4-H Report — Beaverlodge 4-H Beef Club
www.gasfireplace.net
My name is Keaton Tarnowski, and we are having a healthy and exciting start to our 4-H year, starting out with an excellent feed selection speech by Doug Roxburgh with Bulls Eye Feed. Mr. Keegan Scorgie hosted a Pick Your Steer Workshop at Mr. Smith’s farm. Many thanks to those three for making these workshops available and setting us up for success with their knowledgeable experience. Our Achievement Day on May 29 was a blast and I know I enjoyed it. The club’s gratitude to all who made it possible; the judges, cooks, buyers, and supporters. All members got their steers sold and enjoyed showmanship and grooming. Also thank you to Beaverlodge IGA for buying my steer Roger. This 4-H year we have 38 members and three Cleavers all excited for a new 4-H year. Looking forward to another community service food drive with FCSS on November 21st and our club joining with the fire deptartment in Beaverlodge. Thanks to the community for their continued support.

Field selection important for fall manure, compost applications here are several factors to consider when selecting the right fields before applying manure or compost this fallthis fall, according to Trevor Wallace, nutrient management specialist with the Alberta government. “Knowing the rules and using the 4R Nutrient Stewardship principles (considering the right place, right source, right rate, and right time) helps to optimize nutrient use efficiency when applying manure or compost, while keeping nutrients in the field and reducing nuisance impacts on neighbours.” When selecting the right fields to apply manure or compost, consider legislative setbacks, soil and field conditions, and future nutrient need. “Producers are required to take reasonable care to ensure runoff from manure or compost does not leave the field or create an inappropriate disturbance. Alberta’s Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) minimum setback requirements for spreading manure or compost need to be factored into both the field selection process and manure application plan.” Setbacks help to reduce the risk of manure or compost leaving the land on which it was applied and to reduce the nuisance impacts of the application. Producers must: • apply manure or compost at least 150 m away from neighbouring residences or other unowned occupied buildings when applying on directly seeded land or forage, • keep 30 m away from any water wells, • stay 10 m away from a common body of water if subsurface injecting, or 30 m away if surface applying, • increase setback distances when the land sloping toward a water body increases with slope: 30 m for less than four per cent, 60 m between four per cent and six per cent, and 90 m for slopes between six per cent and 12 per cent, and • not spread on slopes equal to or greater than 12 per cent. The right field will also be determined by considering the previous crop/forage, soil fertility, moisture conditions and current ground cover. Sandy soils, dry field conditions and limited ground cover significantly increase the risk for soil erosion. “Field conditions may not be suitable for manure or compost application if the AOPA requirement for incorporation is going to significantly increase the risk of soil erosion,” explains Wal-
lace. “AOPA rules state that manure and compost applied to cultivated fields must be incorporated within 48 hours from the time when it is first applied, unless operators have a permit that specifies a different incorporation requirement.” Wallace adds in extreme cases where erosion is already an issue, operators may be able to protect the soil, at least in the short-term, by spreading manure onto fields with no incorporation. Producers should contact the Natural Resources Conservation Board prior to spreading if they are concerned about soil erosion. “Producers should consider spreading on fields with forage or directseeded crops because these fields do not require incorporation of manure or compost and thus reduces the risk for soil erosion. In addition, producers can check with neighbours, who may be interested in the soil health benefits from manure and compost application, for access to fields that pose minimal risk to soil erosion and nutrient loss.” Low moisture conditions, resulting in poor plant growth, means that there has been limited crop nitrogen (N) removal. Also little or no leaching means that unused fertilizer N remains in the soil from the past year’s fertilizer application. “Unless we have an unusually wet winter and spring, this nitrate-N will be mostly available for crop use next year. The only way to know the availability of soil nutrients is to soil test and adjust manure and compost application rates accordingly to get the biggest benefit from your manure resources. The amount of carry over and future crop need should be a factor in field selection. “Considering these rules and 4R stewardship principles when choosing the fields for application will keep your soil healthy and nutrients in the field, not to mention, help you to get the biggest bang for your buck to maximize crop/forage potential and minimize costs especially during low moisture conditions,” says Wallace. For more information, see Manure Spreading Regulations and Manure Management Record Keeping Regulations or contact the Ag-Info Centre at 310-FARM (3276).

U.S. predicts contraction in hog breeding herd What the U.S. hog market means for Canada’s swine herd

fornia’s Proposition 12 increased production costs, causing some reduction to hog supplies. “Currently, U.S. pork producer margins in 2023 have been eroding to nearly breakeven,” says Boyda. “With a weaker demand, the U.S. pork sector faces oversupply. Further contraction is expected.” “Canada’s swine herd is also forecast to contract in 2024,” says Boyda. “Reductions in slaughter capacity in Quebec and Quebec’s sow herd reduction will lead to declines in hog production. Olymel LP has announced closure of three facilities this year and plans to shut down the Saint-Hyacinthe facility later this year. “Olymel has closed five sow units in Alberta and one in Saskatchewan, which will see its western sow herd reduced by 17,000 sows. Winkler Meats in Manitoba and Johnsonville, a Wisconsin company, entered a partnership to expand the Winkler sow facility and producers are also awaiting the opening of the Moose
“The driver behind the higher inventories is productivity … Pigs per litter were an average of 11.61, which is up from 11.13 for September 1, 2022. The higher pigs per litter offset the decline in breeding stock.” Ann Boyda Provincial Livestock Market Analyst Government of Alberta
Jaw sow processing plant. This would increase sow processing in Western Canada, drawing on the supply that is currently shipped to the U.S. Increased sow slaughter and lacklustre pork demand will contribute to lower pork production,” says Boyda.

he USDA Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report was released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service on Sept. 28. Overall, estimates were higher than expected for all categories, except for farrowings. Inventory of all U.S. hogs and pigs on September 1, 2023 was estimated at 74.3 million head, up 0.3 per cent or 194,000 head from Sept. 1, 2022, and up two per cent from Jun. 1, 2022. “The driver behind the higher inventories is productivity,” explains Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government. “Pigs per litter were an average of 11.61, which is up from 11.13 for Sept. 1, 2022. The higher pigs per litter offset the decline in breeding stock. “U.S. hogs kept for breeding fell 73,000 head to 6.08 million head, a decline of 1.2 per cent from 2022. Poor margins have resulted in contraction in the breeding herd. Earlier in the year, some facilities closed due to profitability issues, however productivity compensated for any loss in inventory. The
Sept. 1, 2023 breeding herd is reported to be the lowest since 2016.” U.S. sow farrowings from June through August were 2.95 million head, 3.7 per cent less than the same period in 2022. For the September to November 2023 period, producers intend to have 2.93 million sows farrow, down five per cent from actual farrowings for this period a year ago. “Farrowing intentions for December 2023 to February 2024 are anticipated to drop further by one per cent from that same period a year prior. Signs point to a smaller pig crop for September to November 2023 and therefore a smaller market hog level by next spring.” In prior years, U.S. hog supplies were impacted by disease concerns. In 2014 Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea resulted in herd reduction, but subsequent greater demand, increased demand and improved profitability resulted in expansion. African Swine Fever outbreaks in other markets (primarily China and Asian countries) further fueled demand and expansion leading to record large supply in 2019 and 2020. lberta’s government is launching the Agricultural Societies Infrastructure Revitalization Program, a new capital grant that allocates $2.5 million annually to help ag societies update existing facilities. These buildings are central hubs in their communities, offering residents and visitors opportunities to gather, build connections and engage with their neighbours. Alberta’s communities need effective, up-to-date facilities to encourage community involvement and growth, said RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. “Facilities like community halls, ice rinks and rodeo grounds are integral to the successful operation of Alberta’s ag societies. This funding makes sure rural communities can continue to benefit from the events, services, educational programs and volunteer opportunities that agricultural societies provide.” The program will allow agricultural societies to address issues related to aging infrastructure, ultimately extending the useful life of their community buildings. Applications for eligible projects opened on Oct. 5 and the grant can be used to make improvements including roof repairs, accessibility enhancements, heating upgrades and window installations. “Events like rural fairs, farmers markets and rodeos support community building and agricultural improvement across rural Alberta. This gov-
• The Agricultural Societies Infrastructure Revitalization Program grant awards between $10,000 and $100,000 for individual projects. • Alberta has 290 agricultural societies, the highest number in Canada. • Alberta’s agricultural societies own or operate more than 900 facilities and host more than 37,000 activities and events per year. • The oldest agricultural societies date back to 1879, predating the province. ernment funding will help agricultural societies keep their facilities modern, accessible and safe for generations to come,” said Brett Warder, president of the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies. “More than 100,000 people pass through our society’s gates every year for events, programs and rentals. Our ag society has been around for more than a century, so this new grant will be a key support in making much-needed upgrades. We are extremely grateful to the Government of Alberta for this investment.” The program builds upon the Government of Alberta’s existing Agricultural Societies Grant Program, which provides annual funding to support agricultural societies’ operational expenses.

Canada, B.C. helps farmers mitigate, adapt to climate change
A
s British Columbians continue to experience the impacts of record drought and wildfire, farmers and ranchers are receiving support so they can continue to produce food in a changing climate. “Farmers, ranchers and producers are feeling the impacts of climate change,” said Lawrence MacAulay, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, in the Oct. 5 news release. “Investments in programs such as the Regional Extension Program will help ensure that farmers across British Columbia have the tools they need to prepare for, and mitigate the effects of, climate change on their operations. The efforts taken today will support a strong and resilient food system for Canadians for years to come.” The Regional Extension Program supports regional projects focusing on research, knowledge transfer and new technologies. Funded by the governments of Canada and British Columbia, the goal of the program is to ensure healthy soils and ecosystems in agricultural communities, while helping reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and prepare for, and mitigate the impacts of, drought, wildfire, flooding and extreme temperatures. “Climate change is creating more challenges for our farmers, ranchers and food producers, and we’re seeing the impacts of these extreme weather events in our communities,” said Pam Alexis, B.C. Minister of Agriculture and Food. “We’re proactively helping producers so they can better prepare for, adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change. This will help them build more resilient and sustainable practices so they can better protect their farms and livestock and ensure our food supply is stable now and in the future.”
The program funds activities such as data sharing, on-farm demonstrations, workshops and webinars that highlight best practices and the latest research and technologies to support sustainable agriculture. There are 16 projects underway with more starting in the coming months. Several projects focus on helping regions prepare for and adapt to drought. In drought-affected regions of B.C., workshops are being offered to give farmers information to be better prepared and implement new strategies and best management practices that help them adapt to the impacts of climate change. Other projects include workshops and field days on “silvopasture” for farmers and ranchers so they can learn about and apply new and best management practices that improve water quality and land-use planning. A key feature of this program is the use of local knowledge whereby ministry staff work directly with farmers to identify and develop projects that strengthen both climate resilience and food security. Regional engagement sessions will be in November. Interested farmers can call AgriServiceBC at 1 888 221-7141 to find out about activities in their region. The $1.5 million in program funding is from the province’s CleanBC initiative and the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). Sustainable CAP is a five-year (2023-28) $3.5-billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen competitiveness, innovation and resilience of the agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector. Sustainable CAP includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities and a $2.5-billion commitment cost-shared 60 per cent federally and 40 per cent provincially/territorially for programs that are designed and delivered by provinces and territories.

Animal health program to help B.C. farmers prepare for avian influenza risk B.C. News
A
s the risk of avian influenza increases this fall with the migration of waterfowl and other birds, B.C. poultry farmers are being supported with new planning and preparedness strategies and stronger biosecurity measures on their farms. “Avian influenza can be devastating for B.C. farmers and have a significant impact on their livelihoods as well as on local economies and food supply,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “This is why we put a program in place that is now helping them increase
their biosecurity measures and providing new tools and strategies to prepare for and respond to any potential outbreak as we head into the fall migration. B.C.’s poultry and egg farmers have shown great dedication to ensure they have the necessary safety measures in place, and we will continue to work closely together with them to protect their animals and our overall food security.” In spring 2023, the $5-million Farmed Animal Disease Program was introduced to help livestock and poultry farmers prepare for the risk of animal disease, such as avian influenza, swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease. program, delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation, is helping fund the planning and purchasing of equipment needed for disease response, training exercises, enhanced biosecurity measures, and the research and implementation of strategies that reduce the risk of infection and disease. “This program will increase the poultry sector’s on-farm biosecurity levels and the sector’s response time during an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI),” said Steve Heppell, chair, B.C. Poultry Association. “Partnering with the Province of British Columbia on farmed animal disease projects will keep British Columbia on the leading edge of prevention across the entire sector, including poultry farmers, poultry and egg processors, graders, feed companies and hatcheries. Improved biosecurity and alternative euthanasia methods to fight HPAI will benefit all British Columbians through reduced disease spread and increased food security.” In addition to supporting the B.C. poultry industry, the B.C. Pork Producers Association has received funding from the program to help prevent swine fever through enhanced biosecurity on B.C. hog farms.
Quick Facts: • The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is the lead provincial ministry responsible for planning and preparing for animal disease outbreaks affecting the livestock and poultry sector. • The ministry’s Animal Health Centre, located in Abbotsford, handles more than 6,000 case submissions annually while diagnosing, monitoring and assisting in controlling and preventing diseases such as avian influenza. • Avian influenza is a federally regulated disease and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) leads the investigation and response with provincial support for testing, mapping, surveillance and disposal. • Since April 2022, the CFIA has confirmed outbreaks of the highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza on 104 premises around B.C., affecting more than 3.6 million birds. • The most recent confirmed case of avian influenza on a B.C. premises, as of press time, was on Oct. 21.

RDAR announces genomics investments to accelerate the delivery of sustainable climate solutions to Alberta producers RDAR Investment of $2.4 million in three projects leveraged to $19.7 million with Genome Canada and regional partners RDAR news release
R
esults Driven Agriculture Research recently announced the the investment of $2.4 million in three Accelerating Agriculture Innovation projects that target climate smart agriculture and food systems initiatives. RDAR is proud to invest in these genomic projects, together with regional partners. Its investment is leveraged with funds from Genome Canada and partners for a total investment of $19.7 million. This is the first investment from the new Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership (Sustainable CAP) 2023 — 2028, funded jointly by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation. These funds aim to
strengthen the competitiveness, innovation and resiliency of the agriculture and agri-food sector in Canada. “I recently had the opportunity to meet with producers in Alberta who have adopted rotational grazing practices and saw the benefits delivered by our climate initiatives,” says Lawrence MacAulay, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “The projects announced today will accelerate our understanding of how combined genomics and grazing management practices can influence soil and livestock genomes, driving rangeland ecosystems for carbon sequestration and lower GHG emissions.” Genomic technology is the path forward for Alberta producers, according to RDAR. erates understanding of and directs the use of molecular biology tools to help producers reduce environmental impacts, increase resilience, and improve disease prevention in livestock and crops. “I look forward to seeing the positive impact these new projects will have on our province’s agriculture industry,” says RJ Sigurdson, Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. “The enhanced understanding of genomics gained from this research will help Alberta farmers and ranchers strengthen their sustainable practices and benefit from economic growth.” Through genomic investments by the federal and provincial governments, Genome Canada and partners will help to ensure that Alberta’s producers have the tangible research outcomes they require to make informed decisions that improve the productivity, profitability, and competitiveness of their farming operation. “RDAR is committed to advancing agriculture through genomics, and we foresee the projects announced today accelerating the adaptation of crops to climate change and the drive to sustainable livestock production,” says Redmond, CEO of RDAR. “This work is essential as Alberta agriculture responds to climate change, builds a more resilient industry, serves new, environmentally conscious high-value markets, and returns greater profits to producers.”
“Cattle play an important role in sustainable food systems,” says Melissa Downing, cattle farmer and RDAR board vice-chair. “The benefits of responsible grazing practices are becoming increasingly apparent. Validating those benefits through research will help beef producers achieve both ecological sustainability and economic viability.” Strategic investment in these projects aim to advance Alberta’s agriculture industry by accelerating the farm gate adaptation of genomic technology. Outcomes from these genomic research projects will help producers from across the province access and adopt new solutions for improving grazing management, soil carbon sequestration, and climate resiliency. “Exploring the use of new lentil genomics, combined with different rotations to increase yields and decrease fertilizer usage is good for the environment and producers’ economic sustainability,” says D’Arcy Hilgartner, Pulse Crop Producer, Past Chair of Alberta Pulse Growers, and an RDAR board director. “Pulses in a crop rotation provide multiple benefits to Alberta farmers. They provide a break in disease cycles, different marketing options, and have a low carbon footprint. Exploring the use of new lentil genomics, combined with different rotations to increase yields and decreased fertilizer usage, is good for the environment and producers’ economic sustainability.”

All farmers are encouraged to apply. “All it takes to be a director is a good head on your shoulders, and a willingness to speak up and strive for positive change, no matter how steep the roadblocks,” says interim chair, Tara Sawyer, who farms near Acme, Alberta. While it is a new chapter for the commission, Alberta Grains is proud to stem from over 40 years of combined farmer-led advocacy efforts. “It is a very exciting time to take on a leadership role within our industry,“ says Jason Lenz, vice-chair, who farms near Bentley, Alta. “The commissions have made profound impacts for grain farmers throughout the years; however, key issues continue to emerge and require ongoing participation from local farmers. Get involved to help ensure growing wheat or barley remains profitable and sustainable for current and future generations.” To be eligible to run for a director position, farmers must have grown or sold wheat or barley and paid a check-off to the Alberta Wheat Commission or Alberta Barley in either the current or previous two fiscal years and produce at least one of the crops within the region in which they are running. Nominators must reside or farm in the same region as the individual being nominated. Nomination forms are available on albertagrains. com and must be received by the Alberta Grains office via email, mail or fax by the end of day on Oct. 31, 2023. More information on the election process is available on the elections page on the Alberta Grains website.

2023 4-H Canada Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction provide $80,000 to youth leaders From 4-H Canada
T
he 2023 recipients of the 4-H Canada Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction (L.E.A.D.) have been selected. The most prestigious scholarship available to 4-H members, the award is supported by L.E.A.D., longtime 4-H Canada partner Canadian National and provides each of the four recipients with $20,000 toward their four-year post-secondary education. Each scholarship is connected to one of 4-H Canada’s four leadership development pillars (Community Engagement & Communications, Science & Technology, Environment & Healthy Living, and Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security). In addition to scholarship funds, recipients benefit from an ongoing mentorship with a prominent expert from their chosen field of study. Congratulations to the 2023 4-H Canada L.E.A.D recipients. “Each year, with CN’s support, we are able to help impressive youth leaders attain their educational goals, not only by providing them with significant financial support, but also by pairing them with a mentor from their desired career field,” explained Hugh Maynard, 4-H Canada interim chief executive officer. “This year’s recipients have shown tremendous
leadership skills and have worked incredibly hard to positively impact their 4-H clubs, their communities, and the world. We are proud to support the next step in their exciting educational journeys, and look forward to seeing what the future holds for these bright young leaders.” In partnership with CN, 4-H Canada launched this scholarship in 2015 to recognize 4-H members who have leveraged their 4-H experience to become exceptional leaders, and gone on to share the best of themselves with their communities - demonstrating leadership excellence, community impact, and personal development. “CN partners with 4-H at the national level to support stronger, safer communities across our network,” said Janet Drysdale, CN senior vice-president and chief stakeholder relations officer. “4-H programs like the L.E.A.D. scholarship help build the next generation of leaders, the people that will drive future advancement and growth in the regions our customers and employees call home.” 4-H Canada congratulates the 2023 L.E.A.D. scholarship recipients. For more information on the L.E.A.D. scholarship, visit 4-h-canada.ca/lead.

Getting thin cows ready for winter
W
ith limited forage available in many pastures, it is difficult to keep cows in good condition going into winter. A cow that is 200 pounds lighter (condition score 2) than what is required will need an extra 1,200 to 1,400 pounds of hay to just keep warm over winter.
It is easier to put weight onto cows when temperatures are warm because maintenance energy needs are lower than when it is cold. Cows that are weaned have a 25 per cent lower energy and protein requirement compared to a lactating cow. Weaning calves early allows more time for cows to put on weight prior to winter. Instead of requiring a ration or grazed forage that has 11 per cent protein and

Calves have a fully functional digestive system at 150 days and can be fed a ration that maintains good growth rates. Providing supplemental feed to cows on poor pastures is an option in some situations. Distance from the pasture, amount, and frequency of feeding all need to be considered. When feeding a pelleted product that contains urea, it contains soluble carbohydrates that are needed to use the urea efficiently. Other products that have minimal carbohydrates are not as efficient.

Many dugouts have very little water this late in the year. Access can be a problem. If a cow does not drink enough water, daily feed intake is reduced, which limits nutrient consumption. Milk production is compromised and weight loss
increases. The quality of dugout water is also a concern. Problems with high total dissolved solids or sodium reduce feed intake and sulfur can cause polio. It may be necessary to wean the cows and provide supplemental feed to improve cow
condition. If the pastures are depleted, it is time to bring the cows home and start a winter feeding program. For more information on a feeding program for your herd, contact Barry at 403741-6032 or bjyarem cio@gmail.com
