The Tulalip Tribes are federally recognized successors in interest to the Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Skykomish, and other allied tribes and bands signatory to the Treaty of Point Elliott. The Tribes maintain an aggressive environmental preservation program, both on and off of the reservation to complement the Snohomish region’s natural resources. Shopping Local Benefits Locals
Rich Senff, owner of local business Action Sports in Arlington, in front of a display of Frisbee golf discs.
Going to small businesses returns more of your money directly to the community on average. By Christopher Andersson Many officials agree that shopping local not only helps keep local businesses in local cities but circulates money throughout the community better. About three times as much money returns back to the community when spent on a local business, said Marc Hayes, the city of Arlington’s interim Community and Economic Director. “When you purchase something locally, that business owner is going to spend his money in the community,” said Hayes. Marysville’s Community Development Director Dave Koenig agreed that local businesses help keep the funds in the region. “There have been a number of studies over the
JoAnne, Kay (who’s always in the picture watching over his girls) Gloria and Tanya
years that show significant more of the sales money stays in the community,” he said. “Significantly more of your money is recirculated locally,” said Jesica Stickles, president of the Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce. “With that business purchasing from other local businesses, as well as investing more into their employees, therefore it continues to reinforce the economic vitality of the community,” she said. Small businesses tend to provide about double the support for local non-profits as well, she said. Executive director of the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce Jennifer Holocker called it “kind of a circle of community.” “Those local businesses are the ones that support your local sports teams or when anyone needs a donation,” she said. Shopping at small local businesses also helps keep them in the community. “If they weren’t here I think that would make a
lot of us unhappy,” said Holocker. “I think people take it for granted that the small businesses will always be here,” she said. “The number one reason to shop local is that’s the only way you’re going to have a sustainable community,” said Hayes. Local businesses add to the downtowns of both Marysville and Arlington and many other areas of the two cities. “Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an important part of the individual character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit as they leave a memorable impression for follow up visits,” said Stickles. Koenig also notes that small businesses can personalize their business to local’s needs, not the needs of an entire nation. “We are allowing them to select products not based on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, so we are guaranteed a wider range of product choices,” said Stickles. Hayes said that recent years have been a struggle for many small businesses, especially with larger chain stores coming to the region and online shopping taking a piece of the pie. “It’s a tough competitive market out there right now,” he said. Others are hopeful for growth, like Koenig who said that both increases in population in the area and increases in average income are improving the Marysville market for small businesses. Both local chambers are trying ideas this year to encourage more local shopping. One idea the Arlington-Smokey Chamber of Commerce is toying with is “chamber bucks” which would encourage visitors to stop by some of the local shops. The Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce is preparing a Small Business Summit this year, where they hope to highlight several businesses and organizations, and hope to focus more on their Small Business Saturday event. “We plan to grow it so that visitors that are shopping in the area, will be drawn to other stores that are also offering special deals and sales for the day,” said Stickles. More information about the two local chambers is available at their websites at arlingtonsmokeypointchamber.com and marysvilletulalipchamber.com.

Marysville Everett Ceramic Tile Jodi and John Hiatt, owners of Marysville Everett Ceramic Tile in downtown Marysville, know the value of community service. Past volunteers with the Marysville Strawberry Festival, the couple has donated hundreds of hours each year to help ensure the success of the city’s signature summer festival. They also gave their time to Snohomish County Law Enforcement, Pennies for Puppies, and Marysville Arts Coalition. Their dedication to the community is also evident in the customer service they provide at their retail store. Established in 1958 by John’s parents, Lillian and John Hiatt, the line of products offered at MECT has expanded over the years as materials have evolved and homeowners have sought options to traditional floor coverings, countertop materials and wall treatments. Fanny’s Restaurant The family-owned Fanny’s Restaurant bears the name of the Shrout family’s Grandma Fanny, a mother of seven who cooked hearty meals for hungry loggers along the Mississippi River. In the 1940s and 1950s, she owned restaurants in California where her children learned about the food industry. Relocating to Darrington in the 1960s, Grandma Fanny and her family continued the tradition of cooking, serving and working together. Fanny’s daughter Pat Shrout named the Marysville restaurant in honor of her mother, and Pat’s children have continued the proud tradition of serving the community with great food, excellent service and a generous spirit. The friendly folks at Fanny’s know their success is based on the family reputation for great food, along with the relationships they continue to develop and nurture within the community. Fanny’s is open for breakfast and lunch everyday, and offers banquet facilities for large groups or meetings.

Munros’ Driving Instruction, Inc. We’ve learned a lot in the past 25+ years and passed that wisdom on to thousands of students. Washington State has hundreds of driving schools that offer traffic safety education and we’ve seen many come and go. Munros’ Driving Instruction, Inc. is here to stay. We were established in 1990 by brothers Donald and Richard Munro. Don’s son, Mike and daughter-in-law, Veronica, are continuing his mission of providing superior traffic safety education and now offer driver’s license testing services. Munros’ Driving is a licensed, state-certified driving school under the jurisdiction of the Washington State Department of Licensing and is audited annually by the DOL, maintaining high quality standards that many schools fail to achieve. We value honesty, integrity & safety and take the business of both driver’s education and license testing very seriously. We are educators who want to ensure the safety of all individuals, both new and experienced drivers alike. With several locations throughout Skagit, Snohomish, San Juan and Island Counties, we’re here for a long time.

Leifer Manor Leifer Manor has been voted the number one best place to have a wedding in Snohomish and Island counties. The one-of-a-kind venue, once part of a thriving berry farm, operates as a covered outdoor facility from May to October for weddings, receptions and other special functions. As you approach the impressive brick home on State Avenue with its manicured lawn and marbleaccented fountain, it’s easy to see why Leifer Manor is considered one of the most beautiful outdoor settings in the northwest for those very special events. Brides come from Olympia to Canada to take advantage of the site’s amenities and the professional services offered by co-owners Donna Leifer and her daughter Melody Fitzmaurice (with Melody’s daughters also learning the business). Leifer Manor celebrates its 25th season as the premier wedding facility in the county this year. Call for an appointment to view the facility and grounds or visit our website at www.leifermanor.com.

Tacos Guaymas According to the Mexican chronicles of Ricardo Pacheco Colin, “the taco is a culture, and the ‘Taqueros’ and ‘Taquerias’ are a cosmos”, and as such they take part in this harmonious system of Mexican culinary culture in the United States. Salvador Sahagun and Lorenzo Ramos, owners and founders of this ‘Taqueria’ chain, are not an exception. In fact, Tacos Guaymas represented the challenge of creating a new concept in its commitment to taste and freshness. Nowadays, Tacos Guaymas is a synonym of success, as well as freshness and true Mexican flavor. Its ‘Taquerias’ make now twelve in Washington State, and they bring joy to the hundreds of thousands of customers in this part of the United States.

Bonefish Grill
Bonefish Grill started in Florida in 2000 and has grown to 215 restaurants across the U.S. If it sounds familiar, it’s because they opened a restaurant in south Snohomish County early on - back in 2003. Still it is relatively uncommon here, there are only five Bonefish Grills in the Northwest: the two in the county and ones in Spokane, Richland and Boise, Idaho. The restaurant brings in fresh seafood - favorites are salmon and mahi-mahi - to each of its restaurants three or four times a week. Sauces other than the lemon butter are salsa mango, pan-Asian and herb pesto. While the restaurant specializes in seafood, it also offers other entrees; the 18oz. ribeye or the cobb salad are recommended. Meals range from $15 to $25. The restaurant also has a selection of Washington wine and local beer including from Marysville’s White Wall Brewing Company. Bonefish Grill is located at 2537 172nd St. NE at The Marketplace shopping center, the new shopping center north of Costco. Other restaurants at the center include Firehouse Subs, Qdoba and HopJacks. This Bonefish Grill shares a kitchen and a set of restrooms with Outback Steakhouse, which opened in December. By sharing a kitchen space, the restaurants can move staff from one restaurant to the other depending on need. The restaurants combined employ 120 - 130 staff.
