ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, THE FOOD SECTOR AND THE CONSUMER By Agri-News

A

rtificial intelligence use in the retail and service sectors has created opportunities as well as challenges, says Jeewani Fernando, provincial consumer market analyst with the Alberta government. “Retail experts think AI is going to be a huge disruptor in the grocery business. Research indicates most grocery industry executives agree that AI will revolutionize information sharing and interacting with customers.” Fernando says the grocery industry uses AI in a number of ways, including: • Pricing and promotion: There are AI-driven applications that use historical data to simulate the future and find the optimal price and product mix to grow retails sales. • Business and supply chain optimization: AI can help wholesalers and retailers examine demand and supply to arrange deliveries at the best times and keep the right products on shelves. • Cashier-free payments: With AI in point-of-sale applications, cashier-less grocery stores are becoming mainstream. “AI is also quickly becoming integral to restaurant operations, from streamlining processes to enhancing the customer experience,” says Fernando. “For example, AI is being used to automate a number of simple and routine tasks in restaurants, which helps cut costs. By embracing AI’s ability to perform these tasks, restaurants can free up employees to do what they do best, which is focusing on guests.

“And AI-based marketing applications can supercharge a restaurant’s efforts to identify new customers and send targeted promotions that translate into business transactions.” A recent study by Dalhousie University gauged consumer awareness of AI use within the food industry. Among the findings: • When asked if they were aware of the use of AI in the food industry, 37.9 per cent of Canadians had never heard of it being used. • When asked if they were worried about AI use in the grocery or food service industries, 26.5 per cent of respondents said they were worried about the potential negative impact on jobs. • When asked about the use of AI for personalized recommendations for groceries or restaurant menu items, 23.4 per cent of respondents thought it was a good idea. • The survey revealed Canadian consumers do not want to pay more for food when AI is used. “Grocers and food service operators are benefiting from using AI-based applications and technologies in their operations, which allow them to deliver more personal, affordable and sustainable experiences for their customers,” says Fernando. “The food industry needs to use AI to meet evolving consumer preferences, behaviours and demands, but it is essential for the food industry to build consumer trust in AI use through ethical practices and transparency.”

Tomorrow is happening right now. Tomorrow is on.

FEED BARLEY PRICES MODERATE Feed barley prices have been slipping lower despite dry conditions across much of Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan By Agri-News

B

arley is the feed grain of choice for most Alberta cattle feeders,” says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with the Alberta government. “Other feed grains are used, but if available and price competitive, barley is the major ingredient in cattle finishing rations. Of course, other animals also are fed significant volumes of barley.” Barley prices rose to record highs in June 2022 following the 2021 drought, retreated during the improved growing conditions of 2022, then rose in late 2022 with the early and cold start to last winter. Feed barley prices have been slipping lower despite dry conditions across much of Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan. “There are a number of factors which have contributed to the price moderation of feed barley,” says Blue. “During recent years when barley was in relatively short supply and prices rose to those record levels, livestock feeders sought lower cost rations. Milling wheat was even selling as feed wheat to meet feed demand. “Oats and other feedgrains were also substituted for part of rations. Unit trains of imported U.S. corn became more common in the Lethbridge area as logistic challenges of those imports were overcome. Feeding imported corn has become common when price competitive.” In 2022, Australia produced a record grain crop. Then, during 2023, China relaxed its restrictive import tariffs against Australian products that began in 2020 during the early pandemic

period. While Australia was unable to compete with Canada for crop sales to China, Canadian crop exports to China rose, further tightening Canada’s domestic supplies. However, Blue says that Canadian advantage now gone and Canadian barley exports to early November total just 592,000 tonnes, compared to 816,000 tonnes at this time last year, and 970,000 tonnes in November 2021. “Positives for the barley price outlook are that 2023 Canadian barley production was limited by a reduced acreage and lack of moisture,” says Blue. Statistics Canada estimates the 2023 average barley yield at 55 bushels/ acre compared to last year’s 70. Some post-harvest yield reports came in better than mid-summer expectations, but total Canadian barley supplies are significantly lower than in the last crop year. “The shortage of hay for cattle feeding may lead to more straw-grain rations, with barley, oats and pellets the most likely concentrate source. Barley prices have dropped, becoming more competitive with world prices, increasing the prospects of improved barley exports as the crop year progresses. Also, malting barley demand remains firm. “Meanwhile, the cost of imported U.S. corn is a major factor for feed barley prices, keeping in mind that some feeders prefer feeding barley, even at a premium price to corn,” says Blue. “Traditional advice applies to barley marketing this crop year. Know your product, consider your cash flow needs, follow the market situation, and shop widely for the best, financially secure farm gate price.”

REBUILDING ALBERTA’S CATTLE HERD

Even with record high cattle prices and strong demand for beef, producers have not responded with herd expansion. By Agri-News

T

he proportion of female cattle slaughter relative to total cattle slaughter has increased,” says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government. “A greater share of females going to slaughter makes it more difficult to rebuild the herd.” Over the last decade, Western Canada female slaughter represented 47.7 per cent of the total cattle slaughtered. The 10-year average share of heifer to total cattle slaughter was 32.7 per cent. Year-to-date (January to end of October) female cattle slaughter estimates are at 49 per cent, with heifers representing 34.3 per cent of the total. The increase in share of female slaughter has increased from the 2020 low of 44.4 per cent. “Even with record high cattle prices and the strong demand for beef, producers have not responded with herd expansion,” says Boyda. “Producer restraint is attributed to concerns of ris-

ing input costs and risk of another year of dry conditions. Forecasts by Art Douglas, weather forecaster from Creighton University in the U.S., call for a short and sharp El Nino that could end in May 2024. The peak of its intensity will be the January to March period of 2024.” Multi-year drought impacts are cumulative and can result in land degradation, more wildfires, heatwaves, water scarcity, vegetation loss and reduction in livestock and crop productivity. Persistent drought also makes it difficult to stabilize the cattle herd. “A closer look at the heifer placement decisions on cattle feeding operations over the last three years reveals a seasonal pattern but also a year-over-year increase. The greatest share of monthly heifer placement relative to total feeder placements was in June 2023 at 53.5 per cent followed by September 2023 at 47 per cent. Signs point to a return to seasonal share toward the end of 2023.” The USDA November Cattle on Feed report showed inventory estimates of 11.931 million head on feed, two per cent

Source: USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service and Canfax

higher than November 2022 but within expectations. The report estimates October placements at 3.8 per cent larger than a year ago, while fed cattle marketed in October were 2.5 per cent lower than last year. USDA reported increases in placements over the last three months. The lower marketings may lower feedlot margins, but Boyda says 2023 is expected to see overall good margin returns. Canfax’s Cattle on Feed report for

Nov. 1 cattle numbers in Alberta and Saskatchewan estimate 1.099 million head, up three per cent from 2022. Placements in October were down three per cent from last year. Fed cattle marketings during October were down one per cent from 2022. “With rain comes hope,” says Boyda. “Should prices continue to support the prospect of recovery, and moisture arrive at the right time in spring 2024, there can be hope for the cattle herd to begin its rebuild.”

s the holiday season approaches, be mindful of potential hazards that can affect the health of cherished pets. The holidays bring joy but they also introduce unique risks that can land feline and canine friends in the emergency room. There is greater chance of foreign bodies, pancreatitis, toxic ingestion and feline lower urinary tract disease or blockages, so be aware of the signs that demand immediate attention. Foreign Bodies: The holidays bring the allure of new decorations, toys and foods that can be irresistible to pets, especially dogs who love to get into everything. Signs that your pet may

iting these signs after eating rich human food, seek veterinary attention. It might require overnight hospitalization and IV fluids to make your pooch feel better and prevent further complications. Toxic Ingestion: Holidays introduce a host of potential toxins that can be deadly for pets. These include chocolate, alcohol and the artificial sweetener called xylitol. Symptoms can vary but watch for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, seizures or sudden behaviour changes. Don’t wait if you know your pet has eaten something potentially dangerous. Contact the veterinary emergency immediately because it may not be too late to remove the toxin from the pet’s system without further damage. Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease or Urinary Blockage: Cats are sensitive creatures and stress is a big factor that can cause urinary tract disease. New people in the house, new pets, decorations or furniture moved to make room for a Christmas tree are all stressors that can bring about this condition. Signs include straining to urinate, urinating small amounts, blood in urine, vocalizing while in the litterbox or frequent trips to the litterbox. If it gets so far that your cat is not able to pass urine, it quickly becomes life-threatening and warrants an emergency visit. The holiday season is a time for joy and togetherness, but it is crucial to prioritize the well-being of pets. Stay vigilant so you can ensure a safe and happy holiday all. If you suspect an emergency, do not hesitate to contact a veterinarian or the nearest vet clinic.

ALBERTA AGRI-FOOD BUSINESSES GET BOOST By Alberta Agri-News

A

cultural infrastructure diversifies our economy, creates high-quality jobs and helps Alberta’s food companies and farmers expand and pursue new business opportunities,” said infrastructure minister Pete Guthrie. Pre-renovation, the area was able to support seven businesses. With renovations completed, up to nine companies can now lease a food processing suite and access product development support, business services and shared staff amenities. Businesses typically lease the suites for three to five years, after which they graduate to their own processing facility. Food processing companies can get more information about the suites and lease application online. “We’ve taken Groundswell from zero to fully operational with the support we’ve received from the business development and food science and safety teams at the business incubator,” said Brandon Markiw,

lberta’s agriculture industry accounted for more than $16.2 billion in exports in 2022. The province’s agri-food processing industry is growing, with food manufacturing sales reaching a record $22.7 billion in 2022, more than 20 per cent of total provincial manufacturing sales. The provincial government wants industry growth to continue so it is expanding the Leduc food centre’s Agrivalue Processing Business Incubator by 2,300 square metres. This expansion will allow more food processing companies to grow their business. “Alberta’s food industry is known for its affordable, high-quality products that are helping to feed the world. This expansion is a great step in helping Alberta’s agri-food sector continue to grow. When our agri-food industry thrives, it drives innovation and boosts Alberta’s economy,” said RJ Sigurdson, minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, in a Dec. 4 announcement. One of two facilities in the Leduc food centre, the incubator helps small businesses prepare products for sale within Canada and around the world by providing them with the tools to meet federal food regulation requirements. Since it was established in 2007, the incubator has helped small businesses produce a variety of value-added food products for retail, wholesale, hospitality and food service markets. These products range from dumplings to baked goods and fully cooked meat items. “This expansion shows our government’s commitment to supporting economic growth. Investing in agri-

Photo credit: https://www.cargohandbook.com/Pollard_Pellets (Reprinted from Dec 1, 2021) This fall, hay, grain, and silage supplies are limited for many farms and ranches. Generally, extra energy and protein are needed to supplement low quality hay or straw-grain based rations. Grain pellets are an option. However, what should be considered before purchasing a grain screening pellet.

1) What does the pellet contain? There are 3 distinct types of screening pellets. By-products from the flour and brewing industry, along with grain or pulse screenings are commonly found in pellets. They can also contain chaff, small weed seeds, and dust. The grain and by-products are processed through a hammer mill before being pelleted. The only way to know what is contained in the load is to obtain a batch scale sheet.

The current cattle market is strong and looks to stay that way for the fall season. Jennings Martin Cattle Buying will be there for you and your operations as you make those critical fall marketing decisions; including selling forward for winter 2023 and spring 2024. Jennings’ facility in La Glace will be open weekly starting the end of August to buy your bulls, cows and calves saving you the need for shipping to local and southern markets.

2) Potential for weed contamination Material is commonly ground through a 1/8 inch screen before being pelleted. Pressure, steam, and temperature are used to form the pellet. Larger weed seeds such as wild oats are broken and do not germinate. It is not likely, but some smaller “hard” seeds can pass through undamaged and may germinate later. Be mindful if the pellets are fed in a field and where the manure is spread. 3) Presence of ergot There is no way to determine if ergot is present by visual means. All material is ground, and it is impossible to find whole kernels. One of the first symptoms of ergot contamination is a reduction in feed intake within three to four days of introducing the pellet. 4) Energy density Depending on the pellet, energy content can be higher than average quality hay (60% TDN); but not equal to barley grain (83% TDN). Usually, the energy is somewhere between these two values, but it all depends on what is in the pellet. If there are significant amounts of canola seeds or weed seeds that have a high oil content; energy values increase. If it is mainly canola pods and chaff; energy density decreases. It is difficult to obtain an accurate energy estimate.

NOW ON FACEBOOK

5) Supplemental minerals, vitamins and ionophores Adding these ingredients at the mill when the pellet is made simplifies feeding on farm. Instead of hand adding 3 or more products to the ration, they can all be in the pellet.

Check for our Weekly Updates

6) Price The least expensive product is not necessarily the best deal. If the pellet consists mainly of low-grade screenings, the energy density can be low. The inclusion of minerals, vitamins and an ionophore increases the value. Compare the cost of the pellet to a grain mixture that supplies the same amount of nutrients to determine if it is a good purchase.

partnership with Farm Credit Canada’s Sustainability Incentive Program is expected to complement the Marginal Areas Program on the Prairies organized by Ducks Unlimited Canada. DUC announced the partnership Nov. 15. Producers who participate in the Marginal Areas Program in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are incentivized to convert unproductive cropland into a more biodiverse state by planting perennial forage. “Producers who are taking advantage of our Marginal Areas Program are already having success turning land that isn’t as productive as they would like into habitat that offers additional benefits,” said Kristine Tapley, national lead for sustainable agriculture at DUC. “We are proud to partner with FCC to offer even more of an incentive for producers to consider what works best for their operations and allow them to maximize the full potential of their land.” The Marginal Areas Program targets areas that are unproductive due to poor drainage, soil conditions, periodic flooding, inaccessibility or salinity. DUC offers an incentive for participation through a 10-year agreement, which assists producers with the costs of establishing perennials and helps alleviate the financial burden associated with land management. In addition to the DUC payment, FCC customers who are participating in the Marginal Areas Program can receive an incentive payment based on a percentage of their total owing with FCC, capped at a maximum payment of $2,000 or $50 per acre of enrolled acres. “Canadian grasslands are some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. This incentive program is an opportunity for producers to provide natural habitats for wildlife and enhance biodiversity responsibly,” said Curtis Grainger, FCC director of sustainability programs. “We hope to encourage seeding marginal areas that are unproductive to perennials, helping to improve profitability, pollinator habitat and act as buffer zones.” By sustainably managing areas with unproductive cropland, producers are paid for environmental enhancements, which can improve biodiversity while offering a solution to land management challenges.

Your Home. Your Future. Your Plan. WHAT’S GOING ON?

We are developing our first Regional Growth Strategy (RGS) for the region. It’s a long-range, high-level plan that will help us better understand and prepare for the potential changes we can expect over the next 20-years with a growing population, new service demands, the regional economy, and a changing climate.

KICK-OFF SURVEY!

What are your priorities for the Peace Region over the next 20 years? There are 5 questions that should take about 5 to 10 minutes to complete. • Scan the QR code to complete the survey online. • Paper copies are available at PRRD head office in Dawson Creek (1981 Alaska Avenue) or the Fort St. John branch office (9505 - 100 Street). They can also be picked up and dropped off at municipal offices in Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, Taylor, Chetwynd, Hudson’s Hope, Tumbler Ridge, and Pouce Coupe. WHAT'S THE TIMELINE? The development of our RGS is a multi-year project that started in August 2023 and will be completed in May 2025.

MORE VETS FUNDED IN ALBERTA By Alberta Agri-News

T

he Alberta government is investing an additional $10 million, for a total of $68.5 million, to support construction of the new Veterinary Learning Commons building at the University of Calgary’s Spy Hill Campus. Construction began Dec. 1 and is expected to be complete in the 2025-26 academic year. When complete, the number of veterinary medicine training seats will double to 100 from 50. “Alberta’s agriculture sector requires more veterinarians to ensure a healthy and sustainable future. This investment will give the University of Calgary the infrastructure and space required to continue supporting Alberta’s producers with highly skilled veterinarians,” said Rajan Sawhney, Alberta minister of Advanced Education. In the 2022 budget, the provincial government committed $58.5 million over three years in capital funding to expand capacity at the University of Calgary faculty of veterinary medicine to help address the critical shortage of large animal veterinarians. It also provided $8.4 million to support enrolment expansion in the veterinary medicine program. “We understand the seriousness of the veterinarian and veterinary technologist shortage, which is why we have provided funding and taken a wholegovernment approach to address the issue, said Alberta agriculture minister RJ Sigurdson.

“At the same time, we’re providing capital funding for renovations and lab equipment to further expand veterinary diagnostics so rural vets and producers have affordable and timely access to services to manage animal health and welfare.” As part of this new funding, $1.2 million will support equipment for molecular diagnostics for livestock and capital funding for renovations to the Clinical Skills Building and lab equipment, building on $560,000 in grants provided in 2022-23. This targeted funding supports the long-term

Horizon

goals of the faculty of veterinary medicine to provide a full-service diagnostics laboratory. This project is anticipated to lower operating costs for Alberta producers, as veterinarians are now sending samples out of province for testing. “We thank the provincial government for expanding its commitment to help UCalgary address a growing demand for more veterinary professionals and livestock diagnostic facilities,” said university president Ed McCauley. “These facilities will provide even more testing capacity to protect the health of animals and support Alberta’s animal production industry and public health, and when this building is complete, there will be double the number of new veterinarians graduating every year.” “We are immensely grateful for this crucial investment that will help address the pressing veterinary shortage and enhance diagnostic capabilities,” added veterinary medicine dean Renate Weller. “This investment reinforces our commitment to supporting our community, doubling veterinary medicine student capacity to ensure animal health, safety, and to safeguard against zoonotic diseases for the well-being of Alberta and beyond.” Dr. Natasha Kutryk, president of the Alberta Veterinary Medicine Association, said the funds will help the province address its shortage of veterinarians and ensure those vets have the needed lab diagnostic facilities to support their work.

CANADA, B.C. SUPPORT FARMERS WITH TECH ACCESS By B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Food

B

ritish Columbia farmers are being helped to access new technologies, such as robotic and automated equipment, farm-management software and digital sensors. The new B.C. On-Farm Technology Adoption Program will provide as much as $3 million over the next two years from the governments of Canada and British Columbia. “Farmers across Canada are working to meet the growing demand for their world-class products, but the cost of new on-farm technologies can be a barrier,” said Lawrence MacAulay, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “Today’s investment with British Columbia will provide them with the support they need to succeed and remain competitive, while strengthening the province’s agricultural sector.” The program will provide immediate assistance to B.C. farmers so they can use on-farm technologies to deal with labour shortages and operational cost increases. “We are listening to B.C. farmers and know that the cost to upgrade or introduce new technologies is a barrier for many, especially those with smaller farm operations,” said Pam

Alexis, B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture and Food. “With this new program, we’re providing support that can help farmers, now and in the future, so they can be more competitive, improve their bottom line and produce more food to feed our communities.” Applications for first year of the program opened Nov. 27 and will be accepted until Dec. 22, or until funds are fully allocated. Innovate BC, through the Integrated Marketplace initiative, will deliver the program. The program is funded through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year, $3.5-billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the competitiveness, innovation and resilience of the agriculture, agri-food and agriculture-based products sector. “Without innovation, there is no forward progress, said James Bergen, owner of Bergen Farms. “I have seen first-hand the benefits of adopting proven growing methods that are used elsewhere in the world. I am certain that this program will help growers in adopting innovative farming techniques that will improve efficiency, increase yields and allow for better management of resources.”

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Aron and everyone at Rhythm Auctions Ltd.

REMEMBER SAFE BURNING PRACTICES

A

lberta’s wildfire season officially ended Oct. 31 and a fire permit is no longer required for burning inside the Forest Protection Area. However, it’s important to keep safe burning practices top of mind, says Josee St-Onge, provincial information officer with Alberta Wildfire. “Fire safety matters year-round, even when there is snow on the ground.” Fires that are not properly extinguished can smoulder underground and re-ignite as a wildfire in the spring when conditions tend to be at their driest. Winter burning can also cause dangerous driving conditions when smoke lingers in the air. On particularly cold winter days, such as during an inversion when cooler air is trapped at the ground under a layer of warmer air, smoke can stay close to the ground and travel great distances. The ideal conditions for burning are typically days with average temperatures and minimal wind.

When burning during winter: • Refrain from burning when an inversion is in place or is forecasted. • Consult local municipalities and authorities on how to mitigate impacts when undertaking larger winter burning projects near communities or roads. • Actively manage burn projects to reduce total burning time and smoke impacts. • Burn debris in stages so that you can adapt to changing weather conditions and reduce smoke. • Ensure good snow cover in the burn area (more than 15 cm). “Any burning should closely follow our guidelines,” says St-Onge. “Check weather conditions and make sure you have the resources on hand to control the burn at all times. “After the burn, make sure the fire is out. Soak it, stir it, soak it again. It is safe when it is cool to the touch, but you should go back and check your burn site regularly after the burn to make sure it is completely extinguished.”
