Shopping Local Brings Dividends Back Into Community

Hilton Pharmacy has been serving the community since 1919 and is just one of the many locally owned businesses that support our communities and are supported when we shop locally.

Money and jobs stay in the community when locals shop at local businesses. By Christopher Andersson Shopping at small local businesses has many advantages to the immediate community beyond just being able to find more obscure or unique items. The biggest, of course, is that the money remains with the community. “The benefit for the community is that when you shop local, your dollar stays local,” said Dave Koenig, community development director in

JoAnne, Kay (who’s always in the picture watching over his girls) Gloria and Tanya

Marysville. “It supports people like your neighbors who live in the community, so it makes the community stronger,” he said. That money returns to the community again more often than purchases at other businesses as well. “On average, 48 percent of each purchase from a local business is re-circulated into the local economy,” said Christopher Young, director of community and economic development in Arlington. That compares to just 14 percent of each purchase returning to the community at bigger chain stores, he added. In addition to the money that gets re-spent within the city, there’s also the funds that get taxed

and return to the local city government, which creates bigger budgets for roads, schools and other government projects, said Jesica Stickles, president of the Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce. Supporting local business means those shops are more likely to stay within the city. “When someone comes to your city to invest money into the city, you want to support them so they don’t close their doors and relocate,” said Young. Keeping those shops open allows for a greater selection of products. “I think the biggest benefit to shopping local is just helping our smaller businesses thrive and giving diversity to our shopping. We have a lot more to choose from when shopping with those businesses,” said Stacie Roark, managing director of the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce. In addition, keeping those stores going helps sustain local jobs in the community. “Marysville is known as a bedroom community, but there’s thousands of sustainable jobs here and shopping local helps keep those,” said Stickles. Young said that some people have the impression that Arlington is losing businesses, but their issue is more of a “revolving door syndrome” he said. Businesses tend to come and go from the same areas, he said. “We’ve seen some turnover, but we’ve also seen some growth,” said Roark. Young hopes that recent ‘Buy Local’ campaigns can help bring more stability with those Arlington businesses and help remind people about local businesses. Most of Marysville’s new businesses have been coming from outside. “We’re seeing expansion, we’re seeing different types of businesses wanting to be in the community and interested in expanding,” said Koenig. The last few years have been defined by fewer and larger companies, said Stickles. “I know there has been a dramatic drop in the formation of new businesses,” she said. Most younger people starting businesses have to think outside the box to create new services, which provides a lot more challenges, Stickles said. “Lots of millenials don’t have that sort of entrepreneurial spirit, because they see all these big businesses doing everything at a bigger scale fulfilling most of the services that people want,” she said.

Marysville Everett Ceramic Tile Jodi and John Hiatt, owners of Marysville Everett Ceramic Tile in downtown Marysville, know the value of community service. Past volunteers with the Marysville Strawberry Festival, the couple has donated hundreds of hours each year to help ensure the success of the city’s signature summer festival. They also gave their time to Snohomish County Law Enforcement, Pennies for Puppies, and Marysville Arts Coalition. Their dedication to the community is also evident in the customer service they provide at their retail store. Established in 1958 by John’s parents, Lillian and John Hiatt, the line of products offered at MECT has expanded over the years as materials have evolved and homeowners have sought options to traditional floor coverings, countertop materials and wall treatments. The Hiatts also offer do-ityourself help, professional installation, and design services.

Marysville Gospel Hall The Marysville Gospel Hall (formerly known as the Shoultes Gospel Hall) has been the meeting place for the church since May of 1994. For many years, dating back to the 1960s, children’s meetings were held on Friday nights, then changed to Monday nights, throughout the school year at the Hall on 136th St NE. Gospel services were held there on Sunday nights as well, telling the good news of forgiveness of sins and eternal life through the Lord Jesus Christ. The property on 136th Street was sold and our current location on the corner of 51st Avenue and 116th Street was purchased. During the construction of the new building in 1993, an arsonist set it on fire, destroying 30% of the structure. Not to be deterred, and encouraged by the community, rebuilding took place and the current structure was completed in May of 1994. In addition to serving the spiritual needs of our community, we have been able to use the Gospel Hall for physical benefit. For several years we have facilitated the donation of blood for Bloodworks NW. Lifeline Screenings has used our building for health screenings that detect health problems in early stages. Following the tragic shootings at MPHS in November of 2014, school officials used the Hall to reunite students with their loved ones. As we look to the opportunities and challenges of 2016, we continue to focus on the spiritual and physical needs that all of us face. A warm welcome awaits you!

Fanny’s Restaurant The family-owned Fanny’s Restaurant bears the name of the Shrout family’s Grandma Fanny, a mother of seven who cooked hearty meals for hungry loggers along the Mississippi River. In the 1940s and 1950s, she owned restaurants in California where her children learned about the food industry. Relocating to Darrington in the 1960s, Grandma Fanny and her family continued the tradition of cooking, serving and working together. Fanny’s daughter Pat Shrout named the Marysville restaurant in honor of her mother, and Pat’s children have continued the proud tradition of serving the community with great food, excellent service and a generous spirit. The friendly folks at Fanny’s know their success is based on the family reputation for great food, along with the relationships they continue to develop and nurture within the community. Fanny’s is open for breakfast and lunch everyday, and offers banquet facilities for large groups or meetings.

Let’s Get Acquainted with North Snohomish County 9 Leifer Manor Leifer Manor has been voted the number one best place to have a wedding in Snohomish and Island counties. The one-of-a-kind venue, once part of a thriving berry farm, operates as a covered outdoor facility from May to October for weddings, receptions and other special functions. As you approach the impressive brick home on State Avenue with its manicured lawn and marbleaccented fountain, it’s easy to see why Leifer Manor is considered one of the most beautiful outdoor settings in the northwest for those very special events. Brides come from Olympia to Canada to take advantage of the site’s amenities and the professional services offered by co-owners Donna Leifer and her daughter Melody Fitzmaurice (with Melody’s daughters also learning the business). Leifer Manor celebrates its 24th season as the premier wedding facility in the county this year. Call for an appointment to view the facility and grounds or visit our website at www.leifermanor.com.

Camp Ruff House Camp Ruff House has been serving the community since 2007 when it opened after we decided we wanted to work with dogs in a fun and exciting environment. It has become a far more rewarding experience than we ever imagined. Over the years, our clients and their pets became friends and family to us all. I never knew how important a career like this would be to the community and how much difference we make in the lives of the owners, as well as enriching the lives of their dogs. The bonds that are made here, canine and human alike, are some of the most important relationships we have ever made. We are looking forward to moving to our new location in Marysville this Spring. With a larger facility with excellent access, we are thrilled to continue to offer our excellent services to all of our clients, old and new. It is that commitment to excellence and the outstanding service that made us a winner in the 21st Annual Best of Western Washington contest.

For Jennifer Garner, owner of Spark Hot Yoga, teaching 5th grade in Marysville had been her love for the past 15 years. However, after the tragedy that occurred last year, she realized that she needed to serve the community in a new capacity. She saw how much every adult was giving themselves to the children, and she wanted to provide a place where adults could go and take care of themselves for a little bit to continue to be there for others.
