Farm and acreage preparedness for wildfires Wildfires are a hazard that can spring up quickly and cause major devastation to your farm or acreage. While you will not likely be able to stop a full-blown wildfire on your own; there are a few steps that you can take to minimize the risk and reduce the potential damage to your family, property and animals. 1. Know the Risks Is your property located in or next to a forested area? Does your land have large dry grasslands nearby? Is it practical to evacuate your animals should the need arise? Recently in Alberta, wildfires in both of these situations have resulted in farm buildings and animals being lost from fires that started nearby and were then blown by winds onto neighbouring farms and acreages. So watch out for high fire risk conditions: a. Dry conditions, especially in the spring before the grass and leaves come out. But also later in the summer as the weather dries things out. b. Windy days, because the high winds increase the fire risk in addition to helping any fire that does get started move quickly through the forest or grassland.
2. Make a Plan What are you going to do should a fire/nearby fire threaten your farm or acreage? There are three main options, but depending on the size of your farm some of them may not be realistic (the attached page has more details on each of these options): a. Shelter in Place – soak down the area around your yard and create a fire break around your yard and animals. b. Plan to Evacuate – with sufficient time and preparation you could evacuate your family and animals to a safe area until the risk is gone. c. Release your animals – If you have little or no warning, you can open your gates/ doors to give your animals a chance to find safety on their own while you evacuate yourself and your family. 3. Be Prepared Here are a few examples of things that you can do to be better prepared to deal with any fire risks that you may face. • FireSmart your yard – see the homeowners FireSmart manual at http:// wildfire.alberta.ca/fire-smart/ documents/FireSmartHomeOwnersManualJun2015.pdf

• Have a fire extinguisher, tools and water available to use for fighting any small fires that start in your yard. • Make sure that everyone who lives/works on your farm knows what to do should a fire threaten your place • Identify a source of water that can be used as an emergency water supply for fire fighters or as a place you can chase you animals to if you must evacuate. • Follow the instructions of your municipality, first responders or Wildland fire fighters when faced with an emergency situation.

On Alberta’s GMO alfalfa resolution - part III HEATHER KERSCHBAUMER President, Forage Seed Canada
On March 15, a resolution (16-10S) to keep GMO alfalfa out of Alberta until market acceptance was voted on and passed by Alberta’s rural councillors. There are many who are trying to understand the whole story. What’s this all about?
PART 3 of 3 GMO/GE alfalfa. Are there other countries who might use this as a trade barrier? Is it a political decision by other parts of the world? Perhaps. Not really a great answer, but it is possible. I don’t think we can dispute that there are other GE crops being exported. It’s a known fact. However, and this

is really important, so pay attention: If our international customers say they don’t want GE alfalfa at this time, in any business plan I’ve ever read, it seems to me it says, “the customer is always right”! Whether science says we are right or wrong, whether our country insists we know best, whether it is declared safe, I guess we either satisfy our customers, or they buy from someone else. And so far they still can. Then there’s the accountability issue. Who is responsible when GE alfalfa traits start showing up where they’re not supposed to be? Who is liable? What happens when others possibly lose their livelihood, like the organic guy down the road? Or the
hay seller? Or the seed grower? Who do we expect? The company who produced this product? Maybe the company who sold us the seed? Nope. It will be us – anybody who buys it, who plants it, who grows it. We have to sign a contract that says so. We accept that responsibility to control it. And when I sell my land, that responsibility will go with the land – yikes! So what if a couple farmers still want to grow this stuff – why can’t everyone coexist – be happy – live and let live? Why not make some special areas to give it a try? They’re making it work it in the States, we keep hearing. They have “grower oppor-

tunity zones” (GOZs) where GE alfalfa is allowed. And is it working? Nope. Contamination is showing up in many places outside the GOZs. Some wild alfalfa is testing positive. Not much of a surprise! So why not learn by their experiences? Talk to them, ask their opinions. Find out how to make it work. Seems logical, so I did. Two years ago. I asked, not one or two, but a room full of farmers at a meeting in Las Vegas. Not too many answers. But after, during coffee, during lunch, in the evening, when it was one-on-one (actually two-on-two, since we had spouses with us) they came and talked. They talked, we listened. They told us how it’s affecting their prices and contracts – in a negative way. “Don’t bring it to Canada”, they told us. “Keep it out as long as you can. If you can’t keep it out of Canada, keep it out of the West. If you can’t keep it out of the West, keep it out of Alberta. If you can’t keep it out of Alberta, keep it out of your area. Coexistence isn’t working.” We decided to investigate further. We went to the Imperial Valley of California – the only designated GE alfalfa free area in the US. They grow vegetables – lots of them. And alfalfa hay – huge quantities of pristine alfalfa hay, destined for markets that
don’t allow GE alfalfa. They didn’t want to lose that. So we know keeping it out is possible…. Another topic that most of us don’t even consider – glyphosate herbicide resistance. Weeds that don’t die when we spray with glyphosate. This happens when we use the same chemical over and over – Roundup. What will likely happen if we add alfalfa to the list of crops to spray? Faster resistance and more weeds that don’t die! Not only that, I haven’t even touched on the fact that our organic industry has been growing by double digit percentages each year. GE alfalfa would be a huge handicap in many ways for organic farmers. So I’m very proud as an Albertan to say that someone in this province is listening. Our counties and municipal districts in Alberta have made a statement by passing this resolution – to do some due diligence and investigate the impact GE alfalfa will have – before we let this genie out of the bottle. And I thank them very much! Oh, and by the way, I know other parts of Canada are watching. Written and submitted by Heather Kerschbaumer, farmer from Northern Alberta.

COTILLION AREA The forest fire that raged in Cotillion before 1952 had left standing only a few bluffs of trees. The rolling hills gave way to the coulees and canyons of the Pouce and Peace Rivers. The poplars were only a couple of feet high and one
could see for miles in any direction. Land clearing consisted of picking up half-burned logs and sticks, then plowing the small saplings under. The only way into the area was a trail north of Banser’s through the Teepee, which hugged the coulee past Leo Lefebvre’s to Rushfeldt’s, then north again on a partial seismic road. In 1952 the only inhabitants of the area were the Arnold Ferguson and Bert Peters families.

After producers have a cow, Earls back on Canadian beef. Kind of. Earls is pledging to bring back Alberta beef according to the CBC, after the Canadian Restaurant chain announced previously it was going to be supplied by US suppliers specializing in humanely slaughter and raised cattle. “We made a mistake,” told Earls president Mo Jessa to CBC earlier
this month. When Earls announced it was going to source it’s beef from Kansas, Canadian beef groups leapt into action. The Alberta Beef Producers noted last week the move is a good first step toward putting Canadian and Alberta beef back on their
menus. Chair Bob Lowe called it a slap in the face. Rich Smith, executive director, said he was pleased to hear Canadian beef was back on Earl’s plate, calling it a positive message to Alberta cattle and beef producers. Murray Mandryk in Yorkton
This Week noted the moves added up to restaurant chains trying to differentiate themselves from competitors. “It also preys on city people’s lack of knowledge of rural agriculture,” he said.
Bonanza Ag Society Farm Safety day a hit with youth
More than 70 youth learned about rural and on-farm safety during a farm safety day hosted by the Bonanza Ag Society in April. Leanna Shore with the Ag Society said the day was a full one with safety, snacks, kiddie bags and safety book for kids. “We had things like tractors and ATVs on hand for the kids as well as stations on powerlines and how to not suffocating in grain. They got to see some practical applications like a fire extinguisher. Peace Wapiti School Trustees were on hand as well were representatives of Saddle Hill County. Shore says the event goes every two years. “We’d like to see more public buy-in in future years for sure.” July 15 to 17 marks the Bonanza Ag Society’s summer fair.

High and Wild - some tips of the trail for the saddle Every summer, The Horse Ranch takes people from around the world back into the mountains on a learning/adventure holiday. We start from the ranch, drive 200 miles north on the Alaska Highway to a grassy airstrip where we board a bush plane and fly 80 miles from the nearest road to our host lodge. Each time we go to High and Wild, it seems I have to add to my list of trail tips for the folks. Since I have been going to and working in these mountains since I was 17, I have discovered that what is common sense to me is not common sense to others. So here are some of the trail tips I share each year. Trail Tip No. 1: People often say “I can’t get on without a mounting block”. So they won’t come on the trip or, for that matter, they won’t ride anywhere unless there is a plastic thing with steps available. Anywhere you ride, and the rougher the country the better, there are mounting blocks available for getting on. Trail Tip No. 2: When you get on or off, do it on the high side of the horse. There are two sides to a horse and you should be able to get on or off from either side. If your horse isn’t used to being mounted from the right side then turn him around. Trail Tip No. 3: If it looks like your leg is going to hit a tree, push
on the tree. It is the easiest way to move your horse over. Or, lift your knee to the saddle horn. You want to practice that before you get to a tree. Trail Tip No. 4: When you’re leading a horse on the trail, be careful not to bump or tighten the lead line unless you want him to follow right then. Trail Tip No. 5: We often leave our horses to climb a mountain or go look at a waterfall, so it’s important to know how to tie your horse to a tree. It is best to tie horses high above the height of their eye. Some folks tie low and the horse gets his foot over the rope. Trail Tip No. 6: Don’t drop or throw your coat, rain gear, lunch at the horse’s feet because it is probably going to scare them unless they are really trained well. If you do this and the horse is tied, you will probably cause the horse to pull back. Which brings me to another point. Trail Tip No. 7: Keep your saddle centered on the horse. If it gets to far off to one side it will roll and so will you. A saddle with a loose cinch or no cinch at all won’t roll unless you get it off to one side. If it doesn’t roll under the horse’s belly, it can really hurt their withers and sore the horse. When riding hills, your saddle will shift which means you should adjust it as often as necessary.
On a fat or fish belly horse, your saddle will likely need adjusting from time to time.
SADDLE CANADA Photo
On a fat or fish belly horse, even on flat ground, your saddle will likely need adjusting from time to time. This keeps them from getting cinch sores also. Don’t think you’re going to leave on your ride and never look at your saddle until you get back to the tack shed. If you’re in the hills and need to adjust your saddle, remember get off and do it from the high side. Turn the horse so you can use the slope to help you slide your saddle back into position. Undo your back cinch first. These are some of the more important pre-trip tips I go over before hitting the trail. I could finish, I guess, with another funny (to me) but important tip Trail Tip No. 8: Stay within one horse length of the rider in front of you. Keep up and if you can keep your eye on the leader of your group, the person that knows where he’s going, that’s even bet-
ter. With a group of people riding through the mountains, you can’t see back at times more than 4 or 5 horses. I know it all sounds like common sense but it happens every year and often even after explaining the dos and don’ts. It all makes for funny stories but there is always potential for injuries so think, plan and listen to the trail boss. Let’s hit the trail, Glenn Stewart If you are interested in our High and Wild trip feel free to contact the office; info@thehorseranch.com. Also Glenn offers year round educational horsemanship programs at his facility near Fort Saint John, BC and is available to travel and conduct clinics. “... And then there were none.” Antibiotics, that is
Hopefully this will not happen in our generation. Or the next. Or ever. However, a word that is starting to become familiar to many families is ‘superbug.’ You may be able to name a relative who’s been in the hospital, contracted a bacterial infection of some sort, and then had an extremely difficult time recovering from it. Or not recovered from it. Antibiotics have been around for about 100 years. That’s all. They’ve been miracle cures, having eliminated ‘gangrene’ and ‘tuberculosis’ from household discussions, and having been generally saving lives left, right, and center. But not with such zest anymore. The superbug titles are beginning to line the paper (and online newsfeed) headlines. Bacteria divide (reproduce) quickly, the average time being 15-20 minutes. That means one bacteria can turn into 1 million bacteria in 7 hours!!!!!! And a billion in 10 hours. Very scary. So if one bacteria divides, and one of the new bacteria has developed a mutation that enables it to be stronger than the antibiotic, 7 hours later,

there could be a million of the mutated resistant culprits. Every single time antibiotics are used, both either appropriately or inappropriately, some degree of resistance develops. Even if prescriptions are made with proper diligence by doctors, and dosing instructions followed with good compliance by patients. This is because the weaker bacteria will be killed off, but the resistant survivors that have been kept at bay with antibiotics or only half killed off will rise up later with more vengeance. With appropriate antibiotic use, this effect is of a much lesser significance. Fortunately. So when are antibiotics used inappropriately? For one, in treating viral infections. I have been treated for a viral infection once with antibiotics. Much to my immense frustration, that is. It all started with a swollen throat. Walk-in doctor prescribed an antibiotic. Well, in the midst of university exams, and after the 9 o-clock visit to the hospital, I didn’t care much that time, just followed the label directions on the prescription. Lone and behold, I did not get better. And more oncoming exams were threatening. So back to the doctor I went. More antibiotics. Back home I went. And, once again, with a low immune system due to exam season, did not recover. Long story short, after a month of this same pattern, I ended up in the hospital, hardly able to get out of bed, on three different antibiotics. Still, not a single blood test, throat swab, or any other form of diagnostic test had been performed. My frustration was rising. Along came doctor number 5. She suggested bloodwork. And there it was. Screaming viral infection to a T. So the antibiotics were phased out. I rested for a while, ate some decent food, escaped from exams, generally improved my quality of life, and left the hospital, recovering and back to the grind in no time. Rabies, the common cold, influenza, mononucleosis, just to name a few, are all viruses. There is not a bacterial cause to these illnesses. Antibiotics, or antimicrobials, or antibacterial
treatment; however you like, will do zilch to stop these underlying causes. Maintaining a healthy immune system is key. It is easy to believe sometimes that an antibiotic cured a viral infection. But, what about a viral infection having run its course? Yes, that is what happens. The body is amazing at healing itself. Whether on antibiotics or not. If you are prescribed an antibiotic, by all means, follow the directions and finish out the prescription completely, unless a follow up appointment with the doctor indicates a different course of action. If under any circumstances, doctors or veterinarians advise you to stop or change an antibiotic treatment regime for any reason, please do not keep the antibiotics for later use, or throw them in the garbage! Please bring them in to a medical/veterinarian office to be properly disposed of. It is important to go for the blood test, or urine test, or other tests that are advised, in order to confirm that an antibiotic will be helpful. Or to find out that what actually is wrong may require a totally different treatment regime. Unfortunately, in veterinary medicine, these tests all cost money directly. In human medicine, we pay indirectly for these services in taxes and medical plans (in Canada, anyway). Moving forward, we need to use antibiotics judiciously, making sure that the tough bacteria to kill are all killed off properly, and we need to use antibiotics less. For example, flushing an abscess and Epsom salt poulticing might be all that is needed. In some countries, antibiotics are much more readily available over the counter than they are in Canada. It is bad enough in Canada that they are as easily available as they are. We will see what happens over the next few years. In the meantime, let’s each do our part in striving to use antibiotics more responsibly. Vaccines, healthy lifestyles, and regular visits to your doctor or veterinarian are pretty awesome alternatives to sickness and the need for antibiotics. Dr. Jenny Soucy

Livestock specialist shares tips on how to prevent fly populations The arrival of May means now is the time to ensure cattle feeding sites are properly managed and kept clean. Excess manure can cause a multitude of issues, ranging from increased fly populations to dirty water. Joel DeRouchey, professor in Kansas State University’s Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, said that from a sanitation standpoint, any manure that is lying around could end up downstream, especially during times of heavy spring rains. Manure that gets caught in spring rains and ends up downstream could spell trouble, including for cattle, he said. “We know the environmental consequence, even from small sites, of a lot of manure that builds up,” said DeRouchey, a livestock nutrition and environmental manr0011177123

agement specialist for K-State Research and Extension. “From a phosphorus, nitrogen and bacterial standpoint, that could run off into our surface water, often times in the same area where we expect those cattle to be drinking.” Unclean drinking water for cattle isn’t the only problem that excess manure can cause. Flies can wreak havoc on cattle as well, even if they don’t seem to be a noticeable problem to the producer. Heading into summer, there are fewer opportunities to spread manure because of the growing crops. So get that spring cleaning done sooner rather than later, he advised.

National beef antimicrobial research strategy As concerns grow about the continued effectiveness of antimicrobials in human health and questions arise about the contribution of modern beef production to antimicrobial resistance in human medicine, the beef industry is increasingly pressured to reconsider its methods of combatting harmful bacteria in cattle. Research will play a critical role in the industry’s ability to reduce medically-important
antimicrobial use and to develop, identify and implement effective, responsible alternatives to antimicrobials. “There’s no doubt antimicrobial resistance, use and their alternatives are a high priority in terms of policy, research, and regulations,” says Tim Oleksyn, a cow-calf producer from Shellbrook, Saskatchewan and chair of the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC). Due to the importance and priority placed
on antimicrobial resistance and use, funding of antimicrobial-related livestock research is increasing both federally and provincially. The strategy is a result of extensive consultation with all major stakeholder groups, including cattle producers and industry representatives, veterinarians, pharmaceutical experts, scientists, academics, human medical professionals, government regulators, policy makers, and research funders.

Time to start monitoring for scab by Pierce Paul Wheat is now heading out in some fields and will likely begin flowering in various parts of the state over the next two to three weeks. On average, it usually takes about 5 days from full head emergence (Feekes 10.5) to flowering, and flowering is usually over in about the same number of days. However, flowering could take a bit longer to occur and the flowering window could be much wider under cool conditions similar to those forecasted for the next week or so. Once wheat begins to flower, scab and vomitoxin become our biggest concerns. It is therefore
time for a refresher on head scab, and some useful tips to help you use the scab forecasting system to monitor the risk of this disease. Scab develops best and the risk is highest when wet, humid weather conditions occur during flowering. These conditions favor the production of spore by the scab fungus, Fusarium graminearum, infection of the wheat heads, development of the disease, and production of vomitoxin. Scab not only affects wheat, it also affects barley and other small grains, causing significant grain yield and quality losses, particularly if the variety is susceptible.
Scab develops best and the risk is highest when wet.

Friendly neighbourhoods and grazing grazed areas also reduces the fire hazard from the buildup of old grass and larger fuel source. This is a benefit to all in the community.” Monetary compensation is a conversation between you and your neighbour, explains Hanson. “It will most likely be the cattle owner who will put up and maintain the fence and ensure there is water for the cattle. As the cattle producer, you are getting the benefit of both the old and new grass that is in the area; however, that also depends on the types of forage growing.” It will be important that your cattle behave themselves and don’t end up out and trampling your neighbor’s crop, adds Hanson. Not every area is practical for cattle graze. AB GRAZING LEASE ASSOCIATION PhOTO

Friendly neighbour relations today could be the start of a long relationship that leads well into the future and helps get you through low feed times this spring. “Not every square foot of land in Alberta is farmed,” says Andrea Hanson, beef extension specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Airdrie. Hanson suggests reading an AgriNews article from April 25, 2016, entitled Reducing the Impact of Grazing Early. “Not every area is practical to have cattle graze. It may be in the middle of a cropped field and crop would have to be trampled to get to it, or the land is soft and won’t bear the weight of cattle, but if there are areas along the edge and there’s a possibility.” It starts with a conversation to create a clear understanding of both parties’ expectations, says Hanson. “Perhaps there’s a neighbour whose land borders yours and he/she doesn’t have cattle to use the grass or getting their cattle to the area isn’t practical.” Typically, these ungrazed areas have a lot of old thatch or grass from previous year’s growth that will protect the new growing shoots from being overgrazed. “Grazing these areas now and leaving your pastures that may need some extra time would be a wise plan for the longevity of your pastures. M7 SERIES
INTRODUCING
THE NEXT BIG THING IN TRACTORS. When we set out to make farming easier and more efficient, we focused on the relationships between farming operations and workers, as well as between farming and the environment. We went back to the basics to address the issues that farmers around the world face; exploring the past and future of farming. And we imagined how the ideal tractor could make everyday farming tasks in the future easier and more efficient and the environment just a little bit cleaner. And then we went ahead and built it. Introducing the Kubota M7, the cleanest, most capable, most powerful tractor we have ever built.

Canada to compensate dairy farmers for Europe trade deal The Canadian government said on Monday it would compensate the country’s dairy farmers for increased European imports allowed under a pending free trade deal. The government will meet with the dairy industry within the next 30 days to discuss compensation, said Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland in a joint statement.
These rollers are based on the old “Peacelander” design.
1/2” 5/8” OR wall drums wall drums 8” x 8” heavy walled tubing frame Easy opening, requires only 1 hydraulic circuit with 2 cylinders and a minimum of bushings. All pins are greasable. Overall width is Up to 51 feet. Booking for the summer.
Talks will include help for farmers and processors, they said. The previous Conservative government, which the Liberals defeated in October, had promised before the last election to compensate dairy, poultry and egg farmers a total of C$4.3 billion (US$3.43 billion) over 15 years for losses under the European Union trade deal as well as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). of compensation does not include TPP, however, because it is less certain the deal will be completed. Under Canada’s free trade deal with the European Union, which the affected countries have not yet ratified, European dairies would receive tariff-free access for an additional 17,700 tonnes of cheese, representing about 2 percent of Canadian cheese consumption and more than doubling their current allotment, according to Dairy Farmers of Canada. The trade deal could take effect in 2017. Canada’s dairy industry operates under a system of supply, price and import controls, sheltering farmers from drops in global prices. Reuters

You have to learn to spring clean your feed room
For those of us in milder climates, spring is quickly turning in to summer. However, for many, trees are still leafing out and spring has only just arrived. No matter how far in to spring you are, there’s something about this season that begs action. This is a great time for tidying, cleaning, and organizing before the summer heat sets in. Feed bins—If you have free standing feed bins they probably haven’t been pulled away from the wall and washed out all winter. Who knows what it living behind them (hopefully just spiders!) but it’s worth pulling them out and checking for evidence of rodent activity, and giving the area a good sweep. Check plastic trash cans used for storing feed for holes, because rats will chew holes in the bottoms of these bins. Wash cans out with dilute bleach, but make sure they’re dry before putting any feed in them.
If you empty feed in to bins, create a system where you keep the empty bag until your next bag is purchased. What for? Because the bag and accompanying tag have information on them that tell you important production information. If there is a feed recall you need to have this information to determine whether your batch of feed is affected. Without the bag you have no way of knowing and no proof. Bonus tip: Take a feed tag photo with your phone as a space saving solution. Feed buckets—While you have the dilute bleach solution out give all your feed buckets a good scrub, and then keep going and disinfect your grooming brushes, too. Supplements—Sort through supplements and make sure that none are past their useby dates. And maybe your horse’s diet needs a spring clean, too! Take a moment to review supplement ingredients and notice whether
you’re unnecessarily doubling up on any ingredients. Removing duplicative products is an easy way to declutter your feed room, potentially save money, and avoid over-supplementation. Also, create a system for organizing your supplements so that they’re easy to find and it’s clear which horse they belong to. Make a measured feed scoop—Horses need to be fed by weight not volume, but I frequently hear from horse owners that weighing feed is too time consuming. But, if you plan appropriately, you only have to weigh it once. Take a box-type or cylindrical feed scoop or use a coffee can and weigh it on a digital kitchen scale, zeroing out the scale to account for the scoop’s weight. to run out. Source : TheHorse

Trippin’ on a Fort Mac attack for support I don’t know how many parts this series will be. There are SOOOO many stories I want to share with you. Why? Because this riding community stepped up in ways that have me trembling with pride. The mainstream media, to this point has purposefully ignored acknowledging the efforts of we riders. Every time I think about the generosity of the people in my community, both Grande Prairie and the Riding community my heart swells with pride and my eyes fill with tears. I want to start at the very beginning with how I came to decide on heading to Fort Mac. On 6 AM Tuesday morning, May 4th I was watching the news, I had been feel-
ing so impotent and wanted desperately for there to be something I could do. Darby Allen, the Fire Chief came on and mentioned his front line responders had no food or water and immediately I knew what I could do. One phone call, two emails and one Facebook post later and we were on the road to Fort McMurray with what would turn out to be the first of many truckload of supplies that were needed. Lynda Klouth, the contractor who runs the BKC News Bytes, Grande Prairie and Region agreed to drive me up there with her diesel truck and holiday trailer. Costco kicked in $350 worth of supplies over and above what we paid for and UFA in Grande Prairie and Athabasca made sure we had
Fort McMurray road block. BELT DRIVE BETTY PHOTO
fuel.... Jeremy Hall from Ruby Ridge Contracting, a rider with the Condemned Ones MC reached out and said he’d be coming up with supplies but he also had a Fire Fighter out of Grovedale who needed a ride up to Fort Mac. We picked Jessy Kappel the Firefighter from Grovedale who has 7 of her blood brothers who were working on the front line - all firefighters! We headed to Fort Mac with Jessy making calls arranging for fuel and other much needed supports, Lynda driving and me building sandwiches as we went. We hit the Anzac roadblock at 6pm. The fire was jumping the highway and we could not get in, but we started feeding RCMP officers on the highway - many of them explaining that while there was a camp about 10 KMS away, many of them hadn’t eaten in 10 and 12 hours. Sandwiches, water, fruit and veggie trays were passed out and devoured in short order! We waited at the roadblock for what felt like forever. Jessy was chomping at the bit to get these supplies and herself up there to do her logistics and firefighting job. I forget the exact time
when Anzac’s Command centre went up in smoke. But we saw all of the evacuation buses and the Black plumes of smoke and then the fire right beside us on the highway. The RCMP moved us to the opposite side of the highway heading back south to wait out the evacuation measure, so we watched it all. It was terrifying. At about 11:30 pm on May 4th we were finally escorted into Mac Island to set up our food station. The very first firefighter we served was a big man who anchored out his rig and got out of the fire truck just vibrating with fatigue from head to toe. He asked if by chance this food was for them and when I told him that yes, we motorcyclists of Alberta were here to serve them he picked me up and crying told me I was his angel, that he hadn’t eaten in 62 hours, he’d been surviving on Ritz Crackers and granola bars. And story after story was the same - OMG Coffee, I haven’t had coffee in two days...this sandwich is the best thing in the world - I haven’t eaten in two days or 24 hours.... And I made sure that every firefighter, EMT, RCMP officer, truck driver etc knew
that BIKERS - RIDERS were responsible for making this happen. I worked with Lynda’s help, through the night making sandwiches and coffee and doing our best to raise the spirits of our boys and girls. We worked all day Wednesday and through into Thursday morning and then Linda headed back to Grande Prairie for another load of supplies. In the meantime, Jeremy Hall from Ruby Ridge Contracting had brought down a load of supplies and Will Skinner - both of them just pitched in and began helping to feed people. On Thursday morning, Brian Jean opposition leader from the Wild Rose Party and Tany Yao also from the Wild Rose representing Wood Buffalo - their kind words were deeply appreciated by those of us feeding our fire fighters. More to follow - but I need to get on the road to Two Hills to present them their trophy and road signs. Then back to Fort Mac with more supplies. If you are blessed to be riding today, please ride like everyone around you is blind and cannot see you. Belt Drive Betty, Editor & Rider

THE BIG BEND Joe, Tony, Carl and Melvin;
THE CHRISTENSONS By Arletta Hampton The Christensons had all been born in Wisconsin, U.S.A. but when the boys grew up they decided to emigrate to Canada, where they had heard about the good land for homesteading. They settled near Drumheller, Mel staying there to farm, Carl going to Greenlawn taking up a homestead. Tony had polio as a lad, so he went to Greenlawn to live with Carl. He was a good mechanic so went to Dewberry where he worked in a garage until 1950 when he moved to Blueberry.

In 1965, Mel, Joe and Tony sold some of their land to Bob Hampton and Joe and Mel moved to the north half. After improving this site, they decided to retire. Mel went to Creston to live with his sisters, Claire and Nellie. Joe sold his land to Ron Wedman. Joe did a little travelling, then returned to Spirit River to live at the Lodge a short while before passing away February 5, 1980.

Seeding is off to an early start over most of Saskatchewan. Fifteen per cent of the 2016 crop is seeded, compared to the five-year average of four per cent, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly crop report. The southwest is furthest advanced at 35 per cent. Robert Horne started seeding April 18 on his farm about 20 kilometres east of Swift Current. “The topsoil is drying out a bit, but we are still seeding into decent moisture,” Horne says. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 78 per cent adequate, 19 per cent short and one per cent very short. Saskatchewan Agriculture says many parts of the south and west will need rain soon to help crops germinate and emerge. Temperatures were at least 10 degrees above normal for most of the week. Jean Tremel started seeding on his farm about 100 kilometres east of Saskatoon on April 30, a few days earlier than originally planned. The Bruno-area farmer says it is a completely different situation than May 2014. “On the first of May two years ago, I dug out my drill so I could see it in the snow bank,” Tremel says. “We ended up (starting) seeding on May 16.” Tremel has seeded barley and
will move on to hard red spring wheat before wrapping up with canola. Topsoil moisture in the Bruno area is excellent following 38 centimetres (15 inches) of rain between mid-July and freeze-up last year. It provides a bit of breathing room just in case there’s a repeat of last year when little to no precipitation fell during May and June. Very large farmers appreciate an early start to the growing season. Kevin Hruska and his employees are using six seeders to plant 44,000 acres of canola and wheat in the Esterhazy region, about 70 kilometres southeast of Yorkton. “We have to get it done in 16 days,” Hruska says. “That is sort of the target. If it goes well, we usually do.” An earlier seeding date for canola means the flowering plant has a greater chance of missing the hottest July temperatures. Of course, there is the worry that a newly emerged canola seedling could be damaged by a hard May frost resulting in costly reseeding. Environment Canada meteorologist John Paul Cragg provides some reassurance, but no guarantees. “A cold snap looks unlikely over the next two weeks, but we will be in a cooler pattern next week and there is a small risk of seeing overnight lows dipping slightly below zero.”

Agvocate; what does it mean? What do you want it to mean? The term “agvocate” means different industry; wears their passion for ag on things to different people. Here’s what it means to us. There has been many conversations lately, both online and off, about the word “agvocate”. For us it’s a term to quickly encapsulate all of the positive intents of people actively speaking up and for the agriculture industry; a simple way to build a community of likeminded, passionate people. Our choice to embrace using the term was the result of many conversations among our team here and we love it. Here’s why. A few years ago we wrote a blog post entitled Are you an agvocate?, where we talked about what the term means to us. To us, an agvocate: uses facts and personal experiences to dispel myths and misperceptions about the ag industry; acknowledges the challenges in ag, but focuses on the positive side of the
their sleeve and looks for ways to share it with the world; speaks up, speaks positively and, most importantly, speaks first – an agvocate looks for opportunities to create conversations as opposed to always responding to others; and is inclusive and respectful – an agvocate looks to find common ground and build lines of communication, not draw lines in the sand. But whether you love the term or not, it’s important to not get hung up on it. We need to concentrate on the real goal: our industry being a trusted voice that can help shape people’s relationship with agriculture and food in positive, realistic and engaging ways. Because at the end of the day, it truly isn’t the word that matters. It’s about all of us working together to tell Canada, and the world, about our wonderful industry.

B.C. dairy farmer assures consumers of animal care with real stories of farm life Julaine Treur is a mother of four young children, employer to two part-time farm workers and a dairy farmer on a 90-cow, 72-acre organic dairy farm in British Columbia’s lush and fertile Fraser Valley. She answered the call to speak out for agriculture when she realized the extent of consumer misinformation about her industry. While the part-time employees help out with afternoon milking and feeding, Julaine and her husband Johannes do the balance of the 24-7 farm work. And still she finds time to write, blog and agvocate for the industry. Why do you agvocate? I watched a video about a family on a nearby dairy farm. It was a beautiful video, and showed how farmers are stewards of the land and of their animals. But then I was horrified to see many very negative comments appear under this video; comments accusing dairy farmers of rape, abuse, murder and more. I had no idea there were people who actually believed that sort of thing, much less were actively trying to spread these myths and lies about the dairy
industry. I started our Facebook page and began to share photos and stories of life on our dairy farm. I was so surprised at the response! How do you agvocate? I do the bulk of my agvocating from my Creekside Dairy Facebook page. I share stories and photos of life on our farm or information about industry issues (supply management, for example) on a regular basis. I also write blog posts about topics I feel passionate about that require more space to explain. I use Instagram, but I’m not as comfortable with it yet. I find Twitter great for interacting with other farmers and for keeping my finger on the pulse of what’s new and interesting in the agriculture world. Videos have been incredibly popular on my Facebook page. Case in point: on Wednesday, March 30, our cows went out to pasture for the first time this spring. I recorded the event and within 24 hours, the video had been viewed 12,000 times, reached more than 30,000 people, had been shared 130+ times and had racked up a much larger than normal num-

PATTERSON’S
ber of comments, including many from consumers not involved in agriculture! One month later, the video has become my most popular post ever, at 33,000 views, over 400 shares, all reaching more than 90,000 people! What advice would you give other agvocates? Be polite. Our first reactions may be anger and resentment when presented with false and misleading facts about farming, but we need to swallow this anger and respond in a respectful and civil manner. Outrage and annoyance will not win any support, but polite, well thought out responses will engender respect and lend credence to your statements.
PATTERSON’S
Be accepting. Realize that not all farms and farmers are alike. Belittling or demeaning other types of farms or farmers will not help consumers feel confident about our industry. We need to stand together regardless of whether our farms are organic or conventional, tie-stall or freestall, with pasture- or barn-based herds; none of these characteristics make one farm better than another, they simply make us different. What does being an agvocate mean to you? Agvocacy is a blend of two of my favourite things: farming and interacting with people. - courtesy Ag More Than Ever

Planning farm land ownership in Alberta Farm Auction sale season has begun, and an Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) specialist says a lot of retiring farmers are choosing to sell their land by public auction. “With interest rates remain low and the majority of Alberta farms continuing to have a strong balance sheet, the demand for farmland purchase in Alberta remains robust,” says Rick Dehod, farm financial specialist, AF. “With farm land prices continuing to appreciate, a wellresearched financial and ownership plan will guard against ill-prepared land purchases, so do your homework before making a final decision.” Questions to Consider before Buying Farmland 1. Why do you want to buy Farmland? - How does this relate back to your business plan and overall farm or investment strategy – is your goal to expand, bring in a new partner, insure control of productive acres, etc. 2. What is your farm business’ financial condition?
- Consider needed investments, expected expenditures, and crop conditions to determine if buying land is the best use for your cash. 3. Have you created a proforma cash flow? - Research the expected revenue of the potential land to determine if the purchase fits into your plans. 4. Given your revenue forecast, are you overpaying? - If you are paying a premium land price how long until you recoup your investment? 5. Have you given it long and careful consideration? - Never be rushed by a real estate broker, and never confide your best price or financial goals with the party working for the seller. 6. Does it make more financial sense to lease the land than own it? - Leasing rates have risen recently but leasing vs. purchasing frees up cash. 7. Should you go all in with your cash? - Talk to your banker or accountant about alternatives to using all cash in the purchase transaction.
8. How much land are you acquiring? - Sounds simple, but many times there is confusion about how much land is actually being purchased. ts may be in the easements. 9. What is the current estimated market value of similar land? 10. What is the soil story? - What is the capability of the soil you are buying and how does this impact your revenue forecast? 11. What is the water source? - Is the property irrigated? Are water rights part of the purchase price? Adequate water is essential to establishing the value of the property. 12. What do you know about the oil/gas, mineral and wind rights for the property? 13. How is the property zoned? – Will your plans for the property conflict with existing zoning restrictions. 14. How will you register the title to the property? Will you register it individually, jointly with a spouse, a partner, a family member or a family-owned corporation
or trust? 15. Are there any environmental problems? - The last thing you want to buy is a costly environmental problem. Ask the owner regarding the history of the property? 16. How long will you actively farm? - Make sure your financing plan matches the rest of your intended career as an active producer. Buying land in this market is an important decision, and will impact your farm business. Use all the resources available to do your financial and cash flow planning. Speak to your banker, your accountant or your Farm Advisor.
