The Langdon Firehouse A Fresh Take Coming Out of a Classic Langdon Location

If you’ve driven through Langdon sometime over the course of these past few months, you might have noticed something different at the corner of Centre Street and Glenmore Trail. Maybe you’ve seen some of the hustle and bustle, or heard talk of a new local pub opening up. If you haven’t (and who can blame you, the weeks leading up to the holidays are always a busy time!), then let me be the first to point you towards the newest social hub and gathering place in our community: the Langdon Firehouse Bar and Grill! The Langdon Firehouse opened its doors on the tail-end of this past September, and has quickly gained a reputation throughout town for great service, exceptional food, and a casual, welcoming atmosphere that invites guests to feel comfortable and at ease. Making its home where the Langdon Crossing used to reside, the Firehouse aims to be local gathering point where community members can come together, kick back, and connect with one another face-to-face – the way it used to be done before the advent of phones and Facebook and social media. “I joke that I want to set up a bin at the front door that just says, ‘Cell phones here,’ and when people come in, they can just drop their phones off, and then grab them again when they leave…but I guess I’m just a bit old-school like that,” Firehouse owner Greg Thompson chuckles to himself during a recent conversation I had with him and the rest of the Firehouse team over the holiday season. It’s the middle of a December afternoon, and even though it should be a slower part of the day, there’s a lot going on. Customers are coming and going, tables are being served, and preparations are being made for another busy evening. If Thompson says he’s old-school, we’re not going to call his bluff: long-time Langdonites might remember him as the owner of this same location years ago – back then, it was known as Wildfire. “Long story short, I helped open Wildfire back in November of ’04 and I ended up leaving sometime around 2008. I didn’t agree with some of the choices being made back then, and with the direction the business was being taken,” Thompson told me, when I asked him how he came to once again find himself back in his old stomping grounds. “Things just weren’t going in a direction I was happy with, and I didn’t want to be a part of those choices. That said, it’s always haunted me all those years: the idea that I left something behind here that I hadn’t finished, and the potential to grow this business into something real special. It was home to me, and home for a lot of people, before things started to change. Since then, I would literally dream about getting this place back. Now, I’m back here, and we’re building towards something, and it’s brought me a lot of peace. I feel like dreams really do come true – I go to bed every night now with a smile on my face.” Speaking with Thompson, it’s clear that he’s passionate not only to see the Firehouse succeed, but to have it be something more than just a local pub.

With a proven track-record of successful bar and restaurant management, there’s no doubt that Thompson will once again be at the helm of a prosperous local watering hole – but the end-game is much bigger than that. There’s a lot of love for Langdon within the Firehouse team, and plenty of that likely stems from the fact that they’ve all been such big players in the community for a very long time. Another reason is undoubtedly because the other half of the Firehouse’s ownership is Aleesha Gosling – Editor-in-Chief here at The Newsy Neighbour, and a force to be reckoned with when it comes to community spirit! While it might at first seem odd for the owner of a local magazine to suddenly decide to try her hand at restaurant management, there’s a method to the madness: Gosling saw an opportunity to create something unique. “I’ve been involved with the community through everything The Newsy Neighbour does over the past ten years, so I feel like I have a good idea about the people are looking for,” Gosling chatted with me as Thompson stepped away to help wrap up a kitchen order. “I’ve always felt a deep connection with Langdon, and so now that there’s this opportunity with the Firehouse, we’re looking to provide all sorts of community-oriented services and activities. We want to create a music program for kids to come and fall in love with playing instruments. We’re looking to host a jam to promote local musical talent every single Sunday, starting in the next month or two. We’ve already held a few paint nights, and will be holding lots more, and these go to help out local community groups and organizations. I’ve got a big background in arts, so we’re using that – we had everyone in here painting mugs the other day! We have big spaces for groups to come in and use; and we’re going to be a huge part of the ball league when the LSA gets going again this spring – that one’s important to me, because I’ve played on that league for years.” Gosling detailed a few more exciting up-and-coming events and milestones on the horizon for the Firehouse (including a new menu and delivery service launching this January!), after which she summed everything up quite nicely: “Bottom line, we’re not just a bar and restaurant. We want to be something for everybody. We feel a real connection to the community, and everything we’re trying to do is meant to be something for the people here.” Of course, it takes more than Thompson’s respectable work ethic and Gosling’s can-do community spirit to run a bar and grill – someone’s got to be cooking up the grub! That’s where Bill Martin comes in. “I’ve been a chef for about 42 years now,” Martin told me as I enjoyed one of the most delicious beef and cheese dip sandwiches I’ve ever had (seriously, that gouda is incredible!). “Had my own restaurant for 15 of those years. Started here in June, and since Greg’s taken over, we’ve done some really great things. We’re really excited for our new menu in January, and we’re building momentum.” “We let Bill do whatever he wants here – the man knows what he’s doing!” Thompson interjected, his admiration for Martin’s work clearly showing through. Martin grinned, and continued. “We’re learning right now what works and doesn’t work, and how we fit in, and it’s only getting busier as we move forward. My responsibility here is food, and we’re focused on bringing it up to a level that it hasn’t been for a long time. Plate presentation, creative dishes, all that kind of stuff is a priority now, which is very exciting. I’m doing what I think will work here, and people seem to be liking it.” Listening to the enthusiasm Martin brings to the table when speaking about his food is invigorating, but just like the rest of the Firehouse team, he’s got a second driving passion: community. “Our goal is to work with the community, to be part of the community. We don’t want to just be a restaurant and bar – we want to be a part of everything Langdon is doing.” Hearing from all three members of the Firehouse brass just how important Langdon and the surrounding community is to them definitely warmed my heart that chilly December afternoon. The name hanging over the door may have changed a fair frequent number of times these past years, but I really feel like there’s something truly special about the Langdon Firehouse. “I’m a very old-school cat, and the Firehouse is going to be a little out of the norm,” Thompson told me during our conversation, summing up the philosophy of the Firehouse quite succinctly. “We’ve got a great team, with Aleesha, Bill, and all of our hard-working servers and kitchen staff. For me, in a perfect world, I want to pick up where I left off. And that means being a part of the community, being a part of fundraisers, bringing in live music, and creating a second home-away-from-home for everybody who walks through our doors.” If you haven’t had a chance to experience the new Langdon Firehouse Bar and Grill, what are you waiting for? Head on over tonight – there’s bound to be some good tunes playing, and you couldn’t ask for tastier food, a more welcoming environment, or a friendlier team of staff! facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

After receiving The Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Award for Best Bakery in 2016, I spoke with The Newsy Neighbour staff to thank them for what they did for my small business – creating local awareness and increased traffic. It still sounds rehearsed, and I wish people could hear what I say about it – the emotion [ just] comes out. [It] was a heartfelt thank you because you had no idea what you did for me as a small business. It meant so much to me that so many people came in to check out My Bakery Shop and then vote for us! ~ My Bakery Shop, Langdon

Perfect Pie Crust The following pie crust recipe makes enough for two double crust pies and can be used with all three of the pie recipes to follow: Ingredients: 5 cups flour 1-pound lard or shortening* 1 tsp salt 1/4-cup ice-cold water (measurement is approximate) *(I prefer lard, as shortening sometimes makes the crust a bit tough) Method: Add salt to flour. Cut lard or shortening into flour to the size of pea-meal. Sprinkle flour mixture with half the water and stir lightly with a fork to mix. Add more of the cold water, just enough to bind the flour mixture into a loose ball. If necessary, add more cold water, a teaspoon at a time, until the mixture will hold its shape. Divide into four balls, and roll out on floured board as needed.

The absolute worst thing in the entire world happened recently. I mean, this is worse than when I stayed at the vet clinic for a few days about 10 years ago and left without my boy bits. It was traumatic to say the least, but I’d sooner experience that all over again, including the Cone of Shame, than what is happening to me right now. They got. I can barely get the words out.

A PUPPY. They got rid of the guinea pigs, which is fantastic. (Human interjection: we rehomed them to a home without young kids and with a full knowledge of guinea pigs to keep them happy and healthy the rest of their days!). (Dog interjection: I don’t care how happy they are. I am glad they’re gone!). But in their place, came this energetic ball of fur. She is SITTING IN MY BED!!!!! MY BED!!! I was laying in it, minding my own business, watching her from afar, when she came over and took over my bed. I had to leave to get away from her! And she likes to EAT MY FOOD!!! Mom keeps moving her when she’s trying to eat my food, but she keeps coming back. I haven’t eaten in 3 days. I am starving, but I can’t eat my food while she’s watching me. I can’t sleep when she’s watching me. I can’t do ANYTHING while she’s watching me. I am very aware of where she is at all times. And the two monsters who Mom brought home (human interjection: the kids) love her and play with HER more than me. You’d think I’d be happy with that, but I’m not. My entire life’s purpose is to hate those monsters, and now they’re not bugging me, which is taking away from my day of hating. I am all around not happy.

Send help! And take away that puppy! 12 •

Emeralds The emerald has one of the longest histories of all gemstones. The first known emerald mines were in southern Egypt

and were operated from before 1000 BC into the 1700's. This is a testament to the high value people have placed on emeralds for many centuries as the work was hard and dangerous and the stones small and poor by today's standards. Treasured for at least 4,000 years by different cultures all around the world, the emerald is said to quicken the intelligence as well as the heart. Legend gives its owner the gift of eloquence. In contrast to other beryl gemstones, the emerald is typically heavily flawed with cracks and inclusions of fluid and minerals. These inclusions are called "jardin" (or garden) as they typically resemble leaves and branches. These characteristics are not looked upon as negative aspects for emeralds, as they would be for other gemstones. Indeed, these inclusions are considered part of the character of the stone and are used to assure the purchaser that the stone is genuine. Because emeralds are so rare without inclusions, some inclusions are expected and do not detract from the value of the stone as much as with other gemstones. Most emeralds on the market today have been treated with various types of oil or resin to improve their appearance. Emeralds are cut in Jaipur, India and Tel-Aviv, Israel as well as in the mining countries, such as Brazil. The emerald is one of the most difficult gemstones to cut because of the high value of the rough stone and the many inclusions found in crystals. Small changes in orientation can make a large difference in the final appearance of the gem. Skilled craftsman who specialize in cutting emeralds can be found in cities around the world for jewelers who insist on having stones perfected for the optimum brilliance and vibrancy.

NEW YOU for the NEW YEAR Too many New Year’s Resolutions end in failure. Make yours a success this year by tackling one new habit a month for an entire year. By the end of the year, you’ll have twelve new habits that will benefit you for a lifetime.

January - Save more Money.

Cancel subscriptions you are not using. Call your cable company and ask them to lower your bill. Pack your lunch instead of buying it. Make your coffee at home.

February - Practice mindfulness.

Unplug more. Take one day off from social media per week. Smile more. Savour your food more. Don’t eat on the go; make it the main attraction.

March - Get organized.

Digitize your documents so you can let go of the paper copies. Purge your home of expired items. Food, medicine, makeup… If it’s expired or past its prime, throw it out. Turn every hanger in your closet around the opposite way. When you wear it and put it back, turn the hanger the right way. After a year, donate everything you haven’t flipped around.

April - Take up an anti-stress activity.

Practice meditation. There are many apps and YouTube videos that can teach you how to get started for free. Try colouring. Adult colouring books have taken off as a low-cost form of creative therapy. Start gardening. It is slow-paced, relaxing, and you can sometimes eat what you grow!

May - Eat more fruits and vegetables.

The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals. Melody Beattie 14 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

Drink your veggies. Invest in a juicer or blender to make it easier to get enough servings of vegetables. Keep healthy snacks on hand. Get rid of salty and sugary snacks. Institute “Meatless Mondays” in your home.

June - Value experiences over things.

Get involved in local groups. Find them through the Facebook group “Strathmore Positive Peeps” or your local library. Experience more live music. Plan a vacation, even if it’s just a weekend getaway.

Buy smaller dinner plates. Your eyes are bigger than your stomach. Less food will fill up a smaller plate. Divide your plate up the healthy way: half vegetables, one quarter protein, and one quarter starch. Fill up on a healthy meal before going to treat-laden holiday parties to avoid overeating calorific foods.

December - Practice generosity.

Use a site like Charity Navigator to identify a great charity for a cause that interests you. Make a commitment to volunteering, now and throughout the year. Contact local organizations to learn more about their volunteering opportunities.

September - Learn a new skill.

The free app Duolingo can help you learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and other languages. The free website Codecademy can teach you HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, PHP, Python, or Ruby. You can find free tutorials for just about any instrument on YouTube.

October - Protect yourself.

Learn how to create a strong password. Don’t worry about remembering your password’s; instead, use a tool like LastPass. Got a new big screen TV? Don’t leave the box on the curb, or anyone who drives by will know about it too! Resist broadcasting your vacations on social media; burglars look for signs a house is unoccupied before breaking in.

Do you want guidance, connection, clarity and direction in your life? Do you want to learn how to interpret the message you receive from an Intuitive Card Reading? First, I’ll explain what an Intuitive Card Reading is and why it would be a good investment to learn how to do one! Intuitive Card Reading, some would say, is a “gift” that is only for those who know they have the “gift”; however, really everyone and anyone can do an Intuitive Card Reading. All of us are connected to Source and this so-called “gift” can be learned and practiced. You can learn to connect, listen and feel the connection in receiving messages, for we all have the “gift” in one form or another; we just need to exercise this “gift”. The cards are used as a tool to help us focus on the vibrational energy from Source, the person receiving the Card Reading and the person doing the reading (conduit or lighting rod). There are a few things you must have thought about to do an Intuitive Card Reading: 1. Believe in yourself 2. Trust in the connection between Source and Self 3. Confidence in receiving the messages (the truth) 4. Unconditional love that you have been given to perform an Intuitive Card Reading 5. The ability to get yourself and your feelings out of the way of the truth (no judgement) 6. Faith in practicing doing Intuitive Card Reads for yourself and others 7. A deck of Cards Why do an Intuitive Card Reading? Great question, but to understand more about this “Gift”, you must hear why one starts getting Card Reading done first. I myself started receiving Card Reading about twelve to fifteen years ago. I was in a very unhappy and sad place in my life and needed some guidance, clarity and I was looking for my sense of worth. The messages received would help me understand why a situation was happening and what I could do to help learn from it. Sometimes it was just the knowing that I was not alone and that there were other energies that were in play to help guide and protect me and my family

(Angels, loved ones on the other side). Most readings were done for a need, based on how I was feeling. Sometimes after a reading, my situation changed just because I had clarity of how to deal with the situation, and it could be just as simple as practicing forgiveness for oneself and others. I really connected to the messages and was curious if I could do Card Readings for myself, so I went out and bought my first deck of cards; “Doreen Virtue’s - Messages from Your Angels Oracle Cards.” I just followed the booklet instructions and start to do the Card Readings for myself. Sometimes I would pull a card every day and then other times I would do a full reading for myself once a month or so. I got more and more confident in doing my card readings and I was also taking a “Healers Who Share” course, which helped me see and feel that this was something that I was good at, so in turn started doing Intuitive Readings for family and friends. I even did Card Readings around town and Calgary. I am still doing Intuitive Card Readings for myself and for others. There are eleven simple steps in learning to do Intuitive Card Reads: 1. Clearing and grounding self 2. How to pick your own deck of cards 3. Blessing your deck of cards 4. To let our deck of cards be touched or not to be touched 5. How to clean and clear your deck of cards (before and after a reading) 6. How to give a card reading for yourself 7. Different card reading spreads 8. How to give a card reading for others 9. Learn to feel, hear, see, taste and know other messages 10. Prayer of thanks 11. Practice

There is also going to be a bonus video that will be shared at the end of course! If you are interested in learning how to do an Intuitive Card Reading, I am offering this course in the beginning of February. It will be either a two day evening course or a one day weekend course. More info on pricing and dates will be posted on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/InnerClarityTransformation. Happy Holidays! I am looking forward to serving you in any way I can in 2018 and thank you to all my clients of 2017 in making this another successful and humbling year.

YOGA You may say yoga is not for me, but yoga is just not yoga; there are lots of different kinds for lots of different people. Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. All studios offer a Beginner Basics, which is recommended for those brandnew to yoga. You will learn about the philosophy and benefits of yoga, and practice basic breathing techniques and postures.

HATHA

Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. If a class is described as Hatha style, it is probably going to be slowpaced and gentle and provide a good introduction to the basic yoga poses.

VINYASA

Like Hatha, Vinyasa is a general term that is used to describe many different types of classes. Vinyasa, which means breathe-synchronized movement, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called Sun Salutations, in which movement is matched to the breath. A Vinyasa class will typically start with a number of Sun Salutations to warm up the body for more intense stretching that's done at the end of class. Vinyasa is also called Flow, in reference to the continuous movement from one posture the the next.

ASHTANGA

Ashtanga, which means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit, is a fast-paced, intense style of yoga. A set series of poses is performed, always in the same order. This practice is very physically demanding because of the constant movement from one pose to the next and the emphasis on daily practice. Ashtanga is also the inspiration for what is often called Power Yoga, which is based on the flowing style of Ashtanga with out keeping strictly to the set series.

BIKRAM/HOT YOGA

Pioneered by Bikram Choudhury, this style is more generally referred to as Hot Yoga. It is practiced in a 95 to 100-degree room, which allows for a loosening of tight muscles and profuse sweating, which is thought to be cleansing. The Bikram method is a set series of 26 poses, but not all hot classes make use of this series.

RESTORATIVE

Restorative yoga makes use of props to support the body as it relaxes into poses over the course of several minutes. The idea is to stay in each pose long enough to encourage passive stretching. Seated forward bends, gentle supine back-bends, and twists are examples of the type of poses that can be adapted to be restorative with the addition of props like blankets and bolsters. Often the challenge comes in learning to be still and let go.

YIN

This style of yoga targets the deeper tissues of the body - bones, joints, connective tissues, and fascia. Postures are practiced mostly upon the floor and are held for longer periods of time than other styles. For those yogis that wonder why sitting in meditation is still difficult even though you practice other forms of yoga (often very muscularly based), this class helps to balance the opposing forces within the body.

RAJA

Raja yoga meditation is generally based on directing one’s life force to bring the mind and emotions so into balance that the attention may be easily focused on the object of meditation. It is focused on movement as a form of meditation and linking body, breath, and mind; a flowing series of postures that are aimed at awakening the body, increasing clarity of mind and heightened awareness for the up coming day.

CHAIR YOGA

Chair yoga is a general term for practices that modify yoga poses so that they can be done while seated in a chair. These modifications make yoga accessible to people who cannot stand or lack the mobility to move easily from standing to seated to supine positions. Many of the basic body mechanics of the individual postures are retained, no matter the stance of the practitioner. While seated on chairs, students can do versions of twists, hip stretches, forward bends, and mild backbends. In addition to a good stretch, chair yoga participants can also enjoy other health benefits of yoga, including improved muscle tone, better breathing habits, reduction of stress, better sleep and a sense of well-being. It is great for seniors. There are many other styles of Yoga developed by various Yoga studios. Check out the closest studio near you to find out which styles they offer; there is a style suited for just about everyone.

WHY DO YOGA? The short answer is that yoga makes you feel better. Practicing the postures, breathing exercises and meditation makes you healthier in body, mind and spirit. Yoga lets you tune in, chill out, and shape up -- all at the same time. For starters, yoga is good for what ails you. Specifically, research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases.

What's more, yoga: • Improves muscle tone, flexibility, strength and stamina • Reduces stress and tension • Boosts self esteem

Antiaging Skin Care

‘Antiaging skin care’ is a very poplar concept in today’s world. Today, everyone wants to hide their age using antiaging skin care procedures (and a number of people are successful, too). However, antiaging skin care is not achieved by any magic potion. ‘Antiaging skin care’ is about discipline. It is about being proactive. Antiaging skin care is about stunting the ageing process. Here are a few tips for proactive antiaging skin care: 1. Maintain healthy eating habits: A well balanced diet is the key to maintaining a proper body metabolism. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables (raw); they are the best source of fibre and have a very refreshing effect on your body. Avoid oily and fatty food; not only do they lack in essential nutrients, but also cause obesity and other diseases that aid the aging process 2. Beat stress: This is probably the most important antiaging skin care measure. Stress disturbs the body metabolism and accelerates the aging process. Sleep, exercise and a relaxing bath, are all good ways of beating stress. Aroma-therapy is also known to

skin care procedure. Besides toning your muscles, it also helps in cleaning the skin by flushing out the toxins in the form of sweat. Exercise should be followed by a warm shower in order to completely remove the toxins. 5. Avoid the use of strong, chemical based products on your skin. Natural skin care products are a good option. Use of organic skin care products (home made or commercial) can be a very effective antiaging skin care measure. 6. Do not overuse skin care products. Excessive and harsh application, both are harmful. 7. Do not ignore skin disorders; it can lead to permanent skin damage. Try over the counter medication and if that doesn’t help, immediately visit your dermatologist and seek his/her advice. 8. Vitamin C based skin care products are very popular means of antiaging skin care. However, these seem to oxidise very quickly (which makes them harmful for the skin). So store them properly. If the product turns yellowish-brown, it means that vitamin c has oxidised and the product is no longer suitable for use. 9. Protect your skin against UV radiation; UV rays are known to speed up the aging process. So, a good sunscreen lotion should be a part of your antiaging skin care routine.

bust stress. 3. Drink a lot of water: Antiaging skin care can’t be any simpler than this. Water helps in flushing out the toxins from the body, hence keeping it clean and making it less prone to disease. Around 8 glasses of water (per day) is recommended by all doctors. 4. Regular exercise is a wonderful antiaging

Sleep Apnea Does your breathing repeatedly stop and start during sleep? This can be caused a potentially serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when the muscles around the tongue and throat relax to the point that it causes the tissues to block airflow to the lungs while you sleep. How do You Know if You May Have Sleep Apnea? You may snore loudly, you may feel tired even after a full night’s sleep, you may have breathing cessation during sleep, a morning headache, difficulty staying asleep, or waking suddenly, followed by shortness of breath. If you experience any of the following, it’s best to speak to your family doctor to get properly diagnosed. If your doctor has told you that you suffer from sleep apnea, it’s time to start exploring your options! What are some options for treating Sleep Apnea? People who are diagnosed with sleep apnea have a number of treatment options to consider. For individuals with severe sleep apnea, a CPAP machine is usually recommended. This option will provide continuous positive airway pressure through a mask to assist with breathing properly. An effective option to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea is a mandibular advancement appliance. The mandibular advancement device brings the lower jaw forward while wearing the appliance. This opens up your airway and allows oxygen to flow freely, allowing you to breathe better. In addition, the appliance can protect the teeth from the effects of clenching and grinding. For more information on the sleep appliance please contact our team at Langdon Dental.

Fitness for Women- Stay Fit and Healthy! Here are 10 tips for women to stay fit and healthy: 1. Staying fit and healthy starts with a balanced diet. Know and monitor the right weight for your age. Consult your doctor to learn what food you should avoid and follow your eating discipline routines. If you are trying to lose some weight, foods with high calories should be omitted from your meals. Food with high fibre and low fat should be included a priority in your grocery list instead of red meat, sugars and fats. 2. Drink plenty of water. Drinking at least eight glasses of water everyday. This cleanses the body from impurities. It is also advised for lactating women to increase water intake to keep the body hydrated. 3. Take vitamins and supplements. Do not forget your calcium supplement. Sufficient calcium intake is beneficial for women of all ages. This has been proven to prevent having cramps and Pre-Menstrual Period (PMS) Symptoms. It also prevents osteoporosis, especially for menopausal women. Vitamin E boosts strong immune system. Women who undergo menopausal period should take Vitamin E-400, as it stops night sweats and hot flashes. Also, Vitamin E is said to be best in avoiding wrinkles when aging. 4. Quit smoking. If you are smoking, stop. It is also a big “NO” for pregnant women, as this will affect the health of the baby. Pregnant women who smoke may pass the harmful content of cigarettes to babies through the bloodstream. Recent studies have shown that women smokers are more prone to diseases than men smokers. Women who smoke have a high risk of getting breast cancer. Also limit your alcohol intake. 5. Incorporate exercises in your daily routine. Take a walk after work, use stairs instead of elevator or play with your kids when you are at home. Home exercises are also effective, especially when you do not have time to go to the gym and would like to lose some weight. Yoga and Pilates are only a few of the many effective exercises you can do at home. Exercises help in limiting the risk of cardiovascular diseases. 6. Avoid stress. Many women are prone to too much stress. Stress has been known as cause to many sicknesses. As much as possible, take time to relax. Read a good book, hang out with friends and engage in sports. Pamper yourself. And do not forget to get enough sleep to revive your energy.

The skin is prone to cancer when exposed to too much sunlight. It also speeds up the aging of skin cells, which causes wrinkles to women. 8. peace in times of turmoil and greater joy in everyday situations. It brings focus to the year ahead. Oh yes, the Word of the Year is a very powerful tool. Whereas a New Year’s Resolution is designed as a goal for a specific area of your life (and 92% of resolutions fail within the first few months of the year), a Word of the Year is intended to be a guide in all areas of life. For example, my word for 2017 was River. Why? A river is always moving and it can bring life and sustain life. It can be calm and slow-moving and it can be fast and powerful. When it is faced with an obstacle, it looks for a way around it instead of giving up. It is dynamic and refreshing but what appealed to me most about ‘River’ is that it simply keeps flowing. In 2017, whenever I had a decision to make or was faced with a challenge, I reminded myself of the characteristics of a river and acted accordingly. I was aware of having balance in my life… times to be quiet and still, and times to move forward with purpose. When my home burned in the fall, I went with the flow of the process and didn’t fight against the current. I believe this has made the losses and the rebuild of my home go much smoother than if I didn’t have River as my guide. In addition to a Word of the Year, assigning a word to an event or an activity can also be powerful. In Toastmasters, there is a Word of the Day that is to help expand our vocabulary. My best friend and I recently began the SealFit Bootcamp workout program and each session is given a name such as Integrity, Discipline, Honour, Stamina, Balance and Courage. In each session, Mark Divine (founder of SealFit) talks about how the workout allows us to practice the word and how to look for the principle of the word in our daily life. Having these word associations has not only strengthened our commitment to the program but within a few days we were seeing how the focus on these words was also positively impacting our lives. Words are powerful. As you prepare to embrace 2018, what one Word could you use to guide you? Start with a list of possible words and then ask yourself what you need, what’s currently in your way, what would you like more of, what would inspire you. Select a word that reflects what you want to experience in the next year and then simply live your word by applying it in all areas of your life. Some possible words to get you started are: creativity, strength, truth, embrace, believe, sacred, awareness, shine, nourish, possibilities, patience, appreciation, discover, celebrate, courage, The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Could your family of 4 live off $50 a week in food? connection or expand. Your word could also be something whose characteristics you want to embody like my 2017 word, River. You may consider words like mirror, highway, sun, evergreen, wildflower or music. Whatever word you choose, trust that it is the right word to inspire and guide you through 2018. Words are also the foundation for story-telling which is another way to touch lives. In Women Talk each month, women share stories both from the mic as well as casually with each other before, during and after the evening’s program. Following one of our Women Talk evenings, everyone was asked to write down three words that expressed what they felt Women Talk offered. Commonly used words were inspiration, connection, laughter, friends, empowering, uplifting, strength, support, acceptance and heart (among many others). Join us each month in Strathmore and hear words… words that will welcome, entertain and inspire. By Marci Hira Nutrition Coach. Mom. Mental Health Advocate.

Now that Christmas is over, I'd like to introduce you to my new challenge starting January 1st, 2018!

The $50 a week food challenge

This challenge consists of $50/week in food to feed our family of 4. Reasons for the challenge: 1. Humility - In one month, we had spent $600 on restaurants and take out alone. I was ashamed. Not included, was the amount of food we wasted as if knowing we could just pick up more tomorrow. It made me take a step back and reevaluate our lives. What if my husband lost his income? What about our debt? That’s more than a car payment or half a month’s mortgage! 2. Creativity - As a Nutrition Coach, I help people of all backgrounds reach their goals. Whether it’s assisting with creative meal ideas, eating healthy on a budget, or teaching them the basics of nutrition. 3. Awareness - My ultimate goal is to raise $500 in cash and 500 items for the Wheatland County Food Bank, unbeknownst to them. If you would like to follow along, all information is posted on my Facebook page and Instagram account. There will be pictures, videos, and lists of what we’re starting with, grocery receipts, meals, and the “food hamper” we will at some point collect. Not to mention, the good, the bad, and the super ugly of what is sure to come with this challenge. Note: The food hamper is a list of items that are typically given from a Food Bank which we will purchase ourselves. Also note that the following will NOT be taken into consideration: 1. Cat food/litter 2. Diapers/Wipes 3. Toiletries I love receiving feedback and ideas! Could you and your family survive off $50 a week? Psychology and Tattoos Body art, body bling, self-graffiti, walking billboards, fashionable ink accessories... Each of these expressions depict the physical nature of the tattoo. What’s often NOT discussed, however, is the emotional side of tattoos.

In today’s society, a lot of people tend to misjudge tattoos. Someone with a lot of tattoos is a criminal, someone with a “tramp stamp” is considered a party girl, etc. Those who have tattoos are just like anyone else – except for the fact that they wish to stand out and broadcast who they are, simply because they have a strong sense of who they are. Those with tattoos aren’t afraid to show them, as they put them on their body to let others know who they are and what they are about.

West of shoppers and beside ATB

Tattoos used to be controversial. Now, they are more accepted than ever; even “trendy”! In the nightlife scene, tattoo artists are rapidly becoming a popular career choice. Although tattoos have been around for more than 5,000 years (Egyptians used tattoos to differentiate peasants from slaves and social branding has been around a long time), ink art has really exploded in the last 25 years. Tattoos are a conversation starter. When someone sees a particular tattoo, they often ask what it means, what it’s for, who it’s for. The emotional response from the sight of tattoos leads to a modern-day version of social branding. No matter where you look these days it’s a common thing to see someone with at least one tattoo. Tattoos have built their own reputation over the years, gaining in popularity. Over the years, more and more people have decided to get them – which only goes to show the phenomenon that is tattoos.

When you decide to look at the psychology of tattoos, you must first understand some of the meanings. People get tattoos for many reasons: for attention, self-expression, artistic freedom, rebellion, a visual display of a personal narrative, reminders of spiritual/cultural traditions, sexual motivation, addiction, identification with a group or even drunken impulsiveness (which is why many tattoo parlours are open late).

We take care of your ride to make sure you stay on the road!

Whether you like it or not, tattoos are growing in popularity. The long-term fear of being “marked for life” is being tempered by tattoo removal technology and people getting used to seeing tattoos.

The Rules of Sudoku

The classic Sudoku game involves a grid of 81 squares. The grid is divided into nine blocks, each containing nine squares. The rules of the game are simple: each of the nine blocks has to contain all the numbers 1-9 within its squares. Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box. The difficulty lies in that each vertical nine-square column, or horizontal nine-square line across, within the larger square, must also contain the numbers 1-9, without repetition or omission. Every puzzle has just one correct solution. This space is sponsored by...

Life Explained…

God created the dog and said, “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.” The dog said, “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?” So God agreed. Then God created the monkey and said, “Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-year life span.” The monkey said, “Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?” And God agreed. Then God created the cow and said, “You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.” The cow said, “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give you back the other forty?” And God agreed again. Thereafter God created humans and said, “Eat, sleep, play, marry, and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.” But the human said, “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?” “Okay,” said God, “You asked for it.” So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family… For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren… And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Life has now been explained to you. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

5 Steps to Raising Optimistic Children I had just completed a session with 17-year old Julie who suffered from severe depression. Julie believed she was a total failure and would never be able to change anything in her life. Julie also felt all her shortcomings were her own fault.

Registration Now Open For Winter/spring Programming:

Where, I ask myself, did such a young person acquire this negative and fatalistic thinking? The answer soon became apparent when I invited her parents into the session. They began discussing numerous life events and explaining them in ways that their children were learning. The car, for example, got dented because you can’t trust anybody these days; Mom yelled at brother because she was in a bad mood; you can’t get ahead in this world unless you know somebody, etc. As a parent, your own thinking style is always on display and your children are listening intently!

Jr Chef, Mad Science, Artistic Expression, Extreme Kids Watch for some exciting teen events that will be posted on our Facebook page.

The Importance of Optimism Why should you want your child to be an optimist? Because, as Dr. Martin Seligman explains: “Pessimism (the opposite of optimism) is an entrenched habit of mind that has sweeping and disastrous consequences: depressed mood, resignation, underachievement and even unexpectedly poor physical health.”

/StrathmoreYouthClub

Children with optimistic thinking skills are better able to interpret failure, have a stronger sense of personal mastery and are better able to bounce back when things go wrong in their lives. Because parents are a major contributor to the thinking styles of their children’s developing minds, it is important to adhere to the following five steps to ensure healthy mental habits in your children.

How Parents Can Help Step 1: Learn to think optimistically yourself. What children see and hear indirectly from you as you lead your life and interact with others influences them much more than what you try to ‘teach’ them. You can model optimism for your child by incorporating optimistic mental skills into your own way of thinking. This is not easy and does not occur over night. But with practice, almost everyone can learn to think differently about life’s events – even parents! Step 2: Teach your child that there is a connection between how they think and how they feel. You can do this most easily by saying aloud how your own thoughts about adversity create negative feelings in you. For example, if you are driving your child to school and a driver cuts you off, verbalize the link between your thoughts and feelings by saying something like, “I wonder why I’m feeling so angry; I guess I was saying to myself: ‘Now I’m going to be late because the guy in front of me is going so darn slow. If he is going to drive like that he shouldn’t drive during rush hour. How rude.’” Step 3: Create a game called ‘thought catching.’ This helps your child learn to identify the thoughts that flit across his or her mind at the times they feel worst. These thoughts, although barely noticeable, greatly affect mood and behaviour.

Indus is located approximately 15km East of Calgary on Hwy 22x

For instance, if your child received a poor grade, ask: “When you got your grade, what did you say to yourself?” Step 4: Teach your child how to evaluate automatic thoughts. This means acknowledging that they things you say to yourself are not necessarily accurate. For instance, after receiving the poor grade, your child may be telling himself he is a failure, he is not as smart as other kids, he will never be able to succeed in school, etc. Many of these self-statements may not be accurate, but they are ‘automatic’ in that situation. Step 5: Instruct your child on how to generate more accurate explanations (to themselves) when bad things happen and use them to challenge your child’s automatic but inaccurate thoughts. Part of this process involves looking for evidence to the contrary (good grades in the past, success in other life areas, etc). Another skill to teach your child to help him or her think optimistically is to ‘decatastrophize’ the situation – that is – help your child see that the bad event may not be as bad or will not have the adverse consequences imagined. Few things in life are as devastating as we fear, yet we blow them up in our minds.

I know not everyone has time to keep up-to-speed on politics. As we start the

New Year, I thought I would write-up a quick recap of recent events.

There’s always a lot going on in Ottawa, so I won’t be able to cover everything. However, I’ll do my best to mention the issues that I’ve heard the most about from you lately. I greatly appreciated the many calls, letters, and social media communications I’ve received from you. Our Conservative Leader, Andrew Scheer, has called on the Liberals’ Finance Minister, Bill Morneau, to resign. Morneau sure has been making a mess of things. He’s under investigation for breaking federal ethics law by introducing a bill that could directly benefit his family company. He won’t answer any questions about the timing of the sale of his stocks in Morneau Sheppell (his family company). So much for transparency. We hope to finally get some answers to these very serious questions in the New Year. The government is still rushing its marijuana legislation through. The legislation is now being considered by the Senate. The Liberals have announced that they will share more of the tax revenue with

the provinces than previously planned. They will now be allocating seventy-five percent of tax revenue to the provinces. However, we still need to know how much of that revenue the provinces will be sharing with the municipalities – they are the ones that will take on the burden of legalized pot. I believe it is also very important that the government launch educational initiatives on the dangers of marijuana. There are very real consequences for those who abuse the drug. I continue to believe the government is being far too hasty in forcing this badly designed Bill through. Rural crime remains a very serious issue in our riding of Bow River and across the country. Action simply must be taken to address this issue. My fellow Alberta Conservative MPs and I have launched the Rural Crime Task Force to address this growing problem and try to find solutions. I will be hosting a series of roundtables around the riding on this subject in early 2018, so stay tuned. If you have any input, please contact me directly. I will bring it to the attention of the Task Force. Lastly, the Liberals are continuing to make changes to their tax hike on small businesses. They have backed off on some of their proposals, but will still be changing the rules on passive income and introducing a ‘reasonableness’ test – these measures are going to be a bureaucratic nightmare. Thanks again to everyone who has joined us in keeping the pressure on the government to cancel these changes. I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year with your friends and loved ones, and that this helped get everyone up to speed for the start of 2018. Zombies vs Retirement

I have come to the very sad realization that I have probably spent more time planning how to survive a zombie apocalypse then I have spent planning how to survive retirement. Now I attribute part of this to my all-consuming dedication to the horror/zombie literature genre which, to be honest, is a lot more realistic to me than romance books. Like really! There are not that many tall, dark and single billionaires out there just desperate to fall in love. Reanimated dead that crave the

brains of survivors? Totally 100% believable. Survivors with perfect makeup and shiny, perfect hair, you bet (I suspect zombie guts acts as some magical hair conditioner that when rinsed out produce thick, luscious waves that bounce when running away from a pack of undead.) But I digress. Retirement! That fantastical dream of mine of living in a cute little timber frame home in the mountains surrounded by shelf after shelf of books that I will have time to leisurely read as I sip chi tea in front of the fire while my perfectly adorable and miraculously well-behaved grandchildren debate who to be as they play survivor and zombies. (It’s my turn to play Daryl, you got to be Daryl last time – you have to be Negan, you have the baseball bat.) So cute! Anyways – retirement. We have just rolled into a new year, 2018, and with each annual singing of Old Lang Syne, I get closer and closer to that mythical place called – retirement. Now I don’t expect to be a freedom fifty-fiver and can honestly say I’m not sure I’m going to want to retire at 65 but assuming I live to the average age of a female Canadian, I am looking at lasting until 83 or so (again based on the assumption I don’t become a zombie). The question is how am I going to pay for all my books and Reese Peanut Butter Cups for twenty years after retirement? How am I going to support myself and still have funds left over to buy the grandkiddies zombie action figures? According to CARP (not the fish but the Canadian Association of Retired People), Canadian are not saving enough for their retirement and 12 million people don’t have a pension plan with 600,000 people over 65 living in poverty. (http://www.carp. ca/priority/retirement-income-security/). That’s scarier than a swarm of vampires any day!

I know that I need to save money, but how much will be enough? The average CPP is about $640 a month. (The best way to figure out how much CPP you qualify for is to get your CPP statement of contributions. Call Service Canada 1-800-277-9914 and ask for a CPP Statement of Contributions. They will provide you with access to your online statement.) $640 won’t be enough – I have pensions through work but again, it won’t be like winning the lotto. Old Age Security will hopefully still be available when I need it but again, will it be enough? I may be willing to scavenge for food and live on roots and berries and expired cans of spam in a post-apocalyptic world but not for retirement. So, I guess I need some answers and some help. Our office has a stack of literature on budgeting and has had Money Mentors come in and do basic budgeting workshops so that might be a place to start. Money Mentors offer unbiased financial advice, without the pressure of purchasing products like you get at a bank and are an Alberta-based, not-for-profit money counselling agency. I am sure that there are other places as well that can give really great retirement planning advice, MM just happens to be the one I am familiar with so I will start with calling them. (1-888-294-0076) it’s either that or convince my husband to let me track down one of those lonely billionaires looking for love.

I am thrilled to be part of the Newsy Neighbour Family. While I do not have the honour of representing Strathmore residents and those of you in Wheatland County you may contact Independent MLA Derek Fildebrandt. Please connect with his office at 403-934-4400 or Strathmore.Brooks@ assembly.ab.ca.

Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! I would like to start by wishing you a very Happy New Year. I had the privilege of ringing in the New Year with some very dear friends and officiating at my first Wedding ceremony. It was such a beautiful evening and one that I will remember for the rest of my life. When I think of New Year’s resolutions, I often think of the 42 •

same things most of us do…work out more, play more, work less… haha! One of the things I will do and continue into the New Year is make sure that we in the United Conservative Party keep this government accountable and fight the carbon tax every step of the way. I was honoured to have my adoption bill passed with unanimous consent of the house and become law on December 15, 2017. This does not happen very often in opposition, so I was so pleased to see it come to fruition. I would like to thank MLA Nathan Cooper for the inspiration behind this bill, and for his tremendous help and wisdom in carving out policy that will make it easier for Albertan families to complete their families through adoption. The birth parents can look at online profiles and choose forever homes for these precious babies that are a gift to the families considering adoption. As you know Mr. Jason Kenny won a very decisive win in Calgary-Lougheed sending a clear message to the government that they are on their way out. They ran a “fear and smear” campaign but people weren’t buying what they were selling with a parade of Cabinet Ministers, NDP MLAs and even the Premier through the riding. They created a Bill - Bill 24, nicknamed the “Kenny” clause specifically to try and undermine Mr. Kenny’s campaign. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

“Highly Recommended by Local Builders” This did not work, and the government needs to know that Albertans are savvy. We are not a come-and-be-told province. We are resilient, kind, thoughtful and compassionate. No government will ever define those qualities, it is the citizens of this province that have that privilege, and those of us who are public servants get to ride the wave of integrity put forth by the people we represent. As Mr. Kenny said, if we are humble and mature unlike the Government, which prefers hurling insults and intolerance, we will earn the trust of Albertans and have immense privilege of being the Government in 18 months or so. Here’s hoping.

Highest Warranty In The Business

As we head into 2018, the oil prices may go up, we may see the economy start to flicker once again, and hopefully more of us will find jobs and be able to feel our way out of this downturn. The Government’s gift to Albertans for 2018 was a 50% hike in the Carbon Tax which doesn’t help matters. Policy matters, and we have seen policy that has been geared towards ideology and not towards the betterment of the people of Alberta. We hope to see the Kinder-Morgan expansion go through, and we need to stay positive and work together to find the light at the end of this tunnel. I have complete faith in the people of this province. We have seen many a downturn here, and regardless of who was in government, change for the better is driven and demanded by the hard-working people of this Province. When the next election arrives, Strathmore, Cheadle (and virtually all Newsy Neighbour readers!) will be part of the new riding of Chestermere – Strathmore. I plan to seek the nomination as the UCP candidate in the new riding and hope to earn the privilege of representing you again. One January highlight is the Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Awards, celebrating our many great local businesses. Remember, these are your neighbours. They hire locally. Their kids go to school with yours. They give back to the local community and know your name. I will be there and look forward to seeing you. Aleesha, Denise, and the rest of the Newsy Neighbour team put on a great event and I am confident it will be better than ever. Please come out and cheer for your favourite local businesses! As always, we love to hear from you! facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Wine tasting begins with the swishing. The reason why wine tasters swish the wine around in their mouths is to get the taste. Both the front and the back areas of the tongue contain taste buds, although neither one has any distinct sensation in taste. Taste buds can detect food and liquid that is bitter, salty or sweet, without a problem. To get the proper taste from wine however, you need to swish it around in your mouth and allow your taste buds and sense of smell to bring out the unique and fine flavours in the wine. When you have a cold however, the wine can taste very different. When tasting your wine, your sense of smell has a major impact on the taste. What many fail to realize, is that over 75% of our taste is due to our sense of smell. When we have a cold, our sense of smell is affected. Therefore, when eating or tasting wine with a cold, the taste will appear different. Wine tasters all over the world will tell you that tasting wine is more about a sense of smell than the actual taste buds.

Even though many just assume that wine tasting is sipping, swishing, and swallowing - many are amazed to find that it’s actually a bit more. Wine tasting is more of an art, an art that is used to distinguish the taste of fine wines. Wine can be a tasty and refreshing drink - if the bottle was stored correctly and aged properly.

The art of wine tasting is indeed an art. Wine tasters do, however, follow some general guidelines and rules that judge how great a

The Art of Wine Tasting wine is. These techniques can help you bring the most out of your wine, providing you follow them and know how to bring out the taste. The first thing to do with wine is to look. With wine, you can tell quite a bit about it by looking at it. You should always start by pouring the wine into a clear glass, then taking a few minutes to look at the colour. As far as the colour goes, white wines aren’t white, but actually yellow, green, or brown. Red wines on the other hand are normally a pale red or dark brown colour. Red wine gets better with age, while white wines get more stale with age. Next, is the smell of the wine, which you should do in two steps. You should start with a brief smell to get a general idea of the wine, then take a deep, long smell. This deeper smell should allow you take the flavour of the wine in. The more experienced wine tasters prefer to sit back a bit and think about the smell before they actually taste the wine. Last but not least, is to taste the wine. To properly taste the wine, you should first take a sip, swish it around in your mouth, and then swallow. Once you swish the wine around in your mouth, you’ll bring out the rich and bold flavours of the wine. After swallowing, you’ll be able to distinguish the after taste of the wine, and the overall flavour. Once you have looked at the wine, smelled it, and finally tasted it, you’ll be able to evaluate the wine from a taster’s standpoint. This is the easiest way to determine the quality of the wine, and whether or not it has been properly stored and aged. As with all things in life - the more you taste wine - the better you will get at distinguishing the unique flavours.

Use Old Crayons to Make Candles

42A Spruce Park Drive. Strathmore • www.strathmorefloor.com

If you have children in your home, chances are you have an abundance of worn down crayons that don’t get used much anymore. Before throwing them out and buying new ones, consider using them to make candles. This can be a great way to turn them into something new and bright again. Most children will love the idea of creating candles with you and enjoy knowing their old crayons helped create them. Making candles out of crayons can also be a great gift giving idea. Before you get started, discuss safety with your children. Since the crayons will have to be melted at a very high heat, they will not be able to participate in that portion of the candle making process. Assure them that there are many other aspects of the candle making that they can be a part of. To start, gather your supplies. In addition to the crayons, you will need a wax carton. This can be from milk, fabric softener, or orange juice. You will also need paraffin wax, two full ice cube trays, a double boiler, and white packing string. If you don’t want to use your double boiler, an old coffee can and a saucepan will work just as well.

INTERIOR PAINTING Residential & Commercial

Trim the top off of the wax carton, leaving it approximately six inches high. You will want to cut the string at least 8 inches long. You will later cut the wick to fit the holder. To ensure a wick that burns easier, take three pieces and bread them together. Use smaller pieces of string to tie the ends together. The holders for your candles can be anything you desire as long as they are non-flammable. Pretty vases, glasses, and jars work nicely.

The melting process will take about fifteen to twenty minutes. While the wax is melting, peel the papers off of the old crayons. You and your children can choose to separate the colours by lights and darks to have a mix that melds well or you can mix it all together and see what the colour ends up being. For best results, only add the crayons to the wax after it has completely melted. After the crayons and wax have both melted together, immediately remove the mixture from the stove and pour into your candle holders. If you would like to make scented candles, try adding a splash of cinnamon or vanilla to your hot wax mixture. It is important that the candles be left alone to completely

harden. Make sure you have an area this can be done without disruption. It is also important to make sure small children can’t reach them, as out of curiosity they may want to check on their candles. The wax will stay hot for several hours and can scald the skin. Making candles out of old crayons is a great way to spend the afternoon creating a neat project with your children. This process can also be done at schools and childcare centers with old crayons as presents for parents. Simply allow each child to decorate the outside of their candle holder while adults complete the rest of the process. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

YYC East (Chestermere, Langdon, Strathmore & Area) is our home. I grew up here, we live here, raise our families here, and focus our real estate services here since 1999. It was a challenging year overall with job losses and small businesses closing their doors, with tougher mortgage regulations and new complicated slow closing practices. But we are tough and we persevere. We educate ourselves and make things right for our clients. Chestermere, like a lot of small communities in Alberta, has suffered this year with job losses and financial difficulties; some small businesses being forced to close their doors, but I love how resilient we are. We push back and make ourselves/lives better – no one will keep us down. A few new businesses opened their doors. The community really came together and volunteered their time for really well attended events and festivals. A new mayor and completely new council came on like a breath of fresh air. Everyone is optimistic and driven for change and really, that's all it takes. A community passionate and determined to improve

everything will meet all goals. Residential real estate was tough this year for many. 2017 ended with 292 sales (excluding condos), the median sale price was $508,750.00 selling on average in 62 days, and sellers got 97.3% of their asking price. 2016 had 296 properties sell (excluding condos), the median sale price was $479,850.00, selling on average in 65 days, and sellers received 96.8% of their asking price. Langdon has seen a lot of change in 2017, from the shift in a new high school becoming priority to a new passionate councilor, Al Schule, amazing attendance at Langdon Days and other community events, and the new Firehouse Bar & Grill for locals to enjoy. Langdon has really come together this year and will be a force to recon with when it comes to choosing a place to call home in 2018. Residential real estate saw a total of 80 properties (excluding condos) sell in 2017 with a median sale price of $508,812.00 and sold on average in 66 days with sellers receiving 98% of their list price. 2016 saw 96 properties (not including condos) sell at a median sale price of $457,500 on average in 50 days and sellers received 97.6% of their asking price. Strathmore experienced a very productive year. Some of my favourites are the downtown remodel of 2nd Avenue, the new pavilion for farmers markets at Kinsman Park, the start of the remodel of the pool, the start of a new elementary school in Edgefield (due to open late 2018), the start of new soccer and ball diamonds in Hillview, the updated library, FCSS’s new bigger location downtown on 3rd Ave, the start of the old co-op downtown being remodeled into a mall, our new mayor Pat File and new council members along with a few returning, The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

plus a few new stores and restaurants. Strathmore is looking well rounded and has lots to offer its residents in 2018. 2017 Residential real estate saw a total of 253 properties (not including condos) sell in 2017 with a median sale price of $339,187.00, sold on average in 57 days and sellers received $97.1% of their asking price. 2016 saw 233 properties sell (excluding condos), the median sale price was $325,000.00, and sold in 62 days on average, with sellers receiving 97.3% of their asking price. It was overall a tough market for sellers. We saw the higher end homes come down in price in 2017, which appears to show as higher median sale prices in the stats. It’s so important to put your best foot forward when selling your residential real estate right now and so important to price competitively. Know that the top end of these markets are not moving quickly right now and its super important you have driven passionate representation that has the budget and the experience and marketing knowledge to guide you. Teach practical values to your children by modeling those values. Admit when you have made a mistake and apologize. Model being committed to the ideals you embrace. We are our children's first heroes; the ideals that we live today are the ideals that will influence our children throughout life.

Powerful Ways to Show Love to Children

3. Listen to Your Children.

Our children are our most important legacy to the world. However, our love is our most important legacy to our children. Here are seven ways to show love that will help children build sturdy foundations for the future. 1. Spend Time with Your Children. Time is the most loving gift we can give to our children. It allows for the mutual exchange of ideas, emotions, actions, and words that help our children develop and learn to communicate. Enjoy a toddler's tea parties as well as a teen's ball games. Help your children build things and create art. Begin new family traditions that you can enjoy together each year. Ample time spent in

A child's message is one of his or her most essential gifts. We build self-esteem in children when we show interest in what they have to say. Children need to communicate their pride of accomplishment as well as their needs. Get down at eye level with very young children and listen with your eyes, ears, and heart. Listen most of all to the feelings conveyed through a child's eyes and expressions. If you listen to your children deeply, they will grow up listening deeply to you. 4. Provide Your Children with Loving Discipline. Children need guidelines and safe boundaries without being constrained unnecessarily. They need to learn the value of being accountable for their choices and actions. Let your children know that you disapprove of hurtful actions but will always love them as sons and daughters. Loving discipline enables them to recognize the best in other people. It allows children the freedom to explore the world safely and reach their highest potential. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

6. Share Your Experiences with Your Children. We each have valuable stories to tell, unique maps of our journey through life. These stories tell how our reactions to events created the life we are living now. Sharing the benefit of your experiences — the roadblocks and rewards — is a very loving way to guide your children. Your children may face many of the situations you faced. Your experiences can help them make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary mistakes. Among the most worthwhile possessions that we can someday leave for our children are journals filled with the stories that shaped our lives. 7. Love and Support Your Children Unconditionally. Love is an unconditional gift from the heart; it is not a reward for good behaviour. Let your children know that you will love and support them in any situation. This message creates a sturdy bond of trust. Your children will grow to feel safe in coming to you with any problem they face.
