It’s Canada’s Agriculture Day February 16 was Canada’s Agriculture Day – a time to celebrate and draw a closer connection between Canadians, our food and the people who produce it. The announcement, made on June 1 on the final day of the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity Public Trust Summit in Ottawa, marks the first time the industry has dedicated a day to celebrating agriculture and the people in the industry. “We all eat food yet many people don’t automatically make the connection between what’s on their plate and the commitment and care that goes into raising livestock, growing crops or processing food,” said Crystal Mackay, CEO of Farm & Food Care Canada, a national charity committed to building public trust and confidence in food and farming in Canada. In the 1930s, more than 90 per cent of Canadians had a connection to agriculture. Today, it’s less than three per cent, according to Statistics Canada census information. “Every link in the food production chain – from the farm to the grocery store and restaurant – plays a vital role in bringing food to your table every day,” said Mackay, whose group organized the summit. “Canada’s Agriculture Day is an opportunity to get involved, celebrate and be a part of the conversation about food and farming.” Candace Hill, manager of Agriculture More Than Ever, said Canada’s Agriculture Day complements the industry-led initia-
tive that has attracted over 470 partner organizations and 2,100 individuals committed to creating positive perceptions of agriculture. Launched more than four years ago, Agriculture More Than Ever’s goal is to encourage those involved in agriculture to speak up and speak positively about the industry. “It’s all about showing our love, pride and passion for an industry that puts food on our tables,” Hill said. “We want to
give everyone the opportunity to have a voice in the conversation and celebrate the industry that feeds the world.” Hill encourages the industry, organizations and individuals to mark the date on calendars and come up with their own ideas and activities to promote and celebrate Canadian agriculture. Pet, Hobby or Livestock? Do you need a PID Number? You may call your animal a pet or a backyard hobby, but if it is also livestock you must have a Premises Identification Number (PID) from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. From backyard chickens and bees to horses, quail, yaks and pheasants, the owners of livestock and poultry across Alberta are being reminded that they are required to register for a mandatory PID Account and Number with the province. It’s free, simple to apply for and in an emergency – such as a fire, flood or disease outbreak -- your family of animals, birds and bees will be known to emergency responders. If you board your pet elsewhere – like a horse at a boarding stable – you need to know the PID Number for where it is located. The PID system is designed to help the owners of animals when disasters

strike and is an important part of animal health and safety for everyone. Traceability information includes PID and this up-to-date and accurate information is critical to emergency response. Owners of animals, birds and bees have benefited from the PID system in several natural disasters in the last couple of years. The size of your herd, flock or hives doesn’t matter, nor does the number of acres you have them on, all owners and their premises need to be registered. For more information on PID and Alberta’s Traceability system, call the Ag-Info Centre at 310-FARM (3276) or visit the Alberta Agriculture website www.agric.gov.ab.ca to register online or download the forms. Lighting the way in your very own greenhouse While light plays an important role in growing all crops, it is particularly important to greenhouse growers, says Dustin Morton, commercial horticulture specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “If you are a greenhouse grower, light can affect your crops in terms of flowering, fruiting, branching, and overall size. The challenge is that light is measured many different ways. The typical visible wavelength range of this light is between 390 to 700 nanometers. By contrast, photosynthetically active radiation, or PAR, is the light plants can use to photosynthesize. PAR is in the range of 400 to 700 nanometres. So, if your light levels are below 400 nanometres, your plants could literally be in the dark even though you still have enough light to see them.” For this reason, Morton encourages growers to avoid traditional measures of light like lux and foot-candles. “Those are not useful measures when working with light in a greenhouse. They aren’t adequate to measure a plant’s needs. Measures like moles and daily light integral are much more effective.” At its simplest form, a mole is just a way of converting and simplifying large numbers. “To illustrate, let’s say we make a massive bucket that is a metre by a metre (or 1 m2), to measure the light in our greenhouse. Assume that the photons of PAR (the light plants can see) are marbles. Every time your bucket fills, you have basically received one
Custom Crop Spraying
mole of light per metre square (mole·m-2). “If you were to do this for an entire day, and then add up the total amount, you would have moles per metre square per day (mole·m-2·day-1). Moles per metre square per day is referred to as Daily Light Integral (DLI), a measure used to calculate light levels in greenhouses that is growing in popularity.” Morton prefers DLI because it is a measure of light throughout the entire day as opposed to a snapshot in time. “Light levels fluctuate throughout the greenhouse from one moment to another. DLI is a cumulative value; as such, rather than just knowing how much light your crop got at one point during the day, you can assess how much light there has been throughout the whole day and whether additional lighting is required.” But how much light is enough? According to Morton, the amount of light required varies from crop to crop and, to some extent, species to spe-
cies. “The typical rule of thumb is an average of 10-12 mole·m-2·day-1. In Alberta, outdoor DLI can vary from under 5 to upwards of 45 depending on the time of year and location. As this is a measure of DLI outside, this will decrease substantially in a greenhouse given a number of variables such as spacing, glazing material, energy curtains, etc. In other words, in order to produce a quality crop during the winter months, supplemental lighting may be necessary to ensure your crop is filling its light needs.” Whether supplemental lighting is used or not, Morton says it’s important to think like a plant. “Buy yourself a light meter, track your DLI and respond to your plants needs accordingly. Staying on top of this measure will ensure a healthier, more robust crop. If you do start to look at supplemental lighting, as you will have a more accurate reading on your specific needs. Your crop and your business will reap the benefits.”

Equine gastric ulcers can be a real pain in the gut By Dr. Christa Harder Equine stomach ulcers are a relatively common condition found in many performance horses. Studies have shown that ulcers can occur in up to 37% of leisure horses, 63% of performance horses and 93% of racehorses. This common condition is caused by an erosion to lining of the horse’s stomach due to prolonged exposure to acid. The severity of the condition can be quite variable from mild inflammation of the lining to large areas of ulceration and bleeding. A horse’s stomach has evolved over time to continually produce stomach acid since in natural circumstances a horses is grazing small meals frequently throughout the day. When the horse’s stomach is empty for prolonged periods of time the stomach acid can begin to irritate the stomach lining since there is no feed there to neutralize the acid. Inflammation or ulceration to the stomach lining can cause poor appetite, weight loss or poor condition, poor performance, behavior changes/ acting out and mild or recurrent colic. There are also several risk factors in horses that can lead to an increased likelihood of developing ulcers. Diet - Since horses are continuously secreting stomach acid, long periods without food to neutralize that acid may cause ulceration. High grain diets may also contribute to ulcer risk by reducing the time spent feeding and increasing gastrin (acid) levels. Intense exercise - There is a significant corre-
Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic
lation between equine training and gastric ulceration. Training/exercise decreases blood flow to the stomach (which helps to remove acid) - while increased pressure in the abdomen during exercise which pushes acid up into the sensitive portion of the stomach. Physical stress and illness - Gastric ulcers can occur in response to stress. Shock, respiratory disease and trauma may play a role. Transportation and stable confinement are proven risk factors in causing ulcers. Psychological stress -While psychological stress is difficult to evaluate in horses, stressful conditions may adversely influence feed intake, resulting in periods of increased stomach acidity. Medication – certain long-term medications can produce detrimental gastric effects, as they may inhibit production of the substances that help to protect the stomach. Diagnosing gastric ulcers can be difficult and ideally are diagnosed by inserting a 3 meter endoscope (camera) down the esophagus into the stomach and visualizing ulcers or inflammation on the stomach lining. A 3 meter endoscope is not available at most primary care vet clinics therefore another test sometimes used is a fecal test to identify blood in the stool. Unfortunately this test cannot distinguish whether the blood is being specifically caused by ulcers or if it is a result of various other conditions. Therefore, results from this test need to be very carefully interpreted. In some cases where we have ruled out other conditions, horses are started on treatment for ulcers and their response to therapy is monitored.
Effective medication is also available from your vet, to help treat and reduce the risk of gastric ulcers. Gastroguard® is an oral paste given daily to treat ulcers in horses. The dosage can also be altered by your veterinarian to be used as a preventative treatment as well. Gastroguard is made up of omeprazole that is specifically formulated to inhibit the acid producing cells from producing too much acid leading to gastric ulceration without affecting digestion. Active stomach ulcers are treated with Gastroguard ® for 28 days then re-assessed. Another product we use is called Pronutrin® which is a natural product fed daily that improves the natural protective barrier of the stomach lining helping to prevent ulcers. There are many other products on the market to combat gastric ulcers but we encourage you critically review their efficacy or discuss them with us before administering. Prevention is key to developing and also minimizing the severity of gastric ulcers. Preventative measures include: allowing free-choice access to grass or hay, increasing feeding frequency or feeding with slow feed hay nets, limit high grain ration, allowing visual access to other horses when stabled (decrease psychological stress) and addressing other causes of stress and pain such as lameness or dental abnormalities. Preventative treatment with ulcer medications before a known period of stress such as performance or transport will also help minimize the effects of ulcers. If you suspect your horse may be struggling with stomach ulcers please contact us at the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic.

New publication on wind and solar leases The Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO) has released a new publication titled Negotiating Renewable Energy Leases. “The FAO has been seeing an increase in the number of calls about negotiating wind and solar leases,” says Jeana Schuurman, rural engagement and communications specialist with the FAO. “In response, we’ve put together this new booklet to help landowners who are negotiating for a devel-
oper to lease land for the construction and operation of a solar or wind farm.” Schuurman says the FAO wants Albertans to understand that a wind and solar lease is different than one for oil and gas. “Our publication explores some of the key differences. It’s important to understand that negotiating for a wind and solar lease is 100 per cent voluntary. There is no legislated compensation structure, and developers will
offer different compensation structures. Landowners also need to be aware that the end-of-life considerations for wind and solar are also different than what we see in oil and gas.” Hard copies of the publication are available through Agriculture and Forestry Publications at 310-FARM (3276). As well, a digital version can be downloaded from the FAO website.
Moisture situation update “So far, the dry winter of 20162017 stands in stark contrast to the cool and wet conditions experienced this fall across most of the province,” says Ralph Wright, manager, agro-meteorological applications and modelling unit, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Again, this should serve as a strong reminder that Alberta’s weather patterns are highly unpredictable and that abrupt transitions from periods of wet
to dry and dry to wet aren’t uncommon.” As of January 31st, snow pack accumulations were generally below normal throughout most of the agricultural areas, with the exception of much of southern Alberta, where very light to no accumulations of snow are normal for this time of year. Well-below normal snowpacks are prevalent throughout much of east central Alberta, and most areas
north of the Yellowhead highway, including much of the Peace Region. “Most of these areas see snowpack this low on average less than once in 12 to 25 years, with many locals within this area seeing snowpack this low, on average less than once in 25 to 50 years,” says Wright.

SPCA receives $5 million to improve BC facilities The B.C. government recognizes and values the important work of the BC SPCA and its contributions to the welfare of animals. Today’s funding builds on the $5 million announced in Balanced Budget 2015 to support the first phase of their facilities plan, and supports the Province’s commitment to working with the BC SPCA to address animal-welfare issues throughout the province. Phase 1 funding supported a large animal-seizure facility which opened in Kelowna in March 2015, and last June, 2016, a new state-of-the-art SPCA facility opened its doors in Nanaimo. Recently, plans were unveiled for a new community animal centre in Kamloops to help address the overwhelming pet population in the area. Craig Daniell, chief executive officer, BC SPCA said they are extremely grateful to the Government of British Columbia for their ongoing support of homeless, abused and vulnerable animals. “This $5-million contribution provides a valuable launch as we move forward with community fundraising for second phase of our capital building plan, which will include a new community animal centre in Vancouver. “

The B.C. government announced an additional $5 million to support the BC SPCA’s eight-year Facilities Development and Service Plan to replace or renovate aging shelters, keeping vulnerable animals safe. North Vancouver-Seymour MLA Jane Thornthwaite joined with members of the BC SPCA for the announcement. This $5-million funding announcement will allow the BC SPCA to embark on the initial stages of Phase 2 of its facilities plan, which includes a new Vancouver campus. “Animals everywhere deserve proper care and housing. With this additional $5 million from the provincial government, we will see more animals under the care of the BC SPCA receiving the treatment they need to be healthy and protected,” she said. Plans for the new Vancouver site are still in the early-planning stages, but the facility will include a Community Animal Centre, full-service veterinary hospital, education centre, and serve as the BC SPCA’s provincial office. This will increase their capacity to serve as the Lower Mainland’s primary hub for surrendered animals, and support rescued animals that are looking for their forever homes.

Farm accounting continues to evolve, or grow if you will What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in farm accounting software and the use of that software? Software programs like AgExpert Analyst have improved exponentially over the years. Functions such as GST and HST reporting are integrated. Inventory tracking is an essential feature. The program can handle payroll processing, and it’s much easier to drill down to cost of production. It’s also great to see producers who are fully invested in the program and excited by new features. These are often features that have been suggested by customers themselves. For the younger generation of users, computer use isn’t a barrier like it was with some of the users who converted from manual accounting. That’s gratifying for trainers like me. The new trend is mobile apps so that data can be entered on the go. This reduces the chance of lost or misplaced receipts and keeps everything up-to-date. Are there any patterns as to how the farm accounting task is handled within family farms? Keeping the books up-to-date is still a struggle on many farms. The farm office is usually in the home and people have many other tasks and numerous distractions, especially during busy times of the year. But there’s an increasing recognition of the importance of up-to-date financial records. They’re critical to farm management. It isn’t just to keep track of how much tax you have to pay. Organized records assist in prompt bill payment and accurate recording of all your business activities. That can assist in obtaining financing, minimize your accounting fees and make budgeting and cash flow planning much more accurate. Having one person focused on the farm ac-
counting function is usually helpful. One person responsible for making entries typically means better continuity. Dedicated office space within the home is important. It’s interesting to see how the job is transferred from one generation to the next. Sometimes this is a grudging transfer with tension and apprehension. Other times, the older generation is pleased to be passing along this critical aspect of the farm business. Do many farms outsource their bookkeeping? Yes, this happens on some farms and I do that for a number of clients. Some farms don’t have anyone with the time or interest in accounting. Plus, farms have become larger and more complicated. If the job is outsourced, at least it’s done and the work doesn’t pile up. However, the bookkeeper still needs the paper records to work from. There still needs to be a good flow of information. The days of shoebox accounting are all but over. Many accountants require records in a software program. I encourage producers to do their own bookkeeping if possible. You can start with the basics and become more advanced as you grow with the functions of the accounting program. With AgExpert Analyst, training classes are offered throughout the year and one-on-one help is readily available. If you don’t understand some of the basics of accounting, it’s more difficult to make sense of your financial statements. However, doing your own record- keeping puts you in the driver’s seat. Farms with good records and good analysis of their records have reduced stress and are better able to react to whatever happens with the markets and the weather. There are many factors in farming over which you have little or no control,
but with good accounting you can at least be prepared. What advice do you have regarding the selection of professional accountants? With the farm bookkeeping function, analysis sometimes takes a backseat to data entry and the ongoing aspects of running a business. Payroll needs to be maintained, income tax instalments must be current and taxes must be filed on time. But there are many ways to use the records for analysis of a farm’s financial strengths and weaknesses. A good accountant can be key in that regard. There’s a wide variation in what accountants charge and the services they actually provide. It’s important to have a strong working relationship and if you’re not getting valuable and timely advice, it may be time to move your business to another firm. Of course, you’ll need to do your homework and see what different firms provide and how their fees compare, but it’s important to have a good relationship with an accountant who can provide good service and valuable advice. Karen D. Wright, is a software expert + farmer.

MacAulay announces Lonny McKague to CGC Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced today the appointment of Lonny McKague as Commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC). The appointment is for a fouryear term effective February 13, 2017. Biographical notes are attached. This appointment is part of the rigorous new approach to Governor in Council appointments— an approach that uses open, transparent and merit-based selection processes that strive for gender parity and reflect Canada’s diversity to support Ministers in making appointment recommendations for positions within their portfolio. Employing approximately 400 full time employees, the CGC is the regulator of Canada’s grain handling industry and the official certifier of Canadian grain. The CGC is responsible for establishing and maintaining Canada’s grain grading system, and is also one of Canada’s scientific research organizations on grain quality. “I am pleased to announce the appointment of Lonny McKague to the Canadian Grain Commission. The CGC is responsible for maintaining a competitive and efficient grain sector and I know Mr. McKague will bring his knowledge and experience to ensure the Commission is properly equipped to carry out this important role,” said MacAulay.
McKague has extensive experience as an owner and operator of a farm in South Central Saskatchewan. His forty years of experience as a primary producer have provided him with knowledge of current social and economic issues facing producers and their businesses. He has successfully navigated a farming operation through all of the production, handling, transportation and marketing challenges that have occurred in the ever-changing global market.
McKague served as a Director and a Founding Member of Ogema Elevator Ltd, a provider of grain elevator products and services in Ogema, Saskatchewan. He is a former president of the Canadian Limousin Association, the Ogema Agricultural Society, and of the local Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association. He also served as a past director of the Ogema Credit Union. He has studied Vocational Agriculture and Agriculture Business Management at the University of Saskatchewan.

JNI 39D BW: 110 Adj WW: 821 A bull that packs a little extra punch. Out of a great cow family that will also produce steers that push down on the scale.
NVG 26D BW: 80 Adj WW: 723 A very correct and sound calving ease bull with above average growth

Top economic drivers of 2017: global economy What can Canadian ag expect from the global economy in 2017? Big news in 2017 will be the evolution of China and the U.S. as dance partners. That this dance will change tempo is certain; what the tempo will be is unclear. Given the size of the two economies and their presence in ag trade, any change should impact commodity prices. China imported 63% of world soy trade in 2015; 36% of that came from the U.S. A slowdown of U.S.-China trade relations could have a range of different impacts, one of
which is that it could open the Chinese market for other suppliers to fill. For example, a sudden and large cut in U.S. imports of Chinese goods however could also produce a slowdown in overall Chinese growth, curtailing one of the world’s largest ag markets. Despite the overtones of slowing global trade in 2016, global demand for agriculture commodities and agri-food products should continue to stay strong. The likely impacts to Canadian agriculture from the evolving global economy we can expect will
come primarily from the U.S. and the course for global trade the new U.S. administration charts through its first year in office. A cut in trade from the U.S. will have ripple effects throughout world markets and certainly here in Canada. If economic logic prevails, our trade relationship with the U.S. will not change much, given the integration and interdependencies of the two economies. Key areas to monitor include: Canadian cattle and hog exports to the U.S. totalled CA$2.2 billion and 99.7% of all exports in 2015. Both countries’ supply chains are highly integrated and benefit from smooth trading rules.
Currently, about 40% of the U.S. corn supply goes to ethanol markets; any change in the U.S. ethanol policy would disrupt the balance of supply and demand and impact corn prices and other commodity markets. Our expectation? If the policy is changed, it wouldn’t be immediate, and would need to be legislated – not an easy feat. What’s the bottom line? Generally, any change in trade policies that will strengthen the USD will keep the CAD lower. That will be good for Canadian exports and good for prices Canadian producers receive for commodities priced in USD.

Genesis talks the invisible touch for farmers Genesis Grains & Fertilizer, LP (Genesis) a Western Canadian farmer owned agribusiness confirmed the first of seven anticipated fertilizer SuperCenters. Through the united efforts of promoters, Farmers of North America (FNA) and AgraCity Crop & Nutrition (AgraCity), Belle Plaine, Saskatchewan, Canada has the honour of becoming the first location of this historic $24 million project and has paved the way for the organization to secure the final debt financing for the project. “Farmers have been deserving of this unique business structure for countless generations,” noted FNA President, James Mann. “In a matter
of 12 months once construction is complete, just over 600 farmers from over 200 Western Canada communities with the vision and confidence to join FNA and AgraCity on this journey, will be the first to directly share in the responsibility and rewards of owning part of a major fertilizer supply and distribution system. A piece of the supply chain they can call their own.” Andre Berube from Falher, Alberta was not only proud to hear of the announcement, he shared the vision and optimism for what Genesis and its operations would mean for future generations of farm families. “Being an investor in any project is always an
Ashford 30
exciting opportunity, but to be able to help select a reputable firm to create what I believe will be a coveted operation globally, was both an honour, and will serve as a memory for my lifetime. A story I cannot wait to share with my grandchildren, and may I be so fortunate, my great grandchildren. That’s why I invested to begin with, I wanted to ensure the future was bright for the generations to come.” Building a world-class operation requires significant expertise and attention to detail. Genesis will partner with Stueve Canada Ltd. to serve as its lead in the contracting oversight of this significant investment into the future of farming in Western Canada. The Genesis team invited a handful of investors to tour fertilizer blending facilities in the USA to get their opinion on specific attributes of the facilities. Mike Haydon from Swift Current, Saskatchewan had this to
say, “I learned that these are state of the art facilities and there are a lot of complexities in getting the project to this stage. This is a first-class innovative project that will definitely be an asset to the farmers involved”. The Genesis value proposition is founded on its ability to accrue retail margins for invested farm business owners. Future development intends to complement this reward with the distribution of nitrogen fertilizer manufactured by the proposed ProjectN plant once it comes on line. For more information, to receive an in-person investor education session, and ultimately become a part of the “Genesis Experience”, farmers should contact the FNA and/or AgraCity office in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan at 1-(877)-362-3276. Additional information is also available at www.genesisgrainandfertilizer. com.

Nation seeding more canola, less grain in 2017: Ag Canada Canadian farmers are expected to seed more canola but less wheat and barley in 2017 compared to the previous year, according to the first supplydemand estimates from Agriculture Canada for 2017-18 (Aug-Jul). Total area seeded to all crops is expected to rise slightly, due to a decrease in summerfallow, ac-
cording to Agriculture Canada’s Market Analysis Group. However, a return to average yields would see production of all crops decline slightly. Total wheat production in 2017-18 is forecast at 29.1 million tonnes, down from 31.7 million tonnes the previous year. Of the total, durum is expected to drop the

most, with the projected 5.8 million tonnes well below the 7.7 million grown in 2016-17. The early estimate for Canadian barley production in 2017-18, at eight million tonnes, down from 8.8 million the previous year. Canola seedings are forecast to increase to 8.5 million hectares, from 8.2 million in 2016-17. Canola production is forecast at 18.5 million tonnes, up slightly from the 18.4 million grown the previous year. For the pulse and special crops, Ag Canada expects slight decreases in both pea and lentil seedings, although a return to average yields would still see lentil production rise on the year. Total ending stocks for the major grains and oilseeds are expected to total 11.835 million tonnes by the end of the 2017-18 crop year, down considerably from the 13.605 million projected for 2016-17. The eight major grains and oilseeds include: canola, flaxseed, soybeans, wheat, oats, barley, corn and rye. Carryout for the major pulse and special crops is forecast at 2.360 million tonnes for 2017-18, up considerably from the 1.630 million forecast for 2016-17. The seven major specialty and pulse crops are dry peas, lentils, dry beans, chick peas, mustard rn seed, canary seed and sunflower seeds. the

Green certificate program lets students gain agricultural, on-farm experience Agriculture is all about cultivating, nurturing and producing, so it’s no coincidence that a unique and highly successful high school training program in Alberta is using those exact words to describe its vision. “The Green Certificate Program cultivates partnerships, and allows us to nurture Alberta’s youth to produce the province’s agricultural future,” says Raelene Mercer, provincial co-ordinator for the Green Certificate Program. “Our goal is to help support workforce development in the primary production sector of agriculture by creating skilled workers.” The Green Certificate Program is industry driven, and in collaboration with the province’s agriculture and education ministries, it develops a career pathway for young people to pursue agriculture. That can mean helping an individual go back to the farm and get involved in primary production, or it can mean helping them work in agriculture, either via entry-level positions on farms or in agri-business or by pursuing post-secondary education in an agricultural field. More options to help more sectors The Green Certificate Program offers Alberta high school students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 the opportunity to earn up to 16 of their Grade 12 diploma credits through training in some aspect of agricultural production, such as in cow-calf, dairy, feedlot, field crop, irrigated crop, sheep or swine production. Most students participating in the Green Certificate Program still come from a farming back-
ground or are connected to agriculture in some way. In these cases, the students (the program calls them “trainees”) have a primary trainer, who is usually a farming parent or family member, who is responsible for making sure the trainee gets through their activities and works progressively on skill development. In the case of Meagan Schwenk-Gattey, who took the cow-calf and feedlot modules of the Green Certificate Program, her primary trainer was her father. Meagan began the program in Grade 11, and recalls that it was the hands-on aspect which appealed to her the most. “I am more of a hands-on learner, and I get tired of sitting in a classroom all day, so the program offered me the chance to work with my trainer dad and be physically able to go and do the jobs,” Meagan says. “It was something I was already involved and interested in, and it was great that I could get school credits for spending the time on our family farm.” Increasingly, however, the program is branching out, and organizers says this is why interest in the program is growing, with two of the most recent additions being beekeeping and equine. “We bring on additional specializations about every three years, and that has brought more interest into the program from different corners of our market,” says Mercer. “A good example is equine. When we brought equine on in 2009, our numbers basically doubled in three years.” Those new programs are also creating interest among city students. Until then, the program had been adopted mainly by rural schools in farming
communities. “Now,” says Mercer, “one of our largest enrolment areas is the Calgary Board of Education, which then opens doors for agriculture to be introduced to a new group of students.” Mercer says that although there has been very little promotion or advertising about the Green Certificate Program, interest continues to grow and the program is expanding every year. “As we develop more and as we get more clients because we have new offerings, this brings us into another new school… there is just a grassroots marketing,” says Mercer. “Once we’re in that school and that door opens, then it’s opening it up for other students at that school too, whether or not they have a farming background.”

New insect species detected in western canola By Neil Billinger
Scientists say a canola pest they previously identified is actually a new species. For the past few years, the insect, believed to be the swede midge, was found in canola crops in parts of northeast Saskatchewan and east central Alberta. Experts thought the swede midge, commonly found in Ontario, was migrating west to the Prairies. But Boyd Mori, a biologist and chemical ecologist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Saskatoon, was puzzled by the high number of midge in emergence traps and the extremely low capture rate in pheromone-baited traps. “I know from my previous work that pheromones are very, very species specific,” Mori says. “I was surprised that we weren’t catching any (swede) midge in these pheromone traps.” Mori sent samples to two swede midge researchers, Rebecca Hallet and James Heal at the University of Guelph. The new, yet-to-be-named midge and the swede midge are very similar with a few significant
differences. The western insect is more robust, has hairier wings with slight differences in the antennae and genitalia. The findings were later confirmed by Bradley Sinclair with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. He concludes the prairie midge is a separate species from the swede midge. Midge damage observed in Saskatchewan appears to be low, but there are many unanswered questions that will require further research. “The only damage we can confirm that this new species causes are bottle-shaped galled flowers,” Mori says. “Whereas
Blue Works! HELIODOR 9
we know swede midge can affect most of the growing points on the plant from a really early stage.” Potentially, he says, swede midge could cause more damage than this new species, but researchers will still need to investigate the new species further because they don’t know if it also attacks the plant at an earlier stage. Scientists also want to learn more about the new midge species general life cycle, is it native, is it invasive and can it have multiple generations per year?

It’s poultryponics land in the north By Treena Hein

Work has begun on a ground-breaking project in Hay River, N.W.T. combining egg production with greenhouse vegetable production. It’s set to be fully operational in May. The initiative is spearheaded by AgriArctic of Whitehorse and Polar Egg of Hay River, with input from Lethbridge College staff. The idea of combining vegetable and egg production appears to be the first venture of its kind in the world. The circular concept will have some waste plant material fed to laying hens, and chicken manure treated with a bioreactor to producer fertilizer for the plants. The physical setup is also circular. About 200 hens will be housed in a hexagonal base structure with vertical hydroponics towers situated above in a frameless structure called an intershelter dome. High pressure sodium lamps will be used for light, and heat will be provided with a standard 1,500watt space heater. The bioreactor will also produce some heat, as will the hens. “The hens will have the same amount of space as they would in any other free-range housing setup, with access to the outside in the summer,” says Kevin Wallington, head of marketing and sales for Polar Egg Head. He says the eggs will be graded at the Polar Egg grading station with the rest of the company’s production, but they may be marketed separately. “There is the possibility to market them separately however, as we are looking to modify one of our barns to free-range production with an outdoor enclosure, and then we hope the combined number of free-range eggs would make that feasible.”

A world-class facility at the Tom Baker Cancer affects us all. We are fortunate in Alberta to have access to a world class facility for cancer treatment at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary. Many patients and their families have spent days, weeks, months or more in this facility dealing with life changing illnesses. This can cause a financial burden on patients and their families for such things as travel, lodging, food and parking etc. patients should be focused on healing rather than finances. Last year, the Patient Financial Assistance Program (PFAP) was accessed more than 3,863 times by over 835 families across Alberta, thanks to the support of folks like you. Based on Alberta’s current economic climate, requests for PFAP have increased by 43 per cent from 2015/16 and we expect the demand will continue to grow. We would like to invite you, your neighbour, family and co-workers...to the Unit 57 Benefit Concert and Ride on June 24th, 2017. All bikes welcome. We will meet at the McMahon Stadium in Calgary and ride Hwy 40 through the beautiful foothills of Alberta and end at the Twin Cities Hotel, Longview to enjoy some excellent local bands, a pig roast and a silent auction. Space is limited; you can buy your tickets in advance for $25 at www.twincitieshotel.ca. Tickets include admission to the concert and food; beverages are available for purchase. This is a request for a donation for our event; your donation will benefit the families who need it the most. All businesses that provide a donation will be recognized throughout the event. All funds raised at this event will be donated directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, and will support the Bone Marrow Transplant PFAP. Promotions will be on local radio/news stations, social media, and commemorative T-shirts will be available for purchase.

There must be some kind of misunderstanding spect it requires. Catching a horse, leading it around, brushing it, going for a walk around the property does not require much respect, even though they may willingly do all of these things. It really doesn’t require any effort from them. It’s more effort for the human, especially the catching and brushing them part. Heck, I could get caught easily too if I got my hair brushed once I was caught and maybe given a human crunchy while I had my hair combed (if I had hair that is). They could possibly like us but not respect us. So they come to see you but won’t do much. Another possible misinterpretation: if a horse pins its ears at anytime when a person is with that horse, does that mean that there is a respect, confidence or understanding issue? I believe it takes more than pinned ears to be able to guess at what a horse is thinking or feeling. Some would say if they pin their ears it is a bad sign of some sort. Years ago, I might have said that as well. When I watch all of the different times you might see a horse pin its ears, the reasons are vast and varied. You can go on the Internet and watch cutting bred horses turned loose with a steer and the horse can pin its ears and start cutting the steer. It might jump, buck, kick, come back and cut the steer again without any humans involved. Another time you can see a horse pin its ears is when he chases a dog in the pasture. Maybe a foal will pin its ears at another horse or at a human walking by. You can also watch a herd of horses running back and forth across a pasture bucking, kicking, ears pinned at their very best friend in the herd. Two horses that live together year round in the wild and will lie down beside each other for a nap. Then one gets up bugs the other one until it gets up. I’ve watched this happen at about the same time everyday. Then the fun begins as they basically shadow box, neither horse really making contact but they spar with each other with ears pinned going through the motions until they’ve had enough. Then they wander off together eating grass. In each of these examples I believe the horse might be thinking something different. Everything we think we know might not be as it seems. I’m glad after working with thousands of horses that I still can’t be 100 percent positive when I’m trying to read and understand what a horse might be thinking. There is no way possible to read all

I was chatting with a student the other day and she mentioned that her horse pinned its ears and kind of pressed up against the wall when she asked it to move into a canter. The horse she rides is an 11 year-old gelding, who is quiet and has been rode lots. She asked if I thought it was an understanding problem or a respect problem. I said probably a respect problem with a bit of understanding mixed in. She then said when she gets off him and walks across the arena to get something he follows along without even holding a lead line. I actually didn’t know why she even told me about the horse following her. A bit more discussion revealed that she thought that if the horse followed her without being lead then he must be respectful. I got thinking back how many times people told me what seemed to me to be completely unrelated stories about their horses right after I said they might have a respect problem. The student might say “yeah but,” I can catch him easily, or he stands great to be brushed, or he always comes to see me when I’m in the yard, or I can lead him anywhere, or I can ride him all over my property. I didn’t know why they would all of a sudden tell me these things. None of these things equal respect or, at least, much respect. I explained it like this. If you knew someone that liked ice cream and you asked if they’d like to go for ice cream, I’m sure the answer would be yes. They would probably even hurry if you said you were leaving right away. If they came with you, it isn’t because of the respect they have for you; it’s because of the ice cream. They may like you, or like what you’re taking them to do, but it’s not necessarily respect. You are taking them to do what they want to do. If you said to the same person, “Hey, can you come help me pick roots or rocks out of the field today?” and they said “yes” and if you said, “We are leaving right away,” they hurried not to hold up the show, that would be respect. Picking roots or rocks out of a field is not fun but it won’t hurt you either. Actually it does you a lot of good but if you could choose between ice cream and picking rocks, you’d pick ice cream even though the rocks are better for you. If you ask your horse to walk or canter and they do it willingly without a grumpy look on their face then, at least for that request, you have some respect. The more you ask of a horse, the more re-

BSE surveillance numbers were up in 2016 When it comes to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) surveillance, Canada’s beef producers stepped up to the plate in 2016, submitting 27,346 samples, all of which tested negative. Although this annual total once again fell short of Canada’s target number of 30,000 annual samples (a target established in 2003), it surpassed 2015’s total of 26,285 samples (netting one positive result, BSE case #19) and nearly touched 2014’s total of 27,531 samples. CCA General Manager Rob McNabb said this is a welcome result given Canada’s shrinking herd and other challenges to meeting the annual target. “Maintaining a credible level of BSE surveillance to demonstrate that Canada’s control measures are effective and are working towards eradicating the disease is important,” he said. Other contributing factors to meeting this target include the challenge of identifying qualifying samples in a timely manner for testing, a much
younger herd now than in 2003, and higher market values for cull cows. However, as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation into the February 2015 case #19 of BSE confirmed to the world, Canada has robust controls and surveillance programs in place to prevent the spread of the disease and detect the small and declining number of cases that are expected to occur from time to time. The CCA remains confident that despite the shortfall, the overall level of surveillance and the control measures in place will allow Canada to maintain its current controlled risk status and when appropriate, seek a change in risk status from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). With this and other surveillance programs contributing to the proven eradication of BSE in Canada and globally, at the 2015 CCA semi-annual meeting, the Foreign Trade Committee passed a resolution that the CCA work with the federal gov-

ernment to seek a revision to the OIE BSE code criteria for negligible risk that reduces the time period that must pass following a BSE case from the current 11 years. Meantime, producers are encouraged to continue to do their part and submit at least one cow per year for sampling. Cattle between 30 months and 10 years of age provide the most valuable information in terms of monitoring the cattle population for BSE. However, any animal older than 30 months of age that fits into one of the categories of dead, down, dying or diseased is a potential candidate for testing. The National BSE Surveillance Program provides reimbursement for eligible samples to the producer for assisting in disposal costs and/or to a private veterinarian, if involved.
Flaxseed supply, demand and pricing prospects Flax output declined notably in Canada in 2016, falling to an estimated 579,000 tonnes, well down from 942,300 tonnes the year before and the lowest output since 488,900 tonnes produced in 2012. The PFCanada supply/demand balance sheet below was developed with a 2016 production estimate of 605,000 tonnes, but adjusted based on yield, subject to later revision. And while it may be a smaller producer compared to Canada, a decline in U.S. flax production in 2016 has also helped support prices on this side of the border A merican flax output this past year amounted to 220,480 tonnes, down 14 per cent from a year earlier as a drop in harvested area more than offset an increase in the average yield. Harvested area totaled 367,000 acres in 2016, down 20 per cent from the previous year, while the average yield came in at 23.7 bushel per acre, up 1.6 bushels from 2015 and the highest on record. The U.S. is a buyer of Canadian flax, and a smaller crop south of the border could mean additional such purchases later on in the 2016-17 marketing year. However, currency issues are also likely to remain a market factor, with any strength/weakness in the Canadian dollar impacting how much business American buyers ultimately do. We have seen Prairie cash bids rise through the fall harvest season to as high as $13.25 per bushel delivered on No. 1 quality, and since then, stabilize. It’s possible this spring may bring about some incremental demand and price support associated with additional European buying to offset reduced imports of former Soviet Union flax, that is, given tightened residue tolerance specifications on the herbicide haloxyfop. What kind of price premium can be expected? Well, that is anyone’s guess at this time, if there is to be any additional premium at all. With the start of 2017, we have yet to see additional premiums develop in Europe. As a precaution, I believe it to be prudent to view Prairie cash prices at $13 a bushel as an incremental selling opportunity, especially since we are also now seeing a hardening of resistance amongst Chinese importers to pay more than this price level equivalent. Cattle outlook appears bearish By Richard Kamchen It was a nice run while it lasted, but a recent bearish government report pressured the United States cattle futures lower. Larger than expected placements in the United States Department of Agriculture’s December Cattle on Feed report sent the Commodity Market Exchange live and feeder cattle futures to their lowest levels since Jan. 9 earlier this week. The USDA cattle inventories released earlier this week showed a two per cent increase in cattle inventories and support the bearish trend. Prior to the declines, Alberta producer Bob Lowe felt pleased about the more positive movement in markets since October. “There is some money being made and it has given us the opportunity to do some forward contracting,” Lowe says, adding with foresight, “Hopefully it holds on, but we are on the downside of the cycle.” Still, Alberta feeder cattle prices have improved since last fall, points out provincial livestock analyst Jason Wood. He explains prices are up 23 per cent for 500- to 600-pound steer calves, 12 per cent for 800- to 900-pound yearling steers, and 23 per cent for slaughter steers. “Tightening supplies of slaughter ready cattle, strength in the beef cutout value, and good packer margins

in quarter four of 2016 were price supportive,” Wood says. “Retail beef prices are also starting to decrease, positive for consumers and demand.” But he adds packer margins have pulled back and cutout values are seeing resistance. Also, this is seasonally a slower period for beef demand, and there’s an impending increase in slaughter cattle supplies. In the short-term, Wood expects prices to range from steady to softer. Going into late winter/early spring, prices will move lower on increased slaughter cattle supplies before seasonally increasing in the fall, he says. FarmSense Marketing’s Herb Lock says in the big picture, the industry is facing increasing supplies of beef, particularly in the U.S. There, herds have been growing in the last two years and are likely to grow for another one, possibly two more years. Beef demand is now being impacted by the new trend of all-day breakfasts at restaurants, which is much more positive for pork, Lock says. Beef is also facing more competition from large international supplies of pork and chicken. Beef demand, however, is shifting toward people consuming less, but demanding higher quality and more expensive beef, Lock says.
