Shopping local helps build community By Nathan Whalen nathan@northcountyoutlook.com The simple act of shopping close to home helps the greater community. Spending your shopping dollars at local businesses helps families thrive, provides more jobs, assists nonprofit organizations and funds municipal services. “Anybody who shops in downtown is supporting a business owner who lives in the Arlington area,” said Lisa Cisneros, president of the Downtown Arlington Business Association and owner of Olympic Escrow. She said local shoppers develop a nice relationship with those business owners. A lot of these locally owned businesses also give back to the community through their support of schools, youth organizations and senior centers. “It’s

a really nice relationship that continues to grow,” Ciscneros said. “I think there’s really good communication and workability between these organizations,” Cisneros said, adding such collaboration helps Arlington thrive. Cisneros pointed out the numerous events that take place in Arlington that help visitors explore and enjoy the city. Those events include Music at Legion Park, the Arlington Farmers Market, a car show, the Fourth of July parade and Arlington’s Hometown Holidays. Sales tax dollars raised from local purchases that take place in town help pay for the infrastructure and

services residents need. “When you shop local, your sales tax dollars stay local,” said Paul Ellis, city administrator for the city of Arlington. Both Marysville and Arlington collect millions of dollars in sales taxes each year that help pay for essential city services. Marysville has a sales tax rate of 9.3 percent. Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring said sales taxes help pay for roads, parks, police, fire and “all the things that make our community great.” “This is a community that supports its businesses,” Nehring said. “That opens up more opportunity for business in Marysville.” Residents can see a major project under construction that was funded in part through sales tax. Groundbreaking took place in January for the Marysville Civic Center. The new city building will house the police, jail, municipal court, city council chambers, city hall, community development and public works engineering offices. The new campus is located on Delta Avenue between Fifth and Eighth streets east of the railroad tracks and west of Comeford Park. The new building will cost $47 million and is funded by a one-tenth of 1 percent criminal justice sales tax, property sales of existing facilities, general obligation bonds, general fund capital reserves, and the annual operations budget, according to information on Marysville’s website. The city of Arlington, which has a sales tax of 9.2 percent, recently saw an uptick in its sales tax numbers. In 2019, the city collected $5,882,663 which is up from $4,859,868 from the year before. Ellis cited a number of factors for the increase. He said Arlington is seeing a big increase in construction within city limits. Arlington receives sales tax revenue from materials that construction companies purchase in town. In addition, strong consumer confidence led to stronger sales in businesses around town. As the businesses in Arlington thrive, so do the residents who live within town. “You support local businesses and those local businesses hire people in the community,” Ellis said.
Kuhnle’s Tavern A fixture in downtown Marysville for 102 years, Kuhnle’s Tavern offers a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere in the company of friends. Come in for a cold beer, a game of pool, pulltabs or just to shoot the breeze. The friendly staff makes sure customers feel at home and have a good time at Kuhnle’s Tavern. It’s just what you want your favorite hangout to be. The interior features an impressive 125-year-old Brunswick bar and backbar that contribute to the tavern’s sense of history. Kuhnle’s survived Prohibition as a pool room and tackle shop, and its place in the community is enhanced by sponsorship of local sports teams. The friendly staff invites you to stop by for your favorite liquid refreshment. So what’ll it be?

Relocating to Darrington in the 1960s, Grandma Fanny and her family continued the tradition of cooking, serving and working together. Let’s Get Acquainted with North Snohomish County 11 PRC Arlington Here at PRC Arlington, we strive to create an unmatched customer experience and provide the finest cannabis Washington has to offer. We partner with growers that, like us, are also committed to pushing the bounds of excellence in this industry, and the greater community as a whole. Owners of PRC Arlington Joel and Scott got their start as medical patients early on with their own gardens. They decided to open their own dispensary up North and found Conway to be the perfect spot. Joel explains “Once 502 was implemented we knew the only way to keep medical alive was to apply for a retail license, as the State was implying only those with retail licenses will get medical marijuana endorsements. We applied on the last day of the application opening and 5 months later, we ended up being the first one drawn for a retail license in Skagit County.” Currently PRC has 2 locations in Conway and Arlington. “Scott and I were both raised in Snohomish County. We knew Arlington had a need for a cannabis shop like ours” said Joel, and so, PRC Arlington was born. Both owners credit their medical dispensary background and passion for getting great products to their customers as something that sets PRC apart from other retailers. Excellent customer service as well as a huge selection of products for both customers and medical patients is also what differentiates PRC.
