BELOW-GROUND PESTS TO WATCH FOR IN TURF, FORAGE SEED STANDS

any turf and forage seed growers witnessed damage to fields around the Peace Region in the spring and fall of 2023. Spring surveys on affected fields showed relatively high numbers of cutworms and sod webworms. A number of creeping red fescue fields were destroyed, while others showed damaged areas throughout the field. This past fall there were reports of damage on creeping red fescue seed fields. A survey of those fields found cutworms, sod webworms, wireworms and weevil larvae in the crowns of creeping red fescue plants. These pests may continue to apply pressure on grass stands as the 2024 season begins.

For scouting any of these insects, start in areas where grass is exposed once the snow is melted. Cutworms, sod webworms and most larvae become active once soil temperatures are warmer than 4 C during the day. This is around the same temperature that fescue and other grasses start to grow. If damaged areas are noticeable, select plants on the edge of the damage. The below-ground feeders will move to living plants and don’t remain on grasses that are already dead. To start, inspect plants that are half brown and half green by pulling the plant with its roots. Take a container or bucket when scouting as weevil larvae are quite small and can sometimes go unnoticed. Damage from a distance will appear similar to winterkill when entering a field. Plants may be brown and show little to no green or new growth, resembling winterkill. Patches of no growth within an area of the field may also be a strong indicator. Do not scout in the dead patches, but at the perimeter of the dead patch where plants may still have some growth. This may first be the tops of hills or areas where snow has receded earlier and will direct have sunlight for long periods of the day.
INSECTS TO WATCH FOR Cutworm: Cutworms are the largest of the larvae found during scouting last fall, with the glassy cutworm (Apamea devastator) predominant. It is the most economically damaging of the four pests found and should be the

focus for creeping red fescue seed growers. Cutworms in general, are about 1.5 inches long (35-40 mm). There are a number of species that can affect grasses but generally the glassy cutworm is the focus. They tend to be subterranean and feed just below the surface, severing the blades from the paired roots. They are white with no hair on the body and have reddish-brown heads. Sod webworms: Sod webworms as a grass pest. They must have high numbers when compared to cutworms for significant damage to occur. Web-
The Northern Horizon, February 16, 2024 A3 worms tend to prune grass blades in the crown of the plant. They are about half the size (20 mm) of cutworms. Sod webworms can have multiple generations in each season, while cutworms will only have one generation per season. Both insects follow a similar lifecycle and share similar habitats, existing as larvae in the crown of the plant. In general, both overwinter as semimature larva and emerge in spring to feed and finish their lifecycle as pupae before becoming moths. Wireworm: Wireworm larvae are quite distinct compared to the other insects. They tend to be yellow–orange and vary in length (10-25 mm) depending on species. They are strictly subterranean and feed on the root system of a variety of grass and cereal plants. Weevil: Weevil larvae are significantly smaller than the larvae previously mentioned, between 3-10 mm in length. They are white with an orange to yellow cap and tend to curl in a ‘C’ shape and appear to have no legs. Within the plant, they can be found burrowed into the crown and surrounded by lots of grass and clipping debris.
CONTROL OPTIONS There are no economic thresholds for any of these pests in turf and grass seed or forage crops. Scouting in spring is highly recommended for any producers of turf seed, forage seed, hayfields or pastures. If concerned about crop status after scouting, visit the PRFSA website (www.peaceforageseed. ca) or contact one of the individuals below. T
he chair of the Alberta Pulse Growers Commission says new and experienced members of the board of directors aim to achieve the vision of pulses on every farm, on every plate. Shane Strydhorst of Neerlandia was re-elected as chair following the February annual general meeting. “I’m looking forward to continuing the great work this board has initiated to maximize opportunities for Alberta’s pulse farmers,” Strydhorst said. “The addition of a new director will bring fresh perspectives as we continue promoting and building upon the economic benefits of growing peas, beans, faba beans, lentils, chickpeas and soybeans, as well as the sustainability of our industry. We are also working hard to address root rot and other challenges for our growers.” Strydhorst will lead an executive committee that includes returning vicechair Peter Konstapel of Spirit River (Zone 4) and past-chair Robert Semeniuk (Zone 5). Michael Bury of Mannville joined the board as director-at-large (nonbean), replacing Bev Wieben of Fairview who became a Zone 4 director. APG’s 12-member board also includes directors Greg Stamp of Enchant and Will Muller of Bow Island in Zone 1, Kevin Auch of Carmangay and Peter Hoff of Gleichen in Zone 2, Chris Allam of Ardrossan in Zone 3, Scott Keller of New Norway in Zone 5, and director-at-large John Kolk of Picture Butte, who was re-elected to the position. Outgoing Zone 4 director Jerome Isaac was thanked for his contributions and years of service. The Alberta Pulse Growers Commission represents 5,400 growers of field pea, dry bean, lentil, chickpea, faba bean and soybean in Alberta. Farmers interested in getting involved as a zone advisor are asked to contact APG to learn more about what this entails.

Cow & her calf. Photo credit: Barry Yaremcio All living creatures and plants contain protein. Plants take in nitrogen to produce protein. Some animals, including cattle, consume plant material. During digestion of the forage, the plant protein is broken down into amino acids. Rumen bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and viruses rebuild the amino acids into proteins that are required by the animal.

Microbes that break down ingested feed use some of the amino acids (ammonia) as a food source for themselves. This is to keep the microbe populations high to digest the ingested feeds. If protein levels are low, microbial populations decline, digestion rates decrease, and feed intake is reduced.
Jennings Martin Cattle Buying would like to thank everyone for a very successful 2023 and we look forward to continue working with you as we move into 2024. We would like to assure all Peace Country cattle producers that we will continue to work hard to offer fair prices while providing a stress-free environment for both you and your cattle.
Protein is contained in every cell in the body. It is essential to build and maintain muscle, soft tissues, and blood. It is a part of antibodies needed for immune function. Plus, is part of biological functions needed to keep the body functioning properly.
Our facility in La Glace continues to remain open, buying all classes of bulls, cows, steers and heifers, saving you the need for shipping to local and southern markets.
A cow that is not receiving adequate protein during pregnancy (7% in mid pregnancy and 9% in late pregnancy on a dry basis) will decrease calf development in utero. Organs are smaller than normal. This reduces overall calf growth potential and mature size. The quantity and quality of colostrum is reduced if protein needs are not met, which results in the calf being more prone to diseases. After calving, the protein requirement increases to 11% on a dry basis. Lower milk quality and possibly volume, and repair of the reproductive system to be ready for the breeding season, are impacted by the deficiency. Small calves grow rapidly. Protein is essential to develop bones and muscles so they can frame out and grow properly. Milk is a good source of protein and requirements of the suckling calf are usually met. Once weaned, calves continue to require a high protein ration. A 450-pound calf requires approximately 14 to 15% protein (on a dry basis). High quality hay or silage along with grain is a good base for the ration.

Inadequate protein in cattle rations reduces animal performance and creates various growth and health problems. Supplementing protein when required is not an expense it is an investment in future returns be it pregnancy rates or pounds of calf for sale in the fall.

This customer got 54 mtph of drying with 2 DF22s in 2 separate locations, the 1st DF22 in Tisdale SK in 2020 and 2nd in Birch Hills, SK in 2021. The man with the shovel is not shovelling grain he is shovelling a soil Locally extended surge hopper bacteria pellets made from compost and manure. They extrude the material through a pellet machine then the pellets go into the Drier at 35% moisture and are dried down to 10% moisture so they will keep, but not down to 4 or 5% or it kills the bacteria, so accurate heat control is critical and the DF22 Dryer has that type of heat control.

lberta Canola acknowledged decades of farm leadership at its Jan. 24-25 annual meeting in Grande Prairie by establishing a new award named in honour of an industry champion. “Mr. Walter Paszkowski was a driving force in creating the Alberta Canola Producers Commission,” said Christine McKee, chair of the grower engagement committee and a farmer from Stirling, Alta. “The Walter Paszkowski Farm Leadership Award pays tribute to his legacy and dedication to canola, while emphasizing Alberta Canola’s unwavering commitment to fostering leadership and excellence
within the canola industry and within Alberta’s rural communities.” The new award aims to annually recognize and reward a deserving canola grower in Alberta with a $5,000 bursary to facilitate their participation in Farm Management Canada’s National Farm Leadership Program. Alberta Canola is developing the application and selection guidelines and the first intake is expected this fall. For further details and updates on the award, visit albertacanola.com.

AGRICULTURAL SOCIETIES RECOGNIZED FOR INITIATIVES
T
hree agricultural societies have been recognized by the Alberta government for their innovations and positive impact on their communities. Recipients of the 2023 Agricultural Society Innovation Award include KAC Agricultural Society, Stettler District Agricultural Society and La Crete Agricultural Society. In 2023, the KAC Agricultural Society partnered with a local school to obtain a hydroponic food modular system that was integrated into Altario School’s Agriculture Academy. Producing 500 to 600 plants weekly, this initiative addressed food supply chain challenges, providing the community with fresh and affordable produce year-round. The program also offered students hands-on learning opportunities, cultivating skills in entrepreneurship, agri-business, and innovation and technology in agriculture and research.

The Stettler District Agricultural Society pioneered the Community Kitchens program, contributing to the support of underserved residents. By offering its recently upgraded kitchen to the community at no cost, the program has become a catalyst for numerous new projects and opportunities for community groups, families and individuals. The Heritage Experimental Orchard initiative was established by the La Crete Agricultural Society to boost the variety and abundance of fruit trees in the northern region, bolstering food security and supporting health, economic growth and food stability in northern Alberta. Over time, the project evolved to encompass experimental and educational aspects, with the potential for future economic benefits to the region. Award recipients were presented with a recognition banner and framed certificate at the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies annual convention Feb. 2. “There were a number of excellent applications this year, making the final award selection very difficult,” says Susan Lacombe, program coordinator with the Alberta government. “Congratulations to all the applicants for this year’s award.” Other applicants had the following initiatives: • •
• • • •
Lac la Biche Agricultural Society for its Alberta Wife Carrying Championship; Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society for its Community Garden Pathway System Project; Stavely Agricultural Society for modifying its rink to host the 2023 Elks National Curling Championships; and Vulcan & District Agricultural Society for expanding the exhibition grounds to host more and larger events.
“This award allows us to work together to champion and celebrate the significant contributions that agricultural societies make, while inspiring others to take action,” says Lacombe. “Agricultural societies matter and this is one small way for us to say thank you for the critical work they do in building a stronger Alberta.”

“
rom the earliest I can remember I wanted a horse and a bicycle. Mother couldn’t get me a bicycle so I learned to ride on Dave Steinke’s bike. A lot of kids learned to ride as he was good to all of us,” said Haina Kirstien. “Mother finally did manage to get me a horse to ride to school. At first the horse would shy at a rabbit or a grasshopper or something and I’d fall off. As
time went on I learned to ride better — she couldn’t buck me off. Even when we tried to make her buck she wouldn’t. “Then I got some neighbour horses to break and I started riding steers at Teepee because Leslie Hoag would pay me 50¢ at the bucking gates to ride them. I found out that steers and cows always burn your bum on the downhill riding. “I got to riding bareback because it was easier on the backside but I could never, not too often anyway, make good rides. I always got disqualified. “First they held the Teepee Sports south on the McKenzie place, where I first rode cows and calves. The Races were held on a straight stretch. “George Hanson was the clown. I remember he had a lot of different outfits of clothes on and everytime he tried to walk the greasy pole and fell into the dam
he came out with a different outfit on. His last outfit was only a bra and panties. Haina was the clown later when the stampede was held on the present grounds. “I don’t know that I was so funny,” he said, “but I rode around on the back of an old sway-backed horse and made the kids laugh; the little children followed me around, but some of the bigger kids got throwing rocks and mud balls and grass. I didn’t like that much.” “In about 1938 I rode a little pony that belonged to Phillip Kline in the 14 Hands and Under pony race at Teepee. It was quite a snappy little horse and I didn’t ride race horses much. He wanted me to watch the horse at the start. I got into the rail position and the horn blew and the horses took off, my horse saw he was behind and bolted so hard I slid back on his backside and over the rump part, with my feet dangling by his tail. Somehow, I managed to stay on and pulled myself up slowly, until halfway around I was in riding position. I gave him the whip and came in second. If he hadn’t had had a decent start, he’d have placed first. “I could never stay in the saddle very good but I’d make a few dollars bareback riding. “Early in the ’40’s when I first tried saddle bronc riding at Teepee, I never had any cowboy boots, just leather shoes. I had to fasten my spurs on pretty good so they wouldn’t fall off. “I got bucked off but my foot slid through the stir-
Haina Kirstien and Pud McCausland taken in 1949. Both cowboys were annual contestants at Teepee.

rup and got stuck and I was flying around the arena like a kite. The outriders got in and got the horse into a corner and I got right side up in the saddle and got unhooked. People were scared I’d break my head. “I noticed that afternoon that people were giving me quite bad looks. It still didn’t dawn to my mind what was wrong, but later they told me not to ride again until I had cowboy boots on for safety. “I hardly ever got into the money, but I always tried. Riding against competition I seemed to lose my nerve and couldn’t qualify. I was bound to ride through. I did exhibition rides. Hardly a stampede went by that Haina wasn’t injured in some way. “I remember a time at Teepee I had a bareback ride coming out; a snappy bay horse. I got bucked off over its head. What I can remember was flying over its head just as the head came up and hit my jaw. I went sideways and was knocked ‘coo-coo.’ They poured water on my face, but I didn’t come to. Mother was frantic!” “They loaded me into a car. I was unconscious CONTINUED ON PAGE 36

“We hollered and hollered for Haina to let the circingle go, but he wouldn’t.” Bob Love added, “When Haina made his comeback, he rode a horse, clean across the arena and when he came to the far fence, he flew up high and came down hard, and cracked his head on the steel post and fell like a sack of potatoes. I thought that was the end of Haina for sure. But he got up, shook his head and said ‘That was a hard pole!’

until got halfway to Sexsmith then I woke up in the back seat with my head in Jimmy Rycroft’s lap. I opened my eyes and kind of looked at him.” “Where in hell are we going?” “Be quiet! Just rest a while and you’ll be all right,” replied Jimmy. “I dozed off until I heard Mother talking in the doctor’s office in Sexsmith. They took me right in and patched me up. I had five stitches along my jaw. I had a drink and went back to the grounds, but they wouldn’t let me ride again that year.” “That was a big bay horse with a blaze on its face that belonged to Henry Steinke. He worked that horse with another one all year, but boy could he buck at Stampede time! I think Henry sold him to the association finally.” “Jimmy Rycroft and I entered the Wild Cow Milking. I never did catch a cow, but Jimmy went in among the cows and milked one and we won some kind of a prize. I think Jimmy was home on leave then. “I remember getting bucked off a bareback horse and the circingle belonged to Kenny Moore, who has his own rigging. He had a smaller hand than me and my hand was too big for the hand hole. When I got bucked off and my hand stuck and the strap came with me. He was made because I broke it. “I never did turn out to be a rider — just trying and having a lot of fun. Sometimes in this racket you chicken out and sometimes you don’t. I quit riding when I got married. “I liked to hear the crowd holler for you to stay on. Nobby Clarke used to holler his heart out for me to ride whatever I was on. ‘Stay with him. Ride him Haina!’ I can still hear him yet!” “Haina Kirstien always put on a good show whatever he was doing. I remember in one race he had nothing else to hit his horse with, so he took off his shirt and used that to hit the horse,” laughed Harvey Bekkerus. “When Haina first started driving pony chariot he wore hockey shin pads and had big, long lines dragging. The crowd loved him,” stated Don McQuaig. Don Brown recalled “Haina used to circingle and we had this one old grey horse – boy he was mean. Anyway, Haina came out and he slid around to the side and couldn’t get back up and he wouldn’t let go. That horse kicked him with his hind feet and front feet both. I didn’t think he was going to make it.

AGCO LAUNCHES FARMERCORE TO BRING THE DEALER EXPERIENCE DIRECTLY TO THE FARM DULUTH, GA – Jan. 30, 2024
A
GCO (NYSE: AGCO), a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of agricultural machinery and precision ag technology, today announced the launch of FarmerCore, a transformative global initiative to deliver a next-generation farmer and dealer experience. The launch of the new end-to-end distribution model is a significant milestone in advancing AGCO’s Farmer-First strategy and solidifying its commitment to helping farmers across the globe become more profitable, productive and sustainable. FarmerCore revolutionizes sales and service using tools that put dealers in closer proximity – onsite and online – to farmers. From product research to inseason uptime, the program develops and integrates digital and physical elements across the purchasing
journey and product ownership lifecycle to create a leading on-farm offering. “AGCO’s strategy remains focused on putting the farmer at the center of everything we do,” said Eric Hansotia, Chairman, President and CEO of AGCO. “The FarmerCore initiative further solidifies our pledge to prioritize farmers, blending physical and digital experiences to build brand loyalty and deepen customer engagement. Ultimately, we’re going to bring our entire business to the farmer through digital tools, service trucks, local parts access and more in partnership with AGCO’s global dealer network.” FarmerCore is built on three pillars: the on-farm mindset, smart network coverage and digital engagement. The on-farm mindset positions dealers to meet customers’ needs at every stage of the ownership journey. Smart network coverage de-emphasizes the one-size-fits all outlet approach, moving toward a hub-and-spoke model that adds “light” retail outlets, service centers and parts-only locations. Digital engagement gives farmers 24/7 online access to sales and support, including online parts purchasing, dealer digital storefronts, online configurators and more. Many AGCO dealerships already deploy aspects of the FarmerCore program, including mobile service fleets, alternative format outlets (e.g., partsonly stores) and digital tools to enhance customer
support. In fact, the FarmerCore model has proven successful at the regional level through AgRevolution, an AGCO-owned, full-line agricultural equipment dealer serving farmers in Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana. “We provide farmers with an outstanding onfarm experience that spans the entire ownership journey,” said Stacy Anthony, CEO of AgRevolution. “Our farmer-first mentality, combined with implementing FarmerCore’s assets, enables greater engagement across our region and helps us deliver exceptional customer outcomes and value. I am excited at the unlimited potential this innovative, farmer-first model will deliver to AGCO’s dealer network and farmers around the world.” With FarmerCore, mobile assets bring buying and servicing to the farm. While dealership locations will continue to anchor farmer support in local communities, mobile and digital channels allow farmers to engage on their terms. FarmerCore will be implemented in close partnership with AGCO’s global dealer network and will become a leader in ag machinery support, across every aspect of the ownership lifecycle. The program launches globally this year in select North and South America dealer organizations, with continued expansion throughout 2024.

The Maples day-use area, located 1/2 km west of the bridge, has another playground and more hiking trails. The Manitoba maples mark the site of St. Saviours Mission to the Beaver Indians established in 1879. For hundreds of years, the valley has provided excellent fruits and vegetables which are now available at the Market Gardens which is located a short distance east of the campground. You can experience beautiful sunsets at Beatton Provincial Park located only a short distance northwest of the City of Fort St John and another 13km north of Highway 97. Beatton Provincial Park is located on the northeast shores of Charlie Lake and offers beautiful scenery, boat launch and 39 unserviced campsites with 33 of them reservable. Many people take to the water for a swim or enjoy the scenery along the hiking trails. Trail maps are posted at the trailhead and major junctions. When you get your boat on the water you are looking for the perfect fishing spot to catch Walleye, Northern Pike and Yellow Perch, the most popular species of Charlie Lake. This park is a year-round facility with swimming, fishing and hiking during the summer months and offers excellent winter recreation opportunities with over 15km of groomed cross-country skiing trails 795397
At Dunvegan Provincial Park and Historic Site there is plenty of green space to relax with family and friends and enjoy a picnic, get some exercise and experience what life was like for many early settlers. This is the site of one of Alberta’s earliest fur trading posts and missionary centres dating back to 1805. Archibald Norman MacLeod established a trading post naming it Fort Dunvegan after his family’s ancestral castle in Scotland. The park, located 26 km south of Fairview, normally has tours during the summer that include the 1867 St. Charles Mission Church, and the 1879 Hudson’s Bay Company Factor’s House. A ferry was used to cross the Peace River until 1960 when the longest suspension bridge in Alberta was built. Dunvegan Provincial Park has 65 campsites, with electrial hook-ups. Reservable May 18-Oct 9. There is a large day use and picnic area that includes shelter, firepits and playground.

2023 FARM INPUT PRICE REVIEW Alberta Agri-News
A
gri-businesses continually adapt to changing input prices, especially during periods of volatility, high inflation and supply chain issues,” says Azam Nikzad, market analyst/co-ordinating researcher with the Alberta government. “Farm input costs represent an upfront purchase necessary for production and encompass a range of items including fertilizer, chemical, seed and feed. Rising farm input prices are concerning as they contribute to higher farm operating expenses.” According to Statistics Canada, farm operating expenses increased by 20 per cent in 2022 compared to 2021 and the farm input price index for Alberta is up 9.6 per cent in the third quarter of 2023 compared to third quarter in 2022. To better understand farm input price trends in Alberta, the analysis below compares the annual percentage change in yearly averages for select farm inputs in 2023 versus 2022. The most significant upward shifts were observed • Firearms & Gun Maintenance • • Knives and Hunting Supplies • • Ammunition & Reloading • • Fishing Rods, Reels & Acces • • Camping Equip & Clothing •

in the price of electricity, followed by oil for diesel engines, which rose by 44.6 per cent and 27.6 per cent, respectively. Purple gasoline, diesel fuel, propane and farm natural gas prices decreased by an average of 23.1 per cent, primarily driven by lower global natural gas and crude oil markets. Fertilizer showed an average price decrease of 18.2 per cent, with the most significant decline observed for urea, which was down 29.5 per cent. Farm machinery prices increased 14.4 per cent on average, whereas machinery parts and repairs experienced an average uptick of 5.2 per cent. Seed prices were up on average 5.6 per cent and feed prices increased 1.1 per cent, with the most notable increase seen in the price of swine supplement at 17.9 per cent. Feed oats experienced the largest decrease at 31.3 per cent. In terms of crop chemicals and livestock drugs, the highest rise was observed for vitamin ADE (up 25.9 per cent) and the most significant decrease was for Roundup (down 19.6 per cent). Building supplies saw an average decrease of 1.9 per cent, with the largest decline noted for lumber, followed by sheathing prices. “The farm input market has faced many challenges in recent years, from logistical hurdles and labour market disruptions to interruptions in the production of base inputs for manufacturing, congested delivery channels, rising wages, global supply concerns and escalating transportation costs,” says Nikzad. “This unprecedented confluence of challenges had tangible impacts on the escalation of farm input prices.” For instance, fertilizer and fuel prices saw a surge
Horizon
in October 2021, which was then intensified by the Ukraine-Russia conflict in February 2022. Russia is the major exporter of both fuel and fertilizer. The conflict escalation increased the level of uncertainty around supply and demand conditions and led to a spike in prices. Inflation pressure in the economy is another factor that can push up farm input prices. The Centre for Commercial Agriculture notes a strong correlation between changes to the inflation rate and prices for labour and machinery and other farm inputs. Inflation can result from increased demand that surpasses an economy’s capacity to produce, or from geopolitical risks, rising production costs, labour shortages, wage increases and supply chain challenges. Global fertilizer, chemical and other manufacturers have adapted to disruptions and increased the level of resilience across their respective supply chains. Efforts were helped by lower costs for raw materials (in the case of chemicals) and lower natural gas prices. Natural gas is a key input for nitrogen-based fertilizers, which has in turn contributed to the notable decline in fertilizer prices. “There is a diversity of perspectives on where farm input prices could go in 2024,” says Nikzad. “Some foresee the potential for further increase due to continued global uncertainty, the energy transition, ongoing supply constraints and improved Chinese demand. Others take a more optimistic view and expect farm input prices to moderate. Much will depend on energy prices and global demand for farm inputs.”
