Help shape farm and ranch labour legislation Albertans are being encouraged to provide input on how provincial labour laws could apply to farms and ranches. In May 2016, six technical working groups began developing recommendations on how employment standards, labour relations, and occupational health and safety requirements could be applied to meet the unique needs of the agriculture industry. The technical working groups that were reviewing employment standards and labour relations have completed their work. Their recommendations are now posted online and Albertans will have until April 3 to provide feedback to government. “I thank the members of the technical working groups for their hard work and dedication to this important process. The recommendations are an excellent starting point to ensure waged nonfamily farm workers have the same rights as other workers, while preserving the way of life that is the foundation of rural Alberta.” Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and For-

estry “I’m pleased to share the first set of recommendations we received from the working groups. We promised we would seek feedback as we go through this process and I encourage Albertans to look at the recommendations and provide their honest and frank response. Your views are very important to us as we work together to get this right.” Christina Gray, Minister of Labour Both working groups were chaired by an independent and impartial individual with mediation, consensus and board governance experience. The groups included members from the agricultural sector, labour groups and technical experts. “At the outset, Technical Working Group 1 unanimously committed to providing safe, fair and healthy workplaces reflecting the realities of Alberta’s farm and ranch operations. We agreed to a dialogue rather than a debate, seeking to understand and share perspectives. Based on this shared understanding, the group was able to create recommendations for future regulations that best meet the unique interests and needs of Alberta’s farm and ranch community.”

David Gould, Chair of Employment Standards Technical Working Group “Over the course of five days, a group of people with diverse interests came together to consider how the Labour Relations Code would apply to agricultural workers and employers. Those individuals committed to dialogue rather than debate and to listening to each other’s viewpoints with an open mind. As Chair, I commend the hard work of all our participants.” Cheryl Yingst Bartel, Chair of Labour Relations Technical Working Group Next steps Government will begin drafting legislative amendments based on the recommendations and public feedback received. Recommendations from the four technical working groups reviewing Occupational Health and Safety are expected in the near future. The Enhanced Protection for Farm and Ranch Workers Act passed in December 2015 brings the protection and compensation of waged, nonfamily farm and ranch workers in line with similar protections in other sectors and other Canadian provinces.

Giving B.C. food processors a boost The Province’s agrifood processing industry is producing quality, great-tasting products for British Columbians made by local processors in communities all over B.C. The B.C. government’s Buy Local program is supporting 20 companies within the sector with over $773,043 in funding combined to continue producing innovative products to share with consumers throughout the province. Local cheese company, Golden Ears Cheesecrafters, is receiving up to $33,750 in Buy Local funding. Located in Maple Ridge, it’s a family affair at Fraser Valley’s newest artisan cheese processing facility. Operated by two sisters, Jenna and Emma Davison, the facility produces a variety of artisan cheeses, fresh cheddar curds and cultured butter that are carefully hand-crafted from grass-fed Jersey milk from their family’s dairy farm, located right next door. Another product made in the facility at Golden Ear Cheesecrafters, that not all British Columbians may be familiar with, is quark. Quark is a low fat, high-protein cream cheese that is made with grass-fed skim milk and contains 150% more protein than plain Greek yogurt. The province’s food and beverage processing industry is made up of nearly 2,500 manufacturers that generated $9.09 billion in sales in 2015. The economic impact from the industry is keeping jobs local, products local and dollars in the local economy. processing industry since 2012 to support food security in B.C. and help local businesses grow and thrive in the competitive agrifood industry. The B.C. government has committed $14 million to the Buy Local Program since 2012, including $6 million over the next three years announced in Balanced Budget 2017. Approximately 200 B.C. agrifood and seafood companies have expanded their reach and sales in communities throughout B.C. since the program began, with the $8 million of funding accessed to date resulting in $29 million in investments through matching funds. The B.C. government’s Agrifood and Seafood Strategic Growth Plan supports the building of domestic markets and maintaining a secure food supply. The plan is a component of the BC Jobs Plan and the roadmap to leading the agrifoods sector to becoming a $15-billion-a-year industry by 2020. The provincial government’s Buy Local program is administered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of British Columbia. Norm Letnick, Minister of Agriculture said the B.C. food and beverage processing industry is on the leading edge of innovation and competitiveness. “With support from the Buy Local program, these products are reaching audiences all over the province.”

Innovation challenge winners bring local tech to BC farms Four B.C. companies have each won $20,000 for developing B.C. technology to help solve a problem identified as part of the BC Ministry of Agriculture and the BC Innovation Council’s Innovation Challenge. The winning companies are using local technology to deter birds from B.C. berry farms, provide up-to-the-minute health checks on crops, turn B.C. wood waste into fully compostable yarn for farm uses, and improve nutrient recovery from farm waste. The winners were selected by a panel of experts, with representatives of the BC Innovation Council, the BC Agriculture Council, Genome BC, the National Research Council, the Investment Agriculture Foundation, SRC Tec, Bioenterprise BC and the federal and provincial governments. The Agritech Innovation Challenge is a partnership between the BC Ministry of Agriculture and the BC Innovation Council with $80,000 in funding provided through Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincialterritorial initiative that provides a $3-billion investment over five years in innovation, competitiveness and market development. The challenge was launched in November 2016 and brought together innovators with industry to develop a product or process to enhance productivity, sustainability and resiliency of B.C.’s agrifood sector. “Congratulations to the winners of the Innovation Challenge. These four companies have used innovative methods to develop sustainable solutions in the agri-tech sector and are a fine example of where the indus-
try is headed. The Government is proud to support their efforts in strengthening B.C.’s prosperous agri-food industry,” said Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. Norm Letnick, B.C. Agriculture Minister says made in B.C. tech is everywhere in our daily lives. “The winners of the Innovation Challenge are extending that reach into agriculture. Successful farming and food production in current times involves the same passion, care and attention to detail as it did in generations before, but the technology involved is incredible, and a key reason, why B.C.’s agrifoods sector continues to grow, setting record annual revenues of $13 billion, and creating 6,100 new jobs from the year before.” Gordon Shank, with Gordon Shank Consulting said he returned to B.C. after a career with projects in around 30 countries, because the energy, growth and opportunity in the BC tech sector drew him back. “I see innovation, especially in the agsector, mainly consisting of incremental major developments, but in between these milestones is an incredible potential for small-scale revolutions, like BioMid yarn. In my experience the support from the National Research Council and the B.C. Government is unrivalled, and I’m already eyeingup solving some new challenges within this mountain of opportunity. There is plenty of room and I’d encourage everyone to jump onboard!”

Producers egg-cited, not yolking about restaurant growth OWEN ROBERTS The burgeoning Canadian restaurant industry represents a good opportunity for farmers – especially those who produce for the breakfast trade - to meet consumers’ food needs. Canada’s 94,000 restaurants are becoming increasingly important players on the food scene. Mike Von Massow, a University of Guelph agriculture and food economics researcher, says dining out now consumes about 35 to 40 per cent of the food dollar. That’s being reflected in menu choices, and in restaurant growth and employment. Restaurant sales grow A new report from the Conference Board of Canada says restaurant numbers have grown by 1.8 per cent since 2011. That compares favourably to the 1.1-per-cent growth in the general population, it says. Strong growth in breakfast traffic is a particularly bright spot for the industry. The report says breakfast meals rose by 6.3 per cent in 2016, and now account for almost one in five restaurant visits. “While it has historically been seen as a low-margin, low-revenue market, some fast food restaurants are capitalizing on rising demand for fast and portable breakfast options by introducing all-day breakfast,” notes the report. Fruit and vegetable prices drop
And despite increased competition and narrow profit margins typically seen in the food sector, restaurant prices rose in 2016 by 2.3 per cent. That was contrary to the overall price of food, which Statistics Canada’s Consumer Price Index shows actually fell by two per cent. That drop was led by fruit and vegetables, which were down 10 to 15 per cent in price from 2015-2016, thanks mainly to the drought easing in California, Canada’s main supplier of vegetables in the winter, as well fresh and frozen meat, and milk and cheese (the latter dropped 1.6 per cent). Jobs-wise, Statistics Canada’s recently released a labour force survey showing total employment in Canada’s food service industry rose to a record 1.2 million people in 2016. That’s nearly seven per cent of the country’s total workforce. In fact, food service was among the top five private-sector job creators in 2016, with employment rising by 11,000 jobs, more than double the 5,400 jobs created in 2015. Restaurants are the fourth-largest private sector employer in the country, and not just for part-time jobs, a popularly held belief. Restaurants Canada, the professional organization representing food services in this country, says full-time employment in the food service industry rose by 7,500 to 690,900 in 2016, while parttime employment increased by 3,500 to 553,700.

Overwintered canola challenges RICHARD KAMCHEN
Shattering losses can be extremely high in spring threshed canola – up to 50 per cent, says Gabert.
Prairie farmers who find their overwintered canola isn’t too tough and the ground still frozen should harvest as soon as possible, the Canola Council of Canada recently advised.
And if left in swath till now, the crop would have been more susceptible to pest issues like mice and fungal pathogens, says Saskatchewan Agriculture’s oilseed specialist Matthew Bernard.
“If we can get some sunshine and some wind, we could easily see this snow go away but still have overnight temperatures that are quite low and frost [to allow] growers to get onto the fields,” says CCC agronomist Keith Gabert in central Alberta.
Four per cent of Saskatchewan’s canola was still left to be combined, according to the province’s last crop report in late November.
As of Nov. 29, only 87 per cent of Alberta’s canola had been harvested, according to the province’s last crop report. Reduced yield and quality CCC explains spring harvested canola can have lower weights, lower oil content, higher free fatty acids in the oil and contain more animal excrement.
Thaw and freezing events since January may have caused additional damage to canola there, Bernard adds. Similar weather conditions occurred in Manitoba, where the canola harvest was 95 per cent completed by around mid-October. “There wasn’t much canola, flax, wheat, etc., left out in Manitoba, just pockets in areas that were wet all summer and fall,” says Manitoba Agriculture’s Anastasia Kubinec. She warns about possible combine plugging and separation efficiency issues if plant material is damp even if the seed is dry. “Farmers will have to make the decision on a field-by-field basis as to when to combine, based on weather conditions, soil conditions and condition of crop remaining in the field,” Kubinec says. Finding buyers added challenge

“I think the crop that’s out there will have some value, [but] it can be as low as 50 per cent of its
original value if it’s no longer suitable for human consumption,” notes Gabert. He adds there’ll be too much to blend into previously harvested crops. Bernard thinks the largest grain firms would be unlikely buyers, but biodiesel channels might be destinations for off-grade canola. CGC study Overwintering canola on such a widespread scale is unusual, so much that the Canadian Grain Commission is asking farmers to submit samples for research to assess winter’s impact on quality.

Alberta farmers weigh unharvested crop options RICHARD KAMCHEN About a million acres of Alberta crops went unharvested in 2016, and farmers there now need to determine how to get the most value from those crops while also managing their cost and risk, says the provincial agriculture department.
Burning comes with its own drawbacks. In addition to requiring permits and taking safety measures beforehand, burning eliminates any value of the crop, provides little to no benefit against crop disease, and could also have negative consequences for soil, Alberta Agriculture says.
How and when the unharvested crop is managed could cause adjusted spring seeding plans, forcing producers to consider shorter season crops and/or early maturing varieties, Alberta Agriculture says.
Producers already lost revenue from last year’s crop, and they need to make the right choices to avoid impacting new crop revenue, according to Trevor Wallace, Alberta Agriculture’s nutrient management specialist. “They really have to know what’s there,” he told Alberta Agriculture’s Call of the Land radio show, explaining farmers need to collect crop samples. “We want to salvage as much as we can.” Harvest considerations Alberta Agriculture recommends that in addition to the potential value of their crop, farmers also consider field conditions, if their crop is still standing or in swaths, how many acres need harvesting, and availability of time and equipment. But before any of that’s done, farmers need to contact their insurance provider. Agriculture Financial Services Corporation clients planning to harvest crops left in their fields first need to contact their AFSC branch office and submit a revised harvest production report, says spokesman Marcus Miller. “If the plan is to put that crop to another use, an inspection will need to take place first,” he adds. Other options Some overwintered crops may not be worth harvesting, and seeding into unswathed crops or burning are options. Alberta Agriculture notes risks to the former, explaining planting into a standing crop can impact new crop establishment and equipment performance, as well as cause volunteer plants and weeds to grow.

Dylan brings his message to Peace One of the stars of Sam Peckinpah’s classic western Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid will be coming to Dawson Creek. Poet, lyricist, Pulitzer, Nobel, Grammy, and Academy award winner Bob Dylan will perform at the Encana Events Centre Friday, July 21. In January Dylan announced release of Triplicate, which drops the end of this month. The album is comprised of 30 new recordings of classic American songs. Dylan has divided the project into three parts; Til the Sun Goes Down, Devil Dolls, and Comin’ Home Late. The Jack Frost-produced album is the 38th studio set from Dylan and marks the first new music from him since Fallen Angels, which was released in early 2016. “Come mothers and fathers, throughout the land”
Last year Esquire magazine bestowed the title of “Greatest American Singer of All Time” on Dylan. “He was just this one lone artist experiencing something unlike anyone, even Elvis, had ever experienced,” author Barney Hoskyns explained to Jeff Slate of the magazine. “He wasn’t one of four Beatles or five Rolling Stones. He was on his own. So he retreated and led a fairly normal, domestic life with his wife at the time, and made some music with The Band under relatively relaxed circumstances. As Joan Baez has said, Dylan has a restless mind that is just not able to sit still within that sort of comfort zone,” said Hoskyns, whose book Small Town Talk: Bob Dylan, The Band, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Friends in the Wild Years of Woodstock examined Dylan’s Woodstock years.
All prices are in Canadian dollars per metric tonne Market Comments - Grain prices remained mostly stable in the three Prairie provinces over the past two weeks except for a further drop in feed barley values in Manitoba. Corn values remained unchanged in Manitoba but softened by $10-$20/T in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Soybean meal values increased by $10/T in Manitoba and Saskatchewan ahead of the latest USDA report while canola meal values remained largely unchanged. Corn DDGS values remained unchanged across the Prairies. Feed peas and faba bean values were slightly higher in Alberta and Saskatchewan at $245/T and unchanged in Manitoba at $265/T. While the recently released USDA report was bearish for corn and soybean meal values for the coming months, the continuing decline of the Canadian dollar value may partially offset any future price decreases for these commodities in western Canada. AB $281 SK $292 MB $270 * Models have been updated to reflect the latest nutrient compositions of feed ingredients, which is done periodically. Feed Pea / Faba Bean Benchmark - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are intended to be used as a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and unbiased estimate of the feeding value of peas and low tannin faba beans in the three regions shown. Feed peas and faba beans will trade at various differentials to the benchmark based on local supply/demand, quality differences and other contract terms. Feed Pea / Faba Bean Feed Benchmark Calculation - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are an estimate of the feeding value of dry peas/low tannin faba beans in Western Canada, based on the value of competing feed ingredients in swine rations. Bi-weekly, tradable prices for the major feed ingredients are collected for the three regions shown above. These prices are then entered into a least cost feed formulation that is typical for grower-finisher swine in Western Canada. A feeding value is then derived for feed peas/ faba beans based on their nutritional characteristics and the prices of the competing feed ingredients. The least cost feed formulation was developed in consultation with the Prairie Swine Centre. In addition to the feed ingredients shown above, the feed formulation also includes canola oil, synthetic lysine, synthetic methionine, synthetic threonine, synthetic tryptophan, mono-dicalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, vitamins and minerals.

Canadian Angus Association president named Calgary Stampede president The Canadian Angus Association congratulates and recognizes our President David Sibbald for his newest roles. At the Calgary Stampede annual general meeting Tuesday night, David became President and Chairman of the Board. He will continue in his role as Canadian Angus Association President until the conclusion of the annual general meeting on Saturday, June 10 in Brandon, MB. David will serve as Calgary Stampede President until 2019. David, his wife Mary Beth and sons Dylan and Adam operate SSS Red Angus. They also maintain a commercial cow-calf operation complemented by their seedstock herd bulls. David is a fifth-generation rancher from a pioneering family on the Sibbald Flats in the Jumping Pound area west of Calgary. He has judged several Canadian national cattle shows along with numerous 4-H shows in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, and is a proven noted industry and organizational leader, planner and thinker. David was elected to the Canadian Angus Association Board in 2013 and the Calgary Stampede Board in 2009. “I am proud and humbled to be leading two of the largest organizations in Canada,” says David. “I am passionate about and visionary toward Angus, agri-business, rural values and volunteerism. The Calgary Stampede and Canadian Angus Association are both internationally respected organizations with great staff and volunteers and it is exciting that my terms overlap for two and a half months.” Yesterday, David was also elected to the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) Board of Directors for a twoyear term. CBBC provides a unified voice in support of the purebred genetics provided within the Canadian beef cattle industry.
Canadian Angus Association CEO Rob Smith is also excited about David’s new roles. “David has a strong background in governance and strategic management and he is a highly respected leader in the agriculture industry. We are so proud that one of Canada’s largest Angus breeders is leading the world-renowned Calgary Stampede and joining our sector’s Canadian Beef Breeds Council. Our Canadian Angus Association Board of Directors has benefitted from what David has learned and achieved at the Calgary Stampede, and I look forward to his expertise and vision coming to CBBC as well.” The Canadian Angus Association (www.cdnangus.ca) is Canada’s largest purebred beef breed organization. The Association represents more than 2,000 members across Canada for the purposes of registering and recording the pedigrees of purebred Angus cattle in the closed HerdBook and promoting the breed across Canada. The member-approved mandate is to maintain breed registry, breed purity and provide services that enhance the growth and position of the Angus breed.

Scratching the itch – common causes of pruritus in pets By Dr. Katie Morton, DVM Winter months often bring with them dry, cold air that can result in dry, itchy skin in our pets. But there are a number of other medical conditions that can result in pruritus, which is the medical term for itchy skin and ears. Fleas, mites and ticks – if your pet has had contact with wildlife or other pets, they may have picked up some of these external parasites. Mites are microscopic and feed on dead skin. They can be extremely itchy and result in hair loss. Mange mites (sarcoptes) can be picked up from wildlife. Demodex mites are actually found in normal dogs in small numbers and live in the hair follicles. They can sometimes overgrow, usually if your pet is young with an underdeveloped immune system, or if they are under stress, or if they have an underlying medical condition resulting in a suppressed immune system. Fleas can be seen with the naked eye, but if your pet has a flea-bite allergy, you may have an itchy dog or cat and never see a flea on them. They can react quite severely to a single flea bite. Cats are also very conscientious groomers and so you may not see any fleas there either, as they have ingested them through grooming (cats can also get tapeworms from ingesting fleas). Most species of ticks become active when the temperature is above 4°C. The winter tick, or moose tick, however, will find a host in the fall as a very small nymph and remain on the host, maturing and reproducing in the winter months.

This species of tick generally prefers ungulates like moose, deer and elk, but can occasionally be found on horses and dogs as well. Fortunately, most of these creepy crawlies are easy to treat and prevent with topical medications, which you can ask your vet about. It is important to rule out these external parasites before looking at other causes of itchy pets. Ringworm is another cause of itchy pets, and can be extremely contagious. Ringworm is not caused by a worm, as the name suggests, but is a fungal infection of the skin resulting in hair loss, usually in a small, discreet area, with or without a red ring around it. It can sometimes be very itchy, but not always. If your vet suspects ringworm, they may take some hair samples and do a fungal culture. Some cats can be carriers of ringworm and not have any symptoms. Sometimes the only sign a cat has, is excessive grooming. Ringworm can be treated, but may take a little more time. It will also be important to clean and disinfect the pet’s environment as much as possible as well, as fungal spores can live dormant on pet hair for a long time. Allergies are a very common cause of itchiness in pets. There are certain patterns and criteria that increase your vet’s suspicion of allergies, but it is also important to rule out the previously mentioned causes of itchiness first, before treating for allergies. Pets can have several different types of allergies, including food allergies, contact allergies (ie to chemicals in carpet, bedding, etc), and environmental allergies, which is sometimes called atopy or atopic dermatitis. Atopy is often a result in a poor skin barrier, and is usually seasonal, when the pet is itchier during certain times of the year in response to environmental allergies. Intradermal allergy testing can usually help determine what your pet is allergic to in the environment, so triggers can be avoided. It can also help guide treatment. Allergy shots can help desensitize your pet to environmental allergies over the long term and decrease other treatments needed. It may not cure the allergies, but it will usually decrease the severity. If the pet meets these criteria, but is affected all year long, or if they have a history of occasional vomiting or diarrhea, or flatulence, they may have a food allergy. Food allergies look a lot like atopy and can only be diagnosed by an elimination diet trial lasting for 8-12 weeks. Since food allergies are most often caused by the type of protein in the diet, your vet may prescribe either a novel protein diet (like kangaroo) or a hydrolyzed protein diet, where the protein is broken up into small enough bits that the pet’s immune system will not recognize which source it came from and eliminate the immune response to it. For a diet trial to be diagnostic of a food allergy, it is important to use a veterinary prescribed food, as many “hypoallergenic” diets that can be bought over the
counter can be contaminated with allergens in the factory where it is made. Veterinary prescription diets are usually made in a dedicated part of the factory to avoid contamination, which is why they tend to cost a bit more. When on a diet trial, it is important to eliminate all other sources of food from the diet, including treats, edible chews, and table scraps. If your dog or cat catches and eats mice, it may also interfere with the diet trial. Anxious dogs will sometimes lick their paws excessively to soothe themselves. This can result in an itchy, red, infected patch of skin, or sometimes just brown discoloration of the hair. This can look like allergies, so it is important to observe your dog to see if there is a trigger that sets them off to licking their paws. Certain types of cancer can also mimic many of these conditions, and may require a biopsy for diagnosis. Re-occurring ear infections are often the first and sometimes the only sign that your pet has allergies. If your pet is scratching their ears, it is important to get it looked at. In cats, itchy ears is usually caused by ear mites. In dogs, there is usually some pre-disposing factor as the underlying cause of ear infections. It can be as simple as their conformation – dogs such as cocker spaniels often have yeast infections simply because the ears are floppy, trapping moisture inside, and because they produce more oil than other breeds. Moisture trapped in the ears from swimming or bathing can predispose to ear infections, as well as excessive hair in the ear canal. Allergies cause the dog to scratch the ear, resulting in trauma where infection can set in. It can sometimes be frustrating for pet owners with itchy pets, as it is not always straight forward to find the cause and treat appropriately. It may take some time and multiple diagnostic tests and/ or treatment trials to find the underlying cause. If you find yourself with one of these pets, it is important to be aware of the many different causes, and work with your vet to get to the root of the problem so your pet can be more comfortable.

Talking softness - before, during, and after Often in clinics I will say to the participants to look for and try to create softness before, during and after the maneuver. What ever they are asking of their horse, try to find the softness throughout. If our horses are soft to the rein, leg and lead line it will show up in many areas but the most noticeable is the head and neck. When a horse understands the request and the request is within the realm of what it has been taught, then the head and neck is soft and relaxed looking and feeling on the lead line or rein. This is only true if the rider has been handling the horse and looking / trying to create softness before, during and after. If we didn’t realize that we needed to ride and handle our horses looking for softness then the horse may completely understand the task or exercise but has been taught to be heavy, stiff and braced. If we release for anything other than softness that is what we get: anything but softness. Softness is not something you can make a horse be. You can make them light but you can’t make them soft. A light horse can have tension, it may move quickly and easily but with tightness. A soft horse cannot be soft and tight or tense. The goal is to try to do enough to create a light horse without sacrificing the softness. The horse is in a different mind space when there is tightness than when they are soft. If we do everything slow it is very easy to keep a horse soft. If you need speed and quick responses then it becomes much more challenging to keep the softness, but that would be the goal.
The feet turning and going the direction you want to go and a horse that is giving to the rein are two different things. You can have a horse turn to the right while they turn their head to the left. If you asked for that kind of head position, great; if you didn’t, then not so great, and the horse would not be considered soft. Many times horses are turned to the right or left with their heads pulled the opposite way but the rider doesn’t realize they are the ones doing it. Anything we purposely or accidentally do 3 times starts to create a habit. Creating good habits is much easier than repairing bad ones. An example of what to look for on the ground is when leading or circling a horse the goal would be to never feel the horse on the line. When you walk off, while your walking and when you stop the line stays loose, never pulls on the handler. When circling the goal is the same, when you send the horse out onto the circle, while he is circling and when you ask for the circling to end the line never gets pulled on by us or the horse and the horse should be looking in towards us not away from us.
These are some signs that softness is on the way and we have been correct in looking for and creating softness. Next time you are out with your horse take notice of what happens when you touch the rein or lead line. Enjoy your time with horses and what they have to offer, Glenn Stewart What is your dream with horse? Whatever your dream may be, if you have the horsemanship, you can live the dream. It’s just that simple. Join us The Horse Ranch this summer and live the dream! Now accepting bookings for the summer horsemanship camps and High and Wild Adventure. Long-term study and professional programs are now available. For more information visit www. thehorseranch.com.
Tightness can come from the horse getting emotional about what is happening and it very often originates from the rider not looking for softness. An example of this would be when riding and you pick up a rein to stop or turn, the moment you touch the rein you should be looking for a soft feel on the other end. The horse should give to the rein by bringing its nose in and down or to the side wherever the pressure is taking it. The opposite of softness is when the rein is touched the horses nose goes up and away from the direction asked or doesn’t move at all. This might seem to some very obvious but to many they have never had a horse actually give to the rein.

And now, personalities As puppies grow their personalities will start to emerge and develop. Their type of personality will become more obvious as they follow you around. If they are outgoing and confident they will become independent quicker than a shy pup. An independent pup will be curious and venture further sooner than a pup who is more uncertain and cautious. A cautious pup will look to the handler for security. Some dogs are quiet and thinking dogs while others are “doers”. The quiet thinkers tend to be calmer and not quite so active. These dogs are easy to have around while doing chores, etc. as they are content to be with you. They do not always have to be on the go and are willing to follow

your guidance. The doers are busy and need to be supervised constantly or they tend to create chaos. These dogs are more independent in their thinking and may not feel the need to listen to the handler- It is important to keep these dogs minds busy as well as give them a lot of physical exercise. The busy personalities take more time and guidance from the handler. Many pups behavior will fall somewhere between the “thinker” and the “doer”. The important element is the handler recognize the dogs personality and treat it accordingly. Each pup is individual with own unique genetics. It is up to the handler to develop the qualities the pup was born with.

While Canada celebrates 150 years this year, thehorses.com note an older anniversary is in the cards this year, the 250th anniversary of horse racing in Canada On July 1, 1767, exactly 100 years before our country’s confederation, a race took place on The Plains of Abraham in Quebec City,” writes Linda Rainey with the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. She notes the Gazette de Quebec recounted the race as follows: “The horse race for a purse of forty dollars was held on Wednesday, first of the month, on the Hill of Abraham. It was easily won by Captain Prescott’s mare Modesty, much to the discomfiture of those who, purporting to know about such things, had wagered against her and were thereby parted from their money.” “From that day forward horse racing has been
part of the fabric of our country. From coast to coast, for generation after generation, people from all walks of life have participated in and enjoyed the sport, whether on grass-root tracks, at agricultural fairs, on frozen rivers dotting the countryside, or in today’s modern facilities,” says Rainey. Racetracks, training centres, agricultural societies, communities, farms and fans are invited to take part in honouring Canada’s racing history by hosting a commemorative mile. Be creative, tell the what your plans to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Horse Racing in Canada are. They’ll publicize your event on the 250th Anniversary pages of the CHRHF website, as well as the special 250th Anniversary social media feeds using #cdnhorseracing250. Wheat commission warns the Feds
This important cash flow management tool allows farmers to defer income on grain sales to balance income throughout the year, avoiding excess swings in taxation levels and encouraging farmers to deliver grain into good market opportunities. “Many farms use this tool to avoid having to choose between losing a sale that might bump them into a higher tax bracket that year, or lose the ability to maximize their revenue due to severe taxation swings,” said Kevin Auch, AWC Chair. Losing this tool would cause a ripple effect throughout the agri-food value chain since the lack of cash flow management could result in farmers’ inability to make business
purchases year round. Canada’s agriculture industry’s competitiveness would also be affected: If farmers are not able to deliver grain when market opportunities arise because of tax swings, Canada will miss out on sales to international competitors due to a lack of available inventory. “For many farmers, eliminating this tool also eliminates the option to sell grain when there is a good price for it. Grain would end up sitting in storage on-farm rather than being sold into the marketplace. This disruption in cash flow is not only a loss to farmers but to the entire value chain.” The 2017 federal budget outlines that a stakeholder consultation is in the works with submissions due on May 24, 2017. AWC will be developing a submission and encourages farmers to reach out to us with their input. Farmers can send their input to Erin Gowriluk, Policy and Government Relations Manager at egowriluk@albertawheat.com.

Salisbury steak with roasted asparagus
Preheat the oven to 475°F. Wash and dry the fresh produce. Slice the potatoes lengthwise into 1-inch-thick wedges. Peel and small dice the onion. Peel and finely chop the garlic. Cut the mushrooms into bite-sized pieces. Snap off and discard the tough, woody stem ends of the asparagus. Place the potatoes on a sheet pan. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt, pepper and ⅓ of the spice blend; toss to thoroughly coat. Arrange in a single, even layer, skin sides down, and roast 26
to 28 minutes, or until browned and tender when pierced with a fork. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving dish, leaving the oven on. Wipe off the sheet pan. While the potatoes roast, in a large pan (nonstick, if you have one), heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil on medium-high until hot. Add the onion, remaining spice blend and ¾ of the garlic; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, 2 to 4 minutes, or until softened and fragrant. Transfer to a large bowl. Wipe out the pan. While the potatoes continue to roast, add the ground lamb and beef and breadcrumbs to the bowl of cooked aromatics; season with salt and pepper. Gently mix until just combined. Using your hands, form the mixture into four 1-inchthick patties. In the pan used to cook the aromatics, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil on medium-high until hot. Add the patties; cook 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate; set aside in a warm place, leaving any browned bits (or fond) in the pan. Add the mushrooms to the pan of reserved fond. (If the pan seems dry, add 2 teaspoons of olive oil.) Cook on medium-high, stirring occasionally, 3 to 4 minutes, or until lightly browned. Add the tomato paste; cook, stirring constantly, 1 to 2 minutes, or until dark red. Add the demi-glace, flour and 1 ¼ cups of water; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently and scraping up any fond, 1 to 2 minutes, or until thickened. Add the cooked patties; cook, spooning the gravy over the patties, 2 to 3 minutes, or until well coated and heated through. Transfer to a serving dish.
Place the asparagus and remaining garlic on the sheet pan used to roast the potatoes. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper; toss to thoroughly coat. Arrange in a single, even layer and roast 4 to 6 minutes, or until the asparagus is bright green and slightly tender. Transfer to the serving dish of roasted potatoes. Serve with the finished patties and gravy. Enjoy!

Shell the peas. Add the potatoes to the pot of boiling water. Cook 14 to 16 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a fork. Drain thoroughly and return to the pot. Off the heat, add the butter. Using a fork, mash the mixture to your desired consistency; season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside in a warm place. While the potatoes cook, in a large, high-sided pan (or pot), heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil on medium-high until hot. Add the mushrooms. Cook, stirring occasionally, 5 to 7 minutes, or until browned.
Add the onion to the pan of mushrooms; season with salt and pepper. (If the pan seems dry, add 1 teaspoon of olive oil.) Cook, stirring occasionally, 2 to 3 minutes, or until softened. Add the ground lamb and beef; season with salt and pepper. Cook, frequently breaking the meat apart with a spoon, 5 to 7 minutes, or until browned and cooked through. Carefully drain off and discard any drippings from the pan. Add the tomato paste to the pan of vegetables and meat. Cook, stirring frequently, 1 to 2 minutes, or until the tomato paste is dark red. Add the peas and spice blend; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, 1 to 2 minutes, or until the peas are bright green and the spices are fragrant. Add the Worcestershire sauce and 1 cup of water; season with salt and pepper. Cook, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan, 2 to 3 minutes, or until the liquid has thickened. Remove from heat; season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer the finished filling to a baking dish. Using a spatula or fork, evenly spread the mashed potatoes over the filling. Sprinkle with the cheese; season with salt and pepper. Bake 12 to 14 minutes, or until lightly browned around the edges. Remove from the oven and let stand for at least 2 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Holy shiitake! Try these mushroom burgers thoroughly drain the mushrooms (discarding the water) and transfer to a cutting board; finely chop. Transfer to a large bowl. Add the ground beef, garlic, hoisin sauce and white bottom of the scallion; season with salt and pepper. Gently mix to combine. Using your hands, form the mixture into two ½-inchthick patties. Transfer to a plate. While the sweet potato continues to roast, in a medium pan (nonstick, if you have one), heat 2 teaspoons of olive oil on medium-high until hot. Add the patties and cook 3 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or until browned and cooked to your desired degree of doneness. Transfer to a plate and set aside in a warm place. Place the buns, cut sides up, on the sheet pan used to roast the sweet potato. Toast in the oven 3 to 4 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned and crispy. Remove from the oven and transfer to a clean, dry work surface. Spread a layer of the miso mayonnaise onto the cut sides of the toasted buns. Top the bun bottoms with the cooked patties. Complete the burgers with the bun tops. Divide the burgers and roasted sweet potato between 2 dishes. Garnish the sweet potato with the green top of the scallion. Enjoy!

THE BIG BEND First district nurse The public health’s Nurse’s Act became real in 1919, and among other items, it allowed nurses to practice under the auspices of the province of Alberta, in communities where the services of medical practitioners were not available at the time. A concerned community would contact the minster of health, and at least five district representatives would be elected. This committee was then responsible for arranging for an office and living quarters, while the government would provide medical supplies and equipment. Small fees were charged for nurses’ services. $1 for the first home visit. For maternity cases, the fee was $10 but covered all post and pre natal visits. In situations where families couldn’t afford the fee, it was free. The first district of Blueberry nurse was Miss Millicent Leppington in January of 1935 (right).

40 The Northern Horizon, March 31, 2017
Focus on oilseeds Since peaking earlier this winter, grain and oilseed markets lost positive momentum during the month of March, fading back to recent lows and weighed down by favourable weather, available supplies and a general lack of bullish motivation.
The United States Department of Agriculture’s quarterly grains stocks and prospective plantings reports on March 31 will provide the next clue of how much American grain moved to date and the acreage outlook for the spring.
Markets have faltered on improving South American crop prospects, while United States wheat futures broke on better moisture prospects for the southern plains’ hard red winter wheat belt. Renewed crude oil selling, unable to sustain a correction from lows last week, represents a riskoff headwind for ag markets that are essentially marking time as we await more definitive updates on North American spring weather patterns and associated timeliness of spring planting.
Chart-wise, nearby May spot bean futures are fighting tooth and nail to hang on to the psychological support line at $10 a bushel, but the contract remains in a downtrend. As of March 22, $10.10 is immediate overhead resistance, but $10.20 is likely the big resistance point (200day moving average).
Oilseeds Chicago soybean futures dipped to their November lows as trade ideas of already record large South American crop prospects seem to expand daily. While demand for U.S. beans remains quite strong - domestic crush and export - the cumulative effect of record U.S., then South American, soybean production remains a negative price influence at this time.
Meanwhile, the November low of $9.92 is the next line of chart support. A break of support there would, territory from a technical perspective, open an abyss into $9.70 to $9.50 a bushel. Canola As the soybean market goes, all too often so too does the canola market. May canola last week slumped through support around $512 to $515 a tonne, then below the 200-day moving average at $508 and now flirts with its January low of $505 a tonne.
Prairie cash basis levels are more wide-ranging as some buyers are still actively sourcing canola, but others are not. This creates some disparity in Prairie canola cash bids. I suspect that as futures weaken, better cash basis will generally begin to emerge as commercial demand remains robust. Modest response The move to fresh lows at $502 has so far stalled out as we see a modest response from the buy side that was finally something more than a shoulder shrug. But support at this level is not yet convincing. The May contract needs to get back above the 200-day average of $508, otherwise a break from here would target $490 as the next line of support. The speculative managed money crowd moved from a modest long to
modest net short position in canola futures. The commercial opinion is canola that overwintered in the field will soon be harvested and immediately move into the pipeline. The exact quantity and quality of that overwintered canola is up for debate, but it’s certainly not going to be inventory that any grower wishes to store for any extended period of time. Domestic and export demand for canola remains strong, although crush margins have trailed off as global vegetable oil markets deteriorated. But the canola market has a tendency to respond favourably going into the spring, and canola’s independent old crop supply and demand outlook appears to be tightening right now. Mike Jubinville of Pro Farmer Canada offers information on commodity markets and marketing strategies.

Potholes - your suspension could be compromised Many of my friends and I complain about the potholes here in the Grande Prairie and northern regions of Alberta. We have lots of reason to complain too, potholes here end up being craters that whole 4 x 4 trucks can get swallowed up in, I swear! And I also swear that those suckers multiply faster than rabbits. It’s almost to the point that sometimes you have to choose which potholes you are going to hit because avoiding them isn’t an option! While we’d like to think we are special, according to Bill Gardiner, potholes are a problem all across Canada. I had the pleasure of interviewing Bill, our favourite Canadian TV Mechanic again, this time in his capacity as a spokesperson for Kal Tire. Bill’s reputation as an automotive mechanic is legendary here in Canada and so it makes great sense that he and Kal Tire have teamed up to educate people about the hidden dangers of hitting potholes. According to Bill and the survey that Kal Tire did (1,000 Canadians responded) 40% of those who hit a pothole say it damaged their vehicle. 39% of those said the damage was to the alignment of their wheels. When you feel the front end of your car vibrating, or shaking, if you feel a wobble in the steering wheel, or a pulling sensation, that’s a good indication that your alignment is out.
A blown tire or a severely damaged rim are rather obvious to spot, and are also common results of hitting potholes too hard or hitting ones that are very deep. However, what most people never consider is the damage they didn’t see or feel right away. A minor tweak in the rim of your wheel can create a leaking situation and depending on where that tweak is located it can mean the integrity of the rim is shot, but you might not realize that the rim is actually the cause of that leak. Your suspension could be compromised. A leaking shock or strut will cause poor handling. Hitting a pothole hard enough can create a reduced ability to steer, absorb and dampen the shock of the impact. It also makes the maintaining of road contact and supporting the vehicle’s weight just a few of the suspension issues that can arise from hitting potholes - either repetitively or in a harsh manner. An interesting, but very disturbing fact that came from the survey conducted by Kal Tire... Of the 32% of motorists who experienced an alignment issue (pulling to one side), only 44% of those drivers had the damage fixed. That means, they have a poorer handling vehicle that is putting themselves and every other motorist at risk potentially.
If nothing more severe than the damage to their pocket book is inflicted on them and others, they are lucky, however an out of align vehicle becomes costly, quickly. Their tires will wear out prematurely, struts and other alignment components are also going to wear out earlier as well. Other mechanical components like the braking system, hoses and lines can also be damaged as the result of a hard enough hit. It’s spring time in Canada, watch for potholes, and if you do strike one with any force or speed, please consider having your front end checked at your local Kal Tire. If you are on your motorcycle, hitting a pothole could have severe consequences, stay safe out there. TALES, TRAILS & GUMBO
Stories and recollections from the settlers of Cotillion, Silver Valley & Fourth Creek
The Crown Land survey In about 1950, a man and Dominion land surveyor Knox McKusker started from the 21st baseline, first done in the 1920s, to survey Township 81, Range 12 (now part of Cotillion). From there they worked east to the Fourth Creek area. Joining McCusker were a pair of young surveyors, C.T. Cuff and Bjorn Rustad. Bjorn was a tall Scandanavian with a beard like Chaucer’s Miller.
