Absentee-owned farms a wildfire hazard The land next to Kelvin and Heather Hiebert’s property in Rose Prairie hasn’t been farmed in over 30 years. It’s covered in waist-high grass, with an unkempt fence line that backs onto a stand of trees.

They’ve seen the owner, who’s from Germany, just a handful of times. But as wildfires tore through the region last month, the property quickly went from eyesore to hazard.

“We’ve been saying for years that it’s only going to take a lightening strike or a carelessly thrown match to cause a lot of damage in the neighbourhood, because of these areas that are not looked after,” Heather Hiebert said.

The Hieberts, who grow grain and raise cattle in Rose Prairie, are one of an untold number of farmers in the Peace Region living adjacent to absentee-owned land.

“Either farm it or rent it out, or somehow manage that tall dry grass,” Goodings said. “That created a real issue for some of the neighbours of that land because it was a definite fire source.”

B.C. by mid-May, is a new wrinkle in the ongoing debate over foreign ownership of B.C. farmland. B.C. has no restrictions on out of country ownership, which has long led to speculation that foreign investment is driving up prices. The province does not yet track the country of origin of a land purchaser, so much of the information about the phenomena is anecdotal.

Kevin Boon, general manager of the B.C. Cattlemen’s Association, said that to his knowledge, B.C. is the only province in Canada “that doesn’t have some sort of foreign ownership regulations on farmland.”

“It is fairly extensive.

We have a fair number of ranches that are foreign-owned,” Boon said. “It is a concern for us, as to why they’re purchasing land and what is our ability to integrate that into our own province’s economy, as well as its food supply.”

The issue most recently came to light last May, when it was

revealed the British multinational Reckitt Benckiser Inc. had purchased swathes of B.C. farmland for reforestation for carbon offsets.

Boon said that while he wasn’t familiar with the context in the Peace, he was aware of other out of country buyers picking up B.C. farmland as investment properties.

“They know the value of land’s going to go up, and they can purchase some land up there,” he said.

Goodings, a farmer in Cecil Lake, said foreign ownership is a factor in the agricultural land market in Northeast B.C. She hopes to push the province’s Agricultural Land Commission to set new conditions on absentee property owners, requiring upkeep of properties that are increasingly becoming fire hazards.

“We’re fortunate to have relatively cheaply-priced farm land in Canada,” she said.

In that way, there are parallels with the foreign ownership de-

bate in Vancouver—where housing prices are skyrocketing.

According to the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, the average price of a detached home in Metro Vancouver jumped 36.9

per cent year over year last month.

A Farm Credit Canada report released in April shows that farmland values in B.C. continue to rise, however more slowly than a decade ago.

The average value of B.C. farmland grew 6.5 per cent last year, well below the national average of 10.1 per cent. Growth peaked in 2006, when B.C. saw 19.3 per cent year over year gains in the price of farmland. The report notes that in the Peace, most parcels sold privately to local producers. And while B.C. does not restrict foreign ownership, the Agricultural Land Commission places stringent rules on non-agricultural use of farmland.

While there’s less money at play, Vancouver’s foreign ownership debate is already having an impact on rural areas. New rules brought in to gauge the impact of out-of-country investment in the Lower Mainland promise to shed some light on foreign ownership of farmland. Starting June 10, B.C.’s finance ministry will be-

gin collecting citizenship data on property transfer tax forms.

According to a ministry spokesperson, those new rules will apply to ranches and agricultural land, meaning Vancouver’s real estate market will give some insight into foreign ownership of farmland. At the end of the day, though, Heather Hiebert just wants her neighbour to cut the grass.

During the worst of the blaze, her husband cut a fireguard into the absentee-owned land to keep it from spreading. A water bomber soon made short work of the fire on the adjacent field. She supported Goodings’ push for more regulations on absenteeowned property, but added there are plenty of locals who also fail to keep up their land.

“It is becoming more and more of a problem,” she said. “The land is becoming a fire hazard because the grass is waist deep and there’s nothing you can really do about it.” reporter@dcdn.ca

Crop commissions hire Ipsos Reid to survey farm practices Alberta’s four major crop commissions are addressing a growing need for the grain sector to meet high sustainability standards needed to maintain and expand international market competitiveness. The crop commissions contracted Ipsos Reid to conduct a phone survey of Alberta growers in late June to gain a better understanding of farmers’ readiness to benefit from internationally recognized sustainability standards and beneficial management practices.

Jolene Noble, Extension Coordinator for the newly formed Farm Sustainability Extension Working Group (FSEWG) says, “Canadian agriculture has a very positive image in the global market place and Alberta growers are progressive, innovative, and dedicated to the stewardship of their land.” This reputation positions the Alberta farmers to be leaders in the sustainable agriculture movement and capitalize on emerging market opportunities.

“We are living in a world where fewer and fewer people have a connection

to agriculture. At the same time there is a growing interest by consumers as to where their food comes from,” says Jason Lenz, Vice Chairman with Alberta Barley.

“Sustainability is increasingly important to consumers, restaurants, and food retailers, so we need to be able to demonstrate that we are producing a sustainable product and dedicated to continued improvement on this front.”

In mid to late June, growers will be receiving phone calls from Ipsos Reid to answer questions regarding their production practices. Results from this survey will enable the industry to quantify the great work that Alberta growers are already doing on farm sustainability.

Building on the work from the Alberta Crops Sustainability Certification Pilot Project from spring of 2015, the working group will assess the results and provide resources and extension support to continue advancing on farm sustainability production practices in Alberta.

Trailer loading and hauling tips There are a lot of things to know about horses and trailers that are helpful. I’ll start with loading.

The interesting thing to know is that you do not need a trailer to prepare a horse for trailer loading.

Horses that unload fast or panicky acting are usually horses that were not loaded correctly. In Stage 2 of The Horse Ranch program, one of the tasks the person is required to be able to do is stand outside the trailer and send the horse into the trailer. The horse needs to stay in the trailer for one minute without the person blocking the door.

If the horse turns and sticks its head out of the door before one minute then there is more preparation to do before I would say he was ready to haul or close the door. The best way to prepare a horse, is to make sure you can stand still and send your horse under things, over things and between things without moving your feet.

You put a feel on the lead and you have taught him to follow the direction of the feel you put on the halter. You should have this working well enough that you can send your horse at different speeds. If, while standing still, you could pick up the lead line and suggest a canter from your horse without moving your

feet or chasing him with a stick, then you’ve done a very good job of teaching your horse to “follow a feel”. It doesn’t have to be that good for trailer loading but it is an example of how good it can be.

There are 3 reasons a horse doesn’t load easily or unloads too fast. It can be 1, 2, or all 3 of these reasons. It could be a confidence, a respect, or an understanding issue. If we learn how to build these 3 areas there will not be a trailer loading issue going in or out of the trailer.

Being able to send horses at different speeds with and without obstacles in their way such as over barrels suggests that we have achieved what the horse needed and we have prepared the horse for tight spaces. It isn’t about the trailer. Every trailer loading demo that I’ve done across Canada, U.S. Mexico, and Brazil and for students in the last 15 years the horse and owner did not understand these concepts.

Sending a horse into the trailer is more proof that the horse is more ready to haul. If he can stay in without you blocking the door that is more proof. If you can go in and out of the trailer pet him and he is not tied and he stays in the trailer again that is a horse that has had good preparation for hauling. Once they are at this

point I’m happy to go to the next step.

I get asked all the time, should I tie the horse or turn them loose.

There are lots of variables to this.

If they tie great, then tying is fine.

The question is what is great? If a horse gets worried, what you called a great tying horse might not be so great. If I’m using an angle haul trailer, I will put the horse in its stall. I take the rope and run the rope up through the ring in front of him, then bring the rope back to the next stall and run the rope through that ring.

I close the partition while holding the end of the rope then tie it in the stall that the horse is not in. So horse goes in first stall, his rope goes through the ring in

his stall, but I tie the knot in the second stall after the stall partition is closed.

To let him out, I undo my knot in the second stall then open the stall partition. This way you don’t need to be next to the horse and have him tied hard with no protection for you if he gets worried and pulls back.

This week from the DCVC: pain management in cattle Dr. Zoe Ross

Spring is upon us and with it comes calving, branding and moving cows to pasture. In today’s world and with changes in the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Beef Cattle, there is increasing awareness and pressure to monitor and control pain in cattle. Despite some of the negative social media posts that imply that cattle owners are cruel and don’t care about pain, this is not generally the case.

Most cattle clients that I know genuinely care about their animals and don’t want to see them in pain or suffering. It is also not in their best interest financially to allow their animals to be in pain because animals that are painful don’t eat or grow as well as their counterparts. Some of the events that occur in the spring can be sources of pain for animals such as: calving, castrating, dehorning and branding. Many of these are unavoidable events that have good reasons for happening.

Fortunately, there are steps that producers can take to minimize and control the pain these procedures may create.

Cattle can be quite adept at hiding pain, they are prey animals and to show pain may show weakness to predators. They do however show signs that producers can recognize if they are looking for them.

Some of these signs include: laying down more than usual, kicking or stamping their feet, vocalizing, reluctance to move, limping or taking short steps, grinding

teeth, grunting, a hunched back, and looking at the area of pain.

As I mentioned before, an animal in pain tends to eat less and this can result in poor condition or slower growth. A drop in average daily gain is not ideal.

There are methods that are better (less painful) for certain procedures such as dehorning and castrations.

Generally it is much better to perform these procedures in younger calves rather than delaying until they are older. Research has been done to show that banding older calves (at weaning or older) as a method of castration can be quite painful for as long as a month after the procedure and can result in a significant decrease in average daily gains. This technique is not recommended. Dehorning older animals with fully developed horns can also be more

painful and there can be more complications. Low stress handling and having good handling systems can help minimize both stress and injuries. There will be a seminar on low stress handling that is being held by the Peace River Forage Association and the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic in June.

There are many methods to help control and manage pain in animals. Anesthesia is one way to do this. Local nerves blocks can be used (similar to the type of freezing dentists use on people).

There is a nerve that goes to the horn of cattle and injecting local anesthesia around this nerve can help with pain during dehorning, especially in older animals.

Veterinarians often administer anesthetic by an epidural to help with painful procedures such as dystocias (calving complications)

The one that is used very frequently is called Meloxicam or Metacam. It provides good pain relief for a longer duration than the other anti-inflammatories available. There is an injectable formulation available and an oral formulation. There are many reports from ranchers that calves seem to do better after branding when this product is used and are more likely to pair up with their mom’s and move out to pasture better because they are less painful.

Celebrating B.C. Agri-Food success at home and ‘round the world

Three British Columbia (BC) agri-food companies are back home in our province getting ready to ship their products to new international customers after successful tradeshows in the United States, the Netherlands, and South Korea.

The companies received matching funding through the BC Agrifood & Seafood Export Program, part of Growing Forward 2. The program supports industry participation in export market development activities, including at international tradeshows, promotional events, incoming and outgoing trade missions and to develop marketing materials for international audiences.

“This programming helps B.C. companies showcase the diversity and quality of Canadian food products to buyers around the world and will go a long way in boosting international sales.” said Lawrence MacAulay, Federal Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood.

“The B.C. government has been expanding the market for B.C. agri-foods around the world, reaching a record $3 billion in exports to more than 150 countries. Building markets is one of the key priorities in the B.C. Agrifood and Seafood Strategic Growth Plan as we look to increase provincial revenues in the agri-food and seafood sector to $15 billion a year by 2020. said B.C. Minister of Agriculture, Norm Letnick.

“The funding has assisted us in identifying new customers and we look forward to sharing our locally grown products with them soon,” said Chai Company marketing and sales manager Catherine Wong.

Suncor Energy announces $2.5 billion common share financing deal Suncor today announced it has entered into an agreement to sell 71.5 million common shares from treasury, on a bought deal basis, at a price of $35.00 per share (the “Offering”). The net proceeds of the Offering will be used for the previously announced acquisition of an additional five percent interest in the Syncrude joint venture and to reduce certain outstanding indebtedness in order to provide ongoing balance sheet flexibility, including for opportunistic growth transactions that Suncor may identify in the future.

Over the last nine months, Suncor has invested approximately $9 billion via acquisitions and related future development expenditures, resulting in increased, long life production capacity of approximately 164,000 barrels per day. Including the Offering, these investments have been 60% funded by the issuance of equity and 40% by cash and debt, leaving balance sheet flexibility for potential future opportunistic growth transactions.

The Offering will be made through a syndicate of underwriters (the “Underwriters”) led by TD Securities Inc., CIBC Capital Markets and J.P. Morgan Securities Canada Inc. The gross proceeds are expected to be approximately $2.5 billion. Completion of the Offering is subject to, and conditional upon, the receipt of all necessary approvals, including approval of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. The Offering is expect-

ed to close on or about June 22, 2016.

Suncor has also granted the Underwriters an over-allotment option to purchase up to an additional 10.7 million common shares at the offering price, exercisable at any time until 30 days after closing of the Offering. If the over-allotment option is exercised in full, the gross proceeds from the Offering are expected to be approximately $2.9 billion.

The common shares will be issued by way of a short form prospectus that will be filed with securities regulatory authorities in Canada and with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the United States under the multijurisdictional disclosure system. Suncor has filed a preliminary short form prospectus in respect of the Offering and a registration statement (including the preliminary short form prospectus) with the SEC to which this communication and the Offering relate. The preliminary short form prospectus is subject to completion or amendment.

Weak beef exports are a real meaty concern when it comes to volume Mexico and Canada in 2015 were, respectively, the No. 1 and No. 4 volume destinations for U.S. beef exports. So it’s no understatement to say that the integrated North American market is vital for the health of the U.S. cattle/ beef industry. It thus came as something of a

shock that exports the first two months of the year were so weak.

Exports to Mexico in January and February fell 18 per cent in volume (31,850 metric tons) and fell 28 per cent in value (US$143.4 million). Exports to Canada were down 11

per cent in volume (17,532 mt) and down 25 per cent in value (US$104.7 million). The U.S. Meat Export Federation, which compiles the data, gave no reason for the weakness in exports to Canada. But it made it clear that the weak Mexican peso offset any decline in U.S. prices.

Weak beef issues, continued from page 21 Fortunately, export volumes were higher to most Asian markets and steady elsewhere. But they were not enough to offset the volume declines in North America. Total February beef exports were 83,203 mt, up slightly from last year but their value dropped 18 per cent to US$437 million. January-February exports were up two per cent in volume (165,504 mt) from a year ago but fell 16 per cent in value to $$875.1 million. Indications were that volumes improved somewhat in March and April but that values remained depressed.

The meagre year-on-year growth in volume is probably more troubling than the value decline. The U.S. is producing more beef than last year so there’s more to sell on the domestic market than a year ago. That’s one reason why the weekly comprehensive beef cut-out (comprised of cuts and grinds) was running 13 per cent below last year in mid-April. But these lower prices did not stimulate the kind of increase in export

volumes that packers had expected.

The lower export values in part reflect the lower prices. They might also reflect the product mix of exports, which can vary considerably from month to month.

For example, a month of big sales of short ribs would bring a higher value for the month than if the big seller was short plates.

USDA Choice short ribs averaged around US$5 per pound in 2014, going as high as US$5.50.

But the price fell back to US$3.50 after Australia received a reduction in its export tariff in Japan. The price then recovered to US$4.25 to US$4.50 after Australian production declined sharply at the start of this year.

The Donation Steer Initiative originated as an idea of past Valhalla club leader, Delwyn Postman, who had been seeking a way for the members to give thanks to the community for years of support.

Tragically, in 1993, Delwyn was killed in a motor vehicle accident on his way to the meeting where he was planning to present his idea. In his memory, 4-H members and fellow leaders have continued on with the program ever since. Valhalla and Beaverlodge 4-H Clubs are proud to have raised over $187,360.00 and donated to over 51 charities during this time.

This year all the monies raised from the Delwyn Postman Memorial Donation Steer Raffle, as well as any outright donations, will be going to charities that were meaningful to and chosen by

the 4-H members. For 2016, these charities are the Beaverlodge Hospital, the LaGlace New Arena Project and the Valhalla Recreation Centre.

Each fall, a business or family donates a steer to the West County 4-H and, alternating from year to year, a family from Beaverlodge or Valhalla volunteers to raise the animal.

This involves feeding it twice daily, caring for it, halter breaking it and presenting it for the sale. This year we have a Charolais cross steer donated by Glen Moodie of Meadowville Holdings.

The feed and care have been provided by Kelvin, Kim, Kelly, Kyle and Kody Moodie of the Valhalla Club.

This year’s raffle brought in nearly $6,000 with the winning ticket being purchased by Jean Gibson of Kelowna, B.C. Jean is an aunt of the Schweitzer club members from Beaverlodge.

Central Peace 4-H champions, results Cloverbuds and 4-H’ers from the Eaglesham, Savanna and EastWest Woking clubs met in Spirit River on Wednesday, June 1 for their annual Achievement Day Show & Sale.

Approximately 40 club members showed their steers, heifers and calves while 13 sheep were presented and 7 rabbits competed for the coveted Grand Champion ribbons.

North Peace 4-H Interclub 4-H members representing the Fairview Livestock 4-H Club and the Montagneuse Multi 4-H Club met at the J. Hawker Pavilion at Fairview College on Monday, June 6th for their annual Show & Sale. Both had their achievement days on the preceding weekend, so it was show time and sale day for the over two dozen steers, heifers and calves, twelve sheep and six hog projects the respective members have been preparing over the past twelve months.

Grand Champion went to Owen Salmond while Bailee Richardson brought the Reserve Champion ribbon home.

The organizers would like to thank Beef Conformation judges Roy Bjorklund, Tom Basnett and Jo Merservy, Beef Showmanship judge Tom Lofthouse, Sheep Conformation and Showmanship judge Ryan Gauthier and Ringman, Tom Salmond for stepping forward to officiate the event.

2016 AB average farm input prices Part II Last week week presented the first round of Alberta average farm prices. This week, part two. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Statistics and Data Development Section has carried out a monthly survey of prices for selected Alberta farm inputs. The prices are collected by the Alberta Federation of Agriculture in partnership with the Statistics and Data Development Sec-

tion.

Periodically, a comprehensive review of the survey is undertaken, to ensure that the inputs monitored are relevant and consistent with Alberta’s current farming practices, and that there is adequate coverage across the province.

Most recently, a comprehensive review of the survey in 2011 resulted in the number of farm inputs increasing

from 53 to 56. Effective 2012, the revised list of farm inputs includes several new inputs, while some of the old inputs were dropped or modified.

Monthly average prices reported are intended to serve as a guide only. As of April 1, 2009, this project was sponsored by Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial agreement.

SPRAYERS:

Mulching is a common method whereby the discharge chute is blocked off and baffles are installed around the blades. This keeps the clippings within the deck, and cuts them up ten times smaller than the regular clippings that are discharged out the side of the mower. This provides a great source of slow-release nitrogen for your lawn keeping it greener for longer.

It sounds too good to be true.

No bagging, no raking, no hassle and it’s good for your lawn!

Avoid mulching if your clippings are over 1 inch. This would result in an abundance of clippings on your lawn. This would take longer to break down and may lead to a thatch problem.

We do suggest aerating and dethatching your lawn at the start of every season when mulching.

Side discharge is the easiest and most convenient way to mow. If you don’t mind the clippings on the ground, or don’t require a more manicured look, side discharge is the way to mow.

No extra equipment needed on your mower either!

CONTINUED FROM LAST ISSUE The first step in the management of acid soils is to identify the extent and severity of the problem. Poor yields of acid sensitive crops may indicate an acid soil condition, but soil tests are the only sure method of identifying an acidity problem.

With careful sampling of fields, soil

tests can determine the extent and severity of soil acidity, the rate of lime required, and provide an estimate of crop response to lime. An estimate of crop response along with the cost of lime provides a basis for assessing the economics of liming.

Each field that is to be limed should be carefully

sampled. Divide a field into areas on the basis of soil type or differences in crop growth and sample each of these areas separately. Some areas of a field may require higher rates than others and some areas may not require any. A lime requirement test should be requested in order to determine the amount of lime re-

In some cases, growing crops that are more tolerant to acidity is an alternative to liming. But as soils gradually become more acid, the choice of crops becomes very limited.

The long-term goal should be to lime soils to a pH value best suited to the crops being grown. After a desired soil pH has been achieved, the amount of lime required to maintain soils in a suitable pH range will depend on fertilizer rates, soil type and cropping practices.

The rate of lime required depends on the amount of pH change that is re-

quired and the buffering capacity of the soil.

Buffering capacity refers to the amount of lime required to

change pH a given amount.

Sandy soils and soils low in organic matter have low buffering capacities.

Notice of Comment NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) North Montney Project Request for Extension of Sunset Clause The National Energy Board (NEB or Board) is in receipt of the request from NGTL dated 28 March 2016 for a one-year extension of the sunset clause in NGTL’s Certificate GC-125 authorizing the Project. If the request were approved, the Certificate would expire on 10 June 2017, unless construction of the project had commenced by that date.

NGTL has requested that the Board rely on the wording of condition 45 in the Certificate to allow it to extend the sunset clause without approval from the Governor-in-Council under section 21 of the National Energy Board Act (NEB Act).

Condition 45 of the Certificate states “Unless the Board otherwise directs prior to 10 June 2016, this Certificate will expire on 10 June 2016, unless construction in respect of the Section 52 Facility has commenced by that date.” The length of the requested extension is not minor and there is adequate time to consider it and allow the variance that the Board may approve, if any, to be referred to GIC for approval.

In view of the above, the Board will consider the request as an application to vary the Certificate pursuant to section 21 of the NEB Act. If the Board grants the variance requested, it will not be effective until approved by GIC. Prior to making any decisions on the request, the Board has decided to solicit public comments on the following question: What issues and information should the Board consider in deciding on the request?

NGTL has provided reasons for making the request. The Board would be interested in hearing comments on those reasons, whether other issues should also be considered, and if additional information should be required. Interested parties are encouraged to provide any information that they recommend the Board consider in deciding on the request.

The Board found that the Project is in the public interest after the GH-001-2014 hearing. The Board does not intend to rehear issues that it already has decided.

The Board will accept public comments until 8 July 2016. The Board will allow NGTL to submit reply comments by 29 July 2016.

No application to participate is required. Comments may be submitted by electronic submission (e-file), fax, or mail. Email is not a valid method of submitting comments to the Board. Please note that the Board will not accept late submissions or form letters.

MyMaintenance joins growing list of mobile apps The new John Deere MyMaintenance mobile application takes preventative maintenance and repairs to the next level for construction maintenance managers. The app enables users to view and document maintenance intervals by calendar date or by machine engine hours right on the jobsite or in the workshop.

“The MyMaintenance app gives users a plethora of information at their fingertips, including the ability to view equipment on a map, look at machines nearby, barcode scan a machine to see maintenance plans, access a parts list for maintenance and the ability to keep track of maintenance costs,” said Paul Garcia, product manager, John Deere WorkSight.

“The application allows managers to view machines enrolled in a plan through Maintenance Manager that are due or past due for maintenance to efficiently increase uptime and performance. Repairs can also be documented even for machines not enrolled in a maintenance plan, and documenting a machine’s maintenance history can help drive higher residual value.”

Canola oil can help Chinese consumers meet the new dietary guidelines released by the Chinese Nutrition Society, said Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, at an event today celebrating a new Sino-Canadian partnership.

Canola is the number two imported oilseed and number three imported cooking oil in China, which leads the world in vegetable oil consumption.

The guidelines advise consumers to keep total fat intake to 20-30 percent of total daily calories. They also recommend up to 30 grams (2 tablespoons) of cooking oil per day for most ages; for children ages 4-7 no more than 25 grams and for 2-year olds, 20 grams.

Trans fat intake should be minimized by everyone at no more than 2 grams per day.

“Low in saturated fat with zero trans fat, canola oil is an ideal source of fat for Chinese consumers,” noted Bruce Jowett, vice president of market development for the Canola Council of Canada.

“Moreover, scientific studies show that canola oil reduces the risk of heart disease when used in place of saturated fat. Considering canola oil accounts for 9 percent of China’s vegetable oil imports today, it is already contributing to the nation’s health.”

“A variety of cooking oils, including canola oil, fit into China’s new dietary guidelines,” said Dr. Du Songming, president assistant of the Chinese Nutrition Society.

“Using vegetable oil instead of solid fat for everyday cooking is an easy change consumers can make to increase the intake of unsaturated fat and reduce the intake of saturated fat. This will help decrease their risk of heart disease.”

Canola oil has about half the saturated fat (7%) of sunflower (12%), olive (15%), soybean (15%) and groundnut/peanut (19%) oils – and the most plant-based omega-3 fat (11%) of all common cooking oils. Canola oil is also extremely versatile with a neutral flavour and colour, light texture and high heat tolerance (smoke point of 242 °C/368 °F). These many benefits cost only a few jiaos per serving.

Canada is the primary supplier of canola to China, Jowett noted. It exported nearly 4 million tonnes of canola seed and 608,000 tonnes of oil there in 2015 alone.
