How much money was raised?

The Newsy Neighbour raised $800 for School Fuel by selling spots to vendors at the Festival. We had people vote online over the last 2 months for the charity they wanted to see get the money. It was neck in neck between The Happy Cat Sanctuary and School Fuel for most of the voting but School Fuel ultimately won. Congratulations! $700 was raised by BDS Properties and CIR Realty for Step One Housing by selling hot dogs, burgers and a beverage for $4. Step One Housing provides housing for those at risk of becoming homeless. They help with damage deposits, rent and utilities. The BBQ was donated free of charge by ATCO gas – thank you!

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. ~Confucius

$436 was raised for Stephen Greene with the dunk tank. Stephen is 23 years old and was born with spina bifida. Stephen is now in a power wheelchair, which limits how easily he gets around. He has dreams of going to school and getting a part time job – having a wheelchair accessible vehicle will help his quality of life. The dunk tank raised money to go toward this van.

Where do we start... Between Aleesha, Kathryn & Denise we have birthed 7 children. And even 27 hours of labour is nothing in comparison to the amount of work we put into the 2nd Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival over the last 6 months. Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration. haha. But really, 6 months of work and its all over in one day... The Newsy Neighbour’s 2nd Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour festival was an even bigger success than it was last year! We hoped people would come out – and we were blown away by the attendance. We project double the amount of people from last year, and the response from attendees and vendors has been overwhelmingly positive. The streets were packed with people of all ages. From bouncy castles, face painters, a dunk tank, the infamous Box City, a DJ, BBQ’s galore, a shredding service, balloons, food trucks, self-defence class, yoga in the street, a community mandala, a bake sale, business sales, artists, fitness demonstrations, giveaways, a men’s high heel race, karaoke, a garage sale, popcorn, giant bubbles, mascots and to vendors galore. And don’t forget the beer gardens and the CONCERT. We were so honoured to have such amazing musical entertainment this year! Two Shine County, Wildflower, Blu-Stone Band, Samm Smith and Jaydee Bixby. What incredible talent on that stage. We want to give another huge thank you to New Space Construction for sponsoring the concert so everyone could enjoy it free of charge. And how about that Samm Smith? She is 15, Aleesha said she is one of the most beautiful souls she has ever met. Incredibly talented and just so full of passion. She had the audience in "awe"through her entire performance. Samm Smith, was one of the 200 hopefuls and the ONLY Canadian invited to the final round of auditions for season 10 of NBC's hit series The Voice. Good Luck Samm. Denise hit 10,000 steps on her fit-bit by 11am and all the running around we did was so worth it – everything went off amazingly. The sun was shining, people came in droves, everyone was fed and everyone had fun! The entire purpose of the festival is to showcase local Strathmore businesses, namely downtown businesses. We heard many people utter the words, “I didn’t even know this business was here!” We love that we are helping our residents learn what amazing businesses are available right here in town!

$447 was raised for the Strathmore Overnight Shelter and $585 was raised for the Harvest Healing Centre. The necklace that was raffled off by the Shelter and donated by the Strathmore Jewellery Boutique was won by Val Turgeon – congratulations! The grand total of money raised at the festival was $2968. This is fantastic and the goal is to triple it next year! We have some amazing ideas in place.

What happened with the Shopping Challenge? In order to enter to win one of our 3 HUGE baskets, you had to spend $10 in 11/22 downtown Strathmore stores in the Shopping Challenge that has been printed in our magazine for the past 5 issues. We had 47 entries for the Shopping Challenge this year, which is WAY more than last year!! 47 people spent the money locally just to participate and support. We are SO happy about this and extremely excited about the growth. We promise to continue to make this bigger and better each year. Gift Basket 1 valued at over $2500 was won by The Beddies Gift Basket 2 Valued at over $1200 was won by Telisa Tebbutt Gift Basket 3, Valued at over $1000 was won by Kyla Anderson-Janes Congratulations to the winners and a special thank you for taking the time to support your local businesses that take part in this fantastic challenge.

Who do we need to thank for helping us put on this incredible event? There are so many people, and we really hope we don’t forget anyone. First of all, this event would not have happened without all the hard work and incredible support and sponsorship from the Town of Strathmore. Special thanks to Tracy Simpson and Kendra Armstrong. Seriously, we couldn’t have done any of this without you guys. THANK YOU! Next, there would have been no porta-potties and hand washing stations without Huxted Waste & Recycle. Huxted, you are such an incredible asset to this community. Thank you, Thank you! New Space Construction not only completely sponsored the conThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

All the volunteers that came and worked their butts off that day helping: Brett Presley, Brodie Presley, Todd Gosling, Kathryn Hartwell, Tifannie Hartwell, Ron Presley, Lisa Grimes, Amy Neufeld, James Stanley, Dave Brooks, Thompson Greg , Logan Cruption & David Reesor, a huge thank you!

To sum it all up, we are absolutely over the moon happy with the response we got to this festival! We are so honoured that so many people joined us in this event. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Sharing Within A Marriage...

Life is amazing. And then it's awful. And then it's amazing again. And in between the amazing and the awful its ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That's just living, heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life. And it's breathtakingly beautiful! ~LR Knost

An elderly couple walked into a fast-food restaurant. The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries and an ice cold Pepsi. He unwrapped the plain burger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the Pepsi, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, people around them were looking over and whispering.

ADVANCED TICKETS $20

Obviously, they were thinking, "That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them."

TICKETS AT DOOR $25

As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine - they were used to sharing everything. People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and they occasionally took turns sipping the Pepsi. Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time, the old woman said, "Thank you very much, young man, but we are used to sharing everything."

Pets are just like a family member for most of us. We fall in love with them, they love us back with no questions asked, we care for them, and they protect us.

There is an understanding between a pet and owner that needs no explanation, so we try to look after them as best we can. Here are some natural ways we can help our beloved pets heal. With crystals, Himalayan salts and just with the love of a touch (massage). Remember do not leave crystal where a pet can swallow them! All information that is offered here is intended for educational purposes only. It is not provided in order to diagnose, prescribe or treat any disease, illness or injured condition of the body or pet and the author, publisher, and contributors accept no responsibility for such use. Anyone suffering from any disease, illness or injury should consult with their physician or veterinarian. Clear Quartz will help with the pet’s immune systems. It also helps heighten the communication between owners and pet while training. This also works well for bird lovers! Rose Quartz is good for injuries, wounds, and helps reduce stress. The Rose Quartz energy helps pets that have been rescued, are injured or are sick so they can be introduced into a new home to accept love and companionship without fear. Smokey Quartz energy is good for nervous system and swelling. Its energy also helps with the grounding and clearing of negative energies in the household and can help two or more pets to get along with each other without hostility towards each other. Himalayan Crystal Salt helps your pet with the need of salt for a healthy and happy body. With 84 minerals and trace elements, it benefits the overall growth and health of all pets and animals when used as a salt lick. When actually licking the crystallized salt, the animals heal much faster from any wounds or injury. Himalayan Salt lamps help with the removal of negative energy and replacing it with natural healing energy that helps balance and clear the pet’s energy, making the pet healthier and happier. Why not just spend time giving your pet a gentle massage? Just like us, your pets love to be touched. Massage for pets have many benefits that include healthier immune system, better circulation, better digestive system, better skin, and just a happier, healthier pet! It is very simple to do; just rub with the tips of your fingers along the pet’s legs, going up to the heart and massaging with soft and gentle touch. Make sure you do all legs and tail, too. It is just like when a pet is being groomed and you know how much they like that. So try some of these natural and sample healing tools for your pet today, they will love you for it! First Time Pets Children Can Care For By Robin Lawson

Betta Fish

Caring for a pet teaches compassion, responsibility, and empathy. When a child has their own pet that depends on them for its needs, they are able to learn skills essential to growth and emotional maturity. However, high-maintenance pets such as dogs and cats are too much for a child to handle alone, as they require training, guidance, exercise, veterinary checkups, transportation, and other tasks that ultimately fall to the parents. Thankfully, there are a number of animals that make amazing pets for kids. Children are perfectly capable of assuming the responsibilities for the care of these beginner pets.

The stunning, flowing fins of a betta fish are a joy to watch. These brightly coloured fish are the simplest aquatic pet to care for. They can be fed a diet of fish pellets and live in tanks sized five gallons and over. Kids can practice animal care by providing food and cleaning the aquarium before owning pets with greater needs. Though fish can't be handled, the sight of graceful fins as the betta darts, drifts, and turns is fascinating to witness.

Hamster Few things exist that are cuter than a round, nibbling hamster. Pocket-sized and beady-eyed, hamsters are happiest burrowing in bedding and shelters, munching on rodent chow, and running in exercise wheels. Because of their small size and tendency to skitter, hamsters must be handled with care. Kids learn delicacy from gently holding their hamster and caring for it. Nothing will melt the heart quite like the puffy cheeks and twitching pink nose of a fluffy hamster.

Rat Though images of green slime and dark sewers might come to mind, pet rats are far from dirty creatures. These curious and friendly rodents can be kept in a number of cage types with bedding, newspaper, and a place to burrow and curl up. They eat pellets and rodent chow available at any pet store and can also be fed treats such as apples and peanuts. Their cages are easy to clean as they tend to pick a corner to do their business. Rats have no problem being handled and may even enjoy curling up near the warmth of someone's neck or crawling up a sleeve. With a pet rat, kids may find their new friend likes to hitch a ride on adventures around the house.

Nature's chillest rodent, the guinea pig is a social creature that thrives on attention. They're affectionate and cuddly, making them perfect for kids who want a pet they can interact with. Though they're tough critters, they need guinea pig food, a water bowl, a large cage, bedding, hay, chew toys, and a hidey hole to live happily. In addition to caring for them, children can feed them treats to further deepen their bond. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

PETS is Not e s u o H A a Home ! A Pet t u o h t i W

Be it human or animal, touch is a life-giving thing. Has anyone ever had a stroke or a heart attack while cozied up with a pet? I doubt it. ~Robert Brault

Leopard Gecko Every kid on the block would be jealous of someone owning one of these neat little spotted lizards. Hardy for reptiles, leopard geckos live up to twenty years and have excellent survivability. Their bulbous tails store enough fat to sustain them for a whole month in the rocky areas of the desert -- though it's bad for their health to go without eating for so long. Their diet consists of live crickets and meal worms, which are inexpensive and relatively easy to keep, so long as no one's squeamish. They can be housed in a 10 to 20-gallon terrarium. Since leopard geckos are nocturnal, they're active at night and simply need a day lamp under the tank heater to keep warm. Unlike other geckos, leos have claws instead of adhesive pads and can't scale glass. That doesn't mean they don't like to climb, however, and are happiest with prop rocks and structures to crawl over and hide in. Decking out the ultimate terrarium can give kids a fun and creative project. After initial setup and instruction, kids can take over caring for a leopard gecko on their own. Most of these lizards are calm and tamable, making them perfect for handling, though they don't need social interaction to thrive.

sure every pet is getting the love and care it needs. Daily tasks of supplying food and water and cleaning cages teach discipline, and the emotional connection between pet and owner supports children as they develop and learn more about the world and its inhabitants. Owning a pet is a big responsibility that shows children both the importance of hard work and the joy of bonding with an animal companion.

Rabid Rabies If you haven’t seen the movie “Cujo” it is likely you have heard of it. It is the story of a dog that contracts the rabies virus from a bat bite and attacks and terrorizes a woman and her son after killing 2 other people. Chillingly terrifying! This fictional Stephen King story comes home to Alberta as a rabies infected bat bit a person in Airdrie around June 14, 2016. A glaring reminder of the importance of vaccinating our dogs and cats against rabies. Rabies is a very old disease dating back centuries. Only mammals are susceptible to infection and with that mostly wildlife, skunks, raccoons, coyotes, bats and foxes. However, it is a concern when humans and our companions come into contact with them. The virus is detected in saliva and transmitted during a bite. Once

The good news in all this is that rabies is a virus that we can vaccinate for and prevent!

Puppies and kittens can get their first vaccines at 16 weeks of age. They then need a booster at one year and at that point can be given a 3 year vaccine. Having a 3 year vaccine makes those annual exams easy and so much more pleasant as your pet doesn’t get a needle when they come for their health exam. Annual health exams allow your veterinary team the ability watch for declining health or changes over a period of time that may need further diagnostics.

ALL SIZES WELCOME!

25 Years Experience

During the incubation period, the virus attaches itself to the local muscle cells; after a few days, it moves into the nerves where it then starts its journey into the brain. This process can take upwards of one year; it is when it reaches the brain that an animal becomes symptomatic. The start of symptoms is when a personality change is noted, often animals become reclusive and there can be a voice change. The next phase of symptoms is usually referred to as “mad dog”. This is the excitative phase where the animal will have hallucinations and often has no fear, attacking people, animals and, if confined, the bars of its cage. Finally, in the dumb stage, weakness and paralysis start and this is where the foaming at the mouth is exhibited and, shortly thereafter, death.

In May of this year, there have been 38 rabies cases in Canada, making it clear that vaccination is still necessary to protect our beloved animals from this vicious disease.

Hurray! Summer is finally here! Sunshine and long hot days are upon us. But what about your best friend? How do you keep them cool and comfortable in the heat?

Keeping Your Dog Comfortable in the Summer ECO FABRICARE SPECIALISTS DRYCLEANING ON SITE! Coin Laundry Quick turnaround!

The most important thing to remember is to have clean, fresh, cool water available 24/7. There has been some information regarding the health risks of giving dogs ice or ice water but that has been debunked by current veterinary information.

A True Community Based Local Family Business!

If your dog is an outside dog or spends the better part of the day outside, please ensure that they have shade to escape from the hot sun. A shelter in the shade is even better, as it provides a way to escape a heavy rainstorm, thunderstorm and, of course, hail. A small kid's hard plastic pool is a great idea for them to lay in and cool off. And most importantly, never leave your dog unattended in a vehicle. Many dogs perish every year from being left in a car. Even with the windows open, the interior of the car can heat up very fast, inducing an oven-like environment with no escape. If you see signs of heat stroke in your pet, get them to the vet immediately. Enroute, cover the dog with cold wet towels to try to reduce body temperature. According to Dr. Lila Miller, "symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. They can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees."

Grooming tips for hot weather: How does grooming and coat care factor into keeping your pets comfortable in the summer heat? First off, I would like to mention nail care. The weather is great and we are out with our pets more than ever, so a good nail trim and shaping will help with your dog’s ability to walk, run and hike with you without breaking or splitting a nail. Dogs that usually get their hair cut all year long might like to get a slightly shorter cut for easy maintenance through the summer months. Too short is not good, as dogs are also prone to sunburn and bug bites or stings. And finally, double coated dogs! It is not necessary or recommended to shave down double coated dogs and may even harm their coat. Shelties, collies, shepherd types and other medium to long haired breeds do not need to be shaved off. A good bath and brush to remove dead hair and mats is the best way to keep these guys comfortable. Dogs pant to get rid of excess body heat, they do not sweat as we do. Taking off the hair does nothing to keep them cool, but having that hair there to protect their skin from the sun, bugs and burrs is of greater benefit! Have a great summer and have fun with your furry friends! Lori Iverson BARKS N BUBBLES PET SPA (See ad on page 18)

Everyone is Fighting a Battle You Know Nothing About... By Nicole MH

Inspirational is inspirational - there is no right or wrong way to inspire; however, there are some who have the capacity to change your entire outlook on life by doing nothing other than being themselves.

Brandon Harrison is one of those “incidental inspirers” whom, from a very early age, has been fighting for a life that so many of us take for granted; a life of “normalcy”. At age three, Brandon was diagnosed with neuroblastoma - a common and oftentimes fatal childhood cancer that is typically found and diagnosed in patients under five years of age. Although family and friends stayed positive and professionals worked diligently to secure his health, doctors were only able to give Brandon a 25% chance of survival. After tireless years of check-ups and an overly intrusive 14hour operation, Brandon was finally given a clean bill of health at five years old. Now ordinarily, what a 5 year old accomplishes in their short time here on earth would be worthy of a refrigerator magnet and a big “good job” hug but how do you congratulate someone so little on fighting earnestly to save their own lives? That thought in and of itself is mind boggling. At just five years old, this little boy had fought and won - against one of the most fatal diseases of our time. Over the next decade, Brandon spent his days like most every other child - playing, wrestling around with his two brothers and attending school. At age 15, however, his life was changed and it changed literally overnight. As he was getting ready one morning for yet another ordinary day in the classroom, Brandon suddenly lost consciousness - and when he came-to, he realized that he had just lost a large portion of his vision. Being the tenacious little trekker that he was, he carried on like normal and headed to school. When he arrived back home that afternoon he called his mother to tell her what had happened; it was shortly after that phone call that he learned he had had a stroke. After months of struggle and Gamma Knife Radiation Therapy (used to shrink the AVM that had caused his stroke), Brandon’s life seemed back on track; it was only a brief reprieve from the medical chaos, however, because shortly thereafter it happened again. He, Brandon Harrison, had suffered yet another stroke at the young age of 17. This time, Brandon woke up with a fierceness - a “you can’t beat me,” mentality like he never had before. And so, in an effort to prove to himself and the world around him that disease was no match for him, he decided to tour across country to raise awareness for the Heart & Stroke and Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundations - on his longboard. “You can play the why me? card, or you can spin it, find the positive and use it to your advantage,” he told me when I asked him what inspired him to do such an amazing thing. “I fought a battle and won and to me, this was like redemption for all of those who never got ‘tomorrow’…” Brandon’s father Michael Floyd, a 40-something financial and insurance advisor who had never set foot on a longboard before, decided, without hesitation, that he was going along too. Within a

year, Michael had purchased a board, learned to skate, recruited some sponsors and jetted off with his son to begin their country-wide excursion. The duo started in St. John's, Newfoundland with no concrete plan, accommodations or tour guide. Just two guys, their backpacks, their longboards and a mission to make a difference. When I asked Brandon what the hardest part of this trip was, he told me that he can’t stand the rain; like genuinely can’t handle being wet and cold - but of the first 21 days on their trip, it poured for 18. I couldn’t help but chuckle a little when he said that (probably more the way he said it, I guess) but I mean, what are the odds that this life-altering journey would kick off with such a dreary start? Think that stopped them though? Not a chance. This father-son dyad kept at it, skating an average of 60km a day; staying with old friends, friends of friends and the new friends they met along the way. “It was amazing, actually,” says Brandon. “We were down at Middle Cove Beach and we were talking to this group of guys about places we could stay for the night. They told us that they knew a place and that they would come back to get us to show us where it was. A couple of hours later, here they are with beers and steaks telling us that we were staying with them and it was BBQ time. It was such a cool experience.” On another occasion, the pair was in a small little shop when some locals overheard their story. “They invited us to stay at their place that night,” Brandon told me, “and they even cooked us a big, delicious breakfast in the morning before we headed back out on the road.” Brandon and his father were touring the provinces and inspiring change the entire way. After 5400 km, some sheer exhaustion (I would imagine) and experiences that not too many of us have had the pleasure of, they finally reached Lake Louise, Alberta; they hopped into a car and headed east to Red Deer, where the Heart & Stroke Foundation was holding their second annual longboarding fundraiser. It was a cold, rainy, stormy day (and we know how much Brandon loves those) with people gathered from all around to show their support and it was that day, September 7, 2014, at that event, with only 1200km to finish his cross-country trip, that Brandon had his third massive stroke. Brandon spent the n e x t The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

105 days in the hospital - many of which were in a coma - fighting for his life and his right to finish what he had started. Forgive me for searching for symbolisms here, but it was on the morning of his 20th birthday that Brandon awoke from his coma and do you know what he said one of his first thoughts was? “The second I opened my eyes I remembered all of those people who never made it… and that I needed to stay focused on the journey. I am going to finish this trip, or I am going to die trying.” After 10 long months of doctors, therapists and treacherous rehabilitation, the now 22 year old has once again set his sights on the finish line. This July, Brandon is hoping to be back up on his longboard, skating to the west coast in the name of survival - and there is not one fibre in my body that doubts he will accomplish it. “This time, I won’t be going with my father though,” Brandon tells me. “Earlier on in our trip, we decided that regardless of what happens to the other one - the one who is able to will complete the trek in honour of the other, for better or for worse. While I was in the ICU my dad stayed true to our pact and finished the last 1100 km without me - so now, I have a personal battle of redemption. I am going to do it on my own.” Truthfully, when I began this story I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn’t know Brandon, or his story or what he done in this life - all I knew was that he had a discourse and we wanted to tell it. Now I could say that he is a hero for the battles that he has fought (and conquered) or for the awareness tour he did across Canada and I would be justified; however, those are not the things that impressed me most. What impresses me most is that not once - not even once - did this 22 year old complain in the entire time I talked with him. He was humble, ambitious, and funny; he was kind and he talked about those who weren’t blessed enough as him to get a second chance. He didn’t tell me what a trial his life had been, or how his days were mostly consumed by doctors’ visits and rehab sessions (although he could have and I would not have been the least setback by it) - but he told me without so many words, that life is what we make it and that no matter what the world throws at you, you need to stand strong and thrive and just be grateful for another day.

Get to Know Your Neighbours and Have Some FUN!

Summer is right around the corner, and what better way to kick it off than by hosting a neighbourhood block party! Booking and planning a block party is easier than ever through the City of Chestermere’s Community Services department.

1”

“The block party program has become more popular year after year, and allows residents in the community to become more connected and get to know their neighbours in an inexpensive way,” said Beth-Anna Van Dellen, the City of Chestermere’s Community Outreach Worker. The block party program has been offered by Community Services for several years. In 2015 over 2,000 residents attended a block party in their neighbourhood. This is an amazing program which builds a sense of connection and community within the City, as neighbours get to know and care for one another. In urban areas, this can do a great deal in reducing isolation, reliance on social services, and even crime.

The toolkit is easily accessible for download online. Residents will also be given other planning tools such as everything you need to plan, invite and hold the party including an invitation template, kids’ games, disposable cups and plates, and much more. Generous sponsors such as M&M Meat Shops, Lake Ridge Community Church and No Frills have partnered with the block party program this year and will offer gift certificates to residents. Hello Newsy Neighbours!

We have had a very interesting and event-filled month at the legislature and here in the Constituency. I would like to take a minute to thank all the volunteers and donors that worked so hard to bring the Fort McMurray fundraiser to fruition last month. We raised over $25,000 and matched by provincial and federal donations, that is $75,000 plus. I would especially like to thank Aleesha and Denise of the Newsy Neighbour for their efforts in the Chestermere-Rocky View fundraiser. You are both so inspirational and we here at the MLA’s office are so impressed by your community spirit. You report on and promote local business here in Chestermere – Rocky View and in the neighbouring constituency of Strathmore – Brooks. If there is a community event, the Newsy Neighbour is not only there but actively putting their money and volunteer time behind it. Thank you for what you do. On June 18 I had the great pleasure of attending the Langdon Past, Present, and Future event at the park beside the Field House. Martin Shields, our Member of Parliament, and Rocky View councilor Rolly Ashdown also attended. Ably emceed by Coralee McIntosh of Synergy and presented by the Langdon Community Collaborative, it featured a great pancake breakfast, the opening of the 1983 Time Capsule, the dedication of the Community Garden, and the presentation of awards for Volunteer Of The Year. Longtime resident Charlie Bates opened the Time Capsule and his wife Joan spoke eloquently about Langdon’s rich history. It is remarkable how many of the names in the time capsule or their descendants are still contributing to Langdon. I have a date with Alfred and Eugenia Brander to learn more about Langdon’s past. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Colette Curkan, the Community Garden is finally a reality. Accessible to all, the garden has several “food bank” plots for our neighbours who are experiencing hard times. Colette made a point of thanking Rolly Ashdown for his help in cutting the red tape. This garden is sure to become a showpiece attraction in Langdon. Rolly, Martin, and I had the honour of cutting the ribbon to open the garden. Lisa Baker of the Langdon Community Collaborative introduced the Volunteers of the Year. The adult winner was Chrissy Craig of the Langdon Community Association. Blessed with a new baby, she still finds time to volunteer and is an active force behind Langdon Days. Cat Golden, the youth winner, shows us that Langdon’s future is in good hands. It was quite overwhelming to see the work and care that had been put into this multi-faceted event. Community spirit like this is what makes Langdon a great place to live and raise a family. Check out the pictures on our Facebook page. Langdon Days is just around the corner. We will be marching in the parade, with lots of candy I might add, will have a booth, and will be volunteering throughout. We are on garbage duty, and hopefully we will see you there, even if we are a little bit messier than usual. Langdon is blessed by having an active Community Association and they put in countless hours, making sure this event is bigger and better every year. Please volunteer; it is a cheap way to put a big smile on your face. As always, we love to hear from you.

I Am A... Cucumber

Well, hello there! My name is Chellahumari (which, as I’m sure you know means “Precious Girl” in Hindi), and I am a cheerful member of the cucumber family; one that includes such relatives as the watermelon, and various kinds of squash. Although people usually think of us as vegetables, we’re actually a fruit! A creeping vine, we’re very happy to spread over the ground or climb up anything that’s handy. We have large leaves that form a protective canopy over our roughly cylindrical fruit.

History

1”

We originated in India a very, very long time ago. People began to cultivate us at least 3,000 years ago, as we spread west into ancient Ur, Thrace (present day Turkey and Bulgaria, where we remain wildly popular), Greece, Rome, and later, east to China. The ever-clever Romans were particularly fond of cucumbers. Pliny the Elder reported that the Emperor Tiberius had us on his table every day of the year. As Pliny put it, “Indeed, he was never without it; for he had raised beds made in frames on wheels, by means for which his cucumbers were moved and exposed to the full heat of the sun; while, in winter, they were withdrawn, and placed under the protection of frames glazed with mirrorstone.” Reportedly, we were also cultivated in cucumber houses glazed with oiled cloth known as specularia. In addition to enjoying us with their meals, the Romans used us to treat everything from scorpion bites to poor eyesight. Women desiring children wore us tied around their waists. We were also carried by midwives, then cast away, alas, when a child was born. Centuries later, the emperor Charlemagne grew cucumbers in his gardens in 9th century France. We were introduced to England in the 14th century, disappeared there, and then reappeared 250 years later. Columbus brought us to Haiti in 1494, and, mysteriously, the famous explorer Jacques Cartier found “very great cucumbers” growing on the site of what is now downtown Montreal in 1535. There are many varieties of cucumber grown and enjoyed around the world. The ones most familiar to North Americans include Slicing, Picking, and English. You almost certainly know all three of these. But have you ever tried a Lebanese or East Asian cuke? Or what about New Zealand’s Apple or India’s Dosakai cucumber, both yellow and round, the former enjoyed raw, skin and all, the latter a staple in Indian curries, daal, and chutneys?

Our combination of B vitamins and carbs can provide you an all-natural pick-me-up that can last for hours. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice on the mirror; it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance. Looking for a fast and easy way to mask cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumber along your problem area for a few minutes – our phytochemicals will cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Some swear it works on wrinkles, too! Had a bit too much fun at the wedding last night? Worried about the inevitable hangover or pounding headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and increase your chances of waking up refreshed and headache-free. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off hunger -- we fill you up without filling you out. And finally, here’s my personal favourite (we do love to dress up). Have an important meeting or job interview and you don’t have enough time to properly polish your shoes? Simply rub a freshly cut cucumber end over your leather pumps – its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great, but also repels water. But enough of all that. Try us out yourself – there are a few nice recipes here to help you explore how best to enjoy us.

1 tbsp (15 mL) finely chopped fresh rosemary 2 tbsp (30 mL) balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp (30 mL) olive oil 1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard 1 English cucumber with peel, washed and thinly sliced Cracked black pepper, to taste In a small saucepan, add the rosemary, vinegar, and olive oil heat over very low heat to blend and intensify the flavours, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in the mustard until well blended. In a serving bowl, add the cucumber slices. Pour the dressing over the cucumbers and toss to coat evenly. Add the black pepper to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

CUCUMBER SNACK Spread pumpernickel bread with mayonnaise, top with thin slices of cucumber, and then sprinkle with lemon pepper – so easy and so good. Louise Thomson – Strathmore, Alberta

CHILI-CRUSTED SCALLOPS WITH CUCUMBER SALAD This refreshing salad of cucumbers and roasted cashews compliments the smoky scallops. You can make the salad and scallop skewers up to 8 hours in advance; cover separately and store in the refrigerator until you’re ready to grill.

THE CHRONICLES OF LARRY AND ROGER A Pair of Diabetic Feet

Happy Canada Day! July 1st…What a great celebration of this amazing and beautiful country. We hope everyone played safe and had a TON of FUN! And how about those FIREWORKS? Our human relied on us a lot that day. We did some wandering, standing to watch fireworks, a bit of dancing. A memorable day for this pair of busy fellas. Take a look at our picture; can you tell we have been working out? Yes, we sure have been! That simple commitment made July 1 so much easier for tired feet. We have asked our human to commit to a half hour a day for a walk, at the very least. He has accepted our request and we all feel so much better for it. Some days it is not easy; he has a hard time finding time to fit it into his schedule, or we are sore or lazy and just want to assume our position on the ottoman or coffee table…

Safe4Life Info and Stats June 2016 Did you know you have a good chance of shutting down an attack in 10 seconds or less by screaming and fighting back? Trust your intuition – even if you cannot prove it right, it is NEVER wrong. Talk about strange or disconcerting events or people that you come across – it is likely that others have noticed something strange too. Have conversations and ensure that colleagues and peers are aware of incidents that have occurred in proximity. Don’t dismiss your intuition. An attacker is looking for someone that looks like a victim….keep your head up, make eye contact, look around, and walk with confidence …. An attacker is more likely to avoid you if they see you as aware and in control. As many as 75% of assaults are pre-planned by the assailant, 40% of children will become a victim of some kind of assault by the time they are in grade school. In about 80% of assaults that occur, the offender is known to the victim. Make a Personal Safety Plan – practice and rehearse it in your mind so that it becomes solid and permanent. We are always better prepared to act and react if we have a plan. Think of it in the same way that schools and corporations have fire drills. Only about 6% of sexual assaults are reported to the police. It may be impossible to a prevent sexual assault, much the same way that we may not be able to prevent a car accident. But we can be prepared by practicing the skills to protect ourselves in the event that either one does occur. Don’t text while driving, don’t text while walking through a parking lot. It is important to teach children the proper names of their body parts. There will be no confusion if a child tells an adult that someone touched their penis; that adult will pay attention. If the same child talks about his "teapot", it may go unheard or unnoticed. Establish and be prepared to defend your personal boundaries. Do not force or shame your child into hugging or kissing a relative or family friend – if your child recoils or resists, respect their need for personal boundaries. They are using their intuition to recognize that they are not feeling safe, for whatever reason! The effects of sexual assault are far reaching and can severely impact an individual's emotional stability, employment, and ability to form and maintain adult relationships. Victims cannot just “get over it”

Using Art Turn Memories Into Treasures! by Wanda Reinholdt and Pat Timmermans

We challenge you to get your hands dirty and make something beautiful! At Hope Bridges workshops, we recreate memories using art, and turn memories into treasures. Art is the universal language of expression that anyone can understand. Through art, we humans have the unique capacity to imagine and create – to put thoughts, feelings, and even emotions into works of art. Using the arts, we convey ideas even when it’s impossible to put thoughts into words. One of the most wonderful things about art is that there is no question of right and wrong. The value is in the experience of creating and is unlike any other. Creating allows the left brain to connect with the right and in doing so, helps us to relax and tune in with our other senses to the world around us. As we relax, external stresses fall away, our minds feel more focused, and surprisingly this all overflows to a sense of clarity in navigating a sometimes crazy life! Another of the greatest values in creating art goes beyond simply expressing thoughts, feelings and emotion. Art has the power to help us treasure our most valuable memories. When we create a piece of artwork, we celebrate the meaning, or the impact that a certain someone or something has had in our lives. Art helps us express what we cannot put into words because art doesn’t need words, it only needs to be created.

fort in the art she created to celebrate her companion! In a similar experience to Stacy’s, Belinda also creates works of art in the midst of tragedy. At Hope Bridges Upcycling workshop, Belinda shares her personal journey through grief with the other workshop participants. As she completes a piece, she gives it away as a gift. Her peers have allowed Belinda the freedom to express her pain without fear of judgment. Belinda in turn finds encouragement and using her creativity, gives back to her community of friends. With each piece that Belinda is inspired to make, she finds the strength to take one more step and carry on, not alone but with the support of others. Just as art has helped Stacy and Belinda and many others rise above tragedy, creating from the heart may certainly help you turn a memory into something tangible to treasure. Begin by taking a deep breath, a step of faith, and get to know your inner artist!

Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures. ~Henry Ward Beecher

Stacy and Belinda are two ladies who have both recently experienced the power of art in their personal lives. At Hope Bridges Hand Built Pottery workshop, Stacy felt the support and encouragement of friends as she created a beautiful wall plaque to showcase her precious horse. She worked diligently on the piece to make the likeness to her pet as close as possible. The experience was a happy one for Stacy, and the highlight – taking the plaque home and placing it in the perfect spot on her wall. Sadly, not long after finishing this piece, her beloved horse unexpectedly passed away. The tragic loss will stay with Stacy for her lifetime, but we are certain that she finds com-

Renewing Happiness Written by Carla Lomenda-Segovia of Lomenda Energy Inc.

Have you been in a place of in between? Have you been feeling like you're in limbo? Maybe you're in between being happy and being angry or being sad and being empowered. Do you find sometimes you're jolted out of the happiness that you once had? I know I have felt all of these at times. Most of the time it's a place where we don't exactly want to be because we know deep within there is a better place to be. We know there is an easier way to this thing we enjoy called life. What is the easier way? Where do we find it and who sells that magic pill? There is no magic pill but there is this one thing called TRUST. When you begin to trust your intuition, you can inherently say Yes to Renewal. Our intuition guides us again and again but we don't always listen. We choose to ignore our intuition because it may seem easier at the time. Sometimes we choose consciously and other times subconsciously. We make a choice (to not listen to our intuition, our knowing) because it's easier than standing for what we are really trying to stand in. Renewing happiness doesn't just begin at home and with our families; it begins at the centre within us. At our centre we are connected to all parts of our life: physical environment, financial house, friends & family, spirituality, significant other, personal growth, fun & recreation and career (business). We have to stop and look within. Moments of stillness always exist but they take a moment of stopping to find them. Even sitting in stillness you will witness so much life around and within you. What does it take to clear your mind of distraction? It takes focusing on clarity. Whenever you feel unclear or confused, the more you focus on staying confused, the more you will be confused. When you hear yourself saying, "I don't know", replace that thought with, "what I know is...”

in your business but you aren't taking action to do it? Are you wanting to grow your business but you aren't connecting with those you need to make it all happen? Are you wanting to have a better relationship with your daughter but you don't spend time asking her what she wants? Take note of the yes’s and no’s. 2. Find a way to start eliminating the no's. If you don't know how, someone does. Find someone who has been where you have been and yet has the results you're looking for. Ask a mentor or work with a business/life coach. 3. Find a way to celebrate the yes's. This could be as simple as giving a random stranger a high-5. This celebration is for you so make it about you in any way that feeds your heart's desire. 4. Repeat steps 1-3. Saying Yes to Renewing Happiness means believing your intuition and acting on it. You will find your relationship with you will be strengthened and because of that your relationships around you will be strengthened. Your work-life and home-life with integrate more effortlessly. You will see new ways to create more fun in your life! You will find renewal and new energy within. Happy renewing! Your happiness agent, Carla

Stumbling Through Life IS the Answer By: Becky Stone

I am the first to admit, I am far from perfect. No matter how hard I try, no matter my best intentions, or the best laid plans—I continue to make mistakes in my life. On occasion, I hurt people without intending to. I forget something important. I run out of time or energy and a ball falls from the air. Such is life. Perfection is not something that is part of our natural world. And without doubt, you and I, are subject to the laws of the natural world. There is just not a chance that we shall ever NOT make mistakes as we move through our life. Surely, each of us know this? Is there something to be gained from this reality? Why is it that I am so afraid of failing? My personality is such that when I am in times of stress, I want to be in CONTROL. I want to know how it all will end. I want to know that the people in my life will act in the way I need them to so that I feel like I can control the results. So that I can feel I am in control of my life. The problem with that is that it tends to backfire – by trying to control the outcome, I often end up being the cause of the problematic ending. By telling everyone what I feel they SHOULD do, I place the failing upon their shoulders, rather than accepting my own role in the outcome. By trying to control my life, I miss out on the beauty and possibilities that are here for me to be witness to. And really, what is it that I have control of? My personality doesn't particularly like that answer...

Something magical!

I learn. I make amends. I choose more wisely. I do better next time. I learn from the wisdom and insights of those around me. I shift into a better version of myself. I have the opportunity to grow, to expand, to reveal more of who I am and who I want to become. I become more authentically ME. I am able to move through this life knowing I am not perfect, but knowing that BECAUSE of that, I will be able to do all of this. I believe that because of making mistakes – small, large, inconsequential, or life changing – and learning to accept them wholly, I am blessed to know that I CAN do better, and to WANT to. What if we were to stop thinking about mistakes as something to avoid, and shift into the perspective that our stumbling shall reveal to ourselves the path to a more enlightened world and a better self? We must let go of all that is not helpful – blame, selfpity, shame, anger, all of it – and allow the learning to guide us along our journey in life. I believe all this is best said here by the venerable Yogi Bhajan: “By our stumblings the world will be perfected.” Namaste, Becky

A Mindful Minute

Becky is a yoga instructor and the owner of Pranava Yoga in Strathmore, AB. Pranava yoga is a community minded studio, fostering the growth of the yoga community in Strathmore (and the world) by promoting the values of personal practice, creativity, abundance and community spirit. Now all of us have different personalities. This means that each of us will handle our failings and fears in different ways – some of us will strive to control our situation and the people around us, despite (maybe) knowing we don't actually have that ability. Other personality types may try to avoid messiness entirely, or ignore it, or combat, or blame, or make light of. Speaking for myself, it is my EGO that doesn't like it when I fail. My fear is of embarrassment, shame, hurt. If mistakes are inevitable, so then are the consequences. And consequences hurt. No one likes to be hurt. What if I recognize my ego for what it is – the noise of my personality trying to “protect” me from the uncertainty of life. Because life IS uncertain. The only thing that we, as humans, can be sure of is that we are imperfect. Life is imperfect. How do we use this knowledge to help us in our path in life? What if the mistakes I make, the stumblings along my path, is met without self-blame or self-pity? What if I raise my humbled head and greet my failings with courage and grace, and not fear or blame? What if I let my heart be open and vulnerable and admit my weaknesses? What if I allow others to be exactly who they are and choose their own way, even as it intersects mine? What happens then?

A Look Back in Time… The origins of Langdon Days The Langdon Days event that exists now is derived from fairs of the past. Little bits and pieces have evolved into what we see today. The first agricultural fair was held on the park grounds donated by CP Rail in 1912. This fair was as you would expect: horse racing, a rodeo, a stock show, ball tournaments (comedic and serious), and horseshoe tournaments. For the ladies, there were handcraft exhibits, baking, and preserving competitions. And, for the whole family, there were races with cash prizes. While taking in the festivities, families enjoyed booths operated by the Oddfellow’s Lodge, Church groups, and Women’s Institute, selling goodies like lemonade, hot dogs, ice cream and chocolate bars (amongst other things). The very busy day was brought to a close with an evening dance. When the agricultural fairs ended, school fairs began. The first was in 1925 and the last was held in 1939. These fairs were only for the school children, who would place entries into various competitions. All entries had to be products, stock or poultry, which student raised and looked after on their own (very similar to the 4H competitions of today). Categories included: baking, garden vegetables, stock, chickens, pigs, and grain. In the evenings the schools entered judged competitions of short plays, recitation, songs, and even a yelling contest (to see which school was the loudest). Makes me wonder if we had the same competition today, would Sarah Thompson or Langdon School win? In the early 1930’s, Langdon began hosting an annual Sports Day, which was held in August each year. Like the Agricultural Fairs of earlier days there were races, tug-a-wars, ball and horseshoe tournaments. As in days past, the day ended with a dance. The year was 1955 and in celebration of Alberta’s Golden Jubilee, Langdon saw its first parade. Not much different from the parade we still enjoy today, floats were entered by local merchants, organizations, churches, and school children, along with few individuals. The parade started at the IOOF Hall and ended at the fairgrounds, where Sports Day included a ball tournament between the Langdon Ball Team and the Langdon Spinsters (local men dressed as women). Today not much has really changed, Sports Day has been renamed Langdon Days and is now held in July instead of August. We still enjoy the ball tournament (and like in the past, it’s not always serious), the parade, food vendors, exhibits, children’s activities, and music.

Coconut Piña colada, anyone? The piña colada is a sweet, rum-based cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut, and pineapple juice, either blended or shaken with ice. My favourite ingredient in a piña colada is the coconut – well, unless I’m sitting on a chair on some tropical beach and then that would be my favourite thing. But here at home, on my deck, the coconut is my favourite part. I love coconut and that could be why a piña colada is one of my favourite drinks. And coconut is really good for you too – so I don’t feel so bad about all the calories I’m drinking—they are healthy calories—that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! But really, coconut or coconut oil is good for you; there is no mistaking the wonderful benefits of coconut oil for softening and healing dry and damaged skin and hair. Coconut oil works wonders for burns, cuts, and bruises and speeds the healing while it fights infection. In East Africa, palm kernel oil is considered a health tonic and is the first medicine of choice among the native population regardless of the illness. Traditional healers hold the coconut in such high regard that the coconut palm is commonly given the title "Tree of Life" in the Philippines. Now coconut is fabulous in drinks but coconut oil is also fantastic for lots of other uses: As a Conditioner – apply warm coconut oil to damp hair and keep covered for 15 minutes. Shampoo and enjoy luxurious, shiny hair. For Fatigue – Adding coconut oil to your diet has been reported to increase energy, balance hormones and stimulate the thyroid gland. For Cholesterol – The cholesterol-lowering properties of coconut oil are a direct result of its ability to stimulate thyroid function. For Frying – It can be used to fry foods just like any other oil. For Skin Care – It forms a protective barrier to hold in moisture but also penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin to help keep connective tissues strong and supple. It is readily absorbed into the skin, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and will aid in exfoliating the outer layer of dead skin cells, making the skin smoother. Wow – I’m off to the store to buy some coconut oil! And if you are a do-it-yourselfer, you can easily make an anti-aging moisturizer with ½ tsp.coconut oil and 1 capsule vitamin E. The oil combats inflammation and the vitamin is a potent anti-oxidant. Remove the oil from your fridge (it will be solid) and put it in your palm. Break open the capsule of vitamin E and squeeze the contents into your palm. Rub your hands together until the oil liquefies and blends with the vitamin E. Gently apply it to your face just before you go to bed at night. Do this for a week and you will be astonished at the transformation of your skin. I knew I loved coconut for a reason – it surely is and always will be one of my favourite, fabulous and fantastic things. Kathryn Hartwell References: bodyandsoul.com, prevention.com and shape.com

SUMMER TIME IN LANGDON Rolly Ashdown, Councillor I am in my second term as a Rocky View County Councillor for Division 4 which includes Langdon. email: rashdown@rockyview.ca 403-999-2722 Cell, 403-936-0777 Res

Summertime in Langdon and the South East part of Rocky View County is always interesting.

Just last weekend I had the pleasure of attending two different functions, only a few miles from each other, and celebrating some milestones as well as some great beginnings. The first one was in Langdon. It was an occasion with 3 different focuses: an opening of a time capsule that was placed at the Memorial in the Park 33 years ago, a Grand Opening of the Community Garden and two Volunteer of the Year Award presentations. The second one was in Indus at the Junefest with a breakfast and a grand opening of a playground the community built a few weeks ago. The time capsule was placed in 1983 by a group of residents, many of whom were in attendance. It was interesting to look at some of the materials and compare to what is going on today. Bill Crilly was running for Council back then, his election pamphlet was there and he was there with his wife Sandra. I imagine how they felt going through an election in Rocky View County 33 years ago; Karen and I are where they were 33 years ago! Times were different but I bet the excitement was the same. There was a map of the county, then called the MD of Rocky View. It showed quite a smaller City of Calgary as well, as there was a lot more distance between there and a little town called Airdrie. Lake Chestermere didn’t have many Houses around it at all. There was a copy of the Five Village Weekly, now called the Rocky View Weekly. I had a glance at it; there was an article talking about high water tables and potential flooding. Imagine that! At least the thenewsyneighbour.com

water levels stay consistent. Of course the population was much different, many of the people that live in and around Langdon in 1983 now have streets named after them, one of the things that I always get a kick out of is that when there is a function that involves young and old in our area, many times the people the streets are named after are at the function! That is one of the unique things about Langdon, I doubt there are many communities in the world that celebrate their Heritage while those who were the pioneers get to still take part; surely a unique feature of our fast evolving community. The second focus was the opening of the Langdon Community Garden. I know the effort that went into this project because I watched the tireless volunteers look at three different sites before finally landing on the one in the park that they chose. I also watched them go through all the hoops of creating something that isn’t the norm and I had the pleasure of watching them succeed in getting it to be the wonderful project it has become. I wish them the very best of luck and may their garden grow well. Colette Curkin and the others deserve resounding success for their efforts to date. I hope Mother Nature treats them well. The third item on Saturday was awarding two of the most selfless people in Langdon. Chrissy Craig and Cat Golden were given the first annual Volunteer of the Year Award. You will see Chrissy looking after Langdon Days, in itself a major thing, but to people like Chrissy, it’s just business as usual, maybe a little tougher this year amid having a child and taking on some surgery in her spare time. I know she is looking for some help during the Langdon Days celebration this year if anyone has some spare time on their hands. Cat Golden is the Junior Volunteer of the Year, working with Synergy, a great Youth organization in Chestermere and Langdon. Thank those people if you see them, they are true community builders. My Sunday gave me opportunity to attend Junefest in Indus, some of the old(er) timers know it as a different name I found out at the pancake breakfast but it has been called Junefest for about 8 years now. I had the honour of cutting the ribbon to open the new playground that the volunteers built at the Indus Rec Centre a few weeks ago. It always makes me feel proud and humbled to see all the community-minded people in our area and the contribution they give to the community, what a great place to live! Thank you very much everyone for giving whatever you can to add to our way of life, I know everyone appreciates anything people do to add to the community, thank you again! Paint Night Fund Raiser's

LANGDON GLASS For all your Commercial & Residential needs

ALBERT JAMES

The Newsy Neighbour was VERY happy to sponsor and teach a paint night on April 23rd for the Brooklyn Hamilton Trust Fund. We partnered up with the Langdon Crossing Bar & Grill and Stepping Stones Preschool to put together a SOLD OUT paint night. 50+ people!! We painted, sipped adult beverages, laughed and danced. It sold out so quickly and was so much fun, that we decided to hold a second night, fundraising for the same cause. Over $3500 was raised and donated.

Vehicles FEATURE SECTION

Making the Most of the Car You Drive!

What Should Be Included in Your Annual Maintenance Checkup? By: Be Conrad Whether the car you drive is brand new or a decade old, the right maintenance can help it run longer and more reliably. All vehicles need regular maintenance to run their best and avoid problems, and having your vehicle thoroughly inspected by a qualified mechanic is one of the best ways to avoid breakdowns and dangerous situations. Even if you are required to have your vehicle inspected, that may not be enough to ensure trouble-free operation. Those legally mandated inspections are primarily about safety, and your mechanic may not check things like the condition of the engine oil or the level of coolant in the radiator. That is why it is so important to have the car you drive checked out at least once a year, and not just at the annual inspection. Here are a few critical things that should be checked at least once a year.

• The condition of the engine oil - Hopefully you are checking your oil level at least once a month, but it is also important to look at the oil itself. Dissolved particles in the oil or a burnt smell could be early warning signs of engine damage. 46 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

• The transmission fluid - The colour and smell of the transmission fluid should be checked at least once a year. If the fluid is brown or black, the transmission could be in need of repair. A failing transmission could also cause the transmission fluid to smell burnt. • Wear and tear on the tires - Your mechanic will check the depth of the tire tread during the annual safety inspection, but it is just as important to see how the tires are wearing. All four tires should show even wear - uneven wear could mean you need a front end alignment. • The wiper blades

- It is easy to overlook seemingly simple things like the wiper blades, but these vital pieces of equipment should be inspected at least once a year. Worn wiper blades will not clean your windshield as well as they should, and that could reduce your visibility in ice, snow or rainstorm.

• The aim of the headlights - Over time, the head-

lights can get out of sync and cause problems with nighttime visibility. Your mechanic will make sure your headlights are working during the annual safety inspection, but it is just as important to test their aim and make any necessary adjustments.

• The belts and hoses - The failure of a belt or hose could leave you stranded by the side of the road. Your annual inThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

• The coolant level and condition - You might not give much thought to your antifreeze, but it has a vital role to play. Have your mechanic look at the coolant and assess its condition. The presence of metal flakes or a discoloured appearance could mean problems with your radiator. • The battery age and condition - All batteries have a shelf life, and if yours is approaching its end date, it may be time to buy a new one. Check the sticker on your car battery to see when it was bought and how much life it has left. Your mechanic can also check the state of your battery and let you know if you will soon be needing a new one. Keeping your car in perfect running order is not always easy, but the right preventive maintenance can make a big difference. Having your car checked out on an annual basis is one of the best ways to make sure the vehicle will be there when you need it.

Not All Bikes Are Created Equal

yond the garage for... a while… so some maintenance was in order. And by maintenance I mean put some air in the tires, which is the sum total of my pedal bike maintenance knowledge (but ask me if I can change the oil, adjust my chain or remove a tire on my real bike. Go ahead, ask me! Why yes, since you ask, I can do all those things!!). The tires filled to the appropriate roundness, I was pawing through some garage boxes looking for something resembling a bike helmet and the bag thing that hooks on to the back (I’m told by my eye-rolling friend that the correct term is “pannier”. Whatever. Knowing its name didn’t actually help me find it) when the back tire decided it had had enough and blew up. Loudly. As in “pry me off the garage ceiling” or “go change my pants now” loudly. Apparently old rubber is not as pliable as one would hope or someone was trying to send me a message that bike riding wasn’t a good idea. At that point, hot, sweaty and covered in dust from box pawing while keeping an eye out for grouchy spiders, the heart-attack inducing explosion was enough to convince me of the latter.

In the spirit of getting more active, plus it’s summer and all, I recently decided it was time to evict the spiders that had taken up residence on my bike and put it to use.

Surprisingly, in the world of bikers (pedalists?) an exploding tube is no big deal and apparently not only do they all own spares, they carry said spares with them. And know how to use them. A minor set-back at the least, a head start on the cardio at the worst, per my “friend”.

Anyone who knows me is puzzled when I mention I’m going to start riding my bike more often, assuming I’m referring to the motorized kind, my normal mode of transport about 9 months of the year (in a cooperative weather year, that is). The general consensus is short of replacing the front tire with some kind of snowmobile ski thing, for winter riding, it may not be possible to ride my bike more often. When I clarify by “bike” I mean the pedal variety the responses ranged from disbelief to outright laughter. I may need better friends.

Bike repaired in distressingly short order, as well as guaranteed spider free, we set out for a nice little jaunt. I reminded my friend that it had been a while so for the first ride brevity might be in order, which she assured me she’d kept in mind when figuring out where we’d ride.

But in the spirit of “helping” my ONE good friend, who probably puts 20 or 30 kms a day on her bike, decided to nag me to death… uh… I mean offer to go riding with me any time. As in the weekend, I brought it up, “any time”. I told her I wasn’t ready, needing to give the spider’s proper notice, but maybe the following weekend would work. The bike hadn’t seen pavement be-

It’s at this point I must state that my ex-friend is a liar. Unequivocally. I can also say, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the loop around the Glenmore Reservoir is about 20 km long, is not even vaguely flat and riding it when not in condition (aka haven’t been on a bike for… a while…) will result in serious posterior pain (I’m told seasoned riders develop “callouses”. On the derriere. Sounds pleasant.). I should also point out that one should be deeply suspicious of city-dwelling friends, who ride their bike to work most days, who suggest leaving the nice, flat, bald-headed prairie to go into the BIG city for a ride. Clearly these people do not have your best interests at heart. I wonder if the spiders still want a home? The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

The Future of all Olympic Games in Doubt! Citius, Altius, Fortius! Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger," the once proud Olympic motto. Now when you think of the Olympics, it's "Cheaters, Corruption and Entitlement!" It's sad because I love the Olympics. I loved what they stood for and obviously I would love to see Calgary and Southern Alberta host the 2026 Winter Games. You may remember that I wrote about a possible Calgary Olympic bid on these pages about two years ago. In fact, Calgary did explore a bid for the 2022 Winter Games but the timing was not right. It's no secret that the International Olympic Committee has a terrible track record (the Canadian Olympic Committee has had its share of issues as well) and unless the IOC is willing to make major changes, Calgary or no other city (or country) in their right mind should get into bed with this organization. Change started at the 127th IOC session in Monaco in 2014 as President Thomas Bach introduced Agenda 2020. 40 detailed recommendations to outline what the future of the Olympic movement will look like. Evaluate bid cities by assessing key opportunities and risks. Shape the bidding process as an invitation. Reduce the cost of bidding. Include sustainability in all aspects of the Olympic Games. These are just four of the recommendations that also include increased transparency and strengthen ethics. Talk is cheap! The real question is can a leopard change its spots? Time will tell if this organization can move away from their sense of entitlement in the sports world. Agenda 2020 is the reason Calgary is going ahead with the bid process says Doug Mitchell, chair of the Calgary Sports Tourism Authority. "We wouldn't be doing this if we weren't satisfied the IOC is going to look at existing facilities and coming back to original cities that have held and hosted the Games," says Mitchell. "If they want us to build a new 10,000 seat Olympic Oval for speed skating, we will say no!" Calgary's bid will be sound and fiscally responsible. While there will be a cost associated to upgrade existing faculties, the Calgary bid should only have to include 4 new venues. 1) An athlete’s village that could be used as low cost housing after the Games. This was done in London for the 2012 Summer Olympics. University of Calgary was used as the athlete’s village in 1988.

2) A new hockey arena. This is already being discussed by the City of Calgary and the Calgary Sport and Entertainment group. The Olympic Saddledome was built with funds from the 1988 Games. 3) A new ski jump facility. The current facility at Winsport is obsolete. 4) A new curling venue. Curling was a demonstration sport in 1988 and was held at the Max Bell Arena. As far as our existing facilities are concerned, let's take a look at the options: 1) Nakiska - It was a poor (and costly) choice for a venue in 1988 for Alpine but it is fine for ski cross, boarder cross and some free style events. 2) Lake Louise - The ski resort would have to be included as a venue to host Alpine events. This was an issue in 1988 because it's situated in a National Park. You may have to limit the number of tickets sold to alpine event. 3) Olympic Oval - Still considered the "fastest ice in the world", upgrades would have to be made to seating, timing and technology but still a world class facility for training and major events. 4) Sliding Center at Winsport - The Luge, Skelton and Bobsleigh track is not considered technically challenging, a few modifications could be made to update the facility. 5) Olympic (Scotiabank) Saddledome - It would be decommissioned after the 2026 Games, but would have to stay operational for the Games to host Short Track Speed Skating and some figure skating events. 6) Markin Macphail Center at Winsport - the Olympic size ice surface with a world class Hockey Canada dressing room could be as a secondary ice hockey venue or if needed for curling. 7) Canmore Nordic Center - Still a world class facility for Cross Country Skiing and Biathlon. 8) McMahon Stadium - A major renovation is needed as the city has already talked about a plan B for CalgaryNext. This facility would be used for opening and closing ceremonies. Those critical of the Olympic Games look at the 50 billion price tag for the corrupt 2014 Sochi Olympics under Vladimir Putin. "It was ridiculous and has turned off many potential host counThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

1010 Westridge Road. Strathmore, AB T1P1H8 tries," says John Furlong, the CEO of the very successful 2010 Winter Olympics. "The entire operating budget the Vancouver games was 2.5 billion and I think Calgary could do it for less." There is a misunderstanding that Norwegians wanted no part of the 2022 Olympic Games. Not true! Norway couldn't be more proud of their Winter Sports history. The truth is that Norway wanted no part of the IOC. Only 12% of Norwegians had a favourable opinion of IOC demands and arrogance. The IOC also has a huge doping scandal hanging over their heads. Russian track and field athletes have been banned from competing in Rio this summer. There was wide spread doping allegations surrounding the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. 31 athletes were caught in retests from the Beijing Olympics in 2008. 23 athletes were caught in retests from the 2014 London Olympics. Cheating has been going on forever and do sponsors want to be involved in these types of scandals?

Speed Skating World Champion Ivanie Blondin admits it's embarrassing. "People come up to me all the time saying, oh you're an Olympian, do you use drugs?" Agenda 2020 does address the issues but only time will tell if the cheats get the message. Only time will tell if the IOC really can change.

Save your time on landscaping and spend your time at the lake instead.

As far as Calgary's potential bid for the 2026 Games, at least Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi is on board. "From almost the moment that I was elected mayor, 6 years ago almost, citizens have been coming to me saying it's time. It's time in the sports history of this city for us to bid for another Olympic Games." I agree!

Strathmore Elks Service Club Contributes to Local Communities The Strathmore Elks, Lodge 491 is comprised of 25 local individuals living in the Wheatland and Rocky View County’s. Many of the members live in Strathmore, Chestermere and surrounding communities. During the past year, the Elks have quietly worked at donating their time working casino’s, catering and working other fund raising events, with the proceeds of their labour used to donate money to support local charities and community organizations.

If I had a dollar for every girl that found me unattractive, they'd eventually find me attractive.

Since January 2015, the Strathmore Elks have donated $31,500.00 to local organizations for a wide variety of community activities including purchase of gym equipment for local youth recreational clubs, youth ice skating activities, Mother’s Day Run Breast Cancer sponsorship, the Hope Bridges Society, which fosters inclusion of isolated individuals through art, various community Food Banks and Christmas hamper drives, donations to the Red Cross, a $3,000 donation to the Children’s Hospital neo-natal ward and a donation of $5,000 to the Ft. McMurray Firefighters Fund.

I find it ironic that the colours red, white, and blue stand for freedom, until they're flashing behind you. Today a man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards the local swimming pool, so I gave him a glass of water.

New members are welcome. Contact the Strathmore Elks at membership@strathmoreelks.org or call 403-888-6155 for membership information.

Pets, Cheerleaders and Personal Development By: Darlis Collinge “The only journey is the journey within.” — Rainer Maria Rilke

You don’t have to look far to find a wide variety of personal development books, programs, techniques, websites, podcasts and other tools designed to help people improve their self-awareness, develop their talents and potential, or move along the path of personal fulfillment.

Did you know that over $1 billion dollars is spent on personal development every year and this number is growing at a rate of over 5% a year? People are actively seeking ways to enrich their lives, reach their goals, be happier, have better relationships, improve their businesses, and achieve many other goals. Having been a participant in personal development for over 20 years, I have learned (and benefited from) many, many different types of personal development activities. I have attended training, enjoyed week-long retreats, walked labyrinths, been coached and mentored, read books, spent hundreds of hours in meaningful conversation and done many other activities to attain greater self-awareness for myself and to share with others. And yet, there are teachers all around us that we may not recognize. The first of these is our pets. Many of us have had or currently have pets; in particular, I’m thinking of pets we can hold and interact with like dogs and cats, although there are certainly other pets that are in-home personal development teachers too. So how do pets teach us? Read on for just a few of the ways. Pets teach us about unconditional love. They don’t care what we wear, how much money we make, the colour of our hair, or anything else. They are simply always happy to see us (even those independent cats want to spend time with us, although it may be on ‘their’ terms!). And somehow, they seem to know when we need a little extra loving and support, and they give it to us without asking for anything in return. Pets are perfect examples of receiving and asking for what they want, something many of us have a difficult time doing. What generally happens when you reach down to rub the belly of a dog or cat? They roll onto their back as if to say, “Yup, give me some lovin’ and lots of it.” And when we stop, they nuzzle us or just climb right up on top of us and ask for more. They also are amazing examples of forgiveness. Have you

ever accidentally stepped on a paw or forgotten to put food in their bowl? They do not sulk and snarl and make your life miserable as they hold a grudge and seek ways to have their revenge. Well, I did have a poodle once that if you were mean to her then she would pee in your shoe but I actually found it to be quite funny (maybe because she never peed in MY shoe). Oh and my favourite lesson from our pets is their pure joy of adventure. Have you ever seen a dog with his/her head out the window as the vehicle speeds down the highway? Do you suppose it is hoping that a bug won’t fly in its mouth? Nope, it is just enjoying the experience without worries or wondering ‘what if’ (those are thoughts we humans experience in an effort to play safe). Pets are our teachers and they are our cheerleaders too. As defined by Merriam-Webster, a cheerleader is someone who encourages others to do something… and pets encourage us to be our best. They inspire personal development. US Statistics show that over 70% of the people involved in the personal development industry are women. And while many women have pets, they can also be inspired by other cheerleaders in their life. Cheerleaders who unconditionally accept and support them, who won’t hold a grudge, and who have compassion for their challenges and celebrate their successes. These human cheerleaders are friends, family and they can also be found at Women Talk on the last Thursday of every month in Strathmore. Women are invited to share their stories within this supportive community and as a result, hearts are open to receiving and self-awareness occurs. Regardless of what personal development activities you participate in and whether your cheerleaders are furry four-legged friends or people who want to support and encourage you, always be the best you can be and find the joys in your personal journey. Summer is a great time to cool off in pools, lakes, ponds and beaches, but water can also be dangerous for kids if parents do not take the proper precautions.

An Early Childhood Development Coalition

Kids need constant supervision around water to prevent drowning. Young children are especially at risk because they can drown in less than 2 inches of water, and drowning could happen where you least expect it. Don’t assume that a child that knows how to swim isn’t at risk of drowning. All children need to be closely supervised, no matter what their swimming skills. All infants, toddlers and weak swimmers should have an adult swimmer within arm’s reach to provide “touch supervision”.

Water Safety

1. STAY CLOSE TO YOUR CHILD and always be attentive to what they are doing. Never leave a child unattended while around the pool or other water. 2. TEACH YOUR CHILD WATER SAFETY SKILLS, including staying away from pool drains, spa drains, pipes and any other openings that may entrap them. 3. LEARN HOW TO SWIM and make sure your child is taught how to swim and is comfortable in the water. Swimming lessons are invaluable to a child. 4. CONSIDER HAVING INEXPERIENCED SWIMMERS WEAR A LIFE JACKET EVEN IN A POOL. Do not consider swimming toys to be lifesaving equipment. 5. HAVE APPROPRIATE FENCING AROUND THE POOL to ensure that children do not wander into the pool area unattended. Consider pool alarms to warn of a child unintendedly entering the pool. 6. CONSIDER LEARNING CPR and understand basic life-saving skills so that you can help in an emergency. 7. BE WARY OF UNDER-TOWS AT THE BEACH and do not allow a child to play in water that may pose a danger. 8. ALWAYS JUMP FEET FIRST INTO WATER that is not clear since you do not know what is under the surface of the water

Tips for kids about water safety: ● Always swim with adult supervision. ● Swim with a buddy. ● Don’t run around the pool area; walk slowly. ● Don’t push or jump on others, you could injure someone or yourself. ● Don’t chew gum or eat while you swim - you could choke. ● Toys are fun and help you float, but they cannot save lives. ● If you are just learning to swim, wear a life jacket that fits snuggly and stay in the shallow end.

Canada Day is an important time to get together with family and friends, in order to celebrate all of the Canada’s achievements. We celebrate pride in country, pride in our history. We celebrate the strength of Canadian culture. We celebrate the contributions of Canada’s First Nations. We celebrate the fact that Canadians are the most open and generous people in the world. I think we can celebrate the fact that we welcome with open arms a high number of new Canadians, who immigrate here to make it their home. This is a country built by immigrants, and they helped make it the great place that it is today.

This year, we celebrate our 149th anniversary of Confederation. That was such an important date in Canada’s history as for the first time, the colonies of British North America finally realized that only by uniting as a single entity, could they realize their full potential. We know that we can be proud of Canada’s past. But we can also be very excited for what the future holds. They are a family-run business who specializes in hail and wind damage and works directly with insurance companies. “We’ve grown up in Strathmore so we know the town, the people, and we know the weather,” says Jeff Horsman, owner and main roofer for A-Plus Developments Inc. “We know what products will work with our wind, hail, snow and cold and what products simply don’t.” That’s what you get with A-Plus – a knowledgeable business who treats their customers like family. I can attest; we had A-Plus install some vent covers on our roof because the snow would blow into our attic, melt, and drip through the ceiling. During a high wind storm during the winter, one of the vents blew off, nowhere to be found. A-Plus came (on a -30C day!) and replaced it for us because they “didn’t want to see any more water come through that vent!” “We have a lot of repeat customers,” says Janet Horsman, owner of A-Plus Developments Inc. “We work hard to make our customers happy, so they use us for all the roofs on their farms and they recommend us to their businesses, family, and friends. We have great relationships with many locals!”

Seems to me that the goal of adults, when I was but a child, was to retire at 55 if possible and then if not, 65 at the latest. I think that has changed. It is not uncommon at all for me, in my role as a career and employment coach, to see individuals in the late 50’s, 60’s and even 70’s still wanting to work. Some want, or need, to keep working for financial reasons but the majority simply are just not ready to retire. And why should they? My mother-in-law is in her mid-seventies. She works full time and usually finds time to go for a run every day too. I’m planning on taking her zip-lining this fall. She is not a napper! I have one client that is seventy eight and is showing no signs of slowing down. I expect he runs circles around his younger co-workers. He has the experience to know how to get the job done right without wasting energy or time. He’s healthy, mentally sharp as a tack and has a sense of humour that keeps me laughing throughout the day.

Tree/Shrub Pruning, Planting Or Removal Lawn Maintenance Landscape Construction

People aren’t collecting their gold watches at 65 and then spending their days alternating between day time television, naps and perhaps golfing or fishing as often. No, we now have a generation of workers that want to keep on working. And I say more power to them. They have the knowledge and experience that only comes from time and the wisdom to know what is truly valuable to them. Naps or pay cheques, naps or being active physically, mentally and sociably; naps or contributing back to the community, naps or sharing your knowledge, naps or… well

you get the idea. My father-in-law loved retirement so much he did it four times. Apparently there wasn’t anything good on daytime television because every time he retired, boredom would set in and he’d find another job to go to. I once suggested he take the opportunity to nap. He told me there was still too much he had to do and experience. “Gaylene”, he counselled, “you can nap when you’re dead.” So to him, and all the older workers who keep on wanting to punch in on the time clock, I raise my glass of Dr. Pepper to you and say with a yawn, “keep on doing what you love. Age is but a number that tells us how many candles to put on your cake.” I’m going to go have a nap now; keeping up with you guys is tiring.

Start A Wine Journal What a great new hobby! By Kathryn Hartwell

Have you ever thought about starting your own wine journal? I wish I would have done this years ago. Just get yourself a fancy little notebook, (they are everywhere; there are lots to choose from at the dollar store) and start recording. How many times have you found yourself drinking a really nice wine and you say, “I have to remember the name of that one,” so you write it down on a scrap piece of paper, never to be seen again? Now, you will have a book that you record every single bottle of wine you ever drink. The only way to really learn to appreciate wine is by drinking it. Find a good, patient wine merchant (there are many of them out there) and buy a case of wine. Set yourself a price limit — say, $100 — and tell the merchant you want a mixed case of wine from all over the world that will not exceed that limit. Put the wines in a dark place with a moderate, constant temperature, like the bottom of your closet, and drink up. Take notes of the ones you like and dislike, especially the ones you might want to try again. When those are gone, buy another mixed case of wines that are new to you. Now is a great time to be discovering wine, because there are so many reasonably priced, tasty wines available from all over the world. Enjoy the journey! Take your interest in wine to the next level and have some fun with this. Note your thoughts on the flavour of the wine and possible food pairings. Reminisce about the day you drank the wine and record where you consumed it, who you enjoyed it with and the circumstances of that day. How did it look? What was its aroma? Why you did or did not enjoy it. Share your favourite wines from the journal with family and friends. No matter what the experts tell us, wine tastes are personal, and the details you’ll want to record are too. If you really want to go pro on this Wine Journal idea, buy a larger fancier book; this way you can peel the labels off the bottles and glue or tape them into your journal. The best way to do this in my own experience is to fill your kitchen sink with hot water, and throw the wine bottle in. Relax. Come back in an hour or so and see if the paper label is loose. Warm water should really help it to separate from the bottle without too much of a fuss. This all sounds like great fun, but it can be rant), with overtones of black pepper spice and roasting meat. The abundance of fruit sensations is often complemented by warm alcohol and gripping tannins. The Shiraz variety gives hearty, spicy reds. While Shiraz is used to produce many average wines, it can produce some of the world’s finest, deepest, and darkest reds with intense flavours and excellent longevity. Merlot: The black-cherry and herbal flavours are typical. The texture is round but a middle palate gap is common. Cabernet sauvignon: Is full-bodied, but firm and gripping when young. With age, rich currant qualities deepen. Bell pepper notes remain. Pinot noir: Very unlike Cabernet Sauvignon. The structure is deli-

a little daunting if you just want to pick out a bottle or two at a time – have you ever walked up and down the aisles looking at hundreds of bottles of wine and thought to yourself, where do you start? Well, here is a beginners list just to guide you through your first couple of bottles. Beginners list to get you started.

Types of white wine grapes

Riesling: Riesling wines are much lighter than Chardonnay wines. The aromas generally include fresh apples. The riesling variety expresses itself very differently depending on the district and the winemaking. Rieslings should taste fresh. Gewürztraminer: The typical taste is a fruity flavour with aromas of rose petal, peach, lychee, and allspice. A Gewürztraminer often appears not as refreshing as other kinds of dry whites. Chardonnay: Often wider-bodied (and more velvety) than other types of dry whites, with rich citrus (lemon, grapefruit) flavours. Fermenting in new oak barrels adds a buttery tone (vanilla, toast, coconut, toffee). A Californian Chardonnay should give citrus fruit flavours, hints of melon, vanilla, some toasty character and some creaminess. Sauvignon Blanc: Is generally lighter than Chardonnay — Sauvignon Blanc normally shows a herbal character suggesting bell pepper or freshly mown grass. The dominating flavours range from sour green fruits of apple, pear and gooseberry through to tropical fruits of melon, mango and blackcurrant. Quality unoaked Sauvignon Blancs will display smokey qualities; they require bright aromas and a strong acid finish; they are best grown in cool climates. Moscato: Is often sweet and always fruity, with a characteristic grape fruity and musky aroma. Moscato wines are easily recognizable to anyone who has tasted a Muscat table grape. Pinot grigio: A crisp, dry wine with good acid “bite” is typically made in Italy and Germany. Oregon or Alsace Pinot Gris shows aromatic, fruity flavours. Pairing with food is more difficult because Alsatian winemakers leave the grapes on the vine much longer. The perfume in Alsatian Pinot Gris makes it especially well-suited for Thai or spicy Chinese cuisine.

Types of red wine grapes

Shiraz: Aromas and flavours of wild black-fruit (such as blackcurcate and fresh. The tannins are very soft; this is related to the low level of polyphenols. The aromatics are very fruity (cherry, strawberry, plum), often with notes of tea-leaf, damp earth, or worn leather. Malbec: Malbec’s characteristics vary greatly depending on where it is grown and how it is transformed. Generally, it produces an easy-drinking style, well coloured wine that tastes of plums, berries, and spice. It is often blended with other varieties such as cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot to make Bordeaux style wines. So let’s raise a glass to some of the finer things in life: wine, books, and you. Cheers! Personally, I can’t wait to get started. Happy book-making! The REPs... Guiding you over the STEPS... Of Real Estate.

There are some steps to make the transition a bit easier for them. Prior to moving day, make sure your pets are fitted with collars and ID tags with your name and current cell-phone number in case they get out while the front door is open while moving a large couch. An excellent option is to kennel them or send them to a pet spa, but make sure you get their vaccinations up to date first. A crate is an excellent alternative. Make sure it’s large or small enough with plenty of circulation.

We are... 3 REMAX horizon Real Estate Professionals ... DEDICATED to work together and licensed in Residential, Rural, Commercial, Condo. We are here to help our clients reach ALL their real estate goals. Contact us: reps. remax@gmail.com. www.the-reps.ca

Moving with Your Household Pets

It’s hard to move without the doors wide open, providing the perfect escape. Crates and cages give your pets a feeling of security and safety. Make sure some of their favourite things are in there like their favourite blanket or stuffy. In extreme cases with very anxious pets, a trip to the vet for something to take the edge off may be in order.

Moving can be very stressful for your entire family, but it can be especially overwhelming for your pets.

Watch for signs of dehydration and ensure water is fresh and accessible during the transition. Upset tummies can be treated with a bit of mashed pumpkin mixed in with food and a touch of lemon in the water. But always check with your vet first.

We humans have an entire world outside of our homes but for our pets, be it dogs, cats, reptiles, or birds, their homes and their humans are their ENTIRE world.

At the new house, get an area ready for your pet and fill it with familiar things such as blankets, toys, food and water dishes. Let them explore the new place slowly and a little at a time so as not to overwhelm them too much and before you know it they will start to settle in. For dogs, ensure you accompany them outside for the first few bathroom breaks and help them explore their new environment.

Moving them from one place to another can be stressful and in some cases, health compromising for your pet. They can get lost in the shuffle or, worst case scenario, end up sick. ALBERTA LICENSED BONDED · INSURED

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity. I'm great at multi-tasking--I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at once. If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to blame. Never tell your problems to anyone, because 20 percent don't care and the other 80 percent are glad you have them. Doesn't ‘expect the unexpected’ mean that the unexpected is actually expected? Take my advice — I'm not using it.

Basil Aren’t herbs and spices just the best? One of the best things about summertime is that you can grow your very own fresh herbs in your garden and they keep coming back every single year. Actually my basil has practically taken over one of my raised garden beds; it is so happy (basil, anyone?). I really don’t mind because I absolutely love basil and it is so incredibly healthy for you. Basil is considered one of the healthiest herbs. It's best when fresh, exuding a sweet, earthy aroma that indicates not only the promise of pleasantly pungent flavour, but an impressive list of nutrients. Vitamin K, essential for blood clotting, is one of them. Just two tablespoons of basil provides 29 percent of the daily recommended value. Basil also provides vitamin A, which contains beta-carotenes, powerful antioxidants that protect the cells lining a number of numerous body structures, including the blood vessels, from free radical damage. This helps prevent cholesterol in blood from oxidizing, helping to prevent atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and stroke. Other vitamins and minerals in basil include iron, calcium, manganese, magnesium, vitamin C and potassium. Not surprisingly, basil also has antibacterial properties and contains DNA-protecting flavonoids.

Just last week, I whipped up some amazing pesto and, trust me, pesto may just be one of the easiest sauces you may ever make. I threw three handfuls of fresh picked basil, about ½ cup of shredded parmesan, ¼ cup of cashews (most people use pine nuts) into my food processor and as it was mixing, I slowly added olive oil until I had just the perfect consistency I was looking for. I boiled up a pot of linguini and man, oh man, that may have been the best pesto I have ever enjoyed in my life. It was just incredible. If you have any spare garden room or even a large pot, basil is super easy to grow and the thing with basil is that you can use it in sooooooo many different recipes it’s amazing. You can even dry it so that you can use it all year long; all you need to do is warm your oven to 140 degrees while placing a single layer of basil leaves on a baking sheet. Turn off the oven and pop in your pan for 20 minutes (you don't want them to actually bake). Remove the pan, cool the leaves, and store immediately in airtight bottles or zip-lock bags, away from sunlight. Just a few other ideas for your fresh basil: • Add it to any stew. • Potato salad with aioli, basil pesto, fried shallots, and Pecorino-Romano is full of contrasts that come together into one amazing side dish, adding extra oil to the pesto results in a saucier texture, great for coating the potatoes. • Fresh basil is a staple of Italian cooking, and what better way to eat it than on top of a homemade pizza? The basil singes from the high heat, its aroma filling the air. • Pork and peaches are a classic summer combination, and fresh basil takes it to new level. • For a simple appetizer or side, just grill cremini mushroom caps until tender and stuff them with a flavoured mayo. Season the mayo with basil, Parmesan, and garlic for an herbal, pleasant salty bite. Last but not least, instead of using mint for your summer Julep, try using basil—you will not be sorry!! Home Selling Tips

In this day of credit cards, it certainly makes life a lot easier if your hot water tank gives out – just go to the store, finance it for the next year and make the minimum payment for as long as you can get away with it.

Fix It First! If you need to make improvements or repairs to your home, do them before it goes on the market. Potential buyers aren't interested in hearing about your good intentions to get something fixed. Do it now.

It is important that you look after your home, especially these days when people are depending on selling their property for their retirement. They plan on using the equity in their home to live on when the time comes that they can no longer look after themselves and have not put enough aside over the years to have a little nest egg for retirement.

Curb Appeal! it's summer! Get outside and take a good hard look at what your home looks like from the street. Will buyers want to stop and take a better look? It’s all about that all-important "first impression."

Every house where love abides And friendship is a guest, Is surely home, and home sweet home For there the heart can rest.

"

~Henry Van Dyke

Statistics have shown that at least 24% of all Canadians rely on their homes for their retirement. It appears many people are eyeing their homes' market value as a store of potential income after they stop working. There are also those people who do not own a home, have not been wise enough to have personal savings, and will be relying upon the government as their main source of income.

Personally, we are working very hard to try to have our full mortgage paid off by the time we retire and there are many different ways in which to do this. We have our payment plan on a weekly term and we have increased the amount of the weekly payment. You also always have the option to make a lump sum payment once a year (the percentages change from bank to bank). All these are great ideas and not only do you save yourself a pile of interest, you can have your home paid off years earlier. This brings me back to the beginning of this article and the importance of maintaining your home, especially if you are one of those Canadians who plans on using their home equity as the main source of income in your retirement years.
