the use of dental adhesives. • Decrease use of denture adhesives. • Improve speech and enhance chewing. Leading to a better diet and overall health. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about implant supported dentures do not hesitate to contact Dr Jess Chhokar at Langdon Dental.

Smart snacking that can boost your fitness routine Eating right and exercising are the two most important elements of a healthy lifestyle. We hear it time and again that these simple principles hold more power than the latest fad diet, and for those who heed the advice, the proof is in the results. However, it's not always easy to figure out what's really good for you in the process of building - or maintaining - a healthy body. There's no question about it: if you're exercising regularly, the food you eat should support your workout routine. Whether you're a casual visitor to the gym three times a week or training for your first 100-mile bike ride, proper nutrition is essential. That means paying attention to the nutrient content of the foods you're eating, as your body will use and demand them differently than if you were living a sedentary lifestyle. And don't be fooled - there are The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

lots of foods that are packed with sugar and calories, with no or few important nutrients, aimed at athletes. For fitness fanatics and newcomers alike, smart snacking options can provide an added boost of nutrients that the body needs even when you're on the go. Consider making a combination of these snacks a regular part of your routine.
Pistachios Not all nuts are the same, and studies are increasingly finding that these little green treats might just be an athlete's best friend. Pistachios are packed with nutrients that rank among the most important for optimal performance and health. They provide wholesome protein that is crucial for building and repairing muscle, in addition to gamma-tocopherol (a member of the vitamin E family) that has anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant nutrients, which can be sapped during intensive exercise. The healthy fats in pistachios, which are the "Official Snack" of the USA Water Polo Men's and Women's teams, are no threat to your workout results, either - in fact, they'll bolster your routine because they are a fuel for endurance.
Fruits and vegetables The USDA's new dietary guidelines make no bones about it - fruits and vegetables are an incredibly important part of a healthy diet. And for athletes, they're a great source of vitamins and minerals that are important when your body is subjected to the extra demands of exercise. Choosing fruits and vegetables over juices can also give you added fibre to keep your body healthy. Whether you pack fresh or dried fruits and veggies for your pre- or post-workout snack, you can be sure that you're giving your body the extra vitamins it needs for top performance.

Whole grains No, you don't need to carry a loaf of bread with you. Instead, look for small, portable bars that offer the multiple benefits of natural whole grains. They're yet another source of healthy fiber that can help keep you going and will keep you from feeling hungry again shortly after you've eaten. And because they're whole, these grains retain much of their vitamin content that your body craves. If you can find bars that incorporate honey, so much the better, as it is yet another great source of energy. Taking care of your body will help it serve you well over the years, whether you're a student athlete, an active senior or anywhere in between. To do so, keep in mind that fitness and nutrition always go hand in hand and you'll be able to get the results you really want.

Bathing Suit Shopping I have just been through the annual pilgrimage of torture and humiliation known as buying a bathing suit.

A good life is when you smile often, dream big, laugh lots and realize how blessed you are for what you already have!
Back in the 1940's and 1950's, the bathing suits for women with a mature figure were designed for women with a mature figure - boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift and they did a good job. Today's stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure carved from a potato chip. The mature woman has a choice - she can either front up at the maternity department and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus who escaped from Disney's Fantasia - or she can wander around every run-of-the-mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluorescent rubber bands. What choice did I have? I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room. The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The Lycra used in bathing costumes was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which give the added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you are protected from shark attacks. The reason for this is that any shark taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash. I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap in place, I gasped in horror - my bosom had disappeared! Eventually, I found one bosom cowering under my left armpit. It took a while to find the other. At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib. The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups. The mature woman is meant to wear her bosom spread across her chest like a speed bump. I realigned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full view assessment.

Limited Spots Available. *Walk-in’s Welcome, First Come First Serve Basis * The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately, it only fit those bits of me willing to stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom, and sides. I looked like a lump of play dough wearing undersized cling wrap. As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent sales girl popped her head through the curtains. "Oh, there you are!" she said, admiring the bathing suit...I replied that I wasn't so sure and asked what else she had to show me. I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape, and a floral two-piece that gave the appearance of an oversized napkin in a serviette ring. I struggled into a pair of leopard skin bathers with ragged frill and came out looking like Tarzan's Jane pregnant with triplets and having a rough day. I tried on a black number with a midriff and looked like a jellyfish in mourning. I tried on a bright pink pair with such a high cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear them. Finally, I found a suit that fit...a two-piece affair with shorts style bottom and a loose blouse-type top. It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge friendly, so I bought it. When I got home, I read the label which said "Material may become transparent in water." I'm determined to wear it anyway.... I'll just have to learn to do the breaststroke in the sand. Any Canadian child of the 80s knows Fred Penner. The opening tune of guitar and Jews Harp while he runs through the forest and through the log to his hidden play area was a staple in our young lives. So when the Strathmore Musical Arts Society contacted the Newsy Neighbour Magazine to help sponsor Fred’s concert at Hope Community Church in Strathmore, we jumped at the chance. I may have school-girled and told Mr. Penner how often we watched his show and loved Word Bird and taught his Sandwiches song to my own children, and I’m not even embarrassed. The concert was fantastic and at a perfect venue. Kids cheered when The Cat Came Back started and were equally impressed when Mr. Penner sang songs in French. Thank you, Strathmore Musical Arts Society for bringing Fred Penner to Strathmore! We can’t wait for what else you’ll be doing for our community. 26 •

The snow is melting and I am enjoying my time outdoors, smelling the perimeter of the backyard and peeing on my long-lost fence. Unfortunately, the spring thaw brings about some things I do NOT like. Namely, wet, muddy paws. I do not like being dirty. I do not like stepping in mud, and I go out of my way to walk around puddles and muddy lawns. But the dummy who tries to snuggle with me, Stella, just loooooves to walk through everything muddy. She lays in the mud, she purposely walks through soaked lawns, she sticks her head in little mouse holes. Then she comes back, FILTHY. I do not like it, and try to stay away from her, but she just (for some reason) loves to pull me into the muddy lawn, or jumps on me, making me all muddy, or tells me how great something smells so I go smell it too, unknowingly getting filthy. I am very unhappy with all of this! I have had more baths the past 2 weeks than I have had ever in my life. I do not like baths. He dummy, Stella, has had about 5 times more baths than I have, and she appears to love them. She also does things in order TO have a bath; like getting head-to-tail filthy just by going into the backyard.

Tips to Protect Children from Harm
It is important to ensure you are well aware of people who has contact with your children – friends, family members, acquaintances and caregivers. Make sure these individuals respect your wishes for your children, and that your children know you are alert to their safety needs. 1. Help children learn clear boundaries and be consistent in protecting them. Let your children know it is ok to refuse to comply with a request from someone if they don’t feel comfortable. If that person persists with your child, help your children with the skills to leave the situation and seek help from someone they trust. 2. Talk with your children about ‘safe strangers’ and ‘safe places’. Store clerks with names tags, customer service desks, parents with strollers are all options for children if they feel scared and uncomfortable in public settings. 3. Ensure you respect your child’s boundaries in play, teasing and affection. If a child expresses or shows discomfort in some way, let them know you see it and immediately change your interaction. These brief moments are the teachable ones that have significant impact. 4. Let children know that touch, problems, games and presents should never be secrets. Help your child understand that it is never ok to keep a secret at the request of another adult, older child, or teenager. Remind them to speak with you about any interaction that doesn’t feel comfortable or safe. 5. Teach safety skills in a calm, conversational type manner. Make safety stories part of a regular conversation you have with your children. Questions like: ‘what would

Call for a tour 403-975-0103 you do if…” are great conversation starters. Ensure you have these conversations regularly and be sure to answer any questions or concerns they have. 6. Use proper names for body parts. When children know and use the appropriate body terminology, they tend to develop a more positive self-image and see all their parts with respect. We don’t have nicknames for a nose or elbow, nor should we for a penis or vagina. 7. Teach children to keep private body parts private. Help children to understand the difference between a doctor’s examination of their body and that of a potential offender. Help them to know you are with them in a doctor’s office to protect them and help them to feel comfortable. And that it is never a secret. Anyone else who may want to touch them, is never allowed. 8. Talk with your children about intuition as their body’s alarm system. In the same way a fire alarm alerts people to danger, our body has an internal alarm that alerts us to danger and harmful situations. Help your child think of times when they have felt scared or unsafe, where they sensed that in their bodies, and what they did to fix it. 9. Help your child develop a safety plan. Talk with your children about getting away from an uncomfortable situation, and getting to safety. Let them know its ok to scream and run, and find someone to help them. Children sometimes need permission to remove themselves from a situation that causes them discomfort – too often they stay longer than they should. 10. Teach your child the SuperHero Walk. Have your child practice walking with confidence – like their favourite SuperHero. It helps your child feel strong and in charge of their bodies, and sends a clear signal to others that they are not an easy target. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Construction Choices
"Your life is the result of the choices you make… if you don’t like your life, it is time to start making better choices.” ~Petia Kolibova September long-weekend. Just after midnight. Air crisp and cool. Neighbours and strangers scattered along the street. Emergency vehicles lighting up the houses like it was Christmas. Standing in my pajamas with my best friend by my side. We all had our eyes on my home, watching flames dance across the roof, smoke billowing high into the air. This was the beginning of 16 months of choices, but in that moment, all I knew was that in an instant, my life had changed. Although only the roof of my home had been consumed by fire, the water and smoke damage inside was extensive and my home was taken back to the studs and rebuilt. Within days of the fire, I was tasked with deciding on finishes for my entire home. All the lighting, plumbing fixtures, wall colours, cabinets, windows, doors, flooring, tile, interior doors, mirrors, hardware, railings, appliances, window treatments and more. Close to 1,000 individual house contents were discarded and had to be shopped for, repurchased, and re30 •

ceipts itemized and submitted. Anyone who has ever built a home will understand the thousands and thousands of decisions were needed to create the finished product. Each decision impacted other decisions. For example, the finish of the light fixtures determined the colour of the cabinet pulls, and the style of cabinets determined the stain for the hardwood floor. Wall colours determined the art work and the kitchen backsplash influenced the upholstery choices for the living room furniture. The end result was a finished home that is a representation of who I am today. Will it stay exactly the same? Not likely. As my personal life changes or I discover new design techniques, I may repaint walls and replace furniture. As I transform, my home will naturally reflect this. This is much like life and how we construct ourselves as individuals. Every day we make decisions. Some are big life-decisions while others are small daily decisions that are automatic and require little thought, and most are in between. Each decision we make helps shape the person we are and the person we are becoming. Life truly is a series of choices. Even when life seems to be happening ‘to’ us, we best serve ourselves by remembering that life happens ‘for’ us. We get to choose how we respond to our life experiences, to how people behave around us and to the thoughts and reactions we have. Life is about choice and what we choose will determine the design of our lives. Does it help to have some direction, mentors and tools along the way? Of course. Those things are available through our family, friends, programs and other sources of insight and support. Choice was the unofficial theme at the most recent Women Talk in Strathmore as women shared stories and gave inspiring perspectives on how their choices, and the choices of others, have directly impacted their lives. One woman spoke about having given up her dream for the sake of living someone else’s dream, and the years that followed of how she felt unfulfilled. She encourage us to not settle in life but to focus on our dreams and let the ‘how’ look after itself. Another woman Talker told us about her years of trading one addiction for another, always thinking she was doing well but The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Living Garbage

Recently, I hopped in a Taxi and we took off for the Airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car pulled right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started cursing at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly to him. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? That guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is when my Taxi driver taught me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck.” He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of Garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment, they are playing the victim and letting it get the best of them. As their Garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. He said, “Don’t take it personally.” Just smile, wave, wish them well and move on!! Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that stress free people do not let garbage trucks take over their day!

I remember the early 80s when I was an unemployed single parent with two young children. We lived in an old house in NW Calgary. When a friend came to help with a maintenance issue, he offered me a book of matches indicating burning it down would probably be the best solution. Facing 16 - 21% mortgages, a scarcity of jobs and money, and a declined housing market, I watched as friends and acquaintances simply walk away from their investment. They moved to rentals, shared accommodation and even out of the province to provide for their family. However, more of us stayed and found our way through. Bartering became a big part of our lives. One friend picked bottles with her infant children to subsidize the household income from her husband's full-time job and her part-time position. Another sold doors and windows door to door. My children shared a room enabling me to take in first one boarder, and later another one with an infant child. Eventually, I turned the house over to the kids' father without any exchange of funds as the market value had fallen well below our purchase price and mortgage. MOVING FORWARD Working again was terrific. Volunteering for a nonprofit organization had led to part-time employment and eventually to a full-time position. I applied for subsidized housing and qualified. I still remember the joy of moving in. As my friends carried boxes into the new dwelling and asked where to take them, I was thrilled to reply, "Downstairs in the basement." I was almost dancing. My old house had not even had a crawl space. Time doesn't stand still and I didn't give up. I focused on what I could do to take advantage of opportunities and face challenges. Unemployment was revisited, once voluntarily. Each time I do not remember blaming anyone, including myself or the government, for the situations I found myself facing. Consequently, my experience, skills, and network grew. THE POWER OF GENERATIONAL NETWORKS Currently, five generations with different backgrounds, skills, and experience are seeking ways to coexist in a workplace embracing rapid technological advancement. Further, it is important to remember, the future Gen 2020 (those born after 1995) will experience is much different than that of its predecessors. Some of them will be voting for the first time this election. Millennials and Gen2020 form the majority of approximately 51% of eligible Albertan voters. Their world view, experience, expectations, and values are significantly different from those of the Boomer and GenXer. 7 Fire Safety Tips for Cooking Many homeowners plan on having friends and family over during the holidays for dinner. If this is the case for you, then odds are you'll be preparing a feast that's a little more elaborate than what you typically make - especially if you are cooking for a large group of guests. One of the things that you should keep in mind as you go about this challenging task is fire safety. Almost half of all residential fires are caused by cooking accidents, after all. The following are seven kitchen fire safety tips that will help you reduce the risk of an accidental kitchen fire during the upcoming holidays:
1. Make sure the smoke alarm and CO detector both work
You should have a smoke alarm and a CO detector on the first floor near your kitchen. This way if a fire does break out, everyone in the house will be warned and have enough time to get out. Test both the alarm and the detector to make sure they work as they should and replace their batteries if needed.
2. Have easy access to a fire extinguisher
Since your kitchen does use heat extensively to cook food, you'll want to have easy access to a fire extinguisher in case something accidentally lights on fire. Cooking accidents can happen even if you think you're being careful - so be prepared.
3. Never leave the stove top on unattended
If you're cooking food on the stove, then you should never leave it unattended. If you need to leave the kitchen for a moment, have an adult come keep an eye on the food. During
the holidays, you may have kids running around as well - you'll want to make sure they don't enter the kitchen if there's food on the stove top without the supervision of an adult.
4. Don't wear loose clothing
Loose clothing can easily catch fire - especially if you have multiple foods being cooked on your stove top. Always make sure you're dressed appropriately for the kitchen.
5. Keep the kids away
Tell the kids to keep at least three feet away from the stove. Even if you're present or another adult is present, a child could seriously hurt themselves if they knocked over a frying pan or a pot full of hot food. Kids are also inherently curious, and the last thing you want is for them to accidentally start a fire because they were playing with the knobs on your stove top.
6. Keep flammable objects away from the stove top
When using the stove, make sure the counter space around it is clear. Accidental fires happen all the time because paper towels, oven mitts or other flammable objects were laying too close to the open flame of a stove top.
7. Make sure you clean your cooking surfaces
Grease fires often occur because of a buildup of grease and food on the cooking surface. Clean your cooking surfaces regularly to avoid this. The kitchen can be an overwhelming place to work during the holidays, so make sure that you keep these seven kitchen fire safety tips in mind. Article Provided by SafeBlu in Strathmor

HOME SECTION 5 Features to Look for in a Forever Home It's easy to find information about buying a "starter home," but what about when you want to find your forever home? A forever home is one your family can grow up in and where you can spend your golden years safely and comfortably. Finding a forever home is different than searching for a starter home because you're investing for the foreseeable future. A forever home not only grows with you, it can accommodate your changing needs.

Accessible entry
When searching for a home where you can age in place, one of the first features you come to is the main entry. While having front steps to sit on during nice weather may appeal when you have a young family, they can be problematic as you age. A safer entry is one without steps that has some form of shelter from the elements. Benches to sit on both inside and outside the entry give you a place to rest and put down items when necessary. To make it easier to enter the home as you age, look for doors with lever handles instead of knobs. Lever handles are easy to install if the home doesn't already have them.

Spacious hallways
Just as you may not want to think about falling in your home, you probably don't want to think about the possibility of needing a wheelchair or walker. Although you may never need a wheelchair or walk, it's a good idea to find a home with spacious hallways suitable for a walker or a wheelchair. Wider hallways also allow room for the installation of railings that can make it easier to navigate your home safely through all stages of life.

Seating at appropriate height
Kitchen islands are attractive, functional, and a great place for seating for kids doing homework or adults working on tasks. However, higher seating can be challenging to use for older adults. A kitchen island with lower, table-height seating is a good alternative as is a kitchen with an area large enough for a kitchen table.

Reaching into those tricky corner cabinets may not seem difficult at first, but can become challenging if you experience reduced mobility as you age. A good solution to getting into those deep cabinets is a pullout rack or shelf that provides easy access to everything within. Deep drawers can fill up quickly with excessive clutter that can be dangerous to dig through. Tiered pullouts or separators in the drawers provide easier access and keep things organized. Additional beneficial kitchen features for an age-inplace home are cabinet and drawer pulls that are large and easy to grasp. These types of features are installable in existing kitchens, but it doesn't hurt to look for a home with them already installed.

A Note From Martin Shields... On March 19th, 2019, the Liberal government introduced their last budget before the next election. As expected, the government broke their 2015 election promise to balance the budget this year. The Prime Minister said in 2015 that his pledge to balance the budget by this year was “set in stone.” We now know that was not true. This year’s deficit alone will be 19.8 billion – that increases every Canadian citizen’s share of federal debt to over 19,000 dollars. The total spending committed to in the budget reaches $41 billion. This is yet more proof that the Liberals simply do not care about our nation’s fiscal health. They are addicted to spending your tax dollars at every turn. We can reach no other conclusion than that Justin Trudeau is trying to distract from the SNC Lavalin scandal by ramping up spending dramatically – and this will be the most expensive cover-up in Canadian history. The scandal has thrown the Trudeau government into complete chaos. Every week, new revelations have come to light that suggest the Prime Minister is attempting to cover-up his attempted political interference in a criminal prosecution. The Liberals shut down the Justice Committee’s investigation into the SNC Lavalin Affair, and the Prime Minister continues to refuse to fully waive solicitor-client privilege and cabinet confidence. We know that Jody Wilson-Raybould has more to say. We learned from media reports that former Minister Jane

Philpott knows something about the scandal that she can’t share with the Canadian public. It’s time for the Prime Minister to give up his attempt at a cover-up and come clean. Bagpipes I love this story. Lay down what's bothering you, breathe in the fresh air and LISTEN to this story. Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life. As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man. And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept; we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years." Apparently, I'm still lost... it's a man thing. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Light has a huge impact on every area of your home, from the kitchen to the kids’ rooms. It sets the ambiance, contributes to the design and aesthetics, and helps you to focus on tasks. You might not notice the lighting when it’s working right, but if you’ve ever tried to read in a dim room or cut veggies without task lighting, you know it’s something noticeable when it’s poor. Select the right window coverings to help achieve the right balance of light in your home. Beyond illuminating a room beautifully, natural light can improve your health, mood and well-being. With the right window treatments, you’ll be able to control sunlight streaming in while maintaining your privacy. Choose beautiful colours and textures to bring the space to life with soft, glowing illumination. All we need is one pair of work shoes and one pair of church shoes. Don't ask us what we're thinking. Men can think about nothing for hours. Don't try and be subtle, just say what's on your mind and be honest. We do stupid things. This will never change, so don't try to force it, just learn to live with it. Not all men like sports and cars. Don't try to get us to set our best friends up with your girlfriends. he wouldn't do it to me, and I won't do it to him. Don't try and find answers to what men want in magazines like Cosmo, just ask us. Don't be surprised if we don't know what we want. Hello Newsy Neighbours!
What is Alberta’s brand? When you think of your family, your neighbours, the businesses in your city, town, hamlet, or village, the amenities you enjoy, what do you see as Alberta’s brand? I read an amazing article this week-by Licia Corbella: “Brad Wall says Notley broke Alberta’s brand, but Kenney can fix it.” (https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/corbellabrad-wall-says-notley-broke-albertas-brand-but-kenneycan-fix-it ). Saskatchewan has seen a huge transformation under the Wall/Moe governments. Saskatchewan is pragmatic and is no longer a have-not province under its Conservative government. It became pro-business and upon reading the article, you will see a humble leader who gives credit to his province doing well to the very people he serves! We need to revitalize government and honour the businesses and people that have built this beautiful province of ours. On March 27, I spent the entire day with some of my friends meeting farm families and listening to their needs, and their frustrations. It was quite simple. It came down to morale. These folks love and build their communities, work with their neighbours, volunteer with the local boards, and community halls, or Lions, or Rotary Clubs. They build ball diamonds, fundraise for community gardens, teach their children to give back to their communities, and they are engaged in the politics of this very important election. The people of Chestermere-Strathmore are looking to elevate their communities, not divide them. They want strong leadership that sees these communities as independent and autonomous. They want to have strong relationships with their municipal governance so that they can build businesses, bring amenities such as recreations centers and transportation or be able to subdivide so that they can share their farm lands with their children and help their sons and daughters set up their own homesteads for future generations of farmers and those who raise livestock or run businesses that get our products to market. Brad Wall and Jason Kenney are two of those types of leaders that are bringing forward policy that obsesses over job creation and the economy. Policy that improves tax competitiveness, and backs it up with policies that look beyond election promises of billions of dollars in promises at a time when our fiscal outlook is difficult. We need leadership that will not only say they are going fight for pipelines, but will actually follow through. The previous government did not fight for you, did not use its tools to help our province and then piled on policies that scared away investors---billions of dollars from our province that could have gone to important programs and infrastructure. We want to have a job creation tax cut that could create 55,000 jobs as outlined by economists Jack Mintz and Bev Dahlby. We need red tape reduction that will hopefully to cut this burden by a third. We need to scrap the Carbon Tax— this will be Bill 1 if you honour us with forming the Government. This is not about nasty rhetoric towards another government, this is about building Alberta because we love Alberta and we love Canada.
“Highly Recommended by Local Builders”
Highest Warranty In The Business
We know how incredibly resilient and savvy Albertans are, and we have come out of recessions before. We need government that sees our potential instead of calling us names like “embarrassing cousins” or “sewer rats”. The Notley government is not responsible for the drop in oil prices, but instead of rallying behind Albertans, they dropped the ball and used activism instead of common sense. They do not have an economic record to run on so they have resorted to the incredibly divisive and negative campaign they are running. So what is Alberta’s Brand? We believe in family, and we believe in the strength of our communities and the autonomy of our municipalities. We believe in the quality of our resources, our responsible resource development, our agriculture, manufacturing, forestry, and small businesses. We love our pristine earth, air and water, and we care deeply about our environment. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opportunity to have represented you as your elected official for the past 4 years, and I look forward to earning your vote at the doors in the coming weeks. I believe that the key to unlocking Alberta’s potential is giving Albertans the freedom to do what they do best. Please go out and vote no matter who you vote for. It is such a privilege to live in a democracy and to have a voice. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Sometimes called horticulturalists, are the plant experts. A horticulturist goes one step beyond and knows the science behind different plants, flowers, and greenery. If your plants aren’t growing, your leaves are being eaten by pests, or you live in a particular climate for vegetation, you may want to work with a horticulturist.
Arborists
By definition, an arborist is an individual trained in the art and science of planting, caring for, and maintaining individual trees. 18 Things You Should Never Do To Your Lawn Whether you have a green thumb or not, it’s easy to maintain a blissful, barefoot-worthy backyard. For starters, avoid these 18 no-nos. Don’t Remove ALL Fallen Leaves Did you know that leaves are actually great for your lawn? Leaves have an organic matter in them that is great for your soil. It works as a natural fertilizer, helping your grass to grow the following year. According to Sam Bauer, a turfgrass researcher from the University of Minnesota, it can even suppress the growth of weeds as well. He recommends mulching the leaves by using a lawn mower (specifically with a specialized mulching blade, if you have one) over the leaves to cut them up. However, if you have huge piles of leaves on your lawn, it may be hard to mulch all at once (and yes, can smother your grass). Remove those piles until you have a good dusting of leaves around your lawn before mulching with your mower. Don’t Discount Compost Top-dress your lawn with high-quality compost. Compost can bring depleted or damaged soil back to life, resulting in stronger root systems and happier plants. One teaspoon of compost contains a billion beneficial microorganisms that help create better soil structure and texture, which improves nutrient, water and air retention. To apply compost, spread it over your lawn with a shov-
el, aiming for a layer 1/4 to 1/2 inches thick. Then work it into the turf with a rake. It’s best to do this after aerating. Most garden centers sell bagged compost. But to cover an entire yard, you’re better off buying in bulk from a garden center. Don’t worry about buying too much—any leftovers will benefit your garden and shrub beds. Build your own compost barrel. Don't Ignore Pet Areas Dog spots are round patches about 4 to 8 inches in diameter with dead grass in the middle, encircled by dark green grass. They're most apparent in the early spring when dormant grass first begins to turn green again. You have to replant your grass; it won't come back on its own. But first you have to dilute or remove the caustic urine from the soil. Thoroughly soak the area with lots of water. Don't Overfeed If you apply too much grass fertilizer, especially in sandy soils, a good share of it will leach through the soil and make its way into our precious groundwater, lakes, streams and wetlands. Lawn grasses only need a certain amount of food. More isn't always better. Don't Use Broadleaf Herbicides in Extreme Temperatures You need to kill weeds when they're growing. That's because the herbicide is absorbed through the leaves and then sent throughout the rest of the plant. When the weather is too cool, the weed isn't growing and the herbicide won't be absorbed, and the chemical isn't as effective. Too hot and the herbicide will stress the grass. The product directions will give you the best temperature range. Apply herbicides when rain isn't facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

forecasted; a soaking will just rinse off the herbicide before it can do any good. Don't Cut Wet Grass Mowing wet grass can cause the mower wheels to leave ruts in your yard, and you could leave behind giant clumps of clippings that could smother the grass beneath. And the wet grass will carpet the underside of your mower deck with a thick mat that's a pain to clean. Don't Mow in the Same Direction Every Time Instead, mow in a different direction every time: front to back, back to front, diagonal, etc. Repeatedly mowing the exact same way will cause the grass blades to grow at an angle, and you may develop permanent tracks from the mower wheels. Don't Cut Grass Too Short Every grass type has an optimal cutting height, and you're better off on the high side of that height. Here are a few reasons. The grass blade is the food factory of the plant. Short blades just can't generate as much food as long blades. Long blades also shade and cool the soil. That means weed seeds are less likely to sprout, and you won't have to water as often because water won't evaporate as fast. Not sure what type of grass you have? Take a sample to a garden center for identification.
Home Selling Tips Declutter inside and out! We have all seen the TV shows about Real Estate and decluttering, but is it really that necessary? In one word: YES!! It sets the stage for the next important detail. Organize documents! Tere is some very specific paperwork needed to sell your home. Titles, real property reports, mortgage details, permits, utility bill information, tax notices and assessments, blue prints, and listing contracts are just some of the documents that you'll need.

Don't Skip Reseeding Reseeding is a job you can do in a weekend if you have an average-size lawn. You'll have to wrestle home a couple of engine-powered rental machines. And once your work is done, be prepared to keep the soil damp with daily watering for the first month or so. It's the key to a successful reseeding job. Don't Wait Too Long Between Mowing If you came back from a vacation and the neighbour kid neglected to mow your yard, don't try and mow it down in one day. Cut off some of the length and then wait a couple days and mow again. This will cause less stress on the grass. You may need three passes depending on how long the grass grew. Don't Forget to Check Soil Moisture Common wisdom for establishing the correct length of time to water is to place a pie pan in the yard and note how long it takes to fill 1/2 inch deep. But experts prefer a more accurate method that takes soil conditions into account. Heavier soil doesn't absorb moisture nearly as fast as loose or sandy soil, so it needs to be watered longer. After an extended warm, dry period (dry soil is the key) set up your sprinkler and set a timer for 30 minutes. Then turn off the water and check the soil for moisture depth. Do this by pushing a shovel into the lawn and tipping it forward to expose the soil. See how deep the water has penetrated. Moist soil will be darker. Your goal is to run the sprinkler until the water penetrates 3 to 4 inches into the soil. If the water has not penetrated far enough, restart The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

the watering and continue to keep track of the time. Check again in another 15 minutes. With trial and error, you'll eventually arrive at the optimal length of time to water for your soil type and water pressure.
Sticky's Maintenance Services
Don't Fertilize Shady Areas More People tend to overapply fertilizer to shady areas because the grass is struggling. But that just kills it faster!
• Commercial, Residential & Condos • Spring & Fall Clean-ups • Lawn Maintenance
Many people really have two lawns—a lawn that gets full sun for most of the day, and a shaded lawn that may get only two to four hours of direct sun—and their water and fertilizer needs are different. The grass in shady areas needs less water because less evaporates, and it needs less fertilizer because with less sun it doesn't grow as much. When you go into shade, shift the controls on the spreader so you're spreading about half the amount. Don't Give Up on Shady Areas Growing grass under shade trees isn't easy, but one key to success is choosing the right shade grass species and planting method for your region. In cool-season areas, you'll get a better result using seed rather than sod. Sod is grown in wide-open fields under conditions that favour sun-loving grasses. Choose red and tall fescues for shady areas in Northern zones. Garden centers will have grass seed mixes formulated for shade. Late summer and mid-spring are the best times to establish cool-season grasses in shady areas. Don't Forget to Dethatch Thatch is a layer of slowly decomposing grass stems, roots, clippings and debris that accumulate at the soil surface over time. It can build up in your lawn and virtually choke it to death. Excessive thatch buildup is commonly found in lawns that have been overfertilized or overwatered and have never been aerated. Thatch buildup of 3/4 inches or more will restrict water and nutrient penetration into the soil (think thatched roof) and can harbour disease organisms that can increase the need for pesticides. Slice open a section of turf. If the thatch is more than 3/4 inches thick, take action. Don't Water Every Day Did you know your lawn can actually get dependent and needy if it has too much water? Instead of watering every day for 15 minutes, choose one day a week to water the lawn for an entire hour. Your lawn will be watered deeply, and it will be healthier and more drought-tolerant. Don't Use a Dull Mower Blade Dull mower blades rip through the grass blades instead of slicing them cleanly, and that stresses the plant. You can always tell a lawn that's been mowed with a dull blade because it looks brown on the top. Get on your hands and knees and you can actually see the damage. Be sure to sharpen your mower blade each season to keep your lawn in good shape. Don't Skip Aerating Most lawns, whether seeded or sodded, are planted over a fairly skimpy layer of topsoil. Over time, lawn mowers, pets and pick-up football games compact

the soil, making it difficult for air, water and vital nutrients to penetrate to the grass roots. Your challenge: to restore healthy soil conditions that nurture your lawn. To loosen and aerate the soil, rent a power core aerator. They're available at rental centers, plus some hardware stores and garden centers. Don't Remove Grass Clippings Leaving grass clippings on the lawn after you mow can cause thatch problems, right? Nope! That's a myth. Turns out, grass clippings can actually help with the overall health of your lawn. And (bonus!) that means less work for you when you mow. Article provided by Sticky's Maintenance Services

Do you have a plan for renovating your home? Do you have a budget or have you ever priced out how much it would cost to replace flooring or paint a room or the whole house; what about replacing the roof, appliances or building a fence? Your house is like your body – it does need constant care and upgrading. In this day of credit cards, it certainly makes life a lot easier if your hot water tank gives out – just go to the store, finance it for the next year and make the minimum payment for as long as you can get away with it. It is important that you look after your home, especially these days when people are depending on selling their property for their retirement. They plan on using the eq-
uity in their home to live on when the time comes that they can no longer look after themselves and have not put enough aside over the years to have a little nest egg for retirement. Statistics have shown that at least 24% of all Canadians rely on their homes for their retirement. It appears many people are eyeing their homes' market value as a store of potential income after they stop working. There are also those people who do not own a home, have not been wise enough to have personal savings, and will be relying upon the government as their main source of income. Personally, we are working very hard to try to have our full mortgage paid off by the time we retire and there are many different ways in which to do this. We have our payment plan on a weekly term and we have increased the amount of the weekly payment. You also always have the option to make a lump sum payment once a year (the percentages change from bank to bank). All these are great ideas and not only do you save yourself a pile of interest, you can have your home paid off years earlier. This brings me back to the beginning of this article and the importance of maintaining your home, especially if you are one of those Canadians who plans on using their home equity as the main source of income in your retirement years.
Home Selling Tips Arrange furniture to showcase your space. Remove extra, unwanted furniture and arrange remaining pieces in a way that creates smooth traffic flow. Good furniture placement can help show off a room and makes a huge impact as a buyer walks through
Do all you can to reduce odors. People never forget smells when they walk in the door. Try your best to remove odors caused by pets, smoking and cooking. Nothing is worse than a smelly home, so make it fresh! 46 •
