Anderson Ranch Inc. named CCA’s 2016 TESA recipient
RON CARTIER PhOTO
The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) is pleased to announce Anderson Ranch Inc. of Fir Mountain, Saskatchewan as the 2016 recipient of The Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA). The ranch is operated by Miles Anderson and his wife Sheri, who received the award this evening in Calgary, Alberta in an awards ceremony during the inaugural Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC). The Andersons expressed sincere gratitude as they accepted the award during the conference banquet. CCA Environment Committee Chair Bob Lowe presented the Andersons with a belt buckle and local artwork in honour of the event. “The relationships that the Andersons have built between the conservation and agriculture communities to work together on Species at Risk habitat are truly unique. They have no misgivings reaching across the fence and accepting suggestions in order to truly do what’s best for the species that live on their ranch.” The Andersons manage a ranching operation that includes private holdings and large

provincial grazing leases south of Fir Mountain, Saskatchewan. The area features a wide range of ecosystems including rolling grasslands, rich riparian areas and sprawling sagebrush in the heart of the Great Plains. Most significantly, the ranch is home to many endangered and at-risk wildlife species that the Andersons work hard to protect. For example, Anderson has studied sage grouse nesting habits and adapted his grazing rotation to ensure dense vegetation necessary for nesting is kept intact during peak times of the year. He has also installed an innovate style of fencing to prevent endangered sage grouse from becoming injured in collisions. This innovation has also holds benefit for antelope and other species and has captured the attention of other sustainable ranchers and conservationists around the world. Anderson Ranch Inc.’s commitment to managing rangeland in a manner that not only benefits their cattle, but wildlife who find refuge in these fragile environments demonstrates the commitment to sustainability that the TESA embodies.

RETIRED, BUT NOT TIRED OF THE CATTLE INDUSTRY
Spotted at this year’s All Breed Purebred Cattle Show during the Dawson Creek Fall Fair were a couple of couples near and dear to the Peace Country cattle industry; Steve & Hazel Tofteland and Bob & Dorene Binks. Both are retired cattle producers, but remain strong and active supporters of the area’s cattle industry; as always, seen up front at cattle auctions and shows around the area. Hope to see you all for many years to come!
OOPS! DAN SLIPS UP
One of the things my advancing numbers of birthdays has granted me is the ability to admit when I have made an error; in this case, correctly identifying the owners and caretakers of the spectacular field of sunflowers just west of Spirit River. I mistakenly identified the field as belonging to Jerry Richard when, in fact, the field belongs to Earl & Lori Pack. My apologies to Lori, whose hard work and perseverance has brought many smiles to Highway 49 travellers this summer. R0011167089

Leaders wanted to represent Alberta’s Canola growers The Alberta Canola Producers Commission is seeking five canola growers to serve as directors on the board of directors for a 3-year term. This year, directors are needed in regions 1, 4, 7, 10 and 12. Alberta Canola is seeking a canola grower from region 12 to represent canola farmers on the Board as no nominations for this area were made last year. Alberta Canola divides Alberta into 12 regions, with each region electing a producer director to represent the canola growers within that region. Visit albertacanola. com/regions for a map and information on the regions. The Board of Directors meets quarterly and is guided in decision making by five committees comprised of board members.
Top, Averym and Brayla, above, rode in the Light Lead Line class at rodeo this year in Dawson Creek. RON CARTIER PhOTOs
• Government and Industry Affairs • Market Development. For full descriptions and committee roles please visit: albertacanola.com/committees Can I become an Alberta Canola Director? Do you grow canola in Alberta? Do you pay your levy? Then yes! Any producer who has paid a service charge on canola sold since August 1, 2014 is an eligible producer and can stand for election as a Director. An eligible producer can be an individual, corporation, partnership, or organization. Eligible producers must produce canola within the defined region in order to be
nominated, but do not have to reside within the region. What do I actually have to do as a Director? • Represent the canola farmers in your region, making informed decisions on issues based in research, finance, policy, extension, and market development • Travel to 4 board meetings per year. You will also have the opportunity to attend a diversity of valuable meetings, courses, conferences, and events. Nominations for the position of Director must be filed in writing at the Alberta Canola office, emailed to ward@albertacanola.com, or received by fax (780-4516933) on or before October 31, 2016.
The committees are: • Agronomic Research • Governance and Finance • G r o w e r Relations and Extension

You have to keep your backgrounders healthy If your fall marketing decision involves retaining weaned calves, keeping heifer replacements, or purchasing calves for feeding there are simple ways to ensure maximum feedlot health. Basically we need to think of these calves as walking immune systems that have to be nourished in order to fight off diseases which are common throughout the weaning and initial feeding period of the animal. First, calves are only as strong as the cow herd in which they
originated. Excellent cow vaccination programs, cow herd nutritional status, herd genetics and general husbandry are all very important factors which affect the immune status of the weaned calf you plan to feed successfully. Calves purchased from well vaccinated cow herds have been protected in gestation from diseases and receive colostrum rich in antibodies. The herd nutritional status also affects the quality of the colostrum and vigour of the newborn. Numerous studies have confirmed that calves
receiving too little colostrum at birth are far more prone to succumbing to feedlot disease. Once again we see how important nutrition is. Stress is another detrimental factor when dealing with post weaning sickness in calves. Studies have shown the most profound stress on these calves is mixing. The weaning process itself, transportation, feed changes, and new environment are all considerable stresses. However, removing a calf from its herd mates and mixing him with other calves has been proven to be the largest contributor to stress. Therefore, those of you whom are retaining your own ranch raised calves are already winning and if you are purchasing calves try to buy single source calves from a well fed, highly vaccinated herd. A good vaccination program for the calves is also very important. Ideally calves should receive two sets of vaccines prior to weaning. Processing these calves at branding and pre-weaning is probably the Cadillac program that can fit some operations. If a pre-weaning round-up and processing is not possible the second ‘booster’ can be put at weaning. However the stress factor comes into play again and these newly weaned calves may not respond as well to a vaccine during this very stressful time. Prevention programs and stress management will help decrease shipping fever, and antibiotic use in these calves. A good nutritional program is vital to allow these calves to consume enough energy during a low consumption period to maintain a healthy immune system. Our veterinarians will be more than happy to consult you with the appropriate program which fits your needs. Please give us a call and we will set up a herd health plan with you. Mike Ross DVM

Biting, kicking and ear pinning I’m amazed that to some people, horses pinning their ears at other horses, even when they are being ridden, is quite common and accepted. A horse that pins its ears at another horse or even at people is a horse that is threatening to do more like kick, bite or strike. As the owner of a horse that is threatening other horses or people, it should not be ok or acceptable in any way. Some people will say that the horse is just worried, nervous, uncomfortable or unconfident. So does that mean if we feel any of those things we can start biting and kicking other people if we are uncomfortable? Of course not. It is important to know the reason why a horse feels it needs to have those behaviors so we can help change them. But regardless of what the reason is, it is our job as an owner, rider or handler to put an end to it. That type of behavior says that the horse is the leader and they barely know that their handler exists. The horse’s mind is not with the person that is supposed to be in charge. It is our job to make sure our horse knows that it cannot threaten other people – ever, and never other horses when they are with us. They can kick high enough to break a person’s leg even in the saddle when they are trying to kick your horse. If our horse is threatening others when we are with them, we need to do something to change what it is thinking at that moment
when it is having the thought such as touching a rein, moving a hip or shoulder. Generally, the ear pinning horse will look towards the other horse. That is when you could pick up a rein and tip his nose back where it is supposed to be. Sometimes they stand there looking straight ahead with their ears pinned when a horse goes by. The sooner you can do something to get your horse’s mind on you and not the other horse the better. Catch it when it’s small and the correction can be smaller. Be consistent don’t allow ear pinning at other horses or people ever. You’re not trying to punish your horse, just change its mind about things and do enough so that it’s uncomfortable for it to have that thought. Get your horse used to being close to other horses. Ride the horse that has the issue up to the horse or horses that don’t have issues. Getting closer and closer stopping every step to allow them to see that they are fine, until you can stand stirrup to stirrup. Get the other rider to rub your horse and you can rub theirs. It seems to help solve the issue quicker. You can tie them near another horse and if anybody starts trouble give them a little flick with a rope or string to say mind your manners and don’t start fights with the other horses. If your horse kicks at other horses that ride up behind it, yield your horse’s hip with a purpose if it tries to kick. There will usually be other signs before it kicks like ear pinning; that’s when the rider
needs to pick up a rein or do something to interrupt the thought and let them know it’s not ok to even think about it. A horse that is acting that way is no fun, is taking over and is dangerous to other riders. The good news is that it is easy to fix with the right timing and some consistent corrections. THE BIG BEND The Bilawchuk Family History begins By Gail and Karen Bilawchuk In 1928 Matt Bilawchuk came to the Devale area from Manitoba looking for a homestead as he felt the farmland was better here. He went back to Manitoba for another year, then returned to Devale in 1929 with his wife Ann and their three children, George, Mary and Nick to settle on their homestead. The conditions they found were few roads, rough trails and plenty of bush country. In 1929 they made their home in a tent until they built their first house in 1930. In order to get to town they had to cross two creeks and such trips were made on foot. There really weren’t any pleasures then, but they never really had anything tragic or unusual happen to them. When Matt first came he helped some of the newcomers settle. Matt’s first wife Ann died in 1933. He later remarried the same year to Mark Kucharek of Volin, who had five children of her own: Steve, Walter, Jack, Ann and Nettie. Matt and Mary later had four children of their own: Sophie, Peter, Johnny, and Billy. In 1950 they started building a house on the quarter across the road from where they had been living, and moved into their new house in 1952. They lived there till the fall of 1958 then
moved into a house they had built in Spirit River, and their son Peter took over the farm. In July 1960 after living only two years in town Matt passed away. His wife Mary remained in town until her death in November of 1969. Of Matt’s three children George passed away in August of ’69, Mary lives in Grande Prairie, and Nick lives in Spirit River. Mary’s five children are Steve who lives in Spirit River, Walter in Prince George, B.C., and Ann, Jack, and Nettie in Dawson Creek, B.C. Of Matt and Mary’s four children Sophie lives in Ormand Beach, Florida, Peter on the home farm, Johnny in Spirit River, and Billy in Edmonton, Alta.

Collateral damage and decisions and bylaws that divide Here in Grande Prairie Alberta, where I live, we have a rough time as a motorcycle community. We have one particular police officer who seems to just hate everyone on a bike. He’s got an aggressive and disturbing way of approaching situations that seems to get people’s blood boiling. We live in a city with a bylaw wherein “gang clothing” is not allowed on city property. Add to that the liquor laws that mirror each other in most provinces regarding no “gang” clothing and you pretty much have a place where it is tough on riders to host anything without special attention and focus being put on us. This has been a historical situation in Grande Prairie going back as far as at least 1985, the first time I lived here. We have yet to have, that I am aware of, a period where the motorcycle community, the police and city could see eye to eye on much of anything.
See my blog post from 2009: (http://beltdrivebetty.blogspot. ca/2009/12/thanks-to-hells-angelsof-saskatoon.html) “All City facilities have signs posted by their entrances that say no criminal gang clothing or criminal gang colours is permitted inside.” Direct quote from the City of Grande Prairie web site. Now whether we like it, agree with it or understand it, or not, the fact is that the RCMP view 1% clubs as gangs. (We in the motorcycle community call them Motorcycle Clubs.) The RCMP view their colours and their “support gear” as “gang clothing”. The fine for allowing “gang cloth-
ing” in a licensed premises is steep and repeat offenders can loose their liquor license. The logic behind the liquor law is that rival gang members won’t be able to easily identify each other and that this law should reduce the risk to citizens regarding drunken brawls and fights that can get out of hand. The RCMP do not provide business owners with a list or a series of images of what is deemed to be “gang colours”. Back in April, a Grande Prairie Motorcycle Charity Group had a swap meet. It was held at Revolution Place which is a city owned event venue. All over the building it states no “Gang Clothing” Allowed. If a person of authority for the establishment (Revolution Place city staff in this case) calls the police regarding what they view as an infraction of the bylaw or the vendors contract, then the police have an obligation to attend. That weekend, all of the clubs, one percent or otherwise, who showed up to run booths etc did not wear their colours/cuts. BUT... The city staff that run Revolution Place, called the police because support gear for a 1% club was being sold. Sadly, the officer who responded is one who has problems with riders and that sentiment is wholeheartedly reciprocated by the riding community. There were some very nasty things that transpired and children witnessed these things. One gentleman had this cop attempt to confiscate merchandise that he purchased and another was told to take off his red & white Santa Claus tee shirt because it was red & white! The Wild West Motorcycle & Tattoo Fest and the Afghanistan
Monument Project Poker Run was slated for the June 24-26th weekend. I know I had begun the process for licenses etc on April 11th according to the date stamps on my first emails. The situation that transpired here in April was really distasteful. I expressed my opinion on what I witnessed, to the RCMP. (People really need to start wearing body cameras when dealing with this particular individual.) This RCMP officer should have conducted himself far differently than he did, he should have been less aggressive and less disturbing. He escalated things instead of calming them, from what I witnessed. (I assert again - People really need to start wearing body cameras when dealing with this particular individual.) After what transpired at Revolution Place on the April 23rd weekend, I know Peter, the show host of WWM&T Fest in June, looked into other venues, but could not find one that offered what was needed on that weekend. He already had bands and vendors booked. The ANAVETS Branch #389 had decided to work with Peter long before the April event that caused such a stir. The ANAVETS hosted the 50/50 draws for him, and ANAVETS turned over $10 for every poker card hand sold allowing the attendees to take part in the run and the show. In return Peter helped them with the sound equipment and a few tables and chairs for the poker run. Because we were all concerned about how this community was going to react - and please understand that I am not siding with Revolution Place - I would NEVER host an event there, I think their staff are rude and condescending. I am not siding with the cops. I am however stating
that I feel the host of the April event should have known that support gear is considered by the RCMP as a sign of gang support/affiliation and that someone would end up calling the cops. It was a risky chance to take that ended up costing a lot more than most would realize. The April event host told me that their organization was told one thing by the venue staff and then something very different transpired. Bureaucrats are bureaucrats. You can’t take their word for anything - you need to get everything they say in writing. It’s call Cover YOUR ASS. Peter advertised his event steady on the radio; we pushed on Facebook and through posters and visits to the cruise nights at the A & W and by attending the Alliance Church car show and talking to everyone there that we could. We had hoped that riders would still support these two events in spite of the venue and what had taken place previously. Well, that didn’t turn out to be the case. Through a number of text and private messages I learned that many riding clubs and individuals had decided to “boycott” Revolution Place. Perhaps that’s not the right term, but it’s about as appropriate a one as I can think of because the results were the same as if a boycott had been called for. Now the interesting thing is that these decisions were made randomly, individually, no meeting, no joint decision. Does that tell you anything about how strongly people felt about what they witnessed and experienced? In effect, these people all decided the same thing, over the same incident without conferring with each other. Screw the drama at Revolution
Place, we don’t need it, won’t take it. All of the vendors, some who travelled 7 and 8 hours to get here - well they took a beating...it was harsh. There were 31 people at the dance, so that didn’t even cover the hotel rooms for the band. I have lodged a complaint with the Community Growth director Koji Miyaji of the City regarding our experiences with Revolution Place’s staff. I also have a question for the City of Grande Prairie and that is about their divisive and I feel discriminatory bylaw: “Why are you bothering to court motorcycle events at your venue given the bylaw and the issues of what is legal and illegal in the eyes of the city staff and RCMP?” I look forward to a day when all motorcyclists are treated like Canadian Citizens and allowed to exercise their rights and freedoms under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. If you are blessed enough to be riding today, please remember to ride like everyone is blind and cannot see you. Belt Drive Betty, Editor & Rider

A hopper hunt with Matt Preprost!
Camelina chow -- A grasshopper feasts on the pods of a camelina plant in a B.C. Grain Producers Association research field just north of Fort St. John. Camelina is an oilseed crop native to the Europe and Asia that Agriculture and
Agri-Food Canada says “holds big potential” for the country’s agriculture sector. The department says camelina was first brought to Canada in 1863 and is considered a sister crop to canola. The seeds, however, require less water than canola,
matures early, and can grow in cool climates. The crop has the potential to be used as feedstock for bioplastic packaging, as a food product for humans, or feed for cattle, poultry, and swine.
