High Five Your Neighbour CHALLENGE
If you feel there is less interaction between neighbours or people in general than there used to be, I would have to agree with you. I remember as a
youngster, I knew every single person on my street. In fact, I was very reluctant to go shopping with my mother because it seemed that the whole “shopping” experience ending up being a “visiting” experience with every person in the grocery store (we grew up in a small town). Life seemed much simpler back then and I believe people were friendlier and less suspicious than the world in which we live now. I understand life is far more complicated than it used to be and, yes, we do have more to fear and have therefore become less friendly, even with the people in our own neighbourhoods! But, I have come to realize people still have those “old fashioned” ideals within them. Maybe they are just a bit more guarded these days. Nothing feels better than that moment when you are driving through your neighbourhood and a neighbour gives you a wave and smile and you think to yourself, “Well isn’t that nice—I don’t even know that person”. Or you’re walking down the street and someone says “good morning” and you think to yourself, well isn’t that nice? Why don’t we do more of that sort of thing—are we afraid they might ignore us? Have we become afraid to step out of our comfort zone? What’s the worst that can happen? Maybe you’re just a little insecure, too busy, or just have never tried it. You could change someone’s entire day with just a little smile or a simple hello – it’s like all of a sudden something changes in that exact moment. You have made a conscience effort to live to your full potential, take control and make a difference. All this with just a little smile or wave OR a “High Five” (imagine such a thing) – you are sending out positive energy. You have more power than you think. Just try it and see the reaction you receive and feel your inner energy change in the blink of an eye. Have you heard about the story of Juan Mann—a man whose sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives? In this age of social disconnection and lack of human contact, the effects of the “Free Hugs” campaign became phenomenal. As this symbol of human hope spread across the city, police and officials ordered the “Free Hugs” campaign BANNED. Why? This true spirit of humanity came together in what can only be described as awe inspiring. If you go to http://www.freehugscampaign.org it will fill your chest with pride.
thenewsyneighbour.com
According to quora.com – a certain study has proven that, when a person gets a frugal (nonsexual) touch like a pat on the back, neck-touch and even high fives, it gives him/her a certain amount of self-satisfaction by increasing the oxytocin, a hormone that increases the sensation of bonding and well-being, and also reduces the level of alpha-amylase, which is a stress indicator. It’s not all about giving an out-of-the-blue “High Five” but also what the receiver receives from this action. You know we all strive for the acceptance of our ideas or our personality by our peers and friends. So whenever someone raises their hand to give us a high five (for something we said or did), it gives us an amazing feeling of satisfaction and happiness and we instantly feel connected to that person. We have all heard about paying it forward; this in essence is what you are doing with a smile and a joyous “High Five”. It is a gesture of celebration and greeting.
This is your “Newsy Neighbour Challenge”. Do you think you could challenge yourself to “High Five” at least 1 stranger a day? Only one, we are not asking you to change the world over night. All it takes is one person at a time—one small action can change the world. Make this day and every day a celebration and share your joy with a BIG “High Five”! You can do it – I have total faith in you! By: Kathryn Hartwell On behalf of “The Newsy Neighbour High Five Challenge Team”.
So we started our own campaign, and we called it “The High Five” campaign. Yes, I know it is not as easy as a smile or a hello, and the “High Five” is going to take a little more work, but do not let expectations hinder your path. The first few
6 •
times may seem a little weird and people might not know for sure what it is you are trying to accomplish. It might help if you say loudly “High Five” before you raise your arm. But, the reaction of your action may just surprise you both and just think of the possibilities you are creating.

Healing Benefits Of Pumpkin Seeds Pumpkin seeds are not just the seasonal fare that they once used to be when they were roasted following the pumpkin harvest in October. In fact, you can see people eating pumpkin seeds all year round due to their highly nutritional benefits. So what are the healing benefits of pumpkin seeds, and how can we use them? Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, were discovered in Mexican caves as far back as 7,000 BC. North Americans were the first to use them as food and medicine. The nutritional profile of pumpkin seeds is increased when they are raw, and if stored for longer periods of time, they have been researched to increase in protein content. At nearly 750 calories per cup, they can be a quick, portable, and satisfying snack. So what kind of nutritional punch do pumpkin seeds contain? • An excellent source of vitamin K • Rich in riboflavin, folate, thiamin, B6, and niacin • Good source of vitamin A • Excellent source of manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, copper, zinc, and potassium • Contains beneficial amounts of selenium • Excellent source of healthy fats and dietary fibre • Quality source of vegan protein Add a little seasoning such as sea salt, cayenne, or turmeric to increase the nutritional punch of these highly medicinal seeds. Healing Action Of Pumpkin Seeds Due to their high mineral and healthy fat content, pumpkin seeds can have number of healing benefits, including: • Lowering LDL cholesterol • Promote sleep and lower depression due to their tryptophan content • Helps prevent osteoporosis
• Helps reduce inflammation • Prevent formation of kidney stones • A natural remedy for tapeworms and other parasites • Helps reduce the incidence of prostate related issues, such as frequent urination and cancer • Protects cardiovascular health • Helps raise testosterone levels naturally Just a handful of pumpkin seeds a day can invoke some nice healing benefits, especially for men. How To Use Pumpkin Seeds In Your Diet Pumpkin seeds can be used in a variety of ways in your diet, including: • Eaten on their own, either raw or slightly toasted (add healthy seasonings for more flavour and nutrition) • Sprinkle on salads or add to trail mix • Pumpkin spiced latte • Add to seed cracker recipes • Toast and add to breads and soups Pumpkin seeds are easy to store and incredibly portable, so be sure to keep them in places where you may get the munchies like your office desk, car, or even out shopping. This will satisfy your stomach, and your taste buds to boot. What a great way to get their incredible healing benefits! Derek Henry

Oatmeal
MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF By Kathryn Hartwell
You may find this a little strange, but I think
oatmeal porridge in the morning is fantastic and fabulous for a number of different reasons. I didn’t always feel that way. When I was a youngster, my father would make us porridge in the mornings, then prompt and poke us until we had chocked it all down! He told us that it was good for us and would keep us full until lunchtime. We all hated eating it!
I did not eat porridge for years after leaving home and just in the last few years have I started eating oatmeal for breakfast. As it turns out, good old Dad was right about it being good for you. Over 40 studies show that eating oatmeal may help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. The soluble fibre in oatmeal absorbs a considerable amount of water, which significantly slows down your digestive process. The result of this is you'll feel full longer; oatmeal can help you control your weight. New research suggests that eating oatmeal may reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes. The soluble fibre in oatmeal helps to control blood glucose levels. Oatmeal contains a wide array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and is a good source of protein, complex carbohydrates, and iron. Not all oatmeal is equal. What you usually buy at the supermarket are steel-cut, rolled, or instant oats. Steel-cut oats are whole groats chopped up. These take longer to cook, contain more of their original nutrients, and taste nuttier than regular oats. There are a ton of different flavours of instant oatmeal for when you’re pushed for time in the morning. But as I always say – read the label -- you may be surprised at the amount of sugar and salt in these types of varieties. Great oatmeal starts with plain rolled or steel-cut oats, cooked in a little water or milk, and topped with wholesome ingredients. It's a feel-good start to the day, and if you make it a habit, it can do your health some favours. If you're on a gluten-free diet, look for oats that are certified gluten-free. Though oats themselves don't contain gluten, according to the Whole Grains Council, they can get tainted with gluten when they're being processed or growing. With the exception of certain flavoured varieties, the oats found in your grocery store are 100% natural. The food label on your package of oats should list one ingredient: whole grain oats. You do not have to suffer through a boring bowl of oatmeal. Think about it—you could add fresh or frozen fruit, sliced bananas, or dried fruit such as raisins, cranberries, cherries and dates. It’s also good to add sweetened shredded coconut and chopped nuts like walnuts or almonds. Add a tablespoon or two of your favourite granola or cereal. Add a dribble of pure delicious maple syrup. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar or add a little dollop of yogurt. Flavoured yogurts add taste and all yogurts add a smooth creamy texture. Stir in a couple teaspoons of your jam or fruit preserves and turn your oatmeal into a fruity fiesta bowl.

Almond Joy Oatmeal 1 cup coconut milk 1/2 cup regular rolled oats 1 ripe banana 1/4 tsp almond extract 4 tsp cocoa powder pinch of salt Shredded coconut and sliced almonds for topping Bring coconut milk to a boil, add oats, and reduce heat to medium. Mash a banana thoroughly. Once it's all perfectly mashed, add to the pot and stir. Once more of the liquid has been absorbed, add almond extract, cocoa powder, and salt. Stir, and watch your oatmeal transform into fudgy goodness. When you're pleased with the consistency of the oatmeal, transfer to a bowl. Add a splash of coconut milk and sprinkle shredded coconut and sliced almonds on top. Delicious!
Breakfast Oatmeal Cupcakes 5 cups rolled oats 2 1/2 cups over-ripe mashed banana 1 tsp salt 5 tbsp pure maple syrup, agave, or honey 2 1/3 cups water 1/4 cup plus 1 Tbsp. coconut or veg oil 2 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract Optional: 2/3 cup mini chocolate chips Use your imagination when making these oatmeal cupcakes. They are great for those mornings when you have zero time. You can easily change up the flavour by choosing different spices and add-ins for endless breakfast cupcake variations! You could add cinnamon, shredded coconut, chopped walnuts, ground flax or wheat germ, raisins or other dried fruit. Use your imagination. Preheat oven to 380°F, line 24-25 cupcake tins. In a large mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients and stir very well. In a separate bowl, combine and stir all wet ingredients (including banana). Mix wet into dry, then pour into the cupcake liners and bake app. 20 minutes. I test by using a toothpick – if it comes out clean, the muffins are done. Eat some and freeze the rest for your quick and easy breakfast. And remember, if a food sprouts from the ground or comes directly from an animal source, consider it a suitable part of a healthy diet plan. One carb source meeting that description is oatmeal. Give it another chance – I’m glad I did! The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Parvo
PARVOVIRUS IS A LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS THAT EFFECTS THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT OF DOGS. Recently in the media, there have been reports of an increased incidence of parvovirus illnesses in Calgary and Okotoks. We wanted
to take this opportunity to provide everyone some additional information regarding parvo and how you can prevent your dog from contracting the disease. Parvovirus is a life-threatening illness that effects the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. Unvaccinated puppies are the most at risk for contracting this disease. The younger the dog, the more it is susceptible to infection. Although the infection of older dogs is somewhat uncommon, it is important to keep them vaccinated as this life-threatening disease is expensive to treat and why risk their health when it can be easily prevented by vaccinating.
they can continue to come annually on their birthday for updated vaccinations. Puppies need all three sets of vaccines to become immune. We recommend that puppies be restricted from public areas until a week after the final set of vaccinations at about 16 weeks. With proper intensive hospitalization, 80% of parvo cases can be resolved, but it is a costly and risky venture. If you have any additional questions we’d be happy to answer them.
Parvovirus can be contracted from any environment. The virus is extremely hardy and can sustain freezing and living in a shaded area for up to 7 months. In the first 2 weeks of infection, a dog sheds an enormous amount of the virus in its stool; this also means that the rectal area is contaminated so anywhere a dogs sits or spends time will be contaminated. This includes grass, couches, carpets, floors, bedding, sidewalks etc. The symptoms of parvo are lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and foul smelling and possibly blood tainted diarrhea. The vomiting and diarrhea can lead to severe dehydration. If you suspect your dog has parvo, call your veterinarian immediately as a simple test can be performed and diagnosis confirmed in approximately 15 minutes. The best way to prevent contraction is to vaccinate puppies between 6 and 8 weeks of age, again at 10 to 12 weeks and a third set of vaccines at 14 to 16 weeks. After the three sets of vaccines

DRYCLEANING ON SITE! Coin Laundry Quick turnaround!
A True Community Based Local Family Business!
Headliner: Jaydee Bixby Jaydee Bixby is a Canadian country musician who was the runner-up on the fifth season of Canadian Idol. In 2008, he signed with Her Royal Majesty's Records and went on to release his debut album Cowboys and Cadillacs. Raised in a home of dedicated musicians, it’s Bixby’s family that initially encouraged him to participate in local competitions as a young boy and to follow his dream of becoming a recording artist. The dream led 17 year-old Bixby to grab life by the horns and try his hand at the discerning Canadian Idol where he would eventually become the fifth season’s runner-up, gaining millions of adoring fans in the process thanks to both his impeccable voice and hip-swaggering Presley-esque stage manner that left more than a few ladies swooning. Even Idol guest star Paul Anka was compelled to endorse Bixby, noting that he “has the type of talent that will keep him around for decades to come.” After the success of Canadian Idol, Bixby refused to rest on his laurels. The determined and enthusiastic vocalist utilized that same work ethic he applied to Canadian Idol to realize another dream: releasing his debut album Cowboys and Cadillacs. Bixby celebrates his inaugural step into a lifetime career of recording and touring with the release. We are SO proud to bring you Jaydee Bixby! Performing at 5:30 on June 18th at The 2nd Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival!! You can find the music video to "Old Fashioned Girl" on The Newsy Neighbour Website. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Finally, that 44% loss is worth worrying about because in many ways, we utterly depend on bees. These helpful insects are hugely responsible for pollinating an overwhelming amount of the crops that we need to grow to keep our grocery stores stocked and our pantries full, including apples, almonds, coffee, and many other fruits and vegetables. It would be fair to estimate that at least 33% of the food we eat on a daily basis is thanks to bees helping us grow it. That all sounds pretty upsetting, but we have big reason to be hopeful. That’s because there’s a solution to all of this, one that we can all take part in to turn things around for our fuzzy, winged friends: we all need to plant flowers. Wildflowers, specifically, and lots of them! One of the biggest contributing
Calgary & Area’s
HeatherGlen Golf Course
This number is pretty scary for a couple of different reasons; first and foremost being the sheer staggering loss that this percentage represents – nearly half of all total existing colonies. This is an increase on top of the losses reported the year before, which were a recorded 40.6% decrease from 2014-2015. The second reason for concern is the pattern in which these losses occurred throughout the year. Beekeepers expect to experience some colony decline throughout the winter, but are usually able to make up the losses in the spring and summer, when bees are at their healthiest. Unfortunately, this past winter saw colony losses that far exceeded any normal, acceptable levels of decline. Even more troubling is that losses during the summer months – when bees and their colonies should be at their strongest – were comparable to those experienced during the winter, leaving many beekeepers understandably anxious.
factors to bees dying out is that they’re having a harder and harder time finding the varieties of native flowers they rely on for nutrition, so it’s up to us to pitch in and help them out. Many garden centres are selling seed packets with a mix of different wildflowers specifically meant to attract and provide nutrition for bees. If you can’t find any of these mixes, some good, bee-friendly flowers to start with are poppies, marigolds, dahlias, forget-me-nots, asters, and hyssops. You don’t need any special soil: if weeds or grass can grow there, these hearty wildflowers should have no problems blooming. That being said, be sure to keep your wildflower garden weed-free, so that your flowers are free to bloom and grow without competition. If we all do our part and take a moment to plant some wildflowers, we’ll not only be helping the bees through a difficult time, but we’ll be creating beautiful, colourful spaces within our homes and neighbourhoods as well. So get out there, grab a shovel and some seeds, and start planting wildflowers today!
Stoney Trail SE
It’s summertime in Southern Alberta, and as we coast into the month of June, the signs of the season are all around us: the days are getting nice and warm, the evenings long and lazy, and suddenly it doesn’t seem like such a crazy idea to leave the house in short sleeves. One thing you might not hear as often this summer, though, is the buzzing of busy bees as they float from flower to flower. That’s because bee populations have been in a steep decline for years now, both in Canada and around the world. This past year, however, saw an even more dramatic drop in bee populations than in recent years, as U.S. beekeepers reported a 44% loss of total colonies from April 2015-March 2016. Yikes.

A Public Social House Where Good Friends Meet LEGENDS BAR, STRATHMORE By Nicole MH
What happens when you mix old school chill with new school vibes, when you merge clas-
out his career that several of his past patrons have now become close friends - and their loyalty has followed him to every new venture, bar and restaurant. Speaking of loyalty, loyalty and passion are the words best used to describe Mr. Thompson; his respect for the industry and his undeniable passion and support for live music is something to be envious of.
In Step Legends Bar, my friends... the only place in town where going out feels like coming home.
The duo creates the perfect balance between front of house and back of house service; they are a creative and passionate team, always working to devise the next great event and/or community philanthropic exploit. In fact - just recently they hosted a fundraiser to support locals and families that had been affected by the Fort McMurray fires. And when we say they are insanely amorous about music - we mean they are insanely amorous about music. Which is why they constantly strive to bring in the best of the best in bands every weekend.
sic rock and modern jams with people from all different walks of life? You create a rare and genuine atmosphere, diverse enough to make anyone feel welcome.
Legends is attached to Strathmore’s Wheatland Hotel, owned by the Gill Family who have worked, lived and supported Strathmore communities for decades and have become a pillar within the area. Since partnering with Logan Cox and Greg Thompson, Mr. Gill and the Legend’s team have become one unstoppable force. How so, you ask? Legends Strathmore is quickly becoming one of the most popular social houses in the area. With its larger than life patio, multiple big screen TVs (spectacular for sports fans), weekend scheduled live music and a spectacular dance floor - it’s hard not to be passionate about this place. “We’re a people’s bar,” says Logan Cox, Legends Partner and Head Chef. “Everyone who walks through our doors is treated like a friend. We want people to feel comfortable coming in, kicking back and just enjoying their night. ” This local social house just completed a top-to-bottom renovation, giving it that modish yet downhome feel that so many of us are in search of. With its beautiful progressive lighting, sleek new counter tops and stone floors combined with its chill atmosphere, spectacular service and surplus of VLTs - it becomes the perfect balance between contemporary city and small town tavern. “We have done our research,” says Cox, “and we have a pretty good idea about what our town was missing. We browsed menus and venues and tried to create a place that encompassed everything we couldn’t find in the areas around us.” Logan Cox, native to Strathmore, has gained renowned experience within his field. He has overseen front of house, back of house and has consulted within the industry for over 16 years he has also managed to acquire an undeniable adoration for music. Travelling worldwide, Logan brings with him a taste of foods, beats and culture from different countries around the globe and has set them directly on the tables in front of us.
In courtesy of the Gill, Cox, Thompson partnership - and all of the wonderful members of the community - the Wheatland Hotel offers discounted rooms and rates to Legends’ guests. Say what? Yes. You heard us correctly. They do catering too! Now go ahead and tell us you don’t want to be a part of the Legends magic - we double dog dare you. Denise’s Recommendation: Honey & Salt Chicken Wings! Aleesha’s Recommendation: Avocado, Pancetta & Pine Nut Salad. Kathryn's Recommendation: Classic Poutine

Essentials For Every
Golfer
No matter whether you are a budding professional golfer or
an enthusiastic high-handicapper, there are some things that are essential for you to get the best out of your game. The five listed here will all help you to get maximum enjoyment and achievement out of your golf:
Take lessons: If it's good enough for the top professionals, it's good enough for you. The best golfers in the world are constantly working on their game, but even they enlist the help of qualified coaches to iron out the little faults that so easily creep in. Just ask at your local club - if they don't have a fully qualified and accredited teaching professional, they will know of one close by, and you really will notice the improvement in your game after just a few lessons. The lessons are not expensive for what you get in return. Make sure your clubs fit you: The temptation to buy that shiny new set of clubs you have just seen on the television can be incredibly strong, but how do you know they will bring your scores down? The latest technology is never going to do your game any harm, but be sure you get the most out of it by taking advantage of the expert help that is readily available. Many of the large retail chains have a swing analysis suite where your action can be measured in minute detail, and even the qualified professional at your local club can do a good job of this by eye. The extra cost of having a new set of clubs fitted to you is small and it could make a very big difference to your game.
Golf
Always use the same balls: If you are an average
golfer, it's less important what ball you use than it is to ensure that you don't chop and change. Good scoring in golf comes from consistency, which demands practice and attention to detail. If you always use the same type of ball, you have eliminated one variable. There are balls out there that will give excellent results without breaking the bank.
Get good quality attire: 32 •
There is no doubt that
thenewsyneighbour.com
some golfers can exhibit questionable taste in clothing, but there is a huge amount of high quality equipment available that looks good and is a reasonable price. Buy quality footwear - a round of golf is a four to five mile walk, even if you're not going hunting for the ball a lot - so it pays to look after your feet. Buying good quality clothing makes just as much sense. Comfortable, well fitted clothing won't distract you from the main object - hitting the ball.
Know your distances:
This is vital to consistent scoring. Forget how far anybody else hits the ball with any given club - all that matters is how far you hit it, hopefully every time. Go to the driving range and hit plenty of shots with each club, keeping a mental note of how far the ball goes. Do bear in mind that typical range balls will not fly quite as far as the ball you would use on the course. When you get out on the course, approach every shot with the same routine. There are plenty of aids to help you know what distance is required - most courses have planners available for purchase and there are a variety of modern gadgets which will tell exactly how far you are from the hole. Golf, for most people, is an enjoyable pastime, but everyone would like to shave a couple of shots off the handicap. Pay attention to the five simple points above and you will have every chance to do just that. PT Corner The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

lthough we all know just how much our fathers do for us, do you ever stop to think what being a dad is really like? They work all day, come home at night, sit at a table crowded with noisy kids, give up their favourite sport shows in favour of cartoons, and then wait for their turn in the shower before they can call it a day. No, being a father isn't all about sacrifice, but if you want the truth, it comes pretty darn close to it. Why not make this year's Father's Day more fun and exciting than ever before?
Father's Day
Breakfast in Bed with a Good Read Sure, your dad may have had breakfast in bed before, but with the Newsy Neighbour Father's Day Edition? That has to be one of the most novel ideas when it comes to doing something nice for a truly great dad. It really isn't all about serving dad breakfast in a relaxed (and kid-free) zone, but we have stuff that dad will love reading in this issue. Another good thing to take him would be the sports page from the local paper; you are telling him that you appreciate deep down inside all the times he gave up watching his favourite sports telecast so the kids could watch The Simpsons on that flat screen TV he worked so hard to buy.
Make His Life Easier with a Tool Belt Another way to send a message that you know just how much he does for the family is to give him a symbolic (but useful!) gift like a tool belt. However, you don't want to give him just any old tool belt, so why not look for one available in an assortment of colours, or one that will give him plenty of space for carrying around extra accessories?
34 •
thenewsyneighbour.com
Do DAD'S Chores For Him There is always work around the house that dad needs to do. There will be no question as to your motives when you make a 'coupon book' with vouchers he can swap for chores you're willing to do. One might be to clean the gutters and another might be a lawn mowing coupon.
A Day without Noise Sure, you want to celebrate Father's Day with dad and of course he wants to spend time with you as he may have so little of it. But remember, dad works hard day in and day out, so why not give him a day without all the noise and confusion that are part and parcel of being a dad. Take the kids to the park for the day and let dad have the house to himself, or send dad to get a relaxing massage. Whatever it is you do for dad on Father's Day, make it have meaning. Whether your gift is a homemade coupon book or a brand new watch, it has to count for something. If it is a symbolic message of your appreciation for having the best dad in the world, cost won't be a factor. He'll see that you know who he is, what he does and that he's appreciated - and in the end, that's the best gift you could ever give - the gift of appreciation for a job well done.
Kudos to all you great dads out there and may this be the best Father's Day ever for you and yours.

Husband Banned From Wal-Mart
After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse. Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from our local Wal-Mart. Dear Mrs. Samsel, Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behaviour and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Samsel, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras. 1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking. 2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in the housewares department to go off at 5-minute intervals. 3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom. 4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. 5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway. 6. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.

7. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose. 8. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were. 9. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the 'Mission Impossible' theme. 10. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna look' by using different sizes of funnels. And last, but not least: 11. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, and then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here.' Sincerely, Management

Golfers Are You Ready To Swing? Self-Massage and Stretching Can Help! By Cynthia Barnesky

It is time to pull out the golf shoes, gloves, balls and clubs. To help prevent injuries and to increase your swing, here are a few things every golfer should know, from pro to beginner, young to older player. It is important that your body, mind and soul are ready to give you all you need to play a great and pain-free game. Did you know that self-massage is one of the key tools to help you become a better golfer? You already have the tool to perform self-massage and some stretch moves: your golf club! This great tool can help you give your body a much-needed warm up and stretch before, during and even after the game. Here are just some quick tips: Take your golf club and start massaging your legs by holding both ends of your club between your hands and use your club like a stick; rubbing your calf muscles, hamstrings, thighs (IT band), then also use it on your ‘glutes’ and lower back muscles. The neck can also be massaged with your golf club. For your forearms, hold down the top of the club with one hand as you clench the club between your knees while sitting. Then, rub your free arm and forearm against the club. Just be careful not to press too hard; if it hurts, stop!

Next here are three easy stretches you can do. 1) Place your golf club behind your neck with your arms over top of the golf club. Start by facing forward and take a deep, slow breath in and as you slowly breathe out, keeping your hips planted, turn your waist to the right, take another deep breath in and out and with the out breath, turn back to the starting position. Do this two or three time on the one side and then the other.
2) Take your golf club and raise it over your head. Take a deep breath in and as you blow it out, slowly bend to the right as far as the out breath will take you and then take another deep breath in and on out-breath, move back to the starting position; doing this two to three times. Remember to also do the left side. 3) Hold your golf club in both hands just like a stick and place the club on your shoulder. Take a deep breath in and on the slow breath out, raise the club over your head; with another deep breath in and out, try to raise it a little higher, then with another deep breath in and with out-breath, lower the club to the shoulders again. This stretch can be done two or three times. Remember to stretch and do some self-massage to help keep your muscles warm, loose and flexible before your first swing. Have a great pain-free season!

We, as business owners, want to encourage the Chestermere people to support their local businesses. We are showing our passion and support for this community by working together and supporting each other’s businesses.

As Alberta’s fastest growing municipality, the City of Chestermere has rapidly evolved from a lakeside summer village into a dynamic, recreational oasis for nearly 19,000 residents. www.chestermere.ca
As I write this, it looks like some residents of Fort McMurray will be able to return home soon. Here’s hoping Mother Nature cooperates and sends some more much needed rain. It is in times like this, when our neighbours to the north need our help, that Albertans step up and show their true spirit of generosity. On very short notice a team of dedicated volunteers and donors made last Friday the 13th a lucky day at our Alberta Strong fundraiser in Chestermere. My husband Malkeet, my sister Parveen, Jed Snatic of Chestermere, Alex Halat from Langdon, and Patrick Watson and the Knights of Columbus assisted by my office staff worked night and day for a week to get it organized and dozens of volunteers (including the Newsy Neighbour’s own Aleesha and Denise!) made it a smooth running success. Donations of supplies, silent auction prizes, and raffle items poured into the Constituency Office from Chestermere, Langdon, Springbank, Bearspaw, the rest of the constituency, Strathmore, Calgary, and beyond. On the big day over 1200 people came together to show their support, enjoying over 2000 meals, entertainment, bouncy castles, and some spirited bidding at the silent auction. Our two Fort McMurray MLAs, Brian Jean and Tany Yao, shared their stories of the destruction they saw, the courage of our firefighters and emergency services, and the indomitable spirit of all Albertans, those who were forced from and in some cases lost their homes and those who came through and selflessly helped out. Make no mistake, recovery will be a long process, but as Brian Jean said: “This is my home. We will rebuild it, better than ever.” By day’s end we raised on the order of $25,000 which will be matched by the Alberta and Federal governments. We don’t have a final tally as yet, as people are still coming in to pay for their winning bids and even donate additional money. I have never been prouder to serve as the elected representative of such kind and generous people, many of them donating in spite of facing severe economic hardship themselves.

Situated 25 minutes from downtown Calgary, the Town of Chestermere has grown over 300% in the last ten years as families are continually drawn to the Town’s beautiful lake, friendly neighbourhoods, business opportunities and access to recreational activities.
We have also been collecting supplies at the office for evacuees. The first truckload went out May 25 driven by my husband and destined for Lac La Biche. Again, the generosity of my constituents does not surprise but continues to amaze me. Other Canadians have pitched in. From Ottawa staff at the Canada Border Services Agency, along with Santas Anonymous, C&C Enterprises (donated tractor), GAL Power (donated trailer) coordinated with my husband and sent a semi load of needed supplies to Lac La Biche. Lac La Biche has quadrupled in size! We also need to give a special shout out to our energy companies who made their camps, planes, and equipment available to evacuees and those fighting hard to save Fort McMurray and surrounding communities. Our corporate citizens have always been noted for their philanthropy and they have surpassed themselves this time.

We certainly do not want to forget our Atom-aged kids. Last year, the Chiefs had 2 Atom teams in the Calgary League. It was great to watch as 40 kids from Chestermere, Langdon and surrounding areas suited up in their uniforms and took to the field every Sunday. Forty kids, boys and girls, having fun, being active and learning to be part of a team is an amazing sight to see. Birth years for our Atom team are 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

June Already? By Suzanne Shaver
sponder) certification (proud momma plug!). And in the spirit of “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, he managed to schedule that for the same week, too.
Stories, Musings, A Little Adventure And Humour Suzanne is a native Calgarian that lived in Langdon for 15 years before transplanting to Chestermere in 2013. By day she is an accountant with a frustrated creative side that occasionally escapes in form of written musings, which is far more interesting than adding stuff up for people.
As May winds down towards June, I find myself reflecting on a number of familiar refrains that happen about this time each year. You know, the usual: “I can’t believe it’s June; this year is going so fast!” “I can’t believe it’s June; what the heck are we going to do with the kids for the summer?!!” “Wow, it’s June, I wonder if it’s ever going to rain this spring?” “Wow, it’s June, I wonder if it’s ever going to stop raining this spring?” “Oh man, Father’s Day again. I have no idea what to get him this year. Again.”
Preparation for grad invoked a series of odd responses from the family members that were invited to attend the ceremony, ranging from a “sure! When and where?” from one set of grandparents to a “we need to know when it is; we have a very busy schedule” from the other grandparental set. When his older brother was asked if he was interested in attending the ceremony and the banquet, his response was, “Not in the least, but I feel like I should be”. Yes. Yes you should. His interest level moved up a tad when I, a) reminded him how many of his own ball games his younger brother had been dragged to over the years, and, b) told him he was off the hook for the banquet as long as he got his butt to the ceremony. Yup, brotherly love; it’s everything I always imagined… The logistics of the ceremony got a bit dicey as both sets of grandparents decided they wanted to be taken to the ceremony, as opposed to get there themselves, due to concerns with mobility, parking and the logistics of finding each other in a crowd. Somewhere in the middle of arranging who was driving who, where everyone was meeting and which vehicle would hold everyone for each load, I realized my relationship with my parents has switched. Somehow I’ve become the adult that does the organizing and they… aren’t.
7.41 x 9.91
This spring has been a little different in our household as I attended my first Chestermere High School graduation, for my own kid, and I decided to move. At the same time. Either event would be exciting on its own but in the spirit of keeping things interesting I decided to kick it up a notch by scheduling both events on the same day. Technically it wasn’t all my scheduling that did this; after all, I have no control over the schedule for grad. I did have some control over the move day but will blame that conflict on an inability to check my calendar prior to committing to things. Details… pfft! For my son, May was extra stressful as he prepared for grad, final exams and moving, plus the added-on stress of writing the provincial exam for his EMR (Emergency Medical Re-
I guess that happens to everyone at some point. Looking back at my own grandparents, and their attendance at any of my “life events”, I realize it was my mom that organized them and got them there and it was my mom that we all turned to for logistic questions, so it’s nothing new, but… I can’t honestly pinpoint when my mom retired and I became Organizer of All Things Family. Me. The one who can’t manage to schedule a grad and a move in a different week, never mind a different day, is now, somehow, inexplicably in charge of Family Event Logistics. We are probably doomed.

Or maybe not. The boy wrote his EMR exam, went to an adult job interview the day of his ceremony (there’s that apple again), attended his grad with all grandparents and his brother accounted for (with brother in dress clothes, no less), appeared at the banquet in a freshly dry-cleaned suit with a tie that matched his date’s beautiful dress (okay, his dad gets credit for making the tie happen) AND the move happened on schedule, despite the moving truck breaking down after it was fully loaded. Which, I might add, was not my fault but did make getting to the banquet on time a bit… interesting.

THE MONTH OF JUNE
1”
June is a very important month for our Fathers and Husbands. June 19th is Father’s Day so be sure you plan something very special for your hard working Dad. June is also known for many other important events. Did you know that June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere? The longest day of the year is June 21st or 22nd. It is the day when the sun is at its most northerly point and this is why it is "the longest day". June in the Northern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent to December in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. In the Northern hemisphere, the beginning of the meteorological summer is 1 June. In the Southern hemisphere, the beginning of the meteorological winter is 1 June. The traditional June birthstone is the pearl and the birth flower is the rose, or honeysuckle, as roses and honeysuckles bloom throughout. June 6th, 1944 was D-Day when the Allied forces landed in Normandy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy was shot by an assassin June 5, 1968 and died the following day, 1968. To this day there are many unanswered questions as to the truth of this day. Ford Motor Company was founded, June 16, 1903. United States declared war on Great Britain, June 18, 1812 AND: June 7 is . . . . . National Chocolate Ice Cream Day June 22 is . . . . National Chocolate Eclair Day June 23 is . . . . National Pink Day June 30 is . . . . Meteor Day Enjoy this special month with your family and give you Father the Best Father’s Day Ever!! Kathryn Hartwell

THE CHRONICLES of Larry and Roger A Pair of Diabetic Feet Hello, Larry here! June has arrived! Happy
Father’s Day to all you great dads out there. Enjoy the time you will spend with your children, grandchildren, or your fathers. Those of you that can only be with them in your heart, enjoy that too; it is still a solid way to connect with your loved ones. Roger says, “It is all about intention.” For Father’s Day this year, our human has asked his Dad to take a day trip to the mountains for lunch and to take a small hike. What a lovely way to spend the day together. So off we go! There are so many terrific trails in the Banff/Canmore area. I know we will have a blast; they are doing the research on trails as we speak. The days of only a few lunch options are long gone, so that is another decision to be made. They finally decided that, weather permitting, they would pack a healthy lunch and eat on the trail, if the trail allows. We understand hiking with diabetes is very doable if you prepare well; bring your diabetes gear, and have a good routine for testing and adjusting your blood sugar before, during, and after the hike. Remember to always talk to your doctor and care provider before taking on any new and strenuous activities. Roger has done some research online (there is plenty of information available) and has come up with a short list. Do not be afraid to add steps and components that pertain to you specifically. We put this together for us.
Hiking with Diabetes:
Step 1 – Research the Hike Always research a new hike to find out how long it is and if it includes any crazy elevations. There are plenty of resources online to find good trails, their conditions, length, and elevation. It is generally a good idea to not hike more than 2 hours and avoid high elevations. If the hike is more challenging than normal hikes, one may need to adjust insulin accordingly and bring extra snacks.

thenewsyneighbour.com
Brulotte Bookkeeping Patty & Tax Services PH: 403.361.0637 www.brulottebookkeeping.com
Hiking with Diabetes: Step 2 – Packing What’s Needed It is a great idea to have a pack designated specifically for diabetic needs; then you do not have to go searching for supplies when they are needed. Plan to bring: • Diabetes gear – Glucose Meter, possibly a CGM receiver (Continuous Glucose Meter) and Insulin Pen • Emergency gear – Glucose tablets and fruit strips and perhaps a Glucagon Emergency Kit • Water – Minimum 1 litre • Snacks – Depending on how long you will be gone, perhaps a full lunch (like a chicken wrap) or just a few rice cakes. • Other stuff – Phone, Band-Aids, sunscreen, etc. Hiking with Diabetes: Step 3 – Adjusting Blood Sugar Levels and Insulin 1. Testing and adjusting insulin before leaving home. 2. Testing and potentially adjusting when on the hike. When you walk up and down a steep elevation, you activate pretty much all the large muscle groups in your legs and that can impact your blood sugars for several hours after you complete your hike. So heads up if you’re new to hiking with diabetes. If you are new to hiking, work with your doctor to make sure you are ready and it is safe. All this hiking talk brings to mind all the research we have done on exercising as a diabetic. We will get into that next issue. Also, a friend of ours has been told that we have readers out there that would like a really good Diabetic Dessert recipe or two. We have decided to try some out and post our favourites over the next few months. How exciting! Stay tuned for much excitement. Enjoy your lead in to summer. Be safe and smart. Until next month! The keynote speaker at Marigold Library System’s 2016 Workshop, recently shared his answer to ‘how do we create irresistible community?’ James LaRue, Director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, unveiled in his compelling address “Passion, Purpose, Play” one of the keys to thriving today - telling stories of our successes.
FRIDAY, JULY 1 JOHN PEAKE PARK
With so many ways for people to spend their social time, it is essential for organizations to be unique; the stories told are what make that community unique! The stories that people love to hear are of personal experiences. They are the testimonials shared from the joys, successes and even the fears that helped someone else feel that they were not alone. The Hope Bridges Team has been using story for years and many of these stories are about powerful experiences that participants have within our community. These stories energize and encourage our team and members. They are used to advocate and market our community and as a result, we are seeing a steady increase in growth and ownership. Why is story the hope for communities today? Stories are personal – they connect hearts. Story motivates and educates. It helps leaders remember the reason they believe in the mission. It builds the capacity of the community, and helps to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. Most importantly, story enables us to understand and empathize with others. In his address, Jamie reminded us, “We are not rational creatures. We are feeling creatures who think; not thinking creatures who feel.”

Fear Of Aging HEALTH & BEAUTY
By Kathryn Hartwell
"Instead of thinking of life as a gradual decline, maybe it is time to start thinking of how life gets better as we go along!"
A thought came to my mind the other day. I’m being serious here. Do men worry about aging as of-
ten as women do? Or are women just more brainwashed with all the commercials about aging and face creams and Botox, cosmetic surgery, sags and bags and everything else under the sun?
Why are we the targeted group and not our partners? They are only targeted in one department – if you get my drift. Both men and women worry about aging and I think it is the market place that gives the misconception that women worry a lot more! The difference is that we worry about different possibilities. For instance:
Men’s Aging Fear #1: Impotency.
"There’s no question that men worry more than women about performing," says Ken Robbins, a University of Wisconsin professor of psychiatry who's also board certified in internal medicine. "When libido starts to diminish or things don't work as well as they did before, it's very common for men to worry that they'll embarrass or humiliate themselves." Perhaps performance anxiety isn't surprising given a 2008 British study that showed men think about sex 13 times a day compared to 5 times a day for women.
Women's Aging Fear #1: Losing Attractiveness/Becoming "Invisible"
Let's see… wrinkles. Saggy breasts. Gray hair. Permanent post-baby belly. Dry skin. Weight gain. Each change wrought by time and gravity renders most women a bit more invisible in a culture that prizes dewy youth. Enter the booms in plastic surgery, laser skin resurfacing, and "anti-aging" cosmetics. And it never ends.

Men's Aging Fear #2: Weakness
It's said that knowledge is power -- but for men, so is physical power itself. "Men value strength and vigour more -- and when it starts to slide, they take it much harder than women do," Robbins says. "Losing physical strength adds to their overall sense of loss: 'If I can't lift things, what kind of man am I?'"
Women's Aging Fear #2: Being Left Alone A spouse's death figures high among women's fears, as does seeing their children dying first or losing old friends when they relocate for retirement, move to be closer to family, or become sick or die. "Social losses are very painful," says Eva Kahana, professor of sociology at Case Western Reserve University, who directs its 20-year Successful Aging Study. "The fear of being alone is harsher for women. Men seem to more easily find a younger model. You're more likely to see a 70-year-old man with a 30-year-old woman than to see the reverse."
Men's Aging Fear #3: Retirement/irrelevance
The prospect of retiring fires enormous anxiety because it, too, begs the question, “If I'm not my career, what am I?” “Men fear retirement because it’s how they define themselves and how they fill their time," says geriatrician Laurie Jacobs, director of the Jack and Pearl Resnick Gerontology Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. “In the U.S., reaching retirement age tends to coincide with having your opinion solicited less and becoming more ‘invisible,’” she adds. Net result: a huge ego blow. “Women have an easier time giving up work,” psychiatrist Ken Robbins adds, “because they more quickly fill its gap with friends and children.” The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Women's Aging Fear #3: Becoming a Bag Lady
"Men tend to be more financially secure, make more money, and have a bigger pension and Social Security cheques," says Ken Robbins. "Widows are often left with dramatically less money." Today's younger women may also carry mental images of their mothers' and grandmothers' financial illiteracy.
Men's Aging Fear #4: Losing wheels (and independence)
From his first souped-up junker to his badge-of-success sports car (or midlife-crisis convertible), what a man drives reflects his very identity. In American culture, cars also represent freedom, independence, and the endless possibilities of the open road. The prospect of having to give all that up -- which many men first think about when they see their own fathers turning in the keys for safety's sake -- is scary indeed.
Women's Aging Fear #4: Cancer
Maybe it's those ubiquitous pink ribbons. Cancer, particularly breast cancer, tops the health concerns women fear most, according to a 2005 study by the Society for Women's Health Research. Ironically, lung cancer is twice as deadly as breast cancer for women, but seventh on their list of fears. Respondents were also more fearful of ovarian cancer than colon cancer, although the latter kills more.
Men's Aging Fear #5: Losing his mind (or his wife losing hers)
Perhaps recent headlines are scaring more men into the fear of Alzheimer's: Men are more likely than women to have mild cognitive impairment (MCI) -- sometimes called "pre-Alzheimer's" -- and get it earlier, according to a Mayo Clinic study in the September 2010 journal Neurology. Nearly one in five men ages 70 to 85 have the condition, which falls between normal forgetfulness and early dementia. More women, on the other hand, actually develop Alzheimer's disease. But that, too, is a scary prospect for their mates—being thrust, with little preparation, into a caregiver role. "Many men haven't done too much caregiving," Robbins says. And nothing dashes the fantasy of a footloose-and-fancy-free retirement like tending full-time to a partner who doesn't even know you.
Women's Aging Fear #5: Being Dependent on Others
Both men and women alike dread "becoming a burden," according to the Successful Aging Study's Eva Kahana. But for many women, who have traditionally been the caregivers, the prospect of a role reversal is especially uncomfortable. "A woman may see her spouse as not being interested or skilled in taking care of her if the time comes, knowing he knows almost nothing about caregiving," Robbins says. "She doesn't want to interfere with the lives of her adult children either." When I think about my own well-being, I think I would agree with these realizations found on the website caring.com. But, when you think about it, every single day each of us is getting older—and thankfully so! Consider the alternative. So instead of thinking of life as a gradual decline, maybe it is time to start thinking of how life gets better as we go along—and that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

The Shoes of Happiness Step Into Their Shoes Written by Carla Lomenda-Segovia of Lomenda Energy Inc.
Many times we wait to show compassion. We wait to feel compassion. We read a situation and judge it. We get angry and upset with someone because of how they are acting. We get upset with their actions and attitude. Then somewhere along the way, sometimes only moments later and other times months later, we find out why that person was being totally unreasonable. We find out something terrible was going on in their life. Then suddenly something shifts inside us and it's okay to be compassionate and have understanding. This shift happens because you have seen another perspective. You have seen what you could not see before. You can feel what you could not feel before. Excuses are not being made for cruel behaviour here. This is an article for how you react or respond to these situations so that you can live a happier life. Compassion is meant to come first; not last and definitely not after reasoning. Live life from being compassionate and showing compassion always. This is vital to more happiness showing up in your life. Be compassionate always, then take action. Then respond. Compassionate action is a key strategy to a happy life. Take this strategy and implement it into your everyday life and to your business.
How can we remember to have compassion first? Start with this: practice curiosity. Curiosity opens the door for new perspectives. Embrace and embody curiosity to immediately remove judgment. Practicing curiosity will enhance your relationships in business and at home. Practicing curiosity will open doors to having compassion. Practicing curiosity empowers you and your relationships. This summer, put on your happiness shoes and play in the land of compassionate action, embodied curiosity and empowered relationships. Then hopscotch your way to more happiness in your whole life, both at work and at home. Your happiness agent, Carla

3 Ways to Meditate for People Who Can’t Sit Still Written by Becky Stone
There is no doubt any longer that the benefits of meditation are obvious and desirable. For centuries – heck, thousands of years – cultures and spiritual traditions from around the world have expounded the virtues of meditation as a clear path to self-awareness, growth and contentment. And with over 30 years of documented scientific observation now available, we know that the benefits are far reaching into many corners of our health. Here is a list of some of the benefits gained from consistent meditation practice, including many that are scientifically documented: • Improved cognitive functions including comprehension, memory, focus and decision making; • Improvements in physiological functions such as adrenal health, strengthened neural pathways, body awareness and proprioception (control), and cardiovascular health; • Increased sense of well-being associated with higher levels of the body's “feel good” chemical production that has been shown to ease symptoms of depression and anxiety; • Effective pain management as alternative to or supplement for traditional techniques; • Assists in forming new habits and breaking addictions; • Better, more restful sleep I could go on for pages on this, but I will stop here. Personally, I know that my meditation practice has become a place of solace in times of stress, a place where I can connect with the Divine, a place to find myself when I feel lost, and a place to quiet my mind enough to let the silt settle and clarity return.
medical and spiritual. Using postures that include both moving and still, along with breath and mental focus, this practice has been developed and taught for centuries. I have been lucky enough to have been introduced to this right here in our community and I would be happy to put you in touch with the instructor. There are lots of great resources online as well – got to love You-Tube and Amazon! 3. Colouring: This is definitely trending these days, but it has been around for a long time. Monks in Tibet use coloured sand to painstakingly create stunning patterned images and then deliberately destroy them to represent the impermanence of this life on earth – in fact, they have to study for 3 years before they are allowed to participate in the practice. Colours themselves are proven to produce powerful physiological responses. They act upon us energetically as well – the Chakras are arrayed in the rainbow spectrum, and colour therapy is becoming a common healing practice. The act of colouring can be soothing, but when we focus solely upon the act and our breath, and practice quieting the mind, it becomes meditation. The moral of the story is this: you CAN meditate, even if sitting still is not for you. The benefits are so far reaching that there is no doubt that it is worth giving these options a try. And even if you love to sit in stillness (as I do now, most days, after much practice) these are wonderful additions to explore too. Happy meditating! Namaste, Becky
A Mindful Minute
Becky is a yoga instructor and the owner of Pranava Yoga in Strathmore, AB. So why doesn't everyone do it? Some don’t know how.... and others are pretty sure they won’t be able to! As a person to whom stillness doesn’t come naturally – it has taken me a LOT of practice to develop a quiet I am comfortable in – I have found a few practices that I come back to regularly that don’t involve sitting still. Perhaps there will be a meditation practice here that you can adopt for yourself. Be gentle and patient in this process, and the benefits are yours to reap! 1. Walking Meditation: This is one of my favourites, especially at this time of year. If you are up for it (though it is not necessary) take your shoes off and walk with your feet touching the earth. Become super, hyper-aware of every step you take, the feel of your foot on the earth, the way your arms move in space, the way your breath flows as you walk, the smell and sights and sounds of the path you are taking. Strive to observe the machinations of the mind, rather than participate with it. Every time you find yourself thinking, gently come back to the present act of walking. If you are blessed to live near a labyrinth (ahem dear Strathmore Lions, shall we talk about an idea I have?) try walking that – the ancient pathway is truly profound. If you have a place in the outdoors that you love to be, a place that nourishes you - then go there to practice. But the only thing we need for this is room to move around - even walking a circle in your living room can become meditation. 2. Qi Gong: Many are familiar with Tai Chi, which is a form of Qi Gong, but there are several categories of the practice. Qi means “life force”, and Gong means “accomplished”. Each category has a focus: martial,

In a small town, it is important that we all work together in promoting and supporting each other’s businesses. Keeping the dollars local means a much larger share of revenue is put back into the local economy, enriching the whole community! That is exactly what “A Business Affair” is about. We, as business owners, want to encourage the Langdon people to support their local businesses. We are showing our passion and support for this community, by working together and supporting each other’s businesses. We have one-of-a-kind businesses that add distinctive character to Langdon, and we want to help build stronger local relationships by linking neighbours, boosting economic and social relationships and contributing to local causes. When you come into any one of our businesses, please make note of the campaign posters on display that will show you what we are supporting When you go to drink or dine at The Langdon Crossing, take a moment to flip though the table top menus. You will see all the members of this business affair campaign proudly displayed in the toppers. In October, we will be celebrating the wrap up of this 6 month campaign by hosting a fundraiser night at the Langdon Crossing. All money raised will go back into the community of Langdon. Have you started your Langdon Shopping Challenge yet? As you can probably tell, we at the Newsy Neighbour are extremely passionate about supporting local business. This is one of 3 shopping challenges we are organizing in the wonderful communities we serve. If you didn’t read the other articles, you may be wondering... what is a shopping challenge? Well, several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms – continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. So with that being said, we REALLY want to encourage you to shop locally and we are prepared to reward you for doing it! You just need to spend $10 at 8 of the 17 stores on the shopping challenge form and you are entered to win one of several AMAZING prizes worth thousands! Where to start? Well... everyone needs groceries, so start by making sure to buy your groceries at Buy-Low Foods. The only thing you have to do differently than every other time you go there, is get the cashier to initial your shopping challenge form. Are you thinking about selling your home? Guy Cooley from Re/Max or Gail Schmidt from CIR Realty can do a CMA on your home for you and that qualifies you for a signature. Have you been thinking lately that you deserve a YOU day? Why not start by visiting Never Ending Stories to browse the thousands of gently used books? Find the next romance, mystery or even self-help book to indulge yourself in. Next, you should take yourself to J&K Nails for a much needed manicure to touch up those gardening hands. Invite your mom to go with you, she can get a pedicure or some waxing done – and her own shopping challenge signature! On your way to Sandstone Pharmacy to do some shopping (because you can find so many incredible things at Sandstone!), make sure to treat yourself to an AMAZING cupcake or some frozen yogurt at My Bakery Shop. That is 4 signatures in just a couple hours. There is still time to get into that bikini-ready shape for summer; you just need to call Corrie at D.O.C Personal Training and he will let you know exactly what you have to do. To celebrate your new body, you can swing by Kimmer Country Market to get some fireworks. Did you know that even buying GAS will qualify you for a signature? You can get gas at Kimmer and at Wenstrom Equipment (where you can also get an RZT Razor to help you mow your huge Langdon backyard!). Are you tired of always having to fill up your propane tank when you want to have a BBQ? Call Cesare’s Plumbing; he can get you a gas line directly to your BBQ. Since you are adding a gas line to your house, why not take a look at upgrading your windows or finally replacing that broken window with Langdon Glass? And since we are still talking about your house, when was the last time you had your shingles inspected? Call Ian at Langdon Roofing; he will inspect them for you! Are you finally ready to get that fantastic business going that you have been dreaming about? Just do it! The Newsy Neighbour Welcomes Rolly Ashdown!! Rolly Ashdown, Councillor I am in my second term as a Rocky View County Councillor for Division 4 which includes Langdon. email: rashdown@rockyview.ca 403-999-2722 Cell, 403-936-0777 Res
This is my first time submitting something to the Newsy Neighbour so I want to thank the pub-
lisher for allowing me to take part and thank you for going to the effort of distributing information to the nice folks of Langdon and Rocky View County in general. I am Rolly Ashdown and I am in my second term as a Rocky View County Councilor for Division 4, which includes Langdon. Recently, I can think of three items that are newsworthy. First, the Area Structure Plan for Langdon was approved. Secondly, Council approved the budget to add an “enhanced service” officer to the Strathmore RCMP detachment for Langdon and the area. Thirdly, the County has embarked on a feasibility study to examine the possibility of introducing a “Green Cart” program to add to the “Blue Cart” and “Black Cart” program. I will try to explain briefly but remember, I can always answer your questions if you send me an email to rashdown@rockyview.ca or call me on my cell at 403-9992722 or at home at 403-936-0777. The Area Structure Plan is a type of roadmap for development of an area that County Administration refers to when evaluating Development Applications. I was hoping it would be more of a visionary document that might have included stronger storm water planning and transportation considerations, but it ended up leaning more towards a Development Application Border-style of document. There is also a need for that and it can be added to later, perhaps my expectations were a little too lofty. It replaces the old ASP that

was originally written in 1999 so it was definitely due; they are supposed to last about 10 years. Thank you to all who took part in the process. The province supplies policing service to rural areas like Rocky View County, which Langdon is part of. They contract the RCMP and the detachment that looks after this area is Strathmore. I have heard from many of the residents that they would like to see more police presence in and around Langdon and have been trying to accommodate even though it isn’t a county responsibility. There is a program offered by the province if a municipality is willing to pay additional amounts to get more officers than what is allotted called an “Enhanced Service”. After asking for many years, I finally got enough support from Council to include it in the general budget, so we will see more of the RCMP around the area soon. Last but not least, the green bins. The County uses City of Calgary landfills and in the not too distant future, they are going to be heavily surcharging or banning organics from loads. The solid waste people at the County are investigating methods of dealing with the impending problem and are seeking resident opinion. There is a survey going on right now; I did it today and it takes very little time, please take part. You can take the survey at http://fluidsurveys.com/s/ rvclangdon/. That’s it for now, more in the next issue! Rolly

Dental X-Rays – Why Your Dentist Requests Them If we’re not debating the pros and cons of fluoride exposure, there’s another topic that gets people all fired-up and that’s the issue of dental x-rays. Used as a diagnostic tool by dentists for over a hundred years, the need and safety surrounding the capturing of images is a common subject for conversation that can leave patients wondering what’s best for their health and teeth. Are Dental X-Rays Safe? The Alberta Dental Association and College, along with the Canadian Dental Association have a stringent protocol in place to ensure that all dental facilities providing x-ray services not only use technology that has been inspected and registered but also requires staff to wear dosimeters (devices used to measure cumulative dose of ionizing radiation) to measure exposure to radiation. The dosimeters are sent to a licenced facility (often Health Canada) to be reviewed and logged – and any exposure issues are acted on immediately. Safety measures are in place to ensure patient and

staff health - and equipment is serviced regularly to meet association requirements. Why Are Dental X-Rays Taken? Dental X-rays are what enables your dentist to see what is going on inside the tooth and below the gum line. Infection, root fractures, impaction and abnormal tissue growth can’t always be detected by the naked eye, as in many cases the problem is actually inside the tooth or within the jaw bone. Your dentist can do a visual examination of a tooth and perform certain tests that will give some clues as to the tooth’s condition – but without an x-ray, a full and accurate diagnosis isn’t possible. Dental Decay that forms between teeth can be missed during a visual exam as no matter how great your dentist is, nobody can see the tight spaces between teeth and more times than not, a dental explorer can’t fit in these spaces. But an x-ray can reveal the health of tissue between teeth and show if decay is present. Specific x-rays are taken depending on the information your dentist needs to collect. A panoramic, or panorex x-ray will reveal every tooth present – whether erupted or still below the gum line. This type of x-ray is incredibly useful in monitoring the eruption of permanent teeth and determining the position and health of wisdom teeth. Langdon Dental

I Am A... Banana From The I Am A.... Series | Fruits & Vegetables By Kathryn Hartwell
Ever been to New Guinea? I have! Hanna Banana, at your service. Recent evidence points to the likelihood that my earliest ancestors were first domesticated there, near a place called the Kuk Swamp (not a particularly nice neighbourhood), possibly as far back as 8000 BC. Not long after, other, independent species of bananas were domesticated elsewhere in Southeast Asia, including India, where an ancient Buddhist story mentions bananas the size of an elephant’s tusk.
History
Eventually, we found our way to Africa – in fact, the word banana is of West African origin, from the Wolof language, then passed into English via Spanish or Portuguese. Bananas soon became popular in the Middle East; as Islam spread, so did we. During the medieval period, when most people in Europe were eating – well, I’m not sure what they were eating, but whatever it was, it wasn’t very appetizing – folks in Islamic Granada were downing the most delicious bananas in the world. Bananas were introduced to the Americas by Portuguese sailors who brought us with them from West Africa in the 16th century (and no, there is no country in Central America called Chiquita!). Most North Americans think of bananas as a slender, oblong, yellow-skinned fruit, suitable for slicing on peanut butter sandwiches and on top of ice cream and yogurt. While these are, indeed, bananas (I for one am very proud of my smooth yellow skin, and take some offense at being called a “common desert variety” – them’s fightin’ words in New Guinea!), we are far from the only type available. There are fuzzy bananas with skin the colour of pink bubblegum. There are green-and white-striped bananas, with pulp the colour of orange sherbet. There are bananas that, when cooked, taste just like strawberries. The Chinese grow an aromatic variety called the Go San Heong, which means “you can smell it from the next mountain.” Whatever the variety, we are the tallest of all the world’s herbaceous flowering plants. Note that we’re plants, not trees – this matters (at least it does to me), in the way the difference between field hockey and ice hockey matters to Sri Lankans and Canadians. We can reach just under eight meters (25 feet) in height. My siblings and I develop in the heart of the plant, in a large hanging, tiered cluster called “hands.” There are up to 20 of us in a tier – growing up can be a crowded affair when you’re a banana.
table into a lead container, note that tiny, tiny amounts of the potassium-40 isotope are found in naturally occurring potassium, certainly not enough for that bunch of bananas, or once you’ve eaten them, to start glowing in the dark). Speaking of glowing, those are the reports we receive from people who prefer chomping us to taking antacid medicine. We work our magic in two ways: first, we have substances that activate the cells that compose the stomach lining, encouraging them to produce a thicker protective mucus barrier against stomach acids. Second, we have something called protease inhibitors (sounds like a fancy name for nightclub bouncers, doesn’t it?), which help eliminate stomach bacteria that have been pinpointed as a primary cause of stomach ulcers. We’re also a smart choice if you suffer from elimination problems. A bout of diarrhea can quickly deplete your body of important electrolytes. We can replenish your store of potassium, one of the most important electrolytes, which helps regulate heart function as well as fluid balance. In addition, we contain pectin, a soluble fibre (called a hydrocolloid) that can help normalize movement through the digestive tract and ease constipation. And if that wasn’t enough, we’re an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide (go ahead, try to say that quickly a couple of times, I dare you), a compound called a prebiotic, because it nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon. These beneficial bacteria produce vitamins and digestive enzymes that improve your ability to absorb nutrients, plus compounds that protect you against unfriendly microorganisms. When fructooligosaccharides are fermented by these friendly bacteria, not only do numbers of probiotic bacteria increase, so too does the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Plus, gastrointestinal transit time is lessened, decreasing the risk of colon cancer. Not bad for a simple banana, eh? We are also thoughtfully pre-packaged by Mother Nature, with a creamy inside and an attractive outside (if I do say so myself). There are lots of ways you can eat me – to help you with some ideas; I’ve put together a few recipes that feature the noble banana. I think you’ll find every one of them yummy – enjoy! Hanna Banana
Health
Bananas and potassium go together like milk and cookies. We contain a whopping 467 mg of potassium (and only one mg of sodium), making us ideal for people who suffer from high blood pressure or atherosclerosis. In fact, as far as I know, we’re the only fruit that can claim to be radioactive (wait, wait, before you don a hazmat suit and toss those bananas in the bowl on your dining room

BANANA MUFFINS
There is just something warm and homey about banana muffins. This is one of the best banana recipes and a great way to use over ripe bananas. 1/2 cup (120mL) butter or margarine 1 cup (240mL) sugar 2 large eggs 2 large ripe bananas, mashed 2 cups (480mL) flour 1 tsp (5mL) salt 1 tsp (5mL) baking powder 1/2 tsp (2mL) baking soda 1 cup (240mL) buttermilk 1/2 cup (120mL) chopped walnuts 1 tsp (5mL) vanilla extract Preheat oven to 400°F. Beat together butter and sugar at medium speed using a mixer, or by hand, until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well each time. Add bananas and beat until smooth. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Alternate stirring in part of the flour mixture and part of the buttermilk into the egg mixture until all is added and mixture is slightly moistened. Do not over-mix. Batter will not look completely smooth. Stir in nuts and vanilla. Grease 12 standard size muffin tins or use paper cupcake cups. Spoon batter into muffin cups, filling 2/3 full. Bake 15-18 minutes until lightly golden. Cool muffin pan slightly before turning out the muffins. Cool muffins on a rack before serving. Bananaramma!! A single banana has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals of an average size apple. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe it’s time to change that well-known phrase to, “A banana a day keeps the doctor away!”
Add the ground beef and fry at high heat for 3 minutes. Pour in the tomato sauce and add the capers and olives, if desired. Cook 15 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Wash the string beans and steam until tender. Beat the eggs, adding salt and pepper to taste. Butter the sides and bottom of a round casserole and melt the remaining butter in the bottom. Pour in half of the beaten eggs and cook over medium heat for about 1 minute or until slightly set. Cover the eggs with one-third of the banana slices, following with layers of half the ground meat and half the string beans. Add another layer of bananas, the remainder of the ground beef, another layer of beans, and top with bananas. Pour the rest of the beaten eggs over the top. Cook over low heat for 15 minutes, uncovered, being careful not to let the omelet burn. Then place in a preheated 350°F oven for 10 to 15 minutes to brown the top. Serve with rice and beans. Very excellent for lunch! One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to down a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system. Cheer up! According to a recent survey among people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a protein the body converts into serotonin, which aids in relaxation, improves mood, and generally make you feel happier. High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood, helpful in cases of anemia, they are a good source of vitamin C, potassium and dietary fibre. And, great for athletic and fitness activities because they replenish necessary carbohydrates, glycogen, and body fluids burned during exercise.
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect food to combat high blood pressure. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.
PUERTO RICAN BEEF BANANA OMELETTE
The flavour of the bananas compliments the tartness of the green olives and capers. This oven-baked omelet makes a meal hearty enough for dinner. 3 very ripe bananas Oil for frying 1 onion, chopped 1/2 green pepper, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1/2 pound (454 grams) ground beef 1/4 cup (60 mL) tomato sauce 1 tbsp (15 mL) capers 1 tbsp (15 mL) sliced green olives (optional) Salt and pepper 1/2 pound green beans, fresh or frozen, cut in 3-inch pieces 6 eggs 1/4 cup (60 mL) butter Preheat the oven to 350°F. Peel the bananas, cut into 2-inch thick lengthwise slices, and fry in oil until golden brown. Remove, drain, and keep warm. In a frying pan, sauté the onion, green pepper, and garlic until soft but not brown.

By Martin Shields Recently, we all heard that a popular chain of restaurants with several locations in Alberta
decided to source their beef from the United States. Their rationale for this was that the American raised beef was certified to be humane by a private organization. It would seem that the executives at this restaurant chain needed to be convinced that Alberta beef producers raise their cattle humanely. As a proud Albertan and Canadian, I am very concerned with this poorly thought out decision. The executives clearly did not do their research, because if they had, they would have discovered quite quickly that Alberta beef producers have some of the best and most humane practices for handling cattle in the world. We know that Alberta beef is humanely raised, notwithstanding any special certification or label. We see it among our neighbours in our communities that they take great care of the animals in their charge. Unlike the restaurant chain in question, my office did the research necessary to understand the great lengths that our hard-working Albertan cattle feeders go to, to ensure that they are meeting the highest standards for humane treatment. I reached out to Bryan Walton, CEO of the Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association (ACFA) http://cattlefeeders.ca/ as well as General Manager of its parent organization, the National Cattle Feeders’ Association (NCFA) http://nationalcattlefeeders.ca/. He was more than happy to review the history and extensive policies/practices for humane cattle treatment in our province. To start, Alberta cattle feeders have met, and continue to meet the national standards for humane treatment as recognized by the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC). This is the national body that sets standards and codes of practice for the humane treatment of farm animals across Canada.

Beef
The NCFA recently developed a new recognized Canadian Feedlot Animal Care Assessment tool for auditing animal welfare. This will allow them to be even more diligent in monitoring animal welfare across their membership. This is clearly an industry that has the humane treatment of cattle as one of its core principles. If you ask any Albertan or Canadian that handles cattle for a living, they will be the first to tell you that it is in everyone’s best interest to ensure that they are treating their cattle well. I have a great amount of faith in our cattle producers and feeders, and I trust them to do what’s right, and I know the great majority of Albertans and Canadians feel the same way. I choose Alberta beef, I choose Canadian beef, because it’s handled humanely, and it’s the best beef in the world.

New Look Calgary Stampeders! As much as it hurts to say this, the Calgary Stampeders will not win 14 games this season.
I'm not going to sugar coat the facts in this article. While there are many reasons for Stampeder fans to be optimistic heading into a new season, there are just as many (or more) to be pessimistic.
Here are the facts!
The Stamps will not finish in first place in the CFL Western division. They should be a playoff team but even that is far from guaranteed. As the old saying goes, this organization will take a step back before it takes two steps forward.
The Calgary Stampeders will not be able to replace receiver Eric Rogers. His size, his hands, his speed and his age made him a hot commodity for NFL teams. You just can't replace the best receiver in the CFL! It was not a surprise when his home town San Francisco 49ers offered him a healthy signing bonus. The injury plagued Jeff Fuller is also gone while veterans Marquay McDaniel and Joe West are now 32 and will be pressed by younger recruits like Carlton Mitchell, a receiver out of South Florida with 16 NFL games on his resume. Former Hamilton Tiger Cat Bakari Grant was a free agent signing in the off season and he will have big shoes to fill.
The Stampeders lost the best receiver in the league to the NFL. The best running back retired because of concussion issues. The best and most respected head coach in the league stepped aside and handed the reigns over to his apprentice. The assistant general manager and top American scout jumped ship to Regina. The defensive coordinator bolted to Toronto, while the defensive captain retired and the team's inspirational leader left because of free agency.
The strength of the Stampeder receiving core could be on the national side. Anthony Parker is coming off a career year. Simon Charbonneau-Campeau is healthy, second year receiver Lamar Durant looks ready to take off and a lot of eyes will be on 2016 second round pick Juwan Brescacin. Brescacin is a big target at 6'3, with above average speed.
The on-field loss of Eric Rogers, Jon Cornish, John Hufnagel, John Murphy, Rich Stubler, Juwan Simpson and Keon Raymond would mean playoff death for most teams in the Canadian Football League, but for the new-look Stampeders, they see it as an opportunity.
Left tackle Dan Federkeil is a ratio changer on the offensive line, but he has only started 9, 12 and 11 games in the last three season. It's clear his 32 year old body can't make it through an entire season. The Stamps depth on the offensive line was severely tested last season and the organization really didn't address this issue in free agency or the CFL draft. If the line can stay healthy, they will be okay, but it's certainly not the strength of the offense.
"We need to get younger," was the clear and concise postmortem from pending head coach Dave Dickenson after the Stamps were dismantled by the Eskimos in the West Final last season. "We need to be faster and we need to be bigger."
The battle to replace Jon Cornish is going to be very intriguing. Jerome Messam was re-signed in the off season but the organization is not committed to starting a national at this position. Tory Harrison was the team's rookie of the year nominee in 2015 and the team wants to give Lache (pronounced Lake) Seastrunk a good hard look in preseason. Seastrunk was selected in the sixth round (186th overall) by the Washington Redskins in the 2014 National Football League draft. He has been on the practice roster for the Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans and he attended training camp with the Dallas Cowboys in 2015. Seastrunk played two seasons (2012-13) at Baylor and surpassed the 1,000-yard in rushing both years. The team will have options in 2016, but overall success of the running game will depend on the health of the offensive line. The only reason you can't get too negative about the offense this season is Bo Levi Mitchell. Mitchell had a superb year last

1010 Westridge Road. Strathmore, AB T1P1H8 season (4,551 passing yards and 26 TD passes) and will build on that this year. He's just entering his prime at age 26 and after a vigorous off-season program, he will be right back among the elite this year. The CFL is a quarterback driven league and the Stamps have the best young QB in the league. The biggest concern I have with the Stampeders this season is on the defensive side of the ball. Former defensive coordinator Rich Stubler liked smaller, athletic players, while new DC Devonne Claybrooks wants to go bigger and younger. The Stampeders will miss the leadership of Juwan Simpson and Keon Raymond but these changes had to be made. Free agent middle linebacker Taylor Reed is only 24 and was an emerging star in Hamilton. The organization is also excited about first round draft pick (6th overall) Alex Singleton, a three year starter at Montana State. Singleton is American born and was on the Ottawa Redblacks negotiation list, until he realized his mother had a Canadian passport, and became eligible for the 2016 draft. The old ‘Keon Raymond position’—more accurately a rover, is also up for grabs. Joe Burnett is the leader for that position, but he has big shoes to fill. It will be another great battle to watch in training camp. While the Stampeders kicking game is solid with Rene Paredes and Rob Maver, long snapper Randy Chevrier is no longer part of the mix and there are still many questions on special teams. There will be big pressure on special team’s coordinator Mark Kilam this season. The Stamps gave up far too many big plays last season, while
their own return game has been average at best. Like most Stampeder fans, I have all the confidence in the world in new head coach Dave Dickenson. However, he is not John Hufnagel! There will be a transition. This team will have some highs and most certainly a few lows with the new head coach. Dickenson says he will lean on Hufnagel when needed, hopefully fans will give him some time to grow in the position knowing Huf is upstairs in the GM and president's chair. The biggest loss of the off season may not be felt till next year. Assistant GM John Murphy was the life line for the team's international recruiting. While most of his work is reflected at this year's training camp, the pressure is now on Hufnagel and his son Cole, to make sure the Stamps remain one of the most feared organizations in the CFL.

Dear Class of 2016; Leave the Map at Home By Gaylene Smith
It’s graduation season.
Soon, students with be adorning their caps and gowns, and walking across the stage, picking up their diplomas, degrees or certificates, to the applause of friends, family and faculty. Traditional amongst all the pomp and circumstance, there will be a Commencement Speech – words of wisdom and inspiration offered to the graduates to bolster them up and motivate them on their way to joining the real world. Now, I’ve been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to cross the stage in a cap and gown splendor three times. It stands to reason that I’ve also sat through three of these Commencement addresses. I remember nothing. Not one word. Three speeches that were given to empower and motivate me, and all I have from them is a vague recollection that one of speakers was an athlete – maybe a synchronized swimmer, maybe. Now, knowing I won’t be tossing a cap in the air ever again, I have gathered the advice I wish I would have heard, or at least remembered from my graduation. Dear Graduating Class of 2016, Congratulations, you have just completed one of the easiest stages of your life. Celebrate your achievements, enjoy your graduation, but please, by all that is holy, do not make this the best day of your life. Don’t even make it one of the top ten best days of your life. Really, it shouldn’t even appear on the list of the best days of your life. The best truly is yet to come if you are just brave enough to go and get it. Oh, but what is to come? Life. Life is to come in all its splendid, messy, happy, depressing, ugly and beautiful glory. Life should be an adventure. Imagine you’re on a cruise and day after day after day you do the same thing; get up at the same time; eat the same food; read the same book; have the same conversation with the same person. Life on repeat. Ya, that’s not much of a life and certainly not an adventure. It might
be comfortable, it might feel safe, but really, what a waste. Toss aside your preplanned, neatly organized map of life and just keep the destination in mind. Get out there and live life to its fullest. Don’t take any job just to say you have one. Get a survival job if you have to, but keep marching towards your dreams. Think of the Hollywood elite. Kanye West worked at The Gap. Mathew Morrison from Glee also worked at The Gap. Harrison Ford was a carpenter. Eva Mendes sold hotdogs at a mall. Whoopi Goldberg was a makeup artist – for the dead. Honesty, she worked for a funeral home, applying makeup to the deceased. It was a bit of a dead-end career (pun intended). Now imagine if they had given up; decided that the safe paycheque was enough and that maybe the casting and music directors that kept saying “no” were right. Star Wars without Han Solo – terrible, and no Indiana Jones, say it ain’t so. The View without Whoopi - dull. Award shows without Kanye, okay maybe that’s not the best example. JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, was told by an editor not to quit her day job. So she didn’t, but she didn’t quit her dream either and the last two books in the Harry Potter series went on to set the record as the two fastest selling books in history. Oh and JK also went on to become a billionaire… yes with a “B” billionaire. Life is full of obstacles. People and situations are going to get in your way. People are going to say no to you. You aren’t going to get every job you interview for. Bills will pile up and you will need to pay them. This is the messy, depressing and ugly part of life. It is up to you how you deal with those obstacles. Are you going to quit when you come across a road block on the road to life or are you going to go and blaze a path around it? Sometimes, when we are navigating around the roadblocks, we find things we would have missed out on otherwise; new friends, new opportunities, new passions and goals. These are the times life is splendid, happy and beautiful. It takes courage to go off path, to step away from the safe and familiar. Off path, however might just be where you find your adventure. So go ahead and be brave, take the path less traveled. And if you happened to surpass JK Rowling’s sales record, feel free to make a detour to my house. Congratulations. I wish you all an adventure to last your lifetime

Things Women Need To Know About Men
All we need is one pair of work shoes and one pair of church shoes. Don't ask us what we're thinking. Men can think about nothing for hours. Don't try and be subtle, just say what's on your mind and be honest. We do stupid things. This will never change, so don't try to force it, just learn to live with it. Not all men like sports and cars. Don't try to get us to set our best friends up with your girlfriends. He wouldn't do it to me, and I won't do it to him. Don't try and find answers to what men want in magazines like Cosmo, just ask us. Don't be surprised if we don't know what we want. If you wouldn't watch the action movie with us, then don't ask us to go to the chick flick with you.
Quickly brown, but do not cook through, 1 1/2 pounds of diced chuck steak or another cheaper cut of meat, in oil. Remove meat with slotted spoon and set aside. Add: 2 medium diced onions 2 diced bell peppers and cook until soft. Add 32 ounces canned tomatoes 4 tbsp sweet pickle relish (this is the key ingredient) 1 tsp basil and salt and pepper to taste Add meat and bring mixture to boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer 45 minutes. Stir in about four cups of your favourite cooked beans, or about three 15-ounce cans. I find the white beans work the best. Heat through and serve. This recipe was found in the Star News Newspaper and this particular recipe was published on March 20th, 1983.
I decided to change calling the bathroom “The John” and renamed it “The Jim.” I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning. I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes 1,500 days in a row. QUALITY WORK, PERFORMED BY CERTIFIED TECHNICIANS.

Life Lesson on the Golf Course… from a Non-Golfer “Golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half inch course… the space between your ears.” ~Bobby Jones
As I sit here with thoughts of the upcoming Women Talk going through my head, the sun is shining and I can hear a neighbour cutting their grass. As the mind often does, my thoughts begin to wander - a wandering mind is a creative mind… that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
engaging in a good activity for the wrong reason. In trying to experience the joy felt by someone else, I had forgotten to remember what made me feel good. I forgot to look for ways to enjoy exercise, social time and the thrill of learning something new by discovering things that I liked to do.
Now what was I saying? Oh yes! My mind began to wander and here is where it went… I thought about the stories women share at Women Talk and how this is a chance to connect with each other and learn more about ourselves. My mind then flitted past memories of having this same secure feeling as a teenager, laying on the ground with friends and discovering images in the clouds. Next came a smile as I recalled the smell of fresh cut grass. Mmmm… grass and friendships. Wandering on, my mind was led to a decision I made a few years ago: to learn to golf. I was then brought full circle as I suddenly realized that golf had taught me an important life lesson, a lesson I uncovered in that very moment. What did I learn?
Instead of being inspired by someone else’s experience, I tried to make their experience my own. Wow! This brought be back to Women Talk where women share their stories. Some stories are entertaining. Some take hold of your heart. Some are inspirational. Some make you pause and think. But all of them are real. Being real is something deep and meaningful. Being real means choosing what is right for you.
It starts 10 years ago when I brought back a St. Andrews Golf Course cap from the UK for a friend who is a golfing enthusiast. He was super-duper, over-the-moon excited. Turned out that this is a pretty famous course and he wore the cap with pride (apparently to the envy of his fellow golfers).
So, play golf if that’s what you enjoy. Be inspired if that’s important to you. Create connections if that brings you happiness. Whatever you choose, choose to be real.
His passion for golf inspired me to give it a go. I took lessons, bought clubs, purchased a membership and played every week. I even joined the Women’s Golf Club and was the Communications Director. I jumped in with both feet (and a putter). After my second year ‘on the course’, I asked for a golf cart for Christmas and received a really nice one but by then, my enthusiasm had waned. (Anyone interested in buying a dusty, never-used golf cart?)
Arnold Palmer says that “golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated” and I must agree. I believe that life can be the same way but by sharing the ‘realness’ of who we are with people who support and understand us, life can be a bit less complicated.

I decided I was too busy to continue golfing but it dawned on me during my creative mind-wander, that this wasn’t quite true. That five-and-a-half inch course (space between my ears) said golf would give me exercise. It said this would be a great social outing. It said I would feel great learning a new set of skills. It said I would be able to support local fundraising efforts by participating in golf tournaments and be confident on the course when doing so. It said I would be as enthusiastic about the game as my friend. But alas, while this may be true for others, none of it was true for me. I didn’t feel happy on the course; actually, golfing felt like a chore. Why? Because I wasn’t hitting golf balls (and regularly looking for them in the bush!) out of a true desire to play the game. I was

Genie Two men were adrift in a lifeboat following a dramatic escape from a burning freight vessel. While rummaging through the boat’s provisions, one of the men stumbled across an old lamp. Secretly hoping that a Genie would appear, he rubbed the lamp vigorously. To the amazement of the castaways, one did come forth. This particular Genie, however, stated that she could only deliver one wish, not the standard three.
For Residential and Commercial Applications
Without much thought to the matter, the man blurted out, “Make the entire ocean into beer!” The Genie clapped her hands with a deafening crash, and the entire ocean turned into the finest brew ever sampled by mortals. Simultaneously, the Genie vanished to her freedom. Only the gentle lapping of beer on the hull broke the stillness as the two men considered their circumstances. The other looked disgustedly at the one whose wish had been granted. After a long tension-filled moment, he spoke: “Nice going, jerk! Now we’re going to have to pee in the boat.”

puter or tablet time. Research is telling us that kids from birth to two years of age should have no screen time and children three to five years of age should only have one hour of screen time per day. Something else we probably know is that kids love to play and it is good for them. Play can take the form of structured or unstructured activities. Structured and unstructured activities each play an important part in a child’s overall development. Both types of play can take place inside and outside and can involve the child playing independently or with peers.
Let’s Unplug and Play
Structured Play: Generally has a set of rules and each person has a specific role. Some examples of structured play include: - Hide and Seek - Tag - Board games - Red Light Green Light - Various organized and unorganized sports
Expressions The Dance Gallery Dance classes for anybody, with ANY BODY!
Structured Play helps kids learn how to follow rules, play cooperatively with peers, learn turn taking skills, get physically active, learn sportsmanship, teamwork and develop social skills.
Summer Dance and Activity Camps
Unstructured Play: Generally does not have rules and relies on the child’s imagination. Some examples include: - Dress up - Playing with toys (i.e. cars, dolls, Play-Doh, etc.) - Puppets - Wooden blocks - Painting, colouring on blank pieces of paper
Adventures of Elsa and Anna Calling all Minions Teddy Bears Picnic A Star Wars Summer Circus Camp Circus and Aerial Intensive Positively Princess Camp
Unstructured Play helps develop a child’s imagination, decision making skills, socialization, problem solving and gets them to explore their environment. Having trouble finding a balance of structured and unstructured play? Check out this CBC article for more information about the types of play, and on how to find a balance of the two: http:// www.cbc.ca/parents/play/view/free-play-in-a-structured-worldhow-to-balance-structured-and-unstructured In the County of Wheatland, we are fortunate to have access to both Parent Link and 5 For Life coalition, who offer both structured and unstructured play opportunities. Doreen Bonato is a Mother of 4, including triplets. She has been cooking since the age of 10 when her mother introduced her to the kitchen. She has lived in Chestermere since 1999 and runs a small laundry business. She has cooked for the food trucks around Calgary and continues to enjoy teaching her children to cook and also catered her son’s wedding. Doreen's passion for cooking shows in the many dishes she prepares for family and friends.
I know many children would love to cook with their dad, so in this month’s Father’s Day Issue in the Kooking Korner, we have an old favourite and certainly a recipe a kid can whip up with their father! The classic Grilled Cheese creation is something a Dad and child will enjoy doing together and will not be too difficult.
Lay the bread out on a breadboard or on the counter. Spread the butter on one side of the bread only. Place the bread, butter-side-down onto skillet bottom and add 1 slice of cheese. Cook your sandwiches at medium-low heat for 2-3 minutes, or until the bread is toasty golden and the cheese has melted. The second side will cook faster than the first, so watch carefully. My husband suggested a third flip for even browning while cooking with our son Alex. Remove the grilled cheese from the pan and place it on cutting board, slicing it diagonally for a nice look and an easy first bite! Enjoy it plain, or squeeze ketchup into a mini bowl for dipping. Kooking Korner wishes all dads a great Father’s Day! Keep calm and kook on!
If the child is over 11, they could do this on their own! Of course, a mom and child could make this for their dad on Father’s day, and believe me, he will find it to be salty, gooey, crisp, buttery, and comforting in all the right ways. What you will need for two sandwiches: Four slices of your favourite bread (any bread works) Cheese slices facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Russian Borscht – Tutorial A Recipe by Kathryn Hartwell
I love beets and always have. I remember as a young child spending time at my grandmother’s farm just outside of Acme, Alberta. She had an enormous garden with every imaginable vegetable, herb, and flower. Her sunflower plants were the largest I’ve ever seen to this day. We would spend hours out in grandma’s garden of wonder, playing hide and go seek, digging fresh carrots and picking peas. I will never forget the flavours of those vegetables. But my favourite of all were grandma’s beets and beet tops (steamed with a sprinkling of vinegar and salt). I so miss that incredible garden and the old farm!
on that toasty look, then removed it from the pot and let it cool a bit before I cut it up into smaller pieces. As it is cooling I peeled the carrots, beets (using rubber gloves, otherwise you will have pink fingers for the day), chopped the cabbage, diced the garlic, and chopped the dill (mine was frozen, which I had saved from my garden).
Grandma knew I loved her beets and when she knew I was coming for a visit she would pour her love into her “too incredible for words” “Russian Borscht”. It was heaven on earth. Luckily for me, and today lucky for you, I can share this special recipe handed down through the years, as Granny is long gone to heaven. The ingredients are just as you would imagine them to be: fresh beets, carrots, cabbage, stewing beef, onion, fresh dill, fresh garlic and grandma’s secret ingredients--vinegar and sauerkraut (homemade, of course).
Then I threw everything back into the pot and covered with water – actually, I used one litre of beef broth and 1 litre of vegetable broth and finished by covering with water. After I had done this, I discovered, which I do every time I make my Borscht, that one big pot is too small. I find the soup too thick—almost like stew—and I prefer a brothier texture. So I poured half into another big pot and then added about a cup of water to each pot (or more if you prefer). You can always adjust the flavours at the end.
She never used a recipe for this or any of her other creations; they were ingrained in her brain. It was always a mystery to me as I watched her create. But for the rest of us, here is list of the ingredients we require. About 6 good-sized beets 3 large carrots About a pound of stewing beef 1 large onion 3 cloves fresh garlic, chopped Lots of fresh dill – this to me is what makes the Borscht what it is! Salt and pepper to taste 2-3 tbsp red wine vinegar (grandma used just regular vinegar) – the choice is up to your pallet. ½ to 1 cup sauerkraut I browned the beef and onion in a large pot until the beef took

thenewsyneighbour.com
Cover your pots and let the magic begin. Do not add the sauerkraut and vinegar until the soup has simmered for at least an hour – the key is the longer you simmer the soup, the more intense the flavour becomes. Make sure to taste the soup – you will know if you need a little tang or not and add a little at a time until you get your desired flavour. You can experiment with this – use your imagination. Sometimes I add cream right at the end; I always add a spoonful of sour cream into my bowl just before I’m about to blissfully enjoy this incredible creation of Grandma’s. Rules for Dating My Daughter Rule One: If you pull into my driveway and honk, you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up. Rule Two: You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter's body, I will remove them. Rule Three: I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys
of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: you may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist. Rule Four: I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without utilizing a "barrier method" of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier! Rule Five: I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out

with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry. Rule Six: As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process than can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don't you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car? Rule Seven: The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to introduce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a parka - zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided. Movies which feature chain saws are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folk’s homes are better. Rule Eight: Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a potbellied, balding, middle-aged, dimwitted has-been, but on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless god of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Rule Nine: Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming in over a rice paddy near Hanoi. As soon as you pull into the driveway, you should exit the car with both hands in plain sight. Speak the perimeter password, announce in a clear voice that you have brought my daughter home safely and early, and then return to your car - there is no need for you to come inside. EXCITING NEWS FOR THE “The Real Estate REPs” You just never know what is going to happen tomorrow. There are new opportunities and surprises everyday - life is ever changing. I have certainly learned that throughout my life and career. Well, as it seems, The Real Estate REPs have surprises and changes of our own. Debbie Enslen is moving on to an opportunity that was just too good to refuse with a new brokerage. She was an incredibly valuable member of the team and we will miss her, but there will still be lots of opportunity for us to work together. Debbie moving on however, opened up new doors for Michelle Eldjarnson, the newest member of the REPs; how exciting! Michelle is a bright light and brings energy and experience to our group; she specializes in Chestermere and Langdon. Speaking of Real Estate… are you considering moving? To a different town maybe? Worried about transferring your kids to a new school? I suspect that most of us can remember changing schools at one time or another. My experience came when my parents announced we were moving to a new town, new house, new friends and new school... yikes! That was scary! I survived it, and I didn't have anything too traumatic happen; but it was a memory. There is a lot to think about when selling your current home and buying another one, including changing schools. As parents, when it came time to move our family to Strathmore, we planned a bit ahead and tried to make the transition a little less stressful. It was summer and school was out, so we decided to allow the

kids to go play at the school playground where they would be attending in the fall. It only took a couple of afternoons, but sure enough, they met some kids! So come the first day of school, and they already had friends. It really worked! Here are some tips and ideas to keep in mind when getting ready to buy you new home and change schools: • Research schools in the area you’re moving to. • Talk to the principal and teacher of the school your child is leaving. • Request or take a collection of your child’s work to bring to the new school. • Talk to the principal of the new school. • Ask about strategies the new school has for helping new children adjust to the school – a buddy system, for example. • If your child has special needs, talk to the new school about its facilities. If you’re moving interstate, your child’s abilities and eligibility for assistance might need to be re-assessed. • Make a scrapbook of people, activities and memories from your child’s old school. • Make a contact list of friends from your child’s old school and neighbourhood. • Plan a farewell party. • Buy the new books, if needed. • Walk around the grounds and buildings of the new school with your child. This will help your child get to know where the important things are located. • Talk to your new neighbours. Perhaps your child can meet some classmates for a play date before the first day at school. And a SMILE: Four high school students, afflicted with spring fever, skipped morning classes. After lunch, they reported to the teacher that they had a flat tire. Much to their relief, she smiled and said, "Well, you missed a test so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper." Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she asked: "First Question: Which tire was flat?” If you need any advice, a free market analysis, or just want to go for coffee and chat about current market conditions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We have over 40 years combined experience and we are incredibly passionate Real Estate professionals, offering our services to Strathmore, Langdon, Chestermere & Area. “OUR GOAL” Making Life Breathable
We shatter like glass, we tear like paper. We sink like a ship and drown like an anchor. Say there’s a rich woman, she wears a gown, owns a crown. she is no more worthy of love then the poor boy sleeping in the streets. She is no more deserving of the food than the alcoholic mother taking care of two children; her riches do not satisfy her needs, her happiness relies on an item.

Your riches do not equal your value. You know - I wonder what it would be like, in a world of no war, where our sins do not define who we are. If I could walk along the back roads made of dirt, have my fingertips run through the green sticks of grass, breathe in fresh air and just - let go.

We as humans are modified. We have a job: be nice, don’t steal, never cut a person down.

So may I ask you this? What makes you better than the people who have nothing? For the boy on the street, he has no home. He picks trash from the dumpster as if it was treasure. For the alcoholic woman cries at night - she cannot provide a home for her children as her mind forsakes her. Betrays her. Cuts her down like a river smashing against the edgy rocks.
$169.95
Her home is not her house. It is not her workplace, nor her feeling; but her home is her heart. You are no more worthy than that woman with a heart. Your home is placed in money. Placed in riches. and that feeling - it beats you. Takes you over. It wins. For poison stings like a bee. The neurotic thoughts exploding in my mind. The monsters clawing at me, from under my bed: It’s uncontrollable. It’s taking over. It’s more powerful than the greed that lies in my head; louder than the lions that live in thy heart; bigger than the expansion that I feel I need. “Home” to me is not dependent on other people. It is not given as a gift, nor bought with money. Home is a place we find within ourselves, within our head, within our hearts. That woman with liquor upon her lips - she is loved. That poor boy on the streets - he is loved. Me, I am loved. And I - I have found my home.

Bagpipes I love this story. Lay down what's bothering you, breathe in the fresh air and LISTEN to this story. Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life. As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless

man. And as I played "Amazing Grace", the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept; we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head was hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Ramblings Of A Retired Mind
LEASING 403-263-4449
I found this timely, because today I was in a store that sells sunglasses, and only sunglasses. A young sales lady walks over and asks, "What brings you in today?" I looked at her, and said, "I'm interested in buying a refrigerator.” She didn't quite know how to respond. Am I getting to be that age? I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can't afford one. So I'm wearing my garage door opener instead. I was thinking about old age and decided old age is when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too damn tired to bounce it. I thought about making a fitness movie for folks my age and calling it "Pumping Rust." When people see a cat's litter box they always say, “Oh, have you got a cat?” Just once I want to reply, “No, it's just for company!” Employment application blanks always ask who is to be called in case of an emergency. I think you should write, "An ambulance."
OPENING FALL 2016
Birds of a feather flock together and then potty on your car. The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really close friends. The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy its replacement. Did you ever notice: The Roman Numerals for forty (40) are XL? Did you ever notice: When you put the 2 words 'The' and 'IRS' together, it spells 'Theirs…’? Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.

Wheatland District Rural Crime Watch Association By Nicole MH
Nicole is an avid writer with a background in marketing and communications. She has a passion for humanitarianism, sports, local consignment boutiques, home decor shops, coffee houses and lemons - oh, does she love lemons. Nicole is a proud mother of one and a true believer in karma, fate and purpose. She is fascinated by human behavior and eastern religions and if you were to ask her what she wants to be when she grows up all she would say is, happy.
We are all familiar with the old adage, “it takes a village to raise a child,” right? Well that wise old precept can also be applied to keeping our families safe within said village. Hence the reason we are pleased to introduce to you, the Wheatland District Rural Crime Watch Association (WDRCWA). The Wheatland District Rural Crime Watch Association is a volunteer driven organization consisting of community-minded individuals working together to ensure that our friends and neighbours remain safe. By working directly with local RCMP, these wonderful volunteers help to safeguard our communities from violation and misconduct. “We are the eyes and ears for local law enforcement,” says Dorothy Bodeux, a WDRCWA veteran of over 20 years. “We’re always out there looking for anything unusual or suspicious, doing what we can to help keep our communities safe.” There are approximately 60 families within the committee; many of which attend the monthly meetings where local law enforcement delivers community updates and concerns. In past, these meetings have also consisted of guest speakers such as local farming advocates, GHOST team members, narcotics specialists, dog handlers and home security proponents. “It’s very fun and informative to be a part of the Wheatland Rural Crime Watch team,” asserts Dorothy. “We get to learn a lot about our communities, meet some wonderful people and enjoy some special events [such as summer barbeques and Christmas dinners] - all while helping keep our areas safe.” Wheatland County Crime Watch expands from as far north as Nightingale to Chestermere and surrounding areas. Although full members pay $10 per family to partake on the committee, it doesn’t cost anything to attend the team’s monthly meetings. “We encourage anyone and everyone to come out and be a part of WDRCWA community. Just sit in on some meetings, be informed and meet some new friends,” Dorothy adds. To learn more visit www.ruralcrimewatch.ab.ca
