Hello Back to School!!! I looked over at my son to catch his eyes rolling in the dramatic way only a teenager dealing with a clueless parent or an accomplished method actor can manage. “Mom. If I go to university or something, there’s at least another four years of back to school”

Stories, Musings, A Little Adventure And Humour Suzanne is a native Calgarian that lived in Langdon for 15 years before transplanting to Chestermere in 2013. By day she is an accountant with a frustrated creative side that occasionally escapes in form of written musings, which is far more interesting than adding stuff up for people.

“That’s not the same thing!!” I shrieked incredulously. “That’s post-secondary. You’re legal drinking age at that point!”

(Addendum to last month’s article – August, you are not my favourite, after all. One word. Smoke. Wait, two words. Monsoons (although not flood level). Then Smoke. That is all.)

L

ast year, at this time, I seem to recall having a very naggy series of conversations with my son about back to school supplies. My nagginess was inspired less by the normal mom-gene and more by the fact I was going to be out of town and, therefore, would not have time to do the annual “Night Before School” festive trip to whatever paper-selling store that was open at 9 pm. This year, the problem is resolved by the acquisition of both a vehicle and a girlfriend. Gotta love those girls that are organized!! Except my maternal nagginess remains unsatisfied this year… But this year’s return to school is a tiny bit bittersweet, in that it is the last ever return to school in my household, which I pointed out to the boy last night. “Son, I’m a bit sad this year. It’s the last ever back to school year for me,” I said. “No it isn’t.” “For the love of god son, don’t fail grade 12 just because I’m a bit melancholy!! I’m sad, but I’m not THAT sad!”

Boy, talk about unclear on the concept. There was further debate on school vs. university but the fact remains – back to school does not include heading off to college, university, a trades program or anything you do as an adult. Back to school is teachers, school buses, school supply lists and packed lunches. No beer at the end of the day for the attendee. Period. Back in the days of “mom is an important person in my life”, I made the decision to enroll my oldest, at the tender age of 4, in preschool. We toured the classroom, met the teacher and had long, careful conversations about how much fun he’d have going

Then came that fateful day. School! And the discovery that mom wasn’t staying! Tears! Wailing! Unhappiness!! The kid was pretty upset too.

to school. He was excited. I was excited. Yay school!!! Then came that fateful day. School! And the discovery that mom wasn’t staying! Tears! Wailing! Unhappiness!! The kid was pretty upset too. Preschool evolved into a stressful event that involved trying to sneak out the door without being noticed all the way down to leaving the child physically in the custody of the teacher, whose patience apparently knew no limits, while I ran for the door pretending I couldn’t hear my baby wailing at the top of his lungs. It was partly resolved by having other people drop him off throughout the year, but it was always stressful and upsetting for everyone when mom dropped him off. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

COMING SOON! Roll forward to kindergarten. We were in the process of moving to Langdon at the time but it would be about 6 weeks into the school year before we’d be out there. With the memory of the preschool trauma still firmly in my mind, there was no way I was going to start him at a school in the city, then switch him 6 weeks in, so I made the decision to drive 45 minutes to Indus every morning. This doesn’t sound like much, but my younger son had made an appearance that June, so our drive was made with a 2 month old who hated the car and his car seat. And was very vocal about his displeasure. Very, very vocal. The first week consisted of us arriving closer and closer to the bell, looking more and more frazzled (some of us, anyhow), with screaming baby in tow. The only thing I dreaded more than 45 minutes of screaming baby was dropping screaming 5 year old off at the door, but he was surprisingly compliant about going. There may be a correlation with the screaming baby issue but I liked to think it had more to do with my little boy growing up a bit over the summer. Then came that fateful day, about a week in, when we came skidding into the parking lot. The playground was empty – we were clearly late – and there wasn’t a parking spot in sight. I was trying to decide if I could get away with some serious double parking long enough to run my son to the door (surely every parent in the world would take pity on the mom with the screaming banshee in the baby carrier) when I heard those magical words everyone mom wants to hear, but dreads all the same: “Mom. You don’t have to come in with me. I’m old enough to get to the door on my own.” This year the screaming baby will drive himself to school and enter the doors on his own for the start of his last year. I wonder if I can come with him to make sure he gets there okay…

I have got to tell you I sometimes have my struggles with writing the Editor’s note, but this month I am speechless! This Issue is a movie star!! You know how people say, “you live all the way out in Strathmore, Langdon or Chestermere?” They feel sad for us because we are not in the “city” (thank-goodness for us). Well let me tell you, we have the best life because we have SO much to do “out here in the Country,” on top of the peace and quiet and MUCH less traffic. I almost don’t want to let the secret out but, this is where you want to live! And, not just all the incredible, wonderful “country” things to do in this Issue, but pretty much everything else you could possibly imagine are within these pages. We have been blessed with the most incredible advertisers! Most of the builders and Realtors in this issue, have been with us from the very beginning and they all know “the country” is the best place to be. We are so proud to be a part of these wonderful communities. I’m going to leave you with… I’m so sorry September is coming and summer is just about over, but this super, duper September Issue will make you feel grateful to be living where you are living, and will hopefully soften the blow of summers end. Remember every single day is a gift. Kathryn, Aleesha and Denise We want to welcome a new designer to the team. Lisa Grimes from Grimes Graphics helped with the creative this month. THANK YOU Lisa, and welcome to The Newsy Neighbour!

Support Our Advertisers!

We at The Newsy Neighbour Magazine are constantly humbled by the success of our “little” magazine, and this magazine would not exist without our advertisers.

READERS: Please tell the businesses where you saw their ad.

This is important! BUSINESSES: Please ask new clients where they heard about you. This is even MORE important! I just want to take this moment to thank you and the Newsy Neighbor. I have been advertising with you for quite awhile now and I just want to say that your publication has improved my client base tremendously. I am getting clients from all over and it is great. Again a BIG thank you. ~Patricia Brulotte, Brulotte Bookkeeping & Tax Services

“Before you can live, a part of you has to die. You have to let go of what could have been, how you should have acted and what you wish you would have said differently. You have to accept that you can’t change past experiences, opinions of others at that moment in time or outcomes from their choices or yours. When you finally recognize that truth, then you will understand the true meaning of forgiveness of yourself and others. From this point you will finally be free.” ~ Shannon L. Alder

A wealthy man was having an affair with an Italian woman for a few years. One night, during one of their rendezvous, she confided in him that she was pregnant. Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he told her he would pay her a large sum of money if she would go to Italy to have the child. If she stayed in Italy, he would also provide child support until the child turned 18. She agreed, but wondered how he would know when the baby was born. To keep it discrete, he told her to mail him a postcard, and write “Spaghetti” on the back. He would then arrange for child support. One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife. “Honey,” she said, “you received a very strange postcard today.” “Oh, just give it to me and I’ll explain it later,” he said. The wife handed the card over and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and fainted. On the card was written “Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti. Two with meatballs, one without.”

And the city slickers said, “but there’s nothing to do in small towns.” To them we say, “bahumbug!”

Strathmore, a southern Albertan town born back in 1883, has grown from a local Canadian Pacific Railway hamlet into a booming metropolis with over 12,000 residents. “What has that got to do with me?” You ask. Well, aside from the beautiful agriculture that surrounds the area, the scenic paths and walkways and a cozy local pub or two, this town is often overlooked by passerby’s. Fortunately, thanks to our readers and friends, we were able to create an in-depth list of all the fun and fabulous funtivities within the area for you and your family to enjoy.

WATER POLO

Strathmore Waves Water Polo Club is hitting the pool for the 2015/2016 season, and if you are 8-16 years old, you are invited to join us! Krista and Kevin Hill successfully introduced the sport of water polo to the community in the spring of 2015 with Water Polo 101, an 8 week introductory program coached by NCAA players from two California Universities and a Certified AWPA Water Polo coach. Krista and Kevin, along with the Alberta Water Polo Association (AWPA) decided to offer two free summer sessions in Strathmore as well, to continue to build interest in the sport. There are many reasons we decided to bring water polo to the Strathmore area: the opportunities for local youth to progress to higher levels within the sport, the international university scholarship opportunities for our local youth, the health benefits and all of the other skills it teaches. Water Polo is played all over the world and was the first team sport ever played at the Olympic Games. It is a very small sport in Canada, so there are abundant opportunities to compete regionally, provincially, nationally (Canada Cup) and internationally (Olympics, PanAm Games). The NCAA scholarship opportunities are also greater than in many sports. The health benefits for players, according to USA Water Polo, are: • Endurance: players can swim miles per game, which improves cardiovascular health and burns up to 700 calories per hour • Strength: players use all muscle groups, they strengthen and tone arm and leg muscles and increase core strength • Injury Prevention: water around the body cushions the joints and muscles, reduces strain on body, strengthens muscles around spine, protects from injury • Participation: water polo can be a lifelong sport Water polo benefits youth in many other ways as well. It teaches teamwork, coordination, speed, fundamental movement skills, agility, balance and fundamental sport skills. Water polo combines the rules of basketball, soccer and hockey with the ball handling skills of volleyball, and the techniques of wrestling and swimming. “A perfect water polo athlete can be best described as having the over-arm accuracy of a baseball pitcher, the vertical of a volleyball player, the toughness of a rugby and hockey player, the endurance of a cross-country skier and the strategy of a chess player. Of course, to find a player of this ability is difficult.” -via fywaterpolo Wheatland and Rockyview County are brimming with players with this ability. Strathmore Waves has teams for boys and girls at the following age/ability levels: 10U/12U/14U/16U. Practices are Tuesday/Friday evenings at the Strathmore Aquatic Centre. The 2015/2016 season begins September 22, 2015 and runs until May 2016. If interested, contact Krista Hill at: strathmorewaterpoloclub@gmail.com or follow us on Facebook at Strathmore Water Polo Club.

This past spring, I had the opportunity to share with my Mom the Hope Bridges Photography Tips adult workshop. Mom is a quiet person, so I was not sure how she would do but she was visiting us on the same weekend this workshop was occurring and so, because I was taking the workshop and I wanted to spend time with her, I asked her to come along. Not only did she come but she also registered and participated. And we are both so glad that she did. Mom was able to learn much about her camera. As with many senior individuals, Mom struggles with technology. But at this workshop, for the first time ever, Mom actually used her camera with some skill and understood it. Kenzie Kettenbach, the facilitator of the Photography Tips workshop, is not an expert in every camera, but she was able to give some very helpful tips on settings that are simple and helped Mom. In addition, Mom met a new friend, who we will call Joan, and was able to spend the afternoon of the workshop with her. Joan comes from Strathmore and had some experience with a camera. So, when Kenzie encouraged my Mom and Joan to partner, it was at first a bit intimidating for Mom. However, Joan was warm, fun and encouraging. She helped Mom practice what we had learned in Kinsmen Park. Soon, my Mom was laughing and enjoying the time and her camera. Joan also got to practice some of the more advanced techniques and ideas that Kenzie gave to her because of my Mom’s partnership and help. As I reflect on this experience, I realize that it was truly a joy for Mom to be there. That makes me smile. I will never forget watching my Mom transform from hesitant to relaxed that afternoon and to see her trying shots with her camera. I am so grateful for a place where it does not matter what level of experience or skill you have. Any adult can come to Hope Bridges workshops and projects and benefit. The best part was seeing my Mom connect with others and enjoy the community and friendship that Hope Bridges workshops do so well. As my Mom put it, “Joan was awesome”. If you or someone in your life would like to be a part of this adult arts community, registrations are now open for the Fall 2015 Season. There is a time for everyone – weekends, evenings, mornings and afternoons. Call 403 983 3640. For more information, go to http://www.hopebridges.ca/our-connection. You will be glad you did!

Catching up with a friend or going

om, I’m bored,” No More!

on that long awaited date at Langdon Crossing - a lovely, local watering hole.

Children, husbands, siblings, girlfriends, boyfriends, wives - we know at times they can be difficult to appease (unless we’re talking about you - you’re cool as a cucumber). With the, “Mom, I’m bored,” “Honey, let’s eat,” coffee dates and golf with the boys, we know it can be hard to find the time to keep everyone smiling. However, that’s why Mother Nature created Langdon! It’s a town with so much to offer - and most of it is within arm’s reach. Fun Fact - Langdon, a cute, cozy town just 30 kilometres from Calgary, was once known as the “good luck town,” because for 25 years (between 1883 and 1908) there was not a single death within the community.

And now, for the much-anticipated list of amazing “to-dos,” here in our small town: Baseball at the local diamonds. There is a fantastic Slo Pitch league in Langdon as well as Langdon Youth Baseball.

Playgrounds. Take your kids to one of the

many playgrounds (there are tot playgrounds as well) and then take them for frozen yogurt at My Bakery Shop. There is a do-it-yourself yogurt bar in there!

Horseshoes Anyone? Grab your horseshoes and head to Langdon Park for a friendly game at the Horseshoe pits. Grab your favourite issue of The Newsy Neighbour Magazine (this one!) and go get that decadent coffee you have been craving from Prairie Grounds Coffee House. My personal favourite was actually the Cookies & Cream hot chocolate. I can still taste it. The Skate/BMX Park

is always crawling, or should I say rolling, with kids. It is a great local hangout for all ages.

Hockey and skating.

Golf. A round of golf at Boulder Creek Golf Course.

Winter is just around the corner; don’t forget how lucky Langdon is to have a great outdoor hockey rink.

f you’re in search of the small-town feel, with a BC vacation-type atmosphere, and big city amenities, you’ll want to be in Chestermere. This place is the crème de la crème of small cities, offering everything from wakeboarding to waterfest, lakefront patios to shopping, and beauty to healthcare.

!

Just a few kilometres east of Calgary, Chestermere has become culturally and demographically diverse with new families, longstanding residents, young adults and a melting pot of belief systems holding it all together. Which, might I add, is why we are confident when we say, Chestermere has something for everyone! And here are just a few exciting things to get you started the next time you’re in search of something to do in this beautiful place,

Rabbits jump and they live for 8 years. Dogs run and they live for 15 years. Turtles do nothing and live for 150 years. Lesson learned.

Amato Gelato. I have been in here MANY times for some of their authentic Italian gelato. My personal favourite is the green tea.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS Bring Big Win To Chestermere Ball Diamond

In addition to celebrating the Blue Jays’ current success, Chestermere baseball fans will have something else to cheer about as the community is set to receive $150,000 towards rehabilitating a local ball diamond from Jays Care Foundation, the Club’s charitable arm. As the only infrastructure project in Alberta to receive funding from Jays Care Foundation this year, representatives in Chestermere are thrilled with the contribution. “We are so excited to receive this investment from Jays Care Foundation and put it to work on a truly worthwhile project like this,” said Mayor Patricia Matthews.

Chestermere Lake Middle School’s ball diamond is one of only two diamonds in Chestermere designed for younger kids (ages 4-12). Unfortunately, the field fell into disrepair over the years and little league teams began practicing at soccer fields due to unplayable conditions at the diamond. The funding from Jays Care Foundation couldn’t come at a better time to encourage the continued development of the sport in Chestermere. In a community that is continuing to grow, with nearly 30% of the population under the age of 20, this contribution will ensure that Chestermere’s youngest residents will have a safe and dependable field on which to learn the sport. ”As Canada’s team, the Blue Jays are proud to invest in projects that provide children and youth with opportunities to learn valuable life-skills on the baseball diamond,” said Robert Witch el, Executive Director, Jays Care Foundation. “We are proud that our invest-

SEPT 9th TIME 6:00-8:30 pm Chestermere Rec Centre Main Hall ment in Chestermere will give thousands of local children and youth the opportunity to be physically active and play on facilities that are safe, welcoming and of the quality the community deserves.” Work to level the field, add more shale, sod, upgrade the backstop and add more fencing has already begun and the City hopes the repairs will be complete in September. Chris Wallin, VP of Chestermere Crushers Baseball is thrilled with Jays Care Foundation’s investment in the field. “Crushers Baseball is ecstatic that there will be another suitable place for our kids to practice and play,” he said. “Our program has grown tremendously over the last 5 years but it has been a struggle to try and

accommodate all the teams with a safe place to play. Maybe one day a future Jay will have played on this diamond.” To celebrate the new field and thank the Jays for their contribution to recreation in Chestermere, a special event will be held in the spring of 2016. In 2014, Jays Care Foundation invested $3.2 million in programs and projects and has invested in the construction and/or refurbishment of 54 safe play spaces for children and youth, including 27 baseball diamonds, all across Canada.

KIKids DS

Nana Nana Boo Boo Imagine looking at the world through the eyes of a child. No, seriously - close your eyes and imagine yourself as a seven year old; the big things don’t seem so big anymore, now do they? Through the eyes of a child, the grass is always a little greener, the clouds are always shaped like dinosaur farts and $0.45 in nickels could probably buy you a mansion. Tell me you’ve never noticed a kid ripping open their thoroughly thought-out, overly priced and perfectly wrapped Christmas present, just to toss the gift aside and build themselves a crappy little cardboard fort from the wreckage. Kids just. don’t. care. They say what they mean and mean what they say; it is what it is with those little buggers, and that’s the way it should be. When they see someone different walking down the street, they notice – they may even ask questions – but they don’t pass judgement. If they miss you, they call you. If they think you’re a jerk, they tell you you’re a jerk. They bop their heads, they sing (loudly) in god-awful tones, and if they want to be your buddy, their strategic approach is, “so, um, you wanna be my friend?” They’re wedgie-pullin, nose-pickin’, not-givin’-a-hoot-what-youthink little son of a guns. And this is why kids, in this respect, are so much smarter than us adults. We should be looking up to our kids instead of telling them to pull their heads out of the clouds; we should be learning from them, the art of simplicity, honesty and non-judgement. My dare to you is, if only for one day, walk to work like your child would; smile at a stranger, jump in a puddle, look at things as though it’s the first time you’ve seen them and then, when you get home, build a cardboard fort and start saving your nickels for your next big dream. I promise you - you’ll thank the kid in you. Nicole Martin Hodgetts

Poison Dart Frog

The Poison Dart Frogs are known for their beautiful colours. The Dart Frogs are some of the most beautiful creatures you will ever see, and it’s a shame that they are so pretty. People would love to handle them, but should not without proper safety gear. Dart Frogs have poisonous skin, which can be a big risk. Their secretions are also poisonous. This is how they keep themselves from becoming prey. The Frog got its name for literal reasons. Tribes have used it to make poison darts/arrows for hundreds of years. It became a household usage, if you will, for tribes in the area. It’s unique in the fact that its skin and secretion is untouchable. However, not all poison dart frogs will kill humans with their poison. Only three are that deadly. Usually, poison dart frogs won’t kill you from a simple touch right away, but you can feel really sick. The poison will mostly cause sickness because it’s technically not going into the blood when you touch it, but it is going into the skin. Your skin acts as a filter between the poison and blood. So obviously some does get in, but not to an extreme level like with an open cut. Some with minor poison won’t kill you even if it’s shot directly into your bloodstream. But again, you will get quite sick. The Golden Dart Frog can kill with its version of poison through just about any touch. It happens to be the most poisonous Dart Frog in the world, though. It would be the one to not even bother looking at. Zoos keep these little guys in their own special cages. If animal experts won’t touch them, neither should you. The colour is beautiful, and that’s your best warning. These frogs are generally found in tropical rainforests, including in Bolivia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Suriname, French Guiana, Peru, Panama, Guyana, Nicaragua, and Hawaii (introduced).

Twas The Week Before Summer’s End

Twas the week before summer’s end and I was losing my cool! Thank goodness the boys would soon be in school. The binders were bought and the backpacks were full. My bank account - empty, their new clothes, so cool. Their lunch kits were hung by the stairs with care, Hoping the yellow bus soon would be there. Yes Momma was ready for the summer to cease, as she could really use some calm and some peace. es, in the Smith house we are prepared for the start of yet another school year and while the emotions range from ecstatic to reluctant acceptance, the summer will end, the bus will come and the family schedule will change.

conversations that didn’t involve the words epic, dude, dwerp or dope. (No Grandma, I’m not talking about marijuana). And so after having a family meeting and convincing my children, that were now almost as tall as me, that they would indeed survive without their momma at their beck and call 24/7 I made the decision to return to the work force. So time to dust off the resume and apply for those jobs. Umm… except the last employer I had was almost ten years ago and my resume was so outdated that an archaeologist was needed to read the petroglyphs (I may be exaggerating here, but you get the idea.) How do I explain what I did with my time for the past decade? Could I put diaper changer extraordinaire down as a skill? Should identifying and cleaning mystery stains be under my skills section or hobbies? And could an eight year old be a reference? No doubt about it, this was one of the hardest resume I have ever had to write. Now I write resumes for a living. I enjoy it. I love talking to parents that are ready to re-enter the paid job force after working as

And I’m sure you have all heard it before, but change is difficult. Sometimes it is downright frightening. It takes courage to go places and do things you’ve never done before. Yep, back to school is hard, and I’m not talking about for the kids. I mean you, the mommas and the poppas that have been stay-at-home parents now find yourself with hour after hour during the day child-free. Some of you may shed a tear outside your child’s classroom, others might do a happy little jig as the bus pulls away and, if you are like me, you just might pull the covers over your head and have a wee little nap as soon as the school bell rings. But before long you might find yourself longing for something else to do. I was a stay at home mom for many years, but as the boys got older I found myself bored at home. I missed the challenges and rewards of working for a pay cheque. I missed interacting daily with people not covered in peanut-butter and jam. I longed for

I have no issue admitting that the job title “Mom” is the hardest one I have. And I admit that if someone asked me what I did all day as a stay at home I might have answered “diapers, laundry, cooking, cleaning, dishes, repeat.” I realize now, thanks in part to having to list the skills I developed while working for Smith Brothers Inc. that you bet, I do bring a lot of skills to the workforce. Skills I may never have gained without having had the chance to have the best job in the world, mom. So if you are looking to re-enter the labour market, even part time, then go ahead, dust off that resume, type up that cover letter and best of luck to you; and if you find yourself stuck, not sure how to list your transferable skills, then pop by for a coffee and a visit. One Election, Please… Hold the Democracy Shaken & Stirred

On August 2nd, Stephen Harper announced what will be recorded as the longest election campaign in modern history. My understanding of democracy here in Canada is being challenged as I observe a slow death taking place, if it even exists anymore or if we are deluding ourselves. According to Brittanica.com democracy, literally, is rule by the people. The term is derived from the Greek dēmokratiā, which was coined from dēmos (“people”) and kratos (“rule”) in the middle of the 5th century BC. The Oxford English Dictionary informs us that democracy is a system of government in which all the people of a state…are involved in making decisions about its affairs, typically by voting to elect a representative to a parliament or similar assembly. Joesph Heath, a professor in the Philosophy Department and School of Public Policy at the University of Toronto, recently argued “Politicians have become so focused on getting re-elected they are undermining the whole point of the competition, which is to govern.” The democratic process was conceived for the purpose of creating and providing good government. Instead, it is now a “carefully managed competition” that is no longer about freedom or representation of the people but rather a fundraising machine enabling one individual (if one listens to media reporting) to not accept any responsibility, yet control multiple aspects of legislation, communication and interaction with the electorate. This applies not only to the latest governing party but also to its predecessors. It doesn’t look like this model is likely to change any time soon. Those competing to become Prime Minister are exercising tight

control of the all messages candidates are allowed to engage in with their constituents. This is a sign of effective marketing management. The length of the campaign leads to the wasteful spending of money at a point in history when time and energy would be better spent on many programs to truly benefit Canadians. If a party runs a full slate of candidates, their spending limit for the 2015 campaign is $54,475,840, an increase of almost 3% over 2011 limits. After the election, political parties can claim a 50% rebate, which is taken from the tax coffers. This figure does not include spending limits for individual candidates or the benefits that donors receive in tax credits. This is just a small part of the money machine subjecting us to those terrible attack ads filling media streams. It has definitely become about the money and pandering to targeted demographics. Listening to campaign commitments clearly identifies all the niche groups being appealed to for their vote. Yet when the dust settles, nothing significant is being brought forward to show the electorate improved quality or responsiveness of government to things Canadians are saying are important to them. Whether or not there is a tax on Netflix is of little significance when there is an appeal to address the concerns of the Aboriginal communities, veterans and healthcare. If anyone is listening, it doesn’t appear they are hearing what is being said, or if they are, it doesn’t matter to them. There is a circus in town. It brings a lot of noise, distraction and entertainment but aside from that, nothing much is occurring except the taking of money. Although clever, it risks undermining the purpose of electoral democracy. Why have a contest – sorry, campaign – if the people aren’t engaged and don’t bother showing up on show day? Participatory democracy provides the opportunity for citizens to clean house and perhaps change direction. But, perhaps that isn’t what is currently taking place. The current exercise is likely about getting into office and keeping the money machine running. Why bother listening to what the people are asking and saying when it doesn’t fit in with your agenda? Yet despite the efforts of some politicians, Canadians, young and old, are becoming engaged. I find it inspiring that an 81 year old woman in Winnipeg is walking the streets and knocking on doors campaigning to “Bring Back Democracy”. Perhaps democracy hasn’t died quite yet. Perhaps it won’t. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max Here’s a little fact for automotive buffs, or just to dazzle your friends.

The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Maxwell, invented and developed the first automobile air conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees. The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford’s office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees inside, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately. The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, ‘The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,’ on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed. Now old man Ford was more than just a little anti-Jewish, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg’s name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two

hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown. And so, to this day, all Ford air conditioners show -- Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max -- on the controls.

A wife comes home late one night and quietly opens the door to her bedroom. From under the blanket, she sees four legs instead of just her husband’s two. She reaches for a baseball bat and starts hitting the blanket as hard as she can. Once she’s done, she goes to the kitchen to have a drink. As she enters, she sees her husband there, reading a magazine. He says, “Hi darling, your parents have come to visit us, so I let them stay in our bedroom. Did you say hello?” A doctor tells an old couple at his office he needs to get a stool sample, a urine sample, and a blood test from the old man. Hard of hearing, the old man asks his wife what the doctor said. The wife replies, “He needs a pair of your underwear.”

PICKLED

TUTORIAL I have done a lot of pickling over the years, but never have I ever considered pickling zucchini until this year! My beautiful zucchinis exploded and what a perfect way to enjoy them all year long by pickling them!

They are easy smeezy to make, too. All you need is 12 quart-sized canning jars, 1 or 2 bay leaves, 1 or 2 cloves of fresh garlic, 1 or 2 sprigs of fresh dill and 1/8 tbsp pickling spice per jar. For your brine, you will need white vinegar, pickling salt and water.

Sanitize your jars (I use my dishwasher) and put the lids in a pot and bring to a slow boil. Put your garlic, bay leaves, dill and pickling spice in the bottom of each jar.

Grab a large pot and for 12 quart-sized jars, I used 12 cups of water, 12 cups of white vinegar and 1 ½ cups of pickling salt. Bring to a slow boil as you are slicing and stuffing the zucchini in the jars, stir and make sure all the salt has dissolved into the brine.

Pour the brine to cover the zucchini one jar at a time (I used a glass 2 cup measuring cup to pour the brine) and take a lid with tongs out of the boiling water bath and quickly tighten onto jar using a dish cloth and dish towel to tighten, then place upside down on a towel over night.

You will hear the lids pop – pop – pop as they seal. Presto!! Just like magic. Did I not tell you this was easy squeazy? And the best part of this process is that you can use it for carrots, beans, cucumbers, beets; pretty much any vegetable you can think of, you can pickle!!!

It’s quick, easy and FUN and you can eat your own pickled vegetables all year long (with no preservatives) – and how great are these for gift giving?!

May something wonderful happen for you today! Kathryn Hartwell 36 •

8 Crazy Things That Happen When You Google We Tried Them All! They Work!

Type “Fluffiest Kitten in the Whole Wide World” Photo Credit: antb / Shutterstock.com

1) Type “Do a Barrel Roll!”

least on the Google homepage? Type in funnygoogle and click the first result. You are taken to a new homepage, where you are then prompted to enter your name. Click save and voila! The Google logo is now replaced with YOUR name!

2) Type “Google” Backwards

6) Type in different “languages” like Pig-Latin

Want to add a little bit of “wake up” to your morning? Type “do a barrel roll” into the Googlesearch bar, hit return, and the webpage suddenly does a 360.

Here’s kind of a surreal one. Someone at Google must have gone “through the looking glass” when they created this alternate website. Basically, it’s all the goodness of Google… if you were looking at it in a mirror! To get there, type: elgoog.im in your browser url window (“I’m Google”, spelled backwards) and suddenly things get egnarts.

elgooG

The term “Zerg Rush” comes from an old online game called Starcraft, where the Zerg race is known for its ability to overwhelm, or “rush,” their opponents for a quick victory. When you type in the above phrase, what looks like a normal results page appears; however, seconds later, the screen is bombarded by falling Google-coloured “o”s. It becomes a mini game, where you must click the “o”s and destroy them before they eliminate the entire page. Although you can’t technically win, you can share your scores with others.

4) Type “Google Doodles”

Google’s “Doodles” are clever or interesting tributes to people or events in history that regularly replace the traditional Google Icon on the homepage. It began as a subtle homage to Burning Man in 1998, but quickly became very popular. There is even a special committee now within Google to decide upon the next Doodle, and a separate set of illustrators and developers to create it. Different Google Doodles have appeared on the various Google homepages around the world. Now there’s a special search engine to explore the 1000+ Doodles. Type “google doodles” in the Google bar to get there. Popular ones include the guitar doodle for Les Paul’s 96th birthday that actually works, as well as the 30th Anniversary of the classic game of Pac Man!

5) Type in “funnygoogle”

Are you a narcissist? Do you like to see your name in lights – or at thenewsyneighbour.com

Others, such as Klingon and Elmer Fudd, can also be accessed in a similar way: (xx-klingon, xx-elmer). Enjoyay ourselfyay!

7) Type “anagram” or “recursion”

3) Type “Zerg Rush”

38 •

Of course you can search in many different languages in Google, but did you know you could do it in made-up ones like Pig Latin? That’s right, Google has a page for you: https://www. google.com/intl/xx-piglatin.

For those that like their humour dry, Google has a few jokes worked into its search routine. If you type anagram (a word or words that are made of the same letters of another word) you get the snarky suggestion: do you mean nag a ram? Get it – it’s an anagram! On the super-geeky end, if you type in the word “recursion,” Google snaps back: do you mean recursion? It’s not funny if I have to explain it… (BONUS) HHG2TG fans: ask Google what is the answer to life, the universe, and everything?

8) Ok Cat Lovers Type “Fluffiest Kitten in the Whole Wide World” - You can’t have a list of things to do with Google without cats. Quite simply, this kitten is either a GENIUS at SEO, or is just that darn cute!! Cuddle alert!!!

Hats off to Calgary Flames General Manager Brad Treliving and his staff for an amazing off season! Talk about setting a tone for the upcoming 2015 - 2016 NHL season, as training camps open this month. With the addition of Dougie Hamilton, Michael Frolik and the recent signing of Captain Mark Giordano, the organization has set themselves up to be the team to watch when the new season starts in October.

TS

SPOR

“We definitely feel we are a better team than we were last year,” smiled Treliving after the Giordano signing. “We know how tough the western conference is going to be but we feel confident about our team and our chances. With Giordano, Hamilton, TJ Brodie, Dennis Wideman, Kris Russell and Deryk Engelland, the Flames now have one of the deepest and feared defensive units in the National Hockey League.

FLAMING

It’s hard to believe the odds makers at Bodog.ca have the Flames as a 30 to 1 long shot to win the Stanley Cup. Believe it or not, those are the same odds for the Edmonton Oilers.

Hot Summer!

Calgary Next? It’s tough to argue with the vision, but there are a lot of questions surrounding the 3 in 1 building concept Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation floated for the revitalization of Calgary’s West End. I did have a chuckle when one of Forbes valued my radio listeners asked, “Why did they call it Calgary Next?” Because the Edmonton was first! Ouch! Obviously, I am a little biased because I believe the city does desperately need a field house and a new football stadium.

WILL THERE BE A CALGARY NEXT? Photo credits: Richard Cavalleri / Shutterstock.com

0-8?? thenewsyneighbour.com

I do admit the funding model is a little flawed, and the Flames owners should step up with a bigger financial commitment. In 2014, Forbes valued the Calgary Flames franchise at 451 million dollars. If this stadium project was built, the Flames and Stampeders organization would both increase in value by at least 25 to 50 percent.

As far as the proposed site with the revitalization of West Village, I hate it! Too congested, too close to the Bow River and we haven’t even touched the issue of the creosote cleanup. If there is not enough room at Stampede Park to build this project, Calgary Sports and Entertainment should suck up their pride and do a deal with the province and University of Calgary at McMahon Stadium. “We looked at that site long and hard,” said Flames president Ken King when he joined for an hour on Sportstalk on Newstalk 770.

Greg Peterson’sWild WildAdventure! Adventure! Greg Peterson’s Speaking of chuckles, former Calgary Stampeder and Newstalk 770 Stampeder football analyst Greg Peterson shared this great story after the Stamps beat the Riders in Regina last month. After waiting 15 minutes for a cab to pick me up at the stadium, no cab came. I got perturbed and decided to walk back to the hotel. It is only a 20 to 25 minute walk so I thought, what the heck. If you have ever been to Mosiac Stadium, you will know that it is on the wrong side of the railroad tracks and you have to pass through a pretty rough part of town to get to downtown. I started walking across the railroad tracks in a very dark area of Regina to get to downtown. All of a sudden, I could see a car driving along the dirt road by the railroad tracks. The car drove right over to me and I could see it was full of 6 rough looking characters. As the car approached me, my heart started pounding and I started to think that walking home at this late hour, in the dark, was a stupid idea. The car drove right up to me and my heart was really racing now and I thought for sure I was going to get robbed, mugged, or hurt. The car pulled right up beside me and the guy

I just kept walking as the car drove right beside me as I walked. The driver pulled up even closer to me, and the guy in the passenger seat again said, “Hey buddy, come here. I want to ask you something”. The car pulled right beside me so the guy in the passenger seat could reach out and grab me if he wanted to, and, yelled in my face, “Hey buddy, knock knock!” I didn’t know what to do as I really scared so I just responded, “Who’s there?” The guy in the passenger seat said, “Owen”. I responded, “Owen who?” He said back to me, “Owen 8”. Everyone in the car, laughed and they sped off. I walked very briskly through the rest of the bad area.

Why I

Love When Summer Comes

But Also

When It Goes!

“You have to be displaced from what’s comfortable and routine, and then you get to see things with fresh eyes, with new eyes.” ~ Amy Tan

sn’t it funny the nature of summer holidays?? By the time the end of June rolls around, 42 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

everybody, including the dog, just CANNOT wait for the end of the day-in-day-out that the school routine is. But by the end of a very short two month summer, everybody, including the dog, CANNOT wait for the regular peace of back-to-school routine. Adventures await, come the first day of summer!

Here are 3 reasons I love the freedom and excitement of summer vacation: 1) Sleeping in. I like sleep, and according to my children’s reaction to the 7am mornings for the last 10 months, so do they. Funny enough, the kids were often up earlier than I would have ever imagined (not including the teenager, who was the exact opposite – how many hours do you let them sleep without checking they are breathing?), but at the very least it sure is nice not having to light a fire under everyone to get out the door. 2) Eating outdoors. Why is it that food tastes better when roasted over a fire, or eaten while out in the fresh air? Anytime I can significantly reduce the amount of dinner dishes, I feel like I have been given a gift. 3) Fresh faces, fresh landscapes, fresh activities. I love to hang out with friends and family, to be in the great outdoors for days in a row, to explore this amaz-

ing part of the world we live in. Summer in Alberta is stunning, and I love to soak it in. Now it is September and I find myself ready to relinquish our summer schedule and return to a semblance of life as it once was. I am a firm believer that there is joy in the mundane, and sometimes it is because it is so ordinary that it is wonderful.

Life is supposed to have a bit of both adventure and routine. Here are 3 reasons I love to return to the peace of regular routine in the fall: 1) The kids go to bed at a decent hour. This has less to do with the kids getting a reasonable amount of sleep, and more to do with my husband and I having a few minutes of uninterrupted adult interaction before we are both too tired to converse intelligently. 2) Stuff will get done. As a work-at-home- mom, summer vacation means that work goes on hold. I have attempted to get work done, but constant interruptions (“I’m hungry, I’m bored, I can’t find my bed under my huge pile of laundry...”) mean a lot of hours looking like I am working, but really I am just trying to figure out where I left off. A few hours in a row to concentrate is magical! 3) There is comfort in being in our home with nowhere we are trying to be. As much as I love adventures, there is not much better than being in my home with my family, supper on the stove, and the doors shut tight against a cool evening and a game of cards to look forward to. Life is supposed to have a bit of both adventure and routine. Yoga teaches the nature of the natural world is one of polarity - that we cannot understand one without the other. Whenever you are craving excitement in living a life free of a to-do-list or the more regular schedule of a well-known routine, know that you appreciate it because you had the opportunity to experience the other. SUPPLEMENTS AND SUPERFOODS THAT Natural Options Derek Henry, B.Kin, is a highly revered holistic health coach and world renowned natural health blogger from Kelowna, BC who created Healing the Body to help people understand the fundamental principles and intimate details to exceptional health. His popular wellness guides, coaching programs, and educational courses gives people step by step solutions to achieve a healthier body and mind, while empowering them to maintain that lifestyle on their own accord. If you would like to learn more about what he can do holistically to improve your health, check out his website, www.healingthebody.ca

If you really want to appreciate your health, try losing it for a few years. There’s nothing like the pain of a debilitating disease to make you yearn the warm and fuzzy feeling of a properly functioning and healthy body. Fortunately, there have been great strides in discovering and developing powerful supplements and superfoods to help accelerate your journey to wellness, and these are the ones that saved me from a life of pain and misery.

Bee Pollen Bee pollen is often considered one of the nature’s most nutrient dense superfoods, and for good reason. Bee pollen has been cited as a rich source of highly concentrated vitamins, minerals, proteins, amino acids, hormones, enzymes, and fats. The special part about bee pollen is that the vitamins exist in perfect proportion so they work together optimally. This superfood is also rich in B-Vitamins, including B-12, which is somewhat hard to get. This is very important as the B-Vitamins are commonly known as the energy vitamins, and help combat stress as well. I used this superfood to replenish the B-Vitamins I lost due to stress, and for its other beneficial properties.

Wheatgrass If there was one superfood that I could take to regain my health or simply keep it top notch, it would be wheatgrass. Wheatgrass is highly oxygenated due to the amount of chlorophyll it contains, which is a requirement for a healthy body. It is also known to contain all the elements required by humans for optimal health, so it’s an excellent nutritional storehouse that can be fed to your body. When it comes to overcoming illness, the quality of our blood needs to be addressed. Our blood is carried through all parts of our body and is the delivery mechanism for all the nutrients that are needed by various areas in the body. Wheatgrass rebuilds the blood and helps clean it up so your tissues, muscles, and organs are receiving the best nutrition possible.

Astaxanthin

Reishi (Medicinal Mushrooms)

When you’re dealing with some form of illness or disease, there undoubtedly will be inflammation in your body. This will create moderate to severe pain, and will make each day a struggle to stay positive, mobile, and productive. Astaxanthin (pronounced as-ta-zan-thin) has been found to be one of the strongest natural anti-inflammatory supplements. Although it is not as strong as certain pharmaceuticals, it also does not have any negative side effects. Additional side benefits of this supplement is its strong antioxidant content, and being very beneficial for the eyes, brain, central nervous system, skin, immune system, and sports recovery (I experience little to no stiffness after high intensity workouts, and I attribute much of that to astaxanthin).

It can be overwhelming at times when choosing a supplement. Which one do you need, what’s the quality, and how is it going to work for you, are often questions going through your mind. Well, if you were ever to take one supplement that helps with a variety of conditions and does the “diagnosing” and repair with no knowledge required, Reishi is your herb. Reishi is a highly adaptogenic and balancing herb, which means that once you put it in your body, it looks to normalize all bodily functions, which in essence creates a healthier body.

Colloidal Silver One of the primary indicators of our health is our gastrointestiThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

SAVED MY LIFE nal system. Quite often, it is teeming with bacteria and pathogens that are creating digestive issues and all sorts of health problems. The challenge with bacteria specifically is that it is often treated in a way that it’s ALL bad, when in fact it’s not. There is good bacteria that is required in our GI system in order for us to properly function, but it all comes down to balance. Unfortunately, hospitals have become “antibiotic happy” and prescribe these medications at the expense of ALL the bacteria in your system. However, before those times, hospitals often used colloidal silver to treat bacteria, fungal, and viral infections. It can also be used as a preventative aid to help rid your body of the bacteria that is probably currently plaguing your body and causing a host of issues. When used as directed, I find it is one of the safest and most effective supplements for fighting bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. I took colloidal silver for extended periods of time (2 to 4 weeks) and it helped rid my body of several bacterial and fungal infections that were a direct impediment to me regaining my health.

Apple Cider Vinegar Apple cider vinegar is probably one of the least sexy of the superfoods, but is also critical in allowing the rest to do their job properly. Apple cider vinegar is rich in enzymes, which helps promote healthy bacteria, which in turn helps promote proper digestion. Without proper digestion, food does not get absorbed, remains in the GI tract, and eventually becomes toxic. It’s not hard to believe that digestion is extremely important. Apple cider vinegar is also very alkalizing, and is a good treatment for raising the pH levels of the body, which is paramount in good health. One of the perhaps less known benefits is its ability to rid your body of unhealthy gut biofilm. An unhealthy gut biofilm prevents absorption of nutrients, protects disease causing micro-organisms from the immune system and antibiotics and antifungals, promotes inflammation, and houses toxins like heavy metals. Apple cider vinegar helps break through this unhealthy biofilm so you can properly absorb the nutrients you are feeding the body,

and get at those disease causing microorganisms that are causing you pain and suffering. I used apple cider vinegar for these very reasons, and it made a tremendous difference in fighting candida and parasitic infections.

Coconut Kefir Coconut kefir is a little known process of taking water from young Thai coconuts and mixing it with a probiotic to create a fermented beverage that is highly beneficial for all digestive disorders and detoxifying the liver. This process literally changed everything for my gut and liver. Once I learned how to make coconut kefir (it’s incredibly easy) and consumed it every day for 1 week, I started to notice results. These results were compounded and at the end of 6 weeks I felt remarkably better. Coconut kefir is a living probiotic that helps colonize your gut with friendly bacteria that is required for optimal digestion and balancing your inner ecosystem. Once you are able to do this, your energy and vitality start to change and you begin to realize how digestion is normally at the core of any health issues.

Reduce SCHOOL Stress Another school year has just started and for some, it can be a very stressful time in their life. Stress can cause many disorders for both parents and students, such as not sleeping, headaches, muscle spasms, anxiety, depression and eating too much or not enough. Remember, stress is a choice; not a condition. We all have a choice to stay calm or to get upset about the situations we are in. When we realize that the idea of starting school is just that, we can handle it better.

• Prioritizing, maintaining your focus and delegating your time are also great ways to reduce stress before and during the school year. Find the tools and develop a schedule that will help you accomplish this. • When a stressful situation does occur at school, talk to a parent, trusted friend or guidance councillor. • To clear your mind, slowly take a deep breath in and out. Get away from the situation by going for a walk or listening to your favourite music. • Try a relaxation exercise of tightening and releasing all the large muscle groups, starting from your toes to your head, breathing deeply while doing this exercise. • Massage and self-massage can also help relax the mind, body and soul, making life feel a lot easier to handle. • A foot rub will reduce your cortisol (stress hormone) level. • A warm bath with a few drops of lavender can help the body and mind release and let go of the tension you are feeling. If you do this before bed, it will enable you to sleep better.

Here are some quick tips to help everyone reduce the anxiety of stress:

• Going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day allows the body to stay balanced and calm, which, in turn, will increase your awareness and focus.

• It is a great idea to start getting organized sooner than later; this goes for both parents and students.

Good luck in another school year and before you know it, another year will be over!

Miso Paste One of my favourite parts of going to a Japanese restaurant, besides the sushi, is starting my meal with a nice hot bowl of Miso soup.

I happened to be in the grocery store the other day and noticed a nice big container of miso paste and was overjoyed! But after buying the largest container available, I soon learned that most recipes call for a couple tablespoons, at most. I had more miso than I knew what to do with, but I refused to let it get lost in the depths of the refrigerator. Instead, I went on a mission to find ways (both obvious and totally unexpected) to incorporate miso paste into everyday meals. 5 Everyday Ways to Use Miso Paste 1. Salad Dressing - Salad has never tasted so good! Add a depth of flavour to your dressing or vinaigrette by whisking in a small spoonful of miso paste. 2. Roasted Vegetables - Give roasted vegetables an unexpected, and completely delicious twist by tossing them with some miso paste before putting them in the oven. 3. Marinade - Miso is such a great addition to marinades. You can use it with meat, fish, or vegetables, and this umami-rich paste creates a marinade that’s well seasoned, deeply flavourful and totally irresistible. 4. Miso Butter - Perhaps you’ve made compound butter using fresh herbs, or even summer berries, but have you ever tried miso compound butter? This savory-salty mix adds depth of flavour, and makes a nice topping on everything from meat and fish to vegetables. 5. Pan Sauce - A simple pan sauce has a wonderful way of making home-cooked meat feel restaurant-worthy, while being amazingly easy to make. Add even richer flavour to your next pan sauce by whisking in a small spoonful of miso paste. Miso is actually made from soy beans. Soy miso is a very good source of manganese and copper, as well as a good source of zinc (all three are important mineral antioxidants). It is also a very good source of the mineral phosphorus as well as a good source of protein and dietary fibre. In addition to these conventional nutrients, soy miso is also an important source of phytonutrient antioxidants including phenolic acids like ferulic, coumaric, syringic, vanillic, and kojic acid. and flow that is possible in every transition? Three simple ways are listed below for you:

Health & Beauty

1. It’s a Good Kind of Busy Focus on September being a “good kind of busy”. Many people say to me often, “you must be very busy”. I always respond, “Yes, I am and it’s a good kind of busy”. Try those words on for yourself; borrow them from me if you have to. Let every busy part of your day be a good kind of busy. Put on some of your favourite music during your busiest times of day and sing out loud like no one is listening.

The Beauty of the

Summer to Fall TRANSITION

2. Imperfections Truly are the Silver Lining Allow there to be many imperfections with everything you seek to be perfect. No single moment is complete without the intrinsic imperfections. Celebrate your failures, for they bring you to success. So don’t be hard on yourself; notice what you really desire and focus on that and focus on what you already have in your life. Your life is plentiful.

3. Say Yes to Less Choose simplicity. The one thing that fills most people’s happiness tanks is simplicity. We want and desire the simplest things. We want a deep connection with our family. This starts within. This starts with giving to yourself at the break of day. Do something for just you within the first 15 minutes of waking up. If this means setting your alarm just a few minutes earlier to wake before the rest of your household, then let it be. You will thank me for it.

Fall brings a beautiful time of transition. Most children transition from summer vacation to back-to-school. Parents also feel this transition, sometimes too deeply as they start to pack lunches again or, for some, see their children off to university or college. For many parents, it just feels like a hectic time and they can project this feeling onto their children. What we are actually going through is just another transition time. It does not have to be hard. It can be fun. It can be exciting. It can be easy and it can be beautiful. How do you get from feeling the craziness of it all to the ease

“I feel so guilty about leaving them!” Life Lines

This monthly column by Joanne (Jody) Brown, MSW, RSW, is designed to help you make better connections, and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. You can learn more about her practice at www. Authenticbeing.ca or contact her at 403-983-2230 or NLP4you@ shaw. ca to book a free 30 minute consultation today.

Dear Lifelines, My children are heading back to school and I think I am more nervous than they are! What can I do – there is always a big cry at the playground and they clutch onto me - I feel so guilty about leaving them. Signed, Guilt-ridden Dear Guilt–Ridden, Feeling guilty sounds like a pretty normal response from what you are describing – I remember those playground scenes all too well with my children. It’s not easy, but there are some steps you can take in order to help ease you into the school groove and make everyone feel more comfortable.

1. Visit the playground of the school and come back for repeat visits. 2. Familiarize your child with the inside of the school, even just to wander the halls, check out the washrooms and classrooms, if open. 3. Check out Playgroups in your area on Facebook and other media sites to see if your child can find a playmate before school. 4. Visit local parent support groups (www.5forlifeforever.com for many contacts in Strathmore and area) 5. Organize school supplies and get a backpack – attach a stuffed animal to it for comfort. 6. Review your child’s timetable and provide a visual schedule plan with photos or drawings. (google visual schedules under image for many examples) 7. Provide a routine for your child so they develop a pattern before and after school. (Every day, have your child telephone grandma/ grandpa after breakfast for a quick good morning and then head off for school; after school, go and get the mail together or walk the dog.) 8. Find out the bus stop in advance and make several walking trips to the stop with your child. Explain calmly what will happen every day without drama or emotion. 9. Give something for your child to focus on for the end of the school day (we will read together or have a freezie together after school) 10. Have your child write down their worries and then discuss them – don’t dismiss or minimize their worries. Talk about why they worry and how they feel – strategize about what might make them feel better. 11. Practice yoga, relaxation and breathing techniques with your child. Make it a daily ritual. Three slow, deep breaths can be a quick self-calming strategy. 12. Visit the school a couple of days prior to the start in order to allow your child to meet teachers. 13. Relax and model to your child how you deal with stress. “I’m feeling stressed – I think I will take 3 deep breaths.” 14. Emphasize the things your child has accomplished and send him/her to bed with positive thoughts about future experiences. 15. For that first school day, go through the same steps that you did in your practice runs – keep your “Have fun and see you soon!” brief and make a quick smiley exit. You can get emotional after you leave the playground. ;) 16. To help support your child’s resilience, check out www.springboardparenting.com, which is a free online tool that helps parents set goals and measure successes with their child. Have a great school year!! Lifelines

Need to Lose Weight? Join my Clinical Study 90 Day study

Staggered entry August 4th to September 23. I will be running three 90 Day trial groups starting after the August long weekend (August 4). All participants get free weekly body fat composition along with their weekly weight and measurements.

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) Discomfort – Dealing with Symptoms

Group 1) Ketogenic: Our ketosis program is recommended for individuals with over 50 lbs to lose in this 90 day period. Regular Phase 1 protocol plus a daily 30 minute walk or yoga. My expectations are that these folks will rip through their fat, as ketosis is the fastest way, muscle mass will be maintained but likely no gains in muscle here.

The dental system is complex, made up of bones, ligaments, muscles, joints and of course teeth. For many patients, the system works well with the various tissues and structures complementing one another and allowing an individual to move their jaws without experiencing discomfort. But in some cases, the dental system is compromised in some way, resulting in chronic or acute pain and frustration. Does Having a Bad Bite Cause TMJ Issues? There are many reasons why a patient may suffer from TMJ discomfort, including direct trauma to the joint, arthritis, joint degeneration, skeletal imbalance, clenching and grinding and joint abnormalities. Having a ‘bad bite’ can be the trigger for clenching and grinding and be a result of skeletal imbalances, issues that may exhibit through jaw pain and limitations in movement. Symptoms of TMJ Discomfort Just as the causes behind TMJ discomfort are varied, so too are the symptoms, and no two patients always present with the same set of signs and symptoms. Ranging from mild earache to debilitating migraines, signs and symptoms can also include: *Clicking and popping of jaw joint *Restricted movement and range of motion *Sore facial muscles that respond when palpated *Tight neck and shoulder muscles *Asymmetry of the face – with one side of the face being shorter *A change to the natural bite – shifting of teeth to get them together Improving Your Bite to Help Your Joints Dental treatment isn’t always the recommended course of treatment as it depends on the underlying reason for the jaw joint discomfort. A thorough examination that may involve x-rays is often the place to start, as gaining an accurate diagnosis will have a huge impact in successfully addressing joint concerns. Dental patients dealing with TMJ pain may experience relief from symptoms once bite imbalances are corrected. When upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly, there is a natural tendency for the body to make an adjustment – resulting in posturing of muscles, clenching and grinding of teeth, changing a pattern of opening and closing, all of which put tremendous strain on the jaw joint. The use of a bite splint and restorative dentistry can be a solution for controlling discomfort as it stabilizes the bite, protects teeth and helps to relax tense facial muscles. If jaw joint pain is getting you down – talk to your dentist today as help is available to deal with symptoms of TMJ discomfort. Langdon Dental. See ad on previous page.

Group 2) Alternative: formally coined ‘Athletic’. If you are looking at 20-40lbs over the 90 days. Regular Phase 1 protocol plus one fruit, one starch and one dairy. I recommend a formal workout program here that focuses on weights, cardio and flexibility. Some suggestions for at home are P90x, JNL or Rush Fit. I see the best of both worlds for this group, fat loss, leaning out, toning and possible muscle gains. Group 3) Maintenance with an edge: This is the last 10 lbs group or my clients on Maintenance that want a more structured routine and want to use IP Product as a supplement for building muscle and leaning out. I recommend switching out 8 0z of your meat on maintenance for two IP packs, or 4 oz for one pack and usual night time snack for IP treat. Maintenance clients are not as interested in weight loss but usually don't mind replacing 10 20 lbs of fat with muscle to produce a leaning physique. This group will still have the indulgence day or two with correction. All three groups will get the anti-inflammatory benefits of being on a program. Maintenance dieters that miss the high energy, beautiful skin and great sleep from Phase 1 will enjoy getting some of those old benefits back. The winner of each group will receive a gift certificate for the Keg and also be able to donate one month of IP protocol to a friend that needs it. We are looking at BFA changes only for this one. Good luck everyone! I will also be doing one, I can’t decide between 2 and 3, so I will keep you posted. Once you decide on one, you are in for the full 90 days!! Each group will receive three cheat cards to use over the course of the program. Good luck everyone!

Today was the absolute worst day ever And don’t try to convince me that There’s something good in every day Because, when you take a closer look, This world is a pretty evil place. Even if Some goodness does shine through once in a while Satisfaction and happiness don’t last. And it’s not true that It’s all in the mind and heart. Because True happiness can be obtained Only if one’s surroundings are good. It’s not true that good exists I’m sure you can agree that The reality Creates My attitude It’s all beyond my control. emissions, but now is not the time to implement increased carbon taxes that will increase the prices of everything that all Albertans use everyday. We have to ensure that any new environmental policy does not become a new equalization program for Ontario and Quebec. Cap and trade programs often serve to transfer wealth from energy producing regions of the country to energy consumers. This tactic if implemented will just damage Alberta jobs further.

Hello Chestermere, Langdon and Strathmore areas! I am thrilled to be part of the Newsy Neighbour family. While I do not have the honour of representing Strathmore residents, you are ably served by my Wildrose colleague Derek Fildebrandt. Please contact his office at: 403-934-4400 or Strathmore.brooks@assembly.ab.ca.

While we await the panel recommendations, you can be sure that the Wildrose will continue to defend Alberta’s jobs, economy and hard working families.

It Has Been A Busy Summer For Myself And My Staff

Enjoy the rest of the summer! Leela Sharon Aheer, MLA

We recently volunteered at the very successful Langdon Days. Kudos to another great effort by the Langdon Community Association. On August 21 Brian Jean, leader of the Wildrose Official Opposition, toured Chestermere and Langdon with me (and Rollie Ashdown in Langdon) in another pouring rainstorm. We met with local officials and community leaders to discuss flood damage response, needed infrastructure, and other issues. As somebody who had to commute by canoe to high school on more than one occasion due to flooding you may be assured of his sympathy and understanding of the devastation these events can cause. He will be pressing the province to act in a fair and expeditious manner to assist those affected.

Brian Jean and Leela with Chestermere Mayor Patricia Matthews, Deputy Mayor Chris Steeves, and staff

BREAKING NEWS: I would like to invite you all to the “Grand Re-Opening” Open House of our newly repaired Constituency Office on Tuesday, September 22 from 3 PM to 6:30 PM. We are located in Chestermere in the same plaza as Safeway. Check out the new “Art Wall”, meet me and my staff, and give us your take on local issues. Nobody knows better than you what your community needs! For other opportunities to meet check our Constituency Office ad elsewhere in the Newsy Neighbour.

Leela meets with community leaders in Langdon

As we go to press, we will be almost 6 months into the new government’s mandate with no budget and massive spending measures introduced with no scrutiny by your elected representatives. I will leave it to my readers to decide if this is democratic. The current government seems determined to increase spending, bureaucracy and taxes with no corresponding commitment to cutting waste and mismanagement. Ask yourself: “With oil prices collapsing and people losing their jobs, is this the time to burden industry with new taxes and regulatory burdens?” Brian Jean hit the nail on the head in Langdon when he commented that nobody will be making investments or hiring people in the current climate of uncertainty that the government has created.

Leela, Lindsey McCann (Rocky View), Chrissy Craig (LCA), Lisa Baker (LCCE), Brian Jean, Bev LaPeare (Rocky View Schools), Bob Thomson, Tanya Creamer (LCA), Debra Carrobourgh, Patty Sproule (Synergy), Rollie Ashdown (Rocky View Councillor)

And now we are getting a new panel that has been put together to make recommendations regarding climate change. We are definitely in favor of legitimate ways Albertans can reduce

Yuma

hen I dream of Mexico, I think of a beautiful turquoise ocean and palm trees swaying in the warm, tropical breeze. I can feel the hot sun on my shoulders and the soft sand between my toes. We have been to Mexico more times than I can count and have always had an extremely enjoyable vacation. But, there is more to Mexico than the incredibly beautiful coastal regions.

Los Algadones

although most people use Algodones when referring to it. It’s reported the population is around 12,000 as of the last Mexican census. Los Algodones is the northernmost town in Mexico, and at its northeastern tip is the northernmost point in Mexico, and in Latin America. Another interesting geographical distinction is that if someone were to travel in any of the four cardinal directions from anywhere in Algodones (due north, south, east or west) they would cross a U.S. Border. Situated near the borders of both southeastern California and southwestern Arizona, Los Algodones has become a popular tourist attraction in recent years due in part to inexpensive shopping and restaurants, as well as inexpensive medical care and prescription medicines. The warm, dry climate of the area attracts a number of older tourists from across the Canada and United States who settle during the winter in the nearby towns of Yuma and Winterhaven, California. Organized day trips from the Coachella Valley are popular among seniors as well.

We purchased a home in Yuma, Arizona last year and have experienced a completely different Mexico. Los Algodones, Baja California, is a small Mexican town located on the extreme northeastern tip of the municipality of Mexicali, approximately 16 km (9.9 mi) west of Yuma, Arizona. Its official name is Vicente Guerrero,

From a base in Yuma, visitors easily can head south to the bustling city of San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, or seaside resorts on the Gulf of California like El Golfo, Puerto Penasco and Rocky Point. Just an hour or so to the southwest, Mexicali, the capital of Baja, California and a cosmopolitan city that offers world-class shopping, great cuisine and one of the largest bullfighting rings in northern Mexico. I hate to admit it, but we will be looking at retirement in just a few years to come and I can hardly wait to spend the winters away! Don’t get me wrong; I love Christmas, but I will not miss the icy roads, blizzards and bone chilling 40 below weather!!

Have you ever considered taking a vacation with no driving, no hassle and no worries for 7, 10, 14 days or more?

How about a cruise? With all the cruise lines, cruise destinations and various range of price available, there is a cruise for just about everyone. We were a group of 4 from Canada. We booked a 7-day Mexican Riviera cruise. On the day of our cruise departure, we head over to the pier and upon our arrival, we were immediately struck by the awesome sight of our cruise ship. It was absolutely enormous as it sat there waiting for us. Once on, we found our beautiful stateroom with private balcony, met our room steward, and our luggage magically appeared in our cabin. It’s true that these ships remind many people of newer Las Vegas resorts. We unpacked at once and made ourselves feel at home. The first two days were sea days. We ate everything in sight, and just acted like people on vacation. The crew members are some of the friendliest and most entertaining folks I’ve ever met. The second day was nice and warm, and we lounged around the pool all day. The cruise vessel has activities for the whole family 24 hours a day. A state-of-the-art theatre for quality shows and entertainment. Different entertainment are featured in the theatre every evening. They also have a number of theme bars, lounges and a disco with live music that are open into the early morning hours. If nightlife isn’t your style, you can enjoy the onboard pool, spa, library, fitness centre, shopping and other amenities. If you have children on the cruise, they have play areas and programs. All meals are “gourmet meals”, and combined with impeccable service. We were so impressed! Cruises typically stop at a different port of call each day or every other day, depending upon distances and sailing time between points of interest. You may stay aboard the ship all day or disembark at any stop. You are free to explore each destination on your own as long as you return to the ship by the designated time. Our last day on the cruise was a sad day. We had early disembarkation due to early flights. The ship was very organized and we were able to get off the ship very quickly. All in all it was an excellent vacation! John Marie

1. Make sure you have the best credit you can. If you plan

to finance your home purchase, check your credit history, especially if you’re a first-time buyer. That way, you can correct any errors and take measures to boost your credit score. Order your free credit report in writing from Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada.

5. Think about future resale. While you may purchase your home as a long-term investment, keep in mind that you may need to sell it one day. Consider the homes resale value when you’re looking at properties

2. Meet with a lender to get pre-approved for a mortgage. Early in your search, meet with a mortgage broker or your

When we moved into our “new” old home a few years ago, I was thrilled to see Hollyhocks growing along the house in the backyard. They have always been my favourite flower and most likely because on my grandmother’s farm in Acme, she had rows upon rows of them growing in her massive garden. Every time I look at them, I think about the old farm house and barn and I get that funny feeling in my chest and memories flood back. I LOVE HOLLYHOCKS!

I took pictures of them for my office and sent some to Aleesha to share with you, including some interesting information I found about these beauties. Did you know that they are completely edible – root, leaves and blossoms? You can add them to your salads! Taken internally, Hollyhock is soothing to the gastrointestinal, re

spiratory and urinary tracts, to treat a sore throat, mouth problems and coughing. It promotes urination and soothes ulcers. Hollyhock can be used externally as a poultice for chapped skin, splinters, areas of painful inflammation and swellings. Because of the thickness of the leaves, it is most useful to lightly steam them first to make them more flexible. Apply to the area while still very warm, following with a towel for insulation then strips of cloth to hold the poultice in place. The extract of this plant is also known to hydrate the skin, lock in the moisture and keep the skin supple and soft. The non-greasy emollient is known for its softening and smoothening properties, making it a great home remedy for dry skin. The extract is also known to give the skin added pliability and elasticity, keeping it young and radiant and is beneficial for those who have dry, brittle, and/or fragile hair. It is a natural conditioning agent that captures and retains the moisture. To make a cold infusion, soak the root, flowers and/or young leaves in cold water for about 8 hours. Simply gather a handful of fresh flowers or leaves (you can use dried also) and fill the center of a square of cheesecloth. Wrap the sides up to form a crude tea bag of sorts and tie with a string. Drape the string over the edge and use the lid to hold it in place. You want to keep it submerged near the top of the water. Leave in place overnight then remove your makeshift bag, refrigerate your infusion, and use within a day or so. Do not use heat, as it will destroy the goodness. And believe it or not, you can use the flowers to naturally colour your hair! Just add a handful of the bluish purple flowers of this plant to boiling hot water. Simmer and steep the infusion for 10 minutes. Strain into a bottle after cooling. Spray on your hair and leave on for 15 minutes. Shampoo your hair and rinse off. The yellow highlights in your gray hair will get a beautiful makeover with this simple dyeing magic. You can use this as frequently as you wish to keep those yellow highlights hidden or just use it twice a week to get a rich hue, without causing any damage to your hair! It’s wonderful to know such a common and beautiful garden flower has so many uses! It seems there are so many herbs and flowers we can use for our health. Look around and find the hidden treasures in everything growing around you. A little research and a bit of experimentation and you never know what amazing thing you will find out next! How Does Your Back Office Work?

Those Scary REALTOR® Sites Today’s technology can be a real asset in your search for a new home, however in my experience it seems that many people are afraid that if they leave any information on a REALTOR’S website, that the information will be used inappropriately. While it is understandable that you might be resistant to leaving your contact information, at the same time, you may be missing out on some truly valuable resources. One of the resources offered free of charge on many REALTOR’S® websites that can be a very powerful asset in your search for a new home is the Virtual Office. You will see it listed on some websites as a VOW, Personalized MLS® Home Search, or Virtual Back Office. Many people who log into the website will browse the listings but hesitate to sign onto the service because it requires

When people begin researching to purchase a home, they immediately turn to the MLS®. What your REALTOR® offers you by allowing you to use their web server as a registered user, is the ability to search for and save properties and property details to a special repository that is dedicated and set aside for your personal use only. Secondly, you can trigger the system to send you confidential emails with any new listings that come on the market the moment they are listed on the MLS®. For example, let’s say you are searching for a home in Chestermere in a price range between $500,000 and $650,000. You require 3 bedrooms and a finished basement. From your personal virtual office, you can set this criteria and the system will automatically search for and send you a private email with any homes that come up on the MLS® system the moment they are listed. If you are looking for Real Estate updates, news or promotions from this REALTOR®, most virtual offices will provide you an option to opt-in for that information as well. The dream of the system is that you can opt-out and unsubscribe from any of the services at any time. They are fully automated services that you are in full control of.

That Scary Sign Up!

Your Virtual Back office is designed to empower you in your search for a new home. You will find a number of questions that you are asked when you first set up, and this is where most people hesitate. It is understandable that you may not want the REALTOR® to know a lot of information about you, however once you are registered in the system, should you decide to contact the REALTOR® regarding homes you would like to see, or you just have questions about a specific home, or the market in general, the information that you have provided in your sign up process helps the REALTOR® to understand where you are it in the process. It also enables the system to send you the updates that you customize for yourself once you are logged in. There is no limit to the number of homes you can save into your system, and it is the ideal venue for you to do side by side comThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Volunteering and Real Estate You might ask... What does real estate and volunteering have to do with each other? I’ll answer that in a minute. First, let me acknowledge and THANK the amazing town of Strathmore and the surrounding communities. There are several reasons why this area makes me proud to be a resident, and the active volunteerism is one BIG reason. Recently, I was wowed again; 3 times, no less!

thenewsyneighbour.com

The ladies that own and publish the Newsy Neighbour came up with an idea early this year for the “Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival”. After several months of planning and working with hundreds of people coordinating this event, downtown Strathmore businesses opened their doors to the first... and (hopefully) annual downtown OPEN HOUSE and “meet your downtown neighbour festival”. WHAT A HIT!!!! There were vendors showing off their products, face painting, a dunk booth (thank you Donna Bissett for being the fearless volunteer getting dunked over and over and over), there was a bouncy castle, food, food, and more food, live music, free popcorn, ice cream, burgers, balloon animals, a ‘run a mile in her shoes’ race (thank you to the Standard One Stop Shoe Shop!), mural painting (Pranava Yoga), a Remax tent, cookie decorating (Kim’s Café), beer gardens, a wishing tree, the nutty professor... and so much more. This event would have never happened, if the Newsy Girls hadn’t rallied the volunteers, business owners and the Town of Strathmore. I know that we at Remax REPS had a great time giving out free popcorn and seeing all the town folk. A fun and successful day was had by all. Another team of Volunteers that we REPs would like to recognize is the Strathmore Lions. A dedicated group of individuals who quietly go about volunteering for big and small events all over our area. This group has been going strong for over 75 years in Strathmore but never looks for recognition in all the hard work they do. If you asked a Lion why they volunteer, you’d get several The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

different answers. Mostly, it’s because they are just good citizens who see a job that needs to be done and step up donating their time. And all the money they raise goes back into the community, too! The third and wildly deserving group of volunteers are ALL the people that stepped up and made Strathmore SHINE for the senior’s games in July (The 55+ Summer Games). It started with a core of people who planted the idea that Strathmore could play host to this event, thousands of hours in committee meetings, planning, raising money, organizing athletes and volunteers... All with an end result of having a premier sporting event in our community. A HUGE round of applause must go out to every single volunteer. When you see someone who was a volunteer, shake their hand and thank them! It brought us together as a community, pulling out the “red carpet” for our guests – the athletes. There are hundreds of people in this area that volunteer for several different organizations. We all have reasons why we pick the ones we do. Which brings me back to the original question: What does real estate and volunteering have to do with each other? The Real Estate REPs all volunteer for several different events and organizations every year. We are out on the road during triathlons, or handing out free popcorn to town folk at festivals and also donating time and prizes to organizations. It’s hard work, and the weather isn’t always your friend, but we love it. What a great way to get to know our communities and the people who live in them – which is what makes a great Realtor! As Realtors, we are ambassadors. We are inviting new people to live here and by volunteering our time, we can truly say that we know that we have a great community. The REPs have experienced firsthand how the community thrives thru our amazing volunteers. Bravo to all the volunteers!!! You donate your time, energy and money, not expecting any recognition but we REPs wanted to say THANK YOU!

Character

and to your home

It is so important to have a space that feels like home; a reflection of your personal taste, style and needs. Whether your home is a brand new build or an older home, there are always ways to introduce your style into the space, add character and design, and set your home apart from everyone else’s. 68 •

PERSONALITY

Soft Finishings

Drapery is an excellent way to add a burst of colour into the space, as well as patterns and texture. Drapery lends an additional layer to the space and creates an overall elegant, yet cozy feel. Installation of the drapery is also important – to enhance your ceiling height and draw the eye upwards in the space, mounting them closer to the ceiling is your best bet.

Light Fixtures

Pendant lights, flush and semi flush mounts and chandeliers are a great way to express your personality and add another dimension to your space. Whether it is a more industrial style you are trying to achieve or adding some glam to the space, lighting will do it every time. To give your fixtures more presence and provide extra character, a ceiling medallion will create this effect.

are a great way to take your home from builder basic and infuse your space full of charm and architectural detail. This also allows for multiple colour and/or wallpaper applications. Alternatively, if you are adding trim, more for texture and dimension in the space, this application can also be painted out all one colour for a more subtle look. Mix new and old – high and low – to achieve a collected and eclectic look, but ensure that your living room set (for example) isn’t the package deal matchy matchy set. This may take more time to achieve an overall look, but it is the thrill of the find in collecting pieces for your space. Always invest in large ticket items so that the quality of the investment lasts for some time. Vintage stores and refinished items are perfect add ins to enhance overall character and personal style within your home.

Mix new and old – high and low – to achieve a collected and eclectic look,

I believe your home is a work in progress and is never really complete. Mixing old with new, sparkle with rustic elements, solid new key pieces with family heirlooms is the ultimate way to create your most personal and unique space.
