Wonowon 4-H Club Report

Howdy ya’ll, I hope that everyone is enjoying their month of May!!

We had our Club Judging Rally on April 30th. We Judged Beef, Broodmares, and the ID Table. After we judged our Judge Walt Hedges explained some things on the ID Table that we didn’t know what they were and then he also showed us how they worked. He also explained why he placed the Broodmares the way he did, he also explained what he was looking for in a broodmare. Then we went to the Beef, and he talked about his reasons for placing the class of Conformation Cows the way he did, he also explained his reasons. Thank you so much Walt and Val Hedges for letting us come and do our Club Judging Rally there. Also, a very big thank you to Walt for being the Judge.

We also had our Club meeting after we did the Judging and we talked about Achievement Days, this year Achievement Days are going to be a lot different, we aren’t allowed to use the North

Peace Fall Fair Grounds this year, so we are going to do Achievement Days in Dawson Creek. We also discovered that we can’t really have barn decorations, we are going to sell our steers at the Auction Mart in Dawson as well. We also had a look at the younger members, animals and they look extremely well. I am very happy with their animals, and I am also very proud of the younger members for how well they are doing with their animals.

Sara and I are working on our 4-H animals now, they are all doing very well in catching, leading, and are growing very good. We have had different people lead Sara’s steer and the heifers and they are leading very well. My steer is leading good too just don’t trust him enough to let other people lead him yet. I am looking forward to showing my animals and t seeing everyone else’s animals.

A very Special Thank You To CO-OP For Sponsoring US Grace Trask Wonowon Club Reporter

Keep your Premises Identification account up to date

information and other key data in one system is critical for a quick and effective emergency response.

PID can also be used as an early warning system to share information on diseases that could affect certain species on your premises. This is why it is crucial to have accurate species types listed on your account as these notifications are tailored to the species that would be affected.

“Premises Identification (PID) is a tool used to plan for, control, and prevent the spread of livestock and poultry disease, such as avian influenza or foot and mouth disease, and is crucial for the livestock industry in the event of an animal health incident,” says Dr. Keith Lehman, chief provincial veterinarian with the Alberta government. “The quicker we can locate livestock, the more quickly and accurately we can respond. In fact, PID was used heavily in 2022 to help control the spread of avian influenza and disseminate information to poultry owners in the province and will continue to be an important tool in managing the anticipated spread this spring.”

PID links livestock and poultry to land locations or premises within the PID system. Having accurate animal locations, contact

“Effective emergency response and the ability to protect your animals depends on accurate information. It is important that you update your PID account when there are changes to your operation (contact information, species, and maximum capacity, etc.) or if you no longer have livestock on your premises. Inaccurate and outdated information can put your animals at risk during an emergency by delaying notification or delivering an incorrect response from emergency responders.”

Producers can review and update their information online, or by calling the Premises Identification Program Delivery team at 780422-9167. Producers can also call 310-FARM for more information.

Beatton Community 4-H Report

Hi my name is Wendy Whitford and I am the reporter of this year Beatton Community 4-H Club. We have had a couple rides and done lots of pattern work and showmanship with the little kids. Our last couple rides have been canceled because of forest fires and rain, but we all hope our next ride will be soon.

This year’s Achievement Days have been on hold because the leaders are still trying to figure out where to hold it this year because the fall fair grounds are under inspection and won’t get the results until June 30, but the Achievement Days might be in Dawson.

For Horse 4-H we have to learn a pattern to show at Achievement Days, I’m on pattern and

level 3. My pattern is 3 pages long and kinda hard. Our theme this year for Achievement Days for our barn theme is medieval times.

My horse Kitkat has to get her teeth done which means she has to go to the vet to get her teeth done. What the vet does is they look at their teeth and make sure they are all even, if they are not even they will take a special tool and shave them down so they are even because if the teeth are not even your horse might have troubles eating and gaining weight like Kitkat. Deworming is also a good thing to do in the spring because your horse might have worms like Kitkat did and it could infect them from gaining weight and it could also hurt their stomach.

Don’t prune until end of Sept.

To help keep Alberta Dutch elm disease (DED) free, the Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease (STOPDED) encourages everyone to pay attention to the provincial elm pruning ban between April 1 and September 30.

To help eliminate beetle habitat, it is important to properly prune all dead wood out of elms and dispose of all pruned elm wood and elm firewood by burning, burying or chipping by March 31. Stored elm wood can harbour the elm bark beetles that can carry DED.

“Elm bark beetles are responsible for spreading the deadly DED fungus. They feed on healthy elms and breed in dead and dying elm trees,” says Janet Feddes-Calpas, STOPDED executive director.

“If elm trees are pruned during the pruning ban period, beetles that are active at this time can be attracted to the scent of the fresh wound and possibly infect an otherwise healthy elm with DED. Once an elm tree is infected with

DED, it will die within that year.”

Having trees pruned properly is important. Every year improper pruning kills or ruins many trees. Pruning like any other skill requires knowledge and should be done by a professional certified arborist who can determine what type of pruning is necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance, and safety of the trees.

Topping or removing an excessive amount of live wood is not recommended on any variety of trees and will weaken the tree’s structure.

For more information, call the STOPDED hotline at 1-877-837-ELMS or see Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease. To find an ISA Certified Arborist, see International Society of Arboriculture Prairie Chapter.

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease

Large Animals: 250-782-1080

Small Animals: 250-782-5616 www.dcvet.ca

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease is a relatively recent disease that infects rabbits and hares in Canada. Although the disease was first reported in 1984 in China, it didn’t appear in Canada and the United States until the early 2000’s.

It is a very contagious disease and is caused by a virus that results in liver failure, severe sudden illness, bleeding and often death in rabbits. The time from exposure until the onset of symptoms is quite short – usually 1-4 days. Affected rabbits often are found suddenly dead with no obvious signs or in some cases will show some symptoms of illness such as a fever, decreased energy, decreased appetite, shortness of breath, bloody discharge from orifices and sometimes neurologic signs such as seizures, paralysis or difficulty walking.

The virus is spread by contact with any bodily secretions from sick rabbits including feces, urine, saliva and blood. The virus is very stable and can remain active in the environment for quite long periods of time. It only takes very few virus particles to cause infection and because of this the disease can be spread by fomites (contaminated items) such as clothing, footwear, hair, feed, dishes and even vehicle tires. There is some risk of it being spread by biting insects.

There is no specific treatment for this disease and if a rabbit becomes ill and the disease is suspected supportive veterinary care may help although often rabbits die quite quickly from the disease and there may not be adequate time to attempt to treat them.

There are important steps to preventing this infection in pet rabbits including:

1. Limiting contact between pet rabbits and wild rabbits

2. Minimizing exposure of rabbits to insects

3. Limiting the introduction of new rabbits and isolating new rabbits to monitor for any signs of disease in them before introducing them to other rabbits

4. Cleaning and disinfecting clothing, footwear, and other rabbit care items before attending pet rabbits

5. Not taking rabbits to shows or isolating show rabbits

A vaccine has recently become available in Canada to help in the prevention and control of this disease. Contact your veterinarian if you are interested in learning about the vaccine and to decide if this would be a good option for your rabbits.

Open Farm Days 2023

Are you ready?

Alberta Open Farms Days is an incubator for agri-tourism and rural sustainability, bringing Albertans together through educational and experiential agricultural-based initiatives to learn about where their food comes from. As well, rural communities and some of Alberta’s most talented chefs will be hosting a memorable series of farm to table culinary events that will be held around the province using Alberta farm products.

In 2022, more than 110 host farms were part of Open Farm Days, welcoming almost 16,000 Albertans to their farms and ranches; and, 92% of host farms said they would participate again.

Host farms have included traditional farms, livestock (bison, cattle, alpaca, sheep, llama, goat, poultry) farms and ranches, organic operations, corn mazes, wineries, craft distilleries, meaderies, craft breweries, stables, petting zoos, along with honey, fruit, vegetable, grain and u-pick farms.

Since 2013, Open Farm Days has seen nearly 150,000 person visits, injecting over $1.1 million into the rural economy through on-farm sales. Since its launch, the public has enjoyed over 900 Alberta farms. The number of culinary events has also increased over the years, from just 12 in 2013 to 70 in 2022.

Participating farms and ranches have had very positive experiences being part of Alberta Open Farm Days:

“Many visitors were unaware that hops could be grown in Alberta. Many ‘aha’ moments were had during our sensory panel as many people were surprised at the different aromas a hop can produce.” (Water Valley Hops)

“Due to our relationship to the rural farming community with our markets and programs, we feel that Open Farm Days is a great opportunity to promote our local growers and producers for all areas of products. We can highlight wine, beer, produce, eggs, beef, honey, dairy products, wild meats, micro greens and more within the county of Stettler.” (Stettler District Agricultural Society)

Honey bees the MVP

To recognize and celebrate the important role honey bees play in the province’s agricultural industry and local food system, May 29 was proclaimed Day of the Honey Bee.

“Honey bees play a crucial, vital and unsung role in B.C.’s food security, environment, agricultural industry and our everyday lives,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “That’s why the Bee BC and Bee Tech Transfer programs are so important, as they help beekeepers of all ages ensure we have healthy bees and other pollinators now and in the future. Bees play an essential role in local food systems, and I’m delighted to highlight these busy little workers on Day of the Honey Bee.”

beekeepers with permitted hives and First Nations can apply for the next round of Bee BC funding. Applications are open and will be accepted until June 30, 2023.

“The little honey bee is a mighty force in the world, providing pollination for many of the agricultural products we eat or our livestock depend on,” said Jeff Lee, first vice-president, BC Honey Producers Association (BCHPA).

Putting poor crops to good use

Low Yield Allowance is a standard part of the production insurance program, and is meant for situations of extreme heat and severe drought. Alberta is doubling the low yield threshold to allow for additional cereal or pulse crops to be salvaged for livestock feed. For example, the barley crop threshold will be increased from 150 to 300 kg per acre.

“Our Government is working in close collaboration with provinces to ensure farmers who are experiencing the impacts of extreme weather caused by climate change have access to the support they need. This adjustment to the crop insurance program will increase access to feed for livestock producers when they need it most, to ensure they can get through this crisis.

“Alberta’s hardworking farmers and ranchers have been hit with dry conditions that threaten their livelihoods. We will do everything

we can to help Alberta’s agriculture industry make the best of a terrible situation. We’ve heard industry’s call for help, and this change will help farmers and ensure some good can come out of these crops.”

Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry

“We recognize that this year’s conditions have had a significant impact on our producers—and we’ve been here to listen, take feedback, and mobilize our teams as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Darryl Kay, CEO, Agriculture Financial Services Corporation

Together with the federal government, Alberta is making an adjustment to crop insurance that will allow farmers to put

more poor quality crops towards livestock feed, helping ease feed shortages for livestock during the current drought.

This adjustment encourages producers to act swiftly to salvage crops for livestock feed rather than watch their fields deteriorate further, and risk harvesting nothing. As these crops would otherwise be covered by crop insurance, there will likely be minimal additional payments resulting from this decision.

Under the federal-provincial cost-shared Canadian Agricultural Partnership, there are a number of business risk management programs available through Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) to help Alberta producers manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farms, including crop insurance.

Alberta’s AFSC has a total of 119 active adjustment team members following the addition of 21 new members in December 2020 and April 2021. The government

has advised crop adjusters to be flexible and complete early assessments with affected crop and hay land; for example, offering alternative use of crops to address forecasted feed shortages in our livestock industry.

Last week, Alberta, along with Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, received verbal commitment from the federal government that a joint AgriRecovery program will be initiated to support producers affected by drought conditions prior to a federal election. Assessments are currently underway in these provinces.

Alberta announced a 20 per cent reduction in premium costs for crop, pasture and forage insurance earlier this year which protects against weather-related production loss. As a result:

Hideaway Adventure Grounds: Rumble Stop at Kikino Metis Settlement

Rumble Stop

When “Papa John” Ritchie moved back home to the Kikino Metis Settlement in the early 2000’s he had a dream to open a basic campground as a retirement project. He wanted to incorporate his love of camping and the outdoors with the added benefit of remaining independent.

Little did he know that his plan for retirement would fast track into becoming one of the leading experiences for Indigenous Tourism Alberta, of which John is a founding board member.

Shortly after opening Hideaway Adventure Grounds for basic camping in 2018 John was introduced to Indigenous tourism, the sharing of cultures and the opportunities it presented in expanding his business through his work at the Lac La Biche Canadian Native Friendship Centre. Later they would become his partners in offering programming in the Indigenous ways of knowing at Hideaway.

With 160 acres of aspen forest available with maintained, natural trails throughout, John went to work. Now at Hideaway Adventure Grounds you can comfort camp in one of 4 private canvas wall tents. Each has 2 beds and firewood is

bedding and other personal items. When Phase 2 is completed, overnight guests will be able to choose between the wall tents or tipi sites.

Having experienced an overnight stay at Hideaway Adventure Grounds, the privacy given by the well established buffer zone was a plus. I wasn’t one of the lucky ones to see the northern lights unhampered by the artificial light created by towns and cities, however the night sounds of the forest were soothing. I identified the sound of the wind blowing through the leaves, owls hooting and the distant howl of coyotes. Other wildlife you might hear or see while at Hideaway Adventure Grounds are rabbits, deer, a wide variety of birds, the occasional moose or wolf.

Hideaway Adventure Grounds has an onsite group cooking area that includes a propane grill. Future development plans include showers and indoor kitchen facilities. It is an excellent place for small family reunions, private weddings, and other small group gatherings where nature and comfort are combined.

For individuals, daytime experiences can include learning basic land survival skills such as fire making, shelter building, and cooking on an open fire.

Traditional craft making and Indigenous cultural workshops are also available.

For groups, cultural jigging, fiddle playing, a Jingle Dress dancer for a Powwow demonstration and other Indigenous activities are available by special request.

Hideaway Trading Post is on site. The shop supports the work of local Indigenous artists. When you purchase something to remember your trip by, you are helping to offset the costs of youth programming to the local community offered by Hideaway.

If you are a bird watcher, Lac La Biche is a short half hour drive away and is a staging and nesting area for shorebirds and waterfowl that include geese, swans, pelicans, and numerous varieties of ducks, many of them seen in flight at Hideaway adventure grounds.

Hideaway is about 2 hours NE of Edmonton; 45 minutes from

Smoky Lake; 30 minutes from Lac La Biche and 25 minutes from the Iron Horse Trail. This central location allows you to stay at Hideaway Adventure Grounds, experience all the programming offered, and make it your home base while exploring other nearby communities, their attractions or participating in their events.

For out-of-province guests, Hideaway Adventure Grounds is about halfway between Edmonton and Fort McMurray, both with International airports. Lac La Biche has a small airport for private airplanes.

To learn more about Hideaway Adventure Grounds and connect with “Papa John” at 780-623-8885 or follow Hideaway Adventure Grounds on Facebook, Instagram or TikTock. You can also check out his website at https:// hideawayadventuregrounds.ca/

Forage U-Pick

An interactive forage selection tool launched for Western Canada

The Saskatchewan Forage Council is excited to announce the launch of Forage U-Pick, a new interactive forage species selection tool for Western Canada. Designed to provide users with information for forage selection, seeding rates, and weed management, Forage U-Pick is a mobile-friendly tool offering timely and efficient advice.

Forages for hay and pasture are essential for beef production. Ensuring that forage species are well-suited to growing conditions improves establishment rates, yield, vigour and quality. The Forage U-Pick tool provides information that can help to reduce costs, improve utilization and number of grazing days, and increase profitability.

Forage U-Pick is an intuitive and easy-to-use platform:

Forages Suited to My Field

allows users to choose their province, soil zone or a regional zone and provides a list of forage species that are suited to the selected zone.

The Seeding Rate Calculator is used once users have selected the forages they want to seed, ensuring that the right amount of seed is put into the ground to have the best possible chance for a good stand.

The Forage Weed Management area of the tool touches on how the economic success in forages can increase with proper weed control.

Forage U-Pick, launching June 8th, can be found on the SFC website www.saskforage.ca and at www.upick.beefresearch.ca.

BC helps farmers prepare for extreme weather

Farmers and ranchers are being supported with a new round of funding to help strengthen their resilience to wildfires, flooding and extreme heat, and mitigate future climate impacts.

“Climate change and extreme weather pose an array of challenges for people throughout British Columbia, including our farmers, ranchers and food producers,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “It is important that we support them with programs like this so they can be more resilient to the impacts of climate change and better protect their livelihoods, while ensuring we have a stable, sustainable food supply.”

The Extreme Weather Preparedness for Agriculture program was launched as a pilot last summer and aims to build a more resilient and sustainable agriculture and food sector by helping prepare for future climate events, such as wildfires, flooding and heatwaves.

In the first year of the program, more than $1.4 million supported 129 projects in the poultry, dairy, beef, tree fruit and berry sectors. One of the primary projects funded was improving barn cooling systems to help keep poultry and cattle safe in the event of extreme heat.

“The welfare of our animals is the number 1 concern for B.C. farmers when we’re faced with extreme weather,” said Mark Siemens, farmer and president, BC Egg Producers Association. “This program supports important projects like improved cooling systems and shade trees that provide a safer space for animals. The poultry sector was hit hard during the 2021 heat dome and flood as our farms had never been tested through these circumstances, and this funding will ensure we’re able to better prepare for and mitigate future extreme weather events.”

For 2023, the program is supporting projects

with up to $2.5 million. It is expanding its criteria to include B.C.-licensed apiculture (beekeeping) and aquaculture producers, as well as federally licensed cannabis and hemp producers.

“More than ever, farmers need to be equipped to deal with the kind of extreme weather events that have devastated agricultural production in several regions of the province in recent years,” said Danielle Synotte, executive director, BC Agriculture Council. “BC Agriculture Council has advocated for more support for industry in this area and is pleased to see this funding is already making a difference for the agriculture sector.”

The program is part of B.C.’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy, the Province’s plan to help people, communities and businesses work together to be better prepared for the impacts of climate change.

Applications for the Extreme Weather Preparedness for Agriculture program are open from Tuesday, May 23, until June 14, 2023. Eligible applicants can access up to $35,000 in cost-shared funding per project.
