PEACE COUNTRY BEEF CONGRESS FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 2024 SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2024 DRYSDALE CENTRE LEWIS HAWKES PAVILION

The Montagneuse 4-H Multi-Club started its 2023-24 year with an organizational meeting on Oct. 2, and decided to have the annual weigh-In Oct. 19 and 21. This year we had lots of our past members join once again but also some new members, which we are excited about. It’s so cool to see us growing. For 2023-24, our club has 24 members and eight Cleavers. The weigh-in was a success, and we are all excited to see if this year we can get our calves even more fat and finished than the year before.

EVERGREEN PARK, GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB

We would like to say a huge thank you to the Ostrem Family for donating the facility, the snacks and drinks. An event is always better when snacks are involved.

Groups team up to address climate change, launch grasslands initiative Canadian Cattle Association

T

he Canadian Cattle Association, Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada on Oct. 25 hosted a pre-COP28 dialogue on climate adaptation through sustainable livestock systems. The event explored climate change and biodiversity loss, as well as the implications of grasslands conversion to sustainable food production. The organizations highlighted efforts now underway on the Grasslands Conservation Initiative, an industry-led initiative proposed by CCA that would take a multi-pronged approach to protect biodiversity, contribute to global food security and restore agricultural lands and habitats. By working with conservation partners like DUC, NCC and Canada’s ranching community, the groups say they can deliver solutions that ensure grasslands remain a foundation for thriving communities and contribute to Canada’s biodiversity and climate goals. While grasslands are one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world, they also provide key opportunities and solutions to address the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Grasslands are vital hotspots of biodiversity, offering valuable ecosystem ser-

vices, providing wildlife habitat, storing carbon, supporting livestock grazing, naturally controlling crop pests, facilitating pollination, reducing erosion and flooding, and providing high-quality food. With an estimated 74 per cent of Canada’s native grasslands already lost, there is urgency to address this crisis. Grassland conservation must be prioritized to ensure the ecosystem continues to provide these benefits as well as the survival of grassland-dependent species. Much of Canada’s remaining grasslands are owned or managed by livestock producers, most of them cattle ranchers. Sustainable ranching in Canada supports resilient landscapes and contributes to global climate and biodiversity goals. Grazing animals have an important function in a healthy grassland ecosystem and the absence of grazing cattle from the landscape threatens the existence of one of the world’s most vulnerable ecosystems. Heading into COP28, the global community is facing challenges, including but not limited to increased food insecurity, rapid biodiversity decline and degradation as well as fragmentation of integral agricultural land and grasslands. These are topics of concern for the COP28 presidency, so Canada has the opportunity to lead by example. Real change will only come with bold, collective action to halt and reverse nature loss.

It is not uncommon for producers to graze annual crop stubble fields. This year, with feed supplies being in short supply, crop regrowth in silage or harvested fields is an option to extend the grazing season. There are risks associated with each of the crops being grazed. Annual crop stubble fields have variable quality. Crop type, amount of grain thrown out by the combine, and weeds present influence nutrient availability. Often, low protein and high fibre found in the straw can restrict feed intake, causing cows to lose condition. A high calcium mineral is recommended.

The current cattle market is strong and looks to stay that way for the fall season. Jennings Martin Cattle Buying will be there for you and your operations as you make those critical fall marketing decisions; including selling forward for winter 2023 and spring 2024. Jennings’ facility in La Glace will be open weekly starting the end of August to buy your bulls, cows and calves saving you the need for shipping to local and southern markets.

Canola regrowth is a high protein and high energy forage. Quality can be as high as a good quality first cut alfalfa grass hay. Cattle may take a day or two to learn to graze the material. Concerns are with high nitrate and sulfur content. Nitrate above 1% on a dry basis can cause animal losses. The more concerning issue is with sulfur levels exceeding 0.5%, which causes polio. There are reports of animals dying from regrowth containing 0.8% sulfur or higher. Limiting access to the regrowth with electric fences and supplying an alternate feed is one option to safely graze the material. Flax is a crop that is harvested late and generally does not regrow in the fall. But, in severe feed shortage areas, some fields can be grazed. High fibre levels make the straw hard for animals to digest, resulting in limited feed intake. Green flax straw remaining in the field can contain prussic acid. The active toxin is hydrogen cyanide. A poison that is very fast acting with the first symptoms being dead animals.

Cover crops are grazed late into the fall. A high protein and energy crop. Not a regrowth situation, but if there are brassica species present such as radish, turnip, forage rapeseed, and kale, these plants are sulfur accumulators. There are feed test results that have come back with levels similar to that found in canola regrowth.

Cutting the regrowth prior to grazing and sending a sample for analysis is recommended. The material is usually high quality and a forage that can be used. It might require more management, but the opportunity to reducing stored feed requirements and lowering winter feed costs are benefits that cannot be overlooked.

WEST NILE DISEASE AND HORSES: what you need to know By Stephanie Parth, DVM

W

West Nile Virus transmission cycle. GRAPHIC: BIOGENTS horses, mules and donkeys can be affected and are considered accidental or dead-end hosts. This means that if a human or horse is infected, they can still develop clinical signs of the disease, but the virus cannot replicate and be carried by the next mosquito that bites them. West Nile Virus is not

contagious so people can’t get it from horses and vice-versa. The virus generally does not affect other mammals or wildlife. West Nile Virus was first discovered in 1937 in the West Nile district of Uganda and is known to be present in the Eastern Hemisphere since then.

est Nile Virus is a mosquitoborne disease that causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord in birds, humans and horses. It seeks out the nervous system and causes meningitis and encephalitis in affected patients. Although a small proportion of humans and horses bitten by viruscarrying mosquitos will show symptoms (approximately 20 and 10 per cent respectively), a number of those affected will develop severe neurologic disease that may become fatal. Only certain species of mosquito can carry West Nile Virus. Its main target is birds, and the wild bird population is the main reservoir. Humans,

ica and 2002 brought an outbreak of human and equine cases. Since then, there have been intermittent outbreaks in humans and horses throughout North America, mostly occurring in mosquito season. Most horses bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus do not develop clinical disease and they will eliminate it without any clinical signs. Those that do get sick may show a transient fever, lethargy, listlessness, weakness, lack of coordination, inability to swallow, reduced appetite, muscle twitching, stumbling and inability to stand. Horses can be affected to varying degrees, from mild neurologic signs to inability to move. There is no specific treatment or antidote, only supportive therapy that includes

anti-inflammatory drugs, pain medications, sedatives, nutritional support, IV fluids and slinging up to prevent myopathy. Despite treatment, some horses never fully recover. More than onethird of horses with clinical signs of West Nile Virus either die or are euthanized to prevent suffering. Unfortunately there was a rise in cases in Western Canada this year. In October, Alberta’s chief provincial veterinarian declared 18 laboratory confirmed cases. This is likely an understatement of the numbers affected because the virus shares many clinical signs with other neurologic diseases, including equine herpes virus. Many affected horses were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccine status at the time of diagnosis. This rise in cases may be due to reduced horse vaccination and new species of mosquitos migrating to Alberta. Blood can be tested in a lab to help confirm the diagnosis of West Nile Virus and rule out other neurologic diseases. It takes 10-14 days to run. Vaccination is key for this disease, as it is a safe and reliable method to reduce clinical signs, morbidity and mortality. This vaccine should be given in spring and boosted at least annually. Also consider reducing exposure to mosquitos by eliminating standing water, using fans in stalls, and using equine safe mosquito repellant. Humans can be affected by the virus but are not infectious. There are reports of the virus being spread in situations such as organ donation but this is not a main method of transmission. There is no human vaccine available for so reducing exposure to mosquitos is the best protection.

The lasting legacy of amputee veterans Service Membership and Honorary CHAMP Membership, in recognition of his tireless work for the organization. Another veteran was Arthur Johnson (19292006), who served with the Canadian Army Special Force as a mortar man with the Royal Canadian Regiment and who joined 26,000 other Canadians in the fight for the freedom of South Korea. In August 1952, on the day he was supposed to go home, he was delayed and found himself on Hill 355 near Seoul in the midst of intense enemy shelling. A mortar landed close by, wounding him and resulting in loss of his right leg above

the knee and damage to his right arm. United by the common bond of amputation, amputees from the First World War, along with those from the Second World War and Korean War, were instrumental in pushing for advancements in prosthetic technology, confronting the stigma of disability, advocating for fair pensions for veterans and providing much-needed support to each other. Rob Larman, a senior advisor at The War Amps and a leg amputee himself, said, “these honorable individuals contributed their time to various activities of the association and shared their

experiences as amputees with others, including modern-day veterans and children. The War Amps’ long history — stretching more than 100 years — is a testament to the tireless efforts of the members who built the Association, and its

many unique programs, from the ground up. “On Remembrance Day especially, but also throughout the year, we pay tribute to the sacrifice and service of all those who served and continue to serve,” he added.

mid the wars, countless Canadian soldiers and nurses displayed extraordinary bravery and unwavering dedication, putting their lives on the line for our country. Many of these individuals returned home bearing the profound physical and emotional scars of war, having lost limbs in the line of duty. Their experiences as amputees not only shaped their own lives but, as members of The War Amps of Canada, they left a lasting legacy on generations of amputees to come. During the First World War, Madeleine Jaffray (1889-1972), served as a nurse in a military hospital near Bordeaux, France. The hospital where she was working was bombarded by German aviators, and she was wounded in the foot by a piece of shrapnel from one of the bombs. “I was coming out of a covered passage in one of the wards when a bomb fell right in front of me,” she said. Her injury led to an amputation, making her Canada’s only female war amputee of the First World War. Jaffray was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French military for her bravery, with an additional star for her services. She also became the only female member of The War Amps at the time. The organization was started by amputee veterans of the First World War to provide each other with the support needed to adapt to their new reality. It was amputees like Jaffray who welcomed the new contingent of amputee veterans following the Second World War, sharing with them all that they had learned. One of these was Mike Krulicki (1925-2020), who was just a teenager when

he volunteered for service in the Second World War. He enlisted with the Irish Regiment of Canada, and in 1944, while fighting in the Italian campaign as part of the attack on the Gothic Line, he stepped on a landmine and lost his right leg below the knee. “Three nights before I stepped on the mine, I had the same identical dream: a ball of fire and me walking through it. That happened three nights before I stepped on it. When I hit the mine, that’s all that seemed to hit my brain, was a ball of fire.” In later years, The War Amps awarded Krulicki two of its most esteemed awards, the Distinguished

Grande Cache Express Tour

S

aturday morning dawned, the air still smoky, though not as bad as the day before, but a lingering presence remained. After our continental breakfast and coffee, we expressed our gratitude to our hosts, Charmaine Larsen and her partner, Gil Gilbert, for the wonderful time. Then, we set off for High Prairie to refuel. During our tours, you have the choice to explore various museums in the region. For instance, there are approximately 13 museums in our region, and we have partnerships with at least 7 of them. It’s impossible to visit all of them on a 3-day trip. On this particular jour-

ney, we decided to skip the award-winning High Prairie Museum and instead headed to DeBolt and the DeBolt & District Pioneer Museum Society. Along the way, we made a stop in Valleyview for a beverage and a leg-stretch break while we waited for our drone film crew, Travis and Jenn Bonner, to catch up. The ride was truly enjoyable, the temperature was becoming more agreeable, and the smoke had considerably cleared. Upon arriving in DeBolt, we were greeted by Connie, a gracious host. Sean and Dave explored the various buildings while Carmen from Video Incognito interviewed Connie in the large barn.

DeBolt & District Pioneer Museum. The history showcased in this museum reflects the survival skills required to live in the north before electricity and natural gas were readily available. This museum is truly amazing and well worth spending an hour or two at! Our next stop was Grande Prairie for lunch and fuel, with Grande Cache in our line of vision. The Frontier Eatery & Seafood did not disappoint! The ride to Grande Cache was beautiful. The sun was shining, traffic was light, and thankfully, the smoke had cleared. We checked into the Grande Cache Inn and sorted out our rooms. The view

from every room was quite spectacular! After changing and ensuring our bikes were secure, we walked down to the Ridge for dinner. This was another fantastic dining spot with friendly staff, decent portions, and flavourful food. After a brief thunderstorm, we returned to the hotel and settled in for a good night’s sleep. The next morning, after a nice breakfast at the hotel, we headed to Grande Cache’s tourism gem, Wild Blue Yonder Rafting. We were equipped with wetsuits, footwear, helmets, and paddles, loaded onto a bus, and set off on a driving adventure. Continues on page A28 »

Once we arrived at the spot where the rafts could be launched down to the river by a guy wire, we followed a narrow pathway to the river. Down at the river, we assisted in launching the rafts. We received a safety orientation, and to our surprise, Clarissa Stoffelsen, Canada’s Top Cadet of 2017, acted as our raft captain. She was incredibly funny, and we had a fantastic time. Those who had been initially apprehensive ended up thrilled and became champions of white-water rafting. The captains kept us entertained, we had water fights with water cannons, and we witnessed some breathtaking scenery. It’s a memory that I believe everyone can cherish. This isn’t the kind of rafting trip where you’re likely to be thrown out of the raft, as long as you follow the simple rules. However, it’s the kind of trip that will have you laughing and thoroughly captivated. Upon completion, we floated to the roadway and

were met by owner Gina Goldie with homemade chocolate chip cookies and hot chocolate, which helped us warm up. After a short bus ride, our 4.5 hours with the good people at Wild Blue Yonder came to an end. We changed into our street clothes and went to find soup and sandwiches to warm up before heading out on the bikes. We stopped at Subway, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I found white fuzz-like hair in my meal, and they refused to refund me; they only offered me something else. I couldn’t stomach the thought of what might be in the other foods. The bathroom was unpleasant, the tables were unclean, the window ledges were filthy, and the staff were on their cell phones when we arrived, with no customers present. Nevertheless, after everyone was warmed up and Continues on page A30 »

fueled up, we continued on. Our next stop was Hinton to collect some gifts from the Northern Rockies Museum and then to eat at the Canadian Steak Out and Grill. However, as is common on trips to the north, we encountered snow, followed by rain that just didn’t let up. We made a quick stop for gas in Hinton and ended up staying in Edson for the night. When we awoke the next morning, the skies were much friendlier. After a hearty breakfast at Smitty’s and a top-up for the bikes, we visited the Galloway Station Museum, Travel Centre & Archives. This place is truly amazing and well done. Sherry, the ED, is an exceptional woman who represents her region and town with grace. We then headed back to the city, where we parted ways at Blackjacks Roadhouse. The film crews were heading to Two Hills and the Run to the Hills Memorial Rally. In summary, the Grande Cache Express is a ton of fun! You can start from Nisku and head for Entwistle, Edson, Hinton, Grande Cache, Grande Prairie, Val-

WOW! WHAT A DAY THAT WAS By Dan Rigler

W

interize Your Ride 2023 has come and gone, and once again, I am in awe. The event is church in action, holding true to the reason we started doing this 11 years ago. This was the first time we had volunteers for every position before the event, and even more showed up on the day. We were able to open the doors early to a long line of vehicles. That line stayed consistent through the day, and volunteers worked with enthusiasm to keep things moving. A few highlights for me were seeing parents working with their children to help serve and seeing warm drinks brought to people in line as they patiently waited. We had the ability this year to go over and above basic winterization for numerous people because of generous donors and sponsors. A proud moment for me was seeing two of my boys leading teams of volunteers, not because they had the most knowledge or experience, but because they had volunteered at this

event so many times that they knew how to manage the workflow. One person said they felt they were “seen” and that they mattered, because we cared enough to listen to their story and help them, pray with them and care for them. I know every person who came in was “seen” and I pray that they know their significance. I hope they felt a little bit lighter and more loved after they left with a safer vehicle. Holding this event every year would not be possible without the volunteers, donors and sponsors, so I extend a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of them. Together, we were able to help 192 families with their vehicles. Please show your support to these fine businesses where you can for their support of this year’s event: Fair Energy, Pat’s Auto Supply, Resource Purchasing & Supply, Transport Tire Ltd. Grande Prairie, PrairieCoast Equipment, NAPA Auto Parts, Petro-Canada, ACCU TECH Auto Repair Center, Grande Prairie Alliance Church, Northern Horizon Newspaper, 96.3 Reach FM, Big Country 93.1 FM Grande Prairie.

over 2022 numbers, which suggests little retention in the U.S. “Margins at U.S. feedlots are still favourable. However, as feeder supplies are anticipated to tighten into 2024, producers will look to cheaper feed costs for relief,” says Boyda. For the week ending Sept. 30, Sterling Marketing Inc. has estimated feedlot margins at just under US$300 per head and packer margins at a loss of just over $88 per head. “Negative packer margins were expected to slow slaughter rates into the fourth quarter of 2023. However, the prospect of improved cutout values could help maintain inventory levels. U.S. cutout values are currently being supported by seasonal demand and have moved higher to $304.12 per hundredweight on U.S. Choice and $277.48 per hundredweight on U.S. Select.” On Oct. 13, Canfax released its Cattle on Feed report for Oct. 1 cattle numbers. Cattle feeders in Alberta and Saskatchewan reported 921,390 head, up four per cent from 2022. Placements in September 2023 were up two per cent over last year, driven by a greater than 16 per cent increase in heifer placement. Fed cattle market-

ings during September were down 12 per cent over 2022. “Signs point to tighter fed supplies and moisture conditions remain the main obstacle to growth in both Alberta and the major cattle producing states,” says Boyda. “Alberta’s recently announced drought relief program (CanadaAlberta Drought Livestock Assistance program) will help strengthen resilience in the sector and hopefully stabilize the cow herd. Producers do recognize that any rebuilding of the herd will be a lengthy process.”
