Town Hall Meeting
watch, watch the watch, watch the watch...”
The town fathers were looking for a way to increase attendance and participation at their regular meetings. One member suggested bringing in a hypnotist.
The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth, light gleaming off its polished surface. Hundreds of pairs of eyes followed the swaying watch, until suddenly the hypnotist’s fingers slipped and the watch fell to the floor.
The officials agreed, and a famous hypnotist was hired, publicity distributed, and everyone was pleased. A few weeks later, the meeting hall was packed, and the townspeople sat fascinated as the hypnotist withdrew a pocket watch. The hypnotist began chanting, “Watch the
“Crap!” said the hypnotist. It took three weeks to clean up the town hall.

Things I have learned I’ve learned that I like my teacher because she cries when we sing ‘Silent Night’. - Age 6 I’ve learned that you can’t hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk. - Age 7 I’ve learned that when I wave to people in the country, they stop what they are doing and wave back. - Age 9 I’ve learned that just when I get my room the way I like it, Mom makes me clean it up. - Age 13 I’ve learned that if you want to cheer yourself up, you should try cheering someone else up. - Age14 I’ve learned that although it’s hard to admit it, I’m secretly glad my parents are strict with me. - Age15 I’ve learned that silent company is often more healing than words of advice. - Age 24 I’ve learned that brushing my child’s hair is one of life’s pleasures. - Age 26 I’ve learned that wherever I go, the world’s worst drivers have followed me there. - Age 29 I’ve learned that if someone says something unkind about me, I must live so that no one will believe it. - Age 39 I’ve learned that there are people who love you dearly, but just don’t know how to show it. - Age 41 I’ve learned that you can make some one’s day by simply sending them a little card. - Age 44 I’ve learned that the greater a person’s sense of guilt, the greater his need to cast blame on others. - Age 46 I’ve learned that children and grandparents are natural allies. - Age 47 I’ve learned that singing ‘Amazing Grace’ can lift my spirits for hours. - Age 49 I’ve learned that motel mattresses are better on the side away from the phone. - Age 50 I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a man by the way he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. - Age 51 I’ve learned that keeping a vegetable garden is worth a medicine cabinet full of pills. - Age 52 www.thenewsyneighbour.com
I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you miss them terribly after they die. - Age 53 I’ve learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life. - Age 58 I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. Age 62 I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back. - Age 64 I’ve learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But if you focus on your family, the needs of others, your work, meeting new people, and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you. - Age 65 I’ve learned that whenever I decide to do something with kindness, I usually make the right decision. - Age 68 I’ve learned that everyone can use a prayer. - Age 72 I’ve learned that it pays to believe in miracles. And to tell the truth, I’ve seen several. - Age 73 I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one. - Age 82 I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love that human touch - holding hands a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. - Age 85 I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn. - Age 92

From the Publishers I can’t believe we just finished our October issue! Where did the summer go? Our next issue is already starting to focus on Christmas; isn’t that CRAZY?! As much as I love Christmas, I am not ready to say goodbye to the green grass, my flip flops and the warm sun! This issue is our 60th issue; this is also crazy to everyone here at The Newsy Neighbour. Time goes by so fast and time is so precious! Make sure to take a minute to go outside and soak up the last bit of sun, smell the flowers and look at all the leaves as they turn all their beautiful colours before they are gone! This is our Halloween, Thanksgiving and Home Design issue. There are some wonderful articles in the home design section, and many amazing local businesses you can use for your home design needs! Maybe you can start planning on an indoor winter project from the inspiration in that section this month! Our Halloween page is full of fun ideas that you may not have thought of, and our Thanksgiving page had me laughing out loud with the turkey lament. For those of you that will be sparing the life of a turkey this year, make sure to read “Veggie Heads” on page 20 for recipes on Tofurkey. I have a feeling our Denise will be trying out these recipes. They actually sound delicious to me (even though I am not a vegetarian); maybe I can convince my husband to try something new this Thanksgiving! Yea right!! Our family page talks about how important it is to be grateful for what we have this Thanksgiving, and reminds you to take a look at what others don’t have and some ways you can help. Start teaching your kids to be grateful for all their toys but want to share them with the less fortunate. It would be a fun and educational experience for the family to all volunteer somewhere this Thanksgiving too! We have some fabulous “new to the magazine” advertisers this month. Please welcome them by showing your support! As always, continue to support the businesses that make this magazine possible and make sure to tell them where you saw their ad. Safe Trick-r-Treating and Happy Thanksgiving from your friends at The Newsy Neighbour! Aleesha Gosling, Kathryn Hartwell & Denise Geremia

A New Look for the Canadian Tour!
Great news for the financially challenged Canadian Tour, as it is being taken over by the PGA! The Canadian Tour will soon be re-branded as the PGA Tour of Canada. “This is great news for everyone,” says Tim Garbett, executive director of the Canadian Tour ATB Financial Classic presented by Telus. “Players, sponsors, fans and the venues will all benefit and the quality of the fields will improve.” The PGA loaned the Canadian Tour money last year to cover operating costs and recently met with the Canadian Tour players to outline their plan. The plan includes the Mexican Tour (Tour De Las Americas). Canada and Mexico will now be a direct feeder to the Nationwide Tour. If everything goes according to plan, there would be 10 events in Canada and 10 events in Mexico. The power of the PGA brand should increase marketing opportunities and TV exposure for the PGA Tour of Canada. “We’ve had a great relationship with the Canadian Tour,” says John Windwick, ATB Financial, VP of community and government relations. “This news could take our partnership to a new level.” A strong rumour at the Windermere Golf Club for the Canadian Tour event in Edmonton was Telus is re-thinking its partnership with the Canadian Skins Game. The skins game is getting old and tired. It’s a very expensive property for hosting and activation. TV ratings do not justify the expense. If Telus was to direct some of these funds to the PGA Tour of Canada, we could once again see Edmonton and Calgary host a yearly event. This would mean three stops in Alberta including the Syncrude Boreal Open in Fort McMurray. The PGA Tour of Canada will be in Calgary next year at Country Hills. IGGY Update! Since we’re talking about sponsorship, I understand Scotiabank has ended its long standing relationship with CalPage 12

gary Flames Captain Jarome Iginla. Does the major sponsor of the Saddledome have some inside information? Or maybe they are just tired of those bad TV commercials? My sources tell me, the Flames have had many discussions with Iginla’s agent Don Meehan on a contract extension, but have hit nothing but roadblock after roadblock. Does Iggy really want to finish his career as a Flame or is he just as confused as everybody else with the direction this organization is taking? If a new contract is not announced soon, the Flames may have no choice but to move their most popular player. The organization certainly can’t risk having him walk away next summer as an unrestricted free agent. If Iginla truly is part of the future moving forward, the Flames must sign their captain to a new four or five year contract extension ASAP! Prediction Time! As a new CFL season is underway, I may as well put it in print. The Calgary Stampeders will finish in second place in the Western Conference this season. The Stamps will need to take advantage of a relatively easy schedule in the first four weeks of the season. If not, they may drop back to third! The BC Lions are the class of the Western Conference and I would not be surprised if they win 14 or 15 games. Henry Burris and the Hamilton Tiger Cats are going to be the team to beat in the East. Montreal and Saskatchewan will be on the outside looking in come playoff time. About Jock Wilson:

My Secretary Two weeks ago was my 44th birthday and I wasn’t feeling too hot that morning. I went downstairs for breakfast, knowing my wife would be pleasant, wish me a happy birthday, and probably have a present for me. She didn’t even say, “Good morning”, let alone any “Happy Birthday!” I thought, “Well, that’s wives for you. The children will remember.” The children came down for breakfast but they didn’t say a word. When I started to the office I was feeling pretty low and despondent. As I walked into my office, my secretary, Janet said, “Good morning, boss. Happy Birthday!” I felt a little better. Someone had remembered. I worked until noon, and then Janet knocked on my door and said, “You know it is such a beautiful day outside and it is your birthday. Let’s go to lunch, just you and me.” I answered, “My goodness, that’s the greatest thing I’ve heard all day. Let’s go!” We went to lunch. We didn’t go where we normally go. We went out into the country to a little private place. We had two martinis and enjoyed lunch tremendously. On the way back to the office, she said, “You know, it is such a beautiful day; we don’t need to go back to the office, do www.thenewsyneighbour.com

She went into the bedroom and, in about six minutes she came out carrying a big birthday cake, followed by my wife, children and dozens of our friends. They were all singing Happy Birthday! …and there I sat on the couch........naked.

Halloween k
You can carve some awesome pumpkins freehand, but if you want to create a real masterpiece, you may want to use a pumpkin carving pattern. If you’ve never carved a pumpkin this way before, you may be a bit intimidated; but don’t worry, it’s easier than you think and you’ll love the results. Draw one yourself on a piece of paper then trace it to the pumpkin or go online and search for ‘pumpkin carving ideas.
k
Have a pumpkin carving contest for all the kids in your neighbourhood.
k
Instead of buying your pumpkins in a grocery store, check your community resources for local pumpkin farms. Make a week-end trip with the family and let them pick out their own pumpkins!
k
How about instead of throwing away your jack-o-lanterns when they start to rot, start a tradition of burying them instead! Make a ceremony, get everyone together and honour the pumpkins that gave their lives for your Halloween!
k
Sit in a circle and start a scary ghost story. Each guest adds on to the story, after repeating previous story additions, until it reaches a scary ending! Make whoever messes up the story bob for apples.
k
The new way of bobbing for apples is to hang them by their stems with string from the ceiling and let people try to bite them! It is actually harder than bobbing in water and it’s also much less messy.
k
A good memory game is, “Scary Objects”. Place a bunch of Halloween related objects on a tray; let everyone look at them, then take the tray away. Have people write down what they remember and see who’s closest.
k
Making your own fake blood is less expensive than buying ready-made! It’s easy and only takes a few items like Corn syrup and food colouring. Remember, if you are using fake blood or making your own, it can be sticky and stains very badly! Make sure that whatever you put it on is expendable! Rubbing some petroleum jelly over skin before the blood is applied will help keep the staining down.
k
If you have porch steps, make sure they are easy to see for all your trick-or-treating guests. Use jack-o-lanterns to light the stairs. Put a high intensity glow stick inside for light instead of a candle. Its much safer. If you are having a haunted housef for the neighbourhood to join, it’s a good idea to check with your insurance company to make sure your home owners insurance covers you, should there be an accident.
k
Make sure that any store bought costume is fire retardant. Nylon and other materials used to make mass produced costumes are usually highly flammable. Those made out of vinyl can be particularly hazardous.
k
Make sure you set a time that your kids should be home if they go trick or treating with a group of friends or their sibling without you. Make sure they know how important it is for them to be home on time or to call home if there is a problem. Also make sure they know to stick to well known streets so they don’t get lots. A great idea is to buy a set of walkie-talkies.
k
Just because you think a certain Halloween costume for pets is cute doesn’t mean that they will enjoy wearing them! Try it on them in advance and see how they react.
k
That bowl of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not your pet! Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate— can be very dangerous for dogs and cats. Candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems. If you do suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian asap.
k
Dress-up can be a big mess for some pets. Please don’t put your dog or cat in a costume UNLESS you know he or she loves it. Wearing a costume may cause undue stress.
k
Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification incase they dart out when you open the door for trick-or-treaters. Page 14

What type of music do ghosts prefer? Spirituals, of course.
HAIRY SPIDER’S HALLOWEEN
What is this strange celebration called Halloween? It’s the silliest event I’ve ever seen. Children dress up in costumes really weird and funny, Like ghosts, spiders and a very scary mummy. They run around the streets after dark, They try to scare each other and make all the dogs bark. They bang on neighbours doors and yell out, “Trick or Treat!” And people give them candy and all things yummy and sweet. They wear their costumes to day care. And they’re allowed to wear them in school, Where they parade around the halls and gym And break all sorts of school rules. I have a terrific idea, I know what I’m going to do. I’ll dress up in a “special costume” That looks just like you!

HAPPY Thanksgiving!! TURKEY’S LAMENT When I was a young turkey, new to the coop, My big brother Mike took me out on the stoop, Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow, And he told me there was something that I had to know; His look and his tone I will always remember, When he told me of the horrors of... Thanksgiving; “Come about August, now listen to me, Each day you’ll be thick, where once you were thin, And you’ll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin. “And then one morning, when you’re warm in your bed, In’ll burst the farmer’s wife, and hack off your head; “Then she’ll pluck out all your feathers so you’re bald’n pink, And scoop out all your insides and leave ya lyin’ in the sink, “And then comes the worst part” he said, not bluffing. “She’ll spread your cheeks and pack your rear with stuffing”. Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat. I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat, And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked, I’d have to lay low and remain overlooked; I began a new diet of nuts and granola, High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola, And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes, I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes,
Redneck Thanksgiving You know you’re a redneck when… • Thanksgiving dinner is squirrel and dumplings. • If you have a complete set of salad bowls, and they all say Cool Whip on the side. • You’ve used your ironing board as a buffet table. • On Thanksgiving Day you have to decide which pet to eat. • Your turkey platter is an old hub cap. • Your best dishes have Dixie printed on them. • Your stuffing’s secret ingredient comes from the bait shop. • Your only condiment on the dining room table is ketchup. • Side dishes include beef jerky and Moon Pies. • You have to go outside to get something out of the fridge. • The directions to your house include “turn off the paved road”. • You consider pork and beans to be a gourmet food. • You have an Elvis Jell-O mold. • Your secret family recipe is illegal. • You serve Vienna sausage as an appetizer.
Thanksgiving Divorce Carl, in Dallas, calls his son in New York just before Thanksgiving and tells him, “I am sorry to tell you but your mother and I are going to get a divorce. We can’t stand the sight of each other anymore. I am telling you first because you are the eldest, please tell your sister.” When Eddie calls his sister, Julie, she says: “No way are they getting divorced, I’m going to see them for Thanksgiving.” Julie phones her parents and tells them both, “Promise you won’t do anything until I get there. We will both be coming tomorrow. Until then, don’t take any action, please listen to me,” and hangs up. The father puts down the phone and turns to his wife and says, “Good news! The kids are coming for Thanksgiving and they are both paying their own way!”
I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half, And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed; But ‘twas I who was laughing, under my breath, As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death; And sure enough when Thanksgiving rolled around, I was the last turkey left in the entire compound; So now I’m a pet in the farmer’s wife’s lap; I haven’t a worry, so I eat and I nap, She held me today, while sewing and humming, And smiled at me and said, “Christmas is coming...” Page 16

MY Favourite, FABULOUS, FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF By: Kathryn Hartwell
Herbs I love herbs and spices and have a whole cupboard designated to hold them all. This year, I moved into a new old home with a huge yard big enough for a large garden and tons of space for the herb garden I always dreamed of having; did I say I love herbs and spices? Now, that it’s October, I gaze with pride at all my beautiful plants and feel a little dismayed at the thought of the first frost coming and taking them from me. I need to figure out a way to save them. I cannot bring them all into my house, so I must find out how to preserve their goodness for my soups, stews and other creative recipes for the cold winter ahead. I’m sure you all feel the same way – what on earth can I do? Well, there seems to be a few different ways to preserve all your fabulous herbs and I have shared all this important information with all you herb harvesters. Tips to know: harvest early in the morning, after the dew dries, but before the heat of the day. Harvest herbs before flowering, otherwise, leaf production declines. Annual herbs can be harvested until frost. Perennial herbs can be clipped until the threat of frost. Freezing is one of the easiest methods to preserve herbs. Rinse the herbs quickly in cold water, shake off the excess, and then chop coarsely. Place generous pinches of herbs in water-filled ice cube trays and freeze. Transfer herb-cubes to plastic bags or airtight plastic containers. Another method for freezing is to spread the herbs loosely onto a cookie sheet to freeze, and then transfer the herbs into a large plastic bag and seal. When they thaw, herbs will not be suitable for garnish, but can be used in cooking. Do not re-freeze herbs after thawing. Drying is the traditional method of herb preservation. If the herbs are clean, do not wet them. Otherwise, rinse dust and dirt from the foliage, shake off the excess water, and spread the herbs out to dry on paper towels or dishcloths until all surface moisture has evaporated. Remove any dead or damaged foliage. Then, tie the stems into small bundles with twine or string and hang them upside down in a warm, dry, airy place out of the sun. Be sure to make small, loose bundles and allow for good air circulation around each bunch. Microwave drying is a quick and easy method to dry small amounts of herbs. Lay a single layer of clean, dry leaves between dry paper towels and place them in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes on high power. Drying will vary with the moiswww.thenewsyneighbour.com
ture content of the herb and the wattage of the microwave oven. Let the leaves cool. If they are not brittle, reheat for 30 seconds and retest. Repeat as needed. Thick leaved herbs may need to be air dried for several days before microwaving. Conventional ovens can also be used to dry herbs. Spread the herbs on cookie sheets and dry at the lowest temperature setting possible. Home food dehydrators also do an excellent job of drying herbs. Follow the directions provided with the dehydrator. Herbs are sufficiently dry when they are brittle and crumble easily. When the leaves are dry, separate them from their stems and package the leaves in rigid containers with tight fitting lids, glass or hard plastic are best. To preserve full flavour, avoid crushing the leaves until you are ready to use them. Store dried herbs in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, moisture, and heat. Many herbs can keep for a year if stored properly. Steeping in Oil Choose an oil; olive oil is preferred but any other oils that you like are generally fine. You have the choice of keeping the leaves attached to the stem or removing them and adding them separately. If you want to use the oil as herbal flavoured oil, the stems are fine. Place in a bottle as a container; herbs remaining on their stem inside the oil bottle look very attractive as ornamental arrangements, as well as being useful culinary items. If you wish to remove the herbal leaves for cooking, a shorter, wider container is preferable to enable you to put in a spoon and scoop out the herbs and oil. Keep in a cool or refrigerated place, especially during warmer months. Use within 6 months of preparation. Bulk Butters: Chop leaves and mix with butter to taste. Freeze in cube sizes appropriate for cooking (just add the butter pat while dish is cooking). One teaspoon of dried herbs is equivalent to 1 tablespoon of fresh. 8 Steps for Freezing Herbs in Oil Choose firm, fresh herbs. If you don’t have your own herb garden, you can buy them from the market. If you wish, you can chop them fine, pr leave them in larger sprigs and leaves. Pack the wells of ice cube trays about 2/3 full of herbs. You can mix up the herbs, too; think about freezing a bouquet garni of sage, thyme, and rosemary to add to winter roast chickens and potatoes! Pour extra-virgin olive oil or melted, unsalted butter over the herbs. Cover lightly with plastic wrap and freeze overnight. Remove the frozen cubes and store in freezer containers or small bags. Don’t forget to label each container or bag with the type of herb (and oil) inside! You can also use chicken stock. Herbal Vinegars Fill a tall jar about halfway with freshly cut herbs. Cover completely with vinegar, and let sit in a sunny windowsill for 3-4 www.thenewsyneighbour.com

weeks. Strain out herbs, and rebottle in a pretty bottle if you’d like. Will keep indefinitely in a cool cupboard. You can use any kind of vinegar you’d like, although I highly recommend you avoid white vinegar, even the organic kind, if you’re planning to ingest it. Herbal Salts & Sugars This is a great way to preserve highly scented herbs such as lavender or lemon balm. Slip a few fresh sprigs into a jar of salt or sugar, and let sit covered tightly for several weeks. Use the herbal salts for a fabulous relaxing bath time experience. Herbal sugars are wonderful for baking – use lavender sugar when making cakes or cupcakes, or lemongrass sugar when making frosting for a cake. It has a delicate lemon taste, which everyone will love. Holy Fantastic and Fabulous! I’m overjoyed! I hear there is a frost warning tonight – I see some really fun work in my future. How fulfilling it will be to gaze at all my herbs on my counter in oil and in my freezer waiting to be used? Ooh, I feel so happy inside!

Veggie Heads
By: Kathryn Hartwell
Tofurky This is one of those celebrations that I really feel sorry for vegetarians; how on Earth can they possible pass up on turkey, dressing and gravy?! My goodness, just the delectable mouthwatering aroma of a crispy-skinned brown and succulent turkey roasting in the oven makes me want to cry with happiness! What on Earth does a vegetarian eat on Thanksgiving, the poor things?! So, out of my sympathy for them, I found some pretty good recipes so not to leave them out of the glorious Thanksgiving tradition.
This is a recipe for a Tofurky glaze to bake your vegetarian Thanksgiving centerpiece Southwestern-style. It’s a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy. 1 Tofurky roast or other mock vegetarian turkey roast, 2 tsp chili powder, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/4 tsp allspice, 1/4 tsp cumin, Dash sea salt, Dash cayenne pepper, 2 tbsp maple syrup, 1 tbsp water. In a small bowl, whisk together all ingredients, except Tofurky roast. Roast your tofurky or other mock vegetarian turkey according to package instructions. While cooking, baste your Tofurky occasionally with the spice mixture glaze, coating thoroughly.
Crock Pot Tofurky 1 Tofurky Roast (can be frozen) 1 can cranberry sauce (chunky or smooth) 1 package dry vegetarian onion soup mix* 16 ounces vegetable broth 1 Tablespoon garlic powder (optional) Empty packet of soup mix into crock pot. Add 16 ounces of vegetable broth and garlic powder (if using). Add the can of cranberry sauce, stirring to mix. Place Tofurky Roast in the center of the pot. Cook on high setting. Baste your Tofurky Roast about every half hour. Cook a frozen Tofurky Roast for about three hours. A thawed Tofurky Roast should take about two hours. Remove Roast from crock pot, retaining the cooking liquid or sauce. Slice thin and pour sauce on top to serve. Enjoy. This recipe can be doubled if your crock pot is large enough for two Tofurky Roasts. *be careful to check the ingredients of the vegetable soup mix, that it is not made with animal stock! These actually don’t sound too bad, I guess… if you can’t eat a real turkey! Happy Thanksgiving to all – it takes all kinds to make the world! ~ Kathryn Hartwell
It seems vegetarian have the perfect Thanksgiving treat called (are you ready?) Tofurky! Yup, you heard me right! There are lots of different ways to cook it too; here are just a few.
Traditional Poultry Seasoned Tofurky This recipe uses plenty of poultry seasoning blend to get that classic Thanksgiving smell and taste for your Tofurky or other turkey substitute. 1 Tofurky roast or other vegetarian mock turkey, Page 20

AGES AND STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT THREE TO FOUR YEARS By Jeanette MacKay, Reprinted This is the ninth in a series of articles on child development written to help parents and caregivers recognize and understand the ages and stages of a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development during the first five years. These are only guidelines as every child is unique with their own personality, learning style and family background. There are, however, some general similarities that can help you recognize the stages of development and offer a nurturing environment where your child may develop to their full potential. The fourth year of your child’s life is a very active time. By the time he reaches the age of four he will be feeling that he is very capable. Your child will develop differently than other children in the areas of communication, movement and getting along with others- so don’t put too much pressure on him to do more than he is capable of. Giving a lot of praise will encourage him to push himself to more accomplishments. Emotionally, your child is experiencing a broad range of feelings. She is now able to express her needs with words and is able to express her anger verbally rather than physically. As she begins to understand more words she is less upset with limits or rules and discipline. She can understand how others may be feeling and is beginning to be able to empathize or put herself in someone else’s shoes. She may try to comfort someone who is upset. Physically, your child likes a lot of activity and is able to climb, slide, swing and run several steps with alternating hand movements. He catches, throws and bounces a ball and he is learning to use outstretched arms to catch a large ball. He tries to hop on one foot, can stand on one foot without support for a few seconds, and goes up and down stairs using alternating feet (one foot on one step). His fine motor skills are developing to the point where Page 22
The Newsy Neighbour
he can build a tower of nine blocks and handle scissors to cut out simple designs. He draws a house and people with at least two to four body parts. He can undo buttons and zippers and is able to do up large buttons. Intellectually, your child can use sentences of five or more words and understands three part related directions. She understands position words like in, out, behind, in front of, and asks a lot of why and how questions. She is able to recite rhymes and sing songs from memory. She has a sense of humour and enjoys silly rhyming songs and riddles. She speaks clearly and uses plurals and pronouns like ‘I, you and me.’ Dramatic play is becoming more realistic and she uses real life situations for play like school, a visit to a fire station or shopping. She can sort objects by colour and size and can classify objects by purpose. Your child understands the order of daily routines so you can tell her, “After lunch we will go to the park,” and she will know when that is going to happen. She is also able to understand home rules which are short and simple. Socially, your child enjoys playing with other children and socializes well. He is more able to take turns, share, cooperate and interact while playing. He looks for adult approval in anything he does and imitates mom or dad in play. Your child likes to talk and carry on conversation and says please and thank you. Comfort, play with and teach your child by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Use favourite music or nursery rhymes to explore movement activities. Different types of ball games will encourage the use of things like bats, rackets, ball gloves and golf clubs. Help your child try more challenging skills and give her encouragement and praise for her developing skills with words like “You are so good at catching the ball.” Games with simple directions like ‘Simon Says’ and ‘Red Light, Green Light’ help develop listening skills. Offer measuring spoons and cups for water play and many different textures for craft materials like feathers, cotton balls, popsicle sticks and beads. She will enjoy having a variety of writing and drawing materials as well as scissors to cut out her favourite pictures from magazines; these activities will help develop her fine motor skills. Give your child responsibilities like emptying the waste basket or watering a plant. Ask about your child’s day and take the time to listen when they want to talk to you, it will take only a minute or two to show her that what she is feeling is important to you. Encourage independence by letting your child make a sandwich or dress themselves. Use puppets, dolls and stuffed animals to explore conflict or feelings. Talk about events, things and people that make her sad, angry or happy. Provide props for role play or make a “tickle trunk” where old clothes, costumes, etc. are available to her for dramatic play. Find opportunities for your child to play with others by joining a play group or inviting one or two children for a play morning or afternoon. Most importantly, model the behaviours you want to see in your child. She’ll learn to have manners and manage her emotions by watching you do these things. Schedule a quiet time each day when you can give your full attention to her, reading a favourite book and cuddling. Remember your child is never too old or too big to be hugged and told that you love her so please do it often.

Jokes for Concert Contest Entries A funny story... My son was about seven years old and we didn’t have a lot of money and we bought this old brown Chevy, which had rust spots all over it; some of them had eaten right through the metal. Anyways, when he saw the car, his comment was “cool, bullet holes!” He has been kidded about this for the last 20 years! Shanon I would LOVE to be entered to win tickets to Sylvia Browne! Here is my funny joke: A young girl was talking about her Christmas wish list with her mother. It was 2 months until the big day, and she was desperately pleading for a baby brother or sister. Her Mom tried to explain that it was not possible, and that there was simply not enough time to arrange for a gift like that. The girl innocently looked at her Mom and asked, “Can’t you do the same as Dad-

dy’s work when they run out of time? Just put more men on the job!” Hope that was enough to win me tickets! - Debbie I will tell you a funny story that happened to me last month…… I picked up an item that I won on the Strathmore Bidding site and when I got to the door a little boy (3 yrs old-ish) answers the door. I wasn’t going to do the exchange with him, so I called out “Hello,” hoping that his mom or dad were there. His mom comes to the door and she apologized that she forgot that I was coming to pick up the item. She grabbed this garbage bag from the closet and we did the exchange and the little boy says, “You here to pick up the garbage?” I thought that was so funny! *Expensive bag of garbage*. Cheers, Melissa - CONTEST WINNER! Funny story: A few years back, I provided childcare for a friend of mine. Her youngest son was about 3 at the time. He was always entertaining to have around. One morning, he arrived smelling very strongly of his mother’s perfume. When I commented on it, he told me his mother told him he smells just like a coat hanger. Seeing my confusion, his mother, trying not to laugh, told me what she had said after he dumped her whole bottle of perfume on himself, was that he “smelled like a hooker”!! Joyce

You’ll also need to research motorcycle insurance. No matter what policy you purchase, you typically will be covered by property damage liability and bodily injury liability. The first coverage, property damage liability, helps protect you from paying for the repair or replacement of another motorist’s vehicle or property in case you were to be involved in a crash. The second coverage, bodily injury liability, helps protect you from paying medical costs, loss of income and other qualifying expenses for other people involved in an accident. In addition to the legally required coverage, you can opt for custom motorcycle insurance that could cover other costs like: * Lease/loan gap coverage * Replacement ride protection * Coverage for your passengers * Coverage for replacing your after-market customized bike * Death and Disability Income coverage Once you have your motorcycle insurance needs sorted out, you’re ready to go and purchase a bike. Soon you’ll be heading down the road after buying your first motorcycle, exploring your neighbourhood in a whole new setting.

He then sat down to answer her questions. “I’m so happy to see you recovering,” he says. The woman responds, “Thank you doctor, but what about my baby? Is everything all right? Where is my baby?” He replies, “Yes, despite your injury, we were actually able to perform a fairly normal delivery procedure.”
Paintless Dent Repair Door Dings, Hail Damage, Minor Dents Paintless Dent Repair is a Low Cost effective way of removing dents without repainting.
“In fact,” he goes on, “You’ve given birth to twins - a boy and a girl!” The woman is very happy and asks when she can see her new babies. The doctor replies, “Soon, we will call your brother to bring them in. We’ve already sent the infants home with your brother. We’ll call and tell him you’re okay. While you were unconscious, your brother took care of everything for you. He even gave the babies names.” At this point, the woman gets nervous, “Doctor, my brother has never been good at coming up with names! What name did he give my little girl?” The doctor answered that her name was Denise. “Oh, Denise, that’s not so bad. What name did he give my boy?” The doctor answered, “Denephew.”

Thanksgiving FAMILY PAGE Every month we try to make the Family Pages fun and full of ideas for families; and we hope we have been successful in our endeavor! This Thanksgiving Issue, I felt the need to share the fact that perhaps not all families are as fortunate, and since Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for the people and blessings of the past year, I thought we should not forget amid the fun and frenzy to try to give something back. Consider ways you can help out in your community by donating or volunteering your time! In our September Issue we ran an ad for School
Fuel and with every single “I AM A….Fruits and
Vegetables sold $5.00 will be donated to this very important organization. I was stunned to think
that children in Strathmore were going to school without breakfast!! This program was started last year through Hope Community Church. Last year, Alicia Peterson and Christin Dewald, members of the Hope Community Church, went to the principals at the public elementary schools and asked what they could do to help care for kids in the town. One idea the schools needed help with was kids needed breakfast. Every day, members of the School Fuel Program are in the schools serving a healthy breakfast to students. Without the support of the community, School Fuel wouldn’t be able to operate and provide their services to those who need them. Every year when my children were younger, I would take them to “Toy’s R Us” and together we would buy toys to give to children for Christmas. I believe they understood how important it was to give to families who could not afford presents for their children. Whether you’re donating clothes to the Salvation Army or making holiday food baskets for homeless charities, involve your kids in the process. Encourage your kids to raid their own closets for clothes and shoes they won’t be using anymore. Ask them to help you pick out the canned goods you’ll be including in your food baskets. The point is getting your children to pitch in while ensuring that they’re enjoying themselves. It can be tough to teach children the value of giving in a season when they're surrounded by messages about the value of getting.
Here are some ways to start: Your young child might be happy to help bake cookies for a friend but end up wanting to keep the gift herself. Plan for this by baking enough cookies to keep and enough cookies to give. Young children need help in learning to share. You may think that donating to cancer research is important, but your child, who is an animal lover, may be more interested in making sure the dogs at the humane society have an extra treat during the holidays. Help her find a way to give the gift she feels is important. Volunteer your family's time at a soup kitchen or senior
center. Gather small-size toiletries, such as toothpaste and shampoo, and pack them in decorated gift bags to take to a homeless shelter. Ask your child if he'll help you baby-sit for a neighbour's toddler so she can do her shopping or help you rake the leaves for an elderly friend. Have a family conversation about what you're thankful for. That will help your child realize that what she values may be missing in other people's lives. Start a tradition in which family members set aside one of their gifts to give to someone less fortunate. Think of someone without a family - a soldier, a distant relative, or a friend in the hospital - and write a letter as a family to make the person feel loved and included during the holidays. Talk about beginning the New Year with a family giving box. Everyone can regularly add a small amount of money to the box to contribute to a group or cause the family agrees to support. Giving gives children a sense of self-esteem and pride. "Giving is addictive. It gets in your blood. It makes you realize that you and your actions matter." Find volunteer projects. There are plenty of places to volunteer -- schools, community groups, religious organizations, clubs, and more. “Look to your own community first."
And, remember where it all began many, many years ago. The History of Thanksgiving The origin of the first Thanksgiving in Canada goes back to the explorer Martin Frobisher who had been trying to find a northern passage to the Pacific Ocean. Frobisher's Thanksgiving celebration was not for harvest but was in thanks for surviving the long journey from England through the perils of storms and icebergs. In 1578, on his third and final voyage to these regions, Frobisher held a formal ceremony in Frobisher Bay in Baffin Island (present-day Nunavut) to give thanks to God and, in a service ministered by the preacher Robert Wolfall, they celebrated Communion — the first-ever service in these regions. Years later, the tradition of a feast would continue as more settlers began to arrive in the Canadian colonies. As many more settlers arrived in Canada, more celebrations of good harvest became common. New immigrants into the country, such as the Irish, Scottish and Germans, would also add their own traditions to the harvest celebrations. Thanksgiving Day in Canada has been a holiday on the second Monday of October since 1957. Now I feel special, not to date myself, but 1957 was truly a very special year and the year I was born (did I really say that?)! It is what it is. Thanksgiving is a chance for people to give thanks for a good harvest and other good fortunes in the past year.
. It's in giving that we receive."

Keeping hardwood floors looing beautiful is easier than you think No matter what the setting, the good looks and durability of hardwood floors can be maintained with minimal effort. It’s simply a matter of proper care and maintenance.
General maintenance guidelines All hardwood floors should be cleaned regularly to remove dirt and grit from between the floor boards. Avoid using a wet mop which can dull the finish. Instead, sweep with either a dust mop or broom that features exploded tips, or vacuum the floors using a vacuum with special hardwood floor attachments or one with the beater bar turned off. Wipe up any spills immediately, using a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, starting at the edges of the spill and working toward the center. Allowing spills to remain on hardwood floors could damage the finish, as well as the wood. Avoid walking on hardwood floors with sports cleats or high heel shoes in disrepair. These can scratch the finish, or even dent the floor. Placing felt pads on the bottom of furniture legs will also minimize scratches. Further minimize scratches by placing scatter rugs at all entrances to help keep small stones and debris out. But choose wisely. Scatter rugs with rubber backs can discolour wood floors. Special rug mats can be purchased from a wood flooring retailer to protect the floors from discolouration. Page 32
The Newsy Neighbour
Knowing which type of finish applied to protect the hardwood floor is important. Different flooring finishes require different kinds of care, so if or when in doubt, contact the flooring manufacturer or a wood flooring professional in your area. There are three major types of wood flooring finishes available - surface finishes, wax and acrylic impregnated - and experts stress that using the right maintenance products will protect and prolong the life of the floor. Surface finishes, also referred to as urethanes or polyurethanes, are practical and very popular. They remain on the surface of the wood and form a protective coating that is water-resistant, durable and requires minimal maintenance. For cleaning purposes, use products recommended by the flooring manufacturer. If the floors were finished or refinished on site, contact the installer. If neither is known, use a generic hardwood floor cleaner which can be purchased at a retail flooring store. Never use wax-based or petroleum-based products on a surface finish floor, as they will damage the finish. Wax finishes soak into the wood, harden to form a protective penetrating seal, and when needed, are maintained with additional thin applications of wax. Only solvent-based waxes, buffing pastes or cleaning liquids made specifically for wax-finished wood floors should be used. Use cleaning products, available at retail flooring stores, made specifically for wax finishes. Follow the directions carefully to determine how long the cleaner should remain on the floor. Once the floor is clean, apply a new coat of wax to restore luster. Acrylic impregnated finishes are injected into the wood to create a super-hard, extremely durable floor. These finishes most often are used in high traffic areas of malls, restaurants and other commercial settings. Cleaning an acrylic impregnated floor depends on the finish. If the floor has a urethane-based finish, follow the same procedures suggested for surface finished floors. If the floor has a nonurethane-based finish, use a spray and buff system, as recommended by the manufacturer.
Don’t hesitate to investigate It pays to be knowledgeable. Proper care and maintenance will protect and prolong the performance of hardwood flooring for a lifetime, and even longer.

Appliance Maintenance Tips
1. Verify your oven door has a tight seal. Without a proper seal, your oven can lose more than 20 percent of its heat. To check the seal’s condition, open the oven door and locate the rubber or fiberglass gasket around the perimeter of the door. Feel for any broken, torn, or deformed areas, and close the door to see if you can find any leaks. If you do, replace the seal. 2. Clean or replace dirty range hood or downdraft vent filters. Wash metal-mesh grease filters by hand in soapy water, or run them through the dishwasher. Charcoal or paper filters should not be washed. Replace them instead. 3. Clean stovetop drip bowls. Remove drip bowls from underneath your burner elements and presoak them in a cleaning solution for five minutes. Then hand wash and replace. Remember to clean drip bowls immediately after spills. If spills burn into the bowls, you might need to replace them. 4. Clean coils in your refrigerator. Dirt, dust, and pet hair can clog up refrigerator coils, restricting air flow and causing the refrigerator to work harder to keep cool. Once or twice a year, use a handheld vacuum to clean the coils and suck up any loose particles. The location of refrigerator coils varies by model, but most can be found either behind the kick plate (the front panel near the floor) or at the rear of the fridge. 5. Change your refrigerator water filter. Filters that don’t efficiently remove contaminants and impurities could expose you to harmful water. Instructions for changing the filter vary by model, but most are as easy as turning the filter a quarter inch and popping it out or locking it in place. Perform this simple task every three to six months, www.thenewsyneighbour.com
depending on water usage. 6. Fix rusty dish rack tines. Rust on the tines of your dishwasher racks can adhere to and ruin your dishes and silverware. To solve this issue, purchase a tine repair kit, and use a sealant to adhere the replacement tips over any rusty or chipped tines. Let dry for at least 24 hours before running the dishwasher. 7. Clean and deodorize your garbage disposal. Turn the disposal off and look down the drain for any large, stuck items. Use tongs or another tool--not your hands--to remove blockages. Pour a mixture of ice cubes and salt, or vinegar down the drain. Run cold water over it for 10 seconds, and turn on the unit. To remove odors, place a handful of citrus peels in the disposal, run cold water, and turn it on. 8. Clean your dryer exhaust. Lint in the dryer exhaust not only reduces appliance efficiency, it is a fire hazard. To clean, loosen the clamp and pull the exhaust off the back of the dryer. Remove large clumps of lint from the tubing and the hole in the back with your hands, or if you can’t reach, gently scrape with a straightened coat hanger. Vacuum and reattach. 9. Inspect washing machine hoses. Most washing machine floods are caused by leaks in the hose. Check the hoses that connect to the back panel on your washing machine for any cracks, leaks, or weak spots on the hoses. If you find any deformities, replace the hose. And at minimum, replace the hoses every five years. 10. Clean your air conditioner filter. Clogged or dirty filters restrict air flow, reducing energy efficiency as well as the appliance’s lifespan. As a result, filters should be cleaned every two to four weeks. If a reusable filter is in place, vacuum it to remove as much dirt as possible. Disposable filters can simply be replaced.

Floors…Starting From The Bottom Up! First things first…Choosing a product With an ever expanding selection of flooring products for both residential and commercial use, making an informed decision on what should go down on your floors can sometimes be overwhelming. The key to finding the right product for your project is: • Ask a professional – and give them details on what you want from your flooring – look, durability, functionality, budget • Be open to suggestions – what you have seen in a magazine may not be right for your application and new products or a traditional product may be the answer to your flooring needs • Take advantage of a free estimate and make arrangements for a site visit to your home or your office – sometimes installation isn’t as straightforward as it might seem and this may affect your choice of materials • Remember that not all products are created equally – but quality products are available in a range of price points Getting it down…right! Along with the ever expanding selection of flooring products comes the increasingly technical and diverse methods for installation. How your flooring is installed is as important as what you choose to put on your floor. Experience, technical knowledge, training and warranties are all important things to consider. Some manufacturers require a specifically trained flooring installation mechanic to install their product. Others have strict guidelines as to the installation methods that must be used with their products. All have a bearing on the Page 34

warranties provided. Make sure you get the expert service you need to complete your flooring project. Who covers what? You can ask. Times have changed. Safety, security and liability are front page news. Whether it is a small repair, home renovation or a commercial project, flooring companies, like all other trades, have a duty to provide safety training and safe work environments as well as insure proper liability insurance and WCB coverage is in place for every project. Without proper coverage the customer carries the weight should anything unforeseen happen on a job. Check to see what level of accountability is provided by the company you are going to hire. Home Inspiration… Kitchen Reno We moved into a new–old home in Strathmore this summer and have been working in the yard all summer long, getting it whipped into shape. Just as I was thinking my work was done, I was sitting on my deck and I felt that familiar chill in the air and the dread in my bones that summer is over and winter – blah! – will be here before you know it; which also means time to start working on the inside of our new– old home. I don’t have a huge budget and we are kinda do-it-your-selfers, so I have been surfing the net looking for inspiration. WELL, I’m telling you there are a lot of really great ideas for easy low budget do-it-your-selfers to beautify your home, making it comfy and cozy. Personally, I like the old country look with darker colours and lots of wood.
Home Design

I came across the idea of using wood for a backsplash in the kitchen instead of tile. My husband looked at me sideways when I mentioned the idea but after I showed him the pictures he warmed up to the idea. Talk about adding some character to your kitchen and there are so many different choices. You can run it vertical or horizontal and finish it off with a good varnish or sealer. For your countertops, why not try stone effects? You can replace your kitchen countertops to get an attractive result that has the beauty and elegance of genuine granite and it can be used on a variety of countertop surfaces – including laminated plastic, stone, concrete, tile or wood. The result is an inexpensive alternative to countertop replacement with a finish that is both durable and beautiful. Now the cabinets… we have oak cabinets, which I love, but they are 35 years old and the finish is starting to wear off – imagine that, after only 35 years!! I most certainly do not have the budget to replace them. They are the natural oak colour, which is ok, but I have always preferred the rich dark oak colours. Unfortunately, the important factor involved with a stained and sealed cabinet surface is that it is stained and sealed. There are very few options when attempting to change the appearance of the wood from a light to a dark stained look. You will either have to strip off the finish down to the raw wood or give the impression of that process by way of certain techniques. This is what I learned: Strip off the present finish. This involves using a paintstripping compound to aid in breaking down the top clear coat. The secret is to let the product do its work (follow the instructions). Next, you will sand off the layer of wood that is stained, exposing the new wood below. Now simply stain and apply two coats of polyurethane over the new raw wood. Cabinet Transformations. Rust-Oleum has an awesome product that will completely change the appearance of your cabinets. I find that this product works best over oak. The glaze coat becomes captured inside the wood grain and gives the appearance of a stained surface. There are lots of colour options available. Glaze coat. Professionals usually do this - because it can be a little tricky. After preparing the surface (cleaning and de-glossing), a solvent-based glaze coat is applied over the surface of the wood. The glaze coat varies with each professional. Some will use a colored poly/stain mixture found at a flooring supply provider. This technique is usually applied with a super fine spray tip and with several thin coats until the desired effect is reached. After it has had time to dry – you then apply a coat of polyurethane over the top. ~ Kathryn Hartwell Hope this helps www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Easy ways to create a dream bedroom for your child Just about every child wishes for a dream bedroom, but it takes inspiration to transform four white walls into a fairytale princess room or tree house hideaway. Fortunately, you don’t have to be an interior designer or skilled craftsman to become a hero. A little family compromising, combined with some simple painting techniques, can go a long way in creating a fun, personalized design that kids love and parents can live with over time. Choose kid-friendly colours Paint is one of the easiest and most dramatic ways to transform a room. Start by choosing a colour scheme that appeals to your child’s interests. There’s a wide array of colours and creative design ideas that appeal to kids. The techniques are as endless as your imagination. Try adding whimsical polka dots to a girl’s room, create a checkerboard effect for an avid chess player, or paint a faux race car track that zooms around the bedroom wall, across the floor and back up the wall again, for a young sports enthusiast.
Keep your child’s bedroom beautiful by incorporating storage elements that will blend with your design and help keep the space clutter-free. For example, try adding a bed skirt to hide a couple of slide-out storage containers for organizing anything from small toys to multiple pairs of tennis shoes. Place woven baskets around the room to create attractive storage in plain sight. These organizational elements can work well in rooms for kids of any age. Coordinate colours with patterns The nursery is another room that lends itself to the dreams of both little ones and their parents. One way to create a cohesive design is to match paint colours with the patterns in baby bedding fashions. To round out the baby’s room, try adding rugs, accessories or draperies that pick up the colours used on the walls and in the bedding patterns. Choose bedroom furniture that will endure Select furniture that can transition to a new bedroom design as your child grows older. For example, with just a change of pillows, a nursery rocker can become part of a cozy reading nook later for a grade-schooler who loves to curl up and read alone. Bunk beds that serve as a pretend fort now can become traditional twin beds later. Even a frilly canopy bed can become a grown-up four-poster later by simply removing the canopy framework and fabric cover.
Using instructions and a few simple tools such as painters’ tape, mini-rollers and a tape measure, you can confidently add visual interest and make even a simple room look incredibly special. There are lots of “How-To” videos and articles on the internet. Page 36

I’m sure most of you have heard the expression, ‘your eyes are the window to your soul’. Well, in fact, not only are they the window to our soul, but they are also important indicators of our overall health. What women does not look into the mirror and groan at the sight of bags and dark circles under their eyes, not to mention that skin that seems to be held up by your eyelashes!!! Well, some of these signs can be more than just a late night or not drinking enough water. Dark Circles Under Eyes Some believe that dark circles under the eyes is an indicaPage 38
The Newsy Neighbour
tion that one is not getting adequate sleep, by staying up watching too much T.V. or simply just appear if we misbehave (excessive partying) or are under a great deal of stress. In some other groups, dark circles are believed to be caused as a direct result of too much potassium in the diet; this may be true, but we haven’t seen much evidence on this. Simply speaking, dark circles under your eyes are directly related to oxidizing hemoglobin. In other words, they manifest as a result of “leaky capillaries” and are visible due to the thin skin that covers the area under your eyes. Essentially, what this boils down to is that there is an issue with your liver; it is not working optimally. This may be due in part to genetics, allergies, or iron deficiency – all usually caused by what we are or are not ingesting. “Bags” Under Eyes “Bags” or puffy eyes are usually present as a result of accumulated fat around the eye area. This happens when the septum surrounding the eyeball weakens, causing the outer layer of fat within the socket to sink forward – making it look like you have literal “bags” under your eyes. The underlying cause behind this phenomenon is an issue with your kidneys. Essentially, if your kidneys are not effectively cleaning toxins out of your body, physical signs will begin to manifest themselves, especially in and around the eyes. Some other studies suggest that puffiness is also an indicator of too much salt in the diet. Sunken Eyes This is a common symptom in our society today. It is by no accident that many of us are suffering from it. Sunken eyes are usually the cause of a dehydrated body. Many are ingesting several coffees, pop/soda, or pre-packaged fruit juices daily, without even knowing that each of these ‘beverages’ have a diuretic effect and are severely dehydrating. Couple this with drinking little water, you have a body that is starved of water, and thus it is unable to function properly. By increasing your intake of water and decreasing the amount of diuretic beverages you drink in a day, it is almost guaranteed that you will see positive results immediately. Yellow Eyes This manifests itself when the white of your eye (sclera) turns yellow. This is usually a sign of jaundice, where there is a build-up of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow-coloured pigment that is produced by the breakdown of old red blood cells. Bilirubin is normally processed by the liver and released into the intestine in bile before being excreted from the body through the feces. As you have probably guessed it, the common cause of yellow eye is directly related to a liver problem. A daily dose of fresh squeezed beet or lemon juice should help resolve the discolouration in a few weeks. Bulging Eyes Also known as proptosis or exophthalmos, bulging of the eyes manifests itself due to a condition with the thyroid gland. Both eyes generally protrude in people who have Graves disease (an autoimmune disease indicating an overactive thyroid).

www.thenewsyneighbour.
In Graves disease, swelling, fibrosis and scarring may occur within the eye muscles surrounding the eye. This crowds the bony orbit where the eye sits, causing the eyes to bulge forward. In some rare cases however, it may mean that there is a benign tumor that exists behind the eye. Blood Vessels Your eyes are one of the few areas of the body that have exposed blood vessels. For this reason, these blood vessels can tell us a lot about the individual’s health. In some cases, inflamed blood vessels in your eye can be the direct result of an irritant, allergy, or in some cases a viral infection. In other cases however, it has been shown that a continued state of inflamed blood vessels can be directly related to more serious issues such as hypertension or diabetes. Heading for a Heart Attack A white ring around the iris, the coloured part of your eye, is a cardiac warning sign. It is called corneal arcus and can indicate a build-up of cholesterol, which is a leading cause of cardiac disease and heart attacks. Although the rings become more commonplace with age, if you develop it before the age of 60 you should ask your doctor for a cholesterol test. Disappearing eyebrows When the outer third of your eyebrow starts to disappear on its own, this is a common sign of thyroid disease. Burning eyes, blurry vision while using a computer This is the result of “computer vision syndrome” (CVS). The eyestrain is partly caused by the lack of contrast on a computer screen, and the extra work involved in focusing on pixels. Sudden double vision, dim vision, or loss of vision These are the visual warning signs of stroke. As you can see, the eyes provide us with many indicators about our health. When you are suffering from a health related issue, take a look in the mirror, and determine whether or not you can pinpoint the problem by gazing into your eyes. These are but a few examples of what we can look for when trying to figure out some of the issues we are experiencing with our eyes. ~ Kathryn Hartwell

Women from all around the world have all kinds of different beauty tricks and tips. Chinese women have a few – they have such fair, flawless, and beautiful skin; and how about their eyebrows? I would pay good money to have the perfect eyebrow; mine are looking a little sketchy these days. Here are a few of their beauty tips:
Forget Dieting, Drink Tea The Chinese swear by the anti-aging and weight loss effects of white, green and oolong tea. We can learn from them: it’s delicious, full of health benefits and will keep our hands warm when it’s cold out.

Massage doesn’t just feel great -- it helps the skin by increasing blood flow, aiding in lymphatic drainage, detoxifying and speeding the healing process in all systems of the body.
Even Your Skin Tone Chinese women value smooth complexions, and skin-tone evening products are very popular. You can try this on your own with a great highlighter. Try a light pink or even an alabaster white -- it really makes big difference to the face!
The Hues of Plum While skin is perfect and porcelain, colour is huge in China. They use plum hues with red, brown and mauve undertones that speak volumes on the lips.

Here is a simple step-by-step list that will help you get to your final goal before you know it: Step One: Tell everyone about your goal. Own it! Set small daily and weekly goals. Step Two: Write it down. Start a journal. Recording your food, how you feel, and workouts help you track your progress. Step Three: Make a plan. Planning meals and workouts make it easier to stay on track. Step Four: Schedule for success. Make time for work outs, food preparation and rest. Proper sleep and diet is extremely important for repairing muscles and helping burn fat. Step Five: Get a work-out buddy, hire a trainer or coach, sign up for a challenge. You are less likely to miss a workout when you have a friend or coach waiting on you. These five steps are very simple, but very effective when followed. Setting small daily and weekly goals have an accumulative effect, making the final goal seem effortless. Cheers to your health! ~ Anndee Page 42

22 Uses For Vaseline Vaseline, also known as petroleum jelly, is a beauty staple that every girl should have in their makeup bag. There are so many of uses for it and it is so inexpensive! Here’s some beauty-related tricks you can do with Vaseline: 1. Lip balm: moisturizes and soothes chapped lips, but it doesn’t taste good. 2. Moisturizes dry skin. 3. Hand and feet moisturizer: it hydrates and smooth’s chapped hands and feet. Apply some petroleum jelly to your hands and feet and then put on mittens and socks. Wait about 10-15 minutes for the Vaseline to soak into the skin. The result? Smoother and softer skin. 4. All-over moisturiser: apply petroleum jelly all over your body after a bath. It will leave your skin soft and smooth. 5. Eye makeup remover: removes even the most stubborn mascara and soothes the eye area. 6. Scrub: mix petroleum jelly with sea salt to make your own scrub. 7. Night cream: it can be used as a night cream but you need to warm it up first. 8. Protects manicure: putting some Vaseline on the base of your nails will stop the colour from running. 9. Shaving: just put a very thin layer on the area that needs shaving and shave. Don’t use water. Also, don’t apply too much product or it will plug up your razor. In addition, Vaseline can get a bit greasy, but it will leave your skin soft, smooth and moisturized.

10. Highlighter: apply it on cheeks and under eye area for that dewy look. 11. Softens elbows: apply some Vaseline to elbows daily. It will soften them. 12. Lip-gloss: apply some lip liner all over your lips and top it off with Vaseline for instant shine. 13. Maintains fragrance longer: apply a thin layer of Vaseline on your wrist before spraying perfume on. It will make the scent last longer. 14. Lip exfoliate: apply petroleum jelly to your lips and wait a few minutes. Then, using an old toothbrush, scrub your lips. This will exfoliate lips, leaving them very soft. 15. Protects skin from hair dye: apply some Vaseline around the hairline before colouring your hair to protect your skin from the harsh chemicals contained in the dye. 16. Conditioner: Apply some to the scalp before shampooing to condition it. 17. Seals in split ends: if you put some Vaseline on your split ends, it will seal them in and make it look like they aren’t there. But don’t do this too often as it will take a couple of shampoos to remove Vaseline from your hair. 18. Cream blusher: mix some Vaseline with your lipstick to make your own cream blusher. 19. Prevents uneven tanning: just put some on dry spots before applying fake tanning lotions. 20. Moisturize and tame eyebrows: putting a small amount of Vaseline on your brows before going to bed will not only moisturize them, but it will mould them into place too. 21. Prevents chafing: just apply some Vaseline on the areas that need it, such as heels and the balls of feet. 22. Stains remover: it removes makeup stains from clothes. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
Classic Shaggy Dog Story - No Dogs Involved! A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner. The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, ‘If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?’ ‘No, I had to stop drinking years ago,’ the homeless man replied. ‘Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?’ the man asked. ‘No, I don’t waste time fishing,’ the homeless man said. ‘I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive.’ ‘Will you spend this on greens fees at a golf course instead of food?’ the man asked. ‘Are you NUTS!’ replied the homeless man. ‘I haven’t played golf in 20 years!’ ‘Will you spend the money on a woman in the red light district instead of food?’ the man asked. ‘What disease would I get for ten lousy bucks?’ exclaimed the homeless man. ‘Well,’ said the man, ‘I’m not going to give you the money. Instead, I’m going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife.’ The homeless man was astounded. ‘Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know I’m dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting.’ The man replied, ‘That’s okay. It’s important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up beer, fishing, golf, and women.’ The Newsy Neighbour

Cow on the Tracks
A passenger train is creeping along, slowly. Finally it creaks to a halt. A passenger sees a conductor walking by outside. “What’s going on?” she yells out the window. “Cow on the track!” replies the conductor. Ten minutes later, the train resumes its slow pace. Within five minutes, however, it stops again. The woman sees the same conductor walk again. She leans out the window and yells, “What happened? Did we catch up with the cow again?”

The Pouty Puppy -Bauer They took me for a walk today. FINALLY. The hot sun makes me pant and I kept stopping to sit under trees, so they stopped taking me for midday walks in the sun. I am not impressed. Even if I don’t like the sun, I still like my walks! HELLO! Today we walked along the canal. Mommy just kept yelling and yelling at me. It sounded like “Come here!” but I couldn’t hear her. I was much too far away. I was staring into a black hole in the ground. I could hear some sort of squeak come from some sort of animal and I KNEW I had to play with it. So I pounced and stared into the hole. I couldn’t see anything though. Mommy started yelling at me again. Why doesn’t she understand that I am standing here veeeerrrrryyyyyy quietly, trying to find out where that squeak came from? She needs to stop yelling! I am trying to solve a mystery! Finally, I look up and I see them. About 3,000 little brown figures standing up staring at me. Our eyes meet. We all look at each other, as if to say, “What the-?” Then it happened. It was faster than a hungry puppy eating breakfast. I was a lightning bolt, sent to this earth to be The Delta Ninja. I AM The Delta Ninja! I ran as fast as I could. No one could see me, I was running so fast. And fierce. I am fast and fierce – don’t ever forget that. I ran to each and every single black hole that these little brown fellas ran into. Scaredy cats. I don’t blame them for being scared though – anyone would be scared of The Delta Ninja. For some reason, I never catch one of these little brown rats. They are so fast! I finally get to the last black hole, and something catches my eye so I look behind me – and there they all are!! They’re taunting me… teasing me. They are mean. I can feel the fire burning inside of me. I take off, showing them my awesome Kung-Fu moves. Mommy kept yelling at me, though. She keeps ruining my fun. They are now walking back towards me. GO AWAY! Don’t they know their approach ruins my plans? I was thisclose to catching one of these little brown men. I was going to question him – find out what they’re doing and what is in these black holes. And why are there so many of them? I suspect they are an army, sent here to take over the world. And it is up to me – The Delta Ninja – to save the Earth. But instead, Mommy put me on a leash and made me walk with her down the canal. What utter humiliation and disrespect. If this little brown army takes over, it’s all HER fault. But don’t worry – I will come back one day soon and finish this war and save Earth. The Delta Ninja is on duty. B

From one of our readers. About Pet Birds... I loved reading the article in the Pets Feature Section (August 2012 Issue 58) about pet birds as a good choice instead of something furry. Pet birds are very underrated. I am a bird owner and have been since my teen years; I’m now in my 50’s. Birds are fantastic pets! The points that were listed in the article are very good. I really like the fact that pelleted food is touted over seed. However, I would like to see a follow-up article encouraging people to do their homework before deciding on which bird is the right one for them. There are so many different things to look at if one is going to have a bird companion. Size: Depending on the space you have in your home, bird and cage size must be taken into consideration. If you have a small apartment, a large parrot and cage will probably take up most of your living space. A smaller bird such as a budgie or parrotlet might be better, or perhaps a couple of canaries. Mess: The bigger the bird, the bigger the mess. A larger parrot can produce pretty big droppings, where a smaller parrot, such as a budgie or lovebird, will produce much smaller ones. Bird droppings tend to dry extremely hard. We call this ‘bird cement’ and can be very hard to remove from some surfaces. Some birds are also very dusty. This can cause respiratory problems for people with allergies and asthma. I know I cannot have a bird that is dusty. Some birds that produce a lot of dust are cockatoos, cockatiels, doves, and African grey parrots. Depending on what a bird is being fed, the mess from tossed food can be pretty overwhelming. I had a lovebird that used to make soup of her pelleted food and then shake it all over the place, which was very hard to clean up. Not to mention the fresh fruits and veggies stuck to the walls and ceiling!

an afternoon serenade by a bird that might think it is singing when it sounds like screeching. Interaction: Does someone want a bird that is interactive or just attractive? A cage full of finches are beautiful and fun to watch but still need the same care as a bird that will come out of its cage. Most parrots will need lots of interaction to keep them from being bored and perhaps feather-picking. These are just a few of the things that come to mind after reading the article you printed. There are a lot more things to take into account. It’s important that research be done before adopting any pet; but to me, birds are very special and all their needs, as well as the owner, should be taken into consideration. I love your magazine and look forward to when it shows up on my doorstep. Thanks for letting me add my two cents worth!
Noise: This doesn’t depend on the size of the bird. If someone is not into loud noises, careful consideration should be paid to this. There are small birds that can create a huge bird noise and some larger ones that Regards, are fairly quiet. Ones neighbours might not care for Melanie Harwood Pets www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Trees Trees have a yearly cycle. They lose water all winter long. Calgary is hard on our trees, being in the heart of Chinook country. As soon as the frost leaves the ground, you should start watering 1 -2 inches every 2 weeks. If you do not have a rain gauge, try using a measuring cup to find out how long it takes to water. Do not forget to measure the rain and then water or skip accordingly. Some people use a Frisbee. In Calgary, you should water until the first week in October. Then give the trees a good “soaking” to get ready for winter; probably twice what you normally water. Then leave the trees alone. Let them get ready for winter. It is important not to water after mid October. It may cause damage to the trees. They need time to adjust to the climate changes and get ready for their dormancy.
start to water, make sure to keep the tree well watered, depending on the specific soil you have. Your trees need more water than the grass. Every couple of weeks when you are out working in your garden or just enjoying the patio area, let the hose trickle into the tree wells. If you water deeply and infrequently you will promote deep root growth. This makes for healthier more drought-resistant trees. If possible, direct the water from your down spout to the trees. No sense in wasting water! During mid-September to mid-October, you can harden off the more mature trees by watering them sparingly. In late October, give them a good soaking just before you are ready to shut off your outside taps. During the winter, you can keep throwing snow over the roots and around the base of the trees. New trees should not be pruned for a couple of years. Fertilizing is good for the first few years. Spikes are not recommended; they do not break down uniformly, and may burn the fine root hairs where they are inserted. Mulching is important. Put a layer of mulch around your new tree. Wood-chip bark is best. Mulch holds in moisture, slows weed growth, keeps soil temperature even, helps to keep the grass from growing around the base of tree, adds organic matter to your soil, and helps stop surface roots from being exposed when first watered. Use about 4-5 inches of mulch.
There is no sense to watering in the winter. The ground is frozen and any water will just stay on the surface and freeze. The roots will never get any of the water even with the Chinooks. It is better to wait for spring and all the frost is out of the ground. That way you will not “fool” your trees into thinking spring has come too early. It is best to water your trees with a heavy, long single soak. This way, the grass will get its water and the rest of the water will go below the grass roots to the roots of the tree. The best time to water is early morning or late at night. If that is not possible, it is still important to water, especially if the temperature is in the high 20’s or 30’s. Even though Calgary’s climate is dry and we have a lot of clay in our soil, it is still possible to drown the trees. The most important part of tree care is watering. As with most plants watering, too much or too little causes 80% of tree related problems. When planting new trees, let them sit for 48 hours after planting before watering. This will allow the tips of the fine root hairs to harden before being submerged in water. When you Page 46

Area 51 You've all heard of the Air Force's ultra-high-security, super-secret base in Nevada, known simply as "Area 51?" Well, late one afternoon, the Air Force folks out at Area 51 were very surprised to see a Cessna landing at their "secret" base. They immediately impounded the aircraft and hauled the pilot into an interrogation room. The pilot's story was that he took off from Vegas, got lost, and spotted the base just as he was about to run out of fuel. The Air Force started a full FBI background check on the pilot and held him overnight during the investigation. By the next day, they were finally convinced that the pilot really was lost and wasn't a spy. They gassed up his airplane, gave him a terrifying "you-did-not-see-a-base" briefing, complete with threats of spending the rest of his life in prison, told him Vegas was that-a-way on such-andsuch a heading, and sent him on his way. The next day, to the total disbelief of the Air Force, the same Cessna showed up again. Once again, the MP's surrounded the plane... only this time there were two people in the plane. The same pilot jumped out and said, "Do anything you want to me, but my wife is in the plane and you have to tell her where I was last night!"

A lady walks into a drug store and tells the pharmacist she needs some cyanide. The pharmacist said, “Why in the world do you need cyanide?”

I’ll lose my license, they’ll throw both of us in jail and all kinds of bad things will happen! Popcorn anyone? OK, so really… who does not love popcorn? Like, really?! I have been putting garlic salt on popcorn for years… and Parmesan cheese… and that Kraft sprinkle cheddar cheese. You don’t have to spend extra money buying those popcorn seasonings they sell in the grocery store (and they do have preservatives in them), which I am allergic to. Like, why not make your own? And it’s fun – just use your imagination! There are tons of different things you can put on popcorn. How about: Garlic salt, Parmesan cheese, Thyme, Cumin, Oregano Dry taco seasoning mix, Dry ranch-style seasoning mix Lemon pepper, Italian herbs: oregano, basil, marjoram, thyme, and crushed rosemary. French herbs: marjoram, thyme, summer savory, basil, rosemary, sage, and fennel. Cinnamon, brown sugar, nutmeg. Just spray with a little cooking spray first, or be bad like me and slather with melted butter then add your seasonings. OR – add a little spice to your life and try one of these truly luscious recipes.
Put popcorn and seasoned assorted snacks in a large bowl. Pour butter/soy mixture over popped mixture and toss. Sprinkle with bacon-onion mix dip and toss again. Spread on a jellyroll pan and bake in a 350-degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring once. You’re going to like this!
Caramel Almond Popcorn Clusters 10 Cups freshly popped popcorn 2 Cups whole almonds 1 Cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1/2 Cup butter or margarine 1/4 Cup light corn syrup 2 tsp vanilla 1 tsp almond extract 1/2 tsp baking soda Preheat oven to 225 degrees. Spray 15 x 10 baking sheet with non-stick spray. Mix popcorn and almonds in large bowl. Combine brown sugar, butter and corn syrup in medium saucepan. Over low heat, stir mixture until sugar dissolves. Increase heat to high and boil 5 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla, almond extract and baking soda.Pour over popcorn and almonds, immediately stirring gently to coat. Pour mixture onto prepared baking sheet, spreading evenly. Bake 1 hour then cool completely. Break into pieces and store in airtight container. Need I say more? Popcorn for supper – why not? At this moment, it sounds like a luscious idea. ~ Kathryn Hartwell

Dear Lifelines, I am having trouble with my parents. I am a female young adult and I feel they don’t want to let me grow up. What do I do?? Sincerely, Child at heart Dear Child at Heart, It sounds like you are feeling a little frustrated with the involvement that your parents are having in your life right now. As we change through various roles in our lives (child, student, adolescent, employee, adult, parent…etc.) it can be challenge not only for us, but for the people around us as well - such as your parents, in this case. Although you haven’t shared the specific details of the challenges you are facing, it might help to know that your parents are going through some major transitions themselves as you venture out on your own. They need to come to terms with their rapidly changing world as you make your way into the workforce, perhaps leaving your family home and maybe even attending school in some far-off city. Perhaps they have been largely responsible for you financially, for providing you with a place to live, meals and transportation. If you have just moved out and they no longer need to support you in these ways as you become more and more independent, this can be quite an adjustment for them. They might even feel unnecessary, at loose ends and unsure about the new direction of their role as parents. Eventually they will redefine their roles and start exploring other ways to support you and to enrich their own individual lives by travelling, going back to school, pursuing hobbies, taking on more work or even downsizing into a smaller home. In order to assist them in transitioning with less fear of being abandoned, there might be a few things that you can do! You might consider making a lunch or supper date with one Page 50
The Newsy Neighbour
or both of your parents on a regular basis. This way you can keep them updated with your life as much or as little as you want, but they will know that you are still a part of their lives. As well, you can call them regularly and even think about asking them for advice about different concerns that come up for you. There are videoconferencing options that you can use as well if you so choose to personalize the contact even more. Another idea is to reinforce your plans whenever you leave them - tell them you look forward to lunch on Tuesday or the phone call on Sunday or whenever you can regularly work them into your schedule as a priority. Hopefully with a few minor adjustments your parents will be able to let go as they see that you are still part of the family and that as you assume this new adult role, you will continue to be involved in their lives and will always be their daughter. Happy Lunching! Lifelines

On the Move ... and Renovating Everyone has a different reason for wanting to renovate. Maybe the design magazines have you dreaming of an updated look for your current space, or maybe the hot water tank flooded the basement so you need to renovate... or, maybe it’s time to move! Are you getting ready to trade up? Then it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get your house (or condo) ready for the resale market. Here are some dos and don’ts to help you get the best price for your home and ensure your big flip isn’t a flop. DO Paint. It’s one of the cheapest and easiest things you can do, and also the most effective. A dingy or scuffed wall definitely needs repainting, but even walls in good condition can use a new paint job if they’re currently an unusual colour. Neutral tones like white, cream or sandy taupe and current light warm greys will appeal to the largest group of potential buyers. DONT do any major renovations. Don’t get me wrong; a brand new kitchen or bathroom is awesome and necessary the longer we live in a home, but don’t do a major renovation just to sell your home. Sure, you need to do some fast facelifts to get your home looking as clean, bright, current and spacious as possible, but Page 52
The Newsy Neighbour
403-361-9838
don’t spend big bucks hoping to make even bigger bucks. Your goal is to get your home looking as neutral a canvas as possible so the greatest number of potential buyers will want it. Think one-day makeovers, weekend projects and simple fixes -- not dream renovations. DO spend budget wisely. Kitchens and Bathrooms are your primary focus when doing a renovation to sell your home. Spend the most of your flip budget on kitchen and bath. DO hire a pro. There is a lot to consider when renovating costs, budgets, new products, permits, etc. The advice of a professional can go a long way in saving you money and time. Several local builders and renovation experts can help. Talk to them before starting your renovation plans. DO make a great first impression. Make sure the first look potential buyer’s get of your front walk wows them. Repaint your front door and porch and replace a dingy mailbox or tarnished door hardware with newer models. If your porch light is out of date or ho-hum, replace it -- a stylish light costs under $100 and can make a huge impact. Power wash the front of your home. Get rid of cobwebs, and clean up the landscaping. Cleaning up is cheap and really adds to the appeal of every home. ~Hayley Poirier-Realtor I Have You...On The Move

Mortgage Rules Change Once Again For those of you not aware, as of July 9th, the Department of Finance implemented additional changes to the mortgage qualifying process. These new rules are further impacting the insured mortgage products (in particular, those people buying a home with less than a twenty percent down payment) that are available to Canadians, as well as their ability to obtain mortgage financing. As of now, clients purchasing a home and having a down payment less than twenty percent of the purchase price are required to qualify for mortgage financing with a maximum amortization of 25 years, which is reduced from 30 years. As for existing home owners wishing to use the equity in their home for whatever purpose (debt consolidation, lower their existing mortgage rate, purchase a vehicle, etc.) are now only able to refinance up to 80% of the value of their home (reduced from 85%). Finally, for those clients looking to purchase a home with a purchase price of a million dollars or more, they will have to put 20% of the purchase price towards the down payment, as million dollar homes are no www.thenewsyneighbour.com

With all of the recent changes that the mortgage industry has seen, as a mortgage broker, I am still able to assist those clients who are unable to come up with the standard five percent down payment by offering them the option of the Free Down Payment Program. However, this program will only be available until October 31st of this year. At the time of this article, I am able to obtain for those clients with very good credit history a rate of 5.24% on this product for a 5 year term. For those clients who are able to arrange the minimum down payment via their own resources (savings, RRSP’s, etc.) or through a gift from an immediate family member, I am currently able to offer rates as low as 3.09% fixed on a 5 year term. Once again, this rate offering is based on the overall strength of the client’s application and is subject to change at any time due to changes in the bond market, so I recommend contacting me at anytime in order to get the most up to date information available. As always, I welcome any questions or comments you may have regarding the information contained in my articles. Until next month…this has been a mortgage moment with the Mortgage Mogul.

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, Derek Donais

Ferral’s Deathmarch Army: Book Two of the Erinia Saga Tod Langley Wheatmark, 2011 Fantasy, 303 pages ISBN: 9781604945218
The second book of the Erinia Saga finds King Kristian and Mikhal, his cavalier
guardian, on the run from evil sorcerer Ferral’s human and once-human armies. Kristian’s kingdom lies shattered and its people scattered, both results of their newly-crowned king’s rash choices and lack of sound judgement. In his vain desire to rescue his betrothed, Allisia, from imprisonment, Kristian rushed to engage Ferral’s forces and the consequences were disastrous. With no army and no real plan other than survival, Kristian and Mikhal flee before the dark sorcerer’s undead host. In their desperate journey, they encounter two distant kingdoms locked in an ancient feud. The first is the kingdom of the Holtsmen, tough and industrious people who have so far been untouched by the conflict that destroyed Kristian’s homeland. The second realm belongs to the Atlunam, an aloof people who are mistrustful of outsiders. With the latter is rumoured to be knowledge that is crucial to any hope of defeating Ferral. Central to this main storyline is a lesson about human nature and our petty differences. The differences between these two kingdoms have grown through ignorance and prejudice, breeding widespread hatred and fear of one another. This hatred and fear threatens the existence of many, even those not directly involved, especially when the keys to ultimate survival are compassion, forgiveness and unity of purpose. Can the Holtsmen and the Atlunam abandon their longstanding grievances? Will either of these two proud and passionate nations rally to Kristian’s cause? Or will their mutual loathing condemn them to suffer the same fate as the young king’s people? Another bright spot in this novel is Langley’s development of secondary characters, in which he builds on important and intriguing subplots established in book one. Mikhal becomes further aware of a link to a dark past that he does not yet understand. Cairn, the expert swordsman, continues on his quest for vengeance—and begins to realize that vengeance alone may never be enough. Finally, Allisia, still a prisoner in Ferral’s cruel grasp, is presented with a special message of faith and hope. With Ferral’s Deathmarch Army, Langley has delivered a compelling and thrilling continuation of his story, one that leads the reader to hope for a sooner-than-later release of book three. Page 56

Been racking my brain on funny stories to tell to try to win Sylvia Browne tickets and one thing comes to mind. I remember posting it on Facebook with tears in my eyes from laughing. This happened, I believe, shortly before Christmas last year. After a bad surprise snowfall and sheer ice, my daughter decided to tell me her boots don’t fit. So I had her wear my boots as we are same size. I still had my summer shoes (no grip at all). Picture this: I take the kiddos to school in the van, open my door and step out. I went down… down under the van! My butt hit the ground but I was holding on (not sure why) to the floor of the van for dear life. Cars going by and cars parked (people inside probably laughing their butts off!). It took me about 30 seconds, but felt like 10 minutes to get up - my feet kept slipping as I tried to get back up and I wouldn’t let go of the van! Finally, after pulling myself up holding onto van still, I managed to get back in safely. After getting in the van my son said, “Mom where’d you go? One minute you were there and then you disappeared!” On my way home I was in tears from laughing so hard, just picturing how I looked to everyone... My one leg had a long black long (I think I hit my leg on the van door or something on the way down!). But other than that, I was fine. Thanks for having me post a story, win or not, it brought back a funny memory for me! :P -Melissa - CONTEST WINNER!
