Shopping local helps city services By Nathan Whalen While buying from businesses close to home is a boon to local employers, the sales tax dollars collected from these businesses helps pay for municipal services such as utilities, law enforcement, fire protection, parks and more. Marysville and Arlington receive a portion of the sales taxes collected from purchases made from businesses thriving within their respective city limits. Local jurisdictions receive a portion of sales taxes collected within their respective city boundaries. Those sales tax revenues account for more than a quarter of each city’s budget. Marysville is expecting to collect more than $15 million in sales tax revenues in 2018, which is a 3 percent increase over 2017. “Shop local is the number-one way you can
JoAnne, Kay (who’s always in the picture watching over his girls) Gloria and Tanya
support your local city while still getting goods or services directly for your money. You actually get more back than what you pay for,” said Jesica Stickles, President and CEO of The Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce, in an email. Sales tax collections have been bolstered in recent years thanks to the opening of several new retail establishments such as Walmart and O’Brien Honda. The addition of those new businesses prompted sales taxes to grow by more than 12 percent in 2014. The sales tax collections represent 27 percent of Marysville’s revenues. The money goes into the city’s general fund and helps fund services such as police, custody, fire, courts, planning and community development, parks and recreation along with
general city administration, said Sandy Langdon, finance director for the city of Marysville in an email. The city of Arlington in 2017 collected around $4.3 million in sales tax revenue, which was a 7 percent increase from 2016. The higher collections in 2017 was attributed to new businesses in the retail and construction industry, said Kristin Banfield, Communications Manager for the city of Arlington. Sales tax revenues represents 26 percent of all revenue the city of Arlington collects for its general fund. Without sales tax collections, many services the city provides through its general fund, especially public safety, would be severely hampered, Banfield said. Chambers of commerce in the Marysville and Arlington areas are working to promote shopping at local businesses. Both the Greater Marysville Tulalip and Stilly Valley chambers of commerce promote Small Business Saturday, which takes place in November, nestled between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In the Marysville and Tulalip areas, the chamber hands out signage and other promotional materials to highlight special sales that take place during the event. In addition, a passport game was incorporated into the 2017 Small Business Saturdays. When shoppers visited eight participating businesses, they received an entry into a drawing for prizes. The Stilly Valley Chamber of Commerce incorporated its Small Business Saturday into the always-popular Arlington Hometown Holiday celebration that starts in late November and continues into December. The Stilly Valley Chamber of Commerce is undergoing a facelift in early 2018. Formerly the Arlington Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce, the chamber board in February approved changing the organization’s name to Stilly Valley. The change was made to better reflect the organization’s representation of not only the Arlington and Smokey Point areas, but smaller surrounding communities such as Oso and Lakewood. The Stilly Valley name was chosen because the community identified with the name. Chamber officials are busy creating a new website. With the boost to public services and the efforts of businesses to serve its local residents, there’s plenty of reasons why folks should shop close to home. For information about the local chambers of commerce, go to www.stillyvalleychamber.com or www.marysvilletulalipchamber.com.

Fanny’s Restaurant The family-owned Fanny’s Restaurant bears the name of the Shrout family’s Grandma Fanny, a mother of seven who cooked hearty meals for hungry loggers along the Mississippi River. In the 1940s and 1950s, she owned restaurants in California where her children learned about the food industry. Relocating to Darrington in the 1960s, Grandma Fanny and her family continued the tradition of cooking, serving and working together. Fanny’s daughter Pat Shrout named the Marysville restaurant in honor of her mother, and Pat’s children have continued the proud tradition of serving the community with great food, excellent service and a generous spirit. The friendly folks at Fanny’s know their success is based on the family reputation for great food, along with the relationships they continue to develop and nurture within the community. Fanny’s is open for breakfast and lunch everyday, and offers banquet facilities for large groups or meetings.

Tacos Guaymas According to the Mexican chronicles of Ricardo Pacheco Colin, “the taco is a culture, and the ‘Taqueros’ and ‘Taquerias’ are a cosmos”, and as such they take part in this harmonious system of Mexican culinary culture in the United States. Salvador Sahagun and Lorenzo Ramos, owners and founders of this ‘Taqueria’ chain, are not an exception. In fact, Tacos Guaymas represented the challenge of creating a new concept in its commitment to taste and freshness. Nowadays, Tacos Guaymas is a synonym of success, as well as freshness and true Mexican flavor. Its ‘Taquerias’ make now twelve in Washington State, and they bring joy to the hundreds of thousands of customers in this part of the United States.

Immersion Escape Rooms Escape rooms have grown around the world, with several of them popping up in Seattle, Lynnwood and Everett. Many people have asked, “what is an escape room?” When you get to an escape room you are given the start of a storyline, the objective is to gather clues in the room and solve all the puzzles to complete the storyline before your time runs out. What we try to do is give everyone a complete experience if they finish or not. When solving puzzles or playing games you want to feel accomplished. We bring that to our players regardless, whether they are first timers, or avid enthusiasts. From the aesthetics, to the details and even the story, for 60 minutes you are completely immersed. Our hope is to grow Immersion into a brand of entertainment that people know and love like bowling alleys, skating rinks, movie theaters, and arcades. We opened our first room February 9th, 2018, “Escape from the Unknown”. While the first room has a suspenseful and thriller feel to it, you must conquer your own fears to be successful. Our second room is already nearing completion with a title to be announced on our social media very soon. Finally, we will open our third room in a couple of months. We will constantly be building new creative puzzles and stories for the new themed rooms. If you find yourself bored, looking for a new idea on a date, want to bond with your family, build up your teams, or just try something new that’s affordable come to Immersion.
