TULALIP TRIBES BOARD OF DIRECTORS tulaliptribes-nsn.gov
The Tulalip Tribes are federally recognized successors in interest to the Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Skykomish, and other allied tribes and bands signatory to the Treaty of Point Elliott. The Tribes maintain an aggressive environmental preservation program, both on and off of the reservation to complement the Snohomish region’s natural resources. The economic development zone along the I-5 corridor provides revenue and services for the region. Tulalip provides health, human services, housing, utilities, technology services, education, recreation, entertainment, cultural, and historical activities. The Tribes have over 4,300 members, with half of the members living on the reservation. Quil Ceda Village, a consolidated borough of the Tulalip Tribes, is the second federally chartered city in the United Sates (second to Washington D.C.). Since development began nearly 20 years ago it is now home to over 150 businesses that has created more than 6,000 jobs. The Tribes contribute extensively to community non-profits, awarding $7.6 million to more than 400 charitable organizations in the fiscal year 2016. Since 1993 Tulalip has donated charitable funds exceeding $76 million dollars.

Welcome From Queen Sarah Turral generations, with my mom even being past royalty. The first parade I ever went to was as a little baby. This year I will get to dance and wave from our beautiful float. While festival events have come and gone, with new ones being envisioned and hopefully some old ones being brought back, the common thread running through our festival is community. It is a time to come together and have fun, make memories with family and friends, Memories of past Strawberry and a chance to meet new people. Festivals are many and run deep. As in the past, our festival offers My family has been enjoying the See QUEEN on page 6 festival events for the past three Hello, my name is Sarah Turral and I have the privilege of being the 2017 Marysville Strawberry Festival’s Queen. As this year’s Queen, I would like to welcome you along with my royal court, Princess Denise, and Junior Princesses Rozlynn, Jimena, and my sister Elizabeth, to the 2017 Marysville Strawberry Festival. Our festival is made possible by the hard work of volunteers and generous donations from our sponsors, whom I wish to thank.
Greetings From The Maryfest President
On behalf of the Maryfest Board of Directors and all of our volunteers, I would like to welcome you to the
Marysville Strawberry Festival. This is our 86th celebration, and we are proud to be one of the longest running festivals in Washington State. The Maryfest Board of Directors invites you to attend all of our wonderful events. The festival runs this year from June 10th through June 18th. We start off with the Berry Run followed by our Talent Show. Our Market features a range of vendors, a food court, and entertainment throughout the day. For those of you 21 and older, the Kiwanis will
be hosting a beer garden. The car show is Saturday, as well as our Twilight Parade which will be followed by a spectacular fireworks show. Be sure to go to our website, www.maryfest.org, for the dates and times. Our theme this year is “Once Upon A Berry.” We all have a favorite story as well as a story of our own. The Marysville Strawberry Festival story started back in 1932. It’s amazing to see how it has grown over the years. A few chapters in our story include the grand parade, kiddie parade and
strawberry shortcake. It’s been said that over a ton of strawberries were served at our first festival, so be sure to stop by our market and get your strawberry shortcake. Part of our story is the dedication and hard work of all our volunteers. I want to take a moment to thank each of them for their countless hours and commitment in helping to put on the festival each year. I’m not sure how many know that the planning is an all-year process. My family and I had not reSee DOTY on page 6

Mayor Nehring Welcomes Guests Dear Neighbors and Visitors, I love this time of the year in Marysville, when we come together as a community to kick off the summer season and, even more than usual, open our arms in welcome for visitors to experience the charm that is Marysville. The 86th annual Strawberry Festival pays tribute to our community’s rich agricultural heritage and
the colorful role that strawberries played for decades in Marysville’s culture and economy. Though we have fewer strawberry fields these days, our Strawberry Festival remains one of the longest ongoing festivals in the state and among the best strawberry festivals in the country. For several days in midJune, Marysville is the place to be. Thousands of families from around the region come to enjoy summer fun
events including a fun run, homegrown talent show, carnival, market and car show. An always-energetic kids’ parade precedes the grand finale, the Grand Parade on Saturday evening. I am delighted to welcome you to the Marysville Strawberry Festival. Whether you’re a long-time resident or first-time visitor, you’ll find so much to enjoy here. I hope to see you soon. Queen Sarah Turral
Sarah Turral continues a family tradition by being part of the Strawberry Festival royalty and is this year’s festival Queen. The Marysville-Pilchuck High School student has spent her entire life in Marysville. About 34 years ago her mother was also one of the festival royalty members. “My mom was past royalty and shared a lot of those memories with me and I wanted to share those memories,” said Sarah. Sarah’s mother shared stories of the festival, and how hectic those days were, and Sarah hopes to be able to pass on similar stories.
“I heard stories from the week of Strawberry Festival, and all the events going on, and that it was busy every day,” she said. As this year’s Queen, Sarah also hopes to “bring our community together.” She looks forward to “being able to be on the float, wave to everyone and represent Marysville.” Sarah is on the varsity golf and cross country teams at her school and said that golf has become her favorite sport. Princess Denise Jacobsen
Denise Jacobsen returns as a Princess on this year’s senior royalty after being part of the junior royalty six years ago. She said her experience in 2011 made her want to return to the festival. “I wanted to be a part of the Royalty because I know how good of a program it is,” she said. “I’ve seen the impact this festival can make, so I know how amazing of an opportunity this is.” She has enjoyed being part of the royalty again this year. “Not only is it an amazing scholarship, but it’s a good oppor-
tunity to be part of the community, meet new people and just be a part of something awesome,” said Denise. “They’re such awesome girls and they’re so nice. It’s like automatic friendships.” Denise is a Marysville Getchell High School International School of Communications student, but spends most of her time as a fulltime Running Start student at Everett Community College. She also helps with drama productions at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. See DENISE on page 12

Rozlynn Edwards said she wanted to try something new by being part of this year’s Strawberry Festival junior royalty. “I wanted to be a part of the royalty because I wanted to step outside my comfort zone,” she said. The scholarships awarded as part of the royalty pageant were also helpful, said Rozlynn, as one day she wants to go to MIT or Stanford.
Jimena Yanez got to see what the junior royalty was like last year while attending the festival, which inspired her to enter this year. “I got to see that it was really fun last year,” said Jimena. She likes that the festival helps her public speaking. “I wanted to get really great communication skills and be more confident speaking in front of people,” Jimena said.
Elizabeth Turral joins her mother and sister in the ranks of Strawberry Festival royalty. Her mother was a past member of the festival royalty and Elizabeth is the younger sister of this year’s Queen, Sarah Turral. “My mom was royalty,” she said. “We’ve been told how fun it was and the things that she did,” said Elizabeth. take day trips and volunteer together. They have helped serve food to less fortunate families and volunteered at the Marysville Community Food Bank. on the annual Marysville Strawberry Festival. He said McCoy’s name came up through discussions between Maryfest board members. Prior to entering a career in public service, he worked for the Tulalip Tribes. When McCoy moved to Washington state in 1994 he became the Tulalip Tribes’ Director of Economic Development. He eventually became the manager of Quil Ceda Village, which is a position he held until 2010. During his
tenure working for the Tulalip Tribes, he was part of the team that oversaw the construction of a casino, a resort casino, a major shopping destination and more. McCoy spent 20 years in the Air Force and, for a time, worked as a computer technician at the White House. As a legislator, he is busy working out a budget, which, as of press time, hasn’t been approved and the governor authorized a second, 30day special session. He also wants to continue to develop legislation concerning the Hirst Decision, which was a state Supreme Court case concerning water rights.

A fairy tale take on Strawberry Festival logo A new logo has been designed for Marysville’s most prominent festival. Marysville’s Strawberry Festival, which is a week-long festival that takes place June 10 through June 18, has a new logo that is promoting the event. The theme of this year’s festival is “Once Upon A Berry.” “It’s kind of a play on words,” said Darren Doty, president of Maryfest, the group that organizes Strawberry Festival each
year. He also designed this year’s logo. “Most people enjoy the stories and relate well to fairy tales.” The logo features an open tome surrounded by strawberries. One of the pages contains the Strawberry Festival theme while the facing page shows a fairy-tale style castle evoking imagery of the middle ages settings where so many popular stories are written. Her son owned a sales company and she would bake goodies for customers after she retired and became known for her lemon bars. She’s never been in a parade before and said she looks forward to riding down Stave Avenue. “I’d like to wave at them,” she said. Strawberry Festival float has fairy tale theme A small but committed group of volunteers has spent hours each week for several months producing a float highlighting a fairy-tale-like enjoyment of the strawberry. Thanks to their work, the 2017 Marysville Strawberry Festival float will be a sweet addition to the popular parade that takes place beginning at 7:45 p.m., Saturday, June 17, on State Avenue in downtown Marysville. The festival for 2017 is titled “Once Upon a Berry” and this year’s float provides a playful take on the lighthearted topic. It features a princess carriage, a cute castle, a tassel and, of course, strawberries The float was ready in time to participate in April’s Daffodil Festival. Volunteers, See FLOAT on page 44

along with the Strawberry Festival Royalty, ventured to Pierce County to ride in the four parades – Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting – that comprise the springtime festival. The festival is currently making its rounds on the region’s parade route. “We go all over Washington and into Canada and into Oregon,” said Darren Doty, president of Maryfest, the group that organizes Strawberry Festival. The float travels thousands of miles during the summer and fall.
The numerous parades are a time commitment for the five or six adults and the royalty that has to make each weekend trip and sometimes the royalty members visit separate parades. For Sequim’s Irrigation Festival in May, Junior Royalty members Rozlynn Edwards, Elizabeth Turral and Jimena Yanez will participate in the event. Senior Royalty consists of Queen Sarah Turral and Princess Denise Jacobsen. The Strawberry Festival float has already attended festivals in Spokane, New Westminster British Columbia and Portland’s Starlight
Festival. The festival will visit three festival parades in Seattle this summer – Seafair, Lake City and Hi-Yu. Volunteers will attend festivals weekly before finishing up their travel schedule in September when they attend the Leavenworth Leaf Festival. Strawberry Festival does receive a benefit from attending the regional parades. Thanks to an agreement with parade organizers, parade floats from each city Marysville’s float visits will send a float to participate in the Strawberry Festival parade. Volunteers did find some challenges in constructing
the current float. Namely they had trouble finding a suitable space to construct such a large item. Doty said his parents offered the space where they stored their RV. That space provided enough room to build and store the float during the year. Marysville residents will have three chances to view the Strawberry Festival float. They can attend the Strawberry Festival Parade on June 17, the Arlington Fourth of July Parade and Merrysville for the Holidays parade scheduled for Dec. 2. A wet winter isn’t dampening the spirits of the Biringer family. They are continuing their work supplying the key ingredient to Marysville’s most prominent festival of the year — the strawberry. The Biringers are continuing their decades-long relationship with the sweet berry. Even with a winter that has shattered rainfall records, strawberries should be ready as Marysville’s annual Strawberry Festival, which takes place June 10 through 18, kicks off. Marysville once was the home to thousands of acres
of strawberries, many of which were grown at three farms – Liefer, Biringer and Due’s berry farms. Liefer and Due’s farms stopped producing strawberries years ago. Since opening their first strawberry patch in 1948, the Biringer family has grown berries in three locations over the years throughout the edges of Marysville. They started on Cemetery Road, which is present-day 88th Avenue. In 1974, they moved the farm to their longtime home on Spencer See BERRIES on page 47

Island off Highway 529 between Everett and Marysville. Then about 11 years ago, they moved to their current home off Highway 531 near Arlington. In addition to strawberries, the Biringers also grow tayberries, raspberries and blueberries. Employees at Biringer Farm are busy preparing for the festival. In addition to strawberries they will have a playland area, a castle maze, slides and, of course, the trolley which will take pickers out to the fields. While the Biringers still grow berries, another prominent farm has transformed into an entirely different business. Liefer farm was at one time the largest privately owned strawberry farm in the Pacific Northwest. It is currently known as Liefer Manor, which is a popular

wedding venue in Marysville. At one time Liefer farm grew 300 acres of strawberries. Three large strawberry farms, Liefer, Biringers and Due’s berry farms were at one point located within a half-mile of each other. Some farmers estimate that strawberries were grown on 2,500 acres of land throughout Snohomish County. The last strawberries were picked at Liefer Farm in 1977. Houses were eventually constructed on most of the land where strawberries were grown. Due’s Berry Farm stopped growing fruit just a few years ago. Biringer Farm is still growing strong with 17 acres of strawberries and 17 acres of raspberries currently in the ground at their farm near Arlington. They will have a U-pick open this summer. For more information about Biringer Farm’s strawberry crop, go to www. Biringerfarm.com.
