Currently there is a limited time offer for this equity membership for only $6000.00. This purchases a full equity share in the golf club and as a special bonus, right now you will receive a $7500 credit which is used to purchase annual dues for the Principal member and any family members who wish to become members as well! Glenn Carr, Director of Golf, who has 39 years of golf course experience, says, “Since Lakeside opened in 1991, we’ve worked hard to treat our members like family.” I can attest to that, as I drove around the course with PGA Head Professional Tom Lee, who waved and greeted smiling golfers by name as we drove through the course. “We have a great team here,” says Carr. “We are continually working to bring a positive experience for everyone.” Their restaurant has been leased out for the past few years, but Lakeside has recently taken over the club house restaurant, The Rusty Putter Grill. The restaurant is open daily to both the public and golfers alike, with menu items ready to appease any appetite from burgers to salads, to steak and pastas. A special feature is the Family Pasta Night every Friday

evening from 5-9 PM; make sure to bring the whole family!!They also have an all-day breakfast and a kids and seniors menu! Sit in the clubhouse or on the patio, overlooking the beauti ful, unparalleled views of the first and second holes. Consider Lakeside Golf Club for your wedding or corporate functions; they have a beautiful banquet room that seats up to 200 people. The Club offers full catering, and your wedding photos will be second to none with the beautiful landscape. Not to mention, the course would be the perfect setting for your corporate Christmas party! Lakeside Golf Club is an integral part of the City of Chestermere, and they do their best to support the community. “We take our role in the community very seriously and try to support as many endeavors as we can throughout the year.” adds Carr. “We pride ourselves on our great relationship with the City of Chestermere!” Come check out Chestermere and Calgary’s fastest growing premier golf facility! Well run, well maintained. Love having this course in my community. The restaurant upstairs is a hidden gem in Chestermere. – Andrew L.

PUBLISHERS LETTER:

Editor-In-Chief / Art Director / Publisher Personal Relations

Have you ever had one of those “Ah-ha” moments? When the light bulb goes on in your head and you think to yourself, oh my goodness why did it take so long for me to realize I had the answer all along? Why do we battle through life, so involved in ourselves that we never notice the life and beauty all around us? This August Issue, will take you to a place that looks back on your life and helps you realize how wonderful your life really is. They say, “Happiness is a learned skill” and the more we shift our focus on what we like versus what we do not like, what we have versus what we do not have, the landscape of our brain begins to change as we wire in new neural pathways and begin to see life completely different.

What I like about camping is you can get really dirty. Either you're all by yourself, so no one else sees you, or everyone you're with is just as dirty as you are, so nobody cares. ~Anonymous

WHAT TO BRING ON A CAMPING TRIP With any luck, each camping trip proves to be a unique experience. There are many wonderful things that nature has to offer. But, no matter where you’re headed, a few things should always come with you. Below is the “short list” of camping essentials that should always be packed. • A tent, tarp, and sleeping bag – as well as a tent repair kit • A pot, pan, dishes, utensils, and fire-starting materials (preferably waterproof matches or a butane lighter) • A utility knife and length of rope • Plenty of water (get gallon sizes for cooking and cleaning) • Energy rich, easily prepared foods and snacks (think items like pasta, beans, ground beef, peanut butter, chicken, trail mix, and oatmeal). Do not forget the can opener if you have canned food • Plenty of clothing (a good rule of thumb in temperate areas is enough for two to three layers daily) • A tight-closing cooler to store your food items in • Hand sanitizer and biodegradable soap (wet wipes are always needed – especially after using an outhouse) • Optionally, outdoor gear like fishing poles and hiking equipment • Garbage bags (do not litter!) • Flashlights and/or lanterns (with extra batteries) • First Aid Kit, complete with a whistle and bear spray • Mosquito repellant and sunscreen

Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong. ~George Carlin

Q. My dog panics every time there is a thunderstorm. What can I do to help him? This is a very common question during the summer months. Some dogs will become extremely stressed, even before the storm appears, due to changes in barometric pressure and humidity levels. Signs of anxiety may include panting, pacing, finding places to hide, attention seeking, whining, or even defecating and urinating inappropriately. Before jumping to a sedative, we like to try other options first. For starters, always monitor your own reactions during a thunderstorm, any human anxiety or fear can be sensed by your pets and passed onto them. Avoid paying special attention to your dog, and instead be positive and upbeat while going about your normal routine. Playing a game with your pet to keep him or her preoccupied may be beneficial. A nice option is a relatively new product on the market called a “Thundershirt” and has shown great promise in these anxious dogs (and cats too!). This shirt provides constant pressure to the dog’s torso, and the pressure has a calming effect – think of swaddling a baby, or providing your dog with a long lasting “hug”. Seems too simple to work, however our clients and staff have had great success with this shirt- and it’s drug free! Another product available that helps manage stress-related behaviours in dogs is the “Adaptil” Collar, Adaptil Spray, or the Adaptil Diffuser. It contains canine appeasing pheromone analogue, or a “happy dog” pheromone that can help to reduce stress. Creating a space for your pet to go during the storm that is comfortable and quiet, infused with the Adaptil pheromone will often be enough to take away the anxiety he or she is experiencing. If none of these products are adequate, visit your veterinarian for further options regarding anti-anxiety medications, or possibly a visit to an animal behaviourist. Do you have a question for the vet? Ask Dr. Rand Davis at the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore.

NEXT LEVEL

If you are of the opinion that food tastes better outside and that anything with chocolate is heaven, you are most likely a fan of s'mores. That sticky stack of graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate has been a favourite of generations of campers. While there is nothing like a good old classic, consider these ways to take your s'mores game to the next level.

Candy S'mores Give the traditional s'more a delicious twist. Instead of putting a piece of chocolate between the graham crackers, mix it up with your favourite chocolate candy. Peanut butter cups make a delicious, nutty treat. Peppermint patties add a refreshing spin on the s'more. Substitute a Kit Kat for the chocolate to get a crunchy, gooey indulgence.

Orange S'mores Orange and chocolate flavours complement each other well, and you can use this to your advantage when turning your s'more expectations upside down. Cut a fresh orange in half and scoop out the fruit. Put some chocolate squares in the bottom of the hollow rind and top it with marshmallows. Crumble graham crackers on top, and put it over your campfire or in the oven until the marshmallows are as gooey as you like. Grab a spoon and enjoy your orange infused s'more cup.

S'mores Dip S'mores aren't exactly a “neat and tidy” food. By the time you are on your second s'more, you are often sticky all over. You can get all of the yumminess with less of the mess by making your s'mores dippable. Simply fill the bottom of an 8-inch pan with chocolate squares, and layer

The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

marshmallows over the top. Bake in the oven until the tops of the marshmallows are golden brown. Grab a handful of graham crackers and dip in.

Chocolate Chip S'mores For a truly delicious treat, ditch the graham crackers, and pull out the big guns. Chocolate chip cookies will take your s'mores to an entirely different plane of deliciousness. Make the s'mores as you normally would, except cap the ends with everyone's favourite cookie. It makes the s'more softer and far more decadent.

At Coldwell, we are real people serving real people. We’re committed to you and your family’s PEACE OF MIND.

Dougnut S'mores If you want s'mores that push the indulgence meter to its limits, try using dougnuts as a substitute for the graham crackers. A pair of glazed donuts stuffed with marshmallows and chocolate is so good it should be illegal.

Deep Fried S'mores If you love s'mores but just think they are too healthy, pull out the deep fryer. A battered and fried s'more is a confection worthy of any carnival or street fair.

S'more Kabobs It seems to have become the fashion among foodies to offer traditional dishes deconstructed. You can get in on this trend by separating the s'more into its basic elements and putting them on a stick. Grab a metal skewer and load it up with chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers. You may have to use different types of chocolate and graham crackers to see what works best on your kabob.

S'more Fondue Since the fondue craze of the mid-20th century, chocolate lovers everywhere have been dipping their marshmallows. You can make your own s'more fondue by melting chocolate on the stove or in the microwave and dipping a fork-speared marshmallow into the sweet liquid. Now that you know how to elevate your s'mores to the next level, wipe the drool off of your mouth, and head to the market to pick up some ingredients. These recipes may all become new favourites. I hope you enjoyed the Stampede, which, in spite of the weather, was great fun. Fortunately, the big event in Chestermere, the CBRE/Melcor Stampede BBQ, went off with no rain and I had the opportunity to greet many of you. As I write this, I am gearing up to volunteer Friday evening at Langdon Days (garbage duty at the beer gardens). The weather forecast looks great! Langdon Days has been an institution for over 25 years and would not be possible without a small army of volunteers so if you see one, thank them! If you are one, thank you! And if you attended, please consider volunteering next year. Volunteers are the heart of your community. I hope you enjoyed our entry in the parade. This is our second year participating. The beautiful horses and wagon were supplied by my friend Verne Kemble and his partner Connie of Little Edgewater Ranch in Indus. I have known Verne since not long after I moved to Chestermere in 1979. Verne and Connie’s passion is horses. I am sure many of you have seen them at Pioneer Acres demonstrating old time farming techniques or enjoyed riding in one of their beautiful wagons at various events.

The Premier has just announced members of her NDP government’s Oil Sands Advisory Group. One of the co-chairs is Tzeporah Berman. Ms. Berman is one of the founding signatories of the NDPs radical Leap Manifesto. Let’s see… they advocate for an end to resource extraction, no new pipelines, an end to free trade, and massive tax increases,

among other things. She has called the Oil Sands “Mordor”, “tar sands”, and “dirty”. Why would the Premier appoint someone to chair this group who is on record as favouring a shutdown of the industry that is one of the pillars of our economy? We rely on the production and sale of our resources. Our energy industry is down 100,000 jobs and faced with an ideologically driven government that is hurting competitiveness. Where does the Premier think the money for health care, education, and other services Albertans need comes from? Is the best person she can find as co-chair of this group someone who wants to see our resources stay in the ground? What are the people who are proud to work in the energy sector supposed to think? Are their jobs somehow ‘dirty” and not worth preserving? Would you put money into an industry when the government’s appointed advisors want it shut down? These are serious questions and Albertans deserve an honest answer from the government, not more multi-million (borrowed) dollar advertising campaigns. Please tell us what you think, we love to hear from you.

I AM A ...

SUNFLOWER SEED You may not think that there is much to know about me; I seem to be quite common, but I am quite the globe trotter. My story starts in the pre-European Americas to Tsarist Russia and back again. My story has the historical and continental sweep of a Hollywood epic. In the beginning it was the Cherokee and other Native Americans who began to farm sunflowers. I was an important part of their diet as a good source of fat, which hunter gatherer societies needed to supplement the lean meat they ate. Down south in Mexico, the Aztecs were also cultivating my ancestors but they also worshipped us. In their temples to the sun, the priestesses would wear headdresses made of my beautiful leaves to give themselves the air of the divine. Now my story gets interesting, you see not long after the discovery of the New World by the Europeans, they saw the benefit of transporting seeds across the Atlantic and beyond. It is thought that my first seeds arrived in the Old World (to Spain) around the beginning of the sixteenth century, because of my wonderful size and beauty (I was considered very exotic) I was used mostly as an ornamental plant. It was not until the eighteenth century that I gained huge popularity as a cultivated plant and the person we have to thank for that is perhaps not the first who might spring to mind. Peter the Great of Russia went on one of his many trips and landed in Holland. There, he became so enamored with us that he took seeds back to Russia. During Lent, the Russian Orthodox Church forbade its adherents from consuming oil. However, the oil of the sunflower was not on the prohibited list and the Russian people jumped on Peter’s bandwagon wholeheartedly. By the third decade of the nineteenth century, sunflower oil was manufactured in Russia on a large and highly lucrative commercial scale. Russia was growing over two million acres a year. The government even invested money in to what we now call research projects and one scientist, VS Pustovoit was the originator of the most successful breeding project, the “Mammoth Russian Sunflower”. So, by 1830 it was time for us to make our triumphant return to the Americas. You see Russian immigrants to the US and Canada took our seeds with them and by the 1880s companies were offering the ‘Mammoth Russian’ in their catalogues.

There you have it, the ancient hunter gatherers started our journey of travels; they should be proud of their first and earliest contribution to my fascinating tale. I may be pretty but there is so much more you don’t know about me and you will be dazzled with my health benefits. Just a scant handful of my little seeds can dramatically improve the way you feel. I can control cell damage, thus playing a role in preventing cancer. This is because I am a good source of selenium, a trace mineral that is of fundamental importance to human health. Accumulated evidence from prospective studies, intervention trials and studies on animal models of cancer has suggested a strong inverse correlation between selenium intake and cancer incidence. Selenium has been shown to induce DNA repair and synthesis in damaged cells, to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells, and to induce their apoptosis, the self-destruct sequence the body uses to eliminate worn out or abnormal cells. I contain bone-healthy minerals. Besides calcium, your bones need magnesium and copper to stay strong. Numerous studies have demonstrated that magnesium helps reduce the severity of asthma, lower high blood pressure, and prevent migraine headaches, as well as reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. My magnesium is also is reputed for soothing the nerves, thus easing away stress, and helping you relax. As a bonus I contain Vitamin E which combats UV rays and keeps skin youthful. Vitamin E travels throughout the body, neutralizing free radicals that would otherwise damage fat-containing structures and molecules, such as cell membranes, brain cells, and cholesterol. By protecting these cellular and molecular components, vitamin E has significant anti-inflammatory effects that result in the reduction of symptoms in asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, conditions where free radicals and inflammation play a big role. AND, I’m loaded with antioxidants. Just ¼ cup of sunflower seeds a day can keep heart troubles away. I disallow ‘bad’ cholesterol from sticking to the walls of your arteries, thus preventing heart attacks.

7.41 x 9.91

I am crunchy and have a delectable nutty flavour, you can easily make me a regular part of your daily diet. Sprinkle me on your salads, granola or in your stir-fries. Stir me into yogurt, add me to your sandwiches, rice, pasta or knead me into your dough…the possibilities are endless! Put me into your favourite tuna, chicken or turkey salad recipe. Sprinkle me into scrambled eggs or even into your pancakes. I will give anything you eat a unique, healthy taste and texture. I’m the BEST!

and if nothing else, it is an amazing goal to strive for. Walking is the easiest way to achieve this goal. Walking gives you the freedom to choose where and when you want to go, and all at your own pace. Walking allows you the independence to freely go about your lives and do what needs to be done without depending on anyone. We have known a few people that have lost a foot or a leg due to diabetes, and they will certainly say that the world is a different place without us. Most people take us for granted until we are no longer there. And then, viola, life changes… never to be the same again. It is very important for people with diabetes to follow a few basic and simple rules when walking, running, jogging or doing any type of exercise.

We Offer Botox

BEFORE EXERCISING

- Wear clean socks - Wear good quality shoes that are specifically made for the type of exercise or activity you are doing. - Take time to warm up. - Stretch slowly.

AFTER EXERCISING

General Practice Family Dentist

- Cool Down. - Stretch. - Inspect your feet for redness, swelling, blisters, corns or callus buildup. - If you experience any pain and are unable to figure out what the problem is, or fix it, see your physician or foot care specialist immediately. Other beneficial and highly recommended exercises for diabetics are:

We offer digital imaging, intra-oral camera, patient education systems, general practice IV sedation, oral sedation and nitrous sedation, chairside computers, quiet electric handpieces.

Hello, this is Roger! Happy August. It is amazing how quickly our summer is flying by. It feels way too early to say that we may have frost anytime

in the next month. Larry is taking some time to study our new toy, and has asked me to talk this month. Although we are not super big on the techy front, we got something that is supposed to be life changing: a Fitbit. It has been so rewarding to be focusing on our health and seeing and feeling the changes of being active. Some of the greatest exercises that are recommended for diabetics are walking, jogging, biking, and stairclimbing. All of these activities, it appears, can be tracked by your Fitbit. It is an amazing little toy, for absolute certain. We are looking forward to strapping it on and getting down to business. Apparently, ten thousand steps a day is what your goal should be for a healthy lifestyle. This equates to about 4.5 miles per day. This is doable for most of us,

THE KNOWLEDGE TO KEEP THOSE POUNDS OFF FOREVER!

The Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method is a medically designed protocol that results in fat loss while sparing muscle mass. The Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method helps stabilize the pancreas and blood sugar levels while burning fat and maintaining muscle and other lean tissue. What is the Source of Most Weight Issues? According to Dr. Tran Tien, “The cause of most weight issues in a modern society is insulin dysfunction. A diet grossly disproportionate in its share of saturated fats and sugars, such as in breads, cereals, muffins, cakes, pastries, pasta, pizza, rice, corn - very much like the North American diet - causes the pancreas to produce an overabundance of insulin, which stays in the system and puts the blood sugar level in a negative balance.” An overproduction of insulin also leads to hypoglycemia or low glycaemia, which in turn induces constant sugar cravings and weight gain. Insulin’s primary function is to regulate blood sugar levels, however, it is also the hormone that facilitates the transport of fat (triglycerides) into the fat cells. Even worse, it “locks” the fat in the fat cell, preventing it to be used as a source of energy. Now, because the blood sugar has dropped (and we can’t access the fat as a fuel source) it creates “sugar cravings" and the vicious cycle begins again. In other words, an overabundance of insulin causes weight gain. The Ideal Protein protocol will transform the body’s ability to digest sugars properly by regulating insulin levels. How? By giving the pancreas a well-deserved break and by limiting simple and complex carbs until the weight loss goal is achieved. Principles behind the Protocol. Learn to live off of the body’s own fat reserves. The body employs energy from three reserves: glycogen (carbohydrate), protein and fats. First from its simple and complex carbohydrate reserves and when depleted, turns simultaneously to its protein and fat reserves for energy. A person not in need of weight loss typically has approximately 1-2% of their body’s reserves from carbs, approximately 19% from their muscle mass and 79% of their body reserves from fat. Simple and complex carbohydrates can prevent weight loss. The body stores approximately three days’ worth of carbohydrates. Because of this, the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method has a beginning and an end. Until 100% of the weight loss goal is achieved, we restrict sugars (simple and complex). Why? Because, as long as sugar is being consumed, the body is not burning fat. It’s as simple as that. Remember, the first source of energy is derived from glycogen (carbohydrate) reserves. The main principle is to deplete the glycogen (carbohydrate) reserves completely in order to compel the body to turn to its fat reserve to burn calories. How do we get the body to burn its fat reserves and not its muscle mass reserves, if both are depleted simultaneously? First, by providing the body with foods that have a high protein value, complete with 8 essential amino acids, 97% absorbable, which make them biologically-complete proteins. Secondly, by supplementing with nutrient-rich supplements such as Natura Multi-Vita, Natura Calcium & Magnesium and Natura Potassium, key ingredients in muscle building and electrolytes to replace those normally found in foods restricted on the Ideal Protein protocol. A dieter will feel energized, look vibrant and feel strong. It is no wonder. Given the opportunity for the body’s natural ability to heal itself and showcase its innate and ingenious powers, such as in the way during the protocol the body will return the favor with unparalleled force, radiance and beauty. We also offer a modified protocol for Type I diabetics, adolescents and children. Ideal Nutrition Centre. See ad on this page

The Top 8 Fitness Trends of 2016 By Dr. Rick Wallace Ph.D.

The fitness industry has developed into an immensely powerful industry from an economic perspective. A significant portion of the population has developed a proclivity to only think of training and fitness programs when the phrase "fitness trends" is mentioned; however, fitness trends can apply to apparel, training technology and more. For instance, wearable fitness is at an all-time high as far as popularity is concerned. There are literally hundreds of versions of fitness trackers currently on the market. While some of the trackers are basic, functioning as pedometers only, there are others that have the capacity to track workouts, calories, whether a person snores or not, sleep patterns and more. In addition to fitness trackers, there are a number of other fitness trends that are currently taking 2016 by storm. Following are the top 8 trends so far this year.

Wearable fitness technology has the capacity to help individuals get the most out of their workouts. Some examples of wearable technology include fitness trackers and smart watches, such as Garmin, Fitbit and Apple Watch. These devices are equipped with heart rate monitors, GPS tracking, sleep pattern monitoring, and calorie counters, just to name a few features. Wearable technology can help track, compile and analyze valuable fitness data in order to ensure that individuals are able to maximize their fitness programs.

2. Body Weight Training Due to the fact that many people are limited by busy schedules that can make it immensely difficult for them to make it to the gym on a consistent basis, body weight training techniques are growing in popularity. Body weight training is also great for those individuals who may be recovering from joint injuries.

thenewsyneighbour.com

3. High-Intensity Interval Training HIIT has really taken off over the last several years, primarily due to its extraordinary success. This type of training involves intense bursts of activity executed over a relatively short period of time, like a minute or less per cycle. A complete HIIT workout will only last about 30 minutes or so, and is generally comprised of exercises like sprinting, pushups, squatting and burpees. HIIT training programs generally offer a dual benefit that includes aerobic and anaerobic enhancements.

4. Strength Training

1. Wearable Fitness Technology

While body weight training is considered an old school training modality, it is still exceptionally effective. It involves a person using their own weight to create the training resistance for their workout. Some exercises that fall into this category include pushups, sit ups, pull-ups, and lunges. When these types of exercises are performed consistently and correctly, they can be highly effective -- especially in the areas of burning fat and building muscle.

Strength training is a form of physical exercise that involves the use of significant resistance, normally provided by weights. These types of training programs help to build strength, build muscle and increase flexibility. Strength training is one of the more common workouts witnessed at the average gym.

5. The Use of Educated and Experienced Professionals More and more people are choosing to hire fitness and nutrition professionals to help them maximize their fitness routines and reach their fitness goals. With the increased awareness about the dangers of obesity, there has been a sharp rise in the use of personal fitness instructors, fitness program designers and nutritionists. The demand for fitness professionals has created a highly competitive market that has forced these professionals to become highly trained and educated concerning the multitudinous nuances of health and fitness. Using a fitness professional

will increase program efficiency, while reducing the risk of injury.

6. Functional Fitness Functional fitness is exactly what it sounds like. It is participating in training programs that are designed to help a person be more physically functional in performing physical tasks that they carry out on a daily basis. This type of fitness training has become very popular among the aging, as well as those who are expected to perform physical activities as a part of their professional careers. Functional fitness helps to increase strength, flexibility and endurance.

7. Exercise That Focuses on Weight Loss According to the Statistics Canada, Canadian Community Health Survey, over 14,000,000 of Canadian adults – 18 years and older -- are obese, subsequently leading to numerous health issues for this population. The best way to combat obesity is to take the necessary steps to lose and manage weight. Exercise and proper nutritional intake are the best places to start, and fitness industry is experiencing a spike in people who are working out for the purpose of losing weight.

8. Yoga Yoga is actually an ancient physical art form that has experienced a resurgence over recent years. The poses that are a part of this type of training are designed to increase flexibility, strength and balance. There are a number of disciplines that fall under this category, and there are different levels for every type of individual need. While many fitness trends will come and go over the next twelve months, the trends listed here have substantial traction that can easily drive their momentum for years to come, in most instances. The key for those who are aspiring to great fitness levels is to find those trends that will support their goals more effectively. References: http://www5.statcan.gc.ca/cansim/a47

Noticing what is around you helps you see what you need. What are your happiness triggers? What is your recipe for happiness? Quite often, we find ourselves in situations in life where we are feeling depressed or angry. We lash out at those closest to us. Our patience has become thin. We look for advice on what to do because we know we don't want to continue acting the way we are acting. We may have received advice to start looking at what triggers us. What triggers that anger inside, what triggers that no-tolerance.

If you've ever read any of my previous articles, you will have heard me say this in one way or another: focus on what you want (not what you don't want). What if you changed up that homework of HALTing and started noticing what triggers happiness? When you do this, you will start to realize your recipe for happiness. Antonyms¹ of the above HALT acronym are: Hungry antonyms: full, replete, satiated, satisfied, stuffed Angry antonyms: calm, collected, content, happy, joyful, joyous Lonely antonyms: befriended, loved, unlonely Tired antonyms: activated, active, energized, fired up, fresh, invigorated, refreshed, rested Using the above antonyms we can create a word² and acronym that can be part of your happiness recipe. The definition³ of clef is - create, writing, artwork, or music. Get into your creative energy and you will find happiness. Start focussing on what makes you feel in a flow of CLEF.

What triggers a feeling of being content? What triggers a feeling of being loved? What triggers a feeling of being energized? What triggers a feeling of being full? Yes, some of your answers may be physical, i.e. having a good nights sleep may make you feel energized. You may think to yourself, “That sounds nice but I was up most of the night with my little one or the storm kept me up last night” or many other reasons for not waking up feeling energized. All of these thoughts are excuses for keeping you from your truest desire of happiness. These feelings that trigger CLEF are activated feelings you can have in any moment when you start to notice more and more what triggers them. Take a new 30 day challenge. Focus on CLEF for a moment every day for 30 days and imagine what happiness you could create. Bring the magic of perspective & creation to yourself and within. You will find an alignment of happiness begins within you that genuinely allows you to show it outward. You will find your personal recipe for happiness. My goal for 2016 was to lose just 10 pounds. Only 15 to go. I ate salad for dinner! Well… mostly croutons & tomatoes. Really just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce. And cheese. FINE. It was a pizza! I ate a pizza! How to prepare Tofu: 1. Throw it in the trash. 2. Grill some meat. I just did a week's worth of cardio after walking into a spider web.

have 5 bodies, called Koshas. Kosha translates to sheath, or covering. What these koshas are covering is referred to as the Atman, our seed body, or Divine Consciousness. This is that which is never born and never dies – the very essence of our being. Each kosha, or layer, makes up an integral part of ourselves and becomes our human experience. The health of each of these impacts how we experience our health.

The Koshas from the inside out: 1. The Bliss Body

– This is the first layer of our body, the one closest to our eternal Being-ness. Peace and contentment exist here and can be revealed in meditation, mindfulness, presence. This is an unchanging state, but one that is still a layer removed from the seed.

2. The Wisdom Body – The second layer is our Know-

ing. It is not the thinking-mind, but rather our understanding of what is Truth that lies beneath the thinking-mind. It is also our sense of “I” or the ego-self which, although important in and of itself, has the possibility of becoming an interfering influence in our experience.

The Five Koshas

How Yoga Philosophy Views the Human Experience toward Health Yoga is a science that has been explored, documented and shared for thousands of years, and now modern scientific methods are able to confirm something – the yogis are on to something good. Studies show that the methods that are used in the practice of yoga – including, but not limited to, meditation, breath awareness, and movement practices – are excellent and effective methods for improving all areas of our health.

3. The Mental Body – This is the mind and emotions. This is where we process thoughts and feelings. When the mind is clear and quiet, it is easy to access our place of deeper wisdom. Out of control or under the illusion that it is the decision-maker – this mind is limited in accessing the deeper koshas. 4. The Energy Body – most commonly known as “Qi” or “Chi”, in Yoga it is referred to as Prana. This is the vital force that animates our body. It is prana that allows the seed to manifest and move about this world in a physical way. When this energy is unable to move in a healthy way, we experience low energy levels and general ill health. When it is healthy, however, we feel charged with life force and glowing health. 5. The Food/Physical Body – This is flesh and bone, this is what we feed with food and water. This is what expires at the end of our life span... In order to be able to enjoy our time here to the utmost, a healthy physical body is ideal. We want to nurture and cherish this body, so that we are able to explore inward towards the other bodies. When this body is unwell, it is very difficult to explore inwardly toward our other layers. Each of these bodies are layered atop the other, and each are Free Intro to Yoga class: Thursday September 8 @ 7:00pm

Yoga theory addresses the idea of human health in many ways. Because of the depth of the history and writings, and also my own limited knowledge (always learning!), to give a discourse that would cover the whole idea is just not possible here. But I CAN write about some of what I have learned, and share how it has influenced how I view my health. I am not going to extoll the virtues of yoga, however. Instead, I am going to offer a brief introduction to the Koshas. This has been integral in helping me to understand how health is multi-dimensional. The main idea to grasp is that we are MUCH more than just a physical body. According to the ancient teachings of yoga, in fact, we

interconnected. The law of cause and effect is in play. What is important to understand, according to yoga, is that what makes an impact to one body, may be displayed as a symptom in another body. For example: an emotional blow, like a bad breakup or sudden loss, may well result in coming down with a nasty bug. Or, as in my case, being in a situation where I feel my life is out of my control (I just can’t get my feet on the ground, I would say) resulted in a painful occurrence of slacking ligaments in my feet.... The trouble is, if we don’t understand the many layers that make up who we are and how interwoven they are, we may only ever treat the symptom and not the cause. This is where my own health has been influenced the most by my yoga practice. If we recognize that we are much more complex than simply a body and mind, and therefore strive to seek the best of health in all these areas – we are much empowered in creating vibrant health. I think this is best summed up by the guruji Swami J Bharati: “We humans are like a lamp that has five lampshades over our light. Each of the lampshades is a different colour and density. As the light shines through the lampshades, it is progressively changed in colour and nature. It is a bitter-sweet colouring. On the one hand, the shades provide the individualized beauty of each lamp. Yet, the lampshades also obscure the pure light.”

Straightening Teeth Can Benefit Your Smile and Oral Health Even with the development of less intrusive methods for straightening teeth, not everyone is ready to move forward with orthodontic treatment. Many older Canadians feels that there have to be some significant advantages apart from teeth lined up beautifully for treatment to be worth their while. The good news is that there are many oral health benefits that come from having teeth in better alignment. Our previous blog highlighted the health of jaw joints and how they’re impacted when teeth and arches don’t fit together. But there are several oral health advantages that come from correcting misaligned teeth, and these advantages benefit patients of all ages.

Let’s Talk Gum Health

We just can’t seem to get through a single article without bringing up gum health! Maybe it’s because the condition and health of this tissue plays such a big role in a person’s overall health. Inflamed gum tissue is a common accompaniment to crooked teeth and a mouth that is prone to excessive grinding. Bacteria (plaque) always play a part in the development of inflammation, but other factors like a bad bite and the habit of bruxism exacerbate the situation. Keeping gum tissue free from plaque is tough when teeth are overlapping one another, and teeth in wonky positions create perfect hiding spots for plaque and food debris. This means gum inflation. But it’s not just gum tissue that becomes inflamed, it’s also every tissue in the body, as the bacteria in plaque are able to enter the bloodstream and cause further problems. Straight teeth are much easier to keep clean as brushing and flossing teeth that are in ideal alignment can’t hide bacteria and food as easily.

bone health. When gums are inflamed and have pulled back from teeth in an attempt to escape the source of inflammation, bone is then exposed to the same bacteria, only with more significant consequences. The same bacteria that cause gums to swell and bleed cause the destruction of bone. Teeth become more mobile with time, and patients are at risk for premature tooth loss. If you want to keep your teeth for a lifetime, you have to take care of all oral tissues – including the bone. Langdon Dental Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream 'racism' these days. A customer asked, "In what aisle could I find the Polish sausage?" The clerk asks, "Are you Polish?" The guy, clearly offended, says, "Yes I am. But let me ask you something. "If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian? Or if I had asked for Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German? Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish? Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican? Or if I asked for some Irish whiskey, would you ask if I was Irish?" The clerk says, "No, I probably wouldn't." The guy says, "Well then, because I asked for Polish sausage, why did you ask me if I'm Polish?" The clerk replied, "Because you're in Home Depot."

Quality Used Books

What about Bone Health?

You don’t often read about the health of the bone that surrounds and supports teeth. Maybe because it’s not visible, it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. But, just like the health of gum tissue is influenced by bacteria, so too is

This is one of 2 shopping challenges we have running right now. If you didn’t read the other articles, you may be wondering... what is a shopping challenge? Well, several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms – continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. So with that being said, we REALLY want to encourage you to shop locally and we are prepared to reward you for doing it! You just need to spend $10 at 8 of the 17 stores on the shopping challenge form and you are entered to win one of several AMAZING prizes worth thousands! Where to start? Well... everyone needs groceries, so start by making sure to buy your groceries at Buy-low Foods. Only thing you have to do differently than every other time you go there, is get the cashier to initial your shopping challenge form. Are you thinking about selling your home? Guy Cooley from Re/Max or Gail Schmidt from CIR Realty can do a CMA on your home for you and that qualifies you for a signature. Have you been thinking lately that you deserve a YOU day? Why not start by visiting Neverending Stories to browse the thousands of gently used books. Find the next romance, mystery or even self-help book to indulge yourself in. Next, you should take yourself to J&K Nails for a much needed manicure to touch up those gardening hands. Invite your mom to go with you, she can get a pedicure or some waxing done. On your way to Sandstone Pharmacy to do some shopping, (because you can find so many incredible things at Sandstone), make sure to treat yourself to an AMAZING cupcake or some frozen yogurt at My Bakery Shop. That is 4 signatures in just a couple hours. There is still time to get into that bikini ready shape for summer, you just need to call Corrie at D.O.C Personal Training and he will let you know exactly what you have to do. To celebrate your new body, you can swing by Kimmer Country Market to get some fireworks. Did you know that even buying GAS will qualify you for a signature. You can get Gas at Kimmer and at Wenstrom Equipment. Are you tired of always having to fill up your propane tank when you want to have a BBQ? Call Cesare’s Plumbing, he can get you a gas line directly to your BBQ. Since you are adding a gas line to your house, why not take a look at upgrading your windows or finally replacing that broken window with Langdon Glass, and since we are still talking about your house... when was the last time you had your shingles inspected? Call Ian at Langdon Roofing, he will inspect them for you! Are you finally ready to get that fantastic business going that you have been dreaming about? Just do it! Terri at Indus Graphics can do your business cards, brochures and vehicle decals and Serge at Eastside Accounting Services can make sure all your accounting is in order. I recently had a crown put in at Langdon Dental, it was the coolest thing ever, and here is why... Dr. Jess has a 3D printer right in the office that cut my crown out of a block of porcelain right in front of me. It really was a whole new dental experience, AND I got my shopping challenge form signed. Aleesha Gosling

I don't mean to brag but... I finished my 14-day diet in 3 hours and 20 minutes. A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it. Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel. Senility has been a smooth transition for me. Remember back when we were kids and everytime it was below zero out they closed school? Me neither. I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or smart or talented... I forgot where I was going with this.

I thought this month I would touch on a few of the things I have seen lately in our nice, not so little community; after all, we are

(I am sure) over 5,000 people by now. The census results for Calgary are out so I am sure ours won’t be far behind. Percentage wise, I bet we grew more than Calgary did since the last count. One of the things I like the most is that we are still a community that has that small town feel, we still have the large lots that you can’t get in too many places in Alberta any more and I think we can keep it that way if we continue to pay attention. At the last Council meeting, there was an application for the last phase of Boulder Creek. It was planned to be smaller lots or multi family but the developer came to Council with a proposal for the same large lot style of development, saying they found that type more desirable by their buyers. I made a motion to accept their proposal and got full support from the balance of Council, which made me feel good. We did get a lot of rain again, but this time County personnel were prepared and available. Some of the ditches got pretty full and although it was quite taxing on the systems, everything seemed to drain. There was no pumping necessary for a change and I got very few calls. The waste water system still took in a lot of storm water, signifying that there still are sump pumps discharging into the sanitary system instead of the storm system. I have heard from County personnel and they will not have much choice but to start inspecting and fining those who are running the sumps into the floor drains. Please consider this an opportunity to correct your systems if you are not discharging the sumps outdoors, I won’t be able to do anything about substantial fines being imposed; it will hurt and it is not necessary, correct the systems, please.

Recently I had a request to bring forward changes to the Land Use or Zoning in Hanson Park. This is not a new request since the lots are quite large in that area and people want large garages. The way it works is that an area that is being developed must have a Land Use assigned to it. If none of the uses in the zoning bylaws work, a developer can ask for Direct Control Zoning or Land Use, basically becoming unique Zoning. Langdon has 4 areas like that, Hanson Park has DC97, Boulder Creek is DC85, Langdon West is DC75 and Langdon Meadows hasn’t started yet is DC151. Part of Hanson Park’s DC bylaw describes the size of garages that are allowed, they are referred to as accessory buildings. A single accessory building can be no larger than 700 square feet but you can have 2 total and the total can be 969 square feet. Standard Land use parameters are generally followed in DC Zoned areas, in the case of basic residential development a DC area may use Hamlet Residential Guidelines (HR1). The bad part is that unlike HR1 Residential Zoning, there is no ability to vary the bylaw without it coming to Council for a decision to change the bylaw, which can be time consuming and costly. Ordinary residential areas can go a little larger if it makes sense and the proposal is within a development officer’s variance ability without having to get before Council with a full Bylaw change. Since there is an ability to appeal to the Development Appeal Board, a DC bylaw can’t since it already has been varied and is unique. In the past, people have asked me how this can be changed. I have mentioned to people that if a neighbourhood wants to change something, they should get together and let me know what it is and I will bring it forward. Well, Richard and Shirley Brink took me up on it, rallied the neighbourhood, got about 40 letters of support and I brought a motion to Council to have DC97 changed to allow a single building to be allowed to be as large as the maximum that the Bylaw allows (969 sq ft). My motion has passed and there will be a public hearing in September. If there is enough support and not much opposition, it will most likely go through and Hanson Park will get the change they want. Democracy at work, good for those taking part. I hope it works out for everyone concerned. Thank you Shirley and Richard for taking the effort to bring the communities desires forward, you aren’t very many steps away from your decision. I look forward to hearing any and all input at the public hearing. If any of you have the time and are affected please take part, if not, at least write down your opinion and submit it to be part of the information that Council considers, it is important for Council to get a good understanding of how the residents feel about something before them, that is how good decisions get made.

The German Shepherd A German shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a grizzly bear heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

We Offer...

The old German shepherd thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in trouble now!" Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching bear. Just as the grizzly bear is about to leap, the old German shepherd exclaims loudly, "Boy that was one delicious grizzly bear! I wonder if there are any more around here."

Full Service Meat Department Deli, Bakery, Produce, ATM, Lotto. Wide selection of products including Gluten free

Hearing this, the young grizzly bear halts his attack in midstrike, a look of terror comes over his face and he slinks away into the trees. "Whew!" says the grizzly bear. "That was close! That old German shepherd nearly had me!" Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the grizzly bear. So, off he goes. The squirrel soon catches up with the grizzly bear, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the grizzly.

The young grizzly bear is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!"

Langdon Community Resources

The old German shepherd sees the grizzly bear coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?" But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German shepherd says... “Social support has been linked to many benefits for both physical and mental health.” — Wikipedia

Talk to Strangers… It’s Healthy for You! Women Talk Strathmore Women Talk Strathmore

on the outside, situations kept showing up to tell me that on the inside, I was not as healthy as I could be. So I did what I always do when change is in order… I did some research. Knowing that our mental and spiritual health is strengthened with relationships with others, I started there. What I discovered is that relationships fall under a broader category called Social Support, and numerous studies confirm that having warm and nurturing social support also provides tremendous physical health benefits. But first, what is Social Support? It is being part of a supportive social network. It is receiving help from others. It is feeling cared for. Social support is often provided by family, friends, colleagues and within groups we belong to, and each source of support may give us something different, which is why it is important to have all of these in our lives.

Darlis is an entrepreneur with a passion for helping people in business, organizations and entire communities recognize their uniqueness and achieve possibilities they may not have thought possible. She believes growth and success start at the grassroots level… with people, and she uses training, coaching and facilitating to inspire positive change. She is a Board member of Women Talk Strathmore. Contact her at Darlis@DownToBusinessSolutions.com.

Have you ever noticed that when people talk about ‘getting healthy’, they are most likely referring to physical health (food, exercise and removing habits like smoking). While being aware of how we are nurturing our bodies is certainly important, did you know that our mental and spiritual health is just as critical to having a healthy quality of life?

When we have a high level of social support, we feel accepted, understood and valued. However, low social support often leads to many health challenges including depression and anxiety. Ok, that makes sense since ‘emotional support’ is a big part of social support, however, what else I discovered was rather shocking. It turns out that people with lower social support are at higher risk for certain diseases such as cancer or cardiovascular disease, have increased pain associated with arthritis, experience more rapid cognitive decline as they age, and they recover slower from certain surgeries than those with high social supports in their life. Wow!

Often overlooked and rarely discussed, the mental and spiritual parts of our lives allow us to relate to others, understand ourselves, cope with the challenges that are part of life, achieve personal fulfillment, feel joyful and purposeful, and many other benefits. Just over a year ago, I decided to get ‘healthy’. This meant removing all processed food, grains and sugars from my diet, increasing how much water I drank, exercising and getting a good night rest. My body responded by releasing 70 pounds, giving me more energy, allowing me to be more focused and many other benefits. But… I had forgotten about the other two areas of my life. In other words, while I may have looked healthy

People with higher social support are less likely to get colds and recover faster from them if they do get one. They have stronger immune systems and are in better overall health, regardless of their stress levels.

This led me to take a closer look at my social supports and I realized that, just like adding more leafy greens into my diet, I could use more social supports in my life and took steps to make that happen. I also recognized those areas of my life that were already providing healthy levels of social support and the one that stood out was Women Talk. Not only does this monthly gathering of women feed my mental and spiritual health, I know from comments others have made that they feel that same sense of acceptance, support and nurturing. If you have been to a Women Talk gathering and heard women share their stories of a life challenge, a painful experience and of celebration and triumph, then you have seen the vulnerability they have expressed. You have witnessed the unconditional emotional support freely offered by the women present. And you have realized how amazing this is, considering most of these women are complete strangers. By providing a safe place to share our experiences, to be understood and to be valued for who we are, Women Talk is an excellent source for social support. So, if ‘getting healthy’ is on your bucket list, and you want to expand beyond your physical body and be whole-healthy, please accept this invitation to attend Women Talk every last Thursday of the month. Your mental and spiritual health will thank you.

Camping and Camps I recently did a road trip to Thunder Bay and spent some time at a local resident’s home. Two things I learned quickly – the word “camp” does not mean the same thing in Thunder Bay as it does in Southern Alberta and when someone is a long-term resident of Thunder Bay, they give directions based on what was, not what is. The directions thing – Thunder Bay was actually two towns at one point, Fort William and Port Arthur, which merged into one. To be fair, they apparently decided the new town shouldn’t contain the name of either of the old places. Or something. I’m sure there’s actually a more legitimate reason but I napped through that part of the tour. As a result of this not-recent merger, directions from locals are now given based on what part of Thunder Bay the particular address USED to be in, as in, “Oh, that old place. Well, it’s over in Port Arthur, we don’t get out that way much”. To further entertain locals, landmarks that no longer exist are also used as directional references, such as, “Turn left where Franklin Street School used to be”. Which is helpful if you know where Franklin Street is and if the Franklin Street School actually happened to be on Franklin Street, not half a block away on, say, Nora Avenue. Needless to say, I now own a current map of Thunder Bay. The other oddity is the use of the word camp. In MY world camp, in the context of a place, is where you send your kids for some peace and quiet in the summer. It should be in some kind of

40 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

Asphalt”

wildernessy place, or at least far enough away from the neighbours so as not to impact their peace and quiet, and hopefully the children will be gone overnight. Day camp is just teasing, quite frankly. And camping, the activity, involves your RV and driving through summer construction traffic for hours to get to the campground. In Thunder Bay, however, camp is apparently what we here in Alberta refer to as a “cabin”. Or if you have Southern Ontario roots, a “cottage”. So when you enquire as to Joe’s whereabouts and are told he is at camp, you are being told he has a lovely cabin somewhere, which he has driven through summer construction traffic to enjoy some peace and quiet. Until you know that vocabulary quirk, conversations involving locals, the word “camp” and all related references are… confusing. But there are certain things that hold true regardless of whether you are at a camp/cottage/cabin or camping in your RV. Things that span geographical boundaries and can be considered the great truths of summer non-hotel vacations. These are the Rules of Camping (camp/cottage/cabin-ing): 1) Sand is not dirt. 2) Anything that can be stabbed with a straightened wire coat hanger is fair game for cooking over a campfire. 3) Nothing says crappy camping like the phrase “Fire Ban”. 4) The amount of days the same clothes can be worn is in direct proportion to how far you have to drive to find laundry facilities and/or how much of a nuisance laundry is compared to at home. 5) Wet bathing suits dry best if never taken off in the first place. This saves on laundry, too. 6) The more rustic the camp/cottage/cabin, the more appealing paper dishes become. 7) If you are fortunate enough to have a camp/cottage/cabin that has been in the family for more than one generation before you, it must be furnished in “early relic”. Even if the original shack has been rebuilt in its entirety with the most modern of buildings and fittings it is a violation of all things camp to furnish in the styles of recent decades. No exceptions. 8) If you go to the same place long enough (RV or family cabin/ cottage/camp) you will develop a bizarre set of names for locals, the relics or the traditions. This camping-cabulary will be indecipherable to all but your immediate family and close camping friends. And most importantly, it’s okay to send your kids to camp while you go camp. At least in Southern Alberta it is… in Thunder Bay you’d likely all end up at the same place. Suzanne Shaver The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Rio Ready?

Jock

“We know every medal will matter, and it’s an extremely tight medal race.” “Our team is larger and deeper than the team we sent to London,” said Chris Overholt, chief executive officer of the COC. “We are confident in our potential to finish in the top-12 in 2016.” Over the past three weeks on my radio show, I have been introducing my listeners to some of the athletes to watch from Calgary and the surrounding area. While we are known as a winter sports training hub, I have put together a list of Calgary athletes to watch with the best medal potential. Cycling: Laura Brown, Monique Sullivan, Allison Beveridge and Kate O’Brien. Brown and Sullivan are both heading into their second Olympics. Beveridge and O’Brien are the rookies. O’Brien just missed competing in the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Bobsleigh and made the cross over to cycling. “Our goal is to win a medal,” says Calgary born Brown who competes in the team pursuit. “We want to be on the top step.” Wrestling: Jasmine Mian and Erica Wiebe. While both of these athletes were born in Ontario, they moved to Calgary to train at the National training center and both attended the University of Calgary. Jasmine competes in the 48 kg (105 pound) division while Erica wrestles in the 75 kg division. Wiebe did not lose a match in 2014. She will be in tough against the home town favourite from Brazil but her goal is also to stand on the podium. Shooting: Lynda Kiejko. (Pronounced – Kay ko) Lynda was destined to be an Olympian. Her late father Bill Hare competed in 3 Olympic Games in 1964, 1968 and 1972. Her sister Dorothy Ludwig represented Canada at the 2012 Games in London (actually beating Lynda out for the spot). Lynda went to London as Dorothy’s personal coach. “That was an experience that has prepared me for Rio,” says Kiejko who will compete in the 10m air pistol and 25m pistol. Track and Field: Mat Bilodeau, Inaki Gomez, Maria Bernard and Jessica O’Connell. Bilodeau is a Quebec athlete who moved to Calgary 4 years ago to work as a CPA at MEG Energy. He will compete in the 50 km race walk. Part of his training workout is walking to work. From Tuscany to downtown Calgary. Gomez was born in Mexico City and his family moved to Vancouver when he was 9. He just finished his law degree at the University of Calgary and his wife also attend University in Calgary. Bernard

Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on Newstalk 770 and is the host of Sportstalk from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Jock@am770chqr.com On Twitter: @talkwithjock

The Zika virus, polluted water, security issues, Russian doping scandal, lack of ticket sales and some venues not being ready! If you believe everything you have heard, read or seen, the Rio de Janeiro Olympics will be a disaster be epic proportions.

The fact is, we have heard these dooms day stories before. Calgary, Beijing, London, Vancouver, Sochi (basically all Olympics Games) have had to deal with scandals, controversy, security threats or lack of popular opinion among some local residents. Will the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics be the best ever? Obviously not! Will they produce memorable and magical moments? You can take that to the bank. When Canada's team of 315 athletes walk onto the world stage during the opening ceremonies on August 5th, the majority of us will forget about the controversies and focus in on the achievements. We will cheer loudly when our athletes reach the podium and we will share in the disappointment when expectations are not achieved. Own the Podium has set a goal of 19 medals for Team Canada at these Olympics. A modest upgrade from the 18 won in London four years ago. With 19 medals, Canada should reach their goal of a top 12 finish in the medal standings. “Canada is ready,” Anne Merklinger, chief executive officer of Own the Podium, pledged last month during a conference call.

and O’Connell are both born and raised Calgarians. Bernard competes in the 3000 m Steeplechase while O’Connell is a 5k specialist. Swimmers: Yuri “The Missile” Kisil and Jason Block. Two more athletes that were born and raised in Calgary. Kisil is just 20 years old and he has exploded up the ranks winning 3 medals at the Pan American Games in Toronto. Beach Volleyball: Ben Saxton. Another born and raised YYC athlete. His father competed in the 1984 Olympics and his parents own the Volleyball Dome. He just missed out representing Canada at the 2012 Olympics in London. He now is teamed up with fellow Albertan Chaim Schalk who hails from Red Deer. Good luck to all our Canadian athletes who will proudly represent our great country!

Your Garage Floor Your garage floor has a variety of uses; from basic wear and tear, to oil stains, salt damage, cracking and concrete damage, it definitely takes a toll. The sim-

plest way to protect it from stains, deterioration, and surface damage is to apply a floor coating. There are numerous options available today, but choosing one that is suitable for your needs can become overwhelming with options, tile, epoxy, urethane, polyaspartic, polyurea; which is best? Things we all look for is durability, longevity, sustainable, and easy to maintain; it almost sounds like a dream!

Tile

Tiles are a great option for a small area, but will not prevent moisture or dirt from getting between your floor and the tile.

Polyaspartic

The next option is a polyaspartic, which can vary from company to company, but is a great product for all the things we are looking for: durability, longevity, sustainable, and easy to maintain. These products are generally done in 1 day, compared to other products that can be 2+ days to install.

Polyurea is just that, with everything you need and more but is one of the most affordable options for polyaspartic options. Not only does it have all the things you’re looking for, but it is also made in Canada, and is one of the few eco-friendly products availBefore able. Make your garage your next living space and redesign your garage!

Epoxy

Epoxy tends to be a great option as a DIY or in your basement, but tends not to last much more than a few years. Even applied by a professional, these products need constant maintenance and need have a top coat reapplied yearly. 10 Tips for Back-to-School Success for Your Child Going back to school carries a mixed bag of feelings. You've enjoyed the relaxed schedule of summer, but you're ready to get back into a routine. Your child is refreshed and now looks forward to seeing school pals again. One thing that still hovers over you and your child is the anxiety over whether or not the school year will be successful or a dud. Here are some tips to help your child get off on the right foot:

1. Meet the teachers. Most schools have an orientation

that enables students and their parents to meet the teachers and administrative staff. Don't miss out on this opportunity to see the people who will be responsible for the majority of your child's weekdays.

2. Have a set bedtime. One of the most important things you can do is to make sure your child gets enough sleep to stay sharp throughout the day. If your child enjoys reading or listening to music before she goes to sleep, start the routine a half hour before you turn off the lights. 3. Assign a space for everything. Your child will need a

6. Encourage your child to invite friends over. You'll get to know the kids she plays with at

school, and their relationship will carry over to the classroom. Your child will feel like she fits in better when she has outside-the-school relationships with her classmates.

7. Reinforce learning. Encourage your child to put her math skills to use while helping you measure ingredients for a recipe. Take turns reading storybooks for fun. It's also important to praise your child for learning new skills and concepts. 8. Set a good example. Let your child see you reading, balancing your checkbook, and doing other things that make use of the lessons he is learning in school. 9. Discuss what happens in school. In the most natural way possible, ask your child what she enjoyed most about her day. You might ask if anything funny happened at school. Don't pounce on her and make her feel she's being interrogated. You might want to participate by sharing some things from your day at work.

4. Have some down time. Everyone needs time to relax

10. Communicate with teachers. Every once in a while, check in with your child's teachers. Find out how they prefer to be contacted and use that method. You can use email, handwritten notes, phone calls, or drop-in visits to stay in contact. Don't forget to thank the teachers for their dedication to your child's education and offer your support.

5. Eat nutritious food. Make sure your child gets a

"Education is the most mowerful weapon which you can use to change the world" - Nelson Mandela

LOCAL FUN AND FRIVOLITY It is kind of funny that now, at my age in life, I find myself living in a small town – well, it isn’t that small, but it certainly is a lot smaller

than Calgary or Edmonton, where I spent most of my life growing up. I love Strathmore and the feeling I get just driving around without all the stresses I have when I do go to Calgary (only when I have to). I was born in Pincher Creek, Alberta, then we moved to Stettler, Alberta; then the two big cities (Edmonton and Calgary) and now find myself in Strathmore. I think when you're born a small town girl, you will find yourself going back to where you feel comfortable. There is just something very special about going home! Smaller towns (I think) seem to have a different sense of community, a different feeling. For instance, I get a great big smile every time I drive by the water park in Strathmore on a hot sunny day watching all the families spending their time together running through the fountains and having a picnic lunch. Those are the things that make children happy and times to cherish throughout their life. And how about Chestermere, with all the improvements to all the beach areas on the lake? Before moving to Strathmore, we lived in Chestermere for 15 years at a time when there were just the houses on the lake and the golf course and the surrounding area was all farmers' field. Well, we all know how that has changed!! From a very small town with only one gas station and absolutely nothing else, Chestermere has grown into a “City” and the lake, which not too long ago, was called “Chester-slough” has become anything but. We should be very proud of our communities and all the amenities they have to offer: walking paths, golf courses, community centers, amazing restaurants and so much more. Be proud of your community and be a part of where you live –there is a reason you live here! Kathryn Hartwell

Q: What do you call a sleeping bull? A: A bull-dozer.

I truly believe there are two types of people in this world: the first type is those individuals that buy their Christmas gifts in March. You go to their home for Easter, and while snooping in the guest room, you find a festive cornucopia of yule time gifts. Not only bought, but wrapped in snowflakes and reindeer glory, ready for the holidays, a mere 8 months away. The other type, of which my husband is one, are those last minute, Christmas Eve shoppers that thrive under the pressure of the deadline looming before them. My husband swears that shopping on Christmas Eve inspires him to only consider the best gifts for each of his loved ones. (I think it has more to do with the fact that his wife and children are terrible snoops when it comes to presents.)

Q: Why are fish so smart? A: Because they live in schools. Q: Why are teddy bears never hungry? A: They are always stuffed!

hunting for work or applying for Employment Insurance, one method is without a doubt more successful. If you wait until the little red dial on your bank account is hovering over empty to apply for EI, you just might find yourself stranded on the side of the road of life, waiting a month or more for someone to come with a jerry can of funds. It typically takes six or more weeks to even get approved for employment insurance, so unless your landlord doesn’t care about the deadline for paying rent, you might want to get on that as soon as you can. Same goes for job hunting. I do have clients come in and tell me they need help writing a resume so they can apply for a job. I ask what their deadline is, they say they have one week left of EI, I sit there, silently screaming in my head. Same silent screaming occurs (okay sometimes not silent) when someone calls and says “Hey Gaylene, I need help with a cover letter for this job I saw last week.” Eight times out of ten they tell me the deadline for the job is 5:00 quitting time, that very day. “Hello! You have known about this for seven days and you leave it for the last minute?! Don’t you understand how the world works? Murphy will be showing up with his great big time sucking law.” I promise we will run out of toner, my computer will freeze, the email address will be wrong and your application won’t make deadline. (Your career coach might also have a wee break from reality in the form of gentle sobbing and rocking.) In the great big grown up world known as employment, deadlines don’t tend to be optional. Supervisors really don’t like giving extensions and career and employment coaches really do

Always best to leave yourself some extra time. So here’s to hoping you meet all your deadlines. I have to run now. My deadline for this article is today at 5:00.

Everyone has mental health. You. Me. Even your cat, George. What may set us apart is the well-being of our mental health. Reoccurring stress, lack of supports, isolation and poverty may impact the state of mental health. Children are especially sensitive to impacts to their mental health, and require love, positive attention and reasonable boundaries to feel secure and grow into healthy, well-balanced adults. So what can you do to help?

Let your child know you care

A smile, wink or a hug communicates how you feel about them, and they will notice!

Encourage coping skills

Ensuring your child can effectively work through problems, big or small, sets them up for success. Knowing when to take a mental break, playing well with others and engaging in healthy, physical activities may help increase coping skills in children.

Minimize negative stress

We can all do without extra stress! Positive stress, or eustress, such as changes that leads to an improvement in your overall performance and productivity is healthy and can increase our ability to adapt. If you are concerned about stress in your child, the American Psychology Association provides good information.

Laugh and Play

It may sound cliché, but laughter IS the best medicine. Begin a tickle war, tell silly knock-knock jokes or dress up for a laughter marathon! A minimum of one hour of daily physical exercise is also recommended to maintain positive well-being. Sometimes it may be hard to get off the couch, but your body will thank you!

Now that summer is here, there are many events that are family-oriented over the summer. I know that many people are considering staycations where they can get away without having to leave Southern Alberta. I invite you to consider supporting our local economy with your tourism dollars! There have been a number of exciting events already, including dozens of Canada Day celebrations across Bow River. There are numerous events that are occurring in the next few months as well, which will make summer in Bow River very exciting, with many activities for people of all ages. I hope that many will plan on attending the Rockyford Rodeo, which occurs the weekend of July 22nd-24th.

From August 12-14th, mark down the 85th anniversary of Milo in your calendars. Milo is a small community with a big heart. Doreen Bonato is a Mother of 4, including triplets. She has been cooking since the age of 10 when her mother introduced her to the kitchen. She has lived in Chestermere since 1999 and runs a small laundry business. She has cooked for the food trucks around Calgary and continues to enjoy teaching her children to cook and also catered her son’s wedding. Doreen's passion for cooking shows in the many dishes she prepares for family and friends.

Breakfast for Dinner Waffles & Eggs As I continue teaching my kids to cook, I realized waffles and eggs are always a favourite in our family, and fairly easy to cook for kids. So why not breakfast for dinner? You will need: - Instant pancake/waffle mix - Sugar/cinnamon (optional) - Water - Cooking spray - 2 eggs per person - 2 tbsp. milk

- Seasoning salt or salt and pepper - Waffle iron - Wisk - Large bowl - Small bowl - Medium frying pan - Spatula

“Highly Recommended by Local Builders”

Highest Warranty In The Business

A waffle Iron is a kid friendly appliance; any one will do. Size or shape is not important. (You can also use the batter to make pancakes in a frying pan on med-high heat. Just wait for bubbles to form on top and then flip the pancake and cook another minute). Purchase any pancake/waffle mix, for kids the “just add water” one is the best. Of course, you can make your own waffle mix from scratch in a snap! It really is quite easy. Plug in the waffle maker. In a large bowl, pour the mix in and add water to the mix using a whisk to stir. Do not add too much, keeping the batter fairly thick. I also add 2 tbsp. of sugar to sweeten it just a touch. It really does taste better! You can also add cinnamon and vanilla to really give it that punch of extra flavour! Spray the Iron with cooking spray each time or it will stick! Use a ladle to pour the mix on to the waffle iron until the entire surface is covered, then close the lid. It takes 4 to 6 minutes, depending on your waffle maker. Open the lid and peel away with a fork and place on plate. Voila! Kids really enjoy cooking with this appliance. Now for the eggs! Let’s scramble (very kid friendly). Use a medium frying pan and add a small amount of oil/butter to the pan. Crack two eggs into bowl and add a splash of milk. Wisk away until nicely blended. We like to add a dash of seasoning salt, or if you prefer salt and pepper or no seasoning. Heat the pan to a fairly hot temperature and pour in the whisked egg/milk mixture, be prepared to fluff and fold the eggs with a spatula scraper at a fast rate as eggs cook very quickly. I actually remove from the heat all together for the final minute of cooking. Plate the eggs and the waffles and enjoy with fruit on top or plain jane style. Happy August!!! We live in a world filled with political unrest, violence, drought, fires, terrorism, and natural disasters. Globally and at home many are experiencing displacement with an accompanying sense of loss. The gap between the rich and poor is reaching new extremes with over 1% of earth’s populace controlling over 50% of its wealth. One eighth of the world’s population (925,000,000 people) live in extreme poverty that is they live on less than $1.25 USD/day. Frustration grows as a disgruntled populace increasingly fails to connect with the next cohort or even attempt to understand the world the next generation envisions as their future. Brexit is a palpable example of this disconnection.

piness. The opportunity to disconnect enables us to reconnect with renewed energy, enthusiasm and fresh vision. The idiom “A change is as good as a rest” contains much wisdom. Too often in the North American drive for more, people forget to find time to explore a different place and simply get away from it all. Discovering or rediscovering elements of our heritage or childhood are rejuvenating and can create a bridge that connects the generations. Cycling everywhere. Floating down a river. Going for long drives through the country. Watching a thunderstorm from the safety of a car. Seeing what figures/ shapes you can find in the clouds. Playing board games. Naming constellations. Watching fireworks. Sitting around a campfire. Making s’mores. All these things help reconnect us with childhood memories of growing up in Canada. Repeating them again, hopefully builds a bridge providing our children and grandchildren with similar, innocent moments. All these things create a shared heritage unmatched by any technology. In the midst of a world gone mad, it is important to find places of grounding and connection, to recognize the value of chasing summer bubbles. What we choose to do individually and collectively makes a difference. We are only one decision away from creating a totally different future for humanity. What will your choice be?

Love, Health, Human Touch and Self-Massage!

without the tender caring touch, the body’s immune systems become compromised and we will also become ill, depressed, confused and the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies start to break down.

By Cynthia Janet E.H. Barnesky 358

How do we show ourselves and each other that we really love and care for one another? It is known as touch and the art of touch is self-massage. Studies show that without touch, we humans will become ill. Babies will lose weight, have a hard time growing up healthy, and will have a hard time developing healthy relationships with themselves and others. This touch can be from a loving and caring parent, caretaker, sibling or any other person who is looking after the baby. As adults,

Self-massage or massage is not just a touch; it is a way of showing love, caring, healing, and appreciation for yourself and others. A lot of us think that when we use the word “touch” it means sexual, but that is far from the truth. Without self-massage or massage we cannot become healthy, happy and loving human beings. Self-massage or massage is touch with a healing twist to it. For many humans without family, friends, or partners, there is always a way of having the greatest healing art of touch and this is though self-massage or massage. When we give our own self a massage, the body, mind and soul take a big breath of fresh air, helping to maintain, and prevent illness. Learning self-massage or, as a partner, or just a friend, giving massage, what great gift to give someone you love or really care for! All it takes is to learn some simple techniques that can be used on oneself or shared with someone you care for. This is also a wonderful way to get to know your own body. If self-massage or massage feels good to you, you will let a friend, family or partner know just how good it made you feel and they might want to try it too! Here are the five major techniques to first learn how to do safely: effleurage (long strokes), kneading (lifting, squeezing, along with rolling), vibration (quick movement of skin), friction (pressure on skin) and last but not least, fanning (gentle, soft finishing stroke). Once you have learned, practiced, and experienced these strokes you can share, teach and pass on this life changing gift of touch; “Self-Massage!”

I hate it when people use big words just to make themselves sound perspicacious. Hospitality is the art of making guests feel like they're at home when you wish they were. Television may insult your intelligence, but nothing rubs it in like a computer.

TUTORIAL – MAKING “SHOE SLACKS” What a great idea someone gave me for a gift for our two sons and their wives. It’s especially appropriate because I can use it as a way to let them know the details of the rest of their gift. We have a Mexican Riviera Cruise planned that we are treating them to so I decided to make them each a pair of “shoe slacks”. Since I managed to figure out how to make them, Kathryn suggested I share the idea with you. They are “sew” easy to make, you’ll want to make some for gifts or maybe you’d like a few of your own for the next time you travel and pack a suitcase.

“Is happiness all in our heads?”

urite o v Fa My bulous d Fa tic an tas Fan n Stuff Fu

I have come to that place in my life where my husband and I are planning for our retirement, which is about 5 years away. I have mixed emotions about the whole concept and not sure if I’m feeling happy or sad about all the life changes that will take affect when that time comes. Selling my house, spending half of my time in Arizona away from my children and my one and only grandchild seems both happy AND sad! Arizona is beautiful and I love my home down there, but to give up my home in Strathmore may be hard for me. Life does change for all of us just in different ways, and it makes me wonder “Is happiness all in our heads?” I was reading an interesting article on the website “Renewing All Things” and in the article it mentioned that we can actually reprogram our brains/ emotions. Groundbreaking neuroscience studies are showing how we can set the filter of our mind to notice and experience more of the events and emotions that WE CHOOSE. Our brain is always working, it is our choice if we take time to direct it or not.

People often ask how to be happier. One amazing revelation is we have the power to set the filter in which we view the world! There is a part of our brain called the Reticular Activating System—this part sorts through BILLIONS of bits of information that we are getting every second. Whatever we are thinking about most, our brain scans the world around to provide evidence to our thoughts. For example, if you think about how blessed you are, you will begin to notice more things in your life that bless you. Can you possibly image that happiness is a learned skill? How fantastic is that? The information on this site is very convincing and has steps you can follow to make this change in your life, for example: Your Reticular Activating System is a part of your brain that filters all of the information coming at you. It only takes in what you have deemed most important by your habitual mental setup. If your mental muscles have been trained to look for worry, problems, and things you do not like, that is what you will see. It’s all in what you have knowingly OR unknowingly programmed your brain to do.

You are quite literally taking in BILLIONS of bits of information each microsecond. Here is the thing: there is so much good and so much bad happening around us that we could not possibly take in all of it, and we set the filter of what our brain chooses to notice about life happening around us. Imagine if your sub-conscience mind was constantly seeing every good thing about people, yourself, and everything about your day. You need to focus on what you do like rather than what you do not like—about yourself, about someone else, about your life, focus on what you do have versus what you do not have, RESPOND instead of REACT to life, have a mindset of abundance rather than of lack. Emotions are habits and the more you express any emotion, the more that becomes your default personality. Unfortunately, many mindsets and emotions that are automatic for us are worry, fear, and criticism. BUT that can change. But, just like anything in lifem you must practice and the more you practice one particular emotional state say, anxiety, the more your cells create receptors for that emotion and kill off the ones that are not being used. The more you practice joy and gratitude, the more neural pathways and receptor sites you make for that emotion—and feel it more often. They say, “Happiness is a learned skill” and the more we shift our focus on what we like versus what we do not like, what we have versus what we do not have, the landscape of our brain begins to change as we wire in new neural pathways and begin to see life completely different. Gratitude is the answer for worry, anger, or any bad emotion! When you are in a negative emotional state, when you stop and focus on what you love, what you appreciate, and what you are grateful for, it physically shifts your body chemistry. Really, this is not even hard work and I’m sure we are all capable of making changes in our lives! This is easy peasy and all you do is every morning think about 3 things you are grateful for; this will set your filter to search your day for more things to be grateful for. Take 3 times throughout your day to refocus your attention and get off AUTOPILIOT thinking. Intentionally think about what you like, what you have, and what you are thankful for. The more you do this, the more this kind of thinking becomes your default. If I start now by the time we actually do retire and we are away from our family for half of our time, I should be the happiest person in the world. So stop the negative thoughts and just be
