inally, the berries are back! I am overjoyed to say for the first time in years our wonderful city is back doing the things we have always loved, just in time for the 90th anniversary! On behalf of the Marysville Strawberry Festival, I would like to say welcome, or welcome back. Whether you will be taking time visiting the Carnival, looking around the Market in the Park, making strides in the Berry Run, testing yourself in our Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest, or lining your chairs in the best spot to watch the Twilight Grand Parade, being able to come together as friends, family and most importantly, a community is something to cherish. The Strawberry Festival is something I,
and many others, partake in to show our community how much we are glad to call Marysville home. From the memories I have made walking the parade with my cheerleading teams, or as junior royalty in 2016, to now ending my senior year in high school as Queen I cannot say I could have wished for anything more worthwhile. My hope is that you can find a piece of happiness in ours. Marysville is a city welcoming to everyone, with beautiful people and a beautiful atmosphere. Our week of festivities are something you must come out for! I am excited to see everyone who comes to join. Don’t forget to come say hello to our royalty court! n behalf of the Maryfest Board of Directors and all our volunteers, I would like to welcome you to the 90th Annual Marysville Strawberry Festival. It was disheartening to cancel two years of festivals due to the Covid pandemic, an overabundance of precaution, and the state’s ban on large public gatherings. But we are thrilled to say that in 2022, “The Berries are Back,” and so is the Strawberry Festival. We in-
vite you to celebrate with us June 11-19. The Strawberry Festival is our beautiful city’s biggest annual event, bringing people together with a strong sense of community and pride in our hometown. All communities are striving cautiously for a muchneeded return to normalcy after the pandemic. We can think of nothing better than a time-honored traditional festival, with food, fun, live entertainment, and a grand parade to ease us back into happier times.
While our theme this year is “the berries are back,” it really means that we are back, ready to put on the best possible festival we can. The response from everyone in the community has been heartwarming and so encouraging. Our festival this year tees off with bringing back the Golf Tournament with the help of the Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce on June 11. Working with the Chamber has been a wonderful experience since See FROST on page 6

riends, neighbors and visitors, A 90th anniversary is something to celebrate! We’ll be doing it up big for our beloved Strawberry Festival. Created to celebrate Marysville’s rich agricultural heritage and our community’s most famous crop, the Marysville Strawberry Festival is one of the longest running and most popular festivals in the state. My family and thousands of others from throughout the Pacific Northwest have long kicked off the start of the summer vacation season here in Marysville in June. This year, the Strawberry Festival’s welcome return truly offers something for everyone. If you’ve never seen an Adult Trike Race, you’re in for a treat. Add a Berry Run, Golf Tournament, Fashion Show, Carnival, live music, food and craft market and more,
you’ve got a week full of fun and festive events culminating with the Twilight Grand Parade. We appreciate the volunteer Strawberry Festival leadership team and community partners who have worked hard dedicating time year-round to ensure that the berries are back! Marysville is always a friendly place. In June we open our arms a little bit wider to welcome visitors to enjoy our city’s unique combination of modern amenities and oldfashioned charm and hospitality. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident, I am delighted to welcome you to the Strawberry Festival. I wish you laughter, good times and an extra helping of strawberry shortcake. Our people were here when James Comeford established a trading post in what would later become the city of Marysville. Our people logged alongside early settlers and the berry farms; picking berries during the summers. We’re still here today, living and working alongside our neighbors to create a better future for our children in our community.
The pandemic affected all of us in different ways, we’re excited to celebrate together once again. We invite you to learn more about the first people of this area by visiting the Hibulb Cultural Center. we are both committed to promoting the City of Marysville. We are bringing back the Fashion Show and Luncheon, Adult Trike Races, Carnival and Market, Berry Run, and of course, our Twilight Grand Parade on June 18. It takes a lot of people and hours to put on a festival. I would like to personally thank our Board Members for their hard work and dedication, and to our Royalty, their families and all the many volunteers. In berry-speak, you are the cream of the crop! A very special thank you goes out to the
Tulalip Resort Casino who supported us through these past two years and with their commitment allows our festival to continue year after year. The city of Marysville is our biggest supporter in both advice and support and we could not put on this Festival without it. Q
ueen Amelia Belmont will lead the Strawberry Festival’s Royalty Court this year. The Court has gone to a couple of festivals so far this year. “So far it’s been going really amazing,” said Amelia. “The weather has been perfect at the couple of festivals we’ve been to and it’s been nice to meet all the other royalty.” She looks forward to the opportunity to meet other royalty courts across the state and see how other festivals are run this summer. Amelia said she is looking forward to the parade and the Market in the Park at the upcoming Strawberry Festival.

“Everything is going to be fun, but I think I’ll like being able to see all the people of Marysville who come down for the market with their art,” she said. Amelia is a Lakewood High school senior who also takes dental assistant classes a the Sno-Isle Tech Center. “That is a really hands-on class and we have internships in actual dental offices around the county,” she said. Next year at university she hopes to continue her education, possibly in dentistry studies, but said it may depend on what options are available to her at her university. O
ne of the Princesses for this year’s Strawberry Festival is Rachel Turral. Rachel and the Royalty have already been a part of a couple of the festivals happening around the state. “It’s been really fun so far,” she said. “I definitely enjoy the parades that we have and you get to see the whole community come out when we visit.” Throughout the summer she hopes to make new friends with all of the other Royalty members from different festivals. “I like meeting the other Royalties. They have all been very sweet,” said Rachel. Turral’s family has a long history with the Strawberry Festival.
“My sister and my mom were part of the Royalty as well and I remember when they did it and had such a fun time,” said Rachel. Rachel was able to continue that tradition by being a part of this year’s royalty. “I wanted to represent my community and meet new people,” she said. This year’s Strawberry Festival will return after a hiatus and Rachel hopes that people come out to celebrate it. “I’m mainly looking forward to the parade. We haven’t had it in two years in Marysville so I think a lot of people will come out and be a part of it this year See TURRAL on page 24

Princess Gabriella Samaniego
G
abriella Samaniego is one of this year’s Princesses with the Strawberry Festival Royalty. She has enjoyed working with the Royalty this year while they have gone to festivals in towns like Port Townsend and Wenatchee. “I think what I’ve enjoyed about being a part of the Royalty is just seeing all the places in Washington I’ve never seen before,” she said. “We get to see how all these small towns celebrate with their own traditions and festivals.” As the summer continues she hopes to continue meeting with youth from around the state. “As you get further into the parade
schedule you meet with the same Royalty again and again and get to know each other,” said Gabriella. She enjoys that she will get to be one of the faces for Marysville this year. “One of the main reasons I wanted to be a part of the Royalty is so that I could represent my community,” she said. “Strawberry Festival has always been one of my favorite times of the year and it’s cool to be a part of it this year.” Gabriella is a junior at Marysville Getchell High School. “I’m involved in my school a lot with extracurriculars,” said Gabriella, including DECA, FBLA, ASB student See SAMANIEGO on page 24

The Strawberry Festival Royalty has joined other festivals and Ziri said she enjoys the experience. “I like seeing all the kids who are just happy to see all the Princesses come out,” she said. As a member of the Junior Royalty in 2018 Ziri said that she had many good experiences and that is why she was glad to be able to rejoin the Royalty this year. ormer Junior Royalty member Ziri Morales serves as an alternate to the Strawberry Festival Royalty Court this year. This is the first year the festival has named an alternate who will fill in on the parade float if one of the other members is absent or walk beside the float if all are present. Ziri is an Arlington High School junior and Everett Community College running start student who said her time with the Royalty so far has been going well. “So far it’s been going great,” she said. “We’ve had some really long road trips but that’s good because it gives me and the other girls a lot of bonding time.”

inksmen will usher in the Marysville Strawberry Festival doing what they love — playing golf. The Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce is organizing a tournament that takes place Saturday, June 11, at Cedarcrest Golf Course located at 6810 84th St. NE, Marysville. Registration for the golf tournament closed May 11. “It was a good partnership between Maryfest and the Chamber,” said Ivonne Sepulveda, president and CEO of the Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce, of the relationship with the group that organizes the
Strawberry Festival. Golfers check-in at 7:15 a.m. with a shotgun start taking place at 8 a.m. The tournament concludes at 2 p.m. followed by a barbecue and awards ceremony. A raffle for gift baskets will take place with tickets costing $10 each or five tickets for $40. Baskets include a margarita-theme, Tulalip resort, an Everett Silvertips basket and more, Sepulveda said adding, as of press time, 18 baskets were available. In addition, anyone who shoots a hole-in-one will win a 2022 Toyota Tundra provided by sponsor Marysville Toyota, Sepulveda said. Money raised from the golf tournament will help fund Marysville Strawberry Festival community service scholarships. North County Outlook

arysville’s best and brightest fashions will be on display at the Marysville Opera House during the Strawberry Festival. The April Friesner Scholarship Fund Royalty Luncheon and Fashion Show starts at noon Tuesday, June 14. “I don’t know who else does a

fashion show and luncheon,” said Gail Frost, president of the Marysville Strawberry Festival. The show will feature fashions from Hilton and Company, Old Soul and J.C. Penney all located in Marysville. The final dress of the show will be a Quinceanera dress from Mora’s Boutique in Marysville. Proceeds from the fashion show and luncheon helps fund Royalty scholarships. The luncheon costs $40 per ticket and $230 for a table of six people. Tickets can be purchased online at www.marysvillestrawberryfest. com up to one week before the fashion show.

Carnival brings rides and games to festival Thursday-Sunday June 16-19 Marysville Middle School

he rides and games that have been a fixture at the Strawberry Festival are slated to make a return in 2022. The Funtastic Carnival is bringing a fairlike midway complete with amusement rides and games. “It’s just a fun place to go,” festival volunteer Carol Kapua, who helped organize the carnival, said. “It’s going to be something they have missed.”

fter a long absence from the Marysville Strawberry Festival, the trike races are making a return. Chocolate-Strawberry Pie
This recipe for “ChocolateStrawberry Pie” from Addie Gundry’s “NoBake Desserts” (St. Martin’s Press) can be prepared in just 15 minutes, all without turning on the oven.
Yields 1 pie 1 pint fresh strawberries, washed, trimmed and halved 1 store-bought (or homemade) chocolate cookie pie crust 2⁄3 cup sugar 1⁄4 cup cornstarch 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1⁄4 teaspoon minced crystallized ginger 1⁄8 teaspoon ground nutmeg Pinch of kosher or sea salt 6 large egg yolks 21⁄2 cups half-and-half 6 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped 1⁄2 tablespoon rum extract 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Additional strawberries for garnish (optional) 1. Place the strawberry halves in a single layer in the bottom of the pie crust. 2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, cocoa powder, ginger, nutmeg, and salt over medium heat. 3. Whisk in the egg yolks to create a thick paste. Gradually whisk in the half-and-half until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes. Bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat. 4. Add the chocolate and whisk until combined. Add the rum and vanilla extracts. Cool the mixture for 4 minutes. 5. Pour the filling over the strawberries and up to the top of the crust. Chill the pie for 2 hours or until set. 6. Garnish with additional strawberries, if desired.

The Marysville Strawberry Festival Market at Asbery Field will be held Friday, June 17 through Sunday, June 19.

A
tasty variety of foods and a wide variety of crafts will highlight the Market at Asbery Field that takes place during Strawberry Festival. “There will be various crafts and various foods,” said Veronica Hamblin, who is helping coordinate the market. The Market takes place from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, June 17, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with food available until 9 p.m. Saturday, June 18, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday, June 19. “After two years of not having our market, it’s great to do this again this year,” Hamblin said. Marysville’s Strawberry Festival in 2020 and 2021 was canceled due to COVID-19. She highlighted the food that is available at Asbery Field to provide families a place to enjoy lunch or dinner while visiting the market. The festival entertainment will feature a diversity of musical styles and most of the bands booked have at least one musician who is from Marysville. Performances take place at the Strawberry Festival Market located at Asbery Field at the corner of Fourth Street and Alder Avenue in Marysville. Rose ceremony shows community spirit Saturday, June 18 10 a.m. Totem Middle School
I
n a show of community spirit, the Royal Rosarians will bring a rose with them when they visit the Marysville Strawberry Festival. The Portland-based group will bring a rose and plant it with other roses growing in a small garden near the corner of Totem Middle School and State Avenue. The rose planting ceremony takes place at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 18, which is the same day as

the Grand Parade. “They plant roses at most of the bigger festivals,” said Jennifer Hansen, a Strawberry Festival volunteer. The Royal Rosarians are Ambassadors of Goodwill for the City of Portland and the Portland Rose Festival. Members march in parades and organize rose plantings throughout the region, according to the Royal Rosarians website. As a member of the Northwest Festival Hosting Group the Royal Rosarians participate in community festivals. Some of those festivals include the Capital Lakefair in The Rose Planting Ceremony will be held Saturday, June 18, beginning at 10 a.m. Olympia and Seattle’s Seafair.

Pro Wrestling comes to Strawberry Festival Saturday, June 18 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Asbery Field

mid the shopping and entertainment at Asbury Field during Strawberry Festival, a battle royal will take place, which is one of the matches taking place when Combat Pro Wrestling comes to the forefront. Combat Pro Wrestling will hold two events June 18 during the Market at Asbury Field. The first show begins at 1 p.m. and the second at 4 p.m. “It’s family friendly and comedy oriented,” said Scott Dutton, who helps promote Combat Pro Wrestling events. “Our guys are very well known for being goofballs.” In addition to the battle royal, where a group of wrestlers start in the ring and get eliminated when they’re tossed over the top rope, Jack the Snack, whose enemy is veggies, will also make an appearance. A cruiserweight title match is scheduled along with an intergender match and a family championship match. The show will also include a grappling

Dutton encourages spectators to stop by and say “hi” to wrestlers and have pictures taken with them. The Strawberry Festival marks the first time since before start of the pandemic that Combat Pro Wrestling organized an event. He said he is looking for venues for future matches.

Berry Run warms up parade crowd Saturday, June 18 6:30 p.m. State Avenue

rowds of paradegoers will enjoy watching a healthy kickoff before the start of the Marysville Strawberry Festival’s Twilight Grand Parade. The annual Berry Run will take place on a new route which will be on State Avenue, beginning at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, June 18, along the parade route.
“We will warm up the crowd,” Berry Run organizer Jeff Sowards said. This year’s Berry Run marks the first time participants will run on State Avenue. “Having the crowd cheer on people is going to be very exciting.” The Berry Run offers a one-mile run/walk option and a 5K run/walk option. Twilight Grand Parade returns to Marysville Saturday, June 18 7:45 p.m. State Avenue
T
he Seafair Pirates will make an appearance in Marysville during the Strawberry Festival’s Twilight Grand Parade. They are one of the projected 80 or so entries scheduled to participate in the parade, which has been canceled in recent years due to the pandemic. “People are very excited this year after two years
away,” said Jennifer Hansen, director of the Grand Parade. The parade begins at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, June 18, starting at 76th Avenue and State Avenue. The parade travels south on State Avenue toward downtown, turning east onto Third Street and finishing at Alder Avenue. She said around 60 groups have registered, but she hopes to see that number increase as the parade date nears. “People are getting their applications in.” See PARADE on page 29

Palooza’ event at the Imagine Children’s Museum in Everett. That event helps give education and supplies out to children who do not have adequate access to dental services. The Strawberry Festival will return this year for the first time in three years and Amelia said she is glad to help out in its return. “I’m really excited that the Strawberry Festival will be back this year and I hope that everyone comes out,” she said.

At school she enjoys her medical classes the most and hopes to follow in the footsteps of her sister and become a nurse. “I’ve always loved the medical field, and ever since I was a little girl I wanted to go into it,” she said. After graduation she hopes to go to Brigham Young University and possibly go into the Air Force to become a military medic. She wants to show special appreciation to her teachers who have helped in her education.

“I love all my teachers, they are all so supportive,” said Ziri. At school she enjoys volleyball, which she has been playing since she was 9 years old. She also volunteers at a local nonprofit organization, Courageous Connections, that provides equine therapy, which involves activities with horses to promote mental health. “They give classes at a barn called Alpine Ridge,” said Ziri. “I love horses and would love to own some of my own horses someday.” In the past Ziri said that she has been helped by equine therapy and hopes to share that with others in the world now by volunteering.

In addition to the Seafair Pirates, the Clan Gordon Bagpipe Band and two equestrian groups — Skagit Latin Horse Association and the Colors of Hawaii, Kay Lio Pa’u Riders — are in the parade as well as St. Bernards of the Pacific Northwest. “We have the usual great variety of cheer squads and cheer teams that will be participating,” Hansen said. Marysville Getchell and Marysville Pilchuck high schools will combine their marching bands for the Twilight Grand Parade.
Capitol Lake Fair, Royal Rosarians from Portland, Sequim Irrigation Festival, Autumn Leaf Festival from Leavenworth and the Apple Blossom Festival will also be participating. Taking place near sunset, most of the entries will be illuminated and they will be judged based on several criteria including presentation of theme, synchronization and community spirit. Hansen said the types of award categories are to be determined. In past years awards included the grand sweepstakes for business and for community group, Festival Award, the April Freisner Memorial Award, the Short-
