The Old Man
Two medical students were walking along the street when they saw an old man walking with his legs spread apart. He was stiff legged and walking slowly. One student said to his friend: “I’m sure that poor old man has Peltry Syndrome. Those people walk just like that.” The other student says: “No, I don’t think so. The old man surely has Zovitzki Syndrome. He walks slowly and his legs are apart, just as we learned in class.” Since they couldn’t agree they decided to ask the old man. They approached him and one of the students said to him, “We’re medical students and couldn’t help but notice the way you walk, but we couldn’t agree on the syndrome you might have. Could you tell us what it is?” The old man said, “I’ll tell you, but first you tell me what you two fine medical students think.” The first student said, “I think it’s Peltry Syndrome.” The old man said, “You thought - but you are wrong.” The other student said, “I think you have Zovitzki Syndrome.” The old man said, “You thought - but you are wrong.” So they asked him, “Well, old timer, what do you have?” The old man said, “I thought it was GAS - but I was wrong, too!”

Aquarius. Jan 20 - Feb 18 Aquarius - The Water Bearer. Often simple and unassuming, the Aquarian goes about accomplishing goals in a quiet, often unorthodox ways. Although their methods may be unorthodox, the results for achievement are surprisingly effective. Aquarian’s will take up any cause. They are honest, loyal and highly intelligent. They are also easy going and make natural friendships. If not kept in check, the Aquarian can be prone to sloth and laziness. However, they know this about themselves. They are often quite artistic and poetic.
Pisces. Feb 19 - March 20
www.thenewsyneighbour.com
Pisces - The Fish They are honest, unselfish, trustworthy and often have quiet dispositions. They can be overcautious and sometimes gullible. These qualities can cause the Pisces to be taken advantage of, which is unfortunate as this sign is beautifully gentle, and generous. In the end, however, the Pisces is often the victor of ill circumstance because of his/her intense determination. They become passionately devoted to a cause – particularly if they are championing for friends or family.

Must-See Sporting Events for 2012!
So the Calgary Flames plan is now clear. Clear as mud in my opinion. With the addition of Michael Cammalleri last month, the Flames ownership and management team sent a strong message to their fans. The business plan is more important than the long term hockey plan. How many times have we heard Flames president Ken King or someone in the organization spew the words “once you make the playoffs, anything can happen.” Funny how these intelligent hockey minds don’t realize (or admit) that no number eight seed has ever won the Stanley Cup. Isn’t winning the Holy Grail the ultimate goal? Since when do organizations aspire to “sneak” into the playoffs? Sure getting into the playoffs does help the bottom line and the so called business plan. However, I do have to ask the question? Why does this Flames ownership group (who are some of the wealthiest men in the city) care about making a few dollars instead of winning a Stanley Cup? For the real stakeholders in the team (the fans), this really is a sad mystery! Flames general manager Jay Feaster made four very strong and passionate points last summer when the interim tag was removed from his title. His plan and his vision were to create “Meritocracy” within the organization. The team had to get out of “cap jail.” It was time to eliminate the trend of no trade or no movement contracts. Last but not least, the Flames had to stop trading away assets. In my books, that is a pretty solid plan! So let’s recap what Feaster done in his first year as Flames general manager. Has he created Meritocracy? Yes. For the first time in a long time young players like TJ Brodie, Lance Bouma, Roman Horak and Leland Irving have been given a chance to play. Granted, some of these promotions were based on injury while some based on Merit. Are the Calgary Flames in cap jail? In the early going, Feaster did a nice job creating some salary cap flexibility for the team. Robin Regher, Ales Kotalik, Damon Langkow, and Nik Hagman were all moved. The Flames got cheaper and younger, but they were not better. So throw that plan out the window. The Flames went on a shopping spree picking up Blake Comeau on Page 14
The Newsy Neighbour
waivers and trading for Blair Jones and Cammalleri. A quick ten million was added to the Flames cap hit and all of sudden the organization is back in cap jail. The Flames still boast one of the oldest rosters in the NHL with a salary cap hit of over 64 million dollars. Feaster wanted to eliminate the trend of bad contracts with no move or no trade clauses. The big three signings in the off season were to Curtis Glencross, Alex Tanguay and Anton Babchuk. Two of these contracts included limited no move clauses and the deal with Babchuk was just a bad contract. Lastly, the Flames had to stop moving assets. Last year at the trade deadline Feaster acquired a “broken down” Freddy Modin for a 7th round pick. Feaster admitted at the time it was a bad trade. To dump Kotalik from the books he had to sacrifice a 2nd round pick to the Buffalo Sabres. While many feel the Cammalleri trade was a good hockey trade, did Feaster really have to throw in a 2nd round pick to the Montreal Canadians? The Habs were desperate to get Cammy out of their dressing room. A couple of GM’s I talked too were stunned the Flames gave up a 2nd round pick and took on the additional salary. Some in the media will say “what’s the big deal”, it’s only a 2nd round pick? Considering half of the players in the NHL are first and second round picks, I would suggest it’s a very big deal! 14 players on the Flames current roster fall in this category. 6 of them are 2nd round picks, including Cammalleri. Trading these assets away was a dangerous trend started by Daryl Sutter and now continued by Jay Feaster. This is no way to build for the future! So as the NHL trade deadline approaches on February 27th, it’s very clear the Flames have become a buyer instead of a seller. This is a now team that only has one goal in mind. Squeak into the playoffs because if you can do that…… “Anything can happen!” For Feaster’s sake and the Flames, I hope they do make the playoffs. If they don’t, then this season will become an epic fail! About Jock Wilson:

Mad Lib Love Letter Dear ________________ (Name of person filling in the blanks) I know it has been a while since I have picked up a pen and expressed myself in a letter to you. Believe me, my pen’s silence has nothing to do with the argument we had over _________________ (petty household chore) or my all consuming obsession with __________________ (Bizarre hobby). It’s just that in this manic world, time is slipperier than a tube of K-Y Jelly turned inside out. One rarely finds a moment to sit back and praise their partner’s ________________ (intellectual forte) or their drop-dead-gorgeous ________________ (Body Part). But today is your day, my fuzzy-wuzzy ________________ (cute animal). I shall lavish all my attention upon you. I will abstain from _________________ (Favourite TV show). The Art of Kissing
Every now and then a quarrel breaks out down at the barber shop. Lines are drawn, challenges leveled and, with any luck, somebody walks out with very few blood stains. All over a seemingly innocent discussion: What is the greatest sport on earth? Some say “football”. Some say “baseball”. Canadians say “hockey”. The rest of the world says “soccer”. (Actually, they say “football”, too... but they mean “soccer”.) I say: “kissing”. Yes, kissing is the greatest sport on earth. Allow me to explain just a few of the reasons. Kissing is the most versatile sport around. There are so many types of kisses to choose from – at least one for just about any occasion. There is the quick peck on the cheek kiss, the peck on each cheek kiss, the peck on your nephew’s cheek kiss while grabbing the other cheek flab with your hand, the wildly passionate kiss, the elegant kiss on the hand, the dreaded kiss of death, the “Hey you! Kiss this!” and even the Florida town of Kissimmee (founded, no doubt, by early Italian pioneer kissers). The Art of Kissing Is Easy ~ Kissing is easy to transport. It really doesn’t matter where you are. You can kiss: at the gym, in the boardroom, in the space shuttle, even in Alaska from June through September. Kissing requires so little equipment, which means you can do it even when not prepared for the occasion, and even when you have to travel light. This makes it the ideal participation sport for businessmen, world travelers and marsupial groupies. Kissing always livens things up. Try this: the next time you are in an oh-so-booooring meeting that seems to last oh-so-foreeeeever, why not just kiss somebody? Go ahead; try it. See how it livens things up? Kissing is 100% biodegradable, so when you kiss somebody, you help the environment. Kissing is safe to do in a moving vehicle, as long as you are not driving. Kissing is non-fattening. This is perhaps the best news of all, because dieters now have something to keep their mouths busy while not eating, and smokers can quit smoking without having to chew candies until they a) need to diet, or b) induce diabetes. Kissing is organic, low in sodium, preservative-free, low in saturated fats and does not contain dozens of delicious ingredients that cannot be pronounced, like javelchromopntheoremicherbicidic acid. Most kisses are not tested on animals, but who am I to stifle your sense of adventure? You can kiss just about everyone: your boyfriend, your aunt, your wife, your veterinarian, the Prime Minister of the Duchy of Grand Fenwick and your pet. Don’t try kissing them all at the same time, though... especially not your girlfriend and your wife. Kissing meets the toughest safety regulations of any national or international sporting organization. Kissing has a tremendous safety record, except for the occasional locked braces Extreme Kissing NOT Recommended ~ The only recorded deaths involving kissing are by third parties, usually wives, husbands, spurned lovers and other spectators who somehow get past security and storm onto the playing field like that well-dressed gentleman at the Superbowl. We do NOT recommend “extreme kissing”. For instance, don’t kiss an on-duty garbage truck; it is considered dangerous. Don’t kiss a metal fence-post in sub-zero weather. Don’t kiss any electrical outlets!!!! Are you paying attention? This one is important. Don’t kiss the vacuum cleaner if you want to retain all your vital organs. It’s OK to kiss sandpaper, just don’t use your tongue and don’t kiss a chainsaw; we feel this one is self-explanatory. But overall, kissing is so great that it makes baseball, hockey, football and soccer seem like bush league sports. Next time you hear a brawl at your local barbershop, just go in and give everyone a kiss. I guarantee that you will win the argument hands down. Local Online Classifieds & Awesome Weekly Deals! And if not, at least you will make some new friends to argue with. Page 16

Loving you is looking after you, Whether you’re sick or well. Loving you is watching you sleep, Warm and cozy by my side. Loving you is knowing you’re there, And in you I can confide. Loving you is sharing a life, Where every day is new. Loving you is trusting, That you really love me too. Loving you is family, On those special days of the year. Loving you is our similar dreams, That we hold dear. Loving you is happiness, That we share this life together. Loving you is the magic in knowing, That WE are forever and ever! BY PATRICIA MULLIN
Valentine’s Day Card Messages:
Examples of What to Write in a Card “As busy as we get, we need to be reminded that we are still sweethearts. Valentine’s Day is a good day for me to stop and realize how wonderful you make me feel. Happy Valentine’s Day.” “I like all the ways that we hang out together, even when we’re mad. And I like the things that are not appropriate for a greeting card.” “Whether Valentines Day or not, I can’t think of anyone I would rather spend a day with. Happy Valentine’s Day.” “I worked hard trying to think of what to write in your card. Then I just copied it from The Newsy Neighbour. Happy Valentine’s Day!” “I couldn’t think of anything better to write in your card than the truth. I love you!”

Family Page ~ Single Parents It is not easy being a single parent; sometimes you wonder how you can cope with it all but you are not alone. One of the most striking changes in family structure over the last twenty years has been the increase of single parent families. Due to high divorce rates and adults choosing not to marry, this is currently the fastest growing family form in North America. More than half of all children will spend some of their lives in a single-parent family. For the first time in history, children are most likely to live in a single parent family for reasons other than the death of a parent. Incredibly one in four children are born with their mother’s not married; usually teenage mothers and being a single parent can be hard and lonely. There is often no other adult with whom to share decision-making, discipline, and financial responsibilities. The full burden of finding responsible childcare, earning a living, and parenting falls on one individual. Here are a few simple tips you help you and your children survive and create positive experiences for all of you: Find stable, safe childcare. Establish a home routine and stick to it. Apply rules and discipline clearly and consistently. Allow the child to be a child and not ask him or her to solve adult problems. Get to know the important people (teachers, coaches, friends) in the child's life. Answer questions about the other parent calmly and honestly. Avoid behaviour that causes the child to feel pressed to choose between divorced parents. Explain financial limitations honestly. Most importantly you must learn to be happy with yourself. Thinking of yourself as a successful single. Have a positive state of mind. You will grow in self-confidence as you see success each new day.
Find time to spend with your children each day. • Read together • Prepare meals together • Ride a bike or walk the dog together • Build in family fun weekends or trips • Go camping, fishing, or hiking • Attend a sporting event • Go to a museum • Visit friends or relatives • Strong families are committed to one another. • Discover and encourage your children’s activities and interests.
Family members value spirituality.
Remind children that you are there for them.
• Work together to solve problems • Show each other appreciation • Tell your children that you love them • Say thank you when they complete family chores • Leave notes of appreciation for your family
• Discuss your family views on spirituality. • Practice your family’s view on spirituality whether it is appreciating • nature by hiking or camping or attending organized religious activities.
Communication skills are good in strong families.
• Use “I” statements when working through problems. For example, “I get worried when you don’t come home on time. I need you to call if you won’t make your curfew.” • Ask your children about their day using questions that require more than a oneword response. For example “What was the best part of your day today?” • Avoid interrupting one another and really listen when others are talking. • Turn off the television and eat dinner together. • Use crises and stress as opportunities for growth. • Work on handling your own stress in a positive manner to provide a model for your children. • Use community resources to get help. • Encourage one another throughout a crisis. • Talk about what will be learned from the experience and how that can strengthen the family.
Most importantly stay strong and always remember tomorrow is another day full of promise and all the best the world has to offer. “Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.” Arnold Schwarzenegger Take care of yourself and your family. The love of a family is life's greatest blessing.

Male Friend Seeking Technical Support Can you please advise me? I’m having some problems. I’m currently running the latest version of GirlFriend and I’ve been having some problems. I’ve been running the same version of DrinkingBuddies1.0 as my primary application, and all the GirlFriend releases have always conflicted with it. I hear that DrinkingBuddies won’t crash if you run GirlFriend in background mode with the sound turned off. But I’m embarrassed to say, I can’t find the switch to turn the sound off. I just run them separately, and it works okay. GirlFriend also seems to have a problem coexisting with my Golf program, often trying to abort Golf with some sort of timing incompatibility. I probably should have stayed with GirlFriend1.0, but I thought I might see better performance with GirlFriend2.0. After months of conflicts and other problems, I consulted a friend who has had experience with GirlFriend2.0. He said that I probably didn’t have enough cache to run GirlFriend2.0, and that eventually it would require a Token ring to run properly. He was right - as soon as I purged my cache, it uninstalled itself. Shortly after that, I installed GirlFriend3.0 beta. All the bugs were supposed to be gone, but the first time I used it, it gave me a virus. I had to clean out my whole system and shut down for a while. I very cautiously upgraded to GirlFriend4.0. This time I used a SCSI probe first and also installed a virus protection program. It worked okay for a while until I discovered that GirlFriend1.0 was still in my system. Then I tried to run GirlFriend1.0 again with GirlFriend4.0 still installed, but GirlFriend4.0 has a feature that I didn’t know about that automatically senses the presence of any other version of GirlFriend and communicates with it in some way, which results in the immediate removal of both versions. The version I have right now works pretty well, but there are still some problems. Like all versions of GirlFriend, it is written in some obscure language that I can’t understand, much less reprogram. Frankly, I think there is too much attention paid to the look and feel rather than the desired functionality. Also, to get the best connections with your hardware, you usually have to use gold-plated contacts. And I’ve never liked how GirlFriend is totally “objectoriented”. A year ago, a friend of mine upgraded his version of GirlFriend to GirlFriendPlus1.0, which is a Terminate and Stay Resident version of GirlFriend. He discovered that GirlFriendPlus1.0 expires within a year if you don’t upgrade to Fiancee1.0. So he did. But soon after that, he had to upgrade to Wife1.0, which he describes as a “huge resource hog”. It has taken up all of his space, so he can’t load anything else. One of the primary reasons that he upgraded to Wife1.0 is that it came bundled with FreeSexPlus1.0. Well, it turns out that the resource allocation module of Wife1.0 sometimes prohibits access to FreeSexPlus, particularly the new Plug-Ins he wanted to try. On top of that, Wife1.0 must be running on a well warmed-up system before he can do anything. Although he did not ask for it, Wife1.0 came with MotherInLaw1.0 which has an automatic pop-up feature that he can’t turn off. I told him to try installing Mistress1.0, but he said that he heard if you try to run it without first uninstalling Wife1.0, Wife1.0 will delete MSMoney files before doing the uninstall itself. Then Mistress1.0 won’t install anyway due to insufficient resources. Can you help?? www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Five ways (count them) to get your children excited about math
If your middle school student is excited about his or her math homework today, be very thankful: By the time they’re in high school, the numbers show they could be far less interested. According to data from the Business-Higher Education Forum, less than 20 percent of America’s high school students are math proficient and interested in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Yet the demand for engineers and advanced technology professionals in some key fields is expected to grow in the coming years. What can parents do to keep students enthused about math? Start by thinking about ways that play time can also be learning time - without your child necessarily knowing it. Slipping math into family activities or favourite hobbies your child already enjoys, along with a little gaming flair, can make a positive difference in how he or she views and uses math for years to come. Here are some fun and easy ways to incorporate math into your child’s day: 1) Food for thought. If your child likes helping in the kitchen, get cooking with math. Measuring ingredients is great practice with fractions and an easy way to show your child how important math is in everyday life. If a recipe calls for 1/2 cup of flour, use a 1/4 or 1/8 measuring cup for the ingredients; or try doubling the recipe when baking a batch of cookies for a delicious and rewarding experience. 2) Gaming + math = learning. Web-based experiences that fuse online games with learning expose children to math during screen time. 3) At http://www.mathmovesu.com, students can build loops, turns and barrel rolls, and see many math and science principles come into play. The tangible reward is designing one’s personal “virtual ride,” which can then be shared with family and friends through Facebook. 4) Batter up. Have your little leaguer track stats of their favourite baseball team and compare them to their biggest rivals. Pose small challenges such as how many more hits their favourite players need to raise their respective averages to .500. 5) Sale away. Money talks, and it also makes for great math practice for children. Consider holding a yard sale, which is not only a good way to clean out the garage, but also an opportunity to price objects, keep track of how many items are sold and make change. When out shopping, have your children calculate the FRIENDLY, RELIABLE CURB SIDE PICK UP final price once a discount, coupon and/or tax is factored. Service available in Strathmore, Standard, Think outside the house. Get fresh air while Rockyford and Namaka brushing up on lessons. Basic toys such as kites, paper airplanes and pinewood derby cars are fun and active ways to learn not-so-basic math and science rules. It might even help your child earn a badge in his or her favourite scouting program. Incorporating these types of activities into leisure time can make math a part of their everyday lives and, ideally, a more enjoyable subject at school. Once children connect math with something that excites them, they may just get hooked on it for a lifetime.

Safe Snow Shovelling Winter has begun after a slow start here in Southern Alberta. For some, this means hitting the slopes or venturing out to the closest hill to toboggan with family and friends, but it also means slippery walkways, icy stairs, and snow to shovel. In this article, I will discuss tips to prevent injury while clearing snow this winter so you can continue to enjoy all the other winter activities you may have planned. The average snow shovel can weigh 5-7 lbs, so over the course of shovelling and entire driveway and sidewalk, you could be lifting hundreds of pounds. The following tips can help keep your back healthy this winter when shovelling these hundreds of pounds of snow. Tip #1 - Pay Attention to the Weather Forecast: If the weather report calls for several days of snow, consider shovelling more frequently so that the snow doesn’t pile up. Snow is easier to shovel when it has first fallen and hasn’t been trampled on or driven over. Packed snow and ice may require hard shoves and sudden jerky movements to break apart, which could cause injury to your low back, mid back, shoulders, or arms. Also, if you know the weather report is calling for snow overnight, set your alarm 20-30 minutes earlier to give yourself enough time to clear the snow before going to work. If you feel rushed to clear the snow because you didn’t give yourself enough time, you may lift more than you should or use improper techniques to get the job done quickly, predisposing yourself to injury. Tip #2 - Pick the Right Shovel: I always tell patients to invest in a good shovel - it’s worth it! You will be using your shovel several times a week for at least 4 months each year and shovels generally last several years before needed to be replaced. A shovel that is right for you should be considered a worthwhile investment. I recommend considering the length of the shaft, the shape of the handle, the volume of the scoop, and the weight of the shovel before buying. For most tasks, your best bet would be a light weight plastic pusher shovel with a curved ergonomic shaft, and a thick-grip handle. However, if you are using a metal shovel, be sure to spray it with Teflon first so the snow doesn’t stick to it, making it heavier than it needs to be. Tip #3 - Push the Snow, Don’t Throw: Always push the snow to the edge of your driveway or towards the grassy side of the sidewalk instead of throwing it. This allows you to avoid lifting heavy shovel full’s and twisting rapidly to throw the snow, which can injure your lower back. This may not always be possible, especially if the snow has piled up or is too heavy to push all the way to the edge - in this case, follow the directions below to avoid twisting and injury to the spine. Tip #4 - Bend the Knees, not the Back: If you have to lift snow, bend the knees and hips instead of the back and lift with your leg and arm muscles while keeping your back in “neutral spine.” Keep the shovel close to your body so that your back isn’t strained and walk to the spot you are dumping the snow. Instead of throwing the snow, just simply turn the handle to dump the snow. Tip #5 - Warm Up. Shovelling is a workout, and like any workout, a proper warm-up is necessary to avoid injuring joints and soft tissues. A warm-up is especially important if you are shovelling in the morning as your joints and muscles may be stiff from sleep. A 10-15 minute walk and some light stretches should do the trick. Tip #6 - Take Frequent Breaks. If you feel tired or short of breath, stop and take a rest. Stand up straight, walk around, and do some light stretches on your break to work out the kinks. If you experience chest or back pain, stop 4321 84th St NE shovelling immediately. If you have back pain that is severe or persists more than a day after shovelling, see your chiropractor. If you have chest pain that is severe, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Tip #7 - Stay Positive. Snow shovelling can be an excellent workout if performed properly and a great way to stay in shape over the winter. I recHeavy Equipment Sale every 6 weeks. ommend reminding yourself of this when shovelling, as it helps you stay www.grahamauctions.com On line bidding available. positive while performing this particular task. Washing Machines – Top Load vs Front Load The debate goes on – which is better? A traditional top loading washer? A high efficiency top loader ? A high efficiency front loader? Looking for the winner? Most of us use our washing machines on a pretty regular basis. More and more often, we have varying types of fabrics and blends in our clothes and clothing is not cheap. Blended fabric types, stain removal, the removal of phosphates from detergents, water & energy use, are all being intensely studied by manufacturers. Traditional top load washer - Uses regular detergent and has faster wash times. They use larger amounts of water and energy and the agitator can cause wear on clothes. Generally they clean well on common fabrics but usually have less capacity and lower spin speeds resulting in clothes not being as well rinsed or dry at the end of the cycle. Usually a lower cost unit. High efficiency top load washer. - Uses high efficiency detergent and much less water and energy, (Energy Star rated) although have longer wash times. Generally very accommodating to cleaning various fabric types and with no traditional agitator, cause less wear on clothes. They have larger capacity and higher spin speeds resulting in good rinsing and dryer clothes at the end of a cycle. They cannot be ‘stacked’ but may have less vibration and ‘odour’ issues than a front load. Interestingly, the front load washer first appeared to be taking over the market but now the HE top load washer is becoming very popular. High efficiency front load washer - Uses high efficiency detergent and has the most efficient water and energy use ratings, (Energy Star rated), of the domestic washer products. Although they also have longer wash times, most have an excellent cycle selection that can accommodate any laundry requirement. They have large capacity and high spin speeds resulting in good rinsing and dryer clothes at the end of a cycle. Generally they can be ‘stacked’ but are more sensitive to floor/vibration issues. They do require some simple periodic maintenance, (cleaning), by the consumer. The majority of all types of washers are much more water and energy efficient than they once were. The most important single issue is what you – the consumer – actually need in a washing machine. Quite honestly, there is little point in buying a huge capacity, all the features, high efficiency washing machine if you only do one load of basic laundry a week. At the same time, an active family will tremendously benefit from the time and cost savings with the large capacity, cycle (fabric) selection and water/energy efficiencies of a high efficiency washer. Don’t rely on advertising or ‘numbers game’ claims; a smart, savvy and informed consumer is the only way to be. Remember – there are 4 sides to every story; one side, the other side, the political/media side and the truth. Boost your ‘smart’ quotient by reading: Is That a Fact? BODY PARTS & DISEASE - STOMACH CANCER
Over the past few months we have been sharing information about different types of cancers, as they seem to be a part of our lives; we all know someone affected. Our lifestyles seem to be attributing to this alarming growth of people having cancer. Remember, eat fresh fruits and vegetables and stop eating all the boxed stuff! This month, the column is about stomach cancer. Also known as gastric cancer, it affects the stomach, which is found in the upper part of the abdomen and just below the ribs. The stomach is part of the body’s digestive system; it produces acids and enzymes that break down food before passing it to the small intestine. The cancer can develop in any part of the stomach and spread up towards the esophagus (the tube that connects mouth to the stomach) or down into the small intestine. Rates of stomach cancer vary widely throughout the world. In Japan, it’s the most common cancer, where it affects 1 in every 1,000 people. The incidence is also very high in Chile and Iceland. In Canada, while the rates of stomach cancer aren’t as high, it is still one of the top 20 most common cancers. This type of cancer more often strikes older people, men more often than women, and people of African descent more often than Caucasians. Causes of Stomach Cancer As with most cancers, researchers don’t know yet what causes stomach cancer. Several risk factors have been identified, however. These include: Alcohol use, cigarette smoking, diets high in foods that are preserved by drying, smoking, salting, or pickling, diet low in vegetables and fruits, exposure to chemicals used in rubber and lead manufacturing, family history of stomach cancer, being older than 50 years of age, previous stomach surgery, people of African descent. Symptoms and Complications of Stomach Cancer Many symptoms of stomach cancer are easily ignored as simple discomfort, which is why stomach cancer often progresses quite far before being detected. Some of these symptoms include: Abdominal pain, bloating after meals, diarrhea or constipation, heartburn or indigestion, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, weakness or fatigue, weight loss, vomiting blood or passing blood through stool. Advanced stomach cancer will severely affect digestion and nutrition and may spread throughout the body, eventually causing death. The main complication arising from treated stomach cancer is related to the surgery, where the removal of the stomach results in nutritional problems. If a doctor suspects stomach cancer, a thorough patient history will first be done. This includes asking about your lifestyle, such as tobacco or alcohol use and whether you have a family history of stomach cancer. In its early stages, stomach cancer is very treatable. Unfortunately, early stomach cancer causes few symptoms. Usually, a diagnosis is made when the cancer is more advanced. Because it can take some time to identify stomach cancer, only about 10% of people are diagnosed while it’s still in the early stages. It seems that some cases of stomach cancer might be prevented. The risk factors listed above, including diet, can provide a clue to how we might reduce our chances of developing cancer: stop smoking, eat a healthy, balanced diet including regular servings of fresh fruit and vegetables and don’t abuse alcohol. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

For the second time since 1982, this musical family will once again perform on the stage in the Chestermere hall. Lloyd Kunkel and his family were well known to the Chestermere cabin owners and the surrounding rural population in the sixties and seventies. His Drylanders band which included two of his brothers, played for dances in the old Chestermere hall and they headlined the first big night to celebrate the opening of the “new” complex in the early 80’s. This was no local boys-with-guitars entertainment – he and his band played regularly at the Palliser Hotel and were featured entertainment for the ’88 Olympics in downtown Calgary. They also played occasional back up for Tommy Hunter, and for a time had Ron Barge (better known as Buckshot –you big kids remember him!) playing keyboard as part of the band. They played all the local venues including Carseland, Strathmore, Indus and Irricana as well. Following a dream twenty five years ago, the Kunkels have created a family entertainment centre in southern Alberta, in a restored old barn, now complimented by a small lake, a large fully serviced RV park, and summer cottages. About ten years ago, son Trevor, his wife and two sons joined the operation. Known as The Great Canadian Barn Dance, they serve a “great Canadian roast beef dinner” (the Kunkel men cook, carve and serve the beef) to over 10,000 people each year and entertain 20,000 or more with their barn dances and musical programs. The entertainment is comfort music for the soul – old time western. Think “Sons of the Pioneers” with the lively addition of Lloyd’s talented grandsons and a generous dose of the old Kunkel humour. Son Trevor, who as a teenager in Chestermere was a national championship water skier, is now a versatile singer and entertainer. Lloyd is now the proud patriarch of three generations of Canadian talent. He is also an ambassador for Alberta tourism and has traveled frequently to the US on behalf of Travel Alberta and other groups. Now they are coming home to Chestermere, three generations of the Kunkel family, for one performance only on Saturday, April 21st in the Chestermere Recreation Complex. Tickets for the dinner, show and dance are available from; Audrey: 403 272 9280 audrey8@telus.net Jen:403-272-3764 jpeddles@telus.net

I am a Grapefruit How do you do? My name is Gracie Grapefruit, and I am one of the “Seven Wonders of Barbados” (you know, along with the magnificent Harrison’s Cave and the Morgan Lewis Mill, just to name a few!). When Europeans first discovered us, they called us the “forbidden fruit,” likely because they simply didn’t know what we were! As far as I know we weren’t around when Adam first took his big bite back in Eden. Actually we’re a naturally occurring hybrid subtropical citrus, a cross between the Jamaican sweet orange and the Indonesian pomelo. We cluster like grapes do, thus our modern name, grapefruit. Earlier, we were known as the shaddock or shattuck, based on the legend of one Captain Shaddock, who supposedly brought pomelo seeds to Jamaica and bred the first fruit. Our fancy botanical name (which I quite like, by the way) is Citrus x paradisi. We grow on evergreen trees that can grow almost 50 feet in height. Grapefruit tree leaves are dark green, thin, and reach about six inches in length. We were brought to Florida in 1823 by Count Odette Philippe, where we gradually became an important crop. An early pioneer in the American citrus industry, wealthy entrepreneur Kimball Chase Atwood, founded the Atwood Grapefruit Co. in the late 19th century. Florida’s Atwood Grove became the largest grapefruit grove in the world, and is the site where the world’s first pink grapefruit was discovered, in 1906. We didn’t become the citrus superstars we are today until 1929, with the advent of Ruby Red. Today, red grapefruits have become the symbolic fruit of Texas, where for decades “inferior” white grapefruit were ruthlessly eliminated. With usual Texan bravado, some of my bright Lone Star cousins today sport names like Ruby Sweet, Texas Choice, and my favourite, Reddest. We are an excellent source of lots of nutrients and phytochemicals that help make up a healthy diet. We’re a good source of vitamin C, a vitamin that helps support the immune system. Vitamin C-rich foods like grapefruit help reduce cold symptoms or severity of cold symptoms. Our pink and red variants boast those lovely colours, thanks to something called lycopene, a very beneficial antioxidant that may be helpful against various forms of tumours. Eating grapefruit can also help reduce free radical damage associated with inflammatory conditions such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have also shown grapefruit helps lower bad cholesterol levels. Research presented at the 228th national meeting of the American Chemical Society suggests that drinking just three 6-ounce glasses of grapefruit juice a day reduces the activity of an enzyme that activates cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. And if this wasn’t enough, we contain large quantities of something called spermidine, which may be related to aging. It’s known to be needed for cell growth and maturation – as cells age, their spermidine levels fall. Scientists have shown that by feeding spermidine to worms, fruit flies, and yeast, their life spans are significantly prolonged. And when human immune cells were cultured in a medium containing spermidine, they also lived longer. Maybe Ponce de Leon should have been looking for a grapefruit tree when he stumbled all over the Caribbean and Florida looking for the Fountain of Youth! And for those of you concerned about your weight, we form the core of something called the Grapefruit Diet, based on the assumption our low glycemic index helps the body’s metabolism burn fat. Bend and stretch! I’m sure you already know we can be tart or sweet (like a lot of people you know, right?!). Regardless of how you like us, there are lots of ways to enjoy our healthy taste – try some of the recipes I’ve included here, you’ll see what I mean. Be well, my friends, Gracie Grapefruit
Now, make sure you rinse me under cool water before eating me, even though you will probably not be eating my peel, since cutting into an unwashed fruit may transfer dirt or bacteria that may reside on my surface to the edible flesh. I’m usually eaten fresh – you can slice me horizontally and scooping out sections of the halves with a spoon. To separate my flesh from the membrane you can either cut it with a sharp knife, a special curved-blade grapefruit knife, or a separate with a grapefruit spoon. If I have seeds, you can remove them with your spoon before you eat me. . You can eat me like an orange or add a little tangy spark to your green salads. Instead of your morning glass of OJ, have me instead. You’ll love me with cilantro and chili peppers to make a unique salsa or how about a salad with a tropical flair, combine my chopped pieces, cooked shrimp and avocadoes and serve on a bed of romaine lettuce. Nothing could be easier or more welcoming on a fall morning than a simple broiled grapefruit with brown sugar."
Broiled Grapefruit 2 grapefruit, cut in half 6 Tbsp. brown sugar
Preheat the oven’s broiler and set the rack about 6 inches from the element. Place the grapefruit halves, cut side up onto a baking sheet and sprinkle with about 1-½ tablespoons of brown sugar each. Broil until the brown sugar has melted and began to bubble, 3 to 8 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes before eating – you don’t want to burn your mouth.
Pink Grapefruit Sorbet 6 Florida grapefruit 1 Cup sugar 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
Using a vegetable peeler, remove the zest from the peel of one grapefruit. Coarsely chop the zest. In a food processor bowl or blender container, combine chopped zest and sugar. Cover and process or blend until zest is very finely chopped. Squeeze enough juice from the grapefruit to make four cups juice; pour into a mixing bowl. Add zest mixture and lemon juice. Mix well. Freeze the grapefruit mixture in a 2- or 4-quart ice cream freezer according to manufacturer's directions. Makes one quart or eight (half-cup) servings.
Orange And Grapefruit Salad 8 large oranges, cut 8 pink grapefruit, cut 8 large basil leaves, chopped ( For a dessert, substitute mint for basil) Simple Syrup: 1 cup sugar 4 cups water In a saucepan, bring to boil sugar and water, then stirring until sugar is dissolved. Simmer for 10 minutes, remove from heat and let cool. To remove grapefruit an orange segments from the fruit, cut away all the peel and white pith with a small sharp knife. Hold the fruit over a bowl and, with the knife, cut along each membrane to free the citrus segments, allowing the juice to drip into the bowl. Pour cold syrup over fruit segments, add basil Chiffonade and refrigerate for 1 hour. Serve in martini glasses with raspberry syrup and sugar on the rim of the glass.
Fresh Grapefruit Salad 4 grapefruits, peeled and white pith removed 1/4 Cup fresh lemon juice 3 (1/4 ounce) envelopes Knox unflavoured gelatine 1/4 Cup cold water 1/2 Cup boiling water 1/4-1 Cup sugar, to taste
Peel the grapefruit over a large bowl to catch juices, removing all white pith. Cut along both sides of the membranes dividing grapefruit sections, letting segments fall into the bowl. Squeeze the membranes with your hands to extract all possible juice. Remove any seeds that fall into the bowl. Juice one lemon to yield 1/4 cup juice; add to grapefruit segments. Set aside. Measure 1/4-cup cold water into a 2 cup measuring cup or small bowl. Add gelatin and stir to soften. Add boiling water and stir to dissolve. Add sugar to taste to gelatin mixture, stirring until dissolved. The amount of sugar you add will depend upon the tartness of the grapefruit. With the tart yellow grapefruit, I add about 1 cup of sugar, but with the sweeter red grapefruit, I may add as little as 1/4 cup. Add the gelatin mixture to the grapefruit segments and juices, tossing gently to combine well. Pour into a 9-inch square Pyrex dish and refrigerate 4 hours overnight.
Just Remember to check with your healthcare practitioner about consuming grapefruit juice if you're taking pharmaceutical drugs. Certain pharmaceutical drugs combined with grapefruit juice become more potent. Compounds in grapefruit juice, including naringenin, slow the normal detoxification and metabolism processes in the intestines and liver, which hinders the body's ability to breakdown and eliminate these drugs.

Sched When we think of child development we often limit our observations to Contac u e r physical development. We must remember that infants, toddlers, and classr le a for mo ! oom children are also developing socially, emotionally and intellectually. ation m r o f v n i i s Over the next few months we will be presenting a series of articles to it! help you recognize and understand the ages and stages of your child’s physical, social, emotional and intellectual development during the first five years. Remember these are only guidelines. Each child is unique and develops differently and at different times. Personality, learning style and family background can all play a part in the learning process. Keeping this in mind, there are, however, some general similarities that can help track your child’s progress. Kidz 1st Network Parent Link Centre offers developmental screening so that you may understand these stages of development and access information for early intervention if this seems appropriate. You also may Contact Trina Lloyd at 403-901-0516 or want to use the information to help you plan activities and responses to strathmoremontessori@hotmail.com your child’s development that will enable him or her to develop to his or her full potential. Month 1 – Baby will look at you and watch dangling things or mobiles for a short time. She will make small, throaty sounds like ‘oooh’ and ‘aaah.’ Your baby will respond to loud noises with a sudden start. She enjoys being talked to and cries when hungry or uncomfortable. She will calm when comforted. Month 2 – Baby recognizes familiar voices and people and smiles in response to their smiles and voices. Baby can turn his head to both sides and follow objects with his eyes. Baby may be able to roll from side to back. He moves his arms and legs and bicycles with his legs when excited. He is fascinated by his own hands and holds his head up (with the occasional ‘bob’), when held at your shoulder. Month 3 – Baby raises her head when on tummy and plays with her hands by clasping them and bringing them to her mouth. She will gurgle or coo and stop sucking to hear sounds around her. She turns her head to follow moving objects, voices or music. She uses her voice in response to adult talk and smiles when others talk and smile. She responds to familiar people and may stop or start crying according to who holds her. The following are some ideas to help you encourage your child’s development. Comfort, play with, and teach your child by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Your voice is an important part of your baby’s development. Babies find comfort in familiar voices and learn to respond with their own coos, gurgles and squeals of delight. Talk, sing or coo to your baby during activities such as bathing, feeding, dressing, and changing baby’s diaper. Finger plays (Round and Round the Garden), games of peek-a-boo, gentle bouncing on your knee (Ride-a-horse), singing songs and saying rhymes all contribute to your baby’s development. You are your baby’s first friend and your relationship with your baby will be a big influence on future social relationships. Get to know your baby, how they like to be handled; firmly or lightly, quickly or slowly. Massage her legs and arms, gently move your baby’s legs and arms while playing and talking with her. Most importantly respond to baby’s crying. It is his only way of communicating his needs. Hold baby close, look at her, smile and tell her how wonderful she is! Kids Are Funny! A mother took her 9-year-old daughter to church for the first time. The church lights were lowered, and then the choir came down the aisle, carrying lighted candles. All was quiet until the little one started to sing in a loud voice, “Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you...” A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children fell to discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back,” said one youngster. “No,” said another, “he’s just for good luck.” A third child brought the argument to a close. “They use the dogs,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrant.” Finding one of her students making faces at others on the playground, Ms. Smith stopped to gently reprove the child. Smiling sweetly, the Sunday School teacher said, “Bobby, when I was a child, I was told if that I made ugly faces, it would freeze and I would stay like that.” Bobby looked up and replied, “Well, Ms Smith, that explains what happen to you.” A kindergarten pupil told his teacher he’d found a cat, but it was dead. ‘How do you know that the cat was dead?’ she asked her pupil. ‘Because I pissed in its ear and it didn’t move,’answered the child innocently. ‘You did WHAT???’ the teacher exclaimed in surprise. ‘You know,’ explained the boy, ‘I leaned over and went ‘Pssst!’ and it didn’t move.’ www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Strathmore Children’s Festival The Strathmore Children’s Festival was an idea that was born last June when a Strathmore teen lost his life to a drug overdose. The town was affected in an enormous way and sparked many questions about the youth in the town and their extracurricular activities. The youth answered back with their own concerns about how they were being viewed in society. The town itself seemed divided, which made the Children’s Festival seem like a great idea. What if we had a day focused entirely on youth? What if the town came together to showcase what we do have available for them in terms of sports clubs, entertainment, professional services and retail? Upon hearing about our ideas, Encana stepped forward as a title sponsor to ensure this event could occur and be open to everyone, meaning no admission, and lots of family fun. Encana is very community-focused and believes in the power of our youth. They have been our number one supporter all along. Prairie Strathmore has also been an amazing support. They are new to the community but more than willing to make this event happen. Between now and March 10, 2012 we are committed to lining up all the local children’s “stuff” we can find. If you are interested in participating in the festival please do not hesitate to contact (403) 923-8983 or email smorechildfest@hotmail.com www.thenewsyneighbour.com

“I Am an Animal Rescuer”
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand. I have hugged those that are vicious and afraid. I have climbed under stairs and porches to save puppies and kittens. I have driven an hour with an injured animal to the vets in the middle of the night. I have fallen in love a thousand times, and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count. I am an Animal Rescuer. My work is never done, my home is never quiet, my wallet is always empty - but my heart is always full.
The Bear and the Rabbit A bear is chasing a rabbit through a forest. They find a bottle and decide to rub it. A genie pops out. He says, “I will grant each of you three wishes.” The bear says, “I wish all the bears in the forest were females.” *poof* It’s done. The rabbit says, “I wish for a motorcycle.” *poof* It’s done. The bear says “I wish all the bears in this country were females.” *poof* It’s done. The rabbit says, “I wish for a lifetime supply of carrots back at my house.” *poof* It’s done. The bear asks himself why the rabbit is wasting his wishes on stupid small things? Oh well. “And for my third wish, I wish that all the bears in the world were female.” *poof* It’s done. The rabbit says, “For MY last wish, I want the bear to be gay.” And he rides off on his motorcycle.

Old English Mastiff Puppies
FOR SALE
Gentle Giant Acres is proud to announce Dyna & Chopper’s first litter of 10 puppies
Through owning this beautiful breed, we have learned the Mastiff is the gentlest of giants. One has been in our family for 3 years and the other for 1.5 years. They are a soulful breed and very much a family dog. They are extremely affectionate and loyal. Because of their large size it is very important to establish from a puppy that YOU are the pack leader. This breed can reach weights up to 230+ lbs. This breed will grow for 3 years. Mastiffs were used on the front lines during World War II. They are a working dog and love to do just that. We put the mom and dad of these pups in the 2010 Christmas parade in Strathmore. They pulled a sleigh of toys for the kids. They are great with kids and other people. They are the top of their breed.
All 10 puppies were born Dec. 1st, 2011. They are CKC registered. They have had their first set of shots, de-wormed and micro chipped. They are ready for their new homes on February 1st 2012.

Increase the laughter, excitement and joy in your home by adopting a cat People are social and we all highly value our interactions with friends and family. While you might not think the same of cats, people who have more than one can attest that having multiple cats can make everyone in the household - two-legged and four-legged - a little happier. Cats need stimulation, friendship, companionship, play and exercise, and these are all things that a second cat can help provide. Adopting two cats can be twice the fun. Emily Armitage, spokesperson for the Anti-Cruelty Society, estimates that cats are surrendered to shelters at up to twice the rate as dogs, depending on the time of year. More litters of cats are born than dogs, so shelter staff must work even harder to find each kitten a “furever” home. There are a lot of good reasons to adopt two cats. While cats are often misunderstood as solitary beings, cats are extremely social. They get lonely when left by themselves, and cat owners often report that a cat will mourn the loss of a feline friend. But before you add a new pet to any home, you need to be prepared. Take a minute to make sure you and your family are ready. These are the top 10 things you should consider before you adopt a cat: 10. Scratching is a healthy form of exercise for cats. When you adopt a cat, pick up a scratching post, or other items, to give your new pet a healthy place to “work out.” 9. Visit your veterinarian to get advice on parasite controls for fleas and ticks. Prevention is the best cure. 8. Make sure everyone in your house is prepared for the new pet. In fact, make the visit to the shelter a family affair, so that all members of the family can help pick an appropriate cat - or cats. Everyone needs to be on board to provide the best quality of care. 7. Make a catcare budget. Litter, cat food, scratching posts, veterinary care, perhaps a little catnip - add this all up and you’ll see that cats are far from expensive pets, but these are costs for which you should be prepared. 6. Stock up on supplies before you bring the cat home. This will help your cat feel at home from the first moment they arrive. In addition to a scratching post, you’ll need a litter box (be sure to show your new kitty where it is), cat litter, food and water bowls, cat food, toys, perhaps a cat bed and grooming tools like a brush, toothbrush and nail clippers. 5. Cat-proof your home. Did you know that cats can swallow loose string or tinsel, and that they can cause stomach or bowel obstructions? Cats are sometimes attracted to power cords and will chew on them - resulting in a powerful shock. Kittens have also been known to swallow paper clips. 4. Call your veterinarian to ask for health tips. A quick consultation with your veterinarian before the cat arrives and a visit soon after you adopt the cat will give you the information you’ll need to keep your cat healthy. 3. Include your cat in your home emergency plan. If there is a fire, flood, storm or other disaster, your new pet needs you to be a hero. 2. Pick a cat with a personality that matches your own. According to animal behaviourists, round-faced, long-haired cats are often more mellow in personality, while short-haired cats with triangular faces can be a bit more active and fun, although there are always exceptions to this rule. Take the time to get to know a cat to make sure it will be a good fit. 1. Mark your calendar to visit your veterinarian twice a year for a wellness checkup. Cats are often perceived as selfsustaining. But, many cats do not show obvious signs of pain, discomfort and other symptoms when they are ill, so you may not realize you have a sick cat at home until it’s too late. Bottom line? Two cats will bring you twice the fun, but it’s up to you to make their lives healthy, safe and happy. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Croton This plant is very attractive with its colourful leaves. The leaves are shiny and leathery. There is an endless variety of foliage colours, with spots, splotches, stripes, and bands of pink, red orange, brown, white and green. Leaves are brightly coloured when young. Then darken as they mature. Pinch regularly and remember to wear gloves as the sticky white sap is slightly toxic. They don’t like to be moved. They will react by losing their leaves by the dozens when they are not happy. When they are young they will adapt, as they get older they need to be settled. They like bright light. Plants kept in low light are not as colourful. Keep soil evenly moist. They like humidity. Avoid cold drafts. Jade Jade plants grow in a tree like form. They are easy to grow in homes and offices. Their leaves are shiny, dark green and plump. They seldom grow more than 24 inches or 60 centimeters tall. Plants more than ten years old may flower in the winter. Allow the soil to become almost dry between watering. Fertilize every two weeks from spring to fall. This is a good plant for the office, as it needs only four hours of indirect sunlight. This plant is supposed to bring good luck. African Violet These pretty little house plants do not like to touch clay pots. Their leaves will fall off if they have to rest upon the clay sides. They like to be watered from the bottom. They do not like to get their leaves wet. You can use a soft small paint brush to brush the dirt off the leaves and get them clean. They have round hairy leaves that need gentle care. These plants do not like direct sun. They are happy to be a little neglected. African Violets are so delicate; looking like little doilies, they always make me think of my mother. These plants are definitely one of my favourites. I hope you enjoy these plants. The African Violets always make me think of my grandmother, and we can all use a bit of luck with the jade plant. Crotons are bright, cheery, plants that remind us that spring is coming. A garden requires patient labor and attention . Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them. ~ Liberty Hyde Bailey Gardeners instinctively know that flowers and plants are a continuum and that the wheel of garden history will always be coming full circle . ~ Francis Cabot Lowell

Dear Lifelines: I can’t seem to get motivated at work. I don’t enjoy it anymore but need to tough it out for the money. I feel like I’m trapped. Any ideas? Trapped Dear Trapped, Few of us can say that we haven’t experienced what you are going through right now. It might seem like an impossible challenge when you just focus on how much you hate your job and how you feel you are being forced to stay there for financial reasons. You might find yourself making excuses not to go to work, needing sick days, maxing out on your holiday time and generally looking for any reason to avoid work. As one might predict, if this type of behaviour continues you will quite possibly compromise your position and soon be out looking for another job because your boss noticed your lack of motivation, too. Not surprisingly, it’s best if you can avoid this outcome. It’s generally ideal to end your employment on your own terms and on a positive note, allowing you the ability to plan ahead in your search for another job and still be able to acquire positive references from your current employer. Perhaps start by weighing the pros and cons of your current job. You have to remember that going to a job that you hate every day will have an impact on your health and wellbeing. It might end up costing you a lot more in the long run if you need to take sick days, mental health days or find yourself in the position of unexpectedly losing your job altogether. In your list, try to think back to what attracted you to the job in the first place – the income? the job perks? the camaraderie with your co-workers? Just what has changed so that it is no longer a good fit? Focus on what you need to change in order to get a new job or more desirable position within the company. Perhaps you feel comfortable enough to ask your employer if there are any opportunities for subtle changes in your position. Can you change locations or alter your hours? Can you take on new or additional responsibilities that you might find more rewarding? Can you eliminate some of your less desirable tasks by taking on these new responsibilities? Perhaps you can take some training that will get you out of the office and challenge you in more exciting ways, allowing for you to add
a few more features to your resume. More and more employers and progressive companies are looking at innovative ways to help retain employees by keeping them happy and healthy. Searching the net might provide you additionally with ideas as to what other employers are doing in order to be competitive. As you look around, you might be inspired by other job prospects or ideas that could propel you into a more suitable workplace scenario. Additionally, it’s a real disservice to yourself if you ignore how you are feeling. You have acknowledged that you need a change and now it’s time to do something about it. Imagine what you would be doing if you could do anything you wanted. What would your ideal job look like and where would it be? Would you be working with people, in a team environment, or isolated and working independently? There are many career questionnaires online that you might want to check out if you are not sure about options. Once you decide what your ideal job would be, go after it step by step. Do you need to get additional training? How much of a budget do you need? What is stopping you from getting that job? If you take the time to chart your course to your ideal destination, you will get there and it will be on your terms. In having that plan it might provide you with the inspiration and distraction you need to get through some challenging and less-desirable work situations. Best of Luck! “Nothing great has ever been achieved withLifelines. out enthusiasm.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Love, Health, Human Touch & Self-Massage! By Cynthia Barnesky
How do we that we really love and care for one another? It is known as touch, and the art of touch is self-massage. Studies show that without self-massage or massage, we humans will become ill; babies will lose weight, have a hard time growing up healthy, and will have a hard time developing healthy relationships with themselves and others. This touch can be from a loving parent, taker, sibling or any other person who is looking after the baby. As adults, without the tender caring touch, the body’s immune systems become compromised and we will also become ill, depressed, confused and the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies start to break down. Self-massage or massage is not just a touch; it is a way of showing love, caring, healing, and appreciation for yourself and others. Without self-massage or massage we cannot become the healthy, happy and loving human being we should be. Self-massage or massage is touch with a healing twist to it. For many humans without family, friends, or partners, there is always a way of having the greatest healing art of touch and this is though self-massage or massage. When we give our own self a massage, the body, mind and soul take a big breath of fresh air, helping to maintain, and prevent illness. All it takes is to learn some simple techniques that can be used on oneself or shared with someone you care for. So go ahead and share the great art of touch and show them and yourself just how much you really care!
That’s NOT Funny!
One evening a Husband, thinking he was being funny, said to his wife, “Perhaps we should start washing your clothes in ‘Slim Fast’. Maybe it would take a few inches off of your butt!” His wife was not amused, and decided that she simply couldn’t let such a comment go un rewarded. The next morning the husband took a pair of underwear out of his drawer. “What the heck is this?” he said to himself as a little “dust” cloud appeared when he shook them out. “Sandy!”, he hollered into the bathroom, “Why did you put Talcum Powder in my underwear? “ She replied with a snicker. “It’s not talcum powder; it’s ‘Miracle Grow’!”

WHAT IS COLON HYDROTHERAPY (COLONICS) AND THE BENEFITS TO YOUR HEALTH? COLON HEALTH EMPHASIZES PREVENTION OF CHRONIC HEALTH PROBLEMS RATHER THAN CURE. WHAT IS A COLONIC? Come see us at the Colonics are the instrument controlled intestinal bathing of the colon for cleansing & therapeutic purposes, using warm, filtered, temperature & pressure regulated water. A colonic is an internal bath that helps cleanse the colon of poisons, gas, and accumulated fecal matter. Unlike an enema, it does not require the retention of water. You are not involved in March 31st & April 1st the evacuation process. There is no discomfort, no internal pressure, just a steady gentle at the Strathmore Civic flow of water in and out of the colon. At the same time, an abdominal, massage is given to Centre! stimulate the colon to recover its natural shape, tone and peristaltic wave action.

THE BENEFITS OF COLONICS
DETOXIFICATION - The colon along with the lungs, kidneys & skin are responsible for eliminating waste from your body. Colonics help remove stagnant fecal matter – eliminating bacteria, toxins, gas, mucous, cellular debris and an environment for parasites. REJUNVENATION - Reshapes: Over time, the natural shape of a problematic colon will become distorted, causing even more problems. The gentle water action and massage techniques will help eliminate protruding pockets of waste and narrow, spastic constrictions. After a series of colon hydrotherapy treatments, the colon may gradually begin to resume its natural shape. Exercises: Toxic debris build up weakens the colon and impairs its function. Gentle filling and emptying of the colon can improve muscle tone & peristaltic activity (natural muscular contraction), which aids efficient removal of waste material. RESTORATION - Promotes the return of normal, regular bowel movements. Restores proper pH balance to the body & provides a favorable environment for bacteria & micro flora for digestion. CLEANSES - Prevents toxins from a congested colon being reabsorbed into the bloodstream and being sent back to the liver for processing but allows for a route for all the toxins to be removed. HOW MANY COLONICS DO I NEED? The number of treatments will always vary with the individual and his/her condition. Often the waste is so hard and well lodged in the colon that it may take a series of colonics to sufficiently soften and loosen this accumulated fecal material. Some people may not have startling results for the first few treatments. This is why a series is necessary and advisable. Experience has shown positive changes at the third and fourth colonic. The suggested starting series would be a minimum of four colonics preferably over 7 to 10 days. Depending on the person, their health and their goals – the number of sessions and the time interval between may vary greatly. This will be assessed individually. Colonics are not proposed as a cure-all, but an important adjunctive approach to your overall health. They are most effective when employed in combination with healthy lifestyle choices. Good colon health is as much a function of the quality of food we eat, as our elimination status. A holistic nutritional consultation can be very helpful. A healthy colon is vital to living a life free of degenerative disease. If optimum health is your goal…..Colon Hydrotherapy could be most beneficial to you. Colon Hydrotherapy is not intended to replace the relationship with your primary health care providers and our consultation is not intended as medical advice. Vitamin D The fact that vitamin D prevents cancer is now so well known that even some conventional physicians are beginning to recommend it. Vitamin D prevents 77% of all cancers, after all. That’s as close to a “cure” for cancer as you’ll ever get (and it’s free, too, since you can make it yourself!). But did you also know that vitamin D prevents heart disease? In fact, most people suffering from heart disease are chronically deficient in vitamin D. By correcting their vitamin D levels (through sunlight exposure or by taking vitamin D3 supplements), people can simultaneously halt cancer and prevent heart disease, too. Ways to get your dose in winter As evidence of the health benefits of Vitamin D continues to grow, running out and catching a few rays of sunshine has never felt healthier. However, here in the northern hemisphere, the days of sunshine are a few months away and it’s time for Canadians to start looking elsewhere for their daily vitamin D fix. In the past, vitamin D was known to reduce the risks of osteoporosis, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Now there’s strong data to suggest it’s a formidable weapon in the fight against cancer. The big questions are, how much vitamin D do we need and what’s the best way to obtain it? The first question is a bit trickier than the second. In its latest news release on the subject, Health Canada recommends adults 19 to 50 need 200 international units (IU) of vitamin D per day – that includes pregnant and lactating women. Everyone over the age of 50 is advised to take a daily supplement of 400 IU of vitamin D, and parents are told to give children over two years of age two cups of milk a day (one cup of milk has 100 IU of vitamin D). However, the Canadian Cancer Society recommends 1,000 IU a day and the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors goes as far as recommending 2,000 to 4,000 IU a day. How to get your daily D-dose In addition to being able to pop vitamins into our systems via a tablet, our bodies create vitamin D when exposed to UVB rays from the sun. Generally, doctors recommend that 10 to 15 minutes outdoors at least twice a week in summer without sunscreen is adequate. Catching some rays is simple in summer, but the sun becomes so weak in Canadian climates in fall and winter that our bodies don’t get much UVB exposure (even when they aren’t bundled up against cold weather). Some health experts generally advise against going to tanning salons, but in winter time this is a potential option for people looking to boost their vitamin D level – as long as they do their homework. Special lights used to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder also won’t help in the vitamin D department. That’s because they don’t emit UVB rays. A tanning bed with medium-pressure lamps that generate UVB rays is one way to help the body make vitamin D during months when the sunshine is weak. WANT TO HAVE SMOKY EYES? The trend for smoky eyes has been a big style for quite a while and shows no sign of going away. The key for perfect smoky eyes, as always, is proper blending. You need to make sure that the colours are blended together flawlessly. It is very important to pair light base colours with rich dark colours. Some examples of this are: a soft gold base with deep purple on top; champagne base with bright blue; or a peach base with green hue. Have fun! Submitted by Shirra Turner The Newsy Neighbour

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, Derek Donais —Martin was beginning to despair—it was taking too long. He knew now the summons hadn’t been heard, but he had no idea why, or what he had done wrong. He also knew that the three men behind him, outside the ring of standing stones, were growing increasingly anxious and probably suspected what he already knew in his heart.—
This month’s review deals with the novel, Sky-Water Blue, an epic fantasy written by local author Keith Jones. I received this book some time ago and promised to give it a review. It has proven to be a rather difficult book for me to critique. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the story; I felt that it was a solid plot with some very original ideas. The only issues I had were with its presentation. Overall, the book flowed fairly well and included a number of strong points. It wasn’t polished to the extent that I would have hoped, however. The author does a good job weaving the two main plot lines together. The first involves Elias, a master mage, and his apprentice, Martin, and their connections to the race of ancient sky and earth dragons. The master mages of Teneram are able to communicate with the dragons and to call on them for aid if need be. Rakis, a former pupil of Elias, has discovered a means to subvert the fire-water dragons through dark, blood-magic. Rakis kills Elias, leaving Martin as the sole individual remaining who can summon the sky and earth dragons to assist in defeating Rakis and his evil plot. Making this feat all but impossible is the fact that Rakis’s dark magic has placed these guardian dragons into a deep, unbreakable slumber. The second main storyline concerns Melanie and Haristen, who are actually the daughter and son of the last Queen of Teneram. During a coup at the beginning of the novel, the Queen is killed when the palace is overrun and an attendant must flee with Melanie and Haristen, whose real names are Annalise and Davidan. The attendant manages to find a place of temporary safety for the siblings and they are brought up as children to common parents, their true identities kept from them. As Rakis devolves further and further from his humanity and into demonic madness, his dragons and mercenary legions scour Teneram, looking for survivors to eliminate or enslave. Against overwhelming odds, Martin, Melanie and Haristen must find a way to counter the evil mage’s spell and release the guardian dragons before Rakis destroys everything. There is a good deal of action and excitement at various stages in the book and Jones interlaces several other, minor characters quite effectively throughout these two main plot lines along the way. Again, the book is enjoyable for the most part, as long as the reader can put up with the previously-mentioned lack of polish. Specifically, I am referring to lapses in verb tense and grammatical errors. A slight tendency towards point of view ambiguity is also present. Still, fans of adult fantasy tales will find Sky-Water Blue a mostly entertaining read. Page 44

MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF The world is truly a fantastic and fabulous place, and being aware of what is happening around the world is one of my sister’s favourite pastimes. She calls me all the time telling me of all the weird and incredible happenings going on all around us that we are not even aware of. Space weather is one of those things, and what’s really interesting is that everything the sun is doing affects us each and every day. What is Space Weather? Much of space weather is driven by energy carried through interplanetary space by the solar wind from regions near the surface of the sun and the sun’s atmosphere. For much of the Space Age, the sun, Earth and the space in between have been studied separately. Yet scientists have long suspected that our planet and its star form a connected, dynamic system. A wide array of technology is used to monitor space weather. Ground-based telescopes, radar and supercomputers are used alongside these spacecraft to provide a picture of current and future space weather conditions. To the unaided eye, space appears to be a vast, dark void, and the sun a tranquil sphere of light. But in fact, space is not empty because Earth’s orbit lies within the atmosphere of our dynamic sun. Our Solar System has the cosmic equivalent of wind, clouds, storms, and hurricanes called space weather. The solar wind pushes and stretches Earth’s magnetic field into a vast, comet-shaped region called the magnetosphere. The magnetosphere and Earth’s atmosphere protect us from the solar wind and other kinds of solar and cosmic radiation. As the solar wind flows past the magnetosphere, it acts like a cosmic generator, producing millions of amps of electric current. Some of this electric current flows into Earth’s upper atmosphere, which can light up like a neon sign to create the mysterious and beautiful aurora. Magnetic storms shake-up Earth’s magnetic field and they produce huge amounts of power – a million mega-watts! That’s enough to power Canada for a couple of days. Most of this energy and radiation flows out into space, but we do see effects near Earth’s surface. Besides causing beautiful auroras, these storms can disrupt satellite broadcasts and even damage electrical power systems. Like meteorologists who check temperatures, winds, and pressure to predict the weather on Earth, scientists monitor the sun and our space environment to forecast the weather in space. They monitor the solar wind as it blows toward Earth to see if it is carrying foul weather, and they measure the energy flowing into Earth’s upper atmosphere and the distortion of magnetic fields near the ground. From these bits of information, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts whether our space weather will be mild or wild. There’s no need to run for cover from space weather. Storms from the sun do not directly harm life on Earth – but they do affect the way we live, particularly since we rely so much on modern technology. Magnetic storms can pump extra electricity into our power lines and pipelines, causing blackouts and fuel leaks. In March of 1989, an immense area of Sunspots large enough to contain 70 Earth-size planets had come into view around the eastern edge of the sun. Created by intense magnetic fields, the giant Sunspot group suddenly brightened and expanded to cover hundreds of thousands of square miles. This solar eruption, called a flare, was accompanied by a huge burst of electromagnetic radiation and a large coronal mass ejection, or CME. The radiation, mostly in the form of X-rays, traveled at the speed of light and was detected on Earth about eight minutes after the flare erupted. Carried along by the solar wind that blows continuously away from the Sun at speeds of up to several million m.p.h., the energetic particles from this CME happened to intercept Earth in its orbit around the Sun, generating huge sheets of electrical current above Earth’s surface. These currents produced magnetic field changes below Earth’s surface, and led to a complete collapse of the Hydro-Quebec power grid. Storm damage was estimated to be around $50 million. Sooo, the next time you are basking in the sun and feeling its warmth upon your face, remember: it is probably the greatest power in our tiny little universe. Kathryn Hartwell Page 46

What does your body language say about you? As we all know, communication is essential in society. Advancements in technology have transformed the way that we correspond with others in the modern world, yet when conversing face-to-face, it’s not only speech we verbalize that matters. Body language is truly a language of its own. We all have quirks and habits that are uniquely our own. What does your body language say about you? And what can you learn about others by becoming aware of what some of the signs mean? I thought it would be fun to list some of the well-known signs that body language experts study and recognize. It is said that when talking to a person, the information that we receive can be broken down as: 10% from what the person actually says. 40% from the tone and speed of voice. 50% is from their body language. HEAD Lowering one’s head can signal a lack of confidence. If someone lowers their head when complimented, they may be shy or timid. Touching or tugging at one’s ear can indicate indecisiveness. Sincere smiles encompass the whole face (noticeable in the eyes). A false smile usually only engages the lips. Tilting one’s head can symbolize interest in something or someone. Overly tilted heads can be a sign of sympathy. Closing of eyes or pinching at the bridge of one’s nose is often done when making a negative evaluation. When a listener nods, this is usually a positive message and relays that they are interested and paying attention. However, excessive nodding can imply that the listener has lost interest but doesn’t want to be rude. Touching/rubbing one’s nose may indicate doubtfulness or rejection of an idea. Sticking out one’s chin toward another may show defiance. Resting a hand on one’s cheek is often done if they are thinking or pondering; and stroking the chin can mean the person is trying to make a decision UPPER BODY Pushing back one’s shoulders can demonstrate power and courage. Open arms means one is comfortable with being approached and willing to talk/communicate. Folded arms show that there is a sort of barricade between them and other people (or their surroundings) and indicate dissatisfaction. Resting one’s arms behind their neck shows that they are open to what is being discussed and interested in listening more. Pointing one’s finger can be construed as aggression or assertiveness. Touching the front of the neck can show that someone is interested and concerned about what another is saying. Hand movements that are upward & outward signify positive and open messages. Palms that are faced outwards towards another indicate one’s wish to stop and not approach. If one’s fingers are interlaced or if the finger tips are pressed together, it usually shows that a person is thinking and evaluating. If offering ideas to other people, many times the sides of one’s palms are www.thenewsyneighbour.com
close together, with fingers extended. LOWER BODY Putting your hands on your hips can show eagerness and readiness (also, at times, aggression). Hips pushed forward, while leaning back can show that one feels powerful (also can be a suggestive gesture). A wide stance - where one’s feet are positioned far apart - signifies more power and dominance. When one sits with legs open and part, they might feel secure in their surroundings. Crossed legs can mean several things: relaxed/ comfortable, or defensive - depending on how tense the leg muscles are. When you cross your legs towards another person, you are showing more interest in them than when they are crossed away in the other direction. A confident and powerful position is the “Figure of Four Cross” when one’s ankle is atop the other leg’s knee and the top leg is pointed sideways. Bouncing your foot if your legs are crossed can show that you are bored or losing patience. EYES The lowering of the eyes can convey fear, guilt or submission. Lowered eyebrows and squinted eyes illustrate an attempt at understanding what is being said or going on. A lack of confidence or apprehensiveness can be displayed when you don’t look another person in the eyes. One tends to blink more often if nervous or trying to evaluate someone else. If you look directly into another person’s eyes you are displaying self-assurance. Wide eyes show more of an interest in a subject or person. If you are irritated with a comment made by another during a conversation, a common movement is to take a quick glance sideways. Staring at someone can be an aggressive gesture or suggest that the one staring feels dominant. Recalling a memory is usually done by looking up and to the right. Looking directly upwards can indicate that one is thinking. Eye contact is normally broken if someone feels insulted by another

Quick Bathroom Fixes Add Style and Luxury Want to increase the value of your property? Update your bathroom. This strategic remodel invariably turns out to be money well spent. Financial considerations aside, spending time in a pretty, cheerful bathroom can lift your spirits every day. And, if you’ve done most of the work yourself, a sense of accomplishment will add to your pleasure. The process is actually less expensive and easier than you might expect. Start with the largest object in the room -- the bathtub. Replacing it is not a quick fix, but a big, expensive undertaking because it involves plumbers, tilers, flooring contractors and more. But a new look can be achieved with just a facelift. Find a specialist in bathtub and sink re-glazing; your fixtures will look brand new, and while the process can be accomplished speedily, the results are long lasting. New shower heads and faucets can make a big difference, both aesthetically and functionally. A rainfall showerhead can give you the feeling of being in a spa every time you shower. Faucets can be replaced at minimum cost from one of the many home improvement stores or online. This may be the time to call a trusted plumber. The fastest, most cost-effective decorating trick available is a big-impact shower curtain. Colour is the key, but extra touches can work wonders. “Adding ‘jewelry,’ which is what I call the trim, can enhance the look at a minimum price. Use beads, fringes, or tassels; since all curtains should have a plastic liner, just about any fabric or trim can be used. For a really coordinated look, buy two shower curtains and make one into a window treatment,” she suggests. Another transformation can come from a new wardrobe of towels, purchased inexpensively at sales or discount stores. Coordinate all your colours and styles. The more you repeat themes, the more you achieve a designer look. Repetition is a trick of the interior design trade. Trim on the shower curtain could be repeated on a window shade or on towels. Don’t forget waste paper baskets that can carry your theme to another dimension in accessorizing the room.” Lighting is crucial in setting the mood of any space. New lighting fixtures can be very inexpensive, with no rewiring needed to create a noticeable cosmetic change. Visit home improvement stores, then compare prices online where you may find real bargains. Dimmer switches can be used to brighten the bathroom for cosmetic application, or be turned down for mood setting. Lower the lights in the bathroom, light some candles, play music in the background, and look around at all you’ve accomplished; you’ll have a spa experience, enriched by the warm glow of personal achievement. Ridiculous and Weird Facts About the Human Body Did you know that you may not have felt real empathy until you graduated from high school? Or, that your brain is the consistency of tofu? The following 50 ridiculous and weird (but true) facts about the human body can prove how little you might know about yourself (even if you are a surgical technician).
Head and Brain 1. The average adult brain weighs just under 3 pounds and is the consistency of tofu. 2. Although multitaskers are extremely confident in their abilities, evidence exists that shows those people are actually worse at multitasking than most people. 3. When considering an action that would affect others, teens were less likely than adults to use the medial prefrontal cortex, an area associated with empathy and guilt. 4. Overall, over time, human brains have shrunk. But, brain size has nothing to do with intellect. 5. According to one calculation, the average human head contains 456 trillion atoms. 6. The brain accounts for about 2 percent of body weight, but it uses about 20 percent of the oxygen in our blood and 25 percent of the glucose circulating in our bloodstream. 7. The old saying that we use just 10 percent of our brainpower isn’t true. We use every part of our brain, even in daily functions. 8. The brain actually stores different parts of a memory in different locations. 9. It turns out that both true and false memories activate similar brain regions.

Funny Observations from Current Events
Here are some funny observations after keeping an eye on current events. • According to a poll, 43% of Americans thought God helped Tim Tebow win football games. But many of them also resented it because that meant God was sitting at home watching football while they were at church. • President Obama was in Disney World last week where he unveiled his new plan to create jobs. Appropriately, the code name they had for the plan was “Goofy.” • According to the CDC, 69% of Americans are overweight or obese. So, if California ever does fall into the ocean we’ll know why. • Newt Gingrich’s ex-wife had said that he wanted an open marriage. I don’t think that’s different than most politicians!? • A human head was found near the famous Hollywood sign in Hollywood hills. Parts of the brain was missing so police were pretty certain that it was a local resident rather than a tourist. • Joe Biden was at a Democratic fundraiser last week in San Francisco and he said, “The Giants are on the way to the Super Bowl.” After getting jeered he said he made a mistake because the San Francisco baseball team is the Giants. Who would have thought Biden would ever get confused? Anyway, since the subject was football it is appropriate that he BRAND NEW CONDOS FOR RENT stuck his foot in his mouth. • Last week a woman took her 5 year-old son along with her on a bank robbery. Apparently, she had no money for a baby sitter and that’s why she was robbing the bank. • Newt Gingrich overheard a newsman reporting about the election saying, “The stakes were very high.” Newt’s reaction was, “Steaks? I’ll have three, well done.” • Chris Christie had harsh words about Newt Gingrich’s past record. One reporter called it putting a knife into 1400 sq. ft. 3 bedrooms 2.5 baths Newt’s back. Naturally, Christie would have saved the $900 + (all utilities & condo fee)/mth fork for himself because he was going to lunch right afterNo smoking No pets word - hey, fat guys gotta eat.
