After receiving The Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Award for Best Bakery in 2016, I spoke with The Newsy Neighbour staff to thank them for what they did for my small business – creating local awareness and increased traffic. It still sounds rehearsed, and I wish people could hear what I say about it – the emotion [ just] comes out. [It] was a heartfelt thank you because you had no idea what you did for me as a small business. It meant so much to me that so many people came in to check out My Bakery Shop and then vote for us! ~ My Bakery Shop, Langdon

I AM A POTATO

HISTORY

My name is Petula Potato. I know I’m a bit lumpy – I lack the slim lines of the carrot or the sexy smoothness of the eggplant – but looks aren’t everything, are they? Carrots and eggplants are all very well and good, but I happen to be one of the most important food staples in the world. The only crops larger are rice, wheat, and maize. Not bad for a bulbous tuber from the Andes! We belong to the Solanaceae or nightshade family, so we’re related toand theOperated, tomato, Chestermere’s Longest Running, Locally Owned, eggplant, various peppers, tomatillos. While some people think we originated in Ireland of all places, they’re wrong. We’re native to the Western Hemisphere – wild potato species occur throughout the Americas, from the USA to Uruguay. Scientists originally believed we were domesticated independently in multiple locations. Genetic testing has cleared up that little misconception – it turns out there’s a single point of potato origin, and it’s in present-day southern Peru, where we were domesticated 7,000 – 10,000 years ago. The Spanish exported more than gold and silver back to Europe when they conquered the Inca Empire. They also brought potatoes back with them in the latter half of the 16th century. Stubborn European farmers were slow to adopt us (although some peasants favoured us over above-ground grains, because we were less likely to be pillaged by the marauding armies that swept over the continent, time after time), but by the time the 19th century rolled around, we’d become a staple across the continent – it’s hard to imagine Europe’s population could have grown as quickly as it did without our help. In fact, farmers in western Ireland became so dependent on us that when blight hit their potato crops in 1845, the Great Irish Famine resulted. The problem, it turns out, was that so few varieties of potato had been introduced in Europe that they were easy targets for disease. Meanwhile back in the Andes, thousands of potato varieties persist – over a hundred varieties might be found in a single valley, and a lone farmer might raise a dozen or more. Genetic diversity is important! The annual diet of an average global citizen in the first decade of the 21st century includes about 73 lb. or 33 kg of potatoes. We remain an essential crop in various parts of the globe, especially central and eastern Europe, where per capita potato production The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

HEALTH

We contain lots of vitamins and minerals, as well as an assortment of phytochemicals, including carotenoids and natural phenols. A medium-sized potato with its skin provides 45% of the amount of vitamin C recommended daily, 18% of the recommended daily dose of potassium, as well as vitamin B6, thiamin, riboflavin, folate, niacin, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, and zinc. Our fibre content is equivalent to that of many whole grain breads, pastas, and cereals. We’re starchy (not stuffy – unless, of course, you decide to stuff us!), which provides bulk and offers protection from colon cancer, improves glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, lowers plasma cholesterol, and may even reduce fat storage. Cooking, then cooling potatoes significantly increases our starch content, so keep that in mind next time you use us in the kitchen. We can, of course, be prepared in many, many ways – skinned or peeled, whole or cut-up, with seasonings or without – one of the reasons we’re so popular. Feel free to try some of these yummy potato recipes – enjoy!

HORSERADISH GLAZED MASHED POTATOES 8 cups (1920mL), cooked and mashed ¼ cup (60mL) hot milk 1 tsp (5mL) salt 1 cup (240mL) sour cream 2 tbsp (30mL) butter ¼ cup (60mL) chopped green onion To potatoes, add sour cream, butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Using low-speed electric mixer, beat mixture until just smooth. Stir in green onion. Spoon in a greased shallow baking dish. Spread horseradish glaze (see below) over potato mixture. Bake uncovered at 350°F for 45 – 50 minutes or until lightly browned and heated through.

Horseradish Glaze

1/3 cup (80mL) mayonnaise 2 tbsp (30mL) prepared horseradish ¼ tsp (1.25mL) ground pepper ¼ cup (60mL) sour cream 1 tbsp (15mL) chopped green onion Combine all ingredients. Blend well.

All the best,

Petula Potato

BEST POTATO SALAD 4 cups (960 mL) potatoes, cooked, peeled and cubed (about 6 or 7 whole potatoes) 1 cup (240 mL) Miracle Whip or mayonnaise 1 tsp (5 mL) mustard ½ tsp (2.5 mL) celery seeds ½ tsp (2.5 mL) salt 1/8 tsp (.5 mL) pepper 2 hard boiled eggs, chopped ½ cup (120 mL) onion, chopped ½ cup (120 mL) celery, finely chopped ½ cup (120 mL) sweet pickles, finely chopped Boil potatoes whole, with the skins on, in salted water for about 15 to 20 minutes until they are tender in the middle when pricked with a fork. Do not over-boil or the salad will be mushy. Cool the potatoes a bit, then peel them, cut them into cubes and place in a large bowl. In a separate smaller bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, celery seeds, salt, and pepper. Mix well. Add the chopped eggs, onion, celery, and pickles and mix together to combine. Pour dressing over the cubed potatoes and mix lightly so as not to break up the potatoes too much. Cover and chill until time to serve.

FACTS Since potatoes contain significant amounts of carbohydrates, they are easy to digest and facilitate digestion. This makes them an excellent food source for patients, babies, and those who cannot digest hard food but need energy. Can potatoes make you smart? Proper brain function depends largely on glucose levels, oxygen supply, the presence of certain B complex vitamins, and various hormones, amino acids, and fatty acids (like omega-3). Potatoes provide most of these essential components.

PATIO

LANGDON A single medium-sized potato contains about 620 mg of potassium – that's more than a banana. Potassium helps ensure optimal muscle performance, and improves nerve response to stimulation. Iron, essential in helping the body convert food to energy as well as resist infection, is also present in potatoes. Potatoes contain no fat or cholesterol, and minimal sodium. Their skins contain dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and provide most of the potato’s flavor. A six-ounce potato contains 2 grams of highly digestible protein, almost as much as half a glass of milk.

A medium-sized potato contains 45% of the daily recommended value for vitamin C. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Beer Culture Social Context

Many social traditions and activities are very associated with drinking beer, such as playing cards, darts, or other games. The consumption of beer in isolation and excess may be associated with people drinking away their troubles, while drinking in excess with company may be associated with binge drinking.

Around the world

All over the world, beer is consumed. There are several breweries in the Middle East countries as well, such as Iraq and Syria. There are also breweries in African countries and other remote countries such as Mongolia, as well.

Glassware serving

Getting an appropriate beer glass is considered desirable by some drinkers. There are some drinkers of beer that may sometimes drink out of the bottle or can, while others may choose to pour their beer into a glass. If a drinker wishes to appreciate the aroma of a beer, the beer is first poured into a mug, glass, or stein. Similar to wine, there is specialized styles of glasses for some types of beer, with some breweries producing glassware intended for their own styles of beer.

Temperature

The conditions for serving beer have a big influence on a drinker's experiences. An important factor when drinking is the temperature - as colder temperatures will start to inhibit the chemical senses of the tongue and throat, which will narrow down the flavour profile of beer, allow certain lagers to release their crispness.

Dear Noah, We could have sworn you said the ark wasn't leaving till 5. Sincerely, Unicorns

Pouring

The process of pouring will have an influence on the presentation of beer. The flow rate from the tap, tilting of the glass, and position of the pour into the glass will all affect the outcome, such as the size and longevity of the head and the turbulence of the bar as it begins to release the carbonation. The more heavily carbonated beers such as German pilsner’s will need settling time before they are served, although many of them are served with the addition of the remaining yeast at the bottom to add extra colour and flavour.

For Reservations Call 1-866-901-0099

Beer rating

The rating of beer is a craze that combines the enjoyment of drinking beer with the hobby of collecting it. Those that drink beer sometimes tend to record their scores and comments on various internet websites. This is a worldwide activity, as people in the United States will swap bottles of beer with those living in New Zealand and Russia. The scores may then be tallied together to create lists of the most popular beers in each country as well as those throughout the world.

My Favourite - Fabulous - Fantastic and Fun Stuff I have never ever understood the huge line-ups at Tim Hortons in the morning, but then again, I have never been much of a coffee person. Truthfully, the

only time I ever even drink coffee is when we are camping. There is nothing like enjoying a fabulous brewed cup of java while sitting outside under the trees (with maybe a splash of something special added) but, only while camping. So, for me to criticize all those who line up for their morning cup of brew is truly unfair of me. BUT, maybe I have been missing out on something fantastic and never knew it. There might be a reason all those happy coffee drinkers line up in the morning for a cup. It seems that it can turn a morning frown into a smile. The health effects of coffee are quite controversial. Depending on who you ask, it is either a super healthy beverage or incredibly harmful. But despite what you may have heard, there are plenty of good things to be said about coffee. For example, it is high in antioxidants and linked to a reduced risk of many diseases. However, it also contains caffeine, a stimulant that can cause problems in some people and disrupt sleep. There’s growing evidence that coffee boosts dopamine production in the brain. One study found that women who drank four or more cups of coffee every day were 20 percent less likely to suffer from depression! And, as crazy as it sounds, people who drink a lot of coffee are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than people who drink smaller amounts, or no coffee at all. According to Harvard Medical School, this is because it contains ingredients that lower blood sugar. It isn’t known which ingredient causes this effect. Because the effects can be stronger with decaffeinated coffee, it’s probably not the caffeine. They suggest that it’s the antioxidants, and the brewing method. Who would have thought such a thing? They now say that two or more cups of coffee each day could protect against heart failure. Researchers found that people who drank four cups of coffee each day had an 11 percent lower risk. But how well do they sleep, is my big question? Drinking larger intakes of coffee, as well as of green tea, can lower most people’s risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. Interestingly, this tends to be truer for women than men. Ok, so maybe I will start drinking coffee because, believe it or not, it has been linked to a 50 percent reduced risk of liver cancer, especially if you are a man. This is thought to be partially because coffee stops the expression of genes that cause inflammation, especially in the liver. The two substances kahweol and cafestol in coffee may be protective against other cancers such as breast, colon, and rectal cancer! I think I never jumped on the coffee bandwagon because if I drank it later in the day I was up all-night buzzing and it gave me jumpy legs. Like everything, there is a down side and once again research has tied drinking large amounts of unfiltered coffee like espresso to increased cholesterol levels, most likely due to the cafestol. I think I am just one of those people who is sensitive to caffeine, and I may not be jumping on the coffee bandwagon too soon. Maybe a little bit at a time because other studies have shown that it can bring unpleasant side effects like anxiousness, nausea, and headaches (that’s me). Whew, who has time for all these studies?!

This is where it gets a little weird for me; the average person who eats a typical western diet actually gets more antioxidants from coffee than fruits and vegetables combined and a typical 8 oz cup of coffee contains: Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): 11% of the RDA, Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid): 6% of the RDA, Vitamin B1 (Thiamin): 2% of the RDA, Vitamin B3 (Niacin): 2% of the RDA, Folate: 1% of the RDA, Manganese: 3% of the RDA, Potassium: 3% of the RDA, Magnesium: 2% of the RDA, and Phosphorus: 1% of the RDA. This may not seem like a lot, but try multiplying with 3, 4, or however many cups you drink per day. It can add up to a significant portion of your daily nutrient intake. Coffee, what? Caffeine is the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. Soft drinks, tea, and chocolate all contain caffeine, but coffee is the biggest source. The caffeine content of a single cup can range from 30-300 mg, but the average cup is somewhere around 90-100 mg. Caffeine is a known stimulant. In the brain, it blocks the function of an inhibitory neurotransmitter (brain hormone) called Adenosine. By blocking adenosine, caffeine increases activity in the brain and the release of other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine. This reduces tiredness and makes us feel more alert. There are numerous studies showing that caffeine can lead to a short-term boost in brain function, including improved mood, reaction time, vigilance, and general cognitive function. Caffeine can also boost metabolism (calories burned) by 3-11% and even increase exercise performance by 11-12%, on average. However, some of these effects are likely to be short-term. If you drink coffee every day, then you will build a tolerance to it and the effects will be less powerful. AND, there is more!! Alzheimer's disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease and a leading cause of dementia. Studies have shown that coffee drinkers have up to a 65% lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease! Parkinson's is the second most common neurodegenerative disease and caused by the death of dopamine-generating neurons in the brain. Coffee drinkers have a 32-60% lower risk of Parkinson's disease. The more coffee people drink, the lower the risk. BOTTOM LINE: Several studies show that coffee drinkers have a much lower risk of dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease in old age. I am just blown away with all this information and perhaps I will start enjoying a fabulous cup of brew in the morning knowing I may be doing myself a great big favour health-wise. And that my simple cup of coffee may be a marvelous addition to my daily regiment. Kathryn Hartwell healthline.com

A good friend recently shared the concept of ‘Time Debt’ and I was immediately intrigued as we often ponder how to find more time to do all the things we have on our respective To Do lists. In truth, there is no time to be found as we all have the same 24 hours in a day. We also can’t manage time as time simply is. What we can do is effectively manage our choices and commitments. What happens when we don’t? We accumulate Time Debt. Time Debt is when we borrow time from area of our life to use for something else. It also occurs when we ‘lose’ time to people, habits and things that drain us. In other words, we use our time incorrectly, creating a time debt that we pay for later. One of the favorite places to ‘borrow’ time from is sleep by staying up late or getting up early in order to get things done. At some point, we need to catch up on our sleep. We also add to

our time debt when we ask someone to do a task for us and in exchange, we agree to do something for them later. Another source for borrowed time comes from giving up things that fill us up (self-care activities) because we decide they are less urgent or important as the tasks at hand. Often, we end up overinvesting our time in others and underinvesting in ourselves. I hear people saying they don’t have enough time, don’t know where the time went, something wasted their time, or my personal favourite, that the day is getting shorter and the To Do list is getting longer. Perhaps you’ve heard yourself saying or thinking these things on occasion. Often the cause is taking on more to do without letting go of what they already have on their plate. We are asking for deadline extensions, multi-tasking, rescheduling, putting tasks off, eating on the go, working on vacation, and more. These are all indicators that we are incurring Time Debt. Like financial debt, Time Debt often causes anxiety and overwhelm. It robs us of joy and a balanced lifestyle. We can experience health problems, be impatient and angry, damage relation-

Time Debt

“To live a more balanced existence, you have to recognize that not doing everything that comes along is okay. There's no need to overextend yourself.” ~ Steven Covey, author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Darlis is an entrepreneur with a passion for helping people in business, organizations and entire communities recognize their uniqueness and achieve possibilities they may not have thought possible. She believes growth and success start at the grassroots level… with people, and she uses training, coaching and facilitating to inspire positive change. ships, miss opportunities, make mistakes and lower our overall quality of life.

How will I feel later about using my time in this way? Am I wasting time?

As author, Linda Sivertson, says, “The key is for each of us to consciously choose to take the time we are given and convert it into moments, hours and a lifetime spent wisely.”

At last month’s WomenTalk in Strathmore, we heard strong messages about using time wisely. One Talker told us about her cross-Canada motorbike tour. She had a dream and an opportunity arose to fulfill it while raising money for someone in need. It was a perfect fit for her values and goals. The second Talker spoke of choosing happiness, thinking consciously and taking time for the important things. Our founder shared a powerful message about looking after ourselves in order to give our best to others and the MC brought a new word into our vocabulary: Genshai (Gan-shy) which means to treat others and ourselves in an abundant, positive and encouraging way.

So how do we incur less time debt? Some people take drastic measures (think bankruptcy) and quit everything that isn’t an absolute necessary like sleep, food, family time and work. There is, however, another way. First, keep a time log and see where your time is being spent. Pay yourself first by giving time to yourself so you have the energy for other tasks. When necessary, say ‘no’ to yourself and others. If someone else can do a task, ask or hire them do it (check out the business listings in this issue of Newsy Neighbour and support your local community). And finally, ask yourself some simple questions before deciding how to invest your time: How does this support my values and life goals? What am I giving up to do this? Is it a true priority?

Use your time to invest in yourself by joining us at WomenTalk every last Thursday of the month. Come and be part of an inspiring community of ordinary women sharing extraordinary stories. For more information about WOMEN TALK in Strathmore, please visit www.WomenTalk.ca/Strathmore.

I was taken to the Vet a little while ago. Clearly, it was traumatic and therefore I am still talking about it. The amount of animal cruelty I witnessed at this particular vet office was not for the faint of heart. They ACTUALLY made me sit on a scale, and then they DISCUSSED OUT LOUD my weight!! Like it was public knowledge!! Chloe was there, a great Husky gal, and she HEARD THEM. She snorted with laughter. I snarled at her. She’s the husky one, pun intended. I could hear dogs barking down the hall, and I knew the torture they were experiencing. I stuck my head in the first door and there was my friend Larry, a Chihuahua, standing on the table getting *A TREAT* while they put the Cone of Shame around his head. I barked my sympathies at him. He knows all too well the mistreatment we experience behind these doors. And then there was Bella, the cute little girl who loves me but I have no interest in her at all. She was getting treats too (I call it “fluffing” – they trick you into not paying attention to the atrocity they are doing unto you!) while they bandaged her leg up for the 4th time. Keep biting your cast off, Bella! Stick it to them!!

Our daughter had adopted a stray cat. To my distress, he began to use the back of our new sofa as a scratching post. “Don’t worry,” my husband reassured me. “I’ll have him trained in no time.” I watched for several days as my husband patiently “trained” our new pet. Whenever the cat scratched, my husband deposited him outdoors to teach him a lesson. The cat learned quickly. For the next 16 years, whenever he wanted to go outside, he scratched the back of the sofa.

We finally got to the room and I could just SMELL the evil in there. The doctor came in and I barked at him. That’ll show him. Mom took me there to look at some lumps on my neck. I call them love bumps, but she doesn’t for some reason. And here’s where the animal cruelty takes on a whole new form. The doctor told my mom that the large lumps on my back are… please excuse me while I wipe the tears from my eyes… rolls. Fat rolls, to be exact. They actually said – OUT LOUD – that I was fat. FAT!!!!!!!!!!!! I glared at the doctor. This kind of cruelty needs to be put into the public eye. Calling a paying customer FAT. When CLEARLY I am not. Sure, my butt may have got stuck squeezing out of the doggie door once or twice, but everyone knows doggie doors contract in the cold.

And then, the most awful part of the experience: he put me on a diet. I can’t even write those words without tears pouring from my eyes. They discussed it openly, like I wasn’t standing right there. I looked at both of them, my dismay written all over my face. They were actually talking about me like I wasn’t even there. They put me on DIET FOOD. Mom only gives me 5 TREATS A DAY now. I am withering away. I am STARVING. My life may as well be over, because it certainly isn’t worth living any more. Send help. And steak. ~ Denise Geremia

There are many ways to lose your sense of self-esteem despite of how trivial it could get. But whatever happens, we should all try not to lose our own sense of self.

"A Better You " Your 7- days Program to Self- Improvement

I seem to have lost count on how many times I've read and heard of celebrity marriages failing. Not that I care (and personally, I don't); it seems strange that we often see movie and TV stars as flawless people, living the fairytale life of riches and glamour. I suppose we all have to stop sticking our heads in the clouds and face reality.

So what does it take to be a cut above the rest? Here are some of the things you can think and improve on that should be enough for a week. 1 . Know your purpose Are you wandering through life with little direction - hoping that you'll find happiness, health and prosperity? Identify your life purpose or mission statement and you will have your own unique compass that will lead you to your truth north every time. This may seem tricky at first when you see yourself to be in a tight or even dead end. But there's always that little loophole to turn things around and you can make a big difference to yourself. 2. Know your values What do you value most? Make a list of your top 5 values. Some examples are security, freedom, family, spiritual development,

learning. As you set your goals, check your goals against your values. If the goal doesn't align with any of your top five values - you may want to reconsider it or revise it. The number shouldn't discourage you, instead it should motivate you to do more than you can ever dreamed of. 3. Know your needs Unmet needs can keep you from living authentically. Take care of yourself. Do you have a need to be acknowledged, to be right, to be in control, to be loved? There are so many people who lived their lives without realizing their dreams and most of them end up being stressed or even depressed for that matter. List your top four needs and get them met before it's too late!

Quality Consignment

OVER 40,000 UNIQUE ITEMS

4. Know your passions You know who you are and what you truly enjoy in life. Obstacles like doubt and lack of enthusiasm will only hinder you, but will not derail your chance to become the person you ought to be. Express yourself and honor the people who has inspired you to become the very person you wanted to be. 5. Live from the inside out Increase your awareness of your inner wisdom by regularly reflecting in silence. Commune with nature. Breathe deeply to quiet your distracted mind. For most of us city slickers it's hard to even find the peace and quiet we want even in our own home. In my case, I often just sit in a dimly lit room and play some classical music. There's sound, yes, but music does soothe the savage beast. 6. Honour your strengths What are your positive traits? What special talents do you have? List three - if you get stuck, ask those closest to you to help identify these. Are you imaginative, witty, good with your hands? Find ways to express your authentic self through your strengths. You can increase your self-confidence when you can share what you know to others. 7. Serve others When you live authentically, you may find that you develop an interconnected sense of being. When you are true to who you are, living your purpose and giving of your talents to the world around you, you give back in service what you came to share with others - your spirit - your essence. The rewards for sharing your gift with those close to you is indeed rewarding, much more if it were to be the eyes of a stranger who can appreciate what you have done to them.

Self-improvement is indeed one type of work that is worth it. It shouldn't always be within the confines of an office building, or maybe in the four corners of your own room. The difference lies within ourselves and how much we want to change for the better.

of faith, and every act of courage supports the next one.

A Mindful Minute

Becky is an Alberta girl, yoga teacher, writer, sometimes artist, budding guitar star and serial entrepreneur that enjoys looking into what makes people tick and what makes life a vibrant and loving experience. Through classes, workshops, online offerings and writing, she enjoys sharing the wisdom of yoga, self-knowledge, learnings from her fellow humans, and encouraging and empowering all to take ownership of their life, health and happiness.

The Importance of Faith in Overcoming Fear.

What is faith? Can we move from feeling fearful, to feeling faithful? Faith can be defined as “complete trust or confidence in someone or something”. Because we live in this country, what each of us choose to have faith in is completely up to each of us. We can choose to have faith in God, our own hearts, our family, our community, our human nature, Mother Nature, our calling. It is more than just optimism and pessimism about a situation. It requires trust in a desired outcome, despite whatever fears or limiting beliefs we may have.

When we pick ourselves up and start over again, we act in faith of our ability to learn and grow. Fear may keep us stagnant, afraid of what others may think. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, to change and grow, we are blessed with a new perspective on our lives and the world. When we believe that there is more good than bad in most of humanity, when we choose love over fear, compassion over anger, we act in faith. Like a snowball, our faith can inspire others. Sometimes I struggle to be faithful to myself, my life, my path – this is always why I end up sharing my thoughts here with you. There is a lot of fear that comes with being human. Between the implicit beliefs that we may have no awareness of having, media and pop culture affecting our concept of what is real and of value, and our own personal limitations we may place upon ourselves, sometimes we get stuck on the path of fear. Let us choose the faithful path instead. Namaste, Becky

Faith is what allows us to manifest the best of ourselves, and the world, at any given moment. What if we were to treat Faith and Fear as an intersection we come to each day in our lives? Each as a potential path to follow? Do we need to know where the path ends? Faithful acts conquer fear. Fear would keep us from stepping out and trying something we feel called to do. When we choose to follow our passions, we act in faith. We come to KNOW the value of our passions. Fearful of many things, we may not be able to hear or heed our inner voice. When we choose to trust our intuition, we act in faith, we come to know and honour our own innate wisdom. Fear of failure may keep us from ever starting. Choosing to be courageous is an act

Mad Lib Love Letter Dear ________________ (Name of person filling in the blanks) I know it has been a while since I have picked up a pen and expressed myself in a letter to you. Believe me, my pen’s silence has nothing to do with the argument we had over _________________ (petty household chore) or my all consuming obsession with __________________ (Bizarre hobby). It’s just that in this manic world, time is slipperier than a tube of K-Y Jelly turned inside out. One rarely finds a moment to sit back and praise their partner’s ________________ (intellectual forte) or their drop-dead-gorgeous ________________ (Naughty bit). But today is your day, my fuzzy-wuzzy ________________ (cute animal). I shall lavish all my attention upon you. I will abstain from _________________ (Favourite TV show). I will not criticize your _____________ (annoying habit). I will not pleasure myself to _____________________ (sexy celebrity). Instead of lounging around eating __________________ (junk food) in our ___________________ (dirty garment of choice) and having a five minute love making session, we are go-

ing to dine upon ___________________ (animal you would NOT eat) slathered in _______________ (French word) sauce. No expense will be spared upon this occasion, which is why we will wash it all down with ___________________________ (extremely unique beverage). Later, we will become intoxicated from physical euphoria alone as our bodies entwine into a sweaty human pretzel. This will be the most ____________________ (extremely promising adjective) lovemaking session ever seen. To thee I pledge: I will make sure you ______________________ (awkward metaphor for explosion) with pleasure. No matter how long it takes. Why? Because you are my __________________ (your favourite thing), and I am your _______________ (another favourite thing). To summarize, when you look back upon this eternally satisfying evening, you will always think: That was better than _____________________________________ (an embarrassing favourite thing). Love always, __________________ (Name of person who “wrote” the letter) PS: Would you mind de-friending _______________________ (Ex boyfriend/girlfriend) on Facebook before we go out?

Meditation I don’t know if you have noticed lately, but if you watch Dr. Oz, The Doctors or Oprah’s Life Lessons, everyone seems to be talking about ‘Meditation’. I have taken a couple stabs at it over the years and can never stay committed; but I’m thinking I may give it another try. Meditation is the art of silencing the mind. When the mind is silent, concentration is increased and we experience inner peace in the midst of every day stress. This elusive inner peace is what attracts so many people to meditation and is something everyone can benefit from. These are some of the benefits of meditation: Improved concentration. A clear mind makes you more productive, especially in creative disciplines like writing. Less bothered by little things. Do you sometimes allow yourself to get upset by little things? It is the nature of the mind to magnify small things into serious problems. Meditation helps us detach. We learn to live in the here and now, rather than worrying about the past or future. We do not worry about meaningless things, but see the bigger picture. Better Health. There have been numerous studies pointing to the

health benefits of meditation. The reason is that meditation reduces stress levels and alleviates anxiety. If we can reduce stress, many health benefits follow. Knowledge of Self. Meditation enables us to have a deeper understanding of our inner self. Through meditation, we can gain a better understanding of our life’s purpose. The great thing about meditation is that our philosophy/religious belief is not important. Meditation is about consciousness. The beliefs of the mind become trivial. We dive deep into the heart of the matter to gain access to our soul – our inner reality. Therefore, mediation can (and is) practiced by people of different religions or no religion. Many people like the idea of meditation, but feel they don’t have enough time. When you really want to do something, you can find time. Get up earlier or watch 30 minutes less TV. Meditation requires an investment of time, but clearing the mind makes the rest of the day more productive. Nothing is better than the feeling of inner peace. What is the point in being tremendously busy but unable to enjoy it? Meditation is not about retreating from the world; it gives us inspiration. Whatever you do, if you have peace of mind, your work will be more enjoyable and productive.

the most from meditation, you need to do it every day. This requires a place and time where you will not be disturbed. Sit with a straight back. Don’t try to meditate lying down because you are likely to fall asleep. Meditation brings relaxation and peace but at the same time this is a dynamic peace. Meditation is quite different than the relaxation of sleep. When we really meditate, we are fully alert and conscious. Our sense of awareness is heightened. Afterwards you’ll have a positive feeling for the world and a renewed sense of dynamism. Don’t eat before meditating. After a heavy meal your body will be lethargic with digestion. It is not necessary to mediate in the lotus posture. It is fine to meditate in a chair, as long as the back is straight. Burning incense and having a candle are not necessary, but they can add a little extra inspiration. It is good to meditate early in the morning. However you learn to meditate, you must learn to concentrate on one thing at a time. Usually, the mind tries to hold several different thoughts and ideas at once. When you sit down to meditate for the first time, you realize how cluttered the mind is. Mediation teachers have described the mind as a “mad monkey”. However, the mind can be tamed and forced to concentrate on a single thought. One helpful technique is concentrating on a candle flame. Narrow your gaze to the small tip and block out all other thoughts. When you get distracted, go back to focusing on the candle flame. The important thing is that you concentrate only on one thing at a time. Another way to learn concentration is through the use of mantra. A mantra is the repetition of a sacred word. For example, you might repeat the mantra ‘AUM’ a certain number of times. Repeating a mantra forces the mind to focus on a single thought. After you’ve practiced concentration and learned to focus on one thing at a time, you can proceed to the next stage: no thought at all. Achieving a silent mind is difficult, but when you attain it, the experience is powerful. Try to view your thoughts as separate from yourself. When a thought appears, make a conscious decision to throw it out of your mind. Over time you realize that you are capable of allowing or rejecting thoughts. Your real “I” is not a collection of thoughts, but something far deeper. This is the most significant realization of meditation – that you do not have to be a slave to your thoughts. Through meditation, you attain the power to control your thoughts, and on occasion stop them completely. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t attain a silent mind straightaway. It takes time and practice. There is nothing really else to it; meditation is a simple and spontaneous action. Unfortunately, our mind is used to complication and it takes time to unlearn bad habits.

get-well card that shows a man with large breasts sitting in his doctor's office, with the doctor saying, "Sorry for the mixup. It seems that there were two Bobby Smiths in the O.R. at the same time," can add levity to what is often a rather painful recovery. Similarly, if a loved one is dealing with a rash or hives, a funny get-well card might depict a man sitting on an exam table with beehives attached to various parts of his body and a doctor saying, "I must say, Harold. You have the worst case of hives I've ever seen." A funny get-well card doesn't have to relate to your loved one's specific medical procedure or surgery. For example, virtually any man with a sense of humour would appreciate a card that illustrates a patient on the operating table of a vasectomy clinic. The doctor has lifted up the sheet and turns and says to the nurse, "Nurse, looks like we'll need to use the pediatric instruments for this one." If you know a sick or injured child, you understand that gentle humour will help lift his or her spirits. A get-well card with a drawing of a bunny with a cast on his arm that says, "Being sick sure isn't much fun" on the outside and, "But being spoiled is!" on the inside might bring a smile to the kid's face. Often, though, kids appreciate a thoughtful get-well gift. For example, a soft, plush kitten that comes with removable casts and bandages would definitely appeal to a child who is sick or injured.

A Funny Get-Well Card Can Brighten Someone’s Day It can be nerve-wracking and worrisome when a friend or family member is sick, injured, or undergoing surgery or a medical procedure. For adults, elective surgeries are accompanied by many of the same risks as emergency surgeries. When the patient is a child, he or she can easily be frightened by unfamiliar surroundings and the team of medical professionals. Often, an ill or recuperating adult will appreciate the ways in which a funny get-well card can lift his or her spirits, while a child can be comforted by a thoughtful gift or card.

Even parents and parents-to-be appreciate gifts that will help them prepare for those inevitable times when their children are injured. A red pouch that contains a reusable ice pack serves two purposes: to ice an injured area without the harsh effects of direct contact, and reducing the child's fear by hiding blood. Even an emesis basin (for vomiting) can be appealing - if it's covered in cartoons and comes with a sealable lid. Whether it's through a funny get-well card or a thoughtful gift, you have the ability to lift the spirits of loved ones who are sick or injured.

It's appropriate to send a funny get-well card to those who expect to have a speedy recovery, or to those who are having elective surgery or a common medical procedure. For example, if a friend is having a colonoscopy, a card that depicts a patient standing on an exam table with his pants down while a doctor with a clipboard looks on, and a caption that reads, "Life can sure be a pain in the butt," is sure to be appreciated. Likewise, if a friend or family member is getting breast implants, a

Too Old to be a Flower Girl We are getting ready for a wedding in the family and I have to admit, I’m pretty excited about it. The bride and groom are incredibly adorable and slightly nauseating with their constant texting when apart and pdas when together. They are still very much in that hand holding, eye gazing phase of their relationship. (Although so are hubby and I, but the hand holding might be more to keep me from wandering unaccompanied into camera stores and our eye gazing might be into eyes more blurry with tiredness than sparkly with passion on occasion.) My only complaint about the wedding is, I have been informed by the bride that I am simply too old to be the flower girl. Too old! Too old to be the flower girl! I am okay with changing the title to flower mid-life woman, but alas no. The bride has crushed my dreams. Stomped on them like a bull in a field of spring time posies. Broken my heart, she has. Leaving me sad and forlorn, droopy and sullen and wretched – just wretched, like a sunflower on a sunless day. Sigh, once the bride (21 years ago) but never the flower girl for me. “Too old” says the bride.

(never mind that it’s an indoor wedding. I promise, if I was the flower girl, my hair would waft like the softest waves of wheat on an autumn day, darn it.) Now perhaps this wouldn’t be such a hard pill for me to swallow if the bride wasn’t collecting her 15% discount from restaurants for the past two decades. Yup, the bride-to-be, my wonderful and youthful, Mother-in-Law will be 75 when she says I do to his Worship - Mayor of the major metropolis, Warburg, Alberta – Ralph. I say again, if the bride can be in her seventies, why can’t the flower girl be in her forties? When in fact are we too old? I say NEVER. Case in point, the TIOW students that every single day bounce past my office full of energy and enthusiasm heading to their classroom to take on a day of computer and life studies. Every day I need to get up and close my office doors because these giggly pupils are having way too much fun learning and me, in my crotchety middle age; I need a quiet environment in which to concentrate. The laughter, giggles, jokes and general cacophony of jubilant sounds coming from the students makes me want to join their program. Alas, again, I am sadly not in the right age group. Too old to be a flower girl, too young to be a TIOW student! To join the “in crowd” at McBride I need to be on the north side of 55 – there is no south side...no, you can’t be too old to join in the fun of learning and growing and laughing and making new school chums but, apparently you can be too young. Honestly the other day while I was stuck behind my desk writing the third draft of a health and safety manual these guys were outside in the sunshine with sidewalk chalk. It isn’t fair. I still want to learn. I still want to get better at my essential career skills and life management skills but noooooo, too young. But perhaps you aren’t. If you happen to be in that fun fifty-plus crowd and are interested in learning the ins and outs of Microsoft Office, and work search basics, and you are looking for work then pop in the office and check out the program. I will be in my office trying to figure out how to hide a basket of rose petals in my dress for the wedding. Stop in and say hi, but not too loudly; I am, afterall, old in my forties.

“What is too old?” I innocently (with maybe just a wee dollop of sarcasm) ask. “You,” replies the bride without a touch of compassion for my dreams of skipping up the aisle, rose petals floating gently behind me, hair blowing in the breeze likes an Herbal Essence commercial

Truths for Mature Humans:

1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history when you die. 2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong. 3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger. 4. There is great need for a sarcasm font. 5. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet? 6. Was learning cursive really necessary? 7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on # 5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my driveway. 8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died. 9. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired. 10. Bad decisions make good stories. 11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day. 12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don't want to have to restart my collection... again. 13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to.

14. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know NOT to answer when they call. 15. I think the freezer deserves a light as well. 16. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Budweiser than Kay. 17. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option. 18. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger. 19. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said? 20. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong brothers and sisters! 21. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever. 22. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is. 23. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time! 24. The first testicular guard, the "Cup," was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important.

Buy recycled aluminum foil, which requires just one-twentieth the energy of non-recycled foil. Then, recycle it when you're done! Buy organic produce. Because it doesn't use pesticides, it uses less energy. This is actually going to be healthier for you and healthier for the planet. When you buy one litre of water at the store, you're actually buying about six litres of water, because when manufacturers make plastic bottles, it takes five litres of water to cool the plastic. To save the resources used in creating all those bottles, get a water filter and a reusable aluminum or plastic bottle. If any charger or appliance is left in an outlet, it continues to use power—even if it's turned off. Not only are you using energy you don't need to be using, but also it goes on your energy bill.

September As I write this, I am getting ready to have my last Town Hall Meeting as your Councilor. In the past, these meetings have been for a few purposes; to hear from the residents so that I can get an understanding of what they want to see from their Municipality, and to attempt to explain methods of getting their requests fulfilled and what the County can and can’t do for them. I have had around 25 of these meetings and I think every single one has been a little different; this one will obviously be different again because it is the last. I have the RCMP coming. Lately there has been quite a bit of criminal activity in Southern Alberta and being located close to a city has meant that we will get our fair share. I know that has been troubling for many residents, both those who are worried since they have heard the reports of things being stolen and especially those who have been violated by thieves who have helped themselves to their possessions. I know how unsettling that can be since we were victims of a house prowling many years ago. I have hope that the RCMP can shed some light on what is happening in communities like ours and what recommendations they might have to prevent crime in our neighbourhoods. The Langdon Citizens on Patrol will also be there; they are a great group of caring people who would like to do what they can to help the RCMP in reducing crime in Langdon. Their main theme is to be the eyes and ears of the community to assist the Police in catching the bad guys. There are about 20 of them right now, but it might work better if there were around 50. I joined up a while ago, it’s pretty easy, the RCMP gets your Driver’s License and makes sure you aren’t a criminal and then you are part of the right

side of the law. I will continue to help as I am able. There is an Election coming October 16, and for the first time in ten years, I not be part of it. Al Schule has put his name forward and like myself, he has experience as both the Reeve of the County as well as being a Councilor. I believe he can step in and provide good governance, which is the only goal I have ever had while being part of your Council. I am confident we will be in good hands if Al is successful in winning the election, if he is acclaimed all the better. As far as my own political aspirations, I will be waiting and watching for a need. I am part of the United Conservative Party as the new President of the Chestermere - Rocky View Constituency Association and would like to see the Conservative movement do well. Our province needs a bit of a lift and I hope to be part of that effort. Thank you for your support in the past and I look forward to seeing you all again soon. Stop in at my new establishment, Langdon Lounge and Langdon Pizza, across from the Tim Horton’s for a drink sometime! Best Regards, Councillor Rolly Ashdown, Division 4, Rocky View County

After the game was over, the Stampeders Foundation (through Elevate Auctions) put the 1992 autographed jerseys up for sale. The goal was to raise $10,000. The mandate of the Stampeders Foundation is to support amateur and grassroots football in Calgary and southern Alberta. In addition to promoting access to all levels of football, the foundation supports “a number of health initiatives through player involvement and in-game programming.”

Late July, the Calgary Stampeders celebrated their legacy as they honoured the 1992 Grey Cup champions, led by Hall-of-Famer Doug Flutie. It was a celebration that a former teammate and News Talk 770 radio personality said contributed to the Stamps most lopsided win of the 2017 season as they embarrassed the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 60 – 1. “I really do believe that,” said Greg Peterson. He was a member of the 1992 team and he took part in the week-long celebration. “They were told of the history and what our team did. They were excited to meet Doug, and I think that played a role in their motivation to win the game, and the one-sided outcome,” he said. “They didn’t want to take their foot off the gas with the ’92 team watching.”

The jersey action was a huge success and exceeded expectations. The power of radio and News Talk 770’s post-game show played a major role. During the post-game show, I joked with Greg that no one would want his jersey: “Who in their right mind would pay good money (even for charity) to have a Peterson #24?” Greg played along. He said he would take the time to personally meet whichever fan purchased his jersey. He would buy them lunch. I suggested we throw in a tour of the press box to watch Greg and Mark Stephen in action. Spencer Wilson’s dad called the show and said he would throw in a banner from the 1992 season. I think you see where this story is going? Greg Peterson’s jersey became the hottest ticket in the auction. It was eventually won by long-time Calgary Stampeder fan David Conn. Only Doug Flutie’s #20 sold for more. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Altogether Different

“It came down to me and another bidder,” said Conn. “The auction ended, but there was a five-minute period to increase your bid. All of the other jerseys were sold, but I went back and forth for 25 minutes with another buyer. I had a limit that I was going to spend but I passed that.” “Obviously it was for charity so I could justify it, but it was about you guys on the broadcast. I love the Stampeders and I love the job you guys do on the radio.” It didn’t hurt that Peterson had a long tenure with the Stampeders (1984 – 92); he was an all-star in 1990, a Grey Cup champion and a Calgary born and trained player. Last month, Greg and I took David and his father Allan out for lunch and, yes, Greg even footed the bill! It was great meeting such passionate fans. David’s father is 94 years old; he was born and raised in Calgary and has been a fan since the Calgary Bronks of the Western Interprovincial Football Union. If you want to know anything about the 1948 Grey Cup Champions, Allan is the guy to talk to.

Over the past year, I have heard from many constituents of Bow River concerned about rural crime. I believe that this is a very serious matter. The crime affecting isolated rural homes and farms in our riding is not just a local phenomenon. As recently reported by CTV’s Laura Payton, the RCMP is facing a serious nation-wide staffing shortage, and it is limiting officers’ ability to respond to rural calls in a timely manner. If you have not done so already, I would urge you to read the article* – it is an eye-opening account, which demonstrates that the concerns of our riding’s rural residents are part of a larger problem taking place across Canada.

Having spoken with many of you that have been impacted by rural crime, as well as RCMP officials, I am convinced that action must be taken, and soon, to address this issue. In many cases, the RCMP is stretched too thin over vast rural areas, and need additional support to increase their efficacy in remote locations. I will continue to communicate with the relevant authorities to resolve this issue. Another matter that may affect many residents of our region is the Liberals’ proposed private corporation tax changes, which are intended to close tax loopholes. The government is targeting three supposed loopholes: ‘income sprinkling’ (which is the practise of shifting income to family members), converting a corporation’s regular income to capital gains, and retaining passive investment in a private corporation. While much of the controversy over these changes has focussed on their impact on medical professionals, as reported recently in the National Post** they also have the potential to place a new tax burden on businesses in our riding. Can You Relate? When you're in the shower and you hear loud thumps you think, “They're killing my family and I'll have to fight the attacker naked!” That moment when you see someone else call your best friend their best friend and you're like, NO! You hit your hip on the corner of the table and you feel like you have been shot! Turning off the lights downstairs... And running up the stairs as fast as you can so no one kills you! You slap your best friend when something exciting happens. You just sit in your towel after a shower because you're too lazy to get dressed. You turn on every light on the trail to your bedroom. It will keep you safe! You realize when you're telling a story that nobody’s listening so you slowly fade out and pretend you never said anything.

Beyond the Naked Eye It’s hard to say when in our lives each of us become aware of this thing called “astronomy”. But it is safe to say that at some point on our lives, each and every one of us has that moment when we are suddenly stunned when we come face to face with the enormity of the universe that we see in the night sky. For many of us who are city dwellers, we don’t really notice that sky up there on a routine basis. The lights of the city do a good job of disguising the amazing display that is above all of our heads all of the time. So, it might be that once a year vacation to a camping spot or a trip to a relative’s house out in the country that we find ourselves outside when the spender of the night sky suddenly decides to put on its spectacular show. If you have had that kind of moment when you were literally struck breathless by the spender the night sky can show to us, you can probably remember that exact moment when you could say little else but “wow” at what you saw. That “wow” moment is what astrology is all about. For some, that wow moment becomes a passion that leads to a career studying the stars. For a lucky few, that wow moment becomes an all-consuming obsession that leads to them traveling to the stars in a space shuttle or on one of our early space missions. But for most of us, astrology may become a pastime or a regular hobby. But we carry that wow moment with us for the rest of our lives and begin looking for ways to look deeper and learn more about the spectacular universe we see in the millions of stars above us each night. To get started in learning how to observe the stars much better, there are some basic things we might need to look

deeper, beyond just what we can see with the naked eye and begin to study the stars as well as enjoy them. The first thing you need isn’t equipment at all but literature. A good star map will show you the major constellations, the location of the key stars we use to navigate the sky and the planets that will appear larger than stars. And if you add to that map some well done introductory materials into the hobby of astronomy, you are well on your way. The next thing we naturally want to get is a good telescope. You may have seen a hobbyist who is well along in their study setting up those really cool-looking telescopes on a hill somewhere. That excites the amateur astronomer in you, because that must be the logical next step in the growth of your hobby. But how to buy a good telescope can be downright confusing and intimidating. Before you go to that big expense, it might be a better next step from the naked eye to invest in a good set of binoculars. There are even binoculars that are suited for star gazing that will do just as good a job at giving you that extra vision you want to see just a little better the wonders of the universe. A well-designed set of binoculars also gives you much more mobility and ability to keep your “enhanced vision” at your fingertips when that amazing view just presents itself to you. None of this precludes you from moving forward with your plans to put together an awesome telescope system. Just be sure you get quality advice and training on how to configure your telescope to meet your needs. Using these guidelines, you will enjoy hours of enjoyment stargazing at the phenomenal sights in the night sky that are beyond the naked eye.

How to Make Gel Candles

Gel candles are a great item to make. Not only are they beautiful, but very easy to light. They also burn slowly, giving your candles a long life for you to treasure. Gel candles are very easy to make as well as inexpensive. You can add your favourite scents to them as well. The supplies you need to get started include gel, zinc wicks, fragrance oils if you desire, and dye to add colour. Some people love the look of a clear gel candle and prefer not to use any dye. It is important that you only use zinc wicks for gel candles because cotton wicks absorb the gel, causing them not to light or burn well. You can purchase these supplies from a craft store or online.

403-936-5474 www.indusrec.ca

Indus is located approximately 15km East of Calgary on Hwy 22x

Gel candles can be made in a variety of holders. Using those made of glass will give you the best results. However, as long as the container is non-flammable, you will be fine. To add uniqueness to gel candles, some makers choose to make them in fancy glasses, wine glasses, and vases. To add colour and themes to candles, consider using embeds. This can be glitter, marbles, colourful rocks, sea shells, crystals, or anything else that won’t burn. You will need a hot glue gun to stick the wick to the bottom of the holder you plan to use. Hold firmly in place until the wick sticks. To make centering easier, mark the bottom of the holder with a red or black marker right in the center. The wick should then be placed on top of the mark. Leave the wick long enough to reach outside of the holder. You will trim it later. To melt the gel, cut it into small strips. For best results melt it in a double boiler at medium heat. The gel should be heated to 200°F. A quality thermometer is a great investment, as the gel won’t set properly if you don’t get it hot enough and it will lose the glossy colour if you get the temperature too high. If you desire to add colour to your gel candles, add it in slowly. The colours show more vibrantly in gel candles than wax candles so you will need a lot less than what you use if you make wax candles. Stir the colour into the melted wax slowly. If you aren’t happy with the colour, you can slowly add more. If you plan to use embedded objects in the candle, it is suggested you keep the gel candle colour very light. Next, add fragrance if you desire. 1/3 teaspoon is all you need for each glass of melted gel.

For best results, heat your container in the microwave for about one minute. This will eliminate those unsightly bubbles that can form on gel candles. Immediately after removing the holder from the microwave, start adding your embeds. You will want to dip them in the hot gel to get them to stick in the holder. You can arrange embeds any way you desire. For best results push them towards the edges of the holder so that they can easily be scene. You can create embed patterns or add them loosely. It is important not to keep the gel very hot while completing the embed process. Once you have that done, pour the gel into the holder. If you allow the gel to cool before pouring it in the holder you will end up with clumps of gel

throughout the candle. Make sure the wick is hanging over the top of the holder before pouring in the gel. Once the gel has set, trim it to the size you desire. Making gel candles is easy, fun, and inexpensive. It is a great way to make your own beautiful candles for using, giving as gifts, or selling. There are wonderful books with plenty of pictures of gel candle designs you can try, or simply create your own.

The Things Kids Say...

Nominated Top Rural Out Of School Care Program In Alberta!

2 LOCATIONS

#19 204 Strathaven Dr & 227 3 Avenue

1) NUDITY

I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, "Mom, that lady isn't wearing a seat belt!"

2) OPINIONS

On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, "The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents."

Celebrating 10 years in the Strathmore Area!!

3) KETCHUP

A mother was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang, so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. "Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle."

4) MORE NUDITY

A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, "What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?"

“It takes a community to raise a child.”

Multi site facility - Excellent summer camp programs - Subsidy available

5) POLICE

While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, 'Are you a cop?' 'Yes,' I answered and continued writing the report. 'My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?' 'Yes, that's right,' I told her. 'Well, then,' she said as she extended her foot toward me, 'would you please tie my shoe?'

6) POLICE

It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. 'Is that a dog you got back there?' he asked. 'It sure is,' I replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, 'What'd he do?'

7) ELDERLY

While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers & wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The

tooth fairy will never believe this!'

8) DRESS-UP

A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, 'Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit.' 'And why not, darling?' 'You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.'

9) DEATH

While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers, and with sonorous dignity, intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.' Dance classes available for all ages and levels. Evenings or SATURDAY's for full and short term programs. 3 year old and up.

10) SCHOOL

A little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just wasting my time,' she said to her mother.. 'I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk!'

11) BIBLE

A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. 'Mama, look what I found,' the boy called out. 'What have you got there, dear?' With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, 'I think it's Adam's underwear!'

Always Ready to Lend a Helping Hand Come Out to the Wheatland Crisis Society’s 25th Anniversary Fall Gala! Every day, countless numbers of women, men, and children are faced with the grim reality of domestic violence and abuse. These situations are heartbreaking and distressing, and leave entire families battered, traumatized, and feeling like they’ve got nowhere to turn. While people in these situations can often feel helpless, there’s a beacon of light for individuals dealing with domestic violence throughout our community: the Wheatland Crisis Society. I had the opportunity to speak with Carly Cole – Public Educator at the Wheatland Crisis Society – about the vital services that they provide our towns and community members, and couldn’t have been more humbled by the incredible work they do to help families and individuals coping with some truly difficult situations. “The mandate of the Wheatland Crisis Society has always been to provide safety, shelter, food, clothing, crisis counselling, referral and advocacy for those impacted by family abuse, or in crisis,” Cole began by explaining to me. “We’ve been around since 1992, and started out as a grassroots movement, when a few local farmers saw that there was a need for this type of a service, and worked to make it happen. There was no funding back then, and everything was entirely volunteer-driven.” Hearing this, I was immediately floored by the good-natured kindness of the community members who live amongst us. That people would go to such tireless lengths in order to help others during such difficult times speaks volumes about the individuals whom we are privileged to call our friends and neighbours. “Of course, things have grown since then,” Cole told me. “We have our own building now, and aren’t just based out of the old Strathmore RCMP building anymore, which is great! We’re able to take in up to 25 individuals at once, and offer a stay of three weeks – a vast improvement over when we were only able to offer a stay of just a couple days. We provide shelter, food, daily programming, court support, counselling, mental health support, and even things like yoga. Some of this is covered by the government funding we’ve secured over the years, but the large majority of it is only made possible by the generosity of our community members. That’s why we do fundraisers: so that we can continue to offer these vital services to those who need them.” As Cole described to me all that the Wheatland Crisis Society does to assist struggling individuals within our community, I once again simply couldn’t believe how giving and generous our fellow community members truly are, in standing up to domestic violence and giving so selflessly to help those in need. “It goes beyond that,” Cole told this incredulous writer. “We also

We also provide public education to schools and other community groups by offering programs that promote the Society’s mandates, and letting people know what to do if they find themselves in an unhealthy relationship, and where to turn. Everything is local – whether you’re in Strathmore, Drumheller, Three Hills, or even Chestermere or Langdon, our outreach programs are there for you.” If you’re like me, you’ve heard enough by this point to be keen on learning how you can give back and help out this truly worthwhile undertaking. “Come out to our 25th Anniversary Fall Gala!” Cole emphatically invited me, and all of The Newsy Neighbour readership. “It’s happening on Saturday, October 28th at the Strathmore Travelodge, in the banquet room. We’ve got some fantastic entertainment coming by; there will be a 50/50 raffle with prizes like a $1000 Air Canada gift certificate and a 70” smart TV; and we’ll have both a silent and a live auction featuring some fantastic prizes that are just starting to get donated now. The focus of the evening will be on where we’ve come from, where we’re going, and a celebration of all we’ve been able to accomplish over the past 25 years. We’re also reaching out to everyone who’s ever been a part of the Society – staff, volunteers, board members, etc. – to come out and share stories about their time at the shelter. It’s going to be a great night, and the more folks we can get to come out, the more people we’ll be able to help down the road.” Tickets for the Wheatland Crisis Society’s 25th Anniversary Fall Gala are available right now. Visit www.strathmoreshelter.com for more details – come out, enjoy a fun and exciting evening, and take an active role in helping those in need within our community! facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity? Does taking a sip of cold water have you grimacing in pain? And does the mere thought of biting in to a crunchy carrot make you put your hands to your mouth in protection? Sounds like you’re suffering from tooth sensitivity – a common ailment that tends to affect adult teeth at some point. Tooth sensitivity is a frequent complaint that dentists hear from patients, and the cause can be varied but the symptoms– shooting pain triggered by temperature changes, pressure and acidic door, or a low-grade dull ache just never seem to disappear. If tooth sensitivity is something you deal with on a daily basis you’re all too familiar with the various symptoms – but are probably more interested in knowing what causes tooth sensitivity and what you can do to control the often-painful response. Though sensitive teeth is reported in patients of all ages – it is highly common in patients over the age of forty, as the natural aging process regularly increases the sensitivity of teeth due to recession of gums, extensive dentistry and years of clenching and grinding.

to certain stimuli – namely temperature. The discomfort can be brought on by just the slightest exposure to hot or cold substances – and force a patient to avoid certain foods. But are there other causes of tooth sensitivity apart from gum recession? Yes – dental decay can make a tooth overly sensitive to pressure (biting down) and temperature. When a tooth is decayed the protective outer tissue – enamel – has been destroyed by bacteria, exposing the inner softer, less thermally protective tissue, called dentin. Decay can eat away at dentin, until it reaches the nerve of the tooth, causing the tooth to ache constantly. Teeth that are fractured and cracked can also become extremely sensitive, as any amount of pressure will cause flexion of the fractured area.

Gum Recession is probably the number one cause of tooth sensitivity. In a healthy mouth, the gums sit tight around the neck of a tooth – like a turtle-neck – and completely cover the root of the tooth. When the root is protected by gingival tissue the hundreds of microscopic openings – called tubules – are also protected from stimuli such as temperature and acids. However, a lack of adequate brushing and flossing, poor tooth alignment, and a habit of clenching and grinding can result in gum recession and the exposure of root surfaces and tubules. When roots are exposed the tooth can experience heightened sensitivity

So what can you do about tooth sensitivity? Talk to your dentist or dental hygienist about your symptoms so they can provide solutions that will control discomfort and prevent further sensitivity.

Hi All. Larry here. Well, how was that for an amazing August? Roger and I have had one of the best summers on record. It was hot. It was summery. We played it smart and followed the guidelines on how to do heat properly as a diabetic. We did our walking and some serious swimming. We ate mostly a good diabetic diet, with a few strays on special days. Now, going into fall and winter, let’s all remember about indoor walking in Strathmore. We will do some research and do another schedule up next month for Strathmore and Langdon and Chestermere this year. Let’s get a great start on a healthy and happy winter. Roger decided that he wanted to pretend he was going back to school too. HA! That old sole is way past school age, says I. Never too old to learn, says Roger. Roger won that one – hands down and feet up! He did some work on a FIND A WORD to share with us. I thought I would let him be the boss (this time) and share it with you. Much to my surprise, I really enjoyed it. I hope you will too. Now there are mumblings coming from him about giving you a crossword to play with. It may just happen. First off, I want to mention that, for most people, getting six pack abs is not an easy task. It requires dedication, but it is possible! Below is a general 2-step guide that, if followed religiously for 3 months, will produce results. Step 1: Nutrition

This is the single most important part of the puzzle, hands down. You can have the most impressive set of abs, but if they're covered with a layer of fat, you won't see them Break up your day with 5 or 6 mini-meals because this jump starts your metabolism. And stop eating the food that is preventing results: white bread, loads of pasta, soda, candy, fast food, hydrogenated oils, sugars and fructose corn syrup. Instead, replace them with foods that will help you reach your goal: oatmeal, olive oil, whole grain breads, fruits, vegetables, nuts, eggs, natural peanut butter, chicken, fish, protein and water. Be realistic - you'll slip here and there, but make a conscious effort to radically improve your eating habits because getting a six pack will be impossible if you don't.

All Your Hair Care Needs

Tip: mix up your workout routine every 2 weeks to keep your body guessing and changing. Add or take away different weight or ab exercises, or at the very least, vary the weight, reps or form of cardio you do. Well, there you have it. Follow the above for 3 months religiously, and while results will vary from person to person, you will experience improvement. It will take dedication on your part, but imagine the feeling you'll get when you look in the mirror and like what you see.

The last exercise you need to incorporate into your workout is ab exercises. Aim to work your abs a minimum of 3 times a week. There are a ton of different ab exercises you can do so try to find 3 or so that you enjoy doing so you can mix it up. You can find some great ab exercises on the same website.

The cardio you do can be anything: walking, running, biking, swimming...whichever cardio you don't mind doing so that you'll stick with it. Aim for 30-45 minutes, a minimum of 2 times a week. Weightlifting is important because 3 pounds of added muscle burns as many calories as a 1 mile jog, and this is while you're just sitting around! Aim for 30-45 minutes, a minimum of 2 times a week. If you're confused as to what exercises to do for each body part, make sure to contact one of the many fitness experts in this issue! Moderate Hearing Loss

Patients with moderate hearing loss have difficulty hearing sound between 40-69 decibels. Moderate hearing loss would result in an increased level of symptoms as displayed with mild hearing loss.

Severe Hearing Loss

Patients with severe hearing loss have difficulty hearing sound between 70-89 decibels. Those suffering from severe hearing loss may only be able to communicate if the speaker is in close proximity with increased volume, without the interruption of ambient noise.

Profound Hearing Loss

Profound hearing loss/deafness means patients can not hear up to 90 decibels. This is the most severe form of hearing loss making speech inaudible with patients becoming reliant on visual communication.

I found this on Instagram and it made so much sense to me, so I thought I share it with

A Thought for The Month of September:

“Why Are Many of Us Struggling to Be Happy with Aging?” As I was lying in bed deciding whether or not to get up, a thought came to mind; “Why am I not as happy as I used to be and why do I feel old?” At the age of 52 going on 53 in about 2 weeks, I have been thinking a lot of aging. Why does my body not want to cooperate with me as much as it did when I was 25-40? My dad, who is 83, asked me the other day, “Has your husband got old yet?” (He is 56). I thought to myself, “What kind of question is that?” But that is what I hear all the time now, and I hear more and more about aging and how the older you get, everything seems to break down (the body, mind and soul). Why do I find myself not as happy as I was about a year ago? I find myself thinking of getting old and how my body is falling apart, finding that parts of my body are not working as well as they did a year ago. Lower back degeneration, bursitis in the right hip that affects the rest of the right leg, knee and over all

the whole body! The body is challenging me even more than it ever did. I am wanting to do so much more, but as I do it, I feel the pain, and it restricts me from finishing off my task at hand. So in not finishing my task, I feel like I let myself and others down. In return, day after day, becoming more and more sad and unhappy! So I sit and wonder, “How, as a Massage Therapist for 9 years, can I keep doing what I am doing? How much more will it take before I call it quits? When does my husband want to retire? How can I keep pushing and working so hard to get ahead when my body does not work as well as it used to? Why is everything around me making me feel sad, old, sore, pain and just not wanting to wish or look forward to a future?” This is very DEEP! I’ve taken courses on self-development on this very important topic, but somehow, and somewhere, I forgot about how powerful our minds really can be! We are creators of every thought, feeling and action. So when we hear others talk about aging and

how they feel old, sore, and in pain, and how some of their parts of the body are not working; when we allow yourselves to also feel what they feel, we are creating it to become true for us too! Aging is all around us, and yes as we age, we change into a different person, but that has always happened! So what is the difference NOW? I have forgotten that my mind, thoughts and feelings are the creator of my time and space; and if I am feeling, thinking and letting others influence me to respond to all their OLD talk, I too will feel, act and live that way too! We are always surrounded with a negative perception of aging, and as I age, I am finding it being talked about more and more. But I have realized that I am in control of what I really think, feel and act on, and this is what makes it come true in my life. So reminding myself that I HAVE control and turning every negative into a positive will not be easy and I will have to work on it, but I have done this in the past, and I can do it again and it will become easier and easier the more I do it!

Here is what I am changing today: My thoughts about getting OLD and how my body will continue to work with me! Here are some positive affirmations for me; I hope they can help you too! • “I am as young as I want to feel!” • “My body regenerates and heals all necessary parts on a cellular level to help me do what I need to do.” • “I am happy that I can create change with a thought, feeling and action and in doing so, I change my life to peace, health, prosperity, success, and happiness!” • “My body becomes more flexible and free so I can do more as I need it to!” • “My mind is sharp, clear, and has a great memory for names and places, and I make sound decisions.”

IRIDOLOGY Our eyes radiate the beauty inside of us, and take in what beauty is around us. They say your eyes are the windows to your soul, but what does that mean, precisely? By looking into someone’s eyes, can you truly tell who they are inside? Iridologists believe this to be true; if your eyes are not healthy, they are telling you something else is going on physically. This is the concept behind iridology. Iridologists believe they can use charts to distinguish between healthy systems and organs in the body and those that are overactive, inflamed, or distressed. This information demonstrates a patient's susceptibility towards certain illnesses, reflects past medical problems, or predicts later health problems. Well, I don’t know about all that, but I do know taking care of your eyes is super important. We all know wearing sunglasses and staring at your computer screen all day are not good, but eating the proper nutritional

CARROTS

Carrots and other orange-coloured fruits and vegetables promote eye health and protect vision. Beta-carotene, a type of vitamin A that gives these foods their orange hue, helps the retina and other parts of the eye to function smoothly.

They're packed with lutein and zeaxanthin—antioxidants that, studies show, lower the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts.

EGGS

The yolk is a prime source of lutein and zeaxanthin—plus zinc, which also helps reduce your macular degeneration risk.

CITRUS AND BERRIES

These fruits are powerhouses of vitamin C, which has been shown to reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration, and cataracts.

ALMONDS

They're filled with vitamin E, which slows macular degeneration, research shows. One handful (an ounce) provides about half of your daily dose of E.

FATTY FISH

Tuna, salmon, mackerel, anchovies, and trout are rich in DHA, a fatty acid found in your retina—low levels of which have been linked to dry eye syndrome. Sunlight works wonders for your amazing eyes and believe it or not, some have even cured their eyes of many ailments using sunlight therapy along with proper diet and rest! I truthfully have never heard of sun therapy for eyes (will be doing some research). Eye exercises such as looking up, down, across and around are good and of course, sleep and adequate rest are vital to restoring the eyes each day! Of course, there are big no-noes for eyes too! Like smoking (pretty much bad for your whole body), trans & saturated fats, processed foods such as white flour products & sugars, preservatives, flavourings, and chemicals in beauty products. As with anything in life, we carry on blindly wondering our way through the mine fields polluting our body with processed foods, and abusing ourselves. But, it is never too late to change, starting today! Let’s make a change, at least have a carrot, leafy green salad with hard boiled eggs for lunch, maybe two or three times a week. Sounds good to me. Kathryn Hartwell

Spinach is number one on the list for macular degeneration. Carrots, avocados, kale, broccoli, eggs, tomatoes, sunflower seeds, and garlic are also great. A glass of fresh vegetable juice including greens and carrots will work wonders to preserve eye health and keep them looking clear and bright at the same time.

My goal for 2017 was to lose just 10 pounds. Only 15 to go.. I ate salad for dinner… well, it was mostly croutons & tomatoes... really just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce... and cheese. FINE, it was a pizza. I ate a pizza.

How to prepare tofu: 1. Throw it in the trash. 2. Grill some meat.

I just did a week's worth of cardio after walking into a spider web. I don't mean to brag, but… I finished my 14-day diet food in 3 hours and 20 minutes.

A recent study has found women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it.

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel. Senility has been a smooth transition for me.

Remember back when we were kids and every time it was below zero out they closed the schools? Me neither.

I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or smart or talented… I forgot where I was going with this.

Learning how to Operate a Motorcycle

erator out there with so many other vehicles on the road. The process is quick for some, and others struggle to learn how to operate one. It comes down to learning the skills and believing in your ability to make it happen.

The idea of riding a motorcycle is to allow you the freedom of the open air while traveling. It can also be a very inexpensive way to travel or to commute. Learning how to operate a motorcycle is very important. You don’t want to be an inexperienced op-

Keep in mind that the motorcycle you learn on is going to affect how well you are able to learn to operate it. Make sure it is designed to fit you. This can be somewhat tricky because many people learn how to ride a motorcycle on one that belongs to someone else. However, you need to make sure the motorcycle isn’t too heavy for you. It is important that you are able to touch the ground with both feet. Reaching the gas, brakes, and handle bars are essential as well. It is a good investment to find an inexpensive used bike that fits your body well. Once you have successfully learned to ride it well, consider upgrading to a better bike. Make sure you learn from someone you trust and who is patient. Nothing can add to your insecurity as someone watching over you, especially if they are concerned about you damaging their motorcycle. If you don’t have someone you can comfortably learn from, then you are wasting your time. It may be a worthwhile investment to enroll in a motorcycle instruction course and

learn from someone who is trained to teach this skill. Once you have managed the basics of motorcycle riding, continue practicing. Just like driving a vehicle, you will get better as you practice. Avoid riding on busy streets, highways, or interstates until you are very comfortable with your riding skills. Practice changing lanes, turns, curves, and sudden stops as these are all things you will experience once you are operating your motorcycle on the open road. Practice riding your motorcycle in a variety of weather situations. This will give you some very important motorcycle skills that you won’t get anywhere else. You will be amazed at how different your motorcycle operates on a sunny day versus a very windy day. Being prepared for a variety of riding conditions is going to make you a much better operator. In time, you will feel comfortable enough for long trips, maybe even to some of the wonderful motorcycle rallies that take place each year. If you start small and practice hard, learning to operate a motorcycle will be a very rewarding experience for you. Too many beginners want a new motorcycle or the same power as their friends. They either find the motorcycle to be too much to handle or seriously injure themselves riding it. This can also cause you to lose interest in the idea of learning to ride it, and result in your selling it. The motorcycle learning process can be a great experience if you aren’t in a hurry to be driving it fast on major road ways. Like anything else, your skills will only improve as you practice and learn from your own mistakes. Operating a motorcycle is a challenge that you will proudly succeed at if you work hard and follow the safety precautions of the road.

Communication Problem A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce, and asked, "What are the grounds for your divorce?" She replied, "About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property with a stream running by." "No," he said. "I mean, what is the foundation of this case?" "It is made of concrete, brick and mortar," she responded. "I mean," he continued. "What are your relations like?" "I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband's parents." "Do you have a real grudge?" "No," she replied. "We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one." "Please," he tried again. "Is there any infidelity in your marriage?" "Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don't necessarily like the music, but the answer to your questions is ‘yes’." "Ma'am, does your husband ever beat you up?" "Yes," she responded, "about twice a week he gets up earlier than I do." Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, "Lady, why do you want a divorce?" "Oh, I don't want a divorce," she replied. "I've never wanted a divorce. My husband does. He said he can't communicate with me."

There’s always something special about seeing a local business take off and find success. It’s representative of so much: a local friend or neighbour, working hard to bring an idea to successful fruition; a community, coming together to support one of its members; and the idea that at the end of the day, if you have a good idea coupled with the drive and initiative to see it through, you too can find success by following your entrepreneurial dreams. There are so many incredible, innovative small businesses throughout our communities that we’re proud to include in our Business Directory issue this month, but we wanted to take a bit of time to highlight one that strikes us as particularly unique: Lakeshore Importers. Lakeshore Importers is the brainchild of Kyle Lazurko, long-time Chestermere resident and businessman. This endeavour is one that caught our attention for a variety of reasons. First, it provides exceptional value for members of our community. “Lakeshore Importers makes wholesale prices available to everyone,” Lazurko told me, when I got the opportunity to chat with him about his business. “We operate digitally, with no physical retail space required, so we’re able to save people money on items that you’d normally expect to pay a lot more for.” Lazurko takes advantage of this lack of overhead to pass on some incredible savings to his customers, offering a handful of items on his website each week that people can check out and place an order for. Once each week-long ordering period is up, Lazurko places a bulk order himself from his suppliers, at which point his customers are able to come by and pick everything up. This means that in addition to not requiring a physical retail space, Lazurko is also able to operate without maintaining a warehouse or any sort of space for overstocked goods – he never has to sit on any inventory, because each order is fully converted into sales before it even lands in Chestermere! This new approach to retail – making use of a digital storefront, rather than a traditional, brick-and-mortar retail shop – is a relaThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

tively novel idea, and one that’s been picking up steam in the wake of big-time success stories like Amazon and its ilk. To recognize and jump on this trend as it’s really beginning to take off shows tremendous foresight on behalf of Lazurko, and no small amount of nerve. Lazurko takes things even one step further than some of his competitors by not only removing the overhead associated with a physical retail space, but by also putting delivery charges on the chopping block as well, thereby doing essentially everything he can to keep costs as rock-bottom low as possible. Being an industry leader isn’t for the faint of heart – but in Lazurko’s case, the leap of faith is paying off. “We just celebrated our one-year anniversary a couple of days ago, and saw some very real success during this most recent quarter. It’s been a roller coaster ride, for sure, but it’s been fun!” Lazurko reported to me proudly, when I asked about how the company’s doing. While some entrepreneurs are able to find success simply by being in the right place at the right time, that’s hardly the case when it comes to Lazurko. His business’s accomplishments rely entirely on his savvy and ability to predict his customer base’s needs and expectations, each and every week. Because of the limited selection offered by Lazurko during each ordering period – necessary in order to keep the process and catalogue streamlined and manageable – it’s important that each item he picks out to put on offer is a homerun. “You’d be surprised,” Lazurko told me, “but right now, it’s all about Christmas. Everyone’s back to school, and other stores are starting to roll out their lights and decorations, so it’s important that we’ve got those same items available.” Being familiar with small business ownership and the inner-workings of retail, I found myself earnestly impressed with Lazurko’s knowledge and prowess in these areas, and told him so. That’s when he let me know that even though he’s fairly young, he’s had plenty of time to gain experience on the subject – he started his first business when he was only 14! “It was called Canadian Popcorn Supplies,” he told me. “I loved popcorn machines, and so I started this company out of my house. I sold machines, kernels, supplies – everything you’d need!” he laughed, reflecting on this early venture. “It was fun, and I learned a lot about business.” Lazurko’s come a long way since those early days selling popcorn, that’s for sure! Be sure to check out his website, www.lakeshoreimporters.com, and maybe place an order if you see something you like. There’s nothing quite like supporting a small, well-run business – especially when the owner is a hard-working local like Kyle Lazurko!

Laughter and Your Health When thinking about alternative medicine, most people picture plants, crystals, needles, maybe some bugs and leeches, but few realize that jokes, humour and comedy are truly medicines in their own right. It has long been established that optimists live longer than pessimists, but now there is some hard evidence that people with a better sense of humour also have longer and healthier lives. Your "stay healthy" plan should include a joke and a 20-minute comedy show, to go with the broccoli and carrots.

There are now various associations and physicians specialized in the so-called therapeutic humour, who are still investigating the roles of laughter in our lives. Perhaps the most obvious of these roles is that related to the social life - jokes often allow people to connect and to bond, and sharing a good laughter is a good method to integrate in a team, to get along with the coworkers, neighbours and so on. This function is vital from the point of view of mental health, since it reduces loneliness and, with it, depression and other problems associated with it. You don't have to be trained in stand-up comedy in order to say something funny, sometimes all you need is a change of perspective or the courage to make fun at your own expense.

Blessed are the weird people, the poets and misfits, the artists, the writers and music makers, the dreamers and the outsiders for they force us to see the world differently.

Humour is an invaluable asset in crisis situations, when it helps us calm down and reduce the levels of stress (and all the negative effects stress has on health). It is often considered that, among patients with very severe diseases, those with an upbeat approach, who are capable of making jokes about their situations, have the best chances to defeat the illness. So far, there have been no scientific studies to prove this, but the patients themselves report feeling better after joining an activity with humourous potential, even if it's just watching a comedy show together with some friends or with other patients. Recent research suggests that laughter influences more than our mental framework, it actually has a positive effect on the physical aspect as well. It has been widely accepted, for some time, that laughter increases the pain resistance level, but the theory is still not proven. In fact, very few studies have yet been made about the relation between comedy and health, but those existing seem to indicate that a good joke may lower the blood pressure, improve memory and cognitive functions and boost the immune system. Moreover, these results are not short-term only: it seems that a good sense of humour may protect you against heart diseases and alter your biochemical state to a level where the organism produces more antibodies. The lack of research in the field is due to the fact that people have always assumed that laughter is good for your health (along with an apple a day and a breath of fresh air), but little has been done to analyze this in depth.

If you decide to use laughter as a therapeutic method, the first obvious issue is that there are no harmful side effects, and you've got nothing to lose. The second issue is that you can actually improve your sense of humour in time, same as any other skill or ability, by constant training and exposure to jokes and comedy. Next time you go to the movies, buy a ticket for a comedy, no matter how dumb the poster looks. When you read the paper, don't forget to check out their daily cartoons. Spend ten minutes every day reading jokes, and, when you find some you like, share them with your friends. (And when your boss catches you reading jokes instead of working, tell him it's just therapy, he can't stop your from taking your medication at work, right?). Last but not least, try to find the funny side of the small things that happen every day around you - there is always something absurd or plain stupid going on right near you, which may provide five minutes of good laugher, which, in turn, may unblock some arteries and keep the heart attack far away.

and vengeful, as well as the skeptic and cynic attitude, which is often the front for deep depression and indifference. Jokes directed at other people are also "bad" humour, along with ethnic, racial and sexist jokes, which are born out of frustration, not out of optimism and cheerfulness. Also, people who often make fun of themselves hide a low self esteem, which is only worsened with every funny joke they invent (there is a good reason why clowns and successful comedy actors are often perceived as sad and depressed in their real lives).

SECRET TIP 8: IRONING

Housekeeping Tips for New Mothers Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the first session of Housekeeping Tips for New Mothers. If you're a Martha Stewart type of housekeeper, this column is NOT for you. However, for the rest of you, this is your chance to learn 15 Secret Shortcuts to Good Housekeeping that your mother never told you. SECRET TIP 1: DUCT TAPE

No home should be without an ample supply. Not only is it handy for plumbing repairs, but it's a great way to hem drapes, tablecloths, clothes, just about anything. No muss, no fuss. Time: 2-3 minutes

SECRET TIP 2: OVENS

If you think ovens are just for baking, think again. Ovens represent at least 9 cubic feet of hidden storage space, which means they're a great place to shove dirty dishes, dirty clothes, or just about anything you want to get out of sight when company's coming. CAUTION: check oven before turning it on… IF you turn it on. Time: 2 minutes

SECRET TIP 3: CLOTHES DRYERS

Like Secret Tip 2, except bigger. CAUTION: Avoid hiding flammable objects here. Time: 2.5 minutes

SECRET TIP 4: WASHING MACHINES & FREEZERS Like Secret Tip 3, except even bigger. Time: 3 minutes

SECRET TIP 5: DUST RUFFLES

No bed should be without one. Devotees of Martha Stewart believe dust ruffles exist to keep dust out from under a bed or to help coordinate the colourful look of a bedroom. The rest of us know a dust ruffle's highest and best use is to hide whatever you've managed to shove under the bed. (Refer to Secret Tips 3, 4, 5.) Time: 4 minutes

SECRET TIP 6: DISHES

Don't use them. Use plastic or paper plates and you won't have to. Time: 1 minute

If an article of clothing doesn't require a full press and your hair does, a curling iron is the answer. In between curling your hair, use the hot wand to iron minor wrinkles out of your clothes. Yes, it really does work, or so I'm told, by other disciples of the 30-Minutes-To-A-Clean-House philosophy. Time: 5 minutes (including curling your hair)

SECRET TIP 9: VACUUMING

Stick to the middle of the room, which is the only place people look. Don't bother vacuuming under furniture. It takes way too long and no one looks there anyway. Time: 5 minutes, entire house; 2 minutes, living room only

SECRET TIP 10: LIGHTING

The key here is low, low, and lower. It's not only romantic, but bad lighting can hide a multitude of dirt. Time: 10 seconds

SECRET TIP 11: BED MAKING Get an old-fashioned waterbed. No one can tell if those things are made up or not, saving you, oh, hundreds of seconds over the course of a lifetime. Time: 0

SECRET TIP 12: SHOWERS, TOILETS, AND SINKS Forget one and two. Concentrate on three. Time: 1 minute

SECRET TIP 13:

If you already knew at least 10 of these tips, don't even think about inviting a Martha Stewart type to your home. ~ This article in unattributed.

Fall is the best time to plan your spring garden, so call Aris Landscape Design to start planning your new landscapes for next spring!

SECRET TIP 7: CLOTHES WASHING (EEWWW)

This secret tip is brought to you by an inventive teenager. When this teen's mother went on a housekeeping strike for a month, the teen discovered you can extend the life of your underwear by two... if you turn them wrong side out and, yes, rerun it.

"Oh, ummmm, let's see," the old man pondered. "You know that flower, you know, the one that smells really nice but has those prickly thorns, what's that flower's name?" "A rose?" asked the neighbour. Just before cake is done, place the topping ingredients in a microwavable bowl and bring to a full boil. Watch that it does not boil over. You can also do this on the stove top, stirring constantly. Remove cake from oven and immediately poke fork holes all over the top. I make them about 2" apart over the whole cake. Pour the hot topping over the cake slowly, allowing the topping to soak into the holes. This makes the cake very moist. Allow cake to cool on counter. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

LUSCIOUS JOYS Autumn and fruit cocktails just kind of go together, somehow. Over the years, all my children have turned their noses up at fruit cocktail, but I think all of that is going to change once I make one of these delicious cakes at the next family gathering! I know a lot of people forgo the canned fruits because of the sugar content – but once in a while is not going to hurt you, and you just need to have a little sweet treat every now and then.

FRUIT COCKTAIL CAKE It's not healthy at all but that is why it tastes so good. The canned fruit adds moisture to the cake and the topping is just plain fattening and delicious. It is a must to heap copious amounts of whipped cream on top. 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 cups flour 2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 2 eggs-slightly beaten 1 14oz can fruit cocktail-with juice Combine all ingredients except the flour and beat together well with an electric hand mixer. Add flour and blend until flour is all absorbed. Grease a 9x13 pan or a 10-12 inch round or spring form pan. Bake cake for approx. 45 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Topping 3/4 cup white sugar 1/2 cup cream 1/2 cup butter 1 tsp vanilla (add after other ingredients have boiled)

Felker - Dunbar Law

JELL-O FRUIT COCKTAIL CAKE 1 (1 lb. 1 oz.) can fruit cocktail

1 (3 oz.) peach Jell-O (dry) 1 sm. pkg. mini marshmallows 1 lemon cake mix Sprinkle Jell-O on the bottom of a greased 9x13 cake pan. Pour fruit cocktail over Jell-O and stir. Then make an even layer of marshmallows over cocktail. Mix lemon cake mix as directed on package. Spread batter over marshmallows. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes. Cool on rack for about 1 hour, and then turn on plate.

Why Should I Make a Budget? You say you know where your money goes and you don’t need it all written down to keep up with it? I issue you this challenge. Keep track of every penny you spend for one month, and I do mean every penny. You will be shocked at what the itty-bitty expenses add up to. Take the total you spent on just one unnecessary item for the month, multiply it by 12 for months in a year and multiply the result by 5 to represent 5 years. That is how much you could have saved AND drawn interest on in just five years. That, my friend, is the very reason all of us need a budget. If we can get control of the small expenses that really don’t matter to the overall scheme of our lives, we can enjoy financial success. The little things really do count. Cutting what you spend on lunch from five dollars a day to three dollars a day on every work day in a five day work week saves $10 a week… $40 a month… $480 a year… $2400 in five years… plus interest! See what I mean? It really IS the little things and you still eat lunch everyday AND that was only one place to save money in your daily living. There are a lot of places to cut expenses if you look for them. Set some specific long-term and short-term goals. There are no wrong answers here. If it’s important to you, then it’s important, period. If you want to be able to make a down payment on a house, start a college fund for your kids, buy a sports car, take a vacation to Aruba… anything… then that is your goal and your reason to get a handle on your financial situation now.

An elderly woman went to her local doctor's office and asked to speak with her doctor. When the receptionist asked why she was there, she replied, "I'd like to get some birth control pills." Taken back, the receptionist thought for a minute and then said, "Excuse me, Mrs. Glenwood, but you're 80 years old. What would you possibly need birth control pills for?" The woman replied, "They help me sleep better." The receptionist considered this for a second, and continued... "How in the world do birth control pills help you sleep?" The woman said, "I put them in my granddaughter's orange juice."

As you know, we in the United Conservative Party Opposition have been observing for years that our Alberta math scores have been declining. Why is this? Are we straying too far from traditional methods of education? There are many sides to this discussion. Are our teachers supposed to be experts in various fields of study and pass that on to our children, or are they simply guides as students follow their own path to knowledge? There are definitely strategies to how our kids are going to learn, and maybe we need to look at the total amount of curriculum a teacher is expected to teach our children in any given module. One would suggest that conventional methods to achieve outcomes should be used, and I believe after speaking with teachers, parents, and students, there is some consensus that this is indeed part of the path forward for our children in learning math.

meaningful understanding of a subject? No, of course not, but it is only a single tool in a math tool kit that teachers within their professional responsibility should have access to and supports for. The question is - are our children learning math? Parents know whether their children are learning or not, and I personally would like to see the metrics showing us that other methodologies of teaching math are truly working. As you know, there is a curriculum review underway. The teachers are the experts and should have access to all the tools in the tool kit. Are memorizing times tables a bad thing to do? I ask this question honestly because I believe feedback is needed. Do children need to see connections in math? Again, what do you think? What about patterns, or understanding how things connect to everyday life? What about financial literacy? Are our children suffering from what is called cognitive overload or too many things at once? John Mighton, the founder of Jump Math, asks these questions. He also brings to light that math should be fun and exciting! These are important questions that are being posed. Many experts have said there should be math-area specialists teaching math. Some food for thought as another school year progresses. I truly admired my math teachers, and they went out of their way to help me as it really was my weakest subject. I will forever be grateful to Mr. Deeter and Mr. Ibach, who were my math teachers in grade 9-12, for never giving up on me, and for spending endless hours as math became more complex. The elections for School Trustee are coming up in October. Please research the candidates, attend the forums, and ask them these questions. And above all, vote! I am reminded of September 11, or 9/11 in 2001, and I remember every day how fortunate I am to live in this society. We should never take our freedoms for granted. As always, we love to hear from you.

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed." "OH NO!" The President exclaims. "That's terrible!" His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands. Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

Recently, an associate reminded me that bad leadership is an oxymoron. "If it's bad, it is not leadership." Thus, when someone holds a position of leadership, it doesn't necessarily mean they should. Although we see and hear a lot of commentaries on those with leadership roles today, it appears society's lost the ability to distinguish between leaders and others. One of the leadership's primary responsibilities is to create more leaders. They encourage others to step up, step out and own their own greatness. In so doing, they empower others to become all they can be releasing the need for position and control.

Instead of a feature wall in paint, why not try using this beautiful

Here are three ways to identify a leader.

RUSTIC LAMINATE

Leaders Show Up

A passion for connecting is evident in those with leadership abilities. They engage with others, allowing them to share their interests, ideas, talents and fervour. This relates to their strong desire to create, contribute and make a difference. Because of this, they crave honest, transparent conversations about issues. Listening is one of the greatest communication skills a leader possesses. Nelson Mandela believed it was important to first listen and then speak.

Leaders Learn

This willingness to listen enables leaders to learn. They respectfully receive feedback as it enables them to discover their strengths and provides them opportunities for growth. Only in failing to listen, do they fail to build trust. Vulnerability allows others to connect on deeper more meaningful levels increasing a leader's ability to help others see the vision and participate in fulfilling it.

At only $3.30/sq.ft, this is a fabulous alternative! Phone: 403-934-4954

Although leadership at one time might have required muscles, today it is about getting along with others. This includes those whose values and opinions may differ from ours. These are skills true leaders are willing to learn and then embrace.

Brian Martin 403.830.0949 Leaders Inspire

Furthermore, individuals willing to take risks by stepping outside of the box inspire us. The person they want to be better than is the person they were yesterday whether that was a month ago or a year ago. In addition, they know courage is not the absence of fear but triumphing over it. They do not allow their fears to stop them from doing what they know is right not for them but for the greater good. "When you let your light shine, you unconsciously give others permission to do the same." Nelson Mandela Finally, leaders want others to show up, be seen, be engaged and dare greatly. Given the polarization and challenges our world is currently experiencing, humanity needs leaders who show up, learn and inspire us. I encourage you to look for these traits in those you elect to govern or consider the possibility that you may be this leader. If so, step up and take the risk. You may never experience the greatness residing with you until you try.

What To Do When Your Home Isn 't Selling When you sell your home, the process is almost like going to a job interview. Selling a home involves presentation, which is one of the key factors that determine the outcome. Although this may sound a bit weird, presentation is a way of life in the world of real estate. Buyers in today's market look for good presentation - many basing their final decisions on it. If the property you are selling comes with a garage, you'll need to go through your garage before you sell your home. Chances are that you store things in your garage, which can easily pile up over time before you realize it. If your garage is in a messy condition, you'll obviously want to clean it up. Buyers look for homes that are in perfect condition, and anything less than perfect will look bad in the eyes of the buyer. Most homes have some truly outstanding features inside of them. You should always do your best to highlight the best features of your

home, instead of just hoping that the buyer understands what they are. The ideal way to bring out the best features of your home is to use the proper lighting. If your home is clean, you can use lighting to bring out the best features in your home, and ensure that they stand out to the buyer. When a potential buyer first pulls up to your home; the first thing he will see is your lawn. If your lawn is trimmed and well taken care of, he will get a good impression right off the bat. If your lawn is a wreck, he may immediately pull away. To give the best impression to the buyer, you should put some thought into how things look. You can always plant flowers around the walkway and throughout the yard, which will look great to a potential buyer. You should also make sure that the entrance into your home is a positive as well. The front door should be in great shape, as well as the entry area into the home. You can add some plants, paintings, and rugs to ensure that your buyer gets a good impression. When the buyer walks through the entry way into your home, you should make sure that the view he or she takes in is a good on. Your biggest goal when showing your home is to ensure that the buyer is pleased. Keep in mind that it may take some time to sell your home. These days, homes can sit on the market for months at a time before they actually sell. If you are having trouble selling your home, you can always reduce the price or simply go back to the basics. Eventually you will sell your home - although it may take more time than you think. Amanda Beattie

Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde-haired woman who knocks everyone's socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm, and who hangs off of Bob's arm and listens intently to his every word. His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, “Bob, how'd you get the trophy girlfriend?” Bob replies, “Girlfriend? She's my wife!” They are knocked over, but continue to ask. “So, how'd you persuade her to marry you?” “I lied about my age,” Bob replies. “What, did you tell her you were only 50?” Bob smiles and says, “No, I told her I was 90.”

Homeowners who are considering re-financing their home may have a wealth of options available to them. However, these same homeowners may find themselves feeling overwhelmed by this wealth of options. This process doesn’t have to be so difficult, though. Homeowners can greatly assist themselves in the process by taking a few simple steps. First, the homeowner should determine his refinancing goals. Next, the homeowner should consult with a re-financing expert and finally, the homeowner should be aware that re-financing is not always the best solution. Determine Your Goals for Re-Financing The first step in any re-financing process should be for the homeowner to determine his goals and why he is considering re-financing. There are many different answers to this question and none of the answers are necessarily right or wrong. The most important thing is that the homeowner is making a decision that helps him achieve his financial goals. While there are no right or wrong answer as to why re-financing should be considered, there are, however, certain reasons for re-financing

Are You Considering Re-Financing?

The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

that are very common. These reasons include: * Reducing monthly mortgage payments * Consolidating existing debts * Reducing the amount of interest paid over the course of the loan * Repaying the loan quicker * Gaining equity quicker Although the reasons listed above are not the only reason homeowners might consider re-financing, they are some of the most popular reasons. They are included in this article for the purpose of getting the reader thinking. The reader may find their mortgage re-financing strategy fits into one of the above goals or they may have a completely different reason for wanting to re-finance. The reason for wanting to re-finance is not as important as determining this reason. This is because a homeowner, or even a financial advisor, will have a difficult time determining the best re-financing option for a homeowner if he does not know the goals of the homeowner.

Consult with a Re-Financing Expert Once a homeowner has figured out why they want to re-finance, the homeowner should consider meeting with a re-financing expert to determine the best refinancing strategy. This will likely be a strategy that is financially sound but is also still geared to meeting the needs of the homeowner. Homeowners who feel as though they are particularly well versed in the subject of re-financing might consider skipping the option of consulting with a re-financing expert. However, this is not recommended because even the most educated homeowner may not be aware of the newest re-financing options being offered by lenders. While not understanding all the options may not seem like a big deal, it can have a significant impact. Homeowners may not even be aware of mistakes they are making but they may hear of friends who re-financed under similar conditions and receive more favourable terms. Hearing these scenarios can be quite disheartening for some homeowners especially if they could have saved considerably more while re-financing.

Consider Not Re-Financing as a Viable Option Homeowners who are considering re-financing may realize the importance of evaluating a number of different re-financing options to determine what option is best, but these same homeowners may not realize they should also carefully consider not re-financing as an option. This is often referred to as the “do nothing” option because it refers to the conditions that will exist if the homeowner does not make a change in their mortgage situation. For each re-financing option considered, the homeowner should determine the estimated monthly payment, amount of interest paid during the course of the loan, year in which the loan will be fully repaid and the amount of time the homeowner will have to remain in the home to recoup closing costs associated with re-financing. Homeowners should also determine these values for the current mortgage. This can be very helpful for comparison purposes. Homeowners can compare these results and often the best option is quite clear from these numeric calculations. However, if the analysis does not yield a clear-cut answer, the homeowner may have to evaluate secondary characteristics to make the best possible decision.

Fall

many big make-work projects in September, like building a fence... allow yourself and the kids to adjust to all of your fall programs. Don't be overwhelmed by all of the fees for school and sports; often there are payment plan options - just ask! You will not be alone – programs are designed for families, and organizers understand how stressful this time of year can be. Ask about cancellation options as well – there is nothing worse than paying for a years’ worth of piano only to discover your child has 2 left hands... not everything is for everyone!

Back to School Routine Everything has a season; words we are able to embrace it because it's simple. As much as we love all that summer brings our families, there is something to be said for routine, and there is comfort in knowing what each day will bring, even if it is full of activities.

The changing seasons are a great time to spruce up your front door with a new mat, different cushions on the couch and start cleaning out those flower beds before the snow flies. Remember, to everything there is a season; a time to plant, grow and harvest – embrace every season. The season of pumpkin spice lattes, amazing colour changes, crisp morning air and earlier nights. Welcome Fall!

As we enter September, take the time to reflect on all the joys and memories summer brought your family and reflect on the year before... what worked last year and what could be tweaked to make the transition into fall and winter more seamless? What are some things you could do to simplify fall – is it big cooks, meal planning, a colour-coded family calendar, hiring a cleaner? Any or all of the above can help seasonal transitions go smoother; don't be afraid to try, tweak where needed and modify to work best for your family.

Let's talk profit first. Profit is the one reason that most people get into this business. The days are long and the work is hard. This is definitely not the type of work one would ordinarily undertake for the simple love of getting one's hands dirty. This is real work that leaves you bone weary at the end of the day. However, when all the work is done and you get around to making the sell, you will find that the profit involved in a successful flip is well worth the effort you've put into the process. The good news is that the savvy investor can still manage to make money even when the situation may not work out quite as planned. This is yet another benefit to flipping real estate. If the flip doesn't work out, there is always the option of leasing to own the property or renting the property out. The profits in these situations are considerable less than a straightout flip but it can prevent financial ruin that is often the risk of a flip gone wrong. The fact that there are options and that you aren't necessarily left ruined at the end of a bad flip is definitely a benefit. There aren't many types of investments that allow you the option to save yourself the way real estate does.

Benefits of Flipping Real Estate

One of the intangible benefits of flipping houses is that you are, in essence, working for yourself. In other words, you do not have to punch a time clock or worry about overtime (at least not on your part). This can be a bad thing too, if you lack the discipline required to get the job done. However, most of us will view this is a huge check in the pros column when deciding whether or not to take the plunge into the wonderful and frightening world of real estate investing.

The obvious benefit and sought-after benefit of flipping real estate is the profit. This is one incredibly tangible benefit, particularly when the profits are large and quick to come your way. Of course, there are risks. Most ventures that offer high profit also come with a high degree of risk. Money, however, is not the only benefit that can be associated with flipping real estate, though it is certainly the one on most investors' minds when they get into this line of work.

Even though this is a business that requires a lot of work in order to turn an attractive profit, there is some satisfaction at the end of the day involved in knowing that you are working for yourself and not to make someone else wealthy or in order to punch a time clock. That feeling of satisfaction is one that you should hang onto when the brand-new toilet you've just installed becomes a geyser. Of course, there are mistakes along the way, what other job keeps you on your toes quite like this one? Real estate investing, house flipping in particular, can be one of the most frustrating types of investments a soul can pursue. At the same time, it can also be one of the most rewarding mentally, spiritually, and financially. This is something you should keep in mind when deciding whether or not this is the right path for you.

A Doctor was addressing a large audience in Tampa. “The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. However, there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?” After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, “Wedding Cake.”

The Appointment

"Your Honour, I had a mammogram appointment, which I actually kept. I was met by this perky little clipboard carrier smiling from ear to ear and she tilted her head to one side and crooned, 'Hi! I'm Belinda! All I need you to do is step into this room right here, strip to the waist, then slip on this gown. Everything clear?" I thought to myself, 'Belinda, try decaf. This ain't rocket science.' Belinda then skipped away to prepare the chamber of horrors. "With the right side finished, Belinda flipped me (literally) to the left and said, 'Hmm, can you stand on your tippy toes and lean in a tad so we can get everything?' Fine. I was freezing, bruised, and out of air, so why not use the remaining circulation in my legs and neck to finish me off? My body was in a holding pattern that defied gravity (with my other breast wedged between those two 4 inch pieces of square glass) when I heard and felt a zap! "Complete darkness, the power was off! "Belinda said, 'Uh-oh, maintenance is working, bet they hit a snag.' Then she headed for the door. I yelled after her, 'Excuse me! You're not leaving me in this vise alone are you?' Belinda kept going and said, "Oh, you fussy puppy...the door's wide open so you'll have the emergency hall lights. I'll be right back.' Before I could shout NOOOO!, She disappeared. And that's exactly how Bubba and Earl, 'maintenance men extraordinaire' found me... half-naked with part of me dangling from the Jaws of Life and the other part smashed between glass! "After exchanging a polite Hi, how's it going type greeting, Bubba (or possibly Earl) asked, to my utter disbelief, if I knew the power was off. Trying to disguise my hysteria, I replied with as much calmness as possible, 'Uh, yes, I did but thanks anyway.' "'OK, you take care now," Bubba replied and waved goodbye as though I'd been standing in the line at the grocery store. Two hours later, Belinda breezes in wearing a sheepish grin. Making no attempt to suppress her amusement, she said, 'Oh I am sooo sorry! The power came back on and I totally forgot about you! And silly me, I went to lunch. Are we upset?' "And that, Your Honour, is exactly how her head ended up between the clamps..." The judge could hardly contain her laughter as she said, "Case Dismissed!"

While conducting some business at the Court House, I overheard a lady, who had been arrested for assaulting a Mammogram Technician, say, "Your Honour, I'm guilty but... there were extenuating circumstances." The female Judge said, sarcastically, "I'd certainly like to hear those extenuating circumstances." I did too, so I listened as the lady told her story.
