Food Tips Ripen fruit faster. Drop unripe fruit (green bananas, crunchy peaches, rock-solid plums) into a paper bag and fold down the top. Ethylene gas emitted by the fruit will be trapped inside the paper and speed up the ripening process. Ripen fruit even faster. Bananas emit more ethylene gas than other fruits and all fruits emit more gas the riper they are. Want to eat that pear for breakfast but afraid you’ll break a tooth? No problem! Just toss it in a bag with a ripe banana. You’ll have pear juice dripping down your chin in no time! Extend the life of your bananas. Cover the stem-end of your bunch of bananas with plastic wrap. Each time you go to remove a banana, just unwrap the plastic and replace. This will keep your fruit from browning for an additional three to five days. Extend it even further. Separate your bunch and wrap each individual banana with its own piece of plastic wrap to maximize ripening time without having to freeze or otherwise alter the flavour of your precious bananas. Peeling stubborn citrus fruits. Sometimes the rind comes right off and it’s like unwrapping a juicy, delicious, citrusy present. Other times it chips away in an endless pile of tiny, frustrating bits of peel. If you’re like most of us and prefer option number one, roll your orange around on a hard surface for thirty seconds or so to soften up its skin before digging in. Works like a charm! Instantly chill wine without diluting it. Slide a few grapes onto a toothpick and put it in the freezer. Later, you can use this as a pretty garnish that will chill down your wine without diluting it. Keep tomatoes fresher longer. Don’t refrigerate them (that actually makes them rot faster!). Simply store tomatoes stem-side down to keep air and moisture from escaping through the cut stem. Check them for freshness. Not sure how long that carton of eggs has been in the refrigerator? Can’t find an expiration date to save your life? Not a problem. Place your eggs in the bottom of a pot, fill with cold water, and observe. If they stay peacefully on the bottom, they’re still fresh. Any eggs that float to the top… not so much. Easily peel hard-boiled eggs. Add vinegar to the water while boiling. Vinegar will soak into the eggshells and break the chemical bond between the white and the inside of the shell. Keep brown sugar soft. Drop a piece of orange peel into an airtight storage container with your brown sugar. This will keep the sugar from hardening and sticking together. Soften up hard brown sugar. Pop that brick of hardened brown sugar into the microwave next to a glass of water and turn it on. The resulting moisture inside the microwave will loosen up the sugar and make it pliable again. Keep ice cream from becoming ice crust. Position a piece of wax paper over the top of the container before you put the lid on it. This will form a better seal (like the one you peeled off when you first opened the carton) and keep out the ice crystals. Extend the life of your nuts. Once they’re exposed to air, nuts tend to go bad faster than when they were safe in their shells. Prevent this by putting them in the freezer. It won’t spoil the flavour, but it will keep the oils in the nuts from going rancid. Clean out the coffee maker. Over time, crud builds up inside the parts and pieces of a coffee maker. Fill the tank with equal parts vinegar and water, and then turn it on. Repeat this process one or two times for really gunky machines. (Also, remember to remove coffee and / or paper filters first!) Safely scrub wooden cutting boards. Sprinkle coarse ground salt over the entire board then use half of a lemon in place of a scrub sponge. The salt will help to loosen stuck-on food while the lemon soaks into and cleanses the wood.

The REPs Stories Musings

Suzanne Shaver

It is Sunday afternoon and I will be spending the next few hours or more reviewing the 85th issue of the magazine, looking for changes and revisions before it goes to print next week. I am only about half way through and I had an overwhelming feeling of how lucky I was to even be a part of this whole experience. The wonderful and exceptional people who have been brought into our lives since the beginning of this great adventure are quite astounding. As I read the columns from our contributors, I feel a trust or faith or something in regards to the “real good” in people. I was in Arizona when the event happened in Ottawa and I think it may have changed all of us! Coming home and reading through the magazine and listening to the voices of the amazing people who have been brought into our lives because of a small idea that grew into a real dream gives me inspiration. Maybe I’m feeling a little melancholy and I know for a fact that our readers understand ‘The Newsy” and support us, which makes us feel so special you cannot imagine. Isn’t it all about just being there for each other? I know it seems silly to say, but it’s not just about business; it’s about people and making a difference. Having a voice to share and having all these special people being a part of our dream is kind of cool!! Thank you all readers, advertisers and contributors for being a part of our dream. Believe it can happen!! Kathryn, Aleesha and Denise It’s official: Shopping local is a survival strategy. It has been suggested that shopping local helps retain businesses in your area. This results in having a potential source of supplies available closer before or during emergencies or disasters. Quicker than waiting for disaster relief, supply from a distance, etc.

Crazy Volunteer Project of the Month NASA Needs Volunteers to Stay in Bed for 15 Weeks Straight NASA is offering you the chance to help assist in the future of manned spaceflight, and all you have to do is confine yourself to a hospital bed for three months or so. The space agency has an ongoing bed rest study and they need test subjects. Who wouldn’t want to lie in bed for a 15 weeks and get paid for doing it? But there are plenty of catches, according to researchers Ronita Cromwell and John Neigut with the Flight Analogs Project, which is based out of the Johnson Space Center. This long-term bed rest study calls for participants who are non-smokers in healthy physical condition and who match the makeup of astronauts to help NASA document how the human body reacts to 70 days in a bed rest position. They specifically say that they don’t want couch potatoes. That’s a shame, because I was already preparing my CV.

With a very seductive voice, a wife asked her husband, “Have you ever seen twenty dollars all crumpled up?” “No,” said her husband. She gave him a sexy little smile, unbuttoned the top three buttons of her blouse and slowly reached down in her cleavage created by a soft, silky push-up bra and pulled out a crumpled twenty dollar bill. He took the crumpled twenty dollar bill from her and smiled approvingly. She then asked, “Have you ever seen a hundred dollars all crumpled up?” “No I haven’t,” he said, an anxious tone in his voice. She gave him another sexy little smile, pulled up her skirt, seductively reached into her tight, sheer underwear and pulled out a crumpled hundred-dollar bill. He took the crumpled hundred-dollar bill and started breathing a little quicker with anticipation. “Now,” she said, “Have you ever seen 50,000 dollars all crumpled up?” “No way!” he said, becoming even more aroused and excited, to which she replied: “Go look in the garage.”

much, but was tickled when they decided “not half bad” worked for them, asking me to continue with regular contributions. There were two mandates with this assignment – use the themes of each month’s publication and try for some humour. So far the themes have worked and give me a starting point for what to write. The humor element is in the eye of the beholder. I amuse me but I may be somewhat biased. Certainly a lowly six months in I have my favourites already along with a few cringe worthy items that make me wonder if I need to take a class in proof-reading. Or grammar. Or, quite possibly, humour. But overall it’s working well for me, as it’s an outlet to work on writing with the added benefit of a deadline, which is critical for a world class procrastinator such as myself. Some month I hope to actually meet the deadline.

Stories, Musings, A Little Adventure And Humour

The serious note. This month’s themes were Remembrance Day and Christmas Part 1. Tons of material there, what with my mom’s birthday being Remembrance Day (what to buy, what to buy??) and my chaotic approach to Christmas coupled with the lack of decorating gene required to make my house a haven of Christmassy goodness.

Suzanne is a native Calgarian that lived in Langdon for 15 years before transplanting to Chestermere in 2013. By day she is an accountant with a frustrated creative side that occasionally escapes in form of written musings, which is far more interesting than adding stuff up for people.

I

But then I got thinking that maybe I should spend a little time with Remembrance Day, in the spirit of what it really stands for, not the convenient holiday to remind me to phone my mother. After all, my slaughter of all things Christmas has another month to find a home in, so maybe some Remembrance Day thoughts were in order.

Canada Strong

’m going to go a different direction with this month’s ramblings; giving you a little background and a somewhat serious read for a change. The background first. You’ve been subjected to my ramblings, whether you chose to read them or not, since around May of this year. I’m not a professional writer, although I hope to change that as time goes on, because I truly enjoy it and like to think I might actually be not half bad. No delusions of grandeur here; I’ll settle for “not half bad”. Occasionally I manage to hit the right note on Facebook, with a status that inspires more “likes” than normal, along with comments from friends encouraging me to find a bigger forum than what a Facebook status allows. Apparently the lovely people I call my friends find my thoughts amusing at times. Go figure. When things align nicely, in that I was actually aiming to amuse with what I wrote, I’m pleased to hear this high praise from friends. I’m also assuming they aren’t just humouring me and trying to be nice while rolling their eyes and looking for the “unfollow” button. Writing for our great community magazine came about due to a Facebook posting asking for people that might like to contribute something humourous. With a bit of a “what the h***” attitude I dashed an article off and sent it in. Since the editors don’t have to be nearly as nice as my friends, I wasn’t expecting

My great-uncle Leslie was in the Air Force in World War II, although for a sadly brief time, so I had some vague thoughts of talking about him along with the big picture of what Remembrance Day should stand for. But then the deadline of Wednesday, October 22, 2014 rolled around with my story largely unwritten and our country watching in horror as the events in Ottawa began to play out. There is much talk of “acts of terrorism” and “terrorism on Canadian soil” in relation to this event and at this point, a day after both the tragedy and my deadline, it’s hard to say if that’s valid or not. Was it terrorism or was this just another person that has decided the best way to end their own life is to go out in a hail of bullets and 15 minutes of fame? And does it really matter? At the end of the day, a soldier that pledged to fight for our country lost his life performing his duties and another individual bravely stopped the violence while performing his duties. Both were in relatively ceremonial positions that day but both represent the defense of our country, our freedoms, our lives. That is what Remembrance Day should mean (sorry mom) and we must never forget those that fell before. Buy a poppy; donate to a charity that supports our veterans; hell, hug a veteran if that’s what you choose. But never, ever forget what it takes to live free.

Remembrance Day WE WILL REMEMBER THEM While we go to services around the country to remember all our valiant men and women Veterans, this year we are also recognizing those who fought in what has been termed “The Forgotten War”, the Korean War, which was fought from 1950 to 1953. It was a conflict that occurred way too soon after the Second World War. In 1950 North Korea poured all it had on South Korea. The newly formed United Nations protested, but to no avail. Eventually, this became a full-blown war with the members of the United Nations and South Korea on one side, and the Chinese and North Korea on the other, and our men were once again called upon. Canada made a larger contribution in proportion to her population than most of the nations which provided troops for the international force. It also marked a new stage in Canada’s development as a nation. Canadian action in Korea was followed by other peacekeeping operations which have seen Canadian troops deployed around the world in new efforts to promote international freedom and maintain world peace. There are 2,267 servicemen buried in the United Nations Memorial Cemetery, Pusan, Korea. Of these 1,588 were Commonwealth soldiers, including 378 Canadians. A total of 516 Canadians lost their lives.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM As we are remembering our Veterans, another faction of the forces must also be commemorated: The Native Soldiers. The First Nations People had people in the first and second World Wars and the Korean War. Yet, they were also forgotten. They have much to be proud of. More than 7,000 Natives served in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, and an unknown number of Inuit, Metis and other Natives also participated. One Native veterans group estimates that 12,000 Natives served in the three wars. Each time, Canada’s Native soldiers overcame cultural challenges and made impressive sacrifices and contributions to help Canada in its efforts to restore world peace. It was an incredible response consistent with a remarkable tradition. War should never be glorified. And, the sacrifices and achievements of those who participated must never be forgotten. We owe it to our veterans to keep the memory of their service alive.

THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD, AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD. AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN. AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN, AND IN THE MORNING,

– Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion

With over 340,000 members the Legion is one of Canada’s largest community based service organizations contributing millions of dollars and volunteer hours. They are responsible for the perpetuation of “REMEMBRANCE” in Canada through the Annual Poppy Campaign - reminding Canadians of the 117,000 men and women who gave their lives in the wars and military missions around the world. Poppy funds collected are used for assistance to veterans, ex-service members and their families who are in need. The Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion is the second oldest branch in Alberta and celebrated 85 years since receiving their charter on Oct. 8, 1926. Previous to 1926 the Legion was known as the Great War Veterans’ Association. On Remembrance Day, November 11, the Legion holds a memorial service to remember the nation’s losses. The ceremony starts at 10:30 A.M. at the Civic Centre and lasts until 12:30. There are guest speakers and the cadets and R.C.M.P. donate their time to the ceremony, placing the wreaths. What a sight to behold as all the veterans will be in uniform – my chest wells with pride just thinking of it. The moment of remembrance begins with the bugling of “Last Post” “immediately before 11:00 a.m. with two minutes of silence and ending with the playing of a lament, the bugling of “The Rouse” and the reading of the Act of Remembrance. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. RESPONSE: We will remember them Following the ceremony at the Civic Centre, all are welcome to attend the Field of Honour ceremony at the Strathmore Cemetery and finishing at the Legion. A truly fulfilling day will be had by all in attendance.

Veterans Ave

Downtown Strathmore

On Saturday, October 18th, 2008, the dedication of Veterans Avenue took place in Strathmore, Alberta. This was to celebrate Second Avenue receiving an honourary name of “Veterans Avenue”. This was on behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #10. There was an event that included a parade with The Calgary Firefighters Pipes and Drums, The Royal Canadian Legion Colour Party, Members, and Veterans. There was also a wreath laying at the Cenotaph, and the unveiling of the “Veterans Avenue” signs. This was a very worthwhile cause for the Legion, and the Town Of Strathmore. www.valuedrugmart.com

Who is the Legion? The Legion is a national organization committed to our Veterans, their families, and the communities they call home. Established in 1926, The Legion is the largest Veterans service organization in Canada with more than 300,000 members. Their mission is to serve veterans, which includes serving military and RCMP members and their families, to promote remembrance and to serve their communities and our country.

Each November, poppies blossom on the lapels and collars of over half of Canada’s entire population. Since 1921, the poppy has stood as a symbol of Remembrance, our visual pledge to never forget all those Canadians who have fallen in war and military operations. The poppy also stands internationally as a “symbol of collective reminiscence,” as other countries have also adopted its image to honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The millions of bright red poppies in exchange for contributions are to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. The program provides multiple benefits to the veterans and to the community. The hospitalized veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a small wage, which helps to supplement their incomes and makes them feel more self-sufficient. The physical and mental activity provides many therapeutic benefits as well. Donations are used exclusively to assist and support veterans and their families. The poppy also reminds the community of the past sacrifices and continuing needs of our veterans. The poppy has become a nationally known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn to honour the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars.

Let’s Revitalise Downtown Strathmore.

Strathmore has been my home for 9 years. I got married in Strathmore, bought my first house in Strathmore (and second house!), I’ve helped my dad start his own business in Strathmore (the Boulevard Café – remember that?!), I am raising my two beautiful kids in Strathmore, and I really have the best job ever in Strathmore. Some facts about Strathmore: Strathmore began as a hamlet for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) lines that were built in the area in 1883. CPR named the town after one of its benefactors: Claude Bowes-Lyon, the Earl of Strathmore. In 1905, the CPR moved the hamlet of Strathmore 6.4 km north to its current location, which is where we got our legacy, The Town That Moved. The first school opened in 1908. I have worked with The Newsy Neighbour for 5 years (can you believe it?!). In that time, I have met countless business owners, and I am so proud to say that I have become friends with many! Strathmore has some of the best businesses I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with! Something that has become quite apparent in recent years is that our current downtown is hurting. Just go on Facebook and see the many comments, threads and posts about our downtown, from complaints of empty buildings, lack of customers, the Co-Op moving, graffiti, “the clock”, etc. When The Newsy Neighbour decided to do a “Veteran’s Ave” page dedicated to businesses on Veteran’s Ave (2nd Ave) in the November, December and January issues,

Photocredits: MarlaBi from shutterstock.com

I spent more time walking up and down the street checking out the stores and businesses than I have in a long time and let me tell you – it was fun!!! Not only that, but it became apparent that downtown Strathmore is fantastic, the businesses are unique and diversified and there is SO much potential for it to be even more fantastic! The Newsy Neighbour is big on supporting local. Supporting local is vital to the growth of any town. Strathmore has a lot to offer and sometimes it’s easy to forget. I challenge you to check out somewhere you may not have seen in a while by taking a stroll down 2nd and 3rd Ave. Grab a coffee, dress warm, wear your comfortable walking shoes and have fun. We have so much to offer! And bear with us – downtown Strathmore is a work-in-progress. While we are known as the Town That Moved, we want to be known as The Town That Grew.

The Newsy Neighbour has taken on the challenge to help revitalise downtown Strathmore. Exciting things are happening downtown! Expect a big celebration sometime in 2015 hosted by The Newsy Neighbour that is open to all Strathmore businesses, a shopping challenge and huge giveaways!! We will release more info once we have things finalised! If you are a business owner in downtown Strathmore, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information on some amazing opportunities! She was an ambassador for the City of Calgary and was given the nickname of being “Calgary’s White Hatter To The Stars”. She “white hatted” over 25,000 guests to Calgary before she passed away on July 30, 2014 at the age of 79. Guests she greeted included stars such as Garth Brooks and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. As I stood at the funeral, or I should say Celebration of Life, listening to all the speeches, I was blown away by this woman. Below is a section that I took from Kristine’s speech to her grandma: “I came across a couple newspaper articles that my grandma had kept about herself last year when I was at my grandparents’ house and told my grandpa that someone should scan them in case something happened, like a fire or a flood. It would be a shame to lose all these old articles. Later on that week, he showed up at the office with a suitcase that was seriously JAM PACKED with stuff. I asked him what was in the suitcase and he told me, “Newspaper articles about your grandma”. As if. When I saw the newspaper articles at his house, there were about 10. I unlocked the latches in the front and it literally popped open, with stuff flying out the sides of it. As I read over her articles, I felt exhausted… I can’t believe everything she did! SHE must have been exhausted! Wrong! She was just a ball of energy. She loved what she did, no matter how much time it consumed. She always had a huge smile on her face and was always so incredibly happy and bubbly. In that binder contained:

n July of this year, one of my very best friends, Kristine, lost her Grandma, Marge Gundmundson. I was with her through all of it. For the family, it was both heartbreaking and peaceful. Kristine’s Grandmother Marge wasn’t just anyone; she was incredibly inspiring and probably one of the hardest working, motivated people I have ever heard about. Now, I only met Marge once when I visited their family cabin for a weekend in the summer years ago, but I have heard so many stories about her, I have seen all the pictures, awards, certificates, newspaper clippings and so on.

This woman was incredible and has actually made me ask myself, “What am I doing with my life?” I am very happy with my life and what I have accomplished; I have a wonderful husband and an incredible little boy whom I love more than words could explain. I am a successful magazine owner and feel like for being 32 (in just a few months) I am where I should be in my life. Marge STILL makes me ask myself that question. My older sister Carla and I would spend a week or 2 during the summer over at my grandparents house and, I swear, she was baking cookies every night for someone different… sometimes even in the mornings! These cookies were loved by everyone, even the then-premier Ralph Klein. She spent her whole life trying to bring people together. My grandma lived her life to the fullest and took advantage of every minute of every day. There was never a minute wasted. many ways and she meant more to me than I could possible put into words.” I wanted to attempt to write an article about her (even though I am NOT the writer in this group) because she inspired me to work harder and do better at everything I do. I feel like every time Kristine and I talk about her she tells me another amazing story. For example, she raised $100,000 to erect the 10-meter-tall moose that now graces the approach to the city of Moose Jaw! Or how she cooked supper for the entire Stampeders team on more than one occasion. She would cook 2 or 3 turkeys at a time to feed everyone. These are just 2 more amazing things on top of all the others mentioned above.

I put more purpose into whatever I am doing now, and I try not to say “I’m too tired” or “I’ll do it tomorrow”. I am trying not to procrastinate, because Marge didn’t – and she did so much. She truly led an incredible life. Life is so short and it is hard to find someone that really did all they wanted to do before they died. I truly feel like Marge did! Aleesha Gosling

The friend was so pleased with the letter that he left a large tip after lunch. The waitress, surprised by the tip, bet the whole thing on a hunch. The next day she gave her winnings to a homeless man. The man was very grateful for he had not eaten in 2 days. Oh the way home he picked up a shivering stray puppy and dropped him off on the doorstep of a warm home. Did You Know? Herring Communicate by Farting!? Scientists in the UK and Canada worked together to make a fartling - I mean startling - discovery. It turns out that herring use their farts to communicate. The tiny fish release a 22 khz sound, followed by a stream of air bubbles, from their anus. This sound and the ensuing signal are not released due to fear or diet, but they can be detected by other herring. They tend to fart in darkness when there are other herring nearby, reinforcing the idea www.oddee.com that they’re sending messages.

Handling a New Reality As things unfolded on the morning of October 22, 2014, I could no longer submit the column that I had planned. The events in Ottawa were unprecedented in our country.

A

lthough attacks here are rare, how they were handled was uniquely Canadian. The country and its media focused on the fallen, injured and on its heroes. This stands in stark contrast to tweets and headlines from elsewhere. Canadians remained steadfast in who they are and chose not to succumb to fear or sensationalism allowing the acts of a few to rattle them. Public addresses by the leaders of our national political parties focused on the strength of Canadians helping and standing by other Canadians. The standing ovation for Sgt-at-Arms Kevin Vickers as he entered the House on Thursday, October 23 was another wonderful display of Canadian values and behaviour. Ric Morales, Coordinator Diversity Services, CCIS told me, “These events shouldn’t serve as a catalyst for hatred rather as a catalyst for understanding.” I was fortunate to participate in a workshop where he shared ways of beginning the conversations that help build cultural competency. The privilege of travelling outside of North America changed my world perspective. I discovered values and behaviours that enhanced my abilities and appreciation for the Canadian way of life as it changes and evolves. Any length of time on this earth has shown us that “nothing remains the same.” Our ability to adapt to change increases the amount of joy and freedom we experience.

to conclusions and creating policies or beliefs based on what could be information viewed outside of its context. How much more power over our lives do we want to relinquish to government? John C. Maxwell wrote Everyone Communicates, Few Connect: What the Most Effective People Do Differently. It is about breaking the invisible barrier that stops individuals from making those important connections. As I’ve stated before, I believe that communication and connection are necessary to build a strong, free Canada that is glorious and free.

Do we all agree with some of the changes that are being proposed by the Canadian government and the impact they will impose on personal freedoms within our land? I don’t know. I do believe that we need to look at the facts of what has occurred in the last few days on an individual basis. We must avoid jumping

Dear Lifelines; Last month you mentioned boundaries. Can you explain that a bit more? I don’t know why you would want boundaries with your relatives. I don’t think there should be any limits on what you do for family. Please explain why you say boundaries are needed. Thanks in advance, Limitless with Family

hours at work, sewing for people, dating, raising your kids, volunteering, carpooling, lending books and tools -- the list goes on and on for areas that we might need to recognize our limits when interacting with others. Oftentimes when we feel slightly resentful or angered it might be an indication of breached boundaries and we might want to sit with our feelings and analyze what exactly is the cause of our discomfort so that we can act on that. So when someone asks you to do that extra shopping run for them during the holidays for the fifth time, or a date asks for that kiss that you’d really rather not share with them, recognize your self-worth and respond in a way that truly honours your personal limits. Good luck and let us know your thoughts and feedback. Lifelines.

“You find peace not by rearranging the circumstances of your life, but by realizing who you are at the deepest level.” Eckhart Tolle

A baby is an angel whose wings decrease as his legs increase. ~Author Unknown

Dear Limitless: Similar to the protection offered by physical boundaries like a fence, property line or driving lanes, relationship boundaries help to keep people around us within certain limits so that our feelings and sense of our own self-worth might be protected. When we don’t establish boundaries, we fail to acknowledge our own needs, setting our self-worth aside and allowing others’ needs to take a more dominant position. This avoidance of setting limits might put us at greater risk for being hurt emotionally. This hurt might eventually surface as us being resentful, angry, passive-aggressive or withholding because others have gone past our point of comfort and now we are feeling the consequences. But to set boundaries for ourselves need not be an angry or hostile process. Boundaries are more about understanding ourselves and realizing at what point we start to feel uncomfortable. For instance, you may feel that lending money to relatives is fine, but at what point does it stop being fine? When do you start to feel that you or others in your family are suffering because of your kindness? The key is to pay attention to your emotions and let that dictate your boundaries. If you are ok lending $500 but they are asking for $5000 – will you still lend it? Or will you acknowledge your limit and honour your limit? It’s important to think about these possible scenarios that come up in life before you agree to do something that you are not comfortable with. And it’s not only money that deserves consideration, but your time, your generosity, and virtually any aspect of your life that you spend in supporting others. One example that springs to mind is from my early childhood. My grandma would offer my sister and me a snack every afternoon between our busy playtimes – usually Fudgsicles or Revels, quite the treat 40 years ago. As the neighbourhood kids grew to know this, Grandma ended up handing out several snacks to all the kids in the area – some kids we hardly even knew. She eventually had to set limits and gently encourage the kids to solicit their own parents for snacks. Babysitting for relatives and friends, hosting dinners, doing extra

Christmas Part One

Luscious Joys Now, don’t panic when I tell you that Christmas is 54 days away as of November 1st.

I

know! I could not believe it either! Every year I make a big gift box full of cookies, loaves, pickling and other assorted goodies for my children and they love it; much better than that perfect gift that a mother buys her children and they just moan. Well, they have never moaned at their special food box. The thing is, I have six boxes to make and that just cannot be done in a day or even a week so I start early (like November) and freeze the goodies until the morning of Christmas. It works perfectly! The other alternative is “Ice Box Cookies” because you can make them and freeze the dough until you’re ready to bake and they always turn out scrumptious. Here are four of my favourite Ice Box Cookies. I especially love the Pecan Shortbread; they are to die for!! Enjoy!

1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt Cream brown sugar and butter, add slightly beaten egg, almond extract and beat well. Sift flour, baking soda and salt together, add to batter and mix well. Cut mixed glace cherries in quarters, chop almonds. Also take a little flour from sifter and sprinkle on cherries and almonds; add to mixture. Form into a roll. Wrap in wax paper and chill until hard. When hard, slice thinly with a sharp knife and bake at 350°F until golden brown. Makes about 6 dozen cookies. This dough may be frozen and baked later. Beat in eggs and vanilla. In another bowl, 1/2 cup red & green glace cherries stir together flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually stir flour 1/2 cup blanched almonds mixture into shortening mixture. Stir 1/2 tsp almond extract in oatmeal, nuts and coconut. Divide dough in half. Shape in rolls, wrap in wax paper and chill overnight. Preheat oven to 375°F. Slice 1/4 inch thick and place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden. OPEN HOUSE Merry Fitmas!

Stay Healthy & Happy During the Holidays

The 8 Top Ways By Cynthia Barnesky

1. Get Enough Rest!

Start off by avoiding TV or any other electronics for the last half hour before bed. Adults need 7-8 hours of deep sleep. Sleep is a necessity, not a treat! The benefits outweigh the need, from boosting your immune systems to repairing areas of your body that are injured to releasing, rebuilding and renewing mind, body and soul for the next day. If you happen to get the flu/ cold, try not to work through it. Listening to your body and taking a few days of rest can result in a quicker recovery rather than a couple of weeks.

2. Load Up On Vitamin D3 and Vitamin C!

As the days get shorter, so does the sunlight resulting in the lack of vitamin D, which reduces our immune function. In our area of Canada, we need anywhere from 4,000 – 6,000 IU/ day. This will help avoid deficiency and also make your immune system stronger and vibrant. Vitamin C is like a sister vitamin to vitamin D. It also can help with protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling. It is recommended taking 500 milligrams a day, in addition to eating five servings of fruits and vegetables for the right amount of vitamin C.

3. Wash Your Hands!

Many colds/flus are viral, not bacterial; so plain soup and water will do the trick in fighting off the virus. It is not necessary to use anti-bacterial products. Hand washing is a preventative measure and there are 3 crucial components to good hand washing: warm water, natural and non-antibacterial soap and friction. First, wet both hands with warm water, lather well with soap by rubbing both hands together (covering all surfaces and

in between the fingers) while singing the alphabet. Next, rinse thoroughly and dry well. This helps to decrease the likelihood of spreading the virus to your nose, month or other people.

4. Do Not Forget Monthly Health Maintenance!

Having regular massages, chiropractor adjustment, reflexology treatments, acupuncture treatments, or any other types of traditional or alternative treatments will greatly help your mind, body and soul unwind and handle any kind of stress you throw at it. When you treat your body well, it will treat you well!

5. Turn That Frown Upside Down!

Family stress is one of the biggest stressors of the holidays. From family relationships, to mother-in-laws, and to civil-rivalry, often our predetermined notion of a holiday family gathering does not measure up to reality, thus resulting in anger, frustration and the blame game. Put your feelings aside for now and just enjoy each other’s company; come to the party without any expectations and keep an open mind and put the past in the past! If one is feeling overwhelmed, just step outside or into another room until you calm down. I find singing Christmas carols helps a lot to calm me down!

6. Keep Moving!

As we over indulging at parties and holiday meals, making excuses for not going to the gym gets easier to do. The body NEEDS to keep moving in order for all of your body systems to work regularly. Try taking the stairs more or taking the family out stating, skiing, tobogganing, snow shoeing or even having a snow ball fight! I like to take family to the biggest mall and just window shop. Whatever you decide to do, just keep moving your bodies!

7. Indulge, But Be Smart About It!

I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dickens

We are all guilty of over eating or drinking way too much at holiday parties (or, most of us have). Here are some smarter ways to avoid the bloating and hangover affects: 1) Start by going to the party not hungry. This helps one not to binge eat. Choose healthier nutrient-dense foods like proteins (chicken, turkey, fish) and salads. Breads, rice and pasta just leaves you bloated! Desserts are always calling your name, so go and have some but just have a smaller piece and you will feel satisfied and your cravings fulfilled. Most of us will have a drink or two or even more; before you start, have a big glass full of water and after every two drinks have another full glass of water. This will lessen the impact of the alcohol on your system. “Cheers”!

8. Share, Smile, Laugh and Love!

Helping others is a sure way of making yourself and others feel good and that is what Christmas is all about! Good karma will always come back ten-fold when you hold no expectations in return. Try smiling when you talk to other – you can brighten up someone’s day without even knowing it! A smile is like giving that person a rose; it warms their hearts and souls. “Laughter is the best medicine”, as the saying goes. So try to find a way to laugh each and every day. Make time to share, smile, and laugh and love one another! Love heals all wounds!

Amalia is a stay at home Mom who has recently started dabbling in the social work world again. She was raised with the knowledge and benefits of natural alternatives and her passion in this area continues to grow as she strives to provide her own family with the same values. o I am a procrastinator. A huge procrastinator. I am the type of person that pushed out a 20-page paper in college the night before and submitted it at 11:59pm when the deadline was 12:00am. I do my best housecleaning 15 minutes before company comes over, I get my winter tires put on when everyone else does (the day of the first big snow), and I make my Halloween costume the day of Halloween (I must admit, this one has never proven to be a good theory for me). As you might guess, this also means that I am the person scrambling to buy my Christmas gifts on December 23. Being proactive has just never worked for me; one year I thought I would be smart and purchased some gifts in October or November that were on sale. They were put on a box, in the corner and found only a mere 3 months after Christmas. I completely forgot about them!! Well this year, (as every year), will going to be different; but really this year, I swear it will be. By the time you are reading this, I will have a toddler and a newborn and the thought of

dragging a toddler and a newborn to the malls days before Christmas sounds like pure torture, which is a step up from procrastination! Along with trying to be a proactive present buyer, I have also always thought I would make my own handmade, personalized Christmas gifts. Once again, this has actually never happened. But THIS year I swear it will, and here is why:

I have my essential oils and I have found some recipes that seem easy enough that even I can do (and that is saying a lot, trust me). So, without further ado, I present to you my first ever, proactive, homemade Christmas gift journal!

DIY Peppermint Sugar Scrub INGREDIENTS and SUPPLIES 2 1/2 cup sugar (white or brown) 1 cup of unscented oil (organic is a bonus) such as almond or grapeseed oil 25-30 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil A small glass container with a tight fitting lid (can use a small mason jar or the dollar store has good options) Directions: In a big bowl, mix your sugar and oil together with a fork until the sugar becomes the consistency of good sand castle building. If it is too dry, add a few more tablespoons, until you The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

can pinch it between your fingers and it is mold-able. Once you have reached this consistency you can add your oil. Peppermint is yummy and delicious but other options work well too; I might try lemon, thieves, orange, grapefruit or lavender. My only precaution is that you use 100% pure, therapeutic, medicinal grade oils. Any oil that is cut with any synthetics can cause reactions on the skin. Once you have your mixture, you can start packing it into your little half pint mason jars. Fill it until it is overflowing then pack it all down, taking care to stuff it into the corner and sides. Once it is all in, drizzle a bit more oil on top to keep the top from drying up. That’s it!! Put the lid on, tie a ribbon on it and ta-da! If you wanted to get really crazy, you could tie a candy cane to the top to show that it was peppermint!

Homemade Heating Pad for Headaches and Cramps INGREDIENTS and SUPPLIES For headaches: 1 cotton dish towel 4-5 cups of rice 5 drops of Lavender 5 drops of Peppermint For cramps: 1 cotton dish towel 4-5 cups of rice 5 drops of Lavender 5 drops of Clary Sage 5 drops of Marjoram Directions: Pour the rice into a large ziploc bag along with the essential oils. Seal and roll around until well mixed. Put aside and let soak while you make your bag. Cut your dish towel in half and put pieces together inside out. Sew around all edges but leave a 3-4 inch opening for filling. Turn your bag inside out and cut a hole in the corner of your rice bag to dump your rice mixture into the bag. Sew the last little bit once all your rice is in. How to use: Headache pillow: find a dark, quiet place and place pillow on or under your head. Relax, take deep breaths to inhale the relaxing and calming Lavender and the invigorating peppermint. For menstrual cramps: warm the pillow up for 15-30 seconds in the microwave and lay it across your pelvic area. Relax and inhale deeply. The Clary Sage helps ease the muscle tension, the Lavender calms and supports normal hormone level and the Marjoram helps with fluid retention and muscle spasms.

Kids Scented Play Dough INGREDIENTS: 1 cup of flour 1/2 cup of salt 2 tbsp of cream of tartar 1 tbsp of olive oil 1 cup of water Food colouring 6-10 drops of essential oil Directions: Mix first four ingredients. Add water and cook over medium heat until dough clumps together. Remove from pan and knead until nice and elastic (add more flour if it is too sticky).

We Are Not Endangered

King PENGUINS

Penguins are awesome. Have you been to the penguin exhibit at the Calgary Zoo? If you haven’t, you have to go check it out. They have four different species of penguins there. Gentoo Penguins, Humboldt Penguins, King Penguins (like the ones in the pictures on this page) and Rockhopper Penguins. King Penguins call home to the Sub-Antarctic islands and the Falkland Islands (South America). They are the second-largest penguin species and similar in appearance to Emperor Penguin. The adult king penguin will grow to nearly a metre in height. On average, the king penguin breeds once a year, forming pairs that usually remain faithful to one another. The female king penguin lays two eggs which are incubated by both parents for about two months, when only one of the eggs will usually hatch. The king penguin chicks are fed and kept warm by their parents and remain with them until the chicks are about a year old. No other bird has a longer breeding cycle than King Penguins. They take 14 to 16 months to fledge a single chick.

Did you know?

Just before hatching, penguin chicks call to their parents from inside the egg. King penguins have adapted well to the extreme living conditions of the Antarctic and, to keep warm, the king penguin has four layers of feathering. King Penguins have 70 feathers per every square inch. The outer layer of feathers are oiled and waterproof, and the inner three layers are down feathers, which act as very effective insulation as the bitter cold. The king penguin is a carnivorous animal, that like all other penguin species, survives on a diet that is only comprised of marine animals. Krill and small crustaceans make up the bulk of the king penguin's diet along with larger organisms including squid and various species of fish. Today, the king penguin populations in the sub-Antarctic Oceans appear to be thriving and, better still, increasing in numbers with more than two million breeding pairs of king penguins found around the freezing waters. There is no denying the overall beauty of this particular penguin. Their tall and slender build gives them a type of posture and movement that you usually don’t see with other penguins. 32 •

FAMILY PAGE Here is a question for you: have you ever been with a person for lunch, visiting, chatting, driving or just in the same room trying to visit but they cannot stay off their phone? When did this all happen? Texting has become an epidemic. Think about it; they are making laws about texting in your vehicle because people are dying because of it!

This article is not about texting; it is about listening - do you really listen when people talk to you or do you just wait for them to finish so you can give them a response, or are you texting?

A

re you listening or just hearing? Listening involves the whole person - mind, heart, and soul. Attentiveness, interest, and concern need to shine through. Listen with your whole self. Forget yourself for a short while and show an interest. There’s so much to learn from people. Everybody has a story. I’m just as guilty as the rest of you, the problem is our minds are always going a million miles an hour thinking about, yes, a million different things, deadlines, appointments, cleaning the house, shopping, painting, the neighbours, our families, phone calls, something you said, something you didn’t say, regrets, promises and other things! When did this all happen, or has it always been happening? Well, I don’t know about all that, but I have just got to say it seems to me it happened with the introduction of cellular phone (texting) and computers. Just my opinion don’t get all upset, but seriously wasn’t life simpler before all this technology. When was the last time you received a hand written letter in the mail? Remember

34 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

those days? My generation would remember that, but what about our children? I wish now I would have saved all those hand written letters I received, as they are such a treasure. I’m getting off track here I wanted to write about listening – really listening. The art of listening, especially to our children. On a list of 1 to 10, 10 would be the most irritating thing your children can do when you are trying to have a conversation and their cell phone seems to be way more important than making eye contact with you. Do I sound like I’m ranting yet? Truthfully, when I think about all the money I spend on my own cell bill, if I wasn’t signed into a two year contract I think I would cancel. Actually, I think I will in two years. My cell phone has become a responsibility I’m getting tired of. If you have something really important to tell me, call me on my landline and leave me a message just like the good old days. Alright, back to listening. I found some tips on tinybuddha.com about this topic and there were some seriously good tips. Reflect back on what the other says. Comment on it; it makes them feel heard. All too often we bring it back to ourselves. Let people feel that it’s all about them for that moment. Be present and stay focused. Stay with the other person’s talk. It’s obvious when the listener is simply thinking about his next comment. Ask The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Altogether Different

questions - meaningful ones. It shows you really want to understand the other person, not just participate at the bare minimum. Acknowledge feelings. I know this can sound like touchy feely stuff, but it’s the crux of good communication. It’s worth repeating again: when people feel understood, they’re less likely to get defensive and argumentative. As human beings, our visceral need is to feel held, with words, rather than to receive solutions. When we get the space and understanding we need, we can usually come to our own answers. And if not, there’s always time to brainstorm for possible solutions. In the simple act of listening, you can reveal much to someone else. What if we all just listened more? And these tips from familyeducation.com: Tips on Listening to Your Child: Listening carefully is how you gather information about what's going on in your child's life and head. Listening effectively builds strong relationships. Listening thoughtfully shows respect. Listening is always the first step in solving problems. Listening to your child's perspective will teach you a lot. Kids are smarter than most grown-ups think, and they generally know what they need. Listen to your kids, and they will teach you how to raise them. If you want your child to listen to you, you'll need to first listen to her. A child who is listened to learns how to listen. And until she learns how to listen to you, it's the same as telling your problems to the bathroom mirror - no matter how eloquently you express yourself, nobody will be hearing you but you. And this from onetoughjob.org: Nothing is more important in your relationship with your child than effective, open communication. To be able to talk to your child, listen to your child, and have your child know that you are there for her is really the most important aspect of parenting. By communicating effectively with your child, you will alleviate much of the stress that comes with being a parent. A big part of being a strong communicator is being a good listener. When your child knows that you will listen to her when she talks, she will be more likely to listen to what you have to say. Respond to nonverbal communication. This will encourage your child to express his emotions verbally. For example, if your child rolls her eyes, you might say, "The way you are rolling your eyes suggests you don't agree. Am I right?" Find a time and place to talk. When your child approaches you to talk but you cannot right at that moment, let your child know "now is

not the right time, but it's important that we talk". Set a time and place to talk later, when you can give your child the full attention she deserves. Set the time and place then, and then make sure you follow through. Give your child your full attention. When you sit down to talk, make sure there are not any interruptions and give your child your full attention. Don't answer the phone, check your cell phone, or be watching the game or anything on TV. Avoid interrupting. Letting your child finish what he wants to say shows that you care about what he has to say. Give nonverbal encouragement. Lean forward and make eye contact, nod occasionally, say "uh-huh" or "mmm", and smile when appropriate to let your child know that you are interested in what she is saying. You know your children are only small once, teenagers once and young adults once; don’t make the mistake of not doing the right thing when you have the chance. As a parent, you will always have regrets; the age-old “I should have done, I should have said, I should have chosen differently”. Being a parent is the best and scariest job in the universe, and you have got to do the best job you can by remembering to LISTEN to your children and take the time and make them feel as important as they are, because they are important, special and absolutely amazing! Kathryn Hartwell

Are you listening or just hearing? Listening involves the whole person mind, heart, and soul.

Grey Cup or Bust!

Jocktalk

Photocredits: Dennis Ku from shutterstock.com

Not a chance, in my humble opinion! The Stampeders may not be a perfect team but they are clearly the class the league. Here are five reasons why the Stampeders will win the West and win it all in Vancouver on Sunday, November 30th in the 102nd Grey Cup.

“If you would have told me at the start of the season that we would win the west with three games left in the regular season, I would have told you you’re c razy! What have you been drinking?”

1) Jon Cornish

That quote was from Stampeder head coach and general manager John Hufnagel after it was confirmed the Stamps would host the West Final for the second consecutive year and the 4th time in the Hufnagel era. While the Stamps beat the Lions in 2008 and went on to win the Grey Cup against Montreal, it was a much different story in 2010. With the opportunity to play at home in the 98th Grey Cup, the Stamps blew an 11 - 0 first quarter lead against Darian Durant and the Riders and ended up losing by 4. For Stampeder fans, it was a crushing and heart breaking experience to watch Saskatchewan move into the home dressing room at McMahon Stadium. More bad memories last year as it was one and done for the 14 - 4 Stampeders. Inexplicitly, a team that was so responsible with ball control during the regular season, turned it over 8 times and handed the Riders a gift 35 - 13 victory. So what’s the big question on everybody’s mind heading into the Western Final on November 23rd? Is this team once again setting up the fans for a big time disappointment?

36 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

As a run first offense the Stampeders are blessed to have the Most Outstanding Player in the CFL. The injuries that Cornish suffered this year will be a blessing in disguise as his body has had time to rest and recover. Cornish will be named the top Canadian in the Grey Cup.

Is this team once again setting up the fans for a big time disappointment? Not a chance, in my humble opinion!

2) Bo Levi Mitchell No disrespect to Henry Burris or Kevin Glenn, but they were the last two starting quarterbacks for the Stamps in the Western Final. Burris was past his prime and Glenn had the reputation for not being able to win the big game. As a first year starting quarterback, Mitchell has established himself as a savvy game manager with a big arm. Mitchell will be named the Grey Cup MVP.

3) Nik Lewis There are no guarantees the 32 year old future hall of fame will be around next season for his 13th season, but I do believe in Karma. Although he no longer has the sexy receiving numbers,

Lewis has become a respected leader in the dressing room. Like Hufnagel, Lewis will not let his teammates get complacent.

4) Rich Stubler The Riders may have John Chick and the Eskimos may have Odell Willis and Dexter McCoil, but neither of those teams can match up defensively with the Calgary Stampeders. The 65 year old defensive coordinator has brought over 45 years of coaching experience to the organization. The Stamps were the best team in the league this season because of their defense and trend will continue in November. If you don’t believe it, just ask Juwan Simpson, Keon Raymond or Charleston Hughes.

5) It won’t be the Riders! Sorry Rider Nation, your team just isn’t good enough. Even if Durant makes a miraculous comeback, there will be a new champion crowned this season in the CFL.

The 2014 Grey Cup goes through Alberta this year. The Edmonton Eskimos will provide a tough challenge in the West Final at McMahon and while it’s tough to beat a team four straight times in one season, the Stamps are simply a better team. Oh yes, it’s also “The Year of the Horse!” About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. Unique Deadly Animals in the World Cone Snail The Cone Snail is one of those animals that no one thinks about, but it is as deadly as it gets. Usually, one may not even realize they are handling a Cone Snail because the first thing you see is their beautiful shell. The snail underneath is an afterthought, but a deadly one.

EXERCISE EX-ER-CISE EX-AR-SIZE EGGS-ARE-SIDES FOR BACON BACON YES!!! BACON!

Shell collectors end up picking one up and the snail’s harpoon will stick into the person. What happens next depends on the Cone Snail. Each one has a different poison. The deadly ones have a Neurotoxin that will temporarily paralyze you. Then your body will start to shut down. You will also develop severe respiratory problems. This could be the worst part of it. The Cone Snail has something called a Conotoxin. There is no cure for what the Cone Snail puts in your system. Sometimes full blood transfusions are necessary to get rid of the poison. The way to survive the attack initially, before help arrives, is to make sure you alert someone as quickly as possible by calling 911. You should also make sure that CPR is performed. If CPR is administered, chances are there will be enough time to save the person’s life. If not, they risk dying. Cone Snails are typically found in warm and tropical seas and oceans worldwide, and reaches its greatest diversity in the Western Indo-Pacific Region. However, some species of Conus are adapted to temperate environments, such as the Cape coast of South Africa, the Mediterranean, or the cool waters of southern California and are endemic to these areas. This genus is found in all tropical and subtropical seas from tidal waters to deeper areas, living on sand or among rocks or coral reefs. When living on sand, these snails will bury themselves with only the siphon protruding from the surface. Many tropical cone snails live in or near coral reefs. Some species are found under rocks in the lower intertidal and shallow subtidal zones.

T he other day I had an epiphany. It had been too long – many days, maybe even weeks – since I had really tuned into my body.

Registration fee includes keynote speaker, gift bag with book She Said, workshops, resource fair, doorprizes, breakfast, lunch and closing reception.

I had been teaching classes, promoting the good yoga word to everyone from preschoolers to hockey teams to my regular students who honour me by showing up to my classes each week. Even though I had been ‘doing yoga’, in terms of technically I was moving my body around into yoga poses at least once a day, if not more, I really hadn’t quieted my mind enough to experience what my body was experiencing. In my head, I had never stopped thinking – planning classes, promoting the studio, organizing my home and family, worrying about this and that, and then full circle back to planning classes... in the meantime, I had fed and watered my body, put it to sleep, washed it, and moved it around from place to place – without ever giving it my undivided attention.

Have you ever noticed how much we live inside our heads?

The Newsy Neighbour is a Proud Media Sponsor of “Shared Wisdom”

When is the last time you felt truly connected to the experience of life that you are having through the medium of your body? Even while we move through life, so much of our experience is in our heads. I believe that this experience is so prevalent it is a societal norm. It’s as if this living, breathing organism that we feed, wash and sleep is nothing but a mechanism for moving our thinking mind from place to place.

A friend of mine went to a meet & greet arranged by an online dating company. She was ‘pre-matched’ with her most probable partner. On being asked what it was like, she replied, “It’s a frightening experience, finding out what the computer thinks your type is.”

When is the last time you were mindful in your body? Why is it necessary for us to tune into the life experience that our body is having?

A very attractive female student was being admired by two bio-chemistry students at a university food court. The one remarked to the other, “Relax – she’s at least three quarters water”. To which the other replied, “Yes, but what surface tension.”

The term ‘yoga’ actually does not refer to the physical movement trend that is moving so rapidly throughout North America. What the word means is ‘union; or yoke’. When one experiences ‘yoga’, it is the connection and joyful union of body, mind and spirit.

An open current of communication between body and mind giving us the opportunity to heal imbalances, and the tools to observe and correct unease in our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. This unease, when ignored, has the potential to become dis-ease, which is often, though not solely, displayed in the physical body as pain or illness. Even those in top physical condition have the potential to being ignorant of the messages the body is trying to communicate. And even those who are most physically limited will benefit in many ways improving their communication with their physical body. There is a great richness in the experience the body has. Since realizing my disconnect, in the brief moments that I have found in my days to tune into my body, the colours and textures of life seem more vibrant and alive. While I don’t know how to fix it yet, I am now aware and mindful of the pain I am experiencing in my feet. My stress level has lowered, my breathing has slowed, I can notice and consciously release the tension in my shoulders, I can observe my desire to eat that chocolate as the mental Band-Aid that it is – then I eat the chocolate anyways because I choose to eat it mindfully and with joy – maybe it does have the potential to do some good when I consume it that way...

Our body is experiencing our life, whether we pay attention to it or not. When we live inside our heads too much, we miss out on much of the potential for healing ourselves through awareness. We miss out on the joy of the sensual pleasures that the physical world offers. Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh says in his book Peace of Mind, “We reconnect with our body every time we remember our body is there. When body and mind are together, we are truly present in the here and the now and we can live every moment of daily life deeply.” For those of you whom yoga is not of interest, these thoughts transcend the barriers of interest – whether it is through a hatha yoga practice, running, walking in nature, the rapture of a beloved sport, martial arts, dance or something as simple and accessible as tuning into your breath – there are many ways that we can drop out of heads and back into our own body. It’s not a simple thing to do, especially if you are just learning that you do live a lot in your head. It’s not simple, but it’s not hard either! Simply by becoming mindful of our body, we start the process. And it is so worth it. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, “If we know how to be in touch with our body and connect with our body, we will connect with Mother Earth and the whole cosmos.” I wanted to offer you a tangible tool to use to help you in this process of dropping out of your head and into your body. Layers Of Stress Have you ever fallen off your bike, sprained a joint or slouched in your chair? Do you eat sugary treats or drink pop, use bleach or other chemicals to clean your house or frequently breathe in cigarette smoke (even second hand), air fresheners, or perfume? Are you ever worried about finances? Do you get frustrated with traffic or have deadlines to meet at work? All of these items above are examples of stress in our society. Taken just one at a time they aren’t a big deal, but as they accumulate they become a huge problem. These layers of stress are extremely traumatic and can lead to abnormal function of your nervous system, therefore affecting any part of your body (since your nervous system controls everything). Being conscious of what you put into your body is a great place to start to reduce the layers of stress. Try eating more fresh vegetables, using more natural products for cleaning and grooming, or start to use an air purifier in your home. Small steps can make a big difference as time goes on. For the stress in your life that you can’t control, you need help to reduce the impact on your health. When your nervous system is irritated by accumulating stressors, a Doctor of Chiropractor is essential! Chiropractic adjustments restore normal nervous system function and can therefore help your body heal. No other profession deals with restoring normal nervous system function. If you have never seen a chiropractor before, don’t be scared. Most chiropractors will sit down for a free 10 minute consult to answer any questions you may have. No thing is missing. There is a new ‘me in we’ that was brought out. They have enhanced their life with new life. We stop and realize that we need to stop more. Emotion is energy in motion. Embrace your emotions – they are full of beautiful energy. Start practicing both energies; being and doing. This will shift human consciousness. This will shift you.

Slow, deep breathing reduces muscle tension and helps you calm down. Breathing helps your body. Taking in deep breaths from the diaphragm can slow heart rate, lower blood pressure, relax muscles and help asthma and fibromyalgia sufferers. Deep breathing also triggers the release of endorphins and improves the function of lymphatic system which carries toxins away from cells. Just half an hour of brisk walking everyday can help prevent or control obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. If you work 11 hours or more a day, you’re 60% more likely to develop heart-related problems than if you work 8 hours. So go to your boss after 8 hours and say, “I need to go home… for my health! Energy Medicine The other day, I was waving my hands to brush and clear the air around my face, neck and shoulders and my friend asked, “What are you doing?”

Stress

Sangster’s has all-natural solutions to ease stress, like Sangster’s Balancer: reduces stress & fatigue, & helps you sleep

We had been talking about some ‘issues’ in our lives and I explained that I had been taught to clear the space around me, called the biofield, which tends to collect debris or ‘stuff’ that should be let go of. I learned about clearing the space when I went to get a treatment of Energy Medicine. If you clear the back, behind you, it is stuff from your past. Ask a friend or loved one to “clear your back” by brushing the air behind you from your waist to your knees with both hands. I also learned about chakras, which are the energy centres throughout our body and how to connect them as a way of caring for yourself. Chakra massage is extremely relaxing with warm towels, the aroma of essential oils, soft touch and specific interventions. It’s not so much about curing an ailment as it is about our healing journey. It teaches you to notice your body and your emotions better. I find I don’t stress out about small things anymore. I let go of some of my fears and trust things will go well.

Headaches – Are your Teeth to Blame?

Are you Ready??

Has that nagging headache got you visiting doctors only to be told that everything is fine? Have you tolerated numerous headache medications only to still suffer from daily discomfort? Maybe it’s time to consider that your headaches have nothing to do with your heavy work schedule or indulgence of red wine, but are triggered by an imbalance in your dental bite.

Ready for your sunny vacation ... Get your base tan before you go to help prevent sunburn! Start early for best results!

The intricate network of nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments that surround the jaw joint and travel around the skull and lower jaw are often over taxed due to skeletal abnormalities and bite issues. Often the most dominant and consistent symptom of bite dysfunction is recurring headaches that don’t respond to over-the-counter medication - leaving a patient feeling physically exhausted and emotionally drained. Living with chronic pain is a real burden – and persistent headaches caused by a bad dental bite can soon suck the fun out of life.

Ready to finish your shopping list ... Studio 86 gift certificates are a perfect fit every time!

Teeth that don’t line-up properly with either their adjacent (side) or opposing teeth are inevitably out of alignment. Orthodontic treatment is commonly used during teenage years to correct alignment concerns – moving teeth to create a preferred arch form and ensuring that top teeth meet and interdigitate optimally with lower teeth. But for many individuals, orthodontic treatment was not an option during younger years, so living with an imbalanced bite became the norm until the repetitive effects of muscle tension and nerve sensitivity forces patients to seek dental treatment as a solution. Clenching and grinding of teeth can be a huge trigger for cluster and migraine headaches. The force that is exerted during a bout of clenching causes facial muscles to tighten, creating pressure and pain around the temples, top and back of head. Interestingly, the act of clenching and grinding is often the bodies way of trying to create balance to a bad bite – as the brain detects minute discrepancies and high spots and tries to fix them by grinding away at interferences. For example, if you are missing teeth on one side of your mouth, or lack the essential guidance at the front of the mouth due to worn and shortened teeth, an imbalance is created and results in muscle tension, nerve sensitivity and, of course, headaches.

Ideal Nutrition

Experience the Freedom of the Ideal Protein Protocol

Strathmore - Langdon - Calgary

403-934-6065 236 - 3 Avenue Strathmore, AB

Weight management for the reduction of Illness Q & A with Estelle Pedersen, Registered Nurse that offers the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Program in Strathmore, Langdon and Calgary. Commonly asked questions: I understand you worked in the health care system for some time as a Chronic Disease Nurse. Why did you decide to switch gears and offer this medical weight loss program? Well, 98% of my job as a CDM Nurse was to help people make lifestyle changes to manage their medical condition. I had a lot of empathy for my patients that really struggled with the weight loss piece. The health system just does not have the resources to do the weekly coaching and support needed for individuals to have success in this area. Patients were only having success if they left the system and sought help from a private program and quickly gained the weight back once their program ended. What makes Ideal Protein different from other programs? First off, it is a medical protocol that has been tested and proven. The quality of the food is outstanding, and the ability of the body to absorb the good quality protein helps clients to stay full, feel satisfied and supports their muscle mass. Most other programs rely on calorie restriction, which slows metabolism and eats away at muscle. The Ideal Protein food offers only the highest quality protein with whole foods added in. The Ideal Protein is disguised as fun food, all the fun but without the corresponding cravings or binging that comes after eating sugar. I am uncomfortable eating processed foods; why can I not eat my own healthy foods? The goal by the end of the program is to have all clients on a whole food diet, supplementing with protein when needed. Let’s face it, most people have a high volume of convenience foods in their diet. While on Ideal Protein, they often triple their consumption of vegetables, salads and lean proteins. There is also an issue with healthy food causing weight gain. Some types of healthy foods still add up and store fat. Even worse, when we eat them, we crave more and more and tend to overeat. Those foods need to be eliminated completely for some clients to see success, but this is not permanent. There is no fruit or exercise on the diet. It sounds unhealthy? I would like to stress that yes, this is an unbalanced diet, but it is for a short period of time. Fruit comes back in phase 3. And it is not “no exercise”… walking, yoga and light exercise are allowed on IP and they are great forms of exercise. The focus while on the program is burning fat. I have seen enough clients try enough different things to firmly believe that exercise is for health and fitness and changing our food consumption is for fat loss.

$85 a week for the program seems expensive? Actually, as far as food-based programs go, Ideal Protein is the most reasonable. My clients that tried other food programs reported spending $1200 to $1500 per month. On Ideal Protein, clients spend $340 on food and $80 on supplements. The $4 protein meal is great value. It is less expensive that a latte or a piece of chicken, yet we absorb all of it! We are not packaging up 5 cent pasta and charging a fortune; we are giving a great quality protein food and decreasing the family food budget. Isn’t high protein hard on your kidneys and liver? I want to stress that this is not a high protein diet. Protein levels are kept at normal levels; just carbohydrate levels are dropped. There needs to be this unbalance or we never use the fat. Why would our body even go to the fat stores if there is any sugar to use? That will always be the body’s preference. You can run on a treadmill all day eating fruit and getting nowhere with your fat loss. When the fat is gone, we can go back to balance. Clients start eliminating medications in a month, which gives them good validation for choosing the program. We have seen some surprising benefits for individuals with digestive issues, celiac, thyroid issues, chronic pain or PCOS, which leads me to believe that sugar is causing a lot of these issues. All is see are outstanding blood work reports!! How much weight can I expect to lose each week? The average weight loss that I see is 3-4 lbs per week for women and 4-6 lbs a week for men. Which is as fast as it should be. It needs to be quick to keep people engaged and happy but not so quick it is harmful; this is not a starvation diet. I exercise heavily and I want to continue to exercise. Can I still do program? Yes, we have the original athletic protocol which was tested on Olympic athletes. It is a bit more balanced allowing fruit, starch and dairy daily, but there is a limit. Just enough for the activity. The rest of the day is fat burning. This is also a great program for people that want a slower balanced approach. Won’t I just gain it all back? One of the reasons I chose IP was because the maintenance program works so well. You phase off our food and onto whole foods. You are allowed a balanced diet in maintenance, even a weekly cheat day. However, if you get a little out of control you go back to your coach and do a correction. For example, something stressful comes up and you gain 4 lbs, you correct it immediately after; we never let pounds build up over time. Ideal Protein reduces barriers, making this accessible to clients without having to “sign up” to an extensive program, and we never close our relationship.

Take a Healthy Leap Forward and Never Look Back! Clients from Langdon or Chestermere may weigh in at Langdon or Calgary offices as well.

My Favourite – Fantastic – Fabulous And Fun Stuff Raise your hand if you have found that as you get older, your memory gets worse. My hand is up!

I

just celebrated my birthday on September 30th and I am not afraid to say I am now 57 years young. After all, it is just a number; how you feel on the inside is what matters – right? I have never had a great memory but I have noticed over the past few years if I don’t write it down, I am doomed to forget. I have lists all over my house, on the kitchen table, in my office and even on my nightstand. I always ask anyone I make an appointment with to please call me the day before to remind me and I am ashamed to say even then I have mindlessly still forgotten!! Seriously, this is a problem, so in my endeavor to find a miracle drug to help me (and I’m terrified of dementia and Alzheimer’s), I came across an herb called “Bacopa”, also known as water hyssop or brahmi. It grows wild throughout India, where it has been used in “Ayurveda medicine” since at least the sixth century AD as a tonic for the nervous system and heart. Packed with phytosterols and flavonoids, bacopa’s real claim to fame is bacopasides - the saponins thought to repair damaged neurons in the brain. Ayurveda, which means “life sciences” in Sanskrit, is a holistic system of Indian medicine that evolved between 3000 and 5000 years ago. Bacopa is becoming more and more popular throughout the world, and is still used by the majority of people in India to treat a variety of health problems, because not only is it time-tested for its safety and effectiveness, it is accessible and inexpensive. Bacopa monniera, named Brahmi in the Ayurveda texts, probably for Lord Brahma, the Hindu creator of the world and originator of Ayurveda is recognized as a powerful brain enhancer. It is still considered to be the greatest herb in Ayurveda for treating age-related mental decline, as well as for improving cognitive processes, including comprehension, memory and recall. It also enhances the crucial coordination of these three aspects of mental functioning, and helps increase one’s ability to solve problems. Bacopa interacts with the dopamine and serotonergic systems, but its main mechanism concerns promoting neuron communication. It does this by enhancing the rate at which the nervous system can communicate by increasing the growth of nerve endings, also called dendrites. It is also an antioxidant. But be aware, taking Bacopa on an empty stomach may cause nausea,

46 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. In a 2001 study of healthy adults, participants who took 300 mg of bacopa for 12 weeks showed significant improvements in memory (in addition to learning and anxiety). And in a 2008 study of 48 dementia-free older adults (ages 65 and up), researchers found that 12 weeks of treatment with bacopa (at a dose of 300 mg per day) led to significant improvements in memory, depression, anxiety, and heart rate. Not only that, but findings from animal studies and test-tube research suggested that bacopa may help fight Alzheimer’s disease. In a 2008 study of brain cells in culture, scientists discovered that antioxidants in bacopa helped suppress oxidative stress (a destructive process thought to contribute to Alzheimer’s disease). And in a 2010 study on rats with an animal model of Alzheimer’s disease, bacopa appeared to preserve memory and protect against loss of function in brain cells. That certainly sounds promising; perhaps there is hope for me after all. Although bacopa is generally considered safe, it may cause side effects such as dry mouth, nausea, and muscle fatigue. Like anything new, if you’re considering the use of bacopa, make sure to consult your physician before you begin taking the herb. Now bacopa is not your only choice, you may have heard of “Ginko biloba” which has been around forever. Ginkgo is often used for memory disorders including Alzheimer’s disease. It is also used for conditions that seem to be due to reduced blood flow in the brain, especially in older people. These conditions include memory loss, headache, ringing in the ears, vertigo, difficulty concentrating, mood disturbances, and hearing disorders. Some people use it for other problems related to poor blood flow in the body, including leg pain when walking (claudication), and Raynaud’s syndrome (a painful response to cold, especially in the fingers and toes). Taking these herbs is not going to miraculously change you overnight; they say you probably won’t notice any effects for six to eight weeks. Ginkgo has low toxicity, although it may cause mild stomach irritation. And last but not least “Turmeric” it is the spice that gives curry its yellow colour. It has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb. Recently, science has started to back up what the Indians have known for a long time… it really does contain compounds with medicinal properties. These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant and it has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier. It is known that inflammation and oxidative damage play a role in Alzheimer’s disease and curcumin has beneficial effects on both. One key feature of Alzheimer’s disease is a buildup of protein tangles called Amyloid plaques. Studies show that curcumin can help clear these plaques. Did you know Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world and a leading cause of dementia? So I guess this is a pretty important article, now isn’t it? I will be making a trip to my friendly health food store this week to stock up on Bacopa, Ginko biloba and turmeric capsules. I’m not taking any chances – more is better, right?

You can buy Bacopa and many other supplements at Sangsters. See their ad on page 43 Stay healthy! Kathryn Hartwell Source: betternutrition.com, altmedicine.about, drweil.com, authoritynutrition.com

Top 8 Foods And Herbs For Healing Cancer With 44% of men and 39% of women now being diagnosed with cancer, it has become more important than ever to understand the foods that will not only nourish your body, but also detoxify it of any cancer causing agents. Here are some of the most potent cancer healing foods and herbs, and how you can use them so your body can do the work of healing itself. Sea Vegetables Kelp, kombu, and nori are three of the more common sea vegetables with remarkable effects on cancer. They are one of the richest and most bioavailable sources of iodine, a substance lacking in the average diet that is implicated in many patients with breast and ovarian cancer. They are also rich in calcium and potassium, as well as all minerals, which assist in promoting a very alkaline environment, which makes it very difficult for existing cancer to survive. You can use sea vegetables in soups, salads, and smoothies. Algae Chlorella and spirulina are two of the most potent algae and are proven cancer fighters. Due to their incredible detoxification action (including binding to and eliminating heavy metals) and immune boosting properties (by promoting production of healthy gut flora and fighting candida overgrowth), they are a must have when healing cancer. They also contain the entire B-vitamin complex, Vitamin A, C, E, and K, and are one of the whole food sources of vitamin D. Algae is also an exceptional source of iron and zinc, as well as magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and potassium. Also, the antioxidant and oxygen content of algae is through the roof. One of the most potent sources of chlorophyll (the life blood of plants), it is also rich in beta carotene, lutein, and polysaccharides. You can take algaes in liquid, capsule, or powder form. Cruciferous Vegetables Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage have been linked to lower cancer risks and have the ability to halt growth of cancer cells for tumours in the breast, uterine lining, lung, colon, liver, and cervix. It appears that a phytochemical called sulforaphane can stimulate enzymes that detoxify carcinogens before they damage cells, as well as indole 3-carbinol and crambene, which are also suspected of activating detoxification enzymes. ing these vegetables multiplies their benefits and helps aid a sluggish digestive system that is typically an issue with those suffering from cancer. Medicinal Mushrooms Medicinal mushrooms such as reishi and chaga have had a number of bioactive molecules, including anti-tumour agents, identified in their structure. These bioactive compounds include polysaccharides, alkaloids, tocopherols, phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids, folates, ascorbic acid enzymes, and organic acids. Studies show that long-term consumption of reishi prevents tumour proliferation and growth by increasing the level of antioxidants in an individual’s blood plasma while boosting the immunity of those suffering from advanced stage cancer. Medicinal mushrooms can be mainly used through capsules, powders, and teas. Aloe Vera Research shows strong immunomodulatory and anti-tumour properties for polysaccharides in aloe vera, which means it boosts immune system function and destroys cancer tumours. A study in International Immunopharmacology showed that Aloe Vera polysaccharides exhibited potent macrophage activating activities including producing increased volumes of nitric oxide, which has anti-tumour potential. Aloe Vera also has over 20 minerals, 12 vitamins, 18 amino acids, 200 active plant compounds, and strong antibacterial, viral, and fungal qualities. All of these properties are important when fuelling the body to heal cancer. Aloe Vera can be used in liquid and gel format, as well as capsules and powders. Hemp The hemp plant contains some of the most balanced and richest sources of oils on the planet, with an ideal ratio of 3:1 for omega 6 to omega 3. Hemp seed oil also contains 80% essential fatty acids, the highest of any plant. Essential fatty acids are fundamental to immune function due to their antioxidants and anti-inflammatory fatty acids, which helps oxidize the cells and restores health at a cellular level. Since cancer cannot survive in a highly oxygenated environment, the superb EFA content in hemp makes it a great option for healing cancer. It is also a rich source of phytonutrients, antioxidants, and plant sterols, all which are effective against the natural treatment of cancer. Garlic A double blind, randomized study with over 3000 human subjects for seven clinical years showed that cancer risk was cut by 60% for those with the highest intake of allium containing vegetables, including aged garlic. The miracle nutrient appears to be the enzyme alliinase (a nutrient in the Allium genus) which produces the anti-cancer

anti-cancer food that blocks cancer development in a number of unique ways. One of the most potent healing actions of turmeric is reducing inflammation, the root of all serious disease. Once you are able to significantly reduce inflammation in all areas of the body including the digestive system, an alkaline state can start to take over. Cancer does NOT thrive in an alkaline rich environment. Use turmeric in juice, vegetable dishes, salad dressings, or in a total body tonic. Healing cancer can be one of the most intimidating diseases to do naturally, but if you put the right foods in your mouth and eliminate these cancer causing factors, you give your body a fighting chance in the battle against this terrible disease.

never know the joy of being imperfect. I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. I can say ‘no’, and mean it. I can say ‘yes’, and mean it. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be wrong. So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day. Today, I wish you a day of ordinary miracles.

Old Age is a Gift - I Have Decided

WHITECAPPERS’ NEWS & HAPPENINGS

I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometimes despair over my body - the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I don’t agonize over those things for long.

I

would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, and my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend. I don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn’t need, but looks so avant-garde on my patio. I am entitled to overeat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 am, and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60’s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love... I will. I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the bikini set. They, too, will get old! I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten, and I eventually remember the important things. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will

Lemons Most people are familiar with the traditional uses for lemons to soothe sore throats and add some citrus flavour to our foods. However, the diversity of applications for lemons far exceeds general knowledge and once you read the following list, you’ll likely want to stock at least a few lemons in your kitchen 24-7. 1. Freshen the Fridge. Remove refrigerator odours with ease. Dab lemon juice on a cotton ball or sponge and leave it in the fridge for several hours. Make sure to toss out any malodorous items that might be causing the bad smell.

3. Prevent Cauliflower from Turning Brown. Cauliflower tend to turn brown with even the slightest cooking. You can make sure the white vegetables stay white by squeezing a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice on them before heating. 4. Mental Health. Lemon water can also prep up your mood

6. Respiratory Problems. Lemon water can reduce phlegm; and can also help you breathe properly and aids a person suffering with asthma.

8. Prevents Kidney Stones. Regular consumption of the refreshing drink — or even lemon juice mixed with water — may increase the production of urinary citrate, a chemical in the urine that prevents the formation of crystals that may build up into kidney stones. 9. Keep Insects Out of the Kitchen. You don’t need insecticides or ant traps to ant-proof your kitchen. Just give it the lemon treatment. First squirt some lemon juice on door thresholds and windowsills. Then squeeze lemon juice into any holes or cracks where the ants are getting in. Finally, scatter small slices of lemon peel around the outdoor entrance. The ants will get the message that they aren’t welcome. Lemons are also effective against roaches and fleas: Simply mix the juice of 4 lemons (along with the rinds) with 1/2 gallon (2 liters) water and wash your floors with it; then watch the fleas and roaches flee. They hate the smell.

5. Refresh Cutting Boards. No wonder your kitchen cutting board smells! After all, you use it to chop onions, crush garlic, and prepare fish. To get rid of the smell and help sanitize the cutting board, rub it all over with the cut side of half a lemon or wash it in undiluted juice straight from the bottle.

7. Treating Arthritis and Rheumatism. Lemon is a diuretic – assists in the production of urine which helps you to reduce inflammation by flushing out toxins and bacteria while also giving you relief from arthritis and rheumatism.

2. High Blood Pressure. Lemon contains potassium, which controls high blood pressure and reduces the effect of nausea and dizziness.

and relieve you from depression and stress. Long distance walkers and world travelers, as well as explorers, look upon the lemon as a godsend. When fatigue begins, a lemon is sucked through a hole in the top. Quick acting medicine it is, giving almost unbelievable refreshments.

The Best A popular question to a retailer: What is your best (fill in blank)? This is a challenge, something along the line of how high is up? What is really being asked is what the best (blank) for my needs is? This is where retailer and servicer expertise should really shine and where the ‘online shopping world’ or the big box mega world can have a less than glorious result. A great example; a fully featured dishwasher has a ‘china/crystal cycle’ on it. This is a valuable cycle for someone who entertains a lot with fine china or crystal but for many of us who might use this setting once or twice a year, is it really a good value? Are there other features that would be better suited to our lifestyle? Manufacturers make various products in any single line, be it (blanks), mattresses or appliances there is substantial choice, even in categories. In laundry, there are traditional top load washers, HE top load washers and HE front load washers. All have different levels of features and all wash clothes. If you are a single person working away from home a lot, your laundry needs will be considerably different from a busy family with children active in school or after school activities. You have a lifestyle and requirements to support that lifestyle, along with minimizing roadblocks from the very household items that are supposed to be helping you. A mattress that leaves you feeling like being dragged backwards through a snowblower in the morning isn’t helping you.

‘Online’ can help by letting you what products are available and their specifications. Product reviews are something we read but how valid are they? View all reviews critically – both good and bad as well as looking at the product before making a judgment. Example: A manufacturer makes over a million (blanks) a year. If 1% of those have a defect – that’s 10,000. If the manufacturer makes errors in handling the problem on 1% of these, that’s 100 unhappy clients. The majority of the satisfied 999,900 thousand probably won’t be writing reviews. There are, of course, cases where the manufacturer blows it and doesn’t accept responsibility - both online and your in-person retailer should have a good grip on this one. One of the problems with ‘best’ is price. Does a low price mean low quality? What if it’s a high priced item on sale (legitimate sale…we all know the weekly, never ending ‘on sale’ scenarios)? Marketing has a technique called priming. Consumers are ‘primed’ to believe great sale prices are coming and at the same time ‘primed’ to believe quality is high. ‘Priming’ is frequently seen in ‘opinion writing’ where advertising is disguised as news. Bear in mind, in some cases sale prices are legitimate means of marketing and quality is good. What do you do??? Your local independent retailer chooses their products, knows product quality and can help with what is ‘best’ for your lifestyle, needs and budget. Remember: there are four sides to every story; One side – the other side – the political / media side and the truth. Drop in on www.sciencedaily.com – might or might not help with your mattress but a very interesting site. ~PJs Appliances

Continued from page 52 pesticides or dirt may be lurking on the skin of your favourite fruits and vegetables. Slice your lemon and squeeze out one tablespoon of lemon juice into your spray bottle. The lemon juice is a natural disinfectant and will leave your fruits and vegetables smelling nice, too. 12. Treat Infections. Lemon water can fight throat infections thanks to its antibacterial property. If salt water does not work for you, try lemon and water for gargling.

22. Cleanse Your Face. Zap zits naturally by dabbing lemon juice on blackheads to draw them out during the day. You can also wash your face with lemon juice for a natural cleanse and exfoliation. Your skin should improve after several days of treatment. Lemon water is also a cooling agent, best way to beat the heat. 23. Freshen Your Breath. Make an impromptu mouthwash by rinsing with lemon juice straight from the bottle. Swallow for longer-lasting fresh breath. The citric acid in the juice alters the pH level in your mouth, killing bacteria that causes bad breath. Rinse after a few minutes because long-term exposure to the acid in lemons can harm tooth enamel.

13. Deodorize Your Garbage. If your garbage is beginning to smell yucky, here’s an easy way to deodorize it: Save leftover lemon and orange peels and toss them at the base under the bag. To keep it smelling fresh, repeat once every couple of weeks.

24. Treat Flaky Dandruff. If itchy, scaly dandruff has you scratching your head, relief may be no farther away than your refrigerator. Just massage two tablespoons lemon juice into your scalp and rinse with water. Then stir one teaspoon lemon juice into one cup water and rinse your hair with it. Repeat daily until your dandruff disappears.

14. Keep Guacamole Green. You’ve been making guacamole all day long for the big party, and you don’t want it to turn brown on top before the guests arrive. The solution: sprinkle a liberal amount of fresh lemon juice over it and it will stay fresh and green. The flavour of the lemon juice is a natural complement to the avocados in the guacamole. Make the fruit salad hours in advance too. Just squeeze some lemon juice onto the apple slices, and they’ll stay snowy white. 15. Purges the Blood. We consume a lot of junk food or food with a lot of preservatives and artificial flavours. This builds up a lot of toxins in the blood and body but daily consumption of lemon water helps to purify the blood.

25. Get Rid of Tough Stains on Marble. You probably think of marble as stone, but it is really petrified calcium (also known as old seashells). That explains why it is so porous and easily stained and damaged. Those stains can be hard to remove. If washing won’t remove a stubborn stain, try this: Cut a lemon in half, dip the exposed flesh into some table salt, and rub it vigorously on the stain. But do this only as a last resort; acid can damage marble. Rinse well.

16. Make Soggy Lettuce Crisp. Don’t toss that soggy lettuce into the garbage. With the help of a little lemon juice, you can toss it in a salad instead. Add the juice of half a lemon to a bowl of cold water. Then put the soggy lettuce in it and refrigerate for 1 hour. Make sure to dry the leaves completely before putting them into salads or sandwiches.

26. Remove Berry Stains. It sure was fun to pick your own berries, but now your fingers are stained with berry juice that won’t come off no matter how much you scrub with soap and water. Try washing your hands with undiluted lemon juice, then wait a few minutes and wash with warm, soapy water. Repeat until your hands are stain-free.

17. Oral Health. Lemon juice also stops bleeding gums and reduces toothaches.

27. Soften Dry, Scaly Elbows. Itchy elbows are bad enough, but they look terrible too. For better looking (and feeling) elbows, mix baking soda and lemon juice to make an abrasive paste, then rub it into your elbows for a soothing, smoothing, and exfoliating treatment. Rinse your extremities in a mixture of equal parts lemon juice and water, then massage with olive oil and dab dry with a soft cloth.

18. Lighten Age Spots. Why buy expensive creams when you’ve got lemon juice? To lighten liver spots or freckles, try applying lemon juice directly to the area. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then rinse your skin clean. It’s a safe and effective skin-lightening agent. 19. Create Blonde Highlights. For salon-worthy highlights, add 1/4 cup lemon juice to 3/4 cup water and rinse your hair with the mixture. Then, sit in the sun until your hair dries. To maximize the effect, repeat once daily for up to a week.

28. Headaches. Lemon juice with a few teaspoons of hot tea added is the treatment of a sophisticated New York bartend-

20. Make a Room Scent/Humidifier. Freshen and moisturize the air in your home on dry winter days. Make your own room scent that also doubles as a humidifier. If you have a wood-burning stove, place an enameled cast-iron pot or bowl on top, fill with water, and add lemon (and/or orange) peels, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and apple skins. No wood-burning stove? Use your stovetop instead and just simmer the water periodically. 21. Clean and Whiten Nails. Pamper your hands without a manicurist. Add the juice of 1/2 lemon to 1 cup warm water and soak your fingertips in the mixture for 5 minutes. After pushing back the cuticles, rub some lemon peel back and forth against the nail. before washing. 38. Clean Tarnished Brass and Polish Chrome. Say good-bye to tarnish on brass, copper, or stainless steel. Make a paste of lemon juice and salt (or substitute baking soda or cream of tartar for the salt) and coat the affected area. Let it stay on for 5 minutes. Then wash in warm water, rinse, and polish dry. Use the same mixture to clean metal kitchen sinks too. Apply the paste, scrub gently, and rinse. Get rid of mineral deposits and polish chrome faucets and other tarnished chrome. Simply rub lemon rind over the chrome and watch it shine! Rinse well and dry with a soft cloth.

er, for those who suffer with hangover headaches–and from headaches due to many other causes. He converts his customers to this regime, and weans them away from drug remedies completely.

39. Replace Your Dry Cleaner. Ditch the expensive dry-cleaning bills (and harsh chemicals) with this homegrown trick. Simply scrub the stained area on shirts and blouses with equal parts lemon juice and water. Your “pits” will be good as new, and smell nice too.

29. Chills and Fevers. Chills and fevers may be due to a variety of causes; never the less, the lemon is always a helpful remedy. Spanish physicians regard it as an infallible friend. 30. Diptheria. Skip the vaccine for this disease. Lemon Juice Treatment still proves as one of the most powerful antiseptics and the strong digestive qualities of the fruit are admired around the world. With the juice every hour or two, and at the same time, 1/2 to 1 tsp. should be swallowed. This cuts loose the false membrane in the throat and permits it to come out. 31. Vaginal Hygiene. Diluted lemon juice makes a safe and sane method of vaginal hygiene. Though it is a powerful antiseptic, it is nevertheless free from irritating drugs in douches and suppositories.

40. Boost Laundry Detergent. For more powerful cleaning action, pour 1 cup lemon juice into the washer during the wash cycle. The natural bleaching action of the juice will zap stains and remove rust and mineral discolorations from cotton T-shirts and briefs and will leave your clothes smelling fresh. Your clothes will turn out brighter and also come out smelling lemon-fresh. 41. Rid Clothes of Mildew. Have you ever unpacked clothes you stored all winter and discovered some are stained with mildew? To get rid of it, make a paste of lemon juice and salt and rub it on the affected area, then dry the clothes in sunlight. Repeat the process until the stain is gone.

32. Forget the Moth Balls. A charming French custom to keep closets free from moths is to take ripe lemons and stick them with cloves all over the skin. The heavily studded lemons slowly dry with their cloves, leaving a marvelous odour throughout the closets and rooms.

42. Eliminate Fireplace Odour. There’s nothing cozier on a cold winter night than a warm fire burning in the fireplace unless the fire happens to smell horrible. Next time you have a fire that sends a stench into the room, try throwing a few lemon peels into the flames. Or simply burn some lemon peels along with your firewood as a preventive measure.

33. Stomach Health. Digestive problems are the most common ailments, but warm water and lemon juice is the solution to most digestive problems. Lemon juice helps to purify the blood, reduces your chances of indigestion, constipation, eliminates toxins from the body, adds digestion and reduces phlegm.

43. Neutralize Cat-Box Odour. You don’t have to use an aerosol spray to neutralize foul-smelling cat-box odours or freshen the air in your bathroom. Just cut a couple of lemons in half, then place them, cut side up, in a dish in the room, and the air will soon smell lemon-fresh.

34. Disinfect Cuts and Scrapes. Stop bleeding and disinfect minor cuts and scrapes by pouring a few drops of lemon juice directly on the cut. You can also apply the juice with a cotton ball and hold firmly in place for one minute.

44. Deodorize a Humidifier. When your humidifier starts to smell funky, deodorize it with ease: Just pour 3 or 4 teaspoons lemon juice into the water. It will not only remove the off odour but will replace it with a lemon-fresh fragrance. Repeat every couple of weeks to keep the odour from returning.

35. Soothe Poison Ivy Rash. You won’t need an ocean of calamine lotion the next time poison ivy comes a-creeping. Just apply lemon juice directly to the affected area to soothe itching and alleviate the rash. 36. Remove Warts. You’ve tried countless remedies to banish warts and nothing seems to work. Next time, apply a dab of lemon juice directly to the wart using a cotton swab. Repeat for several days until the acids in the lemon juice dissolve the wart completely. 37. Bleach Delicate Fabrics. Avoid additional bleach stains by swapping ordinary household chlorine bleach with lemon juice, which is milder but no less effective. Soak your delicates in a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda for at least half an hour

45. Reduce Asthma Symptoms. In addition to a general detoxifying diet, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice before each meal, and before retiring can reduce asthma symptoms. 46. Under Arm Deodorant. Nowadays, many people are more knowledgeable about what they put on and in their bodies. Deodorant is no exception. Want to smell fresh without the harmful ingredients in a name-brand deodorant? Take a lemon, cut it in half, and rub it on your armpits. You will not smell bad all day, and there are no harmful chemicals on you! Keep the cut lemon in an air-tight container and re-use for a few days, cutting the lemon smaller as it dries out. Warning: if you shave your armpits, be prepared for a little stinging as you use your lemon deodorant right after! The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Steps to take to help get your home sold. Clear out the over furnished rooms; put it all in storage if need be. A buyer is looking for a home for their family. Give them room to visualize their own belongings in the space.

5. Clean

2. De-Clutter And De-Personalize

There is just no such thing as too clean. Wipe your walls, door frames, windows, and power wash the outside. Floors should be gleaming; get those cobwebs from the ceiling fan!

Keep your bills, old magazine clippings, etc. off of the fridge. Pack away those prized pin collections, dolls, bears, ornaments. etc. Potential buyers will become distracted by looking at your thenewsyneighbour.com

4. Remember, The Next Buyer Is As Lazy As You Are. If your home needs work, has dated wallpaper, ratty carpet, banged up walls, doors, dripping faucets, or missing downspouts, you’re better off to address it before you list your home. A potential buyer walking through your home is mentally calculating the time, effort and money it will take them to fix it all. The result? Too much work to bother putting in an offer for them, so they move on to the next property. Or, they may still proceed to throw in an offer that will be low to compensate for all of those little things.

1. Make Room

When you walk in your front door, does your house smell? Kitty litter, dog pee, dirty diapers, smoke, stale food odours, etc. This is one of the biggest turn offs to a buyer and they just won’t be able to get past it. So open the windows, and ensure your home always smells nice.

6. Make Your Home Ageless Keep it neutral. You may love the lemon yellow walls or a different colour in every single room, but while its only paint, a potential buyer will not see past it. It’s a relatively cheap fix… neutralize.

7. Avoid Controversy Not all potential buyers will appreciate your deer head on the wall. Be aware of the books and magazines that you have displayed.

8. Walk A Mile In My Shoes Picture yourself as the buyer. Try to view your home through their eyes. Now change or fix anything that you notice would be an issue for you if you were the buyer.

Are you prepared for a pandemic? No really, are you prepared? What if you could not leave your house for a long time? Could you do it? Do you have enough food and water on hand if the worst was about to happen?

I

Extra N95 masks (3M 1860 Health Care N95 Particulate Respirator and Surgical Mask) Nitrile gloves Safety goggles with an elastic band to ensure a snug fit Antibacterial cleaners such as disposable wipes, bleach, and spray cleaners Antibacterial hand sanitizer

am by no means one of those doom and gloom people, but it is possible: the worst could happen. When the CDC tells us to prepare for the Ebola pandemic, maybe we should pay attention. Maybe, just maybe, things are about to get real! Isn’t it better to be safe than sorry? As you can well imagine, there are numerous sites on the internet describing what you should have stockpiled. This is what theorganicprepper.com recommends: What You Need Right Now Right now, before panic ensues, you need to ensure that you have everything you need to survive as though the world we know has ended. You need to be prepared to stay in your home for weeks, if not months. You need to be ready for a potential disruption of services. Best case scenario: You get these supplies, the outbreak never occurs, and you can dole them out into your regular usage or stash them with your “prepper” stockpile. Worst case scenario: You read this warning, you do nothing, and then the outbreak occurs. You realize that the “prepper” folks aren’t so crazy after all. But by then, it will be too late to stock up. The following is a list of supplies that you may soon need:

Drinking water (1 gallon per person per day) Food (including items that don’t require fuel for preparation) Heavy duty garbage bags Sanitation supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, baby wipes, and feminine hygiene supplies) Entertainment – you’ll want to be able to keep children and restless family members busy so get craft supplies, books, games, and puzzles Basic medical supplies Pandemic kits that contain protective clothing 60 •

The CDC (Centres for Disease Control) has its own web-site @ cdc.gov with all the current information on the Ebola outbreak and the new cases in the United States. I took this excerpt from their site: 2014 West Africa Outbreak (http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/outbreaks/2014-west-africa/ index.html) The 2014 Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, affecting many countries in West Africa. Although the risk of an Ebola outbreak in the United States is very low, CDC and partners are taking precautions to prevent this from happening. On 9/30/2014, CDC confirmed the first travel-associated case of Ebola found in the United States. CDC and partners are taking precautions to prevent the spread of Ebola within the United States. CDC is working with other U.S. government agencies, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other domestic and international partners and has activated its Emergency Operations Center to help coordinate technical assistance and control activities with partners. CDC has also deployed teams of public health experts to West Africa and will continue to send experts to the affected countries. Trust me, I am not writing this article to scare you, but after doing some research I’m thinking it might not be such a bad idea to stock up a bit. You know the old saying, “it is better to be safe than sorry”. Kathryn Hartwell References: CDC.govn theorganicprepper.com

Ways to make your rental feel like home Emily Hogan is an interior designer from new and local design company Blyss Interiors. Her strong experience in the window covering industry has inspired her to offer those services to Strathmore and area as well as her savvy & stylish design style. If you have any questions for her call her at 403-901-4467 or email to info@blyssinteriors.ca. She would be happy to hear from you! F or those of you who are still in the rental market, it is tough to really make your space feel like home with tenant restrictions on additions and changes you can make to your space. Painting is not normally allowed, or can be more of a hassle when you vacate and need to paint everything back to the basic builder beige. I truly feel it is important to put your stamp on wherever you reside, being a rental or purchased home, so I have come up with some ideas to add your style to your space that your landlord will approve of.

the cleaner it appears. Modular storage is a perfect way to add some function while keeping your items neat and tidy. These units are customizable in a number of ways to fit your space perfectly and for all your organizing needs. Decorative baskets and boxes will hide things you don’t want on display and also work as décor and visual interest in the space. A lighting fixture is one of the easier things you can switch back when it’s time to leave your rental – investing in a statement light fixture to replace the basic fixture (for instance, over your dining room table) will add drama and personal style to your abode. Don’t forget about what is underfoot; area rugs, even layered over existing carpet would be a great way to add depth, texture and colour to any room as well as to correspond with the overall scheme. Hopefully with these suggestions and ideas this will give you some weekend projects, motivation and ideas to turn your rental into one of a kind.

Pattern – this can be accomplished in many ways. One of my favourite ideas is using wrapping paper to line in behind book cases, wallpaper or fabric cuttings framed or stretched over a canvas to create a dramatic burst of colour and bold artwork. Wall decals are also a rental friendly option for wall décor, easily removable and with no damage to the walls this can be a great alternative solution for artwork. Your furniture items also say a lot about you – jazz up a plain chest of drawers with bright and cheery colours and new hardware, or reupholster a bench for a functional and stylish entry way piece. Invest in pretty bed linens, cushions and throws. This will soften the space and create a cozy retreat after a long day’s work. This will add a sense of luxury to your perhaps basic apartment. Most rentals are lacking in storage space, but the neater and tidier your space appears the better you feel in the space and
