La Glace wins Small Town Saturday Northern Horizon Night title, drops Duchess in finals Your
Team
Duchess grabbed the lead for a day and then just as quick as they earned it, first place was taken back by La Glace on the last day of voting. Readers of the Northern Horizon were drafted to help support. While many went to sleep Tuesday, March 28 claiming Duchess was taking the Big Valley Jamboree’s Small Town Saturday Night contest, by the time many had woken Wednesday and votes were tabulated, the small community of La Glace took the crown. La Glace remained at the top of the leaderboard for the majority of the contest garnering close to 25 per cent of nearly 130,000 online votes cast, earning them the privilege of hosting the grand-prize concert on April 29, 2017 at the La Glace Arena in support of a new regional rec centre. The facility will replace the existing arena that is in much despair from water and structural issues, said Tamara Lunde, member of the La Glace Small Town Saturday Night organizing committee. “Even though we are already a tight knit community we believe this new facility will bring us even closer together, and this is why this is so important to us.” La Glace is a small hamlet of 181 people, with approximately another 1500 people in the surrounding area, located approximately 50 kilometers north east of Grande Prairie. After remaining atop the Small Town Saturday Night Leaderboard for a majority of the contest they were briefly placed in second by the Southern Alberta community of Duchess Alberta only to rally and regain their lead as the contest closed. As the 2017 grand-prize winner, La Glace will host their own mini-Big Valley Jamboree featuring performances by country music stars Gord Bamford, Clayton Bellamy, Alee, Dan Davidson and The Doll Sisters. All funds raised from the concert will benefit La Glace & District Agricultural Society. The evening will be hosted by Big Valley Jamboree emcee Danny Hooper.
“The final stages of this contest engaged the entire Province of Alberta to come together and rally behind the communities of Duchess and La Glace Alberta resulting in the largest number of votes in the history of this contest,” explained Chris Melnychuk, Big Valley Jamboree / Trixstar Productions. “In the end La Glace ended up with winning.” The planning for April 29 concert will begin immediately and tickets are expected to go on sale in the second week of April through the La Glace & District Agricultural Society.

Alberta’s elm pruning ban started April 1 To help keep Alberta Dutch elm disease (DED) free, the Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease (STOPDED) encourages everyone to pay attention to the provincial elm pruning ban between April 1st and September 30th. To help eliminate beetle habitat, it is important to properly prune all dead wood out of your elms and dispose of all pruned elm wood and elm firewood by burning, burying or chipping by March 31. Stored elm wood can harbour the elm bark beetles that can carry DED. “Elm bark beetles, responsible for spreading the deadly DED fungus, feed on healthy elms and breed in dead and dying elm trees,” says Janet Feddes-Calpas, STOPDED executive director. “If elm trees are pruned during the pruning ban period, these beetles which are active at this time can be attracted to the scent of the fresh wound and possibly infect an otherwise healthy elm with DED. Once an elm tree is infected with DED it will die within that year.” Having your tree pruned properly is important. Many trees are killed or ruined annually from improper pruning. Pruning like any other skill requires knowledge and should be done by a professional certified arborist who can determine what type of pruning is necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance and safety of your trees. Topping or removing an excessive amount of live wood is not recommended on any variety of trees and will weaken the tree’s structure. For more information on certified arborists or DED, click the linked websites.

Heightened Risk from Pea Leaf Weevil in 2017 Research shows that treating pea seed with a systemic insecticide product is the most effective control measure to prevent pea leaf weevil damage. “Properly inoculated annual legume crops, like field pea and faba bean, produce most of the nitrogen they require for growth through the growing season via nitrogen fixation carried out by nodules on plant roots,” says Neil Whatley, crop specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Hence, field pea and faba bean are generally grown on nitrogen deficient soil without much, if any, additional synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. When the pea leaf weevil insect pest feeds on the nodules of pea and faba bean seedlings, this natural nitrogen source is greatly compromised, inhibiting optimal pea and faba bean growth throughout the remainder of the growing season as well as decreasing crop yield.” The pea leaf weevil was reported in southern Alberta in 1997 and remained for several years south of highway 1. Since 2013, this insect’s geographic range has greatly expanded into central Alberta, extending as far north as Sturgeon County, north of Edmonton, with lower levels of feeding reported in east central Alberta. “Given that 2016 survey levels were high in the aforementioned areas, there’s a high risk of infestation in the same areas if winter and spring conditions are favourable. A potential predictor of population increase is precipitation in August. As many areas with high weevil populations in 2016 experienced August precipitation, pea and faba bean producers in these areas are advised to plan control strategies for the 2017 crop year.”
After spending the winter as an adult beetle in perennial legumes, adults are attracted to annual and perennial legume crops in spring, including field pea, faba bean, lentil, alfalfa, and bean. “However, egg laying only takes place in soil near field pea or faba bean seedlings, so root nodules of lentil and alfalfa, for example, are not affected. Just prior to egg laying, adult pea leaf weevil insects feed on the margins of seedling leaves resulting in a notched or scalloped leaf appearance, which is not expected to reduce yield. After hatching from eggs, the worm-like larvae proceed downward into the soil where they primarily feed on root nodules resulting in decreased nitrogen fixation by pea and faba bean plants.” Spring weather conditions can alter the timing and severity of pea leaf weevil damage, says Whatley. “Weevils arrive early to pea and faba bean fields if warm temperatures above 20 degrees C persist for more than a few days in late April or early May, potentially corresponding with higher yield losses. Alternatively, if cool weather occurs during the same period, yield is generally not as compromised especially when the crop advances past the 6th node stage before the weevils arrive. In either case, field scouting is required to make control decisions on a field by field basis. It’s also advised not to seed into cold soil.” Yield losses may occur when there are more than 30 per cent of seedlings (3 out of 10 plants along a seed row; assess groups of 10 plants in multiple rows) with feeding damage on the clam leaf before the 6th node stage in peas. The clam leaf is

the most recently emerged leaf. “Most research hasn’t shown that control of weevils using foliar insecticide prevents yield loss. The ineffectiveness of foliar spraying probably arises because weevils have already laid enough eggs to significantly damage root nodules when sprays are applied or because healthy weevils immigrate after spraying. According to research on the Prairies, nodule protection is more effective when pea seed is treated with a systemic insecticide product prior to seeding. Faba bean may be similarly protected, but this requires investigation.” If feeding damage is only apparent on the older, lower leaves and not on the newer clam leaf, says Whatley, the weevil has probably already laid eggs and spraying would be of no value. “As such, producers should scout for damage on the clam leaf and not on lower leaves. Since pea leaf weevils migrate into field pea and faba bean fields, foliar damage is initially observed along field edges. Foliar insecticides applied early in an infestation to field edges may be a sound economic decision; however, additional on-farm research will provide more clarity. Limited spraying would also reduce the risk of affecting beneficial species, such as ground beetles, that may help manage pea leaf weevil populations via predation.” For more information, contact the Alberta AgInfo Centre at 310-FARM (3276).

Albertans have the opportunity to share ideas about the future of provincial and national agriculture programs through an online survey. Alberta is working with the federal government, other provinces and territories to develop a new five-year agricultural policy framework to replace the current Growing Forward 2 agreement, which expires on March 31, 2018. Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry said negotiating the next agriculture policy framework with the federal government is an important conversation. “It’s a about how we can support our sector, our rural communities, and our producers. It’s important that we hear from producers and other stakeholders so that we can craft an agreement that supports sustainable growth and makes life better for Alberta producers and their communities. When agriculture succeeds, rural Alberta succeeds.” The online survey is open to all Albertans, but will be of particular interest to those in the agriculture sector. The survey includes discussion about key priorities such as: markets and trade, science, research and innovation, risk management, environmental sustainability and climate change, value-added agriculture and agri-food processing, public trust. Agriculture sector representatives will also be able to provide input during a series of four consultation roundtables being held over the next few weeks. When completed, the Growing Forward 2 agreement will have invested more than $400 million in strategic programs aimed at assisting producers, processors and value-added agri-businesses in advancing Alberta’s agriculture, agri-food and agribased sectors. The survey is open until May 8, 2017.

British Columbia wineries and breweries receive funding From soil, sunshine and scenic vineyards to local small town brews, B.C. wineries and breweries are giving British Columbians a diverse sensory experience that is as extraordinary as the province itself. The provincial government’s Buy Local program is providing 15 B.C.-based wineries and breweries with a combined total of up to $456,193 in funding to promote their local products through buy local projects, such as advertising campaigns and developing promotional materials. Pacific Western Brewing Company is receiving up to $30,844 of Buy Local funding. As B.C.’s largest independent, locally owned brewery, the company has crafted a beer made solely with ingredients from B.C. called Cariboo Springs Lager. The funding will help launch marketing campaigns and create promotional materials for the new brew.
The creation of Cariboo Springs Lager from local ingredients is supporting B.C.’s farmers and families that help make Pacific Western Brewing’s craft possible, while bringing a passion for local agrifoods and great tasting beer together. Pacific Western Brewing was established in 1957 on a fresh water spring in Prince George. Over the past 60 years, the company has achieved
many milestones. The brewery is bringing B.C. flavours to beer lovers all around the globe. The Buy Local program has committed almost $1.6 million in funding to B.C.’s beer and wine industry since 2012 to support food security in B.C. and help local businesses grow and thrive in the competitive market. The B.C. government has committed
$14 million to the Buy Local Program since 2012, including $6 million over the next three years announced in Balanced Budget 2017. Approximately 200 B.C. agrifood and seafood companies have expanded their reach and sales in communities throughout B.C. since the program began. To date, $8 million of funding has been accessed, resulting in $29 million in investments through matching
funds. The B.C. government’s Agrifood and Seafood Strategic Growth Plan supports the building of domestic markets and maintaining a secure food supply. The plan is a component of the BC Jobs Plan, and the roadmap to leading the agrifoods sector to becoming a $15-billion-a-year industry by 2020. The provincial government’s Buy Local program is administered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of British Columbia on behalf of the Province of B.C.
Applications are available at: http://iafbc. ca/funding-opportunities/buy-local/ Mike Morris, MLA for Prince GeorgeMackenzie noted support for B.C. companies is keeping jobs local, growing the local economy and producing great tasting quality products to enjoy. “The Buy Local program is connecting local producers and processors with British Columbians, so they can share their stories and strengthen the bond between the consumer and product.”

What happens when instinct kicks in A pup that becomes your shadow will mature and be ready for work earlier than a pup who is left to his own devices. If a pup is around the livestock helping do chores his working instinct will kick in earlier than a pup who is not exposed to livestock. The movement of the stock will trigger a reaction from the pup and his instinct to work will kick in. The pup will show signs of wanting to chase or nip the stock. At this point either give the pup a bit of praise or simply carry on with the chores. As the pup gets braver and more confident he will start to go farther after the stock before coming back to you. As his confidence grows and he begins to chase more it is important not to scold the pup. Giving the pup a scolding when he first starts
working can be easily misinterpreted. You may be scolding him for something like not coming back soon enough or not lying down when asked. The pup may think he is being scolded for trying to move the stock. Rather than scold the pup for trying to work refrain from taking him to the stock until he is ready to start formal training. If the pup is very sensitive a serious scolding may put him off working stock for fear of being wrong. A soft dog is a pleaser and does not like to get into trouble. If your pup is a soft sensitive type of pup then it is your responsibility to treat this pup with the same sensitivity he is showing you. If a pup has been discouraged in his first attempts to work it can seriously set him back. It is important to keep in mind that there is no way to make these dogs work. It is the dogs natural desire and instinct that dictates if they work or not Carol Nelson If anyone has suggestions for future articles please let me know. 250-772-5315

What’s new in the flea and tick world? In the past we traditionally tell clients that ticks are not much of a problem in the peace region, however traveling owners with their pets should think about tick and flea prevention. The last few years we have been seeing more dogs, and horses with ticks on them, or had owners report finding ticks on their dogs. Ticks can carry disease such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma. To report currently no dogs have been diagnosed in the peace region, but one case of Ehrlichia, and one case of Anaplasma has been diagnosed in the Prince George area. Also multiple cases of Lyme disease, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia have been diagnosed around the Edmonton area. These diseases are considered blood borne illnesses, and can cause vague signs of lethargy, anorexia, fevers, brushing etc. They can be mild or life threatening. What can you do about it? Let me take a few moments to tell you about a few products, some old some new, that can help with ticks and fleas. Advantix is a topical medication that kills the ticks before they bite your dog, this lasts for approximately twenty-eight days. When used in combination with advantage multi your pet will have flea and tick protection for approximately one month, as well as the benefit from some internal parasite control. Advantix can also help reduce the amount of insect bites from mosquitos, and blackflies. Let’s face it. No one likes being bit by insects including your pets! There medications are very toxic to cats!! If you have a cat in the house be very careful. Bravecto, while being more expensive, will give your dog flea and tick protections for 12 weeks!! Bravecto comes as a chewable tablet, and is not considered toxic to cats. Bravecto does not have a kill on contact like the Advantix, so if you are travel-
ing to an area with high risk for tick borne diseases, then the topical may still be the safest choice. Using Bravecto around the peace area however is a great option. There are multiple other mediations at the pet store labeled for ticks and fleas. As Veterinarians we cannot say how safe or well these products work. We recommend using the veterinary labeled products only. If you find ticks on your pet, you should apply medication provided by your veterinarian, and remove them following the guidelines below. Always wear rubber gloves to protect yourself from possible injury or infection. 1. Grasp the tick very close to the skin with a pair of fine-tipped tweezers. 2. With a steady motion, pull the tick’s body away from the skin. Avoid crushing the tick to prevent infection. 3. After removal, clean your dog’s skin with soap and warm water and dispose of the tick by placing it in alcohol or flushing it down the toilet. Following these steps can help ensure the successful removal of ticks. Never use petroleum jelly, a hot match, nail polish or other products to remove a tick. The most common tick in the peace region is called the winter tick, which can be found on moose, deer, horses, and cattle. It is uncommon to find them on your pets or yourself. Depending where you travel in BC and Alberta you may come across the Brown Dog Tick and the Rocky Mountain Tick. Here is a helpful website to learn more about ticks, and tick borne disease in North America: www.dogsandticks.com. If you have any other questions please contact your veterinarian.

Livestock producers receiving tax relief for 2016 The livestock tax deferral provision allows producers in designated drought regions who are facing feed shortages, to defer a portion of their 2016 sale proceeds of breeding livestock to the next year. The cost of replacing the animals in the next year offsets the deferred income, thereby reducing the tax burden associated with the original sale. Producers in those designated regions can request the livestock tax deferral provision be applied when filing their 2016 income tax returns. “Extreme weather created difficulties for Canada’s livestock industry across the country last summer. This tax deferral will help producers manage
the impacts of the drought, and to focus on rebuilding their herds in the coming year,” said Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Low moisture levels resulted in significant forage shortages for livestock producers in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. One option for producers is to reduce their breeding herd in order to manage feed supplies. In addition to the livestock tax deferral provision, producers have access to assistance through existing Growing Forward 2 Business Risk Management programs, which include AgriInsurance, AgriStability and AgriInvest.

The Government of Canada released a list of additional designated regions in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia where livestock tax deferral has been authorized for 2016 due to drought conditions. In November 2016, the Government of Canada announced the initial list of designated regions in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec for livestock tax deferral purposes. Ongoing analysis has indicated the need for a final list of designated regions for 2016. That final list will be provided as soon as authorization has been received.

Statement by Government of Canada on securing market access for pulses from Canada to India The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade today issued the following statement on securing continued access for Canadian pulses to India: “Following representations to the Government of India and visits to Delhi earlier this month by both ministers, Canada has secured continued access to the Indian market for Canadian pulse exporters. India has granted a series of exemptions since 2004 to an import regulation regarding mandatory fumigation of imported crops, in recognition of Canada’s cold climate. The end of the current exemption on March 31, 2017, had threatened to disrupt trade. This new exemption means that Ca-
nadian pulse exports leaving Canada on or before June 30, 2017, will not require fumigation in Canada. We will maintain on-going trade while officials on both sides continue to work towards a longterm, science-based solution. In 2016, pulse exports to India were worth over $1.1 billion and accounted for 27.5 percent of Canada’s global pulse exports. Exports of Canadian pulses to India are a key aspect of Canada’s bilateral trade relationship with India, helping make Canadian farmers more competitive at home and abroad. The Government of Canada has worked together with industry and provincial governments to secure this exemption with the Government of India which will benefit Canadians and Canadian farmers.”

Yes, yes, GM potatoes are going in the ground In 2016, no acres were seeded to J.R. Simplot’s genetically engineered first-generation Innate potato lines in Canada — but industry experts say 2017 will be a different story. “Other than plot-sized production there was no commercial production in Canada this year because of the timing,” says Kevin MacIsaac, general manager at the United Potato Growers of Canada. “But farmers are interested and planning to plant next year.” The four potato varieties — Russet Burbank, Ranger Russet, Atlantic and Snowden—are intended for the fresh and chipping sectors.
“Health Canada has been pretty stringent on identifying acrylamide in various starchy foods and recommending lowering it when possible, so our potatoes would meet that need as well,” says Cole. In Canada, the varieties underwent pre-market safety assessments by CFIA for release into the environment and use as feed, and by Health Canada for use as food. Julienne Isaacs Grain News
Doug Cole, Simplot’s U.S. spokesperson, says Health Canada and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) approvals came in the spring, too late for the company to make arrangements for seed and spring planting. But Cole says Simplot hopes to work with Canadian grower co-operatives and processing companies in time for 2017 planting. “There are advantages that make these potatoes suited for Canada,” says Cole. “One is that they have less bruising and there would be significantly higher packouts in Canada — more Grade 1 potatoes for use in the fresh market.” The second trait is lower acrylamide, a chemical compound linked to cancer that forms in starchy foods cooked to high temperatures. Asparagine, the amino acid that forms acrylamide when potatoes are fried or baked, is reduced in Simplot’s potatoes. A Pioneer Registered Red Angus Herd Established in 1962

AB farmers weigh unharvested crop options Richard Kamchen About a million acres of Alberta crops went unharvested in 2016, and farmers there now need to determine how to get the most value from those crops while also managing their cost and risk, says the provincial agriculture department. Producers already lost revenue from last year’s crop, and they need to make the right choices to avoid impacting new crop revenue, according to Trevor Wallace, Alberta Agriculture’s nutrient management specialist. “They really have to know what’s there,” he told Alberta Agriculture’s Call of the Land radio show, explaining farmers need to collect crop samples. “We want to salvage as much as we can.” Harvest considerations Alberta Agriculture recommends that in addition to the potential value of their crop, farmers also consider field conditions, if their crop is still standing or in swaths, how many acres need harvesting, and availability of time and equipment. But before any of that’s done, farmers need to contact their insurance provider. Agriculture Financial Services Corporation clients planning to harvest crops left in their fields
first need to contact their AFSC branch office and submit a revised harvest production report, says spokesman Marcus Miller. “If the plan is to put that crop to another use, an inspection will need to take place first,” he adds. Other options Some overwintered crops may not be worth harvesting, and seeding into unswathed crops or burning are options. Alberta Agriculture notes risks to the former, explaining planting into a standing crop can impact new crop establishment and equipment performance, as well as cause volunteer plants and weeds to grow. Burning comes with its own drawbacks. In addition to requiring permits and taking safety measures beforehand, burning eliminates any value of the crop, provides little to no benefit against crop disease, and could also have negative consequences for soil, Alberta Agriculture says. How and when the unharvested crop is managed could cause adjusted spring seeding plans, forcing producers to consider shorter season crops and/or early maturing varieties, Alberta Agriculture says.

sale was complete, but moving from inception of an idea to purchasing the farm to completion of the sale was anything but. Negotiations began in 2014 and went on for about four months before an agreement was reached between the brothers and their aunt, who was negotiating the sale on behalf of her father. Transition planning “It was a very open transition,” Kyle recalls. “The biggest thing we had to figure out was, is this even possible? Can we service the debt?” By the time they reached an agreement, they owned 70 per cent of the assets of Arlington Farms. Farmboys Inc. – a name that’s a tip of the hat to their father, Kent, who died in a farming accident in 1993 – was formed. “That’s what our father raised – two farm boys,” Bryan says. Today’s farm is 3,000 acres, with about 1,400 acres of potatoes, 1,200 acres of cereals and the rest going to forages. Even after the negotiations were over and the papers signed, the transition to full ownership was a challenge, Bryan says. Arlington Farms owned the stock from the previous growing year and still had employees on its payroll to handle that crop. Meanwhile, Farmboys was working toward full operation. Part of the sales agreement, however, provided a detailed transition plan that outlined just about every scenario the two farms could encounter during the changeover. The agreement even covered snowstorms. “It would have been difficult to get up in the middle of a snowstorm and wonder who is responsible for cleaning the yard. It can be an issue if you let it be an issue, but stick to your transition plan and it’s OK,” Bryan says. He notes the plan outlined which farm staff did the clearing, who paid
the employee’s wages and who paid the tractor’s fuel when the yard was cleared of snow. Farm adjustments In the business they created, Kyle and Bryan say they’ve deliberately adjusted their cropping plan. Bryan had noticed over the years that about 25 per cent of the crop was always a challenge – whether during planting, harvest or sometime in between. When the Maynards were going through the purchasing process, they opted to reduce potato production by 25 per cent, making the operation tighter. “It seemed like Arlington Farms was always about 25 per cent too thin,” Kyle says. “It would require investing in more equipment as well as more help to remain Arlington Farms size.” Farmboys wasn’t ready for either yet. “In the years to come, we’ll definitely look at growing. But now, this is much more manageable. It allows us to focus on quality rather than quantity. If we want to grow, I feel we’ll be more groomed for that later.” Bryan and Kyle say they were fiercely competitive with each other as children, whether it was during a hockey game in the yard in the winter or playing baseball in the summer. Today, as they walk the same farmyard they played in, they’ve redirected their competitive natures to take on potato farming.

Knowing an opportunity when you see it is key to building a successful business, say two Prince Edward Island brothers. So are preparation and confidence in your skills. When the opening came to purchase their grandfather’s farm near Summerside and walk into a turn-key potato operation, Bryan and Kyle Maynard knew it was their chance. “When the opportunity came up, we were both excited to take this on,” 31-year-old Kyle says of the 2015 farm purchase. The choice was either buy the farm or let it go. “We figured it could be something we’re good at.” “I feel we had the expertise and experience to give us the right mix for success,” adds Bryan. The brothers grew up on the farm, and Kyle went on to become a licensed machinist. He eventually moved from the shop into the office of an aerospace company where he became a customer service manager, dealing with international clients and gaining financial experience. Meanwhile, Bryan, who is 33, continued to work alongside their grandfather, gaining invaluable first-hand experience. Their grandfather owned Arlington Farms and was a processing-potato grower for Cavendish. His decision, at age 80, that it was time to retire was a call to action for the brothers. They immediately went to work creating their business plan, securing financing and putting opportunity to work for them. With product from the previous year still in storage – and the planting for the year ahead already laid out – Bryan and Kyle found themselves in a good position. “We were in a unique situation where we hit the ground running,” Bryan says. “We had a contract to sell to the same client. A lot of the same employees were staying around.” Taking over the operation was fast once the

Growing craft beer sector thirsty for local malt CNS Canada — Craft breweries are a growing subsector of the Canadian beer industry, but the increased variety of local drink options are not necessarily 100 per cent homegrown, as a lack of domestically produced specialty malts forces brewers to look far afield to meet their needs. “We get our base malt locally, but we don’t have any maltsters in the province making the specialty malt we need,” Colin Enquist, sales and marketing manager with PEG Beer Co. in Winnipeg, said via email. The specialty malt being imported from the U.K., Germany, and other countries “comes down to the availability and some suppliers just having a better product,” he said. Malt is created through a three-step process which sees grain soaked, germinated, then kilned, converting the starches in the grain into sugars. Variations in that process, from the grain used to how long the end product is kilned or roasted, can impact the flavour of the resulting beer. “We’ve actually had a couple people come into the pub and ask if they opened a specialty malt shop if we’d be interested in buying more locally grown malt,” said Enquist, adding “we absolutely would buy all local if we could and it was to the quality we need.” An added irony of the situation is that in some cases the European malt finding its way into Canadian beers could have been created using Canadian barley to begin with, said Lawrence Warwaruk of Farmery Estate Brewery at Neepawa, Man.
The Farmery brewery creates beer using grain grown on its own farm, but that barley is still malted offsite through an agreement with the Malteurop facility in Winnipeg. “There is definitely a market for specialty malts,” said Warwaruk, adding that while the large malting companies “do a fantastic job of what they do,” specialty malts have a higher value and could find a home both domestically and even abroad. “You need to create a demand for locally sourced barley, malted locally, and sold locally,” he said. His company has looked into malting its own grain as well. The Canadian Malt Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) in Winnipeg runs training programs a few times a year for aspiring maltsters and those already in the industry. Peter Watts, managing director of the CMBTC, noted the craft malting sector is very small in North America, accounting for less than one per cent of the total malt production. He estimated that of the 40 to 50 craft maltsters in North America, only about half a dozen were in Canada. However, he said, there was plenty of interest from the craft industry. “With the growth and expansion in the craft brewing industry in the last ten years, it has created demand for craft maltsters,” said Watts. From a theoretical perspective, malting grain is rather basic, but in practice “it’s a pretty big investment up front,” said Watts.
Matt Hamill of Red Shed Malting in Red Deer went through the CMBTC course and is now operating a small-scale maltster. The company’s genesis came from a conversation between Hamill’s father, a farmer, and his brother, who was brewing his own beer. “Why are we getting malt from Germany, when we grow pretty amazing malt-quality barley right here on the farm?” was the question asked, which, after a number of steps along the way, eventually led to a malt house. “We certainly felt, and still do feel, that there is a need and a place for craft maltsters,” said Hamill. “We can play around with different barley varieties and production methods,” he said, adding that the smaller scale also allows them to work closely with craft brewers “to make sure we’re giving them exactly what they’re looking for.” Craft brewing also uses more barley to make the same amount of beer, said Hamill, noting craft beer may need three to seven times more barley compared to mass-produced beers, as brewers are not supplementing with corn, sugar or other adjuncts. “The big maltsters make a great base malt, but we feel there is an opportunity to do some unique things and put our own twist on it,” said Hamill, adding that “seeing your product make it into beer that you can get at the local liquor store is a pretty amazing thing.” Phil Franz-Warkentin writes for Commodity News Service Canada, a Winnipeg company specializing in grain and commodity market reporting. The 4-H Heritage families initiative is an opportunity The 4-H Heritage Families initiative is an opportunity for multigenerational 4-H families to tell their stories. Families with a strong 4-H history are encouraged to share their history through a brief description of their participation in 4-H. “In the spirit of celebrating 100 years of 4-H in Alberta, it’s important to showcase our history and our future,” says Susann Stone, executive director, 4-H Council of Alberta. “The collection of multigenerational 4-H families’ stories demonstrates the strength of 4-H’s roots and showcases the evolution of the program through generations.”
4-H Alberta will collect the stories and photos of multigenerational families that will be displayed at the 4-H signature events in 2017 as part of the 100 years of 4-H in Alberta celebrations.
and photos. “We want to hear the stories of how skills developed in 4-H have benefited the family and contributed to its success, and why joining 4-H has been a tradition within your family.”
“There are lots of third-and fourthgeneration 4-H families out there with great stories to tell,” says Stone. “Great grandpa or grandma may have been in a grain or beef club and now the grandchildren are in computers or small engines. We want to hear their stories.”

Kraft Heinz Co. has laid off 200 white-collar workers in Canada and the United States. Michael Mullen, the company’s senior vice-president of corporate and government affairs, says the company is realigning its administrative functions to be more efficient. The company didn’t say where the layoffs occurred. Kraft Heinz is dually headquartered in Pittsburgh and Chicago since the Pittsburgh-based H.J. Heinz Co. and Kraft Foods Group of Illinois merged two years ago. The company has about 41,000 employees worldwide. The workers being laid off have all been notified and Mullen says the company appreciates their contributions.

JBS suspends Brazil beef output amid import bans Brazil’s JBS SA, the world’s biggest meatpacking company, announced on Thursday it had suspended beef production at 33 of its 36 Brazilian plants amid the corruption scandal that has caused some of the country’s biggest export markets to ban Brazilian meats. Agriculture Minister Blairo Maggi said a police investigation, which alleges that meat processors paid bribes for inspectors to turn a blind eye to unsanitary or irregular activity, was exaggerated and wrongly challenged the quality of one of the country’s most important exports. But it has battered demand for Brazilian meats since Friday nonetheless.
Thursday, accumulating a 10 per cent drop over the past week. The meatpacker, whose Canadian assets include one of the biggest beef plants in the country at Brooks, Alta., said its Brazilian plants would resume production next week at about two thirds of capacity, adding that the company is focused on maintaining employment of its 125,000 workers in Brazil. — Reporting for Reuters by Tatiana Bautzer and Brad Haynes; additional reporting by Anthony Boadle in Brasilia.
JBS and BRF SA, the world’s largest poultry exporter, are among dozens of firms targeted in the meatpacking industry investigation by Brazil’s Federal Police. Both companies have denied any wrongdoing. Egypt became the latest country to halt imports of Brazilian meat on Thursday. The move followed partial or complete bans by China, Mexico, Canada, the European Union, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Chile over the past week. Australia is expected to seize on China’s suspension of meat imports from Brazil, the world’s biggest beef and poultry exporter, to clinch a deal soon on beef exports.

TALES, TRAILS & GUMBO
Stories and recollections from the settlers of Cotillion, Silver Valley & Fourth Creek
Left, “They Came to Learn” by Lynnelle Friesen Grade Two
Spring Thoughts by A. Dolen A flock of crows flew across the sky and the rode the wind with raucous cry. They tumbled about up there on high like children in the spring. As I stood and watched I had to go on a journey I take every year or so where the wind can whilste or whisper low Thru pine trees on the hill.
Then I sat in a sheltered place.

AgriClear talks collab with Verified Beef Production Plus AgriClear, North America’s premier online transaction and payment platform for cattle buyers and sellers, today announced it is entering into a collaborative marketing agreement with Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+), a national, industryled program providing verification of Canadian beef production practices at the farm, ranch and feedlot.
new ways to help VBP+ registered operations enhance their market efforts and extend the reach of their cattle marketing programs,” said Cecilie Fleming, Alberta rancher and Chair, VBP+ Management Committee. “Adding an AgriClear cattle listing link to our new, national website enhances our registered operations by showcasing VBP+ attributes of marketed cattle in Canada.”
Formerly Verified Beef Production or VBP, VBP+ is delivered nationally under the umbrella of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and the Beef Cattle Research Council. Validating production practices for animal care, biosecurity, the environment and food safety at the primary production level enables registered VBP+ operations to publicly demonstrate their commitment to responsible stewardship of both cattle and resources. Under the terms of this agreement, AgriClear will include VBP+ registered users on its online platform and VBP+ will promote the AgriClear livestock platform and settlement services to beef cattle producers across Canada. AgriClear and VBP+ have also agreed to work together on marketing initiatives.
VBP+ has committed to aligning with the indicator and verification work of the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, a multi-stakeholder initiative focused on advancing sustainability in the Canadian beef industry, of which AgriClear is a member. VBP+ was also involved in the McDonald’s Sustainable Beef Pilot Project. “This new agreement connects us to a progressive, innovative industry leader as we continue our efforts to enhance the profile of AgriClear’s brand and value proposition throughout the Canadian cattle industry,” said David Moss, Vice President and Co-Founder, AgriClear. “We are proud to join forces with VBP+ and to play a role in advancing their important program for advocating sustainable beef production, while also delivering the benefits of our unique transactional platform to their membership.” “By collaborating with AgriClear we are finding

New code for handling of laying hens Powerful tool
TRUDY KELLY FORSYHE Egg Farmers of Canada and the National Farm Animal Care Council released a revised Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Layers this week. “The new code provides progressive standards for hen welfare in Canada,” poultry welfare expert Dr. Ian Duncan, representing the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies on the code committee, said in a media release. “We worked diligently for almost four years to secure these important new welfare commitments.” Nationally developed The code committee leading the update was made up of 17 individuals, including egg farmers, animal welfare and enforcement representatives, researchers, transporters, egg processors, veterinarians and government representatives from across Canada. A five-person scientific committee including research and veterinary expertise in laying hen behaviour, health and welfare assisted. The public and all stakeholders were able to provide input on the code during a public comment period in the summer of 2016. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s AgriMarketing Program, under Growing Forward 2, provided the funding for the update.
Glen Jennings, an egg farmer and chair of the code development committee, said the updated code of practice is an important tool for egg farmers across the country. It also serves as a powerful tool to meet rising consumer, marketplace and societal expectations relative to farm animal welfare. It is the result of in-depth scientific evaluation and rigorous discussion and the outcome balances hen welfare, behaviour and health in a manner that is sustainable and achievable by farmers. Farmer commitment “Canada’s more than 1,000 egg farmers are deeply committed to and strive for continuous improvements when it comes to the care and wellbeing of their hens,” Roger Pelissero, chairman of Egg Farmers of Canada, said in the release. “Egg Farmers of Canada value the leadership of the code committee and their dedication to evidence-based standards that serve as a key building block to our national Animal Care Program.” The layer code is the ninth code of practice updated through NFACC’s code development process. It is available on the NFACC website.

The second half of section 14, township 80, range 8, west of 6th meridian was the land chosen for homesteading and a farm site was established on the south side of the southeast corner. The first home was immediately east of the creek, the next further east on top of the knoll.

You have to get ready for another April canola harvest NEIL BILLINGER Saskatchewan and Alberta farmers with crop remaining in the field will be counting on some cooperative weather in the coming weeks. Saskatchewan Crop Insurance estimates about 1.3 million acres need to be combined, mainly in the northern half of the province. Ian Epp is a Canola Council of Canada agronomy specialist covering northwest and west-central Saskatchewan. Epp, in a March 28 interview, says there is variable snow cover with the melt complete in the Kindersley-Rosetown area. “I have heard rumours of a few guys pulling the combines out,” says Epp. “I don’t know if they are in the fields yet, I don’t think so. I think harvesting will start, as long as the weather continues to hold, probably in the next week to 10 days.” Epp says there tends to be more crop out closer to the Alberta border, particularly north and west of Kindersley.

Take samples The Canola Council advises growers to get a sample to assess quality. “Take it to an elevator and see what kind of condition your crop is in,” Epp says. “That might change how you manage it, when you harvest it, how you harvest it and what bins you put it in.” Farmers are also encouraged to send a sample to the Canadian Grain Commission which is studying the impact of snow on end-use functionality of canola. Most observers expect canola to overwinter better than cereal crops, but issues could arise with oilseed quality as well. Epp indicates there has been quite a bit of variability with overwintered canola in the past. Some years, the canola coming off in spring is almost as good as fall with little quality change. Other years, it is sample canola with very poor quality. “I kind of expect this spring that we are going to see some pretty good canola and maybe stuff that had a pretty rough winter,” says Epp. Determining factors include temperature, moisture going into and out of harvest and if there are any rodents disturbing the swath. More information The Canola Council of Canada has additional information on spring harvest tips on the Canola Watch website.

Experts optimistic about winter wheat condition RICHARD KAMCHEN Fall conditions were ideal for winter wheat to establish. “With the ample amount of precipitation last fall, this created ideal growing conditions for the winter wheat crop,” says Janine Paly, an agronomist with Ducks Unlimited Canada. “The majority of the crops across the Prairies were able to develop a well-established crown system, which is one of the key factors for winter survival.” “We shouldn’t have too many winter kill issues, at least from the winter temperatures,” adds Manitoba’s farm production extension specialist Rejean Picard. Weather station reports Weather stations that track soil and air temperature showed good separation between the soil temperature and the cold tolerance of winter wheat in Manitoba.
to be out scouting early. “In Alberta, stripe rust has been known to overwinter over the past years, however producers should be scouting for Wheat Streak Mosaic as well as this disease resurfaced once again last year,” says Paly.
Fields that should be monitored closely are in regions that experienced water pooling in low lying regions due to warm weather or a rain storm in March, followed by freezing temperatures at night, says Paly. A layer of ice can cause lack of respiration and damage to occur. But spring flooding shouldn’t be much of a cause for concern, Picard indicates. In its hardened and dormant stage, winter wheat can stay for weeks under standing water. And the crop will remain in its winter stage until soil temperatures rise above 9 C, by which time the water will likely be gone.
Marketing Prairie farmers only planted 595,000 acres of winter wheat last fall, according to Statistics Canada, and that’s down from the previous year’s 610,000, and well off recent years of 900,000-plus. But that’s no signal of high prices to come, as values are bound by the direction of competing wheats, explains DUC agrologist Paul Thoroughgood. He adds that producers seeking optimum prices should determine demand from ethanol and feed plants, as well as local millers, and not just elevators.
Expert advice Paly recommends growers now be patient and give their fields time to recover. “Typically, I tell producers to walk away from the field until they are halfway through spring seeding to evaluate the plant stand.” As for diseases, it is best management practices

Canada’s most rider friendly communities announced The second round of voting in Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest has concluded. Although the western conference was the only one to be decided upon in this round, it was one heck of a contest between Drumheller & Port Alberni. Nisku sadly, didn’t seem to get in on the action. Drumheller and Port Alberni went at it hard. The contest became very heated with both sides declaring that there was no way the other side could have that many votes coming in! However, they did and the audit shows that Port Alberni came out the victor. From the voting patterns we concluded that Port Alberni’s population tended to vote far later in the day and it almost seemed that gave Drumheller a false sense of security. In the end, these two communities showed the pride and sense of community spirit we were hoping to see. Port Alberni, won out this year, but both communities are truly winners! I want to thank all of the communities that were nominated, and those that have been knocked out of the competition thus far. It is truly rewarding to see the communities that riders love to ride to; it has lengthened the bucket list for a lot of us! Drumheller, you gave it a good fight, hopefully we will see you in the competition again! Next, Cape Breton and Port Alberni go head to head. Voting for the final round to determine the winner from the 2016 riding season in Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest begins April 13th, may the best community win.
We want to acknowledge the commitment of all of our wonderful sponsors without whom this contest could not happen: EastLink TV, The HOG Radio Show, Reality Radio 101, Biker Radio, Suzettee Speaks Silently, Northern Horizon Newspaper and our presenting sponsor, Community Futures of Alberta! About Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest: Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest was created by Renee ”Belt Drive Betty” Charbonneau, founder and CEO of Belt Drive Betty Media. Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest is a rural tourism marketing initiative whose goal is to create awareness of the wonderful businesses and communities that are there for riders to explore. Large cities are not as inviting for motorcyclists; with the advent of texting and driving along, the dangers of driving in traffic, road construction and other hazards along with motorcycle only noise bylaws, many riders prefer to get out on the open road and away from the majority of the dangers that cities present. Motorcyclists also face certain barriers when it comes to customer service in the travel and tourism industry. Belt Drive Betty Media is a diverse motorcycle media company founded in 2003. It offers the rider a vast array of ways to connect with the information on the motorcycle community they need. That diversity offers advertisers looking to connect with the Canadian riding community a large number of advertising vehicles to choose from. Belt Drive Betty Media offers TV, web, social media, app and email marketing opportunities.

New loan program for young ag entrepreneurs TRUDY KELLY FORSYTHE Evan Hegedys, 31, operates a cow-calf operation with his wife Tonay, 27, an hour north of Calgary, Alta. He will calve over 1,000 head this spring and breed 1,350 heifers this summer, so he is familiar with the expense of growing a farm business. “We have purchased and rented enough land to locally grow the feed for our herd, as well as some grain that we harvest, he says, adding that for the last couple years they have been custom feeding their calves. “Initially, we started custom haying to maximize our equipment, now we do hay/straw brokerage and deliveries as well. Hegedys is optimistic about the future of agriculture. “There’s a positive outlook, he says. “There is a lot of room to see land values increase and I see profitability in the next 10 years as long as interest does not go crazy. Loans help Chad DeBot, 34, operates DeBot & Sons Ltd., a third-generation cash crop, vegetable and seed corn farm in Wallaceburg, Ontario, with his father Dennis. He knows loans can help since one helped him purchase his first parcel of land in 2013. “We had previously rented this parcel and the owners at the time were aware of our good stewardship practise which made them more than happy and I was able to receive financial assistance from FCC, says De Bot. “I am grateful for the opportunity to grow my business through the Young Entrepreneur program and would definitely recommend this to young farmers. Young Entrepreneur Loan Recently young entrepreneurs in the agriculture retail, manufacturing and food processing sectors have had access to a new loan program. Farm Credit Canada announced the Young Entrepreneur Loan last month to provide financing up to $1 million per qualified applicant, under age 40. “It’s a positive program for sure, Hegedys says. “A lot of young farmers aren’t going to be new to the business. They likely grew up in it, but if not, this is going to be a valuable tool. FCC agrees access to capital allows businesses to take advantage of new opportunities and grow the economy. “By providing specialized loans for young farmers and entrepreneurs, we

Communication Day, July 11, Krista Scaldwell, vice president of Great West Life, will provide her keynote speech. Her Beyond the Seams and Seasoning will focus on the intrinsic value of 4-H. “While it was about sewing, cooking, etc., there were deeper skills developed,” she says. “4-H builds leaders beyond the community.” Scaldwell explains the valuable lessons 4-H provides, like how to run a meeting, working in teams, dealing with deadlines, presentations and the value of volunteers. She will also address how 4-H impacted her life. “When it came time to go to university, I was thrilled to get a Rotary Leadership Award, which I know was in part to getting my provincial honours in 4-H,” says Scaldwell. “I am forever grateful to the leaders and to the Women’s Institute who provided funding.” “Our keynote speakers represent the millions of global 4-H alumni impacting change every day, the same way 4-H members are making a difference in
their local communities,” says Shannon Benner, 4-H Canada CEO and chairwoman of the Global 4-H Network board of directors. Other keynote speakers include: Ann Makosinski, inventor and founder, Makotronic, Chris Koch, farmer, athlete, quadruple amputee, Krysta Harden, VP of public policy & chief sustainability officer, DuPont, Cristy Nurse, Olympic rower The Ottawa summit marks only the second time the network has met. The first took place in Korea in 2014. A Global 4-H Opportunities Expo will be held on the final two days, showcasing career, volunteering, education opportunities and resources for 4-H members and clubs. 4-H members and alumni wishing to volunteer can sign-up on the Global 4-H Network Summit Volunteer page . Follow the Summit on Twitter @ Global4HSummit, or get the latest updates on the Global 4H Network Summit website.
