Summer farm employment program
Your
Northern Horizon Team
f full-time farmers are thinking about hiring a student for summer employment, now is the time to apply. Once again, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) will be offering the Summer Farm Employment Program. This program gives Alberta’s youth the opportunity to gain farm work experience and provides wage support to farmers for the months of July and August. AF provides wage support to a maximum of $400 per month as well as worker’s compensation coverage and safety training information. “Employers must own or rent a farming operation in Alberta and work must be directly related to the farming operation,” says Mary Ann Nelson, coordinator for the Summer Farm Employment Program, AF, Stettler. “This doesn’t include domestic work or child care. Employers must recruit their own employee, provide daily supervision and ensure safe working conditions for their employee. Monthly records of time worked must be completed by the employer. Employees are paid by the farmer and by the government for each respective part of their salary, which must meet provincial minimum hourly rates.” Employees must be residents of Alberta, between 15 and 24 years of age and cannot be a direct
relative of the employer. ‘Direct relative’ includes child, step-child, foster child, brother, sister and son-or-daughter-in-law. Direct relative also includes a niece, nephew or grandchild permanently residing on the employer’s farm. Employees must not be working full time anywhere else or attending school while participating in the program. If they have been working full time prior to July 1 for the employer, they are not eligible for the program. Employees require a social insurance number in order to receive payment under this program. “Farm safety is an emphasis in this program and all summer farm employers and employees are required to review a safety DVD together,” says Nelson. “Employees must complete and pass a safety quiz based on the DVD information in order to be accepted into the program.” Applications are processed on a first-come, firstserve basis and will be accepted until all program funds are committed or May 31, 2017, whatever comes first. Applications received after May 31 will not be processed unless funding is available. Applications can be obtained from the AF’s website or by calling the Ag-Info Centre at 310-FARM (3276).

New board of directors provides oversight at AFSC The eight-member board was selected through an open recruitment process and includes individuals with a wealth of experience in agriculture, agribusiness, rural entrepreneurship and board governance. “AFSC is an important partner in supporting economic growth and job creation in the agriculture sector and in our rural communities. The new board will provide essential oversight to help ensure that AFSC’s programs and services are delivered effectively and continue to meet the needs of rural Alberta,” said Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. “For more than 75 years, AFSC has offered financial tools that help producers manage risks, like hail and drought, and has provided capital funding for entrepreneurs who want to start new ventures or expand their businesses. As a board, our priority is to make sure AFSC management continues to keep pace with the evolving needs of agribusiness and conducts its operations in a transparent and accountable manner that reflects the expectations of Albertans,” said Jennifer Wood, chair of AFSC

board of directors. As a provincial Crown corporation, AFSC provides loans, crop insurance and farm-income disaster assistance programs to farmers, agribusinesses and other small businesses. AFSC has provided more than $3 billion in loans to producers, businesses and other rural-based entrepreneurs over the last seven years. Demand for loans is approximately $500 million annually. In 2016, AFSC insured 78 per cent of total seeded annual acres (15 million acres), providing
$4.5 billion in coverage. AFSC’s previous board of directors was dismissed in June 2016 after an examination by Alberta’s Chief Internal Auditor raised concerns about oversight of senior executive expenses and procurement practices. For almost a year an interim board appointed by the Minister led the organization in providing important services to Albertans. The newly appointed board of directors assumes its responsibilities immediately.
Minister Oneil Carlier meets with incoming AFSC Board Chair Jennifer Wood.

AB stands with forestry Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Oneil Carlier issued the following statement in response to the latest development in the softwood lumber dispute with the United States: “We stand shoulder to shoulder with Alberta’s forest workers, their families and communities that rely on a strong forest industry. “Our government is working closely with the federal government and our forest industry to defend Alberta jobs and fair market access. “Together with affected provinces and Ottawa, we are developing plans to help support Albertans in addressing the possible impacts of a prolonged trade dispute. “This is the fifth time since 1982 that the U.S. has investigated alleged
Canadian lumber subsidies. In each case, international tribunals have ruled in Canada’s favour. We are confident we will prevail again. “We know that Alberta’s forest industry relies significantly on exports. That is why we are actively pursuing new markets outside the U.S. to ensure our products are sold around the world so we can continue diversifying our economy, creating jobs and making life better for Alberta’s forest communities. “We believe that a new and lasting deal is needed and we want to ensure that any deal supports our forest industry and the workers who support their families in this important industry.”

From birth, puppies are destined to become pack animals As the pup goes about his daily explorations the framework for his working career is being developed. The more he experiences, the more his confidence will grow. His natural curiosity will lead him to daily excursions and ventures expanding the pups ability to deal with new situations as they arise. It is up to the handler to provide guidance for the pup. This guidance gives the pup time to learn to develop trust in the handler’s decisions. Trust is built through respect and knowledge that the handler will provide strong and fair leadership. If anyone has suggestions for future articles, please let me know. Carol Nelson 250-772-5315

From birth a puppy is destined to be a pack animal. His mother and siblings are his first pack and where he learns to be a member. The mother is the leader and treats the pups well by nurturing and disciplining them. The mothers are usually very tolerant with the pups but there is also good discipline and so the pups learn their place in the pack. As time passes the individual pups will start to establish their hierarchy within the pack. When it is time to be seperated from the family pack and go to their new homes it is the owners responsibility to take over the leadership role. This should be kept consistent with how the mother started. Tolerant, and lenient, but firm with you as the leader. To be the leader boundaries need to be set and adhered to.

Research supports on-farm adoption of clean technologies
Farmers know the importance of keeping the land, water and air healthy to sustain their farms and livelihoods from one generation of farm family to the next. Sustainable farming practices will allow them to further grow their operations, while protecting the environment. Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay, alongside the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods, the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, Randy Boissonnault, today announced 20 new research projects across Canada that will help the farming sector become a world leader in the development and use of clean and sustainable agricultural technologies and practices. The new research projects are supported by the $27 million, five-year (2016-2021) Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program (AGGP) intended to help create technologies, practices and processes to help the agricultural sector adjust to climate change and improve soil and water conservation by developing new farming practices and methods. Minister MacAulay made the announcement on the eve of Earth day in Edmonton at the University of Alberta, which received an investment of $3.7 million for three projects that will explore the environmental footprint of different cereal crops, cattle grazing systems, and shelterbelts. “Canadian farmers are great stewards of the land and the environment. These new investments are part of the government’s commitment to address climate change and ensuring our farming sector are world leaders in the use and development of clean and sustainable technology and processes,” said Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay “Canada’s farmers are already harnessing innovation to reduce their environmental footprint. These new research projects will provide them with affordable and practical solutions to continue
feeding the world sustainably,” added Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna “Canada’s farmers are already harnessing innovation to reduce their environmental footprint. These new research projects will provide them with affordable and practical solutions to continue feeding the world sustainably.” Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi agreed, saying the Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program (AGGP) marks a significant investment in the government’s strategy against climate change. “This new investment with the University of Alberta will help provide Canadian farmers access to the latest technology and expertise to help reduce their carbon footprint,” said Sohi. “I’m proud to support this announcement of a new investment with the University of Alberta, as part of the government’s commitment to sustainable agriculture. The new research at the University of Alberta will help our farmers to continue to be strong stewards of our land, air and water resources,” said MP Randy Boissonnault (Edmonton Centre). “By investing in research focused on land, livestock, and crop management, AGGP will help ensure farmers have access to expertise and knowl-
edge that will improve efficiency. This funding will help Canada meet its GHG emissions targets, enhance Canada’s agricultural and agri-food sector productivity and support a key job-creating sector of Canada’s economy,” added Lorne Babiuk, Vicepresident (Research) University of Alberta The AGGP covers four priority areas of research: livestock systems, cropping systems, agricultural water use efficiency and agro-forestry. The AGGP investment will continue to support the work of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases, which brings together 47 countries to find ways to grow more food without growing greenhouse gas emissions.ew

Minister MacAulay welcomes Canadian Grain Commission proposal to reduce user fees Canada’s grain industry is known around the world for its quality, safety and consistency. In his address to members of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) at their Annual Convention on March 15, Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood, stated that lowering user fees was a priority and that the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) was consulting with industry to find ways to save money for growers. Today, the Minister welcomed the CGC’s proposal to reduce fees for official grain inspection and official grain weighing services effective August 1, 2017. Supplementary fees for overtime related to official grain inspection services would also be eliminated. The reduced fees would result in a 24% decrease in fees, or estimated savings of approximately $10 million, for the 2017 to 2018 fiscal year. “One of the results of the tremendous production we’ve seen in Western Canada over the past few years has been higher revenues at the Canadian Grain Commission. As a result, I committed to our stakeholders to look at ways to lower its user fees.
Today’s announcement is an important step to putting more money in the pockets of our farmers, helping to grow the economy and strengthen the middle class,” said Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. On March 1, 2017, the Canadian Grain Commission launched consultations on proposed changes to its user fees and began a discussion about potential uses of surplus funds. The proposed changes would limit further accumulation of surplus revenue in the Canadian Grain Commission revolving fund. The proposed changes were published in the Canada Gazette, Part I on April 22, 2017. Stakeholders have until May 22, 2017 to comment on the proposed changes. The Canadian Grain Commission is the federal agency responsible for establishing and maintaining Canada’s grain quality standards. Its programs result in shipments of grain that consistently meet contract specifications for quality, safety and quantity. It regulates the grain industry to protect producers’ rights and ensure the integrity of grain transactions in Canada.

Should I feed my horse garlic to repel insects? Q. I am always looking for natural ways to repel flies in my barn and I have heard that feeding garlic can stop flies from bothering horses. Does this work and is it safe to feed garlic to horses? A. Garlic is touted for several beneficial functions, including respiratory health (it is supposed to alter mucus’ physical properties), antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties, and its supposed ability to repel insects. The thinking is that feeding garlic creates an odor in sweat that helps repel flies. Garlic and other members of the onion family are rich sources of organic sulfur compounds (in organic chemistry, “organic” means a compound contains a significant amount of carbon). One of the many sulfur compounds present in garlic is a thiosulfate, which has been associated with antibacterial and antiparasitic properties found in allicin (a pungent, oily liquid in garlic).
However, in a second study researchers showed a tendency for decreased hemoglobin and red blood cell count when feeding 32 milligrams (mg) of garlic per kilogram of body weight over an 83day period. This suggests that in the same 500-kilogram horse feeding as little as 16 grams (about half an ounce) could cause alterations in blood chemistry. While many people feed garlic and report no ill effects, the clinical signs might not be obvious and depending on the dose, frequency, and duration of the dose given there could be low-grade deleterious effects. The National Research Council states that more data is need to fully assess the potential risks and benefits of feeding garlic but that feeding 15 mg per kilogram of body weight per day (or 7.5 grams) of dried garlic powder on a long-term basis should
not lead to any adverse event in horses under normal circumstances. Take-Home Message While feeding 7.5 grams of garlic per day might not lead to side effects, one does have to wonder whether that amount would confer any benefit as an insect repellant. Applying dilute garlic oil topically might be far more effective. Clair Thunes, PhD Clair Thunes, PhD, is an independent equine nutrition consultant who owns Summit Equine Nutrition, based in Sacramento, California. She works with owners/trainers and veterinarians across the United States and globally to take the guesswork out of feeding horses.
Despite work showing the antibacterial and antiparasitic properties of allicin, there is limited data on the efficacy of garlic as a fly repellant either when applied topically or given orally, and none I’m aware of in horses. A study in people looking at garlic oil when applied topically at a 1% dilution did show a 97% repellant effectiveness. Potential Dangers of Feeding Garlic A handful of studies have looked at the potential side effects of feeding horses garlic. Garlic and other alliums (plants in the onion family) contain several potential toxins, the principal one being N-propyl disulfide. This compound alters the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in red blood cells, which interferes with the cell’s ability to prevent oxidative damage to hemoglobin (a protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood). The damaged hemoglobin precipitates on the surface of red blood cells resulting in what is known as Heinz bodies. The liver and spleen both act to remove damaged red blood cells from circulation, leading to anemia due to reduced numbers of circulating red blood cells. This form of anemia is known specifically as Heinz body anemia. Feeding more than 0.4 grams per kilogram body weight of freeze dried garlic has led to Heinz body anemia in horses. This is the equivalent to feeding a 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) horse 200 or more grams per day, which is just under half a pound. While this amount could easily be consumed by horses eating wild garlic growing in pastures it is unlikely that this amount would be given on purpose.

On the topic of raising an orphaned foal by Dr. Christa Harder No one wants to raise an orphan foal but occasionally unfortunate complications arise when a mare is giving birth and one is left with an orphan to raise. This typically occurs without warning therefore it helps to know a bit about raising an orphan before you are thrown into this position. A lot of people are very knowledgeable about raising orphan calves however raising a foal is quite a bit different and more labor intensive. The first thing an orphan foal needs is colostrum immediately after birth. Colostrum is the first milk that is very rich in proteins providing immunity for the new foal. A general rule is 1 - 2 L good quality colostrum within the first 4 hours of life. If possible get as much colostrum milked out of the mare as one can
before she passes away. If no colostrum is available contact us at the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic since we try to keep some on hand for emergency situations from donations. If you have a mare that loses a foal please still milk out her colostrum and freeze it. If you are expecting more foals this can be a life line for your next foaling emergency otherwise please donate it to the clinic colostrum bank. If no colostrum sources are available, I have used commercial freeze dried calf colostrum as a substitute. If the foal will not nurse from a bottle you may need to get a veterinarian out to stomach tube the foal. If you are unsure whether the foal has received enough colostrum we can do a test after 10 hours of life to check if there are adequate protein levels in the blood. We will consider blood or plasma transfusions
in foals that have not received adequate levels of colostrum. A mare’s udder is designed to produce smaller amounts of milk frequently. In the first 1-2 days of life the foal should be fed every 1-2 hours. From day 2-12 the foal should be fed every 2 hours and after this point feedings still need to be frequent but the duration between feedings can increase. Energy requirements for the foal are about 10% of its body weight in the first few days but then quickly increase to 25 % body weight. An average sized foal can typically handle 2 cups per feeding to start and then amounts increase rapidly with time. Type of milk to feed is always an important consideration. Mare’s milk is always the best for a foal. A nurse mare that has lost a foal is most ideal. Social media has become a great tool to connect orphaned
foal owners with owners of nurse mares therefore I encourage everyone to post online if they are in this situation. Fostering can be labor intensive at first and if possible the mare has good temperament and has raised foals before, ideally the mare has foaled close to the time when your foal was born. There are several techniques to bring a mare into lactation with drugs but it usually takes at least 7-10 days to bring them into milk. There will be a window where the foal needs to be supplemented. Commercial mare replacer is the next best choice but can be cost prohibitive. Mare’s milk is lower in fat and higher in sugar than cow or goat milk. 2% cow milk with the addition of 20 grams dextrose per litre can be used. Goat’s milk is very palatable for a foal but benefits from the addition of dextrose as well. Foals can be trained to bucket feed and is less labor intensive than bottle feeding. Training to bucket feed takes patience though most foals figure it out fairly quickly. Start by wetting your finger with milk and putting it in its mouth and eventually just getting them to put their nose in the bucket. The milk needs to be fresh and replaced at least every 12 hours in a clean bucket. Milk can be left in an accessible location for the foal to accesses when it is hungry. This is also a more natural way of feeding since the foal
Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic
can “graze” on milk as it desires. Socially, bucket feeding is also better for the foal than bottle feeding since these foals can very quickly develop disrespect for a human and become food aggressive towards people which can be dangerous. Since horses are very social animals it is important to raise foals with other horses so they develop normal social skills. Providing the foal with a companion such as an older docile horse will help. Exercise is also very important for growth and development therefore provide the foal with space to run around. Foals can typically be weaned from 4-6 months of age. When raising the orphan plan to supplement till about 4 months of age. Even though a foal will nib-
ble, its digestive tract will not be capable of utilizing nutrients completely from forages until this point. As soon as possible start offering some creep feed or milk replacer pellets. As they eat more of this, it can drastically decrease the amount of milk required. Also offer high quality leafy hay or grass for the foal to start nibbling on to develop its digestive tract. Clean fresh water should be accessible to the foal at all times. As I mentioned earlier a nurse mare is always your best choice for an orphan foal. However with diligent attention at the start of their life, many foals have gone on to become normal, healthy horses when raised by humans.

This mustard sauce is meant to have some zing, but if you want less heat, swap smoked paprika for the cayenne.
Season steak all over with salt and pepper. Whisk grated garlic, mustard, vinegar, honey, cayenne, ⅓ cup oil, and 1 Tbsp. water in a medium bowl to combine; season spicy mustard with salt and pepper. Heat a dry medium skillet, preferably cast iron, over medium-high. Rub steak all over with 1 Tbsp. oil and cook, turning every 2 minutes or so and making sure to get color on the fat cap, until medium-rare (an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center will register 120°), about 10 minutes. Transfer steak to a plate to rest. Pour off oil from skillet, leaving crispy bits behind. Heat remaining 2 Tbsp. oil in same skillet over low. Add sliced garlic and all but about 2 Tbsp. scallions (save those for serving) and cook, stirring often, until translucent and softened, about 3 minutes. Add peas and a splash of water and cook, stirring and mashing to break up slightly, until peas are tender, about 5 minutes. Add asparagus; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring often, until asparagus is just tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Slice steak and shingle over vegetables in skillet. Drizzle some mustard sauce over steak and top with reserved scallions. Serve with remaining mustard sauce alongside.

Cover with a tight-fitting lid, or with foil and place in the oven to braise for at least two hours. The ribs are done when they are fork tender and nearly falling off the bone.
1 Tbsp dried rosemary or 1 bunch fresh 4 bay leaves Sprinkled sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat your oven to 325°. 2. Heat a large heavy skillet over medium high heat, then add enough oil to cover the bottom with a light film. Add the ribs and patiently brown them well on all sides. CFTA opens doors for ag Richard Kamchen
The Northern Horizon, May 12, 2017
Meat
The new Canadian Free Trade Agreement promises to open interprovincial trade to agriculture. Provincial governments agreed to establish a regulatory reconciliation process to address regulatory differences across jurisdictions, it states in a federal government background document. Trucking transportation regulations and differing requirements between federally- and provinciallyregulated meat processing plants are two areas agriculture expects to see changes. Trucking The Manitoba government says the regulatory reconciliation process to reduce duplicate, overlapping or inconsistent regulations could provide opportunities for further harmonization of trucking industry regulatory requirements. Manitoba Trucking Association welcomed the chance to mitigate trucking regulatory barriers. “While we have seen progress in Western Canada under the New West Partnership Trade Agreement, progress on a national level has been sporadic, and we look forward to continued work to reduce red tape for inter-jurisdictional carriers,” says its executive director, Terry Shaw.
The Canadian Federation of Agriculture had encouraged harmonizing inspection standards between provincial and federally regulated meat inspection facilities so that meat processed in either type of facility could travel and be sold at outlets across Canada. Keystone Agricultural Producers president Dan Mazier says CFTA provides the chance of reducing internal barriers and red tape, thus allowing consumers more chances to choose Canadian products. CFA president Ron Bonnett says the deal demonstrates commitment to harmonize regulations and standards, and take a transparent approach in implementing changes. “CFA is pleased that the agreement is structured to facilitate the flow of goods using an over-arching non-discrimination principle,” he says. “This will ensure that technical aspects don’t create unnecessary barriers to trade within our own borders.” Alcohol Also included in the deal is a commitment to further negotiate enhanced trade in alcoholic beverages. Within a year of CFTA taking effect, a working group will report back to internal trade ministers with recommendations to increase interprovincial trade in wine, beer and spirits.
The Grande Prairie antique show brought out the fans of old, young and old alike. CARTIER Removing interprovincial barriers will “help the Canadian wine sector adjust, take advantage of, and prepare for a new state of global trade,” says the Canadian Vintners Associa-
tion. The CFTA replaces the existing 1995 Agreement on Internal Trade and takes effect July 1, Canada’s 150th birthday.

Producers urged to do homework before using onepass planting application CRAIG LESTER There’s a lot of work to be done during this year’s planting season as millions of acres of unharvested crops from last year in the west have to come off before planting can begin. One pass application Once the crop is cleared, many may consider using a one=pass application of fertilizer and seed to help speed up the process, reduce cost and soil compaction. However, a senior agronomist with Agrium urges producers to do their homework first. Ray Dowbenko says in an ideal situation, producers should put fertilizer down in the fall, which in a lot of cases wasn’t an option this time around with the late harvest. During one-pass application, if it isn’t done right, there’s a risk of seed injury when nitrogen is in close proximity to the seed, either through a salteffect or a free ammonia effect. “A salt-effect is a competition for moisture between the fertilizer needing moisture to dissolve and the seed itself needing moisture to germinate,” Dowbenko says. He says a free-ammonia effect can also happen when the urea fertilizer granule converts into ammonium and eventually nitrate. “There’s a brief period where free ammonia is given off and that can be damaging in terms of burning the seed,” he says. Soil moisture Dowbenko says producers need to be cognizant of soil moisture and texture, as well as equipment in terms of row space and type of opener. “There are safe rate guidelines in the Prairie provinces for how much fertilizer-nitrogen can be applied with various crops based on the soil types, texture, organic matter, soil pH levels, moisture and certainly the equipment,” Dowbenko says. He says moisture can also hurt the fertilizer effectiveness, which is why it’s important to know the product being applied.

THE BIG BEND Hedwig and John Wold by Hedwig Wold In 1927 at the age of 10, my sister and I came with parents from Switzerland to Brooks, Alberta. My parents bought land south of Burdett and we lived there for almost three years. We heard of land opening up for homesteading in the Peace Region country, so we headed north by train, landing in Spirit River. My parents homestead in what is now Westmark. When hauling feed from La Glace, I met my husband to be, John Wold. John had come from Newway in 1907 with his parents and brothers, working on farms, coal minds and sawmills during earlier years. We were married in 1935 and lived in Buffalo Lake until 1955 where all our children were born. We wanted more land that was clean, so in 1955 we moved to Blueberry Mountain, homesteading there on S 1/2 2 -828. There were no roads, many sloughs and lots of mosquitoes. Clockwise from top left; John Wold in 1957, ďŹ rst oil rig in the northeast, a water supply dugout and left, cutting the bruish.

2017 Canadian crop acreage prospects Statistics Canada issued its first estimates of 2017 Canadian crop acreage of the season on April 21. The numbers suggest Canadian farmers expect to plant record acres of canola and soybeans, as well as more spring wheat and oats in 2017, but fewer acres of durum wheat and lentils, crops that were both at high levels in 2016. The survey of seeding intentions was taken from 11,600 Canadian farmers conducted from March 16 to March 31. Canola Canadian farmers are expecting to seed monster acres to canola in 2017, up to a potential record-high 22.4 million acres. That’s up over 9.9 per cent from last year. It’s no surprise that we see higher canola acres, but this number did come in at the high end of trade expectations. It’s notable that the acreage gains are heavily biased to Saskatchewan and Alberta, while Manitoba farmers are forgoing canola in order to planting more soybeans. The current market is still coming to terms with a tightening old crop supply situation which continues to support prices. Soybeans Nationally, farmers intend to seed a record seven million acres of soybeans, up 27.2 per cent from 2016. Manitoba shows the largest expected increase in area, up 34.6 per cent to 2.2 million acres. That’s another potential record high for this province. Ontario farmers anticipate seeding three million acres, a rise of 11.4 per cent over 2016, while Quebec’s acreage is expected to grow to a possible record high of 926,600 acres, up 15.4 per cent over 2016.
Wheat Canadian farmers intend to seed 23.2 million acres of all varieties of wheat in 2017, relatively unchanged from the area seeded in 2016. There was a sense in pre-report estimates that Canadian wheat acres would follow with the trend to lower acreage seen in the United States, but that is not the case. Our view is that Canadian spring wheat acreage can rise, not because it’s a profit leader, but rather spring wheat is a default cropping option because acreage of others like barley, lentils and durum are lower. Pulses A record 5.9 million acres of lentils were seeded in 2016, that will be trimmed by 25 per cent to 4.4 million in 2017. There is some uncertainty in the pulse trade given stressed trade relations with India. However, farmers are still satisfied enough return per acre potential, low inputs and rotational benefits of incorporating pulses in their rotations. PFCanada believes that field pea area is likely to rise. Barley and oats Canadian farmers across almost all provinces report that they intend to seed less barley in 2017, down eight per cent to 5.9 million acres. Areas seeded to oats are expected to rise 20.6 per cent over 2016 to 3.4 million acres. The only exception is Alberta, where farmers plan to seed 690,000 acres, a 4.2 per cent decrease from 2016. Mike Jubinville of Pro Farmer Canada offers information on commodity markets and marketing strategies.
First 2017 estimates are in.

Spring cattle prices set table for stronger industry
CRAIG LESTER
Friendly feed costs
A spring cattle price rally has turned prices around on the market, setting up for a good summer and fall for producers. Since the lows of last fall, the industry has seen prices jump as much as 35 per cent in some animal categories, creating some of the best margins in years, according to Brian Perillat, CanFax manager and senior analyst. “We do have more cattle numbers coming forward, but the supply has been priced in and the demand domestically and internationally has been strong in supporting this market,” Perillat says.
0
He says the Canadian dollar and feed costs have also been friendly, adding the market is now well supported and demand is strong, which is good news for producers. He says a strong spring, means ranchers can now insure a 600-pound steer for about $2 a pound with the Western Canadian Livestock Insurance Price Program. Camrose, Alta. area rancher Dave Solverson is eyeing the insurance program more than he was a few months ago. “We can insure for a lot better price than we could just a couple of months ago,” Solverson says.

The past president of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association says the strong rally gives producers, who may be kicking themselves for not selling more of their breeding stock in 2014 when prices were strong, justification for keeping them around. Strong fall feeder market South Slope Feeders co-owner George Graham says so far this year, market prices point to a strong feeder market for the fall. “That’s pretty encouraging for sellers of feeder cattle and cow-calf for the fall,” Graham says. “It looks like the profitability in the feeding sector will probably get transferred back to relevant higher costing feeder cattle come fall time.” The Ranier, Alberta-based feeder says while he is optimistic about what is to come this fall, he will be watching the dollar and factoring that into his pricing strategy.

Good times for bison producers NEIL BILLINGER The bison sector is thriving in Western Canada, buoyed by strong prices and growing markets. Health conscious consumers, particularly in the United States, like the low fat meat that is high in vitamins and iron. Bison meat is popular with runners, mountain bikers, fitness enthusiasts and high end diners. Prices increase Canadian bison producers are receiving $6.50 a pound hot, hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls, an increase of about 50 cents over the past year. Prices are also impacted by U.S. buyers - and their strong currency - coming to Canada for bison calves to raise south of the border. “Every time I think we have hit our limit, then prices go up another 10 cents,” says Gilbert Provencher, a bison producer from Shellbrook, Sask. Provencher is a member of Canadian Prairie Bison, a co-operative with approximately 150 members in the four western provinces. It was established in 2001 to improve the producer price for bison. At the beginning of the year, each operator commits the number of bison to be sold and the co-op arranges the sales.
cousin. “In the last three years, we’ve had anywhere from 15 cents up to 22 cents a pound.” Only 10 per cent of the bison meat is sold domestically. The vast majority goes to the United States with a small amount of prime cuts sold to European buyers. Value-added markets
Price strength “At the end of the year, if there is any money left over, it goes back to producers,” says marketing manager Roger Provencher, who is also Gilbert’s

The bison pemmican is more expensive than beef jerky, but distributor Steve Schultz with P.A. Fine Foods says most people buy smaller amounts as a snack for the road. “I think the product is fantastic,” Schultz says. “If (consumers) try it and see how good it is, the price won’t be a big deal. Time out for Mom’s program Sandra Lario In 1983 the Savanna Community Library board initiated the Time Out for Mom’s program with a Mission Statement - to provide a place and opportunity for young children to develop social skills with peers - and to provide a place for anyone wishing to have a “Time Out” from the day to day activities. The program was designed for kids aged to two to five and a half years old, operating from the first Thursday in October to the last Thursday in April. The program enlisted the help of two students from Savanna School who earn credits towards their diploma. Parents were the key to the suc-
cess of this program - volunteering as assistants, as well as donating time to the annual bake sale table and bingo.

Fruit Outlook 2017: Strong demand… stronger production quality and the end use. Canadian grape prices increased nearly 3% (average of B.C. and Ontario) in 2015 as strong prices for wine grapes were offset by lower prices for fresh grapes. Prices currently remain strong as demand for wine grapes is expected to continue growing in 2017.
Canada’s apple, grape and cranberry markets. Leigh Anderson Senior Agricultural Economist Apples – large 2016 harvest pushes prices lower
A market outlook is always about demand and supply. The 2017 fruit outlook is defined by a large available supply, with growing demand.
Canadian apple production was up 14% while U.S. apple production was up 4% from 2015. A large supply of apples still remains in storage as a result: AAFC’s monthly apple storage report indicates apple supplies are 49% higher than last year’s level.
SPRING SAVINGS
Currently, US fresh apple market prices are down 12% in 2017 and remain near the previous 5-year average. The same trend has impacted the Canadian market where retail apple prices are down 13% in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016 and remaining above the previous 5-year average.
The cranberry industry has had several years of low prices due to growing North American supplies of cranberries. Increased cranberry production in Canada was mainly the result of strong yield gains. While prices remain low, rising production has compensated for low prices, boosting farm cash receipts. Final 2016 data is unavailable,
While there are multiple demand segments that are growing in the cranberry sector (for example organic or China), prices remain soft as evidenced by the most recent OceanSpray auction. Profitability critically depends on the ability of producers to continue growing productivity. Grapes – wine grape prices outstrip softer fresh prices Overall, the Canadian grape industry had a good year in 2016, production was up 22% over 2015, led by continued growth in grapes for wine production. Market prices are mixed based on the variety,

Agrium narrowly misses expectations, swings to quarterly loss Higher energy costs and lower phosphate prices helped swing fertilizer giant Agrium Inc. (TSX:AGU) to a worse than expected net loss for the first quarter. The results, reported Monday in U.S. dollars, showed an $11-million net loss or $0.08 per share, compared with net earnings of $2-million or $0.02 per share for the same quarter last year. Analysts had expected a slightly better quarter, with a consensus complied by Thomson Reuters looking for a $7.7-million loss and $0.07 cents per share.
MAY

The company said earnings were hit in part by phosphate prices, which dropped to US$466 per tonne in the quarter, compared with US$589 per tonne for the same quarter last year. The first quarter is generally slower for the fertilizer industry, with analysts expecting full year earnings of $744 million or $5.35 per share for Agrium. The Calgary-based company continues to work towards its merger with Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (TSX:POT), with an expected mid-year close.

How the Fort Mac fire attack changed my life
Today marks one year ago that I along with two other ladies, drove up to the City of Fort McMurray which had been evacuated. 88,000 people fled their homes. This was a ghost town save for the Firefighters and other first responders. During that evacuation Deputy Fire Chief Cranley Ryan’s daughter and her friend were killed in a horrific vehicle crash. Mercifully, for a city about to loose so much, these two young and promising lives were the only lives lost. However, every life touched by the Beast, would remain forever changed. There are numerous documentaries, numerous stories being told. Mine is just one of many. Like millions of horrified Canadians, I watched the Beast threaten Fort Mac and force an evacuation of epic proportion on May 3rd, 2016.
On May 4th I heard Fire Chief Darby Allen say his men and women were exhausted and hungry and my heart was called to go feed people. Lynda Klouth and Jessica Kappel journeyed with me up there, Jessie to stay and fight fires, Lynda left to go and get more supplies and I stayed to feed people. I am grateful for the journey that took me to Fort McMurray. It taught me so much about myself and others. In most cases my faith in human nature was restored. Some of the memories from Fort Mac are painful, like watching a fire fighter trying to look after his swollen and blistered feet, blisters on the soles over an inch think and yet, when his captain called, he jammed his feet back in his boot and off he went...watching men and women who were so exhausted they were trembling, sleeping on the hard ground, the floor - literally dropping out of sheer exhaustion. Being interrogated by the police three times and on Mother’s Day of all days...
Some of the memories are sweet, tender and heartwarming like the little girl who recognized fire fighter Jessica Kappel and ran up to her to thank her. Or the Edmonton Fire Department taking over the cooking of Breakfast on Mother’s Day along with Jeremy Hall, making sure all moms and ladies got a special breakfast thanks to the Pine Haven Hutterite Colony and their farm fresh eggs and homemade sausage. Another sweet moment is when Keltie May Nicole replaced my stolen “Sparky” dog with one out of her team’s Fire rig. Yes the Beast stole a lot in those days, but actually, I think in someways it gave back far more.... It gave me back faith in humanity, in myself and it has changed how I view tragedy. Until next time, I am Belt Drive Betty, Editor & Rider and one GRATEFUL human being! Ride Safe....

Pickseed to buy forage seed firm Moore Seeds
Pickseed plans in the Peace.
16th Annual Spring Sale
The Canadian arm of one of the world’s top forage seed players plans to expand its space in the Peace region with a deal for forage and turfgrass seed dealer Moore Seeds. DLF Pickseed Canada announced April 21 it has a letter of intent in place to buy Moore — based at Debolt, Alta., about 50 km east of Grande Prairie — for an undisclosed sum. Moore has “significant” market presence in the Peace region’s turfgrass and forage crop seed production area, buying, processing and retailing. Moore sells domestically and exports into the U.S. and Europe, Pickseed said in a release. Moore “represents a significant addition and a highly complementary fit for DLF Pickseed Canada,” DLF Pickseed CEO Rob Clark said in the same
release. The deal is expected to close in July, after which Moore would “continue as a separate entity operating as DLF Moore Seeds,” he said. “I feel that DLF Pickseed Canada will provide strong management succession for Moore Seeds when I retire in a few years,” Moore Seeds president Raymond Walker said in the same release. In the meantime, he said, Moore expects to seek “synergies through (Pickseed’s) global leadership in market share and research and development.” DLF Pickseed Canada is the Canadian arm of Danish seed grower co-operative DLF, which has owned Pickseed since 2013. — AGCanada. com Network

Wheat and the year that will be 2017
It has been an interesting start to May. Lowly wheat has grabbed the market headlines and run higher, led by Kansas City hard red winter wheat futures, with Chicago SRW soft red winter and Minneapolis spring wheat markets also along for the ride. Traders pushed winter wheat futures sharply higher Monday in response to last weekend’s winter storm across the American central and southern plains. Heavy snow, high winds and cold temperatures damaged the HRW wheat crop that is more advanced than usual for this time of year. U.S. crop damage Up to a foot of snow fell in western Kansas and western Oklahoma and was combined with strong winds. That led to some lodging of the United States winter wheat crop. Cold temperatures, particularly in Kansas, also caused damage to about a third of the crop, especially in areas where snow cover was minimal, with about 10 per cent of the crop potentially facing irreversible damage. Adequately assessing damage for the U.S. HRW crop will take time, and I suspect the extreme nature of last weekend’s weather event will compromise the credibility of 2017 U.S. Quality Council’s winter wheat tour happening this week. Still, the tour comments and results will be closely scrutinized. Additional buying
From the market perspective, U.S. wheat futures have pushed upward though their respective 50, 100 and 200-day moving averages on the price charts. This triggered additional buying from the managed money crowd (speculative funds) who were collectively short a record amount of ag commodities as of the end of April. Whether the unfavourable finish to April U.S. weather will be enough to scare speculative funds out of their enormous short futures positions remains to be seen, though that process was at least initiated to start the week. I suspect that seasoned traders will wait to sell again at the first sign of any rally stalling out. Spring wheat At the time of writing on May 2, Minneapolis July spring wheat futures leapt up to its mid-February high of $5.70 to $5.75 per bushel before easing back to just below that level. Field work and seeding prospects on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border is slowed due to uncooperative weather which has slowed spring. Areas of U.S. winter wheat production were also hammered by poor weather last weekend. Both commercial and speculative fund traders supported HRS wheat futures, which could lead to a further test of that key resistance zone of $5.70 to $5.75 per bushel. Futures spreads are strengthening, a sign of supportive commercial activity.
In Canada On this side of the border, Canadian spring wheat cash bids also benefited from a weakening loonie, dipping below the 73 US cent level, a 14-month low. Western Canada cash bids for No. 1 CWRS 13.5 per cent protein are now seen spot $6.92 to $7.13 per bushel in Alberta, $6.75 to $7 a bushel in Manitoba, and $6.50 to $6.75 in Saskatchewan. Expect another six to 10 cent premium for July delivery. Conventional thinking is that exhaustion of the current rally will be followed by a period of consolidation as the market assesses the crop damage to hard red wheat and spring red wheat in the United States during the first half May. North American seeding and emergence issues and the degree to which the managed funds lighten short positions will also play a role. Remember though, the latest International Grains Council’s estimates still suggest 2017-2018 could be a carbon copy of the current crop year on world wheat supply. It forecasts only a one million tonne reduction in global wheat ending stocks over the upcoming year, with ending stocks/use expected to improve only slightly to a bearish 32.4 per cent. Mike Jubinville of Pro Farmer Canada offers information on commodity markets and marketing strategies.
