From the Publishers October has always been a month of inspiration for me; there is that certain something in the air, almost the end of something and yet the beginning. I think the word I’m looking for is ‘anticipation’; anticipation of things to come with a new year approaching and a sadness of yet another year almost gone. But remember, the very best part about October is - you got it - Thanksgiving! We have some fabulous make-ahead ideas for your most special Thanksgiving dinner – you are going to love these; I can hardly wait for the day so I can give them all a try. One of our October themes this year is ‘inspiration’. It is one of those things that is so different for everyone. We hope with reading this special October Issue, we may inspire you with all the different articles, ideas and quotes. We have also included how to pick the perfect paint colour to inspire you to create a feeling

for your bedroom, living room or kitchen. Colour can change everything when it comes to the feeling of a room. When it’s cold and blustery out in November, be inspired and use these valuable tips when it comes to picking your next perfect paint colour. I have been waiting to write this Family Page article for quite a while now, waiting for the appropriate issue to fit the theme. Well, with this being our Inspiration Issue, it finally fits! No hints; just make sure you do not miss the fun you can have as a family with “Vision” and possibly change your life forever. Have an Inspired October! Kathryn, Aleesha and Denise

A BRIEF “NOTE” on PIANO CARE … submitted by Kathie L. Zakresky, Piano Tuner-Technician

Initially, much thoughtful time is expended in the consideration of bringing a piano into a home; for one’s own enjoyment and for valuable fun musical education of one’s children! Once the decisions of style choices and expenditure have been made, one must understand that the maintenance of a piano is integral to sustaining its value and longevity. In order to learn to play the piano properly and in the development of ear training, it should be in prime working order and be maintained at A440hz Universal Pitch, sustaining an appealing resonating quality of sound. In order to ensure these factors, it is necessary and wise to have a piano serviced at least on an annual basis. In discerning how often a piano should be tuned, there are many factors to consider; primarily its condition, humidity, and demands of use. There are many sizes of pianos, with thousands of parts, both moving and stationary. An average piano has apPage 12

The Newsy Neighbour

proximately 240 strings and tuning pins. The basic structure must be stable enough to sustain incredible amounts of overall tension, ranging possibly from 12 – 30 tons, depending on its size! As the weather/humidity changes, primarily the wood of the large soundboard is affected, causing movement of the bridges, *thus altering the tension* on the strings, ultimately causing the pitch to be either too sharp or too flat, depending on wet or dry weather conditions. Thus, the piano will be “out of tune”. Unless there is serious stability issues, the subtle changes usually are not detectable by an untrained “ear” until it is quite out of tune, possibly rendering need of a pitch raise, thus extra work and extra cost. A well maintained piano is more enjoyable to play and will provide an enrichment for a life-time! Always feel comfortable in consulting your Piano Technician. Also, there are many resources on the Internet to learn more about your piano and its care, such as www. pianofinders.com

The Hotel Bill Next time you think your hotel bill is too high you might want to consider this... A husband and wife are traveling by car from Key West to Boston. After almost twenty-four hours on the road, they’re too tired to continue, and they decide to stop for a rest. They stop at a nice hotel and take a room, but they only plan to sleep for four hours and then get back on the road. When they check out four hours later, the desk clerk hands them a bill for $350.00. The man explodes and demands to know why the charge is so high. He tells the clerk although it’s a nice hotel, the rooms certainly aren’t worth $350.00! When the clerk tells him $350.00 is the standard rate, the man insists on speaking to the Manager. The Manager appears, listens to the man, and then explains that the hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center that were available for the husband and wife to use. “But we didn’t use them,” the man complains. “Well, they are here, and you www.thenewsyneighbour.com

could have,” explains the Manager. He goes on to explain they could have taken in one of the shows for which the hotel is famous. “The best entertainers from New York, Hollywood and Las Vegas perform here,” the Manager says. “But we didn’t go to any of those shows,” complains the man again. “Well, we have them, and you could have,” the Manager replies. No matter what amenity the Manager mentions, the man replies, “But we didn’t use it!” The Manager is unmoved, and eventually the man gives up and agrees to pay. He writes a check and gives it to the Manager. The Manager is surprised when he looks at the check. “But sir,” he says, “this check is only made out for $50.00.” “That’s correct,” says the man. “I charged you $300.00 for sleeping with my wife.” “But I didn’t!” exclaims the Manager. “Well, too bad,” the man replies. “She was here and you could have.”

Don’t Talk To The Parrot

That’s Funny!!

Randy the dishwasher repairman was given specific instructions concerning the woman’s two pets. “The Rottweiler won’t hurt you, even though it looks fierce; but whatever you do, don’t talk to the parrot.”

If someone says you used too much butter or cheese on something, stop talking to them. You don’t need that kind of negativity.

Randy let himself in and set to work, and the dog just lay quietly on the carpet. But the parrot mocked him mercilessly the whole time. “Wow, you’re pretty fat,” the bird would say. “Hey, fatso, you couldn’t change the batteries in a flashlight, let alone fix a dishwasher.” Before long, Randy had had enough. “You know, bird, you think you’re pretty smart for someone with a brain the size of a pea.” The parrot was silent for a moment, and then, with a gleam in its eye, said, “All right. Get him, Spike.” - Terry Boas

When I get a headache, I take two aspirin and keep away from children; just like the bottle says. So, someone asked me, “Do you do crunches?” I said YES! I do Hershey’s Crunch... Captain Crunch... Nestle Crunch... I don’t mind going into work, but that 8 hour wait to go home really sucks! I forgot to post on Facebook that I was going to the gym. Now this whole workout is a waste of time. Talking on the phone with someone who has kids is like talking to someone with Tourette’s!

My Favourite Fabulous Fantastic & Fun Stuff

good quality olive oil, fresh herbs, and organic ingredients will give you a cleaner and stronger flavour in your finished olive oil. Wash all the ingredients going into your oil and let them dry as much as possible - preferably overnight. Bacteria can’t grow in the olive oil itself, but it can grow in the water left on the ingredients going into the oil. Also, find a bottle that has a good seal. Bruise your herbs gently to start to expose their oils and put them in your olive oil jar. Spices can be lightly toasted and crushed in a mortar and pestle. Fruits like chili peppers or lemons can be sliced thinly. Cover the ingredients with olive oil, seal the bottle, and let it sit in a cool, dark place for 1-2 weeks before using it. The oil will slowly infuse over this time. Do a taste test every so often to see how it’s coming along. Strain out the solids and re-bottle the oil once the flavour is to your liking, then store in the refrigerator. Botulism is definitely a concern when making any kind of infused olive oil, especially with garlic-infused olive oil. Infused olive oil will generally keep for up to one month, especially if kept refrigerated. If the ingredients in the olive oil start to show any signs of spoilage, discard the rest of the oil immediately.

I have always thought of myself as a bit of an herbalist; growing fresh herbs in my garden every year, reading a few books on the subject and even dabbling at making a few herbal remedies. This year in my garden I grew the common herbs such as oregano, chives, basil, parsley and thyme. I was reading through one of my herb books and became INSPIRED to make a few different infused oils. Herb-infused olive oil is fantastic for making a special salad dressing, drizzling over a dish of pasta, as a marinade or simply as an appetizer with chunks of a great artisan bread. Making it yourself is super easy - and can make a great DIY gift to share with your friends! Start with the best ingredients you can find or afford. Using www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Less strongly-flavoured oils like sunflower oil and safflower oil work best to give a more prominent herb flavour. If you begin with a monounsaturated oil such as olive oil or peanut oil, the infused oils should be refrigerated. These are highly perishable and can turn rancid quickly. Herb Suggestions: rosemary, thyme, basil, tarragon, summer savory, oregano, cilantro, marjoram, chervil, chives, dill, mint, parsley, or bay leaf. Spice Suggestions: cardamom, star anise, juniper, coriander, seeds, nutmeg, cinnamon, cumin, or cloves. The grocery stores offer a large selection of fresh herbs; just use your imagination and what INSPIRES YOU! Kathryn Hartwell The Newsy Neighbour

Joke That God Said... God said: “Frank, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, milkweeds and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colours by now. But, all I see are these green rectangles.” ST. FRANCIS: It’s the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers ‘weeds’ and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass. GOD: Grass? But, it’s so boring. It’s not colourful. It doesn’t attract butterflies, birds and bees; only grubs and sod worms. It’s sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there? ST. FRANCIS: Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn. GOD: The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy. ST. FRANCIS: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it-sometimes twice a week. GOD: They cut it? Do they then bale it like hay? ST. FRANCIS: Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags. GOD: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it? ST. FRANCIS: No, Sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away. GOD: Now, let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away? ST. FRANCIS: Yes, Sir. GOD: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work. ST. FRANCIS: You aren’t going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it, so they can continue to mow it and pay to Page 16

get rid of it. GOD: What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It’s a natural cycle of life. ST. FRANCIS: You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away. GOD: No!? What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose? ST. FRANCIS: After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves. GOD: And where do they get this mulch? ST. FRANCIS: They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch. GOD: Enough! I don’t want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you’re in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight? ST. CATHERINE: ‘Dumb and Dumber’, Lord. It’s a story about… GOD: Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis.

Halloween Facts • The first known mention of trick-or-treating in print in North America occurred in 1927 in Blackie, Alberta, CANADA. • Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas. • Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween. • Fifty percent of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared with 24% who prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% who preferred gum. • The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl’s call meant someone was about to die. • Black and orange are typically associated with Halloween. Orange is a symbol of strength and endurance and, along with brown and gold, stands for the harvest and autumn. Black is typically a symbol of death and darkness and acts as a reminder that Halloween once was a festival that marked the boundaries between life and death. • Scarecrows, a popular Halloween fixture, symbolize the ancient agricultural roots of the holiday. • Halloween has variously been called All Hallows’ Eve, Witches Night, Lamswool, Snap-Apple Night, Samhaim, and Summer’s End. • Scottish girls believed they could see images of Page 18

their future husband if they hung wet sheets in front of the fire on Halloween. Other girls believed they would see their boyfriend’s faces if they looked into mirrors while walking downstairs at midnight on Halloween. • Harry Houdini (1874-1926) was one of the most famous and mysterious magicians who ever lived. Strangely enough, he died in 1926 on Halloween night. • According to tradition, if a person wears his or her clothes inside out and then walks backwards on Halloween, he or she will see a witch at midnight. • Dressing up as ghouls and other spooks originated from the ancient Celtic tradition of townspeople disguising themselves as demons and spirits. The Celts believed that disguising themselves this way would allow them to escape the notice of the real spirits wandering the streets. • Halloween is thought to have originated around 4000 B.C., which means Halloween has been around for over 6,000 years. • Halloween celebrations in Hong Kong are known as Yue Lan or the “Festival of the Hungry Ghosts” during which fires are lit and food and gifts are offered to placate potentially angry ghosts who might be looking for revenge. • AND THE MOST IMPORTANT FACT OF ALL Children are more than twice as likely to be killed in a pedestrian/car accident on Halloween than on any other night.

“LEADERSHIP, HONESTY AND INTEGRITY” VOTE BOB SOBOL FOR COUNCILLOR

Bob brought a high level of responsibility, accountability and common sense to his two previous terms on Council (2007 to 2013). He is an experienced individual, as his resumé indicates:

• 30 year RCMP veteran • Heavily involved in Community Events • Strathmore Business owner (Boulevard Café, 2003 to 2005) • Excellent communicative (verbal and written) skills • Was dedicated to all Council committees he was a member of (Strathmore Wheatland Addiction Team, Citizens on Patrol, The Municipal Library, Strathmore’s Centennial Celebrations, Strathmore Assembly of Youth and Calgary Regional Partnership Transportation Committee, Alberta 55 Plus and Tour of Alberta)

Bob has a vision for the future of Strathmore. He believes:

• It is imperative that our commercial tax base increase • That all developments continue to adhere to our building bylaws/rules • That our Council continue to listen to and respond to the needs of this every-changing community. • That our Council continue to rally for downtown improvements • That a focus be placed on more pathways, an arts/culture facility and amenities aimed at our youth (additional hockey rink, indoor soccer field) • That Council continue to focus on balanced budgets and minimal tax increases. Bob has demonstrated a willingness to fight for his (and your) beliefs in Council and is someone prepared to make things happen when it benefits this Town. Here's what your fellow neighbours are saying about Bob... /BobSobolStrathmoreTownCouncil

"It is rare to find a leader who can balance preservation with progress. Councillor Sobol loves this town, and his patriotism is something we should all aspire to have as citizens. He has constantly impressed me with his concern for and pride in where we've come from, yet also with his drive and vision for where we can--and will--go." – Paul Sonsteby (Town of Strathmore) “I have had the privilege of serving on Town Council with Bob Sobol for the past 3 years. In this time, I have seen him display an incredible amount of dedication to Strathmore and its residents. He has volunteered and served on many committees, and he brings professionalism to his Town duties. He spent many hours volunteering during the blizzard Strathmore faced in 2011. Councilor Sobol also played a huge part in Strathmore’s 100th Anniversary celebration, and was instrumental in the Heritage Times Square Park, as well as the Centennial Gala. He is approachable, honest, and is always willing to work to improve Strathmore. He would bring solid experience and progressive ideas to Council. Councilor Sobol is one candidate you can be sure of, and he would shine if elected to another term. Sincerely, Pat Fule” “A group of us personally approached the previous council about an important issue and in the due process Bob Sobol was the only one who gave us great consideration. He listens, then works with you to find a solution and then does what he can to implement the results. He is a team player yet not afraid to take leadership on anything. I absolutely will vote for Bob Sobol.” - Debbie Murray (Resident of Strathmore for 46 yrs) “Bob Sobol has proven himself to be an excellent councillor for Strathmore. I think the fact he has been in business provides him with a great foundation to be in local government. Over the years Bob has served our community I have identified various concerns and issues which Bob immediately acted upon. I like the fact that Bob is forward-thinking and works to make our town more attractive and family-friendly with walking paths, parks, trees, and overall beautification. As we attract new families, new business opportunities will come, helping diversify our tax base. Thanks for demonstrating your competence and strategic actions Bob!!!” Diane Berreth (Town of Strathmore) "In his six year tenure, Bob Sobol has gained the knowledge and understanding necessary to be an effective public servant. He has been very involved and visible in all aspects of his duties on Town Council. Bob is honest, trustworthy, outspoken, and certainly will make the difficult call for the betterment of our community. Bob will continue to serve effectively when re-elected." Dennis Groenhof, retired RCMP and Barb Gladeau, retired School Teacher (Town of Strathmore) We completely support Bob Sobol in his bid to run as a Town Councillor for another term. He is a very upstanding citizen with a strong belief in what he can do to help Strathmore become even better, and he will stand up for what is right and speak on behalf of residents of this Town. We feel he is a very strong asset to Council, and hope he has the opportunity to continue to work with us. Good luck, Bob!!” Koreann and Don Bland (Town of Strathmore) Whether I am volunteering with Bob Sobol on one project or another or working professionally with Councillor Bob Sobol on one of the many committees he sits on as a town councillor, Bob continues to display his pride and commitment to promoting the town of Strathmore and his dedication, care and concern for our towns youth, residents and businesses. Sincerely,Kevin Keegan (Magnetsigns Strathmore)

Luscious Joys My INSPIRATION for luscious joys this fine October is once again my garden. I was lucky enough to purchase some very fine blueberry bushes for my yard this year. Now, there will not be an overabundance of blueberries this season, but I’m hoping next year they will provide enough to make at least a pie. For those of you lucky enough to have a crop of these most healthy anti-oxidant berries, I have found a few absolutely scrumptious blueberry recipes. ENJOY!! By the way, if you have any extras, I would be more than happy to trade zucchini for berries.

When scones are ready, split and insert a Brie slice in each. Enjoy.

Cheesecake with Blueberry Sauce

The key to cooking a great cheesecake is: treat it like a custard and not a cake. Don’t over beat the mixture at any point and bake in a low oven. I also add some cornstarch to my cheesecakes for stability. Crust 1 cup graham wafer crumbs 1/4 cup melted butter Filling 2 packages cream cheese at room temperature (500 grams) 3/4 sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla Pinch of salt Wild Blueberry Sauce 6 eggs, separated 2 cups wild blueberries (fresh or 1/2 cup sour cream frozen) Juice of 1 lemon (about ¼ cup) 1/4 cup sugar Zest of 1 lemon 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon lemon juice www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Crust: Preheat oven to 275 degrees F. Combine graham wafer crumbs and melted butter in a small bowl. Stir well. Trace bottom of a 9-inch spring form pan onto parchment paper. Cut out parchment paper. Butter spring form pan. Fit parchment circle into bottom of pan. Butter the paper. Press the crust evenly into bottom of pan pressing to secure. Chill. Filling: In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, sugar and salt. Beat just until smooth. Do not over beat the mixture – you don’t want to incorporate too much air in the cheesecake – it increases the chances for the cake to crack and fall. Add the egg yolks three at a time, beating after each addition. Scrape down sides of bowl and add the sour cream, lemon juice, vanilla and zest. Blend until just smooth, careful not to over beat the mixture. Add cornstarch and mix until smooth. In a clean stainless bowl, whip the egg whites until soft peaks hold. Fold egg whites gently but quickly into cheese mixture, making sure no streaks of the egg whites remain. Again do not over beat the mixture. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in middle of oven for 70 minutes or until cake is just firm. Increase oven temperature to 300 degrees F. Cook another 10 minutes until cake is golden. Turn oven off and open oven door. Leave cake in oven for another 20 minutes. Remove and cool completely. Wild Blueberry Sauce Combine blueberries, sugar, corn starch, and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Over low heat, cook mixture, mashing blueberries slightly, until sauce has reduced and slightly thickens, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Serve warm over cooled cake.

Homemade Blueberry Jam

Here’s all the flavour of old-fashioned jam without the bother of boiling jars and processing the finished product, because you keep it in the freezer. 6-1/2 cups fresh blueberries, coarsely chopped* 1 package (1.75 ounces) granulated fruit pectin for lower sugar or 4-1/2 cups sugar, divided 1 tablespoon ground ginger or 2 teaspoons finely grated orange rind, optional *Place whole blueberries in a food processor container; pulse until coarsely chopped. Or, place blueberries in a bowl; crush with a potato masher or pastry blender. In a large saucepan, combine blueberries and 1/2 cup water. In a small bowl, stir together pectin and 1/4 cup of the sugar. Stir pectin mixture into blueberries. Over high heat, stirring constantly, bring mixture to a rolling boil. Add the remaining 4-1/4 cups sugar all at once; return to a rolling boil. Boil exactly 1 minute, stirring constantly; remove from heat; skim off any foam; set aside until cool enough to handle, about 30 minutes. Transfer to 1-cup freezer containers, filling to about 1/2 inch from the top; continue to cool at room temperature until jam has set; cover and freeze. Thaw to serve; store any leftover jam in the refrigerator for up to one month. Remember, you can’t go wrong eating blueberries, named nature’s “Superfruit” by researchers in Canada and U.S. who keep finding more health benefits from this tasty little berry. Being one of the best sources of antioxidants, blueberries can help slow the aging process and reduce cell damage that can lead to cancer, cardiovascular disease and loss of brain function.

1 tbsp vegetable oil ¼ cup shallot or white onion, finely minced So, do not waste a single little berry off your bushes – and remember 1 tbsp fresh garlic (approx. 3 cloves), minced ME!! 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp salt 2 tsp pepper 3 cups blueberries - fresh or frozen Kathryn Hartwell 1 tsp smoked paprika powder ¾ cup brown sugar, packed ½ tsp dry mustard powder ½ cup tomato ketchup ½ tsp hot chili flakes or powder ¼ cup honey 2 tbsp lemon juice-fresh 1 tbsp Balsamic vinegar In a large sauce pan, sauté the shallot and garlic in the vegetable oil over a low heat, until golden brown, about 7-10 minutes. Add all the ingredients except the lemon juice. Bring to a boil, and then continue to simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally. Cook until mixture is thickened and reduced, approximately 50-60 minutes. Add in the lemon juice and cool mixture. Puree in a blender until smooth. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Past studies have shown that some older dogs with CCD have brain lesions similar to those that physicians see in Alzheimer’s patients. The result of these changes is a deterioration of how your dog thinks, learns, and remembers, which causes behavioural changes that can disrupt the lives of both you and your dog. If your senior dog doesn’t seem to be herself, she may be part of the large percentage of dogs age 10 and older who experience some symptoms of CCD, which include various stages of confusion and disorientation. Your dog may have CCD if she has a number of the following behaviours: • Becomes lost in familiar places around the home or backyard • Becomes trapped behind familiar furniture or in room corners • Has trouble finding and using doors and negotiating stairways • Does not respond to her name or familiar commands • Is withdrawn and unwilling to play, go for walks, or even go outside • Does not recognize or is startled by family members, toys, etc. • Frequently trembles or shakes, either while standing or lying down • Paces or wanders aimlessly throughout the house • Has difficulty learning new tasks, commands, or routes • Frequently soils in the house, regardless of the frequency she is brought outside • Sleeps more during the day, less during the night • Stares at walls or into space and is startled by interior lighting, the television, etc. • Seeks less and less of your attention, praise, and play • Is hesitant to take treats, drink fresh water, or eat fresh food Coping with Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Page 2424 Page

An older dog that develops geriatric behaviour differences isn’t a rare occurrence. For years, veterinarians have attributed these symptoms to senility or normal aging and few treatment options were available. But continued scientific advances are changing both the views about and treatment of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction. In fact, if you suspect your dog has CCD, make a special appointment or tell your veterinarian during one of the recommended twiceyearly visits for senior dogs. Many people simply do not mention their dog’s changed lifestyle to their veterinarians, believing it is just “old age.â€? But a combination of a number of the above symptoms are not normal to the aging process and certain options are available to help treat or curb both this syndrome in its entirety and its individual components. Your veterinarian will take a behavioural and medical history and conduct a thorough physical and neurological exam. Many CCD symptoms are shared with other serious ailments. For instance, decreased activity could be a sign of advanced arthritis, inattentiveness could be a result of acute hearing or vision loss, and incontinence could stem from a serious urinary infection or kidney disease. But once your veterinarian has eliminated other conditions and has made a diagnosis of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, you and your veterinarian can explore treatment options. Unfortunately, there is no cure for CCD. But a prescribed drug is readily available and, though expensive, has shown significant effectiveness towards improving your dog’s life and her enjoyment of it. This drug, selegiline or L-deprenyl (brand name Anipryl) increases the amount of dopamine in your dog’s brain. Dopamine is a chemical substance that transmits nerve impulses within the brain during normal function. Though it doesn’t work in all dogs, it may help your dog think more clearly and remember more, thereby allowing her to enjoy more of her life. As with all medications, however, side effects do exist and this drug does interact with other prescribed medications. Your veterinarian will discuss these problems with you. In the meantime, you can help your dog cope with CCD by considering her needs when it comes to your home, its surroundings, and the environment it creates for your dog. By incorporating a little care and a modified, veterinarian-recommended lifestyle, you may be able to increase your dog’s brain activity and halt further CCD advancement. In fact, the latest studies have found that regular, moderate physical activity, mental stimulation with interactive toys, and a diet rich in antioxidants may help maintain your aging dog’s mental health. Again, your veterinarian should be consulted before changing any of your dog’s exercise or feeding regimens; but also try to keep your senior dog’s environment familiar and friendly, and: • Try not to change, rearrange, or even refurbish furniture • Eliminate clutter to create wide pathways through your house • Consider purchasing or building a ramp for any stairways • Know your dog’s limits when introducing new toys, food, people, or other animals • Develop a routine feeding, watering, and walking schedule • Keep commands short, simple, and compassionate • Encourage gentle and involved, short play sessions Most importantly, keep your patience and compassion. Your dog’s world has changed, but every effort should be made to show her that your love, respect, and pride of her past and present abilities have not changed and never will. Keep loving them just as you always have. Reference: drsfostersmith.com

Ask the Vet Q: My friend told me that dogs shouldn’t be allowed to eat bones from chicken or ham. Is this true? A: With Thanksgiving rolling around the corner, what a perfect time to talk about feeding your pet table scraps and bones. Any type of bone can potentially be hazardous to your pet. A chicken bone has sharp small bones that may lacerate the gums, mouth or tongue. In severe instances if swallowed, it can even lacerate the esophagus, stomach or intestines. Furthermore, cooked bones have a greater ability to splinter, which makes them even more dangerous. Larger bones such as ham bones may be swallowed whole. This may present a choking hazard, or could even lodge in the intestines or stomach. If your pet is unable to pass the bone, emergency surgery is required.

Isn’t it unfair that women love cats? Cats are independent, they don’t listen, they don’t come when you call, they like to stay out all night and when they are at home they like to be left alone to sleep. In other words, every quality that women hate in a man, they love in a cat. - Terry Sangster Order your copy of the Pouty Puppy today! www.thepoutypuppy.com

Not only do bones present an issue, but table scraps not only make your pet obese, but they can make your pet sick. High fat foods can cause increased liver enzymes, and pancreatic disorders. Diabetes is always cause for concern in an overweight pet. We will often see a high incidence of dogs become sick over the holidays after receiving table scraps with all of the “fixings” from a festive Thanksgiving dinner. Often dogs and/or cats will develop diarrhea, vomiting www.thenewsyneighbour.com www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Thanksgiving Inspiration

I have found as my children age and come into their own lives, I see less and less of them; which is the reason Thanksgiving Day is a very important day for me. I can *try* to gather all my children together, not just to see me but also to see each other. This is a time to unite a family and remind us of what we have and comfort us with great food before the long winter. There is no doubt it can be a very, very busy day and normally my Thanksgiving Day is spent in the kitchen from morning until the “Big Bird is placed on the table. I was thinking perhaps this year I would try a few different make-ahead recipes to ease the burden of all day cooking. These all sound delicious!

Mashed Potato Casserole

Serves 8-10. 10 medium-size potatoes, peeled 1 cup sour cream 1 cup cottage cheese 1 tablespoon grated onion 1/2 cup butter or margarine 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Boil the potatoes in salted water to cover until tender. Mash. While still hot, add the sour cream, cottage cheese, onion, butter or margarine, pepper and salt. Mix well. Place in a casserole. Sprinkle parmesan on top. Bake in a 325 degree oven for 30 minutes.

Green Bean Casserole

It does not get any easier than this! 1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup 2 cans green beans drained or use fresh cut 2/3 cup original French Fried Onions In oven-safe casserole dish, combine ingredients except for French Fried Onions. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Top with 2/3 cup French Fried Onions. Bake 5 minutes more.

AND FOR DESSERT!

Easy Chocolate Mousse

Yield: Serves 6 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips 2 large eggs 3 tablespoons instant coffee (powder or granules) 2 tablespoons boiling water 2 tablespoons rum or brandy (or 2 teaspoons mint or rum flavouring) 3/4 cup scalded milk Put all ingredients in blender in the order given. Blend at high speed for 2 minutes. Pour into 6 individual dessert dishes and chill at least 3 hours. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

Cheese Ball

Yield: Makes 1 large ball or 2 small ones 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 8 ounces shredded cheddar cheese 1 teaspoon lemon juice 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon finely minced pimiento 1 tablespoon grated onion 1 tablespoon minced green pepper Grated walnuts Combine all but last ingredient and put into freezer for 20 minutes. Remove, shape into a ball, and roll in grated walnuts. Wrap in plastic wrap and put in refrigerator until ready to use. Page 26

Flames Ignited!

For the first time in four years, I am actually excited about a Calgary Flames season! No, the Flames are not a Stanley Cup contender; heck, they are not even a playoff team but for the first time in a long time there is hope. There is a plan in place to draft, develop and rebuild a solid foundation that is the core to any championship caliber organization. As solid hockey minds acknowledge, Darryl Sutter’s vision and plan to trade away first and second round draft picks for aging veterans has set the re-building plan back a few years. However, it was clearly evident at this year’s training camp; the organization has started to re-stock the shelves. The future clearly looks bright thanks to the skill level and poise of Sean Monahan, Morgan Klimchuk, Emile Poirier, Marcus Granlund, Patrick Sieloff and Tyler Wotherspoon. Flames fans didn’t even get to see the likes of NCAA stars Mark Jankowski, John Gaudeau and goaltender Jon Gillies. The Calgary Flames have proven it’s not hard to shed payroll and get out of “cap jail” as general manager Jay Feaster has spoken about so often. What is difficult is to rebuild an organization that allowed the cupboards to get bare! “You can’t put a time frame on it,” stated Brian Burke as he was introduced as the newly appointed director of hockey operations last month. Burke is well aware from his time in Toronto that there will be some mistakes along the way, but the key is to minimize those mistakes and stay the course. Feaster’s ill-advised quote “the mandate from our owner is to make the playoffs” - is now in the rear view mirror. With the additions of TJ Galaradi, David Jones, Shane O’Brien and a healthy Lance Bouma, the Flames will be a tougher team to play against this season. They may not score a lot of goals and they may not win a lot of games, but the opposition will know they have been in a battle. Here are my top five story lines heading into a brand new Calgary Flames season:

player who didn’t like playing center. He couldn’t adjust to the faster game on the smaller ice surface and he is back where he belongs in the KHL. Prediction: Ramo was an average goalie when he was in the NHL four years and he will struggle with a young team in front of him. Joey MacDonald and Ramo will split the goaltending duties most of the season. 3) Mark Giordano – can the 19th captain in Flames history provide the leadership required for a young rebuilding organization? Prediction: A definite “YES.” Giordano was an undrafted, free agent long shot by the organization. His journey to the NHL is what perseverance and dedication is all about. He has the respect of his teammate and the coaching staff and while there will be some growing pains with this young team, Gio will be a great captain for at least the next five seasons. 4) Mike Cammalleri – the most talented forward on the team should lead the team in scoring if he buys into the rebuilding plan. Cammalleri wore out his welcome in Montreal when the team was struggling and since he is on an expiring contract many believe he will be the most likely player to be moved at the NHL trading deadline. Prediction: Cammalleri will be a model citizen and player for the Flames. He will get his points on the power play and he will be traded for more prospects after the Olympic break. 5) Brian Burke – will the colourful, bombastic director of hockey operations actually stay behind the scenes? Prediction: Can a leopard change its spots? Will John Tortorella play nice with the media in Vancouver? Will the Calgary Flames win the Stanley Cup? Of course the answer is no! It may not happen right away; it may not even happen till the end of the season, but make no mistake: Brian Burke is a control freak. In my humble opinion, he doesn’t want to be behind the scenes. He wants to be a manager. Burke admitted to me at his news conference that he will take his time looking over every aspect of the hockey department and given time plans can change. I feel bad for Jay Feaster as he is a dead man walking and sooner or later, Brain Burke will take over as GM of the Calgary Flames. Enjoy the season, it will be interesting!

About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on News Talk 770 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

1) Sven Baertschi – can the 21 year old winger blossom into the star the Flames and fans envision? The Flames would love to see Baertschi become the new face of the organization, replacing Jarome Iginla. However, unlike Iginla, Baertschi is a small skilled forward and can be pushed around at the NHL level. Prediction: Baertschi will be given every opportunity with ice time in all situations. If he stays healthy, he will lead the team in scoring but it’s unlikely he plays all 82 games. 2) Kari Ramo – with the retirement of Miikka Kiprusoff, Ramo has some big pads to fill! He has been promoted and sold as the best goaltender outside of the NHL. Unfortunately, fans heard the same song last season on Roman Cervenka. Cervenka was a lazy Page 28

My Travel Plans for 2013-2014

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.

I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I am getting older.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work.

One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I am not too much on physical activity anymore.

I may have been in Continent, and don’t remember what country I was in. It’s an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.

INSPIRATION What is Inspiration?

We all want to be inspired, but what is inspiration exactly? What does inspiration mean? Inspiration means literally, to breathe in and be filled with the spirit of the gods. The gods were the muses of ancient Greece. Greek myth explained that all creativity came from the gods and that mortals (that’s us) can only receive somewhat imperfect copies of the originals. The modern meaning of inspiration is a motivating action or influence that results in creative works and productivity of all kinds. Inspiration is the source of all creativity and innovation. Fascination, quite simply, is nature’s way of getting our attention. Don’t dismiss it as trivial. Give it room. Give it time to breathe. Honour it. Follow your curiosity down the path that’s into the subject or thing that most fascinates you. Your deepest interests and even obsessions provide a clue that something significant is knocking on door of your unconscious mind. What is that new idea you cannot get out of your head? Is there some new road or fresh possibility has captured your attention? In what ways can you cultivate and enrich this inspiration today?

What Inspires you?

Inspiration is everywhere — from the words of your favourite writer to the blooms and leaves on your morning walk. You just need to open your eyes, and breathe it in. What inspires me is my children, all six of them. They are all so different and unique and they all have their own way of looking at life, often different than mine. Driving through the mountains in the fall, spending time in my garden, walking my dogs, taking pictures, walking in the forest, especially the giant cedars just outside of Revelstoke, talking to old friends, my Christmas tree, decorating my home, writing a good article, hugging my first grandchild, feeling happy with an accomplishments, yoga, watching one of my old favourite movies and realizing I am far from perfect. What inspires YOU? Take the time to think about this and you may be inspired to become a better person, change what you are doing in life, change your thinking, look on the upside, try to be happier, be more giving and loving and enjoy every moment in life. Dear Lifelines, What exactly is NLP? I’ve heard of it but don’t know exactly what it is. Curious Dear Curious, NLP is an abbreviation for Neurolinguistic Programming. It can be a very effective methodology for reaching the change you desire in life in part through modelling-or copying-others who have reached the desired goal that you currently are striving for. The methodology of NLP encompasses a lot of different areas: ‘Neuro’ refers to your neurological system or, in other words, the way you process information through your senses and body. Despite potentially having similar experiences and similar physiology, we all store our experiences differently in our bodies. Part of overcoming mental obstacles or pushing ourselves further in order to reach our goals requires us to examine exactly how we process, store and learn from our experiences and memories. In analyzing the process, NLP allows us to very deliberately replace our old beliefs, values and limitations with more useful and productive beliefs leaving us with a greater range of choices and capabilities. In essence, it’s similar to wiping clean our bodies’ old hard drives and reloading the memory with information that is current, useful and more in line with who we are and what our goals and beliefs are today.

‘Programming’ refers to how we internalize our learning and the different strategies and thinking patterns we personally use to make sense of our experiences and organize our thoughts. NLP is a combination of theories collected through the analysis of cognitive behavioural therapy, gestalt therapy and psychoanalysis. In the 1970’s NLP was derived from the study of the best techniques and strategies used by the leading therapists of the day. Today many practitioners continue to build upon the body of knowledge encompassing NLP by developing newer strategies and methods to help people in various personal circumstances reach their goals. There is no limit to how NLP can help provide a process of change for people. How Important is Gut Health to Weight Loss? A healthy gut equals a healthy body and mind. But what is a healthy gut? This includes most of your digestive system, stomach lining, adequate stomach acid, healthy colon & intestine, and a stable colony of healthy bacteria. These examples are generalized, but you get the picture. A healthy gut is more than just your stomach. When your gut is healthy, your body can extract more nutrients from the food we eat. You can use those nutrients more efficiently, and your body runs as it should. You think better, you sleep better, your body metabolizes better, you’re able to concentrate better, and have more energy. The brain’s health and function is linked to your gut health as well. A healthy gut can equal a healthy brain. This is because 90% of your neurotransmitters are made in your gut. What is a neurotransmitter? The definition is a substance that carries a signal from one cell to another. Pretty general, right? There are three neurotransmitters that most of us have heard of, like serotonin; yep, you read that right. Most of your brains serotonin is made in your stomach. We know that serotonin plays a part in learning, sleep, and mood. The next two neurotransmitters you may or may not have heard about, but they are very important as well. Acetylcholine is the most common neurotransmitter. It is linked to our attention, arousal and muscular function. Dopamine; we have all heard of this guy, but most are unsure what its function is. Dopamine is the power house of the pleasure and rewards center in your brain. It not only helps you see rewards, it pushes you towards them. Interesting fact: dopamine deficiency is linked to Parkinson’s disease. Page 34

The Newsy Neighbour

So how does any of this help you with weight loss? If your gut is healthy your systems will be running as they should. Your metabolism will be running better as you are able to absorb more nutrients. You will have better sleep, more energy, improved willpower and drive to get you to your weight loss goal. All because of neurotransmitters! All of these improvements make it easier to lose weight and make the process more enjoyable. You will also be more successful at keeping the weight off. Stress, diet, sleep, hormones, life style, food sensitivity/ allergy, antibiotics and medications can take their toll on your gut health. Take care of your gut, talk to your doctor, naturopath, pharmacist, BioSignature Practitioner or Functional Medical Practitioner if you have questions about your health. By Anndee King

Think 80/20: You can’t be 100 percent all of the time, but you can be 80 percent all of the time. Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day, aiming to make healthy choices 80 percent of the time. Listen to your body: Pushing yourself too much will only lead to a burn out, so make sure you keep up a workout routine that’s sustainable, not exhausting. If you’re trying to work out twice a day to lose weight, it’s just not effective. Your body will burn out and you’ll probably have an injury, and then you can’t work out for a week. And then you feel awful. It’s a vicious cycle.

5) Thou shall do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day; a brisk walk is fine. 6) Thou shall not eat at unplanned or unusual times, or when emotional. 7) Thou shall find a distraction when cold pizza or left over birthday cake is left unattended. 8) Thou shall not be discouraged; this takes time, and quick fixes aren’t lasting. 9) Thou shall eat regularly; starvation diets are only temporary solutions to lifelong problems. 10) Thou shall never feel alone; we’re all in this together!

Family Page: Vision Board

You may not have heard of a Vision Board, but I’m sure many of you have.

Remember making collages as a kid? Remember the way you leafed through your parents’ old magazines, cutting out your favourite images and words and painstakingly gluing them together on poster board or construction paper? It’s probably been a long time since you’ve created, or perhaps even thought about collages and what they used to mean to you. It’s also possible you think of collage-making as a strictly childhood pastime, which is a nicer way of saying that you think it’s childish. But for many people out there who embrace positive thinking and visualization, producing focused versions of collages, called vision boards, is a very important part of adulthood—more specifically, a happy and successful adulthood. The popularity of vision boards today is largely thanks to the hype surrounding The Secret, a book released in 2006 with an accompanying DVD that centres on the Law of Attraction, which is the idea that your mode of thinking, be it positive or negative, directly affects what the universe puts out there for you. In other words, if you think negatively, your life will only result in negativity. But if you put positive mental energy into the universe,

positive outcomes—getting that promotion you wanted or getting out of debt—will happen. At least that’s what The Secret’s followers and other champions of positive thinking believe. Personally, I do believe in the concept of positive thinking; hey, why not? Isn’t it better to be positive than negative? What could you possibly have to lose? This could be a very constructive and positive family event, sharing that quality time with your children, something the whole family could do together. Just imagine sitting around the kitchen table, cutting out pictures of the things you want in your life with your children. You may surprise each other by finding out what it is your children like and even surprise yourself by some of the things you may cut out. How fun could this be?! For you Internet surfers out there, if you have not joined Pinterest, I would highly recommend it. I have started my own vision board on Pinterest and it’s fun; it may not be right for your children, depending on their age, but it will give you lots of good ideas to share with your children. As The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Vision Boards explains, “[Vision boards] remind us what we should and should not be doing in order to

achieve our goals.” The images and phrases that make the board should represent the highest priorities in your life. It reinforces what you’re supposed to focus your mental energy toward in your daily life. Some maintain that being in front of the vision board for a certain amount of time every day is necessary, while others, like O Magazine columnist Martha Beck, suggest that keeping it around is actually unnecessary. She writes that the act of making it is really what keeps the goals in the subconscious. The hype of The Secret is dying down these days, but there are likely people out there still cutting out compelling pictures and writing down meaningful affirmations on poster boards. And if that gets them that much closer to their goals, more power to them. There’s no harm in creating something tangible to inspire you. And given how much you enjoyed making collages as a kid, it might even be fun. Just don’t forget to put forth effort in other ways to make what you want out of life happen. Vision boarding, should you

choose to go down that road, seems only one small part of the bigger picture. Either way, if you are a believer or not, always spending quality time with your children doing something fun is never a waste of time! ~ Kathryn Hartwell

www.newspaceconstruction.com Residential Contracting, Interior & Exterior Renovations, ROOFING Brett Presley 403-888-9931 Picking The Perfect Paint Colour I am a painting machine. I cannot walk into a room and not think about how I would change it with colour. I tend to go with darker colours as I feel they add warmth to my home. Don’t be afraid; I was the first time I picked a dark colour and when I first started painting, I felt like I had made a bad decision but I kept going – and I’m so glad I did! You will find with the darker shades you will most definitely have to do two coats, but it is so worth it. If you’re not sure where to begin with colour, experiment in a powder room or bathroom, a small hall or area between rooms, or an accent wall. If you’re doing your own painting, pick an area that’s quick to do so you can see your results sooner, and be happy with it or change it. Look at the process as an adventure. To get started, select a favourite colour drawn from artwork, a rug, dishes and an accessory or furniture piece as a main colour or accent. When selecting a colour, consider the mood of a room. In a bedroom, do you want the feeling to be restful and soothing or dramatic and intimate? Soft, cool colours and neutrals usuPage 38

ally create a quieter feeling while stronger colours are for drama. Do you want a dining area to feel sociable and stimulating or appear formal and quiet? Warmer, contrasting and somewhat brighter colours add to a sociable atmosphere; deeper blue-greens and neutrals will give a more formal ambiance. Do you want kid’s rooms to create an active and exciting energy or an orderly and restful feeling? Be careful not to over stimulate your children with intensely bright hues. You may not know it, but some brighter colours can lead to unrest and irritability. Boost your confidence by testing colours on poster board or large areas of a wall. Don’t be afraid to go beyond your comfort zone: Consider strong, vivid colours or soft, deep neutrals like chocolate brown or olive green as main or accent colours. Or add drama with a stronger colour on the ceiling. Tinted ceilings can dramatically change the whole look of a room. Just go for it! It’s fun to be a little dramatic and if you don’t like it, just paint again! Take a chance and believe in yourself; use your imagination! Kathryn Hartwell

Fall Prep Long leisurely walks through multi-coloured leaves with the crisp tang of fall air provides an exhilarating highlight to our outdoor times. Kidding, right? Some of us do have this experience in the fall, but many of us are in the scramble of shorter days and back to the grind. Volunteer organizations, school and club activities, Machiavellian machinations, yard prep work… it all adds up on the time list. Appliance failures are not wanted on our list, but with a little effort, we can reduce our problems and stress levels. Most major appliances require little maintenance and give years of relatively free performance but there are some small things we can do that can save money and energy. Important to remember: Your Use & Care Guide for your appliance is a valuable resource for use and maintenance tips. Whenever near any electrical or moving Page 40

parts – unplug the appliance first and never leave parts removed/not replaced properly! They were put there for a reason. 1) Check your fridge condenser, (usually a set of thin black tubes under or at the lower back of the fridge) for being blocked by dust, hair, etc. The fridge gets rid of heat through the condenser and cannot properly cool if it is blocked. 2) Check your fridge door seals for small gaps. Letting warm air in (cold air out) through seal gaps can cause excessive run time and poor performance. Plus it is expensive to use your fridge to cool your house… 3) Your dryer uses energy to take warm air from your house and put it (along with lint and moisture) outside. In the process, it also happens to dry your clothes. Anything that interferes with this makes your dryer run longer and less efficient, i.e.: venting. In addition to being a fire hazard, blocked venting reduces

the amount of air a dryer can exhaust and results in long run times. For safety reasons dryers should not be vented inside – never vent a gas dryer inside. After each load, remove, check for holes and clean your lint screen. Do not run a dryer without a lint screen. 4) Self-clean your oven if required. Do not wait until three days before Thanksgiving. Self-cleaning generates a lot of heat and if anything is going to go wrong it seems to be after a self clean just before a holiday. 5) Check your washing machine hoses. Look for worn spots or bulges. It is suggested regular hoses be replaced every five years. Make sure your drain is flowing freely with good water output. For HE washers this is a good time to clean them – wipe the door seal (bellows) and use a cleaner designed for HE washers. There are various small things that can be done to improve or maintain your appliances efficiency and operation. Check with your Use and Care Guide or if www.thenewsyneighbour.com

While a gutter is very useful in directing rain water away from the house, it can accumulate dry leaves and other debris, causing it to clog. When there is too much debris in the gutter it traps water causing the gutter to rust and break away. Additionally, if the water does not drain from the gutter it can lead to ice damming and damage, forcing you to replace the gutter. Many small animals and insects can also decide to build nests and homes among the debris accumulated in the gutter as well. As with other home maintenance tasks, the timing of cleaning the gutters can help prolong its life and minimize other damage. The gutters should be cleaned twice a year, at the beginning of fall and at the beginning of spring.

Taking a DIY approach will save you on labour costs. If you’re feeling handy, here are some doable fix-ups: • Consider either refinishing existing cabinet doors with paint, stain, or laminate; or reface them, which means putting new doors on existing kitchen boxes. Painting cabinets, replacing sink fixtures and installing new lighting are all easy ways to update a bathroom or kitchen. • Replace wood knobs with modern stainless ones, or swap cold metal ones for antique coloured glass knobs. • Paint: Is it obvious? Yes. Is it an easy solution to changing the entire look of a room in an instant? Yep, that too. Paint a whole room, add a bold accent to a wall, or do some fresh, glossy white trim for the cost of a few gallons of paint. • Countertop finishes add colour, shine and personality to a kitchen. Available in a plethora of materials and colours. • Inject character into your new basement living area by adding architectural details such as wainwww.thenewsyneighbour.com

overs eliminate the need to spend your cash; reuse and recycle while giving your space an instant makeover. Start by doing a detailed walk thru of your home search for forgotten treasures and trinkets, while observing existing pieces with new eyes. Note anything that is not in use due to repairs or refinishing needs. Another approach to keep in mind is which items may be up for complete removal or relocation. Scaling down and de-cluttering could be exactly what your space needs to show its true potential.

Instead of splurging - or completely avoiding the project altogether, try changing up your home by shopping IN your home.

Stephen Poloz isn’t worried about a housing bubble. Should you be? MICHAEL BABAD ~ The Globe and Mail

Housing market surges Canadian house prices may be seen by some as among the most inflated in the world, but observers on the home front don’t see problems on the horizon. A year ago, the housing market was suffering from new mortgage rules brought in by the government to cool things off. Now, homebuyers appear to be rushing to beat higher mortgage rates, driving up sales and prices.

comfortable kind of situation.” Canadians have a debt problem - the key measure of a consumer’s debt burden now stands at a record level - which is why Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Mr. Poloz’s predecessor Mark Carney urged households for months to put a lid on it. Which they have, to an extent, because credit growth has slowed. “What I have been suggesting, though, is that people take care to do the arithmetic,” Mr. Poloz said. ~ Article written by Michael Babad and provided by Carey Rose. See ad on the back cover.

As The Globe and Mail’s Tara Perkins reported this week, sales across the country picked up by 11.1 per cent in August from a year ago, and 2.8 per cent from July. Average home prices rose 8.1 per cent over the 12 months, while the MLS home price index climbed 2.8 per cent. The Canadian Real Estate Association also updated its forecast for 2013 sales. Some observers, such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, have ranked Canada’s housing market as among the world’s frothiest, but Canadian economists and the Bank of Canada don’t see a problem at this point. “I don’t perceive that there is a bubble in Canada’s housing market,” central bank Governor Stephen Poloz said this week. The way he sees it, The Globe and Mail’s Barrie McKenna and Brent Jang reported, markets have reacted to the changes in mortgage rules “in a way which has in effect engineered a soft landing, a much more Page 46
