July tough month for grain
For the second consecutive year, Evergreen Park played host to the 2016 Alberta Derby. The Alberta Derby is a mile and 1/6 race between three-year-olds with prize money of over $50,000.The event was held in conjunction with the Grande Prairie Derby and Peace Country Futurity. RON CARTIER PhOTO
Grain markets have generally followed a disappointing path lower throughout July. The situation remains a frustratingly bearish challenge. For years, we talked about a bearish fundamental structure to the wheat market, which never seems to resolve itself as another record crop comes over the horizon each year. Along with wheat, oilseeds, cereals and pulses have not much fresh news to report. North American weather is generally good, crop ratings are good and yields in Canada and the United States are probably going to exceed current official government estimates. Chicago soybean futures are down about $1.60 a bushel since the start of the month and have become technically oversold. Traders will continue to monitor weather forecasts heading into the key development month of August. While price action should begin to see some stabilization and flattening of any further trending lower action, strength potential will also face limitation given continuing large crop prospects. Winnipeg canola futures are trading at about $75 a tonne off their highs of mid-June.
The general theme of favourable crop conditions in Western Canada has weighed mightily on futures, along with the bearish spillover influence of declining grain markets overall. Canola looks oversold near-term, with recent action taking prices to their lowest levels for a front-month contract since the end of February. In fact, this region around the $440 to $450 a tonne has been key support on the weekly chart for the past 18 months. Canola futures should be due for a bounce. The overhanging weight on the canola market remains bearish sentiment on crop potential. Variable conditions reported by growers across Western Canada, but traders believe a big crop is coming. After lowly projections of below 16 million tonnes ahead of seeding, trade ideas have ramped steadily higher from 17 to now 19 to 20 million tonnes. July and August are typically the most competitive points in wheat’s seasonal price cycle. Even with imperfections like quality downgrading seen globally or a smaller French wheat crop, the perception and statistical backdrop of large world supply persists.

Drones revolutionizing agriculture Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)—better known as drones—have been used commercially since the early 1980s. The total addressable value of drone-powered solutions in all applicable industries is significant—more than $127 billion, according to a recent PwC analysis. Among the most promising areas is agriculture, where drones offer the potential for addressing several major challenges. With the world’s population projected to reach 9 billion people by 2050, experts expect agricultural consumption to increase
by nearly 70 percent over the same time period. In addition, extreme weather events are on the rise, creating additional obstacles to productivity. Agricultural producers must embrace revolutionary strategies for producing food, increasing productivity, and making sustainability a priority. Drones are part of the solution, along with closer collaboration between governments, technology leaders, and industry. 1. Soil and field analysis: Drones can be instrumental at the start of the crop cycle. 2. Planting: Startups have created drone-
planting systems that achieve an uptake rate of 75 percent and decrease planting costs by 85 percent. 3. Crop spraying: Distance-measuring equipment—ultrasonic echoing and lasers such as those used in the light-detection and ranging, or LiDAR, method—enables a drone to adjust altitude as the topography and geography vary, and thus avoid collisions. 4. Crop monitoring: Vast fields and low efficiency in crop monitoring together create farming’s largest obstacle. 5. Irrigation: Drones can identify which parts of a field are dry or need improvements.

Breakfast Brief Welcome to Reality
Grains entered the month of August with little fanfare as the market continues to sit at multi-year lows. Hedge funds continue to pile on their bearish bets in the grain markets, especially on wheat and corn which are sitting at net short positions that are echoing last summer. Most analysts are now conceding that the weather that’s on the horizon in August is unlikely to provide many problems for U.S. soybean development, likely leading to more reduction in managed money’s long positions. Those betting on corn are also under the gun that is a large crop in the U.S. and also that there’s a lot of wheat in the U.S. that will compete with it in the feed market. Simply put, there are new supply realities here in North America that the market now has to work through.
WHEAT - CPSR #2 - 11.0
Globally, the Black Sea harvest is ahead of last year’s pace with average yields anywhere from 5-10% better than a year ago. As such, Russian and Ukrainian grain production estimates continue to rise. To the west in the European Union, the wheat market is trading a little sideways until there’s a full understanding of the quality of the crop coming off. While German producer organizations have suggested a 10-20% drop in wheat production there, France looks to be coming in below 30 million tonnes. As far as the E.U. rapeseed harvest goes, Strategie Grains cut its estimate for the 3rd straight month to 20.7 milliontonnes, mainly due to cuts in France, Poland, & Germany. As such, import forecasts for rapeseed/canola in 2016/17 was increased by Strategie Grains to 3.3 million tonnes and the International Grains Council to 3 million tonnes, both a healthy improvement from last year’s 2.86 million tonnes imported by the bloc.

Speaking of imports, it’s been suggested that with the big crop coming off in the U.S., American exports are poised to increase. While North American wheat still has to compete with currency and geography effects against the Black Sea, futures markets are trading at a discount to Paris bourses. For U.S. corn, Brazil may need some but it’s likely they’ll source from Ukraine, Argentina, or Paraguay first. The real bullish factor we’re watching for is La Nina affecting South American planting conditions in the 4th quarter of 2016. The “Little Girl” tends to bring wetter-than-normal conditions to northern Brazil but cooler temperatures and drier weather to eastern and southern states. Similar dry weather is possible in Argentina, which is currently seeing a delay in their wheat planting because of persistent rains. At this point, if we don’t see above average yields in the majority of crops grown in North America this year, it would be a shock. Recent yield estimates for corn and soybeans has been as high as 175 and 48.8 bushels per acre (U.S.D.A. at 168 and 46.7 respectively). Should these numbers materialize, there’s a lot more risk to the downside yet to play out in corn and soybeans in our opinion. Add in that oil prices are moving back to April levels, while cash prices in Western Canada may be near or start to stabilizing in some crops, those trying to catch the falling knife in the futures markets face the harsh reality of potentially being badly cut. Canada Western Feed, Canada Western General Purpose and Canada Western Interim wheat classes will be eliminated. Poor colour has been added to the definition for degree of soundness for Oats, No. 4 Canada Western. The Official Grain Grading Guide, including the new primary grade determinant tables, will be posted on the Canadian Grain Commission’s website on July 29, 2016 and will come into effect August 1, 2016. A new moisture table for Great Northern White Beans took effect, July 1, 2016, as well as a new procedure for estimating moisture in Yellow Beans.
Procedures for producer railway cars will be available on the Canadian Grain Commission’s website on July 29, 2016 and are effective August 1, 2016. The western and eastern standards committees meet twice a year to recommend specifications for grades of grain, and to select and recommend standard and guide samples to the Canadian Grain Commission. Members represent all stakeholders in the grain industry and include producers, grain processors, grain handlers and exporters. On August 1, 2016, these wheat classes will be eliminated: Canada Western Interim Wheat, Canada Western General Purpose and Canada Western Feed. Varieties in the Canada Western Interim Wheat class will move to the Canada Northern Hard Red class and varieties in the Canada Western General Purpose and Canada Western Feed classes will move to the Canada Western Special Purpose class.

pasture including thrush, hoof abscesses and foot rot. Moist wet conditions soften the structures of the foot and provide ideal conditions for bacterial and fungal infections. Hoof abscesses can occur in any animal with hooves and can be incredibly painful. It is not uncommon for a client to contact the clinic because they think their horse has broken a leg. Fortunately, many of these horses end up having a hoof abscess rather than a fracture. A hoof abscess is caused by some form of foreign material (dirt, sand and bacteria) getting trapped under the hoof wall and developing a localized infection resulting in a build- up of pus under the hoof wall. This is usually caused from a break or fissure in the white line (hoof wall/sole junction), a misplaced nail or puncture wound anywhere in the sole or a full thickness hoof wall crack. The hoof wall is unable to expand as pus develops under it leading to a build-up of pressure resulting in extreme pain and severe lameness. There also may be heat in the foot area or heat and swelling in the leg. When an animal presents with a potential hoof abscess we diagnose it by hoof testing the sole. Typically there will be an area along the white line (along the hoof wall) that is very sensitive when pinched (hoof testing). Treatment usually entails opening up the abscess on the sole of the foot to relieve the pressure and allow the built up fluid to drain. Some abscesses will travel under the hoof wall and drain at the coronet band. Once a horse hoof abscess has been drained, treatment will involve soaking the foot with warm water and Epsom salts, applying a poultice to the foot to draw out the infection and in some cases applying a special shoe and pad or a medicine plate to protect the area. In cattle we often open up the abscess and then apply a special block to the normal claw so the cow can walk comfortably without bearing weight
on the painful toe. Abscesses generally heal quite quickly and a complete recovery is generally achieved however, some cases can involve deeper structures which involves more aggressive and complex treatment, therefore seeking veterinary care for dealing with these cases is always encouraged. Pain medication is also often administered. Thrush is a condition that occurs in horses and usually involves the frog area of the foot. It is more common in horses that are standing in wet dirty ground. There is also more risk if the horse has underlying hoof abnormalities such as contracted heels, lameness or overgrown frogs because the normal cleaning processes that occur with weight bearing and movement don’t work properly. It can also occur when certain types of shoes or pads are used which don’t allow the foot to dry out. The condition is usually recognizable by black very smelly discharge in the area of the frog. The horse will be somewhat sensitive in the heel and frog area and may be slightly lame. Typically treatment involves trimming excessive frog material, cleaning the affected area with a dilute iodine solution or applying a thrush medication and moving the horse into a cleaner and dryer environment. Foot rot in cattle (and sheep and goats) is usually a result of trauma to the skin between the claws (toes), which allows bacteria found in dirt and manure to get into the skin and cause an infection. This is called Interdigital Dermatitis. Rocks, bush, stubble grazing or rough hard ground can cause the initial trauma. When there has been a lot of rain we typically see more of this disease because the moisture softens the skin and then as the mud dries up there are usually rough uneven surfaces that damage the skin. Foot rot is not a contagious disease and usually responds to antibiotics and moving the animals onto ground that isn’t causing trauma to the soft tissues of the feet. There is also vaccine available for this condition. In some cases if the condition is not treated, infection can advance into the deeper structures of the foot and affect joints, tendons and ligaments which may require veterinary attention. Sheep and goats can get another form of “foot rot” which is very different in that it is a contagious disease that can be spread between animals. It is usually caused by a bacteria called Dichelobacter nodosus (although other bacteria may be involved as well). This bacteria goes into the tissues of the foot and can cause severe swelling and lameness. It can also cause deformities of the hoof. In very severe cases the hoof may separate from the underlying tissues. The bacteria that causes sheep “foot rot” can survive in the environment for up to 2 weeks and its spread is worsened by warm, moist conditions. The bacteria can also survive in the feet of sheep for up to three years, making its control very difficult. Its treatment can be very expensive and time consuming and it is a disease you want to prevent rather than treat. Prevention involves not introducing this bacteria to your flock or farm! This means that any new sheep you purchase are carefully checked and screened for any signs of lameness or foot deformity and are purchased from a reliable source. Also try to minimize contact of your sheep with any others. Showing and community pastures may make this difficult. If you have any questions regarding any of the above conditions or any other health related topics, please contact your veterinarian.

The Viking is a new multi-season vertical tillage tool crements) for maximum residue management in heavy residue conditions. Further, these machines are able to run in a wide variety of soil, residue, and field conditions with the ability to chop, cut and size crop residue and move the soil and crop residue vertically with minimal soil compaction, and the ability to be less invasive while dealing with high residue conditions. Approach designed as a year-round multiuse tillage tool, the Viking offers the flexibility for pre-season and post-season use.
Spring: 0” - 3” deep to warm/dry/aerate soil; a secondary tillage pass to prepare/firm up seedbed after another primary tillage tool has been over the ground. Also for use in working down crop residue remaining after the previous season, or to incorporate manure or fertilizer into the soil. Fall: For use in residue management instead of, or ahead of primary tillage, to manage heavy residue - to cut/chop/mix residue into the top 3” - 5” of soil; use in place of a heavy harrow to address down/lodged crop residue, clean up field edges, slough bottoms or wet areas. For incorporating manure or fertilized manure; level and spread out heavy crop residue; or cut and condition residue to help improve crop residue decay and reduce insect and disease concerns. Adjustable gang angle (from 0 to 16 degrees) for use in a wide range of residue and
field conditions. Setup for minimum disturbance / leave maximum residue on the surface or aggressive residue management to mix soil with crop residue. Choice of blade spacing and blade size: 8” spacing with 20” or 22” blades that cuts & sizes residue into smaller pieces; 9” spacing with 22” or 24” blades in higher residue applications with more space between blades for residue flow. Industry leading gang technology: 3,200 ft-lbs of torque, standard and extreme-duty bearings that provide maximum up-time and lower overall cost of ownership. Heavy-duty machine with industry leading 800 lbs/ft (weight class) to ensure sufficient blade penetration in the most difficult field conditions. Choice of finishing attachments; spiral flat-bar rolling baskets or 3-bar coil tine harrows to prepare an excellent seedbed.

ward trajectory trading $3-$5 below week-ago levels. Erratic buying interest resulted in inconsistent price action across the Prairies which made the market difficult to define. Smaller groups of various quality cattle were on offer, justifying the softer tone, but feedlot operators demonstrated unwavering fortitude even on genetically premium built cattle. There’s a nauseating view on the market these days as cattle feeders wear off the venomous sting from the last round of feeding. The deferred live cattle futures bounced off the contract lows, but this did little to rejuvenate the melancholy attitude. Mixed steers averaging around 950 lbs. were quoted in the range of $166-$172 in central and southern Alberta. Steers averaging 800-825 lbs. with no special features were quoted from $175 to $183 across the Prairies. The market was relatively even from central Alberta to southern Manitoba, with the southern regions generating more market activity. Slightly larger than

normal freight discounts were noted in the northern regions of Alberta and B.C., but this was likely due to limited cattle available. There was no flourish of trumpets for calves this week. The focus will be on yearlings over the next month so buyers appeared to shy away and discount calves. Quotes from southern Alberta and southern Manitoba had steers averaging 550 lbs. in the range of $205-$210; heifers of similar weight were formulated from $180 to $185. Alberta packers were buying fed cattle from $144 to $146 which is near breakeven pen closeout levels. U.S. wholesale choice beef prices dipped below the psychological price of $200/cwt — the first time since December 2015. This should enhance beef movement through the retail pipeline. Feed barley in southern Alberta traded from $175 to $180 this past week, which is bringing down the cost per pound gain. All these factors may stabilize the feeder market in the short term.

The secret to getting the best steak for your barbecue When it comes to barbecue, steak on the grill is a passion for most, a hobby for some and a primal urge for many. But it takes more than a love of fire to master the grill.
well over three-quarters of beef shoppers reporting they buy the same few cuts over and over. If their “go-to cut” is not available, about half don’t know what beef cut to try as an alternate.
It turns out there is one basic step that is often overlooked that can make you a grill hero or have you hand in your tongs.
“Limited knowledge about cuts means less freedom to choose between options in price and taste experiences — so consumers miss out on some terrific options for grilling,” said Parslow. “Canadians should explore options like the top sirloin cap steak — a moderately priced flavourful grilling steak that’s sized just right to serve with a side of in-season vegetables. “Buy what you need,” adds Parslow, noting that understanding what steaks work best on the grill and what ones don’t is key to getting the best eating experience and value for the money.
Selecting the “right steak for the job” is the make-or-break moment. Although there are three basic cooking categories for steaks (Grilling, Marinating and Simmering Steaks), Canada Beef ’s national survey of beef-buying Canadians found that over one in two beef shoppers don’t think to consider the “type” of steak they need to buy that works best for the grill. The purchase decision is primarily made on price and the size and shape of the steak. Most shoppers make the assumption that all steaks are equal and then use the same cooking method for all,” said Joyce Parslow, professional home economist and director of Consumer Relations, Canada Beef. “It’s pretty simple but often misunderstood: a steak is not a steak. Simmering Steaks like a top blade are amazing when done in the slow cooker where they tenderize nicely, but they are definitely going to be a disappointment if cooked on the grill.”

The straight up lowdown on preconditioning calves Can you make money preconditioning feeder calves? The answer depends on whom you talk to. Attendees at a University of Calgary conference last month were told about an Indiana producer who pocketed an extra $80 per calf by preconditioning his animals. “The producer realized that the more days he preconditioned those calves, the more money he made,” Dr. Mark Hilton, a veterinarian with Elanco Animal Health, said at the U of C Veterinary Medicine Beef Cattle Conference. But most Alberta producers aren’t fully preconditioning — a practice where a feeder calf is vaccinated, castrated, weaned, and

fed from a feed bunk — because there’s not a strong economic incentive, said Dr. Cody Creelman of Veterinary Agri-Health Services in Airdrie. “Guys are very, very hesitant to keep their cattle around if they’re doing a preconditioning program where those cows are backgrounded for a little bit post-weaning before they’re shipped off — introduced to a bunk, introduced to stored feed and water troughs,” said Creelman. “They say, ‘If one animal dies, that’s basically my entire profit margin for doing this preconditioning.’ They like to defer their risk in terms of mortality to the feedlot.” However, these two views aren’t irreconcilable — rather it’s all about the specifics, and the economics, of individual operations. In the case of the Indiana producer, who was the subject of an 11-year research project, “the profit was directly tied to average daily gain,” said Hilton. “The big deal in dollars with preconditioning calves is putting weight on those calves efficiently,” he said. Newly weaned cattle are “pretty darn efficient at putting a pound of gain on,” but as their weights go up, so too do the costs per pound of gain. As a result, producers are generally better off taking advantage of those ‘cheap’ gains, he said. “Our cost of gain was very reasonable on these calves.” At the beginning of the project, the average daily gain was 1.2 pounds, but as the producer tweaked the feed ration and gained more experience with preconditioning, he “pushed three pounds a day of gain once we got those calves on a ration that r0011177123

HERD BULLS:
was really good,” said Hilton. “Weight gain the first year was 58 pounds, and by the end (of the study), we were putting 200 pounds on these calves. That’s what really paid for him.” And as he added more days of feeding for those calves, his profit “tended to go up.” “We started out feeding these calves for 48 days, and then he decided that feeding for 70 days made him a lot more money.” But even with the increased gain and preconditioning bonus, his profitability “really changed a lot over the years,” said Hilton, adding that feed costs were the No. 1 reason for that. The biggest barrier for most Alberta producers is that auction marts don’t pay extra for preconditioned calves. “Cow-calf producers are right in saying, ‘I’m not sure if I’m getting an appropriate premium for all the work I’m putting in to do the preconditioning.’ That’s a very fair statement,” said Creelman. “What you would need to do is figure out for yourself what that cost actually is.” Producers are often guilty of not knowing their breakeven costs, but it’s critical in a preconditioning program. “Most importantly as a cow-calf producer, you have to know your true input costs and figure out what works best for your 3rd Annual Bull Salemight be really good system,” said Creelman. “Preconditioning for one person and they can make money at it, but they may not be able to do it in another system. “Before you implement a program, know what the cost is to do preconditioning.”

Dusty Acre Blondes Home to the first Homozygous Polled in Dawson Creek, BC, Canada I would like to say hello and welcome you to our Blonde d’Aquitaine operation. I fell in love with the breed when my mom and dad first bought them in the 90’s. It took me a couple years to convince Dave to let me buy some registered females. Well he opened a door I am not sure either one of us were ready for. Our registered herd is now over 100 cows which 41 is homozygous polled. We have bought our females from West Wind Blondes from Stavely Ab. They are known world wide for their homozygous polled animals and have shipped semen all over. They were the only ones in Canada with the homozygous polled but have retired and we bought their animals. We currently have one of our homozygous bulls down at Balzac Ab., right now getting semen drawn because there is a blonde breeder in Australia that has bought exclusive semen rights on him there. The winter of 2015/2016 I decided to do my own bull test at home and was that ever a learning curve. But all in all my boys did good, I had six on test and the finishing ADG was 3.31lbs. Two of the bulls here in the ad we are taking down to the blonde show in Olds Ab., in Sept. I look forward to doing another bull test this winter and I will be selling them off the farm again. I have all the animals on Bio Beef so we have a full Dusty Acre Colby herd evaluation on EPD’s which I really like. Kaylyn and I will also be at the Beef Congress in Dawson Creek in Jan., 2017 with some animals. I am also looking forward to Kaylyn’s 4-H projects this fall, she wants to take in one of her registered heifers and a steer again. I would also like to thank the people who bought my bulls this spring as I would not be able to do this without you guys. I would also like to thank Mike and Zoe Ross from the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic for purchasing Kaylyn’s steer. Double polled, picture taken July 30, 2016 Shellie weight at 18 months is 1412 lbs. I’d like to thank Mike and Zoe Ross for buying my steer Clifford. This was my first year in 4-H with the Groundbirch 4Hmuliti Club, Everyone got to learn lots. I had tons of fun working with everyone and getting to know them. Achievement day was the hardest day, but it was also an amazing day. You get to see all your hard work be paid off LITERALLY! On the achievement day I won 1st in showmanship, 1st in grooming, And Clifford won me the reserve grand champion steer. Clifford’s mom was a Red Angus/Hereford and his father was a Blonde d’Aquitaine. Kaylyn

Bee populations buzz up By Craig Lester
NEW ARRIVALS FOR DISMANTLING
COMPLETE STRAIGHT CUT HEADERS FOR SALE
Beekeepers across Alberta have reason to continue to smile as the number of bee colonies in the province continues to trend upward. According to a survey by the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists the number of colonies this year has reached 295,000 up from 283,000 a year ago. One reason for the continued growth is low winter mortality rates, which hovered around 10 per cent in recent years, compared to the national average of 16 per cent. Mortality rates in the United States reached 23 per cent. The past winter was particularly good one for bees across the Prairies as it was mild and spring weather was favourable. Commercial beekeepers Reece and Echo Chandler run one of the largest operation in the country out of Scandia, Alta. Reece says keeping bees alive through the
winter months is one of the hardest challenges they face. While the number of commercial operators has grown modestly recently, he says the growth of hobbyists has exploded, which is exciting. “The country, and the world for that matter, has really realized how important bees are to humans, with a lot of bee losses down in the states there was a lot of media attention on the bee losses, so now people really want to help the bees, Chandler says. The Alberta Government estimates farm cash receipts for honey sales and pollination service fees totalled $75 million and another $650 million is generated from sales of pedigreed hybrid canola and canola crop production, which are pollinated by bees every year. Alberta is the fifth largest producer of honey in the world.

Canadian and U.S. agriculture: Why the different outlooks matter Courtesy Farm Credit Canada Given the high degree of integration between U.S. and Canadian agricultural markets, why the difference? And, does this suggest risk for Canadian producers? The low CAD/USD helps Canada, hurts the U.S. The CAD/USD exchange rate is currently 19% below the five-year average. The depreciation instantly bumps the prices Canadian producers receive for many commodities priced in the U.S. market, which are then converted at a more favourable exchange rate. A stronger USD is also usually associated with weaker commodity prices: the stronger USD lowers the purchasing power of buyers in international markets and leads to a decline in demand. Yet the demand for some commodities remained surprisingly resilient over the last 12 months: corn prices have held steady and soybeans prices even moved higher. When U.S. prices fall (e.g. cattle, wheat), the lower Canadian dollar offers some protection. Weather has uniquely threatened U.S. ag. Dry conditions hurt part of the Prairies’ production in 2015 but Canadian ag production has otherwise been consistent; and in some years, it far exceeded recent annual targets. But in the U.S., five years of severe drought have affected California’s agricultural production and lowered producers’ revenues. In 2015, California dairy and livestock

drought-related losses amounted to an estimated US$350 million (or 2.8% of revenues). These losses have been compounded by global market conditions. Starting just prior to 2015, world dairy prices have declined more than 30%. This has hit the U.S., the world’s largest single-country dairy exporter, much harder than Canadian producers. Canada seems to have picked up some of the opportunities: Canadian exports of edible vegetables grew between 2006 and 2012 at an average annual rate of 7.3%, but between 2012 and 2015, exports increased at an average annual rate of 25.9%. At the same time, international demand is growing for crops with a decided Canadian advantage. Canada is the world’s largest exporter of legumes and canola seed, and in 2015, Canada overtook the U.S. as the world’s largest wheat exporter, thanks in part to the CAD/USD difference. Pulse exports alone are currently red hot. Just like a lower Canadian dollar raises the prices received by producers, it also can work to raise the price of farm inputs they purchased. But not all inputs used on Canadian farms are priced in U.S. dollars. Statistics Canada reported that farm input prices declined by 2.1% in the first quarter of 2016. In comparison, farm input prices increased 0.8% on average in the U.S. over the same period.

Mosaic CEO sees opportunities to buy miners’ fertilizer assets Reuters — Miners that produce a diverse commodity mix may be willing to part with fertilizer assets, creating buying opportunities for producers of potash and phosphate, Mosaic Co. CEO Joc O’Rourke said Tuesday. Profits of fertilizer producers have tumbled because of falling prices, weak currencies in importing countries such as Brazil and excessive supplies. Mosaic, the world’s largest producer of finished phosphate products, reported lowerthan-expected adjusted profit on Tuesday as crop nutrient prices remained weak. But the
company joined larger rival PotashCorp in saying that the worst was over. Bigger miners may be unwilling to wait for recovery, O’Rourke said in an interview. Some of them question whether fertilizer fits their core portfolios as they look to sell assets and pay down debt, he said. “We think some of these opportunities might come to fruition, and if they do, they may add some long-term value to us,” O’Rourke said. Reuters reported in June that Plymouth, Minn.-based Mosaic was in talks to buy Vale
SA’s fertilizer unit, in a renewed push to grow in South America and Africa. O’Rourke declined to comment on any talks with Vale. Mosaic shares jumped 2.8 per cent at $27.37, after executives told analysts that better demand was ahead in the second half (all figures US$). Mosaic expects sales volume and prices of phosphate and potash to rise in the current quarter from the second quarter. Potash volumes would be helped by a longoverdue 2016 sales agreement between Chinese buyers and Canpotex Ltd., the offshore sales arm of North America’s Mosaic, PotashCorp, and Agrium. Some rivals have already settled at a sharply lower price of $219 per tonne, and the focus of Canpotex negotiations now is on volume,
O’Rourke said. “Once the price gets set, that is the price, and your participation choice is how much volume” to commit, O’Rourke said. Mosaic reported a net loss of $10.2 million, or three cents per share, for the second quarter, compared with a profit of $390.6 million, or $1.08 per share, a year earlier. Excluding certain items, profit was six cents per share, compared with analysts’ average estimate of 12 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Revenue fell 32.7 per cent to $1.67 billion. Mosaic said it would slash its 2016 capital budget and cut other expenses to preserve cash. The company idled production in July at its Colonsay, Sask. potash mine for the rest of 2016.

This is how you can conserve water on the farm By Treena Hein As urban centres expand, pressure on water usage also grows – and farmers can feel the pinch. On a dairy farm, water is consumed by cows and also used heavily to wash, clean and cool the facility. Dr. Andy VanderZaag at the science and technology branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa says estimates of the water footprint of the global dairy industry vary depending which water sources are included. Estimates, though, are that six to 19 per cent of the global water use of all animal production, second only to beef. Global estimates The range of average global estimates of water used to produce one litre of milk is 20 to 1,000 litres, again depending on which types of water use are included. But how much of that can be conserved, and what is the current thinking of Ontario dairy farmers on the topic of water conservation?
Ritchie Bros. auctioneers and bid counters hold court. DAN PRZYBYLSKI PhOTO
VanderZaag has sought some initial answers to these questions recently with technician Steve Burtt at AAFC Ottawa, Drs. Timothy Rennie and Vern Osborne and Masters student Alex Robinson at the University of Guelph, and Dr. Robert Gordon at Wilfred Laurier University. The work was supported by several farms, the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, Dairy Farmers of Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the University of Guelph. Future concerns The majority of dairy farmers surveyed agreed that possible future water restrictions were a concern and that government programs should specifically target on-farm water conservation. “There were a wide range of opinions, but overall most farmers were quite open to water conservation as a current or potentially future priority,” VanderZaag says. “However, they don’t want to be taxed as an inducement to use less water.” Dairy efficiencies The dairy farm water consumption studies indicate that free-stall dairy automated milking systems use more cleaning water daily than conventional milking systems in tie-stall and free-stall operations. How much volume reduction can be achieved depends on the individual facility, Robinson says. “One initial recommendation would be to install water meters and monitor them on a regular basis,” Robinson says. “Being able to know how much water you use is a great stepping stone to future change.”

THE BIG BEND Fourth Creek was our homestead starting in 1967 By George Agrey Robert Agrey first applied for his homestead in 1967. It consisted of ½ section located
the east half of 11-81, range 9. June Agrey, his wife applied for her homestead three years later. After accumulating this land Bob decided to clear some land and rent his homestead out. In 1971 he cleared 200 acres on his homestead and 180 acres on his wife’s homestead. After was done he started to rent out his land. Bob Paul rented it for a few years but found out it was not very profitable, so the Agreys decided to move up and farm it themselves. The years before Bob moved his family up, he made a preliminary trip and tried to get the land in shape. He had a hired hand for awhile but he quit. The next summer, after school was out, he moved his family up to the farm. The first year he and his family cleaned up one hundred acres by picking the roots and rocks off. There was already 100 acres in crop and this would make it 200 for the following year. The fall came and he had his crops custom combined. The winter came and there wasn’t too much to do, so Bob bought six range cows.

Guy Walker: grew up on father’s farm, moved to area in 1983 Guy Walker’s land location was the northeast corner of 3180-7-W6 He grew up on his father’s farm south of Sylvan Lake and graduated from Sylvan Lake High School in 1973. He was a member of the Ridgewood 4H Beef Club and following high school, completed an Aircraft Maintenance Technology Program at SAIT in Calgary, finishing an apprenticeship in Wardair in Edmonton. He was with the company for two years before it was consolidated to Toronto. He then wrote his Ministry of Transport exams or Aircraft Maintenance Engineers licenses, which allowed him to sign air-
craft as air worthy after maintenance. This included turbine power and pressurized aircraft. He famed with his father between jobs in Claresholm and as base engineer and Penhold. AT Penhold he obtained a private pilot’s license t o allow him to perform text flights. With the aircraft industry being too sensitive in the economy, Walker, wanted to farm in an are that would let him farm without an unreason able amount of debt and give him room to expand. He bought his first farm from Ron Bruneau with a view of Hamlin Creek from the south side of his property. He took possession in August of 1983.

42 The Northern Horizon, August 12, 2016
‘Twas the grand opening of Wayside Memorial Park Mother Nature provided a picture perfect day for the Grand Opening of Wayside Memorial Park in Two Hills Alberta on July 16th, 2016. Wayside Memorial Park, a place of peace and reflection is situated on just under 2 acres of land and was formerly a provincial rest area. Located on highway 45, it’s only a short half-kilometer putt into Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community of the 2015-riding season, Two Hills Alberta! An enormous amount of work has gone into the park with trees having been planted, the old cook house converted into a chapel replete with a wrap around deck for hosting BBQ’s, meetings and memorials. There are two outhouses on the property, both of which have had a facelift. One has been made wheelchair accessible. All of the existing buildings have new roofs and fresh paint. A new storage shed holds enough tables and chairs for 100 people, over and above the seating available on the deck. A new gravel driveway wraps around the chapel, and it is anticipated that the driveway could be paved by next year when the Fallen Riders Monument is unveiled during the 10th Anniversary Run to the Hills Memorial Rally in 2017. Bob Ross and his cofounder Mark Kussmann were both on hand for this very special dedication, however Bob is the one who spoke about the park and it’s meaning with Mark preferring to stay behind the lenses of his
camera. Pastor Wes and his wife performed the dedication and then Town of Two Hills CAO Elsie Howanyk served as the emcee introducing the dignitaries who were on hand to commemorate the park and congratulate Bob for this impressive accomplishment. Acting Mayor, Sunny Rajoo made a very emotional and moving speech where he welcomed all of the riders and spoke of Bob’s determination and hard work and the support that the community, both its residents and businesses have offered to the accomplishment of opening the park. He thanked Bob Ross, Mark Kussmann and the volunteers that are involved with the Run to the Hills Memorial Rally, those who got in on the voting for Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community and those who have stepped up to embrace the riding community. As Sonny expressed it has been a win – win situation for all. The businesses benefit from the traffic, the community benefits from the beautification of a park that was once an eyesore, not to mention other supports the rally has paid for like toilets at the Ag Society grounds and a defibrillator for the arena. And lastly the riding community benefits because it has a welcoming community and a gorgeous park to remember our fallen. The Reeve of Two Hills County, Allen Sayler mirrored Acting Mayor Rajoo’s sentiments suggesting that the benefits of having more riders coming to Two Hills more frequently has benefited the entire county and region.
MLA Brian Hanson of the Wildrose Party said that he was proud to have been born in Two Hills and was glad to see that it has finally gotten recognition for its friendly and accepting ways. Conservative MP for the region, Shannon Stubbs is strongly tied to Two Hills with an office there, not to mention Shannon also lives in the Two Hills region. She too expressed her gratitude to Bob, Mark and the riding community for embracing the Town of Two Hills as the special place it is. The very attractive chapel and memorial park are ready and waiting for riders and their families alongside riding clubs to come out and use them. You can call Bob Ross at (780) 603-3008 or email him at runtothehillsrally@yahoo.ca to have the chapel opened for you or to discuss your needs for tables, chairs, camping etc. for a memorial you may wish to host. The Fallen Riders Monument that will be the focal point of the park will be unveiled during the Run to The Hills Memorial Rally, July 14th-16th, 2017. To see more photos of Wayside Memorial Park, the gorgeous little chapel and the dedication ceremony visit: https://plus.google. com/+BeltDriveBettyMC/posts/ LDJi7cypbKm If you are blessed enough to be riding today, please remember to ride like everyone around you is blind and cannot see you, and PLEASE consider dressing for the slide and not the ride... Belt Drive Betty, Editor & Rider
Above, a dedication service to the new facility. Second, acting Mayor Sonny Rajoo greets the crowd. Above Reeve Allen Sayler brings greetings from Two Hill County. BELT DRIVE BETTY PHOTOA
